Core Glossary
Core Glossary: 1 Corinthians — English → Telugu
Purpose
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing theological term identified in analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md, across the entire book of 1 Corinthians (chapters 1-16), for use in Phase 2 translation memory population. Terms already fixed in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json are marked Baseline — Reused and MUST use the exact recorded Telugu rendering; no deviation is permitted. Terms newly introduced by 1 Corinthians are marked New and carry a proposed risk tier for confirmation in the doctrine risk registry (Step 2).
Risk tiers follow the same framework as the baseline: Critical (human theologian review, absolute enforcement), High (human theologian review), Medium (native speaker review), Low (automated review).

Cross-Cutting Risk Notes for Phase 2
- Wisdom/Knowledge pair (జ్ఞానం / విజ్ఞానం): This curriculum locks σοφία → జ్ఞానం and γνῶσις → విజ్ఞానం as a distinct pair throughout 1 Corinthians (especially chapters 1-3, 8, 12-13). Any drift toward using జ్ఞానం for both concepts must be flagged.
- Idol vocabulary (విగ్రహం family): Chapters 8, 10, and 12 carry the curriculum’s single highest live syncretism risk, given active regional Hindu image-worship practice. All idol/idolatry/idol-food terms require human theologian review without exception, and ప్రసాదం is an absolute forbidden substitution for “food offered to idols.”
- Love (ప్రేమ) in chapter 13: Given Telugu cinema’s dominant romantic-love association with this word, chapter 13 as a whole should be flagged for theologian review of the full passage, not merely term-by-term.
- Resurrection-body vocabulary (ch.15): The ఆత్మసంబంధమైన శరీరం / సహజ శరీరం and అమరత్వం terms require the same Critical-tier handling as the baseline’s పునరుత్థానం, since a subtly wrong rendering could import a moksha-adjacent disembodied-liberation reading contrary to Paul’s explicitly bodily resurrection theology.
- Gender-order passages (11:2-16; 14:34-35): శిరస్సు (head/headship) and మౌనంగా ఉండవలెను (women keep silence) are flagged High risk not chiefly for syncretism but for interpretive/pastoral sensitivity; render literally, avoid resolving the underlying exegetical debate through translation choice alone, and route to human theologian review.
- Consistency with Romans baseline confession: 1 Corinthians 12:3’s “Jesus is Lord” (యేసు ప్రభువు) must be rendered identically to Romans 10:9’s confession, per the Theological Consistency Rules already established in
12_ai_translation_requirements.md.
This glossary feeds directly into Phase 1 Step 2 (doctrine risk registry extension) and must be loaded alongside the baseline translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json before Phase 2 translation of any 1 Corinthians material begins.

Transliteration: Krīstu
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Original: Χριστός
Category: Christology
New to this curriculum, but a universally established Telugu Bible form shared across Protestant and Catholic usage. 10:7,14. Same collision tier as ‘idol’; requires human theologian review without exception given the live regional practice of image-worship, exemplified by Israel’s golden-calf warning.
Body And Blood
Approved rendering: శరీరం / రక్తం
Transliteration: śarīraṁ / raktaṁ
Doctrine: The Lord’s Supper
Original: σῶμα / αἷμα
Category: Sacraments

Love Agape
Approved rendering: ప్రేమ
Transliteration: prēma
Doctrine: Love as the Greater Way
Rejected alternatives: కామం
Original: ἀγάπη
Category: Love
Chapter 13 in full. Contemporary Telugu popular culture (especially cinema) overwhelmingly codes ప్రేమ as romantic love. Must be consistently framed as selfless, covenantal, patient, others-oriented agapē love — not romantic attraction. This is the curriculum’s central doctrine and requires full-passage (not merely term-by-term) theologian review.
Spiritual Body Natural Body
Approved rendering: ఆత్మసంబంధమైన శరీరం / సహజ శరీరం
Transliteration: ātma sambandhamaina śarīraṁ / sahaja śarīraṁ
Doctrine: Resurrection of Believers
Original: σῶμα πνευματικόν / σῶμα ψυχικόν
Category: Eschatology
15:44. Must NOT be read as implying the resurrection body is non-physical, or that ‘spirit’ merges into an impersonal universal Spirit at death — a possible confusion given regional ఆత్మ/పరమాత్మ concepts. Paul teaches a real, transformed, individually embodied, everlasting existence; requires the same Critical-tier handling as పునరుత్థానం.

Transliteration: jñānam
Doctrine: Cross as Wisdom and Power

Original: σοφία
Category: Wisdom
Established Telugu Bible rendering for σοφία, but the same word names Advaita Vedanta’s jñāna-mārga (path of knowledge toward moksha) — a live philosophical framework in Telugu-speaking regions. Must always anchor to God’s wisdom revealed in the crucified Christ; never a generic path to enlightenment. Locked distinct from విజ్ఞానం (knowledge/gnōsis).

Approved rendering: మూఢత్వం
Transliteration: mūḍhatvam

Doctrine: God’s Hidden Wisdom Now Revealed
Rejected alternatives: మర్మము
Original: μυστήριον
Category: Wisdom
Occurs at 2:7; 4:1; 13:2; 15:51. Must be framed as truth God has now openly revealed to all believers, not esoteric teaching reserved for an initiated elite — a live distinction given regional guru-disciple hidden-knowledge traditions.
Natural Soulish Person
Approved rendering: సహజ మనుష్యుడు
Transliteration: sahaja manushyuḍu
Doctrine: God’s Hidden Wisdom Now Revealed

Doctrine: Christian Unity versus Factionalism
Rejected alternatives: పాపభరితమైన

Original: κρίμα / κρίνω
Category: Church

Transliteration: Sātānu
Doctrine: Church Discipline and Holiness
Original: Σατανᾶς
Category: Sin
5:5; 7:5. Personal, subordinate, already-defeated enemy under God’s sovereignty — never one pole of an equal-and-opposite cosmic dualism, a framework with some resonance in regional folk-religious thought.
Passover Typological

Transliteration: jñāna vākku / vijñāna vākku
Doctrine: Spiritual Gifts and Body of Christ
Original: λόγος σοφίας / λόγος γνώσεως
Category: Spiritual Gifts
12:8. Uses the curriculum-locked జ్ఞానం/విజ్ఞానం distinction; the wisdom-side compound carries the higher risk tier due to the σοφία/jñāna-mārga collision.

Approved rendering: సామర్థ్య కార్యములు
Transliteration: sāmarthya kāryamulu
Doctrine: Spiritual Gifts and Body of Christ
Rejected alternatives: శక్తి కార్యములు (FORBIDDEN)

Category: Spiritual Gifts
12:10,28-30; developed in ch.14. Must be carefully distinguished from ecstatic trance-speech associated with some regional folk/possession-based ritual contexts; the biblical gift is Spirit-given and orderly, not an uncontrolled trance phenomenon.

Rejected alternatives: దర్శనమిచ్చెను
Original: ὤφθη
