Comparative Theology
Comparative Theology
Romans repeatedly makes claims whose Spanish vocabulary is shared across Catholic and Protestant tradition, but whose theological content has historically diverged along the Trent-Reformation fault line, alongside newer syncretism risk from folk-Catholic and Afro-diasporic traditions.
| Romans doctrine | Adjacent concept | Key difference |
|---|---|---|
| Justification (justificación) | Tridentine infused righteousness (justicia infundida) | Reformation doctrine: a forensic declaration of righteousness credited by faith (Romans 3-5). Trent (Session VI): righteousness infused and increased through grace-enabled merit and the sacraments. |
| Salvation (salvación) | Merit-and-mediation piety (sacraments, penance, saintly/Marian intercession) | Romans presents salvation as a decisive reconciliation received by faith, not a lifelong, uncertain outcome secured through accumulated religious acts and mediators. |
| Sainthood (santos) | Veneration of canonized saints | Romans 1:7 calls every believer “santo”; popular piety reserves “los santos” for canonized figures who receive veneration and intercession requests. |
| Intercession (intercesión) | Saintly and Marian intercession | Romans 8:26-27, 8:34 describe the Spirit and Christ interceding directly for believers; popular piety centers intercessory prayer on the saints and the Virgin as mediators to God. |
| Holy Spirit / spiritual gifts | Espiritismo mediumship and Santería initiatory gifts (regional, Caribbean/Afro-Latin America) | The Holy Spirit is the personal third Person of the Trinity equipping the church; spirit-mediumship and orisha-gift frameworks describe contact with ancestral or deity spirits for guidance or healing power. |
Why this matters for translation
Unlike languages where a wrong word is obviously wrong, every row above uses vocabulary that sounds completely correct in Spanish — the risk is invisible at the lexical level and only visible at the level of doctrinal content and regional religious practice. translation_memory.json and its notes exist to carry that invisible distinction forward into every translated segment.
