Jesus
イエス is the modern Protestant/ecumenical standard, phonetically close to Greek/English. Historical note: early Japanese Catholic Kirishitan-era Bibles (16th century, following Francis Xavier’s 1549 mission) used ゼズス (Jezusu), a Portuguese-derived transliteration reflecting Japan’s first Christian contact via Portuguese Jesuits. Modern curriculum materials should use イエス exclusively but may reference this history when discussing Japan’s Christian heritage.
