Executive Summary

1 John 1–5 | Fulfulde Translation Requirements — Phase 1 Complete

Curriculum: 1 John 1–5 Core passage: 1 John 4:7–21 Destination language: Fulfulde (Fula) Depends on: baseline Romans Language Package (never contradicted, only extended)

Why It Matters

1 John is a doctrinally denser, higher-stakes translation project than Romans for this specific audience. Where Romans engages Islamic theology on grace, resurrection, and Christ’s Sonship, 1 John adds two full ontological “God is ___” claims (light, love), an explicit built-in doctrinal test for the incarnation that Islamic theology defines as shirk, a present-tense assurance-of-salvation claim that runs against deeds-weighing eschatology, and instructions to “test the spirits” that collide with active, real-world marabout/jinn-discernment practice. Every one of these is concentrated in or immediately around the core passage (4:7–21). Fulfulde’s thinner, dialect-fragmented Bible-translation tradition means most of this vocabulary must be built from scratch as descriptive compounds rather than drawn from an existing settled term — raising both the theological stakes and the review burden simultaneously.

Key Findings

  • 9 Critical-tier and 17 High-tier doctrines (26 of 36 tracked doctrine-occurrences) require mandatory human theologian review before Phase 2 deployment — no exceptions, per doctrine_risk_registry.json.
  • ~62 new theological terms were coined for this curriculum (vs. 26 baseline Romans terms reused exactly); of the new terms, 16 are Critical-risk and 22 are High-risk — meaning roughly 6 in 10 new terms carry mandatory-theologian-review weight, a materially higher ratio than Romans.
  • The single highest-priority risk in the entire curriculum is the ɓiɓɓe Alla (children of God, believers) vs. Ɓiɗɗo Alla (Son of God, Christ — baseline-reserved) distinction: Fulfulde’s singular/plural morphology of the same root makes this look like simple number agreement rather than a categorical theological boundary, handing a ready-made Tawhid objection to any critical reader if it fails anywhere.
  • The letter’s own explicit doctrinal test — confessing “Jesus Christ come in the flesh” (4:2–3) — is the textbook definition of shirk in Islamic theology, and 1 John makes affirming it the litmus test for distinguishing true from false teaching. This is not an incidental risk; it is the letter’s organizing argument.
  • “Test the spirits” (4:1–6) is flagged as the single highest practical/behavioral risk: an unglossed rendering could be read as authorizing jinn-exorcism or marabout-style spirit discernment rather than doctrinal discernment of teaching content.
  • Full-book coverage confirms every chapter contributes load-bearing doctrine: chs. 1–2 carry confession/cleansing/propitiation and the first antichrist polemic; ch. 3 carries the children-of-God/Son-of-God fence; ch. 4 (core passage) concentrates three of the nine Critical doctrines; ch. 5 carries assurance, testimony, and the closing idolatry warning.
  • A genuine textual-criticism risk was identified and fenced: the Comma Johanneum (1 John 5:7, KJV/late-manuscript-only) must never be reintroduced, since it is absent from the modern critical text underlying every surveyed Fulfulde NT translation and would create an avoidable, unnecessary consistency and credibility problem.
  • The Fulfulde Bible-translation landscape for 1 John remains unsettled and dialect-fragmented (Pular most mature; Nigeria/Cameroon Fulfulde variable; Maasina Fulfulde largely unconfirmed), and the YouVersion version ID for the target dialect is not yet confirmed — both are flagged as blocking items for resolution before Phase 2 publication, not silently assumed.

Risks

  • Doctrinal collapse risk: if the ɓiɓɓe Alla/Ɓiɗɗo Alla fence, the “God is light/love” ontological-statement structure, or the incarnation-confession wording drifts even slightly during Phase 2 segment processing, the letter’s core arguments become readable as compatible with — rather than in direct tension with — mainstream Fulani Islamic theology, defeating the curriculum’s purpose.
  • Practical/behavioral risk: “testing the spirits” and “anointing” vocabulary, if under-glossed, could be misapplied toward folk-Islamic spiritual practices (jinn-discernment, marabout-mediated barke) rather than taught as doctrinal discernment and universal Spirit-gifting respectively.
  • Consistency risk: with ~62 newly-coined terms and no settled reference Fulfulde Bible translation to anchor against, cross-document terminology drift is a higher risk here than for Romans; the escalation and cross-reference rules in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md are correspondingly stricter.
  • Unresolved dependency risk: the YouVersion version ID and the confirmed dialect-specific book name for “1 John” remain open items; publishing before these are resolved risks broken references and citation inconsistency across the curriculum.

Opportunities

  • 1 John’s family/lineage imagery (“children of God,” “seed of God,” “brother”) and its emphasis on sacrificial love for community resonate genuinely and positively with Pulaaku’s own values (lineage, hospitality, sacrificial courage) and with Islamic ukhuwwah (brotherhood) — real bridges to build teaching on, provided the boundary redefinition (love extending beyond ethnicity/religion, via new birth) is taught explicitly rather than assumed.
  • Existing shared vocabulary (Almasiihu, Ibliisa, sanamuuji, the dunya/akhira framework for “the world”) gives this curriculum genuine points of contact to build from, provided each is paired with explicit content-teaching per the comparative theology analysis.
  • The letter’s repeated present-tense assurance claims (5:11–13) offer a distinctive, compelling pastoral message precisely because they contrast so sharply with the deeds-weighing uncertainty many readers will already know well — a difference worth naming directly rather than softening.
  1. Treat every occurrence of giggol/Alla ko giggol, Ɓiɗɗo Alla/ɓiɓɓe Alla, Alla wontii neɗɗo, Christological jaɓde, and ɗaɓɓitde ruuhuuji as automatic Critical-tier human-theologian-review triggers in every Phase 2 segment, regardless of the segment’s otherwise-assigned risk tier.
  2. Confirm the target audience’s actual dialect and church-tradition Bible translation (Pular vs. Nigeria/Cameroon Fulfulde vs. Maasina Fulfulde) before finalizing book-name and YouVersion citation conventions; resolve the {VERSION_ID}/{VERSION_ABBR} placeholders before any publication.
  3. Commission dedicated native-speaker and theologian confirmation passes specifically for the ~62 newly-coined terms in assets/translation_memory.json, prioritizing the 16 Critical-risk items first.
  4. Ensure every Phase 2 teaching unit touching 1 John 4:1–6 and 4:2–3 includes the mandatory doctrinal gloss distinguishing these passages from jinn-discernment practice and from the shirk objection, respectively — never leave these to the translated text alone.
  5. Carry the Comma Johanneum exclusion rule (1 John 5:6–8) forward into every downstream teaching and apologetics document derived from this Language Package.
