Semantic Analysis

Semantic Analysis — Hebrews (English → Malay)

Methodology

This document analyzes the full text of Hebrews in Koine Greek, chapter by chapter, with the core passage (Hebrews 9:11–28) receiving exhaustive verse-by-verse treatment. For every load-bearing term the following fields are recorded: original word (Greek), transliteration, literal meaning, semantic range, English variants (as rendered across major English versions), contextual theological meaning in Hebrews, and destination-language (Malay) rendering risk.

Any term already established in the baseline Romans Language Package (translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json) is reused exactly and marked “(reuse — Romans TM).” New terms proposed for this curriculum are marked “(NEW)” and are carried forward into 08_core_glossary.md for formal registration. English quotations of the core passage follow the King James Version (public domain) for citation stability; other chapters are summarized rather than quoted in full to keep the document within scope.

Where a term collides with Malaysian Islamic vocabulary or with the specific legal/political sensitivities documented in the baseline (e.g. Allah, murtad, takdir, syafaat), this is flagged explicitly with the same rigor the baseline applied to Romans.

PART 1 — CORE PASSAGE: Hebrews 9:11–28 (Verse-by-Verse)

Hebrews 9:11

“But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building”

Term (Greek)TransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMalay rendering & risk
ἀρχιερεύςarchiereus”chief/ruling priest”the presiding priest, the office holder authorized for the highest cultic acts (esp. Yom Kippur)“high priest”Christ is the High Priest, fulfilling and surpassing the Aaronic officeImam Besar (NEW, established Alkitab convention). High risk: “imam” is the everyday Malay-Islamic term for a mosque prayer leader — a purely liturgical, non-atoning, non-mediatorial role held by any qualified Muslim man. Teaching must state clearly that Christ’s high priesthood involves a once-for-all atoning sacrifice and perpetual intercession, functions no masjid imam performs or claims.
σκηνήskēnē”tent”the Mosaic Tabernacle; by extension, any temporary dwelling; here contrasted as “greater and more perfect""tabernacle”The heavenly, true sanctuary of which the Mosaic tent was a copyKemah Suci (NEW). Medium risk: “kemah” alone means an ordinary camping tent; must be paired with “Suci” and taught with the OT background, since readers lack narrative familiarity with the Mosaic cultus.
ἀχειροποίητοςacheiropoiētos”not made by hand”not of human manufacture; used elsewhere of the resurrection body and of God’s true temple”not made with hands”Marks the heavenly tabernacle as divine, not a human artifactBukan buatan tangan manusia (NEW). Low-Medium risk: descriptive phrase, but must not be confused with the “Penjelmaan” (Incarnation) avatar-risk already flagged in the Romans package — this is about place, not about Christ’s nature.

Hebrews 9:12

“Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.”

TermTransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMalay rendering & risk
αἷμαhaima”blood”literal blood; by metonymy, sacrificial death and life poured out”blood”Christ’s own blood is the atoning substance, unlike animal bloodDarah (NEW — but foundational to the whole curriculum). Critical risk: Malay readers will most readily associate sacrificial “darah/korban” imagery with qurban at Hari Raya Haji, which Islamic teaching frames as commemorative obedience (echoing Ibrahim/Ismail), not as substitutionary, sin-atoning blood applied once for all. This distinction must be taught explicitly at every occurrence.
ἅγιαhagia”holy things/place”here, the heavenly sanctuary (contrast with the earthly “holy place” of 9:2)“holy place,” “sanctuary,” “holy places”The true, heavenly sanctuary Christ enteredTempat Kudus (NEW). Medium risk: must be distinguished contextually from “Tempat Maha Kudus” (Holy of Holies, 9:3) — the same English “holy place” sometimes marks either compartment; Malay rendering must track the Greek referent, not the English gloss, per occurrence.
ἅπαξhapax”once,” “one time”a single, unrepeatable occurrence (distinguished from ἐφάπαξ, “once for all,” used at 9:26 and elsewhere)“once”Christ’s single entry, contrasted with the high priest’s annual entry (9:25)Sekali sahaja (NEW). High doctrinal weight (not lexically risky) — pairs with ἐφάπαξ below; both must be rendered consistently to preserve the once-for-all argument structural to the whole book.
αἰωνία λύτρωσιςaiōnia lytrōsis”eternal ransoming/release”λύτρωσις = release secured by a ransom price (root λύτρον, ransom)“eternal redemption”The redemption Christ obtained is permanent and unrepeatable, unlike the yearly Levitical ritesPenebusan yang kekal (NEW). High risk: “penebusan” is a strong, standard term with no major Islamic-collision risk, but Islamic soteriology has no parallel category of a ransom-price paid by a mediator; must be taught as a distinct concept, not merely “being saved.”

Hebrews 9:13

“For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh”

TermTransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMalay rendering & risk
ῥαντίζωrhantizō”to sprinkle”ritual application of blood or water for cleansing”sprinkling,” “sprinkle”The Levitical rite of applying blood for external ceremonial cleansingMemercikkan (NEW). Medium risk: could be assimilated to Islamic ritual ablution (wudu’) as “just another washing rite.” Teaching must clarify that in Hebrews this is preparatory imagery pointing toward the deeper, conscience-level cleansing accomplished by Christ’s blood (v.14), not an end in itself.
ἁγιάζει (ἁγιάζω)hagiazei (hagiazō)“sanctifies,” “sets apart”the same root as Kudus/Pengudusan in the Romans package”sanctifieth”Ceremonial, external sanctification under the Old Covenant — a real but limited effectMenyucikan/Menguduskan — reuse Pengudusan doctrine family (reuse — Romans TM root). High risk: this verse uses sanctify in a limited, external sense (flesh-level only), which must not be confused with the fuller New Covenant sanctification of the conscience in v.14; a footnote distinguishing the two senses is required.
καθαρότης τῆς σαρκόςkatharotēs tēs sarkos”purity/cleanness of the flesh”external, ceremonial purity”purifying of the flesh”The limited scope of the old rites: outward, bodily purity onlyKesucian jasmani (NEW). Medium risk: explicitly the lesser category contrasted with v.14’s “conscience” — must not be elevated to the moral-purity sense reserved for Kudus elsewhere in this Language Package.

Hebrews 9:14

“How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?”

TermTransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMalay rendering & risk
πνεῦμα αἰώνιονpneuma aiōnion”eternal Spirit”most interpreters take this as the Holy Spirit, through whom Christ’s self-offering was made; some read it of Christ’s own eternal divine nature”eternal Spirit,” “eternal spirit”The self-offering of Christ is a Spirit-empowered, divine act, not a mere human deathRoh yang kekal (NEW; closely tied to Roh Kudus, reuse — Romans TM). Medium risk: readers may wrongly assume this is a different spirit from Roh Kudus, or conversely collapse it into a vague “eternal spirit-nature” abstraction; teaching notes must clarify the referent.
ἄμωμοςamōmos”without blemish/spot”a sacrificial-purity term (cf. unblemished lambs) applied to Christ himself”without spot,” “unblemished”Christ is both the perfect priest and the perfect, sinless sacrificial victimTanpa cacat cela (NEW). Medium risk: Islamic qurban practice also requires an unblemished animal, a genuine point of resonance — but the category shift (a person, not an animal, being the unblemished offering) must be taught explicitly.
συνείδησιςsyneidēsis”conscience,” “co-knowledge”inner moral awareness/self-judgment”conscience”The true target of Christ’s cleansing — not merely outward ritual purity but the inner moral selfHati nurani (NEW). Low-Medium risk: a genuinely resonant, well-understood everyday Malay ethical term; a positive bridge-word, though it must be tied specifically to freedom from guilt over “dead works,” not generalized moral improvement.
νεκρὰ ἔργαnekra erga”dead works”works done under the condemnation of sin, or works that cannot produce life/righteousness”dead works”Contrasted with living faith; works that cannot justify or cleansePerbuatan yang mati (NEW). High risk: dangerously close in surface form to amal soleh (“righteous deeds”), the works-ledger category the baseline Romans package explicitly rejects as a ground of righteousness (see righteousness, imputed_righteousness). Teaching must clarify that “dead works” are not synonymous with “good works done in gratitude” but with any works — including religious ones — attempted apart from Christ’s finished sacrifice.
λατρεύεινlatreuein”to serve/worship” (cultic service)render religious service/worship to a deity”to serve,” “to worship”The purified conscience is now free to serve God in a living relationshipMelayani Allah (NEW; avoid “beribadat”). Medium-High risk: “ibadat/ibadah” is saturated with the Islamic ritual-obligation framework (solat, puasa, zakat, etc. as prescribed acts); “melayani” better preserves the relational, gratitude-based service Hebrews intends, distinct from a checklist of required rites.

Hebrews 9:15

“And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.”

TermTransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMalay rendering & risk
μεσίτηςmesitēs”mediator,” “go-between”one who stands between two parties to secure or ratify an agreement”mediator”Christ personally stands between God and humanity to secure the New CovenantPengantara (NEW). Critical risk: directly touches the tawhid-adjacent conviction that no one stands between Allah and a worshipper apart from Allah’s own mercy; also risks conflation with Perantaraan (baseline “intercession” term, itself flagged Critical for its collision with the Sunni doctrine of syafaat Nabi Muhammad). The two Malay terms must be kept distinct: Pengantara = the person/office (mediator), Perantaraan = the ongoing act (intercession); both must be explicitly taught against the syafaat framework.
καινὴ διαθήκηkainē diathēkē”new covenant”a new, superseding covenant relationship, per Jeremiah 31”new testament,” “new covenant”The covenant inaugurated by Christ’s death, replacing the Sinai covenantPerjanjian Baru (reuse — Romans TM root “Perjanjian”). High risk: “Perjanjian Baru” is also the standard Malay name for the New Testament canon as a whole. Every occurrence in Hebrews must be checked for whether the theological covenant-concept or the book-collection is meant, and disambiguated in surrounding text where confusion is possible.
παράβασιςparabasis”transgression,” “stepping across”a specific violation of a known law/boundary”transgressions”Sins committed under the Sinai covenant that required atoningPelanggaran (NEW). Low risk; reuse alongside Dosa (reuse — Romans TM) as the more legal/technical term for law-violation specifically.
κληρονομίαklēronomia”inheritance”a possession received by right of heirship”inheritance”Believers’ promised eternal inheritance secured by Christ’s deathWarisan (NEW). Medium risk; positively resonant with the culturally comfortable Pengangkatan sebagai anak (adoption) doctrine already in the Romans package — inheritance flows naturally from adoption in Malay family law and custom, a good cultural bridge.
κλητόςklētos”called”those summoned effectually by God”called,” “which are called”Those who receive the promised inheritance are the effectually calledDipanggil (reuse — Romans TM exactly).

Hebrews 9:16–17

“For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.”

TermTransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMalay rendering & risk
διαθήκηdiathēkē”covenant” or “will/testament”dual semantic range in Greek: a solemn covenant and a legal last will — the wordplay driving this argument”testament,” “covenant”Paul’s argument trades on the double meaning: a “testament/will” requires the testator’s death to take effect, just as the New Covenant required Christ’s deathPerjanjian (reuse — Romans TM). High risk (translation-loss, not doctrinal collision): Malay “perjanjian” does not carry the legal “last will and testament” sense that makes vv.16–17’s argument work in Greek/English. A translator’s note is required at this passage to explain the wordplay explicitly in teaching material, since the Malay rendering alone will not convey it.
διαθέμενοςdiathemenos”the one who made the covenant/will”the testator; the one whose death activates the will”testator”Points typologically to Christ as the one whose death activates the New CovenantYang membuat perjanjian/wasiat (NEW). Medium risk; largely a clarity issue tied to the διαθήκη wordplay above.

Hebrews 9:18–20

“Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood. For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people, Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you.”

TermTransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMalay rendering & risk
ἐγκαινίζωenkainizō”to inaugurate/dedicate”to formally establish or renew, especially a covenant or sanctuary”dedicated”The Sinai covenant itself was inaugurated with blood, foreshadowing ChristMeresmikan (NEW). Low-Medium risk; avoid “mentahbiskan,” which in Malay church usage specifically denotes ordaining clergy and would import an unrelated sense.
ῥαντίζω (reuse, v.19–21)rhantizō”to sprinkle”see v.13”sprinkled”Moses’ inaugural sprinkling of the covenant book and the peopleMemercikkan (reuse from v.13 above).
αἷμα τῆς διαθήκηςhaima tēs diathēkēs”blood of the covenant”the specific covenant-ratifying blood”blood of the testament/covenant”Directly echoed by Christ at the Last Supper (“this is my blood of the covenant,” cf. Matt 26:28) — a deliberate cross-reference the curriculum should make explicitDarah perjanjian (reuse Darah + Perjanjian). High risk (consistency): must match whatever rendering is used in the Gospel accounts of the Last Supper elsewhere in this curriculum’s document set.

Hebrews 9:21–22

“Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry. And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.”

TermTransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMalay rendering & risk
λειτουργίαleitourgia”service/ministry” (cultic)the technical term for priestly cultic service”ministry”The vessels and service of the tabernacle, all requiring blood-cleansingPelayanan (NEW). Low risk; prefer over “ibadat” for the same reasons noted at λατρεύειν above.
ἄφεσιςaphesis”release, remission, forgiveness”forgiveness/cancellation of a debt or offense”remission,” “forgiveness”Blood-shedding is the necessary precondition for forgiveness under both covenantsPengampunan (NEW). Medium risk: the baseline Romans package deliberately distinguishes Diperbenarkan (justification, forensic declaration) from mere diampunkan (forgiveness alone) as insufficient for the full doctrine of justification. Here in Hebrews, “remission” (ἄφεσις) is legitimately the point being made — but teaching material must not let readers assume forgiveness alone exhausts the doctrine of salvation taught elsewhere in the curriculum.

Hebrews 9:23

“It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.”

TermTransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMalay rendering & risk
ὑπόδειγμαhypodeigma”example, pattern, copy”a sketch or model representing a greater reality”patterns,” “copies,” “examples”The earthly tabernacle and its furnishings are copies of heavenly realitiesContoh/Gambaran (NEW). Medium risk; must be taught alongside σκιά (shadow, ch. 8, 10) as part of a single “copy vs. reality” argument running through chs. 8–10.
κρείττων θυσίαkreittōn thysia”better sacrifice(s)“κρείττων = comparative “better,” a structural keyword throughout Hebrews (better covenant, better hope, better promises, better country, better resurrection)“better sacrifices”Christ’s one sacrifice is qualitatively superior to the repeated animal sacrificesKorban yang lebih baik (reuse Korban, NEW comparative Lebih baik). Medium risk — see full discussion of Korban at v.26 below and κρείττων at Hebrews 1:4 (Chapter 1 section).

Hebrews 9:24

“For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us”

TermTransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMalay rendering & risk
ἀντίτυποςantitypos”corresponding type,” “copy,” “figure”an image or copy corresponding to an original pattern (τύπος)“figures of the true,” “copies,” “antitype”The earthly sanctuary corresponds to, but is not, the heavenly reality Christ enteredBayangan/tiruan yang benar (NEW). Medium risk; a technical typological term with no natural single Malay equivalent — requires brief explanatory gloss on first use per lesson, per this Language Package’s reading-level standard.
ἐμφανίζωemphanizō”to manifest, appear, present”to make visible/present oneself before someone”to appear”Christ presents himself before God the Father continually, on believers’ behalfMenghadap/menyatakan diri (NEW). Low-Medium risk; ties directly to the ongoing-intercession doctrine (see Perantaraan, reuse — Romans TM, and Hebrews 7:25 below).

Hebrews 9:25–26

“Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others; For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.”

TermTransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMalay rendering & risk
θυσίαthysia”sacrifice”a cultic offering, especially of an animal”sacrifice(s)“The central category of the whole letter: Christ’s self-offering as the ultimate, final sacrificeKorban (NEW — but the single most load-bearing term of the entire curriculum). High-Critical risk: “korban” is the standard Malay word for the Islamic qurban (ritual sacrifice at Hari Raya Haji, commemorating Ibrahim’s obedience). This is a genuine point of shared vocabulary, similar in structure to Kesyukuran (thanksgiving) in the Romans package, but far higher stakes: readers must be explicitly taught that Christ’s korban (a) was of himself, not an animal; (b) actually atones for sin rather than commemorating obedience; and (c) was offered once for all time, never to be repeated — unlike the annual/recurring nature of qurban observance.
ἐφάπαξephapax”once for all”a single act with permanent, unrepeatable effect (stronger than ἅπαξ)“once for all”The decisive theological keyword of the book’s atonement doctrine (also 7:27, 9:12, 10:10)Sekali untuk selama-lamanya (NEW). Critical risk: this phrase carries the entire “Once-for-All Atoning Sacrifice” doctrine named in this curriculum. Must be rendered identically at every occurrence (7:27; 9:12; 9:26; 9:28 [ἅπαξ]; 10:10) to preserve the argument’s cumulative force, and must be distinguished from the repeatable nature of qurban and of the Levitical rites.
συντέλεια τῶν αἰώνωνsynteleia tōn aiōnōn”completion/consummation of the ages”the climactic turning point of redemptive history”end of the world,” “end of the ages,” “culmination of the ages”Christ’s incarnation and sacrifice mark the definitive turning point of historyAkhir zaman (NEW). High risk: “akhir zaman” is also the standard Malay-Islamic term for the eschatological End Times (associated with the coming of Imam Mahdi, the Dajjal, and other Islamic apocalyptic figures and events). Readers may default to a future-apocalyptic reading rather than understanding this as referring to Christ’s first coming as the climax already accomplished. Teaching must clarify the referent is past/accomplished, not a future countdown.
ἀθέτησις ἁμαρτίαςathetēsis hamartias”annulment/putting away of sin”complete removal or cancellation, not mere covering”put away sin”Sin itself is decisively dealt with, not merely postponed or concealedMenghapuskan dosa (NEW). Medium-High risk; must be distinguished from the Levitical “covering” (kapporet) imagery still present in the mercy-seat language (see ἱλαστήριον, Ch. 9 section below) — Hebrews’ point is that Christ’s sacrifice removes sin definitively, going beyond mere ritual covering.

Hebrews 9:27–28

“And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.”

TermTransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMalay rendering & risk
ἀπόκειταιapokeitai”it is laid up/appointed”a divine ordinance or fixed appointment”it is appointed”The universal, fixed reality of death and subsequent judgment for every personTelah ditetapkan Allah (NEW). High risk: surface-similar to the fatalistic takdir framework the Romans package explicitly forbids for providence/election. Avoid the word “takdir” itself; render as a purposive divine ordinance (“ditetapkan oleh Allah”), consistent with Pemeliharaan Allah (reuse — Romans TM), not an impersonal fate.
κρίσιςkrisis”judgment,” “decision”a legal verdict; the final divine reckoning”judgment”Every person faces God’s judgment after deathPenghakiman (NEW). High risk: genuinely resonant with the Islamic Hari Kiamat (Day of Judgment) framework, a positive point of contact — but must be taught alongside Keselamatan and assurance_of_salvation (reuse — Romans TM doctrines) so readers understand judgment for believers is already resolved through Christ’s substitutionary bearing of sin, not an open-ended weighing of deeds (mizan).
ἀναφέρω ἁμαρτίαςanapherō hamartias”to carry up/bear sins”to bear or carry, especially in a sacrificial, substitutionary sense (cf. 7:27; Isaiah 53:12 LXX)“to bear the sins of many”Christ’s substitutionary bearing of the sins of his people — the heart of the atonement doctrineMenanggung dosa (NEW). Critical risk: this is the central substitutionary-atonement term of the whole book; must be taught with full doctrinal weight, distinguished from qurban’s commemorative (non-substitutionary) framing (see Korban above).
δεύτερονdeuteron”second,” “a second time”numeric ordinal, here of Christ’s return”the second time”The certainty of Christ’s future appearing/return (Second Coming)Kali kedua (NEW). Low-Medium risk; straightforward, but ties to broader eschatological teaching that must remain distinct from Islamic end-times expectations (cf. συντέλεια above).
χωρὶς ἁμαρτίαςchōris hamartias”apart from/without sin”either “without a sin-offering” (i.e., not to deal with sin again) or “sinless""without sin”At his second appearing, Christ’s saving work regarding sin is already complete; he returns not to atone again but to consummate salvationTanpa dosa / bukan lagi untuk menanggung dosa (NEW). Medium risk; requires a brief explanatory note distinguishing the two possible senses in English/Greek so translators choose the doctrinally fitting one (the “no further atonement needed” sense, reinforcing ἐφάπαξ above).
σωτηρίαsōtēria”salvation, deliverance”see Romans package”salvation”The final, consummated salvation believers await at Christ’s returnKeselamatan (reuse — Romans TM exactly).

PART 2 — CHAPTER-BY-CHAPTER STUDY OF THE WHOLE BOOK

Chapter 1 — The Son Superior to Angels

TermTransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMalay rendering & risk
υἱός (ὁ Υἱός)huios”son”here, “the Son,” a title of unique divine sonship”Son,” “his Son”God’s climactic revelation is through his own Son, superior to prophets and angels alikeAnak Allah (reuse — Romans TM exactly). Critical: this chapter is the letter’s opening deity-of-Christ argument; the “Sonship of Christ” doctrine flagged Critical in the baseline applies at full force from v.2 onward.
ἄγγελοςangelos”messenger”a created spiritual being who serves God; also, ordinary human messenger”angel(s)“Angels are honored servants, but categorically lesser than the SonMalaikat (NEW). High risk: shared with Iman (the Islamic pillars of faith explicitly include belief in angels — Jibril, Mikail, Israfil, Izrail, etc.), a genuinely resonant category. This is a constructive bridge (Islam, like Hebrews, holds angels as created, non-worshipped beings), but teaching must guard against two opposite errors: (a) treating Christ as merely a superior angel/created being, and (b) missing that the whole chapter’s argument is a direct deity claim, not a rank comparison within a single category of creatures.
κρείττωνkreittōn”better,” “more excellent”comparative — the single most repeated structural keyword in Hebrews”better,” “much better,” “so much better”First occurrence (1:4): the Son’s name/status is “better” than the angels’ — begins the letter’s superiority argument that recurs through every major doctrineLebih baik/lebih mulia (NEW). Medium risk: not lexically dangerous, but must be rendered consistently across all its recurrences (covenant, hope, promises, sacrifices, country, resurrection) so the reader can trace the book’s unifying “better” argument across chapters.
ἀπαύγασμαapaugasma”radiance, effulgence, outshining”light emanating from a source, of the same essence as the source”brightness of his glory,” “radiance of God’s glory”The Son perfectly radiates the Father’s own glory — full deity, not reflected borrowed lightCahaya kemuliaan Allah (NEW). High risk: must be kept distinct from nur (the Sufi Nur Muhammad pre-existent-light devotional tradition already flagged in the Romans package under Kemuliaan); this Language Package continues to avoid “nur” vocabulary for the same reason.
χαρακτήρcharaktēr”exact imprint, stamp”the precise reproduction of an original, as from a die or seal”express image,” “exact representation,” “exact imprint”The Son perfectly and exactly represents God’s own being — not a lesser copyGambaran tepat keperibadian Allah (NEW). High risk; ties directly to deity_of_christ (reuse — Romans TM doctrine), must not be softened to “a good example of God’s character.”
κληρονόμοςklēronomos”heir”one who inherits, by right”heir”The Son is appointed heir of all things — cosmic inheritance, not a lesser statusWaris (NEW). Low-Medium risk; positive cultural bridge (see Warisan, 9:15 above).
πρωτότοκοςprōtotokos”firstborn”the one with primary rank/inheritance rights; not necessarily “first created""firstborn”Christ’s supreme rank and right to worship among the heavenly host (1:6, “let all the angels of God worship him”)Anak Sulung (NEW). Critical risk: “anak sulung” naturally reads as merely “the first of several sons,” risking an Arian-adjacent misunderstanding (one son among others, or a created firstborn) rather than the unique preeminence-in-rank sense intended. Must be taught alongside Anak Allah with explicit clarification that this is a title of supreme rank and worship-worthiness, not birth order among many divine offspring — tawhid sensitivities apply here as much as at “Anak Allah” itself.
θρόνος (of the Son, quoting Ps 45)thronos”throne”seat of royal/divine authority”thy throne, O God”Psalm 45 is applied directly to the Son, addressing him as “God” enthroned foreverTakhta (NEW), applied within the phrase “Takhta-Mu, ya Allah” as addressed to the Son. Critical risk: one of the most direct deity-of-Christ proof texts in the book; must not be softened or the divine address diluted into an honorific.
ἔλαιον ἀγαλλιάσεωςelaion agalliaseōs”oil of gladness”royal/messianic anointing imagery”oil of gladness”Ties the Son’s kingship to messianic anointing — cross-references Kristus (“Anointed One,” reuse — Romans TM)Minyak kegembiraan (NEW). Low risk; a positive cross-reference reinforcing the established Kristus rendering rather than reopening the Al-Masih naming question.

Chapter 2 — Warning Against Neglect; Christ’s Solidarity with Humanity

TermTransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMalay rendering & risk
γεύομαι θανάτουgeuomai thanatou”to taste death”idiom for experiencing death firsthand”taste death”Christ genuinely and personally experienced death for everyone — presupposes real death (cross-reference Kebangkitan, reuse — Romans TM Critical entry)Merasai maut (NEW). Medium-High risk: reinforces, and must never be allowed to soften, the “real historical death” requirement already Critical in the Romans package regarding the Resurrection doctrine.
ἀρχηγόςarchēgos”leader, founder, pioneer, originator”one who originates and leads the way for others to follow”captain,” “author,” “founder,” “pioneer”Christ as the trailblazing founder of salvation, who leads “many sons” to gloryPengasas keselamatan (NEW). Medium risk; a positive, non-collision-prone christological title requiring only brief explanation since it is not a common Malay religious term.
ἁγιάζωhagiazō”to sanctify, set apart”see Pengudusan (Romans TM)“sanctify”Christ and his people share one origin/family, both “set apart”Menguduskan / Pengudusan (reuse — Romans TM exactly).
διάβολοςdiabolos”slanderer, accuser”proper title for Satan, the tempter/accuser”devil”The devil, who holds the power of death, is defeated through Christ’s deathIblis (NEW). Low-Medium risk: notably, Iblis is the very same name/figure recognized in Islamic tradition (the being who refused to bow to Adam). This is a rare point of direct narrative overlap; teaching should leverage the shared recognition while clarifying the New Testament’s specific claim that Christ’s death strips the devil of his power over death, a distinctly Christian resolution not paralleled in the Quranic Iblis narrative.
ἱλάσκομαιhilaskomai”to propitiate, make atonement/reconciliation”to turn away wrath through an atoning act”make reconciliation for,” “make propitiation for”Christ, as merciful and faithful high priest, atones for the sins of the people (2:17)Mengadakan pendamaian bagi dosa (NEW). Critical risk: first occurrence in the book of the propitiation/atonement concept central to “The Once-for-All Atoning Sacrifice” doctrine; must not be flattened into generic “reconciliation” language divorced from wrath-bearing substitution.
πειράζωpeirazō”to test, tempt, try”testing/temptation, whether from without or from evil intent”tempted”Christ’s own tested humanity equips him to help the temptedDicubai (NEW). Low risk.

Chapter 3 — Christ Superior to Moses; Warning Against Unbelief

TermTransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMalay rendering & risk
ἀπόστολος καὶ ἀρχιερεὺς τῆς ὁμολογίας ἡμῶνapostolos kai archiereus tēs homologias hēmōn”apostle and high priest of our confession”ὁμολογία = a formal, public acknowledgment/profession”apostle and high priest of our profession/confession”Christ holds both the sending (apostolic) and mediating (priestly) offices of our professed faithRasul dan Imam Besar pengakuan iman kita (reuse Rasul, Imam Besar — Romans TM + Ch.9 core). High risk: Rasul applied to Christ himself (not merely to Paul or the Twelve) is a notable and doctrinally significant extension; must be taught carefully alongside the existing apostleship doctrine note in the baseline (Rasul as Islamic prophet-category collision) since here it describes Christ’s own unique sent status, distinct from human apostles.
θεράπωνtherapōn”servant, attendant”a trusted, honored servant (used of Moses)“servant”Moses served faithfully in God’s house as a servant; Christ rules over it as SonHamba/pelayan (NEW). Medium risk: Moses (Nabi Musa) holds very high status in Islamic prophetology; this chapter’s argument (Christ > Moses) parallels the existing Christ > angels and Christ > Levitical priesthood arguments and should be flagged alongside them for careful, non-dismissive teaching, honoring Moses’ real (θεράπων) status while showing the Son’s greater (κρείττων) glory.
παρρησίαparrēsia”boldness, confidence, freedom of speech”confident, unashamed access/speech”boldness,” “confidence”Believers are exhorted to hold fast their confidence and hope firm to the endKeyakinan (NEW). High risk: this confident posture toward God (developed further in chs. 4 and 10) stands in real tension with the more common devotional posture of humble uncertainty regarding final standing before Allah found in much popular Malay-Muslim piety; ties directly to the baseline’s Critical assurance_of_salvation doctrine and should be flagged for the same theologian-level review.
σκληρύνω τὰς καρδίαςsklērynō tas kardias”to harden the hearts”to become obstinate/unresponsive”harden your hearts”Warning drawn from Israel’s wilderness rebellion (Psalm 95)Mengeraskan hati (NEW). Medium risk; a natural, non-collision Malay idiom.
παραπικρασμόςparapikrasmos”rebellion, provocation, embitterment”Israel’s specific wilderness provocation at Meribah”provocation,” “rebellion”Named historical instance of unbelief-driven rebellion, held up as warningPemberontakan (NEW). Low-Medium risk.
ἀπιστίαapistia”unbelief, faithlessness”the negative counterpart of Iman (reuse — Romans TM)“unbelief”The root cause that kept the wilderness generation from entering God’s restKetidakpercayaan (NEW). Medium risk; must be taught in direct contrast with Iman.
ἀφίστημι (ἀποστῆναι ἀπὸ θεοῦ ζῶντος)aphistēmi (apostēnai)“to stand away from, depart, fall away”to defect or apostatize from a prior commitment”depart from the living God,” “fall away”The first explicit apostasy warning in the book: departing from allegiance to the living GodMurtad daripada Allah yang hidup / meninggalkan iman kepada Allah yang hidup (NEW). CRITICAL — flag for both human theologian AND legal-sensitivity review. See full discussion under “The Danger of Apostasy” in the doctrine risk registry entry to be created for this curriculum: murtad is not a neutral theological word in Malaysia but the specific term for a Muslim’s exit from Islam, subject to active state Islamic administrative and Syariah court processes in several Malaysian states. Using it for a warning to Christian readers risks importing this entire state-legal apparatus into the reader’s mind. A softer descriptive phrase (“meninggalkan iman kepada Allah yang hidup,” “berpaling daripada Allah yang hidup”) should be considered as the primary rendering, with “murtad” reserved only for direct doctrinal explanation of the difference between the two contexts, never as the default running text term.

Chapter 4 — The Promised Rest; the Living Word; the Sympathetic High Priest

TermTransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMalay rendering & risk
κατάπαυσιςkatapausis”rest, resting place”cessation from labor; the Promised Land rest; ultimately eschatological rest in God”rest”The rest that remains for God’s people, greater than Joshua’s conquest-restPerhentian (NEW). Medium risk: could be read as merely a this-worldly respite (a day off) rather than the eschatological, relational rest in God’s presence Hebrews intends; needs explicit unpacking.
σαββατισμόςsabbatismos”Sabbath observance/rest”a Sabbath-keeping rest, specifically”Sabbath rest,” “Sabbath-keeping”The final, eschatological Sabbath rest awaiting God’s peoplePerhentian Sabat (NEW). Medium risk; must not be reduced to a call to observe a literal weekly Sabbath day as a legal requirement — the point is typological/eschatological fulfillment, not calendrical law.
λόγος τοῦ θεοῦ ζῶν καὶ ἐνεργήςlogos tou theou zōn kai energēs”word of God, living and active/effective”God’s spoken/written word as a living, penetrating agent”word of God… living and active/powerful”Scripture as God’s own living, judging voice, not a static textFirman Allah yang hidup dan berkuasa (NEW). High risk: ties directly to the baseline’s Critical inspiration_of_scripture doctrine and its collision with tahrif (the belief the Bible has been textually corrupted); this verse’s claim that God’s word is living and active must be taught alongside, not instead of, direct engagement with the tahrif objection.
συμπαθέωsympatheō”to sympathize, feel with”shared feeling, empathetic solidarity”touched with the feeling of,” “sympathize”Christ, having been tempted in every way, empathizes with human weaknessBersimpati/turut merasai (NEW). Low-Medium risk; a strong positive bridge term emphasizing Christ’s genuine humanity and compassion.
θρόνος τῆς χάριτοςthronos tēs charitos”throne of grace”the place of divine favor and access”throne of grace”Believers may approach God’s throne confidently because of Christ’s priesthoodTakhta kasih kurnia (reuse Kasih kurnia — Romans TM). High risk: the boldness of approach implied here (see παρρησία above) sits in real tension with typical devotional distance from Allah’s throne (‘Arsy) in popular piety; must be taught as a distinctive, audacious New Covenant privilege, not softened into generic reverent petition.

Chapter 5 — Christ’s Qualifications as High Priest; Warning Against Spiritual Immaturity

TermTransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMalay rendering & risk
τάξις Μελχισέδεκtaxis Melchisedek”order/rank of Melchizedek”a priestly line/category distinct from the Levitical line”order of Melchizedek”Christ’s priesthood is of a different, superior category, without Levitical genealogyMenurut peraturan Melkisedek (NEW). Medium risk primarily due to unfamiliarity rather than collision: Melchizedek does not appear in the Quran, so Malay-Muslim readers have no pre-existing frame of reference (unlike Daud, Musa, or Isa); requires background narrative teaching from Genesis 14.
ἔμαθεν ἀφ᾽ ὧν ἔπαθεν τὴν ὑπακοήνemathen aph’ hōn epathen tēn hypakoēn”he learned obedience from what he suffered”experiential learning through suffering”learned obedience by the things which he suffered”Christ’s genuine human experience of suffering, not a claim of prior disobedienceBelajar taat melalui penderitaan-Nya (NEW; reuse Ketaatan iman family — Romans TM). Critical risk: must be carefully taught so as never to imply Christ was previously disobedient or morally imperfect; this describes the reality of his incarnate human experience (cf. Penjelmaan, reuse — Romans TM Critical entry), not moral growth from a sinful or deficient state.
τελειωθείς (τελειόω)teleiōtheis (teleioō)“having been made perfect/complete”brought to the intended goal, qualified, completed — not “made sinless from a sinful state""being made perfect”Christ was qualified/completed for his priestly office through his incarnate sufferingDisempurnakan (NEW). Critical risk: risk of collision with the Sufi/Islamic insan kamil (“perfect man”) concept, and risk of misreading as implying prior moral imperfection in Christ. Must be taught as vocational/functional completion (being fully qualified and equipped for the priestly office), not moral perfecting of a previously flawed nature.
αἴτιος σωτηρίας αἰωνίουaitios sōtērias aiōniou”source/cause of eternal salvation”the originating source”author of eternal salvation”Christ is the source of the salvation the whole book expoundsSumber keselamatan yang kekal (reuse Keselamatan — Romans TM).
γάλα / στερεὰ τροφήgala / sterea trophē”milk / solid food”metaphor for elementary vs. mature teaching”milk… strong meat/solid food”Rebuke for spiritual immaturity; readers should be ready for deeper doctrineSusu / makanan keras (NEW). Low risk; a universally intelligible metaphor.

Chapter 6 — Warning Against Apostasy; the Certainty of God’s Promise

TermTransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMalay rendering & risk
μετάνοια ἀπὸ νεκρῶν ἔργωνmetanoia apo nekrōn ergōn”repentance from dead works”a fundamental, once-for-all reorientation”repentance from dead works”Foundational, non-repeated turning from works-righteousness toward faith in ChristPertaubatan daripada perbuatan yang mati (NEW). Medium risk: taubat/pertaubatan is a shared Arabic-loan term genuinely resonant with Islamic devotional vocabulary (a real point of contact, unlike takdir/syafaat/murtad) — but Islamic tawbah operates as a repeatable act of turning back after each sin within a deeds-restoration framework, whereas Hebrews presents repentance as a singular foundational reorientation away from any works-based approach to God, never to be relaid as a “foundation” again (6:1). This distinction should be taught explicitly.
παραπεσόντας (παραπίπτω)parapesontas (parapiptō)“having fallen away, fallen beside”to fall away decisively from a former position of faith”if they shall fall away”The severe warning that decisively falling away makes renewal to repentance impossible for such a caseMurtad / gugur daripada iman (NEW). CRITICAL — same legal-sensitivity flag as Chapter 3’s ἀφίστημι entry above. This is the single most theologically severe apostasy warning in the book (6:4-6) and must be routed to human theologian review together with explicit legal-context awareness of Malaysia’s state Islamic apostasy (murtad) enactments; recommend “gugur daripada iman” (falling away from the faith) as the primary running-text rendering, reserving “murtad” for explicit comparative/explanatory footnotes only.
ἀνασταυρόωanastauroō”to crucify again/afresh”vivid image of re-enacting Christ’s crucifixion through apostasy”crucify… afresh”The severity of apostasy is likened to re-crucifying ChristMenyalibkan semula (NEW). Medium risk; vivid, must be handled with pastoral care given its severity.
ἄγκυραankyra”anchor”a ship’s anchor, stabilizing image”anchor”Hope in Christ is described as a sure and steadfast anchor for the soulSauh (NEW). Low risk; a natural, positive maritime metaphor well understood in the Malay Archipelago’s seafaring culture.
πρόδρομοςprodromos”forerunner”one who goes ahead to prepare the way”forerunner”Christ has entered the heavenly sanctuary ahead of believers, as their forerunnerPerintis (NEW). Low-Medium risk.
ὅρκοςhorkos”oath”a solemn, binding sworn statement”oath”God’s oath to Abraham (and to Christ, in ch.7) guarantees the certainty of his promiseSumpah (NEW). Medium risk; oaths carry real weight in Malay/Islamic custom too (a positive point of resonance), but must be taught that God’s oath is uniquely self-guaranteeing (“he sware by himself,” 6:13), unlike ordinary human oath-taking.

Chapter 7 — Melchizedek and the Superior, Eternal Priesthood

TermTransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMalay rendering & risk
ΜελχισέδεκMelchisedekproper name, “king of righteousness”king of Salem, priest of the Most High God (Gen 14)“Melchizedek”A priest-king type of Christ: eternal, without recorded genealogy, superior to LeviMelkisedek (NEW, proper name transliteration). Medium risk; see ch.5 note on unfamiliarity.
ἀγενεαλόγητοςagenealogētos”without genealogy/lineage recorded”lacking a recorded ancestral line”without descent,” “without genealogy”Melchizedek’s priesthood is not grounded in ancestry, unlike the Levitical priesthoodTanpa salasilah (NEW). Medium-High risk (cultural): this is a contrast point rather than a resonance point — Malay culture places strong positive value on salasilah diraja (royal genealogical lineage) as the basis of legitimate authority, already flagged in the baseline under davidic_covenant and seed_of_david. Here Hebrews’ argument runs against the genealogy-based legitimacy model, teaching that Christ’s priestly authority rests on the power of an indestructible life (7:16), not on ancestral succession — a point that may require more, not less, cultural unpacking than the Davidic-descent argument does.
δεκάτηdekatē”a tenth, tithe”the tenth portion given to a priest/king”tithes”Abraham’s tithe to Melchizedek demonstrates Melchizedek’s (and so Christ’s) superiority to LeviPersepuluhan (NEW). Low risk; standard term.
νόμος ἐντολῆς σαρκίνης / δύναμις ζωῆς ἀκαταλύτουnomos entolēs sarkinēs / dynamis zōēs akatalytou”law of a fleshly commandment / power of an indestructible life”contrast between a genealogically-based legal requirement and an inherently unending life”law of a carnal commandment… power of an endless life”The basis of Christ’s priesthood is his own indestructible, resurrection life, not legal descentHukum berdasarkan keturunan jasmani / kuasa hidup yang tidak berkesudahan (NEW). High risk; core to the doctrine “Superiority of Christ over… the Levitical Priesthood” — must be unpacked carefully as it is conceptually dense.
ἔγγυοςengyos”guarantee, surety”one who personally guarantees an obligation”surety”Christ personally guarantees the New CovenantPenjamin (NEW). Medium risk; a good, legally-resonant Malay commercial-law concept (guarantor) that can be leveraged as a positive bridge.
ἀπαράβατοςaparabatos”unchangeable, permanent, non-transferable”not passing to a successor”unchangeable” (priesthood)Christ’s priesthood does not pass to a successor, unlike the Levitical priests who diedTidak berpindah/kekal (NEW). Medium risk.
ἐντυγχάνειν (ὑπὲρ αὐτῶν)entynchanein”to intercede, plead on behalf of”to make petition on someone’s behalf”to make intercession”Christ’s perpetual, living intercession for believers before GodPerantaraan (reuse — Romans TM exactly). Critical: same syafaat collision flagged in the baseline; this occurrence (7:25) is arguably the strongest single verse for teaching Christ’s unique, sufficient, ongoing intercessory role against the standard Sunni doctrine of Muhammad’s Judgment-Day intercession.
ὅσιος, ἄκακος, ἀμίαντος, κεχωρισμένος ἀπὸ τῶν ἁμαρτωλῶνhosios, akakos, amiantos, kechōrismenos apo tōn hamartōlōn”holy, guileless, undefiled, separated from sinners”a cluster of terms describing Christ’s moral perfection and separateness”holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners”Christ’s sinless qualification as the perfect high priestKudus, tidak bercela, tidak tercemar, terpisah daripada orang berdosa (reuse Kudus — Romans TM). High risk (consistency): must reuse Kudus, not Suci, per the baseline’s established moral-vs-ritual purity distinction.

Chapter 8 — The New Covenant Announced

TermTransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMalay rendering & risk
μεσίτης κρείττονος διαθήκηςmesitēs kreittonos diathēkēs”mediator of a better covenant”combines μεσίτης and κρείττων already treated”mediator of a better covenant”Christ mediates a covenant categorically superior to SinaiPengantara perjanjian yang lebih baik (reuse Pengantara, Perjanjian, Lebih baik).
καινὴ διαθήκη (Jeremiah 31 citation)kainē diathēkē”new covenant”see 9:15 above; here the full OT citation (Jer 31:31-34) is quoted at length”new covenant”The New Covenant promises internalized law, universal knowledge of God, and definitive forgiveness (“their sins… will I remember no more”)Perjanjian Baru (reuse from 9:15 discussion above). Critical: the direct quotation of Jeremiah 31 makes this the doctrinal anchor text for “The New Covenant versus the Old”; the ambiguity with the New Testament canon name (noted at 9:15) is most acute here and requires an explicit clarifying note in teaching material.
ὑπόδειγμα καὶ σκιάhypodeigma kai skia”example/copy and shadow”see 9:23 above”example and shadow”The earthly priesthood and tabernacle are a shadow/copy of heavenly, true realitiesContoh dan bayangan (reuse from Ch.9 discussion).

ἅγια / Ἅγια Ἁγίωνhagia / hagia hagiōn”holy place / holy of holies”the two compartments of the tabernacle”the sanctuary” / “the Holiest of all,” “the Most Holy Place”The two-chambered structure, with the innermost chamber entered only once yearly by the high priestTempat Kudus / Tempat Maha Kudus (NEW; both full entries, see Part 1 discussion at v.12).
ἱλαστήριονhilastērion”mercy seat,” “place of atonement,” “propitiatory cover”the gold cover of the ark, where blood was sprinkled on the Day of Atonement; also used of Christ himself as the ultimate ἱλαστήριον (Rom 3:25, outside this curriculum’s baseline but conceptually linked)“mercy seat,” “propitiatory,” “atonement cover”The precise place where atoning blood was applied under the Old Covenant, fulfilled in ChristTempat Pendamaian (NEW). Critical risk: central atonement-imagery term; must be clearly taught as the specific locus of God’s wrath being propitiated through sprinkled blood, not a generic word for “reconciliation,” and must connect forward to Christ’s own once-for-all fulfillment of this image in the core passage.
διόρθωσιςdiorthōsis”reformation, setting right, new order”a time of correction/renewal”time of reformation”The old cultic system was provisional, imposed only “until the time of reformation” — i.e., until ChristZaman pembaharuan (NEW). Medium risk.

εἰκών (contrast with σκιά)eikōn”image, form, exact representation”the substantial reality, as opposed to a mere shadow”very image”The Law is a shadow of good things to come, not the very substance itselfRupa/gambar sebenar (NEW). Medium risk; completes the shadow/reality argument begun at 8:5 and 9:23-24.
σῶμα κατηρτίσω μοι (Ps 40 citation)sōma katērtisō moi”a body you have prepared for me”citation applied to Christ’s incarnation”a body hast thou prepared me”Direct scriptural warrant for the Incarnation: the eternal Son takes on a genuine human body to accomplish the Father’s willReuse Penjelmaan (Incarnation — Romans TM Critical entry) for the doctrinal category; render literally “Engkau telah menyediakan tubuh bagi-Ku”. Critical: a key proof-text for Incarnation doctrine; must reinforce, not contradict, the baseline’s insistence on a permanent, non-episodic assumption of true human nature.
ἐκάθισεν ἐν δεξιᾷ τοῦ θεοῦekathisen en dexia tou theou”he sat down at the right hand of God”royal enthronement posture, contrasted with priests who “stand” (never sit) at their unfinished, repeated duties”sat down on the right hand of God”Christ’s sitting signifies his finished, completed work — no more sacrifice is neededDuduk di sebelah kanan Allah (NEW). Critical: a decisive image of the Once-for-All doctrine and of Christ’s exaltation/lordship; ties directly to lordship_of_christ (reuse — Romans TM Critical doctrine).
ὁδὸς πρόσφατος καὶ ζῶσαhodos prosphatos kai zōsa”a new and living way”a freshly opened, life-giving path of access”new and living way”Believers now have direct, living access into God’s presence through Christ’s flesh (the veil)Jalan yang baharu dan hidup (NEW). High risk: ties to the “Access to God through Christ’s Blood” doctrine; must preserve the directness of access (no further priestly mediation required for the individual believer’s approach), a genuinely distinctive New Covenant claim.
πληροφορία πίστεωςplērophoria pisteōs”full assurance of faith”complete confidence/certainty”full assurance of faith”Believers may draw near with complete confidence — reinforces assurance_of_salvationKeyakinan penuh iman (reuse Iman — Romans TM). Critical: direct link to the baseline’s Critical Assurance of Salvation doctrine; the present-tense certainty here again contrasts with the probabilistic hope characteristic of much popular Islamic eschatology.
λελουσμένοι τὸ σῶμα ὕδατι καθαρῷlelousmenoi to sōma hydati katharō”bodies washed with pure water”baptismal allusion”bodies washed with pure water”Points to baptism as the outward sign of inward cleansing already accomplished by Christ’s bloodTubuh dibasuh dengan air yang bersih (NEW). Medium risk: risk of assimilation to ritual ablution (wudu’) as a repeatable purity requirement; must be taught as pointing to a once-for-all spiritual reality symbolized in baptism, not a repeated ritual washing.
ἐπισυναγωγήepisynagōgē”gathering together, assembling”corporate assembly”assembling of ourselves together”Exhortation not to forsake corporate Christian gatheringPerhimpunan/berhimpun bersama (NEW). Low-Medium risk; ties to Gereja and Persekutuan (reuse — Romans TM) as the practice that embodies both doctrines.
ἑκουσίως ἁμαρτάνεινhekousiōs hamartanein”to sin willingly/deliberately”deliberate, knowing sin, as opposed to sin of weakness”sin wilfully”The severe warning against deliberate, ongoing rejection of the truth after full knowledgeSengaja berbuat dosa (NEW). Critical: central to “The Danger of Apostasy and Warning Passages”; must be routed to human theologian review together with the murtad-adjacent warnings in chs. 3 and 6.
κοινὸν ἡγήσασθαι (τὸ αἷμα τῆς διαθήκης)koinon hēgēsasthai”to regard as common/unholy”to treat the sacred as ordinary/profane”counting the blood of the covenant… unholy/common thing”The severity of apostasy is measured by contempt for Christ’s atoning bloodMenganggap darah perjanjian sebagai perkara biasa/najis (NEW). Critical; reinforces the weight of Darah doctrine.
ἐνυβρίζειν τὸ πνεῦμα τῆς χάριτοςenybrizein to pneuma tēs charitos”to insult/outrage the Spirit of grace”to treat with contempt”done despite unto the Spirit of grace”Apostasy is ultimately an offense against the Holy Spirit himselfMenghina Roh kasih kurnia (reuse Roh Kudus, Kasih kurnia — Romans TM). Critical.
ὑπόστασιςhypostasis”substance, confidence, underlying reality”firm confidence; also the foundational technical term reused at 11:1”confidence” (10:34); “substance” (11:1)The steadfast confidence believers must not cast away, later defined as the very essence of faith itselfKeyakinan/dasar (NEW; full entry given at 11:1 below).
δίκαιος ἐκ πίστεως ζήσεταιdikaios ek pisteōs zēsetai”the righteous shall live by faith”citation of Habakkuk 2:4”the just shall live by faith”The thesis-level statement that righteous standing before God is by faith, not works — identical to Romans 1:17’s citation of the same OT textReuse Kebenaran and Iman (Romans TM exactly) in identical wording to Romans 1:17. Critical (consistency rule): per the baseline’s cross-document consistency requirement (“Same rendering of Romans 1:16–17 across all documents”), this citation in Hebrews 10:38 must match the Romans 1:17 rendering verbatim.

Chapter 11 — The Faith of the Old Testament Saints

TermTransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMalay rendering & risk
πίστις…ὑπόστασις…ἔλεγχοςpistis…hypostasis…elenchos”faith is the substance/confidence of things hoped for, the evidence/conviction of things not seen”ὑπόστασις = underlying reality/confident assurance; ἔλεγχος = proof, conviction, evidence”faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen”The letter’s programmatic definition of faith, grounding the entire chapter’s roll call of OT saintsIman ialah dasar/keyakinan bagi perkara yang diharapkan, bukti bagi perkara yang tidak dilihat (reuse Iman — Romans TM; ὑπόστασις/ἔλεγχος NEW). Critical: this is the defining verse for the “Faith of the Old Testament Saints” doctrine; ensure Iman here is understood as the same personal-trust category defined in Romans, now demonstrated across redemptive history, not a different or lesser Old-Covenant “faith.”
μαρτυρέω (ἐμαρτυρήθησαν)martyreō”to testify, bear witness, commend”to be attested/approved”obtained a good report,” “were commended,” “gained approval”Scripture itself testifies to the genuineness of the OT saints’ faithDiperakui/disaksikan (NEW). Low-Medium risk.
μετατίθημι (of Enoch, μετετέθη)metatithēmi (metetethē)“to transfer, translate, take up”to be taken up without dying”was translated,” “was taken up”Enoch was taken up without experiencing deathDiangkat (tanpa mengalami maut) (NEW). High risk: this description of Enoch is a genuine biblical instance of a no-death “taken up” account — but it must be explicitly and carefully distinguished from the Qur’an’s no-death account of Jesus (4:157), which the baseline’s Kebangkitan/resurrection entry already flags as Critical. Teaching must clarify Enoch’s case is a unique, unrepeated exception, and is never to be used to suggest Christ’s death-then-resurrection pattern could likewise have been a no-death “taking up.”
ξένοι καὶ παρεπίδημοιxenoi kai parepidēmoi”strangers and sojourners/pilgrims”resident aliens, temporary dwellers”strangers and pilgrims”The patriarchs lived as temporary residents awaiting a better, heavenly homelandOrang asing dan pengembara (NEW). Low-Medium risk; broadly positive resonance with pilgrimage imagery, though care should be taken not to conflate with the specifically Islamic haj pilgrimage category.
προσενήνοχεν Ἀβραὰμ τὸν Ἰσαάκprosenēnochen Abraam ton Isaak”Abraham has offered up Isaac”the binding/near-sacrifice of Isaac (Gen 22)“Abraham offered up Isaac”Abraham’s faith is demonstrated in his willingness to sacrifice his son, trusting God’s power to raise the deadAbraham telah mempersembahkan Ishak (proper name reuse: Abraham, per baseline transliteration standard). CRITICAL cultural-doctrinal flag: mainstream Sunni Islamic tradition in Malaysia (following the majority, though not unanimous, view) identifies the son nearly sacrificed as Ismail (Ishmael), not Isaac (Ishak) — this is the foundational narrative behind the Hari Raya Haji qurban observance. Hebrews 11:17 names Isaac explicitly, following the Genesis account. This point of direct scriptural difference must be flagged for human theologian review and handled with pastoral care, presented as a factual point of textual difference between the Bible and Islamic tradition rather than as a polemical correction.
ὀνειδισμὸς τοῦ Χριστοῦoneidismos tou Christou”the reproach of Christ”shame/disgrace endured for Christ’s sake”the reproach of Christ”Moses considered suffering for the coming Messiah greater wealth than Egypt’s treasuresPenghinaan kerana Kristus (reuse Kristus — Romans TM). Medium risk.

Medium-High risk: requires careful teaching that this describes redemptive-historical fulfillment and unity between the Old and New Covenant believers in Christ, not a claim that the OT saints’ faith or standing before God was somehow deficient or illegitimate on its own terms.

Chapter 12 — The Race of Faith; Divine Discipline; Mount Sinai and Mount Zion

Critical; a summary christological title for the whole book’s argument.
παιδείαpaideia”discipline, training, instruction” (often through correction)fatherly formative discipline”chastening,” “discipline”God’s discipline of his children is proof of genuine sonship, not rejectionDidikan (NEW). Low-Medium risk; positive resonance with the Bapa/Pengangkatan sebagai anak (adoption) family already established as culturally comfortable in the Romans package — discipline as a mark of true fatherly love fits naturally into Malay family values.
νόθοιnothoi”illegitimate children,” “bastards”children without legal standing/inheritance rights”bastards,” “illegitimate”Those never disciplined by God show they are not truly his childrenAnak tak sah taraf (NEW). Medium-High risk (social sensitivity): this is genuinely stigmatizing terminology in Malay culture and must be handled with pastoral delicacy; recommend softer descriptive phrasing in devotional contexts (“anak yang tidak diakui,” “bukan anak yang sah”) while preserving the contrastive point (true sons receive discipline; illegitimate children do not share full inheritance rights) tied to the adoption doctrine.
Πατὴρ τῶν πνευμάτωνPatēr tōn pneumatōn”Father of spirits”God as the ultimate spiritual Father, contrasted with human fathers”Father of spirits”Distinguishes God’s perfect fatherly discipline from that of imperfect human fathersBapa segala roh (reuse Bapa — Romans TM). High risk (reuse of Critical baseline term); ensure the relational-adoptive sense already established for Bapa is maintained here too, not literalized as physical begetting.
πρωτοτόκια (Esau’s)prōtotokia”birthright”inheritance rights of the firstborn”birthright”Esau’s contempt for his birthright is a warning example against apostasy for temporal gainHak kesulungan (reuse Anak Sulung family). High risk; ties directly to the apostasy-warning doctrine as a cautionary type.

Σιὼν ὄρει…Ἰερουσαλὴμ ἐπουρανίῳSiōn orei…Ierousalēm epouraniō”Mount Zion…heavenly Jerusalem”the eschatological, heavenly city, contrasted with earthly Sinai”mount Sion…heavenly Jerusalem”Believers have already come to the heavenly, eschatological reality, not merely a future hopeBukit Sion…Yerusalem Syurgawi (NEW). Medium risk; positive eschatological imagery, though “Yerusalem” carries the same contemporary geopolitical sensitivity flagged for Israel in the baseline — handle with the same pastoral awareness.
πανήγυριςpanēgyris”festal gathering, joyful assembly”a festival assembly, joyous celebratory gathering”general assembly”The joyful heavenly assembly believers now belong toPerhimpunan raya (NEW). Low-Medium risk.
ἐκκλησία πρωτοτόκωνekklēsia prōtotokōn”assembly/church of the firstborn”combines Gereja (reuse) and πρωτότοκος (reuse)“church of the firstborn”All believers share, corporately, in Christ’s own “firstborn” status and inheritanceGereja anak-anak sulung (reuse Gereja, Anak Sulung). Medium-High risk; must clarify this is a corporate title for all believers united to Christ, not a claim of many independent “firstborn” sons alongside Christ’s own unique Sonship.
αἷμα ῥαντισμοῦ…κρεῖττον λαλοῦν παρὰ τὸν Ἅβελhaima rhantismou…kreitton laloun para ton Habel”blood of sprinkling…speaking better things than Abel”reuse ῥαντίζω, κρείττων”blood of sprinkling that speaketh better things than that of Abel”Christ’s blood pleads for mercy/life, unlike Abel’s blood which cried for vengeanceDarah pemercikan yang berkata lebih baik daripada darah Habel (reuse Darah, Lebih baik). Critical (atonement doctrine).
σαλεύω / ἀσάλευτοςsaleuō / asaleutos”to shake” / “unshakeable”eschatological shaking of creation vs. the unshakeable kingdom”shaken”…“cannot be shaken”The believer’s inheritance is an unshakeable kingdom, unlike all earthly, shakeable structuresDigoncangkan / tidak tergoncang (NEW). Medium risk; ties to Kerajaan Allah (reuse — Romans TM), which the baseline already flags for its double meaning as Malaysia’s ordinary word for “government” — here the point (an eternal, unshakeable kingdom) should be taught as a deliberate contrast to any earthly, changeable political kerajaan.

Chapter 13 — Concluding Exhortations

TermTransliterationLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMalay rendering & risk
φιλαδελφίαphiladelphia”brotherly love”love among believers as family”brotherly love”Exhortation to continued mutual love within the churchKasih persaudaraan (NEW). Low risk; note the baseline already prefers Persekutuan over “persaudaraan” for fellowship to avoid ethnic/bumiputera-solidarity overtones — here “kasih persaudaraan” functions adjectivally for a specific virtue (love), a narrower and lower-risk usage than the baseline’s fellowship concern, but the same ethnic-solidarity caution should still be noted in teaching material.
φιλοξενίαphiloxenia”hospitality,” lit. “love of strangers”welcoming outsiders/strangers”hospitality,” “entertain strangers”Exhortation to hospitality, with the reminder that some have entertained angels unawareKeramahan/kasih kepada orang asing (NEW). Low risk; positive, culturally resonant virtue (hospitality is highly valued in Malay adat).
τίμιος ὁ γάμοςtimios ho gamos”marriage is honorable/precious”marriage held in high esteem”marriage is honourable in all”Affirms the goodness and honor of marriagePerkahwinan harus dihormati (NEW). Low risk; strong positive cultural resonance.
Οὐ μή σε ἀνῶ οὐδ᾽ οὐ μή σε ἐγκαταλίπωou mē se anō oud’ ou mē se enkatalipō”I will never leave you nor forsake you”emphatic double negation, a covenant promise of God’s presence”I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee”Grounds contentment and courage in God’s unfailing covenant faithfulnessAku tidak sekali-kali akan meninggalkan engkau atau membiarkan engkau (reuse Pemeliharaan Allah doctrine family — Romans TM). Medium-High risk; ties to the assurance/providence doctrines already Critical/High in the baseline.
Ἰησοῦς Χριστὸς ἐχθὲς καὶ σήμερον ὁ αὐτός, καὶ εἰς τοὺς αἰῶναςIēsous Christos echthes kai sēmeron ho autos, kai eis tous aiōnas”Jesus Christ, the same yesterday and today and forever”absolute changelessness/eternality”Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever”A direct affirmation of Christ’s eternal, unchanging deityYesus Kristus, sama semalam, hari ini, dan selama-lamanya (reuse Yesus, Kristus — Romans TM exactly). Critical: a compact, memorable deity-of-Christ/eternality statement; must be rendered with full doctrinal weight, never softened to “Jesus’ teaching remains relevant.”
θυσιαστήριονthysiastērion”altar”the place of sacrificial offering”altar”Believers “have an altar” — Christ’s once-for-all sacrifice, of which the earthly priests may not partakeMazbah (established Alkitab term; NEW to this curriculum’s glossary). Low-Medium risk; reuse Korban conceptually.
ἔξω τῆς παρεμβολῆςexō tēs parembolēs”outside the camp”the place of ritual exclusion, where sin/purification offerings were burned”without the camp”Jesus suffered outside the city gate, identifying with the excluded and unclean, to sanctify his peopleDi luar perkhemahan (NEW). Medium risk; typological, requires OT background teaching (Lev 16).
ἁγιάσῃ διὰ τοῦ ἰδίου αἵματος τὸν λαόνhagiasē dia tou idiou haimatos ton laon”he might sanctify the people through his own blood”reuse ἁγιάζω, αἷμα”sanctify the people with his own blood”Summarizes the whole book’s atonement theology in a single clauseMenguduskan umat-Nya melalui darah-Nya sendiri (reuse Pengudusan, Darah). Critical; a fitting capstone statement for the whole curriculum’s core doctrines.
θυσία αἰνέσεωςthysia aineseōs”sacrifice of praise”a non-atoning, responsive offering of worship/thanksgiving”sacrifice of praise”Believers’ fitting response to Christ’s atoning sacrifice is continual praise, not further atoning sacrificeKorban puji-pujian (reuse Korban, Kesyukuran — Romans TM). Medium risk: must be clearly distinguished from the atoning Korban of Christ himself — this is a responsive, non-atoning offering of gratitude, a distinction worth flagging given how central and sensitive the primary Korban term already is.
ὁ ποιμὴν τῶν προβάτων ὁ μέγαςho poimēn tōn probatōn ho megas”the great shepherd of the sheep”pastoral care imagery”that great shepherd of the sheep”Christ’s ongoing pastoral care for his people, grounded in his resurrectionGembala besar domba-domba (NEW). Low-Medium risk; positive, resonant image.
αἷμα διαθήκης αἰωνίουhaima diathēkēs aiōniou”blood of the eternal/everlasting covenant”combines Darah, Perjanjian, and “eternal""blood of the everlasting covenant”A final summary of the whole book’s covenant theologyDarah perjanjian yang kekal (reuse Darah, Perjanjian). Critical; must be rendered consistently with Perjanjian Baru (8:8-13; 9:15) and αἰωνία λύτρωσις (9:12) as part of one unified covenant argument threading through the entire book.
