Existing Turkish Bible translations

Kitabı Mukaddes (the contemporary Turkish Bible, produced with the Turkish Bible Society and Yeni Yaşam Yayınları) is the dominant modern Turkish translation in circulation among Turkish-speaking Christian communities, alongside an older 1941 Turkish Bible Society translation still referenced by some readers. This Language Package follows Kitabı Mukaddes precedent for established terms (Tanrı, İsa Mesih, Rab, Kutsal Ruh) rather than introducing new renderings, so this curriculum’s vocabulary matches what a reader would already encounter in a Turkish Bible.

Where existing translations fall short for this curriculum

  • Doctrinal precision vs. readability trade-offs: Kitabı Mukaddes is a translation of Scripture itself, optimized for continuous reading rather than explicit doctrinal instruction. A Bible study curriculum needs to be more explicit than a Bible translation can be — for example, explaining why Tanrı’nın Oğlu (Son of God) does not imply the literal offspring that tawhid forbids, rather than simply using the correct term and trusting context to carry the distinction.
  • No settled apologetic glossary for Muslim-background readers: there is no widely used Turkish glossary specifically built to teach doctrine to a reader coming from an Islamic theological framework, as opposed to translating narrative Scripture for an already-Christian readership. This Language Package’s translation_memory.json fills that gap for this curriculum, in particular by naming and addressing the specific Qur’anic counter-claims rather than assuming they are absent from the reader’s mind.
  • Contested vocabulary choices: some terms (notably whether to use Tanrı or Allah for “God”) remain live points of pastoral judgment among Turkish Christian leaders; this Language Package follows the Tanrı convention used in Kitabı Mukaddes for consistency, while noting that Allah is theologically usable and understood by every Turkish speaker.

Readiness assessment

Turkish is reasonably well-positioned for this curriculum: a contemporary, complete Bible translation already exists with settled vocabulary for its highest-profile terms (Tanrı, İsa Mesih, Kutsal Ruh, Kurtuluş). The translation task here is less about inventing vocabulary from scratch and more about disciplined explanation — making sure every Critical-risk term is taught alongside the specific Islamic counter-claim it addresses, since silence on that point will be read as either ignorance or evasion by a well-informed reader.
