Semantic Analysis
Semantic Analysis: 2 Peter (Full Book) — English → Telugu
Method and Scope
This document analyzes 2 Peter in the original Koine Greek across all three chapters, first to last, per the PRD Phase 1 Step 1 mandate. The core passage (2 Peter 1:16-21) receives full verse-by-verse treatment. Every other chapter receives a chapter section covering its load-bearing theological terms with the same analytical fields. Terms already present in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json are reused exactly as recorded there — they are marked [REUSE — Romans TM] below and not re-argued. New terms required for 2 Peter’s distinct vocabulary (false teachers, divine nature, the Day of the Lord, apostolic eyewitness testimony, the prophetic word) are analyzed in full and carried forward into 08_core_glossary.md.
Risk tiers (Critical/High/Medium/Low) follow the baseline’s definitions exactly:
- Critical: mistranslation destroys or alters essential doctrine.
- High: mistranslation risks significant theological confusion, syncretism, or cross-denominational inconsistency.
- Medium: mistranslation reduces clarity but preserves essential meaning.
- Low: minor imprecision only.
PART A — CORE PASSAGE: 2 Peter 1:16-21 (Verse-by-Verse)
2 Peter 1:16
“For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.”
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning in Context | Telugu Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| μῦθος (μύθοις) | mythos (mythois) | fable, invented story | contrasted with historical eyewitness fact; a fabricated religious tale | ”myths,” “fables,” “cleverly devised stories” | Peter explicitly denies the gospel is invented religious fiction — it rests on verified historical eyewitness experience | కల్పిత కథలు (kalpita kathalu, “invented/fabricated stories”) | Medium — must not read as merely “old stories” but as deliberately fabricated religious tales, since 2 Peter is drawing a sharp contrast with truth |
| σεσοφισμένος (σεσοφισμένοις) | sesophismenois | cleverly devised, skillfully contrived | crafted with rhetorical/philosophical sophistication to deceive | ”cleverly devised,” “skillfully invented” | Reinforces that the false alternative to the gospel is intellectually sophisticated, not merely naive | నేర్పుగా కల్పించిన (nērpugā kalpin̄china, “skillfully fabricated”) | Low-Medium |
| δύναμις | dynamis | power, might, capability | ranges from raw physical force to divine capability/authority | ”power,” “might” | Christ’s power, displayed proleptically at the Transfiguration, anticipating his full end-time authority at the Parousia | దైవ సామర్థ్యం / (ఆయన) సామర్థ్యం [REUSE — Romans TM root: సామర్థ్యం, from power_of_god] | High — reuse baseline rule: NEVER శక్తి (Shakta-tradition divine-feminine power); always సామర్థ్యం |
| παρουσία | parousia | arrival, presence, coming | a ruler’s official/royal arrival; in NT eschatology, Christ’s return in glory | ”coming,” “advent,” “presence,” “arrival” | The certain future return of Christ in glory — the central hope this whole letter defends against scoffers (see ch. 3) | రాకడ (rākaḍa) | Critical (new term) — see rationale below |
| ἐπόπτης (ἐπόπται) | epoptēs (epoptai) | one who observes firsthand, an overseer/spectator | eyewitness observer of a specific event, often used of witnesses to sacred mysteries in Greek religious usage | ”eyewitnesses,” “witnesses,” “observers” | Peter grounds apostolic authority in direct, physical, sensory experience of the Transfiguration — not secondhand report or vision alone | ప్రత్యక్ష సాక్షులు (pratyakṣa sākṣulu, “direct/firsthand witnesses”) | Medium — must convey firsthand physical witness, not merely “believers” or “those who heard about it” |
| μεγαλειότης | megaleiotēs | greatness, majesty, magnificence | splendor/greatness proper to royalty or deity | ”majesty,” “grandeur,” “glorious greatness” | The visible splendor of Christ’s divine glory disclosed at the Transfiguration | మహాత్మ్యం (mahātmyam) | Medium — distinct from మహిమ (doxa/glory, already baseline); keep the two terms distinguishable so learners do not collapse “majesty” (visible splendor) into the broader theological term “glory” |
PARAOUSIA rationale (Critical, new term): Telugu-speaking Andhra Pradesh sits in the shadow of Tirupati’s Venkateswara tradition, and popular Hindu eschatology (the future Kalki avatāra) anticipates a further divine descent within an ongoing cycle of avatars. “Christ’s coming” must never be absorbed into that pattern — it is the unique, historical, bodily return of the one who already came once in the flesh (శరీరధారణ, baseline Critical term), not one more avatar-descent in a series. రాకడ is the long-established Telugu Christian term for the Second Coming (as in “ప్రభువు రాకడ”) and should be retained, but every occurrence touching the Parousia must carry the same Critical-tier scrutiny as incarnation and resurrection in the Romans baseline, since it names the same doctrinal family (the unique, unrepeatable acts of the one true God in Christ) and faces the same live cultural collision.
2 Peter 1:17
“For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, ‘This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased’—“
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning in Context | Telugu Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| τιμή | timē | honor, value, price | esteem, worth, honor bestowed | ”honor,” “worth” | The Father publicly honors the Son at the Transfiguration | గౌరవం (gauravam) | Low |
| δόξα | doxa | glory, radiance, honor | God’s radiant honor and presence [REUSE — Romans TM: మహిమ] | “glory” | Christ receives divine glory directly from the Father — a Trinitarian moment | మహిమ [REUSE — Romans TM] | High (inherited tier) |
| θεός πατήρ | theos patēr | God the Father | — [REUSE — Romans TM: దేవుడు, తండ్రి] | “God the Father” | Identifies the source of the heavenly voice as the first Person of the Trinity | దేవుడు తండ్రి [REUSE — Romans TM] | Critical (inherited tier) |
| μεγαλοπρεπής δόξα | megaloprepēs doxa | fittingly-great glory, majestic splendor | a reverent periphrasis for God himself, avoiding direct utterance of the divine Name | ”the Majestic Glory,” “the Excellent Glory” | A title for God the Father as the source of the heavenly voice — one of the highest divine epithets in the NT | మహోన్నతమైన మహిమ (mahōnnatamaina mahima) | High (new term) — this is a direct divine title (a name-substitute for God himself); it must read unmistakably as naming the one true God, not as a generic honorific that could be applied to any exalted deity figure in the surrounding devotional vocabulary |
| υἱός (ὁ υἱός μου ὁ ἀγαπητός) | huios (ho huios mou ho agapētos) | son (my beloved son) | — [REUSE — Romans TM: దేవుని కుమారుడు, son_of_god] | “my Son,” “my beloved Son” | The Father’s direct verbal attestation of the Son’s unique, eternal identity, echoed from the Transfiguration accounts | నా ప్రియ కుమారుడు (built on baseline కుమారుడు) | Critical (inherited tier — Sonship of Christ) |
| εὐδοκέω (εὐδόκησα) | eudokēsa | to be well-pleased, to take delight in | settled divine approval/delight, not mere passive tolerance | ”I am well pleased,” “in whom I delight” | The Father’s active, delighted approval of the Son — foundational to the Son’s authority and mission | (నేను) ప్రీతిపొందాను / దేవుని ప్రీతి | Medium — must convey active delight/pleasure, not a weaker sense of “acceptance” or “approval” that could read as merely adequate |
2 Peter 1:18
“we ourselves heard this voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain.”
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning in Context | Telugu Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| φωνή | phōnē | voice, sound | an audible utterance, often of divine speech in Scripture | ”voice” | The audible, historical, verifiable voice of God the Father, heard by named eyewitnesses | స్వరం / వాక్కు | Low |
| οὐρανός (ἐξ οὐρανοῦ) | ex ouranou | from heaven | the dwelling-place of God; the source of divine revelation | ”from heaven” | Grounds the voice’s origin as directly divine, not human or angelic mediation | ఆకాశము నుండి / పరలోకము నుండి | Low |
| ἅγιον ὄρος | hagion oros | holy mountain | a place set apart by a manifestation of God’s presence [REUSE — Romans TM: పరిశుద్ధ] | “holy mountain” | The Mount of Transfiguration, sanctified by Christ’s revealed glory | పరిశుద్ధ పర్వతం [REUSE — Romans TM root] | Medium (inherited tier) |
2 Peter 1:19
“And we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts,“
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning in Context | Telugu Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| βεβαιότερος (βεβαιότερον) | bebaioteros | firmer, more certain/confirmed | legally or evidentially secure; unshakeable certainty | ”more sure,” “more fully confirmed,” “confirmed” | The apostolic eyewitness experience (vv.16-18) confirms the reliability of OT prophetic Scripture — Scripture’s authority does not depend on the eyewitness event but is corroborated by it | మరి నిశ్చయమైన (mari niśchayamaina) | High (new term) — this is the doctrinal center of “The Reliability and Inspiration of Scripture”; must convey objective, evidentially-grounded certainty, not subjective religious conviction or feeling |
| προφητικὸς λόγος | prophētikos logos | prophetic word | the OT prophetic writings as a unified, authoritative body [partial reuse — Romans TM: ప్రవచనం] | “the prophetic word,” “the word of prophecy” | The OT Scriptures, understood as God’s own inspired, authoritative message (developed fully in vv.20-21) | ప్రవచన వచనం [builds on REUSE — Romans TM: ప్రవచనం] | High (inherited tier — Inspiration of Scripture) |
| προσέχω (προσέχοντες) | prosechontes | to pay close attention to, take heed | attentive, sustained focus, often with a sense of dependence | ”paying attention,” “taking heed” | Believers are to depend on Scripture as their guide, especially amid darkness/deception (developed in ch. 2-3) | శ్రద్ధగా చూడటం | Low |
| λύχνος | lychnos | lamp | a household oil lamp providing limited, localized light | ”lamp,” “light” | Scripture is a real but partial light — sufficient for the present dark age, until the fuller light of Christ’s return | దీపం | Low |
| αὐχμηρὸς τόπος | auchmēros topos | dark, murky, dismal place | a place of gloom, dryness, or squalor | ”dark place,” “dismal place” | Describes the present fallen age as a place of moral and spiritual darkness | చీకటి స్థలం | Low |
| ἡμέρα διαυγάσῃ | hēmera diaugasē | the day dawns/shines through | the breaking of full daylight | ”the day dawns” | Points to the full clarity/consummation that will come with Christ’s return | పగలు ఉదయించు వరకు | Low |
| φωσφόρος | phōsphoros | light-bearer, morning star | the planet Venus as it rises before dawn; used as a title for Christ elsewhere in the NT (cf. Rev 22:16, “bright morning star”) | “morning star,” “day star” | Christ himself, or the full dawning of his revealed truth in believers’ hearts | వేకువ చుక్క (vēkuva chukka) | Medium — Telugu astrological tradition (jyotiṣa) also names the planet Venus (శుక్రుడు) as a significant deity-associated graha; the rendering must be anchored clearly to the Christ-as-dawning-light image in context and not left to stand alone as a bare astronomical/astrological reference |
2 Peter 1:20
“knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation.”
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning in Context | Telugu Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| προφητεία γραφῆς | prophēteia graphēs | prophecy of Scripture | the OT prophetic writings as inspired texts [REUSE — Romans TM: ప్రవచనం] | “prophecy of Scripture,” “Scripture’s prophecy” | Reasserts that OT prophecy is not human literary invention | లేఖనముల ప్రవచనం [builds on REUSE] | High (inherited tier) |
| ἐπίλυσις (ἰδίας ἐπιλύσεως) | idias epilyseōs | one’s own interpretation/release/unfolding | the act of a single individual “unlocking” a text’s meaning by private ingenuity | ”one’s own interpretation,” “private interpretation” | Denies that Scripture’s meaning or origin rests on a human interpreter’s private insight — it is God-given, not humanly generated | స్వంత వివరణ (svanta vivaraṇa) | High (new term) — must be distinguished clearly from Scripture’s later interpretation by teachers (a legitimate and necessary task); the verse addresses the origin of prophecy (v.21 clarifies this), not a prohibition on all biblical interpretation. Mistranslation risks either (a) implying Scripture cannot be taught/explained at all, or (b) collapsing origin and interpretation into one concept |
2 Peter 1:21
“For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.”
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning in Context | Telugu Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| θέλημα ἀνθρώπου | thelēma anthrōpou | will of man | human intention/initiative as the source of an act | ”will of man,” “human will” | Explicitly denies human initiative as the origin of prophecy | మానవుని ఇచ్చ | Low-Medium |
| φέρω (φερόμενοι / ἠνέχθη) | pheromenoi / ēnechthē | to be carried, borne along | the image of a ship carried by wind, or cargo borne by a bearer — motion caused by an outside force, not self-propulsion | ”carried along,” “moved,” “borne,” “impelled” | The Holy Spirit is the active, moving cause of Scripture’s production; human authors were genuinely active writers yet Spirit-directed, not autonomous | నడిపించబడి (naḍipin̄chabaḍi, “being carried/led along”) | Critical (new term) — this is the doctrinal core of “The Reliability and Inspiration of Scripture.” The rendering must preserve both truths simultaneously: (1) the Holy Spirit is the decisive moving cause (ruling out any picture of Scripture as a merely human religious text), and (2) genuine human authors really spoke (ruling out mechanical dictation that erases human personality/style). A term implying passive possession/trance (as in some regional oracular or spirit-possession practices, e.g. āvēśam) must be avoided — the image is a bearer carrying a person toward a destination, not a spirit displacing human consciousness |
| πνεῦμα ἅγιον | pneuma hagion | Holy Spirit | — [REUSE — Romans TM: పరిశుద్ధాత్మ] | “Holy Spirit” | The divine Person who moved the human authors of Scripture | పరిశుద్ధాత్మ [REUSE — Romans TM] | Critical (inherited tier) |
| λαλέω (ἐλάλησαν) | elalēsan | to speak | ordinary verb for speech, here of prophetic utterance | ”spoke,” “uttered” | Human prophets genuinely spoke — real human agency operating under divine direction | పలికారు / మాటలాడారు | Low |
| ἀπὸ θεοῦ | apo theou | from God | source/origin [REUSE — Romans TM: దేవుడు] | “from God” | Identifies God as the ultimate source behind the human speakers | దేవుని నుండి | High (inherited tier) |
PART B — CHAPTER-BY-CHAPTER STUDY OF THE WHOLE BOOK
Chapter 1 (verses 1-15; vv.16-21 covered above as core passage)
2 Peter 1:1-15 introduces the letter’s greeting, the call to grow in Christian virtue, and Peter’s approaching death — establishing several load-bearing terms not covered in the core passage.
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning in Context | Telugu Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| δοῦλος | doulos | slave, bondservant | one wholly owned by and obligated to a master; NT usage reframes this as a position of honor in service to Christ | ”servant,” “slave,” “bondservant” | Peter identifies himself first as Christ’s owned servant, before his apostolic title — humility undergirding authority | దాసుడు (dāsuḍu) | Medium (new term) — దాసుడు is also the standard self-designation used by Telugu Vaishnava bhakti poets (e.g., Annamayya) describing devotee-status before a chosen deity. This resonance can serve as a helpful evangelistic bridge, but the curriculum must retain the specific NT sense of purchased ownership by Christ (cf. σωτήρ below), not a generic devotional self-abasement interchangeable across deities |
| ἀπόστολος | apostolos | apostle | — [REUSE — Romans TM: అపొస్తలుడు] | “apostle” | Peter’s delegated, authoritative commission | అపొస్తలుడు [REUSE — Romans TM] | Medium (inherited tier) |
| ἰσότιμος (ἰσότιμον) πίστις | isotimon pistin | faith of equal value/standing | faith held in common, without rank distinction among believers [builds on REUSE — Romans TM: విశ్వాసం] | “a faith of equal standing,” “as precious a faith” | All believers — regardless of background — share identical standing before God through faith | సమాన విలువగల విశ్వాసం | Medium — positive doctrinal resonance (no caste/rank hierarchy in the faith received), echoing the Romans baseline’s “universal_scope_of_gospel” doctrine; must be translated without softening the equality claim |
| δικαιοσύνη | dikaiosynē | righteousness | — [REUSE — Romans TM: నీతి] | “righteousness” | Right standing granted by God and Christ, the basis of the “equal” faith just mentioned | నీతి [REUSE — Romans TM] | High (inherited tier) |
| σωτήρ | sōtēr | savior, deliverer | one who rescues/delivers from mortal danger or destruction | ”Savior” | A title for Jesus Christ used repeatedly through 2 Peter (1:1, 1:11, 2:20, 3:2, 3:18) — far more frequent here than in Romans | రక్షకుడు (rakshakuḍu) | Critical (new term) — built directly on the baseline’s Critical-tier రక్షణ (salvation). Must never be rendered with a title suggesting a guru or avatar who grants మోక్షం/ముక్తి; రక్షకుడు (deliverer) keeps the same deliverance-frame as రక్షణ |
| χάρις, εἰρήνη | charis, eirēnē | grace, peace | — [REUSE — Romans TM: కృప, శాంతి] | “grace and peace” | Standard apostolic greeting, doctrinally loaded | కృప, శాంతి [REUSE — Romans TM] | High / Medium (inherited tiers) |
| ἐπίγνωσις | epignōsis | full/exact knowledge | a fuller, more precise or experiential knowledge than γνῶσις; relational knowledge of a person | ”knowledge,” “full knowledge” | The growing, relational knowledge of God and Christ through which grace and peace multiply (1:2), and by which false teachers are known to have fallen away (2:20) | పరిజ్ఞానం (parijñānam) | High (new term) — Telugu religious vocabulary carries a strong philosophical tradition around జ్ఞానం/knowledge as a path to liberation (jñāna mārga in Advaita Vedanta, where true knowledge itself dissolves the self into Brahman). ఎపిగ్నోసిస్ must be anchored as relational, revealed knowledge of the personal God/Christ that grows through virtue and Scripture, never an impersonal, self-dissolving mystical insight |
| θεία δύναμις | theia dynamis | divine power | — [builds on REUSE — Romans TM root: సామర్థ్యం] | “divine power” | God’s power that grants “all things necessary for life and godliness” (1:3) | దైవ సామర్థ్యం | High (inherited tier — never శక్తి) |
| ἀρετή | aretē | virtue, excellence, moral goodness | moral excellence, often civic/ethical virtue in Greco-Roman usage; in NT usage, God’s own excellence (1:3) and a believer’s Spirit-produced excellence (1:5) | “virtue,” “excellence,” “moral excellence” | Central term for the doctrine “Growing in Christian Virtue” — the first link in the virtue chain of 1:5-7 | సద్గుణం (sadguṇam) | High (new term) — the root గుణ (guṇa) carries heavy weight in Hindu philosophy (Samkhya’s three guṇas: sattva, rajas, tamas, understood as impersonal material qualities that bind or free the self). సద్గుణం must be anchored as Spirit-produced moral excellence flowing from relationship with Christ, not the cultivation or balancing of impersonal cosmic qualities |
| θεία φύσις / κοινωνοί | theias physeōs koinōnoi | partakers of the divine nature | sharing/participating in a nature not one’s own by birth | ”partakers of the divine nature,” “sharers in God’s own nature” | Believers, through God’s promises, come to share in God’s moral and immortal qualities (holiness, incorruptibility, love) — NOT ontological identity or absorption into the divine essence | దైవ స్వభావంలో పాలిభాగస్థులు (daiva swabhāvamlō pālibhāgasthulu) | Critical (new doctrine, highest-caution term in this book) — see extended rationale below |
| φθορά | phthora | corruption, decay, ruin | moral corruption; also physical decay/death | ”corruption,” “decay” | The moral decay/corruption in the world produced by desire (ἐπιθυμία), from which believers escape through the divine promises | క్షయం (kṣayam) | High — must be read as moral and relational corruption/ruin, not merely biological decay, and must not be confused with a cyclical or karmic notion of decline within an ongoing cosmic cycle |
| ἐπιθυμία | epithymia | desire, craving, lust | strong appetite, usually negative in NT moral usage | ”desire,” “lust,” “craving” | The corrupting force at work “in the world,” contrasted with divine power/promises | దురాశ (durāśa) | Medium |
| ἐγκράτεια | egkrateia | self-control, self-mastery | disciplined restraint of impulse/appetite | ”self-control,” “temperance” | A link in the virtue chain (1:6) — Spirit-empowered restraint, not self-achieved ascetic mastery | ఆత్మనిగ్రహం (ātmanigraham) | High — closely parallels Hindu/Jain ascetic self-restraint (indriya-nigraha, tapas) pursued as a merit-earning discipline toward liberation; must be anchored as fruit growing out of the faith and virtue already given (1:5), not a separate merit-generating discipline |
| ὑπομονή | hypomonē | patient endurance, perseverance | steadfastness under trial or delay | ”endurance,” “perseverance,” “patience” | A link in the virtue chain (1:6) — human perseverance in trial, to be distinguished from God’s own μακροθυμία (ch. 3) | సహనం (sahanam) | Medium — keep terminologically distinct from దీర్ఘశాంతం (God’s patience, ch. 3) so learners do not conflate a human virtue with a divine attribute |
| εὐσέβεια | eusebeia | godliness, piety, reverence toward God | reverent, worshipful devotion oriented rightly toward deity | ”godliness,” “piety,” “devotion” | A link in the virtue chain (1:6-7); also names the godly conduct expected while awaiting the Day of the Lord (3:11) | దైవభక్తి (daiva-bhakti) | High — unlike విశ్వాసం (faith), where భక్తి was rejected in the baseline for carrying generic devotional-path connotations, εὐσέβεια genuinely denotes reverent devotion/piety, and దైవభక్తి is the long-established Telugu Christian rendering. The needed clarification: this is devotion directed exclusively to the one true God through Christ, not one bhakti-mārga among several equally valid paths to liberation |
| φιλαδελφία | philadelphia | brotherly love, love of the family of faith | affection proper to blood siblings, extended to the family of believers | ”brotherly kindness,” “brotherly love” | A link in the virtue chain (1:7) — love within the believing community | సహోదర ప్రేమ (sahōdara prēma) | Low |
| ἀγάπη | agapē | love | selfless, willing love, the term’s NT usage centers it on God’s own character and self-giving love | ”love” | The capstone virtue of the chain (1:7), and the goal toward which all the others build | ప్రేమ (prēma) | Low — well-established, uncontested term; new addition to glossary since absent from the Romans baseline term list |
| καθαρισμός | katharismos | cleansing, purification | ritual or moral removal of impurity | ”cleansing,” “purging,” “purification” | Forgetting one’s past forgiveness/cleansing from sin (1:9) — moral cleansing already accomplished, distinct from ongoing sanctification | శుద్ధీకరణ (śuddhīkaraṇa) | Medium — distinguish carefully from పరిశుద్ధపరచడం (sanctification, baseline High term, the Spirit’s ongoing work); here the sense is a completed past cleansing from sin’s guilt |
| κλῆσις, ἐκλογή | klēsis, eklogē | calling, election | — [REUSE — Romans TM: పిలుపు, దేవుని ఏర్పాటు] | “calling and election” | Believers are urged to “confirm” (make sure) their calling and election through virtue (1:10) | పిలుపు, దేవుని ఏర్పాటు [REUSE — Romans TM] | High (inherited tier) |
| βασιλεία αἰώνιος | basileia aiōnios | eternal kingdom | — [builds on REUSE — Romans TM: దేవుని రాజ్యం] | “eternal kingdom” | The everlasting kingdom of Christ, entrance into which is richly supplied to the one who grows in virtue | నిత్య రాజ్యం | Medium (inherited tier) |
| σκήνωμα | skēnōma | tent, tabernacle | temporary dwelling; used metaphorically of the body as a temporary “tent” for the soul | ”body” (lit. “tent”), “earthly dwelling” | Peter’s body, soon to be laid aside in death (1:13-14) | శరీరం (గుడారం అనే రూపకం) | Medium — the tent-image echoes OT tabernacle theology; a flat rendering as merely “body” loses the poetic resonance, but an overly literal “tent” may confuse readers unfamiliar with the metaphor; a brief explanatory gloss is advisable |
| ἔξοδος | exodos | departure, exit, way out | a going-out; used in the NT of Christ’s “departure” at the Transfiguration (Luke 9:31) and here of Peter’s death | ”departure,” “exodus” | Peter’s approaching death, framed with the same word used for Israel’s Exodus and Christ’s own “departure” — death as a purposeful, God-ordained “going out,” not annihilation | నిర్యాణం (niryāṇam) | Medium — carries positive theological resonance (echoing Exodus deliverance) that should be preserved rather than flattened to a generic word for “death” |
Chapter 2 (verses 1-22)
Chapter 2 is devoted almost entirely to the doctrine of “False Teachers and Their Judgment,” using vivid OT judgment examples (fallen angels, the Flood, Sodom and Gomorrah) as precedent for the certain judgment of false teachers.
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning in Context | Telugu Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ψευδοδιδάσκαλος / ψευδοπροφήτης | pseudodidaskalos / pseudoprophētēs | false teacher / false prophet | one who teaches/prophesies falsely, whether from error or deliberate deception; NT usage in this context implies deliberate, destructive deception | ”false teachers,” “false prophets” | The chapter’s central subject — teachers within the believing community who deny Christ and lead others into destructive error [builds on REUSE — Romans TM: ప్రవక్త] | అబద్ధ బోధకులు / అబద్ధ ప్రవక్తలు | High (new term) — must convey deliberate, destructive deception leading toward ruin, not merely honest theological disagreement or doctrinal immaturity |
| αἵρεσις (αἱρέσεις ἀπωλείας) | haireseis apōleias | destructive sects/factions, heresies of destruction | a chosen party/faction; in NT usage, a divisive teaching that leads away from apostolic truth | ”destructive heresies,” “damnable heresies,” “divisive sects” | False teaching that fractures the church and leads to ruin | వినాశకరమైన మతభేదాలు | Medium |
| ἀπώλεια | apōleia | destruction, ruin, perdition | final, ruinous loss — of life, of standing, or (in NT eschatological usage) of eternal destiny | ”destruction,” “perdition,” “ruin” | The certain, final outcome awaiting false teachers and those who follow them (2:1, 2:3, 3:7, 3:16) | నాశనం (nāśanam) | High — must communicate a final, personal, eternal ruin under God’s judgment, not an impersonal dissolution/extinguishing of the self resembling nirvāṇa-type cessation concepts present in the wider regional religious vocabulary |
| δεσπότης | despotēs | master, absolute sovereign owner | one who owns/rules with total authority, historically a slave-owner’s title | ”Master,” “Sovereign Lord,” “Owner” | Christ’s absolute ownership of those he purchased — the false teachers “deny the Master who bought them” (2:1) | సర్వాధికారియైన ప్రభువు (builds on REUSE — Romans TM root ప్రభువు) | Medium — distinct emphasis from κύριος (ప్రభువు); δεσπότης stresses purchased ownership, reinforcing σωτήρ/రక్షకుడు above |
| κρίσις | krisis | judgment, verdict | a legal decision, a separating/discerning act; in NT eschatological usage, God’s final verdict | ”judgment,” “condemnation” | God’s certain judgment on false teachers, prefigured by the judgment of angels, the Flood, and Sodom | తీర్పు (tīrpu) | High (new term) — central to the doctrine “Day of the Lord and Final Judgment”; must convey a personal, forensic verdict from God, not an impersonal fate |
| ζόφος (τοῦ σκότους) | zophos | gloom, thick darkness | deep darkness, often of the netherworld/place of confinement for the condemned | ”gloom,” “chains of darkness,” “deepest darkness” | The place of confinement for fallen angels and false teachers awaiting judgment (2:4, 2:17) | అంధకారం (andhakāram) | High — see నరకం entry below for the related risk on the broader concept of “hell” |
| (concept) “hell” / place of judgment | — (νάρακం is the conventional Telugu gloss for Hades/Gehenna in established Telugu Bible usage) | the place/state of divine punishment | — | “hell,” “Hades,” “the abyss” | The certain, final place of judgment for the unrepentant, contrasted with temporary chastening | నరకం (naraka) — RETAIN as established Telugu Bible usage, with mandatory contextual clarification | High — నరకం is also the name of a specific realm within Hindu Puranic cosmology, understood there as one of several temporary punishment-realms preceding eventual rebirth, ruled by Yama, with graded levels for graded sins. This curriculum retains నరకం as the established, century-old Telugu Bible term (per the pipeline’s stated preference for established vocabulary over new coinage) but every occurrence requires accompanying context making clear this is a final, non-cyclical judgment tied to the one Day of the Lord (see ch. 3), not a temporary Puranic purgatorial realm within an ongoing rebirth cycle |
| βλασφημέω | blasphēmeō | to blaspheme, revile, speak abusively against | irreverent, contemptuous speech against what deserves honor (God, glorious beings, or authority) | “blaspheme,” “revile,” “slander” | False teachers arrogantly revile glorious beings/authorities they do not understand (2:10-12) | దూషించు / నిందించు | Medium |
| πλεονεξία | pleonexia | greed, covetousness | insatiable desire for gain, especially at others’ expense | ”greed,” “covetousness” | The moral corruption motivating false teachers (2:14) | దురాశ (reuse ch.1 root) | Low-Medium |
| ἐλευθερία | eleutheria | freedom, liberty | release from bondage/constraint, whether social, legal, or moral | ”freedom,” “liberty” | False teachers falsely promise “freedom” while themselves enslaved to corruption (2:19) — a bitter irony | స్వాతంత్ర్యం (svātantryam) | Medium-High — must avoid విముక్తి-family vocabulary, which in the regional religious register evokes liberation from the rebirth cycle (paralleling the baseline’s రక్షణ-vs-మోక్షం distinction); స్వాతంత్ర్యం (ordinary civic/personal freedom) keeps this clear of that collision |
| φθαρτός δουλεία (δοῦλοι τῆς φθορᾶς) | douloi tēs phthoras | slaves of corruption | bound, owned servitude to moral decay [builds on REUSE roots: దాసుడు, క్షయం] | “slaves of corruption” | The false teachers’ actual condition, opposite of the freedom they promise | క్షయానికి దాసులు | Medium (inherited tiers) |
| ἐπίγνωσις (2:20) | epignōsis | full knowledge | — [builds on ch.1 term: పరిజ్ఞానం] | “the knowledge of the Lord and Savior” | Having once known Christ truly and then fallen away — a severe warning about apostasy following genuine exposure to the gospel | పరిజ్ఞానం (reuse ch.1) | High (inherited tier) |
| παροιμία (“dog returns to its vomit”) | paroimia | proverb, figurative saying | a traditional proverbial image used to illustrate a moral point | ”proverb,” “saying” | A vivid OT-rooted proverb (cf. Proverbs 26:11) illustrating the self-destructive folly of returning to old corruption after tasting deliverance | సామెత (proverbial image, translate literally with cultural sensitivity to its vividness) | Low — retain the vivid image; no major doctrinal risk, but note it may read as unusually blunt/earthy in formal register and should not be softened, since the bluntness is the rhetorical point |
Chapter 3 (verses 1-18)
Chapter 3 addresses scoffers who deny the Parousia, unpacks the doctrine of “The Certainty of Christ’s Return,” “The Day of the Lord and Final Judgment,” and “Patience of God’s Timing,” and closes with final exhortations to growth.
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning in Context | Telugu Rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἐμπαίκτης (ἐμπαῖκται) | empaiktēs | mocker, scoffer | one who ridicules/derides, especially sacred claims | ”scoffers,” “mockers” | Those who deny the Parousia by mocking its delay (3:3-4) — the chapter’s opening problem | ఎగతాళి చేసేవారు (egatāḷi chēsēvāru) | Medium (new term) — must convey deliberate mockery of a specific doctrinal claim (Christ’s coming), not generic skepticism |
| παρουσία (3:4) | parousia | coming | — [REUSE — established above in core passage: రాకడ] | “coming,” “promise of his coming” | The scoffers’ specific target of mockery — direct continuity with 1:16 | రాకడ [REUSE — this document] | Critical (established above) |
| κατακλυσμός | kataklysmos | flood, deluge | the Noahic Flood, used as historical precedent for future judgment by water and (by contrast) future judgment by fire | ”flood,” “deluge” | Precedent proving God has judged the world by catastrophe before and will again (3:5-6) | జలప్రవాహం | Low |
| ἡμέρα κυρίου | hēmera kyriou | Day of the Lord | the OT/NT designation for God’s decisive, climactic day of judgment and salvation [builds on REUSE roots — Romans TM: ప్రభువు] | “the Day of the Lord” | The certain, climactic, unrepeatable day of final judgment and cosmic renewal — the letter’s central eschatological claim | ప్రభువు దినము (prabhuvu dinamu) | Critical (new term) — names the specific, singular, once-for-all eschatological event; must never be softened into a vague future hope or absorbed into a cyclical cosmological framework (see μακροθυμία note below) |
| στοιχεῖα | stoicheia | elements, basic components | the fundamental constituent substances of the physical cosmos (in this context) | “elements” | The physical universe’s basic components will be dissolved in the Day of the Lord’s fire (3:10, 12) | మూలకములు (mūlakamulu) | Low |
| λύω (λυθήσεται) | lythēsetai | to be loosed, dissolved, destroyed | untying/dissolution, here of the created order itself | ”will be dissolved,” “will melt,” “will be destroyed” | The complete, decisive dissolution of the present cosmos — not gradual decay but a definitive divine act | కరిగిపోవు / నశించు | Low-Medium |
| μακροθυμία / μακροθυμέω | makrothymia / makrothymei | long-suffering, patience, forbearance | patience that endures provocation or delay without giving up on its purpose; distinct from ὑπομονή (endurance under trial) | “patience,” “longsuffering,” “forbearance” | God’s own patience in delaying the Day of the Lord, purposed toward giving people opportunity to repent (3:9, 15) — the doctrinal center of “Patience of God’s Timing” | దీర్ఘశాంతం (dīrghaśāntam) | High (new term) — Telugu Hindu cosmology (the yuga cycle: Satya, Treta, Dvapara, Kali; vast kalpa-scale cosmic ages) offers a ready but false frame for reading 3:8’s “a day is like a thousand years” as support for cyclical, near-endless cosmic ages. The doctrine must be anchored firmly to God’s personal patience aimed at a definite future repentance-deadline, within a linear history moving toward one final, unrepeatable Day — not a statement endorsing vast cyclical time in itself. Keep terminologically distinct from ఓర్పు/సహనం (ὑπομονή, human endurance, ch. 1) |
| μετάνοια | metanoia | change of mind, repentance | a fundamental reorientation of mind and life, not mere regret | ”repentance” | The purpose of God’s patience — giving space for repentance rather than reflecting inability or delay in fulfilling his promise (3:9) | మారుమనస్సు (māru manassu) | Medium — established Telugu Christian term; must retain the sense of decisive life-reorientation, not mere emotional regret |
| ἀσεβής | asebēs | ungodly, impious | lacking reverence toward God; opposite of εὐσέβεια | ”ungodly,” “irreverent” | Describes those who will be judged and destroyed at the Day of the Lord (3:7) | భక్తిహీనుడు (bhakti-hīnuḍu) — built as the negation of దైవభక్తి (ch.1 εὐσέβεια) | Medium (inherited pairing with εὐσέβεια) |
| καινοὺς οὐρανοὺς καὶ γῆν καινήν | kainous ouranous kai gēn kainēn | new heavens and a new earth | the promised, decisively renewed creation following the dissolution of the present cosmos | ”new heavens and a new earth” | The positive counterpart to cosmic dissolution — a real, physical, renewed creation in which righteousness dwells (3:13) | కొత్త ఆకాశములు మరియు కొత్త భూమి | Medium — must be read as a genuine future renewed physical creation, not a purely spiritual/otherworldly escape, and not a “next cycle” of the cosmos |
| σπουδάζω / σπεύδω (σπεύδοντας) | spoudazontes / speudontes | to be diligent/eager; to hasten | earnest eagerness; possibly also “hastening” the day through godly living | ”being diligent,” “hastening,” “eagerly awaiting” | Believers’ expectant, active posture toward the certain coming Day, living holy lives in light of it (3:11-12, 14) | ఆసక్తితో వేచియుండుట / త్వరపరచుట | Low-Medium |
| ἄσπιλος καὶ ἀμώμητος | aspiloi kai amōmētoi | spotless and blameless | free from moral blemish or fault | ”spotless and blameless” | The moral goal for believers awaiting the Day of the Lord (3:14) | నిష్కళంకులు మరియు నిందారహితులు | Low |
| δυσνόητος | dysnoēta | hard to understand | difficult, obscure in meaning without careful interpretation | ”hard to understand” | Peter’s own acknowledgment that some of Paul’s writings are difficult, prone to distortion by the “untaught and unstable” (3:16) | అర్థం చేసుకొనుటకు కష్టమైనవి | Low |
| στηριγμός / στηρίζω | stērigmos / stērizō | firmness, steadfastness / to make firm | stability that resists being dislodged | ”steadfastness,” “stability,” “firm standing” | The stable footing believers must guard, lest they be led astray “with the error of lawless people” and “fall from” it (3:17) | స్థిరత్వం (sthiratvam) | Low |
| πλάνη | planē | error, wandering, deception | a leading-astray, whether doctrinal or moral | ”error,” “deception” | The corrupting influence of “lawless people” threatening believers’ steadfastness (3:17) | మార్గభ్రష్టత / దోషం | Medium |
| αὐξάνω (αὐξάνετε) | auxanete | to grow, increase | organic, ongoing growth | ”grow” | The letter’s closing exhortation — grow in grace and in the [full] knowledge of Christ (3:18), directly recalling 1:2-8’s virtue chain and closing the letter’s inclusio | ఎదుగుతూ ఉండండి / వృద్ధి చెందండి | Low |
| χάρις καὶ γνῶσις | charis kai gnōsis | grace and knowledge | — [builds on REUSE — Romans TM: కృప; and ch.1 term: జ్ఞానం] | “grace and knowledge” | The twin, lifelong growth-goals of the Christian life, closing the letter | కృప మరియు జ్ఞానం | High (inherited tiers) |
| γνῶσις (distinct from ἐπίγνωσις) | gnōsis | knowledge | ordinary/general knowledge; one link in the virtue chain (1:5-6) and the closing exhortation (3:18) | “knowledge” | Growing, Spirit-given understanding of Christ, gained through Scripture and virtue — not an independent mystical path to self-realization | జ్ఞానం (jñānam) | High (new term) — జ్ఞానం is a philosophically loaded word in Telugu (jñāna-mārga in Advaita Vedanta: self-realizing knowledge that itself constitutes liberation, dissolving subject-object distinction into an impersonal Brahman). Must always be anchored to a personal object (“knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ”) and never left to stand as an abstract, self-sufficient spiritual attainment |
