3 John — kashmiri

TRI knowledge bundle for 3 John (kashmiri).

Executive Summary

Executive Summary: 3 John Kashmiri Translation Requirements

Why it matters

3 John is a 14-verse personal letter, but it is not a low-stakes one. Its dense, repeated vocabulary of truth, testimony, and love intersects two live, distinct religious systems in Kashmir — mainstream Sunni Islamic theology and the Rishi Sufi devotional tradition on one side, Kashmir Shaivism (Trika) on the other — in ways at least as concentrated, verse-for-verse, as anything in the Romans baseline. A single mistranslated word (شہادت for “testify,” حق for “truth,” عشق for “love”) can quietly convert John’s commendation letter into something that reads as an Islamic creedal statement or a Sufi/Trika mystical text, without any single sentence being individually “wrong” in isolation. This curriculum extends the Romans Language Package without contradiction, reusing 10 baseline terms exactly and adding 34 new term entries, all risk-tiered and grounded.

Key findings

  • 10 Critical/High-risk terms require absolute glossary enforcement: truth (Critical), true (Critical), testimony (Critical), elder (High), love (High), the Name (High), loves-to-be-first (High), malicious slander (High), cast out (High), good/doing good (High).
  • 6 doctrines (2 Critical, 4 High) require mandatory human theologian review: Truth and Christian Fellowship, Commendation of Faithful Witness, Hospitality to Traveling Ministers, Ministry for the Name of Christ, Imitating Good rather than Evil, Church Leadership and Pride.
  • 5 additional Medium-risk doctrines require native speaker review; 0 doctrines are automated-only — every doctrine in this short book carries at least native-speaker-level translation risk.
  • The letter’s two New Testament hapax legomena (φιλοπρωτεύω, “loves to be first”; φλυαρέω, “malicious slander”) have no crystallized Kashmiri Christian-vocabulary equivalent and require descriptive compounds, not single words.
  • Two genuinely positive cultural bridges exist — Kashmiri/Islamicate hospitality tradition (mehmān-nawāzī) and shared regional value on humility — both usable pedagogically if fenced carefully so they do not flatten the letter’s Christ-specific motivations into generic cultural custom.

Risks

  • Testimony/شہادت collision (Critical): μαρτυρέω/μαρτυρία must never use شہادت (the Islamic Five-Pillars creedal confession) or شہید (martyrdom) — این would either overclaim creedal weight or dilute a term Muslim-background readers hold as sacred. گواہی is the required, zero-exception rendering across vv.3, 6, 12.
  • Truth/حق collision (Critical): ἀλήθεια/ἀληθής must never default to حق (Al-Haqq, a Divine Name and, in Sufi/Trika metaphysics, a name for Ultimate Reality itself) as the primary term. This risk is unusually concentrated because 3 John uses “truth” more densely (six occurrences in 14 verses) than almost any comparably short NT text.
  • Good/نیک عمل collision (High): v.11’s “whoever does good is of God” is the single verse in the letter most exposed to an Islamic deeds-weighing misreading, because its own grammar (an if/then moral test) superficially resembles that framework more than most NT ethical exhortations.
  • Elder/بزرگ and Imitate/پیروی collisions (High/Medium): both terms are live, actively practiced Rishi Sufi vocabulary (venerated master; murid-pir discipleship submission), not dead metaphors, requiring explicit fencing rather than assumed neutrality.
  • Diotrephes’s expulsion (ἐκβάλλω, High): risks being normalized through familiar mosque-congregation or Sufi-order communal expulsion patterns if not explicitly taught as condemned sin rather than legitimate discipline.

Opportunities

  • Kashmiri’s strong, positively-resonant hospitality tradition (mehmān-nawāzī) offers a genuine on-ramp for teaching Gaius’s and the traveling ministers’ conduct — provided the curriculum explicitly anchors it to “the Name” (Christ) and “the truth,” not left as generic cultural virtue.
  • The letter’s short length and self-contained, single-chapter structure make it an efficient pilot text for stress-testing this Language Package’s dual-audience (Islamic/Trika) methodology before larger books are processed.
  • Ten baseline Romans terms (god, jesus, messiah, lord, church, peace, gentiles, faith, grace, salvation) transfer cleanly with zero new reasoning required, demonstrating the baseline’s reusability across curricula as designed.
  1. Lock assets/translation_memory.json (3 John version, 34 new terms + 10 inherited) as the enforced glossary before any Phase 2 segment translation begins.
  2. Route all 6 Critical/High doctrines to human theologian review before publication; route the 5 Medium doctrines to native speaker review.
  3. Apply the updated 12_ai_translation_requirements.md (v2.23) system prompt, which layers 3 John-specific forbidden substitutions (شہادت, حق, عشق, unqualified بزرگ/پیروی/نیک عمل, ولی) on top of the unchanged Romans baseline list.
  4. Confirm all provisional Kashmiri renderings (especially the two hapax-legomenon descriptive compounds) against a current published Kashmiri New Testament and a native-speaking theologian before wide deployment, per the baseline’s standing caveat.
  5. In Phase 2 lesson-writing, explicitly pair every hospitality-doctrine passage with “for the sake of the Name” framing, and every “good/evil” passage in v.11 with the baseline’s grace-vs-merit teaching note, so neither doctrine is left to default into an Islamic deeds-weighing or generic-custom reading.
