Core Glossary

Core Glossary: The Gospel of John

How to Use This Glossary

  • [REUSE: baseline] terms: rendering is fixed by the Romans translation_memory.json; this glossary cites the passage(s) in John where the term recurs and notes any John-specific interpretive pressure.
  • New terms: proposed for addition to translation memory before Phase 2 translation begins. Each entry lists Italian rendering, doctrine risk tier, key John passages, and translation notes. Critical/High entries require human theologian sign-off before being locked into translation memory, per the baseline’s escalation rules.

Section 1 — Baseline Terms Reused Exactly (Romans → John)

Term (Eng.)Italian (fixed)Risk (baseline)Key John passagesJohn-specific note
GodDioMedium/CriticalthroughoutNo change; John intensifies deity-of-Christ pressure around this term (1:1,18; 20:28).
JesusGesùLow/CriticalthroughoutNo change.
LordSignoreHigh/Critical4:1; 6:23; 9:38; 11:2-3; 20:2,13,18,20,25,28; 21:7,12”Mio Signore e mio Dio!” (20:28, Thomas) is the Gospel’s climactic confession; must not read as the mundane polite title.
Son of GodFiglio di DioCritical1:34,49; 3:18; 5:25; 9:35; 10:36; 11:4,27; 19:7; 20:31Reinforced throughout by μονογενής (see Section 2) — combine as “l’unigenito Figlio di Dio” where both occur together.
Holy SpiritSpirito SantoMedium/Critical1:32-33; 3:5-6,8; 7:39; 14:26; 20:22Also the referent of Παράκλητος (see Section 2) in chs. 14-16 — teach the two titles as naming the same Person.
FatherPadreMediumthroughout, esp. 1:14,18; 5:17-23; 10:30,38; 14:6-11; 17John’s “the Father” usage is thoroughly relational-Trinitarian; the priestly-title adjacency noted in the baseline remains a minor background risk.
GracegraziaHigh1:14,16-17”Grazia e verità” (1:14,17) — the Tridentine-vs-sola-gratia freight from Romans applies identically here.
Faith (noun)fedeMedium20:27 (“non essere incredulo ma credente”)Verb form πιστεύω is treated as a new High-risk entry below (Section 2) given its programmatic frequency in John (98 occurrences).
SinpeccatoHigh1:29; 8:21,24,34,46; 9:2-3,41; 15:22-24; 16:8-9; 19:11; 20:23The “che peccato!” colloquial-drift risk noted in the baseline applies with equal force in John, especially 1:29 (“the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world”) and 16:8-9 (Spirit convicts “concerning sin”).
LawleggeHigh1:17,45; 7:19,23,49,51; 8:5,17; 10:34; 19:7John’s “the Law” usage is mostly straightforward Torah reference; lower additional risk beyond the baseline’s existing notes.
ResurrectionrisurrezioneMedium/Critical5:29; 11:24-25; 20 (throughout)Must be kept distinct from κοιμάομαι (sleep-euphemism, Low risk) and ἐγείρω (raise, of Lazarus, a temporary resuscitation) — see Section 2 note on ch. 11.
Kingdom of GodRegno di DioMedium3:3,5; 18:36Only 2 occurrences outside the trial scene (18:36, “my kingdom is not of this world”) — reinforce the non-political sense flagged in the baseline.
Messiah/ChristMessiaMedium1:20,25,41; 4:25,29; 7:26-27,31,41-42; 9:22; 10:24; 11:27; 20:31Stable; John explicitly glosses the transliterated “Messias” with “Christos” at 1:41; 4:25.
IsraelIsraeleMedium1:31,47,49; 3:10; 12:13Contemporary political-conflation risk noted in the baseline applies unchanged.
David/seed of DavidDavide / discendente di DavideLow/Medium7:42Stable.
ElectionelezioneHigh(implicit background to 6:37,44,65; 10:26-29; 15:16,19; 17:6,9)John does not use ἐκλογή directly but the effectual-calling/election theology is pervasive (esp. 6:44’s ἑλκύω, see Section 2); apply the baseline’s Thomistic-vs-Reformed caution.
PeacepaceLow/Medium14:27; 16:33; 20:19,21,26John’s post-resurrection greeting “Pace a voi” recurs three times in ch. 20 — keep uniform.
GlorygloriaMedium/High1:14; 2:11; 7:18; 8:50,54; 11:4,40; 12:41,43; 17:5,22,24Intensified by the cross-as-glorification paradox (see δοξάζω, Section 2).
Sanctificationsantificazione / santificareMedium17:17,19Stable.
ApostleapostoloLow(not used as a title in John’s narrative proper; ἀπόστολος absent, but ἀποστέλλω “send” is pervasive — see Section 2)Note for reviewers: John prefers “sending” verb-language over the noun “apostle.”

(Additional baseline terms — thanksgiving, exhort, covenant, prophet, prophecy, providence, mission, gentiles, church, spiritual gifts, fellowship, obedience of faith, power of God, incarnation, imputed righteousness, justification, righteousness, salvation, adoption, calling/called — occur rarely or not at all as distinct lexical items in John’s Gospel; where they do appear incidentally they carry no additional John-specific risk beyond the baseline and are not re-tabled here.)

Section 2 — New Terms Introduced by John (Proposed for Translation Memory)

#Term (Eng.)Original (Greek)TransliterationLiteral meaningItalian renderingRiskKey passagesAlternatives rejectedNotes
1Word (Logos)λόγοςlogosword, account, reasonil VerboCritical1:1,14la Parola (Riveduta tradition; creates gender-agreement risk with the masculine personal referent)Anchors “Deity and Pre-existence of Christ.” Denominational fault line between CEI (“il Verbo”) and Riveduta (“la Parola”) traditions; adopt “il Verbo” for consistency across this curriculum.
2”the Word was God”θεὸς ἦν ὁ λόγοςtheos ēn ho logosGod was the Worde il Verbo era DioCritical1:1”il Verbo era un dio” / “il Verbo era divino” (both historically used to deny full deity)Anarthrous θεός signals full qualitative deity without collapsing personal distinction from the Father. Mandatory theologian review every occurrence.
3Only begotten / unique Sonμονογενήςmonogenēsonly, unique (of its kind)unigenitoCritical1:14,18; 3:16,18unico (bare, loses creedal/eternal-generation resonance)Reinforced by the Italian Nicene Creed’s “unigenito Figlio di Dio.” Combine with [REUSE] “Figlio di Dio.”
4Tabernacled/dweltσκηνόωskēnoōpitch a tent, dwellvenne ad abitare (in mezzo a noi)High1:14Tabernacle/Shekinah allusion (Exodus 25-40) is lost in plain rendering; supply explanatory note.
5Lamb of Godἀμνὸς τοῦ Θεοῦamnos tou Theoulamb of GodAgnello di DioHigh1:29,36Reinforced by weekly Catholic liturgical use (“Agnello di Dio” at Mass) — asset for recognition, risk of purely liturgical/ritual hearing over substitutionary-atonement meaning. Anchors “Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection.”
6Son of Manυἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπουhuios tou anthrōpouson of manFiglio dell’uomoHigh1:51; 3:13-14; 5:27; 6:27,53,62; 8:28; 9:35; 12:23,34; 13:31Daniel 7:13-14 background (exalted judge-figure), not merely a humility title; low OT literacy requires explicit cross-referencing.
7The Jews (Johannine usage)Ἰουδαῖος (pl. Ἰουδαῖοι)Ioudaios/IoudaioiJew, JudeanGiudeo/Giudei (context-sensitive; consider “i capi dei Giudei” where narrowly polemical)High/Critical1:19; 5:10-18; 7:1-35; 8:22-57; 9:18-22; 10:19-33; 11:8,54; 18-19 (throughout the Passion narrative)blanket “gli Ebrei” (ethnic-only term, does not resolve the narrowing issue either)Historical misuse for anti-Judaic readings; salient given Italy’s ancient Roman Jewish community and 1938 racial-laws/Shoah history. Flag every chapter occurrence; recommend contextual narrowing where John’s referent is a specific leadership faction, not the Jewish people as a whole.
8Believeπιστεύωpisteuōbelieve, trust, entrust oneselfcredere (in)Highthroughout; programmatic at 1:7,12; 3:12,15-18,36; 6:29,35,47; 11:25-27; 20:31credere che (bare propositional assent only)Verb-form counterpart to [REUSE] “fede.” John’s πιστεύω εἰς construction requires “credere in” (trust-union), not mere assent. Central to “Eternal Life through Faith in Christ.”
9Perishἀπόλλυμιapollymiperish, be destroyed, be lostperireHigh3:16; 6:27,39; 10:10,28; 17:12; 18:9perdersi (get lost — implies accidental, reversible, non-culpable state)Protects the reality of judgment as a morally accountable alternative to eternal life.
10Worldκόσμοςkosmosworld, cosmos, humanity, world-systemmondoHighthroughout, esp. 1:9-10,29; 3:16-17,19; 12:31; 15:18-19; 16:33; 17:14-16Dual valence (expansive love-object vs. God-opposing system) must be tracked per occurrence, not flattened either direction. Anchors “God’s Love for the World.”
11Light / Darknessφῶς / σκότος (σκοτία)phōs / skotos (skotia)light / darknessluce / tenebra(e)Medium1:4-9; 3:19-21; 8:12; 9:5; 12:35-36,46Moral-spiritual allegiance sense, not merely literary/epistemic metaphor.
12Judge / Judgmentκρίνω / κρίσις / κρίμαkrinō / krisis / krimajudge, judgment, verdictgiudicare / giudizioHigh3:17-19; 5:22,24,27,29-30; 7:24; 8:15-16,26,50; 9:39; 12:31,47-48; 16:8,11Risk of collapse into subjective “opinion” sense (Italian idiom “a mio giudizio”). Anchors “Judgment and Belief/Unbelief.”
13Born again / born from aboveγεννηθῇ ἄνωθενgennēthē anōthenbe born again / be born from abovenascere di nuovo, dall’alto (combined, footnoted)Critical3:3,7 (cf. 3:31 for the unambiguous spatial sense)dall’alto alone (loses Nicodemus’s literalistic-misunderstanding logic); di nuovo alone (under-signals divine origin)Genuinely double-sensed Greek term; Italian cannot carry both senses in one word. Core term for “New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit.” Mandatory theologian review.
14Born of water and Spiritγεννηθῇ ἐξ ὕδατος καὶ πνεύματοςgennēthē ex hydatos kai pneumatosborn of water and spiritnascere da acqua e SpiritoCritical3:5Catholic sacramental-baptism reading vs. evangelical symbolic-cleansing reading; identical flashpoint structure to the baseline’s grace/justification Tridentine-vs-Reformation note. Do not resolve silently.
15Spirit/wind wordplayπνεῦμαpneumawind, breath, spiritSpirito / vento (untranslatable pun; footnote required)N/A (translation-loss flag, not doctrinal risk)3:8Greek’s single word for both senses cannot be reproduced by Italian’s two unrelated words; mandatory translator note, no forced pun.
16Lifted up / exaltedὑψόω (ὑψωθῆναι)hypsoō (hypsōthēnai)lift up; exaltessere innalzatoCritical3:14; 8:28; 12:32-34essere crocifisso (alone, loses exaltation sense); essere esaltato (alone, loses crucifixion referent)Deliberate double meaning (physical elevation + glorification) must be held together. Core term for “Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection.”
17Eternal lifeζωὴ αἰώνιοςzōē aiōnioslife of the age (to come); eternal lifevita eternaHigh3:15-16,36; 4:14,36; 5:24,39; 6:27,40,47,54,68; 10:28; 12:25,50; 17:2-3Risk of flattening to future-only afterlife concept; John (esp. 17:3) presents it as present, relational, and qualitatively divine life.
18Signσημεῖονsēmeionsign, tokensegnoMedium2:11,18,23; 3:2; 4:48,54; 6:2,14,26,30; 7:31; 9:16; 11:47; 12:18,37; 20:30miracolo (risks collapsing to mere wonder-display)John’s distinctive signs theology: acts pointing beyond themselves to Jesus’ identity.
19Testify / testimonyμαρτυρέω / μαρτυρίαmartyreō / martyriatestify, bear witness / testimonytestimoniare / testimonianzaMedium1:7-8,15,19,32,34; 3:11,26,28,32-33; 5:31-39; 8:13-18; 15:26-27; 19:35; 21:24Forensic/trial-motif reinforcement is a strength here; retain the authoritative-attestation weight beyond ordinary “opinion-sharing.”
20Truthἀλήθειαalētheiatruth, unconcealed realityveritàMedium1:14,17; 3:21; 4:23-24; 8:32,44; 14:6,17; 16:13; 17:17,19; 18:37-38Relational/revelatory sense (God’s self-disclosure, “doing the truth”) vs. Italian’s more propositional/philosophical default.
21Fleshσάρξsarxflesh, human nature/substancecarneMedium-High1:14; 3:6; 6:51-56,63; 8:15; 17:2Positive/neutral Johannine anthropological sense risks bleeding with the negative Pauline “carnale” connotation carried over from the Romans baseline.
22Equal with Godἴσος τῷ θεῷisos tō theōequal to Goduguale a Dio / pari a DioCritical5:18simile a Dio (similar — too weak); vicino a Dio (close to — too weak)Strongest single-verse deity claim outside the Prologue. Mandatory theologian review.
23Give lifeζωοποιέωzōopoieōmake alive, give lifedare la vita / far vivereHigh5:21; 6:63Must convey a shared divine prerogative, not generic healing.
24Bread of lifeἄρτος τῆς ζωῆςartos tēs zōēsbread of lifepane della vitaHigh6:35,48,51I AM statement; manna typology (Exodus 16) requires supplied background.
25Flesh and blood (eucharistic language)σὰρξ καὶ αἷμαsarx kai haimaflesh and bloodcarne e sangueHigh6:51-58Catholic (sacramental/Eucharistic) vs. evangelical (symbolic, cross-pointing) reading tension; identical structure to baseline’s “comunione” flashpoint.
26Draw (effectual)ἑλκύωhelkyōdraw, dragattirare / trarreHigh6:44; 12:32Ties to baseline’s election/effectual-calling Thomistic-vs-Reformed caution; do not resolve silently.
27I AM (absolute)ἐγώ εἰμιegō eimiI amIo sonoCritical8:24,28,58; 13:19; 18:5-6sono io (ordinary self-identification idiom — flattens the Exodus 3:14 LXX divine-name echo)Strongest deity claim outside the Prologue and 5:18; requires mandatory theologian review and a distinguishing note from the seven predicated “I am ___” statements below.
28Before Abraham wasπρὸ Ἀβραὰμ γενέσθαιpro Abraam genesthaibefore Abraham came to beprima che Abramo fosseCritical8:58Direct pre-existence claim.
29Good Shepherdποιμὴν ὁ καλόςpoimēn ho kalosthe good shepherdil buon pastoreHigh10:11,14Self-revelatory I AM-adjacent title; Ezekiel 34/Psalm 23 background.
30Lay down [one’s] lifeτίθημι τὴν ψυχήνtithēmi tēn psychēnlay down one’s lifedare la vitaHigh10:11,15,17-18; 15:13Voluntary substitutionary self-giving with resurrection-authority (10:18) — keep both elements together.
31I and the Father are oneἐγὼ καὶ ὁ πατὴρ ἕν ἐσμενegō kai ho patēr hen esmenI and the Father are oneio e il Padre siamo unoCritical10:30siamo d’accordo (mere agreement — too weak, does not explain hearers’ blasphemy charge)Anchors “Unity of the Father and the Son.” Neuter ἕν = unity of being, not merely purpose.
32The resurrection and the lifeἀνάστασις καὶ ζωήanastasis kai zōēthe resurrection and the lifela risurrezione e la vitaCritical11:25Personal-identity I AM claim combining [REUSE] risurrezione + new ζωή entries.
33The Hourὥραhōrahour, appointed timel’oraMedium-High2:4; 7:30; 8:20; 12:23,27; 13:1; 17:1Technical Johannine term for the appointed moment of death-glorification, not generic clock-time.
34GlorifyδοξάζωdoxazōglorifyglorificareHigh7:39; 8:54; 11:4; 12:16,23,28; 13:31-32; 14:13; 15:8; 16:14; 17:1,4-5,10Retain the paradox: the cross itself, not only the resurrection, is called “glorification.”
35Ruler of this worldἄρχων τοῦ κόσμου τούτουarchōn tou kosmou toutouruler of this worldil principe di questo mondoMedium-High12:31; 14:30; 16:11Real but already-judged/defeated power, not a co-equal dualistic rival.
36New commandmentἐντολὴ καινήentolē kainēnew commandmentcomandamento nuovoMedium13:34-35Christologically grounded, mutual love as the mark of discipleship.
37Way, Truth, Lifeὁδὸς ἀλήθεια ζωήhodos alētheia zōēthe way, the truth, the lifevia, verità, vitaCritical14:6Exclusivity clause (“no one comes to the Father except through me”) must not be softened.
38Counselor/ParacleteΠαράκλητοςParaklētosone called alongside to help; advocateConsolatoreCritical14:16,26; 15:26; 16:7Paraclito (bare transliteration — theologically correct but less transparent; retained as a supplementary gloss, not the running-text term)“Consolatore” (both CEI and Riveduta) under-represents the forensic-advocacy sense also present in the Greek. Anchors “The Holy Spirit as Counselor.” Mandatory theologian review.
39Spirit of Truthπνεῦμα τῆς ἀληθείαςpneuma tēs alētheiasSpirit of truthSpirito di veritàHigh14:17; 15:26; 16:13Identifies the Paraclete as [REUSE] Spirito Santo; combine notes.

43Overcomeνικάωnikaōconquer, be victoriousvincereMedium16:33Present-tense triumphal declaration prior to the cross; do not soften to future-only hope.
44Unity (of believers, patterned on the Trinity)ἕνhenone (neuter)unoCritical17:11,21-23Extends “Unity of the Father and the Son” (10:30) into a model for believers’ unity; retain ontological weight.
45Wrath of Godὀργὴ τοῦ θεοῦorgē tou theouwrath of Godira di DioHigh3:36delusione di Dio (disappointment — far too weak)Real, personal, judicial response to unbelief; anchors “Judgment and Belief/Unbelief.”
46It is finished/accomplishedτετέλεσταιtetelestaiit has been completed/accomplished”È compiuto”Critical19:30”È finita” (mere cessation, loses the completed-accomplishment sense)Commercial/legal “debt-paid” register; climactic term for “Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection.”
47Blood and waterαἷμα καὶ ὕδωρhaima kai hydōrblood and watersangue e acquaMedium19:34Same sacramental-symbolism sensitivity as 3:5 and 6:53-58; treat with restraint.
48So that you may believe (purpose statement)ἵνα πιστεύ(σ)ητεhina pisteusēteso that you may believeperché crediateHigh20:31The Gospel’s own interpretive key for its pervasive use of πιστεύω.
49Love (two verbs, one Italian equivalent)ἀγαπάω / φιλέωagapaō / phileōloveamareMedium3:16,19,35; 5:20; 11:3,5,36; 13:23; 15:9-17; 21:15-17Italian’s single “amare” collapses the Greek lexical variety; avoid overstating a rigid agape/lesser-love distinction not consistently supported by John’s own usage (cf. 3:16 vs. 3:19, both ἀγαπάω).
50Put out of the synagogueἀποσυνάγωγος (concept)aposynagōgosexpelled from the synagogueespulso dalla sinagogaMedium9:22,34; 12:42; 16:2Requires historical-context framing; handle alongside the Ἰουδαῖος guidance (#7).

52Worshipπροσκυνέωproskyneōbow down, worshipadorareHigh4:20-24; 9:38; 12:20venerare (reserved in Italian Catholic theology for saints/Mary — a useful, not a competing, distinction here)Already theologically precise in Italian via the Catholic latria/dulia distinction; risk is mainly colloquial flattening to generic respect.
53Living waterὕδωρ ζῶνhydōr zōnliving (flowing) wateracqua vivaMedium-High4:10-14; 7:38Must retain the “permanently life-giving/satisfying” metaphor, not merely “fresh water.”
54Savior of the worldσωτὴρ τοῦ κόσμουsōtēr tou kosmouSavior of the worldSalvatore del mondoMedium4:42Universalizes “God’s Love for the World” theme; combine [REUSE] salvezza root.
55Temple (of his body)ναόςnaosinner sanctuary, templetempioMedium2:19-21Greek distinguishes ναός (inner sanctuary/here, Jesus’ body) from ἱερόν (wider precinct); this distinction is not preserved by a single Italian word — footnote required.

Section 3 — Cross-Cutting Translator Notes (Apply Across All Chapters)

  1. Consistency with core-passage renderings is mandatory. Any term appearing in both John 3:1-21 and elsewhere in the book (ἄνωθεν, πνεῦμα, ὑψόω, ζωὴ αἰώνιος, κόσμος, κρίνω/κρίσις, πιστεύω, ἀπόλλυμι) must receive the identical Italian rendering established in Part A of 07_semantic_analysis.md, per the baseline’s “Theological Consistency Rules Across Documents.”
  2. The absolute ἐγώ εἰμι (Io sono) must be typographically or contextually distinguished in translator notes from the seven predicated “I am ___” statements (bread of life, light of the world, door, good shepherd, resurrection and the life, way/truth/life, true vine), which function as revelatory metaphors rather than bare divine self-naming, even though both draw on the same underlying formula’s authority.
  3. Ἰουδαῖος/Ἰουδαῖοι requires the highest standing vigilance of any recurring term in this book, given both its doctrinal stakes (Unity of Jews and Gentiles) and Italy’s specific communal history; every occurrence should be flagged for human theologian review, not merely High/Critical terms elsewhere.
  4. Sacramental-flashpoint terms (born of water and Spirit, 3:5; flesh and blood, 6:51-58; blood and water, 19:34) form a recognizable family and should be routed together for consistent theologian review, mirroring the baseline’s grace/justification Tridentine-vs-Reformation escalation pattern.
  5. The Paraclete family (Consolatore/Spirito di verità/Spirito Santo) must be taught as three names for one Person, consistently cross-referenced across chs. 14-16 and 20:22.

This glossary must be merged into an updated translation_memory.json (version increment required) before Phase 2 segment translation of John begins, per the baseline’s “Translation Memory Load and Enforcement Instructions.”

Critical Risk Terms

God

Approved rendering: Dio
Transliteration: Dio
Doctrine: The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word)
Original: θεός
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package (translation unchanged). Risk elevated from Medium (Romans) to Critical for John because the Gospel repeatedly and cumulatively asserts Jesus’ full identity with theos (1:1; 1:18; 20:28, Thomas’s ‘Mio Signore e mio Dio!’), making every occurrence of ‘Dio’ adjacent to a Christological identity-claim a Critical-tier concern in this book specifically.

Jesus

Approved rendering: Gesù
Transliteration: Gesù
Doctrine: The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word)
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology

Inherited from Romans package (translation unchanged). Risk elevated from Low (Romans) to Critical for John because so many of this book’s Critical-risk doctrinal claims (deity, pre-existence, unity with the Father, the absolute ‘I am’) attach directly to this proper name in copular and identity statements.

Lord

Approved rendering: Signore
Transliteration: Signore
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: padrone
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology

Inherited from Romans package (translation and rejected alternative unchanged). Risk elevated from High (Romans) to Critical for John because 20:28 (‘Mio Signore e mio Dio!’) is the Gospel’s climactic confession; ‘Signore’ still doubles as the everyday polite title ‘Signor Rossi’ in ordinary Italian, and must never be softened at this verse.

Son Of God

Approved rendering: Figlio di Dio
Transliteration: Figlio di Dio
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Original: υἱὸς τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Christology

Inherited from Romans package (translation unchanged; risk already Critical in Romans, unchanged for John). Reinforced throughout John (1:34,49; 3:18; 5:25; 9:35; 10:36; 11:4,27; 19:7; 20:31) and combined with new term ‘unigenito’ at 1:14,18 and 3:16,18 as ‘l’unigenito Figlio di Dio’.

Holy Spirit

Approved rendering: Spirito Santo
Transliteration: Spirito Santo
Doctrine: The Holy Spirit as Counselor
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: Pneumatology

Inherited from Romans package (translation unchanged). Risk elevated from Medium (Romans) to Critical for John because this term is the direct grammatical subject of the ambiguous ‘born of water and Spirit’ regeneration clause (3:5) and is also named ‘Consolatore’ (Paraclete) in chs.14-16 and imparted at 20:22 — teach as one Person under multiple titles.

Incarnation

Approved rendering: incarnazione
Transliteration: incarnazione
Doctrine: Incarnation of the Word
Original: ὁ λόγος σὰρξ ἐγένετο
Category: Christology

Inherited from Romans package (translation unchanged). Risk elevated from Medium (Romans) to Critical for John, since this is now the direct textual event (1:14), not a background doctrine inferred from ‘seed of David’ as in Romans. Colloquial ‘incarnare’ (an actor ‘incarna un personaggio’) risks flattening a permanent, unique metaphysical event into temporary role-portrayal.

Word Logos

Approved rendering: il Verbo
Transliteration: il Verbo (Logos)
Doctrine: The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word)
Rejected alternatives: la Parola (Riveduta tradition; creates gender-agreement risk with the masculine personal referent throughout the chapter)
Original: λόγος
Category: Christology

New term proper to John. Denominational fault line internal to Italian Bible tradition: CEI renders ‘il Verbo’ (masculine, title-like, creedally reinforced by the Italian Nicene Creed); Riveduta historically renders ‘la Parola’ (feminine, ordinary word-for-word). Fixed as ‘il Verbo’ for this curriculum. Mandatory theologian review given centrality to Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (1:1,14).

Word Was God

Approved rendering: e il Verbo era Dio
Transliteration: e il Verbo era Dio
Doctrine: The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word)
Rejected alternatives: il Verbo era un dio (a god among others), il Verbo era divino (merely qualitatively divine)
Original: θεὸς ἦν ὁ λόγος
Category: Christology

New term proper to John (1:1c). The anarthrous θεός predicate asserts full, essential deity while preserving personal distinction from the Father. Both rejected alternatives have been used historically by non-Trinitarian groups in Italy to deny full deity. Mandatory theologian review at every occurrence.

Only Begotten

Approved rendering: unigenito
Transliteration: unigenito
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: unico (bare, loses creedal/eternal-generation resonance)
Original: μονογενής
Category: Christology

New term proper to John (1:14,18; 3:16,18). Reinforced by the Italian Nicene Creed’s ‘unigenito Figlio di Dio, nato dal Padre’. Combine with ‘Figlio di Dio’ where both occur.

The Jews

Approved rendering: Giudeo / Giudei
Transliteration: Giudeo / Giudei (context-sensitive; consider “i capi dei Giudei” where narrowly polemical)
Doctrine: The Jews and the Covenant People in John’s Narrative
Rejected alternatives: blanket “gli Ebrei” (ethnic-only term, does not resolve the narrowing issue either)
Original: Ἰουδαῖος / Ἰουδαῖοι
Category: Covenant

New term proper to John’s extensive Ἰουδαῖος/Ἰουδαῖοι usage (1:19; 5:10-18; 7:1-35; 8:22-57; 9:18-22; 10:19-33; 11:8,54; 18-19 throughout the Passion). CRITICAL, requiring the highest standing vigilance of any recurring term in this book, given Italy’s ancient, continuous Roman Jewish community and the 1938 Racial Laws/Shoah history. Recommend contextual narrowing (‘i capi dei Giudei’, ‘alcuni Giudei’) where the referent is a specific leadership faction, not the whole people. Flag every chapter occurrence for human theologian review, not only where it co-occurs with other Critical/High terms.

Born Again

Approved rendering: nascere di nuovo, dall’alto
Transliteration: nascere di nuovo, dall’alto
Doctrine: The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit
Rejected alternatives: dall’alto alone (loses Nicodemus’s literalistic-misunderstanding logic), di nuovo alone (under-signals divine origin)
Original: γεννηθῇ ἄνωθεν
Category: Sanctification

New term proper to John (ἄνωθεν, 3:3,7; unambiguously spatial sense confirmed at 3:31). Single highest-priority Critical item in this curriculum: Italian cannot reproduce both the spatial and repetitive senses in one word. Mandatory footnote and mandatory theologian review at every occurrence.

Born Of Water And Spirit

Approved rendering: nascere da acqua e Spirito
Transliteration: nascere da acqua e Spirito
Doctrine: The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit
Original: γεννηθῇ ἐξ ὕδατος καὶ πνεύματος
Category: Sanctification

New term proper to John (3:5). Catholic catechesis reads ‘acqua e Spirito’ as pointing directly to sacramental baptismal regeneration (CCC 1215); Waldensian/evangelical tradition reads water as symbolic and insists regeneration is the Spirit’s sovereign work alone. Identical flashpoint structure to the Romans baseline’s grace/justification Tridentine-vs-Reformation note. Do not resolve the ambiguity silently in either direction; mandatory theologian review. Route together with ‘flesh_and_blood’ and ‘blood_and_water’ as one reviewed family.

Lifted Up

Approved rendering: essere innalzato
Transliteration: essere innalzato
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection
Rejected alternatives: essere crocifisso (alone, loses exaltation sense), essere esaltato (alone, loses concrete crucifixion referent)
Original: ὑψόω (ὑψωθῆναι)
Category: Christology

New term proper to John (ὑψόω, 3:14; 8:28; 12:32-34). Italian ‘innalzare’ reasonably carries both physical-elevation and honorific-exaltation senses (a rare positive convergence), but translators must actively confirm both remain simultaneously legible rather than resolving to only one. Linguistic anchor for the cross as glorification-through-suffering.

Equal With God

Approved rendering: uguale a Dio / pari a Dio
Transliteration: uguale a Dio / pari a Dio
Doctrine: The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word)
Rejected alternatives: simile a Dio (similar to God — too weak), vicino a Dio (close to God — too weak)
Original: ἴσος τῷ θεῷ
Category: Christology

New term proper to John (ἴσος τῷ θεῷ, 5:18). Strongest single-verse deity claim outside the Prologue and the absolute ‘I am’ sayings; the hearers’ immediate rejection of the claim confirms the strong sense was understood. Mandatory theologian review.

I Am Absolute

Approved rendering: Io sono
Transliteration: Io sono
Doctrine: The Seven ‘I Am’ Statements
Rejected alternatives: sono io (ordinary self-identification idiom — flattens the Exodus 3:14 LXX divine-name echo)
Original: ἐγώ εἰμι
Category: Christology

New term proper to John (ἐγώ εἰμι absolute, 8:24,28,58; 13:19; 18:5-6). Ordinary Italian idiom ‘sono io’ risks flattening the divine-name echo, most damagingly at 18:5-6 where the arresting party’s falling to the ground is otherwise inexplicable. Reserve exclusively for these absolute occurrences; never use as a stylistic variant elsewhere; distinguish from the seven predicated ‘I am ___’ statements. Mandatory theologian review.

Before Abraham

Approved rendering: prima che Abramo fosse
Transliteration: prima che Abramo fosse
Doctrine: The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word)
Original: πρὸ Ἀβραὰμ γενέσθαι
Category: Christology

New term proper to John (πρὸ Ἀβραὰμ γενέσθαι, 8:58). Direct temporal-priority pre-existence claim, provoking an attempted stoning for blasphemy in the narrative.

One With The Father

Approved rendering: io e il Padre siamo uno
Transliteration: io e il Padre siamo uno
Doctrine: Unity of the Father and the Son
Rejected alternatives: siamo d’accordo (mere agreement — too weak, does not explain hearers’ blasphemy charge), siamo simili (we are alike — too weak)
Original: ἐγὼ καὶ ὁ πατὴρ ἕν ἐσμεν
Category: Christology

New term proper to John (ἐγὼ καὶ ὁ πατὴρ ἕν ἐσμεν, 10:30). Neuter ἕν indicates unity of essence/being, not merely agreement; the hearers’ blasphemy charge at 10:33 is only explicable if this strong ontological sense is preserved. Mandatory theologian review.

Resurrection And The Life

Approved rendering: la risurrezione e la vita
Transliteration: la risurrezione e la vita
Doctrine: The Seven ‘I Am’ Statements
Original: ἀνάστασις καὶ ζωή
Category: Christology

New term proper to John (ἀνάστασις καὶ ζωή, 11:25). Fifth ‘I am’ statement combining baseline ‘risurrezione’ with new ζωή terminology into a personal-identity claim; must be distinguished from Lazarus’s temporary resuscitation in teaching material.

Way Truth Life

Approved rendering: via, verità, vita
Transliteration: via, verità, vita
Doctrine: The Seven ‘I Am’ Statements
Original: ὁδὸς ἀλήθεια ζωή
Category: Christology

New term proper to John (ὁδὸς ἀλήθεια ζωή, 14:6). The exclusivity clause (‘no one comes to the Father except through me’) must not be softened, notwithstanding tension with contemporary Italian religious pluralism.

Paraclete

Approved rendering: Consolatore
Transliteration: Consolatore
Doctrine: The Holy Spirit as Counselor
Rejected alternatives: Paraclito (bare transliteration; retained only as a supplementary gloss, not the running-text term)
Original: Παράκλητος
Category: Pneumatology

New term proper to John (Παράκλητος, 14:16,26; 15:26; 16:7). Both CEI and Riveduta traditions render this ‘Consolatore’, foregrounding comfort and under-representing the forensic-advocacy sense also present in the Greek, especially relevant at 16:7-11. Retain ‘Consolatore’ as running text but supply a mandatory translator/teacher note recovering the Advocate/Counselor sense. Mandatory theologian review at every occurrence.

Unity Of Believers

Approved rendering: uno
Transliteration: uno
Doctrine: Unity of Believers Patterned on the Trinity
Original: ἕν (of believers, patterned on the Father and Son)
Category: Church

New term proper to John (ἕν, of believers, 17:11,21-23). Extends the Critical-risk pattern of 10:30 into an ecclesial application; must retain the same weight of ontological/relational unity, not merely ‘in agreement’ or ‘cooperative’.

It Is Finished

Approved rendering: È compiuto
Transliteration: È compiuto
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection
Rejected alternatives: È finita (mere cessation, loses the completed-accomplishment sense)
Original: τετέλεσται
Category: Salvation

New term proper to John (τετέλεσται, 19:30). Commercial/legal ‘debt fully paid’ register; must retain a task fully and successfully accomplished, not a resigned ‘it’s over’. Climactic term for Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection; mandatory theologian review.

High Risk Terms

Grace

Approved rendering: grazia
Transliteration: grazia
Doctrine: Incarnation of the Word
Rejected alternatives: favore
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation

Inherited from Romans package; no risk change for John. ‘Grazia e verità’ (1:14,17) echoes the OT covenant formula (Exodus 34:6); the Tridentine-vs-sola-gratia freight documented in the Romans baseline applies identically here.

Sin

Approved rendering: peccato
Transliteration: peccato
Doctrine: Sin, Its Exposure, and the Need for Redemption
Original: ἁμαρτία
Category: Sin

Inherited from Romans package; no risk change. The ‘che peccato!’ (what a shame) colloquial-drift risk applies with equal or greater force in John, especially 1:29 (‘Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world’) and 16:8-9 (the Spirit convicts ‘concerning sin’).

Law

Approved rendering: legge
Transliteration: legge
Doctrine: The Jews and the Covenant People in John’s Narrative
Original: νόμος
Category: Covenant

Inherited from Romans package; no risk change. John’s usage (1:17,45; 7:19-51; 8:5,17; 10:34; 19:7) is mostly straightforward Torah reference; capitalize as ‘la Legge’ per baseline convention.

Resurrection

Approved rendering: risurrezione
Transliteration: risurrezione
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ and of Believers
Original: ἀνάστασις
Category: Eschatology

Inherited from Romans package (translation unchanged). Risk elevated from Medium (Romans) to High for John because it must be kept distinct from κοιμάομαι (‘dormire’, a death-euphemism implying temporariness) and from ἐγείρω applied to Lazarus (a temporary resuscitation, not the final resurrection) — a distinction John 11 and 20 make load-bearing in a way Romans does not.

Election

Approved rendering: elezione
Transliteration: elezione
Doctrine: Election/Effectual Calling
Original: ἐκλογή (implicit; cf. ἐκλέγομαι)
Category: Salvation

Inherited from Romans package; no risk change. John does not use the noun ἐκλογή but the underlying theology pervades 6:37,44,65; 10:26-29; 15:16,19; 17:6,9. Apply the baseline’s caution against importing either rigid Reformed monergism or unreflective Thomistic synergism where the text itself is silent; see new term ‘draw_effectual_calling’ below.

Glory

Approved rendering: gloria
Transliteration: gloria
Doctrine: The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word)
Original: δόξα
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package (translation unchanged). Risk elevated from Medium (Romans) to High for John because 17:5 (‘con la gloria che avevo presso di te prima che il mondo fosse’) makes an explicit pre-existence claim through this term, sharpening the baseline’s mild secular/liturgical mixed-resonance risk into a Deity-of-Christ-bearing risk.

Tabernacled

Approved rendering: venne ad abitare (in mezzo a noi)
Transliteration: venne ad abitare (in mezzo a noi)
Doctrine: Incarnation of the Word
Original: σκηνόω
Category: Christology

New term proper to John (1:14, σκηνόω). The Exodus tabernacle/Shekinah-glory allusion (Exodus 25-40) is lost in the plain Italian rendering; requires a mandatory explanatory cross-reference note given assumed low OT literacy across all reader groups.

Lamb Of God

Approved rendering: Agnello di Dio
Transliteration: Agnello di Dio
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection
Original: ἀμνὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ
Category: Salvation

New term proper to John (1:29,36). Recited at every Catholic Mass (‘Agnello di Dio, che togli i peccati del mondo’) immediately before Communion, giving exceptional liturgical familiarity but risking a purely ritual-formula hearing that under-recovers the Passover (Exodus 12)/Isaiah 53 substitutionary background. Teaching material must recover the OT typology explicitly.

Son Of Man

Approved rendering: Figlio dell’uomo
Transliteration: Figlio dell’uomo
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Original: υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
Category: Christology

New term proper to John (1:51; 3:13-14; 5:27; 6:27,53,62; 8:28; 9:35; 12:23,34; 13:31). The literal Italian sense (‘figlio di un uomo’) risks under-reading this as a mere humility title; the Daniel 7:13-14 background (an exalted, judging figure) must be supplied given assumed low OT literacy.

Believe

Approved rendering: credere (in)
Transliteration: credere (in)
Doctrine: Eternal Life through Faith in Christ
Rejected alternatives: credere che (bare propositional assent only)
Original: πιστεύω
Category: Faith

New term proper to John (πιστεύω, 98 occurrences; programmatic at 1:7,12; 3:12,15-18,36; 6:29,35,47; 11:25-27; 20:31). Must be rendered ‘credere in’ (trust-union) wherever the Greek uses πιστεύω εἰς, never merely ‘credere che’. Verb-form counterpart to baseline noun ‘fede’.

Perish

Approved rendering: perire
Transliteration: perire
Doctrine: Judgment and Belief/Unbelief
Rejected alternatives: perdersi (get lost — implies accidental, reversible, non-culpable state)
Original: ἀπόλλυμι
Category: Salvation

New term proper to John (ἀπόλλυμι, 3:16; 6:27,39; 10:10,28; 17:12; 18:9). Must use ‘perire’, never ‘perdersi’, to preserve real, culpable, final judgment as the alternative to eternal life.

World

Approved rendering: mondo
Transliteration: mondo
Doctrine: God’s Love for the World
Original: κόσμος
Category: Salvation

New term proper to John (κόσμος, throughout, esp. 1:9-10,29; 3:16-17,19; 12:31; 15:18-19; 16:33; 17:14-16). Dual valence (expansive love-object at 3:16 vs. God-opposing world-system at 12:31, 15:18-19) must be tracked per occurrence, not flattened either direction.

Judgment

Approved rendering: giudicare / giudizio
Transliteration: giudicare / giudizio
Doctrine: Judgment and Belief/Unbelief
Original: κρίνω / κρίσις / κρίμα
Category: Eschatology

New term proper to John (κρίνω/κρίσις/κρίμα, 3:17-19; 5:22-30; 9:39; 12:31,47-48; 16:8,11). Everyday Italian idiom ‘a mio giudizio’ (in my opinion) risks reducing an objective divine verdict to subjective opinion; the perfect tense of ‘already condemned’ (3:18) must retain settled, present-tense force.

Eternal Life

Approved rendering: vita eterna
Transliteration: vita eterna
Doctrine: Eternal Life through Faith in Christ
Original: ζωὴ αἰώνιος
Category: Salvation

New term proper to John (ζωὴ αἰώνιος, 3:15-16,36; 4:14,36; 5:24,39; 6:27,40,47,54,68; 10:28; 12:25,50; 17:2-3). Everyday Italian usage risks flattening to a purely future afterlife concept, losing John’s present, relational sense explicitly defined at 17:3; teach 3:15-16,36 alongside 17:3.

Give Life

Approved rendering: dare la vita / far vivere
Transliteration: dare la vita / far vivere
Doctrine: Unity of the Father and the Son
Original: ζωοποιέω
Category: Christology

New term proper to John (ζωοποιέω, 5:21; 6:63). Must convey a shared divine prerogative between Father and Son, not a generic healing ability.

Bread Of Life

Approved rendering: pane della vita
Transliteration: pane della vita
Doctrine: The Seven ‘I Am’ Statements
Original: ἄρτος τῆς ζωῆς
Category: Christology

New term proper to John (ἄρτος τῆς ζωῆς, 6:35,48,51). First of the seven ‘I am’ statements; requires supplied Exodus 16 manna-typology background given assumed low OT literacy.

Flesh And Blood

Approved rendering: carne e sangue
Transliteration: carne e sangue
Doctrine: Sacramental Symbolism: Water, Flesh/Blood, and Blood/Water
Original: σὰρξ καὶ αἷμα
Category: Salvation

New term proper to John (σὰρξ καὶ αἷμα, 6:51-58). Catholic readers readily hear this through transubstantiation/Eucharistic theology; Waldensian/evangelical tradition reads it symbolically, pointing to the cross. Mirrors the baseline’s ‘comunione’ flashpoint in Romans; route together with ‘born_of_water_and_spirit’ and ‘blood_and_water’ as one reviewed family.

Draw Effectual Calling

Approved rendering: attirare / trarre
Transliteration: attirare / trarre
Doctrine: Election/Effectual Calling
Original: ἑλκύω
Category: Salvation

New term proper to John (ἑλκύω, 6:44; 12:32). Effective, decisive drawing, not mere invitation. Connects to the baseline’s ‘election’ entry (Thomistic-synergistic vs. Reformed-monergistic tension); do not resolve the theological debate silently in the Italian rendering.

Good Shepherd

Approved rendering: il buon pastore
Transliteration: il buon pastore
Doctrine: The Seven ‘I Am’ Statements
Original: ποιμὴν ὁ καλός
Category: Christology

New term proper to John (ποιμὴν ὁ καλός, 10:11,14). Self-revelatory I AM-adjacent title drawing on Ezekiel 34/Psalm 23; OT shepherd-imagery background required for full comprehension.

Lay Down Life

Approved rendering: dare la vita (per le pecore)
Transliteration: dare la vita (per le pecore)
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection
Original: τίθημι τὴν ψυχήν
Category: Salvation

New term proper to John (τίθημι τὴν ψυχήν, 10:11,15,17-18; 15:13). Voluntary, purposeful self-sacrifice; must retain both the voluntary self-giving and the resurrection-authority clause (10:18) together.

Glorify

Approved rendering: glorificare
Transliteration: glorificare
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection
Original: δοξάζω
Category: Christology

New term proper to John (δοξάζω, 7:39; 8:54; 11:4; 12:16,23,28; 13:31-32; 14:13; 15:8; 16:14; 17:1,4-5,10). Must retain the paradox that the cross itself, not only the subsequent resurrection/ascension, is called ‘glorification’.

Spirit Of Truth

Approved rendering: Spirito di verità
Transliteration: Spirito di verità
Doctrine: The Holy Spirit as Counselor
Original: πνεῦμα τῆς ἀληθείας
Category: Pneumatology

New term proper to John (πνεῦμα τῆς ἀληθείας, 14:17; 15:26; 16:13). Identifies the Paraclete as the same Person named ‘Spirito Santo’ and ‘Consolatore’, not a fourth distinct figure.

Wrath Of God

Approved rendering: ira di Dio
Transliteration: ira di Dio
Doctrine: Judgment and Belief/Unbelief
Rejected alternatives: delusione di Dio (God’s disappointment — far too weak)
Original: ὀργὴ τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: God

New term proper to John (ὀργὴ τοῦ θεοῦ, 3:36). Real, personal, judicial response to unbelief, not capricious rage; must not be softened or paraphrased away.

Purpose That You May Believe

Approved rendering: perché crediate
Transliteration: perché crediate
Doctrine: Eternal Life through Faith in Christ
Original: ἵνα πιστεύ(σ)ητε
Category: Faith

New term proper to John (ἵνα πιστεύ(σ)ητε, 20:31). The Gospel’s own explicit purpose statement; should be taught as the interpretive key to the entire book’s use of πιστεύω/‘credere in’, matching 3:12,15.

Worship

Approved rendering: adorare
Transliteration: adorare
Doctrine: True Worship in Spirit and Truth
Rejected alternatives: venerare (reserved in Italian Catholic theology for saints/Mary — a distinction, not a competing risk, here)
Original: προσκυνέω
Category: Worship

New term proper to John (προσκυνέω, 4:20-24; 9:38; 12:20). Already theologically precise in Italian via the Catholic latria/dulia distinction, a genuine asset; risk is mainly colloquial flattening to generic respect/admiration.

Medium Risk Terms

Father

Approved rendering: Padre
Transliteration: Padre
Doctrine: Unity of the Father and the Son
Original: πατήρ
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package; no risk change for John. John’s usage is thoroughly relational-Trinitarian (5:17-23; 10:30,38; 14:6-11; 17); the baseline’s minor priestly-title adjacency risk remains background only.

Faith

Approved rendering: fede
Transliteration: fede
Doctrine: Eternal Life through Faith in Christ
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith

Inherited from Romans package; no risk change. Occurs as a bare noun only rarely in John (20:27); the verb form πιστεύω (credere in) carries the far greater programmatic weight and is treated as a separate new High-risk term below.

Kingdom Of God

Approved rendering: Regno di Dio
Transliteration: Regno di Dio
Doctrine: The Kingdom of God as Not of This World
Original: βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Kingdom

Inherited from Romans package; no risk change. Only two occurrences outside the trial scene (3:3,5; 18:36, ‘il mio regno non è di questo mondo’), reinforcing the non-political sense already flagged in the baseline.

Messiah

Approved rendering: Messia
Transliteration: Messia
Doctrine: The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word)
Original: Χριστός / Μεσσίας
Category: Christology

Inherited from Romans package; no risk change. John explicitly glosses the transliterated ‘Messias’ with ‘Christos’ at 1:41 and 4:25; preserve this transliterate-then-gloss pattern in the Italian text (‘Messia’ — che significa Cristo).

Israel

Approved rendering: Israele
Transliteration: Israele
Doctrine: The Jews and the Covenant People in John’s Narrative
Original: Ἰσραήλ
Category: Covenant

Inherited from Romans package; no risk change. Contemporary Middle East political-conflation risk noted in the baseline applies unchanged; used in titles ‘teacher of Israel’ (3:10) and ‘King of Israel’ (1:49; 12:13).

Peace

Approved rendering: pace
Transliteration: pace
Doctrine: Christian Identity in Christ
Original: εἰρήνη
Category: Salvation

Inherited from Romans package (translation unchanged). Risk elevated from Low (Romans) to Medium for John because the risen Christ’s greeting ‘Pace a voi’ recurs three times in ch.20 (vv.19,21,26) and must be rendered identically each time for pastoral consistency; also 14:27, 16:33.

Sanctification

Approved rendering: santificazione
Transliteration: santificazione
Doctrine: Sanctification of Believers in the Truth
Original: ἁγιάζω
Category: Sanctification

Inherited from Romans package; no risk change. Concentrated in the High Priestly Prayer (17:17,19), tied explicitly to ‘the truth’/‘the Word’ rather than ritual purification.

Salvation

Approved rendering: salvezza
Transliteration: salvezza
Doctrine: God’s Love for the World
Original: σωτηρία / σῴζω / σωτήρ
Category: Salvation

Inherited from Romans package; no risk change. Present mainly through the verb σῴζω (3:17; 5:34; 10:9; 12:47) and the new compound title σωτήρ (‘Salvatore del mondo’, 4:42) rather than the abstract noun.

Light Darkness

Approved rendering: luce / tenebra(e)
Transliteration: luce / tenebra(e)
Doctrine: Judgment and Belief/Unbelief
Original: φῶς / σκότος (σκοτία)
Category: Salvation

New term proper to John (φῶς/σκότος, 1:4-9; 3:19-21; 8:12; 9:5; 12:35-36,46). Must retain the moral-spiritual allegiance freight, not flatten into a merely literary or epistemic metaphor.

Spirit Wind Wordplay

Approved rendering: Spirito / vento
Transliteration: Spirito soffia dove vuole (footnote required)
Doctrine: The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit
Original: πνεῦμα … πνεῖ
Category: Pneumatology

New term proper to John (3:8, πνεῦμα…πνεῖ). Untranslatable Greek wordplay: Italian ‘vento’ and ‘Spirito’ share no root. Render plainly (‘Lo Spirito soffia dove vuole’) with a mandatory explanatory footnote; do not force an artificial Italian pun. Translation-loss flag rather than a doctrinal-distortion risk per se.

Sign

Approved rendering: segno
Transliteration: segno
Doctrine: Signs and Belief
Rejected alternatives: miracolo (risks collapsing to mere wonder-display)
Original: σημεῖον
Category: Faith

New term proper to John (σημεῖον, 2:11,23; 3:2; 4:48,54; 6:2,14,26,30; 7:31; 9:16; 11:47; 12:18,37; 20:30). John’s distinctive signs theology: acts pointing beyond themselves to Jesus’ identity, per John’s own numbering and stated purpose (20:30-31).

Testimony

Approved rendering: testimoniare / testimonianza
Transliteration: testimoniare / testimonianza
Doctrine: Witness and Testimony to Christ
Original: μαρτυρέω / μαρτυρία
Category: Faith

New term proper to John (μαρτυρέω/μαρτυρία, 1:7-8,15,19,32,34; 3:11,26,28,32-33; 5:31-39; 8:13-18; 15:26-27; 19:35; 21:24). Italian’s legal-court connotation usefully reinforces John’s trial-motif but must not be reduced to merely legal-procedural without the divine-authority weight also present.

Truth

Approved rendering: verità
Transliteration: verità
Doctrine: The Holy Spirit as Counselor
Original: ἀλήθεια
Category: God

New term proper to John (ἀλήθεια, 1:14,17; 3:21; 4:23-24; 8:32,44; 14:6,17; 16:13; 17:17,19; 18:37-38). Italian ‘verità’ leans toward propositional/philosophical correspondence-truth; catechesis must reinforce the relational-revelatory Johannine sense (‘fare la verità’ = live authentically before God), distinct from Pilate’s skeptical usage at 18:37-38.

Flesh

Approved rendering: carne
Transliteration: carne
Doctrine: Incarnation of the Word
Original: σάρξ
Category: Christology

New term proper to John (σάρξ, 1:14; 3:6; 6:51-56,63; 8:15; 17:2). ‘Carne’ also denotes butcher’s meat and carries a secondary moral connotation via ‘carnale’ drawn from Pauline usage already active in this curriculum’s Romans baseline; John’s neutral/positive anthropological and incarnational sense must not be colored by that connotation.

The Hour

Approved rendering: l’ora
Transliteration: l’ora
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection
Original: ὥρα
Category: Christology

New term proper to John (ὥρα, 2:4; 7:30; 8:20; 12:23,27; 13:1; 17:1). Ordinary Italian ‘l’ora’ risks reading as generic clock-time; flag as a technical Johannine phrase for the divinely appointed moment of death-and-glorification.

Ruler Of This World

Approved rendering: il principe di questo mondo
Transliteration: il principe di questo mondo
Doctrine: Judgment and Belief/Unbelief
Original: ἄρχων τοῦ κόσμου τούτου
Category: Salvation

New term proper to John (ἄρχων τοῦ κόσμου τούτου, 12:31; 14:30; 16:11). Must be read as a real but already-judged, defeated usurper power, not a co-equal dualistic rival to God.

Abide

Approved rendering: rimanere
Transliteration: rimanere
Doctrine: Unity of Believers Patterned on the Trinity
Original: μένω
Category: Faith

New term proper to John (μένω, 6:56; 14:10,17; 15:4-10). Must convey durative, relational union, not mere physical presence or a temporary visit.

Vine And Branches

Approved rendering: la vite / il ramo (tralcio)
Transliteration: la vite / il ramo (tralcio)
Doctrine: Unity of Believers Patterned on the Trinity
Original: ἄμπελος / κλῆμα
Category: Church

New term proper to John (ἄμπελος/κλῆμα, 15:1-8). OT vine-as-Israel background (Psalm 80, Isaiah 5) reapplied to Christ requires supplied background.

Tribulation

Approved rendering: tribolazione
Transliteration: tribolazione
Doctrine: The World’s Hatred and the Disciples’ Victory
Original: θλῖψις
Category: Eschatology

New term proper to John (θλῖψις, 16:33). Stable term; note the pairing with the immediately following victory declaration.

Overcome

Approved rendering: vincere
Transliteration: vincere
Doctrine: The World’s Hatred and the Disciples’ Victory
Original: νικάω
Category: Eschatology

New term proper to John (νικάω, 16:33). Must preserve the present-tense confidence spoken by Jesus before the crucifixion has occurred, not softened into a merely future or hoped-for victory.

Blood And Water

Approved rendering: sangue e acqua
Transliteration: sangue e acqua
Doctrine: Sacramental Symbolism: Water, Flesh/Blood, and Blood/Water
Original: αἷμα καὶ ὕδωρ
Category: Salvation

New term proper to John (αἷμα καὶ ὕδωρ, 19:34). Same sacramental-symbolism sensitivity as 3:5 and 6:51-58; route together as one reviewed family; recommend restrained, non-adjudicating treatment in teaching notes.

Love

Approved rendering: amare
Transliteration: amare
Doctrine: The New Commandment of Mutual Love
Original: ἀγαπάω / φιλέω
Category: Faith

New term proper to John (ἀγαπάω/φιλέω, 3:16,19,35; 5:20; 11:3,5,36; 13:23; 15:9-17; 21:15-17). Italian’s single ‘amare’ collapses the Greek lexical variety; avoid overstating a rigid agape/lesser-love distinction not consistently supported by John’s own usage (both verbs describe the Father’s love for the Son at 3:35/5:20; ἀγαπάω itself describes sinful attachment to darkness at 3:19).

Put Out Of Synagogue

Approved rendering: espulso dalla sinagoga
Transliteration: espulso dalla sinagoga
Doctrine: The Jews and the Covenant People in John’s Narrative
Original: ἀποσυνάγωγος (concept)
Category: Covenant

New term proper to John (ἀποσυνάγωγος concept, 9:22,34; 12:42; 16:2). Requires historical-context framing to avoid either trivializing the cost of discipleship or feeding an anti-Judaic reading; handle alongside ‘the_jews’ guidance.

Send

Approved rendering: mandare / inviare
Transliteration: mandare / inviare
Doctrine: Divine Sending: Father to Son, Son to Disciples
Original: ἀποστέλλω
Category: Church

New term proper to John (ἀποστέλλω, 3:17,34; 5:36-38; 6:29,38-39,44,57; 7:29; 8:29,42; 10:36; 11:42; 17:3,8,18,21,23,25; 20:21). Must distinguish the unique, constitutive Father-to-Son sending from the derivative, commissioned Son-to-disciples sending at 20:21 (‘as the Father has sent me, I also send you’).

Living Water

Approved rendering: acqua viva
Transliteration: acqua viva
Doctrine: God’s Love for the World
Original: ὕδωρ ζῶν
Category: Salvation

New term proper to John (ὕδωρ ζῶν, 4:10-14; 7:38). Must retain the permanently life-giving/satisfying metaphor, not merely ‘fresh/flowing’ water.

Savior Of The World

Approved rendering: Salvatore del mondo
Transliteration: Salvatore del mondo
Doctrine: God’s Love for the World
Original: σωτὴρ τοῦ κόσμου
Category: Salvation

New term proper to John (σωτὴρ τοῦ κόσμου, 4:42). Universalizes the God’s-Love-for-the-World theme; combines with baseline ‘salvezza’ root.

Temple

Approved rendering: tempio
Transliteration: tempio
Doctrine: Incarnation of the Word
Original: ναός
Category: Christology

New term proper to John (ναός, 2:19-21, of Jesus’ body). Greek distinguishes ναός (inner sanctuary/here, the body) from ἱερόν (the wider temple precinct); a single Italian ‘tempio’ does not preserve this distinction, risking loss of the pointed body-as-temple identification. Requires a translator note.

Low Risk Terms

David

Approved rendering: Davide
Transliteration: Davide
Doctrine: The Jews and the Covenant People in John’s Narrative

Inherited from Romans package; no risk change. Standard proper name form; single occurrence context at 7:42.

Seed Of David

Approved rendering: discendente di Davide
Transliteration: discendente di Davide
Doctrine: The Jews and the Covenant People in John’s Narrative
Rejected alternatives: stirpe di Davide (literary but acceptable)
Original: σπέρμα Δαυίδ
Category: Covenant

Inherited from Romans package (translation unchanged). Risk reassessed from Medium (Romans) to Low for John: single occurrence (7:42), invoked as popular (and ironically already-fulfilled, unrecognized) messianic expectation, lower doctrinal load-bearing than in Romans 1:3.

Apostle

Approved rendering: apostolo
Transliteration: apostolo
Doctrine: Divine Sending: Father to Son, Son to Disciples
Original: ἀπόστολος
Category: Church

Inherited from Romans package; no risk change. The noun ἀπόστολος does not occur in John’s narrative proper; John prefers the sending verb ἀποστέλλω (see new term ‘send’ below). Retained for cross-curriculum consistency only; not independently load-bearing in this book.

New Commandment

Approved rendering: comandamento nuovo
Transliteration: comandamento nuovo
Doctrine: The New Commandment of Mutual Love
Original: ἐντολὴ καινή
Category: Church

New term proper to John (ἐντολὴ καινή, 13:34-35; 15:12-17). Stable, low-risk vocabulary; only minor risk is losing the Christological grounding (‘as I have loved you’) through loose paraphrase.
