Purpose and coverage statement
Philippians 2:5-11 is the doctrinal center of this curriculum and receives verse-by-verse treatment below. Per the PRD’s full-book coverage mandate, this document also analyzes every other passage in all four chapters of Philippians, chapter by chapter, first to last — the core passage is the theological anchor, not the scope boundary. Coverage confirmation:
| Chapter | New load-bearing terms found | Section |

No chapter or section of Philippians introduces zero new theological vocabulary; the letter is dense throughout. Every term identified below is seeded into 08_core_glossary.md and translation_memory.json.
The original text of Philippians is Koine Greek. No Hebrew or Aramaic source text applies to this letter directly, though several passages quote or echo the Greek Old Testament (Septuagint) — most importantly Isaiah 45:23 in 2:10-11 (Hebrew: לִי תִּכְרַע כָּל־בֶּרֶךְ, “to me every knee shall bow”), where Paul applies to Jesus an oath Yahweh swears about himself.
§1. Chapter 1 (Philippians 1:1-30)
1:1-2 — Salutation
| Terms | Variants | Analysis |
|---|---|---|
| δοῦλοι Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ douloi Christou Iēsou | slaves/bond-servants of Christ Jesus | Paul and Timothy’s self-designation. δοῦλος recurs as the decisive Christological term in 2:7 (μορφὴ δούλου) — Paul deliberately applies to himself the same low-status word the hymn applies to Christ. |
| ἐπίσκοποι καὶ διάκονοι episkopoi kai diakonoi | overseers and deacons/servants | The only NT letter-opening to name church officers in the address itself — Philippi’s congregational structure is already established. |
Tamil rendering: கிறிஸ்து இயேசுவின் ஊழியக்காரர் (established); கண்காணிகள் (overseers) and உதவிக்காரர்கள் (deacons), the established O.V. pair (Medium risk — never குரு, inherited rule, and never அடியார், the Shaiva devotee-servant title, for the self-designation). Grace and peace (1:2) use inherited கிருபை/சமாதானம்.
1:3-8 — Thanksgiving and partnership
| Terms | Variants | Analysis |
|---|---|---|
| κοινωνία εἰς τὸ εὐαγγέλιον koinōnia eis to euangelion | partnership/fellowship in(to) the gospel | Not passive membership but active shared investment (financial, prayer, suffering) in the gospel’s advance, “from the first day until now” (1:5). |
| ἐπιχορηγία / χορηγέω-family (implicit) — | — | (See 1:19 below for the explicit noun.) |
| πεποιθὼς αὐτὸ τοῦτο, ὅτι ὁ ἐναρξάμενος … ἐπιτελέσει pepoithōs — enarxamenos — epitelesei | confident that he who began … will complete | The letter’s opening assurance: God who started a good work will finish it “until the day of Christ Jesus.” Confidence located in God’s faithfulness, not human follow-through. |
| σπλάγχνα Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ splanchna Christou Iēsou | inward parts, bowels — deep affection | Paul’s yearning for the Philippians “with the affection of Christ Jesus” (1:8) — visceral, not merely sentimental, love. |
Tamil rendering risk:
- Partnership in the gospel (Low-Medium): ஐக்கியம் (inherited fellowship term) plus சுவிசேஷத்தில் பங்கு (share/partnership in the gospel) conveys active co-investment; must not flatten to mere social membership.
- God completes what he begins (High): நற்செயலைத் தொடங்கியவர் அதை நிறைவேற்றுவார் — this is a providence-class claim (inherited rule: never ஊழ்/fate). Critical pastoral function: assurance rests on God’s faithfulness, not the believer’s accumulating effort across time — the opposite of the multi-lifetime uncertainty assumed by Hindu and Jain frameworks of gradual liberation.
- Affection/σπλάγχνα (Medium): வாஞ்சை (yearning/deep affection) is the established O.V. rendering (also used in 1:8) and renders the letter’s emotional warmth well; no significant syncretism risk.
1:9-11 — Prayer for discernment
| Terms | Variants | Analysis |
|---|---|---|
| ἐπίγνωσις καὶ πᾶσα αἴσθησις epignōsis kai pasa aisthēsis | full knowledge and all discernment | Love that grows not blindly but with moral perception — the ability to “approve what is excellent” (δοκιμάζειν τὰ διαφέροντα). |
| εἰλικρινεῖς καὶ ἀπρόσκοποι eilikrineis kai aproskopoi | pure/sincere and blameless/without offense | Ethical goal “for the day of Christ” — moral transparency and giving no cause for others to stumble. |
| καρπὸν δικαιοσύνης karpon dikaiosynēs | fruit of righteousness | Righteousness (inherited நீதி) that is not merely declared but produces visible ethical fruit “through Jesus Christ.” |
Tamil rendering risk (Medium): அறிவும் பகுத்தறிதலும் (knowledge and discernment) — a natural pairing in Tamil moral vocabulary; low ambiguity. Fruit of righteousness (High): நீதியின் கனி — must be read as the fruit that flows FROM the inherited நீதி (received righteousness), not a separate merit-generating righteousness; keep grammatically dependent on “through Jesus Christ” (இயேசு கிறிஸ்துவின் மூலமாய்).
1:12-18 — The gospel advances through adversity
| Terms | Variants | Analysis |
|---|---|---|
| προκοπὴν τοῦ εὐαγγελίου prokopēn tou euangeliou | advance/progress of the gospel | Paul reframes his imprisonment as strategic gospel advance, not setback. |
| πραιτώριον praitōrion | praetorium (imperial guard headquarters) | Historical/geographic term; low doctrinal risk, transliterated. |
| διὰ φθόνον καὶ ἔριν … εἴτε προφάσει εἴτε ἀληθείᾳ dia phthonon kai erin … eite prophasei eite alētheia | from envy and rivalry … whether in pretense or in truth | Some preach Christ from impure motives (rivalry, selfish ambition); Paul rejoices anyway because Christ is proclaimed. |
Tamil rendering risk: Progress of the gospel (Medium): சுவிசேஷத்தின் முன்னேற்றம் — providence-adjacent; keep the sense of God’s sovereign use of adversity (inherited providence rule, never ஊழ்/fate). Envy and rivalry (Medium): பொறாமையினாலும் வாதத்தினாலும் — describes a real moral failure among preachers; must not be softened, but also must not eclipse Paul’s larger point that the message itself is not corrupted by an impure messenger. Praetorium (Low): அரண்மனைக் காவல் படை — transliteration/gloss, historical note only.
1:19-26 — To live is Christ
| Terms | Variants | Analysis |
|---|---|---|
| ἐπιχορηγία τοῦ πνεύματος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ epichorēgia tou pneumatos | the supply/support of the Spirit of Jesus Christ | Paul’s confidence of deliverance rests on the Spirit’s provision, not stoic self-reliance. |
| ἀποκαραδοκία καὶ ἐλπίς apokaradokia kai elpis | eager expectation and hope | Intense, straining anticipation (a rare compound also in Romans 8:19). |
| Ἐμοὶ γὰρ τὸ ζῆν Χριστὸς καὶ τὸ ἀποθανεῖν κέρδος Emoi gar to zēn Christos kai to apothanein kerdos | for me, to live is Christ and to die is gain | The letter’s most quoted personal confession: Christ himself, not an achievement or an escape, is Paul’s entire definition of both living and dying. |
| ἀναλῦσαι καὶ σὺν Χριστῷ εἶναι analysai kai syn Christō einai | to depart and be with Christ | Death as immediate, conscious presence with Christ — “far better” — not an intermediate impersonal state or a step in a longer cycle. |
Tamil rendering risk (High): “To live is Christ, to die is gain” (எனக்கு உயிரோடிருப்பது கிறிஸ்து, மரிப்பதோ ஆதாயம்): this sentence collapses if either clause is softened. “To die is gain” must not be heard as release from an unwanted body (a moksha/liberation-adjacent reading) — the gain is CHRIST HIMSELF, immediate conscious fellowship with him (அனாலிட்டு கிறிஸ்துவுடன் இருக்க, 1:23), not dissolution into an impersonal absolute. Supply of the Spirit (Medium): பரிசுத்த ஆவியானவரின் உதவி/ஆதரவு — personal, Trinitarian provision; not an impersonal life-force top-up.
1:27-30 — Citizenship-conduct and shared struggle
| Terms | Variants | Analysis |
|---|---|---|
| πολιτεύεσθε politeuesthe | conduct yourselves as citizens | Verb cognate of πολίτευμα (3:20, “citizenship”). “Conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ” — the citizenship theme is introduced here, in Philippi’s own Roman-colony civic vocabulary, before its noun form crystallizes in 3:20. |
| στήκετε ἐν ἑνὶ πνεύματι, μιᾷ ψυχῇ συναθλοῦντες stēkete en heni pneumati, mia psychē synathlountes | standing firm in one spirit, striving together with one soul | Athletic/military metaphor (συναθλέω, “contend together,” as in a team contest) for unified gospel labor under pressure. |
| ἐχαρίσθη τὸ ὑπὲρ Χριστοῦ … πάσχειν echaristhē to hyper Christou paschein | it has been granted (as a grace-gift) to suffer for Christ’s sake | The verb is from χαρίζομαι (a χάρις/grace word) — suffering for Christ is explicitly framed as a GIFT, not a burden or karmic debt. This is the letter’s first occurrence of the “joy in suffering” doctrine’s key grammatical marker. |
Tamil rendering risk: πολιτεύεσθε / conduct as citizens (High): குடிமக்களாக நடந்துகொள்ளுங்கள் (conduct yourselves as citizens) — establishes the citizenship-allegiance frame early; must read as consistent with 3:20’s குடியுரிமை (citizenship), not as an unrelated civic-duty exhortation. Standing firm, striving together (Medium): ஒரே ஆவியில் உறுதியாய் நின்று, ஒரே ஆத்துமாவுடன் சேர்ந்து போராடி — collectivist, team-struggle image; culturally congenial to Tamil collectivist instincts (see 02_cultural_context.md). Suffering granted as gift (Critical — first occurrence of the letter’s defining suffering doctrine): பாடுபடுவது கிருபையாக அளிக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறது — this grammatical marker (a χάρις-verb attached to suffering) must survive translation or the entire “joy in suffering” doctrine loses its scriptural anchor; NEVER framed as வினைப்பயன் (karmic fruit) or தலையெழுத்து (fate-writing).
§2. Chapter 2 (Philippians 2:1-30)
§2.A — 2:1-4: The ground of the hymn (unity through humility)
| Terms | Variants | Analysis |
|---|---|---|
| παράκλησις ἐν Χριστῷ paraklēsis en Christō | encouragement/exhortation in Christ | Opens a fourfold conditional appeal (“if there is…”) grounding the unity command in shared experience of Christ. |
| κοινωνία πνεύματος koinōnia pneumatos | fellowship/participation of the Spirit | Uses inherited ஐக்கியம்; shared life in the Holy Spirit as the basis for unity. |
| σπλάγχνα καὶ οἰκτιρμοί splanchna kai oiktirmoi | affection and compassion | Paired with 1:8’s affection term; the emotional ground of the appeal. |
| τὸ αὐτὸ φρονῆτε, σύμψυχοι, τὸ ἓν φρονοῦντες to auto phronēte, sympsychoi, to hen phronountes | thinking the same thing, united in soul, thinking one thing | Three-fold intensification of the φρονέω (mindset) thread that will climax in 2:5’s command to have the mind of Christ. |
| ἐριθεία ἢ κενοδοξία eritheia ē kenodoxia | selfish ambition or empty conceit | The two attitudes explicitly forbidden — factional self-promotion and hollow self-glory — the direct opposite of the hymn’s self-emptying pattern. |
| ἀλλήλους ἡγούμενοι ὑπερέχοντας ἑαυτῶν allēlous hēgoumenoi hyperechontas heautōn | considering one another as more significant than yourselves | The positive command that 2:5-11 will ground Christologically. |
Tamil rendering risk: Selfish ambition / empty conceit (High): சுயநலமும் வீண்பெருமையும் — must read as factional, status-seeking self-promotion, the ethical opposite of Christ’s self-emptying pattern that follows immediately; not merely “pride” in a generic sense. Consider others more significant (High): மற்றவர்களைத் தங்களிலும் மேன்மையானவர்களாக எண்ணுதல் — this is the ethical payload the hymn exists to ground; in a caste-stratified honor culture it must read as a chosen posture available to every believer regardless of social rank, modeled on the supreme Christ’s free choice, not as reinforcement of an already-assigned social hierarchy. Same mind / united in soul (Medium): ஒரே சிந்தையாயிருங்கள் — the φρονέω thread’s second occurrence (after 1:7); must render consistently with சிந்தை wherever the verb recurs (2:2 twice, 2:5, 3:15 twice, 3:19, 4:2, 4:10 twice).
§2.B — 2:5-11: The Christ hymn (verse-by-verse)
2:5 — τοῦτο φρονεῖτε ἐν ὑμῖν ὃ καὶ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ
| Terms | Variants | Analysis |
|---|---|---|
| φρονεῖτε phroneite | think, set the mind on, adopt an attitude/disposition | Present active imperative, second person plural. Not a single thought but a settled mindset or disposition. φρονέω is a signature Philippians word (1:7; 2:2 twice; 2:5; 3:15 twice; 3:19; 4:2; 4:10 twice — roughly 10 of its 26 NT uses). |
Tamil rendering: சிந்தை (sinthai, “mind/disposition”) is the established Tamil Bible rendering (“கிறிஸ்து இயேசுவில் இருந்த சிந்தையே உங்களிலும் இருக்கக்கடவது”). Risk is moderate: சிந்தை must read as a settled disposition to be imitated, not as a meditative mental state to be attained by technique. Avoid தியானம் (meditation) framings, which pull toward yogic practice vocabulary.
2:6a — ὃς ἐν μορφῇ θεοῦ ὑπάρχων
| Terms | Variants | Analysis |
|---|---|---|
| μορφή morphē | form, outward expression of inner nature, essential form | The decisive Christological term. In Greek usage μορφή is the form that truly expresses the being that underlies it — not mere external shape (σχῆμα) or likeness (ὁμοίωμα). “In the form of God” asserts that Christ possesses the nature of God. |
| ὑπάρχων hyparchōn | existing, being (continuous state) | Present participle: continuous existence. Christ did not begin to exist in God’s form; he existed so eternally. Stronger than a simple ὤν (“being”). |
Tamil rendering risk (Critical): the Tamil Old Version renders μορφή as ரூபம் (“தேவனுடைய ரூபமாயிருந்தும்”). ரூபம் is serviceable and established, but it is also everyday Tamil Hindu vocabulary for the visible form of a deity — including idol forms and Vishnu’s viśvarūpam (cosmic form) — so it can under-translate μορφή into mere appearance, exactly the reading the Greek excludes. The rendering must be paired with the continuous-existence force of ὑπάρχων (“இருந்தும்” / already and continuously being) so that “form of God” reads as possessing God’s very nature, not wearing a divine appearance. Per this Language Package’s God-word decision, new compound coinages use கடவுள் (see 12_ai_translation_requirements.md on the inherited-compound tension).
2:6b — οὐχ ἁρπαγμὸν ἡγήσατο τὸ εἶναι ἴσα θεῷ
| Terms | Variants | Analysis |
|---|---|---|
| ἁρπαγμός harpagmos | (1) act of seizing, robbery; (2) thing seized/prize; (3) something to be exploited or clutched | NT hapax legomenon; one of the most debated words in the Greek NT. Modern consensus (Hoover, N.T. Wright): “something to be taken advantage of / exploited for oneself.” Christ possessed equality with God and refused to exploit it for self-advantage. |
| ἴσα θεῷ isa theō | equal with God, on equal terms with God | Adverbial ἴσα: existence on equal terms with God. Presupposed as Christ’s possession, not his ambition. |
Tamil rendering risk (Critical): the Old Version’s கொள்ளையாடின பொருள் (“a thing seized by plunder”) preserves the traditional “prize to be grasped” reading. Two failure modes: (1) rendering that implies Christ lacked equality with God and declined to steal it — an Arian reading; (2) rendering that makes equality something he discarded. The correct sense: he possessed it and refused to exploit it. கடவுளுக்குச் சமமாயிருப்பது (being equal with God) must be stated as a possessed reality.
2:7a — ἀλλὰ ἑαυτὸν ἐκένωσεν
| Terms | Variants | Analysis |
|---|---|---|
| κενόω kenoō | empty, make void, deprive of content, make of no effect | The verb that names the kenosis doctrine. Elsewhere Paul uses it figuratively (“make of no effect”: Romans 4:14; 1 Corinthians 1:17). The context defines how Christ emptied himself: not by subtracting deity but by taking — “taking the form of a servant.” The emptying is an adding of humiliation, not a deletion of divine nature. |
Tamil rendering risk (Critical — the single highest-risk term in this curriculum): the Old Version renders தம்மைத்தாமே வெறுமையாக்கி (“made himself empty”). வெறுமை (emptiness) is established in Tamil Bible tradition and retained here, but it must never drift toward:
- சூன்யம் (śūnya, void/nothingness) — Buddhist śūnyatā and Tamil folk usage where சூன்யம் also connotes sorcery/nullity. Absolutely forbidden.
- Any rendering implying Christ lost, gave up, or suspended his deity (தெய்வத்தன்மையை இழந்தார் or equivalents). The grammar ties the emptying to the taking of a servant’s form: he emptied himself by taking, not by subtracting.
Phase 2 translators must keep the participial logic visible: தம்மைத் தாமே வெறுமையாக்கி, அடிமையின் ரூபத்தை எடுத்து — the second clause interprets the first.
2:7b — μορφὴν δούλου λαβών, ἐν ὁμοιώματι ἀνθρώπων γενόμενος
| Terms | Variants | Analysis |
|---|---|---|
| δοῦλος doulos | slave, bond-servant | Not a hired servant (διάκονος/μισθωτός) but a slave — the lowest social position. Deliberate maximal contrast with μορφῇ θεοῦ. |
| λαβών labōn | having taken | Aorist participle of means: the emptying happened by taking. Nothing divine is dropped; something human is assumed. |
| ὁμοίωμα homoiōma | likeness, resemblance, same form | ”In the likeness of men”: genuinely human, while the word choice (rather than a bare “became a man”) leaves room for what he remained — sinless, and still in God’s form. Must not be pushed toward “seemed like a man” (docetism). |
| γενόμενος genomenos | having become | γίνομαι: he became — a real historical event, contrasting with ὑπάρχων (eternal existence) in v6. |
Tamil rendering risk (Critical): two opposite errors are both live in the Tamil religious environment. (1) Avatar assimilation: Tamil Vaishnavism’s dasavatara theology makes “God descending in a form” instantly legible — and instantly wrong: an avatar is a repeatable, often partial or temporary divine descent that does not involve real, permanent assumption of full humanity, humiliation, or death. அவதாரம் and its verb forms (அவதரித்தார்) are forbidden for this passage (inherited Romans rule, maximally load-bearing here). (2) Docetic under-translation: மனிதர் சாயலில் (in the likeness of men) must not read as “appeared human but was not.” The established phrase மனுஷர் சாயலானார் / மனித சாயலில் பிறந்தார் needs the surrounding clauses (servant’s form, obedient to death) to keep his humanity real. அடிமை (slave) is the established Old Version term for δοῦλος here (அடிமையின் ரூபம்) and is retained; note that in Tamil Nadu’s anti-caste political context “slave” language about voluntary self-lowering must be framed as Christ’s free choice from a position of highest status, never as endorsement of imposed servility.
2:8 — σχήματι εὑρεθεὶς ὡς ἄνθρωπος ἐταπείνωσεν ἑαυτὸν γενόμενος ὑπήκοος μέχρι θανάτου, θανάτου δὲ σταυροῦ
| Terms | Variants | Analysis |
|---|---|---|
| σχῆμα schēma | outward appearance, fashion, bearing | The observable, external aspect — what others saw. Complements (does not replace) μορφή and ὁμοίωμα. |
| ἐταπείνωσεν etapeinōsen | humbled, lowered | ταπεινόω: voluntary self-lowering. The active verb with reflexive ἑαυτόν: he humbled himself — no one humbled him. Root of ταπεινοφροσύνη (humility, 2:3). |
| ὑπήκοος hypēkoos | obedient | Obedience “unto death” — the extent, not the recipient, of obedience (obedient to the Father, as far as death). |
| σταυρός stauros | cross | Roman execution instrument for slaves and rebels; the σχήμα of ultimate shame. The hymn’s lowest point, marked emphatically: “even death on a cross.” |
Tamil rendering risk (High): தம்மைத் தாழ்த்தினார் (humbled himself) is established and safe if the reflexive, voluntary force is preserved. In an honor-conscious, caste-sensitive Tamil context, the doctrinal point is that the highest voluntarily took the lowest place — self-humbling from supremacy, not humiliation imposed by hierarchy. மரணபரியந்தம் கீழ்ப்படிந்து (obedient unto death) is established; கீழ்ப்படிதல் must read as filial obedience to the Father, not fatalistic submission (தலைவிதி vocabulary forbidden, inherited rule). சிலுவை (cross) is fully established, Low risk in itself; retain the emphatic doubling (“சிலுவையின் மரணபரியந்தமும்”).
2:9 — διὸ καὶ ὁ θεὸς αὐτὸν ὑπερύψωσεν καὶ ἐχαρίσατο αὐτῷ τὸ ὄνομα τὸ ὑπὲρ πᾶν ὄνομα
| Terms | Variants | Analysis |
|---|---|---|
| ὑπερύψωσεν hyperypsōsen | highly exalted, exalted to the highest place | NT hapax; ὑπέρ-compound of ὑψόω. God’s answering act to Christ’s self-humbling — exaltation to the supreme position. Echoes Isaiah 52:13 LXX (the Servant “shall be exalted and lifted up”). |
| ἐχαρίσατο echarisato | graciously gave, bestowed | From χάρις (grace — inherited term கிருபை): the name is bestowed as gift, within the Godhead’s economy, not earned as merit-wage. Guard against a karma-frame reading (good deed → reward payout). |
| ὄνομα onoma | name, title, revealed identity | ”The name above every name”: in Septuagint idiom, the divine name itself (YHWH → κύριος). The bestowed name is κύριος (v11). |
Tamil rendering risk (High): எல்லாவற்றிற்கும் மேலாக உயர்த்தினார் (highly exalted) is established. Two risks: (1) the exaltation must read as vindication-bestowal within God’s purpose, not a karma-merit transaction (“because he did good, he received a reward”) — the ἐχαρίσατο (graciously gave) must keep கிருபை-adjacent gift language; (2) the name: Tamil bhakti practice gives divine names enormous devotional weight (nāma-japa, recitation of the divine name; Vishnu sahasranāma, the thousand names). எல்லா நாமத்திற்கும் மேலான நாமம் (the name above every name) is correct and established, but the surrounding teaching must not let “the name” function as a mantra whose repetition has intrinsic power. The name is the revealed identity and title of the risen Jesus — கர்த்தர் — before whom persons bow; it is not a syllable-formula.
2:10 — ἵνα ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι Ἰησοῦ πᾶν γόνυ κάμψῃ ἐπουρανίων καὶ ἐπιγείων καὶ καταχθονίων
| Terms | Variants | Analysis |
|---|---|---|
| πᾶν γόνυ κάμψῃ pan gony kampsē | every knee shall bow | Direct quotation of Isaiah 45:23, where Yahweh swears every knee will bow to him. Paul transfers the oath to Jesus — among the strongest Pauline assertions of Christ’s deity. |
| ἐπουρανίων καὶ ἐπιγείων καὶ καταχθονίων epouraniōn kai epigeiōn kai katachthoniōn | heavenly, earthly, and under-the-earth beings | Total cosmic scope: no being anywhere is exempt. |
Tamil rendering risk (High): முழங்கால் யாவும் முடங்கும் (every knee shall bow) is established. Universality must not be softened (inherited universality rule — sharpened in Tamil Nadu by anti-caste “no distinction” sensitivities: every knee includes every caste, every deity-allegiance, every social rank). The threefold cosmic scope (வானோர், பூமியிலுள்ளோர், பூமியின் கீழுள்ளோர்) must not be mapped onto Hindu three-world cosmology (மூவுலகம் / svarga-bhūmi-pātāla) as though Paul endorsed that cosmography; translate the three domains plainly.
2:11 — καὶ πᾶσα γλῶσσα ἐξομολογήσηται ὅτι κύριος Ἰησοῦς Χριστὸς εἰς δόξαν θεοῦ πατρός
| Terms | Variants | Analysis |
|---|---|---|
| ἐξομολογήσηται exomologēsētai | confess openly, acknowledge publicly | Public, verbal acknowledgment — the same confession vocabulary as Romans 10:9. |
| κύριος Ἰησοῦς Χριστός kyrios Iēsous Christos | Jesus Christ is Lord | The confession itself. κύριος is the Septuagint’s rendering of YHWH; with the Isaiah 45:23 backdrop, the confession ascribes the divine name to Jesus. |
| εἰς δόξαν θεοῦ πατρός eis doxan theou patros | to the glory of God the Father | Christ’s exaltation glorifies, not rivals, the Father — intra-Trinitarian harmony. |
Tamil rendering risk (Critical): the confession must be rendered with the inherited fixed form: இயேசு கிறிஸ்து கர்த்தர் என்று நாவுகள் யாவும் அறிக்கை செய்யும் — using கர்த்தர் (inherited Critical term, never எஜமான்). This is the same confession as Romans 10:9 and must stay verbatim-consistent with the Romans package’s rendering convention. “To the glory of God the Father” uses the inherited பிதா for Father and the God-word convention (கடவுள்) per the requirements doc.
§2.C — 2:12-30: Living out the hymn (application and examples)
| Terms | Variants | Analysis |
|---|---|---|
| κατεργάζεσθε (τὴν ἑαυτῶν σωτηρίαν) katergazesthe | work out, bring to full effect | ”Work out your salvation” — inseparable from the next clause. |
| ὁ ἐνεργῶν ἐν ὑμῖν ho energōn en hymin | the one working in you | ”For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure” (2:13) — the theological counterweight that makes 2:12 safe. |
| γογγυσμῶν καὶ διαλογισμῶν gongysmōn kai dialogismōn | grumblings and disputings | The behavior believers must avoid — echoes wilderness Israel (Numbers, Deuteronomy 32:5 quoted next). |
| ἄμεμπτοι καὶ ἀκέραιοι, τέκνα θεοῦ ἄμωμα amemptoi kai akeraioi, tekna theou amōma | blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish | Ethical goal contrasted with “a crooked and twisted generation” (γενεᾶς σκολιᾶς καὶ διεστραμμένης, quoting Deuteronomy 32:5). |
| φωστῆρες ἐν κόσμῳ phōstēres en kosmō | lights/luminaries in the world | Believers shine as lights holding fast the word of life — echoes Daniel 12:3. |
| σπένδομαι ἐπὶ τῇ θυσίᾳ καὶ λειτουργίᾳ τῆς πίστεως spendomai epi tē thysia kai leitourgia tēs pisteōs | poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrifice and service of your faith | Paul’s possible martyrdom described as a libation completing the Philippians’ own faith-offering (Numbers 15:1-10 background). |
| ἰσόψυχον, γνησίως … μεριμνήσει isopsychon, gnēsiōs … merimnēsei | like-minded, genuinely concerned | Timothy commended: no one else is as genuinely concerned for the Philippians’ welfare (2:20). |
| δοκιμήν dokimēn | proven character, tested worth | Timothy’s proven character, “as a son with his father,” is well known to the Philippians (2:22). |
| ἀπόστολον καὶ λειτουργὸν τῆς χρείας μου, παραβολευσάμενος τῇ ψυχῇ, μέχρι θανάτου ἤγγισεν apostolon kai leitourgon … parabouleusamenos tē psychē … mechri thanatou ēngisen | messenger and minister to my need, having gambled/risked his life, came near to death | Epaphroditus’s service described in the language of a soldier risking his life in battle — the letter’s second living illustration (after Timothy) of the hymn’s self-giving pattern. |
Tamil rendering risk: Work out your salvation (Critical — see 2:5-11’s companion doctrine, carried by name in the doctrine registry as salvation_worked_out_god_working_within): the pairing rule is absolute — 2:12 (உங்கள் இரட்சிப்பு நிறைவேறும்படி செயல்படுங்கள்) is never rendered, quoted, or excerpted apart from 2:13 (கடவுளே உங்களில் செயல்படுகிறார்). NEVER earning verbs (சம்பாதித்தல், உழைத்துப் பெறுதல்) given the புண்ணியம் accumulation frame this sentence otherwise invites. Blameless children vs. crooked generation (Medium): குற்றமற்றவர்களும் நிர்மலமானவர்களும் … கோணலும் மாறுபாடுமான சந்ததி — the Deuteronomy 32:5 echo should be preserved for the cross-reference to register (see 09_cross_reference_analysis.md). Drink offering (High): பானபலி — OT sacrificial frame only; never Hindu libation/abhiṣekam vocabulary (see 02_cultural_context.md). Timothy and Epaphroditus (Medium): these are the letter’s living illustrations of the hymn applied to ordinary believers; ஆத்மார்த்தமான அக்கறை (genuine concern) and உயிரையே பணயம் வைத்து (risking his very life) should read as costly, voluntary self-giving, echoing (without repeating identical vocabulary) the hymn’s pattern.
§3. Chapter 3 (Philippians 3:1-21)
3:1-6 — Warning against false confidence
| Terms | Variants | Analysis |
|---|---|---|
| χαίρετε ἐν κυρίῳ chairete en kyriō | rejoice in the Lord | The letter’s recurring command (also 4:4); joy is always anchored “in the Lord.” |
| κύνας, κακοὺς ἐργάτας, τὴν κατατομήν kynas, kakous ergatas, tēn katatomēn | dogs, evil workers, the mutilation | Sharp polemic (three parallel epithets) against Judaizing false teachers demanding circumcision; κατατομή (“mutilation”) is a deliberate wordplay against περιτομή (“circumcision”). |
| περιτομή … πνεύματι θεοῦ λατρεύοντες … καυχώμενοι ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ … οὐκ ἐν σαρκὶ πεποιθότες peritomē … pneumati theou latreuontes … kauchōmenoi en Christō … ouk en sarki pepoithotes | circumcision … worshiping by the Spirit of God … boasting in Christ Jesus … having no confidence in the flesh | Paul redefines true “circumcision” as worship by the Spirit, boasting in Christ, and explicit renunciation of confidence in the flesh — a phrase that names the entire false-security system the chapter dismantles. |
Tamil rendering risk: “Dogs, evil workers, the mutilation” (Medium-High): நாய்கள், பொல்லாத வேலையாட்கள், சிதைவு — the polemic’s referent (a specific group of false teachers demanding circumcision) must stay unambiguous so it is not read as a slur on any present-day community, and so “dogs” does not land as a caste-adjacent insult in the Tamil social register (see 02_cultural_context.md). Confidence in the flesh (Critical — new named doctrine term for this chapter): சரீரத்தில் நம்பிக்கை வைத்தல் — this phrase names precisely the false-security system (ancestry, law-keeping, ritual status) that the chapter’s autobiography (3:4-6) itemizes and then renounces (3:7-9); it must read as a rejected basis of confidence, structurally identical to the சுயநீதி (own righteousness) it grounds, and must not be softened into merely “trusting in physical things” — the doctrinal target is self-achieved religious standing.
3:7-11 — Righteousness from God and knowing Christ
(Full verse-level treatment retained from the prior version; already covers γνῶσις, δικαιοσύνη ἐκ θεοῦ ἐπὶ τῇ πίστει, σκύβαλα.)
| Terms | Variants | Analysis |
|---|---|---|
| δικαιοσύνη ἐκ θεοῦ ἐπὶ τῇ πίστει dikaiosynē ek theou epi tē pistei | righteousness from God, on the basis of faith | Inherited Critical cluster: நீதி (never தர்மம்), விசுவாசம் (never பக்தி). Contrast pair: emphatic emphasized. |
| σκύβαλα skybala | refuse, dung | NT hapax (adjective form here as noun). Strong word for worthlessness relative to knowing Christ. |
| γνῶσις (τοῦ Χριστοῦ) gnōsis | knowledge, personal acquaintance | ”The surpassing worth of knowing Christ.” Personal, relational — not esoteric insight. |
| συμμορφιζόμενος τῷ θανάτῳ αὐτοῦ symmorphizomenos tō thanatō autou | being conformed to his death | Structurally significant echo: this is the only other NT use of a μορφή-cognate outside the hymn (2:6-7’s μορφή/μεταμορφόω family) — Paul’s own life pattern (dying and rising with Christ) deliberately re-enacts the hymn’s shape: humiliation before exaltation. |
| τὴν ἐξανάστασιν τὴν ἐκ νεκρῶν tēn exanastasin tēn ek nekrōn | the resurrection from the dead (out-resurrection) | Emphatic compound (ἐξανάστασις, not the ordinary ἀνάστασις) — bodily resurrection as the goal of knowing Christ’s sufferings. |
Tamil rendering risk: Conformed to his death (High — new term, structurally linked to the hymn): அவருடைய மரணத்திற்கு ஒப்பாக்கப்படுதல் — the ரூப-cognate link to 2:6-7’s ரூபம்/மறுரூபமாக்குதல் family should be made visible in teaching material (not necessarily in the running translation) so that Paul’s own suffering-to-glory pattern is seen as an imitation of the hymn’s shape, not a separate, unrelated concept. Continue enforcing the inherited Critical terms for righteousness, faith, resurrection, and the already-established Critical/High tiers for knowing Christ (ஞானம் never used alone) and rubbish (குப்பை).
3:12-16 — Pressing on, not yet perfect
| Terms | Variants | Analysis |
|---|---|---|
| οὐχ ὅτι ἤδη ἔλαβον ἢ ἤδη τετελείωμαι ouch hoti ēdē elabon ē ēdē teteleiōmai | not that I have already obtained or am already perfected | Explicit denial of present attainment — Paul has NOT arrived. |
| διώκω, ἐπεκτεινόμενος, κατὰ σκοπὸν διώκω εἰς τὸ βραβεῖον diōkō, epekteinomenos, kata skopon diōkō eis to brabeion | I press on, straining forward, toward the goal for the prize | Athletic-race metaphor: intense forward effort, not passive attainment. |
| ὅσοι οὖν τέλειοι hosoi oun teleioi | as many as are mature/perfect | τέλειος here means “mature,” a relative maturity for those pressing on — not the absolute perfection Paul just denied having. |
Tamil rendering risk (High — new term “mature/perfect”): முதிர்ச்சியடைந்தோர் (the mature) — must read as ongoing, relative spiritual maturity attained through pressing on in dependence on Christ (3:12’s “Christ Jesus has made me his own”), never as a claimed FINAL attainment. This is a live risk because Tamil religious culture supplies a native image of the spiritually “attained” adept — the Siddhar tradition’s சித்தர் (an adept credited with perfected yogic/alchemical mastery) — and சித்தி/attainment-register vocabulary must be avoided for τέλειος here. Prize/goal (பரிசு/இலக்கு) is God’s own upward call (see பரம அழைப்பு, already inherited from the letter-wide glossary), not a rung on a ladder of spiritual ascent.
3:17-21 — Citizenship in heaven and bodily transformation
| Terms | Variants | Analysis |
|---|---|---|
| συμμιμηταί μου γίνεσθε symmimētai mou ginesthe | become fellow imitators of me | Paul as a pattern to imitate, as he imitates Christ (implicit 1 Corinthians 11:1 parallel). |
| ἐχθροὺς τοῦ σταυροῦ τοῦ Χριστοῦ, ὧν ὁ θεὸς ἡ κοιλία, τὰ ἐπίγεια φρονοῦντες echthrous tou staurou tou Christou, hōn ho theos hē koilia, ta epigeia phronountes | enemies of the cross of Christ, whose god is their belly, who set their minds on earthly things | Fourth (negative) occurrence of the φρονέω thread — minding earthly things is the direct opposite of the hymn’s mindset. |
| πολίτευμα politeuma | commonwealth/citizenship | NT hapax. “Commonwealth/citizenship” — Philippi was a Roman colony; believers are a colony of heaven. Verb form already introduced at 1:27. |
| σωτήρ sōtēr | Savior | New term for this curriculum; the personal title of the awaited Christ, cognate with inherited இரட்சிப்பு. |
| μετασχηματίσει τὸ σῶμα τῆς ταπεινώσεως ἡμῶν σύμμορφον τῷ σώματι τῆς δόξης αὐτοῦ metaschēmatisei to sōma tēs tapeinōseōs hēmōn symmorphon tō sōmati tēs doxēs autou | he will transform our lowly body to be conformed to his glorious body | A third μορφή-family occurrence (σύμμορφον) — the resurrection body will share the FORM of Christ’s glorified body, the same word-family that opened the hymn (μορφῇ θεοῦ, 2:6) and marked Paul’s own suffering (συμμορφιζόμενος, 3:10). The whole letter’s μορφή-thread traces one arc: divine form (2:6) → servant form (2:7) → conformity to his death (3:10) → conformity to his glory (3:21). |
Tamil rendering risk: Enemies of the cross / god is their belly (Medium-High): கிறிஸ்துவின் சிலுவைக்குப் பகைவர், அவர்களுடைய தேவன் வயிறு — a strong polemic against self-indulgent false teaching; the “earthly-minded” contrast with 3:20’s heavenly citizenship should be kept sharp. The μορφή-thread across the letter (High, cross-document rule): teaching materials should note that ரூபம் (2:6), அடிமையின் ரூபம் (2:7), ஒப்பாக்கப்படுதல் (3:10), and மறுரூபமாக்குதல் (3:21) all belong to one Greek word-family and trace the single arc of the whole letter — divine glory, to servant humiliation, to shared suffering, to shared glory. Already-covered terms (குடியுரிமை, பரலோகம், இரட்சகர், மறுரூபமாக்குதல்) retain their established Critical/High tiers.
§4. Chapter 4 (Philippians 4:1-23)
4:1-3 — Standing firm, resolving conflict
| Terms | Variants | Analysis |
|---|---|---|
| στήκετε ἐν κυρίῳ stēkete en kyriō | stand firm in the Lord | Echoes 1:27’s standing-firm command; the letter’s practical conclusion begins here. |
| τὸ αὐτὸ φρονεῖν ἐν κυρίῳ to auto phronein en kyriō | to agree/be of the same mind in the Lord | Fifth occurrence of the φρονέω thread, now addressed to two named individuals in conflict. |
| γνήσιε σύζυγε gnēsie syzyge | true companion / genuine yokefellow | Address to an unnamed co-worker asked to help Euodia and Syntyche; συζυγε may also be a proper name (a wordplay), a matter of scholarly debate not affecting the doctrinal content. |
| αἵτινες … συνήθλησάν μοι haitines … synēthlēsan moi | who labored/contended side by side with me | Same athletic-struggle root as 1:27’s συναθλέω — these women are fellow-strugglers in gospel work, not passive members. |
Tamil rendering risk (Medium): naming Euodia and Syntyche (எயோதியாள், சிந்திகேயாள்) in a public appeal is socially delicate in Tamil honor culture; the register must preserve their dignity as valued gospel co-workers (“whose names are in the book of life,” 4:3) rather than reading as public shaming. கர்த்தருக்குள் ஒரே சிந்தையாயிருங்கள் (agree in the Lord) keeps the letter’s φரோனேவ் thread consistent.
4:4-7 — Joy, gentleness, and the peace that guards
| Terms | Variants | Analysis |
|---|---|---|
| χαίρετε ἐν κυρίῳ πάντοτε … πάλιν ἐρῶ, χαίρετε chairete en kyriō pantote … palin erō, chairete | rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice | The doubled imperative — the letter’s joy command reaches its emphatic climax. |
| τὸ ἐπιεικὲς ὑμῶν to epieikes hymōn | gentleness, reasonableness, yielding forbearance | A distinct virtue from joy: a gracious, non-retaliatory bearing “known to everyone.” |
| ὁ κύριος ἐγγύς ho kyrios engys | the Lord is near / at hand | Ambiguous between spatial nearness (present help) and temporal nearness (imminent return) — likely both are intended. |
| μηδὲν μεριμνᾶτε mēden merimnate | be anxious/worried about nothing | The explicit prohibition of anxiety, immediately paired with the positive alternative (prayer). |
| τῇ προσευχῇ καὶ τῇ δεήσει μετὰ εὐχαριστίας τὰ αἰτήματα ὑμῶν γνωριζέσθω πρὸς τὸν θεόν tē proseuchē kai tē deēsei meta eucharistias ta aitēmata hymōn gnōrizesthō pros ton theon | let your requests be made known to God by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving | The prescribed alternative to anxiety: direct petition to God, joined with gratitude. |
| ἡ εἰρήνη τοῦ θεοῦ ἡ ὑπερέχουσα πάντα νοῦν φρουρήσει τὰς καρδίας ὑμῶν hē eirēnē tou theou hē hyperechousa panta noun phrourēsei tas kardias hymōn | the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts | φρουρέω is a military term (garrison/guard a city) — God’s peace stands sentry over the believer’s inner life. |
Tamil rendering risk: Gentleness/forbearance (Medium — new term): உங்கள் சாந்தகுணம் (your gentleness) — a natural Tamil virtue term; low ambiguity, though translators should avoid confusing this சாந்தம்/gentleness word with the REJECTED சாந்தி (śānti, meditative tranquility) used for “peace” elsewhere — the two are etymologically related in Tamil but doctrinally distinct uses; the peace-of-God rule (never சாந்தி) applies specifically to 4:7’s εἰρήνη, not to this unrelated gentleness term. The Lord is near (Medium): கர்த்தர் சமீபமாயிருக்கிறார் — retain the productive ambiguity (presence and imminent return) rather than collapsing to only one sense. Do not be anxious (High — new forbidden-adjacent term): onething கவலைப்படாதிருங்கள் — must not be taught as fatalistic resignation (தலைவிதி acceptance) but as active replacement of anxiety with prayer; the alternative offered is relational (bringing requests to a personal God), not detachment technique. Peace of God that guards (already inherited, High): the guarding/garrison image (காத்துக்கொள்ளும்) should be kept as an active, protective verb, not a static descriptive state — this strengthens (rather than repeats) the existing rule against சாந்தி.
4:8-9 — Right thinking
| Terms | Variants | Analysis |
|---|---|---|
| ὅσα ἀληθῆ, ὅσα σεμνά, ὅσα δίκαια, ὅσα ἁγνά, ὅσα προσφιλῆ, ὅσα εὔφημα … ταῦτα λογίζεσθε hosa alēthē, hosa semna, hosa dikaia, hosa hagna, hosa prosphilē, hosa euphēma … tauta logizesthe | whatever is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable … think on/dwell on these things | A six-fold virtue list drawing on shared moral vocabulary intelligible across cultures — deliberately using terms common in Hellenistic ethical writing generally, not distinctively Christian technical terms. |
| ἃ καὶ ἐμάθετε καὶ παρελάβετε καὶ ἠκούσατε καὶ εἴδετε ἐν ἐμοί ha kai emathete kai parelabete kai ēkousate kai eidete en emoi | what you learned and received and heard and saw in me | Paul’s own life as the practical, embodied model of the virtue list — teaching is completed by example. |
Tamil rendering risk (Low, per the existing doctrine registry’s thinking_on_what_is_excellent): the virtue list translates naturally into formal Tamil moral vocabulary (சத்தியமானவை, கனமானவை, நீதியானவை, சுத்தமானவை, இனிமையானவை, நற்பெயருள்ளவை); no significant syncretism risk, though translators may note the list’s deliberately general, cross-culturally intelligible register (a rare moment in the letter using non-technical ethical vocabulary) rather than importing Christian-specific glosses that are not in the Greek.
4:10-13 — Contentment
(Full treatment retained from the prior version — αὐτάρκης, “I can do all things through him.”)
| Terms | Variants | Analysis |
|---|---|---|
| αὐτάρκης autarkēs | self-sufficient | NT hapax (adjective). Stoic technical term for self-sufficiency — which Paul subverts: his sufficiency is Christ’s strength (4:13), not self-mastery. |
| μεμύημαι memyēmai | I have learned the secret / been initiated | A rare word (used of initiation into mystery cults) deliberately repurposed: Paul’s “secret” of contentment is not esoteric ritual knowledge but Christ’s supply “in any and every circumstance.” |
| πάντα ἰσχύω ἐν τῷ ἐνδυναμοῦντί με panta ischyō en tō endynamounti me | I am strong for all things in the one empowering me | Christ-supplied strength, not a self-power slogan. |
Tamil rendering risk (High, inherited tier retained): மனநிறைவு must not drift to பற்றின்மை/ஆசையின்மை (detachment/desirelessness). Note the new term μεμύημαι/“learned the secret” (Medium): ரகசியத்தை அறிந்திருக்கிறேன் (I have learned the secret) — the word’s mystery-cult background makes this an especially pointed subversion: Paul explicitly borrows initiation-language and empties it of esoteric content, filling it instead with ordinary Christian dependence on Christ. Translators should not let ரகசியம் (secret/mystery) suggest hidden gnosis; the “secret” is openly stated in the next verse (Christ’s empowering).
4:14-23 — Giving, God’s supply, closing greetings
| Terms | Variants | Analysis |
|---|---|---|
| ἐκοινώνησέν μοι εἰς λόγον δόσεως καὶ λήμψεως ekoinōnēsen moi eis logon doseōs kai lēmpseōs | shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving | Commercial bookkeeping metaphor (a ledger of giving/receiving) applied warmly to the Philippians’ partnership — repurposed, not literal transaction. |
| ὀσμὴν εὐωδίας, θυσίαν δεκτήν, εὐάρεστον τῷ θεῷ osmēn euōdias, thysian dektēn, euareston tō theō | a fragrant aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God | The Philippians’ financial gift described in full Old Testament sacrificial vocabulary (Genesis 8:21; Exodus 29:18 background). |
| ὁ θεός μου πληρώσει πᾶσαν χρείαν ὑμῶν κατὰ τὸ πλοῦτος αὐτοῦ ἐν δόξῃ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ ho theos mou plērōsei pasan chreian hymōn kata to ploutos autou en doxē en Christō Iēsou | my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus | The letter’s climactic promise of God’s supply — answering the Philippians’ own sacrificial giving, not a general prosperity guarantee. |
| οἱ ἐκ τῆς Καίσαρος οἰκίας hoi ek tēs Kaisaros oikias | those of Caesar’s household | Closing detail: believers exist even within the imperial administration — a quiet echo of the letter’s citizenship theme (allegiance to a higher Lord even from within Caesar’s own house). |
Tamil rendering risk: Giving and receiving (Medium, inherited doctrine sacrificial_giving_and_gods_supply): கொடுத்தல் பெறுதல் என்ற உறவு (the relationship/ledger of giving and receiving) — the commercial metaphor is Paul’s own and may be kept, but must stay warmly relational (a partnership account, not a debt-transaction); does not license a merit-accumulating தானம் (religious-giving-for-merit) reading. God will supply every need (High, new sharpened rule): இது எனது கடவுள் உங்கள் எல்லாத் தேவைகளையும் … நிறைவாக்குவார் — this promise answers SACRIFICIAL GIVING (4:14-18) specifically; teaching material must not detach it into a general prosperity-gospel guarantee divorced from its context, a documented pressure point in some Tamil Pentecostal and independent-church settings (see 05_translation_landscape.md). Caesar’s household (Low): இராயனுடைய வீட்டார் — historical detail; low doctrinal risk, useful teaching note on the reach of the gospel into the empire’s own administration.
Letter-wide structural notes
The φρονέω (“mind/disposition”) thread across all four chapters
φρονέω recurs at 1:7; 2:2 (twice); 2:5; 3:15 (twice); 3:19; 4:2; 4:10 — roughly 10 of its 26 NT occurrences concentrated in this one short letter. Every occurrence must render consistently with சிந்தை-based phrasing; the thread’s climax is 2:5’s command to adopt “the mind of Christ” (the hymn), and its low point is 3:19’s earthly-minded false teachers. Consistency here is a structural, not merely lexical, requirement: the letter’s argument depends on readers recognizing the same word recurring.
The μορφή (“form”) word-family across the letter
μορφή (2:6, 2:7) → σύμμορφος/συμμορφίζω (3:10, 3:21) traces a single arc: Christ’s eternal divine form → his assumed servant-form → the believer’s conformity to his death → the believer’s future conformity to his glory. This is the clearest evidence that 2:5-11 is not an isolated devotional insert but the letter’s structural key. Tamil ரூபம் (2:6-7), ஒப்பாக்கப்படுதல் (3:10), and மறுரூபமாக்குதல் (3:21) should be recognized by Phase 2 reviewers as one connected thread even where the surface Tamil vocabulary differs across occurrences (the Greek itself varies morphologically too).
The χαρά/χαίρω (“joy/rejoice”) thread across the letter
16 joy-words distributed across all four chapters (1:4, 1:18 twice, 1:25; 2:2, 2:17 twice, 2:18 twice, 2:28, 2:29; 3:1; 4:1, 4:4 twice, 4:10) — every major section pairs joy with an adversity (imprisonment 1:12-18, possible martyrdom 2:17-18, warning against false teachers 3:1, conflict 4:2-4, want 4:10-13). The pairing must remain visible in translation; joy is never presented as circumstance-dependent mood.
Idioms and covenantal language in the letter (full-book)
| Source expression | Reference | Handling |
|---|---|---|
| ”I have you in my heart” | Philippians 1:7 | Natural Tamil affection idiom acceptable; no doctrinal load. |
| ”poured out as a drink offering” (σπένδομαι) | Philippians 2:17 | OT libation image (Numbers 15:1-10). Render as sacrificial pouring (பானபலியாக ஊற்றப்படுதல்) with the OT frame; do not borrow Hindu temple libation/abhiṣekam vocabulary. |
| ”dogs… mutilators of the flesh” | Philippians 3:2 | Polemic against circumcision-demanders; keep the referent clear so it is not read as a slur on any present-day community. |
| ”rubbish/refuse” (σκύβαλα) | Philippians 3:8 | Strong word (refuse/dung). குப்பை is adequate; register must stay forceful but not vulgar. |
| ”book of life” | Philippians 4:3 | ஜீவ புஸ்தகம் — established apocalyptic image; no karmic-ledger (கணக்கு) framing, which would import the citragupta record-keeper concept. |
| ”a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice” | Philippians 4:18 | Financial support described in OT sacrifice terms; use பலி/காணிக்கை with the God-ward direction explicit — not temple-offering-for-benefit framing. |
| ”the day of Christ” | Philippians 1:6, 1:10, 2:16 | கிறிஸ்துவின் நாள் — linear eschatology (inherited rule): a fixed future day, not a cyclical age-turn (yuga). |
| ”I have learned the secret” (μεμύημαι) | Philippians 4:12 | Mystery-cult initiation vocabulary deliberately repurposed; render as openly-stated Christian dependence, not esoteric gnosis. |
| ”giving and receiving” | Philippians 4:15 | Commercial ledger metaphor for gospel partnership; keep relational, not transactional. |
Historically debated terms in this letter
| Term | Debate | Position this package encodes |
|---|---|---|
| ἁρπαγμός (2:6) | “Thing to be grasped at” (res rapienda — not yet possessed) vs “thing to be exploited” (res rapta — possessed, not leveraged) | Christ possessed equality with God and refused to exploit it. Any rendering implying he lacked it is an Arian mistranslation and is Critical-flagged. |
| κενόω (2:7) | 19th-century kenotic theories: did Christ surrender divine attributes? | The emptying is defined by the participles: by taking a servant’s form. No attribute-surrender language permitted. |
| μορφή (2:6-7) | “Nature/essence” vs “status/glory” readings | Render so that possession of God’s nature is not deniable from the Tamil text; the status dimension (refusing to exploit) rides on top of, not instead of, the nature claim. |
| Isaiah 45:23 in 2:10-11 | Whether the allusion ascribes the divine name to Jesus | Yes — encoded via the inherited Critical rule that the confession uses கர்த்தர், the same word carrying YHWH-force in Tamil Bible tradition. |
| τέλειος (3:12, 3:15) | Whether Paul claims present perfection or denies it | 3:12 explicitly denies it (“not that I have already… been perfected”); 3:15’s τέλειοι means relative maturity among those still pressing on, not attained perfection. |
| σύζυγε (4:3) | Common noun (“yokefellow/companion”) or a proper name (a wordplay Παῦλος makes on an unknown “Syzygus”) | Either reading is doctrinally inert; this package treats it as a common-noun address (“true companion”) per majority translation practice. |
