Core Glossary

Core Glossary: 1 Kings (Spanish)

This glossary extends the baseline Romans translation_memory.json for the 1 Kings curriculum. Terms marked “Reused (baseline)” must use the exact Spanish rendering already recorded in the baseline; do not re-derive or alter them. Terms marked “New (1 Kings)” are proposed additions that must be added to translation_memory.json (with version increment) before Phase 2 translation begins, per the Language Package’s term-discovery protocol.

Governing Convention

#TermOriginal (Hebrew, translit.)Spanish RenderingRiskDoctrineStatusNotes / Rejected Alternatives
1YHWH (the divine name)יהוה / YHWHJehováCriticalThe Temple as God’s Dwelling / all doctrinesNew (1 Kings)Follows RV1960 precedent, consistent with the baseline’s RV-anchored register. Rejected: “Señor” alone (reserved for Adonai/generic lordship and for the baseline’s Christological “Señor”/kyrios entry — using it for YHWH would blur the OT/NT lordship distinction); “Yavé”/“Yahvé” (Catholic-tradition alternative, valid but inconsistent with this curriculum’s RV anchor).
2Lord GOD (Adonai YHWH)אֲדֹנָי יהוה / Adonai YHWHSeñor JehováCriticalTemple as God’s Dwelling; Lordship (cross-reference to baseline)New (1 Kings)Compound title; both elements must be retained. Never collapse to only “Jehová” or only “Señor.”
3Baalבַּעַל / Ba’alBaalCriticalElijah and the Contest with BaalNew (1 Kings)Proper noun, retained untranslated. NEVER rendered “señor/amo” despite the literal Canaanite meaning — this is the single highest-priority disambiguation rule in the whole curriculum, given collision with the baseline’s Critical “Señor” (kyrios/Christ) entry.

Salvation, Covenant, and Forgiveness Terms

#TermOriginalSpanish RenderingRiskDoctrineStatusNotes / Rejected Alternatives
4covenantבְּרִית / berithpactoHighDivided Kingdom and Covenant UnfaithfulnessReused (baseline)Exact reuse; do not substitute “alianza.”
5steadfast love / covenant loyaltyחֶסֶד / chesedmisericordiaHighCovenant Unfaithfulness; Solomon’s WisdomNew (1 Kings)Rejected: “amor” alone (too generic, loses covenant-loyalty force); “fidelidad” alone (loses the relational-kindness dimension). Must be taught with explicit covenant-loyalty framing, paired with pacto.
6forgiveסָלַח / salachperdonarCriticalThe Temple as God’s Dwelling (prayer of dedication)New (1 Kings)Rejected framing: forgiveness contingent on sacramental absolution or accumulated penance — the text presents direct divine forgiveness in response to prayer and repentance. Parallels baseline’s Critical “salvación” caution against a merit-and-mediation framework.
7sinחָטָא / chatapecadoMediumUniversal accountability (cross-reference to baseline)Reused (baseline)Exact reuse; never soften to “falta.”
8turn / repent, returnשׁוּב / shuvvolverse / arrepentirseHighIdolatry and Its ConsequencesNew (1 Kings)Must convey direct turning to God, not a required priestly-mediated confession sequence.
9law / statutes / commandments / judgmentsתּוֹרָה, חֻקִּים, מִצְוֹת, מִשְׁפָּטִים / torah, chuqqim, mitzvot, mishpatimley / estatutos / mandamientos / juiciosHighDivided Kingdom and Covenant UnfaithfulnessTorah = Reused (baseline) (“ley”); chuqqim/mitzvot/mishpatim = New (1 Kings)The baseline’s “ley” covers Torah generally; 1 Kings requires the more granular “estatutos/mandamientos/juicios” for specific covenant-stipulation categories in David’s charge (2:3) and Solomon’s prayer (8:58, 8:61).
10election / separated as inheritanceנַחֲלָה, הִפְרִיד / nachalah, hifridheredad; apartar/separarHigh— (cross-reference to baseline “elección”)New (1 Kings)Reinforces baseline’s caution against fatalistic “destino/suerte” framing.

Temple and Sacred Space Terms

#TermOriginalSpanish RenderingRiskDoctrineStatusNotes / Rejected Alternatives
11house (of the LORD) / templeבַּיִת / הֵיכָל / bayith / heikhalcasa (de Jehová) / temploHighThe Temple as God’s Dwelling among His PeopleNew (1 Kings)“Casa” for bayith (general/predominant), “templo” for heikhal (inner hall). Must be taught as a unique, unrepeatable OT sanctuary — not a template for contemporary church-building theology.
12dwell (theological tension of v.27)יָשַׁב / yashabhabitarCriticalThe Temple as God’s Dwelling among His PeopleNew (1 Kings)Must hold transcendence and gracious presence together; reject both a deistic-absence reading and a magical-containment reading.
13name (of the LORD)שֵׁם / shemnombreCriticalThe Temple as God’s Dwelling among His PeopleNew (1 Kings)Deuteronomic Name theology; must not be reduced to a mere verbal label nor treated as a quasi-magical invocation formula (risk of collision with folk-Catholic/curanderismo “en el nombre de…” usage).
14Most Holy Place / Holy of Holiesקֹדֶשׁ הַקֳּדָשִׁים / qodesh haqqodashimLugar SantísimoHighThe Temple as God’s Dwelling among His PeopleNew (1 Kings)Built on baseline “santo” root; specific architectural/theological compound term.
15ark of the covenantאֲרוֹן הַבְּרִית / aron habberitharca del pactoCriticalThe Temple as God’s Dwelling among His PeopleNew (1 Kings)Reuses baseline “pacto.” Must never be treated as a talisman/relic with independent power.
16cherubimכְּרוּבִים / keruvimquerubinesMediumThe Temple as God’s Dwelling among His PeopleNew (1 Kings)Distinguish from cute infant-angel iconography; OT referent is a fearsome guardian being.
17consecrate / dedicateקָדַשׁ, חֲנֻכָּה / qadash, chanukkahconsagrar / dedicarHighThe Temple as God’s Dwelling among His PeopleNew (1 Kings)Unique, unrepeatable redemptive-historical event; not a template equating contemporary building dedications with this weight.
18glory (of the LORD, filling the house)כָּבוֹד / kabodgloriaHighThe Temple as God’s Dwelling among His People (cross-reference to baseline “deity of Christ”)Reused (baseline)Exact reuse.
19dwelling place (in heaven)מְקוֹם שִׁבְתֶּךָ / mekom shivtekalugar de tu moradaMediumThe Temple as God’s Dwelling among His PeopleNew (1 Kings)Reinforces that heaven, not the temple building itself, is God’s true dwelling.

Prayer, Prophecy, and Confession Terms

#TermOriginalSpanish RenderingRiskDoctrineStatusNotes / Rejected Alternatives
20prayer / pleaתְּפִלָּה, תְּחִנָּה / tephillah, techinnahoración / súplicaHighThe Temple as God’s Dwelling among His PeopleNew (1 Kings)Must not default to a saint/Marian-mediation model, per baseline’s Critical “intercesión” caution — Solomon prays directly to God.
21word of the LORD (prophetic formula)דְּבַר־יהוה / devar-YHWHla palabra de JehováHighProphetic Confrontation of KingsNew (1 Kings)Must be rendered identically at every occurrence throughout the book (recurs 1 Kgs 13, 14, 16, 17, 20, 21, 22).
22man of Godאִישׁ הָאֱלֹהִים / ish ha’elohimhombre de DiosMediumProphetic Confrontation of KingsNew (1 Kings)Distinguish nuance from generic “profeta” (baseline, Low risk) as an authorized-confrontation title.
23signאוֹת / othseñalLowProphetic Confrontation of KingsNew (1 Kings)Standard, minimal risk.
24true prophet vs. (court) prophetsנָבִיא (בֶּאֱמֶת) / navi (be’emet)profeta verdadero / falsos profetasHighProphetic Confrontation of KingsNew (1 Kings)Reuses baseline “profeta.” Truth is measured by conformity to God’s word, not by numerical or court consensus.
25lying spiritרוּחַ שֶׁקֶר / ruach sheqerespíritu de mentiraHighProphetic Confrontation of Kings (cross-reference to baseline “providence”)New (1 Kings)Judicial permission/hardening, not divine endorsement of deceit; requires careful framing.
26did right/evil in the eyes of the LORD (regnal formula)עָשָׂה הַיָּשָׁר/הָרַע בְּעֵינֵי יהוהhizo lo recto / hizo lo malo ante los ojos de JehováMediumDivided Kingdom and Covenant UnfaithfulnessNew (1 Kings)Recurring evaluative refrain across chs. 15-22; render identically every occurrence.

Idolatry Terms

#TermOriginalSpanish RenderingRiskDoctrineStatusNotes / Rejected Alternatives
27other godsאֱלֹהִים אֲחֵרִים / elohim acherimdioses ajenos / otros diosesCriticalIdolatry and Its ConsequencesNew (1 Kings)Direct first-commandment violation language.
28high placesבָּמוֹת / bamothlugares altosHighIdolatry and Its ConsequencesNew (1 Kings)Risk of conflation with legitimate hillside shrines/pilgrimage sites in Latin American Catholic devotional culture; the condemned pattern is syncretistic worship, not elevation per se — teach the distinction explicitly.
29abominationתּוֹעֵבָה / to’ebahabominaciónCriticalIdolatry and Its ConsequencesNew (1 Kings)Must not be softened.
30golden calf/calvesעֵגֶל זָהָב / egel zahavbecerro(s) de oroCriticalIdolatry and Its Consequences; Divided KingdomNew (1 Kings)Direct Exodus 32 echo; make explicit in teaching.
31Ashtoreth / Milcom / Chemoshעַשְׁתֹּרֶת / מִלְכֹּם / כְּמוֹשׁAstarot / Milcom / QuemosHighIdolatry and Its ConsequencesNew (1 Kings)Proper nouns; do not draw loose equivalence with contemporary Afro-diasporic devotional figures — teach historical specificity.
32Asherahאֲשֵׁרָה / asherahAseraHighIdolatry and Its ConsequencesNew (1 Kings)Proper noun; do not equate with Marian devotion — the relevant general parallel is only the danger of a physical cultic object becoming venerated in its own right.
33cult prostitutionקָדֵשׁ / qadeshprostitución cúltica / prostitutas ritualesMediumIdolatry and Its ConsequencesNew (1 Kings)Handle with sober historical explanation.
34devoted to destruction (the ban)חֵרֶם / cheremanatema / destinado a la destrucción totalCriticalIdolatry and Its Consequences; Prophetic Confrontation of KingsNew (1 Kings)Historically bounded OT holy-war category; must not be generalized into a timeless ethical principle nor dismissed without theological explanation.

Wisdom, Kingship, and Anointing Terms

#TermOriginalSpanish RenderingRiskDoctrineStatusNotes / Rejected Alternatives
35wisdomחָכְמָה / chokmahsabiduríaCriticalSolomon’s Wisdom and Its LimitsNew (1 Kings)Highest-stakes lexical item in the book for this destination culture: strong extra-biblical association with the Claves de Salomón grimoire tradition (folk magic/curanderismo circulation in Latin America) and with Freemasonry’s Solomon’s Temple symbolism. Every occurrence requires explicit teaching framing as God-given moral/governing discernment, granted in answer to prayer — never esoteric or occult knowledge.
36discernment / understandingבִּינָה, תְּבוּנָה / binah, tebunahdiscernimiento / entendimientoMediumSolomon’s Wisdom and Its LimitsNew (1 Kings)
37judgmentמִשְׁפָּט / mishpatjuicioMediumSolomon’s Wisdom and Its LimitsNew (1 Kings)Note existing Spanish idiom “el juicio de Salomón”; reinforce the divine source of the gift so the idiom is not read as secular folk-wisdom.
38throne / (human) kingdomכִּסֵּא, מַלְכוּת / kise, malkuthtrono / reinoMediumThe Divided Kingdom and Covenant UnfaithfulnessNew (1 Kings)Distinguish from baseline “reino de Dios” (Medium risk) — this is the human Davidic dynastic throne/kingdom, not God’s cosmic reign.
39anoint / anointing (royal or prophetic)מָשַׁח / mashachungir / unciónHighSolomon’s Wisdom (royal legitimacy); Prophetic Confrontation of Kings (Elisha’s commissioning)New (1 Kings)Must be distinguished from the baseline’s Critical “Mesías” (the unique, definitive Anointed One) — these are typological royal/prophetic anointings, not the messianic fulfillment itself.

Confession, Nations, and Mission Terms

#TermOriginalSpanish RenderingRiskDoctrineStatusNotes / Rejected Alternatives
40”The LORD, he is God!” (confession)יהוה הוּא הָאֱלֹהִים / YHWH hu ha’elohim¡Jehová es el Dios!CriticalElijah and the Contest with BaalNew (1 Kings)RV1960 precedent. Structural OT counterpart to baseline’s Critical NT confession “Jesús es el Señor” (Romans 10:9) — cross-reference explicitly in teaching materials.
41limping/wavering between two opinionsפֹּסְחִים עַל־שְׁתֵּי הַסְּעִפִּיםclaudicar entre dos pensamientosHighElijah and the Contest with BaalNew (1 Kings)RV1960 wording retained for register consistency. Key syncretism-critique term.
42a still small voiceקוֹל דְּמָמָה דַקָּה / qol demamah daqqahun silbo apacible y delicadoHighElijah and the Contest with BaalNew (1 Kings)RV1960 wording retained. Guard against generalized “inner voice” mystical misreading detached from Scripture’s authority; this is a specific historical theophany to Elijah.
43remnantשְׁאָר / sh’arremanenteHighElijah and the Contest with Baal (cross-reference to baseline “elección”)New (1 Kings)God’s sovereign preservation of a faithful minority amid national apostasy.
44foreigner / strangerנָכְרִי / nokriextranjeroHighThe Temple as God’s Dwelling among His People (universal scope)New (1 Kings)Distinct from baseline’s NT “gentiles” category; note theological continuity for teaching (this OT text seeds later NT universalism) without collapsing the terms.
45fear (reverence)יָרֵא / yaretemerMediumThe Temple as God’s Dwelling among His PeopleNew (1 Kings)Teach as reverent awe, not servile terror.
46raised to life / revived (OT resuscitation)חַי / chai (וַתֵּחִי)revivió / volvió a vivirHighElijah and the Contest with BaalNew (1 Kings)Do NOT use “resurrección” (baseline reserves this Critical term for Christ’s own bodily, once-for-all resurrection and the general eschatological resurrection). Explicit distinction required.

Justice and Repentance Terms

#TermOriginalSpanish RenderingRiskDoctrineStatusNotes / Rejected Alternatives
47righteous / wickedצַדִּיק / רָשָׁע / tsaddiq / rashajusto / impíoHighThe Temple as God’s Dwelling among His PeopleNew (1 Kings)Do not import the full Romans forensic-justification framework onto this local judicial-dispute context, though the terminological continuity is worth noting for teaching purposes.
48innocent bloodדָּם נָקִי / dam naqisangre inocenteMediumProphetic Confrontation of KingsNew (1 Kings)Naboth’s vineyard narrative.
49sackcloth (repentance ritual)שַׂק / saqcilicioLow-MediumProphetic Confrontation of KingsNew (1 Kings)Ahab’s partial repentance after Elijah’s confrontation.
50inheritance (land tenure)נַחֲלָה / nachalahheredadHighProphetic Confrontation of KingsNew (1 Kings)Same entry as #10 above; applied here to Naboth’s covenant-protected ancestral land.
51plague / famine / pestilence (covenant-curse catalogue)דֶּבֶר, רָעָב, נֶגֶף / dever, ra’av, negefplaga / hambre / pestilenciaMediumThe Temple as God’s Dwelling among His PeopleNew (1 Kings)Deuteronomic covenant-curse background; avoid an individualized “all suffering = personal punishment” reading.
52captivity / exileשְׁבִי / shevicautiverioMediumDivided Kingdom and Covenant UnfaithfulnessNew (1 Kings)Ultimate covenant-curse horizon anticipated in Solomon’s prayer.
53cut off (covenant-curse threat)כָּרַת / karathcortar / quitarHighDivided Kingdom and Covenant UnfaithfulnessNew (1 Kings)Conditional covenant threat, not arbitrary cruelty — retain the conditional framing.

Critical Risk Terms

Righteousness

Approved rendering: justicia
Transliteration: dikaiosynē (Greek, NT); cf. Hebrew tsedeq/tsedaqah
Doctrine: Salvation (Romans) / cross-referenced in 1 Kings 8:31-32 legal-dispute sense
Rejected alternatives: rectitud moral autónoma, mérito acumulado

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. In 1 Kings 8:31-32 the cognate ‘justo/impío’ (see that entry) is used for a local judicial dispute, not the Pauline forensic-justification doctrine; do not import the full Romans framework onto that narrower context, but preserve terminological continuity for teaching.

Salvation

Approved rendering: salvación
Transliteration: sōtēria (Greek, NT)
Doctrine: Salvation (Romans) / background contrast for ‘Direct Prayer and Forgiveness through the Temple’
Rejected alternatives: salvarse por buenas obras, merecer el cielo mediante sacramentos y penitencia

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Not itself a 1 Kings term, but 1 Kings 8:22-53’s direct-forgiveness-through-prayer pattern anticipates the same anti-merit, anti-mediation concern this baseline entry protects; useful cross-reference for teaching, not a term occurring in 1 Kings itself.

Lord

Approved rendering: Señor
Transliteration: kyrios (Greek, NT)
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ (Romans) / disambiguation anchor for 1 Kings ‘Jehová’ and ‘Baal’
Rejected alternatives: Señor mío (devotional-only, without lordship claim over the whole of life)

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Reserved exclusively for Christ’s NT lordship confession (Romans 10:9). NEVER use for YHWH alone (use ‘Jehová’) and NEVER use for Baal (retain untranslated). The compound OT title ‘Señor Jehová’ (Adonai YHWH, see entry) is the only context in which ‘Señor’ legitimately appears in 1 Kings material, and there it renders Adonai specifically, paired with ‘Jehová,’ not standing alone.

Messiah

Approved rendering: Mesías
Transliteration: Christos / Mashiach
Doctrine: Messianic Promise (Romans) / disambiguation anchor for ‘anoint’ in 1 Kings
Rejected alternatives: un ungido más, entre otros santos o profetas venerados

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. 1 Kings’ royal anointing of Solomon (ch. 1) and prophetic anointing of Elisha (19:15-16) are typological anointings pointing forward to, but never identical with, this unique definitive Anointed One. Never let ‘ungir/unción’ (see entry) drift into implying either anointing itself fulfills ‘Mesías.‘

Intercession

Approved rendering: intercesión
Transliteration: hyperentynchanei / enteuxis
Doctrine: Prayer and Intercession (Romans) / background contrast for ‘Direct Prayer and Forgiveness through the Temple’
Rejected alternatives: intercesión de los santos o de la Virgen como mediadores necesarios ante Dios

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Solomon’s prayer (1 Kings 8:22-53) already models direct petition to God without a described human/angelic mediator; this OT pattern reinforces, and should be cross-referenced with, the baseline’s caution against a saint/Marian-intercession default reading.

Saints

Approved rendering: santos
Transliteration: hagioi (Greek, NT)
Doctrine: Sainthood (Romans) / background contrast for ‘Most Holy Place’ and ‘consecrate/dedicate’
Rejected alternatives: los santos (canonizados, objeto de veneración e intercesión)

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Not a 1 Kings term itself, but the baseline’s ‘set apart’ caution is the direct conceptual ancestor of 1 Kings’ ‘separated_set_apart’ (Israel set apart as God’s possession, 8:53) and ‘Lugar Santísimo’ entries; keep the OT election-of-a-nation sense distinct from the NT corporate-believer sense.

God

Approved rendering: Dios
Transliteration: theos / Elohim / YHWH
Doctrine: Deity of Christ (Romans) / all 1 Kings doctrines

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Used for Elohim generically throughout 1 Kings (‘el hombre de Dios,’ ‘otros dioses’ as false gods). Must remain sharply distinct from ‘Jehová’ (the personal covenant name) and from ‘Baal’ (a specific rival deity’s proper name) — ‘Dios’ alone never substitutes for either in a context requiring the covenant name or the rival deity’s name.

Yhwh

Approved rendering: Jehová
Transliteration: YHWH
Doctrine: Divine Name and Identity (cross-doctrinal; anchors Temple as God’s Dwelling, Elijah and the Contest with Baal)
Rejected alternatives: Señor (reserved for the baseline’s Christological kyrios entry), Yavé/Yahvé (valid Catholic-tradition alternative, inconsistent with this curriculum’s RV anchor)
Original: יהוה
Category: Divine Name & Identity

Governing convention for the whole 1 Kings curriculum, following Reina-Valera precedent. NEVER rendered ‘Señor’ alone — doing so would blur the OT/NT lordship distinction and risk conflating YHWH with Baal (a rival deity whose name itself means ‘lord/master’).

Lord God Adonai Yhwh

Approved rendering: Señor Jehová
Transliteration: Adonai YHWH
Doctrine: Divine Name and Identity / Direct Prayer and Forgiveness through the Temple
Rejected alternatives: Jehová (loses the Adonai/lordship element), Señor (loses the covenant-name element)
Original: אֲדֹנָי יהוה
Category: Divine Name & Identity

Compound divine title closing Solomon’s prayer (8:53), per Génesis 15:2 RV precedent. Both elements must always be retained together; never collapse to only one term.

Baal

Approved rendering: Baal
Transliteration: Ba’al
Doctrine: Exclusive Monotheism versus Baal Worship
Rejected alternatives: señor, amo (both literal but doctrinally catastrophic given collision with the baseline’s Critical ‘Señor’/kyrios entry)
Original: בַּעַל
Category: Divine Name & Identity

Retained as an untranslated proper noun with zero exceptions. This is the single highest-priority disambiguation rule in the entire 1 Kings curriculum. Any draft rendering Baal with a common noun for lordship/mastery must be automatically escalated.

Dwell

Approved rendering: habitar
Transliteration: yashab
Doctrine: Divine Transcendence and Immanence at the Temple
Original: יָשַׁב
Category: Temple & Sacred Space

1 Kings 8:27, the fulcrum verse of the whole ‘Temple as God’s Dwelling’ doctrine. Must convey both transcendence (uncontainable) and gracious immanence (chosen presence) simultaneously — reject both a deistic-absence reading and a magical spatial-containment reading akin to folk-Catholic/Afro-diasporic sacred-object frameworks.

Name Of The Lord

Approved rendering: nombre
Transliteration: shem
Doctrine: The Name of the LORD Dwelling in the Temple
Original: שֵׁם
Category: Temple & Sacred Space

1 Kings 8:16-20, 8:29, 8:41-43, 9:3. Deuteronomic Name theology: God’s presence/character caused to dwell at the temple by his own gracious appointment. Must never be reduced to a verbal label nor taught as evidence that invoking a divine or saintly name carries inherent quasi-magical power (live risk given curanderismo/folk-Catholic ‘en el nombre de…’ invocation practices).

Ark Of The Covenant

Approved rendering: arca del pacto
Transliteration: aron habberith
Doctrine: The Ark of the Covenant and Temple Dedication
Original: אֲרוֹן הַבְּרִית
Category: Temple & Sacred Space

Central OT symbol of God’s presence and covenant, reusing baseline ‘pacto.’ Must never be treated as a talisman or relic with independent spiritual power — a live risk given prevalent Latin American folk-Catholic and Afro-diasporic devotion to sacred objects and relics.

Forgive

Approved rendering: perdonar
Transliteration: salach
Doctrine: Direct Prayer and Forgiveness through the Temple
Rejected alternatives: forgiveness framed as contingent on sacramental absolution or accumulated penance
Original: סָלַח
Category: Prayer & Repentance

Recurring refrain (8:30, 34, 36, 39, 50). Direct divine pardon in response to prayer and repentance. Parallels the baseline’s Critical ‘salvación’ caution against a merit-and-mediation framework.

Other Gods

Approved rendering: dioses ajenos / otros dioses
Transliteration: elohim acherim
Doctrine: Idolatry as First Commandment Violation
Rejected alternatives: framing as ‘cultural blending’ or ‘religious tolerance’
Original: אֱלֹהִים אֲחֵרִים
Category: Idolatry

1 Kings 11:1-8. Direct first-commandment violation; the hinge event of the book’s decline narrative. Must not be softened given contemporary Latin American syncretistic-pluralism norms.

Abomination

Approved rendering: abominación
Transliteration: to’ebah
Doctrine: Idolatry as First Commandment Violation
Original: תּוֹעֵבָה
Category: Idolatry

1 Kings 11:5-7. The text’s own strongest term of moral judgment against idolatry; must not be softened.

Golden Calf

Approved rendering: becerro(s) de oro
Transliteration: egel zahav
Doctrine: Jeroboam’s Golden Calves as Renewed Exodus Apostasy
Original: עֵגֶל זָהָב
Category: Idolatry

1 Kings 12:25-33. Direct echo of Exodus 32’s paradigmatic idolatry, now institutionalized as state religion; the Exodus parallel must be made explicit in teaching.

Cherem Devoted To Destruction

Approved rendering: anatema / destinado a la destrucción total
Transliteration: cherem
Doctrine: Cherem — the Ban on Devoted-to-Destruction Judgment
Rejected alternatives: anatema alone (collapses into the church-discipline/excommunication sense in ordinary Spanish)
Original: חֵרֶם
Category: Idolatry

1 Kings 20:35-43. A historically bounded OT holy-war legal category. Use the hybrid rendering (loanword plus gloss) every occurrence, never ‘anatema’ alone; must not be generalized into a timeless ethical principle nor dismissed as mere barbarism.

Wisdom

Approved rendering: sabiduría
Transliteration: chokmah
Doctrine: Solomon’s Wisdom as a Divine Gift / The Limits and Failure of Solomon’s Wisdom
Rejected alternatives: no viable lexical substitute exists; the term is retained with mandatory doctrinal fencing rather than replaced
Original: חָכְמָה
Category: Kingship & Wisdom

THE single highest-stakes term in the book for this destination culture. Strong extra-biblical association with the Claves/Clavículas de Salomón grimoire tradition (folk magic, curanderismo) and Freemasonry’s Solomonic Temple symbolism. Every occurrence (chs. 3, 4, 10, 11) requires an explicit teaching note: God-given practical/moral discernment for righteous governance, granted through prayer — never esoteric or occult knowledge.

Lord He Is God Confession

Approved rendering: ¡Jehová es el Dios!
Transliteration: YHWH hu ha’elohim
Doctrine: Exclusive Monotheism versus Baal Worship
Original: יהוה הוּא הָאֱלֹהִים
Category: Elijah & the Contest with Baal

1 Kings 18:39, following RV1960 precedent. The structural, functional OT counterpart to the baseline’s Critical NT confession ‘Jesús es el Señor’ (Romans 10:9); recommend explicit cross-referencing in teaching materials.

High Risk Terms

Covenant

Approved rendering: pacto
Transliteration: diathēkē (Greek, NT); berith (Hebrew)
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant (Romans) / Conditional Covenant Blessing and the Davidic Promise; The Ark of the Covenant and Temple Dedication
Rejected alternatives: contrato legal, alianza (valid Catholic-tradition synonym, not used in this curriculum)
Original: בְּרִית
Category: Covenant & Law

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Governs 1 Kings 2:2-4 (David’s charge), 8:23 (God ‘keeping covenant’), 8:25 (conditional Davidic promise), and the compound term ‘arca del pacto.’ Never substitute ‘alianza’ for consistency with the baseline’s RV-anchored choice.

Law

Approved rendering: ley
Transliteration: nomos (Greek, NT); torah (Hebrew)
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy (Romans) / The Divided Kingdom and Covenant Unfaithfulness

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Covers Torah generally in 1 Kings (e.g., 2:3). For the more granular covenant-stipulation categories (chuqqim/mitzvot/mishpatim), see ‘law_statutes’ below; do not flatten those distinct Hebrew terms into a bare ‘ley.‘

Election

Approved rendering: elección
Transliteration: eklogē (Greek, NT)
Doctrine: Effectual Calling (Romans) / The Faithful Remnant Preserved by God; background for ‘separated_set_apart’ and ‘nachalah_heredad’
Rejected alternatives: destino, suerte

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. 1 Kings 8:51-53 (Israel ‘separated’ as God’s heredad/possession) and 19:14-18 (the 7,000-strong remnant) are OT instances of the same sovereign, personal-choice pattern this baseline entry protects against fatalistic ‘destino/suerte’ readings.

Sanctification

Approved rendering: santificación
Transliteration: hagiasmos (Greek, NT)
Doctrine: Sanctification (Romans) / background root for ‘consecrate_dedicate’ and ‘Lugar Santísimo’
Rejected alternatives: purificación penitencial, vía purgativa

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Its root sense (being made/set apart holy) underlies the new 1 Kings compound terms ‘consagrar/dedicar’ and ‘Lugar Santísimo,’ both of which must likewise avoid a penitential/merit-earned framing.

Resurrection

Approved rendering: resurrección
Transliteration: anastasis (Greek, NT)
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ (Romans) / disambiguation anchor for 1 Kings ‘revived_raised_to_life’
Rejected alternatives: reencarnación

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. ABSOLUTE RULE: never use this word for the widow of Zarephath’s son (17:22); that is a temporary resuscitation (‘revivió/volvió a vivir’), not this Critical/High term reserved for Christ’s own bodily, once-for-all, eschatologically definitive resurrection.

Grace

Approved rendering: gracia
Transliteration: charis (Greek, NT)
Doctrine: Grace (Romans) / background contrast for ‘Conditional Covenant Blessing and the Davidic Promise’
Rejected alternatives: favor merecido, recompensa por buenas obras

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Not itself a 1 Kings term, but the conditional Davidic covenant (2:2-4; 9:4-9) must not drift toward a merit-cooperation system paralleling the Tridentine risk this baseline entry already flags; God’s covenant loyalty (chesed) precedes and grounds Solomon’s obedience, it is not earned by it.

Law Statutes

Approved rendering: ley / estatutos / mandamientos / juicios
Transliteration: torah, chuqqim, mitzvot, mishpatim
Doctrine: The Divided Kingdom as Covenant Judgment / Conditional Covenant Blessing and the Davidic Promise
Rejected alternatives: collapsing all four Hebrew categories into a single bare ‘ley’
Original: תּוֹרָה, חֻקִּים, מִצְוֹת, מִשְׁפָּטִים
Category: Covenant & Law

1 Kings 2:3, 8:58, 8:61. The granular covenant-stipulation categories (chuqqim/mitzvot/mishpatim) require distinct renderings from general Torah (‘ley’) to preserve distinctions the Hebrew text itself makes and the covenant-conditionality doctrine depends on.

Nachalah Heredad

Approved rendering: heredad
Transliteration: nachalah
Doctrine: Direct Prayer and Forgiveness through the Temple (8:51-53) / Prophetic Confrontation of Royal Injustice (Naboth’s Vineyard, ch. 21)
Rejected alternatives: posesión (too generic, loses covenant-legal weight)
Original: נַחֲלָה
Category: Covenant & Law

Two senses: (1) Israel as God’s own possessed people (8:51-53); (2) ancestral tribal land under covenant law (Naboth’s vineyard, ch. 21). Reinforces the baseline’s caution against fatalistic ‘destino/suerte’ framing of election — this is personal, covenantal possession.

Separated Set Apart

Approved rendering: apartar / separar
Transliteration: hifrid
Doctrine: Direct Prayer and Forgiveness through the Temple
Original: הִפְרִיד / hifrid
Category: Covenant & Law

1 Kings 8:53. God’s electing act distinguishing Israel from all other nations. Conceptually parallel to, but historically prior to and distinct from, the baseline’s Critical ‘santos’ ‘set apart’ language for the church; do not conflate the two redemptive-historical moments.

Cut Off

Approved rendering: cortar / quitar
Transliteration: karath
Doctrine: The Divided Kingdom as Covenant Judgment
Original: כָּרַת
Category: Covenant & Law

1 Kings 9:6-9. God’s warning that unfaithfulness will terminate Israel’s possession of the land, paired with 8:25’s conditional promise. Must retain the conditional, covenantal force — not arbitrary divine cruelty.

House Temple

Approved rendering: casa / templo
Transliteration: bayith / heikhal
Doctrine: Divine Transcendence and Immanence at the Temple
Original: בַּיִת / הֵיכָל
Category: Temple & Sacred Space

‘Casa (de Jehová)’ for bayith (predominant RV convention), ‘templo’ for heikhal (the inner hall specifically). Both refer to this one unrepeatable OT sanctuary; must not be transferred wholesale as a template for contemporary church-building theology.

Most Holy Place

Approved rendering: Lugar Santísimo
Transliteration: qodesh haqqodashim
Doctrine: Divine Transcendence and Immanence at the Temple
Original: קֹדֶשׁ הַקֳּדָשִׁים
Category: Temple & Sacred Space

The innermost, most sacred chamber housing the ark. Built on baseline ‘santo’ root; must not be confused with loose contemporary usage of ‘santuario’ for any church sanctuary.

Consecrate Dedicate

Approved rendering: consagrar / dedicar
Transliteration: qadash, chanukkah
Doctrine: The Ark of the Covenant and Temple Dedication
Original: קָדַשׁ, חֲנֻכָּה
Category: Temple & Sacred Space

Draws on baseline ‘santificación’ root. A unique, unrepeatable redemptive-historical event; not a template implying that dedicating a contemporary church building carries the same theological weight as this typological sanctuary’s dedication.

Foreigner

Approved rendering: extranjero
Transliteration: nokri
Doctrine: Universal Scope of Prayer toward the Temple
Rejected alternatives: gentiles (baseline’s distinct NT Jew/Gentile category — do not substitute)
Original: נָכְרִי
Category: Temple & Sacred Space

1 Kings 8:41-43. The non-Israelite covenant-outsider explicitly welcomed to pray toward the temple. Socially significant given regional/ethnic hierarchies affecting indigenous and Afro-descendant communities across Latin America; retain unqualified inclusion.

Prayer Plea

Approved rendering: oración / súplica
Transliteration: tephillah, techinnah
Doctrine: Direct Prayer and Forgiveness through the Temple
Original: תְּפִלָּה, תְּחִנָּה
Category: Prayer & Repentance

The backbone of Solomon’s dedicatory prayer. Must not be taught in a way inviting a saint/Marian-intercession model per the baseline’s Critical ‘intercesión’ caution — Solomon prays directly to God.

Turn Repent

Approved rendering: volverse / arrepentirse
Transliteration: shuv
Doctrine: Direct Prayer and Forgiveness through the Temple
Original: שׁוּב
Category: Prayer & Repentance

The central OT repentance term: a direct turning back to covenant loyalty. Must not imply a required sacramental confession-and-absolution sequence as the mechanism.

Confession Of Sin

Approved rendering: hemos pecado / hemos obrado perversamente y con maldad
Transliteration: he’evinu v’hirsha’nu
Doctrine: Direct Prayer and Forgiveness through the Temple
Rejected alternatives: partial-blame or excuse-laden softened renderings
Original: הֶעֱוִינוּ וְהִרְשַׁעְנוּ
Category: Prayer & Repentance

1 Kings 8:47. Full, unqualified corporate confession; a model of the kind of confession the baseline’s ‘Universal Human Accountability’ doctrine calls for.

Righteous Wicked

Approved rendering: justo / impío
Transliteration: tsaddiq / rasha
Doctrine: Direct Prayer and Forgiveness through the Temple
Rejected alternatives: importing the full Romans forensic-justification framework onto this local legal-dispute context
Original: צַדִּיק / רָשָׁע
Category: Prayer & Repentance

1 Kings 8:31-32. A specific legal dispute brought before God, not the Pauline doctrine of justification; note terminological continuity for teaching while keeping referents distinct.

Word Of The Lord

Approved rendering: la palabra de Jehová
Transliteration: vay’hi devar-YHWH
Doctrine: The Authority of the Word of the LORD
Rejected alternatives: free variation across occurrences (e.g. ‘mensaje del Señor,’ ‘palabra divina’)
Original: וַיְהִי דְבַר־יהוה
Category: Prophecy & Confrontation

Recurring prophetic-commissioning formula (chs. 13, 14, 16, 17, 20, 21, 22). Must be rendered identically at every occurrence — a Theological Consistency Rule violation if varied.

True False Prophets

Approved rendering: profeta verdadero / falsos profetas
Transliteration: navi (be’emet)
Doctrine: True Prophecy versus Court/False Prophecy
Original: נָבִיא (בֶּאֱמֶת)
Category: Prophecy & Confrontation

1 Kings 22:5-28. Truth measured by conformity to God’s word and later vindication, never numerical majority or court/institutional approval.

Lying Spirit

Approved rendering: espíritu de mentira
Transliteration: ruach sheqer
Doctrine: Divine Judicial Hardening through a Lying Spirit
Rejected alternatives: framing that implies God himself lying, framing that licenses distrust of Scripture’s own reliability
Original: רוּחַ שֶׁקֶר
Category: Prophecy & Confrontation

1 Kings 22:19-23. God’s judicial permission/sending of deception as judgment on a king already rejecting the true word; parallels the baseline’s ‘providencia’ doctrine and Romans 9’s hardening motifs.

High Places

Approved rendering: lugares altos
Transliteration: bamoth
Doctrine: High Places and Syncretistic Worship
Original: בָּמוֹת
Category: Idolatry

Raised platforms/shrines hosting syncretistic worship rivaling the one legitimate temple. Risk of conflation with legitimate Latin American Catholic hillside shrines/pilgrimage sites (‘el santuario en el cerro’); the condemned pattern is syncretism rivaling exclusive covenant loyalty, not elevation as such — teach the distinction explicitly.

Ashtoreth Milcom Chemosh

Approved rendering: Astarot / Milcom / Quemos
Transliteration: Ashtoreth, Milcom, Chemosh
Doctrine: Idolatry as First Commandment Violation
Rejected alternatives: loose contemporary equivalence with Afro-diasporic devotional figures (orishas, folk saints)
Original: עַשְׁתֹּרֶת, מִלְכֹּם, כְּמוֹשׁ
Category: Idolatry

Proper nouns; standard Spanish Bible transliterations. Teach historical specificity of these ancient national deities rather than a generalized ‘false gods = X’ mapping.

Asherah

Approved rendering: Asera
Transliteration: asherah
Doctrine: Idolatry as First Commandment Violation
Rejected alternatives: equating with Marian devotion or any contemporary devotional practice
Original: אֲשֵׁרָה
Category: Idolatry

Proper noun. The valid general parallel is only the danger of a physical cultic object becoming worshiped in its own right, not a claim about any specific modern practice.

Turned Away Heart

Approved rendering: apartó su corazón
Transliteration: hittah et-levavo
Doctrine: The Limits and Failure of Solomon’s Wisdom
Original: הִטָּה אֶת־לְבָבוֹ
Category: Idolatry

1 Kings 11:3-4. Solomon’s own heart — the organ his God-given wisdom was meant to govern — turning aside to idolatry; central to teaching wisdom’s limits.

Anoint

Approved rendering: ungir / unción
Transliteration: mashach
Doctrine: Royal and Prophetic Anointing as Messianic Typology
Original: מָשַׁח
Category: Kingship & Wisdom

Solomon’s royal anointing (ch. 1) and Elisha’s prophetic commissioning (19:15-16). Must be distinguished from the baseline’s Critical ‘Mesías’ — these are typological anointings, not the messianic fulfillment itself.

Limping Between Two Opinions

Approved rendering: claudicar entre dos pensamientos
Transliteration: pos’chim al-sh’tei has’ippim
Doctrine: Syncretism and Divided Religious Allegiance
Original: פֹּסְחִים עַל־שְׁתֵּי הַסְּעִפִּים
Category: Elijah & the Contest with Baal

1 Kings 18:21, RV1960 wording retained for register consistency. Elijah’s challenge to syncretistic double allegiance; a template for confronting dual religious loyalty, relevant given widespread syncretistic practice across Latin America.

Fire From Heaven

Approved rendering: fuego del cielo
Transliteration: esh min-hashamayim
Doctrine: Exclusive Monotheism versus Baal Worship
Original: אֵשׁ מִן־הַשָּׁמַיִם
Category: Elijah & the Contest with Baal

1 Kings 18:38. God’s decisive, public self-vindication against Baal’s prophets — the dramatic climax of the Carmel contest.

Still Small Voice

Approved rendering: un silbo apacible y delicado
Transliteration: qol demamah daqqah
Doctrine: Divine Self-Revelation in the Still Small Voice
Rejected alternatives: una voz suave y baja (a flatter modern rendering that loses RV-tradition register)
Original: קוֹל דְּמָמָה דַקָּה
Category: Elijah & the Contest with Baal

1 Kings 19:12, retaining RV1960’s own established wording. Guard against a New Age/generalized ‘inner voice’ mystical misreading detached from Scripture’s authority; this is a specific historical theophany to Elijah, not an epistemic template.

Remnant

Approved rendering: remanente
Transliteration: sh’ar
Doctrine: The Faithful Remnant Preserved by God
Original: שְׁאָר (via ‘seven thousand’)
Category: Elijah & the Contest with Baal

1 Kings 19:14-18, the 7,000 who have not bowed to Baal. Connects directly to the baseline’s High ‘elección’ doctrine; avoid fatalistic ‘destino/suerte’ framing.

Revived Raised To Life

Approved rendering: revivió / volvió a vivir
Transliteration: chai / vattechi
Doctrine: Exclusive Monotheism versus Baal Worship (Elijah’s ministry)
Rejected alternatives: resurrección (baseline’s Critical term, reserved exclusively for Christ’s own bodily, once-for-all resurrection)
Original: חַי (וַתֵּחִי)
Category: Elijah & the Contest with Baal

1 Kings 17:22, the widow of Zarephath’s son. A genuine but temporary resuscitation anticipating, but not equivalent to, Christ’s resurrection. NEVER use ‘resurrección’ here — automatic escalation on any such drift.

Steadfast Love Chesed

Approved rendering: misericordia
Transliteration: chesed
Doctrine: God’s Covenant Loyalty (Chesed) to David and Israel
Rejected alternatives: amor (too generic, loses covenant-loyalty force), fidelidad (loses the relational-kindness dimension)
Original: חֶסֶד
Category: Relational & Covenant Terms

1 Kings 2:7, 3:6, 8:23. ‘Misericordia’ alone can read as pity/charity in everyday Spanish; must always be taught with the covenant-keeping nuance explicit, paired with ‘pacto’ (‘la misericordia del pacto’).

Medium Risk Terms

Sin

Approved rendering: pecado
Transliteration: hamartia (Greek, NT); chata (Hebrew)
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability (Romans) / Direct Prayer and Forgiveness through the Temple
Rejected alternatives: falta (minimizing euphemism common in pastoral speech)
Original: חָטָא
Category: Sin

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. 1 Kings 8:46 (‘there is no one who does not sin’) is a direct OT anticipation of Romans 3:23’s universal claim; never soften to ‘falta.‘

Glory

Approved rendering: gloria
Transliteration: doxa (Greek, NT); kabod (Hebrew)
Doctrine: Deity of Christ (Romans) / The Ark of the Covenant and Temple Dedication
Original: כָּבוֹד
Category: Temple & Sacred Space

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Renders kabod in 1 Kings 8:10-11 (the glory-cloud filling the temple at dedication) — the visible confirmation of God’s chosen presence that resolves the transcendence/immanence tension of 8:27.

Providence

Approved rendering: providencia
Transliteration: pronoia (Greek, NT concept term)
Doctrine: Providence (Romans) / Divine Judicial Hardening through a Lying Spirit
Rejected alternatives: destino, la suerte

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Directly relevant background for 1 Kings 22:19-23’s ‘espíritu de mentira’: God’s sovereign, purposive governance extends even into judgment scenes, but must never be taught as God himself lying or as fatalistic ‘destino.‘

Church

Approved rendering: iglesia
Transliteration: ekklēsia (Greek, NT)
Doctrine: Church as God’s People (Romans) / disambiguation anchor for 1 Kings ‘assembly’
Rejected alternatives: la Iglesia (institución jerárquica en sentido católico-institucional)

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. NEVER use for 1 Kings’ ‘qahal’ (see ‘assembly’ entry) — the gathered OT-Israel referent at the temple dedication (8:22) must remain lexically and doctrinally distinct from the NT covenant community.

Kingdom Of God

Approved rendering: reino de Dios
Transliteration: basileia tou theou (Greek, NT)
Doctrine: Kingdom Mission (Romans) / disambiguation anchor for 1 Kings ‘throne_kingdom’

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Must be kept sharply distinct from the human, conditional, dynastic ‘trono/reino’ of David and Solomon (see ‘throne_kingdom’ entry) — the Davidic kingdom typologically points forward to, but is not identical with, God’s unconditional cosmic reign.

Holy

Approved rendering: santo
Transliteration: hagios (Greek, NT)
Doctrine: Sanctification (Romans) / root of 1 Kings ‘Lugar Santísimo’
Rejected alternatives: puro en sentido ritual

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Serves as the lexical root of the new compound term ‘Lugar Santísimo’ (Most Holy Place); that compound must not be confused with the loose contemporary usage of ‘santuario’ for any church sanctuary.

Fear Reverence

Approved rendering: temer
Transliteration: yare
Doctrine: Universal Scope of Prayer toward the Temple
Rejected alternatives: terror (servile fear)
Original: יָרֵא
Category: Divine Name & Identity

1 Kings 8:43. Must be taught as reverent awe/worship-response to God’s greatness, not servile terror — a clarification already familiar in Hispanic Christian catechesis on ‘el temor de Dios.‘

Captivity Exile

Approved rendering: cautiverio
Transliteration: shevi
Doctrine: Covenant Curses: Drought, Famine, Plague, Exile
Original: שְׁבִי
Category: Covenant & Law

1 Kings 8:46-50. Ultimate covenant curse (Deuteronomy 28), historically fulfilled in 722/586 BC. Teach the corporate covenant-curse background, not an individualized punishment reading.

Oath

Approved rendering: juramento
Transliteration: alah
Doctrine: Direct Prayer and Forgiveness through the Temple
Original: אָלָה
Category: Covenant & Law

1 Kings 8:31. Legal-covenantal self-imprecation before God as witness/judge; standard forensic term, minimal collision risk.

Cherubim

Approved rendering: querubines
Transliteration: keruvim
Doctrine: The Ark of the Covenant and Temple Dedication
Original: כְּרוּבִים
Category: Temple & Sacred Space

Guardian throne-attendant beings flanking the ark. Distinguish from the cute winged-infant iconography common in popular Christian and secular Hispanic visual art; the OT referent is a fearsome guardian being.

Dwelling Place In Heaven

Approved rendering: lugar de tu morada
Transliteration: mekom shivteka
Doctrine: Divine Transcendence and Immanence at the Temple
Original: מְקוֹם שִׁבְתֶּךָ
Category: Temple & Sacred Space

Recurring prayer refrain (8:30, 39, 43, 49). Reinforces that heaven, not the temple building, is God’s true dwelling; the temple is the place toward which prayer is directed.

Confess Name

Approved rendering: confesar tu nombre
Transliteration: hodu et-shmeka
Doctrine: The Name of the LORD Dwelling in the Temple
Original: הוֹדוּ אֶת־שְׁמֶךָ
Category: Prayer & Repentance

1 Kings 8:33. Ties back to the Critical ‘nombre’ entry; requires the same care against a magical-invocation misreading.

The Good Way

Approved rendering: el buen camino
Transliteration: haderekh hatovah
Doctrine: Direct Prayer and Forgiveness through the Temple
Original: הַדֶּרֶךְ הַטּוֹבָה
Category: Prayer & Repentance

1 Kings 8:36. God himself teaches covenant faithfulness — moral instruction flows from God, not autonomous human moral achievement; echoes the baseline’s Critical ‘righteousness’ caution.

Know The Heart

Approved rendering: conocer el corazón
Transliteration: yada lev
Doctrine: Direct Prayer and Forgiveness through the Temple
Original: יָדַע לֵב
Category: Prayer & Repentance

1 Kings 8:39. God’s perfect, intimate knowledge of every human being’s inner motives; grounds genuinely personal forgiveness.

Children Of Mankind

Approved rendering: hijos de los hombres / toda la humanidad
Transliteration: b’nei ha’adam
Doctrine: Direct Prayer and Forgiveness through the Temple
Original: בְּנֵי הָאָדָם
Category: Prayer & Repentance

1 Kings 8:39. A universality note resonant with, but not identical to, the baseline’s High ‘Universal Human Accountability’ doctrine.

Compassion

Approved rendering: compasión
Transliteration: rachamim
Doctrine: Covenant Curses: Drought, Famine, Plague, Exile
Original: רַחֲמִים
Category: Prayer & Repentance

1 Kings 8:50. Mercy shown by pagan captors toward exiled Israel, moved by God’s sovereignty. Distinguish from chesed/‘misericordia’ — this is general mercy, not the specific covenant-loyalty term.

Plague Famine Pestilence

Approved rendering: plaga / hambre / pestilencia
Transliteration: dever, ra’av, negef
Doctrine: Covenant Curses: Drought, Famine, Plague, Exile
Original: דֶּבֶר, רָעָב, נֶגֶף
Category: Prayer & Repentance

1 Kings 8:37-40. The Deuteronomic covenant-curse catalogue. Teach the corporate covenantal frame; avoid a reading that treats individual suffering as direct personal punishment, given Hispanic popular piety’s strong link between suffering and sin.

Maintain Cause

Approved rendering: defender su causa
Transliteration: v’shafatta et-mishpatam
Doctrine: Direct Prayer and Forgiveness through the Temple
Original: וְשָׁפַטְתָּ אֶת־מִשְׁפָּטָם

Innocent Blood

Approved rendering: sangre inocente
Transliteration: dam naqi
Doctrine: Prophetic Confrontation of Royal Injustice (Naboth’s Vineyard)
Rejected alternatives: asesinato/homicidio (loses the specific OT legal-covenantal blood-guilt category)

Transliteration: pesha
Doctrine: The Divided Kingdom as Covenant Judgment

1 Kings 12:1-24. The kingdom’s political division portrayed as covenant consequence, not mere dynastic politics.

Transliteration: mashal
Doctrine: The Divided Kingdom as Covenant Judgment

Category: Idolatry

1 Kings 9:7. A sobering counterpoint to 8:41-43’s vision of the nations honoring God’s name through the temple.

Transliteration: binah, tebunah
Doctrine: Solomon’s Wisdom as a Divine Gift
Original: בִּינָה, תְּבוּנָה
Category: Kingship & Wisdom

Judgment

Approved rendering: juicio
Transliteration: mishpat
Doctrine: Solomon’s Wisdom as a Divine Gift
Original: מִשְׁפָּט
Category: Kingship & Wisdom

1 Kings 3:16-28. Note the Spanish cultural idiom ‘el juicio de Salomón’ for a wise verdict; must not reduce Solomon’s judgment to secular folk-wisdom folklore emptied of its stated divine source.

Throne Kingdom

Approved rendering: trono / reino
Transliteration: kise, malkuth
Doctrine: Conditional Covenant Blessing and the Davidic Promise
Original: כִּסֵּא, מַלְכוּת
Category: Kingship & Wisdom

Regnal Evaluation Formula

Approved rendering: hizo lo recto / hizo lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová
Transliteration: asah hayashar / hara be’ene YHWH
Doctrine: The ‘Did Right/Evil in the Eyes of the LORD’ Regnal Formula
Rejected alternatives: free variants such as ‘actuó mal,’ ‘pecó ante Jehová’

Category: Kingship & Wisdom

The recurring narrator’s verdict on each king (14:22; 15:5,26,34; 16:25,30; 22:43). Must be rendered identically at every occurrence — the book’s primary literary device carrying the covenant-unfaithfulness doctrine; lock as an invariant string in translation memory.

Drought

Approved rendering: sequía
Transliteration: batzoreth
Doctrine: Covenant Curses: Drought, Famine, Plague, Exile
Original: בַּצֹּרֶת
Category: Elijah & the Contest with Baal

1 Kings 17:1. Direct polemic against Baal (the supposed storm/rain god); teach explicitly that YHWH, not Baal, controls rain — sets up the ch. 18 contest.

Walk Before

Approved rendering: andar delante de ti
Transliteration: halak lefaneka
Doctrine: God’s Covenant Loyalty (Chesed) to David and Israel
Rejected alternatives: vivir una buena vida (too generic)
Original: הָלַךְ לְפָנֶיךָ
Category: Relational & Covenant Terms

1 Kings 8:23. Idiomatic; retain the relational, covenantal ‘before God’s presence’ sense.

Heart

Approved rendering: corazón
Transliteration: levav
Doctrine: God’s Covenant Loyalty (Chesed) to David and Israel
Original: לֵבָב
Category: Relational & Covenant Terms

1 Kings 8:23 (‘with all their heart’). The seat of covenant loyalty — mind, will, and affections — not merely emotion; teach against a sentimentalized reading.

Heaven Heaven Of Heavens

Approved rendering: cielo / los cielos de los cielos
Transliteration: shamayim / sh’mei hashamayim
Doctrine: Divine Transcendence and Immanence at the Temple
Original: שָׁמַיִם / שְׁמֵי הַשָּׁמַיִם
Category: Relational & Covenant Terms

1 Kings 8:27. Minor risk of a flattened ‘heaven = afterlife destination’ reading rather than ‘the created heavens as a category God transcends’; clarify in teaching.

Low Risk Terms

Gentiles

Approved rendering: gentiles
Transliteration: ethnē (Greek, NT)
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles (Romans) / disambiguation anchor for 1 Kings ‘foreigner’
Rejected alternatives: paganos (pejorative in modern Spanish)

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. NEVER substitute for 1 Kings’ ‘nokri’ (see ‘foreigner’ entry, rendered ‘extranjero’) — that is the distinct OT covenant-outsider category; note the theological continuity (this OT text seeds later NT universalism) without collapsing the two terms.

Prophet

Approved rendering: profeta
Transliteration: prophētēs (Greek, NT); navi (Hebrew)
Doctrine: Inspiration of Scripture (Romans) / The Authority of the Word of the LORD
Rejected alternatives: vidente, adivino

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Used generically throughout 1 Kings; ‘hombre de Dios’ (see entry) is a distinct narrative title emphasizing direct royal confrontation, used alongside but not replacing ‘profeta.‘

Prophecy

Approved rendering: profecía
Transliteration: prophēteia (Greek, NT)
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy (Romans)
Rejected alternatives: horóscopo, predicción esotérica

Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Background term for the many prophetic-word episodes in 1 Kings (chs. 13, 14, 17, 20-22); the specific recurring commissioning formula is captured separately as ‘word_of_the_lord.‘

Sign

Approved rendering: señal
Transliteration: oth
Doctrine: The Authority of the Word of the LORD
Original: אוֹת
Category: Prophecy & Confrontation

Miraculous confirming sign validating a prophetic word (1 Kings 13); standard, minimal-risk term.

Riddles

Transliteration: chidoth
Doctrine: Solomon’s Wisdom as a Divine Gift
Original: חִידוֹת
Category: Kingship & Wisdom

1 Kings 10:1-3, the Queen of Sheba’s test of Solomon. Cultural resonance with the ‘wise ruler tested by riddles’ folk-motif; not itself doctrinally sensitive.

Servant

Approved rendering: siervo
Transliteration: ebed
Doctrine: God’s Covenant Loyalty (Chesed) to David and Israel
Original: עֶבֶד
Category: Relational & Covenant Terms

Royal self-designation of humility before God (David, Solomon); standard Bible-Spanish term, no significant collision.

Rejected alternatives: iglesia (baseline’s NT covenant-community term — do not substitute)
Original: קָהָל
Category: Relational & Covenant Terms

Doctrine: Covenant Curses: Drought, Famine, Plague, Exile
Original: מָטָר
Category: Relational & Covenant Terms

1 Kings 8:35-36. Covenant blessing/curse category tied to agricultural fruitfulness; load-bearing within the covenant-blessing pattern and the Baal-contest polemic (chs. 17-18).
