Core Glossary
Core Glossary: 1 Thessalonians (Full Book)
This glossary lists every load-bearing theological term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, organized by doctrine category. Status indicates whether the term is reused exactly from the baseline translation_memory.json (carried over unchanged from Romans/Galatians/Ephesians/Philippians/Colossians) or newly introduced for 1 Thessalonians. All NEW terms below must be added to translation_memory.json at the start of Phase 2 processing per the Translation Memory Load and Enforcement Instructions in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md.
Citation convention: 1 Thessalonians = 1 தெசலோனிக்கேயர்
Doctrine 1: The Return of Christ (Parousia)
| English Term | Original | Tamil Rendering | Transliteration | Risk | Status | Key Passages | Rejected Alternatives | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coming / Parousia | παρουσία | வருகை | varugai | Critical | NEW | 2:19; 3:13; 4:15; 5:23 | அவதாரம் (avatar-descent — forbidden pipeline-wide); “இரண்டாம் வருகை” acceptable in teaching prose only | Structural collision with Vaishnava Kalki-avatar expectation (future, world-ending/renewing divine arrival). Must be taught as Christ’s single, personal, non-repeating return, not one avatar-arrival among a cyclical sequence. All 5 occurrences render identically. Human theologian review required for every occurrence. |
| Will descend | καταβήσεται | இறங்கி வருவார் | irangi varuvaar | High | NEW | 4:16 | அவதரித்தார் (forbidden — same verb banned for the Incarnation in the Philippians package) | Plain, visible, bodily descent language only; never repeatable-descent framing. |
| Heaven | οὐρανός | பரலோகம் | paralogam | Critical | REUSED (Philippians TM heaven) | 1:10; 4:16 | சொர்க்கம், வைகுண்டம், கைலாசம், மோட்சலோகம் | வைகுண்டம் prohibition especially salient here — Vishnu’s avatars descend from Vaikuntham; பரலோகம் carries no pantheon-abode association. |
| Archangel | ἀρχάγγελος | பிரதான தூதன் | pirathaana thoothan | Low-Medium | NEW | 4:16 | — | Herald of the King’s arrival, not an object of veneration; distinct from the Colossians-package worship_of_angels caution, which is not triggered here. |
| Trumpet of God | σάλπιγξ θεοῦ | கடவுளுடைய எக்காளம் | Kadavuludaiya ekkaalam | Medium | NEW | 4:16 | — | கடவுள், not தேவன், per the baseline God-word decision. |
| Meet the Lord | ἀπάντησις | கர்த்தரை எதிர்கொண்டு செல்லுதல் | Kartharai edhirkondu selluthal | High | NEW | 4:17 | — | Greco-Roman civic dignitary-reception protocol; surface this background to prevent an escapist “taken away forever” misreading. |
| With the Lord (always) | σὺν κυρίῳ | கர்த்தருடனேகூட (எப்பொழுதும்) | Kartharudanekooda (eppozhuthum) | High | NEW (σύν-compound pattern reused from Ephesians) | 4:17; 5:10 | — | கூட-compound convention inherited from Ephesians 2:5-6; connects to Philippians’ “depart and be with Christ.” |
| Day of Christ | ἡμέρα Χριστοῦ | கிறிஸ்துவின் நாள் | Kiristhuvin naal | Medium | REUSED (Philippians TM day_of_christ) | (cross-reference only; not in 1 Thess directly, but doctrinally unified with the Day of the Lord below) | — | Teach as the same eschatological horizon as “the Day of the Lord,” under a different NT phrase-tradition. |
| Wrath to come | ὀργὴ ἐρχομένη | வரப்போகிற கோபாக்கினை | varappogira kopaakkinai | High | REUSED (Ephesians TM wrath_of_god) | 1:10; 2:16; 5:9 | bare கோபம் | Judicial verdict of a holy God, never capricious deity-anger (Amman-appeasement pattern). |
Doctrine 2: Resurrection of Believers
| English Term | Original | Tamil Rendering | Transliteration | Risk | Status | Key Passages | Rejected Alternatives | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rose (Christ) / Will rise (believers) | ἀνέστη / ἀναστήσονται | உயிரோடு எழுந்தார் / உயிரோடு எழுவார்கள் | uyirodu ezhundhaar / uyirodu ezhuvaargal | Critical | REUSED (baseline TM resurrection) | 4:14, 16 | மறுபிறவி | Bodily, historical, once-for-all; never rebirth/reincarnation. |
| Fallen asleep (death euphemism) | κοιμάομαι | நித்திரையாதல் | nithiraiyaadhal | High | NEW | 4:13, 14, 15 | உறங்குகிற (reserved, per Ephesians TM, for forbidding the softening of “spiritually dead” — different referent, do not conflate rule) | Death-euphemism for believers specifically; must anticipate a singular embodied resurrection, not a rebirth cycle. Lexically distinct from καθεύδω (5:6-7,10) — see below. |
| Sleep (moral complacency) | καθεύδω | தூக்கம் / உறங்குதல் | thookkam / uranguthal | High | NEW | 5:6, 7, 10 | நித்திரையாதல் (reserved for the death-euphemism above) | Must use a different Tamil word-family from நித்திரையாதல் to preserve Paul’s own distinct Greek vocabulary. |
| The dead in Christ | νεκροὶ ἐν Χριστῷ | கிறிஸ்துவுக்குள் மரித்தோர் | Kiristhuvukkul marithor | High | NEW | 4:16 | — | The “in Christ” qualifier (கிறிஸ்துவுக்குள்) must never be dropped. |
| Will bring (with him) | ἄξει | கொண்டுவருவார் | konduvaruvaar | Medium-High | NEW | 4:14 | — | God escorts the departed-in-Christ WITH the returning Christ; connects to Philippians’ “depart and be with Christ.” |
| Caught up (rapture) | ἁρπαγησόμεθα | எடுத்துக்கொள்ளப்படுவோம் | eduthukkollappaduvom | Critical | NEW | 4:17 | — | Passive voice mandatory (God’s act, not human attainment). Guards against Siddhar kaya-siddhi (bodily-ascension-by-technique) assimilation. Human theologian review required. |
| First (sequence marker) | πρῶτον | முதலாவதாக | mudhalaavathaaga | Low (doctrinally load-bearing) | NEW | 4:16 | — | Establishes the dead-rise-before-living-are-caught-up sequence; the pastoral point of the whole passage depends on this word’s placement. |
| Believe (Jesus died and rose) | πιστεύομεν | விசுவாசிக்கிறோம் | vishvasikkiroam | High | REUSED (baseline TM faith, verb form) | 4:14 | பக்தி-style generalized confidence | Must retain the specific object: Jesus’ historical death and resurrection. |
Doctrine 3: Sanctification
| English Term | Original | Tamil Rendering | Transliteration | Risk | Status | Key Passages | Rejected Alternatives | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sanctification | ἁγιασμός | பரிசுத்தமாக்குதல் | parisuthamaakkuthal | High | REUSED (baseline TM sanctification) | 4:3, 4, 7 | — | Highest concentration of this word anywhere in the NT; direct topic-sentence of 4:1-8. |
| Holiness (state/quality) | ἁγιωσύνη | பரிசுத்தம் | parisutham | High | REUSED (baseline TM holy) | 3:13 | — | Distinct Greek root from ἁγιασμός but converges harmlessly on the same established Tamil word-family. |
| Will of God | θέλημα τοῦ θεοῦ | கடவுளுடைய சித்தம் | Kadavuludaiya chiththam | High | NEW compound (கடவுள் reused) | 4:3; 5:18 | — | Sanctification is explicitly identified AS God’s will, not merely compatible with it. |
| Sexual immorality | πορνεία | வேசித்தனம் | vesithanam | Medium | NEW | 4:3 | — | Broad moral category; do not narrow to one culturally specific offense. |
| Vessel (body/wife — disputed) | σκεῦος | பாத்திரம் | paathiram | Medium | NEW | 4:4 | — | Genuinely ambiguous in Greek; record both readings (body/wife); flag for native-speaker/theologian review; must not imply body-denial. |
| Lustful passion | ἐπιθυμία / πάθος ἐπιθυμίας | இச்சை / மோகம் | ichchai / moham | Medium | NEW | 4:5 | — | Bounded, illicit sexual passion here; must not be conflated with the Philippians-package caution against treating ordinary desire as something to be extinguished. |
| Impurity | ἀκαθαρσία | அசுத்தம் | asuththam | Medium | NEW | 4:7 | — | Moral-ethical impurity, distinct from the Colossians-package ritual purity-code critique (தீட்டு); do not conflate. |
| Brotherly love | φιλαδελφία | சகோதர அன்பு | sakodhara anbu | Low | NEW compound (அன்பு reused) | 4:9 | — | God-taught (θεοδίδακτοι) affection among believers. |
| Established/strengthened (hearts) | στηρίζω | உறுதிப்படுத்துதல் | uruthippaduthuthal | Medium | NEW | 3:2, 13 | — | God’s/apostles’ strengthening meeting genuine faith; not merit-earning perseverance. |
| Blameless | ἄμεμπτος | குற்றமற்ற | kutramatra | Medium | REUSED (Ephesians/Philippians TM blameless_children_crooked_generation) | 3:13; 5:23 | — | — |
| Sanctify you wholly | ἁγιάσαι… ὁλοτελεῖς | முழுவதுமாக பரிசுத்தமாக்குதல் | muzhuvathumaaga parisuthamaakkuthal | Critical | NEW (verb form of reused root) | 5:23 | பரிபூரணம் (must NOT be substituted here — reserved for the distinct Vedantic-adjacent fullness doctrine already governed in Colossians/Ephesians) | Totality of the person, God’s own act; guard against Vedantic pūrṇam (merger) misreading. Human theologian review required. |
| Whole spirit, soul, and body | ὁλόκληρον τὸ πνεῦμα καὶ ἡ ψυχὴ καὶ τὸ σῶμα | முழு ஆவியும் ஆத்துமாவும் சரீரமும் | muzhu aaviyum aaththumaavum sareeramum | Critical | NEW | 5:23 | — | ஆத்துமா (soul) risks phonetic/etymological drift toward ஆத்மா (Vedantic impersonal Self); must be taught as the personal soul of a distinct individual. சரீரம் (formal), never உடல், per body_of_christ convention. Human theologian review required. |
| Kept blameless | ἀμέμπτως τηρηθείη | குற்றமற்றதாகக் காக்கப்படுதல் | kutramatradhaaga kaakkappaduthal | Medium | REUSED root | 5:23 | — | Passive — God’s preserving work, not self-maintained achievement. |
| Faithful is he who calls | πιστὸς ὁ καλῶν | அழைக்கிறவர் உண்மையுள்ளவர் | azhaikkiravar unmaiyullavar | High | REUSED (baseline TM called/calling) | 5:24 | — | Grounds assurance; completing agent is God, never the believer’s accumulating effort. |
Doctrine 4: Hope in Grief
| English Term | Original | Tamil Rendering | Transliteration | Risk | Status | Key Passages | Rejected Alternatives | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hope | ἐλπίς | நம்பிக்கை | nambikkai | High | REUSED (Ephesians TM hope) | 4:13 | ஆசை | Must carry promise-grounded certainty, sharpened by direct contrast with “those who have no hope.” |
| Grieve | λυπέω | துக்கப்படுதல் | thukkappaduthal | Medium | NEW | 4:13 | — | Grief itself is not forbidden — only the qualifying phrase “as others who have no hope” is doctrinal; the qualifier must always travel with the verb. |
| Uninformed | ἀγνοέω | அறியாதிருக்க | ariyaathirukka | Low | NEW | 4:13 | — | Plain cognitive verb; Paul is closing a specific catechetical gap. |
| Encourage one another (with these words) | παρακαλεῖτε ἀλλήλους | ஒருவரையொருவர் உற்சாகப்படுத்துங்கள் | oruvaraiyoruvar utchagappaduthungal | Low (doctrinally central) | REUSED (baseline TM exhort, encouragement sense) | 4:18; 5:11 | வேண்டுகோள் sense (reserved for entreaty contexts) | The entire passage’s purpose statement; comfort must stay tethered to the specific doctrinal content of 4:14-17, not generic bereavement sentiment. |
| These words | λόγοις τούτοις | இந்த வார்த்தைகளினாலே | indha vaarthaigalinaale | Low | NEW | 4:18 | — | Forbids detaching pastoral comfort from its grounding doctrinal content. |
| Word of the Lord | λόγος κυρίου | கர்த்தருடைய வார்த்தை | Kartharudaiya vaarthai | High | NEW compound (கர்த்தர் reused) | 4:15 | — | Specific, authoritative divine disclosure, not a generic prophetic impression. |
| Peace of God | εἰρήνη τοῦ θεοῦ | கடவுளுடைய சமாதானம் | Kadavuludaiya samadhanam | High | REUSED (Philippians TM peace_of_god) | 5:23 (God of peace) | சாந்தி | Relational, God-given; not meditative/ritual tranquility. |
| Do not quench the Spirit | τὸ πνεῦμα μὴ σβέννυτε | ஆவியானவரை அவித்துவிடாதிருங்கள் | Aaviyaanavarai avithuviduthirungal | High | NEW | 5:19 | — | Companion personhood-of-the-Spirit text to Ephesians 4:30; must not reduce the Spirit to an impersonal, extinguishable force. |
| Fainthearted / weak | ὀλιγόψυχοι / ἀσθενοῦντες | மனந்தளர்ந்தவர்கள் / பலவீனர்கள் | mananthalarnthavargal / palaveenargal | Low | NEW | 5:14 | — | Pastoral triage categories, relevant to grief-comfort ministry. |
Doctrine 5: The Day of the Lord
| English Term | Original | Tamil Rendering | Transliteration | Risk | Status | Key Passages | Rejected Alternatives | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Day of the Lord | ἡμέρα κυρίου | கர்த்தருடைய நாள் | Kartharudaiya naal | Critical | NEW | 5:2 | — | OT/NT technical eschatological term; must not multiply as a “second coming” separate from the Parousia — same event, different vocabulary tradition. Human theologian review required. |
| Times and seasons | χρόνοι καὶ καιροί | காலங்களும் சமயங்களும் | kaalangalum samayangalum | High | NEW | 5:1 | — | Direct tension with panchangam/astrological time-calculation culture; the Day’s certainty paired with its incalculability is the opposite combination an almanac-based worldview offers. |
| Thief in the night | κλέπτης ἐν νυκτί | இராக்காலத் திருடன் போல | iraakkaalath thirudan pola | Medium | NEW | 5:2 | — | Unpredictability applies to unbelievers’ unpreparedness, not to believers (contrast with v.4). |
| Peace and safety (false security) | εἰρήνη καὶ ἀσφάλεια | சமாதானமும் சுகமும் | samadhanamum sugamum | Low-Medium | NEW compound (சமாதானம் reused) | 5:3 | — | Possibly echoes Roman imperial propaganda (pax Romana); false complacent confidence, shattered suddenly. |
| Sons of light / of day | υἱοὶ φωτός / ἡμέρας | ஒளியின் பிள்ளைகள் / பகலின் பிள்ளைகள் | oliyin pillaigal / pagalin pillaigal | Medium | REUSED (Ephesians TM light_versus_darkness) | 5:5 | — | Ontological identity language, not merely environment. |
| Sons of night / darkness | υἱοὶ νυκτὸς / σκότους | இரவின் பிள்ளைகள் / இருளின் பிள்ளைகள் | iravin pillaigal / irulin pillaigal | Medium | REUSED (same term-family) | 5:5 | — | Negative counterpart; believers’ identity excludes this category. |
| Watch and be sober | γρηγορέω / νήφω | விழித்திருத்தல் / தெளிந்திருத்தல் | vizhithirukkal / thelinthirukkal | Medium | NEW | 5:6, 8 | — | Positive ethical posture for those who know the Day is coming but not its hour. |
| Breastplate of faith and love / Helmet, hope of salvation | θώραξ πίστεως καὶ ἀγάπης / περικεφαλαία ἐλπὶς σωτηρίας | விசுவாசம் அன்பு என்னும் மார்க்கவசம் / இரட்சிப்பின் நம்பிக்கை என்னும் தலைக்கவசம் | — | Medium/High | NEW compound (armor pattern reused from Ephesians; விசுவாசம், அன்பு, நம்பிக்கை, இரட்சிப்பு all reused) | 5:8 | — | Gospel realities appropriated by faith; never a protective amulet-object (தாயத்து). |
| Not destined for wrath, but for salvation | οὐκ… εἰς ὀργὴν ἀλλὰ εἰς περιποίησιν σωτηρίας | கோபாக்கினைக்கு அல்ல, இரட்சிப்புக்கே நியமிக்கப்பட்டோம் | — | High | NEW compound (கோபாக்கினை, இரட்சிப்பு reused) | 5:9 | — | Believers’ exemption from Day-of-the-Lord wrath; must not read as arbitrary/fatalistic predetermination. |
| Live together with him | ζήσωμεν σὺν αὐτῷ | அவருடனேகூட வாழ | avarudanekooda vaazha | High | REUSED (σύν-compound pattern) | 5:10 | — | Closing σύν-with-Christ statement, echoing 4:17. |
| God of peace | θεὸς τῆς εἰρήνης | சமாதானத்தின் கடவுள் | Samadhanathin Kadavul | High | REUSED (Philippians TM peace_of_god, கடவுள் per God-word decision) | 5:23 | தேவன் | — |

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Satan | Σατανᾶς | சாத்தான் | Saathaan | Medium | NEW | 2:18 | Same referent as the already-fixed பிசாசு (Ephesians TM devil); teach as two names for one defeated personal adversary, never two separate spirits, and never assimilated into the Tamil folk taxonomy of afflicting spirits (பேய், முனி, மோகினி). |
| Tempter | ὁ πειράζων | சோதிக்கிறவன் | sodhikkiravan | Medium | NEW | 3:5 | Title for the same adversary named சாத்தான்/பிசாசு. |

Critical Risk Terms
God
Approved rendering: கடவுள்
Transliteration: kadavul
Doctrine: Deity of Christ / God-word decision
Rejected alternatives: தேவன், பரமேஸ்வரன், பகவான்
Original: θεός
Category: God
Inherited exactly from the baseline Language Package (Romans God-word decision). Used throughout 1 Thessalonians, contrasted directly with idols at 1:9. Never தேவன் even inside fixed compounds retained for other reasons (e.g. son_of_god, kingdom_of_god below).
Jesus
Approved rendering: இயேசு
Transliteration: yesu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
Inherited exactly from the baseline package. Used throughout; grounds the resurrection-analogy of 4:14.
Christ
Approved rendering: கிறிஸ்து
Transliteration: kiristhu
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Original: Χριστός
Category: Christology
Inherited exactly from the baseline package. Used throughout, including the ‘dead in Christ’ (கிறிஸ்துவுக்குள் மரித்தோர்) compound at 4:16.
Lord
Approved rendering: கர்த்தர்
Transliteration: karthar
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: எஜமான்
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
Inherited exactly from the baseline package. Central to 4:15-17 (‘the Lord himself,’ ‘word of the Lord,’ ‘meet the Lord’) and 5:2, 9, 23 (‘Day of the Lord,’ ‘God of peace’). Every occurrence must convey exclusive, supreme, personal Lordship, never a household master.
Son Of God
Approved rendering: தேவனுடைய குமாரன்
Transliteration: Devanudaiya Kumaran
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: தெய்வப்புத்திரன்
Original: υἱὸς θεοῦ
Category: Christology
Inherited exactly from the baseline package as a fixed proper-title compound (retains தேவன் deliberately despite the general கடவுள் convention). Used at 1:10 (‘to wait for his Son from heaven’), the letter’s first Parousia reference.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: பரிசுத்த ஆவியானவர்
Transliteration: Parisutha Aaviyanavar
Doctrine: Personhood of the Holy Spirit
Rejected alternatives: பிரம்மம், பரமாத்மா
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: God
Inherited exactly from the baseline package. Used at 1:5-6 (source of gospel-power and joy), 4:8, and as the subject of the new command ‘do not quench the Spirit’ (5:19) — see do_not_quench_the_spirit below.
Father
Approved rendering: பிதா
Transliteration: pitha
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Inherited exactly from the baseline package. Used in the letter’s opening (1:1, 3) and closing (3:11, 13) formulas.
Salvation
Approved rendering: இரட்சிப்பு
Transliteration: iratchippu
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: மோட்சம், முக்தி
Original: σωτηρία
Category: Salvation
Inherited exactly from the baseline package. Used at 5:8 (helmet, ‘the hope of salvation’) and 5:9 (believers’ destined outcome, contrasted with wrath). NEVER மோட்சம் or முக்தி.
Resurrection
Approved rendering: உயிர்த்தெழுதல்
Transliteration: uyirthezhuthal
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ / Resurrection of Believers
Rejected alternatives: மறுபிறவி
Original: ἀνάστασις / ἀνέστη / ἀναστήσονται
Category: Eschatology
Inherited exactly from the baseline package. Used at 4:14 (Christ’s own historical resurrection, உயிரோடு எழுந்தார்) and 4:16 (believers’ future resurrection, உயிரோடு எழுவார்கள்), joined by explicit analogy (‘since we believe… even so’). NEVER மறுபிறவி.
Heaven
Approved rendering: பரலோகம்
Transliteration: paralogam
Doctrine: Citizenship in Heaven / The Return of Christ
Rejected alternatives: சொர்க்கம், வைகுண்டம், கைலாசம், மோட்சலோகம்
Original: οὐρανός
Category: Eschatology
Inherited exactly from the baseline package (Philippians). Used at 1:10 (‘wait for his Son from heaven’) and 4:16 (‘the Lord himself will descend from heaven’). The வைகுண்டம் prohibition is especially salient in this book: Vaishnava avatars are said to descend from Vaikuntham, reinforcing why பரலோகம் — carrying no pantheon-abode association — is required.
Parousia
Approved rendering: வருகை
Transliteration: varugai
Doctrine: The Return of Christ
Rejected alternatives: அவதாரம், அவதரித்தார்
Original: παρουσία
Category: Eschatology
NEW term for this book. The letter’s central doctrinal anchor, occurring at 2:19; 3:13; 4:15; 5:23 (cf. 5:2’s day_of_the_lord vocabulary tradition for the same event). Structural collision with Tamil Vaishnavism’s Kalki doctrine — Vishnu’s tenth, still-future avatar expected to end the present Kali Yuga. Must be taught, at every occurrence, as Christ’s single, personal, non-repeating return completing what he already began (one incarnation, death, resurrection), never one arrival within a fixed cyclical sequence of divine descents. Render identically at all occurrences. ‘இரண்டாம் வருகை’ (‘second coming’) acceptable only in explanatory teaching prose, never as the Scripture-text rendering. Human theologian review required for every occurrence.
Caught Up
Approved rendering: எடுத்துக்கொள்ளப்படுவோம்
Transliteration: eduthukkollappaduvom
Doctrine: Resurrection of Believers
Original: ἁρπαγησόμεθα
Category: Eschatology
NEW coined compound for this book. Used at 4:17 (ἁρπαγησόμεθα). Passive voice is MANDATORY — God’s own sovereign act done TO believers, never a spiritual technique or attainment. Guards against assimilation to the Tamil Siddhar tradition’s claims of yogic/alchemical bodily transformation or translation (kaya siddhi). The single highest-ranked risk term in this book’s linguistic gap analysis. Human theologian review required for every occurrence.
Sanctify Wholly
Approved rendering: முழுவதுமாக பரிசுத்தமாக்குதல்
Transliteration: muzhuvathumaaga parisuthamaakkuthal
Doctrine: Complete Sanctification at Christ’s Coming
Rejected alternatives: பரிபூரணம் (reserved for the distinct Colossians/Ephesians fullness doctrine — never substitute here)
Original: ἁγιάσαι ὑμᾶς ὁλοτελεῖς
Category: Sanctification
NEW coined verb compound for this book. Used at 5:23 (ἁγιάσαι ὑμᾶς ὁλοτελεῖς). Must preserve BOTH the totality claim and the personal, relational nature of the act (God himself sanctifies). Must NOT drift toward Vedantic pūrṇam (ontological merger with an undifferentiated divine fullness) — the wholeness in view is total consecration of a distinct person’s every part, not erasure of the person-God boundary. This lexical separation from பரிபூரணம் is a deliberate within-pipeline fencing decision. Human theologian review required.
Whole Spirit Soul And Body
Approved rendering: முழு ஆவியும் ஆத்துமாவும் சரீரமும்
Transliteration: muzhu aaviyum aaththumaavum sareeramum
Doctrine: Complete Sanctification at Christ’s Coming
Original: ὁλόκληρον τὸ πνεῦμα καὶ ἡ ψυχὴ καὶ τὸ σῶμα
Category: Sanctification
NEW coined compound for this book, assembled from already-fixed baseline components (ஆவி, ஆத்துமா, சரீரம்) plus the intensifier முழு. Used at 5:23 (ὁλόκληρον τὸ πνεῦμα καὶ ἡ ψυχὴ καὶ τὸ σῶμα). ஆத்துமா (soul) is phonetically/etymologically close to ஆத்மா, the Vedantic term for an eternal, impersonal Self ultimately identical with Brahman — teaching material must make explicit this ψυχή is the ordinary personal soul of one specific individual, not a shared metaphysical substrate. சரீரம் (formal), never உடல், per the body_of_christ register convention. Human theologian review required for every occurrence.
Idols
Approved rendering: விக்கிரகங்கள்
Transliteration: vikkiragangal
Doctrine: Conversion from Idolatry
Original: εἴδωλα
Category: Sin
NEW term for this book — the first literal-cultic-image confrontation in this entire pipeline. Used at 1:9. Tamil Nadu is among the most temple-dense regions in the world, with image-veneration (விக்கிரக ஆராதனை) a daily, family-normative practice for many believers’ relatives and, for first-generation believers, their own personal history. Must be rendered with full directness — a decisive, exclusive turning FROM idols TO the living and true God — never softened into ‘found a higher truth.’ The text itself must not name any specific living Tamil deity or temple; application belongs to teaching material. Human theologian review required.
Living And True God
Approved rendering: ஜீவனும் சத்தியமுமான கடவுள்
Transliteration: jeevanum sathiyamumaana Kadavul
Doctrine: Conversion from Idolatry
Original: θεῷ ζῶντι καὶ ἀληθινῷ
Category: God
NEW compound for this book, using கடவுள் per the God-word decision. Used at 1:9. The positive counter-term to idols — aliveness and trueness are the exact opposite qualities of an idol’s lifelessness and falseness.
Wait For His Son From Heaven
Approved rendering: பரலோகத்திலிருந்து அவருடைய குமாரனுக்காக காத்திருக்க
Transliteration: paralogathilirunthu avarudaiya kumaranukkaaga kaathirukka
Doctrine: The Return of Christ / Sonship of Christ
Original: ἀναμένειν τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ ἐκ τῶν οὐρανῶν
Category: Christology
NEW compound for this book. Used at 1:10. ‘His Son’ reuses தேவனுடைய குமாரன் exactly as fixed in the baseline (son_of_god above). Ties election, conversion-from-idols, and the Return of Christ together in a single verse.
Day Of The Lord
Approved rendering: கர்த்தருடைய நாள்
Transliteration: Kartharudaiya naal
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Original: ἡμέρα κυρίου
Category: Eschatology
NEW compound for this book, reusing the fixed கர்த்தர். Used at 5:2. The OT/NT technical eschatological term for God’s decisive day of judgment and salvation, identified here with Christ’s return. Must be taught as the SAME future event already named by parousia (வருகை) under a different (Hebrew prophetic-judgment) vocabulary tradition — not a second, separate coming. Human theologian review required for every occurrence.
High Risk Terms
Gospel
Approved rendering: சுவிசேஷம்
Transliteration: suvisesham
Doctrine: Gospel
Rejected alternatives: நல்ல செய்தி
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Salvation
Inherited exactly from the baseline package. Used at 1:5; 2:2, 4, 8-9; 3:2. Must never read as one persuasive message among many; its pairing with வல்லமை (power) at 1:5 underlines divine, not merely rhetorical, authority.
Grace
Approved rendering: கிருபை
Transliteration: kirupai
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: புண்ணியம், ஊழ்வினை பலன்
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Inherited exactly from the baseline package. Frames the letter’s opening (1:1) and closing (5:28) benedictions.
Faith
Approved rendering: விசுவாசம்
Transliteration: vishvasam
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: பக்தி
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
Inherited exactly from the baseline package. Used at 1:3, 8; 3:2, 5-7, 10; 4:14 (verb form விசுவாசிக்கிறோம், ‘we believe Jesus died and rose’); 5:8 (breastplate). Must retain the specific object (Jesus’ historical death and resurrection at 4:14), never drifting toward பக்தி-style generalized devotional confidence.
Election
Approved rendering: தெரிந்துகொள்ளுதல்
Transliteration: therinthu-kolluthal
Doctrine: Election and Divine Calling
Rejected alternatives: தலைவிதி, ஊழ்வினை
Original: ἐκλογή
Category: Salvation
Inherited exactly from the baseline package. Used at 1:4 (‘knowing your election’), the ground of Paul’s confidence from the letter’s first paragraph. Never தலைவிதி/ஊழ்வினை.
Power Of God
Approved rendering: தேவனுடைய வல்லமை
Transliteration: Devanudaiya Vallamai
Doctrine: Power of God for Salvation
Rejected alternatives: சக்தி
Original: δύναμις
Category: God
Inherited exactly from the baseline package (compound retains தேவனுடைய as fixed baseline usage). Used at 1:5 (gospel came ‘in power’). NEVER சக்தி, given Tamil Nadu’s village Amman goddess tradition.
Called Calling
Approved rendering: அழைக்கப்பட்ட / அழைப்பு
Transliteration: azhaikkappatta / azhaippu
Doctrine: Divine Calling / Effectual Calling
Rejected alternatives: அழைப்பு பெற்ற
Original: κλητός / κλῆσις
Category: Salvation
Inherited exactly from the baseline package. Used at 2:12 (called into God’s kingdom and glory), 4:7 (called to holiness), 5:24 (‘faithful is he who calls you’). Never தலைவிதி/ஊழ்வினை; the completing agent at 5:24 must stay God, never the believer’s accumulating effort.
Holy
Approved rendering: பரிசுத்தம்
Transliteration: parisutham
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: சுத்தம்
Original: ἅγιος / ἁγιωσύνη
Category: Sanctification
Inherited exactly from the baseline package. Used at 3:13 (ἁγιωσύνη, ‘establish your hearts blameless in holiness’) and 4:4, 7. Both Greek nouns (ἁγιωσύνη, ἁγιασμός) converge harmlessly on this single established Tamil word-family.
Saints
Approved rendering: பரிசுத்தவான்கள்
Transliteration: parisuthavankal
Doctrine: Sainthood
Rejected alternatives: சாமியார், சித்தர்
Inherited exactly from the baseline package. Used at 3:13 as part of the new compound ‘all his saints’ (see all_his_saints below), the letter’s first indication that the Parousia is corporate. NEVER சாமியார்/சித்தர்.
Sanctification
Approved rendering: பரிசுத்தமாக்குதல்
Transliteration: parisuthamaakkuthal
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: ἁγιασμός
Category: Sanctification
Inherited exactly from the baseline package. Highest concentration of this word anywhere in the NT occurs in this letter: 4:3, 4, 7 (three uses in five verses), directly identified as ‘the will of God’ (4:3, see will_of_god below). Never merit-earned religious achievement (புண்ணியம்) or ritual/ascetic self-purification.
Glory
Approved rendering: மகிமை
Transliteration: magimai
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Original: δόξα
Category: God
Inherited exactly from the baseline package. Used at 2:12, 20.
Gentiles
Approved rendering: புறஜாதியார்
Transliteration: purajathiyar
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles / Sexual Purity contrast
Original: ἔθνη
Category: Church
Inherited exactly from the baseline package. Used at 2:16 and 4:5 (contrast between believers’ sanctified conduct and Gentile passion). The inherited caution that ஜாதி sits near caste vocabulary applies: 4:5’s doctrinal point is moral contrast, not caste classification.
Devil
Approved rendering: பிசாசு
Transliteration: pisaasu
Doctrine: Spiritual Warfare
Rejected alternatives: பேய்
Original: διάβολος
Category: Spiritual Warfare
Inherited exactly from the baseline package (Ephesians). Conceptual background for this letter’s newly introduced name சாத்தான் (2:18) and title சோதிக்கிறவன் (3:5) — see satan and tempter below. Never assimilated into the Tamil folk taxonomy of afflicting spirits (பேய், முனி, மோகினி).
Wrath Of God
Approved rendering: கோபாக்கினை
Transliteration: kopaakkinai
Doctrine: Wrath of God / The Day of the Lord
Rejected alternatives: கோபம்
Inherited exactly from the baseline package (Ephesians). Used at 1:10 (wrath to come), 2:16, and 5:9 (‘not destined for wrath but for salvation’). The judicial compound is load-bearing; never bare கோபம், which risks the Amman-appeasement pattern of capricious deity-anger.
Hope
Approved rendering: நம்பிக்கை
Transliteration: nambikkai
Doctrine: Hope of Calling / Hope in Grief
Rejected alternatives: ஆசை
Original: ἐλπίς
Category: Faith
Inherited exactly from the baseline package (Ephesians). Used at 4:13 (contrasted directly with unbelieving despair) and 5:8 (helmet). Must carry promise-grounded certainty, not ordinary Tamil நம்பிக்கை’s wishful range.
Peace Of God
Approved rendering: கடவுளுடைய சமாதானம்
Transliteration: kadavuludaiya samadhanam
Doctrine: The Peace of God
Rejected alternatives: சாந்தி
Original: εἰρήνη τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: God
Inherited exactly from the baseline package (Philippians), adjusted to use கடவுள் per the God-word decision. Underlies 5:23’s ‘God of peace’ title — see god_of_peace below.
Armor Of God
Approved rendering: கடவுளுடைய சர்வாயுதவர்க்கம்
Transliteration: Kadavuludaiya sarvaayudha varkkam
Doctrine: Spiritual Warfare / Watchfulness
Inherited exactly from the baseline package (Ephesians). 1 Thessalonians 5:8 reuses the same armor-of-God image with a partial component set (breastplate of faith and love; helmet, the hope of salvation) — see armor_faith_love_hope_salvation below. Must read as gospel realities appropriated by faith, never a protective amulet-object (தாயத்து).
Ruler Of The Air
Approved rendering: ஆகாயத்து அதிகாரப் பிரபு
Transliteration: aakaayaththu athikaara pirabhu
Doctrine: Spiritual Warfare (cross-reference)
Inherited exactly from the baseline package (Ephesians 2:2). Not directly quoted in 1 Thessalonians but relevant teaching cross-reference: 4:17’s meeting-place ‘in the air’ (ஆகாயத்தில்) is the very domain named as this defeated ruler’s former sphere — a deliberate theological echo worth surfacing in teaching material, not the translated text.
Depart And Be With Christ
Approved rendering: அனாலிட்டு கிறிஸ்துவுடன் இருக்க
Transliteration: analittu Kiristhuvudan irukka
Doctrine: Hope in Grief (cross-reference)
Inherited exactly from the baseline package (Philippians 1:23). Governing cross-reference for 4:17’s ‘always with the Lord’ (see with_the_lord_always below) and 5:10’s ‘live together with him’: whether by death or by the Parousia, the believer’s hope is always personal presence with Christ, never absorption into an impersonal state.
God Completes The Good Work
Approved rendering: நற்செயலைத் தொடங்கியவர் அதை நிறைவேற்றுவார்
Transliteration: narseyalai thodangiyavar athai niraiverruvaar
Doctrine: Assurance (cross-reference for 5:24)
Inherited exactly from the baseline package (Philippians 1:6). Governing cross-reference for 5:24 (‘faithful is he who calls you’) — the completing agent is God, not the believer’s accumulating effort, against Hindu/Jain multi-lifetime-progress assumptions.
Will Descend
Approved rendering: இறங்கி வருவார்
Transliteration: irangi varuvaar
Doctrine: The Return of Christ
Rejected alternatives: அவதரித்தார்
Original: καταβήσεται
Category: Eschatology
NEW term for this book. Used at 4:16 (καταβήσεται). Plain, visible, bodily descent language only; NEVER அவதரித்தார், the verb already forbidden pipeline-wide for the Incarnation (Philippians kenosis package) — the same avatar-descent risk applies to Christ’s return.
Meet The Lord
Approved rendering: கர்த்தரை எதிர்கொண்டு செல்லுதல்
Transliteration: Kartharai edhirkondu selluthal
Doctrine: The Return of Christ
Original: ἀπάντησις
Category: Eschatology
NEW term for this book. Used at 4:17 (ἀπάντησις). Renders the technical Hellenistic civic term for citizens formally going out to greet and escort in an arriving king. Teaching material must surface this civic-escort background explicitly, guarding against a purely ‘taken away into the sky forever’ reading that would suggest an escapist, world-abandoning eschatology foreign to this pipeline’s anti-asceticism stance.
With The Lord Always
Approved rendering: கர்த்தருடனேகூட (எப்பொழுதும்)
Transliteration: Kartharudanekooda (eppozhuthum)
Doctrine: The Return of Christ / Hope in Grief
Original: σὺν κυρίῳ / σὺν αὐτῷ
Category: Eschatology
NEW compound for this book, reusing the established Ephesians σύν-compound (கூட) convention. Used at 4:17 and 5:10 (live_together_with_him). The கூட element must remain visible; connects directly to depart_and_be_with_christ above — the hope is always personal presence with Christ, never absorption into an impersonal state.
Fallen Asleep
Approved rendering: நித்திரையாதல்
Transliteration: nithiraiyaadhal
Doctrine: Resurrection of Believers
Original: κοιμάομαι (κοιμωμένων, κοιμηθέντας)
Category: Eschatology
NEW term for this book. Used at 4:13, 14, 15 (κοιμάομαι). Death-euphemism for believers specifically, anticipating a single, embodied resurrection, not an indefinite rebirth cycle. Distinguish sharply from the Ephesians rule forbidding softening ‘spiritually dead’ into sleep (different referent). Must stay lexically distinct from sleep_moral_complacency below, preserving Paul’s own deliberate wordplay across chapters 4 and 5.
Sleep Moral Complacency
Approved rendering: தூக்கம் / உறங்குதல்
Transliteration: thookkam / uranguthal
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord / Watchfulness
Original: καθεύδω
Category: Eschatology
NEW term for this book. Used at 5:6, 7, 10 (καθεύδω). Ordinary literal sleep used metaphorically for spiritual drowsiness/unreadiness. Must use a Tamil word-family LEXICALLY DISTINCT from fallen_asleep above; conflating the two would erase Paul’s own careful distinction between two different Greek verbs used for two entirely different purposes.
Dead In Christ
Approved rendering: கிறிஸ்துவுக்குள் மரித்தோர்
Transliteration: Kiristhuvukkul marithor
Doctrine: Resurrection of Believers
Original: νεκροὶ ἐν Χριστῷ
Category: Eschatology
NEW compound for this book. Used at 4:16. The ‘in Christ’ qualifier (கிறிஸ்துவுக்குள்) must never be dropped — it is the entire ground of the promise that these are not merely ‘the dead’ in an impersonal, universal sense.
Word Of The Lord
Approved rendering: கர்த்தருடைய வார்த்தை
Transliteration: Kartharudaiya vaarthai
Doctrine: The Return of Christ (apostolic authority)
Original: λόγος κυρίου
Category: Church
NEW compound for this book, reusing the fixed கர்த்தர். Used at 4:15 (λόγος κυρίου). Must read as a specific, authoritative divine disclosure — parallel to the apostolic-revelation category fixed in the Galatians package — never a generic prophetic impression.
Will Of God
Approved rendering: கடவுளுடைய சித்தம்
Transliteration: Kadavuludaiya chiththam
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: θέλημα τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Sanctification
NEW compound for this book, using கடவுள் per the God-word decision. Used at 4:3 (sanctification directly identified AS God’s will) and 5:18. The connective structure must keep sanctification explicitly identified as God’s will, not merely compatible with it.
Armor Faith Love Hope Salvation
Approved rendering: விசுவாசம் அன்பு என்னும் மார்க்கவசம் / இரட்சிப்பின் நம்பிக்கை என்னும் தலைக்கவசம்
Transliteration: vishvasam anbu ennum markkavasam / iratchippin nambikkai ennum thalaikkavasam
Doctrine: Watchfulness and Identity as Sons of Light
Original: θώραξ πίστεως καὶ ἀγάπης / περικεφαλαία ἐλπὶς σωτηρίας
Category: Spiritual Warfare
NEW compound for this book, reusing the established Ephesians armor_of_god pattern and its component terms (விசுவாசம், அன்பு, நம்பிக்கை, இரட்சிப்பு) exactly. Used at 5:8. Must read as gospel realities appropriated by faith, never a protective amulet-object (தாயத்து).
Do Not Quench The Spirit
Approved rendering: ஆவியானவரை அவித்துவிடாதிருங்கள்
Transliteration: Aaviyaanavarai avithuviduthirungal
Doctrine: Personhood of the Holy Spirit
Original: τὸ πνεῦμα μὴ σβέννυτε
Category: God
NEW term for this book. Used at 5:19 (τὸ πνεῦμα μὴ σβέννυτε). The fire-extinguishing metaphor must not reduce the Holy Spirit to an impersonal energy or life-force that can simply be doused — a live risk given the pipeline-wide caution against சக்தி-family vocabulary. Companion personhood-of-the-Spirit text to Ephesians 4:30 (‘do not grieve the Spirit’); teach the two together.
All His Saints
Approved rendering: அவருடைய பரிசுத்தவான்கள் அனைவரோடும்
Transliteration: avarudaiya parisuthavankal anaivarodum
Doctrine: The Return of Christ (corporate dimension)
Original: πάντων τῶν ἁγίων αὐτοῦ
Category: Church
NEW compound for this book, reusing பரிசுத்தவான்கள் exactly. Used at 3:13. First indication in the letter that the Parousia is corporate: Christ returns WITH his saints already gathered, echoing 4:14’s ‘God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep.‘
Not Destined For Wrath
Approved rendering: கடவுள் நம்மைக் கோபாக்கினைக்கு அல்ல, இரட்சிப்பைப் பெறுவதற்கே நியமித்திருக்கிறார்
Transliteration: Kadavul nammai kopaakkinaikku alla, iratchippai peruvathirkke niyamithirukkiraar
Doctrine: Assurance of Deliverance from Wrath
Original: οὐκ ἔθετο ἡμᾶς… εἰς ὀργὴν ἀλλὰ εἰς περιποίησιν σωτηρίας
Category: Salvation
NEW compound for this book, reusing கோபாக்கினை and இரட்சிப்பு exactly. Used at 5:9. Must NOT be rendered so as to suggest arbitrary or fatalistic predetermination; per the inherited Ephesians predestination caution, the subject must stay personal (கடவுள்), never தலைவிதி/ஊழ் fatalism vocabulary.
Live Together With Him
Approved rendering: அவருடனேகூட வாழ
Transliteration: avarudanekooda vaazha
Doctrine: The Return of Christ / Assurance of Deliverance from Wrath
Original: ζήσωμεν σὺν αὐτῷ
Category: Salvation
NEW term for this book, reusing the σύν-compound (கூட) pattern. Used at 5:10 (ζήσωμεν σὺν αὐτῷ). Closing statement echoing 4:17’s with_the_lord_always; the கூட element must remain visible.
God Of Peace
Approved rendering: சமாதானத்தின் கடவுள்
Transliteration: Samadhanathin Kadavul
Doctrine: Complete Sanctification at Christ’s Coming
Rejected alternatives: தேவன் (never in this compound)
Original: θεὸς τῆς εἰρήνης
Category: God
NEW compound for this book, using கடவுள் per the God-word decision. Used at 5:23. This doctrinally dense closing benediction is exactly where an inadvertent reversion to தேவன் would be most conspicuous and most damaging.
Times And Seasons
Approved rendering: காலங்களும் சமயங்களும்
Transliteration: kaalangalum samayangalum
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Original: χρόνοι καὶ καιροί
Category: Eschatology
NEW term for this book. Used at 5:1 (χρόνων καὶ καιρῶν). Stands in direct, productive tension with Tamil Nadu’s living panchangam (பஞ்சாங்கம்) almanac culture, which computes auspicious/inauspicious times for virtually every significant life event. The Day’s certainty paired with its incalculability is the opposite of what an almanac-based worldview offers; must not be rendered so as to invite date-calculation, and must not adopt panchangam-specific technical vocabulary (avoid நல்ல நேரம், ராகு காலம் as direct equivalents).
Medium Risk Terms
Church
Approved rendering: சபை
Transliteration: sabai
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Rejected alternatives: கோவில்
Original: ἐκκλησία
Category: Church
Inherited exactly from the baseline package. Used at 1:1, 2:14 for the Thessalonian congregation.
Peace
Approved rendering: சமாதானம்
Transliteration: samadhanam
Doctrine: Peace with God
Original: εἰρήνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited exactly from the baseline package. Used at 1:1; distinguish from the false ‘peace and safety’ of 5:3 (see peace_and_safety below) and from the God-given peace of 5:23 (see god_of_peace below).
Love
Approved rendering: அன்பு
Transliteration: anbu
Doctrine: Sanctification / Faith-Hope-Love Triad
Rejected alternatives: பக்தி, காதல்
Original: ἀγάπη
Category: Sanctification
Inherited exactly from the baseline package. Used at 1:3; 3:6, 12; 4:9 (brotherly love compound, see brotherly_love below); 5:8 (breastplate), 5:13. Never பக்தி or காதல்.
Kingdom Of God
Approved rendering: தேவனுடைய ராஜ்யம்
Transliteration: Devanudaiya Rajyam
Doctrine: Kingdom Mission
Original: βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Kingdom
Inherited exactly from the baseline package as a fixed proper-phrase compound. Used at 2:12 (‘walk worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory’).
Apostle
Approved rendering: அப்போஸ்தலன்
Transliteration: appostalan
Doctrine: Apostleship
Rejected alternatives: குரு
Original: ἀπόστολος
Category: Church
Inherited exactly from the baseline package. Used at 2:6 (Paul’s team’s self-designation). Never குரு.
Joy Rejoice
Approved rendering: சந்தோஷம் / சந்தோஷப்படுதல்
Transliteration: santhosham / santhoshappaduthal
Doctrine: Joy in Suffering
Original: χαρά / χαίρω
Category: Discipleship
Inherited exactly from the baseline package (Philippians). Used at 1:6 (joy of the Holy Spirit amid affliction), 2:19-20, 3:9, 5:16 (rejoice always). Must coexist with real affliction, never flatten into detachment-based equanimity.
Rejoice In The Lord Always
Approved rendering: கர்த்தருக்குள் எப்பொழுதும் சந்தோஷப்படுங்கள்
Transliteration: karthaarukkul eppozhuthum santhoshappadungal
Doctrine: Joy in Suffering
Inherited exactly from the baseline package (Philippians 4:4 pattern). 1 Thessalonians 5:16 (‘rejoice always’) is a shorter form of the same doctrinal anchor; keep the ‘in the Lord’ sense present in surrounding context even where the bare imperative appears.
Affliction
Approved rendering: உபத்திரவம்
Transliteration: upathiravam
Doctrine: Thanksgiving and Joy amid Affliction
Original: θλῖψις
Category: Discipleship
Inherited exactly from the baseline package (established Tamil Bible term, already used for the Colossians filling_up_christs_afflictions doctrine). Used at 1:6; 3:3, 7. No new risk beyond consistency.
Fellow Imitators
Approved rendering: பின்பற்றுவோர்
Transliteration: pinpatruvor
Doctrine: Humanity of Christ / Discipleship
Original: μιμηταί
Category: Discipleship
Inherited exactly from the baseline package (Philippians fellow_imitators pattern). Used at 1:6; 2:14 (imitation of Paul’s team and, ultimately, the Lord).
Day Of Christ
Approved rendering: கிறிஸ்துவின் நாள்
Transliteration: Kiristhuvin naal
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord (cross-reference)
Inherited exactly from the baseline package (Philippians). Not used verbatim in 1 Thessalonians but doctrinally unified with ‘the Day of the Lord’ (கர்த்தருடைய நாள், 5:2, see day_of_the_lord below) as the same future event under a different NT phrase-tradition. Teaching material must state this unity explicitly.
Light Versus Darkness
Approved rendering: ஒளியின் பிள்ளைகள்
Transliteration: oliyin pillaigal
Doctrine: Watchfulness and Identity as Sons of Light
Inherited exactly from the baseline package (Ephesians light_versus_darkness pattern). Extended at 5:5 to the full compounds ‘sons of light/day’ and ‘sons of night/darkness’ — see sons_of_light_and_day and sons_of_night_and_darkness below. Ontological identity language (‘you ARE light’), not mere proximity to light.
Blameless Children Crooked Generation
Approved rendering: குற்றமற்ற பிள்ளைகள் / கோணலான சந்ததி
Transliteration: kutramatra pillaigal / konalaana santhathi
Doctrine: Sanctification (blameless standard)
Inherited root குற்றமற்ற exactly from the baseline package (Ephesians/Philippians). Reused at 3:13 and 5:23 (‘kept blameless,’ see kept_blameless below).
Archangel
Approved rendering: பிரதான தூதன்
Transliteration: pirathaana thoothan
Doctrine: The Return of Christ
Original: ἀρχάγγελος
Category: Eschatology
NEW term for this book. Used at 4:16. தூதன் (messenger/angel) is an established, low-ambiguity Tamil Bible term; பிரதான (‘chief/principal’) avoids implying angel-veneration, distinguishing this herald role from the Colossians worship_of_angels caution, which is not triggered here.
Trumpet Of God
Approved rendering: கடவுளுடைய எக்காளம்
Transliteration: Kadavuludaiya ekkaalam
Doctrine: The Return of Christ
Original: σάλπιγξ θεοῦ
Category: God
NEW term for this book. Used at 4:16. எக்காளம் is the established Tamil Bible word for the ceremonial/military trumpet. கடவுளுடைய (not தேவனுடைய) must be enforced per the baseline God-word decision — a lapse here would be conspicuous at this doctrinally dense verse.
Crown Of Boasting
Approved rendering: மேன்மையின் கிரீடம்
Transliteration: menmaiyin kireedam
Doctrine: The Return of Christ (Paul’s ministry joy)
Original: στέφανος καυχήσεως
Category: Eschatology
NEW compound for this book, reusing the established மேன்மைபாராட்டுதல் root. Used at 2:19 — Paul’s converts themselves as his crown ‘at his coming’ (παρουσία). Must not read as a merit-payout image but as relational joy over ministry fruit.
Sexual Immorality
Approved rendering: வேசித்தனம்
Transliteration: vesithanam
Doctrine: Sexual Purity and Holiness of the Body
Original: πορνεία
Category: Sin
NEW term for this book. Used at 4:3 (πορνεία). Established Tamil Bible moral-category term; must be kept as broad as the Greek category, never narrowed to one culturally specific offense.
Vessel
Approved rendering: பாத்திரம்
Transliteration: paathiram
Doctrine: Sanctification / Sexual Purity
Original: σκεῦος
Category: Sanctification
NEW term for this book. Used at 4:4 (σκεῦος), a genuinely disputed term (‘one’s own body’ or ‘one’s own wife’). Retain the literal rendering; record both candidate referents for reviewer resolution rather than silently picking one. Must not imply body-denial or ascetic body-negation.
Lustful Passion
Approved rendering: இச்சை / மோகம்
Transliteration: ichchai / moham
Doctrine: Sexual Purity and Holiness of the Body
Original: ἐπιθυμία / πάθος ἐπιθυμίας
Category: Sin
NEW term for this book. Used at 4:5 (ἐπιθυμία / πάθος ἐπιθυμίας). Bounded, illicit sexual passion here; must NOT be conflated with the Philippians-package caution against treating ordinary desire itself as something to be extinguished (contentment_in_christ, a different doctrinal object).
Impurity
Approved rendering: அசுத்தம்
Transliteration: asuththam
Doctrine: Sexual Purity and Holiness of the Body / Sanctification
Original: ἀκαθαρσία
Category: Sin
NEW term for this book. Used at 4:7 (ἀκαθαρσία). Moral-ethical impurity, distinct from the Colossians-package critique of ritual purity codes (தீட்டு); 4:7 must not be misread as reinstating a purity code Colossians 2:16-23 already rejected.
Established Strengthened
Approved rendering: உறுதிப்படுத்துதல்
Transliteration: uruthippaduthuthal
Doctrine: Sanctification / Perseverance
Original: στηρίζω
Category: Sanctification
NEW term for this book. Used at 3:2, 13 (στηρίζω). Must read as God’s/the apostles’ strengthening work meeting genuine human faith, not merit-earning perseverance, per the Colossians-package caution against re-importing merit into perseverance language.
Kept Blameless
Approved rendering: குற்றமற்றதாகக் காக்கப்படுதல்
Transliteration: kutramatradhaaga kaakkappaduthal
Doctrine: Complete Sanctification at Christ’s Coming
Original: ἀμέμπτως τηρηθείη
Category: Sanctification
NEW compound for this book, reusing குற்றமற்ற. Used at 5:23 (ἀμέμπτως τηρηθείη). Passive voice — this is God’s preserving work, not the believer’s self-maintained achievement.
Watch And Be Sober
Approved rendering: விழித்திருத்தல் / தெளிந்திருத்தல்
Transliteration: vizhithirukkal / thelinthirukkal
Doctrine: Watchfulness and Identity as Sons of Light
Original: γρηγορέω / νήφω
Category: Eschatology
NEW term for this book. Used at 5:6, 8 (γρηγορέω / νήφω). The positive ethical posture appropriate to those who know the Day is coming but not its hour.
Grieve
Approved rendering: துக்கப்படுதல்
Transliteration: thukkappaduthal
Doctrine: Hope in Grief
Original: λυπέω
Category: Discipleship
NEW term for this book. Used at 4:13 (λυπέω). Paul does NOT forbid grief itself — only grief ‘as others who have no hope.’ This qualifying phrase must always travel with the verb in Tamil so grief itself is never mistaught as forbidden to believers.
Satan
Approved rendering: சாத்தான்
Transliteration: Saathaan
Doctrine: Spiritual Opposition and Satan
Original: Σατανᾶς
Category: Spiritual Warfare
NEW transliterated proper name for this book. Used at 2:18. Same referent as the already-fixed baseline title பிசாசு (devil, above) — teach as two names for ONE defeated personal adversary, never two separate spirits, and never assimilated into the Tamil folk taxonomy of afflicting spirits (பேய், முனி, மோகினி).
Tempter
Approved rendering: சோதிக்கிறவன்
Transliteration: sodhikkiravan
Doctrine: Spiritual Opposition and Satan
Original: ὁ πειράζων
Category: Spiritual Warfare
NEW term for this book. Used at 3:5 (ὁ πειράζων). Title for the same adversary named சாத்தான்/பிசாசு; connect in teaching material to the already-established ‘already defeated’ spiritual-warfare framing from the Ephesians package.
Church Leadership Functions
Approved rendering: உழைக்கிறவர்கள்… முன்நின்று நடத்துகிறவர்கள்… புத்திமதி சொல்கிறவர்கள்
Transliteration: uzhaikkiravargal… munninru nadathukiravargal… buthimathi solkiravargal
Doctrine: Brotherly Love and Church Order
Original: τοὺς κοπιῶντας… προϊσταμένους… νουθετοῦντας
Category: Church
NEW term for this book. Used at 5:12-13 (τοὺς κοπιῶντας… προϊσταμένους… νουθετοῦντας). Function-based, not title-based, congregational leadership language, distinct from ἐπίσκοπος/διάκονος already fixed in Philippians. Never குரு for any leadership function named here.
Thief In The Night
Approved rendering: இராக்காலத் திருடன் போல
Transliteration: iraakkaalath thirudan pola
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Original: κλέπτης ἐν νυκτί
Category: Eschatology
NEW term for this book. Used at 5:2 (κλέπτης ἐν νυκτί). The unpredictability applies to unbelievers’ unpreparedness (v.3), not to believers, who are explicitly ‘not in darkness’ about its coming (v.4) — this contrast must be preserved.
Sons Of Light And Day
Approved rendering: ஒளியின் பிள்ளைகள் / பகலின் பிள்ளைகள்
Transliteration: oliyin pillaigal / pagalin pillaigal
Doctrine: Watchfulness and Identity as Sons of Light
Original: υἱοὶ φωτός / υἱοὶ ἡμέρας
Category: Eschatology
NEW compound for this book, reusing the Ephesians light_versus_darkness ontological-identity pattern. Used at 5:5. Believers ARE light, not merely reside near it; this passage’s light is moral-relational union with the Lord, not the ritual illumination of temple-lamp or Deepavali imagery.
Sons Of Night And Darkness
Approved rendering: இரவின் பிள்ளைகள் / இருளின் பிள்ளைகள்
Transliteration: iravin pillaigal / irulin pillaigal
Doctrine: Watchfulness and Identity as Sons of Light
Original: υἱοὶ νυκτὸς / υἱοὶ σκότους
Category: Eschatology
NEW compound for this book, same term-family as sons_of_light_and_day. Used at 5:5. The negative counterpart identity that believers no longer belong to, grounding the watchfulness ethic that follows.
Low Risk Terms
Boast
Approved rendering: மேன்மைபாராட்டுதல்
Transliteration: menmai-paraattuthal
Doctrine: Salvation by Grace through Faith
Inherited exactly from the baseline package (Ephesians). Root reused at 2:19-20 for the ‘crown of boasting’ compound — see crown_of_boasting below; must read as relational joy over ministry fruit, never a merit payout.
Thanksgiving
Approved rendering: ஸ்தோத்திரம்
Transliteration: sthothiram
Doctrine: Thanksgiving
Original: εὐχαριστία / εὐχαριστέω
Category: Faith
Inherited exactly from the baseline package. Used at 1:2; 2:13; 3:9; 5:18 (‘give thanks in all circumstances’).

Approved rendering: நடத்தல்
Transliteration: nadaththal
Doctrine: The Worthy Walk / Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: மார்க்கத்தில் செல்லுதல்
Original: περιπατέω
Category: Sanctification
Inherited exactly from the baseline package (Ephesians). Used at 2:12; 4:1, 12. Never மார்க்கம் (religious-path framing).
Mutual Edification
Approved rendering: பக்திவளர்ச்சி
Transliteration: bakthivalarchi
Doctrine: Mutual Edification
Original: οἰκοδομέω
Category: Church
Inherited exactly from the baseline package (Romans doctrine term). Used at 5:11, paired with the encouragement command — see encourage_one_another below.
Covetousness
Approved rendering: பொருளாசை
Transliteration: porulaasai
Doctrine: Apostolic Ministry Integrity
Original: πλεονεξία
Category: Sin
Reuses the root already fixed in the baseline package’s covetousness_is_idolatry entry (Colossians). Used at 2:5, where Paul denies his ministry was motivated by greed.
Prophecy
Approved rendering: தீர்க்கதரிசனம்
Transliteration: theerkkadharisanam
Doctrine: Inspiration of Scripture
Original: προφητεία
Category: Covenant
Inherited exactly from the baseline package. Used at 5:20-21 (‘do not despise prophecies… test everything’).
First Sequence Marker
Approved rendering: முதலாவதாக
Transliteration: mudhalaavathaaga
Doctrine: Resurrection of Believers
Original: πρῶτον
Category: Eschatology
NEW term for this book. Used at 4:16 (πρῶτον). Low lexical risk but doctrinally load-bearing: the pastoral comfort of the entire passage depends on this sequence word’s placement being preserved (the dead rise BEFORE the living are caught up) and never dropped or repositioned.
Brotherly Love
Approved rendering: சகோதர அன்பு
Transliteration: sakodhara anbu
Doctrine: Brotherly Love and Church Order
Original: φιλαδελφία
Category: Sanctification
NEW compound for this book, built on the baseline-fixed அன்பு. Used at 4:9 (φιλαδελφία, God-taught love among believers).
Uninformed
Approved rendering: அறியாதிருக்க
Transliteration: ariyaathirukka
Doctrine: Hope in Grief
Original: ἀγνοέω
Category: Discipleship
NEW term for this book. Used at 4:13 (ἀγνοέω). Plain cognitive verb; Paul is closing a specific catechetical gap about believers who die before the Parousia.
Encourage One Another
Approved rendering: ஒருவரையொருவர் உற்சாகப்படுத்துங்கள்
Transliteration: oruvaraiyoruvar utchagappaduthungal
Doctrine: Hope in Grief / Mutual Encouragement
Rejected alternatives: வேண்டுகோள் sense (reserved for entreaty contexts)
Original: παρακαλεῖτε ἀλλήλους
Category: Faith
Reuses the baseline exhort entry in its encouragement sense (உற்சாகப்படுத்துதல்). Used at 4:18 and restated generally at 5:11. Doctrinally central despite low lexical risk: this is the passage’s own purpose statement — the comfort must stay tethered to the specific doctrinal content of 4:14-17, never generic bereavement sentiment.
These Words
Approved rendering: இந்த வார்த்தைகளினாலே
Transliteration: indha vaarthaigalinaale
Doctrine: Hope in Grief
Original: λόγοις τούτοις
Category: Faith
NEW term for this book. Used at 4:18 (λόγοις τούτοις). Forbids detaching the pastoral comfort of 4:13-18 from its specific grounding doctrinal content (Christ’s resurrection, the resurrection sequence, permanent presence with the Lord).
Fainthearted And Weak
Approved rendering: மனந்தளர்ந்தவர்கள் / பலவீனர்கள்
Transliteration: mananthalarnthavargal / palaveenargal
Doctrine: Brotherly Love and Church Order
Original: ὀλιγόψυχοι / ἀσθενοῦντες
Category: Church
NEW term for this book. Used at 5:14 (ὀλιγόψυχοι / ἀσθενοῦντες). Pastoral triage categories, directly relevant to grief-comfort ministry in this letter’s pastoral setting.
Full Assurance
Approved rendering: முழு நிச்சயம்
Transliteration: muzhu nichchayam
Doctrine: Gospel
Original: πληροφορία
Category: Faith
NEW term for this book. Used at 1:5 (πληροφορία, ‘much full conviction’ accompanying the gospel’s proclamation). Shares a root-family with πλήρωμα/fullness but is a distinct lexeme; no doctrinal collision, low ambiguity.
Medium-High Risk Terms
Will Bring With Him
Approved rendering: கொண்டுவருவார்
Transliteration: konduvaruvaar
Doctrine: Resurrection of Believers / Hope in Grief
Original: ἄξει
Category: Eschatology
NEW term for this book. Used at 4:14 (ἄξει). Must not be rendered so as to suggest the dead are ‘reincarnated back’ or released from a holding cycle; render as a personal escort by God, consistent with depart_and_be_with_christ above.
Low-Medium Risk Terms
Peace And Safety
Approved rendering: சமாதானமும் சுகமும்
Transliteration: samadhanamum sugamum
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Original: εἰρήνη καὶ ἀσφάλεια
Category: Eschatology
NEW compound for this book, reusing சமாதானம் in its false/complacent sense. Used at 5:3 (εἰρήνη καὶ ἀσφάλεια), possibly echoing Roman imperial propaganda. Must stay distinguishable in context from கடவுளுடைய சமாதானம் (the God-given peace of 5:23).
