Core Glossary

Core Glossary — Philemon (English–Italian)

This glossary consolidates every load-bearing term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md. Terms already fixed in the Romans translation_memory.json are marked [Reused from Romans TM] and reproduced with their exact baseline rendering; they must not be altered. All other terms are new to this curriculum and are proposed here for addition to translation memory (Phase 1 Step 9). Doctrine tags map to this curriculum’s five core doctrines:

  • FR = Forgiveness and Reconciliation
  • CB = Christian Brotherhood across Social Status
  • SG = Slavery and the Gospel’s Transforming Power
  • IA = Intercession and Appeal on Behalf of Another
  • GO = Grace-Motivated Obedience

Part A — Reused Baseline Terms (Romans TM — apply exactly, no changes)

Part B — New Philemon Terms (proposed for translation memory)

EnglishGreek / TransliterationLiteral MeaningItalian RenderingRiskDoctrine(s)Alternatives RejectedNotes
Prisoner (of Christ)δέσμιος / desmiosone bound, a prisonerprigioniero (di Cristo Gesù)MediumIA, GO”detenuto” (too bureaucratic/secular)vv.1, 9, 10. Must retain “di Cristo Gesù” qualifier so the identity is theological, not merely civil.

Brother / Sisterἀδελφός / ἀδελφή / adelphos / adelphesibling; fellow believerfratello / sorellaMediumCBvv.1, 2, 7, 16, 20. Climactic doctrinal use at v.16 extends kinship language across the master-slave boundary; ensure consistent rendering across all occurrences to preserve the letter’s kinship arc.
Fellow soldierσυστρατιώτης / systratiotescomrade-in-armscompagno d’armiLowIAv.2. Metaphorical; no literal-military misreading risk in Italian.
Prayerπροσευχή / proseucheaddress to GodpreghieraLow-MediumIAvv.4, 22. Do not conflate with baseline’s High-risk heavenly-intercession term; this is ordinary petitionary prayer for another person.
Appeal / beseech (Philemon’s core rhetorical verb)παρακαλῶ / parakalōI call alongside, entreatfaccio appello a / supplicoHighIA, GOesortare (baseline’s general rendering — rejected here as too directive)vv.9, 10. Central to the letter’s appeal-not-command strategy; must be distinguished from the baseline’s “esortare” default. Flag for theologian review.

Child (spiritual)τέκνον / teknonchildfiglioMediumSG, FRv.10. Watch for mild adjacency to Catholic “figlio spirituale” priestly-address idiom; not harmful but worth translator awareness.
Beget (spiritually)γεννάω / gennaoto father, give birth togenerareMediumSG, FRv.10. Consider amplification (“dare vita spirituale a”) if register allows.
Onesimus (proper name + wordplay)Ὀνήσιμος / Onesimos”useful, profitable”OnesimoLow (name) / High (footnote requirement)SGvv.10, 11, 20. Untranslatable pun across three verses; requires one cross-referenced translator’s note introduced at first occurrence.

Separated (euphemistic)χωρίζω (ἐχωρίσθη) / chorizowas parted fromsi è allontanato / è stato separatoMediumFRè scappato / è fuggito (rejected — too blunt/accusatory, loses Paul’s diplomatic providential framing)v.15. Possible “divine passive” implying God’s hidden providence.
Eternal / foreverαἰώνιος / aionioseverlastingper sempreLow-MediumFR, CBv.15. Contrasted with πρὸς ὥραν (“for a while”).
Slave / bondservantδοῦλος / douloslegally owned personschiavoCritical/HighSG, CBservo (rejected — softens/erases the real legal-social status Paul is addressing; risks blunting the doctrine’s central claim)v.16. Do not soften. Italy’s active contemporary anti-trafficking discourse (“le nuove schiavitù”) can sharpen resonance but also risks anachronistic projection onto the ancient Greco-Roman household-slave institution; requires contextual note and theologian review.
Flesh (social/relational sense)σάρξ / sarxphysical/material spherecarneMediumCB, SGv.16. Neutral relational sense here, not the morally pejorative “sinful flesh” sense found elsewhere in Paul; flag to avoid misreading.
Partner / sharerκοινωνός / koinonosone who shares fullysocio / compagno a pieno titoloHighCB, SGsocio (bare, risks purely commercial reading if unqualified)v.17. Distinct from κοινωνία (“comunione fraterna,” already fixed); request for full equal standing.
Receive / welcomeπροσλαμβάνομαι / proslambanomaito take to oneself, welcome fullyaccogliereMediumCB, FRv.17. Note potential future cross-curriculum consistency with Romans 14:1/15:7 (not currently in Romans TM).
Wrong (verb)ἀδικέω / adikeoto do injustice tofare un torto (a)MediumFRv.18. Shares δικ- root family with Critical-risk “giustizia”/“giustificazione”; note for teaching purposes only.
Owe / be indebtedὀφείλω / opheiloto oweessere debitore / dovereMediumFRv.18, v.19. Commercial-debt register must be preserved.
Charge to accountἐλλογάω / ellogaoto enter as a debit, credit to an accountmettere in conto a me / addebitare a meHighFRincolpare me (rejected — loses the specific ledger/accounting sense)v.18. Rich didactic parallel to the baseline’s Critical “giustizia imputata” (imputed righteousness) — Philemon offers a concrete narrative enactment of imputation logic. Flag for theologian review given teaching value.
Written with my own handἔγραψα τῇ ἐμῇ χειρί / egrapsa te eme cheiripersonally autographedho scritto (questo) di mia manoLowFRv.19. Cultural note: functions like a modern personal signature/guarantee.

Owe besidesπροσοφείλω / prosopheiloto owe in additionsei ulteriormente debitore verso di meMediumFR, GOv.19. Preserve the gentle rhetorical irony (Philemon’s own greater debt to Paul).
May I benefit (wordplay)ὀναίμην / onaimenmay I have profit/joypossa io avere da te questo beneficioMediumSG, IAv.20. Third and climactic Onesimus-name pun; cross-reference the v.10 footnote.
Refresh / give restἀναπαύω / anapauoto refresh, give restristorare / dare riposoHighCB, IAvv.7, 20 — inclusio; must use identical verb at both occurrences.
Confident / trustingπείθω (πεποιθώς) / pepoithospersuaded, confidentconfidandoLowGOv.21.
Obedience (Philemon’s general sense)ὑπακοή / hypakoecompliance, submissionla tua obbedienzaHighGOobbedienza della fede (baseline’s fixed Romans compound phrase — rejected here as a misapplication)v.21. Must be anchored back to v.14’s ἑκούσιον so it reads as free, love-motivated response, not coerced compliance or Tridentine merit-framed obedience. Flag for theologian review.
Hospitality / guest roomξενία / xeniaguest-lodgingalloggio / ospitalitàMediumIAv.22. Ancient guest-friendship convention; Italian hospitality tradition aids intelligibility.
Grant / give as a gift (grace-root verb)χαρίζομαι / charizomaito give freely as a favor; also NT “forgive”mi sarà concesso / donatoMedium-HighFR, GOv.22. Same root as χάρις (grazia); flag the etymological connection for teaching purposes even though a plain functional rendering suffices here.
Fellow prisoner (of war)συναιχμάλωτος / synaichmalotosfellow captivecompagno di prigioniaLow-MediumIAprigioniero di guerra (rejected — anachronistically specific POW/military-legal category)v.23. Distinct, more intense term than δέσμιος (v.1); keep renderings distinguishable.
Greetἀσπάζομαι / aspazomaito salutesalutareLowv.23. Standard epistolary convention.
Spirit (human, lower-case)πνεῦμα / pneuma (human referent)human spirit(il vostro) spiritoMediumSpirito (rejected — would misread as Holy Spirit)v.25. Must be lower-case and plural (“vostro”/voi), closing the letter’s tu/voi arc.

Full-Book Coverage Statement

This glossary consolidates load-bearing terms from every verse of Philemon’s single chapter (vv.1–25), cross-referenced to 07_semantic_analysis.md. No verse has been silently omitted; vv.24 introduces no new terms beyond the already-tabled συνεργός (v.1) and is noted here explicitly as reviewed with no new vocabulary.

Critical Risk Terms

Christ

Approved rendering: Cristo
Transliteration: Christos
Doctrine: Christology (Sonship and Deity of Christ)
Original: Χριστός
Category: Christology

New entry for the Philemon package (not previously separately keyed in the Romans TM, though used there in compounds). Occurs in the recurring phrase ‘Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ’ / ‘ἐν Χριστῷ’ throughout the letter’s frame (1:1, 1:8, 1:20, 1:23, 1:25). Established Italian Bible-translation form; no competing-rendering risk in Italian, but Critical because it names Christ’s unique person and must never be rendered as a generic honorific or title.

Slave

Approved rendering: schiavo
Transliteration: doulos
Doctrine: Slavery and the Gospel’s Transforming Power
Rejected alternatives: servo (softens/erases the real legal-social status Paul is addressing; risks blunting the doctrine’s central claim)
Original: δοῦλος
Category: Social Order

CRITICAL, THE SINGLE HIGHEST-STAKES LEXICAL CHOICE IN THE LETTER: Filemone 1:16. Must render plainly as ‘schiavo,’ never the devotionally normalized ‘servo’ (used elsewhere for Paul’s own self-designation, ‘servo di Cristo’). Italy’s active anti-trafficking discourse (‘le nuove schiavitù’) can sharpen resonance but also risks anachronistic projection of modern chattel-trafficking imagery onto the ancient Greco-Roman household-slave institution. Requires an explanatory historical note and mandatory human theologian review.

High Risk Terms

Grace

Approved rendering: grazia
Transliteration: grazia
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: favore
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation

Inherited from Romans package. Occurs at Filemone 1:3 (salutation) and 1:25 (benediction), and underlies the root-cognate verb χαρίζομαι at 1:22 (see grant_forgive below). Must consistently convey unmerited favor, never a reward for Philemon’s or Onesimus’s good conduct — the same Catholic sacramental-grace vs. Waldensian/evangelical sola-gratia tension documented in the Romans baseline recurs here.

Church

Approved rendering: chiesa
Transliteration: chiesa
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Original: ἐκκλησία
Category: Church

Inherited from Romans package. Filemone 1:2, κατ’ οἶκόν σου ἐκκλησία (‘the church in your house’) REQUIRES the qualifying clause ‘che si raduna nella tua casa’ — bare ‘la Chiesa’ defaults to the institutional Catholic Church physically headquartered in Italy, arguably even more urgently here than in Romans since this ekklesia is explicitly a small house-gathering. This qualifier also signals that Onesimus’s reception (vv.16-17) will be a public act witnessed by the whole gathered congregation, not a private household matter.

Saints

Approved rendering: santi
Transliteration: santi
Doctrine: Sainthood
Original: ἅγιοι
Category: Church

Inherited from Romans package. Occurs at Filemone 1:5 and 1:7; per the baseline’s forbidden-substitution guidance, must be glossed ‘tutti i credenti’ to prevent the canonized-intercessor reading dominant in Italian saint-veneration culture. Usage here is entirely corporate (Philemon’s household-church).

Fellowship

Approved rendering: comunione fraterna
Transliteration: comunione fraterna
Doctrine: Christian Fellowship
Rejected alternatives: comunione (bare)
Original: κοινωνία
Category: Church

Inherited from Romans package. Filemone 1:6, ‘la comunione della tua fede.’ Never render bare ‘comunione,’ which defaults to the Eucharist/First Communion in Italian. Distinct from the related but separate noun κοινωνός (‘partner,’ 1:17 — see partner_sharer entry below); the two must not be conflated in Italian even though they share a Greek root.

Lord

Approved rendering: Signore
Transliteration: Signore
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: padrone
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology

Inherited from Romans package. Occurs at Filemone 1:3, 1:16 (‘ἐν κυρίῳ’ — the spiritual register grounding Onesimus’s new brotherhood with Philemon), 1:20, and 1:25. Especially acute at 1:16, the doctrinal fulcrum of Christian Brotherhood across Social Status: a flattened ‘Mr./sir’ reading would sever the doctrine’s ground from its Christological anchor.

Obedience Of Faith

Approved rendering: obbedienza della fede
Transliteration: obbedienza della fede
Doctrine: Obedience of Faith
Original: ὑπακοὴ πίστεως
Category: Faith

Inherited from Romans package as the FIXED Romans-specific compound phrase (Romans 1:5, 16:26). This phrase does NOT occur in Filemone and must NOT be substituted for the letter’s own, simpler ‘ὑπακοή’ at 1:21 — see the new ‘obedience’ entry below. Doing so would misapply Romans-specific forensic theology to Philemon’s relational, person-to-person appeal.

Brother

Approved rendering: fratello / sorella
Transliteration: adelphos / adelphe
Doctrine: Christian Brotherhood across Social Status
Rejected alternatives: confratello, sorella nella fede
Original: ἀδελφός / ἀδελφή
Category: Church

HIGH RISK: carries the letter’s central kinship arc, culminating at 1:16 where it extends family language across the master-slave social boundary — the doctrinal heart of Christian Brotherhood across Social Status. Must be rendered with the IDENTICAL Italian word at every occurrence (1:1, 1:2, 1:7, 1:16, 1:20); the risk is consistency failure, not a competing rendering. Any drift to a near-synonym silently erases the letter’s rhetorical build-up.

Appeal

Approved rendering: faccio appello a / supplico
Transliteration: parakalo
Doctrine: Intercession and Appeal on Behalf of Another; Grace-Motivated Obedience
Rejected alternatives: esortare (baseline’s general rendering — too directive for this letter’s deliberately non-commanding strategy)
Original: παρακαλῶ
Category: Ministry

HIGH RISK: Filemone 1:9-10. Context-specific OVERRIDE of the baseline’s fixed ‘esortare’ rendering for the παρακαλέω family, recorded as a sub-entry alongside — not a contradiction of — the inherited ‘exhort’ entry above. This is the letter’s doctrinal hinge: Paul trades ἐπιτάσσειν (command, v.8) for παρακαλῶ (appeal) so that Philemon’s response is freely given, not extracted by rank. Flag for human theologian review.

Heart Affections

Approved rendering: cuore
Transliteration: splanchna
Doctrine: Christian Brotherhood across Social Status; Intercession and Appeal on Behalf of Another
Rejected alternatives: viscere (too clinical/anatomical in modern Italian)
Original: σπλάγχνα
Category: Faith

HIGH RISK: occurs three times (1:7, 1:12, 1:20), forming a deliberate literary inclusio around the whole appeal. The SAME Italian word (‘cuore’) must be used at ALL THREE occurrences or the letter’s central rhetorical structure is lost. Dynamic-equivalence loss (visceral intensity) is unavoidable and must be compensated by strict consistency.

Onesimus Name Wordplay

Approved rendering: Onesimo / inutile / utile / possa io avere da te questo beneficio
Transliteration: Onesimos / achrestos / euchrestos / onaimen
Doctrine: Slavery and the Gospel’s Transforming Power
Original: Ὀνήσιμος / ἄχρηστος / εὔχρηστος / ὀναίμην
Category: Salvation

HIGH RISK, FOOTNOTE MANDATORY: triple wordplay on ‘Onesimus’ (‘useful’) across 1:10 (name), 1:11 (ἄχρηστος/εὔχρηστος, ‘useless’/‘useful’), and 1:20 (ὀναίμην, ‘may I benefit’). Entirely invisible in Italian without one explanatory translator’s footnote, introduced at first occurrence (1:10) and cross-referenced at 1:11 and 1:20. Omitting the note erases the letter’s central illustration of the gospel’s transforming power.

Voluntary

Approved rendering: volontario / di libera scelta
Transliteration: hekousion
Doctrine: Grace-Motivated Obedience
Original: ἑκούσιον
Category: Obedience

HIGH RISK: Filemone 1:14. Carries the full doctrinal weight of Grace-Motivated Obedience, mirroring grace itself (unmerited, freely received, not coerced compliance). Sits on the same Trent-vs-Reformation fault line already Critical for ‘giustificazione’ in the Romans baseline. Must be linked to ‘obedience’ (1:21) as a paired flag for human theologian review — missing either half breaks the doctrine.

Partner Sharer

Approved rendering: socio / compagno a pieno titolo
Transliteration: koinonos
Doctrine: Christian Brotherhood across Social Status; Christian Fellowship
Rejected alternatives: socio (bare, risks a purely commercial reading if unqualified)
Original: κοινωνός
Category: Church

HIGH RISK: Filemone 1:17. ‘Socio’ defaults to a commercial business partner in ordinary Italian (‘socio d’affari’); the qualifier ‘a pieno titolo’ (full standing) is required so the request reads as equal familial/spiritual standing, not a transactional arrangement. Distinct from the already-fixed ‘comunione fraterna’ (κοινωνία, 1:6) — do not conflate the two Greek root-cognates.

Charge To Account

Approved rendering: mettere in conto a me / addebitare a me
Transliteration: ellogao
Doctrine: Forgiveness and Reconciliation; Substitutionary Imputation Picture
Rejected alternatives: incolpare me (loses the specific ledger/accounting sense)
Original: ἐλλογάω
Category: Forgiveness

HIGH RISK: Filemone 1:18. A rare, technical accounting-ledger term. Must preserve the specific ‘charge/credit to my account’ sense, not flatten to vague blame. Vivid first-century enactment of the same imputation logic underlying the Romans baseline’s Critical ‘giustizia imputata’ (Romans 4:3) — a strong didactic bridge across curricula. Flag for theologian review given teaching value and conceptual proximity to a Critical-risk doctrine.

Refresh Give Rest

Approved rendering: ristorare / dare riposo
Transliteration: anapauo
Doctrine: Christian Fellowship; Intercession and Appeal on Behalf of Another
Original: ἀναπαύω
Category: Church

HIGH RISK: occurs at Filemone 1:7 and 1:20 as a deliberate verbal echo (inclusio). The SAME Italian verb must be used at BOTH occurrences or the letter’s main rhetorical structuring device is lost entirely. Flag explicitly for translation quality control.

Obedience

Approved rendering: la tua obbedienza
Transliteration: hypakoe
Doctrine: Grace-Motivated Obedience
Rejected alternatives: obbedienza della fede (the baseline’s fixed Romans compound phrase — rejected here as a misapplication)
Original: ὑπακοή
Category: Obedience

HIGH RISK: Filemone 1:21. This is the letter’s summary statement of Grace-Motivated Obedience. Two risks converge: (1) mechanically reusing the inherited ‘obbedienza della fede’ phrase would misapply Romans-specific technical theology; (2) rendering ‘obbedienza’ without anchoring back to 1:14’s ‘voluntary’ risks a Catholic-catechetical hearer processing it as rule-compliance rather than love’s free response. Flag for human theologian review, linked to the ‘voluntary’ entry above.

You Singular Plural Tracking

Approved rendering: tu / voi (context-dependent, resolved per verse)
Transliteration: soi/sou (singular) vs. hymin/hymon (plural)
Doctrine: Structural/Grammatical — affects Grace-Motivated Obedience and Christian Brotherhood across Social Status

Structural, non-lexical risk, not a single Greek term. Greek marks singular ‘you’ (Philemon personally, vv.4-21) vs. plural ‘you’ (the whole household-church, vv.1-3 mixed, 3 plural, 22-25 plural) — English collapses this distinction but Italian MUST resolve it explicitly as tu vs. voi. Misresolution can misattribute Paul’s personal appeal/obedience-request to the whole church, or vice versa, subtly altering the doctrinal force of both Grace-Motivated Obedience and Christian Brotherhood. Track verse-by-verse; do not default to one form throughout.

Medium Risk Terms

Faith

Approved rendering: fede
Transliteration: fede
Doctrine: Faith
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith

Inherited from Romans package. Filemone 1:5-6, paired with ἀγάπη (love) as the twin marks of Philemon’s reputation; a more relational/character-reference usage than Romans’s forensic uses.

God

Approved rendering: Dio
Transliteration: Dio
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Original: θεός
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package. Filemone 1:3-4, ‘Dio nostro Padre.‘

Father

Approved rendering: Padre
Transliteration: Padre
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Original: πατήρ
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package. Filemone 1:3, ‘Dio nostro Padre.’ Context (paired with ‘Dio’) disambiguates clearly from the standard Italian clerical address ‘Padre’ for a priest.

Prisoner Of Christ

Approved rendering: prigioniero (di Cristo Gesù)
Transliteration: desmios (Christou Iesou)
Doctrine: Apostolic Suffering and Ministry for the Gospel
Rejected alternatives: detenuto
Original: δέσμιος (Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ)
Category: Ministry

Filemone 1:1, 1:9, 1:10. ‘Prigioniero’ alone reads as mere civil/legal detainee status in Italian; the qualifier ‘di Cristo Gesù’ is REQUIRED so readers hear a chosen theological identity — Paul’s self-designation as Christ’s captive rather than his usual ‘apostolo’ — setting the letter’s appeal-not-command tone. Must remain distinct from the more intense ‘compagno di prigionia’ at 1:23 (see fellow_prisoner).

Command

Approved rendering: comandare / ordinare
Transliteration: epitasso
Doctrine: Grace-Motivated Obedience
Original: ἐπιτάσσω
Category: Ministry

Filemone 1:8. The road-not-taken: Paul names his authority to command precisely in order to set it aside. Must clearly read as the REJECTED alternative to ‘appeal,’ never as what Paul actually does.

Boldness Of Speech

Approved rendering: franchezza
Transliteration: parrhesia
Doctrine: Intercession and Appeal on Behalf of Another
Rejected alternatives: libertà di parola
Original: παρρησία
Category: Ministry

Filemone 1:8. ‘Franchezza’ is intelligible but weaker than the Greek civic-boldness register; ensure the sense of earned standing to speak directly survives.

Spiritual Child

Approved rendering: figlio
Transliteration: teknon
Doctrine: Slavery and the Gospel’s Transforming Power
Original: τέκνον
Category: Salvation

Filemone 1:10. Paul claims Onesimus as his spiritual son through conversion. ‘Figlio mio’ risks reading as mere affectionate address rather than the specific claim of spiritual paternity; note mild adjacency to Catholic clerical ‘figlio spirituale’ address idiom (not doctrinally harmful, but worth translator awareness).

Beget Spiritually

Approved rendering: generare
Transliteration: gennao
Doctrine: Slavery and the Gospel’s Transforming Power
Original: γεννάω
Category: Salvation

Filemone 1:10. ‘Generare’ leans toward biological/production registers in ordinary Italian; consider amplification (‘ho dato alla luce nella fede’) where register/space allows, to strengthen the spiritual-paternity claim.

Serve Minister

Approved rendering: servire / assistere
Transliteration: diakoneo
Doctrine: Slavery and the Gospel’s Transforming Power; Intercession and Appeal on Behalf of Another
Rejected alternatives: compiere il diaconato (wrongly imports the formal ordained office)
Original: διακονέω
Category: Ministry

Filemone 1:13. Onesimus’s practical service to Paul in prison, standing in for Philemon. Avoid any rendering suggesting the Catholic Church’s formal ordained ‘diaconato’ office, not in view in this domestic-service context.

Approved rendering: consenso / parere
Transliteration: gnome
Doctrine: Grace-Motivated Obedience
Original: γνώμη
Category: Obedience

Filemone 1:14. Must not sound like grudging permission-seeking; Paul genuinely wants Philemon’s free agreement, not a formal sign-off.

Compulsion

Approved rendering: costrizione / necessità
Transliteration: ananke
Doctrine: Grace-Motivated Obedience
Original: ἀνάγκη
Category: Obedience

Filemone 1:14. Sets up the crucial contrast with ‘voluntary’; must clearly read as the alternative Paul refuses to invoke.

Separated Providentially

Approved rendering: si è allontanato / è stato separato
Transliteration: echoristhe
Doctrine: Forgiveness and Reconciliation; Providence
Rejected alternatives: è scappato / è fuggito (too blunt/accusatory, loses Paul’s diplomatic providential framing)
Original: χωρίζω (ἐχωρίσθη)
Category: Providence

Filemone 1:15. Likely a ‘divine passive’ implying God’s hidden providence in Onesimus’s flight. An active, blame-forward Italian verb would flatten Paul’s careful diplomatic rhetoric; the passive construction must be preserved.

Flesh Social

Approved rendering: carne
Transliteration: sarx
Doctrine: Christian Brotherhood across Social Status; Slavery and the Gospel’s Transforming Power
Original: σάρξ
Category: Social Order

Filemone 1:16. Neutral social/relational sense (‘in the flesh,’ household ties), NOT the morally pejorative ‘sinful flesh’ sense found elsewhere in Paul; flag so translators do not misread this occurrence negatively.

Receive Welcome

Approved rendering: accogliere
Transliteration: proslambanomai
Doctrine: Christian Brotherhood across Social Status; Forgiveness and Reconciliation
Original: προσλαμβάνομαι
Category: Church

Filemone 1:17. ‘Accogliere’ is a strong, safe verb conveying full reception into one’s own circle, not mere tolerance. Note potential future cross-curriculum consistency with Romans 14:1/15:7 if that curriculum is developed.

Wrong Verb

Approved rendering: fare un torto (a)
Transliteration: adikeo
Doctrine: Forgiveness and Reconciliation
Original: ἀδικέω
Category: Forgiveness

Filemone 1:18. Likely refers to theft and/or economic loss from Onesimus’s flight. Shares the δικ- root family with the Critical baseline terms ‘giustizia’/‘giustificazione,’ used here in its ordinary, non-technical sense; note for teaching purposes only.

Owe Debt

Approved rendering: essere debitore / dovere
Transliteration: opheilo / prosopheilo
Doctrine: Forgiveness and Reconciliation
Original: ὀφείλω / προσοφείλω
Category: Forgiveness

Filemone 1:18-19. Must preserve the commercial-debt register Paul deliberately invokes, including the gentle rhetorical irony of 1:19 (Philemon’s own conversion-debt to Paul far exceeding Onesimus’s debt).

Hospitality

Approved rendering: alloggio / ospitalità
Transliteration: xenia
Doctrine: Hospitality and Christian Partnership
Original: ξενία
Category: Ministry

Filemone 1:22. The ancient guest-friendship (xenia) convention is not identical to modern Italian hospitality norms, though Italy’s own strong ‘ospitalità’ tradition provides reasonable intelligibility with a light contextual note.

Human Spirit

Approved rendering: (il vostro) spirito
Transliteration: pneuma (human referent)
Doctrine: Closing Benediction (structural; not a core doctrine)
Rejected alternatives: Spirito (would misread as the Holy Spirit)
Original: πνεῦμα (human referent)
Category: God

Filemone 1:25. Must NOT be capitalized as ‘Spirito’; plural ‘vostro’ (voi) restores whole-congregation address, closing the letter’s tu/voi arc that opened at 1:1-3.

Old Man Elder

Approved rendering: un vecchio
Transliteration: presbytes
Doctrine: Intercession and Appeal on Behalf of Another
Rejected alternatives: anziano (risks confusion with the distinct NT church-office term ‘elder’, presbyteros)
Original: πρεσβύτης
Category: Ministry

Filemone 1:9. Paul foregrounds his own age/vulnerability rather than his authority, part of the appeal-not-command strategy.

Low Risk Terms

Gospel

Approved rendering: vangelo
Transliteration: vangelo
Doctrine: Gospel
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Salvation

Inherited from Romans package (translation, transliteration, risk, doctrine, alternatives copied exactly). Filemone 1:13, ‘le catene per il vangelo’ — Paul’s imprisonment framed as service to gospel proclamation. No new risk introduced by Philemon’s context.

Thanksgiving

Approved rendering: ringraziamento (rendo grazie)
Transliteration: ringraziamento
Doctrine: Thanksgiving
Original: εὐχαριστία / εὐχαριστῶ
Category: Faith

Inherited from Romans package. Filemone 1:4, Paul’s habitual, by-name prayer of thanks for Philemon. Standard, stable term; minimal risk in this letter’s brief opening.

Jesus

Approved rendering: Gesù
Transliteration: Gesù
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology

Inherited from Romans package. Stable across all Italian traditions; occurs throughout the letter’s opening and closing frames (1:1, 1:3, 1:9, 1:23, 1:25).

Peace

Approved rendering: pace
Transliteration: pace
Doctrine: Peace with God

Inherited from Romans package. Filemone 1:3 salutation formula.

Exhort

Approved rendering: esortare
Transliteration: esortare
Doctrine: Mutual Edification
Original: παρακαλέω
Category: Faith

Inherited from Romans package for the GENERAL encourage/admonish sense of the παρακαλέω word-family. Do NOT use for Filemone’s core rhetorical appeal at 1:9-10 — see the new ‘appeal’ entry below, which fixes a context-specific override for this letter’s central, deliberately non-directive rhetorical strategy.

Fellow Worker

Approved rendering: collaboratore
Transliteration: synergos
Doctrine: Christian Brotherhood across Social Status
Original: συνεργός
Category: Church

Filemone 1:1 (Philemon) and 1:24 (Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, Luke). No competing reading in Italian.

Fellow Soldier

Approved rendering: compagno d’armi
Transliteration: systratiotes
Doctrine: Intercession and Appeal on Behalf of Another
Original: συστρατιώτης
Category: Ministry

Filemone 1:2 (Archippus). Metaphorical spiritual co-combatant; intelligible and non-competing in Italian.

Love

Approved rendering: amore
Transliteration: agape
Doctrine: Intercession and Appeal on Behalf of Another; Grace-Motivated Obedience
Original: ἀγάπη
Category: Faith

Occurs at 1:5, 1:7, and 1:9, where Paul explicitly substitutes appeal-through-love for command. Lexically stable in Italian but doctrinally load-bearing as the stated ground of the whole appeal.

Confident Trusting

Approved rendering: confidando
Transliteration: pepoithos
Doctrine: Grace-Motivated Obedience
Original: πείθω (πεποιθώς)
Category: Obedience

Filemone 1:21. Conveys settled confidence in Philemon’s character, not anxious pressure.

Greet

Approved rendering: salutare
Transliteration: aspazomai
Doctrine: Epistolary convention (not a core doctrine)
Original: ἀσπάζομαι
Category: Ministry

Filemone 1:23. Standard closing-greeting form common across the Pauline corpus.

Written By Hand

Approved rendering: ho scritto (questo) di mia mano
Transliteration: egrapsa te eme cheiri
Doctrine: Forgiveness and Reconciliation
Original: ἔγραψα τῇ ἐμῇ χειρί
Category: Forgiveness

Filemone 1:19. The ancient convention of personally authenticating a pledge, functioning like a modern personal signature/guarantee. May benefit from a cultural-historical footnote.

Low-Medium Risk Terms

Prayer For Another

Approved rendering: preghiera
Transliteration: proseuche
Doctrine: Intercession and Appeal on Behalf of Another
Rejected alternatives: intercessione (bare, for ordinary petition)
Original: προσευχή
Category: Faith

Filemone 1:4, 1:22. Ordinary Christian petitionary prayer for a named person; must NOT be conflated with the Romans baseline’s High-risk technical heavenly-intercession doctrine (Romans 8:26-27) nor import Marian/saints-intercession devotional framing.

Send Back

Approved rendering: ho rimandato / rimando
Transliteration: anapempo
Doctrine: Slavery and the Gospel’s Transforming Power; Forgiveness and Reconciliation
Original: ἀναπέμπω
Category: Social Order

Filemone 1:12. The verb is lexically unremarkable, but the socially and legally loaded act it names — voluntarily returning a runaway slave to his legal owner — must remain clear from context.

Eternal Forever

Approved rendering: per sempre
Transliteration: aionios
Doctrine: Forgiveness and Reconciliation; Christian Brotherhood across Social Status
Original: αἰώνιος
Category: Providence

Filemone 1:15. Ensure the πρὸς ὥραν/αἰώνιον (‘for a while’/‘forever’) contrast remains visible in Italian sentence structure.

Repay

Approved rendering: pagherò io stesso
Transliteration: apotiso
Doctrine: Forgiveness and Reconciliation
Original: ἀποτίνω (ἀποτίσω)
Category: Forgiveness

Filemone 1:19. Must retain the sense of personal, substitutionary payment, following through concretely on the ἐλλογάω request of v.18.

Fellow Prisoner

Approved rendering: compagno di prigionia
Transliteration: synaichmalotos
Doctrine: Apostolic Suffering and Ministry for the Gospel
Rejected alternatives: prigioniero di guerra (anachronistically specific POW/military-legal category)
Original: συναιχμάλωτος
Category: Ministry

Filemone 1:23 (Epaphras). A stronger, more vivid term than δέσμιος; Italian lacks an exact one-word equivalent. Keep distinguishable from ‘prigioniero (di Cristo Gesù)’ (1:1, 1:9, 1:10).

Medium-High Risk Terms

Grant Forgive

Approved rendering: mi sarà concesso / donato
Transliteration: charizomai
Doctrine: Grace; Forgiveness and Reconciliation
Original: χαρίζομαι
Category: Grace

Filemone 1:22. Root-cognate with χάρις (grazia); also the standard NT verb for ‘forgive’ elsewhere in Paul. Paul frames his hoped-for release as a gift of grace secured through prayer, not a legal entitlement. Flag the χάρις-root wordplay for teaching purposes even though a plain functional rendering suffices.
