Translation Landscape

Existing Kashmiri Bible translations

Bible societies have published Kashmiri Scripture portions and a New Testament in Perso-Arabic script, giving this Language Package an existing foundation for core proper nouns and narrative vocabulary. This Language Package follows established regional convention for high-frequency terms (خُدا, یِسوع, خُداوند, مسیح) rather than introducing new renderings, while noting that Kashmiri’s extended vowel inventory requires diacritics this document has not attempted to fully reproduce.

Where existing translations fall short for this curriculum

  • Doctrinal-study vocabulary gap: existing Kashmiri Scripture translation is optimized for narrative and devotional reading, not doctrinal instruction. Compound theological terms needed for a study curriculum — justification, imputed righteousness, obedience of faith — do not have settled renderings the way core narrative vocabulary does.
  • No documented dual-audience framework: existing materials do not systematically distinguish the Islamic-theology risk axis from the Kashmir Shaivism risk axis; most treatment of Kashmiri Christian translation risk (where it exists at all) is written with only a Muslim-majority audience in mind. This Language Package’s registry addresses both explicitly for the first time in a documented, reusable way.
  • Shared-vocabulary ambiguity is under-addressed: terms like Injil, Masih, and especially Ruh al-Qudus carry pre-existing, well-defined meanings in Islamic theology that differ from their biblical sense; existing materials do not always flag this distinction as explicitly as a study curriculum requires.

Readiness assessment

Kashmiri sits in a similar position to Dogri: real existing Bible translation work exists to anchor core proper nouns, but doctrinal-study vocabulary is considerably less settled than Hindi’s, and the specific challenge of shared Islamic vocabulary carrying a different established meaning is more acute here than in most other languages in this pipeline. Several terms in translation_memory.json are flagged as provisional pending confirmation by a Kashmiri-speaking theologian familiar with both the Islamic and Kashmir Shaivite religious landscape.
