Translation Landscape

Existing Czech Bible translations

Bible kralická (1579-1593), produced by the Unity of the Brethren, is the historic literary-standard Czech Bible translation, comparable in linguistic and cultural stature to the King James Version in English or Luther’s Bible in German. The modern standard is the Český ekumenický překlad (Czech Ecumenical Translation, ČEP, 1979), produced jointly across Catholic and Protestant Czech churches and used broadly today. This Language Package draws its established vocabulary from both, favoring ČEP’s more contemporary register for readability while retaining Kralice-tradition terms (e.g. spasení) where they remain the standard glossary term despite their increasingly archaic feel to secular readers.

Where existing translations fall short for this curriculum

  • No existing translation addresses low biblical literacy directly: both Bible kralická and ČEP are translations of Scripture itself, written with at least some assumed reader familiarity with Christian concepts. A Bible study curriculum for a largely secular, non-religious readership needs explanatory scaffolding no existing translation provides, since translating the text accurately does not by itself teach an unfamiliar reader what the words mean.
  • No settled glossary distinguishing theological from secular senses for a general audience: several key terms (povolání, smlouva, vyvolení, milost) have widely used secular senses that are not flagged as competing readings in any existing Czech biblical resource intended for a general audience.
  • Register tension unresolved elsewhere: existing Czech Christian resources are generally written for an already-religious readership and do not solve the specific problem this curriculum faces — finding a register that is neither archaic-sounding nor coldly academic for a reader with no prior religious framework.

Readiness assessment

Czech is lexically stable — every core term already has an established, non-invented rendering from either Bible kralická or ČEP. The translation task here is building conceptual comprehension from a low baseline, not resolving doctrinal ambiguity or guarding against a rival religious framework, a genuinely different kind of translation labor than every other Language Package in this pipeline.
