Linguistic Gap Analysis

Linguistic Gap Analysis

Czech has settled, established vocabulary for every Romans concept, inherited from Bible kralická and the modern Czech Ecumenical Translation. The gap in this Language Package is not missing vocabulary but missing shared conceptual background for that vocabulary.

Terms requiring conceptual scaffolding rather than new vocabulary

  • Spasení (salvation): the word itself is correct and established, but for most readers it carries no live meaning at all; it must be introduced with a narrative explanation (from what humanity needs saving, to what state, accomplished by whom) rather than simply used as if self-explanatory.
  • Ospravedlnění (justification): exists as an ordinary Czech word for excusing an action; the specific forensic, before-God sense Paul intends requires active construction, since the everyday sense will otherwise dominate by default.
  • Přičtená spravedlnost (imputed righteousness): a compound phrase with literally no equivalent in ordinary Czech speech at all; must be built from the ground up and anchored to Romans 4’s Abraham narrative for concreteness.

Terms requiring defense against a dominant secular sense

  • Povolání (calling), smlouva (covenant), vyvolení (election), pán (lord): each has a dominant, unrelated secular meaning (job, contract, competitive selection, “Mister”) that must be actively overridden through context and explanation, since Czech, unlike some other languages in this pipeline, has no residual religious usage keeping the theological sense alive in parallel.

Gap-filling strategy

Because there is no vocabulary gap to fill and no rival doctrinal framework to correct against, this Language Package’s entire strategy is pedagogical: pairing each established term with enough plain-language explanation that a reader encountering the concept for the first time can actually follow Paul’s argument, not simply recognize familiar-looking words.
