Core Glossary
Core Glossary: Colossians (English → Dutch)
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing theological term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, covering the core passage (Colossians 1:15–20) and all four chapters of Colossians. Terms marked [TM] are already fixed in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json and must be reused exactly, without alteration. New terms proposed for this curriculum are marked [NEW] and should be added to translation memory (with version increment) before Phase 2 processing begins, per the Phase 2 AI Translation Requirements’ “New Term” protocol.
Risk tiers follow the baseline framework: Critical (human theologian review, every occurrence), High (human theologian review), Medium (native speaker review recommended), Low (automated review sufficient).
Christology / Supremacy of Christ
| Term | Status | Original | Transliteration | Dutch Rendering | Risk | Key Passages | Grounded Risk Reason |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| image | [NEW] | εἰκών | eikōn | beeld | Critical | 1:15 | Collides directly with Dutch Reformed anti-image tradition (1566 Beeldenstorm; Heidelberg Catechism Q&A 96–98 forbidding images of God); readers must understand Christ is God’s own self-revelation, not a crafted icon subject to the historic prohibition. |
| firstborn | [NEW] | πρωτότοκος | prōtotokos | eerstgeborene | Critical | 1:15, 1:18 | Actively cited by Jehovah’s Witnesses (Jehovah’s Getuigen, with a visible Dutch presence) to argue Christ was created; must be glossed as a title of rank/heirship, not origin. |
| invisible (God) | [NEW] | ἀόρατος | aoratos | onzichtbaar | Medium | 1:15, 1:16 | Risk of secular-naturalist flattening (“unseen” = “nonexistent”); pairs with the “God” baseline secularization note. |
| creation / created | [NEW] | κτίσις / κτίζω | ktisis / ktizō | schepping / geschapen | High | 1:15, 1:16, 1:23; 3:10 (Schepper) | Directly tied to the firstborn/creation distinction; must keep Christ ontologically outside the class of created things. |
| thrones, dominions, rulers, authorities | [NEW] | θρόνοι, κυριότητες, ἀρχαί, ἐξουσίαι | thronoi, kyriotētes, archai, exousiai | tronen, heerschappijen, overheden en machten | High | 1:16, 2:10, 2:15 | ”Overheden en machten” is identical to ordinary Dutch civil-government vocabulary; secular readers risk flattening spiritual powers into merely political institutions. |
| holds together / sustains | [NEW] | συνίστημι (συνέστηκεν) | synistēmi (synestēken) | houdt samen / bestaat in Hem | High | 1:17 | Must convey active, ongoing sustaining, not a passive deist “started and left” reading. |
| head | [NEW] | κεφαλή | kephalē | hoofd | High | 1:18, 2:10, 2:19 | Same word governs both cosmic/ecclesial headship (Christ over church/powers) and household headship debates elsewhere in the NT corpus; requires context-sensitive handling each occurrence. |
| body | [NEW] | σῶμα | sōma | lichaam | High | 1:18, 1:22, 1:24, 2:9 (adv.), 2:19, 3:15 | Spans literal physical body (1:22, guarding real humanity/death of Christ), the church as corporate body, and the “bodily” adverb in 2:9; disambiguation required per occurrence. |
| church (cosmic/universal sense) | [NEW usage of TM term] | ἐκκλησία | ekklēsia | [TM] gemeente — flagged tension | High | 1:18, 1:24 (cosmic); 4:15–16 (local) | Baseline “gemeente” was chosen for the local-congregation sense; Colossians 1:18/1:24 use the cosmic, universal church, creating a genuine per-occurrence judgment call not resolved by the baseline rule alone. |
| beginning | [NEW] | ἀρχή | archē | begin / oorsprong | Medium | 1:18 | Distinguish from “ἀρχαί” (rulers) in 1:16 — same root, different sense; disambiguate in translator notes. |
| preeminent | [NEW] | πρωτεύων | prōteuōn | de eerste plaats innemend | Medium | 1:18 | Summative supremacy claim; low ambiguity but must not be softened to “important” or “prominent.” |
| fullness | [NEW] | πλήρωμα | plērōma | volheid | Critical | 1:19, 2:9 | Technical term for the Colossian false teachers’ fragmented divine “fullness”; must convey Christ possesses all of it, exclusively. |
| dwell | [NEW] | κατοικέω | katoikeō | wonen | High | 1:19 | Must convey permanent residence, not temporary visitation of divine power. |
| deity / Godhead | [NEW] | θεότης | theotēs | Godheid | Critical | 2:9 | Distinct from “goddelijke natuur/aard” (godlike quality); conveys Christ’s actual divine essence. |
| bodily | [NEW] | σωματικῶς | sōmatikōs | lichamelijk | Critical | 2:9 | Anchors the doctrine “Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily”; directly refutes docetic/Gnostic denial of real physical incarnation. |
| Son (of his love) | [NEW idiom; links to TM] | υἱὸς τῆς ἀγάπης αὐτοῦ | huios tēs agapēs autou | Zijn geliefde Zoon | Critical | 1:13 | Hebraic idiom for Christ’s unique divine Sonship; carries the same doctrinal weight as [TM] Zoon van God though the surface phrase differs. |
Salvation / Atonement
| Term | Status | Original | Transliteration | Dutch Rendering | Risk | Key Passages | Grounded Risk Reason |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| reconcile / reconciliation | [NEW] | ἀποκαταλλάσσω | apokatallassō | verzoenen / verzoening | Critical | 1:20, 1:21–22 | Cosmic scope (“all things”) risks a universalist misreading in a Dutch mainline Protestant (PKN) climate where universalist currents exist alongside orthodox streams; must retain the distinction between reconciling believers and subjugating hostile powers. |
| blood of the cross | [NEW] | αἷμα τοῦ σταυροῦ | haima tou staurou | het bloed van het kruis | Critical | 1:20 | Atoning/forensic force must not be diluted into generic sacrificial language, parallel to the baseline’s flagging of Romans 3:25. |
| redemption | [NEW] | ἀπολύτρωσις | apolytrōsis | verlossing | High | 1:14 | Distinct ransom-metaphor word; must NOT be replaced by [TM] behoud (the curriculum’s reserved general salvation register term) though the two are conceptually adjacent. |
| forgiveness | [NEW] | ἄφεσις | aphesis | vergeving | Medium | 1:14, 3:13 | Standard term; risk is losing the “cancellation of debt” legal nuance if rendered too generically. |
| certificate of debt | [NEW] | χειρόγραφον | cheirographon | schuldbrief | High | 2:14 | Must retain the legal-debt-record sense; risk of collapsing into simple “de Wet” (Mosaic Law) and losing the broader debt-of-trespasses meaning. |
| decrees / ordinances | [NEW] | δόγμα | dogma | geboden / verordeningen | Medium | 2:14, 2:20 | Modern Dutch “dogma” carries a pejorative rigid-doctrinaire connotation not present in the source term here. |
| what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions | [NEW] | τὰ ὑστερήματα τῶν θλίψεων τοῦ Χριστοῦ | ta hysterēmata tōn thlipseōn tou Christou | wat aan de verdrukkingen van Christus ontbreekt | Critical | 1:24 | Must never be read as implying insufficiency in Christ’s atoning cross-work (1:20); refers to the church’s ongoing corporate suffering, not a deficient atonement. |
| authority/dominion of darkness | [NEW] | ἐξουσία τοῦ σκότους | exousia tou skotous | de macht van de duisternis | High | 1:13 | Risk of dualistic misreading as a co-equal cosmic rival power rather than a real but defeated, subordinate power. |
| sin | [TM] | ἁμαρτία | hamartia | [TM] zonde | High | 1:14 | Reuse baseline note: colloquial Dutch “pity/waste” drift risks undercutting the moral-transgression sense. |
Church, Union with Christ, and Sanctification
| Term | Status | Original | Transliteration | Dutch Rendering | Risk | Key Passages | Grounded Risk Reason |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| buried with / raised with | [NEW] | συνθάπτω / συνεγείρω | synthaptō / synegeirō | met [Hem] begraven / met [Hem] opgewekt | High | 2:12, 3:1 | Core Union-with-Christ vocabulary; must retain the sense of real spiritual identification with Christ’s own death and resurrection, not mere metaphor for moral improvement. |
| hidden (with Christ in God) | [NEW] | κρύπτω | kryptō | verborgen | Medium | 3:3 | Connotes secure keeping, not concealment/loss; assurance-adjacent term. |
| old self / old man | [NEW] | παλαιὸς ἄνθρωπος | palaios anthrōpos | de oude mens | High | 3:9 | Risk of collapsing into generic secular self-help “personal growth” language rather than a definitive, Spirit-wrought change of fundamental identity in union with Christ. |
| new self / new man | [NEW] | νέος / καινὸς ἄνθρωπος | neos / kainos anthrōpos | de nieuwe mens | High | 3:10 | Same risk as above, inverse direction; must convey a decisively new, Christ-shaped identity, not incremental self-improvement. |
| put off / put on | [NEW] | ἀπεκδύομαι / ἐνδύω | apekdyomai / endyō | afleggen/uittrekken / aandoen | High | 3:9, 3:12, 3:14 | Clothing metaphor for decisive moral-spiritual transformation; must not read as superficial behavioral adjustment. |
| image of the Creator | [NEW] | εἰκὼν τοῦ κτίσαντος | eikōn tou ktisantos | beeld van de Schepper | High | 3:10 | Deliberately echoes Christ’s own status as “the image of God” (1:15); disambiguate the two distinct (though related) senses of eikōn in translator notes. |
| elect / chosen | [NEW; related to TM] | ἐκλεκτοί | eklektoi | uitverkorenen | High | 3:12 | Related to baseline verkiezing (election); carries the same Canons-of-Dort-adjacent doctrinal weight in Dutch Reformed reception. |
| knowledge / full knowledge | [NEW] | ἐπίγνωσις / γνῶσις | epignōsis / gnōsis | kennis / volle kennis | High | 1:9-10, 2:2-3, 3:10 | Colossae’s false teachers claimed an elite esoteric gnōsis; Paul insists true knowledge of Christ is available to all believers — relevant also to contemporary Dutch New Age/“spiritual but not religious” culture’s own gnosis-flavored spirituality market. |
| mystery | [NEW] | μυστήριον | mystērion | geheimenis (alt. verborgenheid) | High | 1:26-27, 2:2, 4:3 | Must not be read as an esoteric secret reserved for initiates (the false teachers’ own claim); it is now openly revealed to all. |
| circumcision | [NEW] | περιτομή | peritomē | besnijdenis | Medium | 2:11 | Low OT background literacy per baseline notes; used metaphorically here, must not imply an ongoing literal requirement. |
| bowels of compassion | [NEW] | σπλάγχνα οἰκτιρμοῦ | splanchna oiktirmou | innige/hartelijke ontferming | Medium | 3:12 | Hebraic anatomical idiom requires natural Dutch equivalent conveying emotional depth. |
| bond of perfection | [NEW] | σύνδεσμος τῆς τελειότητος | syndesmos tēs teleiotētos | band der volmaaktheid | Medium | 3:14 | Anatomical/ligament metaphor for love’s unifying function among the virtues. |
| psalms, hymns, spiritual songs | [NEW] | ψαλμοί, ὕμνοι, ᾠδαὶ πνευματικαί | psalmoi, hymnoi, ōdai pneumatikai | psalmen, lofzangen en geestelijke liederen | Medium | 3:16 | Live Dutch Reformed denominational debate (psalm-exclusivity in conservative “bevindelijk gereformeerd” circles vs. hymn-inclusive mainstream) over sung-worship content. |
False Teaching / Syncretism
| Term | Status | Original | Transliteration | Dutch Rendering | Risk | Key Passages | Grounded Risk Reason |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| philosophy | [NEW] | φιλοσοφία | philosophia | filosofie / wijsbegeerte | Medium | 2:8 | Must be understood as condemning the specific Colossian syncretistic system, not reasoned thought generally, for a highly educated secular Dutch readership. |
| tradition | [NEW] | παράδοσις | paradosis | overlevering / traditie | High | 2:8 | Live Reformation-era Dutch fault line: Reformed sola scriptura rejection of tradition-as-co-authority vs. Catholic minority’s positive view of Heilige Overlevering; must not be read as a blanket condemnation of all church tradition. |
| elemental things of the world | [NEW] | στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου | stoicheia tou kosmou | de machten/grondbeginselen van deze wereld | High | 2:8, 2:20 | Genuinely ambiguous Greek term between “basic principles” and “personal cosmic powers”; flattening risks losing the personal-power sense the context (2:15, 2:20) supports. |
| worship of angels | [NEW] | θρησκεία τῶν ἀγγέλων | thrēskeia tōn angelōn | engelenverering | High | 2:18 | Contemporary Dutch New Age angel-devotion trends risk a positive misreading of a practice Paul explicitly condemns. |
| self-made religion | [NEW] | ἐθελοθρησκία | ethelothrēskia | eigenwillige godsdienst | Medium | 2:23 | Rare compound requiring natural Dutch paraphrase; captures humanly invented (not God-commanded) religious devotion. |
| shadow / substance | [NEW] | σκιά / σῶμα | skia / sōma | schaduw / de werkelijkheid zelf | Medium | 2:17 | OT typological pattern; requires explicit note given generally low OT literacy among Dutch readers per baseline observation. |
| triumph over | [NEW] | θριαμβεύω | thriambeuō | openlijk overwinnen / zegevierend ten toon stellen | Medium | 2:15 | Roman military-triumph imagery unfamiliar to most modern readers without explanatory note. |
Household Codes
| Term | Status | Original | Transliteration | Dutch Rendering | Risk | Key Passages | Grounded Risk Reason |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| submit / be subject | [NEW] | ὑποτάσσω | hypotassō | onderdanig zijn / zich schikken naar | Critical | 3:18 | Household-code language set against one of Europe’s most gender-egalitarian modern societies; must be framed with the passage’s own paired, mutual, Christ-centered structure (wives submit / husbands love, 3:18-19) without softening the text or permitting a reading that licenses domination or abuse. |
| slaves, obey / masters | [NEW] | δοῦλοι ὑπακούετε / κύριοι | douloi hypakouete / kyrioi | slaven, wees gehoorzaam / heren | Critical | 3:22–4:1 | The single most culturally sensitive passage in this curriculum for a Dutch audience: the Netherlands’ own VOC/WIC colonial slave-trade history, King Willem-Alexander’s 2022–2023 formal national apology, and ongoing public reckoning (Keti Koti) require careful framing that distinguishes Paul’s pastoral point from any implied endorsement of the institution. |
| justice and fairness (masters’ obligation) | [NEW] | τὸ δίκαιον καὶ τὴν ἰσότητα | to dikaion kai tēn isotēta | rechtvaardigheid en gelijkheid/billijkheid | Critical | 4:1 | Direct continuation of the slavery-passage sensitivity above; the moral check on masters must be rendered with full force, not minimized. |
| children, obey | [NEW] | τέκνα ὑπακούετε | tekna hypakouete | kinderen, wees gehoorzaam | Medium | 3:20 | Standard filial-obedience ethic; lower risk than spousal/slavery instructions but still context-sensitive. |
| fathers, do not provoke | [NEW] | πατέρες μὴ ἐρεθίζετε | pateres mē erethizete | vaders, prikkel niet tot toorn | Medium | 3:21 | Real check on parental authority; must not be lost in translation as a minor aside. |
| eye-service | [NEW] | ὀφθαλμοδουλία | ophthalmodoulia | ogendienst | Low | 3:22 | Transparent, low-risk compound; established Statenvertaling-era Dutch equivalent exists. |

| Low | 8 | Automated review |
Note on full-book coverage: All four chapters of Colossians have been reviewed. Chapter 4 (4:2–18) introduces no major new doctrinal terms beyond the completion of the Household Codes (4:1) and is explicitly noted as reusing established mission, prayer, and greeting vocabulary from Chapters 1–3 and the Romans baseline.
Critical Risk Terms
Son Of God
Approved rendering: Zoon van God
Transliteration: Zoon van God
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Original: υἱὸς θεοῦ / υἱὸς τῆς ἀγάπης αὐτοῦ
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package (doctrinal concept). In Colossians expressed via the Hebraic idiom ‘Zijn geliefde Zoon’ (1:13); see ‘beloved_son’ entry below. Full phrase required, conveying eternal, unique Sonship.
Election
Approved rendering: verkiezing
Transliteration: verkiezing
Doctrine: Effectual Calling
Inherited from Romans package. Background doctrinal term for Colossians 3:12’s ‘uitverkorenen’ (see ‘elect_chosen’ entry below, a related but distinct word). Always distinguish God’s sovereign, unconditional choice from a democratic vote.
Image Of God
Approved rendering: beeld
Transliteration: beeld
Doctrine: The Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ over Creation
Rejected alternatives: afbeelding (implies a crafted representation, colliding with the historic Reformed prohibition), icoon (Orthodox/Catholic devotional register, not the established Dutch Bible-translation term)
Original: εἰκών
Category: Christology
Colossians 1:15. CRITICAL: collides with the 1566 Beeldenstorm and Heidelberg Catechism Q&A 96-98’s prohibition of images of God. Christ himself IS the ‘Beeld’ — God’s own self-revelation — not an object subject to the historic prohibition. Requires mandatory translator note at every occurrence.
Firstborn
Approved rendering: eerstgeborene
Transliteration: eerstgeborene
Doctrine: The Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ over Creation
Rejected alternatives: eerst geschapene (implies temporal origin — the exact reading exploited by Jehovah’s Getuigen)
Original: πρωτότοκος
Category: Christology
Colossians 1:15, 1:18. CRITICAL: actively cited by the Dutch Jehovah’s Getuigen (visible publishing and door-to-door presence) to argue Christ was God’s first creation. Must always be glossed as rank/heirship (cf. Psalm 89:27’s use for David), never origin-in-time.
Fullness
Approved rendering: volheid
Transliteration: volheid
Doctrine: Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Original: πλήρωμα
Category: Christology
Colossians 1:19, 2:9. Technical term answering the Colossian false teachers’ fragmented divine ‘fullness’; must always convey Christ possesses ALL of it, exclusively. Never let stand as a bare abstract noun without context.
Deity Godhead
Approved rendering: Godheid
Transliteration: Godheid
Doctrine: Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Rejected alternatives: goddelijke natuur (weakens to a possessed divine quality — the documented Dutch NWT/Jehovah’s Getuigen strategy), goddelijke hoedanigheid, goddelijkheid
Original: θεότης
Category: Christology
Colossians 2:9. Must convey Christ’s actual, undivided divine essence, never a merely godlike quality. NEVER accept the forbidden substitutions listed.
Bodily
Approved rendering: lichamelijk
Transliteration: lichamelijk
Doctrine: Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Rejected alternatives: symbolisch, geestelijk (loses the concrete physical claim)
Original: σωματικῶς
Category: Christology
Colossians 2:9. Anchors the curriculum’s core doctrine; directly refutes docetic/Gnostic denial of real incarnation. Always translate as an inseparable triad with ‘volheid’ and ‘Godheid’.
Beloved Son
Approved rendering: Zijn geliefde Zoon
Transliteration: Zijn geliefde Zoon
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: zoon van Zijn liefde (unnatural word-for-word calque)
Original: υἱὸς τῆς ἀγάπης αὐτοῦ
Category: Christology
Colossians 1:13. Hebraic idiom carrying the same doctrinal weight as the baseline’s fixed ‘Zoon van God’; render idiomatically, not literally.
Reconciliation
Approved rendering: verzoenen / verzoening
Transliteration: verzoenen / verzoening
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Original: ἀποκαταλλάσσω
Category: Salvation
Colossians 1:20-22. Cosmic scope (‘alle dingen’) risks a universalist misreading in the Dutch mainline Protestant (PKN) climate; must retain the distinction between reconciling believers and subjugating/pacifying hostile powers (cf. 2:15).
Blood Of The Cross
Approved rendering: het bloed van het kruis
Transliteration: het bloed van het kruis
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Rejected alternatives: offerdood (too generic, loses the specific blood/cross imagery)
Original: αἷμα τοῦ σταυροῦ
Category: Salvation
Colossians 1:20. Must not be diluted into generic sacrificial-death language, paralleling the baseline’s flagging of Romans 3:25 atonement language for mandatory theologian review.
Sufferings Lacking
Approved rendering: wat aan de verdrukkingen van Christus ontbreekt
Transliteration: wat aan de verdrukkingen van Christus ontbreekt
Doctrine: Paul’s Suffering for the Church
Rejected alternatives: wat ontbreekt aan Christus’ lijden (ambiguous phrasing that could imply insufficiency of the atonement)
Original: τὰ ὑστερήματα τῶν θλίψεων τοῦ Χριστοῦ
Category: Church
Colossians 1:24. One of the most theologically delicate phrases in the letter; must never be read as implying the cross-work of 1:20 was insufficient. Requires an explicit clarifying note in all teaching material distinguishing the church’s ongoing corporate suffering from Christ’s finished atonement.
Submit Household
Approved rendering: onderdanig zijn / zich schikken naar
Transliteration: onderdanig zijn / zich schikken naar
Doctrine: Household Codes
Original: ὑποτάσσω
Category: Household Codes
Colossians 3:18. Set against one of Europe’s most gender-egalitarian modern societies; must always be framed with the passage’s own paired, mutual, Christ-centered structure (wives submit / husbands love, 3:18-19) without softening the text or licensing a reading that permits domination or abuse.
Slaves Masters
Approved rendering: slaven, wees gehoorzaam / heren
Transliteration: slaven, wees gehoorzaam / heren
Doctrine: Household Codes
Original: δοῦλοι ὑπακούετε / κύριοι
Category: Household Codes
Colossians 3:22-4:1. The single most culturally sensitive passage in this curriculum for Dutch readers: the Netherlands’ VOC/WIC transatlantic and colonial slave-trade history, King Willem-Alexander’s 2022-2023 formal national apology, and the ongoing Keti Koti commemoration require careful framing distinguishing Paul’s pastoral-theological point from any implied endorsement of the institution itself.
Justice Fairness
Approved rendering: rechtvaardigheid en gelijkheid/billijkheid
Transliteration: rechtvaardigheid en gelijkheid/billijkheid
Doctrine: Household Codes
Original: τὸ δίκαιον καὶ τὴν ἰσότητα
Category: Household Codes
Colossians 4:1. Direct continuation of the slavery-passage sensitivity; the moral check on masters’ power (accountable to a heavenly Master) must be rendered with full force, not minimized as a mere courtesy.
High Risk Terms
Grace
Approved rendering: genade
Transliteration: genade
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: gunst
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Reused exactly in Colossians 1:2, 1:6, 3:16, 4:6, 4:18. Must always convey grace apart from human cooperation, consistent with the Synod of Dordrecht anti-Remonstrant note.
Saints
Approved rendering: heiligen
Transliteration: heiligen
Doctrine: Sainthood of Believers
Original: ἅγιοι
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. Reused exactly in Colossians 1:2, 1:4, 1:12, 1:26, 3:12. Catholic canonized-saint reading vs. Reformed all-believers reading follows the historic Catholic-south/Reformed-north divide; general-audience material should clarify ‘alle gelovigen’.
Church
Approved rendering: gemeente
Transliteration: gemeente
Doctrine: Christ as Head of the Church
Rejected alternatives: kerk (institution-default)
Original: ἐκκλησία
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package for the LOCAL congregation sense (Colossians 4:15-16, ‘de gemeente in haar huis’). Colossians 1:18 and 1:24 use ekklesia in a distinct COSMIC/UNIVERSAL sense not resolved by the baseline rule alone; see ‘church_cosmic’ entry below for that usage, which requires a qualifying phrase rather than the bare term.
Lord
Approved rendering: Heer
Transliteration: Heer
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: meester
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Reused across Colossians 1:3, 1:10, 2:6, 3:13, 3:16-18, 3:20, 3:22-24, 4:1, 4:7, 4:17. Colossians additionally requires distinguishing the capitalized divine title ‘Heer’ from the ordinary lower-case ‘heer’/‘heren’ (human master) used of slaveholders in 3:22-4:1; capitalization convention carries doctrinal weight here.
Sin
Approved rendering: zonde
Transliteration: zonde
Doctrine: Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins
Original: ἁμαρτία
Category: Sin
Inherited from Romans package. Reused in Colossians 1:14. HIGH RISK per baseline: the dominant colloquial Dutch sense of ‘zonde’ as ‘a pity/waste’ risks undercutting the moral-transgression sense on which ‘vergeving van zonden’ depends.
Law
Approved rendering: wet
Transliteration: wet
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Inherited from Romans package. Referenced contrastively in Colossians 2:14 notes: ‘schuldbrief’ (certificate of debt) must NOT be collapsed into simple ‘de Wet’, which would lose the broader debt-of-trespasses sense the Greek cheirographon carries.
Creation
Approved rendering: schepping / geschapen
Transliteration: schepping / geschapen
Doctrine: The Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ over Creation
Original: κτίσις / κτίζω
Category: Christology
Colossians 1:15, 1:16, 1:23; 3:10 (‘Schepper’). Must keep Christ ontologically outside the class of created things, compounding the firstborn/rank distinction above.
Cosmic Powers
Approved rendering: tronen, heerschappijen, overheden en machten
Transliteration: tronen, heerschappijen, overheden en machten
Doctrine: The Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ over Creation
Rejected alternatives: machten (bare, loses the fourfold enumeration of ranked spiritual powers)
Original: θρόνοι, κυριότητες, ἀρχαί, ἐξουσίαι
Category: Christology
Colossians 1:16, 2:10, 2:15. ‘Overheden en machten’ is identical to ordinary Dutch civil-government vocabulary; a highly secularized readership risks flattening real spiritual powers into merely political institutions.
Sustains Creation
Approved rendering: houdt samen / bestaat in Hem
Transliteration: houdt samen / bestaat in Hem
Doctrine: The Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ over Creation
Rejected alternatives: bestaat (too passive alone, invites a deist reading)
Original: συνίστημι (συνέστηκεν)
Category: Christology
Colossians 1:17. Must convey active, ongoing sustaining, not a passive deist ‘started it and left it’ claim.
Head
Approved rendering: hoofd
Transliteration: hoofd
Doctrine: Christ as Head of the Church
Original: κεφαλή
Category: Church
Colossians 1:18, 2:10, 2:19. The same word governs cosmic/ecclesial headship and (elsewhere in the NT corpus) household headship; each occurrence requires context-sensitive disambiguation.
Body
Approved rendering: lichaam
Transliteration: lichaam
Doctrine: Christ as Head of the Church
Original: σῶμα
Category: Church
Colossians 1:18, 1:24, 2:9 (adverbial), 2:19, 3:15. Spans the church as corporate body and (see ‘body_of_flesh’ entry) Christ’s own literal physical body; disambiguate per occurrence.
Church Cosmic
Approved rendering: gemeente (met verduidelijkende toevoeging)
Transliteration: gemeente

Rejected alternatives: kerk (institutional default, risks the opposite distortion)
Original: ἐκκλησία
Category: Church
Colossians 1:18, 1:24. The COSMIC/UNIVERSAL sense of ekklesia, distinct from the local-congregation sense of the baseline ‘church’ entry (used correctly at 4:15-16). Recommend a qualifying phrase, e.g. ‘de gemeente, het lichaam van Christus, wereldwijd’, judged per occurrence rather than resolved by a single fixed override.

Transliteration: de macht van de duisternis
Doctrine: Authority of Darkness and Spiritual Powers
Original: ἐξουσία τοῦ σκότους

Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Rejected alternatives: je oude ik (secular self-help register)

Approved rendering: beeld van de Schepper
Transliteration: beeld van de Schepper
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Original: εἰκὼν τοῦ κτίσαντος
Category: Sanctification
Colossians 3:10. Deliberately echoes Christ’s own status as ‘de Beeld van God’ (1:15) but is theologically distinct; disambiguate the two senses of ‘beeld’ in translator notes to avoid conflating Christ’s unique divine image-status with restored human image-bearing.

Approved rendering: overlevering / traditie
Transliteration: overlevering / traditie
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Original: παράδοσις
Category: False Teaching
