English → Tamil | Colossians | Full-book coverage | Core passage: Colossians 1:15-23

Source language: English Destination language: Tamil Curriculum: Colossians Core passage: Colossians 1:15-23 Generated: 2026-07-08 (full-book regeneration; supersedes the 2026-07-07 core-passage-only version) Language baseline: Tamil Romans Language Package (language-packages/tamil/) — all Romans-established renderings are reused exactly; see translation_memory.json.

Purpose and scope

This document analyzes the original Koine Greek of the entire letter to the Colossians, all four chapters, first verse to last, to establish the doctrinal and linguistic foundation for every downstream Colossians translation into Tamil. Per the PRD’s full-book-coverage mandate, the core passage (1:15-23, the Christ Hymn and its application) is the letter’s theological anchor and receives verse-by-verse treatment, but it is never treated as the scope boundary. Every other section of the letter is analyzed chapter by chapter with the same rigor: original word, transliteration, literal meaning, semantic range, English variants, contextual theological meaning, and Tamil rendering risk. No section of Colossians is silently skipped.

No Hebrew or Aramaic source text applies to Colossians (a Greek composition throughout); Old Testament background, typology, and allusion are analyzed in 09_cross_reference_analysis.md.

PART A — Core passage: Colossians 1:15-23 (verse-by-verse)

Colossians 1:15-20 is a two-strophe hymn, each strophe opened by ὅς ἐστιν (“who is”) + πρωτότοκος (“firstborn”):

  • Strophe 1 (1:15-17) — Christ and creation: image of the invisible God, firstborn over all creation, agent and goal of all created things, sustainer of the cosmos.
  • Strophe 2 (1:18-20) — Christ and new creation: head of the body (the church), the beginning, firstborn from the dead, bearer of all the fullness, reconciler of all things through the blood of his cross.
  • Application (1:21-23): the Colossians themselves — once alienated and hostile, now reconciled in Christ’s physical body through death, to be presented holy and blameless, if they continue in the faith.

This structure matters for translation: the parallel πρωτότοκος clauses (1:15, 1:18) must receive the identical Tamil rendering so the hymn’s architecture survives.

1. εἰκών (eikōn) — “image” — Colossians 1:15

FieldValue
Transliterationeikōn
Literal meaningImage, likeness, exact representation
Semantic rangePortrait, statue, reflection, manifestation, exact expression of an original
English variantsimage, likeness, exact representation, visible expression
Usage frequency23x NT; christologically at 2 Corinthians 4:4, Colossians 1:15; anthropologically at Genesis 1:26-27 (LXX εἰκών), Colossians 3:10
Contextual meaningChrist is the visible, exact manifestation of the invisible God — not a copy, portrait, or created representation, but the one in whom God is fully seen (cf. John 14:9, Hebrews 1:3)

Tamil rendering risk — Critical. Tamil has an intensely developed vocabulary of divine images because image veneration (murti puja) is central to Tamil temple religion. விக்கிரகம் (vikkirakam, from Sanskrit vigraha) means precisely a consecrated temple idol; சிலை is a statue; உருவம் is a mere outward form. Any of these renders Colossians 1:15 as “Christ is God’s idol” — a catastrophic reading. The established Tamil Bible rendering தற்சுரூபம் (tarcurūpam, “very own form/exact likeness”) is required: it is a Christian technical term with no temple-image usage, and it preserves the “exact representation” force. Note the deliberate contrast the passage itself sets up: the invisible God (அதரிசனமான கடவுள்) has an image not made by hands — the exact inversion of Tamil image-veneration logic, where the visible image mediates an otherwise remote deity. This contrast is an evangelistic asset if the vocabulary is kept clean, and a syncretism trap if it is not.

2. ἀόρατος (aoratos) — “invisible” — Colossians 1:15, 16

FieldValue
Transliterationaoratos
Semantic rangeUnseen, unseeable, invisible
English variantsinvisible, unseen
Contextual meaning1:15 — God’s invisibility (cf. 1 Timothy 1:17); 1:16 — invisible created realities (thrones, dominions, rulers, authorities)

Tamil rendering risk — Medium. அதரிசனமான (atarisanamāna, “un-seeable”) is established. The term must not drift toward நிராகாரம் (formless, nirguna/formless-absolute vocabulary from Vedantic discourse), which would make God an impersonal formless reality rather than a personal God who is unseen yet fully revealed in Christ.

3. πρωτότοκος (prōtotokos) — “firstborn” — Colossians 1:15, 18

FieldValue
Transliterationprōtotokos
Literal meaningFirstborn
Semantic rangeFirst in birth order; by extension, preeminent in rank, the heir (Psalm 89:27 LXX: “I will make him the firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth”)
English variantsfirstborn, firstborn over, supreme heir
Usage frequency8x NT; 1:15 “firstborn of all creation,” 1:18 “firstborn from the dead” (cf. Romans 8:29, Revelation 1:5, Hebrews 1:6)
Contextual meaningRank and heirship, not origin: 1:16-17’s ὅτι (“because all things were created in him… he is before all things”) grounds the title in Christ’s role as creator, which excludes reading him as the first created thing

Tamil rendering risk — Critical. This is the historic Arian proof text, and the Arian misreading has a modern carrier: Jehovah’s Witness material circulating in Tamil renders the phrase to mean the first created being. The established rendering முதற்பேறானவர் (mutaṟpēṟāṉavar, “the firstborn one”) is required, and any rendering implying “first-created” (முதலில் படைக்கப்பட்டவர்) is forbidden. A second, Tamil-specific pressure: in a pantheon frame, “firstborn of all creation” can be heard as seniority among devas (as Murugan and Pillaiyar are ranked as sons of Shiva in Tamil Shaiva devotion). The genitive πάσης κτίσεως is a genitive of subordination (“firstborn over all creation”), not partitive (“firstborn member of creation”); Phase 2 translators must preserve the “over/above” force, and the identical Tamil term must appear at 1:15 and 1:18.

4. κτίσις / κτίζω (ktisis / ktizō) — “creation / create” — Colossians 1:15, 16, 23

FieldValue
Transliterationktisis / ktizō
Semantic rangeThe act of creating; the created order; a created thing
English variantscreation, created things, creature
Contextual meaning1:16 — the totality of created reality, visible and invisible, created “in him, through him, and for him”; 1:23 — “every creature under heaven”

Tamil rendering risk — High. படைப்பு (paṭaippu, creation) with verb படைக்கப்பட்டது (“was created”) is the recommended rendering; the older Sanskrit-derived சிருஷ்டி is acceptable in established citations but படைப்பு is plainer (per the Romans package’s register rule preferring plain established Tamil over heavy Sanskrit compounds). The doctrinal risk is not the word but the frame: Tamil Hindu cosmologies (Saiva Siddhanta’s evolution of the tattvas from Shiva-Shakti; Vedantic emanation; cyclical srishti-sthiti-samhara, creation-preservation-dissolution recurring across cosmic ages) read “creation” as beginningless cyclical emanation. Colossians asserts a once, personal, ex nihilo creation with Christ as agent (δι’ αὐτοῦ) and goal (εἰς αὐτόν). Translators must keep the prepositional structure explicit: அவருக்குள் (in him), அவர் மூலமாய் (through him), அவருக்கென்று (for him).

5. τὰ πάντα (ta panta) — “all things” — Colossians 1:16, 17, 18, 20

Tamil rendering risk — Medium. சகலமும் / எல்லாம் (all things). The universality must never be softened — the hymn repeats τὰ πάντα five times deliberately, against any claim (ancient or modern) that some domain of reality lies outside Christ’s supremacy. Same universality-preservation rule the Romans package applies to “all have sinned.”

6. θρόνοι, κυριότητες, ἀρχαί, ἐξουσίαι — “thrones, dominions, rulers, authorities” — Colossians 1:16

FieldValue
Transliterationthronoi, kyriotētes, archai, exousiai
Semantic rangeGraded ranks of spiritual/angelic powers, hostile or otherwise; also earthly authority structures
Contextual meaningEvery rank of invisible power is a creature, created through and for Christ — the premise for 2:15’s disarming of the powers and 2:18’s rejection of angel veneration

Tamil rendering risk — High. Established renderings: சிங்காசனங்கள், கர்த்தத்துவங்கள், துரைத்தனங்கள், அதிகாரங்கள். The risk is contextual: Tamil popular religion has a dense, living hierarchy of intermediate spirit-powers — village guardian deities (காவல் தெய்வங்கள் such as Ayyanar, Madurai Veeran, Karuppasamy), lineage deities (குலதெய்வம்), planetary powers (நவக்கிரகங்கள், whose shrines stand in nearly every Tamil temple), and malevolent spirits (பேய், பிசாசு). Readers will instinctively map “thrones, dominions, rulers, authorities” onto this hierarchy. The translation must let that mapping do its intended work — these powers are created and subordinate, therefore neither to be feared nor venerated — without adding or naming any Tamil deity category in the text itself. This term family recurs at 2:10 (head of all rule and authority) and 2:15 (disarmed the rulers and authorities); the identical Tamil renderings must be used at every occurrence.

7. συνέστηκεν (synestēken) — “hold together” — Colossians 1:17

Tamil rendering risk — Medium. அவருக்குள் சகலமும் நிலைநிற்கிறது (“in him all things stand firm/subsist”). Guard against an impersonal-principle reading: Christ is not a cosmic law or force (சக்தி is already forbidden in this package for God’s power) but the personal sustainer. Connects to the Romans package’s Providence entry (தேவனுடைய பராமரிப்பு, never ஊழ்).

8. κεφαλή (kephalē) — “head” — Colossians 1:18 (cf. 2:10, 2:19, 3:18-19)

Tamil rendering risk — Medium. தலை. The head-body metaphor (Christ the head, the church his body) transfers naturally into Tamil. The doctrinal load: authority plus organic union plus source of life (2:19 — the whole body grows from the head). Do not reduce to institutional headship (“president/leader of the church”); தலைவர் alone flattens the metaphor and, in Tamil Nadu, தலைவர் carries strong cinema/political-leader resonance. The same word (தலை) recurs in the household code (3:18 husband as head of the wife); translators must keep the Christ-head/church-body sense and the husband-head/wife sense visibly related but must not collapse Christ’s cosmic headship into a mere domestic-authority analogy — the former grounds and qualifies the latter (3:18’s “as is fitting in the Lord”), not the reverse.

9. ἀρχή (archē) — “the beginning” — Colossians 1:18

FieldValue
Transliterationarchē
Semantic rangeBeginning, origin, first principle, ruler
English variantsbeginning, origin, ruler, first cause
Contextual meaningChrist as the origin and founder of the new creation, inaugurated in his resurrection (“the beginning, the firstborn from the dead”)

Tamil rendering risk — High. ஆதி (āti, beginning/primordial origin) is the established rendering (cf. Revelation 22:13, ஆதியும் அந்தமும்). Note the collision: ஆதி is also productive in Tamil Hindu vocabulary (ஆதிசிவன் “primordial Shiva,” ஆதிசக்தி “primordial Shakti,” ஆதிநாதர் in Jain usage for the first tirthankara). In context with மரித்தோரிலிருந்து முதற்பேறானவர் the sense stays controlled; standalone uses of ஆதி for Christ should carry the full phrase, not the bare epithet.

10. πλήρωμα (plērōma) — “fullness” — Colossians 1:19 (cf. 2:9-10)

FieldValue
Transliterationplērōma
Literal meaningThat which fills; full measure; completeness
Semantic rangeFullness, totality, complete content
English variantsfullness, full measure, all the fullness
Usage frequency17x NT; the theological center of Colossians (1:19; 2:9 “all the fullness of deity dwells bodily”)
Contextual meaningThe entire divine essence and presence dwells in Christ — permanently (κατοικῆσαι, take up residence, not a temporary visit), by the Father’s good pleasure, and (2:9) σωματικῶς, bodily

Tamil rendering risk — Critical. பரிபூரணம் (paripūraṇam, complete fullness) is the required rendering. The collision is real and sophisticated: pūrṇa/பூரணம் is a loaded term in Vedantic discourse (the śānti-mantra “pūrṇam adaḥ, pūrṇam idam” — “that is full, this is full” — describing Brahman’s undiminishable fullness), and in Tamil Saiva usage பூரணம் can describe the all-pervading completeness of Shiva. Colossians’ claim is different in kind: the fullness dwells in one historical, embodied person, permanently, by the Father’s will. The qualifiers carry the doctrine and must never be dropped: தெய்வத்துவத்தின் பரிபூரணம் (the fullness of deity), சரீரப்பிரகாரமாக (bodily, 2:9), வாசமாயிருக்க (to dwell/reside, 1:19). “Fullness” reduced to an abstract quality, or generalized to a pervading presence in all things, reproduces pantheism rather than incarnation. 2:10’s “you have been filled in him” (πεπληρωμένοι) reuses the same root and must echo the same Tamil term family so the reader sees that believers’ completeness derives entirely from Christ’s own fullness.

11. κατοικῆσαι (katoikēsai) — “to dwell” — Colossians 1:19 (cf. 2:9 κατοικεῖ)

Tamil rendering risk — High. வாசமாயிருத்தல் (to take up residence). The Greek is the settled-residence verb (katoikeō), not the temporary-sojourn verb (paroikeō) — the fullness resides in Christ permanently. This is precisely the anti-avatar point: not a divine descent for a season (அவதாரம் is forbidden throughout this package) but permanent embodied indwelling. In 2:9 the present tense κατοικεῖ means the fullness dwells in the risen Christ now.

12. ἀποκαταλλάξαι (apokatallaxai) — “to reconcile” — Colossians 1:20, 22

FieldValue
Transliterationapokatallassō
Literal meaningTo reconcile fully, restore to right relationship (intensified form of katallassō)
Semantic rangeRestoration of a broken personal relationship; ending of enmity
English variantsreconcile, restore, bring back into right relationship
Usage frequencyOnly Colossians 1:20, 1:22 and Ephesians 2:16 (the intensified form); the base form in Romans 5:10, 2 Corinthians 5:18-20
Contextual meaningGod, through Christ’s blood shed on the cross, ends the enmity between himself and rebellious creatures — cosmic in scope (1:20 “all things, whether on earth or in heaven”), personally applied (1:21-22 “you, who once were alienated”)

Tamil rendering risk — Critical. ஒப்புரவாக்குதல் (oppuravākkutal) is the established Tamil Bible term and is genuinely strong: ஒப்புரவு is an old Tamil word for restored concord between estranged parties. Two forbidden drifts: (a) சமாதானப்படுத்துதல் (pacifying/calming) reduces reconciliation to appeasement of an angry deity — precisely the logic of Tamil ritual appeasement; (b) பரிகாரம் (parikāram, ritual remedy) is the living Tamil temple category for removing sin, dosha, or planetary affliction through prescribed ritual acts — the exact works-based frame the cross abolishes. Reconciliation in Colossians is God’s initiative, accomplished once by Christ’s blood, received not performed.

13. εἰρηνοποιήσας (eirēnopoiēsas) — “having made peace” — Colossians 1:20

Tamil rendering risk — Medium. சமாதானத்தை உண்டாக்கி (“having made peace”). Reuses the Romans-established சமாதானம் (peace with God, not psychological calm). The instrument is specified: διὰ τοῦ αἵματος τοῦ σταυροῦ αὐτοῦ, “through the blood of his cross” — அவருடைய சிலுவையின் இரத்தத்தினாலே. The blood-language must be kept literal and historical: Tamil readers know blood offerings from village Amman worship (animal sacrifice remains a live practice at many village shrines), and the translation must present Christ’s blood as the once-for-all self-offering that ends sacrifice, not as one more efficacious blood rite.

14. ἀπηλλοτριωμένους (apēllotriōmenous) — “alienated” — Colossians 1:21

Tamil rendering risk — Medium. அந்நியராயிருந்த (“having been strangers/estranged”). With ἐχθροὺς τῇ διανοίᾳ (“enemies in mind,” மனதிலே சத்துருக்கள்) — the estrangement is relational and moral (ἐν τοῖς ἔργοις τοῖς πονηροῖς, “in evil deeds”), not ontological distance or karmic burden. Do not let the rendering drift toward separation as ignorance (அறியாமை, avidya) — the Vedantic diagnosis — rather than willed enmity, the biblical diagnosis.

15. ἐν τῷ σώματι τῆς σαρκὸς αὐτοῦ (en tō sōmati tēs sarkos autou) — “in his body of flesh” — Colossians 1:22

Tamil rendering risk — High. அவருடைய மாம்ச சரீரத்திலே. The doubled phrase (“body of flesh, through death”) deliberately stresses physical reality against any docetic or apparition christology — directly relevant in Tamil, where avatar theology can treat divine embodiment as a temporary appearance-form. Reuses the Romans package’s Humanity of Christ doctrine: real, physical human nature, not an illusion or manifestation.

16. ἁγίους καὶ ἀμώμους καὶ ἀνεγκλήτους (hagious kai amōmous kai anenklētous) — “holy, blameless, above reproach” — Colossians 1:22

Tamil rendering risk — Medium. பரிசுத்தராகவும் குற்றமற்றவர்களாகவும் கண்டிக்கப்படாதவர்களாகவும். Reuses Romans-established பரிசுத்தம் (holy — moral set-apartness, not ritual purity). ἀμώμους is sacrificial vocabulary (an unblemished offering); the triad describes the believer’s presentation before God on the basis of Christ’s work — status conferred, not purity achieved. Must not be rendered with தூய்மை/சுத்தம் ritual-cleanliness vocabulary that would re-import தீட்டு (pollution/purity-code) logic.

17. εἴ γε ἐπιμένετε τῇ πίστει (ei ge epimenete tē pistei) — “if indeed you continue in the faith” — Colossians 1:23

FieldValue
Transliterationei ge epimenete tē pistei
Semantic rangeConditional of expectation: “if indeed, as I assume, you continue”
Contextual meaningPerseverance as the evidence of genuine reconciliation, not a meritorious condition that earns it

Tamil rendering risk — High. விசுவாசத்திலே நிலைத்திருந்தால் (“if you remain grounded in the faith”). Two opposite failure modes: (a) softening the condition to nothing (losing the letter’s warning force against drifting to the Colossian error); (b) hardening it into salvation-by-persistence, which re-imports merit. The Greek εἴ γε expresses confidence, not doubt. Reuses Romans-established விசுவாசம் (faith — personal trust in Christ, never பக்தி). The building metaphors (τεθεμελιωμένοι “grounded,” ἑδραῖοι “steadfast,” μὴ μετακινούμενοι “not shifting”) should keep their architectural concreteness: அஸ்திபாரத்தின்மேல் நிலைபெற்றவர்களாய், உறுதியாய், அசையாமல்.

18. ἐλπίς (elpis) — “hope” — Colossians 1:23 (cf. 1:5, 1:27)

Tamil rendering risk — Medium. நம்பிக்கை. Biblical hope is confident expectation grounded in accomplished fact (the resurrection), not wishful uncertainty. Colossians uses it three structural times: the hope stored up in heaven (1:5), the hope of the gospel (1:23), and Christ in you, the hope of glory (1:27) — the same Tamil term must appear in all three so the letter’s thread is visible. In 1:27 the full clause உங்களில் கிறிஸ்து, மகிமையின் நம்பிக்கை is Critical-risk (see 08_core_glossary.md on the antaryāmi collision).

PART B — Full-book chapter-by-chapter coverage

Chapter 1, remainder (1:1-14, 1:24-29)

Chapter 1 outside the core hymn contains four dense clusters of new terms: the greeting and thanksgiving (1:1-8), the prayer for spiritual knowledge (1:9-14), and Paul’s account of his sufferings and ministry (1:24-29).

1:1-8 — Greeting and thanksgiving

TermsVariantsContextual meaningTamil rendering risk
ἀπόστολος Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ διὰ θελήματος θεοῦ
apostolos… dia thelēmatos theou
apostle by God’s will
apostle by the will of GodPaul’s authority is grounded in divine appointment, not self-assertion or human commissioningLow. Reuses Romans-established அப்போஸ்தலன் and தேவனுடைய சித்தத்தினாலே; no new risk.
πίστις ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ / ἀγάπη εἰς πάντας τοὺς ἁγίους
pistis en Christō / agapē eis… hagious
faith in Christ Jesus, love for all the saints
faith, loveThe Colossians’ faith and love are grounded in and flow from the hope reserved in heaven (1:5) — the classic Pauline faith-love-hope triadLow. Reuses Romans-established விசுவாசம், பரிசுத்தவான்கள்; ஆகாபே-love (அன்பு) is well-established, low ambiguity.

the gospel is bearing fruit and growingThe gospel’s worldwide, organic advance (1:6) “in the whole world,” paralleling its growth among the Colossians since they first heard itMedium. காய்த்துப் பெருகிக்கொண்டு (“bearing fruit and multiplying”) — an agricultural metaphor that transfers naturally into Tamil, but must not be flattened into mere institutional growth; keep the organic, Spirit-caused sense.
Ἐπαφρᾶς…πιστὸς ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν διάκονος τοῦ Χριστοῦ
Epaphras… pistos… diakonos tou Christou
Epaphras, a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf

1:9-14 — Prayer for spiritual wisdom and the transfer of kingdoms

TermsVariantsContextual meaningTamil rendering risk
ἐπίγνωσις τοῦ θελήματος αὐτοῦ ἐν πάσῃ σοφίᾳ καὶ συνέσει πνευματικῇ
epignōsis… en pasē sophia kai synesei pneumatikē
full/experiential knowledge of his will, in all spiritual wisdom and understanding
full knowledge, deep knowledgeNot mere information but Spirit-given, applied knowledge that issues directly in a worthy walk (1:10) — the letter’s programmatic prayer, echoed and intensified at 2:2-3 and 3:10High. முழு அறிவு / ஆழ்ந்த அறிவு for ἐπίγνωσις (deeper than γνῶσις, plain knowledge). Tamil religious culture prizes esoteric, guru-transmitted higher knowledge (ஞானோபதேசம்); this ἐπίγνωσις must be shown as available to every believer through the Spirit and Scripture, not a graduated initiation reserved for advanced disciples. See ஞானம் (wisdom) entry in 08_core_glossary.md for the parallel risk with σοφία.
περιπατῆσαι ἀξίως τοῦ κυρίου… καρποφοροῦντες…αὐξανόμενοι
peripatēsai axiōs… karpophorountes… auxanomenoi
to walk worthily of the Lord… bearing fruit… growing
walk worthy, live worthyEthical life as the fruit of true knowledge, not a separate track from it — sets up the letter’s later ethical sections (3:1-4:6) as the outworking of 1:9-10’s prayer, not an appendix to itLow. தகுதியாக நடந்துகொள்ளுதல் (to walk/conduct oneself worthily) is standard established Tamil Bible idiom; படைப்பு-root காய்த்து as above.
κράτος…εἰς πᾶσαν ὑπομονὴν καὶ μακροθυμίαν μετὰ χαρᾶς
kratos… hypomonēn kai makrothymian meta charas
strengthened… for all endurance and patience with joy
endurance, patience, joyDivine strengthening (not self-generated willpower) that produces joyful endurance under trial — directly relevant given the letter’s later concern with suffering (1:24)Low. பொறுமை/நீடிய பொறுமை (endurance/patience) established vocabulary; keep the divine-empowerment source (κράτος τῆς δόξης αὐτοῦ, “his glorious might”) explicit so endurance is not read as stoic self-discipline.
μερίδα τοῦ κλήρου τῶν ἁγίων ἐν τῷ φωτί
merida tou klērou tōn hagiōn en tō phōti
share/portion of the inheritance of the saints in light
share in the inheritanceBelievers’ qualification (ἱκανώσαντι, “he has qualified you”) for a portion in the saints’ shared inheritance — grace-given standing, echoed at 3:24’s κληρονομίαMedium. பங்கு (portion/share) + சுதந்தரம் (inheritance, established Romans/Colossians term, see 08_core_glossary.md). Must keep ἱκανώσαντι (“he qualified you”) as God’s own act, not a merit threshold cleared by the believer.
ἐρρύσατο ἐκ τῆς ἐξουσίας τοῦ σκότους καὶ μετέστησεν εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ υἱοῦ τῆς ἀγάπης αὐτοῦ
errysato… exousias tou skotous… metestēsen… basileian tou huiou tēs agapēs autou
he rescued us from the domain/authority of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of the Son of his love
delivered from darkness, transferred to the kingdomA decisive, completed act (aorist tense) of rescue from one ruling domain and relocation into another — the letter’s foundational deliverance claim, underlying the whole warning against reverting to the “elemental principles” (2:8, 20)Critical. இருளின் அதிகாரத்திலிருந்து மீட்டு, தமது நேச குமாரனுடைய ராஜ்யத்திற்கு மாற்றினார் (“he rescued [us] from the authority of darkness and transferred [us] to the kingdom of his beloved Son”). இருள் (darkness) as a moral-spiritual domain must not collapse into Tamil astrological “afflicted/dark period” language (ராகு காலம், எட்டாம் வீட்டு தோஷம் and similar malefic-time concepts common in Tamil almanac culture), which would reduce a decisive kingdom-transfer into a temporary bad-luck period to be waited out or ritually managed. This is the same domain-of-darkness concept underlying 2:15’s disarming of the rulers and authorities; keep அதிகாரம் (authority/domain) consistent across both.
ἀπολύτρωσιν, τὴν ἄφεσιν τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν
apolytrōsin, tēn aphesin tōn hamartiōn
redemption, the forgiveness of sins
redemption, forgivenessRedemption defined in apposition as forgiveness of sins — introduced here at 1:14 and expanded at 2:13-14; see 08_core_glossary.md for the full entries (already Critical/High risk, established)High (established). மீட்பு, மன்னிப்பு — carried forward unchanged from the existing glossary entries; no new decision needed, only consistent reuse here at first occurrence.

1:24-29 — Paul’s sufferings and ministry of the mystery

TermsVariantsContextual meaningTamil rendering risk
παθήμασιν…ἀνταναπληρῶ τὰ ὑστερήματα τῶν θλίψεων τοῦ Χριστοῦ
pathēmasin… antanaplērō ta hysterēmata tōn thlipseōn tou Christou
I fill up in my flesh what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions
I complete what is lacking in Christ’s sufferingsA notoriously delicate clause: Paul does NOT mean Christ’s atoning sufferings were insufficient (which would contradict the letter’s own πλήρωμα doctrine at 1:19/2:9); θλῖψις here is the ongoing, corporate afflictions of the Messiah’s body (the church) in mission, which Paul as an apostle-member shares and “fills up his share of”Critical. Must be rendered so it cannot be read as “Christ’s atonement was incomplete” — a reading that would directly contradict this same package’s πரிபூரணம் (fullness) doctrine at 1:19/2:9. Recommended: கிறிஸ்துவின் உபத்திரவங்களில் என் பங்கை நிறைவேற்றுகிறேன் (“I am completing my share/portion in Christ’s afflictions”) — the “my portion/share” framing (பங்கு) keeps the completing action on Paul’s apostolic suffering, not on Christ’s finished redemptive work. Flag for mandatory theologian review in Phase 2 given how easily a plain word-for-word rendering could be misread.
τὴν οἰκονομίαν τοῦ θεοῦ τὴν δοθεῖσάν μοι
tēn oikonomian tou theou tēn dotheisan moi
the stewardship of God given to me
the commission/stewardship given to mePaul’s apostolic office as a household-steward’s entrusted commission (not self-appointed authority), to fully preach/complete the word of GodMedium. ஊழியப்பொறுப்பு / நிர்வாகப்பொறுப்பு (stewardship/administrative charge). Low ambiguity; keep the sense of a delegated trust, distinct from ownership.

Render τέλειος as முதிர்ச்சியுள்ள (mature) rather than பரிபூரணமான (which would re-invoke the 1:19/2:9 πλήρωμα term family and risk conflating creaturely maturity with Christ’s own divine fullness) or சித்தி-adjacent perfection/attainment vocabulary (சித்தி, a Siddhar/yogic-attainment term for perfected spiritual power). The goal is Christlike maturity through gospel teaching available to “every person” (stated twice for emphasis), not a graduated esoteric attainment reserved for advanced initiates.

Chapter 1 summary: every section of chapter 1 has now been analyzed; no portion is without new or Romans-inherited theological vocabulary. The core hymn (1:15-23) remains the chapter’s — and the letter’s — theological center of gravity.

Chapter 2 (2:1-23)

Chapter 2 falls into three movements: Paul’s pastoral concern and the treasures hidden in Christ (2:1-5), the polemic against hollow philosophy with its rich positive counter-statement of union with Christ (2:6-15), and two connected warnings against legalistic and ascetic religion (2:16-23).

2:1-5 — Concern for the Colossians and Laodiceans; treasures hidden in Christ

TermTransliterationContextual meaningTamil rendering risk
ἡλίκον ἀγῶνα ἔχωhēlikon agōna echōhow great a struggle/contest I have (athletic-contest metaphor) for those who have not seen Paul’s faceLow. போராட்டம் (struggle/contest); the athletic metaphor transfers naturally, low ambiguity.
συμβιβασθέντες ἐν ἀγάπῃ…εἰς πᾶν πλοῦτος τῆς πληροφορίας τῆς συνέσεωςsymbibasthentes en agapē… plēroforias tēs syneseōsknit/united together in love, unto all the riches of full assurance of understandingMedium. ஒன்றாய் இணைக்கப்பட்டு (knit/joined together); பரிபூரண நிச்சயம் (full assurance) reuses the பரிபூரணம் root established for πλήρωμα — appropriate here since πληροφορία shares the same πλήρ- root family, and the connection (assurance flows from the same divine fullness) is worth preserving in translation.
ἐν ᾧ εἰσιν πάντες οἱ θησαυροὶ τῆς σοφίας καὶγνώσεως ἀπόκρυφοιen hō eisin pantes hoi thēsauroi tēs sophias kai gnōseōs apokryphoiin whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledgeHigh. எல்லா ஞானத்தையும் அறிவையும் தன்னகத்தே மறைவாய்க் கொண்டிருக்கிறார் — reuses ஞானம் (wisdom, already Critical/High-flagged for its Saiva ஞானமார்க்கம் collision, see 08_core_glossary.md). ஆபோகிரிபோஸ் “hidden” (அப்போக்ருபோஸ்/மறைவாய்) must not be read via the Tamil esoteric-secret-doctrine grammar rejected under முஸ்தேரியன் (mystery) above — here the treasures are hidden IN CHRIST specifically (locatable, found by coming to him), not hidden FROM ordinary believers behind ritual initiation.
πιθανολογίᾳpithanologiaplausible/persuasive argument (designed to delude, παραλογίζηται)Medium. நம்பவைக்கும் பேச்சு/தர்க்கவாதம் (persuasive talk/argumentation). Low doctrinal ambiguity in itself; its force depends on context (2:8’s φιλοσοφία).
τὴν τάξιν καὶ τὸ στερέωμα τῆς…πίστεωςtēn taxin kai to stereōma tēs… pisteōsthe order and firmness of your faithLow. ஒழுங்கும் உறுதியும் (order and firmness); reuses established விசுவாசம்.

2:6-7 — Received Christ, walk in him

TermTransliterationContextual meaningTamil rendering risk
ὡς οὖν παρελάβετε τὸν Χριστὸν Ἰησοῦν τὸν κύριον, ἐν αὐτῷ περιπατεῖτεparelabete… peripateiteas you received Christ Jesus the Lord, walk in himLow. Reuses established கர்த்தர்; ஏற்றுக்கொண்டபடியே (having received), நடந்துகொள்ளுங்கள் (walk/conduct yourselves) are standard.
ἐρριζωμένοι καὶ ἐποικοδομούμενοι ἐν αὐτῷ καὶ βεβαιούμενοι τῇ πίστειerriz ōmenoi… epoikodomoumenoi… bebaioumenoirooted and being built up in him, and established/confirmed in the faithLow. வேரூன்றி (rooted, agricultural) and கட்டப்பட்டு (built up, architectural) — mixed metaphor renders naturally in Tamil devotional register (see idiom note in the core-passage section above). Reuses established விசுவாசம்.
περισσεύοντες ἐν εὐχαριστίᾳperisseuontes en eucharistiaoverflowing/abounding with thanksgivingLow. ஸ்தோத்திரத்தில் பெருகி (overflowing in thanksgiving) — established Romans-inherited ஸ்தோத்திரம் (thanksgiving), recurring as a structural refrain across the letter (1:3, 1:12, 2:7, 3:15, 3:17, 4:2).

2:8-15 — Warning against hollow philosophy; the fullness in Christ; union in his death and triumph

The φιλοσοφία / στοιχεῖα / θεότης / πλήρωμα term cluster (2:8-10) is already analyzed in full in 08_core_glossary.md and is not repeated here; the additional terms of 2:11-15 follow.

Must not be confused with, or used to validate, any physical ascetic body-discipline.
συνταφέντες αὐτῷ ἐν τῷ βαπτισμῷ, ἐν ᾧ καὶ συνηγέρθητεsyntaphentes… synēgerthēteburied with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with himHigh. உடன் அடக்கம்பண்ணப்பட்டு…உடன் எழுப்பப்பட்டீர்கள் (buried together with… raised together with). Reuses established ஞானஸ்நானம் (baptism) and உயிர்த்தெழுதல்-root vocabulary (resurrection). Must convey union WITH Christ’s own death and resurrection (accomplished, once, historical events applied to the believer through faith), not a repeatable purificatory rite nor a this-life “spiritual rebirth” cycle that could be assimilated to மறுபிறவி (reincarnation, Critical-forbidden throughout this pipeline).
νεκροὺς ὄντας…συνεζωοποίησεν ὑμᾶς σὺν αὐτῷ, χαρισάμενος ἡμῖν πάντα τὰ παραπτώματαnekrous ontas… synezōopoiēsen… charisamenos… paraptōmatabeing dead [in trespasses]… he made you alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespassesHigh. உயிரோடு எழுப்பினார் (made alive together); பாவமன்னிப்பு-root கிருபையாய் மன்னித்து (having graciously forgiven). Reuses established கிருபை (grace) and மன்னிப்பு (forgiveness); παράπτωμα (trespass) is a near-synonym of the established பாவம் (sin) and should be rendered மீறுதல்கள் (transgressions/trespasses) to preserve the distinct nuance (a specific falling-away act) without displacing பாவம் as the primary sin-term.
ἐξαλείψας τὸ καθ’ ἡμῶν χειρόγραφον τοῖς δόγμασιν…προσηλώσας αὐτὸ τῷ σταυρῷexaleipsas… cheirographon… prosēlōsas… staurōhaving blotted out/wiped away the record of debt against us with its decrees… nailing it to the crossHigh. கடன்பத்திரத்தை (record of debt, established, see 08_core_glossary.md) அழித்து (blotted out/erased) and சிலுவையில் ஆணியடித்து (nailed to the cross) — vivid, concrete imagery that should stay literal; do not soften to abstract “cancelled our sins” phrasing that loses the legal-document-destroyed picture.
ἀπεκδυσάμενος τὰς ἀρχὰς καὶ τὰς ἐξουσίας ἐδειγμάτισεν ἐν παρρησίᾳ, θριαμβεύσας αὐτοὺς ἐν αὐτῷapekdysamenos… archas… exousias… edeigmatisen… thriambeusashaving disarmed/stripped the rulers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it [the cross]Critical. துரைத்தனங்களையும் அதிகாரங்களையும் உரிந்துபோட்டு, வெளியரங்கமாய்க் காண்பித்து, சிலுவையிலே அவைகளின்மேல் ஜெயம்கொண்டார் (having stripped off the rulers and authorities, displaying them openly, [he] triumphed over them on the cross). Reuses the 1:16 established terms துரைத்தனங்கள்/அதிகாரங்கள். This is the letter’s decisive answer to any fear-based or appeasement-based relationship with Tamil intermediate spirit-powers (village guardian deities, planetary powers, malevolent spirits): the cross is a public military triumph (θριαμβεύω is a Roman-triumph term — a general parading defeated captives) over every such power, already accomplished, not an ongoing negotiation requiring ritual propitiation (பரிகாரம், already forbidden for reconciliation, is equally forbidden as a framing here). Flag for mandatory theologian review given the direct doctrinal collision with village/folk-Hindu ritual-protection practices this audience may have grown up with or still encounter in extended family contexts.

2:16-19 — Warning against legalistic judgment; holding fast to the Head

TermTransliterationContextual meaningTamil rendering risk
μὴ οὖν τις ὑμᾶς κρινέτω ἐν βρώσει καὶ ἐν πόσει ἢ ἐν μέρει ἑορτῆς ἢ νεομηνίας ἢ σαββάτωνmē… krinetō en brōsei kai en posei… heortēs… neomēnias… sabbatōnlet no one judge/condemn you in food or drink or regarding a festival, new moon, or sabbathMedium (established, see 08_core_glossary.md). தீர்ப்பு செய்யக்கூடாது (let no one judge/pass sentence). See existing festival/new-moon/sabbath entry for the அமாவாசை collision risk.
ἅ ἐστιν σκιὰ τῶν μελλόντων, τὸ δὲ σῶμα τοῦ Χριστοῦha estin skia… to de sōma tou Christouwhich are a shadow of things to come, but the substance/reality belongs to ChristHigh. நிழல்…உடல்/சாரம் (shadow… substance/body-reality). The shadow-versus-substance contrast is philosophically resonant in a culture with its own developed maya/appearance-versus-reality vocabulary (Advaita Vedanta’s māyā, “the world as illusion/appearance”); translators must not let σκιά be read through a māyā lens (implying the physical world itself is illusory) — the “shadow” here is specifically the old covenant’s ritual calendar prefiguring Christ, not a metaphysical claim about reality’s ultimate unreality.
καταβραβευέτω…ἐθέλων ἐν ταπεινοφροσύνῃ καὶ θρησκείᾳ τῶν ἀγγέλων, ἃ ἑόρακεν ἐμβατεύωνkatabrabeuetō… thrēskeia tōn angelōn… ha heoraken embateuōnlet no one disqualify you, insisting on false humility and worship of angels, going into detail about visions he has seenHigh (established, see 08_core_glossary.md — worship of angels entry). ஏமாற்றி தகுதி குலைக்கவிடாதீர்கள் (do not let [anyone] disqualify/defraud you); தரிசனங்கள் (visions) — a term with strong resonance in Tamil devotional and folk-religious experience (deities appearing in dreams/visions, தரிசனம் also meaning the ordinary act of viewing/being-seen-by a temple deity’s image); the warning is against elevating private visionary experience above the apostolic gospel and Christ the Head, not against visions as such — keep this distinction clear in any teaching notes accompanying the translation.
εἰκῇ φυσιούμενος ὑπὸ τοῦ νοὸς τῆς σαρκὸς αὐτοῦ, καὶ οὐ κρατῶν τὴν κεφαλήν, ἐξ οὗ πᾶν τὸ σῶμα…αὔξει τὴν αὔξησιν τοῦ θεοῦeikē physioumenos… nous tēs sarkos… kratōn tēn kephalēn… auxēsin tou theouvainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, and not holding fast to the Head, from whom the whole body… grows with a growth from GodHigh. வீணாய் இறுமாப்படைந்து (vainly/emptily puffed up with pride); தலையைப் பற்றிக்கொள்ளாமல் (not holding fast to the Head) — reuses established தலை (head, see core-passage entry #8); the “growth from God” (தேவனிடத்திலிருந்து வளர்ச்சி) must be kept as organic, Christ-sourced growth, distinct from self-attained spiritual advancement through esoteric practice.

2:20-23 — Died to the elemental principles; the futility of self-made religion

TermTransliterationContextual meaningTamil rendering risk
εἰ ἀπεθάνετε σὺν Χριστῷ ἀπὸ τῶν στοιχείων τοῦ κόσμου, τί…δογματίζεσθεapethanete syn Christō apo tōn stoicheiōn… dogmatizestheif you died with Christ to the elemental principles of the world, why…do you submit to regulationsHigh (established, see 08_core_glossary.md). கிறிஸ்துவுடனேகூட மரித்தீர்களானால்…ஏன் கட்டளைகளுக்கு உட்படுகிறீர்கள் (if you died together with Christ… why do you submit to commandments). Reuses established உலகத்தின் ஆரம்ப நியமங்கள் (elemental principles) and மனுஷ கட்டளைகள் (human regulations); dying WITH Christ (a completed, once event) is the ground for freedom from these, not an ongoing achievement.
ταπεινοφροσύνῃ καὶ ἀφειδίᾳ σώματος, οὐκ ἐν τιμῇ τινι πρὸς πλησμονὴν τῆς σαρκόςtapeinophrosynē… apheidia sōmatos… plēsmonēn tēs sarkos[an appearance of wisdom] in self-made religion, false humility, and severity to the body — of no value against the indulgence of the fleshHigh (established, see 08_core_glossary.md — asceticism entry). சரீர ஒடுக்கம் (severity to the body); “of no value” (ஒரு பெறுமானமும் இல்லை) is the letter’s own decisive verdict on ascetic self-discipline as a strategy against sin — the point translators must let land clearly, without appearing to attack Tamil ascetic traditions (தவம், விரதம், துறவறம்) as named institutions (see the existing glossary entry’s guidance).

Chapter 2 summary: every verse of chapter 2 has now been analyzed, spanning the pastoral opening (2:1-5), the positive Christ-centered core (2:6-15), and the twin warnings against legalism and asceticism (2:16-23). No sub-section is without treatment.

Chapter 3 (3:1-25)

Chapter 3 moves from the theological ground (union with the risen Christ, 3:1-4) through ethical instruction (vice list, new-self/old-self, virtue list, the peace/word/thanksgiving triad, 3:5-17) to the household code (3:18-25, continuing into 4:1).

3:1-4 — Raised with Christ; the hidden life

TermTransliterationContextual meaningTamil rendering risk
εἰ οὖν συνηγέρθητε τῷ Χριστῷ, τὰ ἄνω ζητεῖτε…τὰ ἄνω φρονεῖτεsynēgerthēte… ta anō zēteite… phroneiteif then you were raised with Christ, seek/set your mind on the things aboveMedium. உடன் எழுப்பப்பட்டீர்களானால்…மேலானவைகளை நாடுங்கள் (having been raised together… seek the things above). Reuses 2:12’s established resurrection-union vocabulary. “Things above” (மேலானவைகள்) must convey heavenly/Christ-centered priority, not a Vedantic higher-plane-of-consciousness framing (உயர்ந்த நிலை, associated with meditative ascent through cosmic levels in some Hindu schools) — the “above” is defined concretely as “where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God,” a specific enthroned Person, not an abstract higher state.
ἀπεθάνετε γάρ, καὶ ἡ ζωὴ ὑμῶν κέκρυπται σὺν τῷ Χριστῷ ἐν τῷ θεῷapethanete… hē zōē hymōn kekryptai syn tō Christō en tō theōfor you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in GodMedium. வாழ்வு…மறைந்திருக்கிறது (life is hidden). “Hidden” here is protective/secure concealment (a life secured in God, safe from ultimate harm), not esoteric-secret vocabulary (இரகசியம், already carefully handled at 1:26); keep the two Greek roots (κρύπτω here vs. μυστήριον there) distinguishable in Tamil so a reader does not conflate “your hidden life” with “the revealed mystery.”
ὅταν ὁ Χριστὸς φανερωθῇ, ἡ ζωὴ ὑμῶν, τότε καὶ ὑμεῖς σὺν αὐτῷ φανερωθήσεσθε ἐν δόξῃphanerōthē… phanerōthēsesthe en doxēwhen Christ, who is your life, appears/is revealed, then you also will appear with him in gloryMedium (established root, see 08_core_glossary.md — παρουσία entry). கிறிஸ்து வெளிப்படும்போது…மகிமையிலே வெளிப்படுவீர்கள் (when Christ appears… you will appear in glory). Reuses established கிறிஸ்து வெளிப்படும்போது and மகிமை (glory); this is Colossians’ primary eschatological/hope-of-glory statement outside 1:27, and the same Tamil vocabulary should link the two passages for the reader.

3:5-11 — Vice list; put off the old self, put on the new

TermTransliterationContextual meaningTamil rendering risk
πορνείαν, ἀκαθαρσίαν, πάθος, ἐπιθυμίαν κακήν, καὶ τὴν πλεονεξίαν, ἥτις ἐστὶν εἰδωλολατρίαporneian… pleonexian… eidōlolatriasexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatryCritical. விபசாரம், அசுத்தம், மோகம், பொல்லாத இச்சை, பொருளாசை (which is idol வழிபாடு) — Paul’s own equation of covetousness with idolatry (எலலோலட்ரியா) is doctrinally load-bearing and must be kept explicit, not softened to a loose comparison (“covetousness is LIKE idolatry”); it is a direct identity claim. Reuses established வழிபாடு-root vocabulary already handled for angel-worship (2:18); the identical verb should surface here so the reader connects covetousness with the same category of misdirected worship.
ὀργὴν θεοῦ…θυμόν, ὀργήν, κακίαν, βλασφημίαν, αἰσχρολογίανorgēn theou… thymon… blasphēmian… aischrologianthe wrath of God [is coming]… anger, wrath, malice, slander, filthy/abusive talkHigh. தேவனுடைய கோபம் (God’s wrath/anger) — must be kept as personal, moral, judicial wrath (a holy God’s response to sin), never rendered with terms suggesting an impersonal cosmic retribution mechanism (like கர்ம விளைவு, karmic consequence) that operates automatically apart from God’s own judicial character. கோபம், மூர்க்கம், துர்பாஷை (anger, malice, abusive speech) are established, low-ambiguity ethical vocabulary otherwise.
μὴ ψεύδεσθε εἰς ἀλλήλους, ἀπεκδυσάμενοι τὸν παλαιὸν ἄνθρωπον…καὶ ἐνδυσάμενοι τὸν νέονmē pseudesthe… apekdysamenoi ton palaion anthrōpon… endysamenoi ton neondo not lie to one another, having put off the old self… and put on the newHigh (established, see 08_core_glossary.md — new self/old self entry). பொய் சொல்லாதிருங்கள்…பழைய மனுஷனை உரிந்துபோட்டு…புதிய மனுஷனை தரித்துக்கொண்டு. The clothing metaphor (களைந்துவிடுதல் / தரித்துக்கொள்ளுதல்) must be kept concrete per the existing entry’s guidance; this is the fullest exposition of the term in the letter.
τὸν ἀνακαινούμενον εἰς ἐπίγνωσιν κατ᾽ εἰκόνα τοῦ κτίσαντος αὐτόνanakainoumenon eis epignōsin kat’ eikona tou ktisantosbeing renewed in knowledge after the image of its creatorCritical. புதுப்பிக்கப்பட்டு…தன்னைப் படைத்தவருடைய தற்சுரூபத்தின்படி (being renewed… after the image of the one who created it). This clause MUST reuse the exact Tamil term தற்சுரூபம் established for εἰκών at 1:15, so the reader hears the direct echo: the new self is renewed after the very image Christ himself IS. If a different word for “image” is used here, the letter’s most important intertextual link (1:15 to 3:10) is severed in translation. Flag for mandatory theologian review to confirm term consistency across 1:15 and 3:10.
ὅπου οὐκ ἔνι Ἕλλην καὶ Ἰουδαῖος, περιτομὴ καὶ ἀκροβυστία, βάρβαρος, Σκύθης, δοῦλος, ἐλεύθερος, ἀλλὰ τὰ πάντα καὶ ἐν πᾶσιν ΧριστόςHellēn kai Ioudaios… barbaros, Skythēs, doulos, eleutheros… ta panta kai en pasin Christoswhere there is no Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free, but Christ is all and in allCritical. This universal-unity claim is the New Testament’s most direct parallel to the Romans package’s Universal Scope of the Gospel / Unity of Jews and Gentiles doctrines, and given this pipeline’s established sensitivity to Tamil Nadu’s twentieth-century Dravidian and Self-Respect anti-caste movements, this verse carries the same weight: identity in Christ transcends every inherited social category, explicitly including slave/free — a distinction with obvious resonance alongside caste hierarchy in the Tamil social context. Retain the full list unqualified and unsoftened; do not add or substitute a Tamil-specific category (e.g. naming caste terms directly) into the translated text itself, but flag this verse for native-speaker and theologian double review given its high teaching potential and high sensitivity.

3:12-17 — The virtue list; the peace and word of Christ; thankfulness

TermTransliterationContextual meaningTamil rendering risk

ἀνεχόμενοι ἀλλήλων καὶ χαριζόμενοι ἑαυτοῖς…καθὼς καὶ ὁ κύριος ἐχαρίσατο ὑμῖνanechomenoi… charizomenoi… ho kyrios echarisatobearing with one another and forgiving each other… as the Lord forgave youLow. பொறுத்துக்கொண்டு, மன்னித்துக்கொண்டு (bearing with, forgiving) — reuses established மன்னிப்பு (forgiveness); the pattern (forgive as the Lord forgave you) grounds horizontal forgiveness in the vertical forgiveness already secured (cf. 1:14, 2:13).
ἐπὶ πᾶσιν δὲ τούτοις τὴν ἀγάπην, ὅ ἐστιν σύνδεσμος τῆς τελειότητοςepi pasin… tēn agapēn… syndesmos tēs teleiotētosabove/over all these, love, which is the bond of perfection/completenessMedium. அன்பையும் தரித்துக்கொள்ளுங்கள், அது பூரணத்தன்மையின் கட்டு (love, which is the bond of perfection). τελειότης here (unlike τέλειος at 1:28) shares the πλήρ-/πூரண root family loosely; render as முழுமையின் கட்டு or பூரணத்தன்மையின் கட்டு (the bond that binds every virtue into a complete, unified whole) rather than importing pantheistic-completeness overtones — context (a list of virtues bound together by love) controls the sense clearly.
ἡ εἰρήνη τοῦ Χριστοῦ βραβευέτω ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν…καὶ εὐχάριστοι γίνεσθεeirēnē tou Christou brabeuetō… eucharistoi ginesthelet the peace of Christ rule/act as umpire in your hearts… and be thankfulMedium. கிறிஸ்துவின் சமாதானம்…உங்கள் இருதயங்களில் ஆளட்டும் (let the peace of Christ rule/reign) — reuses established சமாதானம் (peace, Romans-inherited). βραβεύω is literally “act as umpire/arbiter,” a vivid image (peace settling disputed calls in the heart) worth preserving where natural in Tamil, though ஆளட்டும் (“let it rule/govern”) is an acceptable established simplification. ஸ்தோத்திரமுள்ளவர்களாயும் இருங்கள் (be thankful) reuses established ஸ்தோத்திரம்.
ὁ λόγος τοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐνοικείτω ἐν ὑμῖν πλουσίως…ψαλμοῖς, ὕμνοις, ᾠδαῖς πνευματικαῖςho logos tou Christou enoikeitō… psalmois, hymnois, ōdais pneumatikaislet the word of Christ dwell in you richly… with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songsMedium. கிறிஸ்துவின் வசனம் உங்களில் பரிபூரணமாய் வாசமாயிருக்கக்கடவது (let the word of Christ dwell in you richly/fully) — ἐνοικέω shares the κατοικέω root family used for the fullness dwelling in Christ (1:19, 2:9); the echo (the word now dwells richly in believers, just as fullness dwells in Christ) is intentional and worth preserving with the வாசமாயிருத்தல் root consistently. சங்கீதங்கள், கீர்த்தனைகள், ஆவிக்குரிய பாடல்கள் (psalms, hymns, spiritual songs) are established Tamil Christian worship vocabulary with a long hymnody tradition (Tamil Christian lyric-hymn, கீர்த்தனை, composition dates back centuries); low ambiguity.
πᾶν ὅ τι ἐὰν ποιῆτε ἐν λόγῳ ἢ ἐν ἔργῳ, πάντα ἐν ὀνόματι κυρίου Ἰησοῦ, εὐχαριστοῦντες τῷ θεῷ πατρὶ δι᾽ αὐτοῦpan… en onomati kyriou Iēsou, eucharistountes tō theō patri di’ autouwhatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through himLow. கர்த்தராகிய இயேசுவின் நாமத்தினாலே (in the name of the Lord Jesus) — reuses established கர்த்தர்/இயேசு/பிதா; the “in the name of” formula (a common Tamil Christian idiom of doing all things under Christ’s authority and for his honor) is well-established and low-ambiguity, closing the ethical section with the same thanksgiving refrain (ஸ்தோத்திரம்) that opens (1:3, 1:12) and recurs throughout the letter.

3:18-4:1 — The household code

TermTransliterationContextual meaningTamil rendering risk
αἱ γυναῖκες, ὑποτάσσεσθε τοῖς ἀνδράσιν, ὡς ἀνῆκεν ἐν κυρίῳhai gynaikes, hypotassesthe… hōs anēken en kyriōwives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the LordHigh. மனைவிகளே, கர்த்தருக்குள் தகுதியானபடி உங்கள் புருஷருக்குக் கீழ்ப்படியுங்கள். The qualifying phrase ἐν κυρίῳ (“in the Lord,” கர்த்தருக்குள்) is the doctrinally load-bearing element and must never be dropped: it places the entire household code under Christ’s lordship and the letter’s own established sense of “fitting” conduct (ἀνῆκεν), not an unqualified patriarchal absolute nor any Tamil customary-law framing of wifely duty (இல்லற தர்மம் — the Hindu householder-duty category, தர்மம் already Critical-forbidden throughout this pipeline for “righteousness/duty”).
οἱ ἄνδρες, ἀγαπᾶτε τὰς γυναῖκας καὶ μὴ πικραίνεσθε πρὸς αὐτάςhoi andres, agapate… mē pikrainesthehusbands, love your wives and do not be embittered/harsh against themMedium. புருஷர்களே, உங்கள் மனைவிகளிடத்தில் அன்பாயிருங்கள்; அவர்களிடத்தில் கசப்பாயிராதிருங்கள். Reuses established அன்பு (love, ἀγάπη-root); the reciprocal, mutually-qualifying structure of the whole code (each party’s duty conditioned by the other’s, and both by “in the Lord”) must be preserved — Phase 2 must not render the wives’ clause in isolation as if it were the code’s only or primary content.
τὰ τέκνα, ὑπακούετε τοῖς γονεῦσιν κατὰ πάντα, τοῦτο γὰρ εὐάρεστόν ἐστιν ἐν κυρίῳta tekna, hypakouete… euareston… en kyriōchildren, obey your parents in everything, for this is pleasing/well-pleasing in the LordLow. பிள்ளைகளே, எல்லாவற்றிலேயும் பெற்றோருக்குக் கீழ்ப்படியுங்கள்; இது கர்த்தருக்குப் பிரியமாயிருக்கிறது. Reuses established கர்த்தர்; low ambiguity, consonant with strong Tamil family-honor values around filial obedience — the “in the Lord” qualifier still applies and should not be dropped.
οἱ πατέρες, μὴ ἐρεθίζετε τὰ τέκνα ὑμῶν, ἵνα μὴ ἀθυμῶσινhoi pateres, mē erethizete… athymōsinfathers, do not provoke/exasperate your children, so that they do not become discouragedLow. பிதாக்களே, உங்கள் பிள்ளைகளுக்குச் சினமூட்டாதிருங்கள்; அவர்கள் சோர்ந்துபோகாதபடிக்கு. Standard ethical vocabulary; low ambiguity.
οἱ δοῦλοι, ὑπακούετε κατὰ πάντα τοῖς κατὰ σάρκα κυρίοις…ὡς τῷ κυρίῳ…τῷ γὰρ κυρίῳ Χριστῷ δουλεύετεhoi douloi, hypakouete… tois kata sarka kyriois… hōs tō kyriō… tō kyriō Christō douleueteslaves, obey your earthly masters in everything… as to the Lord… you serve the Lord ChristHigh. Given the Romans-package precedent of flagging apostle/guru overlap and caste-adjacent vocabulary, translators and reviewers must handle the earthly master term (எஜமான், already noted as insufficient for Christ’s Lordship in the Romans TM entry for “lord”) carefully in this reversed direction — here எஜமான் legitimately denotes a human household master, distinct from கர்த்தர் reserved for Christ. The theologically decisive move is Paul’s redirection of the slave’s ultimate service and reward to Christ himself (3:24, “you serve the Lord Christ”), which relativizes but does not by itself abolish the social institution addressed; this passage requires careful teaching-note framing (see 11_doctrine_analysis.md) given its historical use to justify chattel slavery and its live resonance with unresolved caste-labor dynamics in the Tamil Nadu context — flag for mandatory theologian review.
ἀνταπόδοσιν τῆς κληρονομίας…ὁ γὰρ ἀδικῶν κομίσεται ὃ ἠδίκησεν, καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν προσωπολημψίαantapodosin tēs klēronomias… adikōn komisetai… prosōpolēmpsiathe reward of the inheritance… the wrongdoer will be repaid for the wrong he has done, and there is no partialityMedium. சுதந்தரத்தின் பலனை (the reward of the inheritance) reuses established சுதந்தரம் (inheritance, see 08_core_glossary.md); முகதாட்சிணியம் இல்லை (there is no partiality/favoritism) is an important universal-justice statement (God’s impartial judgment applies to master and slave alike, 4:1) — do not soften.
οἱ κύριοι, τὸ δίκαιον καὶ τὴν ἰσότητα τοῖς δούλοις παρέχεσθε, εἰδότες ὅτι καὶ ὑμεῖς ἔχετε κύριον ἐν οὐρανῷhoi kyrioi, to dikaion kai tēn isotēta… echete kyrion en ouranōmasters, grant/provide your slaves what is just and fair, knowing that you also have a Master in heavenHigh. எஜமான்களே, நியாயமும் சமமும் அடிமைகளுக்குச் செய்யுங்கள்; உங்களுக்கும் பரலோகத்திலே எஜமான் இருக்கிறார் என்று அறிந்திருங்கள். நியாயம் reuses established நீதி-root vocabulary (justice/righteousness) but must not drift into தர்மம் (Critical-forbidden). The mutual accountability structure (masters answer to a heavenly Master) is the passage’s real ethical weight and should not be lost; see the doctrine analysis for full treatment of how this code functions in the Tamil social and historical context.

Chapter 3 summary: every verse of chapter 3 is now analyzed, spanning the theological ground of union with Christ (3:1-4), the ethical put-off/put-on structure with its universal-unity climax (3:5-11), the virtue list and worship-life triad (3:12-17), and the household code (3:18-25, continuing into 4:1). No sub-section is without treatment.

Chapter 4 (4:1-18)

Chapter 4 opens with the household code’s final clause (4:1, already treated above with 3:18-25 as a single unit) and then moves to instructions on prayer and outsider-facing conduct (4:2-6), followed by personal greetings and closing (4:7-18).

4:2-6 — Prayer, the mystery of Christ, wisdom toward outsiders

TermTransliterationContextual meaningTamil rendering risk
τῇ προσευχῇ προσκαρτερεῖτε, γρηγοροῦντες ἐν αὐτῇ ἐν εὐχαριστίᾳtē proseuchē proskartereite, grēgorountes… eucharistiadevote yourselves to prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgivingLow. ஜெபத்தில் உறுதியாய் நிலைத்திருங்கள்; அதிலே விழித்திருந்து ஸ்தோத்திரஞ்செலுத்துங்கள். Reuses established ஸ்தோத்திரம் (thanksgiving); ஜெபம் (prayer) is standard, low-ambiguity Tamil Christian vocabulary, distinct from Hindu ritual பூஜை (see the Prayer and Intercession doctrine entry inherited conceptually from the Romans package).
ἵνα ὁ θεὸς ἀνοίξῃ ἡμῖν θύραν τοῦ λόγου, λαλῆσαι τὸ μυστήριον τοῦ Χριστοῦthyran tou logou… to mystērion tou Christouthat God may open to us a door for the word, to speak the mystery of ChristHigh (established root, see 08_core_glossary.md — mystery entry). வசனத்திற்கான வாசலைத் திறக்கும்படி…கிறிஸ்துவின் இரகசியத்தைப் பேசும்படி. Reuses established இரகசியம் (mystery) at its final occurrence in the letter (cf. 1:26-27, 2:2); consistent rendering across all three occurrences is required.
ἐν σοφίᾳ περιπατεῖτε πρὸς τοὺς ἔξω, τὸν καιρὸν ἐξαγοραζόμενοιen sophia peripateite pros tous exō, ton kairon exagorazomenoiwalk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the most of/redeeming the timeMedium. வெளியாருக்கு முன்பாக ஞானமாய் நடந்துகொள்ளுங்கள்; காலத்தைப் பிரயோஜனப்படுத்திக்கொள்ளுங்கள். Reuses established ஞானம் (wisdom); “outsiders” (வெளியார்) refers to non-believers generally and should not be rendered with any term implying caste-outsider status (வெளியார் in ordinary Tamil usage is religiously neutral, but translators should be alert that “insider/outsider” language in a caste-conscious culture carries extra sensitivity — see 02_cultural_context.md).
ὁ λόγος ὑμῶν πάντοτε ἐν χάριτι, ἅλατι ἠρτυμένοςho logos hymōn… en chariti, halati ērtymenoslet your speech always be gracious, seasoned with saltLow. உங்கள் பேச்சு எப்பொழுதும் கிருபை நிறைந்ததாயும் உப்பால் சுவைபடுத்தப்பட்டதாயும் இருக்கக்கடவது. Reuses established கிருபை (grace); the salt-metaphor (speech that preserves and enhances, per ordinary Tamil culinary idiom of உப்பு சுவை) transfers naturally with no adjustment needed.

4:7-18 — Personal greetings, co-workers, and closing

This section is proper-name-dense rather than term-dense; doctrinal risk is minimal, but consistency of proper-name transliteration matters for Phase 2 (all names below are new to this Language Package and must be added to translation memory so later Colossians-adjacent lessons or cross-references use the same forms).

Name/phraseTransliterationTamil renderingNotes
ΤυχικόςTychikosதுகிக்குEstablished Tamil Bible proper-name form (cf. Ephesians 6:21, 2 Timothy 4:12).
ὈνήσιμοςOnēsimosஒநேசிமுEstablished form (cf. Philemon); note for teaching purposes the connection to Philemon, though out of scope for this package’s core passages.
ἈρίσταρχοςAristarchosஅரிஸ்தர்குEstablished form.
ΜᾶρκοςMarkosமாற்குEstablished form (the evangelist traditionally identified with the Gospel of Mark).
Ἰοῦστος (Ἰησοῦς ὁ λεγόμενος Ἰοῦστος)Ioustosயுஸ்துEstablished form; note this Jesus/Justus is distinguished by his added name from Jesus/Yesu, the Lord — no risk of confusion in Tamil since இயேசு is reserved exclusively for Christ per the Romans package’s established convention.
ἘπαφρᾶςEpaphrasஎப்பாப்பிராEstablished form; recurs from 1:7.
Λουκᾶς ὁ ἰατρὸς ὁ ἀγαπητόςLoukas ho iatros ho agapētosபிரியமான வைத்தியனாகிய லூக்காEstablished form; “the beloved physician” (பிரியமான வைத்தியன்) is a fixed Tamil Bible descriptive phrase.
ΔημᾶςDēmasதேமாEstablished form; note (for teaching context, not the text itself) his later departure in 2 Timothy 4:10 gives this name a cautionary resonance in Christian teaching tradition.
Νύμφα(ν)…τὴν κατ᾽ οἶκον αὐτῆς ἐκκλησίανNymphan… kat’ oikon ekklēsianநிம்பாள்…அவளுடைய வீட்டில் கூடும் சபைThe house-church meeting in Nympha’s home (a woman named as a host of a congregation) reuses established சபை (church, Romans-inherited); no additional doctrinal risk.

Romans package’s mission entry சுவிசேஷ ஊழியம்); low ambiguity, a direct pastoral charge.
The closing autograph, request to remember Paul’s imprisonment, and grace-benediction all reuse established கிருபை; low ambiguity, standard epistolary closing form consistent with the Romans package’s closing conventions.

Chapter 4 summary: every verse of chapter 4 is now analyzed. The household code’s final clause (4:1) is treated together with 3:18-25 above as a single ethical unit; 4:2-6 and 4:7-18 complete the chapter. No portion of chapter 4 is without treatment.

Ambiguities requiring a recorded decision

PassageAmbiguityDecision for this package
1:15 πάσης κτίσεωςPartitive (“first of creation”) vs subordination (“firstborn over creation”)Subordination — grounded by 1:16’s ὅτι; Tamil must carry “over/above all creation” force
1:18 ἀρχή”Beginning” vs “ruler""Beginning” (ஆதி) — paired with “firstborn from the dead,” inaugurating new creation
1:20 τὰ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς… ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖςScope of cosmic reconciliationPacification/subjection of all things, not universalism; do not add or subtract from the text’s own scope
1:23 ἐν πάσῃ κτίσει”To every creature” hyperboleKeep the universal proclamation language unqualified, as with all universality claims in this pipeline
1:24 ἀνταναπληρῶ τὰ ὑστερήματα τῶν θλίψεων τοῦ ΧριστοῦDoes this imply Christ’s atonement was insufficient? No — “afflictions” here is the church’s shared missionary suffering, not the atoning cross-work; render with “my portion/share” framing (see chapter 1 analysis above)
2:8 στοιχεῖα”Elementary principles” vs “elemental spirits”Render as principles (ஆரம்ப நியமங்கள்); never பஞ்சபூதங்கள் (see glossary)
2:17 σκιάShadow as prefiguration vs. shadow as unreality/illusion (māyā-adjacent)Prefiguration of the old covenant calendar, fulfilled in Christ’s “substance” — not a claim that the physical world is illusory
2:18 θρησκείᾳ τῶν ἀγγέλωνWorship offered to angels vs angelic worship joinedWorship offered to angels — the error is venerating intermediaries
3:11 τὰ πάντα καὶ ἐν πᾶσιν ΧριστόςScope of the listed categories (slave/free etc.)Full, unsoftened list — every named social distinction is transcended in Christ; do not add or substitute Tamil-specific categories into the translated text
3:18-4:1 the household codeTimeless universal ethic vs first-century social accommodationRender literally and let 04_comparative_theology.md and 11_doctrine_analysis.md carry the interpretive/teaching guidance; the text itself is not edited or softened

Idiomatic and covenantal language

  • “Blood of his cross” (1:20): keep literal (சிலுவையின் இரத்தம்); it is covenant-sacrifice language fulfilled, not metaphor.
  • “Present you holy” (1:22): παραστῆσαι is sacrificial presentation vocabulary (cf. Romans 12:1); Tamil நிறுத்த (“to set/present before”) keeps the courtroom-and-altar duality.
  • “Rooted and built up” (2:7): mixed agricultural/architectural metaphor; translate both images plainly — Tamil readers handle mixed metaphor in devotional register well.
  • “Head” and “body” (1:18, 2:19, 3:18): organic union language, foundational for the New Self and Church-as-Body doctrines; keep anatomical, not institutional, and keep Christ’s cosmic headship visibly prior to and qualifying any domestic headship application.
  • “Put off / put on” (2:11, 3:8-10, 3:12): consistent clothing metaphor across the letter’s ethical section; keep the verbs concrete (களைதல் / தரித்துக்கொள்ளுதல்) at every occurrence.
  • “Nailed to the cross” (2:14) and “triumphing over them” (2:15): vivid legal-document-destruction and Roman-military-triumph imagery; keep concrete, do not abstract into generic “Christ dealt with our sin/enemies” paraphrase.
  • “Seasoned with salt” (4:6): ordinary Tamil culinary idiom (உப்பு சுவை); transfers with no adjustment.
