Core Glossary
Core Glossary — Galatians (English → Italian)
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing theological term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, spanning Galatians 1–6. Terms marked [TM-REUSE] are already recorded in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json/bible_term_registry.json and MUST be rendered exactly as recorded there — no alternatives permitted. Terms marked [NEW] are Galatians-specific additions proposed for inclusion in an updated translation memory prior to Phase 2 processing, with risk tiers assigned using the same Critical/High/Medium/Low framework as the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json.
Table Legend

| love | ἀγάπη (agapē) | amore | NEW | Medium | 5 | Stable alone; doctrinally weighty in combination with “fede” and as fruit of the Spirit |
| flesh (moral sense) | σάρξ (sarx) | carne | NEW | High | 2, 5 | No lexical marker distinguishing neutral-physical vs. sinful-nature senses; context-dependent throughout |

| corruption | φθορά (phthora) | corruzione | NEW | Medium | 6 | Must retain moral-spiritual decay sense, not political/financial “corruzione” |
| household of faith | ὁ οἶκος τῆς πίστεως | la famiglia della fede | NEW | Low-Medium | 6 | Warm, transparent image |

| unity formula (Jew/Greek, slave/free, male/female) | Gal 3:28 | non c’è Giudeo né Greco… | NEW (phrase) | High | 3 | Preserve full ontological “one in Christ” claim; resist anachronistic political framing |

Notes for Translation Memory Integration
- All rows marked TM-REUSE require zero modification to the existing baseline
translation_memory.json; they are cited here for cross-reference completeness only. - All rows marked NEW should be added to an updated
translation_memory.json(version increment required per the governing instruction set) before any Phase 2 segment translation of Galatians begins. - The four Critical-risk NEW terms — opere della legge, crocifisso con Cristo, la fede che opera per mezzo dell’amore, and i segni di Gesù (never “le stigmate”) — require mandatory human theologian review on every occurrence, consistent with the baseline’s Critical-risk handling rule.
- Terms flagged High follow the baseline’s High-risk handling rule: translation memory rendering required, deviation triggers immediate flag.
- This glossary must be read alongside
07_semantic_analysis.mdfor full contextual and theological justification of each entry.
Prepared per PRD Phase 1 Step 1 for the Galatians curriculum, English → Italian. Extends and does not contradict the baseline Romans Language Package.
Critical Risk Terms
Righteousness
Approved rendering: giustizia
Transliteration: giustizia (di Dio)
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: virtù
Original: δικαιοσύνη
Category: Salvation
CRITICAL: Italian ‘giustizia’ overwhelmingly denotes the legal/judicial system in everyday usage. Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Galatians, where it recurs at the letter’s thesis (2:21, 3:6, 3:21).
Justification
Approved rendering: giustificazione
Transliteration: giustificazione
Doctrine: Salvation
Original: δικαιόω / δικαίωσις
Category: Salvation
CRITICAL: the historic Trent/Reformation flashpoint, live within Italy’s own Waldensian minority tradition. Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Galatians. Galatians 2:16 uses the justification verb three times in a single verse, the letter’s explicit thesis statement.
Imputed Righteousness
Approved rendering: giustizia imputata
Transliteration: giustizia imputata
Doctrine: Justification by Faith
Rejected alternatives: giustizia meritata
Original: ἐλογίσθη αὐτῷ εἰς δικαιοσύνην
Category: Salvation
CRITICAL: never ‘giustizia meritata’. Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Galatians. Galatians 3:6 quotes Genesis 15:6 identically to Romans 4:3 and must render identically for cross-document consistency.
Son Of God
Approved rendering: Figlio di Dio
Transliteration: Figlio di Dio
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Original: ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Christology
CRITICAL: full phrase required, conveying eternal, unique Sonship. Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Galatians 2:20, 4:4. Must stay visually and grammatically distinct from believers’ plural, derivative ‘figli di Dio’ (see ‘sons_of_god_believers’ below).
Fall From Grace
Approved rendering: cadere dalla grazia
Transliteration: cadere dalla grazia
Doctrine: Law and Grace
Original: τῆς χάριτος ἐξεπέσατε
Category: Salvation
CRITICAL RISK, NEW, Italy-specific: Galatians 5:4 collides with Catholic sacramental theology’s category of losing ‘lo stato di grazia’ through mortal sin, restored via confession/penance. Paul’s actual point — seeking law-justification forfeits the grace already granted, not a reversible sacramental loss — must be explicitly disambiguated. Mandatory theologian review on every occurrence.
Grace Of God
Approved rendering: grazia di Dio
Transliteration: grazia di Dio
Doctrine: Law and Grace
Original: ἡ χάρις τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Salvation
CRITICAL, NEW: Galatians 2:21’s climactic term, the core passage’s turning point before the justification-by-faith conclusion. Must retain the same full doctrinal force as the standalone ‘grace’ entry above.
Faith Working Through Love
Approved rendering: la fede che opera per mezzo dell’amore
Transliteration: la fede che opera per mezzo dell’amore
Doctrine: Faith Working through Love
Rejected alternatives: la fede formata dall’amore (too close to the Tridentine fides caritate formata formula)
Original: πίστις δι’ ἀγάπης ἐνεργουμένη
Category: Faith
CRITICAL RISK, NEW — the single most Italy-specific flashpoint term in this curriculum: the Council of Trent (Session VI) explicitly appropriated Galatians 5:6’s Latin form (‘fides quae per caritatem operatur’) to ground fides caritate formata against sola fide. Requires an explicit accompanying teaching note (love is faith’s fruit/evidence, not a co-formal cause of justification) on every occurrence; mandatory theologian review.
Works Of The Law
Approved rendering: opere della legge
Transliteration: opere della legge
Doctrine: Law and Grace
Rejected alternatives: buone opere (generic, wrongly implies Paul opposes good works as such rather than law-works as the ground of righteousness)
Original: ἔργα νόμου
Category: Covenant
CRITICAL RISK, NEW: the historic center of the Trent/Reformation debate, live within Italy’s own Waldensian/evangelical minority tradition (Galatians 2:16, 3:2, 3:5, 3:10). Mandatory theologian review on every occurrence.
Crucified With Christ
Approved rendering: sono stato crocifisso con Cristo
Transliteration: synestaurōmai
Doctrine: Crucified with Christ
Original: συνεσταύρωμαι / σταυρόω τὴν σάρκα
Category: Salvation
CRITICAL RISK, NEW, Italy-specific: Galatians 2:19-20, 5:24, 6:14. Risk of absorption into Italian Catholic ascetic ‘mortificazione della carne’ devotional practice rather than a once-for-all, completed, judicial co-crucifixion. The perfect tense (completed action, abiding result) must be preserved, never converted to a present or habitual verb. Mandatory theologian review.
Marks Of Jesus
Approved rendering: i segni di Gesù
Transliteration: ta stigmata tou Iēsou
Doctrine: Crucified with Christ
Rejected alternatives: le stigmate (collides with the St. Francis of Assisi / Padre Pio miraculous-wound devotional category)
Original: τὰ στίγματα τοῦ Ἰησοῦ
Category: Christology
CRITICAL RISK, NEW, the single clearest false-friend risk in the letter: Galatians 6:17. ‘Le stigmate’ would be heard as Paul claiming Padre-Pio-style miraculous wounds rather than his actual, more modest meaning: ordinary scars from persecution, imagery drawn from Greco-Roman slave-branding. NEVER use ‘le stigmate’. Mandatory theologian review on every occurrence.
High Risk Terms
Grace
Approved rendering: grazia
Transliteration: grazia
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: favore
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Same word used by Catholic and Waldensian/evangelical traditions with different doctrinal freight (sacramental mediation vs. sola gratia). Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Galatians. Galatians 2:21 and 5:4 sharpen this into an explicit either/or against law-righteousness — see ‘fall_from_grace’ and ‘grace_of_god’ below.
Calling
Approved rendering: chiamata
Transliteration: chiamata
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Rejected alternatives: vocazione (clergy-narrowing risk)
HIGH RISK: ‘vocazione’ overwhelmingly connotes priestly/religious-life calling in Italian Catholic culture. Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Galatians, including 5:13’s ‘called to freedom’.
Lord
Approved rendering: Signore
Transliteration: Signore
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: padrone
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
HIGH RISK: also the ordinary polite title ‘Mr./sir’. Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Galatians 1:3, 6:14, 6:18, including the epistolary greeting/closing formulas that secular or biblically illiterate readers may skim past.
Fellowship
Approved rendering: comunione fraterna
Transliteration: comunione fraterna
Doctrine: Christian Fellowship
Rejected alternatives: comunione (bare)
Original: κοινωνία
Category: Church
HIGH RISK: bare ‘comunione’ defaults to the Eucharist/First Communion. Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Galatians 2:9’s ‘right hand of fellowship’.
Church
Approved rendering: chiesa
Transliteration: chiesa
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Original: ἐκκλησία
Category: Church
HIGH RISK: capitalized ‘la Chiesa’ denotes the global Catholic institution. Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Galatians 1:2, 1:13, 1:22 — use lower-case plural ‘chiese’ for the local-congregation sense to reduce institutional collision.
Law
Approved rendering: legge
Transliteration: legge
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Original: νόμος
Category: Covenant
Capitalize as ‘la Legge’ for Torah/Mosaic law. Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Galatians, where the term concentrates far more densely (chapters 2-5) than in Romans and interacts with ‘opere della legge’ and ‘la legge di Cristo’ below. Italy’s Thomistic natural-law tradition applies with even greater force here given the Law-and-Grace and Law’s-Purpose doctrines.
Sin
Approved rendering: peccato
Transliteration: peccato
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Original: ἁμαρτία / ἁμαρτωλός
Category: Sin
HIGH RISK: colloquial ‘che peccato!’ (what a pity) drift. Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Galatians 2:15, 2:17’s ‘peccatori/servitore del peccato’.
Another Gospel
Approved rendering: un vangelo diverso / un altro vangelo
Transliteration: un vangelo diverso / un altro vangelo
Doctrine: The True Gospel versus False Gospels
Rejected alternatives: un vangelo alternativo (wrongly implies legitimacy)
Original: ἕτερον εὐαγγέλιον / ἄλλο εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Salvation
HIGH RISK, NEW: must read as self-contradictory (Paul denies it is ‘good news’ at all), not a legitimate denominational alternative — a live risk given Italy’s visible competing Catholic/Waldensian-evangelical/Pentecostal/secular religious landscape (Galatians 1:6-9).
Anathema
Approved rendering: sia anatema
Transliteration: anatema
Doctrine: The True Gospel versus False Gospels
Rejected alternatives: scomunicato (overly specific canon-law term, not Paul’s claim)
Original: ἀνάθεμα
Category: Church
HIGH RISK, NEW, Italy-specific: ‘anatema’ carries strong historical resonance from the Council of Trent’s own repeated ‘anathema sit’ anti-Reformation formula (Galatians 1:8-9). Pair with a plain gloss (‘sia maledetto/escluso dalla comunità’) so Paul is not heard claiming institutional-magisterial authority he does not possess.
Faith In Christ
Approved rendering: fede in Cristo
Transliteration: fede in Cristo
Doctrine: Justification by Faith
Rejected alternatives: la fedeltà di Cristo (subjective-genitive reading; rejected for cross-document consistency with Romans)
Original: πίστις Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ / πίστις Χριστοῦ
Category: Faith
HIGH RISK, NEW: the genitive ‘πίστις Χριστοῦ’ (Galatians 2:16, 2:20, 3:22) is grammatically ambiguous between believer’s faith in Christ (objective genitive) and Christ’s own faithfulness (subjective genitive). Standard Italian rendering retained for consistency with Romans; every occurrence must be flagged per the ambiguity-handling protocol.
Works Of The Flesh
Approved rendering: opere della carne
Transliteration: opere della carne
Doctrine: Flesh versus Spirit
Original: ἔργα τῆς σαρκός
Category: Sin
HIGH RISK, NEW: Galatians 5:19-21’s vice list, deliberately parallel to ‘opere della legge’. Preserve the lexical echo so Italian readers can perceive Paul contrasting two kinds of ‘opere’ — neither able to justify or sanctify — with the Spirit’s ‘frutto’, which grows rather than is worked.
Law Of Christ
Approved rendering: la legge di Cristo
Transliteration: la legge di Cristo
Doctrine: Bearing One Another’s Burdens
Rejected alternatives: nuova legge (wrongly implies a reinstated legal code)
Original: ὁ νόμος τοῦ Χριστοῦ
Category: Covenant
HIGH RISK, NEW: Galatians 6:2. Given how emphatically chapters 3-5 argue believers are no longer under ‘the Law’, this phrase risks readers concluding Paul has reintroduced legalism by another name. Requires explicit teaching-note disambiguation as the Christ-shaped pattern of self-giving love, not a reinstated statute code.
Guardian Paidagogos
Approved rendering: tutore / custode
Transliteration: paidagogos
Doctrine: The Law’s Purpose
Rejected alternatives: maestro, educatore
Original: παιδαγωγός
Category: Covenant
HIGH RISK, NEW: Galatians 3:24-25. The Greco-Roman household-slave supervisory role, not a schoolteacher. ‘Maestro/educatore’ would wrongly suggest the Law taught righteousness rather than merely restrained and escorted Israel until Christ. No clean Italian lexical equivalent exists; paraphrase preferred over transliteration (‘pedagogo’ is a false-friend for ‘education specialist’ in modern Italian).
Curse Of The Law
Approved rendering: maledizione
Transliteration: maledizione
Doctrine: The Law’s Purpose
Rejected alternatives: difficoltà (too weak for penal-substitutionary sense)
Original: κατάρα
Category: Salvation
HIGH RISK, NEW: Galatians 3:10, 3:13 (‘Christ became a curse for us’). Substitutionary, penal language that must not soften into a merely metaphorical ‘endured hardship’; route for theologian review alongside other atonement/propitiation language per the baseline’s Romans 3:25 escalation rule.
Promise
Approved rendering: promessa
Transliteration: promessa
Doctrine: The Abrahamic Covenant and Promise
Original: ἐπαγγελία
Category: Covenant
HIGH RISK, NEW: Galatians 3:14-29, 4:23, 4:28. The promise/law antithesis (3:18) must remain a real contrast, not blended into covenant-continuity theology treating promise and law as complementary aspects of one covenant.
Seed Of Abraham
Approved rendering: discendenza / discendente
Transliteration: sperma
Doctrine: The Abrahamic Covenant and Promise
Original: σπέρμα
Category: Covenant
HIGH RISK, NEW: Galatians 3:16’s Christological argument depends on the grammatical number of Greek ‘sperma’ (singular referent = Christ). Italian ‘discendenza’ is naturally collective; use singular ‘discendente’ with a mandatory translator’s note flagging the number-based argument Italian does not mark automatically.
Slavery
Approved rendering: schiavitù / rendere schiavi
Transliteration: douleia / katadouloō
Doctrine: Freedom in Christ
Rejected alternatives: restrizione (too mild for the total, coercive-bondage sense)
Original: δουλεία / καταδουλόω
Category: Freedom
HIGH RISK, NEW: Galatians 2:4, 4:3, 4:9, 5:1. The sustained negative pole of the letter’s freedom argument; must retain full coercive-bondage force.
Freedom
Approved rendering: libertà
Transliteration: libertà
Doctrine: Freedom in Christ
Original: ἐλευθερία
Category: Freedom
HIGH RISK, NEW, Italy-specific: ‘libertà’ carries strong secular-political resonance (Risorgimento national-independence rhetoric, post-war republican-constitutional discourse), risking a civic reading; conversely risks drifting toward antinomian license, precisely the danger Galatians 5:13 itself warns against. Guard against both directions of drift.
Yoke Of Slavery
Approved rendering: giogo di schiavitù
Transliteration: giogo di schiavitù
Doctrine: Freedom in Christ
Rejected alternatives: oppressione (loses the concrete agricultural image and rhetorical force)
Original: ζυγὸς δουλείας
Category: Freedom
HIGH RISK, NEW: Galatians 5:1. Vivid yoked-oxen metaphor, still broadly intelligible in Italian; must not be abstracted.
Flesh Moral
Approved rendering: carne
Transliteration: sarx
Doctrine: Flesh versus Spirit
Original: σάρξ
Category: Sin
HIGH RISK, NEW: Galatians 5:13, 5:16-25, 6:8. Italian ‘carne’, like the Greek, spans literal meat/body and the sinful-nature sense with no lexical marker distinguishing them; the flesh/Spirit antithesis depends entirely on context and consistent translator handling.
Circumcision
Approved rendering: circoncisione
Transliteration: peritomē
Doctrine: Circumcision and the New Creation
Original: περιτομή
Category: Covenant
HIGH RISK, NEW: Galatians 2:3-5, 5:2-6, 6:12-15, the letter’s central controversy term. No competing devotional-practice default exists in Italian culture, but low OT-narrative literacy leaves readers unable to grasp why the controversy mattered without explicit narrative bridging.
New Creation
Approved rendering: nuova creazione
Transliteration: kainē ktisis
Doctrine: Circumcision and the New Creation
Rejected alternatives: un nuovo inizio (secular self-help flattening)
Original: καινὴ κτίσις
Category: Salvation
HIGH RISK, NEW: Galatians 6:15. Must read as a real, present, inaugurated transformation of identity and cosmos, not a generic ‘fresh start’; cross-reference the baseline’s Christian Identity in Christ doctrine.
Elemental Spirits
Approved rendering: gli elementi del mondo
Transliteration: ta stoicheia tou kosmou
Doctrine: The Law’s Purpose
Rejected alternatives: principi elementari (flattens to mere immature instruction), spiriti del mondo (leans too strongly toward occult reading if used exclusively)
Original: τὰ στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου
Category: Covenant
HIGH RISK, NEW: Galatians 4:3, 4:9. Genuine source-text ambiguity (elementary principles vs. personified cosmic powers); choice must be context-driven per occurrence and flagged for theologian review either way, given Italy’s mixed folk-Catholic/secular-skeptic reception of ‘spiriti’ language.
Judaize
Approved rendering: vivere secondo le usanze giudaiche
Transliteration: Ioudaizein
Doctrine: Circumcision and the New Creation
Rejected alternatives: giudaizzare (coined neologism with no reader-recognizable meaning)
Original: Ἰουδαΐζειν
Category: Covenant
HIGH RISK, NEW: Galatians 2:14. No single-word Italian equivalent exists; must be rendered periphrastically, kept distinct from ‘diventare Giudeo’ (become a Jew), a stronger and different claim than Peter’s behavior implied.
Servant Of Sin
Approved rendering: servitore del peccato
Transliteration: hamartias diakonos
Doctrine: Justification by Faith
Rejected alternatives: diacono del peccato (collides with the recognized clerical office ‘diacono’ in Italian church polity)
Original: ἁμαρτίας διάκονος
Category: Sin
HIGH RISK, NEW: Galatians 2:17. Never render as ‘diacono’ — this would produce an absurd, doctrinally damaging clericalism-flavored reading directly inside the core passage.
Unity Formula
Approved rendering: non c’è Giudeo né Greco… schiavo né libero… maschio e femmina

Category: Church
HIGH RISK, NEW: Galatians 3:28. Must retain the full-strength claim without anachronistic modern egalitarian-political framing foreign to the text’s own argument (status before God, not abolition of all social distinctions).
Gave Himself For Me
Approved rendering: che ha dato se stesso per me
Transliteration: paradontos heauton hyper emou
Doctrine: Crucified with Christ
Rejected alternatives: si è sacrificato per me (softens into generic self-sacrifice-as-moral-example)
Original: παραδόντος ἑαυτὸν ὑπὲρ ἐμοῦ
Category: Christology
HIGH RISK, NEW: Galatians 2:20. Per the baseline’s atonement-escalation rule (modeled on Romans 3:25), must retain personal, substitutionary self-giving. Automatically flag for theologian review.

Faith
Approved rendering: fede
Transliteration: fede
Doctrine: Faith
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
Also names the wedding ring and legal/commercial ‘buona fede’ idiom; comparatively low flattening risk. Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Galatians. Spiritual Gifts
Approved rendering: carismi
Transliteration: carismi
Doctrine: Spiritual Gifts
Rejected alternatives: doni naturali
Original: χαρίσματα
Category: Church
Not directly named in Galatians’ text, but doctrinally adjacent to ‘il frutto dello Spirito’ (5:22-23) given Italy’s three-way Catholic Charismatic Renewal / Pentecostal Assemblee di Dio / evangelical engagement with both categories. Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly, kept terminologically distinct from ‘fruit_of_the_spirit’ below.
Kingdom Of God
Approved rendering: Regno di Dio
Transliteration: Regno di Dio

Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles
Original: Ἰσραήλ

Original: ὁ αἰὼν ὁ ἐνεστὼς πονηρός
Category: Eschatology

Transliteration: mi ha appartato / mi ha separato
Doctrine: Paul’s Apostleship
Original: ἀφορίζω
Category: Salvation
NEW: Galatians 1:15, God’s effectual pre-natal setting-apart of Paul for apostolic ministry. Cross-reference the baseline’s Divine Calling / Effectual Calling doctrines (High in Romans); a strong Galatians prooftext for the same doctrine.
Love
Approved rendering: amore
Transliteration: amore
Doctrine: Faith Working through Love
Original: ἀγάπη

Approved rendering: carne

Fruit Of The Spirit
Approved rendering: il frutto dello Spirito

Doctrine: The Abrahamic Covenant and Promise

Approved rendering: è morto invano / per nulla
Transliteration: dōrean apethanen
Doctrine: Law and Grace
Original: δωρεὰν ἀπέθανεν
Category: Salvation

Low Risk Terms
Gospel
Approved rendering: vangelo
Transliteration: vangelo
Doctrine: Gospel
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Salvation
Shared, stable term across the Catholic CEI translation and Protestant Diodati/Riveduta tradition. Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Galatians. Galatians 1:6-9’s polemic against ‘un altro vangelo’ locally elevates contextual doctrinal risk (see ‘another_gospel’ entry below), but the base rendering ‘vangelo’ itself is unchanged.
Apostle
Approved rendering: apostolo
Transliteration: apostolo
Doctrine: Apostleship
Original: ἀπόστολος
Category: Church
Stable, shared term across all Italian Bible traditions. Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Galatians. NOTE: Galatians 1:1’s emphatic ‘not from men nor through man’ argument locally elevates contextual risk toward Medium/High, since Italy’s apostolic-succession ecclesiology predisposes readers to an institutional-office default reading; the base doctrine_risk value is retained per baseline, but every occurrence in Galatians 1-2 should be reviewed with this in mind.
Peace
Approved rendering: pace
Transliteration: pace
Doctrine: Peace with God
Original: εἰρήνη
Category: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Galatians 1:3 (greeting) and 5:22 (fruit of the Spirit).
