Core Glossary
Core Glossary — Colossians (Telugu)
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing theological term identified across Colossians 1–4 in 07_semantic_analysis.md. Terms already fixed in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json are marked (baseline — reuse exactly) and must never be altered. New terms proposed for the Colossians curriculum are marked (new) and carry full risk justification, ready for promotion into an updated translation_memory.json in a later pipeline step.
Risk tiers follow the baseline’s definitions exactly: Critical (human theologian review, every occurrence), High (human theologian review), Medium (native speaker review), Low (automated review sufficient).

Cross-Cutting Risk Note for Phase 2
Colossians introduces a second major syncretism-risk cluster beyond the salvation/rebirth vocabulary already flagged in the Romans baseline: divine fullness and embodiment (πλήρωμα/పరిపూర్ణత, θεότης/దేవత్వం, σωματικῶς/శరీరాకారంగా, κατοικέω/నివాసముండుట, εἰκών/స్వరూపం) and hidden/esoteric knowledge claims (μυστήριον/మర్మము, σοφία/జ్ఞానం, γνῶσις-ἐπίγνωσις/జ్ఞానం-పరిజ్ఞానం, στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου/మూలతత్త్వాలు). Both clusters sit unusually close to live Telugu religious vocabulary (Tirupati avatar theology; Vijayawada Shakta tradition; Vedantic/Samkhya philosophical categories) and require the same category of explicit theological guardrail notes the baseline established for రక్షణ, పునరుత్థానం, and శరీరధారణ. These should be carried forward into the doctrine risk registry and AI translation requirements documents in subsequent Phase 1 steps.
Critical Risk Terms
Messiah
Approved rendering: మెస్సీయ
Transliteration: Messīya
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Rejected alternatives: అవతారపురుషుడు
Inherited from Romans package. The unique OT-promised deliverer doctrine underlying Colossians’ dense use of క్రీస్తు as a title/name (see christ, below).
God
Approved rendering: దేవుడు
Transliteration: Dēvuḍu
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: భగవంతుడు
Original: θεός
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Never భగవంతుడు in doctrinally precise contexts. Used throughout Colossians; must be sharply distinguished from దేవత్వం (the abstract quality of deity, see below).
Jesus
Approved rendering: యేసు
Transliteration: Yēsu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Used at 1:1,3,4; 1:28; 3:17.
Lord
Approved rendering: ప్రభువు
Transliteration: prabhuvu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: స్వామి
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Colossians’ household-code section (3:17,18,20,22-24; 4:1,7,17) requires ప్రభువు to be reserved exclusively for Christ’s unique Lordship, with యజమానులు used for the earthly-master sense (κύριοι κατὰ σάρκα) so the two are never confused.
Son Of God
Approved rendering: దేవుని కుమారుడు
Transliteration: Dēvuni Kumāruḍu
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: అవతారపురుషుడు
Original: υἱὸς τῆς ἀγάπης αὐτοῦ (“his beloved Son”)
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Colossians 1:13 identifies this Son as ‘the Son he loves’ (τοῦ υἱοῦ τῆς ἀγάπης αὐτοῦ), into whose kingdom believers are transferred.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: పరిశుద్ధాత్మ
Transliteration: pariśuddhātma
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: పరమాత్మ, పవిత్రాత్మ
Original: πνεῦμα
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Never పరమాత్మ or పవిత్రాత్మ. Referenced at 1:8 as the source of the Colossians’ love.
Father
Approved rendering: తండ్రి
Transliteration: Tandri
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: సృష్టికర్త
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Never సృష్టికర్త as a substitute in this relational sense (used at 1:2,3,12; 3:17). Note: సృష్టికర్త IS the doctrinally correct word in the separate, non-relational compound image_of_the_creator (3:10) — context determines which divine title applies.
Incarnation
Approved rendering: శరీరధారణ
Transliteration: śarīradhāraṇa
Doctrine: Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: అవతారం
Original: σάρξ (concept; “body of his flesh,” 1:22; “bodily,” 2:9)
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Never అవతారం. Colossians states this doctrine with unusual explicitness (1:22 ‘body of his flesh’; 2:9 ‘bodily’; 2:11); the root underlies dwell_bodily below.
Resurrection
Approved rendering: పునరుత్థానం
Transliteration: punarutthānam
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Rejected alternatives: పునర్జన్మ
Original: ἀνάστασις / ἐγείρω
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Never పునర్జన్మ. The root underlies firstborn_from_the_dead and union_with_christ_death_resurrection below; Colossians’ ‘raised with him’ framing (2:12; 3:1) sharpens the risk of a rebirth-cycle misreading unless this root is retained consistently.
Christ
Approved rendering: క్రీస్తు
Transliteration: Krīstu
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Original: Χριστός
Category: Christology
New term (Colossians introduces exceptionally dense use of this title, functioning almost as a proper name in the ‘in Christ’ formula central to the letter’s theology — 1:1,3,4,24,27; 3:1,24; 4:12). Reuses the established Telugu Bible name form already fixed in the baseline’s transliteration standards (12_ai_translation_requirements.md), shared across Protestant and Catholic Telugu usage. The unique OT-promised deliverer, never one of the avatar-descents associated with Tirupati’s Venkateswara tradition.
Image Of God
Approved rendering: స్వరూపం
Transliteration: svarūpam
Doctrine: Supremacy of Christ over Creation
Rejected alternatives: ప్రతిమ, ప్రతిరూపం
Original: εἰκών
Category: Christology
Colossians 1:15. Established Telugu Bible term (Gen 1:26-27 pattern); risk of collision with the Hindu devotional idea of a deity’s svarūpa, one manifest form among several a god may assume. Must be taught as the unique, exact, unchanging representation of God’s one nature, never one form among many.
Firstborn Of Creation
Approved rendering: ఆదిసంభూతుడు
Transliteration: ādisambhūtuḍu
Doctrine: Supremacy of Christ over Creation
Rejected alternatives: మొదట పుట్టినవాడు
Original: πρωτότοκος πάσης κτίσεως
Category: Christology
Colossians 1:15. Established Telugu Bible rendering; must always be taught paired with 1:16 (‘for by him all things were created’) to block an Arian-adjacent ‘first created being’ misreading, with a live modern analogue in some non-Trinitarian teaching active in Telugu-speaking areas.
Firstborn From The Dead
Approved rendering: మృతులలో నుండి ఆదిసంభూతుడు
Transliteration: mr̥tulalō nuṇḍi ādisambhūtuḍu
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Original: πρωτότοκος ἐκ τῶν νεκρῶν
Category: Christology
Colossians 1:18. Must use పునరుత్థానం-family vocabulary in surrounding teaching, never పునర్జన్మ, so this is never read as ‘the first of many rebirths.‘
Fullness
Approved rendering: పరిపూర్ణత
Transliteration: paripūrṇata
Doctrine: Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Rejected alternatives: సంపూర్ణత
Original: πλήρωμα
Category: Christology
Colossians 1:19, 2:9. The totality of God’s own being dwelling in Christ alone; must never imply a divine essence distributed across multiple avatars or manifestations.
Dwell Bodily
Approved rendering: శరీరాకారంగా నివాసముండుట

Doctrine: Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Rejected alternatives: సందర్శించు-type verbs (temporary visitation)
Original: κατοικέω / σωματικῶς
Category: Christology
Colossians 1:19, 2:9. Permanence and bodily concreteness must both be preserved, since Hindu avatar theology (especially at Tirupati) typically describes temporary, purpose-limited divine descents, not permanent indwelling of the whole divine nature.
Deity
Approved rendering: దేవత్వం
Transliteration: dēvatvaṁ
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Original: θεότης
Category: Christology
Colossians 2:9. Abstract quality/essence of being God (θεότης), distinct from దేవుడు (God the Person). Reused from the doctrine registry’s naming convention (‘క్రీస్తు దేవత్వం’).

Transliteration: samādhānaparachaḍaṁ
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Rejected alternatives: ఒప్పందం చేయడం
Original: ἀποκαταλλάσσω

Redemption
Approved rendering: విమోచనం
Transliteration: vimōchanaṁ
Doctrine: Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins
Rejected alternatives: మోక్షం, ముక్తి
Original: ἀπολύτρωσις
Category: Salvation
Colossians 1:14. NEVER మోక్షం or ముక్తి, per the baseline’s Critical salvation warning applied here. A specific, price-paid release accomplished once by Christ, not liberation from a rebirth cycle. Locked exclusively for ἀπολύτρωσις across the curriculum.
Elemental Spirits
Approved rendering: లోకసంబంధమైన మూలతత్త్వాలు
Transliteration: lōkasambandhamaina mūlatattvālu
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Rejected alternatives: శక్తులు
Original: στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου
Category: False Teaching & Syncretism
Colossians 2:8,20. NEVER శక్తులు — carries strong divine-feminine-power associations from the region’s prominent Shakta tradition, which would suggest legitimate rival divine powers rather than defeated, subordinate elements.

Approved rendering: సమాధి చేయబడి, తిరిగి లేపబడి
Transliteration: samādhi ceyabaḍi, tirigi lēpabaḍi
Doctrine: Union with Christ
Original: συνθάπτω / συνεγείρω / συνηγέρθητε
Category: Union with Christ
Colossians 2:12-13; 3:1. The resurrection component must draw on the same root as the baseline’s Critical పునరుత్థానం, anchored to bodily, historical, one-time resurrection theology, never a repeatable cycle of spiritual death and rebirth.
Old Self
Approved rendering: పాత మనుష్యుడు
Transliteration: pāta manuṣyuḍu
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Original: παλαιὸς ἄνθρωπος
Category: Union with Christ
Colossians 3:9. A single, definitive, past-tense putting-off in union with Christ’s death; never language suggesting repeated cycles of dying and being reborn into successive lives.

Transliteration: nūtana manuṣyuḍu
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Original: νέος / καινὸς ἄνθρωπος
Category: Union with Christ
Colossians 3:10. Paired term to old_self; the ongoing ‘renewal’ that follows is a sanctification process within this single new identity, not a series of successive rebirths.
High Risk Terms
Grace
Approved rendering: కృప
Transliteration: kṛpa
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: పుణ్యం, కర్మఫలం
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. In Colossians, paired directly with speech ethics (4:6, ‘speech seasoned with salt… with grace’); guard against కృప being read as a generic politeness virtue detached from its unmerited-favor theological ground.

Transliteration: pariśuddha
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: పవిత్ర, శుద్ధ

Original: ἁγιασμός (concept; cf. ἁγίους… παραστῆσαι, 1:22)

Transliteration: sanghamu
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Rejected alternatives: దేవాలయం, సభ
Original: ἐκκλησία
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. Locked cross-denominational choice; in Colossians names Christ’s body under his headship (1:18,24) and the house-church network of 4:15-16. Never సభ or దేవాలయం.
Glory
Approved rendering: మహిమ
Transliteration: mahima
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: తేజస్సు
Original: δόξα
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Used of ‘the glory of this mystery’ and ‘Christ in you, the hope of glory’ (1:27), and believers’ future appearing with Christ ‘in glory’ (3:4).
Power Of God
Approved rendering: దేవుని సామర్థ్యం
Transliteration: Dēvuni Sāmarthyam
Doctrine: Power of God for Salvation
Rejected alternatives: శక్తి
Original: δύναμις
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Never శక్తి — Andhra Pradesh’s prominent Shakta tradition (Kanaka Durgamma, Vijayawada) makes శక్తి read as a distinct divine-feminine power. Used at 1:11, 1:29, 2:12.
Sin
Approved rendering: పాపం
Transliteration: pāpam
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Rejected alternatives: అధర్మం

Doctrine: Divine Calling
Rejected alternatives: ఆహ్వానం

Transliteration: Dēvuni Ērpāṭu
Doctrine: Effectual Calling
Rejected alternatives: విధి, కర్మ
Original: ἐκλεκτοί (“God’s chosen ones”)

Inherited from Romans package. Underlying doctrine-root for Colossians 3:12’s ‘God’s chosen ones’ (see elect_chosen_ones below for the adjectival form used in that verse).
Heavenly Authorities
Approved rendering: సింహాసనాలు, ప్రభుత్వాలు, ప్రధానులు, అధికారులు

Rejected alternatives: శక్తులు
Original: θρόνοι, κυριότητες, ἀρχαί, ἐξουσίαι
Category: Creation & Cosmology
Colossians 1:16, 2:10, 2:15. NEVER శక్తులు — Andhra Pradesh’s Shakta tradition (Kanaka Durgamma, Vijayawada) and folk cosmology (navagraha, guardian/territorial spirits) would read that as a parallel pantheon rather than Christ’s own defeated, subordinate creation. Fixed fourfold phrase; never abbreviated or paraphrased differently across lessons.
Holds Together
Approved rendering: నిలిచియున్నవి
Transliteration: nilichiyunnavi
Doctrine: Providence and the Sustaining Power of Christ
Original: συνέστηκεν
Category: Creation & Cosmology
Colossians 1:17. Must convey personal, purposive sustaining by the divine Person Christ (subject always explicit), not an impersonal Vedantic/Advaita ultimate ground-of-being.
Head
Approved rendering: శిరస్సు
Transliteration: śirassu
Doctrine: Christ as Head of the Church
Original: κεφαλή
Category: Church
Colossians 1:18, 2:19. Organic, life-giving, authoritative headship; must always be taught paired with body (శరీరం) so the metaphor does not collapse into a merely honorary/bureaucratic chairmanship.
Make Peace
Approved rendering: శాంతి కుదిర్చి
Transliteration: śānti kudirci
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Original: εἰρηνοποιήσας
Category: Reconciliation
Colossians 1:20. Built on the locked baseline శాంతి; retains the relational, God-with-humanity sense, not మనశ్శాంతి.
Wisdom
Approved rendering: జ్ఞానం
Transliteration: jñānaṁ
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Rejected alternatives: వివేకం
Original: σοφία
Category: False Teaching & Syncretism
Colossians 1:9,28; 2:3,23; 4:5. Heavy overlap with Vedantic/Samkhya jñāna (liberating gnosis); must be anchored firmly to knowing and obeying the revealed will of the personal God in Christ, never a self-dissolving insight.
Knowledge
Approved rendering: పరిజ్ఞానం
Transliteration: parijñānaṁ
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Original: γνῶσις / ἐπίγνωσις
Category: False Teaching & Syncretism
Colossians 1:6,9,10; 2:3; 3:10. Full, relational, revealed knowledge of God’s will; risk of merging with esoteric/gnosis-to-liberation frameworks familiar in the regional religious landscape.
Mystery
Approved rendering: మర్మము
Transliteration: marmamu
Doctrine: Mystery of Christ Revealed
Rejected alternatives: రహస్యం
Original: μυστήριον
Category: False Teaching & Syncretism
Colossians 1:26-27; 2:2; 4:3. Must be taught as the opposite of Telugu folk-religious గుప్త రహస్యాలు (hidden esoteric secrets for initiates): God’s mystery in Christ is now openly proclaimed to all, Jew and Gentile alike, never hoarded for a spiritual elite.
Circumcision
Approved rendering: సున్నతి
Transliteration: sunnati
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles
Original: περιτομή
Category: Covenant
Colossians 2:11. Established Telugu Bible term; Paul does not abolish the rite’s past covenant significance but declares its literal performance no longer required, its reality fulfilled spiritually in union with Christ.
Worship Of Angels
Approved rendering: దూతలను పూజించడం
Transliteration: dūtalanu pūjin̄caḍaṁ
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Rejected alternatives: దూతలను ఆరాధించడం
Original: θρησκεία τῶν ἀγγέλων
Category: False Teaching & Syncretism
Colossians 2:18. Deliberately uses పూజ, never ఆరాధన (reserved for true worship of God alone); the word choice itself places this misdirected devotion in the same illegitimate category as idol-worship. Must be stated explicitly in teaching notes, not left implicit.
Shadow
Approved rendering: నీడ
Transliteration: nīḍa
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Original: σκιά
Category: False Teaching & Syncretism
Colossians 2:17. Must be kept distinct from Advaita Vedanta’s māyā-illusion metaphysics; Paul’s contrast is historical-typological (OT type fulfilled in a real, historical Christ), not a claim that the material world is unreal.
Renewed
Approved rendering: నూతనపరచబడుతున్నాడు
Transliteration: nūtanaparachabaḍutunnāḍu
Doctrine: Sanctification and Holiness
Original: ἀνακαινούμενον
Category: Sanctification
Colossians 3:10. Present-continuous force must be preserved: an ongoing process following a completed, one-time putting-off/putting-on, never a repeated new beginning.
Image Of The Creator
Approved rendering: సృష్టికర్త స్వరూపం
Transliteration: sr̥ṣṭikarta svarūpaṁ
Doctrine: Sanctification and Holiness
Original: εἰκὼν τοῦ κτίσαντος
Category: Sanctification
Colossians 3:10. సృష్టికర్త (Creator) is doctrinally appropriate here as a descriptor of God’s creating role. Must be taught as distinct from Christ’s own unique, exclusive image in 1:15 — this is renewed humanity’s restored image, not Christ’s eternal deity-image.
Unity No Distinction
Approved rendering: గ్రీసుదేశస్థుడని, యూదుడని, దాసుడని, స్వతంత్రుడని బేధం లేదు
Transliteration: grīsudēśasthuḍani, yūduḍani, dāsuḍani, svatantruḍani bhēdaṁ lēdu
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles
Original: οὐκ ἔνι Ἕλλην καὶ Ἰουδαῖος… δοῦλος, ἐλεύθερος
Category: Covenant
Colossians 3:11. Retain full, unqualified force — no softening for social comfort; direct resonance for Telugu Christian communities descended from 19th-century mass movements seeking exactly this equality.
Humility
Approved rendering: వినయం
Transliteration: vinayaṁ
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New / Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Original: ταπεινοφροσύνη
Category: Sanctification
Colossians 2:18, 2:23 (CONDEMNED false, showy asceticism) vs. 3:12 (COMMENDED Christlike virtue). This single lexical item carries the letter’s widest evaluative swing; every occurrence requires a per-occurrence sense-flag in the segment cache before translation is finalized, so learners never read the letter as self-contradictory.
Submit
Approved rendering: లోబడు
Transliteration: lōbaḍu
Doctrine: Household Codes
Original: ὑποτάσσω
Category: Household Codes
Colossians 3:18. A voluntary, relational posture within Christian marriage ‘as is fitting in the Lord,’ paired immediately with the husband’s command to love (3:19) — never a claim about differing worth or a license for domination. Real pastoral misuse-risk given existing regional gender and caste hierarchies; never translate 3:18 as a standalone segment apart from 3:19.
Slaves Masters
Approved rendering: దాసులు / యజమానులు
Transliteration: dāsulu / yajamānulu
Doctrine: Household Codes
Original: δοῦλοι / κύριοι κατὰ σάρκα
Category: Household Codes
Colossians 3:22-4:1. Telugu Christianity’s largest established communities trace directly to 19th-century mass movements among Dalit (Madiga, Mala) communities specifically seeking liberation from oppressive social hierarchy. Requires explicit historical framing (first-century institution addressed pastorally, not divinely instituted) and must never be taught apart from its own internal correctives (న్యాయం మరియు సమానత్వం, 4:1).
Justice And Fairness
Approved rendering: న్యాయం మరియు సమానత్వం
Transliteration: nyāyaṁ mariyu samānatvaṁ
Doctrine: Household Codes
Original: τὸ δίκαιον καὶ τὴν ἰσότητα
Category: Household Codes
Colossians 4:1. The crucial balancing command to masters, given equal doctrinal weight to 3:22’s obedience instruction; సమానత్వం (equality/fairness) must be rendered with full force, never softened toward a vaguer ‘be good to them.‘
Domain Of Darkness
Approved rendering: చీకటి అధికారం
Transliteration: cīkaṭi adhikāraṁ
Doctrine: Deliverance from the Domain of Darkness
Original: ἐξουσία τοῦ σκότους
Category: Salvation
Colossians 1:13. Real spiritual dominion decisively broken by Christ; sensitive given active rural Telugu folk-belief in చేతబడి (black magic/curses) and malevolent spirits — teach without overstating occult drama or flattening into a merely moral metaphor.
Fill Up Afflictions
Approved rendering: క్రీస్తు శ్రమలలో కొదువైనదానిని పూర్తిచేయడం
Transliteration: Krīstu śramalalō kodvainadānini pūrticēyaḍaṁ
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Original: ἀνταναπληρῶ τὰ ὑστερήματα τῶν θλίψεων τοῦ Χριστοῦ
Category: Ministry & Mission
Colossians 1:24. Must be explicitly taught alongside a note that Christ’s atoning, reconciling death (1:20,22) is already complete and lacks nothing; Paul’s suffering is missional/pastoral participation in gospel affliction, never a supplement to the atonement’s sufficiency.
Present Holy Blameless
Approved rendering: పరిశుద్ధులుగా, నిర్దోషులుగా, నింద్యులు కానివారుగా అప్పగించడం
Transliteration: pariśuddhulugā, nirdōṣulugā, nindyulu kānivārugā appagin̄caḍaṁ

Transliteration: anniṭikaṇṭe mundu
Doctrine: Supremacy of Christ over Creation
Original: πρὸ πάντων
Category: Christology
Colossians 1:17. Explicit temporal/ontological preexistence, distinct from ఆదిసంభూతుడు’s rank-sense in 1:15 — the two must never be flattened into one idea.
Elect Chosen Ones
Approved rendering: దేవునిచే ఎన్నుకొనబడినవారు
Transliteration: dēvunicē ennukonabaḍinavāru
Doctrine: Effectual Calling and Election
Rejected alternatives: విధి, కర్మ
Colossians 3:12 (‘God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved’). Adjectival form built on the baseline’s ఏర్పాటు root; must convey God’s sovereign, personal choice, never విధి (impersonal fate) or కర్మ (karma).
Medium Risk Terms

Approved rendering: సువార్త
Transliteration: suvārta
Doctrine: Gospel
Rejected alternatives: వార్త
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Long-established Telugu Christian term, settled across every denominational tradition. In Colossians bound closely to Christ’s supremacy/fullness themes (1:5-6, 1:23, 1:28) rather than justification language; hold the term identical across curricula.

Transliteration: viswāsam
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: భక్తి
Original: πίστις
