Core Glossary
Core Glossary — 2 Timothy — English → Italian
This glossary compiles every load-bearing term identified in analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md, spanning 2 Timothy chapters 1–4 in full. Terms already present in the Romans baseline (translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json) are marked REUSE and carry their Italian rendering over unchanged, per the hard rule that established renderings must be reused exactly. Terms new to this curriculum are marked NEW and are proposed candidates for formal addition to translation memory in later Phase 1 steps.
Risk tiers follow the baseline four-tier framework: Critical / High / Medium / Low.
Section 1 — Reused Baseline Terms Appearing in 2 Timothy

Section 2 — New 2 Timothy Terms, Organized by Curriculum Doctrine
Doctrine: Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture
| Term (English) | Greek | Transliteration | Italian rendering | Risk | Ref(s) | Risk reasoning |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| All Scripture | πᾶσα γραφή | pasa graphē | tutta la Scrittura | High | 3:16 | Distributive/collective ambiguity of πᾶσα must survive translation; comprehensive authority claim must not be diluted. |
| God-breathed | θεόπνευστος | theopneustos | ispirata da Dio | Critical | 3:16 | Secular “ispirazione” (artistic inspiration) risks flattening the strong divine-origin claim; requires mandatory translator/catechetical gloss at every occurrence. |
| Sacred writings | ἱερὰ γράμματα | hiera grammata | i sacri scritti / le sacre Scritture | Medium-High | 3:15 | Italian tradition collapses this into the same phrase as γραφή, obscuring Paul’s rhetorical distinction between v.15 and v.16. |
| Profitable | ὠφέλιμος | ōphelimos | utile | Low | 3:16 | Stable. |
| Teaching / doctrine | διδασκαλία | didaskalia | insegnamento / dottrina | High | 3:16, 4:2, 4:3 | ”Dottrina” carries Italian catechism-class and institutional-Magisterium associations (historically “andare a dottrina” = attend catechism). |
| Reproof | ἔλεγχος / ἐλέγχω | elenchos / elenchō | rimprovero / confutazione | Medium | 3:16, 4:2 | Ensure error-exposing force is not softened to mere “critica.” |
| Correction | ἐπανόρθωσις | epanorthōsis | correzione | Low-Medium | 3:16 | NT rarity; low competing-sense risk. |
| Training/instruction | παιδεία | paideia | educazione / istruzione | Medium | 3:16 | Risk of over- or under-reading formative vs. punitive discipline nuance. |
| Man of God | ἄνθρωπος τοῦ θεοῦ | anthrōpos tou theou | uomo di Dio | Low | 3:17 | Fixed OT/NT title; retain grammatical-gender convention per baseline gender-language rule. |
| Complete/equipped | ἄρτιος / ἐξαρτίζω | artios / exartizō | completo / ben equipaggiato | Medium | 3:17 | Avoid “perfetto” (risks implying sinless moral perfection rather than task-adequacy). |
Doctrine: Guarding Sound Doctrine
| Term (English) | Greek | Transliteration | Italian rendering | Risk | Ref(s) | Risk reasoning |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rightly handling (the word of truth) | ὀρθοτομέω | orthotomeō | trattare/maneggiare rettamente | Critical | 2:15 | The single most doctrinally load-bearing verb for this doctrine; no Italian idiom fully captures the “cut straight” precision metaphor; generic “insegnare” loses essential nuance. Theologian review required at every occurrence. |
| Sound doctrine / sound words | ὑγιαίνουσα διδασκαλία / ὑγιαίνοντες λόγοι | hygiainousa didaskalia | sana dottrina | High | 1:13, 4:3 | Medical health-metaphor transfers well, but “dottrina” carries institutional-catechesis pull (see above). |
| Guard the (good) deposit | παραθήκη | parathēkē | il (buon) deposito | High | 1:12, 1:14 | Dominant modern Italian sense is banking/financial deposit; must always be qualified “il buon deposito,” never bare, and flagged for theologian review given doctrinal centrality. |
| Approved / disqualified | δόκιμος / ἀδόκιμος | dokimos / adokimos | approvato / che non ha superato la prova | Medium-High | 2:15, 3:8 | Avoid archaic loanword “reprobo” for ἀδόκιμος, which imports Reformed double-predestination (“reprobation”) freight not present in the plain sense. |
| Profane, empty babblings | βέβηλοι κενοφωνίαι | bebēloi kenophōniai | discorsi vuoti e profani | Low-Medium | 2:16 | Low competing-sense risk. |
| Gangrene (spreading teaching) | γάγγραινα | gangraina | cancrena | Low | 2:17 | Preserve graphic imagery; do not abstract. |
| Foundation | θεμέλιος | themelios | fondamento | Low-Medium | 2:19 | Stable. |
| Pattern of sound words | ὑποτύπωσις | hypotypōsis | modello (di sane parole) | Medium | 1:13 | Linked to “sana dottrina” risk profile. |
Doctrine: Faithful Transmission of the Gospel
| Term (English) | Greek | Transliteration | Italian rendering | Risk | Ref(s) | Risk reasoning |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Entrust | παρατίθεμαι | paratithemai | affida | High | 2:2 | Doctrinal proof-text for the entire multi-generational transmission-chain doctrine (Paul→Timothy→faithful men→others); ensure chain structure is clear in surrounding materials. |
| Witnesses | μάρτυρες | martyres | testimoni | Low | 2:2 | No false-cognate risk (contrast with μαρτύριον below). |
| Charge (solemn) | διαμαρτύρομαι | diamartyromai | ti scongiuro / do questo solenne incarico | Medium | 4:1, 2:14 | Preserve courtroom-witness solemnity; do not soften to casual request. |
| Testimony | μαρτύριον | martyrion | testimonianza | High | 1:8 | Never render as “martirio” (false cognate = martyrdom); would distort “do not be ashamed of the testimony” into “do not be ashamed of martyrdom.” |
| The gift of God (ministry empowerment) | χάρισμα (singular) | charisma | il dono di Dio (preferred) / il carisma | High | 1:6 | Modern Italian “carisma” overwhelmingly denotes secular personal magnetism (political/celebrity charisma); distinct from the baseline plural “carismi” (spiritual gifts) entry — do not conflate. |
| Laying on of hands | ἐπίθεσις τῶν χειρῶν | epithesis tōn cheirōn | imposizione delle mani | Low-Medium | 1:6 | Positive resonance with Catholic ordination-rite terminology; accurate parallel, not a distortion risk. |
Doctrine: The Charge to Preach the Word
| Term (English) | Greek | Transliteration | Italian rendering | Risk | Ref(s) | Risk reasoning |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Preach / proclaim | κηρύσσω | kēryssō | annuncia (preferred) / predica | High | 4:2 | ”Predicare” carries strong Italian Catholic clergy-only homiletical connotation, echoing baseline’s “vocazione” clergy-narrowing pattern; “annuncia” avoids inadvertent narrowing to ordained office alone. |
| The word (gospel message) | λόγος | logos | la Parola | Medium | 4:2 | Capitalize when referring to the gospel/Scripture as a whole. |
| In season, out of season | εὐκαίρως ἀκαίρως | eukairōs akairōs | a tempo opportuno e inopportuno | Low | 4:2 | Established Italian Bible idiom; reuse directly. |
| Patience / longsuffering | μακροθυμία | makrothymia | pazienza (preferred) / longanimità (literary) | Medium | 4:2 | ”Pazienza” fits newspaper-feature reading-level target; “longanimità” is the traditional theological register. |
| Evangelist (ministry role) | εὑαγγελιστής | euangelistēs | evangelista | High | 4:5 | Ordinary Italian usage and pervasive church-art iconography overwhelmingly identifies “gli evangelisti” as the four Gospel-writers (Matteo, Marco, Luca, Giovanni); requires disambiguating gloss to redirect to the NT ministry-role sense. |
| Ministry | διακονία | diakonia | ministero | Medium | 4:5 | Homonymic collision with civic/political “ministero” (government ministry); usually disambiguated by possessive context. |
| Herald / preacher (noun) | κῆρυξ | kēryx | predicatore / banditore | Medium | 1:11 | Shares clergy-register consideration with κηρύσσω. |
| Judge the living and the dead | κρίνειν ζῶντας καὶ νεκρούς | krinein zōntas kai nekrous | giudicare i vivi e i morti | Low | 4:1 | Positive reinforcing resonance with the Italian Catholic liturgical Credo. |
| Appearing / manifestation | ἐπιφάνεια | epiphaneia | apparizione / manifestazione | Critical | 1:10, 4:1, 4:8 | NEVER render as “epifania.” Collides catastrophically with “l’Epifania” (Jan. 6 national holiday, La Befana folklore), trivializing Christ’s return. Forbidden-substitution flag. |
Doctrine: Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days
| Term (English) | Greek | Transliteration | Italian rendering | Risk | Ref(s) | Risk reasoning |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Last days | ἔσχαται ἡμέραι | eschatai hēmerai | ultimi giorni | High | 3:1 | Contemporary Italian secular apocalyptic-media vocabulary risks sensationalizing an inaugurated-eschatology (present church-age) reality into remote future speculation. |
| Godliness / form of godliness | εὐσέβεια / μόρφωσις εὐσεβείας | eusebeia / morphōsis eusebeias | pietà / apparenza di pietà | High | 3:5, 3:12 | Italian “pietà” ambiguously means both “piety” and “pity/compassion,” and evokes Michelangelo’s famous sculpture “La Pietà” — strong competing cultural associations. |
| Deceiving / being deceived | πλανάω | planaō | sviare/ingannare | Medium | 3:13 | Preserve double-edged (active deception + self-deception) force. |
| Impostors / sorcerers | γόης | goēs | impostori | Low-Medium | 3:13 | NT hapax; low risk once rendered generically. |
| Disqualified concerning the faith | ἀδόκιμος περὶ τὴν πίστιν | adokimos peri tēn pistin | che non ha superato la prova riguardo alla fede | Medium-High | 3:8 | See “reprobo” note above (Guarding Sound Doctrine table). |
| Myths / fables | μῦθος | mythos | favole | Low | 4:4 | Stable; note it denotes invented religious speculation, not children’s fairy tales. |
| Resist the truth | ἀνθίστανται τῇ ἀληθεί | anthistantai tē alētheia | resistono alla verità | Low-Medium | 3:8 | Stable. |
| Truth | ἀλήθεια | alētheia | verità | Medium | 2:15, 2:18, 2:25, 3:7-8, 4:4 | Ensure objective/revealed-content sense, not subjective “my truth” drift. |
| Denial / faithlessness | ἀρνέομαι / ἀπιστέω | arneomai / apisteō | rinnegare / essere infedele | High | 2:12-13 | Delicate assurance-of-salvation nuance: God’s faithfulness grounded in His own character, not a universalist guarantee nor contradicted by 2:12’s warning. |
| Desertion (Demas) | ἐγκαταλείπω | egkataleipō | abbandonare | Medium | 4:10 | Weighty verb (echoes Christ’s cry of dereliction); biographical apostasy illustration. |
| This present age | νῦν αἰών | nyn aiōn | questo mondo / questa epoca presente | Medium | 4:10 | αἰών (time-bound epoch) vs. κόσμος (moral-spiritual system) distinction often flattened to “mondo” in Italian; flag for cross-document consistency. |
| Itching ears | κνήθω τὴν ἀκοήν | knēthō tēn akoēn | prurito di udire (cose nuove) | Low | 4:3 | Established CEI idiom; reuse directly. |
| Endure (sound doctrine) | ἀνέχομαι | anechomai | sopportare | Medium | 4:3 | Avoid “tollerare” (imports civic tolerance-debate connotations). |
| Own desires/passions | ἐπιθυμία | epithymia | passioni / desideri propri | Medium | 2:22, 3:6, 4:3 | Preserve self-serving, consumer-driven connotation. |
Doctrine: Perseverance under Suffering
| Term (English) | Greek | Transliteration | Italian rendering | Risk | Ref(s) | Risk reasoning |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Endure hardship/suffering | κακοπαθέω | kakopatheō | soffrire / sopportare le sofferenze | Medium | 1:8, 2:3, 2:9, 4:5 | Do not soften to generic “affrontare le difficoltà.” |
| Persecutions, sufferings | διωγμοί, παθήματα | diōgmoi, pathēmata | persecuzioni, sofferenze | Medium | 3:11 | Ties Paul’s biography to the universal-persecution doctrine at 3:12. |
| Endure / persevere | ὑπομένω | hypomenō | perseverare / resistere | Medium-High | 2:12 | Must not be read as making final salvation contingent on human effort in a merit-based sense; frame as reward-oriented, not salvation-conditioning. |
| Sober-minded | νήφω | nēphō | sii sobrio / sii vigilante | Medium | 4:5 | Risk of collapsing into either mere wakefulness or narrow alcohol-abstinence sense; recommend fuller phrase. |
| Be ashamed | ἐπαισχύνομαι | epaischynomai | vergognarsi | Medium | 1:8, 1:12, 1:16 | Preserve social/public-disgrace dimension, not mere private embarrassment. |
| Poured out (as a libation) | σπένδομαι | spendomai | sono versato in offerta | Medium | 4:6 | Preserve sacrificial-cultic metaphor for Paul’s impending death. |
| Fought the fight / finished the race | ἀγών, δρόμος | agōn, dromos | ho combattuto la buona battaglia, ho terminato la corsa | Low-Medium | 4:7 | Athletic/military metaphors; culturally universal, low collision risk. |
Doctrine: Assurance of Reward
| Term (English) | Greek | Transliteration | Italian rendering | Risk | Ref(s) | Risk reasoning |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crown of righteousness | στέφανος τῆς δικαιοσύνης | stephanos tēs dikaiosynēs | corona di giustizia | High | 4:8 | Italian “corona” is the standard word for the rosary (“dire la corona”), plus royal-crown/Advent-wreath associations — strong competing devotional collision requiring a contextual gloss anchoring the athletic-victor’s-wreath sense. |
| Reserved / laid up | ἀπόκειμαι | apokeimai | mi resta riservata | Low-Medium | 4:8 | Stable once paired with “corona” gloss above. |
| Reign with him | συμβασιλεύω | symbasileuō | regnare con lui | Medium-High | 2:12 | Same salvation-vs-reward distinction risk as ὑπομένω above; reward-for-perseverance language must not collapse into merit-based soteriology. |
| Deliverance (this-life rescue) | ῥύομαι | rhyomai | liberare | Low-Medium | 4:17-18 | Distinguish this-life rescue-from-danger sense from final salvation (σωτηρία) sense, though both converge eschatologically at 4:18. |
| Heavenly kingdom | βασιλεία ἐπουράνιος | basileia epouranios | Regno celeste | Medium | 4:18 | Reuse baseline “Regno di Dio” qualified “celeste.” |
| Love his appearing | ἀγαπάω τὴν ἐπιφάνειαν αὐτοῦ | agapaō tēn epiphaneian autou | amare la sua apparizione/manifestazione | Critical | 4:8 | Same ἐπιφάνεια “epifania” forbidden-substitution risk applies. |

Review routing recommendation (to be formalized in the doctrine risk registry update for 2 Timothy): all Critical and the majority of High risk terms above require human theologian review per the baseline’s escalation rules; Medium risk terms require native speaker review; Low risk terms may proceed with automated review, consistent with the baseline’s doctrine_risk_registry.json framework.
This glossary must be merged into an updated translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json in subsequent Phase 1 steps (Steps 2–8) before any Phase 2 segment translation of 2 Timothy content begins. All baseline Romans terms reused here must not be altered from their recorded baseline renderings.
Critical Risk Terms
Righteousness
Approved rendering: giustizia
Transliteration: giustizia (di Dio)
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: virtù
Original: δικαιοσύνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. In 2 Timothy this word appears in both the ethical/formative sense (2:22; 3:16 ‘training in righteousness’) and the reward-context sense (4:8 ‘crown of righteousness’); confirm which sense is active at each occurrence and that neither is confused with the forensic-justification sense central to Romans.
All Scripture
Approved rendering: tutta la Scrittura
Transliteration: tutta la Scrittura
Doctrine: Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture
Rejected alternatives: ogni Scrittura (over-distributive, risks atomistic proof-texting), la Scrittura in generale (too vague, dilutes comprehensive authority)
Original: πᾶσα γραφή
Category: Scripture
NEW. 3:16, πᾶσα γραφή. The distributive/collective ambiguity of πᾶσα must be preserved, supporting both totality and particularity; must not narrow to isolated proof-texting nor loosen to vague generality.
God Breathed
Approved rendering: ispirata da Dio
Transliteration: ispirata da Dio
Doctrine: Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture
Rejected alternatives: ispirata (bare, collapses into artistic inspiration)
Original: θεόπνευστος
Category: Scripture
NEW. 3:16, θεόπνευστος, NT hapax. Italian ‘ispirazione’ is extremely common in secular creative usage (‘un artista ispirato’); no lexical alternative exists in standard Italian, so mandatory catechetical/translator gloss is required at every occurrence distinguishing this from ordinary artistic inspiration. Forbidden to render as bare ‘ispirata’ without the ‘da Dio’ qualifier.
Rightly Handling The Word
Approved rendering: trattare / maneggiare rettamente (la parola della verità)
Transliteration: trattare rettamente
Doctrine: Guarding Sound Doctrine
Rejected alternatives: insegnare (generic, loses precision/distortion-avoidance metaphor)
Original: ὀρθοτομέω
Category: Ministry
NEW. 2:15, ὀρθοτομέω. No Italian idiom carries the ‘cut a straight line’ surveying/priestly-portion-cutting metaphor. Requires a mandatory translator’s note explaining the background image at every occurrence. Theologian review required despite the underlying Italian words carrying no competing secular meaning.
Appearing Manifestation
Approved rendering: apparizione / manifestazione
Transliteration: apparizione
Doctrine: The Appearing and Return of Christ
Rejected alternatives: epifania (FORBIDDEN — collides with the national holiday ‘l’Epifania’ / La Befana folklore, Jan. 6)
Original: ἐπιφάνεια
Category: Ministry
NEW. 1:10, 4:1, 4:8, ἐπιφάνεια. FORBIDDEN SUBSTITUTION: never render as ‘epifania’ at any occurrence. Use ‘apparizione’ or ‘manifestazione’ consistently; covers both Christ’s first-coming manifestation (1:10) and his future eschatological return (4:1, 4:8).
High Risk Terms
Grace
Approved rendering: grazia
Transliteration: grazia
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: favore
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in 2 Timothy’s salutation (1:2), the ministry-empowerment charge ‘fortificati nella grazia’ (2:1), and the closing benediction (4:22); the Catholic sacramental-grace vs. evangelical sola-gratia tension applies identically at each occurrence. Must render as wholly unmerited.
Calling
Approved rendering: chiamata
Transliteration: chiamata
Doctrine: Divine Calling and Election
Rejected alternatives: vocazione (clergy-narrowing risk)
Inherited from Romans package. 2 Timothy 1:9’s ‘holy calling’ (κλήσει ἁγίᳳ) must retain the baseline’s every-believer sense; ‘vocazione’ remains reserved only for explicitly priestly/religious-life contexts.
Lord
Approved rendering: Signore
Transliteration: Signore
Doctrine: Lordship and Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: padrone
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Recurs at nearly every chapter boundary of 2 Timothy’s salutations and benedictions (1:2, 1:8, 1:16, 2:7, 2:19, 2:22, 2:24, 4:1, 4:8, 4:14, 4:17, 4:18, 4:22); ‘Signore’ doubles as the everyday polite title ‘Mr./sir’.
Sin
Approved rendering: peccato
Transliteration: peccato
Doctrine: Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days
Original: ἁμαρτία
Category: Sin
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs at 3:6 (‘women loaded down with sins’); the baseline’s ‘che peccato!’ (what a shame) colloquial-drift risk applies identically here.
Election
Approved rendering: eletti
Transliteration: eletti
Doctrine: Divine Calling and Election
Original: ἐκλογή / ἐκλεκτός
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package ‘election’ risk profile, here in the adjectival form ἐκλεκτός (‘the elect’, 2:10, ‘for the sake of the elect’). ‘Gli eletti’ risks the everyday political-election reading identically to the baseline concern; Catholic (Thomistic, synergistic) vs. Reformed assumptions about election remain equally live.
Teaching Doctrine
Approved rendering: insegnamento / dottrina
Transliteration: insegnamento
Doctrine: Guarding Sound Doctrine
Original: διδασκαλία
Category: Scripture
NEW. 3:16, 4:2, 4:3, διδασκαλία. ‘Dottrina’ carries Italian catechism-class (‘andare a dottrina’) and Magisterial (‘Congregazione per la Dottrina della Fede’) associations. Prefer ‘insegnamento’ for the verbal/instructional sense; reserve ‘dottrina’ for the content-body sense with reviewer awareness of the institutional pull.
Sound Doctrine
Approved rendering: sana dottrina
Transliteration: sana dottrina
Doctrine: Guarding Sound Doctrine
Original: ὑγιαίνουσα διδασκαλία / ὑγιαίνοντες λόγοι
Category: Ministry
NEW. 1:13, 4:3, ὑγιαίνουσα διδασκαλία / ὑγιαίνοντες λόγοι. The medical health-metaphor transfers well (‘sano/sana’), but ‘dottrina’ still carries the institutional-catechesis pull; ensure the health-versus-disease contrast (cf. cancrena, 2:17) remains vivid, not merely ‘correct vs. incorrect institutional teaching’.
Guard The Deposit
Approved rendering: il buon deposito
Transliteration: il buon deposito
Doctrine: Faithful Transmission of the Gospel
Rejected alternatives: il deposito (bare, purely financial/transactional reading)
Original: παραθήκη
Category: Ministry
NEW. 1:12, 1:14, παραθήκη. Modern Italian ‘deposito’ is overwhelmingly a banking/financial or storage term; always qualify as ‘il buon deposito’, never bare, per established convention. Flag for theologian review given doctrinal centrality.
Entrust
Approved rendering: affida
Transliteration: affida
Doctrine: Faithful Transmission of the Gospel
Original: παρατίθεμαι
Category: Ministry
NEW. 2:2, παρατίθεμαι. Doctrinal proof-text for the multi-generational transmission chain (Paul→Timothy→faithful men→others); the single verb does not itself signal the chain structure — surrounding study material must make it explicit.
Testimony
Approved rendering: testimonianza
Transliteration: testimonianza
Doctrine: Faithful Transmission of the Gospel
Rejected alternatives: martirio (FALSE COGNATE — means martyrdom, not testimony)
Original: μαρτύριον
Category: Ministry
NEW. 1:8, μαρτύριον. FORBIDDEN SUBSTITUTION: never render as ‘martirio’; this would distort ‘do not be ashamed of the testimony’ into ‘do not be ashamed of martyrdom’. Always use ‘testimonianza’.
Gift Of God Ministry
Approved rendering: il dono di Dio
Transliteration: il dono di Dio
Doctrine: Ministry Gift and Ordination
Rejected alternatives: il carisma (collides with secular personal-magnetism sense)
Original: χάρισμα (singular)
Category: Ministry
NEW. 1:6, χάρισμα (singular). Modern Italian secular ‘carisma’ overwhelmingly denotes personal charismatic magnetism; distinct from baseline plural ‘carismi’. Use ‘il dono di Dio’ for this singular ministry-empowerment sense only.
Preach Proclaim
Approved rendering: annuncia la Parola
Transliteration: annuncia
Doctrine: The Charge to Preach the Word
Rejected alternatives: predica (clergy-only homiletical connotation, risks narrowing the charge to ordained office)
Original: κηρύσσω
Category: Ministry
NEW. 4:2, κηρύσσω. ‘Predicare’ carries a strong Italian Catholic clergy-only homiletical connotation, echoing the baseline’s ‘vocazione’ clergy-narrowing pattern. Default to ‘annuncia la Parola’; reserve ‘predicare’ for contexts explicitly about ordained preaching office.
Evangelist
Approved rendering: evangelista
Transliteration: evangelista
Doctrine: The Charge to Preach the Word
Original: εὑαγγελιστής
Category: Ministry
NEW. 4:5, εὑαγγελιστής. Ordinary Italian usage and pervasive church-art iconography (mosaics/frescoes of Matteo, Marco, Luca, Giovanni) overwhelmingly default ‘gli evangelisti’ to the four Gospel-writers. Requires a disambiguating gloss (‘il compito di annunciare il vangelo’) at every occurrence.
Last Days
Approved rendering: ultimi giorni
Transliteration: ultimi giorni
Doctrine: Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days
Original: ἔσχαται ἡμέραι
Category: Apostasy
NEW. 3:1, ἔσχαται ἡμέραι. Contemporary Italian secular apocalyptic-media vocabulary risks sensationalizing this into remote future speculation rather than Paul’s sober description of the entire present church age’s moral character. Pair with contextual framing (‘l’epoca presente, tra la prima e la seconda venuta di Cristo’).
Godliness Form Of
Approved rendering: pietà / apparenza di pietà
Transliteration: pietà
Doctrine: Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days
Original: εὐσέβεια / μόρφωσις εὐσεβείας
Category: Apostasy
NEW. 3:5, 3:12, εὐσέβεια / μόρφωσις εὐσεβείας. Italian ‘pietà’ competes with (1) colloquial ‘pity’ (‘che pietà!’) and (2) Michelangelo’s globally famous sculpture ‘La Pietà’. Never leave bare; pair with ‘verso Dio’ or use ‘religiosità/devozione autentica’ as a fencing companion phrase.
Denial Faithlessness
Approved rendering: rinnegare / essere infedele
Transliteration: rinnegare
Doctrine: Assurance Grounded in God’s Faithfulness
Original: ἀρνέομαι / ἀπιστέω
Category: Apostasy
NEW. 2:12-13, ἀρνέομαι / ἀπιστέω. ‘Se siamo infedeli, egli rimane fedele’ must be read as God’s faithfulness grounded in His own unchanging character, not a universalist guarantee voiding 2:12’s warning, nor feeding Catholic sacramental-standing anxiety.
Repentance
Approved rendering: ravvedimento
Transliteration: ravvedimento
Doctrine: Repentance and Restoration
Rejected alternatives: pentimento (pulls toward the Catholic sacrament of Confession/Reconciliation)
Original: μετάνοια
Category: Apostasy
NEW. 2:25, μετάνοια. Bare ‘pentimento’ risks an automatic sacramental-mediation association not intended in this pastoral, non-sacramental restoration-of-false-teachers context. ‘Ravvedimento’ better isolates the change-of-direction sense.
Endure Persevere
Approved rendering: perseverare / resistere
Transliteration: perseverare
Doctrine: Perseverance under Suffering
Original: ὑπομένω
Category: Perseverance
NEW. 2:12, ὑπομένω. Must not be read as making final salvation contingent on human perseverance in a merit-based sense; frame as reward-oriented, distinct from (not contradictory to) unconditional grace.
Crown Of Righteousness
Approved rendering: corona di giustizia
Transliteration: corona di giustizia
Doctrine: Assurance of Reward
Rejected alternatives: diadema (royal ruling crown, wrong sense)
Original: ὁ τῆς δικαιοσύνης στέφανος
Category: Eschatology
NEW. 4:8, ὁ τῆς δικαιοσύνης στέφανος. Italian ‘corona’ is the standard word for the rosary (‘dire la corona’, ‘la corona del rosario’), plus royal/Advent-wreath associations. Always pair with a contextual gloss anchoring the athletic victor’s-wreath reward image, never rosary devotion.
Reign With Him
Approved rendering: regnare con lui
Transliteration: regnare con lui
Doctrine: Assurance of Reward
Original: συμβασιλεύω
Category: Eschatology
NEW. 2:12, συμβασιλεύω. Same reward-vs-merit distinction risk as ὑπομένω: reward-for-perseverance language must not collapse into merit-based soteriology; explicitly cross-reference the baseline’s grace/imputed-righteousness Critical entries.
Immortality Incorruption
Approved rendering: incorruttibilità
Transliteration: incorruttibilità
Doctrine: Bodily Hope and Incorruption
Rejected alternatives: immortalità (bare, risks Platonic immortal-soul framework)
Original: ἀφθαρσία
Category: Eschatology
NEW. 1:10, ἀφθαρσία. ‘Immortalità’ alone risks importing a Platonic/philosophical immortal-soul framework reinforced by classical Greco-Roman heritage in Italian education, rather than the NT’s bodily, resurrection-grounded incorruption.
Purpose Predestination
Approved rendering: disegno / proposito
Transliteration: disegno
Doctrine: Divine Calling and Election
Original: πρόθεσις
Category: Salvation
NEW. 1:9, πρόθεσις. Be aware that Catholic (Thomistic, synergistic) and Reformed/evangelical (monergistic) assumptions about divine purpose differ; do not import either framework beyond what the text states.
Medium Risk Terms
Faith
Approved rendering: fede
Transliteration: fede
Doctrine: Faith
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package. At 4:7 (‘ho conservato la fede’) the sense shifts contextually toward maintained faithfulness/orthodoxy over a lifetime rather than initial trust; retain the same Italian word, but reviewers must be aware of this nuance shift and not read it as a merit condition.
Salvation
Approved rendering: salvezza
Transliteration: salvezza
Doctrine: Salvation
Original: σωτηρία
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package (3:15; 2:10). Must be distinguished from ῥύομαι’s this-life rescue-from-danger sense at 4:17-18, which converges with but is not identical to final salvation.
Called
Approved rendering: chiamato
Transliteration: chiamato
Doctrine: Divine Calling and Election
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs at 1:9 (‘who saved us and called us with a holy calling’); context is effectual calling to salvation, not a call to ordained office.
Holy
Approved rendering: santo
Transliteration: santo
Doctrine: Divine Calling and Election
Inherited from Romans package. Modifies ‘chiamata’ at 1:9 (‘a holy calling’); set apart for God, not ritual purity alone.
Sanctification
Approved rendering: santificazione / santificato
Transliteration: santificazione
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: ἁγιάζω
Category: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package. Applied at 2:20-21 to the vessel-for-honorable-use metaphor: ‘if anyone cleanses himself… he will be sanctified.‘
Resurrection
Approved rendering: risurrezione
Transliteration: risurrezione
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Original: ἀνάστασις
Category: Eschatology
Inherited from Romans package. At 2:8 correctly summarizes the gospel; at 2:18 appears embedded inside a heretical over-spiritualized claim (‘the resurrection has already happened’) — Italian sentence structure must clearly mark this as the false teachers’ erroneous assertion so the accurate doctrinal term is not inadvertently validated as true in that verse. Treat as elevated to High-risk handling in this specific curriculum context per doctrine_risk_registry.json.
Spiritual Gifts
Approved rendering: carismi
Transliteration: carismi
Doctrine: Ministry Gift and Ordination
Rejected alternatives: doni naturali
Original: χαρίσματα
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package, reserved strictly for the PLURAL spiritual-gifts sense. Must not be conflated with the distinct SINGULAR χάρισμα at 1:6, which uses ‘il dono di Dio’ instead (see gift_of_god_ministry below) to avoid the secular-charisma collision.
Kingdom Of God
Approved rendering: Regno di Dio
Transliteration: Regno di Dio
Doctrine: Assurance of Reward
Original: βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Kingdom
Inherited from Romans package. At 4:1 (‘his kingdom’) and 4:18 (‘heavenly kingdom’, qualified ‘celeste’) refers to Christ’s future consummated reign; capitalize ‘Regno’ per baseline convention.
Glory
Approved rendering: gloria
Transliteration: gloria
Doctrine: Assurance of Reward
Original: δόξα
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Closing doxology, 4:18 (‘to him be glory forever and ever’).
Power Of God
Approved rendering: potenza (di Dio)
Transliteration: potenza di Dio
Doctrine: Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days
Original: δύναμις (θεοῦ)
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs at 1:7 (‘spirit of power’) and 3:5 (‘denying its power’) — the diagnostic mark of false last-days religiosity: outward form without transformative power.
Messiah
Approved rendering: Messia
Transliteration: Messia
Doctrine: Lordship and Deity of Christ
Original: Χριστός
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Extended here to the frequent titular use of ‘Cristo’ throughout 2 Timothy (1:1-2, 2:8, 2:10, 4:1); when used as a bare title rather than part of the fixed name ‘Gesù Cristo’, reviewers should treat this occurrence with elevated (Critical-adjacent) care so it is not flattened into a generic honorific.
God
Approved rendering: Dio
Transliteration: Dio
Doctrine: Lordship and Deity of Christ
Original: θεός
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: Spirito Santo
Transliteration: Spirito Santo
Doctrine: Guarding Sound Doctrine
Original: Πνεῦμα Ἅγιον
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. 1:14: ‘guard the good deposit through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us.‘
Father
Approved rendering: Padre
Transliteration: Padre
Doctrine: Grace
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package (1:2).
Seed Of David
Approved rendering: discendente di Davide
Transliteration: discendente di Davide
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Rejected alternatives: stirpe di Davide (literary but acceptable)
Original: σπέρμα Δαυίδ
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package. 2:8 directly echoes Romans 1:3’s gospel formula; must match that rendering verbatim per cross-document consistency rule.
Reproof
Approved rendering: rimprovero / confutazione
Transliteration: rimprovero
Doctrine: Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture
Rejected alternatives: critica (too weak)
Original: ἔλεγχος / ἐλέγχω
Category: Scripture
NEW. 3:16, 4:2, ἔλεγχος/ἐλέγχω. Ensure the corrective, error-exposing force is not softened into mere ‘critica’.
Training In Righteousness
Approved rendering: educazione / istruzione
Transliteration: educazione
Doctrine: Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture
Original: παιδεία
Category: Scripture
NEW. 3:16, παιδεία. Risk of under-reading (mere information transfer) or over-reading (harsh punitive discipline); confirm formative framing while retaining the discipline nuance.
Complete Equipped
Approved rendering: completo / ben equipaggiato
Transliteration: completo
Doctrine: Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture
Rejected alternatives: perfetto (implies unattainable sinless moral perfection)
Original: ἄρτιος / ἐξαρτίζω
Category: Scripture
NEW. 3:17, ἄρτιος / ἐξαρτίζω. Never render as ‘perfetto’; use ‘completo’ or ‘idoneo’ to convey task-adequacy, not sinless perfection.
Spirit Of Self Discipline
Approved rendering: autocontrollo / assennatezza
Transliteration: autocontrollo
Doctrine: Ministry Gift and Ordination
Rejected alternatives: moderazione (too weak)
Original: σωφρονισμός
Category: Sanctification
NEW. 1:7, σωφρονισμός, NT hapax. Must not be flattened to weak ‘moderazione’; names an active, Spirit-given capacity for self-mastery.
The Word Message
Approved rendering: la Parola
Transliteration: la Parola
Doctrine: The Charge to Preach the Word
Original: λόγος
Category: Ministry
NEW. 4:2, λόγος. Capitalize as ‘la Parola’ when referring to the gospel/Scripture as a whole, distinct from lowercase ‘una parola’ (a single word).
Patience Longsuffering
Approved rendering: pazienza
Transliteration: pazienza
Doctrine: The Charge to Preach the Word
Rejected alternatives: longanimità (archaic/literary register, acceptable in liturgical materials)
Original: μακροθυμία
Category: Ministry
NEW. 4:2, μακροθυμία. ‘Pazienza’ fits the newspaper-feature reading-level target; ‘longanimità’ is the traditional theological register, retained as an acceptable alternative in more formal materials.
Ministry Service
Approved rendering: ministero
Transliteration: ministero
Doctrine: The Charge to Preach the Word
Original: διακονία
Category: Ministry
NEW. 4:5, διακονία. Homonymic collision with the ordinary civic/political sense (‘il Ministero degli Affari Esteri’); usually disambiguated by the possessive ‘il tuo ministero’ and context.
Herald Preacher Noun
Approved rendering: predicatore / banditore
Transliteration: predicatore
Doctrine: The Charge to Preach the Word
Original: κῆρυξ
Category: Ministry
NEW. 1:11, κῆρυξ, the noun form behind κηρύσσω. Shares the clergy-register consideration documented under ‘preach_proclaim’.
Judge Living And Dead
Approved rendering: giudicare i vivi e i morti
Transliteration: giudicare i vivi e i morti
Doctrine: Christ as Judge / Final Judgment
Original: κρίνειν ζῶντας καὶ νεκρούς
Category: Ministry
NEW. 4:1, κρίνειν ζῶντας καὶ νεκρούς. Positive reinforcing resonance: this exact phrase appears in the Italian Catholic liturgical Credo (‘di là verrà a giudicare i vivi e i morti’), recognizable across Catholic, Waldensian/evangelical, and secular-but-catechized readers alike.
Solemn Charge
Approved rendering: ti scongiuro / do questo solenne incarico
Transliteration: ti scongiuro
Doctrine: The Charge to Preach the Word
Rejected alternatives: ti chiedo di… (too casual)
Original: διαμαρτύρομαι
Category: Ministry
NEW. 4:1, διαμαρτύρομαι. Must preserve courtroom-witness solemnity, invoking God and Christ Jesus as witnesses; do not soften to a casual request.
Pattern Of Sound Words
Approved rendering: modello di sane parole
Transliteration: modello di sane parole
Doctrine: Guarding Sound Doctrine
Original: ὑποτύπωσις ὑγιαινόντων λόγων
Category: Ministry
NEW. 1:13, ὑποτύπωσις ὑγιαινόντων λόγων. Shares the risk profile of ‘sound_doctrine’ (ὑγιαίνω-family).
Deceiving Being Deceived
Approved rendering: sviare / ingannare
Transliteration: ingannare
Doctrine: Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days
Original: πλανάω
Category: Apostasy
NEW. 3:13, πλανάω. Preserve the double-edged force (both deceiving others and being self-deceived), central to the Apostasy doctrine.
Truth
Approved rendering: verità
Transliteration: verità
Doctrine: Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days
Original: ἀλήθεια
Category: Apostasy
NEW. 2:15, 2:18, 2:25, 3:7-8, 4:4, ἀλήθεια. Ensure ‘la verità’ reads as the objective, revealed content of the gospel, not a subjective ‘my truth’ sense increasingly common in contemporary Italian media discourse.
Desertion
Approved rendering: abbandonare
Transliteration: abbandonare
Doctrine: Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days
Original: ἐγκαταλείπω
Category: Apostasy
NEW. 4:10, ἐγκαταλείπω, the same weighty verb Christ uses on the cross. Applied biographically to Demas as an illustration of apostasy for love of the present age.
This Present Age
Approved rendering: questo mondo / questa epoca presente
Transliteration: questa epoca presente
Doctrine: Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days
Original: ὁ νῦν αἰών
Category: Apostasy
NEW. 4:10, ὁ νῦν αἰών. αἰών (time-bound epoch) vs. κόσμος (moral-spiritual system) often both flatten to Italian ‘mondo’; flag for cross-document consistency if a later curriculum unit distinguishes the two.
Endure Tolerate
Approved rendering: sopportare
Transliteration: sopportare
Doctrine: Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days
Rejected alternatives: tollerare (imports civic/political tolerance-ideology connotations)
Original: ἀνέχομαι
Category: Apostasy
NEW. 4:3, ἀνέχομαι. Avoid ‘tollerare’, which would shift register from personal spiritual endurance to a public-policy concept.
Own Desires Passions
Approved rendering: passioni / desideri propri
Transliteration: passioni proprie
Doctrine: Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days
Original: ἐπιθυμία
Category: Apostasy
NEW. 2:22, 3:6, 4:3, ἐπιθυμία. Ensure the self-serving, consumer-driven connotation (hearers ‘shopping’ for teachers who tell them what they want to hear) is clear in context.
Lovers Of Pleasure Rather Than God
Approved rendering: amanti dei piaceri più che di Dio
Transliteration: amanti dei piaceri più che di Dio
Doctrine: Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days
Rejected alternatives: autoindulgenti (too generic)
Original: φιλήδονος μᾶλλον ἢ φιλόθεος

Endure Hardship
Approved rendering: soffrire / sopportare le sofferenze
Transliteration: sopportare le sofferenze
Doctrine: Perseverance under Suffering
Rejected alternatives: affrontare le difficoltà (too generic, loses intensity)
Original: κακοπαθέω
Category: Perseverance
NEW. 1:8, 2:3, 2:9, 4:5, κακοπαθέω. Do not soften into generic ‘affrontare le difficoltà’; retain qualifiers like ‘soffrire per il vangelo’ to preserve the sense of voluntarily accepted hardship for the gospel’s sake.
Persecutions Sufferings
Approved rendering: persecuzioni, sofferenze
Transliteration: persecuzioni
Doctrine: Perseverance under Suffering
Original: διωγμοί, παθήματα

Sober Minded

Rejected alternatives: sii vigilante (bare, loses sobriety/clear-mindedness nuance), sii sobrio (bare, may default to narrow alcohol-abstinence sense)

Doctrine: Perseverance under Suffering
Original: ἐπαισχύνομαι
Category: Perseverance
NEW. 1:8, 1:12, 1:16, ἐπαισχύνομαι. Preserve the social/public-disgrace dimension, not mere private embarrassment; the antonym-action of bold gospel confession.

Rejected alternatives: le sacre Scritture (collapses with γραφή, obscuring Paul’s distinction)
Original: ἱερὰ γράμματα
Category: Scripture
NEW. 3:15, ἱερὰ γράμματα. Italian tradition typically collapses this and γραφή into the same phrase; preserve the lexical distinction (‘i sacri scritti’ v.15 vs. ‘tutta la Scrittura’ v.16) to retain Paul’s rhetorical escalation.
Approved Disqualified

Rejected alternatives: reprobo (imports Reformed double-predestination ‘reprobation’ freight)
Original: δόκιμος / ἀδόκιμος
Category: Ministry
