Core Glossary
Core Glossary — 1 Thessalonians | English → Fulfulde
This glossary lists every load-bearing theological term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, spanning all five chapters of 1 Thessalonians. Terms marked REUSED are fixed in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json/bible_term_registry.json and MUST be used exactly as recorded there — no deviation permitted. Terms marked NEW are proposed here for the first time for this curriculum and must be added to translation_memory.json as provisional entries, flagged for native-speaker and theologian confirmation, before Phase 2 translation begins.

| assurance of salvation | (doctrine ref.) | Medium | 5 (5:9-10) | Distinct from Islamic deeds-weighing uncertainty |
| unity of jews and gentiles / universal scope | (doctrine ref.) | High | 3 (3:12, “toward all”) | Handle with sensitivity to Sahelian inter-ethnic tension without erasing Pulaaku identity |
New Terms Proposed for 1 Thessalonians (Provisional — Require Confirmation)
| Term (English) | Fulfulde | Transliteration | Risk | Doctrine | Chapters | Rationale / Key Collision | Rejected Alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| hope | yaakaare | yaakaare | High | Hope in Grief | 1, 4, 5 | Must be distinguished from Islamic hope-in-mercy held under deeds-weighing uncertainty; Romans/1 Thess hope is certain, grounded in Christ’s historical resurrection | none proposed; term is well-attested regionally, risk is theological framing not lexical choice |
| love (agapē) | yiɗde | yiɗde | Medium-High | Sanctification / Hope in Grief | 1, 3, 4 | Must exceed Pulaaku’s lineage/clan-bound loyalty; must extend “toward all” (3:12) and cross ethnic lines (4:9, philadelphia) | — |
| idols | sanamji | sanamji | Medium | (background to Sanctification) | 1 | Shared anti-idolatry vocabulary with Islam (shirk); risk is assuming rejection of idols equals full gospel content, missing the positive turn to God through Christ | — |
| wrath (of God) | tikkere Alla | tikkere Alla | High | The Day of the Lord | 1, 5 | Must state deliverance from wrath is through Christ specifically (1:10; 5:9), not a deeds-weighing calculus paralleling Islamic ghadab | hasara (never; misfortune/chance) |
| return of Christ / parousia | artal Almasiihu | artal Almasiihu | Critical | The Return of Christ | 2, 3, 4, 5 | Direct, specific collision with Islamic nuzul Isa doctrine (Isa’s return before Judgment Day, with an entirely different narrative: no death, defeats al-Dajjal, dies naturally, buried in Medina); must be explicitly contrasted, not merely translated | none; a single crystallized term does not yet exist in Fulfulde Christian literature |
| Day of the Lord | ñalaande Joom | ñalaande Joom | Critical | The Day of the Lord | 5 | Direct collision with Yawm al-Qiyāmah (Day of Judgment/Resurrection), a deeply elaborated Islamic doctrine (mizan, sirat); must state believers’ assured deliverance (5:9-10) against a deeds-weighing framework | — |
| sleep (death euphemism) | ɓe ɗaanii | ɓe ɗaanii | Medium | Resurrection of Believers / Hope in Grief | 4 | Must be understood as euphemism for real physical death, not literal sleep; gloss on first use | — |
| caught up / rapture | ɓamtugol | ɓamtugol | Critical | Resurrection of Believers / Return of Christ | 4 | Direct collision risk with Qur’an 4:158’s “Allah raised up (rafa’a) Isa” (understood as Jesus taken to heaven alive, bypassing death); must be explicitly distinguished as a different, future, corporate event for believers | — |
| archangel | malaaka mawɗo | malaaka mawɗo | High | Return of Christ / Day of the Lord | 4 | Shared “malaaka” vocabulary with Islamic angelology; trumpet-angel parallel with Israfil tradition | — |
| trumpet (of God) | buubdi Alla | buubdi Alla | High | Return of Christ / Day of the Lord | 4 | Vivid, specific surface parallel with Islamic nafkh al-sur (trumpet blast); highest-visibility collision image in the passage | — |
| meet the Lord (in the air) | hawrude e Joom ka weeyo | hawrude e Joom ka weeyo | Medium | Return of Christ | 4 | Technical term for ceremonial reception of a dignitary; use positively, resonates with Fulani honor-guest customs | — |
| brotherly love | giggol musiɓɓe | giggol musiɓɓe | Medium-High | Sanctification | 4 | Must extend across ethnic/clan lines beyond narrower Pulaaku fraternal solidarity | — |

| Satan | Sayɗaan | Sayɗaan | Low-Medium | (background) | 2, 3 | Shared figure with Islamic shaitan vocabulary; minor narrative differences, low risk | — |
| affliction / tribulation | tampere | tampere | Medium | Hope in Grief | 1, 3 | Distinguish from ordinary pastoralist hardship; specific to suffering for the gospel | — |
| grief / sorrow | sunaare | sunaare | Medium | Hope in Grief | 4 | Not an absolute prohibition on mourning; contrast is with hopeless grief specifically | — |
| establish / strengthen | tabitingol | tabitingol | Low-Medium | Sanctification | 3 | Extends existing tabit- root already used in baseline’s “assurance of salvation” doctrine name | — |
| blameless | ŋati walaa | ŋati walaa | Medium | Sanctification / Return of Christ | 2, 3, 5 | Descriptive “fault-none” compound; pairs with ceniiɗo/ceniinde | — |
| spirit / soul / body (tripartite) | ruuhu / wonkii / ɓalndu | ruuhu / wonkii / ɓalndu | High | Sanctification | 5 | Human “ruuhu” must never be confused with “Ruuhu Ceniiɗo” (Holy Spirit); parallel but differently-framed to Islamic ruh/nafs/jism anthropology oriented toward nafs-purification | — |
| quench (the Spirit) | boccude (Ruuhu Ceniiɗo) | boccude | Medium | Sanctification | 5 | Verb “to extinguish” (as fire); must convey resisting the Spirit’s work, not that the Spirit’s power itself is destructible | — |
| sons/children of light | ɓiɓɓe annoora | ɓiɓɓe annoora | Medium | The Day of the Lord | 5 | Positive contact via shared annoora/nur light vocabulary; anchor to identity in Christ specifically | — |

| holy kiss | jokkondiral ceniindi | jokkondiral ceniindi | Medium (doctrine) / High (cultural adaptation) | (church practice) | 5 | Literal kiss-greeting conflicts with Pulaaku semteende (modesty) norms; requires native-speaker guidance on culturally appropriate substitute | — |
| word of the Lord/God | Konngol Joom / Konngol Alla | Konngol Joom / Konngol Alla | Medium-High | Inspiration of Scripture (background) | 2, 4 | Ties to tahrif-doctrine caution already flagged in baseline for inspiration_of_scripture | — |

Enforcement Note
All NEW terms in this glossary must be written into translation_memory.json as provisional entries (with doctrine_risk, alternatives_rejected, and notes fields following the exact schema used in the baseline file) before any Phase 2 segment translation of 1 Thessalonians proceeds, per the baseline’s Translation Memory Load and Enforcement Instructions. Given the unusually dense concentration of Critical-risk eschatological collisions in this book (parousia, rapture, Day of the Lord — each with a specific, well-articulated competing Islamic doctrine), this curriculum should budget for a higher proportion of mandatory theologian review than the baseline Romans package required.
Critical Risk Terms
Grace
Approved rendering: Arjunde
Transliteration: arjunde
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: yurmeende (reserve for ‘mercy/compassion’ generally, not unmerited favor specifically), barke (blessing, avoid as a substitute)
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
CRITICAL: arjunde is Arabic-influenced vocabulary shared with Islamic usage, generally understood there as responsive to piety and good deeds. Inherited from Romans package. 1 Thessalonians 1:1 and 5:28 invoke grace in epistolary greetings; this book develops the grace-works antithesis less explicitly than Romans, but the baseline’s caution against a piety-responsive reading still governs every occurrence.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: Ruuhu Ceniiɗo
Transliteration: Ruuhu Ceniiɗo
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: ruuhu (never use alone), jinna (never use; a jinn/spirit being in Islamic and West African folk belief)
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Always used in full: at the gospel’s arrival (1:5-6), as the ground of sanctification (4:8), and as capable of being resisted (5:19). Especially critical at 5:23, where the human ruuhu (lower-case, unmarked) appears in the SAME verse and must never be visually or doctrinally confused with Ruuhu Ceniiɗo.
Resurrection
Approved rendering: immorde e maayde
Transliteration: immorde e maayde
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Rejected alternatives: immorde ka maayde (dialectal variant, confirm regionally)
Original: ἀνάστασις (vb. ἀνέστη / ἀναστήσονται)
Category: Eschatology
CRITICAL. Inherited from Romans package, extended here to a new sense: this book uses the phrase both for Christ’s own resurrection (1:10, 4:14, the baseline’s original anchor) AND, newly, for the future bodily resurrection of dead believers (4:16). The entire hope of 4:13-18 is a syllogism resting on Christ’s own historical resurrection as fact; the mainstream Sunni reading of Qur’an 4:157 (denying the crucifixion occurred at all) directly threatens this foundation and must be addressed plainly, not assumed uncontested.
Messiah
Approved rendering: Almasiihu
Transliteration: Almasiihu
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Original: Χριστός / מָשִׁיחַ
Category: Christology
CRITICAL. Inherited from Romans package. Underlies the title ‘Christ’ used throughout this letter alongside ‘Lord’ and ‘Jesus.’ Shared vocabulary with the Qur’anic Isa al-Masih title is especially high-stakes here given this book’s dense concentration of eschatological claims (return, resurrection, rapture) about this same title-bearer.
Salvation
Approved rendering: kisal
Transliteration: kisal
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: dancal (protection, never as a stand-alone substitute), aljanna (paradise, never as a stand-alone gloss for salvation itself)
Original: σωτηρία
Category: Salvation
CRITICAL. Inherited from Romans package. 5:8-10 is this book’s clearest statement of salvation’s basis in Christ’s finished substitutionary death (‘who died for us’) — stronger and more explicit than the baseline’s Romans 8 assurance passage; must be stated with full confidence, never hedged into a deeds-weighing model.
Christ
Approved rendering: Kiristu
Transliteration: Kiristu
Doctrine: Christology
Rejected alternatives: Almasiihu alone (reserved specifically for the fulfilled Messianic-title sense; Kiristu records the title’s own consistent transliterated form used throughout this letter)
Original: Χριστός
Category: Christology
NEW term for this curriculum; not a standalone baseline entry (Romans package used Almasiihu for the Messiah title and Yeesu for the personal name). Kiristu is fixed here as the standard transliteration for the title ‘Christ,’ used throughout this letter in compounds such as ‘Lord Jesus Christ’ (1:1) and standing alone (2:6; 4:16; 5:9). Complementary to, not a replacement for, Almasiihu or Yeesu. Provisional; confirm regional currency with native speakers and theologian before treating as final.
Return Of Christ Parousia
Approved rendering: artal Almasiihu
Transliteration: artal Almasiihu
Doctrine: The Return of Christ
Rejected alternatives: a transliterated Greek loan (e.g. ‘parusiya’), rejected as opaque and pedagogically unproductive, ‘presence’-only language (rejected; must convey a future, visible, bodily arrival, not an invisible presence — see Jehovah’s Witnesses caution below)
Original: παρουσία
Category: Eschatology
CRITICAL. NEW descriptive compound (artal, ‘return/coming back’ + Almasiihu); no crystallized single Fulfulde term exists. Recurs at 2:19, 3:13, 4:15, 5:23 as the letter’s central structural thread. Collides directly with: (1) mainstream Sunni nuzul Isa doctrine (Isa did not die, descends near Damascus, defeats al-Dajjal, dies naturally, buried in Medina beside Muhammad); (2) Ahmadiyya missionary literature, organizationally active in West Africa, teaching allegorical fulfillment in the movement’s founder rather than a future personal return; (3) Jehovah’s Witnesses’ Watchtower literature, which renders parousia as an invisible ‘presence’ beginning in 1914 rather than a visible future return. Every occurrence must be paired with explicit contrastive teaching naming these alternatives, never merely translated and left to stand. Mandatory theologian review at every occurrence.
Day Of The Lord
Approved rendering: ñalaande Joom
Transliteration: ñalaande Joom
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Original: ἡμέρα Κυρίου
Category: Eschatology
CRITICAL. NEW transparent native compound (5:1-11). Sits directly beside Yawm al-Qiyāmah (the Day of Resurrection/Judgment), one of the most elaborated and doctrinally central concepts in regional Islamic scholarship (mizan, the scales of deeds; sirat, the judgment bridge). Surface parallels — sudden, unexpected, cosmic, tied to resurrection and a trumpet — are extensive enough that this term risks full absorption into the reader’s existing framework unless the curriculum states explicitly, every time, that for believers already in Christ this day means deliverance already secured (5:9-10), not a pending deeds-weighing judgment. Recommend teaching as a fixed proper title (capitalized in materials) to give it comparable doctrinal weight to Yawm al-Qiyāmah in readers’ minds. Mandatory theologian review at every occurrence.
Rapture Caught Up
Approved rendering: ɓamtugol
Transliteration: ɓamtugol
Doctrine: The Rapture / Gathering of Believers
Rejected alternatives: a Greek-derived loanword transliteration, rejected as unrecognizable to readers and forfeiting the chance to teach the term’s meaning transparently
Original: ἁρπάζω (ἁρπαγησόμεθα)
Category: Eschatology
CRITICAL — single highest-risk term in this book. NEW theological compound (‘the lifting up,’ from ɓamt-, ‘to lift/raise up’) with no prior Christian-literature attestation in Fulfulde. 4:17, ‘caught up together… to meet the Lord in the air.’ Collides directly with Qur’an 4:158’s teaching that Allah ‘raised up’ (rafa’a) Isa to himself, understood in mainstream Sunni interpretation as Jesus taken to heaven alive, bypassing death and resurrection entirely. Readers risk assimilating ‘believers will be lifted up’ to that familiar Isa-was-raised-alive narrative rather than the distinct, future, corporate gathering of living AND resurrected believers to the returning Christ — note the 4:16-17 sequence (the dead rise FIRST, then the living are caught up), the reverse of the rafa’a narrative’s bypass-of-death. The two ‘raised up’ concepts must be explicitly distinguished by name in teaching, every occurrence. Mandatory theologian AND native-speaker review required before this rendering is treated as final.
Death Of Christ
Approved rendering: maayde Kiristu
Transliteration: maayde Kiristu
Doctrine: Resurrection of Believers (foundation)
Original: ἀπέθανεν (ἀποθνήσκω)
Category: Christology
CRITICAL. NEW descriptive term. 4:14, apethanen — the first half of the syllogism grounding the resurrection hope of believers (‘if we believe that Jesus died and rose, even so…’). Must be stated as a real, historical death, directly countering the mainstream Sunni reading of Qur’an 4:157 (denying the crucifixion occurred at all), exactly as flagged for resurrection in the baseline Romans package. If this foundation is denied, the entire comfort of 4:13-18 has no basis; this dependency must be made explicit in all teaching, never assumed as uncontested common ground.
High Risk Terms
Gospel
Approved rendering: Linjiila
Transliteration: Linjiila
Doctrine: Gospel
Rejected alternatives: kabaaru moƴƴo (acceptable as an explanatory gloss, ‘good news’)
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Salvation
Linjiila (from Arabic al-Injil via existing regional Bible translation work) is the term used in existing Fulfulde/Pular NT translations; recognition varies by dialect and by whether exposure has been Islamic (tahrif doctrine) or Christian. Inherited from Romans package. In 1 Thessalonians, the gospel’s arrival ‘in power’ (1:5) risks conflation with barke (marabout-mediated spiritual power); doole Alla language must be used for power in view, never barke.
Faith
Approved rendering: gomɗinal
Transliteration: gomɗinal
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: hoolaare (trust, acceptable as a supporting synonym)
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Thessalonians 4:14 (‘if we believe that Jesus died and rose’) requires the object of faith to remain explicit — this specific historical belief, not generic religious confession, which in many Fulfulde-speaking communities defaults to Islamic identity.
Righteousness
Approved rendering: peewal
Transliteration: peewal
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: nunɗal (fairness/justice, too civic)
Original: δικαίως (adv., cf. δικαιοσύνη)
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Low-frequency occurrence in this book (2:10, adverbial description of Paul’s ministry conduct); the baseline caution against reading this as moral achievement rather than right standing still governs any doctrinal exposition drawing on this verse.
Sanctification
Approved rendering: ceniinde
Transliteration: ceniinde
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: laaɓal (ritual/ceremonial purification, avoid as a substitute)
Original: ἁγιασμός
Category: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8 is this curriculum’s fullest single-passage exposition of sanctification’s embodied ethical content and should be reviewed as a unit; also anchors 3:13 and 5:23, structurally linking sanctification to the return of Christ.
Saints
Approved rendering: seniiɓe
Transliteration: seniiɓe
Doctrine: Sainthood
Original: ἅγιοι
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. 3:13, ‘with all his saints’ at Christ’s coming; must read as unmistakably corporate — every believer gathered at the parousia, not a small ascetic elite.
Apostle
Approved rendering: nulaaɗo
Transliteration: nulaaɗo
Doctrine: Apostleship
Rejected alternatives: rasuulu (never use; the Arabic-derived title reserved in Islamic usage for Muhammad as ‘the Messenger’)
Original: ἀπόστολος
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. 2:1-12 describes Paul, Silas, and Timothy’s shared, collegial, self-supporting apostolic ministry manner; never rasuulu, to prevent readers mapping this collegial team onto Muhammad’s singular prophetic office.
Power Of God
Approved rendering: doole Alla
Transliteration: doole Alla
Doctrine: Power of God for Salvation
Rejected alternatives: barke (marabout-associated spiritual power/blessing, never use)
Original: δύναμις
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. 1:5, the gospel’s arrival ‘in power’; must remain categorically distinct from barke, sought through amulets and blessed objects across Fulani communities.
Lord
Approved rendering: Joom
Transliteration: Joom
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Laamiiɗo (reserve for ‘ruler/king’ in political contexts, avoid as the primary term for divine Lordship to prevent conflation with historic Caliphate rulership)
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. 4:16 ‘the Lord himself… will descend’ must read as Christ’s own personal action, not an angelic proxy. This curriculum elevates practical review priority for this term given the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ archangel-identification risk at 4:16 documented in 05_translation_landscape.md — the syntax must never permit Christ to be read as identical with the accompanying archangel.
God
Approved rendering: Alla
Transliteration: Alla
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Original: θεός
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. 1:9-10, ‘the living and true God’ from whom idols are turned, inseparable from waiting for his Son from heaven — must be presented in explicitly Trinitarian, Christ-centered terms going beyond standard regional Islamic usage.
Hope
Approved rendering: yaakaare
Transliteration: yaakaare
Doctrine: Hope in Grief
Original: ἐλπίς
Category: Faith
NEW term. Well-attested regional Fulfulde word for hope/expectation, already in wide use, including in Islamic religious speech about hoping in Allah’s mercy. Doctrinally double-edged: regional Islamic usage typically frames afterlife hope as hope that one’s deeds will be found sufficient at Judgment, held in suspended uncertainty; Paul’s hope at 4:13 and 5:8 is a PRESENT certainty grounded retrospectively in Christ’s own past historical resurrection (4:14), not a future weighing of merit. This distinction is not recoverable from the word alone and must be taught explicitly every time the term appears. Provisional pending theologian confirmation of accompanying framing guidance.
Love Agape
Approved rendering: yiɗde
Transliteration: yiɗde
Doctrine: Sanctification / Universal Brotherly Love
Original: ἀγάπη
Category: Faith
NEW term. General Fulfulde verb/verbal-noun for love/loving, already in wide use, forming part of the programmatic triad at 1:3 (‘work of faith, labor of love, endurance of hope’). Must be taught to exceed Pulaaku’s lineage/clan-bound loyalty and hospitality norms — real virtues but narrower and reciprocity-bound — since 3:12 commands love ‘toward one another and toward all,’ and 4:9-10 commands philadelphia (brotherly love) extending across ethnic and clan lines. Provisional; confirm regional naturalness with native speakers.
Wrath Of God
Approved rendering: tikkere Alla
Transliteration: tikkere Alla
Doctrine: Wrath of God and Deliverance Through Christ
Rejected alternatives: hasara (misfortune/chance, never use)
Original: ὀργή
Category: God
NEW term. Used at 1:10 (Jesus delivers from ‘the wrath to come’) and 5:9 (‘not appointed to wrath but to obtain salvation’). Parallels the Islamic concept of ghadab Allah, but Islamic theology answers divine wrath with a deeds-weighing calculus at Judgment, whereas this letter answers it with deliverance already secured through Jesus specifically; this contrast must be stated explicitly, never left implicit.
Archangel
Approved rendering: malaaka mawɗo
Transliteration: malaaka mawɗo
Doctrine: The Return of Christ
Original: ἀρχάγγελος
Category: Eschatology
NEW term (partial transliteration: malaaka = already-naturalized Arabic-derived ‘angel’; mawɗo = native ‘great/chief’). 4:16, ‘voice of an archangel.’ Islamic eschatology similarly features an angel (commonly identified as Israfil) sounding a trumpet to signal resurrection — a surface parallel risking assimilation to that Judgment Day sequence. CULT-COLLISION NOTE (new to this book): Jehovah’s Witnesses’ literature cites this verse to teach that Christ IS the archangel Michael, an Arian-adjacent Christology denying Christ’s co-equal deity. This curriculum’s syntax must render the verse so Christ descends ACCOMPANIED BY an archangel’s voice — a herald announcing him — never so the construction could be read as identifying Christ as the archangel himself. Mandatory theologian review at every occurrence, escalating beyond the baseline’s general deity-of-Christ rule.
Trumpet Of God
Approved rendering: buubdi Alla
Transliteration: buubdi Alla
Doctrine: The Return of Christ
Original: σάλπιγξ θεοῦ
Category: Eschatology
NEW term (from buub-, ‘to blow/sound a horn’). 4:16, ‘the trumpet of God.’ The single most vivid and specific point of surface overlap with the Islamic Day of Judgment narrative (nafkh al-sur, the trumpet-blast of Israfil); needs the most explicit doctrinal handling of any single image in the core passage precisely because it is so memorable and easily assimilated to an existing framework.
Brotherly Love
Approved rendering: giggol musiɓɓe
Transliteration: giggol musiɓɓe
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: φιλαδελφία
Category: Sanctification
NEW descriptive term. 4:9, philadelphia, ‘love of siblings/brethren.’ Must be taught to extend across ethnic and clan lines to the whole Christian community, not confined to Fulani lineage/clan solidarity — a real but narrower Pulaaku value — paralleling the 3:12 ‘toward all’ caution on love_agape.
Spirit Soul Body
Approved rendering: ruuhu / wonkii / ɓalndu
Transliteration: ruuhu / wonkii / ɓalndu
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: πνεῦμα, ψυχή, σῶμα
Category: Sanctification
NEW terms. 5:23, the tripartite anthropological formula (pneuma/psychē/sōma). A doctrinally load-bearing claim that the whole person — not merely an inner soul — is sanctification’s object and will be kept for Christ’s coming. Sits beside a structurally similar but differently-framed Islamic anthropology (ruh/nafs/jism) oriented toward nafs-purification through law observance. The human ruuhu (lower-case, unmarked) must NEVER be visually or doctrinally confused with Ruuhu Ceniiɗo (the Holy Spirit, always capitalized and in full), especially since both appear in the same verse. No surveyed Fulfulde edition formally marks this distinction beyond capitalization, which is not reliably transmitted in oral teaching; must be addressed pedagogically.
Word Of The Lord
Approved rendering: Konngol Joom / Konngol Alla
Transliteration: Konngol Joom / Konngol Alla
Doctrine: Inspiration of Scripture
Original: λόγος Κυρίου / λόγος θεοῦ
Category: Covenant
NEW descriptive terms. 2:13 (Konngol Alla, Paul’s preached message as ‘the word of God’) and 4:15 (Konngol Joom, Paul’s parousia teaching claimed ‘by the word of the Lord’). Ties directly to the baseline’s inspiration_of_scripture doctrine; this is exactly the kind of direct revelatory-authority claim the tahrif doctrine (that earlier scriptures were later corrupted) is well positioned to contest among Fulfulde-speaking readers with regional Quranic scholarly education. No surveyed existing Fulfulde/Pular edition supplies apologetic framing addressing this; must be supplied by this curriculum’s teaching material.
Medium Risk Terms
Church
Approved rendering: kawtal
Transliteration: kawtal
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Rejected alternatives: moosaale (mosque, never use)
Original: ἐκκλησία
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Thessalonians 1:1 (‘the church of the Thessalonians’) confirms kawtal’s use for a local congregation, not only the universal church.
Kingdom Of God
Approved rendering: laamu Alla
Transliteration: laamu Alla
Doctrine: Kingdom Mission
Original: βασιλεία θεοῦ
Category: Kingdom
Inherited from Romans package. 2:12, ‘into his own kingdom and glory’; distinct from any historic or contemporary political Islamic state structure, given the memory of the Fulani-led Sokoto Caliphate.
Glory
Approved rendering: manaango
Transliteration: manaango
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: teddungal (reserve for human honor/dignity in Pulaaku contexts, avoid as the primary term for God’s glory)
Original: δόξα
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. 2:12 (called into his kingdom and glory) and 2:19-20 (‘crown of rejoicing’ at Christ’s coming); kept distinct from teddungal.
Holy
Approved rendering: ceniiɗo
Transliteration: ceniiɗo
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: laaɓɗo (physically clean, reserve for ritual/physical cleanliness only)
Original: ἅγιος
Category: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package. Describes Paul’s ministry conduct (2:10) and, at 5:26, the ‘holy kiss’ of greeting; laaɓɗo remains reserved for ritual/physical cleanliness.
Election
Approved rendering: suɓagol
Transliteration: suɓagol
Doctrine: Effectual Calling
Rejected alternatives: natal (fate/lot, use with caution)
Original: ἐκλογή
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. 1:4 ‘your election’ — God’s personal, relational choosing of this specific congregation, not assimilated to natal (al-qadar).
Peace
Approved rendering: jam
Transliteration: jam
Doctrine: Peace with God
Rejected alternatives: deeƴre (calm/stillness, too passive/psychological)
Original: εἰρήνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. NEW BOOK-SPECIFIC RISK: 5:3 uses jam ironically/negatively (‘peace and safety,’ a false security proclaimed by the world just before judgment) — the opposite valence from its normal warm greeting-register use. This reversal must be clearly signaled in translation so readers do not read the verse as endorsing ordinary social jam.
Jesus
Approved rendering: Yeesu
Transliteration: Yeesu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Iisa (the Quranic Arabic form, reserve only for explicit interfaith-dialogue contexts)
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. 4:14 ‘Jesus died and rose’ is the historical center of the core passage and the premise of the whole 4:13-18 syllogism; never the Quranic form Iisa in doctrinal exposition.
Father
Approved rendering: Baaba
Transliteration: Baaba
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. 1:1, 1:3, letter-opening address, resonating with strong Fulani family and lineage values.
Gentiles
Approved rendering: leƴƴi goo
Transliteration: leƴƴi goo
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles
Original: ἔθνη
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. NEW BOOK-SPECIFIC NUANCE: 4:5 (‘the Gentiles who do not know God’) adds a pejorative moral qualifier not present in Romans’ more neutral ethnic-covenant usage of the same term; teach this distinction explicitly rather than leaving it implicit.
Called
Approved rendering: noddaaɗo
Transliteration: noddaaɗo
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Rejected alternatives: torraaɗo (invited, too weak)
Original: καλέω (κάλοῦντος, ἐκάλεσεν, καλῶν)
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. In this letter the sense is consistently effectual calling to salvation/holiness (2:12, 4:7, 5:24), unlike Romans’ broader range that also includes apostolic calling.
Calling
Approved rendering: noddaandi
Transliteration: noddaandi
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Original: κλῆσις (implied by καλέω usage)
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Noun sense underlying the verbal usages at 2:12, 4:7, and 5:24; confirm regional currency with native speakers.
Prophecy
Approved rendering: annabaawo
Transliteration: annabaawo
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Original: προφητεία
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package (baseline Medium tier preserved in this record). RISK PRACTICALLY ELEVATED TO HIGH FOR THIS CURRICULUM PER 11_doctrine_analysis.md AND doctrine_risk_registry.json: 5:20 assumes an ongoing prophetic gift active in the church (‘do not despise prophesyings’), standing in direct tension with the mainstream Islamic doctrine of khatm al-nabuwwah (the ‘seal of the prophets,’ that all valid prophecy ended with Muhammad) — a collision not present in the baseline Romans package. Route this term’s occurrences in 1 Thessalonians as High/mandatory theologian review despite the Medium value recorded here for schema consistency with the baseline.
Idols
Approved rendering: sanamji
Transliteration: sanamji
Doctrine: Turning from Idols to the Living and True God
Original: εἴδωλα
Category: God
NEW term. Arabic-derived, already shared with Islamic anti-idolatry (shirk) vocabulary; used at 1:9 (‘turned to God from idols’). Genuine point of doctrinal contact, but the risk is that readers assume rejecting idols exhausts the verse’s content; the positive turn to serve the living God specifically through his Son from heaven (1:10) must be taught explicitly, not assumed as already-shared ground.
Sleep Death Euphemism
Approved rendering: ɓe ɗaanii
Transliteration: ɓe ɗaanii
Doctrine: Resurrection of Believers
Rejected alternatives: direct paraphrase collapsing straight to ‘those who have died,’ rejected because it loses the rest/hope rhetorical scaffolding the sleep-image builds toward v.14
Original: κοιμωμένων / κοιμηθέντας
Category: Eschatology
NEW term. 4:13-15, ‘those who are asleep/have fallen asleep’ (koimōmenōn/koimēthentas). Must be understood as a euphemism for real physical death of believers, not literal sleep, while preserving the comforting ‘rest’ nuance; a footnote gloss on FIRST use in any document is required. Prefer this formal-equivalence rendering over dynamic-equivalence ‘those who have died,’ consistent with the translation landscape survey’s finding that the sleep-image itself carries forward Paul’s resurrection argument.
Meet The Lord
Approved rendering: hawrude e Joom ka weeyo
Transliteration: hawrude e Joom ka weeyo
Doctrine: The Return of Christ
Original: ἀπάντησις
Category: Eschatology
NEW descriptive term. 4:17, apantēsis — a technical Hellenistic term for the formal public reception of an arriving dignitary. This image resonates positively with Fulani cultural practices of ceremonially receiving an honored guest (believers go OUT as an honor-escort, not passively wait) and should be used pastorally to convey honor and joy, not mere logistics.
Sexual Immorality
Approved rendering: jina
Transliteration: jina
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: πορνεία
Category: Sanctification
NEW term. 4:3, porneia. Arabic-derived, shared with the Islamic legal category zina — a genuine point of moral contact, but the curriculum must frame abstention as flowing from Spirit-empowered sanctification unto God (4:3-4, 4:7-8), not a Sharia-style legal-penalty compliance framework.
Moral Impurity
Approved rendering: tuundi
Transliteration: tuundi
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: laaɓal (ritual/ceremonial purity tied to Islamic ablution/wuduu practice, never use as a substitute)
Original: ἀκαθαρσία
Category: Sanctification
NEW term. 4:7, akatharsia. Must be kept distinct from laaɓal, which denotes external ritual cleanliness rather than the Spirit’s internal moral transformation this passage describes.
Affliction Tribulation
Approved rendering: tampere
Transliteration: tampere
Doctrine: Suffering for the Gospel
Original: θλῖψις
Category: Faith
NEW term. 1:6, 2:14-16, 3:1-4, 3:7. Must be distinguished from ordinary pastoralist hardship (drought, herd loss, displacement) to retain its specific sense of suffering incurred for gospel allegiance.
Grief Sorrow
Approved rendering: sunaare
Transliteration: sunaare
Doctrine: Hope in Grief
Original: λύπη (λυπῆσθε)
Category: Faith
NEW term (noun sunaare; verb sunaade). 4:13, lypē/lypēsthe. Must not be rendered as an absolute prohibition on mourning, which would contradict normal human and biblical grief practice; Paul’s contrast is specifically with HOPELESS grief, not grief itself.
Establish Strengthen
Approved rendering: tabitingol
Transliteration: tabitingol
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: στηρίζω
Category: Sanctification
NEW term. 3:2, 3:13, stērizō. Extends the tabit- root already used in the baseline’s doctrine name for ‘assurance of salvation’ (tabitinaari kisal); a plausible extension of existing baseline root vocabulary. Confirm regional naturalness with native speakers.
Blameless
Approved rendering: ŋati walaa
Transliteration: ŋati walaa
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: ἄμεμπτος (adv. ἀμέμπτως)
Category: Sanctification
NEW descriptive term (‘fault-none’). 2:10, 3:13, 5:23, amemptos/amemptōs. Pairs consistently with ceniiɗo/ceniinde across the letter’s holiness vocabulary.
Quench The Spirit
Approved rendering: boccude (Ruuhu Ceniiɗo)
Transliteration: boccude
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: σβέννυμι (μὴ σβέννυτε)
Category: Sanctification
NEW descriptive term. 5:19, sbennymi (‘do not quench the Spirit’). The verb boccude (‘to extinguish,’ as a fire) must be chosen carefully so it conveys resisting/suppressing the Spirit’s active work, not implying the Spirit’s own power could be destroyed.
Sons Of Light
Approved rendering: ɓiɓɓe annoora
Transliteration: ɓiɓɓe annoora
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Original: υἱοὶ φωτός
Category: Eschatology
NEW descriptive term. 5:5, huioi phōtos. Reuses annoora, the Arabic-derived word for ‘light’ shared with Islamic vocabulary (nur) — a positive point of contact (light/darkness moral dualism exists in both traditions), but must be anchored specifically to identity in Christ and readiness for his return, not left as generic light-mysticism.
Holy Kiss
Approved rendering: jokkondiral ceniindi
Transliteration: jokkondiral ceniindi
Doctrine: Church Practice
Original: φίλημα ἅγιον
Category: Church
NEW descriptive term (‘a holy/pure greeting-embrace’). 5:26, philēma hagion. Doctrinally low risk at the lexical level, but a literal kiss-greeting between believers of the opposite sex conflicts sharply with Pulaaku’s semteende (modesty) norms governing physical contact. Requires native-speaker guidance on a culturally appropriate substitute greeting practice preserving the intended ‘holy/set-apart’ affection, rather than literal enactment instruction.
Continual Prayer
Approved rendering: torgol duumiiɗo
Transliteration: torgol duumiiɗo
Doctrine: Prayer and Intercession
Original: προσεύχεσθε ἀδιαλείπτως
Category: Faith
NEW descriptive term, distinct from the baseline’s torgol wonande (‘intercession on behalf of’). 5:17, proseuchesthe adialeiptōs (‘pray without ceasing’) — a continual personal/communal posture rather than petition for others specifically. Must be kept distinct from salaa, the highly ritualized, fixed-times Islamic daily prayer, and from any suggestion of marabout-mediated petitionary practice.
Low Risk Terms
Thanksgiving
Approved rendering: yettoore
Transliteration: yettoore
Doctrine: Thanksgiving
Original: εὐχαριστία (vb. εὐχαριστοῦμεν)
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package. 1:2 (opening thanksgiving) and 5:18 (commanded continually).
Exhort
Approved rendering: wallitde
Transliteration: wallitde
Doctrine: Mutual Edification
Original: παρακαλέω
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package. Pervasive throughout (2:12; 4:1, 4:18; 5:11, 5:14). At 4:18 this word frames the entire preceding resurrection/parousia teaching as pastoral comfort for grieving people, not merely doctrinal information; this warmth must not be lost.
Satan
Approved rendering: Sayɗaan
Transliteration: Sayɗaan
Doctrine: Satanic Opposition to Ministry
Original: Σατανᾶς
Category: Sin
NEW term (low risk). 2:18, 3:5. Arabic-derived, shared identically with regional Islamic shaitan vocabulary — the same personal adversarial figure recognized across both traditions; minor narrative differences exist but do not require doctrinal correction for this curriculum’s purposes.
Idle Disorderly
Approved rendering: ɓe añɗuɓe golle
Transliteration: ɓe añɗuɓe golle
Doctrine: Church Order
Original: ἄτακτος
Category: Church
NEW descriptive term (‘those who refuse work’). 4:11-12, 5:14, ataktos. Resonates positively with the pastoralist labor ethic valued within Pulaaku; low doctrinal risk.
