Doctrine Analysis

Doctrine Analysis — 2 John — English → Fulfulde

Purpose and Scope

This document provides the full doctrine matrix for 2 John, covering every verse of the letter’s single chapter (1:1–13), per the PRD Phase 1 full-book coverage mandate. The core passage (2 John 1:4–11) is the theological anchor of the curriculum’s four named doctrines — Walking in Truth and Love, Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation, Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment, and Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ — but this matrix extends analysis to the greeting (1:1–3) and closing (1:12–13) as well, since both sections carry load-bearing doctrinal content (apostolic authority, corporate election, the Father-Son relationship, ordinary fellowship) that must not be silently omitted.

This matrix is doctrine-for-doctrine and tier-for-tier consistent with doctrine_risk_registry.json (16 doctrines, same names, same risk tiers, same review routing). Minor summary-arithmetic in the registry’s own risk_summary block has been recomputed below directly from its 16 per-doctrine entries for internal consistency; no doctrine names or individual tiers have been altered from the registry.

Section A — Greeting and Apostolic Foundation (2 John 1:1–3)

DoctrineSupporting Passages (2 John)RiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
Apostolic/Pastoral Authority of the Elder1:1Highmawɗo (“elder”) must be held apart from Islamic clerical/spiritual-authority titles current in Fulani communities (shehu, alfa, marabout, Sufi tariqa leadership); readers must not map the letter’s pastoral authority onto an Islamic religious-office framework, parallel to the baseline’s nulaaɗo/rasuulu distinction for “apostle.”Human theologian
Corporate Identity and Election of the Addressees1:1MediumThe Greek’s genuine individual-vs-corporate ambiguity (“the elect lady” as a woman or a personified church) must not be silently resolved in either direction; suɓaaɗo (built on the baseline’s suɓagol/election root) requires consistent rendering across 1:1 and 1:13.Native speaker review
Grace, Mercy, and Peace from the Father and the Son1:3CriticalInherits the baseline’s Critical Grace doctrine in full (Arjunde must never default to a piety-conditioned or barke-style reciprocal framework); additionally, this verse names grace/peace as flowing jointly from “God the Father and… Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father,” pressing directly on the Sonship/Deity of Christ doctrine below within the very first sentence of the letter.Human theologian
Sonship and Deity of Christ (introduced)1:3 (fully developed at 1:9)Critical”The Son of the Father” (Ɓiɗɗo Baaba) is stated as fact in the letter’s opening greeting, before any argument is made — this front-loads the letter’s central Tawhid/shirk flashpoint from the first verses onward and must not be softened even in a greeting-register passage.Human theologian

Section B — Walking in Truth and Love (2 John 1:4–6)

(Core curriculum doctrine: Walking in Truth and Love)

DoctrineSupporting Passages (2 John)RiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
Walking in Truth1:1, 1:2, 1:4Highgoonga is a deeply established Pulaaku personal-virtue word (truthfulness/honesty in social dealings) that risks narrowing John’s fuller Johannine sense of the revealed apostolic truth of Christ into mere personal sincerity; the metaphorical “walk = conduct of life” idiom (yahde e) is not self-evidently metaphorical in Fulfulde and risks a literal-movement reading absent explicit teaching.Human theologian
The Love Command1:5, 1:6Highyiɗde has a broad ordinary range covering “to want/desire/like” as well as “to love”; the letter’s self-giving, covenantal, obedience-linked love risks flattening into mere fondness or preference. No crystallized separate theological term yet exists in Fulfulde Christian literature to mark this distinction from ordinary usage.Human theologian
Commandment Distinguished from Comprehensive Law1:4, 1:5, 1:6Mediumyamiroore (the single, focused love-command) must be kept distinct from sariya (the baseline’s term for Mosaic Law, sharing a root with “Sharia”); readers must not assimilate John’s one command into a Sharia-style comprehensive legal code governing all conduct.Native speaker review

Section C — Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation (2 John 1:7–9)

(Core curriculum doctrine: Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation; also anchors Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ)

DoctrineSupporting Passages (2 John)RiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
Denial of the Incarnation by Deceivers1:7CriticalThe letter’s central doctrinal flashpoint. No crystallized single Fulfulde term exists for “came in the flesh”; the unresolved choice between ardii e teewu (raw materiality, preserves anti-docetic force, risks crudeness) and ardii e balndu (dignified, risks softening the materiality claim) must be confirmed by theologian and native speaker before deployment. Islamic theology treats God taking human/physical form as shirk; this must be taught with direct, careful explanation.Human theologian
Confession of Christ’s Incarnate Coming1:7Highseedaade sits near the semantic space of the Islamic shahada, the foundational Muslim confession of faith. The shared “confession/testimony” structure is a genuine point of contact, but the confessed content — Jesus Christ’s coming in real human flesh — is entirely different and must be made explicit every time, not assumed transferable from the shahada’s monotheistic content.Human theologian
The Deceiver and the Antichrist1:7Critical”Deceiver” and “antichrist” sit directly adjacent to well-articulated Islamic apocalyptic vocabulary — false prophets, and especially the deceiving eschatological figure of ad-Dajjal, deeply embedded in regional Islamic teaching. Antikiristu is a transliterated neologism with no prior Fulfulde attestation. Readers risk mapping this letter’s present-tense, doctrinal-denial definition wholesale onto the future-world-ruler Dajjal framework unless explicitly taught otherwise.Human theologian
The World as the Sphere of Deception1:7Mediumaduna is a widespread Sahelian Arabic-derived loanword cognate with Arabic dunya (this-worldly life, contrasted with akhira); a genuine point of contact, but not a perfect match for John’s morally charged sense of a world actively opposed to Christ’s truth — this nuance requires explicit teaching rather than assumed equivalence.Native speaker review
Sonship and Deity of Christ (fully developed)1:9CriticalV.9’s claim that denying the Son means “not having God” at all is one of the sharpest NT statements of the Father-Son’s inseparability, directly countering strict Tawhid doctrine at the heart of Fulani Islamic scholarly and reform tradition (echoing the Sokoto Caliphate’s reformist jihad tradition and Quran 112’s denial that God has a son). Must never be softened; must be explained with direct engagement of this well-known objection.Human theologian
Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ1:9Criticaljaŋgirgol Kiristu is a newly coined compound with no prior attestation in Fulfulde Christian literature, requiring theologian confirmation given this language’s thinner translation tradition; its root jaŋg- also underlies jaŋgirde (Quranic school), an association that must be explicitly framed rather than defaulted to. ñiiɓde (“abide”) carries strong Fulani pastoralist settling-versus-wandering resonance — a positive bridge only if taught as relational perseverance in Christ’s teaching, not mere physical settlement.Human theologian

Section D — Watchfulness and Eschatological Reward (2 John 1:8)

DoctrineSupporting Passages (2 John)RiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
Eschatological Reward for Perseverance1:8MediumThe wage/payment root of njoɓdi risks being heard through a deeds-earn-reward lens — the same theological risk the baseline flags for Grace against Islamic piety-conditioned soteriology. This reward must be explicitly framed as the fruit of perseverance within a salvation already secured by grace, not a separate merit economy running parallel to the letter’s grace-greeting in 1:3.Native speaker review

Section E — Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment (2 John 1:10–11)

(Core curriculum doctrine: Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment)

DoctrineSupporting Passages (2 John)RiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment1:10, 1:11CriticalThe single most culturally loaded instruction in the letter for a Fulfulde-speaking audience. Hospitality (galle) and the formal jam-greeting exchange are foundational, non-negotiable markers of Pulaaku’s teddungal (dignity) and semteende (modesty). A command to refuse both risks being heard as commanding abandonment of core Fulani cultural identity rather than a narrowly targeted refusal of doctrinal endorsement to a known denier of the Incarnation specifically. Mandatory joint theologian and native-speaker review before deployment.Human theologian
Complicity in False Teaching1:11HighThe verb chosen for this negative “complicity in evil” sense (jokkondirde e) must be kept clearly distinct from the baseline’s positive fellowship term diisnondiral; a shared root for both senses risks blurring genuine Christian community with complicity in doctrinal error.Human theologian

Section F — Closing Fellowship and Greetings (2 John 1:12–13)

DoctrineSupporting Passages (2 John)RiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
Ordinary Fellowship and Closing Greetings1:12, 1:13LowLow doctrinal risk, but the ordinary closing-greeting verb (salminaa mo) must be kept visibly distinct in Fulfulde from the Critical-risk withheld-greeting prohibition of vv.10–11, so learners clearly see that normal social greetings, correspondence, and the joy of face-to-face fellowship are not what the letter forbids.Automated review

All 13 verses of 2 John’s single chapter are represented above (Sections C and D both draw on 1:7–9 material and 1:8 specifically is treated separately for its distinct reward doctrine; no verse range is left unreviewed). No section is silently omitted, per the full-book coverage mandate — every verse contributes to at least one doctrine entry above, and Sections A and F (greeting and closing) are included even though they lie outside the core passage (1:4–11), since the mandate requires full-chapter coverage regardless of the curriculum’s theological anchor.

Note on the source registry: doctrine_risk_registry.json’s own risk_summary block records Critical:7 / High:5 / Medium:4 / Low:1 (total 17) and total_requiring_theologian_review:12. Direct enumeration of its 16 per-doctrine entries yields Critical:6 / High:5 / Medium:4 / Low:1 (total 16) and theologian-review count 11, as tabulated above. Every individual doctrine name, definition, risk tier, and review routing in this document is reproduced exactly as recorded in the registry; only the top-level summary arithmetic has been recomputed for internal consistency. This discrepancy should be flagged to the registry maintainer for correction in the next version increment, but does not affect the per-doctrine tiers governing Phase 2 routing.

Cross-Reference to Core Glossary and Registries

  • All Fulfulde renderings above follow 08_core_glossary.md exactly; no alternative renderings are introduced in this document.
  • All risk tiers and review routings above follow doctrine_risk_registry.json exactly, doctrine-for-doctrine.
  • Per 12_ai_translation_requirements.md’s escalation rules (inherited from the Romans baseline and extended for this curriculum), every Critical-risk doctrine above requires mandatory human theologian review before any Phase 2 segment touching it is marked approved.

This document must be loaded alongside 04_comparative_theology.md, 08_core_glossary.md, and doctrine_risk_registry.json before Phase 2 translation of 2 John begins.

Critical Risk Doctrines

Grace, Mercy, and Peace from the Father and the Son

Fulfulde name: Arjunde, yurmeende, e jam iwde Baaba e Ɓiɗɗo
Key terms: grace, mercy, peace, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: inherits the baseline’s Critical-risk Grace doctrine in full; Arjunde is Arabic-influenced vocabulary shared with Islamic usage, generally understood there as responsive to piety/deeds, and barke (marabout-associated blessing) must never substitute. The greeting formula’s naming of grace and peace as coming jointly from the Father AND the Son additionally presses directly on the Critical Sonship/Deity of Christ doctrine below.

Sonship and Deity of Christ

Fulfulde name: Ɓiɗɗaagal e Alanaagal Almasiihu
Key terms: Son of the Father, has the Father and the Son, does not have God
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: v.9’s claim that denying the Son means not having God at all is one of the sharpest NT statements of the Father-Son’s inseparability, directly countering the strict Tawhid doctrine at the heart of Fulani Islamic scholarly and reform tradition (echoing the Sokoto Caliphate’s reformist jihad tradition and Quran 112’s denial that God has a son); must never be softened and should be explained with direct engagement of this well-known theological objection.

Denial of the Incarnation by Deceivers

Fulfulde name: salaare Alla wontugol neɗɗo
Key terms: coming in the flesh, did not confess, many deceivers
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: the letter’s central doctrinal flashpoint. No crystallized single Fulfulde term exists for ‘came in the flesh’; the choice between ardii e teewu (raw materiality, anti-docetic force, but risks crudeness) and ardii e balndu (dignified but softer, risking loss of the materiality point) is unresolved pending theologian/native-speaker confirmation. Theologically, God taking human/physical form is shirk in Islamic theology, a direct flashpoint given the depth of regional Islamic scholarly education; must be taught with direct, careful explanation, never sidestepped.

The Deceiver and the Antichrist

Fulfulde name: majjinoowo e Antikiristu
Key terms: deceiver, antichrist, many deceivers have gone out into the world
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: ‘deceiver’ and ‘antichrist’ sit directly adjacent to well-articulated Islamic apocalyptic vocabulary — false prophets and especially the deceiving eschatological figure of ad-Dajjal, deeply embedded in regional Islamic teaching. Antikiristu itself is a transliterated neologism with no prior Fulfulde attestation. Readers risk mapping this letter’s present-tense, doctrinal-denial definition wholesale onto the future-world-ruler Dajjal framework unless explicitly taught otherwise.

Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ

Fulfulde name: ñiiɓde e jaŋgirgol Kiristu
Key terms: abide, the teaching of Christ, goes on ahead
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: jaŋgirgol Kiristu is a newly coined compound with no prior attestation in Fulfulde Christian literature, requiring theologian confirmation per this language’s thinner translation tradition; its root jaŋg- also underlies jaŋgirde, the common word for a Quranic school, an association that must be explicitly framed rather than left to default. ñiiɓde (abide) carries strong Fulani pastoralist settling-versus-wandering resonance that is a positive bridge only if taught as relational perseverance, not mere physical settlement.

Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment

Fulfulde name: hakkille e jaɓal galle wonande majjinooɓe
Key terms: do not receive him into your house, do not give him any greeting
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: this is the single most culturally loaded instruction in the letter for a Fulfulde-speaking audience. Mandatory joint theologian and native-speaker review before deployment.

High Risk Doctrines

Walking in Truth

Fulfulde name: yahde e goonga
Key terms: truth, walk, children walking in the truth
Review routing: Human theologian

goonga is a deeply established Pulaaku personal-virtue word (truthfulness/honesty) which risks narrowing John’s fuller Johannine sense of the revealed apostolic truth of Christ into mere personal sincerity; and the metaphorical ‘walk = conduct of life’ idiom (yahde e) is not self-evidently metaphorical in Fulfulde and could be read as literal movement without explicit teaching.

The Love Command

Fulfulde name: yamiroore yiɗde
Key terms: love one another, this is love, commandment
Review routing: Human theologian

yiɗde has a broad ordinary Fulfulde range covering ‘to want/desire/like’ as well as ‘to love’; the specific self-giving, covenantal love the letter commands risks being flattened into mere fondness or preference, and no crystallized separate theological term yet exists in Fulfulde Christian literature to mark the distinction.

Apostolic/Pastoral Authority of the Elder

Fulfulde name: hattan mawɗo diina
Key terms: the elder, I ask you
Review routing: Human theologian

mawɗo must be carefully distinguished from Islamic religious-authority titles current in Fulani communities (shehu, alfa, marabout), parallel to the baseline’s deliberate choice of nulaaɗo over rasuulu for ‘apostle’; the author’s authority here is apostolic/pastoral, not a parallel Islamic clerical or Sufi spiritual office.

Confession of Christ’s Incarnate Coming

Fulfulde name: seedaade Almasiihu ardii e teewu
Key terms: confess, does not confess
Review routing: Human theologian

seedaade sits near the semantic space of the Islamic shahada, the foundational Islamic confession of faith. This shared ‘confession/testimony’ structure is a genuine point of contact, but the content confessed is entirely different and must be made explicit every time: confessing Jesus Christ’s coming in real human flesh, not a general profession of monotheism.

Complicity in False Teaching

Fulfulde name: jokkondirde e golle bonɗe majjinooɓe
Key terms: takes part in his wicked works, shares in
Review routing: Human theologian

The verb chosen for this negative ‘complicity in evil’ sense (jokkondirde e) must be kept clearly distinct from the baseline’s positive fellowship term diisnondiral; using a shared root for both senses risks blurring genuine Christian community with complicity in doctrinal error.

Medium Risk Doctrines

Commandment Distinguished from Comprehensive Law

Fulfulde name: yamiroore wonande sariya
Key terms: commandment, new commandment, from the beginning
Review routing: Native speaker review

yamiroore (the single, focused love-command) must be kept distinct from sariya (the baseline’s term for Mosaic Law, sharing a root with ‘Sharia’), so readers do not assimilate John’s one command into a Sharia-style total life-code.

Corporate Identity and Election of the Addressees

Fulfulde name: suɓagol kawtal seniiɓe
Key terms: elect lady, her children, elect sister
Review routing: Native speaker review

The individual-vs-corporate ambiguity of ‘the elect lady’ (an individual woman or a personified local church) is genuine in the Greek and must not be silently resolved either way in Fulfulde; the term suɓaaɗo (built on the baseline’s suɓagol/election root) requires consistent rendering across both occurrences.

The World as the Sphere of Deception

Fulfulde name: aduna e majjere
Key terms: gone out into the world, world
Review routing: Native speaker review

aduna is a widespread Sahelian Arabic-derived loanword cognate with Arabic dunya (this-worldly life, contrasted with akhira in Islamic usage); this is a point of contact but not a perfect match for John’s morally charged sense of a world in active opposition to Christ’s truth, and this nuance requires explicit teaching.

Eschatological Reward for Perseverance

Fulfulde name: njoɓdi timmuɗi wonande munyal
Key terms: watch yourselves, lose what we have worked for, full reward
Review routing: Native speaker review

The wage/payment root of njoɓdi risks being heard through a deeds-earn-reward lens, the same theological risk the baseline flags for Grace against Islamic piety-conditioned soteriology; this reward must be explicitly framed as the fruit of perseverance within a salvation already secured by grace, not a separate merit economy.

Low Risk Doctrines

Ordinary Fellowship and Closing Greetings

Fulfulde name: diisnondiral e salminaango
Key terms: greets you, full joy, sister, face to face
Review routing: Automated review

Low doctrinal risk, but the ordinary closing-greeting verb (salminaa mo) must be kept visibly distinct in Fulfulde from the Critical-risk withheld-greeting prohibition of vv.10-11, so that normal social greetings and correspondence are clearly not what the letter forbids.
