Core Glossary

Core Glossary: 1 Corinthians — English → Telugu

Purpose

This glossary consolidates every load-bearing theological term identified in analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md, across the entire book of 1 Corinthians (chapters 1-16), for use in Phase 2 translation memory population. Terms already fixed in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json are marked Baseline — Reused and MUST use the exact recorded Telugu rendering; no deviation is permitted. Terms newly introduced by 1 Corinthians are marked New and carry a proposed risk tier for confirmation in the doctrine risk registry (Step 2).

Risk tiers follow the same framework as the baseline: Critical (human theologian review, absolute enforcement), High (human theologian review), Medium (native speaker review), Low (automated review).

Cross-Cutting Risk Notes for Phase 2

  1. Wisdom/Knowledge pair (జ్ఞానం / విజ్ఞానం): This curriculum locks σοφία → జ్ఞానం and γνῶσις → విజ్ఞానం as a distinct pair throughout 1 Corinthians (especially chapters 1-3, 8, 12-13). Any drift toward using జ్ఞానం for both concepts must be flagged.
  2. Idol vocabulary (విగ్రహం family): Chapters 8, 10, and 12 carry the curriculum’s single highest live syncretism risk, given active regional Hindu image-worship practice. All idol/idolatry/idol-food terms require human theologian review without exception, and ప్రసాదం is an absolute forbidden substitution for “food offered to idols.”
  3. Love (ప్రేమ) in chapter 13: Given Telugu cinema’s dominant romantic-love association with this word, chapter 13 as a whole should be flagged for theologian review of the full passage, not merely term-by-term.
  4. Resurrection-body vocabulary (ch.15): The ఆత్మసంబంధమైన శరీరం / సహజ శరీరం and అమరత్వం terms require the same Critical-tier handling as the baseline’s పునరుత్థానం, since a subtly wrong rendering could import a moksha-adjacent disembodied-liberation reading contrary to Paul’s explicitly bodily resurrection theology.
  5. Gender-order passages (11:2-16; 14:34-35): శిరస్సు (head/headship) and మౌనంగా ఉండవలెను (women keep silence) are flagged High risk not chiefly for syncretism but for interpretive/pastoral sensitivity; render literally, avoid resolving the underlying exegetical debate through translation choice alone, and route to human theologian review.
  6. Consistency with Romans baseline confession: 1 Corinthians 12:3’s “Jesus is Lord” (యేసు ప్రభువు) must be rendered identically to Romans 10:9’s confession, per the Theological Consistency Rules already established in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md.

This glossary feeds directly into Phase 1 Step 2 (doctrine risk registry extension) and must be loaded alongside the baseline translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json before Phase 2 translation of any 1 Corinthians material begins.

Critical Risk Terms

Salvation

Approved rendering: రక్షణ
Transliteration: rakshana
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: మోక్షం, ముక్తి
Original: σωτηρία
Category: Salvation

Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly. Occurs in 1 Corinthians 1:18,21; 3:15; 5:5; 15:2. CRITICAL: never మోక్షం/ముక్తి; 15:2’s conditional clause (‘if you hold fast’) requires theologian handling so it does not read as salvation-by-works.

Resurrection

Approved rendering: పునరుత్థానం
Transliteration: punarutthānam
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Rejected alternatives: పునర్జన్మ
Original: ἀνάστασις
Category: Eschatology

Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly. Central subject of the entire core passage and chapter 15; CRITICAL, never పునర్జన్మ, applied to both Christ (15:4) and believers (15:12-58).

Lord

Approved rendering: ప్రభువు
Transliteration: prabhuvu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: స్వామి
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology

Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly. Occurs throughout, esp. 1, 8, 12, 15, 16. CRITICAL: 1 Corinthians 12:3’s confession ‘Jesus is Lord’ (యేసు ప్రభువు) must match Romans 10:9 verbatim per the Theological Consistency Rules.

Son Of God

Approved rendering: దేవుని కుమారుడు
Transliteration: Dēvuni Kumāruḍu
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: అవతారపురుషుడు
Original: υἱὸς θεοῦ
Category: Christology

Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly. Implicit Christological background assumed throughout the letter’s high Christology; full phrase required if referenced explicitly.

Messiah

Approved rendering: మెస్సీయ
Transliteration: Messīya
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Rejected alternatives: అవతారపురుషుడు
Original: Χριστός / מָשִׁיחַ
Category: Christology

Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly. Reserved in this curriculum for explicit OT-fulfillment contexts, functionally distinct from క్రీస్తు’s use as Jesus’ proper title/name throughout 1 Corinthians (see christ_title_name, Section B).

Jesus

Approved rendering: యేసు
Transliteration: Yēsu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Original: Ἰησοῦς / יֵשׁוּעַ
Category: Christology

Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly. Occurs throughout; the subject of the death-burial-resurrection creed in 15:3-8 and the confession of 12:3.

God

Approved rendering: దేవుడు
Transliteration: Dēvuḍu
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: భగవంతుడు
Original: θεός / אֱלֹהִים / יהוה
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly. Occurs throughout, including as source of wisdom (1:24-25), the Father to whom Christ subjects all things (15:28), and giver of victory (15:57). Never భగవంతుడు in doctrinally precise contexts.

Holy Spirit

Approved rendering: పరిశుద్ధాత్మ
Transliteration: pariśuddhātma
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: పరమాత్మ, పవిత్రాత్మ
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly. Occurs in 1 Corinthians 2, 3, 6, 12; never పరమాత్మ. Locked to పరిశుద్ధాత్మ (never పవిత్రాత్మ), consistent with baseline denominational lock.

Father

Approved rendering: తండ్రి
Transliteration: Tandri
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: సృష్టికర్త
Original: πατήρ
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly. Occurs in 1 Corinthians 1, 8, 15; invoked in the letter’s opening greeting and the eschatological climax of 15:24,28.

Christ Title Name

Approved rendering: క్రీస్తు
Transliteration: Krīstu
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Original: Χριστός
Category: Christology

New to this curriculum, but a universally established Telugu Bible form shared across Protestant and Catholic usage. Dominant Christological title-as-name across the letter; must remain functionally distinct from మెస్సీయ (reserved for explicit OT-fulfillment contexts) while denoting the identical unique figure. Consistent, exclusive use for Jesus required throughout.

Redemption Bought With A Price

Approved rendering: విమోచన
Transliteration: vimōchana
Doctrine: Redemption and Belonging to God
Rejected alternatives: స్వాతంత్ర్యం పొందుట
Original: ἀπολύτρωσις / ἠγοράσθητε τιμῆς
Category: Salvation

Occurs at 1:30, 6:19-20, 7:23. Must denote costly deliverance secured by Christ’s payment on the sinner’s behalf, never a merit-based release from a cosmic cycle — same forbidden-substitution logic as రక్షణ.

Idol

Approved rendering: విగ్రహం
Transliteration: vigrahaṁ
Doctrine: Christian Liberty and Idol Meat
Original: εἴδωλον
Category: Sin

8:4; 10:14-22; 12 (background). Names the same consecrated devotional images actively worshipped daily across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana (e.g. Tirupati). Highest live syncretism risk in the letter; human theologian review required for every occurrence, without exception.

Idolatry

Approved rendering: విగ్రహారాధన
Transliteration: vigrahārādhana
Doctrine: Idolatry and Exclusive Spiritual Loyalty
Original: εἰδωλολατρία
Category: Sin

10:7,14. Same collision tier as ‘idol’; requires human theologian review without exception given the live regional practice of image-worship, exemplified by Israel’s golden-calf warning.

Body And Blood

Approved rendering: శరీరం / రక్తం
Transliteration: śarīraṁ / raktaṁ
Doctrine: The Lord’s Supper
Original: σῶμα / αἷμα
Category: Sacraments

11:23-25. Must preserve real sacrificial/covenantal meaning without inviting confusion with unrelated ritual-offering/prasadam categories, and without flattening to a merely symbolic-only reading.

Love Agape

Approved rendering: ప్రేమ
Transliteration: prēma
Doctrine: Love as the Greater Way
Rejected alternatives: కామం
Original: ἀγάπη
Category: Love

Chapter 13 in full. Contemporary Telugu popular culture (especially cinema) overwhelmingly codes ప్రేమ as romantic love. Must be consistently framed as selfless, covenantal, patient, others-oriented agapē love — not romantic attraction. This is the curriculum’s central doctrine and requires full-passage (not merely term-by-term) theologian review.

Spiritual Body Natural Body

Approved rendering: ఆత్మసంబంధమైన శరీరం / సహజ శరీరం
Transliteration: ātma sambandhamaina śarīraṁ / sahaja śarīraṁ
Doctrine: Resurrection of Believers
Original: σῶμα πνευματικόν / σῶμα ψυχικόν
Category: Eschatology

15:44. Must NOT be read as implying the resurrection body is non-physical, or that ‘spirit’ merges into an impersonal universal Spirit at death — a possible confusion given regional ఆత్మ/పరమాత్మ concepts. Paul teaches a real, transformed, individually embodied, everlasting existence; requires the same Critical-tier handling as పునరుత్థానం.

High Risk Terms

Grace

Approved rendering: కృప
Transliteration: kṛpa
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: పుణ్యం, కర్మఫలం
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation

Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly. Occurs in 1 Corinthians 1, 3, 15, 16; central to the grace-and-labor paradox of 15:9-10 (Grace and Ministry doctrine).

Righteousness

Approved rendering: నీతి
Transliteration: nīti
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: ధర్మం
Original: δικαιοσύνη
Category: Salvation

Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly. Occurs in 1 Corinthians 1:30 and 6; one of four soteriological gifts Christ becomes to believers in 1:30.

Justification

Approved rendering: నీతిమంతులుగా తీర్చడం
Transliteration: nītimantulugā tīrchaḍam
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: క్షమాపణ పొందడం
Original: δικαίωσις
Category: Salvation

Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly. Occurs in 1 Corinthians 6:11 as part of the washed/sanctified/justified conversion triad.

Holy

Approved rendering: పరిశుద్ధ
Transliteration: pariśuddha
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: పవిత్ర, శుద్ధ
Original: ἅγιος
Category: Sanctification

Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly. Occurs in 1 Corinthians 1, 3, 6, 7; underlies ‘saints,’ ‘temple of God,’ and ‘Holy Spirit’ vocabulary throughout the letter. Locked over పవిత్ర.

Sanctification

Approved rendering: పరిశుద్ధపరచడం
Transliteration: pariśuddhaparachaḍam
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: శుద్ధీకరణ
Original: ἁγιασμός
Category: Sanctification

Original: κρίμα / κρίνω
Category: Church

Transliteration: Sātānu
Doctrine: Church Discipline and Holiness
Original: Σατανᾶς

Passover Typological

Category: Sin

8:1-13; 10:23-33. NEVER ప్రసాదం, the positive Hindu term for a deity’s blessed, returned offering (famously Tirupati’s laddu prasadam), which would invert Paul’s cautionary sense. Forbidden substitution of equal severity to the baseline’s మోక్షం/ముక్తి rule.

Transliteration: dayyamulu
Doctrine: Idolatry and Exclusive Spiritual Loyalty
Original: δαιμόνια

Transliteration: jñāna vākku / vijñāna vākku
Doctrine: Spiritual Gifts and Body of Christ
Original: λόγος σοφίας / λόγος γνώσεως
Category: Spiritual Gifts

12:8. Uses the curriculum-locked జ్ఞానం/విజ్ఞానం distinction; the wisdom-side compound carries the higher risk tier due to the σοφία/jñāna-mārga collision.

Workings Of Miracles Powers

Approved rendering: సామర్థ్య కార్యములు
Transliteration: sāmarthya kāryamulu
Doctrine: Spiritual Gifts and Body of Christ

Category: Spiritual Gifts

12:10,28-30; developed in ch.14. Must be carefully distinguished from ecstatic trance-speech associated with some regional folk/possession-based ritual contexts; the biblical gift is Spirit-given and orderly, not an uncontrolled trance phenomenon.

Transliteration: maraṇapu koṇḍi

Original: γάμος
Category: Marriage

Chapter 7. Marriage presented as good and God-given, not inferior to singleness, but not commanded of all.

Virgin Unmarried

Approved rendering: కన్య / అవివాహితులు
Transliteration: kanya / avivāhitulu
Doctrine: Marriage and Singleness
Original: παρθένος / ἄγαμος
Category: Marriage

7:8,25-38. Singleness commended as a valid, even advantageous, calling for undivided devotion; guard against reading అవివాహితులు through an ascetic-renunciate (sannyasa-adjacent) lens.

Slave Free

Approved rendering: దాసుడు / స్వతంత్రుడు
Transliteration: dāsuḍu / swatantruḍu
Doctrine: Christian Identity and Social Status
Original: δοῦλος / ἐλεύθερος
Category: Ethics

7:21-23; 9:19. దాసుడు shares a positive cross-religious devotional connotation (‘servant of God’), which lowers offense risk but requires contextual clarity that earthly social status does not determine spiritual standing before God.

One Flesh

Approved rendering: ఏక శరీరము
Transliteration: ēka śarīramu
Doctrine: Marriage and Singleness
Original: ἓν σῶμα
Category: Marriage

6:16-17. Standard marital-union imagery drawn from Genesis 2:24, applied also to sexual union’s misuse.

Doctrine: Apostolic Tradition and Authority
Original: Κηφᾶς / Πέτρος
Category: Proper Names

1:12; 3:22; 9:5; 15:5. Two established Telugu proper-name forms for the same apostle; Paul deliberately uses Κηφᾶς in several passages — do not silently normalize one form into the other within 1 Corinthians.

16:22. Transliterated Aramaic liturgical formula (‘Our Lord, come!’), preserved untranslated, parallel to the baseline’s అబ్బా treatment.

Holy Kiss

Approved rendering: పరిశుద్ధమైన అభివందనం
Transliteration: pariśuddhamaina abhivandanaṁ
Doctrine: Church Fellowship and Mutual Care
Rejected alternatives: ముద్దు
Original: φίλημα ἅγιον
Category: Fellowship

16:20. A cultural-adaptation question, not a doctrinal one, since kissing is not a customary Telugu greeting; translate literally, supply a cultural-context teaching note rather than substituting a local gesture.

Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
