Core Glossary
Core Glossary — Colossians (English → Malay)
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing theological term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, across all four chapters of Colossians. Terms already present in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json are marked [REUSED] and MUST use the exact recorded Malay rendering; the baseline entry governs. Terms newly introduced by Colossians are marked [NEW] and are proposed here for addition to translation memory at the start of Phase 2. Risk tiers and review routing follow the conventions of the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json.

| power_of_god | Kuasa Allah | High | Power of God for Salvation | 1:11, 1:29, 2:12 | Reuse exactly; guard against kuasa ghaib misreading, especially relevant given ch. 2’s stoicheia/exousia polemic. |
Section B — New Terms Introduced by Colossians (Proposed Additions to Translation Memory)
| English Term | Malay Rendering | Transliteration | Risk | Doctrine | Colossians References | Rationale / Rejected Alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| image (of God) | Gambar | GAHM-bahr | Critical | Supremacy of Christ over Creation | 1:15, 3:10 | Established Alkitab imago Dei term (Kejadian 1:26-27); rejected: a wholly new coinage that would break continuity with existing Malay OT usage. Risk: “gambar” commonly means photograph, risking flattening into mere likeness rather than exact representation of divine being; also intersects Islamic aniconism. |
| firstborn | Yang Sulung | yahng SOO-loong | Critical | Supremacy of Christ over Creation / Deity of Christ | 1:15, 1:18 | Rejected: any rendering implying strict birth-sequence alone (e.g., “yang pertama dilahirkan”), which would reinforce an Arian/Islamic createdness reading. Must be taught with rank/inheritance sense, always paired with 1:16-17’s creation-agency claim. |
| creation / created | Ciptaan / diciptakan | chee-PTAH-ahn / dee-chee-PTAH-kahn | Critical (when applied to Christ as agent) / Medium (as general noun) | Supremacy of Christ over Creation | 1:15-16, 1:23, 3:10 | Standard term; risk escalates sharply when Christ is depicted as creation’s agent rather than its recipient (1:16) — direct collision with tawhid’s exclusive Creator claim for Allah. |
| thrones/dominions/rulers/authorities | Takhta, penguasa, pemerintah, kuasa-kuasa | TAHKH-tah, peng-GOO-ah-sah, per-MERR-in-tah, KOO-ah-sah | High | Supremacy of Christ over Creation | 1:16, 2:10, 2:15 | Rejected: kuasa ghaib-adjacent occult framing. Must be taught as created, subordinate, and (per 2:15) publicly defeated powers, not independent or co-eternal spiritual rivals; risk of resonance with Malay animist/bomoh spirit-world belief. |
| hold together / sustain | (Segala sesuatu) terpelihara/dikekalkan bersatu di dalam-Nya | ter-peh-lee-HAH-rah / dee-keh-KAHL-kahn ber-SAH-too | Critical | Supremacy of Christ over Creation | 1:17 | Strong ongoing-sustaining-power claim equivalent to power_of_God doctrine, applied to Christ; must not be diluted to vague “everything is connected” cosmic-harmony language. |
| head (of the body/church) | Kepala | keh-PAH-lah | Medium | Christ as Head of the Church | 1:18 | Standard anatomical term; doctrinal weight (source-of-life + ruling authority) requires teaching support, not a different word choice. |
| beginning | Yang Awal | yahng AH-wahl | Medium | Christ as Head of the Church | 1:18 | Distinguish from archai (“rulers,” 1:16) sharing the same root but a different sense. |
| preeminent | Menjadi yang terutama (dalam segala perkara) | men-JAH-dee yahng ter-oo-TAH-mah | High | Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ | 1:18 | Must retain totalizing scope (“in everything”), not softened to a merely comparative superiority. |
| fullness | Kepenuhan | keh-peh-NOO-hahn | Critical | Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily | 1:19, 2:9-10 | Central term-family for the curriculum’s namesake doctrine; must be paired consistently with dwell (berdiam) and, at 2:9, deity (sifat ke-Allah-an). |
| dwell (fullness dwells in Christ) | Berdiam / tinggal | ber-DEE-ahm / TEENG-gahl | Critical | Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily / Incarnation | 1:19, 2:9 | Must convey permanent, essential indwelling, not temporary visitation, inspiration, or episodic appearance (guards against a prophetic-inspiration reading and against Hindu-Buddhist avatar-style episodic appearance, per baseline incarnation entry). |
| deity / Godhead (theotēs) | Sifat ke-Allah-an | SEE-faht keh-AHL-lahh-ahn | Critical — highest-priority term in this Language Package extension | Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily / Deity of Christ | 2:9 | The single most direct available textual collision with tawhid: the complete divine essence, not a portion or attribute, dwells bodily in Christ. Must never be softened to “a divine quality” or “God’s power at work in him” (mainstream Islamic Christology terms). Always route to human theologian review. |
| bodily | Secara jasmani | seh-CHAH-rah JAHS-mah-nee | Critical | Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily / Incarnation | 2:9 | Must be paired with Penjelmaan (baseline incarnation term); guards against docetic/avatar-style readings. |
| reconcile / reconciliation | Mendamaikan / Pendamaian | men-dah-MAI-kahn / pen-dah-MAI-ahn | High | Reconciliation through the Cross | 1:20, 1:21-22 | Distinguish from Malaysia’s secular/political “harmony” vocabulary (perpaduan, muhibbah); must retain specific, cosmic, God-ward, cross-grounded content. |
| make peace | Mengadakan damai | meng-ah-DAH-kahn DAH-mai | Medium | Reconciliation through the Cross | 1:20 | Must be grammatically tied to “blood of his cross,” not read as a general peaceable disposition. |
| blood of the cross | Darah salib-Nya | DAH-rah SAH-lib-nyah | Critical | Reconciliation through the Cross / Resurrection of Christ | 1:20, 2:14 | Qur’an 4:157 denies the crucifixion specifically (not only Christ’s death); this is a sharper, more explicit point of difference than the resurrection doctrine alone and must be taught directly, not glossed over. |
| mystery | Rahsia | RAH-see-ah | High | Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism | 1:26-27, 2:2, 4:3 | Risk of resonance with Malay Sufi tasawuf esoteric-knowledge transmission (ilmu batin); must be taught as fully and openly disclosed truth, the opposite of ongoing secret/elite knowledge. |
| philosophy and empty deceit | Falsafah dan tipu daya yang sia-sia | fahl-SAH-fah dahn TEE-poo DAH-yah | Medium | Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism | 2:8 | Not a blanket condemnation of reasoned thought; targets the specific false system troubling Colossae. |
| human tradition | Tradisi manusia | trah-DEE-see mah-NOO-see-ah | Medium-High | Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism | 2:8 | Must not be read as disparaging Malay adat (customary law/custom), which carries genuine cultural and legal force; targets specifically human teaching set against Christ’s authority. |
| elemental spirits/principles of the world | Roh-roh/kuasa-kuasa dasar dunia ini | ROHKH-roh / KOO-ah-sah DAH-sahr | Critical | Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism | 2:8, 2:20 | Direct intersection with Malay animist substrate (semangat, nature-spirits); must clarify believers are freed from any claimed authority of such powers, not that their potency is affirmed. |
| circumcision (spiritual) | Sunat | SOO-naht | High | Union with Christ | 2:11 | Sunat is the standard term for Islamic khitan, bound up with Malay-Muslim male identity; must clarify this occurrence is entirely metaphorical (inward transformation via union with Christ), not a bodily rite, and neither requires nor disparages the literal practice. |
| buried with / raised with (in baptism) | Dikuburkan bersama-sama Dia / Dibangkitkan bersama-sama Dia | dee-koo-BOOR-kahn ber-SAH-mah-sah-mah | Critical | Union with Christ / Resurrection of Christ | 2:12 | Must be distinguished from ritual washing/purification (wudu’-parallel); this is identification with Christ’s real historical death and bodily resurrection. |
| record of debt | Surat hutang / catatan hutang | SOO-raht HOO-tahng | Medium | Reconciliation through the Cross | 2:14 | Legal-financial metaphor; keep tied to “nailed to the cross.” |
| triumphed over (rulers and authorities) | Mengalahkan/mempermalukan mereka secara terbuka | meng-ah-LAH-kahn | Medium-High | Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ | 2:15 | Reinforces that spiritual powers are decisively, publicly defeated, not to be feared as rivals to Christ. |
| festival, new moon, sabbath | Perayaan, bulan baru, hari Sabat | peh-rah-YAH-ahn, BOO-lahn BAH-roo | Medium | Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism | 2:16-17 | These are “shadows” fulfilled in Christ (the substance); not a live legal question for believers today. |
| worship of angels | Penyembahan malaikat | peh-NYEM-bah-hahn mah-LAI-kaht | Critical | Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism | 2:18 | Angels are a formal pillar of Islamic iman; must clarify this condemns worship/veneration of angels, not belief in their existence. |
| self-made religion | Agama/keagamaan buatan sendiri | ah-GAH-mah boo-AH-tahn SEN-dee-ree | Medium | Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism | 2:23 | Paul’s polemical assessment of a specific false system; not a general label for any non-Christian religious practice. |
| severity to the body (asceticism) | Kekerasan/kekejaman terhadap tubuh | keh-keh-RAH-sahn ter-HAH-dahp TOO-booh | Medium | Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism | 2:23 | Resonates with Sufi zuhud ascetic tradition; Paul’s specific critique is that such practice has no real power against sin apart from union with Christ. |
| Christ seated at the right hand of God | Kristus duduk di sebelah kanan Allah | DOO-dook dee seh-BEH-lah KAH-nahn | High | Lordship of Christ / Deity of Christ | 3:1 | Enthronement/co-regency language; reinforces Christ’s sharing of God’s own unique sovereign rule. |
| hidden with Christ in God | Tersembunyi bersama-sama Kristus di dalam Allah | ter-sem-BOO-nyee ber-SAH-mah-sah-mah | Medium-High | Union with Christ / Assurance of Salvation | 3:3 | Present secure identity and future certainty, not literal spatial concealment. |
| when Christ appears | Apabila Kristus dinyatakan/menyata | AH-pah-bee-lah KRIS-toos dee-nyah-TAH-kahn | High | Lordship of Christ | 3:4 | Distinguish sharply from Islamic eschatology’s subordinate-prophet return of Isa; Christ appears in glory as divine Lord and Judge. |
| put off the old self / put on the new self | Menanggalkan manusia lama / mengenakan manusia baru | meh-nahng-GAHL-kahn mah-NOO-see-ah LAH-mah | High | Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New | 3:9-10 | Distinguish from Islamic tawbah/islah al-nafs (moral reform of the same unchanged self); this is a decisive, ontological identity-change grounded in union with Christ’s death/resurrection, not gradual self-improvement. |
| renewed (in the image of the Creator) | Dibaharui… menurut Gambar Penciptanya | dee-bah-HAH-roo-ee | Medium-High | Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New | 3:10 | Cross-reference with Gambar (1:15) so the same term’s doctrinal weight is reinforced consistently. |
| submit (wives to husbands) | Tunduk | TOON-dook | High | Household Codes | 3:18 | Must always be taught paired with 3:19’s command to husbands to love; guard against collapsing into Malaysia’s Syariah-administered marital taat framework without the Christ-centered, reciprocal qualifier. |
| love (husbands love wives) | Kasihilah (isterimu) | kah-SEE-hee-lah | Medium | Household Codes | 3:19 | Necessary reciprocal counterpart to 3:18; never presented separately. |
| obey (children/bondservants) | Taat | tah-AHT | High | Household Codes | 3:20, 3:22 | Per baseline obedience_of_faith caution; retain qualifiers (“in the Lord,” “fearing the Lord”) so obedience flows from, not earns, standing with God. |
| bondservants / masters | Hamba / Tuan | HAHM-bah / TOO-ahn | Medium (hamba) / Low (tuan) | Household Codes | 3:22-4:1 | Hamba also functions as a common Muslim religious self-designation (hamba Allah); clarify the literal historical household-institution context. Tuan usefully confirms baseline’s tuan/Tuhan distinction. |
| inheritance | Warisan | wah-REE-sahn | Medium | Household Codes / Adoption | 1:12, 3:24 | Reinforces baseline adoption doctrine (full inheritance rights for all believers regardless of earthly status). |
| open door for the word | Pintu untuk firman itu | PEEN-too OON-took FEER-mahn | Medium-High | Warning against False Teaching / Evangelism | 4:3 | Route for pastoral/legal-safety review per baseline evangelism entry; proselytizing Muslims is legally restricted in Malaysia. |
| walk in wisdom toward outsiders | Hidup dengan bijaksana terhadap orang luar | HEE-doop deng-AHN bee-jahk-SAH-nah | Medium | Warning against False Teaching / Evangelism | 4:5 | Frame as wise, respectful public witness in a plural society, not sectarian othering. |
| wisdom (spiritual) | Hikmat | HEEK-maht | Medium | Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism | 1:9, 1:28, 4:5 | Established Bible term (cf. Amsal), but carries weight as a divine-attribute and Sufi-mystical term in Islamic thought; clarify as ordinary Spirit-given practical discernment, not esoteric illumination. |
| full knowledge | Pengetahuan yang benar/sempurna | peng-eh-TAH-hoo-ahn yahng seh-MOOR-nah | Medium | Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism | 1:9-10, 2:2 | Contrasts with the false teachers’ claimed partial/esoteric knowledge; full and sufficient knowledge already available in Christ. |
| domain of darkness | Kuasa kegelapan | KOO-ah-sah keh-geh-LAH-pahn | Critical | Reconciliation through the Cross / Union with Christ | 1:13 | Risk of collision with Malay folk-animist belief in ilmu hitam and jin; must be a biblical-theological category (Satan’s authority over unredeemed humanity), never affirmed as real occult potency. |
| redemption | Penebusan | peh-neh-BOO-sahn | Critical | Reconciliation through the Cross | 1:14 | Central atonement term; teach alongside darah salib-Nya so redemption is understood as costly and blood-bought. |
| forgiveness of sins | Pengampunan dosa | peng-ahm-POO-nahn DOH-sah | High | Reconciliation through the Cross | 1:14, 2:13 | Per baseline justification entry, must not stand alone as the whole gospel content; part of a fuller redemption-reconciliation package. |
| filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions | Menggenapkan apa yang kurang daripada kesengsaraan Kristus | meng-geh-NAHP-kahn AH-pah yahng KOO-rahng | Critical | Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ | 1:24 | Must never be read as implying Christ’s atonement is insufficient; refers to the church’s shared, ongoing missionary suffering, not the finished atoning work of the cross. |
| love (agapē) | Kasih | KAH-sih | Medium | (general — supports all doctrines) | 1:4, 1:8, 3:14, 3:19 | Broad, warm everyday Malay word; specify self-giving, willed character where doctrinally significant. |
| hope | Pengharapan | peng-hah-RAH-pahn | High | Assurance of Salvation | 1:5, 1:23, 1:27 | Must convey confident, secured expectation, not tentative “hoping for the best,” given Islamic soteriology’s undetermined final-judgment framework. |

Critical Risk Terms
Father
Approved rendering: Bapa
Transliteration: BAH-pah
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: Pencipta (Creator, as a substitute to avoid relational language)
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Calling God ‘Father’ can register as implying literal offspring, which tawhid forbids; teach the relational, adoptive sense directly. [Inherited from Romans package.] Colossians usage: greeting and thanksgiving formulas (1:2, 1:3, 1:12) and the closing exhortation (3:17).
Lord
Approved rendering: Tuhan
Transliteration: TOO-hahn
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: tuan (master/sir, non-divine)
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
Established Alkitab term (Tuhan Yesus); tuan denotes a human master/sir and must never substitute for the divine Lord. [Inherited from Romans package.] Colossians usage: heavy concentration in the household code (3:17, 3:18, 3:20, 3:22-24, 4:1, 4:7, 4:17), where kyrios is also used of human masters (see human_masters new-term entry below) — the tuan/Tuhan distinction is especially load-bearing here.
Jesus
Approved rendering: Yesus
Transliteration: YEH-soos
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Isa (the Qur’anic name, deliberately avoided by established Alkitab convention)
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
The Alkitab deliberately uses Yesus rather than the Qur’anic Isa. [Inherited from Romans package.] Colossians usage: throughout; also names a co-worker, ‘Jesus called Justus’ (4:11), rendered identically as Yesus per established Alkitab convention for this shared Second-Temple Jewish name — a brief editorial note should distinguish the two individuals.
Messiah
Approved rendering: Kristus
Transliteration: KRIS-toos
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Rejected alternatives: Al-Masih (the Qur’anic title, deliberately avoided in favor of the Greek-derived Alkitab convention)
Original: Χριστός
Category: Christology
Established Alkitab usage (Yesus Kristus) deliberately uses Kristus rather than Al-Masih. [Inherited from Romans package.] Colossians usage: central to nearly every doctrinal claim in the letter, especially the Christ-hymn (1:15-20) and 2:9.
God
Approved rendering: Allah
Transliteration: ahl-LAHH
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Tuhan (used for ‘Lord’ in this Language Package; reserving Allah for ‘God’ keeps the two terms distinct as Alkitab does)
Original: θεός
Category: God
Malay Christians have used Allah for God since the earliest Malay Bible translations (1629); its use remains legally and politically contested in Malaysia. [Inherited from Romans package.] Colossians 2:9 makes this term the object of the book’s single highest-priority claim: the ‘fullness of deity’ (a cognate of theos) dwells bodily in Christ.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: Roh Kudus
Transliteration: ROHKH KOO-doos
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: Jibril (the archangel Gabriel), roh halus (a generic nature/subtle spirit in traditional Malay animist belief)
Original: πνεῦμα
Category: God
Must not be equated with Jibril or with roh halus. [Inherited from Romans package.] Colossians usage: 1:8, ‘your love in the Spirit.‘
Resurrection
Approved rendering: Kebangkitan
Transliteration: keh-bahng-KIT-ahn
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Rejected alternatives: diangkat naik ke syurga (being raised up to heaven, without dying)
Original: ἀνάστασις / πρωτότοκος ἐκ τῶν νεκρῶν
Category: Eschatology
Must affirm real bodily death followed by bodily resurrection; must never be a no-death ascension per Qur’an 4:157. [Inherited from Romans package.] Colossians usage: 1:18 (‘firstborn from the dead,’ explicitly presupposing prior death), 2:12, 3:1.
Incarnation
Approved rendering: Penjelmaan
Transliteration: pen-jel-MAHN
Doctrine: Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: Tuhan yang menyamar sebagai manusia (God disguising himself as a human)
Original: ἐν αὐτῷ κατοικεῖ πᾶν τὸ πλήρωμα τῆς θεότητος σωματικῶς
Category: Christology
Must clarify this is the eternal Son permanently taking on true human nature, not an episodic avatar-style appearance. [Inherited from Romans package.] Colossians 1:19 and 2:9 are this doctrine’s clearest textual anchors in the New Testament; must be taught alongside the new terms fullness, dwell_permanently, deity_godhead, and bodily_form below.
Son Of God
Approved rendering: Anak Allah
Transliteration: AH-nahk ahl-LAHH
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: kekasih Allah (God’s beloved one), wakil Allah (God’s representative)
Original: υἱὸς τῆς ἀγάπης αὐτοῦ
Category: Christology
Full phrase required, never softened; this Language Package explicitly forbids Insider-Movement-style euphemistic substitution. [Inherited from Romans package.] Colossians 1:13 extends this doctrine to the closely related but distinct phrase ‘Son of his love’ — see the new term kingdom_of_the_son below, which must be taught with the same non-negotiable no-euphemism rule.
Image Of God
Approved rendering: Gambar
Transliteration: GAHM-bahr
Doctrine: Supremacy of Christ over Creation
Rejected alternatives: lukisan/potret (a fine-art painting/portrait, no more ontologically precise than gambar and lacking Alkitab precedent), wajah (face/countenance, too narrow, excluding the fuller likeness-of-being sense)
Original: εἰκὼν τοῦ θεοῦ τοῦ ἀοράτου
Category: Christology
Following established Alkitab imago Dei usage (Kejadian 1:26-27). Everyday Malay gambar primarily means ‘photograph/picture,’ risking a flattened symbolic reading rather than exact ontological representation of God’s being; also intersects Islamic aniconism regarding depictions of Allah. Teaching material must clarify Paul describes ontological identity with the Father’s nature, not a visual image. Recurs at 3:10 applied to believers’ renewal after Christ’s own image (Kolose 1:15, 3:10).
Firstborn Over Creation
Approved rendering: Yang Sulung
Transliteration: yahng SOO-loong
Doctrine: Supremacy of Christ over Creation
Rejected alternatives: yang pertama dilahirkan (the first one born, a literal birth-sequence rendering that reproduces the Arian/Qur’anic createdness-of-Christ reading)
Original: πρωτότοκος πάσης κτίσεως
Category: Creation
One of the single highest-risk terms in the entire book. Read literally as birth-sequence, produces exactly the reading mainstream Islamic theology already holds, that Christ (Isa) is a created being. Must always be taught together with 1:16-17 (‘all things were created through him… he is before all things’), which place Christ as creation’s agent, outside and prior to it, never in isolation (Kolose 1:15).
Firstborn From The Dead
Approved rendering: Yang Sulung di antara orang mati
Transliteration: yahng SOO-loong dee AHN-tah-rah OH-rahng MAH-tee
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Rejected alternatives: diangkat naik ke syurga (no-death ascension, the forbidden substitution for resurrection per the Romans baseline)
Original: πρωτότοκος ἐκ τῶν νεκρῶν
Category: Eschatology
This occurrence (1:18) explicitly specifies ‘from the dead,’ removing the ambiguity present in 1:15’s bare firstborn title and reinforcing the Critical resurrection doctrine; must presuppose a real, historical death, against Qur’an 4:157 (Kolose 1:18).
Before All Things
Approved rendering: Dia ada sebelum segala sesuatu
Transliteration: DEE-ah AH-dah seh-BEH-loom seh-GAH-lah seh-SOO-ah-too
Doctrine: Supremacy of Christ over Creation
Rejected alternatives: Dia yang paling utama (he is the most important, a rank-only rendering that drops the pre-existence claim)
Original: αὐτός ἐστιν πρὸ πάντων
Category: Christology
This is the verse that most directly resolves the ambiguity risk of firstborn_over_creation — pre-existence, not first-createdness. Must be translated and taught together with 1:15-16 as a single unit (Kolose 1:17).
Hold Together
Approved rendering: Segala sesuatu terpelihara/dikekalkan bersatu di dalam Dia
Transliteration: ter-peh-lee-HAH-rah / dee-keh-KAHL-kahn ber-SAH-too
Doctrine: Supremacy of Christ over Creation
Rejected alternatives: segala sesuatu berhubung antara satu sama lain (everything is interconnected, a vague cosmic-harmony reading with no personal sustaining agent)
Original: τὰ πάντα ἐν αὐτῷ συνέστηκεν
Category: God
A providence-level claim of ongoing divine sovereignty applied specifically to Christ; must not be diluted into ‘everything is connected’ or confused with impersonal cosmic-order concepts (Kolose 1:17).
Fullness
Approved rendering: Kepenuhan
Transliteration: keh-peh-NOO-hahn
Doctrine: Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Rejected alternatives: sebahagian sifat Allah (a portion of God’s nature, directly contradicting the totality Paul asserts)
Original: πλήρωμα
Category: Christology
The term-family carrying the curriculum’s namesake doctrine; must be paired consistently with dwell_permanently (1:19) and, at 2:9, with deity_godhead, refuting any false teaching that divided divine attributes among intermediary beings.
Dwell Permanently
Approved rendering: Berdiam / tinggal
Transliteration: ber-DEE-ahm / TEENG-gahl
Doctrine: Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Rejected alternatives: melawat (to visit, implying temporary presence), mengilhamkan (to inspire, aligning with the prophetic-inspiration model of mainstream Islamic Christology)
Original: κατοικῆσαι / κατοικεῖ
Category: Christology
Must be distinguished from temporary indwelling, visitation, or episodic prophetic inspiration; this is a permanent ontological indwelling of the whole divine nature, reinforcing the Critical incarnation doctrine (Kolose 1:19, 2:9).
Bodily Form
Approved rendering: Secara jasmani
Transliteration: seh-CHAH-rah JAHS-mah-nee
Doctrine: Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Rejected alternatives: secara rohani sahaja (spiritually only, a docetic-adjacent rendering that denies the real physical body)
Original: σωματικῶς
Category: Christology
Must be paired with Penjelmaan; guards specifically against a docetic or avatar-style reading (Kolose 2:9).
Blood Of The Cross
Approved rendering: Darah salib-Nya
Transliteration: DAH-rah SAH-lib-nyah
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Rejected alternatives: kematian-Nya sahaja (his death alone, omitting the specific, explicitly denied crucifixion method)
Original: αἷμα τοῦ σταυροῦ αὐτοῦ
Category: Salvation
Qur’an 4:157 denies the crucifixion specifically, not only death — an even sharper, more explicit point of difference than the resurrection doctrine alone; must be taught as a direct, load-bearing point of difference (Kolose 1:20, 2:14).
Elemental Spirits
Approved rendering: Roh-roh/kuasa-kuasa dasar dunia ini
Transliteration: ROHKH-roh / KOO-ah-sah DAH-sahr
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Rejected alternatives: semangat (the specific Malay folk-animist life-force/spirit term, which would affirm rather than deny these powers’ potency)
Original: στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου
Category: False Teaching
Intersects directly with the animist substrate persisting beneath official Malaysian Islam; teaching material must state Paul is declaring believers free from any claimed authority of such powers, not affirming their real potency (Kolose 2:8, 2:20).
Buried And Raised With Christ
Approved rendering: Dikuburkan bersama-sama Dia / Dibangkitkan bersama-sama Dia
Transliteration: dee-koo-BOOR-kahn ber-SAH-mah-sah-mah / dee-bahng-KIT-kahn ber-SAH-mah-sah-mah
Doctrine: Union with Christ
Rejected alternatives: dibersihkan bersama-sama Dia (cleansed together with him, a ritual-washing reading closer to wudu’)
Original: συνταφέντες / συνηγέρθητε
Category: Union with Christ
Must be distinguished from a merely ritual washing or purification rite; this is identification with Christ’s actual, historical death and bodily resurrection (Kolose 2:12).
Worship Of Angels
Approved rendering: Penyembahan malaikat
Transliteration: peh-NYEM-bah-hahn mah-LAI-kaht
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Rejected alternatives: kepercayaan kepada malaikat (belief in angels, which would wrongly condemn the existence-belief itself rather than the act of worship)
Original: θρησκεία τῶν ἀγγέλων
Category: False Teaching
Angels are a formal pillar of Islamic iman; teaching material must state precisely that Paul does not deny angels exist, but forbids worshiping them (Kolose 2:18).
Domain Of Darkness
Approved rendering: Kuasa kegelapan
Transliteration: KOO-ah-sah keh-geh-LAH-pahn
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Rejected alternatives: ilmu hitam (black magic, which would affirm rather than deny the real efficacy of folk-magical practice)
Original: ἐξουσία τοῦ σκότους
Category: Salvation
Risks direct collision with the Malay folk-animist substrate; must name a biblical-theological category, never affirming the real efficacy of folk-magical practice (Kolose 1:13).
Redemption
Approved rendering: Penebusan
Transliteration: peh-neh-BOO-sahn
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Rejected alternatives: pembebasan percuma (a free, costless release, losing the price-paid/ransom dimension)
Original: ἀπολύτρωσις
Category: Salvation
Central atonement term; must be taught alongside blood_of_the_cross so redemption is understood as costly and blood-bought (Kolose 1:14).
Filling Up Christs Afflictions
Approved rendering: Menggenapkan apa yang kurang daripada kesengsaraan Kristus
Transliteration: meng-geh-NAHP-kahn AH-pah yahng KOO-rahng
Doctrine: Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ
Rejected alternatives: melengkapkan korban Kristus yang tidak cukup (completing Christ’s insufficient sacrifice, a rendering that would directly contradict the Sufficiency of Christ doctrine)
Original: ἀνταναπληρῶ τὰ ὑστερήματα τῶν θλίψεων τοῦ Χριστοῦ
Category: Church
Must never be read as implying Christ’s atonement is insufficient; refers to the church’s shared, ongoing missionary suffering, not the finished atoning work of the cross (Kolose 1:24).
Kingdom Of The Son
Approved rendering: Kerajaan Anak-Nya yang dikasihi-Nya
Transliteration: keh-rah-JAH-ahn AH-nahk-nyah yahng dee-KAH-see-nyah
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: kerajaan kekasih Allah (kingdom of God’s beloved one, softening Anak Allah toward a euphemistic ‘beloved one’ reading forbidden by the Romans baseline)
Built on the baseline kingdom_of_god entry and the baseline son_of_god entry’s insistence on retaining full Sonship language. ‘Son of his love’ is closely related to but distinct in form from the bare title ‘Son of God’; per Qur’an 112:3 (‘neither begets nor is begotten’), must never be softened toward a merely honorific ‘beloved one’ reading. Teach the full Sonship doctrine here, not only where the bare title appears (Kolose 1:13).
High Risk Terms
Gospel
Approved rendering: Injil
Transliteration: IN-jeel
Doctrine: Gospel
Rejected alternatives: berita baik (generic ‘good news’, without the proclamation weight)
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Salvation
Injil is the established Alkitab (Malay Bible) term, shared with the Qur’anic name for the revelation given to Isa, which Islamic doctrine treats as historically altered (tahrif). This curriculum uses Injil for Paul’s living proclamation specifically, not as a bare reference to a contested book. [Inherited from Romans package.] Colossians usage: paired with ‘the word of truth’ (Kolose 1:5, 1:6) and named as the ground of the believer’s secured hope (1:23); also the subject of Paul’s prayer for an open door for proclamation (4:3).
Grace
Approved rendering: Kasih kurnia
Transliteration: KAH-sih KOOR-nee-ah
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: rahmat (mercy, an Arabic-loan term operating within a deeds-and-mercy Islamic judgment framework)
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Kasih kurnia (‘loving favor’) is a native Malay-Sanskrit compound rather than an Arabic loanword, established in Alkitab usage specifically to convey unearned favor apart from merit, distinct from rahmat, which still functions within a framework where deeds matter for final judgment. [Inherited from Romans package.] Colossians usage: greeting and benediction formulas (1:2, 4:18) and gracious, discerning speech (4:6).
Faith
Approved rendering: Iman
Transliteration: ee-MAHN
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: kepercayaan (generic belief/trust)
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
Iman is shared with Islamic vocabulary (the pillars of belief). Romans’ iman is personal trust in Yesus Kristus specifically; the object of faith must always be stated in context. [Inherited from Romans package.] Colossians usage: 1:4, 1:23, 2:5, 2:7, 2:12 — the object of faith (Christ Jesus) must remain explicit at every occurrence.
Holy
Approved rendering: Kudus
Transliteration: KOO-doos
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: suci (ritually/physically clean)
Original: ἅγιος
Category: Sanctification
Kudus = set apart for God, morally pure; shared with the divine attribute Al-Quddus and used in Roh Kudus. [Inherited from Romans package.] Colossians usage: believers’ standing (1:22) and required conduct (3:12).
Saints
Approved rendering: Orang kudus
Transliteration: OH-rahng KOO-doos
Doctrine: Sainthood
Rejected alternatives: wali (Sufi saints venerated at keramat sites in traditional Malay Islam)
Original: ἅγιοι
Category: Church
Orang kudus = all believers corporately, set apart in Christ, not an elite venerated class. [Inherited from Romans package.] Colossians usage: frequent throughout the opening and closing (1:2, 1:4, 1:12, 1:26, 3:12).
Glory
Approved rendering: Kemuliaan
Transliteration: keh-moo-lee-AH-ahn
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: nur (divine light, associated with Nur Muhammad devotion in the historic Malay Sufi tradition, e.g. the writings of Hamzah Fansuri)
Original: δόξα
Category: God
God’s radiant honor and majesty; avoid nur. [Inherited from Romans package.] Colossians usage: ‘Christ in you, the hope of glory’ (1:27) and believers’ future appearing with Christ ‘in glory’ (3:4).
Election
Approved rendering: Pilihan Allah
Transliteration: pee-LEE-hahn ahl-LAHH
Doctrine: Effectual Calling
Rejected alternatives: takdir (fate/predetermined decree)
Original: ἐκλεκτοί
Category: Salvation
God’s sovereign, personal choosing for salvation, not fatalistic decree. [Inherited from Romans package.] Colossians 3:12 addresses believers as ‘God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved.‘
Sin
Approved rendering: Dosa
Transliteration: DOH-sah
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Rejected alternatives: kesilapan (mistake/error)
Original: ἁμαρτία
Category: Sin
Islamic anthropology (fitrah, humans born sinless) resists inherited universal sinfulness. [Inherited from Romans package.] Colossians usage: 1:14 and 2:13, both tied directly to forgiveness/redemption through Christ.
Power Of God
Approved rendering: Kuasa Allah
Transliteration: KOO-ah-sah ahl-LAHH
Doctrine: Power of God for Salvation
Rejected alternatives: kuasa ghaib (occult/supernatural power, associated with traditional Malay bomoh shamanic practice and animistic belief in semangat, life-force)
Original: δύναμις / κράτος
Category: God
Avoid resonance with folk-animist occult power. [Inherited from Romans package.] Colossians 1:11 and 1:29 use an intensifying cognate (kratos, ‘might/dominion’); chapter 2’s polemic against elemental spirits and cosmic powers raises the stakes of this term’s baseline caution.
Apostle
Approved rendering: Rasul
Transliteration: RAH-sool
Doctrine: Apostleship
Rejected alternatives: utusan (a lower-weight, purely secular ‘envoy/messenger’)
Rasul is also the specific Islamic category for a major scripture-bearing prophet-messenger; managed through explicit teaching, not a substitute word. [Inherited from Romans package.] Colossians 1:1, ‘Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus.‘
Adoption
Approved rendering: Pengangkatan sebagai anak
Transliteration: peng-ahng-KAH-tahn seh-BAH-gai AH-nahk
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: anak angkat (bare, without doctrinal qualifier)
Describes believers’ legal-relational status with full inheritance rights, not a claim that God has literal offspring. [Inherited from Romans package.] Colossians reinforces this doctrine through inheritance language at 1:12 (‘inheritance of the saints in light’) and 3:24 (bondservants promised a heavenly inheritance) without repeating the bare Greek term huiothesia itself.
Obedience Of Faith
Approved rendering: Ketaatan iman
Transliteration: keh-tah-AH-tahn ee-MAHN
Doctrine: Obedience of Faith
Rejected alternatives: ketaatan agama (generic religious dutifulness/submission)
Obedience as the fruit of a faith relationship already secured by grace, not dutiful religious submission that itself earns standing. [Inherited from Romans package.] Colossians’ household code (taat, 3:20, 3:22 — see the new term children_servants_obey below) must be taught in direct continuity with this baseline caution.
Law
Approved rendering: Hukum Taurat
Transliteration: HOO-koom tow-RAHT
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Rejected alternatives: Syariah / Hukum Syariat (Islamic religious law, an operative parallel legal system in Malaysia)
NEVER use Syariah, a currently operating parallel court system for Muslims in Malaysia. [Inherited from Romans package.] Colossians 2:16-17’s festival/new-moon/Sabbath observances (see festival_new_moon_sabbath new-term entry below) are OT law markers called ‘a shadow of the things to come,’ fulfilled in Christ; the underlying category (Hukum Taurat) must not be confused with Syariah here either.
Created Through And For Christ
Approved rendering: Melalui Dia dan untuk Dia
Transliteration: meh-LAH-loo-ee DEE-ah dahn OON-took DEE-ah
Doctrine: Supremacy of Christ over Creation
Rejected alternatives: oleh Dia sahaja (by him alone, dropping the equally essential ‘for him’ goal-clause)
Original: δι’ αὐτοῦ καὶ εἰς αὐτὸν
Category: Creation
Christ as both the instrumental means and the final goal/purpose of all creation; must preserve the double claim without softening (Kolose 1:16).
Cosmic Powers
Approved rendering: Takhta, penguasa, pemerintah, kuasa-kuasa
Transliteration: TAHKH-tah, peng-GOO-ah-sah, per-MERR-in-tah, KOO-ah-sah
Doctrine: Supremacy of Christ over Creation
Rejected alternatives: roh-roh (spirits, too easily collapsed into the folk-animist roh halus category without the created/subordinate qualifier)
Original: θρόνοι, κυριότητες, ἀρχαί, ἐξουσίαι
Category: Creation
Rendered as a set phrase for ranked spiritual/political powers. Risks being heard through the Malay folk-animist substrate (roh halus, jin, ancestor-spirits) as independently potent beings; teaching material must state these are created, subordinate, and (per 2:15) publicly and decisively defeated (Kolose 1:16, 2:10, 2:15).
Preeminence Of Christ
Approved rendering: Menjadi yang terutama dalam segala perkara
Transliteration: men-JAH-dee yahng ter-oo-TAH-mah
Doctrine: Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ
Rejected alternatives: salah seorang yang terbesar (one of the greatest, a merely comparative rendering)
Original: ἵνα γένηται ἐν πᾶσιν αὐτὸς πρωτεύων
Category: Christology
The climactic thesis of the Christ-hymn; must retain the totalizing scope (‘in everything’), never softened toward a merely comparative superiority (Kolose 1:18).
Reconciliation
Approved rendering: Mendamaikan / pendamaian
Transliteration: men-dah-MAI-kahn / pen-dah-MAI-ahn
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Rejected alternatives: perpaduan / muhibbah (Malaysia’s secular/political interethnic-harmony vocabulary, which flattens cosmic God-ward reconciliation into generic social peacemaking)
Original: ἀποκαταλλάξαι
Category: Salvation
Must retain the specific, cosmic, God-ward reconciliation accomplished exclusively through Christ’s atoning death, not generic tolerance or interfaith goodwill (Kolose 1:20, 1:21-22).
Mystery Of Christ
Approved rendering: Rahsia
Transliteration: RAH-see-ah
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Rejected alternatives: ilmu batin (esoteric inner knowledge, the exact Sufi tasawuf concept this doctrine must avoid resembling)
Original: μυστήριον
Category: False Teaching
Risk of resonance with Malay Sufi tasawuf esoteric-knowledge transmission; must be taught as fully and openly disclosed truth, the opposite of an ongoing secret reserved for an inner circle (Kolose 1:26-27, 2:2, 4:3).
Spiritual Circumcision
Approved rendering: Sunat
Transliteration: SOO-naht
Doctrine: Union with Christ
Rejected alternatives: pemotongan rohani (a newly coined literal phrase lacking the covenant-sign resonance of the established term sunat)
Original: περιτομὴ ἀχειροποίητος / περιτομὴ τοῦ Χριστοῦ
Category: Union with Christ
Sunat is the exact, standard Malay term for Islamic male khitan, bound up with Malay-Muslim male identity. Must clarify this occurrence is entirely metaphorical/spiritual, neither requiring nor disparaging the literal cultural practice (Kolose 2:11).
Seated At Right Hand
Approved rendering: Kristus duduk di sebelah kanan Allah
Transliteration: DOO-dook dee seh-BEH-lah KAH-nahn
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Kristus berada bersama Allah (Christ is with God, a vaguer proximity claim lacking the enthronement/co-regency force)
Original: ὁ Χριστὸς ἐν δεξιᾷ τοῦ θεοῦ καθήμενος
Category: Christology
Enthronement/co-regency language reinforcing Christ’s sharing of God’s own unique sovereign rule (Kolose 3:1).
Christ Appears In Glory
Approved rendering: Apabila Kristus dinyatakan/menyata
Transliteration: AH-pah-bee-lah KRIS-toos dee-nyah-TAH-kahn
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: apabila Isa kembali (when Isa returns, importing the subordinate-prophet Islamic eschatological figure instead of the divine Lord and Judge)
Original: ὅταν ὁ Χριστὸς φανερωθῇ
Category: Eschatology
Distinguish sharply from Islamic eschatology’s subordinate-prophet return of Isa; Christ appears in glory as divine Lord and Judge (Kolose 3:4).
Old Self New Self
Approved rendering: Menanggalkan manusia lama / mengenakan manusia baru
Transliteration: meh-nahng-GAHL-kahn mah-NOO-see-ah LAH-mah
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Rejected alternatives: bertaubat (Islamic tawbah, repentance/turning back, which describes moral reform of the same unchanged self rather than an ontological identity-replacement)
Original: ἀπεκδυσάμενοι τὸν παλαιὸν ἄνθρωπον … ἐνδυσάμενοι τὸν νέον
Category: Sanctification
A decisive, once-for-all change of identity grounded in union with Christ’s death and resurrection, not gradual self-improvement (Kolose 3:9-10).
Wives Submit
Approved rendering: Tunduk
Transliteration: TOON-dook
Doctrine: Household Codes
Rejected alternatives: taat sepenuhnya (total, unqualified obedience, collapsing this into Malaysia’s Syariah-administered marital taat framework without Paul’s reciprocal qualifier)
Original: ὑποτάσσεσθε
Category: Household
Must always be taught paired with 3:19’s command to husbands to love; guard against collapsing into Malaysia’s Syariah-administered marital taat framework (Kolose 3:18).
Children Servants Obey
Approved rendering: Taat
Transliteration: tah-AHT
Doctrine: Household Codes
Rejected alternatives: patuh secara mutlak (absolute, unqualified compliance, dropping the ‘in the Lord’/‘fearing the Lord’ qualifiers)
Original: ὑπακούετε
Category: Household
Must retain the qualifiers ‘in the Lord’ / ‘fearing the Lord’ so this obedience flows from, not earns, standing before God (Kolose 3:20, 3:22).
Forgiveness Of Sins
Approved rendering: Pengampunan dosa
Transliteration: peng-ahm-POO-nahn DOH-sah
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Rejected alternatives: pengampunan sahaja tanpa penebusan (forgiveness alone without redemption, standing in as the whole gospel content)
Original: ἄφεσις τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν
Category: Salvation
Must not be presented alone as the whole gospel’s legal content; part of a fuller redemption-reconciliation-new-creation package (Kolose 1:14, 2:13).
Hope
Approved rendering: Pengharapan
Transliteration: peng-hah-RAH-pahn
Doctrine: Hope and Assurance in Christ
Rejected alternatives: harapan yang tidak pasti (uncertain hope/wishful thinking, understating the confident, secured expectation Paul intends)
Original: ἐλπίς
Category: Eschatology
Must convey confident, secured expectation grounded in Christ’s finished work, not tentative ‘hoping for the best,’ given Islamic soteriology’s undetermined-until-Judgment-Day framework (Kolose 1:5, 1:23, 1:27).
Medium Risk Terms
Peace
Approved rendering: Damai sejahtera
Transliteration: DAH-mai seh-jah-TEH-rah
Doctrine: Peace with God
Rejected alternatives: ketenangan (inner calm)
Original: εἰρήνη
Category: Salvation
In Romans 5:1, damai sejahtera is relational, whole-life peace with God through justification. [Inherited from Romans package.] Colossians usage: greeting formula (1:2); expands into cosmic reconciliation at 1:20 (see reconciliation and make_peace new-term entries below) and into the inward arbiter of the believer’s heart at 3:15 — not mere psychological calm.
Church
Approved rendering: Gereja
Transliteration: geh-REH-jah
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Rejected alternatives: jemaah (a term also used broadly for a mosque congregation or generic religious assembly)
Original: ἐκκλησία
Category: Church
Gereja is an established, unambiguous Malay word for the Christian church, distinct from masjid and jemaah. [Inherited from Romans package.] Colossians develops the body-metaphor further than Romans (1:18, 1:24, 2:19, 4:15-16).
Kingdom Of God
Approved rendering: Kerajaan Allah
Transliteration: keh-rah-JAH-ahn ahl-LAHH
Doctrine: Kingdom Mission
Rejected alternatives: pentadbiran Allah (God’s administration)
Original: βασιλεία
Category: Kingdom
Kerajaan doubles in modern Malay as the ordinary word for ‘government’; teaching material must make clear God’s Kerajaan is his sovereign reign, not a bureaucratic administration. [Inherited from Romans package, unchanged.] Colossians 1:13 adapts this baseline phrase into ‘the kingdom of the Son of his love’; see the new term kingdom_of_the_son below for that adapted, Critical-risk construction, which must never replace this entry but always accompany it in context.
Gentiles
Approved rendering: Bangsa bukan Yahudi
Transliteration: BAHNG-sah BOO-kahn yah-HOO-dee
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles
Rejected alternatives: kafir (unbeliever/infidel, an Islamic religious-legal category with strong, actively contested pejorative force in contemporary Malay/Indonesian religious discourse)
Ethnically neutral Bible term; kafir must never substitute. [Inherited from Romans package.] Colossians 3:11’s list (‘neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised… slave, free’) extends this doctrine’s scope; the full, undiluted force of ‘Christ is all, and in all’ must be retained against Malaysia’s own ethnic-religious categories.
Head Of Church
Approved rendering: Kepala
Transliteration: keh-PAH-lah
Doctrine: Christ as Head of the Church
Rejected alternatives: ketua (organizational chief/leader, understating the source-of-life dimension)
Original: κεφαλή
Category: Church
Standard, unambiguous Malay anatomical word carrying no serious syncretism risk; the doctrinal weight (source-of-life plus ruling authority, not merely organizational leadership) requires teaching support at 1:18 and 2:19.
Beginning Source
Approved rendering: Yang Awal
Transliteration: yahng AH-wahl
Doctrine: Christ as Head of the Church
Rejected alternatives: permulaan (a bare temporal ‘start,’ without the source/origin nuance)
Original: ἀρχή
Category: Christology
Must be distinguished from archai (‘rulers,’ 1:16), sharing the same Greek root but a different sense (Kolose 1:18).
Make Peace
Approved rendering: Mengadakan damai
Transliteration: meng-ah-DAH-kahn DAH-mai
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Rejected alternatives: berdamai secara umum (making peace in a general, undefined sense, detached from the cross)
Original: εἰρηνοποιήσας
Category: Salvation
Must be grammatically tied to blood_of_the_cross so peace is understood as a costly achievement, not a general disposition Christ merely modeled (Kolose 1:20).
Hollow Philosophy
Approved rendering: Falsafah dan tipu daya yang sia-sia
Transliteration: fahl-SAH-fah dahn TEE-poo DAH-yah
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Rejected alternatives: falsafah (bare, unqualified, risking a blanket condemnation of reasoned thought as such)
Original: φιλοσοφία καὶ κενὴ ἀπάτη
Category: False Teaching
Should not be read as a blanket condemnation of philosophical or rational inquiry; the qualifiers must be retained so the warning targets the specific false system troubling Colossae (Kolose 2:8).
Record Of Debt
Approved rendering: Surat hutang / catatan hutang
Transliteration: SOO-raht HOO-tahng
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Rejected alternatives: dosa (sin, too generic, losing the specific legal-indictment metaphor)
Original: χειρόγραφον τοῖς δόγμασιν
Category: Salvation
A vivid legal-financial metaphor; must be kept grammatically tied to ‘nailed to the cross’ (Kolose 2:14).
Festival New Moon Sabbath
Approved rendering: Perayaan, bulan baru, hari Sabat
Transliteration: peh-rah-YAH-ahn, BOO-lahn BAH-roo
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Rejected alternatives: hari cuti rasmi (official public holiday, a purely civic-calendar rendering losing all covenantal/typological content)
Original: ἑορτή, νεομηνία, σάββατα
Category: False Teaching
These are ‘a shadow of the things to come,’ whose substance belongs to Christ; not a live legal question for believers today (Kolose 2:16-17).
Self Made Religion
Approved rendering: Agama/keagamaan buatan sendiri
Transliteration: ah-GAH-mah boo-AH-tahn SEN-dee-ree
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Rejected alternatives: agama palsu (false religion, too broad and applicable to any non-Christian system rather than this specific ascetic error)
Original: ἐθελοθρησκία
Category: False Teaching
Paul’s polemical assessment of a specific false system, not a general label for any non-Christian religious practice (Kolose 2:23).
Severity To The Body
Approved rendering: Kekerasan/kekejaman terhadap tubuh
Transliteration: keh-keh-RAH-sahn ter-HAH-dahp TOO-booh
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Rejected alternatives: puasa (fasting, too narrow and would wrongly implicate ordinary biblical fasting practice)
Original: ἀφειδία σώματος
Category: False Teaching
Resonates with Sufi zuhud ascetic tradition; Paul’s specific critique is that such practice has no actual power to restrain sin apart from union with Christ (Kolose 2:23).
Bondservants
Approved rendering: Hamba
Transliteration: HAHM-bah
Doctrine: Household Codes
Rejected alternatives: pekerja (worker/employee, an anachronistic modern-labor rendering that loses the historical household-institution context)
Original: δοῦλοι
Category: Household
Also functions as a common Malay-Muslim religious self-designation (hamba Allah); clarify the literal historical household-institution context (Kolose 3:22-4:1).
Inheritance
Approved rendering: Warisan
Transliteration: wah-REE-sahn
Doctrine: Household Codes
Rejected alternatives: harta pusaka (family estate/property, too narrowly material, missing the spiritual-inheritance sense)
Original: κληρονομία / κλῆρος
Category: Household
Reinforces the baseline adoption doctrine (full inheritance rights for all believers regardless of earthly status) (Kolose 1:12, 3:24).
Wisdom Toward Outsiders
Approved rendering: Hidup dengan bijaksana terhadap orang luar
Transliteration: HEE-doop deng-AHN bee-jahk-SAH-nah
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching / Evangelism
Rejected alternatives: berdakwah kepada orang bukan Kristian (evangelizing non-Christians, again importing the specifically Islamic dakwah term and adding unintended proselytizing instruction)
Original: ἐν σοφίᾳ περιπατεῖτε πρὸς τοὺς ἔξω
Category: False Teaching
Frame as wise, respectful public witness in a plural society, not sectarian othering (Kolose 4:5).
Spiritual Wisdom
Approved rendering: Hikmat
Transliteration: HEEK-maht
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Rejected alternatives: irfan/ilmu batin (Sufi esoteric-illumination vocabulary, the exact elitist-knowledge category this doctrine must avoid)
Original: σοφία
Category: False Teaching
The standard, expected Malay Bible term (cf. Kitab Amsal), but carries weight as a divine attribute and Sufi-mystical term; clarify as ordinary Spirit-given practical discernment (Kolose 1:9, 1:28, 4:5).
Full Knowledge
Approved rendering: Pengetahuan yang benar/sempurna
Transliteration: peng-eh-TAH-hoo-ahn yahng seh-MOOR-nah
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Rejected alternatives: pengetahuan rahsia (secret knowledge, reinforcing rather than refuting the false teachers’ elitist-knowledge claim)
Original: ἐπίγνωσις
Category: False Teaching
Contrasts with the false teachers’ claimed partial/esoteric knowledge; full and sufficient knowledge already available in Christ (Kolose 1:9-10, 2:2).
Love Agape
Approved rendering: Kasih
Transliteration: KAH-sih
Doctrine: (general — supports Christian Fellowship and Household Codes)
Rejected alternatives: cinta (romantic/erotic love, the wrong semantic register for agapē)
Original: ἀγάπη
Category: Faith
A warm, well-understood everyday Malay word; teaching material should specify agapē’s self-giving, willed character where doctrinally significant, especially at 3:19’s command to husbands, always taught paired with wives_submit (Kolose 1:4, 1:8, 3:14, 3:19).
Low Risk Terms
Thanksgiving
Approved rendering: Kesyukuran
Transliteration: keh-shoo-KOO-rahn
Doctrine: Thanksgiving
Original: εὐχαριστία
Category: Faith
Standard term shared with everyday gratitude-to-God vocabulary. [Inherited from Romans package.] Colossians usage: recurs frequently as a marker of Christian devotion (1:3, 1:12, 3:15, 3:17, 4:2).
Exhort
Approved rendering: Menasihati
Transliteration: meh-NAH-see-HAH-tee
Doctrine: Mutual Edification
Original: νουθετέω
Category: Faith
Context-sensitive: merayu for pleading, menasihati for building up. [Inherited from Romans package.] Colossians 3:16 uses it of mutual teaching and admonition in corporate worship.
Human Masters
Approved rendering: Tuan
Transliteration: TOO-ahn
Doctrine: Household Codes
Rejected alternatives: majikan (modern employer, anachronistic for the household context, though not doctrinally risky)
Original: κύριοι
Category: Household
Correctly and helpfully confirms the established tuan/Tuhan distinction — human masters (tuan), never the divine Lord (Tuhan) (Kolose 3:22-4:1).
Paulus
Approved rendering: Paulus
Transliteration: POW-loos
Doctrine: Proper Name
Standard Alkitab transliteration for the apostle Paul (Kolose 1:1, 1:23, 4:18).

Critical when applied to Christ as agent of creation; Medium as a general noun Risk Terms
Creation
Approved rendering: Ciptaan / diciptakan
Transliteration: chee-PTAH-ahn / dee-chee-PTAH-kahn
Doctrine: Supremacy of Christ over Creation
Rejected alternatives: kejadian (used specifically for the book of Genesis, Kejadian, risking confusion with that OT book title)
Original: κτίζω / κτίσις
Category: Creation
Standard term; risk escalates sharply when Christ is depicted as creation’s agent (1:16) rather than its recipient — a direct, first-order collision with tawhid’s exclusive Creator claim for Allah (khaliq). Must never be softened to make Christ a created intermediary (Kolose 1:15-16, 1:23, 3:10).
Critical — highest-priority term in this Language Package extension Risk Terms
Deity Godhead
Approved rendering: Sifat ke-Allah-an
Transliteration: SEE-faht keh-AHL-lahh-ahn
Doctrine: Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Rejected alternatives: kuasa Allah yang bekerja dalam-Nya (God’s power working in him, the mainstream Islamic Christology category), sifat ketuhanan yang sebahagian (a partial divine quality)
Original: θεότης
Category: Christology
The single most direct possible textual collision with tawhid available anywhere in Colossians: the complete divine essence, not a portion, attribute, or emanation, permanently and bodily indwells a human being. Must never be softened. Always route to human theologian review (Kolose 2:9).
Medium-High Risk Terms
Human Tradition
Approved rendering: Tradisi manusia
Transliteration: trah-DEE-see mah-NOO-see-ah
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Rejected alternatives: adat (Malay customary law/custom, which carries real legal and social force and must not be disparaged wholesale)
Original: παράδοσις τῶν ἀνθρώπων
Category: False Teaching
Must clarify this warning targets specifically human religious teaching set against Christ’s authority, not a wholesale disparagement of cultural custom (Kolose 2:8).
Triumph Over Powers
Approved rendering: Mengalahkan/mempermalukan mereka secara terbuka
Transliteration: meng-ah-LAH-kahn
Doctrine: Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ
Rejected alternatives: mengawal mereka (merely controlling them, understating the decisive public defeat)
Original: θριαμβεύσας
Category: Creation
Reinforces that spiritual powers are decisively and publicly defeated, not to be feared as rivals to Christ’s authority (Kolose 2:15).
Hidden With Christ In God
Approved rendering: Tersembunyi bersama-sama Kristus di dalam Allah
Transliteration: ter-sem-BOO-nyee ber-SAH-mah-sah-mah
Doctrine: Union with Christ
Rejected alternatives: disembunyikan secara fizikal (physically hidden, a literal-spatial misreading)
Original: κέκρυπται σὺν τῷ Χριστῷ ἐν τῷ θεῷ
Category: Union with Christ
A statement of secure present identity and future certainty, not literal spatial concealment (Kolose 3:3).
Renewed In Image Of Creator
Approved rendering: Dibaharui… menurut Gambar Penciptanya
Transliteration: dee-bah-HAH-roo-ee
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Rejected alternatives: diperbaiki (merely improved/repaired, understating the renewal-toward-true-knowledge dimension)
Original: ἀνακαινούμενον εἰς ἐπίγνωσιν κατ’ εἰκόνα τοῦ κτίσαντος αὐτόν
Category: Sanctification
Cross-reference with Gambar (1:15) so the same term’s doctrinal weight is reinforced consistently (Kolose 3:10).
Open Door For Gospel
Approved rendering: Pintu untuk firman itu
Transliteration: PEEN-too OON-took FEER-mahn
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching / Evangelism
Rejected alternatives: peluang berdakwah (an opportunity for dakwah, the specifically Islamic religious-outreach term, per the Romans baseline mission entry’s caution)
Original: θύρα τοῦ λόγου
Category: False Teaching
Route for pastoral/legal-safety review per the Romans baseline evangelism entry; proselytizing Muslims is legally restricted in Malaysia (Kolose 4:3).
