1 John 1–5 | Fulfulde Translation Requirements
Curriculum: 1 John Core passage: 1 John 4:7–21 Destination language: Fulfulde (Fula)
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, drawn from every chapter of 1 John (1–5). Terms already recorded in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json are marked BASELINE and must be reused exactly, with no deviation. Terms newly required for 1 John are marked NEW and are proposed for addition to a curriculum-specific extension of translation memory, pending the mandatory theologian/native-speaker confirmation the baseline requires for all provisional descriptive compounds in Fulfulde.
Risk tiers and review routing follow the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json framework exactly (Critical/High → human theologian; Medium → native speaker; Low → automated).
Doctrine Category 1: God is Light and God is Love
| English term | Greek | Fulfulde rendering | Status | Risk | Chapters | Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| love (noun) | ἀγάπη (agapē) | giggol | NEW | Critical | 2, 3, 4 | Must convey God’s self-giving, unconditional, essence-level love. Risk: Islamic al-Wadūd is a responsive attribute conditioned on piety (Qur’an 3:31-32), not an unconditional ontological identity-statement; the “apart from merit” priority of God’s love (4:10, 4:19) must be stated explicitly, mirroring the baseline’s arjunde/grace caution. |
| love (verb) | ἀγαπάω (agapaō) | yiɗde | NEW | High | 2, 3, 4, 5 | General verb for “love/want” in Fulfulde, used identically for food, family, romance; the specific God-originated, self-giving sense must be taught explicitly per occurrence, not assumed. |
| beloved | ἀγαπητός (agapētos) | giggaaɗo / giggaaɓe | NEW | Medium | 2, 3, 4 | Endearment term derived from giggol; ensure covenantal warmth is retained, not generic politeness. |
| ”God is love” | ὁ θεὸς ἀγάπη ἐστίν | Alla ko giggol | NEW | Critical | 4 (4:8, 4:16) | Ontological identity-statement; must render identically at both occurrences (cross-document consistency rule, per baseline’s Romans 1:16-17/8:28 precedent). Do not soften to an action-statement (“God loves”). |
| ”God is light” | ὁ θεὸς φῶς ἐστιν | Alla ko ndaygu | NEW | Critical | 1 (1:5) | Parallel ontological statement to “God is love.” Collides with Qur’an 24:35 (An-Nūr) and Sufi Nūr Muhammadī doctrine; John’s sense is moral-relational (truthfulness, exposure of sin), not metaphysical-cosmic radiance — must be distinguished explicitly. |
| light | φῶς (phōs) | ndaygu | NEW | High | 1 | See above; paired conceptually with darkness. |
| darkness | σκοτία (skotia) | niɓe | NEW | High | 1 | Moral-spiritual category (sin, falsehood, estrangement from God), not merely physical/temporal absence of light. |
| perfect/complete love | τελεία ἀγάπη | giggol timmuɗo | NEW | Critical | 4 (4:18) | Compounds the Critical risk of giggol itself. |
| fear (servile dread) | φόβος (phobos) | kulol | NEW | High | 4 (4:18) | Must be qualified as servile dread of punishment, not reverential awe; avoid friction with the positive Islamic value of taqwa (God-fearing mindfulness), which this verse is not condemning. |
Doctrine Category 2: Fellowship with God and One Another
| English term | Greek | Fulfulde rendering | Status | Risk | Chapters | Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| fellowship | κοινωνία (koinōnia) | diisnondiral | BASELINE | Low | 1 | Reuse exactly. Confirm regional naturalness per baseline’s standing note. |
| abide/remain | μένω (menō) | ñiiɓde | NEW | High | 2, 3, 4 | Key recurring Johannine term (~24 occurrences); must denote ongoing covenantal relational communion, distinct from Sufi ḥulūl (mystical indwelling/union), a fraught category even within Islamic orthodoxy. Use consistently across all documents. |
| walk (conduct) | περιπατέω (peripateō) | yahde | NEW | Medium | 1, 2 | Figurative for habitual moral conduct. |
| Word of life | ὁ λόγος τῆς ζωῆς | Konngol nguurndam | NEW | Critical | 1 (1:1) | Direct Logos-Christology term; collides productively but incompletely with Qur’an 4:171’s “a Word from Him” (Isa) — shared vocabulary, not shared content; requires explicit teaching alongside baseline incarnation. |
| joy | χαρά (chara) | weltaare | NEW | Low | 1 | Standard term, minor risk. |
| brother (fellow believer) | ἀδελφός (adelphos) | musiɗɗo | NEW | Medium | 2, 3, 4, 5 | Interacts with Pulaaku’s strong ethnic-kinship categories; “brother” must be taught as extending to all believers, not narrowed to ethnic Fulani kin — a live tension for Fulani converts (cf. baseline christian_identity_in_christ). |
Doctrine Category 3: Confession and Forgiveness of Sin
| English term | Greek | Fulfulde rendering | Status | Risk | Chapters | Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| sin | ἁμαρτία (hamartia) | bakkaatu | BASELINE | High | 1, 2, 3, 5 | Reuse exactly. State moral guilt before a personal, holy God explicitly (baseline’s standing caution). |
| confess (sin/Christ) | ὁμολογέω (homologeō) | jaɓde | NEW | Critical | 1 (1:9), 2, 4 (4:2-3, 4:15) | Reuses the jaɓ- root already present in baseline’s adoption compound. Confessing “Jesus is the Son of God” (4:15) is the direct verbal negation of the Islamic shahāda’s content; must never be softened. |
| forgive | ἀφίημι (aphiēmi) | yaafaade (verb) / yaafuyee (noun) | NEW | Medium-High | 1 (1:9) | Baseline flags yaafuyee as “too narrow” a stand-alone gloss for justification; here it correctly names its own, narrower concept — but must be taught as flowing from Christ’s atoning blood (1:7), not an independent mercy-transaction parallel to Islamic tawba. |
| cleanse | καθαρίζω (katharizō) | laɓɓinde | NEW | High | 1 (1:7, 1:9) | Distinct from baseline’s laaɓɗo/laaɓal (ritual/physical cleanliness, wuḍūʾ-adjacent) and from ceniiɗo/ceniinde (ongoing moral holiness); this is a punctiliar cleansing from sin’s guilt through Christ’s atoning blood — a third, distinct category requiring explicit teaching. |
| blood of Jesus | αἷμα Ἰησοῦ | ƴiiƴam Yeesu | NEW | Critical | 1 (1:7) | Substitutionary atonement imagery; no Islamic atonement framework exists. Same weight as baseline grace/salvation. |
| propitiation/atoning sacrifice | ἱλασμός (hilasmos) | sadaka Almasiihu yaafuya bakkaatuuji | NEW | Critical | 2 (2:2), 4 (4:10) | Descriptive compound; no crystallized single Fulfulde term exists. Must be taught explicitly against the absence of any atonement category in Islamic soteriology. |
| faithful and just (of God) | πιστός καὶ δίκαιος | gomɗinaaɗo e peewɗo | NEW | Medium | 1 (1:9) | Built on baseline roots gomɗinal and peewal. |
| liar | ψεύστης (pseustēs) | fenoowo | NEW | Low-Medium | 1, 2, 4, 5 | Fine as a plain descriptive term (distinct from the baseline’s caution that fenaande is too weak specifically as a substitute for the doctrine of sin). |
| lawlessness | ἀνομία (anomia) | tooñange sariya | NEW | Medium | 3 (3:4) | Built on baseline root sariya; sin defined at its root as rebellion against God’s moral order. |
| sin unto death | ἁμαρτία πρὸς θάνατον | bakkaatu yahdi e maayde | NEW | Medium | 5 (5:16-17) | Pastoral-care distinction; avoid readers constructing an anxious fixed checklist. |
Doctrine Category 4: Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth
| English term | Greek | Fulfulde rendering | Status | Risk | Chapters | Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| born of God | γεννάω ἐκ τοῦ θεοῦ | jibinaaɗo Alla | NEW | High | 3, 4, 5 | Built on the jibin- root shared with baseline’s “peewal jibinaangal” (imputed righteousness) for morphological consistency, but denotes regeneration, a distinct doctrine. |
| children of God | τέκνα θεοῦ (tekna theou) | ɓiɓɓe Alla | NEW | Critical | 3 (3:1-2, 3:10) | MUST be kept rigorously distinct from BASELINE Ɓiɗɗo Alla (reserved exclusively, singular, for Christ’s unique Sonship). John’s own Greek distinguishes tekna from huios for this reason; collapsing the distinction in Fulfulde risks diluting Christ’s unique Sonship and handing Islamic Tawhid objections easy ammunition. Anchor explicitly to baseline’s adoption doctrine. |
| seed (of God) | σπέρμα (sperma) | geɗal Alla | NEW | Medium | 3 (3:9) | Deliberate morphological echo of baseline’s “geɗal Daawuda” (seed of David); resonates with strong Fulani lineage/genealogy values. |
| Cain | Κάϊν | Kayinu | NEW | Low | 3 (3:12) | Proper name, transliterated. |
| murderer | ἀνθρωποκτόνος | waroowo | NEW | Low | 3 (3:15) | Standard term. |
| lay down one’s life | τίθημι τὴν ψυχήν | waɗde nguurndam mun wonande | NEW | Medium | 3 (3:16) | Positive resonance with Pulaaku’s valuing of sacrificial courage for community; object (dying for fellow believers) must be made explicit. |
| bowels of compassion / mercy | τὰ σπλάγχνα | yurmeende | BASELINE | Low | 3 (3:17) | Reuse baseline’s general term for mercy/compassion. |
| hate | μισέω (miseō) | añde | NEW | Low | 4 (4:20) | Standard term for active hostility. |
| commandment | ἐντολή (entolē) | yamiroore | NEW | Medium | 2, 3, 4 | Built on baseline’s “yamiroore Linjiila” root; must be kept distinct from BASELINE sariya (Law/Sharia) — this is a relational love-command flowing from new birth, not a legal code observed for merit. |
| brother | ἀδελφός | musiɗɗo | NEW | Medium | 2, 3, 4, 5 | See Category 2 above. |
Doctrine Category 5: The Incarnation and Antichrist
| English term | Greek | Fulfulde rendering | Status | Risk | Chapters | Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| incarnation (“come in the flesh”) | ἐν σαρκὶ ἐληλυθότα | Alla wontii neɗɗo | BASELINE | Critical | 4 (4:2-3) | Reuse exactly. The sharpest doctrinal flashpoint in the letter: God assuming flesh is shirk by definition in Islamic theology; requires direct, careful, non-evasive teaching. |
| flesh (of the incarnation) | σάρξ (sarx) | ɓanndu | NEW | Critical | 4 (4:2) | Bodily human existence in the incarnation sense — distinct from the “lust of the flesh” sense below. |
| flesh (disordered desire) | ἐπιθυμία τῆς σαρκός | tuuyo ɓanndu | NEW | Medium | 2 (2:16) | Distinct sense from incarnation-flesh; do not conflate the two Fulfulde renderings’ theological weight. |
| Son of God | υἱὸς τοῦ θεοῦ | Ɓiɗɗo Alla | BASELINE | Critical | 4, 5 | Reuse exactly, always in full. Never soften; direct Tawhid flashpoint (echoes Qur’an 112). |
| only begotten/unique Son | μονογενής | Ɓiɗɗo Alla gooto tun | NEW (baseline term + modifier) | Critical | 4 (4:9) | Emphasizes exclusivity of Christ’s Sonship; must not be softened. |
| antichrist | ἀντίχριστος | gaño Almasiihu | NEW | Critical | 2 (2:18, 2:22), 4 (4:3) | Risk of conflation with Islamic al-Dajjāl (a single future end-times deceiver); John describes many present-day antichrists identified by denial of the incarnation. Must be explicitly distinguished from Dajjāl in teaching materials. |
| deny (the Son) | ἀρνέομαι (arneomai) | yeddude | NEW | High | 2 (2:22-23) | Direct doctrinal inversion: mainstream regional Islamic Tawhid doctrine itself formally “denies” the Son; this is confrontation with majority doctrine, not a marginal heresy as in John’s original setting. |
| the Christ (contested title) | ὁ Χριστός | Almasiihu | BASELINE | Critical | 2 (2:22), 5 (5:1) | Reuse exactly, as the specific contested messianic title under dispute — distinguish from “Yeesu Kiristu” as the plain proper name (see Category 8). |
| test the spirits | δοκιμάζετε τὰ πνεύματα | ɗaɓɓitde ruuhuuji | NEW | Critical | 4 (4:1) | See Doctrine Category 8 below. |
| false prophets | ψευδοπροφῆται | annabi fenaaɗo | NEW | High | 4 (4:1) | Built on baseline root annabi; must be scoped explicitly to John’s specific historical opponents, given the exceptional prestige of prophetic authority in regional Islamic self-understanding. |
| anointing | χρῖσμα (chrisma) | ƴiƴŋal Ruuhu Ceniiɗo | NEW | High | 2 (2:20, 2:27) | Must never be confused with barke (baseline’s forbidden marabout-associated blessing/spiritual power); the Spirit’s teaching gift to every believer, not a person-mediated power. |
| advocate/intercessor | παράκλητος (paraklētos) | torɗo wonande men e Baaba | NEW | High | 2 (2:1) | Built on baseline’s “torgol wonande” (intercession) root; must be distinguished from the Islamic concept of shafā’a (intercession of prophets/saints), which is itself contested across Islamic schools. |
| devil | διάβολος (diabolos) | Ibliisa | NEW | Medium | 3 (3:8, 3:10) | Shared vocabulary with Islamic Iblīs; broadly compatible category (personal rebellious adversary), differing origin-narrative is a secondary teaching point. |
Doctrine Category 6: Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life
| English term | Greek | Fulfulde rendering | Status | Risk | Chapters | Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| eternal life | ζωὴ αἰώνιος (zōē aiōnios) | nguurndam duumiiɗam | NEW | High | 1, 2, 3, 5 | Must be taught as a present possession through the Son (5:11-13), not merely a future reward contingent on weighed deeds, per baseline’s standing salvation caution re: aljanna. |
| Savior of the world | σωτὴρ τοῦ κόσμου | Kisoowo aduna | NEW (baseline root) | Critical | 4 (4:14) | Built on baseline’s kisal root; must not default into a deeds-weighing framework; “world” (aduna) here is mission-scope, not endorsement of dunya-values condemned elsewhere in the letter. |
| confidence/boldness | παρρησία (parrēsia) | hardeende | NEW | Medium | 3 (3:21), 4 (4:17) | Confidence grounded in Christ’s finished atoning work, not a favorable outcome in a deeds-weighing process (baseline assurance_of_salvation). |
| day of judgment | ἡμέρα τῆς κρίσεως | ñalaande ñaawoore | NEW | High | 4 (4:17) | Genuine common ground with Islamic Yawm al-Qiyāma; basis of confidence (union with Christ/perfected love vs. weighed deeds/mīzān) must be taught explicitly as differing. |
| testimony/witness | μαρτυρία (martyria) | seedaagal | NEW | High | 4 (4:14), 5 (5:6-10) | Structural (formal) parallel to Islamic shahāda (testimony of faith); shared form, sharply different content — must be handled with the same explicit care as baseline’s Almasiihu caution. |
| testify | μαρτυρέω (martyreō) | seedaade | NEW | High | 1, 4, 5 | See above. |
| overcome/conquer (the world) | νικάω (nikaō) | foolde | NEW | High | 4 (4:4), 5 (5:4-5) | Strong military-conquest resonance given regional historical memory of the Sokoto Caliphate’s jihad campaigns; must be explicitly taught as moral-spiritual, not political/military, victory. |
| victory | ἡ νίκη (hē nikē) | fooleeru | NEW | Medium | 5 (5:4) | See above. |
| water, blood, and Spirit (three witnesses) | τὸ ὕδωρ, τὸ αἷμα, τὸ πνεῦμα | ndiyam, ƴiiƴam, Ruuhu | NEW/BASELINE mixed | Medium-High | 5 (5:6-8) | Triadic testimony structure adds a further Trinitarian-adjacent dimension; teach without over-reading beyond the text’s own claim. |
| idols | εἴδωλα (eidōla) | sanamuuji | NEW | High | 5 (5:21) | Double-edged: genuine shared anti-idolatry conviction, but risk of being turned back rhetorically against Trinitarian/incarnational devotion as itself shirk-adjacent; anticipate this directly in teaching. |
Doctrine Category 7: Overcoming the World
| English term | Greek | Fulfulde rendering | Status | Risk | Chapters | Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| the world (moral-spiritual system) | κόσμος (kosmos) | aduna | NEW | High | 2, 4, 5 | Arabic-derived, shared with Islamic dunyā/ākhira dichotomy — genuine point of contact for ascetic-adjacent warnings, but must be distinguished from a purely temporal/material category; John’s “world” is a moral system actively opposed to God’s love. |
| lust of the flesh | ἐπιθυμία τῆς σαρκός | tuuyo ɓanndu | NEW | Medium | 2 (2:16) | See Category 5. |
| lust of the eyes | ἐπιθυμία τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν | tuuyo gite | NEW | Medium | 2 (2:16) | — |
| pride of life | ἀλαζονεία τοῦ βίου | mantoore nguurndam | NEW | Medium | 2 (2:16) | Distinguish sinful worldly boastfulness from the legitimate Pulaaku value teddungal (dignity/honor), already flagged in baseline as distinct from divine glory. |
| overcome the world | νικᾷ τὸν κόσμον | foolde aduna | NEW | High | 5 (5:4-5) | See Category 6. |
Doctrine Category 8: Testing the Spirits
| English term | Greek | Fulfulde rendering | Status | Risk | Chapters | Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| test the spirits | δοκιμάζετε τὰ πνεύματα | ɗaɓɓitde ruuhuuji | NEW | Critical | 4 (4:1) | Highest cultural-sensitivity item in the letter: risks being read through the lens of jinn-discernment/exorcism practice carried out by marabouts. Must be explicitly taught as doctrinal discernment of teaching (via the incarnation confession, 4:2), not spirit-being exorcism. Not to be confused with BASELINE Ruuhu Ceniiɗo (capitalized, singular, the Holy Spirit). |
| spirit of truth / spirit of error | πνεῦμα τῆς ἀληθείας / τῆς πλάνης | ruuhu goonga / ruuhu majjere | NEW | High | 4 (4:6) | Same jinn-discernment caution as above. |
| false prophets | ψευδοπροφῆται | annabi fenaaɗo | NEW | High | 4 (4:1) | See Category 5. |
| confess Jesus come in the flesh | ὁμολογεῖ Ἰησοῦν Χριστὸν ἐν σαρκὶ ἐληλυθότα | jaɓa Yeesu Kiristu wonti neɗɗo | NEW | Critical | 4 (4:2-3) | The doctrinal litmus test itself; compounds Critical incarnation and Critical confession vocabulary — the sharpest flashpoint in the book. |
| know/discern | γινώσκω (ginōskō) | anndude | NEW | Medium | throughout | Relational, experiential knowledge, distinct from BASELINE gomɗinal (faith/trust) — flows from faith but is not identical to it. |
Doctrine Category 9 (Cross-Cutting): Proper Names and Core Christological Titles
| English term | Greek | Fulfulde rendering | Status | Risk | Chapters | Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| God | θεός (theos) | Alla | BASELINE | High | all | Reuse exactly. |
| Jesus | Ἰησοῦς (Iēsous) | Yeesu | BASELINE | Critical | all | Reuse exactly; never the Qur’anic Iisa in doctrinal exposition. |
| Christ (proper-name component) | Χριστός (as part of “Jesus Christ”) | Kiristu | BASELINE (transliteration standard) | Critical | all | Used in the compound proper name “Yeesu Kiristu.” |
| the Christ / Messiah (contested title) | ὁ Χριστός | Almasiihu | BASELINE | Critical | 2, 5 | Used specifically where Χριστός functions as the disputed title being confessed or denied (2:22; 5:1), distinct from the plain proper name usage above — preserves the baseline’s shared-vocabulary-not-shared-content caution. |
| Holy Spirit | πνεῦμα ἅγιον | Ruuhu Ceniiɗo | BASELINE | Critical | 3, 4, 5 | Reuse exactly, always in full; never shortened to ruuhu alone, never jinna. |
| Father | πατήρ (patēr) | Baaba | BASELINE | High | 1, 2, 3, 4 | Reuse exactly. |
| Son of God | υἱὸς τοῦ θεοῦ | Ɓiɗɗo Alla | BASELINE | Critical | 4, 5 | Reuse exactly, reserved exclusively for Christ (see Category 5 for the tekna/huios distinction). |
| faith/believe | πίστις / πιστεύω | gomɗinal | BASELINE | High | throughout | Reuse exactly; object of faith (belief that Jesus is the Son of God/the Christ) must always be explicit. |
| righteous/righteousness | δίκαιος / δικαιοσύνη | peewɗo / peewal | BASELINE | High | 1, 2, 3 | Reuse exactly. |
Summary of New Terms Requiring Theologian/Native-Speaker Confirmation
Per the baseline’s standing rule for provisional descriptive compounds in Fulfulde, all NEW terms in this glossary (approximately 45 entries) must be flagged for both native-speaker and theologian confirmation before being finalized in the curriculum-specific translation memory extension, with the following terms requiring mandatory human theologian review due to Critical risk:
- giggol / Alla ko giggol (love; “God is love”)
- Alla ko ndaygu (“God is light”)
- Konngol nguurndam (Word of life)
- sadaka Almasiihu yaafuya bakkaatuuji (propitiation)
- ƴiiƴam Yeesu (blood of Jesus)
- jaɓde (confess — sin and Christ)
- ɓiɓɓe Alla (children of God, vs. reserved Ɓiɗɗo Alla)
- gaño Almasiihu (antichrist)
- Ɓiɗɗo Alla gooto tun (only begotten Son)
- Kisoowo aduna (Savior of the world)
- ɗaɓɓitde ruuhuuji (test the spirits)
- jaɓa Yeesu Kiristu wonti neɗɗo (confess Christ come in the flesh)
- giggol timmuɗo (perfect love)
All remaining High-risk NEW terms require native-speaker review at minimum, with theologian review strongly recommended given this language’s thinner Bible-translation tradition, per the baseline’s standing notes.
See 07_semantic_analysis.md for full verse-by-verse and chapter-by-chapter argumentation behind each entry above.
Critical Risk Terms
Grace
Approved rendering: Arjunde
Transliteration: arjunde
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: yurmeende (reserve for ‘mercy/compassion’ generally, not unmerited favor specifically), barke (blessing, avoid as a substitute)
Inherited from Romans package for 1 John curriculum. Not itself the primary vocabulary of 1 John (which expresses this content through giggol/‘God is love’ and the priority of his initiating love, 4:10, 4:19), but the identical risk pattern applies: arjunde/divine favor risks being read as responsive to piety rather than unconditional, exactly as giggol risks collapsing into the conditional al-Wadud framework. Retained here as the baseline anchor for that shared risk logic.
Salvation
Approved rendering: kisal
Transliteration: kisal
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: dancal (protection, never as a stand-alone substitute), aljanna (paradise, never as a stand-alone gloss for salvation itself)
Inherited from Romans package for 1 John curriculum. Root reused in the new compound Kisoowo aduna (‘Savior of the world,’ 1 John 4:14); the baseline’s deeds-weighing caution applies with equal force to 1 John’s assurance-of-salvation doctrine (5:11-13).
Son Of God
Approved rendering: Ɓiɗɗo Alla
Transliteration: Ɓiɗɗo Alla
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: nulaaɗo mawɗo (a great messenger, an explicit downgrade and rejected)
Inherited from Romans package for 1 John curriculum. CRITICAL: reused exactly, always in full, reserved exclusively and singularly for Christ throughout 1 John (4:15; 5:5, 10-13, 20), never interchanged with the new plural term ‘ɓiɓɓe Alla’ (children of God, believers). This is the single most dangerous lexical-proximity risk in the entire curriculum, since Fulfulde’s singular/plural morphology of the same root (ɓiɗɗo/ɓiɓɓe) could otherwise look like simple number-agreement rather than a categorical theological distinction, handing Tawhid-based objections easy ammunition.
Incarnation
Approved rendering: Alla wontii neɗɗo
Transliteration: Alla wontii neɗɗo
Doctrine: Incarnation
Inherited from Romans package for 1 John curriculum. CRITICAL: reused exactly. This is the sharpest doctrinal flashpoint in 1 John, which makes affirming this doctrine (‘Jesus Christ come in the flesh,’ 4:2-3) the explicit litmus test for distinguishing true teaching from the antichrist spirit. Must be taught directly and confidently, never evasively, exactly as the baseline requires.
Messiah
Approved rendering: Almasiihu
Transliteration: Almasiihu
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Inherited from Romans package for 1 John curriculum. Used both as part of the compound proper name ‘Yeesu Kiristu’ and, distinctly, as the specific contested messianic title under dispute in 1 John 2:22 (‘Jesus is the Christ’) and 5:1; also the root of the new coined term ‘gaño Almasiihu’ (antichrist, literally ‘opponent of the Messiah’).
Love Noun
Approved rendering: giggol
Transliteration: giggol
Doctrine: God is Light and God is Love
Rejected alternatives: yiɗde used as a noun (too generic, carries no inherent unconditional/essence-level sense)
CRITICAL: must convey God’s self-giving, unconditional, essence-level love. The only readily available cultural analogue, Islamic al-Wadud, is explicitly conditioned on piety/obedience (Qur’an 3:31-32) — a responsive attribute, not an unconditional essence-statement independent of merit. The ‘apart from merit’/‘he first loved us’ priority (1 John 4:10, 4:19) must be stated explicitly every time, mirroring the baseline’s arjunde (grace) caution exactly.
God Is Love
Approved rendering: Alla ko giggol
Transliteration: Alla ko giggol
Doctrine: God is Light and God is Love
Rejected alternatives: Alla yiɗi yimɓe (God loves people — an action-statement, explicitly rejected as it is compatible with the conditional Islamic al-Wadud framework and loses the ontological ‘is’)
CRITICAL: the single highest-stakes rendering decision in the letter. Must be rendered IDENTICALLY at both occurrences (1 John 4:8 and 4:16), per this Language Package’s cross-document consistency rule (mirroring the baseline’s Romans 1:16-17/8:28 precedent). Never soften to an action-statement. Islamic al-Wadud is a responsive attribute conditioned on piety (Qur’an 3:31-32); this ontological identity-statement must be taught as prior to and independent of any human response.
God Is Light
Approved rendering: Alla ko ndaygu
Transliteration: Alla ko ndaygu
Doctrine: God is Light and God is Love
CRITICAL: parallel ontological statement to ‘God is love’ (1 John 1:5). Collides with Qur’an 24:35 (An-Nur) and Sufi Nur Muhammadi doctrine, giving readers a familiar but metaphysically-cosmic (not moral-relational) category. John’s sense is moral-relational (truthfulness, exposure of sin, 1:5-7), never assumed as automatically shared ground; requires a mandatory explanatory gloss on first use per document.
Perfect Love
Approved rendering: giggol timmuɗo
Transliteration: giggol timmuɗo
Doctrine: God is Light and God is Love
CRITICAL: compounds the Critical risk of giggol itself (1 John 4:18). Must not be read as merely ‘very strong affection’ but as love perfected by union with God’s own essence-love, casting out servile fear (kulol) of condemnation.
Word Of Life
Approved rendering: Konngol nguurndam
Transliteration: Konngol nguurndam
Doctrine: Fellowship with God and One Another
CRITICAL: Christ himself as the eternal, life-giving Word, historically seen, heard, and touched (1 John 1:1), grounding apostolic testimony and all Christian fellowship. Directly related to the baseline’s Critical incarnation doctrine. The Qur’an (4:171) calls Jesus ‘a Word from Him’ (kalimatun minhu), a shared but theologically thinner category (a title, not the eternal, personally pre-existent, incarnate Logos); must not be mistaken for shared belief.
Confess
Approved rendering: jaɓde
Transliteration: jaɓde
Doctrine: Confession and Forgiveness of Sin
CRITICAL: reuses the jaɓ- root already present in the baseline’s adoption compound. One verb doing double duty across two very different objects. Confessing sin (1:9) must be distinguished from Islamic tawba (repentance secured through remorse and resolve alone, without a mediating sacrifice) — always name the atoning blood (1:7) as the ground. Confessing Christ’s identity (‘Jesus is the Son of God,’ 4:15; ‘Jesus Christ come in the flesh,’ 4:2-3; cf. 2:23) is the direct verbal negation of the shahada’s core content and must never be softened. Always make the object of confession explicit.
Blood Of Jesus
Approved rendering: ƴiiƴam Yeesu
Transliteration: ƴiiƴam Yeesu
Doctrine: Confession and Forgiveness of Sin
CRITICAL: same doctrinal weight as the baseline’s grace/salvation Critical entries. Islamic theology has no substitutionary-atonement category; sin is addressed by discretionary mercy weighed against deeds, never by sacrificial blood. Must be taught explicitly alongside propitiation (1:7; 2:2; 4:10).
Propitiation
Approved rendering: sadaka Almasiihu yaafuya bakkaatuuji
Transliteration: sadaka Almasiihu yaafuya bakkaatuuji
Doctrine: Confession and Forgiveness of Sin
CRITICAL: descriptive compound required; no crystallized single Fulfulde theological term exists. Islamic soteriology has no atonement framework at all — sin is addressed through Allah’s discretionary mercy weighed against deeds and sincere repentance (tawba), never through a substitutionary sacrifice. Must be taught explicitly, exactly as the baseline instructs for grace and salvation. Flagged for mandatory theologian confirmation before final deployment, per the baseline’s standing rule for provisional compounds.
Children Of God
Approved rendering: ɓiɓɓe Alla
Transliteration: ɓiɓɓe Alla
Doctrine: Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth
CRITICAL: believers’ derived, adoptive sonship (1 John 3:1-2, 3:10) — must be kept rigorously distinct from the BASELINE, reserved, singular Ɓiɗɗo Alla (Christ’s unique, eternal, co-equal Sonship). John’s own Greek distinguishes tekna from huios for this reason; collapsing the distinction in Fulfulde risks either diluting Christ’s unique Sonship (handing Islamic Tawhid objections easy ammunition — ‘even Christians admit many children of God’) or under-translating believers’ real, Spirit-given filial status. Anchor explicitly to the baseline’s adoption doctrine (jaɓugol wonande ɓiɗɗo) every time either concept is in view.
Flesh Incarnation
Approved rendering: ɓanndu
Transliteration: ɓanndu
Doctrine: The Incarnation and Antichrist
CRITICAL: names the fact of Christ’s genuine bodily human existence in the specific incarnation sense (1 John 4:2) — a categorically different, higher-stakes sense than the ‘lust of the flesh’ usage (2:16). The two Fulfulde compounds using this root (ɓanndu vs. tuuyo ɓanndu) must never be conflated in teaching.
Antichrist
Approved rendering: gaño Almasiihu
Transliteration: gaño Almasiihu
Doctrine: The Incarnation and Antichrist
CRITICAL: coined for this letter (literally ‘enemy/opponent of the Messiah’); no prior Fulfulde Christian rendering identified. Fulfulde readers are very likely to map this onto al-Dajjal, the singular future end-times deceiver of Islamic eschatology; John describes MANY antichrists already active in his own day (2:18, 22; 4:3), identified specifically by denial of the incarnation, not a single future cosmic figure. Must be explicitly distinguished from Dajjal in every teaching occurrence to prevent readers from dismissing the doctrine as ‘not yet relevant’ or collapsing the two figures into one.
Only Begotten Son
Approved rendering: Ɓiɗɗo Alla gooto tun
Transliteration: Ɓiɗɗo Alla gooto tun
Doctrine: The Incarnation and Antichrist
CRITICAL: modifies the baseline-reserved term Ɓiɗɗo Alla to emphasize exclusivity (1 John 4:9). Directly counters the well-known Islamic scholarly objection that God cannot beget (Qur’an 112); must never be softened.
The Christ Contested Title
Approved rendering: Almasiihu
Transliteration: Almasiihu
Doctrine: The Incarnation and Antichrist
CRITICAL: same term as BASELINE messiah, but flagged separately here because 1 John uses it specifically as the disputed title being confessed or denied (2:22; 5:1), distinct from its use within the plain proper name ‘Yeesu Kiristu.’ Shared vocabulary with the Qur’anic al-Masih; must build on the shared title while explicitly teaching the very different content 1 John gives it, especially where it is the explicit target of denial (2:22).
Savior Of The World
Approved rendering: Kisoowo aduna
Transliteration: Kisoowo aduna
Doctrine: Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life
CRITICAL: built on the baseline’s kisal root. Christ’s universal-scope saving mission, sent by the Father (1 John 4:14). Must not default into a deeds-weighing framework; ‘world’ (aduna) here is mission-scope, not an endorsement of worldly (dunya) values elsewhere condemned in this same letter (2:15-17).
Test The Spirits
Approved rendering: ɗaɓɓitde ruuhuuji
Transliteration: ɗaɓɓitde ruuhuuji
Doctrine: Testing the Spirits
CRITICAL: the single highest cultural-sensitivity item in the letter. Risks being popularly read through the lens of jinn-discernment and exorcism practices carried out by marabouts across Fulani and neighboring communities — a real, active folk-Islamic practice distinct from John’s meaning. Must be explicitly and repeatedly taught that these ‘spirits’ are teaching-spirits behind human prophets/teachers, tested by a specific doctrinal confession (4:2), not spirit-beings to be exorcised, divined about, or protected against with amulets. Lowercase, plural, generic ruuhu here must never be confused with the capitalized, singular BASELINE Ruuhu Ceniiɗo.
Confess Christ Come In Flesh
Approved rendering: jaɓa Yeesu Kiristu wonti neɗɗo
Transliteration: jaɓa Yeesu Kiristu wonti neɗɗo
Doctrine: Testing the Spirits
CRITICAL: the specific doctrinal litmus test for authentic teaching (1 John 4:2-3). Compounds the baseline’s Critical incarnation doctrine with the Critical confession vocabulary of 4:15 — the single sharpest doctrinal flashpoint in the letter, since God assuming flesh is shirk by definition in Islamic theology. Must be taught with direct, careful, non-evasive explanation; every teaching unit touching 4:1-6 must engage this sentence directly, never in passing.
High Risk Terms
God
Approved rendering: Alla
Transliteration: Alla
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Inherited from Romans package for 1 John curriculum. Alla (from Arabic Allah) is the universal term for God across both Muslim and Christian Fulfulde speakers, with no viable alternative and no competing polytheistic default sense. This shared vocabulary is a genuine point of contact, but this curriculum must consistently present Alla, per 1 John’s two ontological ‘God is ___’ statements (1:5, 4:8), in explicitly Trinitarian and Christ-centered terms that go beyond, and are not automatically assumed by, standard regional Islamic usage of the same word.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: Ruuhu Ceniiɗo
Transliteration: Ruuhu Ceniiɗo
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: ruuhu (never use alone), jinna (never use; a jinn/spirit being in Islamic and West African folk belief)
Inherited from Romans package for 1 John curriculum. Ruuhu Ceniiɗo must always be used in full. Especially critical in 1 John, where lowercase, generic, plural ‘ruuhu(uji)’ (spirits, 4:1-6) must never visually or doctrinally merge with this capitalized, singular, reserved term.
Sin
Approved rendering: bakkaatu
Transliteration: bakkaatu
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Rejected alternatives: fenaande (mistake/lie, too weak)
Inherited from Romans package for 1 John curriculum. Well established. 1 John’s insistence on universal sinfulness (1:8, 1:10) and specific pastoral categories of sin (3:4; 5:16-17) must state moral guilt before a personal, holy God explicitly rather than assuming it from the word alone.
Faith
Approved rendering: gomɗinal
Transliteration: gomɗinal
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: hoolaare (trust, acceptable as a supporting synonym)
Inherited from Romans package for 1 John curriculum. The object of faith must always be explicit; in 1 John this is specifically belief that Jesus is the Son of God/the Christ (5:1, 4-5, 10, 13), the means of overcoming the world.
Righteousness
Approved rendering: peewal
Transliteration: peewal
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: nunɗal (fairness/justice, too civic)
Inherited from Romans package for 1 John curriculum. Used of both Christ’s own righteousness (2:1, 2:29) and the believer’s practice of righteousness as evidence of new birth (2:29; 3:7, 10); risks being heard as good moral character rather than status/practice flowing from new birth.
Apostle
Approved rendering: nulaaɗo
Transliteration: nulaaɗo
Doctrine: Apostleship
Rejected alternatives: rasuulu (never use; the Arabic-derived title reserved in Islamic usage for Muhammad as ‘the Messenger’)
Inherited from Romans package for 1 John curriculum. 1 John itself never uses this title of its author, but the underlying nul- root (‘to send’) is reused for the verb ‘nulaa’ describing the Father’s sending of the Son (4:9-10, 14), a categorically greater, unrepeatable sending that must be grammatically distinguished from ordinary apostolic sending.
Imputed Righteousness
Approved rendering: peewal jibinaangal
Transliteration: peewal jibinaangal
Doctrine: Justification by Faith
Rejected alternatives: peewal ɓaawaangal e golle (righteousness earned by works, the explicit rejected opposite)
Inherited from Romans package for 1 John curriculum. The jibin- root is reused morphologically in the new compound ‘jibinaaɗo Alla’ (‘born of God,’ regeneration, 1 John 2:29; 3:9; 4:7; 5:1, 4, 18); the two doctrines (forensic imputation vs. spiritual regeneration) must be explicitly distinguished despite the shared root.
Power Of God
Approved rendering: doole Alla
Transliteration: doole Alla
Doctrine: Power of God for Salvation
Rejected alternatives: barke (marabout-associated spiritual power/blessing, never use)
Inherited from Romans package for 1 John curriculum. Same barke-exclusion logic applies to 1 John’s ‘anointing’ (chrisma) doctrine (2:20, 27), the Spirit’s teaching gift to every believer, never a person-mediated power.
Sanctification
Approved rendering: ceniinde
Transliteration: ceniinde
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: laaɓal (ritual/ceremonial purification, avoid as a substitute)
Inherited from Romans package for 1 John curriculum. Sits in a three-way crowded semantic neighborhood with laaɓal (ritual purity) and the new term laɓɓinde (punctiliar cleansing from sin’s guilt through Christ’s blood); all three must be explicitly fenced from one another in 1 John 1:7-9 teaching.
Love Verb
Approved rendering: yiɗde
Transliteration: yiɗde
Doctrine: God is Light and God is Love
The ordinary Fulfulde verb for ‘love/want,’ used identically for food, kin, and romantic attraction; carries no inherent theological weight on its own. The letter’s specific God-originated, self-giving sense (used throughout chapters 2-5) must be anchored explicitly to giggol/Alla ko giggol at each doctrinally load-bearing occurrence, never assumed from the verb alone.
Light
Approved rendering: ndaygu
Transliteration: ndaygu
Doctrine: God is Light and God is Love
A plain physical-light noun with no independent theological history in Fulfulde. Always pair with niɓe (darkness) as its moral opposite to lock in the moral-spiritual paired reading rather than a physical-radiance reading.
Darkness
Approved rendering: niɓe
Transliteration: niɓe
Doctrine: God is Light and God is Love
Can default to a purely physical/temporal sense (nightfall); must retain John’s moral-spiritual estrangement/sin sense (1 John 1:5-7; 2:8-11).
Servile Fear
Approved rendering: kulol
Transliteration: kulol
Doctrine: God is Light and God is Love
Must be qualified explicitly as dread of condemnation/punishment specifically (1 John 4:18), not reverence. Islamic spirituality places strong positive weight on taqwa (God-fearing mindfulness); this verse does not condemn that reverence and must not be taught as if it does.
Abide Remain
Approved rendering: ñiiɓde
Transliteration: ñiiɓde
Doctrine: Fellowship with God and One Another
Key recurring Johannine term (~24 occurrences across 1 John: 2:6, 2:24, 2:28, 3:6, 3:24, 4:13, 4:15-16, etc.). Must be distinguished from Sufi hulul (mystical indwelling/union with the divine), a category regarded as theologically fraught even within Islamic orthodoxy; the Johannine sense is ongoing covenantal relational communion, not metaphysical fusion of being. Establish early with an explicit gloss and hold fixed across every occurrence.
Forgive
Approved rendering: yaafaade (verb) / yaafuyee (noun)
Transliteration: yaafaade / yaafuyee
Doctrine: Confession and Forgiveness of Sin
The baseline flags yaafuyee as too narrow a stand-alone gloss for justification generally; here it correctly names its own, narrower concept (1 John 1:9; 2:12), but must always be taught as flowing specifically from Christ’s atoning blood (1:7), never as an independent mercy-transaction parallel to Islamic tawba.
Cleanse
Approved rendering: laɓɓinde
Transliteration: laɓɓinde
Doctrine: Confession and Forgiveness of Sin
Sits in a three-way crowded semantic neighborhood: must be kept distinct from BASELINE laaɓɗo/laaɓal (ritual/physical cleanliness, wuduu-adjacent) and from BASELINE ceniiɗo/ceniinde (ongoing moral holiness). This is a punctiliar cleansing from sin’s guilt through Christ’s atoning blood (1 John 1:7, 1:9) — a third, distinct category with no counterpart in Islamic ritual-purity or discretionary-mercy frameworks.
Born Of God
Approved rendering: jibinaaɗo Alla
Transliteration: jibinaaɗo Alla
Doctrine: Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth
Spiritual regeneration; new birth from God as the root cause of a genuine capacity to love as God loves (1 John 2:29; 3:9; 4:7; 5:1, 4, 18). Builds on the jibin- root shared with the baseline’s peewal jibinaangal (imputed righteousness) for morphological consistency, but denotes a distinct doctrine (regeneration, not forensic crediting) and must be taught as such.
Advocate
Approved rendering: torɗo wonande men e Baaba
Transliteration: torɗo wonande men e Baaba
Doctrine: The Incarnation and Antichrist
Built on the baseline’s torgol wonande (intercession) root. Christ as believers’ advocate before the Father when they sin (1 John 2:1). Must be distinguished from the Islamic concept of shafa’a (intercession of prophets/saints at judgment), itself contested across Islamic schools; requires explicit theological framing either way.
Jesus Christ The Righteous
Approved rendering: Yeesu Kiristu, Peewɗo
Transliteration: Yeesu Kiristu, Peewɗo
Doctrine: The Incarnation and Antichrist
Reuses the baseline peewal root. Christ’s own righteousness (not the believer’s) qualifies him to advocate for sinners before the Father (1 John 2:1).
Deny The Son
Approved rendering: yeddude
Transliteration: yeddude
Doctrine: The Incarnation and Antichrist
Explicit rejection/repudiation of the Son, the defining mark of the antichrist spirit (1 John 2:22-23). Note the doctrinal inversion: mainstream regional Islamic Tawhid doctrine itself formally ‘denies the Son’ in exactly this sense — this is direct confrontation with majority regional doctrine, not merely a marginal ancient heresy as in John’s original setting. Handle with pastoral care alongside doctrinal clarity.
False Prophets
Approved rendering: annabi fenaaɗo
Transliteration: annabi fenaaɗo
Doctrine: Testing the Spirits
Built on the baseline root annabi. Those falsely claiming divine inspiration, tested by the incarnation confession (1 John 4:1). Given the exceptional prestige of prophetic authority in regional Islamic self-understanding (Muhammad as ‘Seal of the Prophets’), must be scoped explicitly to John’s specific historical opponents, not a blanket claim about prophetic figures generally.
Anointing
Approved rendering: ƴiƴŋal Ruuhu Ceniiɗo
Transliteration: ƴiƴŋal Ruuhu Ceniiɗo
Doctrine: The Incarnation and Antichrist
Rejected alternatives: barke (never use; the forbidden marabout-associated blessing/spiritual power)
The Holy Spirit’s teaching gift/endowment received by every believer, not an elite class of specially-anointed teachers (1 John 2:20, 27). Must never be confused with barke, the baseline’s forbidden-substitution term; this anointing is the Spirit’s gift to every believer, categorically different from person-mediated power transferred through a religious specialist.
Eternal Life
Approved rendering: nguurndam duumiiɗam
Transliteration: nguurndam duumiiɗam
Doctrine: Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life
Life that is unending, possessed now by believers who have the Son (1 John 1:2; 2:25; 3:14-15; 5:11-13, 20), not merely a future reward. Islamic eschatology treats paradise-entry (aljanna) as a future reward contingent on Allah’s mercy weighed against a lifetime of deeds; must be stated explicitly as a present-tense certainty every time, never softened into a future hope alone.
Day Of Judgment
Approved rendering: ñalaande ñaawoore
Transliteration: ñalaande ñaawoore
Doctrine: Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life
The final eschatological reckoning before God (1 John 4:17). Genuine strong common ground with Islamic Yawm al-Qiyama/Yawm ad-Din — but the basis of confidence differs sharply (union with Christ/perfected love vs. mizan, the weighing of deeds); this distinction must be taught explicitly, not left implicit.
Testimony
Approved rendering: seedaagal
Transliteration: seedaagal
Doctrine: Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life
God’s own witness/evidence concerning his Son, the ground of certain faith (1 John 5:9-11). This vocabulary family runs a structural (formal) parallel to the Islamic shahada (testimony/confession of faith) and must be handled with the same care the baseline gives Almasiihu: shared form, sharply different content.
Testify
Approved rendering: seedaade
Transliteration: seedaade
Doctrine: Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life
To bear eyewitness, legal-style testimony (1 John 1:2; 4:14; 5:6-10). Same shahada-adjacent caution as seedaagal applies.
Water Blood Spirit
Approved rendering: ndiyam, ƴiiƴam, Ruuhu
Transliteration: ndiyam, ƴiiƴam, Ruuhu
Doctrine: Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life
Rejected alternatives: Do NOT import the Comma Johanneum’s explicit Trinitarian gloss at 5:7 (KJV-only textual tradition, absent from modern critical text and all surveyed Fulfulde NT translations) — never insert this into teaching materials as if it strengthens Trinitarian teaching
Three witnesses testifying together to Christ’s identity (1 John 5:6-8). Adds a further Trinitarian-adjacent triadic structure to an already Trinity-loaded letter; teach as testimony to Christ specifically, without over-reading beyond the text’s own claim, and without reintroducing the disputed Comma Johanneum text absent from the critical Greek text this and all attested Fulfulde translations follow.
The World
Approved rendering: aduna
Transliteration: aduna
Doctrine: Overcoming the World
The moral-spiritual system opposed to God, not the created order itself (1 John 2:15-17; 4:4-5; 5:4-5, 19). Arabic-derived, shared with Islamic dunya, carrying the existing dunya/akhira dichotomy — genuine point of contact, but must be distinguished from a purely temporal/material category. Explicitly define as an active moral system opposed to God’s love, not merely ‘this present life’ vs. ‘the next.‘
Overcome The World
Approved rendering: foolde aduna
Transliteration: foolde aduna
Doctrine: Overcoming the World
Victory over the world’s opposition to God, achieved through faith (1 John 5:4-5), not human strength or strategy. The foold- root carries strong military-conquest resonance given living regional historical memory of the 19th-century Fulani-led Sokoto Caliphate’s jihad campaigns; must be explicitly and repeatedly taught as moral-spiritual victory through faith alone, never political or military conquest.
Idols
Approved rendering: sanamuuji
Transliteration: sanamuuji
Doctrine: Overcoming the World
Objects of false worship; the letter’s closing exhortation (1 John 5:21). Double-edged: genuine shared anti-idolatry conviction (Arabic-derived, shared with Islamic anti-shirk vocabulary), but risk of a sophisticated reader turning the term back on this letter’s own Trinitarian/incarnational content, framing devotion to Christ-as-God as itself shirk. Anticipate this rhetorical reversal directly in teaching materials, not left for readers to raise unaddressed.
Spirit Of Truth And Error
Approved rendering: ruuhu goonga / ruuhu majjere
Transliteration: ruuhu goonga / ruuhu majjere
Doctrine: Testing the Spirits
Contrasting spiritual sources behind true and false teaching (1 John 4:6). Same jinn-discernment caution as ɗaɓɓitde ruuhuuji applies; maintain strict capitalization/typographic discipline as a doctrinal-fencing device against confusion with Ruuhu Ceniiɗo.
Medium Risk Terms
Jesus
Approved rendering: Yeesu
Transliteration: Yeesu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Iisa (the Quranic Arabic form, reserve only for explicit interfaith-dialogue contexts)
Inherited from Romans package for 1 John curriculum. Yeesu is used in existing Fulfulde/Pular Christian Bible translation work. Iisa is the Quranic form used in Islamic Fulfulde religious vocabulary; using it in this curriculum could suggest the Quranic figure is simply interchangeable with the biblical Jesus, so Yeesu must be used consistently, including in 1 John’s Christological confessions (4:15; 5:1, 5, 20).
Father
Approved rendering: Baaba
Transliteration: Baaba
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Inherited from Romans package for 1 John curriculum. Baaba (capitalized) for God as Father is standard and doctrinally clear, resonating with strong Fulani family and lineage values; used throughout 1 John (1:2-3; 2:1, 15-16, 22-24; 3:1; 4:14).
Intercession
Approved rendering: torgol wonande
Transliteration: torgol wonande
Doctrine: Prayer and Intercession
Inherited from Romans package for 1 John curriculum. Root reused for the new compound ‘torɗo wonande men e Baaba’ (advocate, 1 John 2:1), Christ’s intercessory role before the Father when believers sin.
Seed Of David
Approved rendering: geɗal Daawuda
Transliteration: geɗal Daawuda
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
Inherited from Romans package for 1 John curriculum. Morphological pattern (geɗal + possessor) deliberately reused for the new compound ‘geɗal Alla’ (‘seed of God,’ 1 John 3:9), resonating with Fulani lineage/genealogy values for the believer’s regenerating spiritual principle.
Spiritual Gifts
Approved rendering: dokkal Ruuhu
Transliteration: dokkal Ruuhu
Doctrine: Spiritual Gifts
Rejected alternatives: barke (Sufi-associated blessing/spiritual power, avoid as a substitute)
Inherited from Romans package for 1 John curriculum. Establishes the standing forbidden-substitution boundary against barke that must be explicitly extended to the new term ‘anointing’ (ƴiƴŋal Ruuhu Ceniiɗo, 1 John 2:20, 27).
Holy
Approved rendering: ceniiɗo
Transliteration: ceniiɗo
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: laaɓɗo (physically clean, reserve for ritual/physical cleanliness only)
Inherited from Romans package for 1 John curriculum. Root shared with Ruuhu Ceniiɗo (Holy Spirit); must remain distinct from laaɓɗo (ritual/physical cleanliness) and from the new term laɓɓinde (cleanse from sin’s guilt via Christ’s blood, 1 John 1:7, 1:9), a third, related-but-distinct category.
Adoption
Approved rendering: jaɓugol wonande ɓiɗɗo
Transliteration: jaɓugol wonande ɓiɗɗo
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Inherited from Romans package for 1 John curriculum. This doctrine is the mandatory theological anchor for the new term ‘ɓiɓɓe Alla’ (children of God, 1 John 3:1-2, 3:10): believers’ filial status must be taught as adoptive and derived, never as ontologically identical to Christ’s unique Sonship (Ɓiɗɗo Alla).
Prophet
Approved rendering: annabi
Transliteration: annabi
Doctrine: Inspiration of Scripture
Inherited from Romans package for 1 John curriculum. Root reused for the new compound ‘annabi fenaaɗo’ (false prophets, 1 John 4:1), which must be scoped explicitly to John’s specific historical opponents denying the incarnation, not a general polemic against other traditions’ prophetic figures, given the exceptional prestige of prophetic office in regional Islamic self-understanding.
Law
Approved rendering: sariya
Transliteration: sariya
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Inherited from Romans package for 1 John curriculum. Root reused for the new compound ‘tooñange sariya’ (lawlessness, 1 John 3:4) and kept distinct from the new term ‘yamiroore’ (the relational love-commandment, 1 John 3:23; 4:21), which must not collapse into a Sharia-observance framework.
Covenant
Approved rendering: alkawal
Transliteration: alkawal
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
Inherited from Romans package for 1 John curriculum. Reused for 1 John 2:25’s ‘promise’ (epaggelia) of eternal life given by the Son.
Glory
Approved rendering: manaango
Transliteration: manaango
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: teddungal (reserve for human honor/dignity in Pulaaku contexts, avoid as the primary term for God’s glory)
Inherited from Romans package for 1 John curriculum. The manaango/teddungal fence directly relevant to distinguishing the new term ‘mantoore nguurndam’ (pride of life, 1 John 2:16 — sinful worldly boastfulness) from the legitimate Pulaaku value of teddungal, which must never be confused with either divine glory or worldly pride.
Beloved
Approved rendering: giggaaɗo / giggaaɓe
Transliteration: giggaaɗo / giggaaɓe
Doctrine: God is Light and God is Love
Term of endearment derived from giggol; John’s pastoral address to his readers (2:7; 3:2, 21; 4:1, 7, 11). Must retain covenantal warmth grounded in God’s own love, not read as generic politeness.
Walk Conduct
Approved rendering: yahde
Transliteration: yahde
Doctrine: Fellowship with God and One Another
Figurative for habitual moral conduct/manner of life (1 John 1:6-7; 2:6, 11). Must be introduced clearly as conduct/lifestyle, not confused with literal walking.
Brother
Approved rendering: musiɗɗo
Transliteration: musiɗɗo
Doctrine: Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth
Ordinary Fulfulde kinship term, deeply loaded with Pulaaku’s ethnic-clan categories. Must be explicitly taught as extending to all fellow believers across ethnic lines (first occurrence 1 John 2:9), tying to the baseline’s christian_identity_in_christ doctrine; a genuinely costly redefinition for Fulani converts specifically.
Faithful And Just
Approved rendering: gomɗinaaɗo e peewɗo
Transliteration: gomɗinaaɗo e peewɗo
Doctrine: Confession and Forgiveness of Sin
Built on baseline roots gomɗinal (faith) and peewal (righteousness). God’s own trustworthy and righteous character guarantees that confessed sin will be forgiven (1 John 1:9).
Lawlessness
Approved rendering: tooñange sariya
Transliteration: tooñange sariya
Doctrine: Confession and Forgiveness of Sin
Built on the baseline root sariya (Law). Sin defined at its root as rebellion against God’s own revealed moral order (1 John 3:4) — must not be narrowed to failure of Sharia-style legal observance specifically.
Sin Unto Death
Approved rendering: bakkaatu yahdi e maayde
Transliteration: bakkaatu yahdi e maayde
Doctrine: Confession and Forgiveness of Sin
A pastoral-care distinction John draws for intercessory prayer (1 John 5:16-17), not a fixed checklist of unforgivable sins; requires careful pastoral framing to avoid readers constructing an anxious enumerated list.
Seed Of God
Approved rendering: geɗal Alla
Transliteration: geɗal Alla
Doctrine: Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth
The generative, abiding regenerating principle God plants in the believer (1 John 3:9). Deliberate morphological echo of the baseline’s geɗal Daawuda (seed of David); must be explicitly glossed as a spiritual/regenerating principle, not literal biological descent, on first use.
Lay Down Life
Approved rendering: waɗde nguurndam mun wonande
Transliteration: waɗde nguurndam mun wonande
Doctrine: Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth
Sacrificial self-giving, following Christ’s own pattern (1 John 3:16). Resonates positively with Pulaaku’s valuing of courage and self-sacrifice for community — a genuine bridge — but the specific object (dying for fellow believers) must be made explicit rather than assumed as generic communal heroism.
Commandment
Approved rendering: yamiroore
Transliteration: yamiroore
Doctrine: Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth
Built on the same root as the baseline’s yamiroore Linjiila. The unified love-command (love God and love brother), flowing from new birth (1 John 3:23; 4:21). Must be kept distinct from BASELINE sariya (Law/Sharia) — a relational love-command, not a legal code observed for merit.
Keep Commandments
Approved rendering: reende yamirooje
Transliteration: reende yamirooje
Doctrine: Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth
‘To keep/guard the commandments’ (1 John 2:3-4; 3:22, 24; 5:2-3) — ongoing obedience as the evidence, not the ground, of knowing Christ. Must not read as merit-earning legal observance.
Flesh Lust
Approved rendering: tuuyo ɓanndu
Transliteration: tuuyo ɓanndu
Doctrine: Overcoming the World
Disordered bodily desire, one of the three characteristic desires of ‘the world’ (1 John 2:16). Distinct sense from the incarnation-flesh entry (ɓanndu alone); keep the two Fulfulde compounds theologically separate.
Devil
Approved rendering: Ibliisa
Transliteration: Ibliisa
Doctrine: The Incarnation and Antichrist
Genuine shared vocabulary with Islamic Iblis; broadly compatible category (a personal, rebellious spiritual adversary, 1 John 3:8, 10). Differing origin-narratives are a secondary teaching point, not a translation-substitution risk.
Confidence Boldness
Approved rendering: hardeende
Transliteration: hardeende
Doctrine: Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life
Courage to stand without shame or fear before God, in prayer (3:21) and at the final judgment (4:17). Must be anchored explicitly to 4:10’s propitiation doctrine each time it occurs — confidence rests on Christ’s finished atoning work, not a favorable outcome in a deeds-weighing process.
Lust Of The Eyes
Approved rendering: tuuyo gite
Transliteration: tuuyo gite
Doctrine: Overcoming the World
One of the three characteristic disordered desires of the world-system (1 John 2:16). Descriptive compound; low structural ambiguity.
Pride Of Life
Approved rendering: mantoore nguurndam
Transliteration: mantoore nguurndam
Doctrine: Overcoming the World
Sinful boastfulness in worldly life/possessions (1 John 2:16). Requires care to distinguish sinful worldly boastfulness from the legitimate Pulaaku value of teddungal (dignity/honor), already fenced off from divine glory (manaango) in the baseline.
Victory
Approved rendering: fooleeru
Transliteration: fooleeru
Doctrine: Overcoming the World
The specific means of victory over the world: faith (1 John 5:4). Keep clearly linked to faith as the means, not force, given the same military-conquest resonance risk as foolde aduna.
Know Discern
Approved rendering: anndude
Transliteration: anndude
Doctrine: Testing the Spirits
Relational, experiential knowledge/discernment, used throughout the letter as the mark of genuine relationship with God. Must be distinguished from BASELINE gomɗinal (faith/trust): anndude is relational acquaintance flowing from faith, not faith itself.
Sent
Approved rendering: nulaa
Transliteration: nulaa
Doctrine: The Incarnation and Antichrist
Verb form built on the baseline’s nul- root (shared with nulaaɗo, apostle). Describes God the Father’s sending of the Son into the world (1 John 4:9-10, 14), the ultimate ‘sending’ behind all human apostleship. Must be grammatically distinguished from ordinary apostolic sending, since this is a categorically different, unrepeatable sending.
Manifested
Approved rendering: feeñinaa
Transliteration: feeñinaa
Doctrine: The Incarnation and Antichrist
Disclosure of something previously hidden into visible, historical form (1 John 1:2; 3:2, 5, 8; 4:9). When applied to the incarnation itself (as in 3:5, 8 and by extension 4:9), it inherits the Critical-adjacent sensitivity of that doctrine and should be taught alongside it, not treated as a merely neutral verb of appearance.
Obligation Debt Love
Approved rendering: en fotii
Transliteration: en fotii
Doctrine: Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth
‘It is fitting/required of us’ (1 John 4:11) — believers’ love for one another is a responsive debt flowing from having received God’s prior love, not a means of earning it. Care must be taken that this reads as gratitude-response, not as a meritorious work that itself earns standing before God, which would collapse back into the deeds-weighing framework flagged Critical for arjunde/grace and giggol/love.
Low Risk Terms
Fellowship
Approved rendering: diisnondiral
Transliteration: diisnondiral
Doctrine: Christian Fellowship
Inherited from Romans package for 1 John curriculum. A descriptive term for shared community/mutual relationship; confirm regional naturalness with native speakers given limited established Christian devotional vocabulary. In 1 John, must cover both vertical fellowship with the Father/Son (1:3, 1:6-7) and horizontal fellowship among believers (1:3, 1:7).
Joy
Approved rendering: weltaare
Transliteration: weltaare
Doctrine: Fellowship with God and One Another
Standard term. The purpose of apostolic proclamation is the readers’ shared joy (1 John 1:4).
Liar
Approved rendering: fenoowo
Transliteration: fenoowo
Doctrine: Confession and Forgiveness of Sin
A plain, accurate descriptive term (1:6, 2:4, 2:22, 4:20); the baseline’s caution about fenaande applies only to its use as a substitute for the doctrine of sin, not to this general sense.
Lie Verb
Approved rendering: fenaade
Transliteration: fenaade
Doctrine: Confession and Forgiveness of Sin
Verb form, root shared with fenoowo (liar). ‘We lie’ — claiming fellowship with God while walking in darkness is itself a lie (1 John 1:6).
Little Children
Approved rendering: ɓiɓɓe
Transliteration: ɓiɓɓe
Doctrine: Fellowship with God and One Another
Affectionate pastoral address (‘teknia’/‘paidia,’ 1 John 2:1, 12-14, 18, 28; 3:7, 18; 4:4; 5:21). NOTE: distinct from the doctrinal compound ɓiɓɓe Alla (children of God); the plain form without ‘Alla’ carries no independent theological weight and must not be confused with the Critical-risk theological term.
Cain
Approved rendering: Kayinu
Transliteration: Kayinu
Doctrine: Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth
Standard transliterated proper name; negative moral exemplar of hatred leading to murder (1 John 3:12).
Murderer
Approved rendering: waroowo
Transliteration: waroowo
Doctrine: Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth
Standard term. Hatred is morally equated with murder in its root disposition (1 John 3:15).
Hate
Approved rendering: añde
Transliteration: añde
Doctrine: Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth
Standard term for active hostility/enmity toward a brother, not mere indifference (1 John 4:20).
