CRITICAL: always use the compound 聖霊; NEVER use 霊 (rei) alone. Japan’s animistic spirit-world remains culturally vivid even among secular Japanese — ancestral spirits honored at Obon, nature spirits, and an entire mainstream horror/pop-culture genre built around 幽霊 (yuurei, ghosts) and 妖怪 (yōkai, folk spirit-monsters). Without the 聖 qualifier, 霊 risks being heard as one more entity in this vast folk spirit-world rather than the third Person of the Trinity.
