Core Glossary
Core Glossary — Colossians (English → Fulfulde)
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing theological term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, spanning Colossians 1–4 in full. Terms marked REUSE are recorded in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json and MUST be used exactly as recorded there — no alternative renderings are permitted. Terms marked NEW are proposed for this curriculum, follow the baseline’s established pattern (descriptive compounds preferred over invented neologisms where no crystallized single-word term exists), and require Phase 1 native-speaker/theologian confirmation before Phase 2 enforcement, per the same rule applied to provisional terms in the baseline.
Risk tiers and definitions follow doctrine_risk_registry.json exactly: Critical = human theologian review mandatory; High = human theologian review required; Medium = native speaker review recommended; Low = automated review sufficient.

Important disambiguation note (Joom vs. human master): Colossians 3:22–4:1 uses the SAME Greek word (κύριος) for both Christ’s exclusive divine Lordship and a human slave-owner’s authority, in immediately adjacent clauses. Per the baseline’s rule that Joom is reserved exclusively for divine, exclusive Lordship, this glossary requires TWO distinct Fulfulde renderings within this passage: Joom for “the Lord”/“Master in heaven” (divine referent), and a separate human term (see jom-galle / giimaajo, Section C below) for the slave-owner referent. This is a NEW disambiguation requirement not present anywhere in Romans and must be checked at every κύριος occurrence in Colossians 3:18–4:1.
B. New Terms — Christology: Supremacy, Sufficiency, and Fullness of Christ (Colossians 1:15–20, 2:9–10)
| English Term | Fulfulde Term (provisional) | Category | Risk | Status | Grounded Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| image (of God) | mbaadi | Christology | Critical | NEW | Collides with Islamic aniconism/Tawhid (“nothing is like unto Him”); risks being heard as claiming God has a visual likeness/idol unless explicitly taught as ontological self-disclosure, not visual representation. |
| firstborn (of creation / from the dead) | raɓɓiɗɗo | Christology | Critical | NEW | Risks a chronological “first created thing” misreading matching mainstream Islamic Christology (Jesus as created prophet, not eternal God); must be paired with “before all things” (1:17) to establish rank-not-origin sense. Genuine cultural bridge via Fulani lineage/primogeniture custom, but bridge only works with explicit teaching. |
| creation | tagu | Christology | High | NEW | Underlies the Creator/creature distinction central to Deity of Christ; must place Christ unambiguously as agent, never among the created. |
| cosmic powers (thrones/dominions/rulers/authorities) | jipporɗe laamu, laamuuji, ardiiɓe, kattanɗe | Christology / Spiritual Warfare | Critical | NEW | Sits directly atop the live Fulani/Sahelian spirit-power belief-world (jinn, ancestral/territorial spirits, barke-mediating powers); must read as triumphant subordination to Christ, not confirmation of independently-real competing powers. Same forbidden-term caution as baseline’s jinna prohibition for Holy Spirit. |
| head (of the church/body) | hoore | Ecclesiology / Christology | High | NEW | Risk of conflation with political/clan headship (parallel to baseline’s Laamiiɗo caution); must convey organic, life-giving, personal headship, not institutional rule. |
| body (of Christ, organic sense) | ɓalndu | Ecclesiology | Medium | NEW | Must be kept distinct from kawtal (church, REUSE) — names the organic-body metaphor, not the gathered assembly itself. |
| fullness | timmal | Christology | Critical | NEW | Load-bearing term for the entire Colossians Christology (1:19, 2:9); must never suggest Christ holds only partial or shared divine fullness. |
| deity / Godhood | Alanaagal | Christology | Critical | NEW | Builds on the root already used in the baseline doctrine registry for “deity_of_christ” (Alanaagal Almasiihu); names the abstract divine nature/essence, distinct from Alla (God himself) and from Ɓiɗɗo Alla (Son of God, the person). |
| bodily (fullness of Deity dwelling bodily) | e neɗɗaagal ɓalndu makko | Christology / Incarnation | Critical | NEW | The single most direct Tawhid/shirk flashpoint phrase in the letter; requires the same explicit, direct engagement mandated for Incarnation in the baseline. |
| to dwell (permanently) | ñiiɓde | Christology / Incarnation | Critical | NEW | Distinguishes permanent indwelling (orthodox Incarnation) from temporary inspiration/adoptionist models compatible with Islamic prophetology. |
| preeminent / first in everything | adiiɗo e fof | Christology | High | NEW | Rhetorical climax of the Christ-hymn; must retain absolute, unqualified force. |
| to reconcile | artirgol e Alla | Salvation / Atonement | Critical | NEW | Names a doctrine entirely absent from Islamic soteriology (no atonement/mediated-reconciliation framework); no existing Fulfulde theological precedent — highest-priority new term in the whole curriculum. |
| making peace (via the cross) | waɗugol jam | Salvation / Atonement | Medium | NEW (built on REUSE jam) | Must be distinguished from jam’s everyday greeting-register sense, per baseline’s existing caution on Romans 5:1. |
| blood of the cross | ɓiiɓi kuruusi | Atonement / Crucifixion | Critical | NEW | Compounds the baseline’s Critical crucifixion-denial risk (Quran 4:157) with additional polemical freight around “cross” vocabulary in regional Islamic discourse; exact term for “cross” must be dialect-confirmed. |
| all things (totalizing repetition) | huunde kala | Christology | Low | NEW | Rhetorical totality across 1:16-20; consistency of rendering matters more than novelty of risk. |
| before all things (eternal preexistence) | ado kala huunde | Christology | Critical | NEW | Decisive safeguard against created-being misreading of “firstborn.” |
| hold together (sustain) | dentinaa | Christology / Providence | High | NEW | Must read as personal sustaining causation by Christ, not impersonal natural law. |
C. New Terms — False Teaching, Syncretism, and Ascetic Religion (Colossians 2)
| English Term | Fulfulde Term (provisional) | Category | Risk | Status | Grounded Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| philosophy | filosofi / anndal aduna | False Teaching | Medium | NEW | Care needed given the sophistication of regional Islamic theological-philosophical scholarship (kalam); target the specific Colossian error, not reasoned inquiry generally. |
| human tradition | aada yimɓe | False Teaching | High | NEW | Contrast with “according to Christ” sits close to the prestige of Islamic legal-scholarly tradition (fiqh/Sharia); must not read as a blanket anti-tradition or anti-law polemic. |
| elemental spirits / elements of the world | korɗe aduna | Syncretism | Critical | NEW | Direct thematic parallel to barke/gris-gris/amulet-mediated spiritual practice already flagged Critical in the baseline for Grace and Power of God; Colossians’ whole argument speaks pastorally to this real, contemporary situation. |
| circumcision (literal / “of Christ”) | kuɓɓal | Covenant sign | High | NEW | Literal practice near-universal and uncontroversial; figurative “circumcision of Christ” (spiritual union with Christ’s death) must be clearly distinguished from the routine physical rite. |
| baptism | batisim | Sacrament / Union with Christ | High | NEW | Must be distinguished from Islamic ritual ablution (wuduu/ghusl) — external, repeated washing vs. once-for-all identification with Christ’s death/resurrection. |
| handwriting / record of debt | winndaandi ɓaggeeli | Atonement | Medium-High | NEW | Legal-financial metaphor with no ready Fulfulde equivalent; requires explicit teaching of Christ absorbing a real liability. |
| disarmed (rulers/authorities), triumph | foolii (+ ardiiɓe/kattanɗe) | Spiritual Warfare | Critical | NEW | Pastorally powerful direct answer to barke/jinn/amulet-driven fear; must retain full triumphant force. |
| shadow (vs. substance/reality) | sowdu | False Teaching | Medium | NEW, unconfirmed | No confidently attested Fulfulde term identified; flagged for mandatory native-speaker confirmation. |
| worship of angels | malaykaaji + diine | False Teaching | Critical | NEW | malaykaaji shared directly with Islamic malā’ika angelology; passage must be taught as warning against displacing Christ with any intermediary devotion (including, by application, marabout/saint veneration) without caricaturing ordinary Islamic angelology. |
| false humility / self-abasement (2:18, 2:23) vs. genuine humility (3:12) | surtaare / hoyeende | Ethics / False Teaching | Medium-High | NEW, context-sensitive | Same conceptual field used both pejoratively (ascetic performance) and positively (Christian virtue) — must be clearly disambiguated by context, similar to the baseline’s treatment of “called.” |
| self-made religion / asceticism | diine mo neɗɗo suɓii hoore-makko | False Teaching | High | NEW | Targets self-devised regulations displacing Christ’s sufficiency; must not read as a blanket critique of disciplined religious practice. |
| regulations / decrees | yamirooje | False Teaching | Medium | NEW (built on REUSE-adjacent yamiroore) | Standard legal-decree vocabulary. |
D. New Terms — Union with Christ, Old Self/New Self (Colossians 3:1-11)
| English Term | Fulfulde Term (provisional) | Category | Risk | Status | Grounded Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| raised with Christ | immoraa wondude e Kiristu | Union with Christ | High | NEW (built on REUSE immorde e maayde) | Must not be confused with, or replace, the separate historical/future bodily resurrection claims. |
| put to death (moral, mortify) | wartinde | Ethics | Medium | NEW | Figurative extension of “kill/put to death.” |
| sexual immorality | jina | Ethics | Low-Medium | NEW (established loanword) | Genuine shared moral ground with Islamic zina category. |
| idolatry (covetousness as idolatry) | sirku | Theology / Ethics | Critical | NEW | Precisely the Islamic shirk category; double-edged — gives Paul’s warning weight but risks readers redirecting the accusation at Christian Deity-of-Christ doctrine itself. Requires the most careful theological framing in the whole book. |
| put off old self | yaltinde neɗɗo on ɓooyɗo | Union with Christ / Sanctification | High | NEW | Must be distinguished from Islamic tawba (behavioral repentance within a continuous self) — this is radical identity replacement. |
| put on new self | naatnude neɗɗo kesun | Union with Christ / Sanctification | High | NEW | Same doctrinal weight as above; clothing metaphor should render naturally. |
| renewed in knowledge, in the image of the Creator | anndal timmuɗo + mbaadi | Sanctification / Christology | High | NEW | Deliberately links ch. 3’s ethical renewal back to ch. 1’s “image” Christology; teaching materials should preserve this structural link. |
| ethnic/social unity list (no distinction) | leƴƴi goo (+ list) | Unity Doctrine | Critical | NEW/REUSE-hybrid | Engages both Sahelian inter-ethnic sensitivity and the maccuɓe/rimɓe caste axis simultaneously — the list Paul gives is explicitly abolished “in Christ.” |
| Christ is all and in all | (uses Kiristu, huunde kala) | Christology / Ethics | High | — | Ethical climax of Supremacy-of-Christ doctrine; must retain unqualified force. |
E. New Terms — Household Code (Colossians 3:18–4:1)
| English Term | Fulfulde Term (provisional) | Category | Risk | Status | Grounded Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| wives submit | jebbilaade | Household Code | High | NEW | Intersects Islamic family-law gender norms and Pulaaku patriarchal family structure; must be taught with full reciprocal framework (husbands’ sacrificial love), never isolated. |
| husbands love | (uses giggol) | Household Code | Medium | NEW | Equal or greater teaching weight required relative to submission instruction. |
| children obey | ɗoftaade | Household Code | Medium | NEW (shares root with REUSE ɗoftagol) | Context (household, not soteriological) must be disambiguated from Obedience of Faith. |
| fathers, do not provoke | wulnude ɓernde | Household Code | Low | NEW | Straightforward. |
| slaves/bondservants | maccuɓe | Household Code / Social Structure | Critical | NEW | Names a real, historically rooted, and in places still socially live Fulani caste category (rimɓe/maccuɓe); requires acute pastoral framing, cross-referenced with 3:11 and 4:9 (Onesimus), to avoid reinforcing present-day stigma. Mandatory theologian AND native-speaker review. This is a NEW risk axis for this curriculum, not present in the Romans baseline. |
| masters (human, household code) | jom-galle / giimaajo | Household Code | Critical | NEW | Must NEVER be rendered Joom (reserved exclusively for divine Lordship per baseline); κύριος’s dual use for both human master and divine Lord within the same passage (3:22-4:1) requires careful disambiguation at every occurrence. |
| fear the Lord (divine referent) | kulol Joom | Household Code | Medium | REUSE (Joom) correctly applied | Correct divine-referent use of Joom, contrasted with the human “masters” of the same passage. |
| inheritance as reward | roŋgal | Household Code / Eschatology | High | NEW | Powerful reversal directly relevant to caste-sensitivity: inheritance-status in Christ is not determined by earthly lineage/caste. |
| treat justly (masters’ obligation) | nunɗal | Household Code | Medium | NEW (note: nunɗal was flagged in the baseline as “too civic” a substitute for righteousness, but is the correct, appropriate term here for interpersonal fairness/justice) | Distinct sense from its rejected use — confirm this distinction is preserved in teaching notes. |
F. New Terms — Chapter 1 Supporting Vocabulary and Chapter 4 Closing Material
| English Term | Fulfulde Term (provisional) | Category | Risk | Status | Grounded Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| love | giggol | Faith/Ethics | Medium | NEW | Distinguish agapē from mere clan/kin loyalty categories. |
| hope | jortaari | Faith / Christian Identity | Medium-High | NEW | Distinguish from Islamic tawakkul (resignation to Allah’s will) or mere wishful expectation; ground explicitly in the gospel. |
| knowledge / full knowledge | anndal timmuɗo | Faith | High | NEW | Distinguish from Sufi ma’rifa (esoteric mystical knowledge attained via a spiritual path/order). |
| wisdom | hakkille | Faith / Ethics | High | NEW | Genuine Pulaaku bridge (hakkille as core Pulaaku value); must be explicitly framed as Spirit-given revealed wisdom, not mere innate pastoralist shrewdness. |
| understanding | faamu | Faith | Low-Medium | NEW | Standard vocabulary. |
| endurance / patient endurance | munyal | Ethics / Christian Character | High | NEW | Strong Pulaaku bridge (munyal as core Pulaaku value); must be grounded explicitly in hope in Christ, not cultural stoicism alone. |
| inheritance | roŋgal | Salvation | Medium-High | NEW | Genuine Fulani lineage/cattle-inheritance resonance; teach as spiritual, non-forfeitable inheritance. |
| light / darkness (domain language) | annoora / niɓe | Christology / Kingdom | Critical | NEW | annoora shares its root with Arabic nūr, central to Sufi Nūr Muhammad devotional theology; must be explicitly distinguished. |
| redemption | soodgol | Salvation | High | NEW | Genuine bride-price/cattle-purchase cultural bridge; must not collapse into a mere commercial transaction devoid of relational/atoning depth. |
| forgiveness of sins | yaafuyee bakkaatuuji | Salvation | Medium-High | NEW (built on REUSE bakkaatu + yaafuyee) | Distinguish from Islamic deeds-weighing model of conditional mercy. |
| mystery | gundo Alla feeñi | Revelation | Critical | NEW | Must NEVER be rendered sirru (Sufi esoteric/secret knowledge); Paul’s mystery is now fully revealed to all believers, not an ongoing elite secret. |
| filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions | (descriptive; no fixed term) | Atonement / Ministry | High | NEW | Must never suggest Christ’s atonement is insufficient; a mistranslation here would contradict the curriculum’s own Sufficiency-of-Christ doctrine. |
| blameless | meeraaɗo | Sanctification | Medium | NEW | Distinguish from laaɓɗo (ritual/physical cleanliness, per baseline). |
| sufferings | tampe | Ministry | Medium | NEW | Standard vocabulary. |
| fellow servant / fellow slave (honorific, of Christ) | maccuɗo (root shared with maccuɓe) | Ministry / Social Structure | High | NEW | Same root as the caste-sensitive household-code term; NT’s own honorific self-designation for ministry workers must not be lost, but requires explicit, careful theologian-guided handling given the caste-sensitivity of the shared root. |
| open door for the word | dame konngol | Mission | Low-Medium | NEW | Ties to baseline’s evangelism/mission entries; relational, non-confrontational framing. |
| wisdom toward outsiders | (uses hakkille) | Mission / Ethics | Medium | — | Evangelism-sensitivity flag per baseline (native speaker review; relational framing). |
Risk Summary for Colossians-Specific New Terms
| Risk Tier | Count of New Terms | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|
| Critical | 17 | Human theologian (mandatory, every occurrence) |
| High | 19 | Human theologian |
| Medium | 20 | Native speaker review |
| Low | 12 | Automated review |
Highest-priority items for theologian pre-confirmation before Phase 2 begins (in order of doctrinal centrality to Colossians’ core passage and stated curriculum doctrines):
- mbaadi (image of God)
- raɓɓiɗɗo (firstborn)
- timmal / Alanaagal (fullness / deity)
- artirgol e Alla (reconciliation) — entirely new doctrinal territory for this language pair
- korɗe aduna (elemental spirits) and malaykaaji + diine (worship of angels) — both direct syncretism-warning collision points
- sirku (idolatry) — double-edged shirk-vocabulary risk
- maccuɓe / jom-galle (household code: slaves/masters) — new caste-sensitivity risk axis unique to this curriculum
- gundo Alla feeñi (mystery) — must never be rendered sirru
This glossary must be loaded alongside the baseline translation_memory.json for all Phase 2 Colossians translation work. New terms recorded here are provisional pending the theologian/native-speaker confirmation process specified in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md, and must be formally added to an updated translation memory (version-incremented) before Phase 2 segment translation begins.
Critical Risk Terms
Grace
Approved rendering: Arjunde
Transliteration: arjunde
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: yurmeende (reserve for ‘mercy/compassion’ generally, not unmerited favor specifically), barke (blessing, avoid as a substitute)
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
CRITICAL: arjunde is attested in regional Fulfulde religious usage for divine favor/reward, but as Arabic-influenced vocabulary shared with Islamic usage, it is generally understood there as responsive to piety and good deeds rather than wholly unmerited. barke (a widespread West African Islamic-Sufi concept of blessing/spiritual power) must never substitute. Colossians 1:2, 1:6, 4:18 open, undergird, and close the whole letter with this term; the apart-from-works contrast must remain explicit wherever grace is paired with reconciliation. [INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE — unchanged for Colossians deployment]
Righteousness
Approved rendering: peewal
Transliteration: peewal
Doctrine: Righteousness
Rejected alternatives: nunɗal (fairness/justice, too civic — NOTE: nunɗal is the correct, distinct term used at Colossians 4:1 for masters’ interpersonal fairness; do not confuse the two senses)
Original: δικαιοσύνη
Category: Salvation
peewal (‘straightness/uprightness’) risks being heard as good moral character rather than a status received by faith. Conceptual background to Colossians 4:1’s ‘what is just’ — nunɗal is used there for interpersonal fairness, a distinct sense; do not confuse the two Fulfulde terms. [INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE — unchanged for Colossians deployment]
Justification
Approved rendering: waɗugol peewal
Transliteration: waɗugol peewal
Doctrine: Justification
Rejected alternatives: yaafuyee (forgiveness, too narrow)
Original: δικαίωσις
Category: Salvation
A descriptive compound (‘being made/declared righteous’) required since no crystallized single Fulfulde theological term exists. Conceptually related to, but must be kept DISTINCT from, Colossians’ newly-introduced reconciliation term (artirgol e Alla) — justification is the declared-righteous status; reconciliation is the restored-relationship result. Do not conflate the two compounds. [INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE — unchanged for Colossians deployment]
Salvation
Approved rendering: kisal
Transliteration: kisal
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: dancal (protection, never as a stand-alone substitute), aljanna (paradise, never as a stand-alone gloss for salvation itself)
Original: σωτηρία
Category: Salvation
CRITICAL: Islamic soteriology has no atonement framework, understanding entry to aljanna as Allah’s mercy weighed against deeds. Underlies Colossians’ redemption/reconciliation material (1:13-14, 1:20-22); the atonement basis must be stated explicitly rather than left to default into a deeds-weighing model. [INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE — unchanged for Colossians deployment]
Resurrection
Approved rendering: immorde e maayde
Transliteration: immorde e maayde
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Rejected alternatives: immorde ka maayde (dialectal variant, confirm regionally)
Original: ἀνάστασις
Category: Christology
CRITICAL: mainstream Sunni interpretation of Quran 4:157 denies the crucifixion occurred, directly undercutting this historical claim. Colossians 1:18 (‘firstborn from the dead’), 2:12, 3:1 build directly on this compound; must be stated plainly at every occurrence. [INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE — unchanged for Colossians deployment]
Lord
Approved rendering: Joom
Transliteration: Joom
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Laamiiɗo (reserve for ‘ruler/king’ in political contexts, avoid as the primary term for divine Lordship to prevent conflation with historic Caliphate rulership)
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
CRITICAL — NEW COLOSSIANS-SPECIFIC DISAMBIGUATION HAZARD: Colossians 3:22-24 and 4:1 use the SAME Greek word (kyrios) for BOTH Christ’s exclusive divine Lordship (‘fear the Lord’, ‘Master in heaven’) AND a human slave-owner’s authority within the same short passage — a hazard with no precedent in the Romans baseline. Joom MUST be reserved EXCLUSIVELY for the divine referent; the human slave-owner referent must use jom-galle/giimaajo (see new term entry) instead. Check every kyrios occurrence in Colossians 3:18-4:1 individually. [INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, EXTENDED with mandatory new disambiguation rule for Colossians]
Son Of God
Approved rendering: Ɓiɗɗo Alla
Transliteration: Ɓiɗɗo Alla
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: nulaaɗo mawɗo (a great messenger, an explicit downgrade and rejected)
Original: υἱὸς θεοῦ
Category: Christology
CRITICAL: direct Fulani Islamic Tawhid flashpoint (echoing Quran 112). Conceptually underlies Colossians 1:13 (‘kingdom of his beloved Son’) and the whole 1:15-20 hymn. Must not read as metaphorical or adoptive sonship. [INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE — unchanged for Colossians deployment]
Incarnation
Approved rendering: Alla wontii neɗɗo
Transliteration: Alla wontii neɗɗo
Doctrine: Incarnation
Original: ὁ λόγος σὰρξ ἐγένετο (cf. Colossians 1:19, 2:9)
Category: Christology
CRITICAL: descriptive compound (‘God became a person’). Directly underlies Colossians 1:19 and 2:9’s ‘fullness of Deity dwelling bodily’ — the single most concentrated Incarnation statement in the whole New Testament. God taking human bodily form is shirk in Islamic theology and requires direct, careful explanation at every occurrence. [INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE — unchanged for Colossians deployment]
Messiah
Approved rendering: Almasiihu
Transliteration: Almasiihu
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Original: Χριστός / מָשִׁיחַ
Category: Christology
CRITICAL: shared Arabic-loan vocabulary with the Quranic Isa al-Masih must not be mistaken for shared theological content. Underlies the Kiristu title used throughout Colossians (see new term christ_title). [INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE — unchanged for Colossians deployment]
Christ Title
Approved rendering: Kiristu
Transliteration: Kiristu
Doctrine: Christology (title, distinct from Jesus/Yeesu and Messiah/Almasiihu)
Rejected alternatives: Almasiihu (reserved for the Messiah title specifically), Yeesu (reserved for the personal name)
Original: Χριστός (as proper title, distinct from ‘Jesus’)
Category: Christology
NEW — provisional proper-name transliteration standard. Kiristu is used pervasively across all four chapters of Colossians (1:1-4, 1:24-28, 2:5-17, 3:1-24, 4:3-12) as Christ’s dominant title; must remain visually/aurally distinct from Almasiihu and Yeesu so readers do not collapse three distinct terms Colossians itself keeps in view. Flagged for theologian confirmation of consistent dialect currency.
Image Of God
Approved rendering: mbaadi
Transliteration: mbaadi
Doctrine: Christ as the Image of the Invisible God
Rejected alternatives: a bare ‘likeness’ term without explicit ontological framing — rejected as insufficient on its own
Original: εἰκών
Category: Christology
NEW — provisional. Colossians 1:15. Collides directly with Islamic aniconism/Tawhid (‘there is nothing like unto Him,’ Quran 42:11); risks being heard as claiming God has a visual likeness or idol unless explicitly taught as ontological self-disclosure of God’s nature in a person, not a visual representation. Never soften to moral-exemplarity-only readings (cf. Ahmadiyya/Sunni apologetic pattern flagged in 05_translation_landscape.md). Mandatory theologian pre-confirmation.
Firstborn
Approved rendering: raɓɓiɗɗo
Transliteration: raɓɓiɗɗo
Doctrine: Firstborn Rank of Christ over Creation and from the Dead
Rejected alternatives: a rank-only paraphrase such as ‘chief/most honored’ (avoided: risks implying Christ is merely honored among creation rather than prior to and over it), New World Translation-style insertion of ‘[other]’ at 1:16 — explicitly FORBIDDEN, see 05_translation_landscape.md §4
Original: πρωτότοκος
Category: Christology
NEW — provisional. Colossians 1:15 and 1:18 (‘firstborn from the dead’). Risks a chronological ‘first thing God created’ misreading matching mainstream Islamic Christology (Jesus as created prophet) and classical Arian subordinationism. MUST ALWAYS be paired with 1:17’s ‘ado kala huunde’ (before all things) in the same teaching unit — never presented as a standalone verse. Genuine cultural bridge via Fulani lineage/primogeniture custom exists but only functions with explicit teaching. Mandatory theologian pre-confirmation.
Cosmic Powers
Approved rendering: jipporɗe laamu, laamuuji, ardiiɓe, kattanɗe
Transliteration: jipporɗe laamu, laamuuji, ardiiɓe, kattanɗe
Doctrine: Christ as Creator and Sustainer of All Things / Elemental Spirits and Cosmic Powers
Rejected alternatives: jinnaaji (jinn) — FORBIDDEN, per baseline Holy Spirit prohibition extended to this whole conceptual space, a compressed two-term list (dynamic-equivalence oral-fluency shortcut found in some existing dialect editions) — rejected, weakens the totality/comprehensiveness claim central to the passage’s pastoral force
Original: θρόνοι, κυριότητες, ἀρχαί, ἐξουσίαι
Category: Christology
NEW — provisional, descriptive four-term cluster. Colossians 1:16, 2:15. Sits directly atop the live Fulani/Sahelian spirit-power belief-world (jinn, ancestral/territorial spirits, barke-mediating powers sought via marabouts). Must read as triumphant subordination to and defeat by Christ, never as confirmation that such powers are independently real forces requiring separate management. All four terms must be rendered distinctly, never compressed. Mandatory theologian review.
Fullness
Approved rendering: timmal
Transliteration: timmal
Doctrine: Fullness of Deity Dwelling in Christ Bodily
Rejected alternatives: any fragment/portion-implying paraphrase — rejected, since Christ must never be presented as one recipient among others of divine power
Original: πλήρωμα
Category: Christology
NEW — provisional. Colossians 1:19, 2:9. Load-bearing term for the entire Colossians Christology; must never suggest Christ possesses only a fragment of God’s fullness. Must be handled IDENTICALLY at both occurrences (1:19 and 2:9). Mandatory theologian pre-confirmation.
Deity Godhood
Approved rendering: Alanaagal
Transliteration: Alanaagal
Doctrine: Fullness of Deity Dwelling in Christ Bodily
Rejected alternatives: theotēs transliterated directly from an Arabic-Islamic theological loanword — rejected to avoid importing denial-laden Islamic content wholesale
Original: θεότης
Category: Christology
NEW — provisional. Colossians 2:9. Builds on the root already used in the baseline doctrine registry for deity_of_christ (Alanaagal Almasiihu); names the abstract divine essence distinctly from Alla (God himself) and from Ɓiɗɗo Alla (the person of the Son). The most maximal statement of Christ’s full deity in the New Testament; directly contested by Tawhid doctrine. Mandatory theologian pre-confirmation.
Dwell Permanently
Approved rendering: ñiiɓde
Transliteration: ñiiɓde
Doctrine: Fullness of Deity Dwelling in Christ Bodily
Rejected alternatives: a ‘visited/appeared/rested upon’ paraphrase pattern (found in some existing dialect renderings of John 1:14) — EXPLICITLY REJECTED, as it would collapse permanent Incarnation into an Islamic-prophetology-compatible temporary-inspiration model
Original: κατοικέω
Category: Christology
NEW — provisional. Colossians 1:19, 2:9. The permanence conveyed is the crucial nuance distinguishing orthodox Incarnation from prophetic-inspiration or adoptionist models. Must be made explicit in teaching notes, not left to the verb alone.
Before All Things
Approved rendering: ado kala huunde
Transliteration: ado kala huunde
Doctrine: Supremacy of Christ over Creation
Original: πρὸ πάντων
Category: Christology
NEW. Colossians 1:17. Decisive safeguard against the created-being misreading of ‘firstborn’ (1:15); directly asserts eternal preexistence. Must never be softened or omitted, and must co-occur with ‘firstborn’ in every teaching unit.
Reconciliation
Approved rendering: artirgol e Alla
Transliteration: artirgol e Alla
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Rejected alternatives: yaafuyee bakkaatuuji (forgiveness of sins) — rejected as an unconsciously flattening synonym that loses the restored-relationship/removed-hostility dimension, any borrowed Arabic-Islamic soteriological loanword — none exists, since Islamic soteriology has no atonement/mediated-reconciliation category at all
Original: ἀποκαταλλάξαι
Category: Salvation
NEW — provisional, HIGHEST PRIORITY NEW COINAGE IN THIS ENTIRE CURRICULUM. Colossians 1:20-22. Zero existing Fulfulde theological precedent. Islamic soteriology has no atonement framework; forgiveness is understood as Allah’s direct mercy weighed against deeds, not a restored relationship purchased by a mediator’s blood. Must be taught with full explanatory unpacking every occurrence, never treated as a word that carries its own meaning. Mandatory theologian pre-confirmation before Phase 2 deployment.
Blood Of The Cross
Approved rendering: ɓiiɓi kuruusi
Transliteration: ɓiiɓi kuruusi
Doctrine: Historicity of the Crucifixion / Reconciliation through the Cross
Rejected alternatives: an unfamiliar/neutral-sounding dialect term for ‘cross’ not yet checked against that dialect’s existing Christian usage — rejected pending confirmation
Original: αἷμα τοῦ σταυροῦ αὐτοῦ
Category: Christology
NEW — provisional. Colossians 1:20, and the related ‘nailed to the cross’ at 2:14. Compounds two of the highest-stakes risks in this pipeline: mainstream Sunni interpretation of Quran 4:157 denies the crucifixion occurred at all, and ‘cross’ vocabulary (kuruusi) carries additional polemical freight in regional Islamic discourse (‘the religion of the cross’ used pejoratively). The exact Fulfulde term for ‘cross’ must be confirmed by a native-speaking theologian against the target dialect before deployment; the historical fact of crucifixion must be stated plainly, never presented as merely apparent.
Elemental Spirits
Approved rendering: korɗe aduna
Transliteration: korɗe aduna
Doctrine: Christ’s Supremacy over Elemental Spirits and Cosmic Powers
Rejected alternatives: any Arabic-Islamic spirit-power loanword (e.g. jinn-adjacent vocabulary) — rejected, would confirm rather than subordinate these powers
Original: στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου
Category: False Teaching
NEW — provisional. Colossians 2:8, 2:20. Single most direct thematic parallel in the whole book to living Fulani/Sahelian syncretistic practice — precisely the dynamic behind barke (marabout-mediated blessing) and gris-gris/amulet practice, already flagged Critical in the baseline for Grace and Power of God. Must be taught as directly, pastorally relevant to a real contemporary situation, not ancient history. Mandatory theologian review.
Disarmed And Triumph
Approved rendering: foolii (+ ardiiɓe/kattanɗe)
Transliteration: foolii
Doctrine: Christ’s Public Victory over Hostile Powers
Rejected alternatives: ‘defeated’ or ‘drove away’ (weaker paraphrase) — rejected in favor of the fuller stripping/exposing sense of apekdysamenos, any rendering compatible with an ongoing negotiation-with-powers framework — rejected, presenting this as a repeatable ritual spiritual-warfare technique (binding/loosing formulas) — explicitly FORBIDDEN, see 05_translation_landscape.md §4
Original: ἀπεκδυσάμενος… θριαμβεύσας
Category: Christology
NEW — provisional. Colossians 2:14-15, the climactic victory statement of the letter. The single most pastorally powerful verse for a Fulfulde-speaking audience navigating spirit-power fear (barke, jinn, amulets): Christ has ALREADY, PUBLICLY, DECISIVELY defeated every cosmic power, anchored to the historical cross event (paired with 1:20’s blood of the cross). Must retain full triumphant force. Mandatory theologian review.
Worship Of Angels
Approved rendering: malaykaaji + diine
Transliteration: malaykaaji
Doctrine: Warning against Worship of Angels and Intermediary Devotion
Original: θρησκεία τῶν ἀγγέλων
Category: False Teaching
NEW. Colossians 2:18. malaykaaji is shared, prestige-bearing Islamic angelology vocabulary (Jibril, recording angels, angel of death); must warn against displacing Christ’s unique sufficiency with ANY intermediary devotion — including, by contemporary application, marabout/saint veneration — without caricaturing ordinary Islamic angelology as such. Mandatory theologian review.
Idolatry
Approved rendering: sirku
Transliteration: sirku
Doctrine: Idolatry, Including Covetousness as Idolatry
Rejected alternatives: a softer native paraphrase avoiding the shirk association entirely — rejected, since it would lose the real force the term carries for Islamically-formed readers
Original: εἰδωλολατρία
Category: Ethics
NEW. Colossians 3:5. sirku is shared directly and precisely with the gravest Islamic theological category, shirk. Double-edged: gives Paul’s warning real weight for Islamically-formed readers, but risks readers redirecting the same accusation at Christian Trinitarian/deity-of-Christ doctrine itself (routinely characterized as shirk in Islamic polemic). Requires the most careful two-directional theological framing in the whole curriculum — teaching materials must proactively address ‘then isn’t calling Jesus God itself shirk?’ rather than leaving the tension unaddressed. Mandatory theologian review.
Unity In Christ No Distinction
Approved rendering: leƴƴi goo (+ list)
Transliteration: leƴƴi goo
Doctrine: Unity in Christ: No Distinction of Ethnicity or Status
Original: Ἕλλην καὶ Ἰουδαῖος, περιτομὴ καὶ ἀκροβυστία, βάρβαρος, Σκύθης, δοῦλος, ἐλεύθερος
Category: Church
NEW/REUSE-hybrid. Colossians 3:11. Engages both real inter-ethnic tension across the Sahel AND the historically rooted, in places still socially live rimɓe/maccuɓe caste distinction within Fulani society itself, which this very verse explicitly abolishes ‘in Christ.’ Must be taught with full pastoral seriousness, not glossed over as ancient history. Mandatory theologian review.
Slaves Bondservants
Approved rendering: maccuɓe
Transliteration: maccuɓe
Doctrine: Slaves, Masters, and the Gospel’s Equalizing Effect
Rejected alternatives: a euphemistic substitute avoiding the actual social-caste term — rejected, since the required cross-referencing to 3:11 and 4:9 needs the real term to carry its full pastoral weight
Original: δοῦλοι
Category: Household Code
NEW — CRITICAL, NEW RISK AXIS UNIQUE TO THIS CURRICULUM, ABSENT FROM THE ROMANS BASELINE ENTIRELY. Colossians 3:22-25. maccuɓe names a real, historically rooted, and in some Fulani communities still socially operative caste distinction (the rimɓe/maccuɓe structure) — not a safely distant ancient category for this audience. Must NEVER be used, even inadvertently, to reinforce present-day caste stigma. MUST be paired explicitly with 3:11’s ‘no distinction… slave, free’ and 4:9’s description of Onesimus as ‘a faithful and beloved brother.’ Mandatory theologian AND native-speaker review with explicit pastoral framing notes required before any deployment.
Masters Human
Approved rendering: jom-galle / giimaajo
Transliteration: jom-galle
Doctrine: Slaves, Masters, and the Gospel’s Equalizing Effect
Rejected alternatives: Joom — ABSOLUTELY FORBIDDEN for this human referent; Joom is reserved exclusively for Christ’s/God’s divine, exclusive Lordship per the baseline and the ‘lord’ entry above
Original: κύριοι (human referent)
Category: Household Code
NEW — CRITICAL. Colossians 4:1. The Greek kyrios is used for BOTH the human slave-owner and, in the same breath, ‘your Master in heaven’ — a real translation-consistency hazard with no precedent in the Romans baseline. Every occurrence in Colossians 3:18-4:1 must be checked individually and manually; no automatic default is safe.
Light Darkness
Approved rendering: annoora / niɓe
Transliteration: annoora / niɓe
Doctrine: Kingdom Mission / Christology
Rejected alternatives: a wholly separate native root avoiding the Arabic nūr association — considered but no equally natural attested alternative found; annoora retained with mandatory explicit fencing instead
Original: φῶς / σκότος
Category: Kingdom
NEW. Colossians 1:12-13. annoora (‘light,’ from Arabic nūr) shares its root with the Sufi devotional concept of Nūr Muhammad, the pre-existent ‘Light of Muhammad’ central to much West African Sufi theology (Tijaniyya/Qadiriyya devotional literature). Using this term near Christ risks readers mapping Christ’s ‘kingdom of light’ onto Nūr Muhammad theology; must be explicitly distinguished — shared vocabulary, not shared content.
Mystery
Approved rendering: gundo Alla feeñi
Transliteration: gundo Alla feeñi
Doctrine: The Mystery of Christ Now Fully Revealed
Rejected alternatives: sirru — ABSOLUTELY FORBIDDEN; the Arabic-loan term for esoteric/secret spiritual knowledge central to Sufi tariqa devotional tradition, transmitted progressively to initiates through a marabout, is the structural OPPOSITE of Paul’s fully-revealed-to-all mystērion
Original: μυστήριον
Category: Revelation
NEW. Colossians 1:26-27, 2:2, 4:3. Must retain the ‘now revealed’ component explicitly at every occurrence — Paul’s mystery is a truth once hidden, now made fully known and open to every believer, not an ongoing elite secret. Never use sirru, even informally or in oral catechesis.
High Risk Terms
Gospel
Approved rendering: Linjiila
Transliteration: Linjiila
Doctrine: Gospel
Rejected alternatives: kabaaru moƴƴo (acceptable as an explanatory gloss, ‘good news’)
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Salvation
Linjiila (from Arabic al-Injil via existing regional Bible translation work) is the term used in the existing Fulfulde/Pular New Testament translations, but recognition varies by dialect region and by whether a reader’s exposure has been Islamic (where al-Injil is understood as a scripture given to Isa and later corrupted, per the tahrif doctrine) or Christian. This tension must be addressed explicitly, and the term’s currency should be reconfirmed against the specific dialect translation in local use before this curriculum is deployed. In Colossians 1:5-6, 1:23, the gospel’s universal, already-bearing-fruit-worldwide scope must be preserved. [INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE — unchanged for Colossians deployment]
Faith
Approved rendering: gomɗinal
Transliteration: gomɗinal
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: hoolaare (trust, acceptable as a supporting synonym)
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
gomɗinal (from gomɗin-, ‘to believe’) is the general term for belief/faith; the object of faith must always be made explicit, not left to default into confessional religious identity. Colossians 1:4, 1:23, 2:5, 2:7, 2:12 repeatedly ground stability and union with Christ specifically in this trust. [INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE — unchanged for Colossians deployment]
Apostle
Approved rendering: nulaaɗo
Transliteration: nulaaɗo
Doctrine: Apostleship
Rejected alternatives: rasuulu (never use; the Arabic-derived title reserved in Islamic usage for Muhammad as ‘the Messenger’)
Original: ἀπόστολος
Category: Church
Deliberately native-rooted to avoid rasuulu. Colossians 1:1. [INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE — unchanged for Colossians deployment]
Saints
Approved rendering: seniiɓe
Transliteration: seniiɓe
Doctrine: Sainthood
Original: ἅγιοι
Category: Church
Plural, corporate form. Colossians 1:2, 1:4, 1:12, 1:26; must read corporately, addressing every believer at Colossae, not a special ascetic class. [INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE — unchanged for Colossians deployment]
Sanctification
Approved rendering: ceniinde
Transliteration: ceniinde
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: laaɓal (ritual/ceremonial purification, avoid as a substitute)
Original: ἁγιασμός
Category: Sanctification
Underlies Colossians 1:22 and the whole chapter 3 renewal material. Must be kept distinct from laaɓal (Islamic ablution). [INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE — unchanged for Colossians deployment]
Sin
Approved rendering: bakkaatu
Transliteration: bakkaatu
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Rejected alternatives: fenaande (mistake/lie, too weak)
Original: ἁμαρτία
Category: Sin
Colossians 1:14, 2:13, and the chapter 3 vice lists. Underlies the forgiveness and dead-in-trespasses material; must not be read as ritual impurity alone. [INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE — unchanged for Colossians deployment]
Power Of God
Approved rendering: doole Alla
Transliteration: doole Alla
Doctrine: Power of God for Salvation
Rejected alternatives: barke (marabout-associated spiritual power/blessing, never use)
Original: δύναμις θεοῦ
Category: God
Colossians 1:11, 1:29, 2:12. Keep categorically distinct from barke. [INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE — unchanged for Colossians deployment]
Election
Approved rendering: suɓagol
Transliteration: suɓagol
Doctrine: Effectual Calling
Rejected alternatives: natal (fate/lot, use with caution)
Original: ἐκλεκτός
Category: Salvation
Conceptual background to Colossians 3:12 (‘God’s chosen ones’). Must not collapse into natal (impersonal fate/al-qadar). [INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE — unchanged for Colossians deployment]
Providence
Approved rendering: welsindiigal Alla
Transliteration: welsindiigal Alla
Doctrine: Providence
Rejected alternatives: natal (fate/al-qadar, use with caution), hasara (misfortune/chance, never use)
Original: συνέστηκεν (cf. Colossians 1:17)
Category: God
Colossians 1:17 (‘in him all things hold together’) directly extends this doctrine to Christ himself as sustaining agent — see also the new term hold_together (dentinaa). [INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE — unchanged for Colossians deployment]
God
Approved rendering: Alla
Transliteration: Alla
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Original: θεός
Category: God
Must consistently be presented in explicitly Trinitarian, Christ-centered terms, especially given Colossians 1:19/2:9’s fullness-of-Deity claims about Christ specifically. [INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE — unchanged for Colossians deployment]
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: Ruuhu Ceniiɗo
Transliteration: Ruuhu Ceniiɗo
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: ruuhu (never use alone), jinna (never use; a jinn/spirit being in Islamic and West African folk belief)
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: God
Must always be used in full. Colossians 1:8-9. The jinna prohibition extends conceptually to the whole cosmic-power cluster introduced by Colossians 1:16/2:15 (see new term cosmic_powers). [INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE — unchanged for Colossians deployment]
Creation Ktisis
Approved rendering: tagu
Transliteration: tagu
Doctrine: Supremacy of Christ over Creation
Original: κτίσις
Category: Christology
NEW — provisional. Colossians 1:15-16. Underlies the Creator/creature distinction central to Deity of Christ; the word itself is low-risk but its deployment here is Critical-adjacent — Christ must always be grammatical AGENT of tagu-verbs, never a grammatical object/member of the created set.
Head Of The Church
Approved rendering: hoore
Transliteration: hoore
Doctrine: Christ as Head of the Church
Rejected alternatives: Laamiiɗo (ruler) — rejected per baseline’s Sokoto Caliphate political-resonance caution
Original: κεφαλή
Category: Ecclesiology
NEW — provisional. Colossians 1:18, 2:19. Risk of conflation with political/clan headship categories; must convey personal, organic, life-giving spiritual headship, never institutional-political rule. Never pair with laamu vocabulary in the same clause.
Preeminent
Approved rendering: adiiɗo e fof
Transliteration: adiiɗo e fof
Doctrine: Preeminence of Christ in Everything
Rejected alternatives: an ‘important/great’ comparative-only softening — forbidden
Original: πρωτεύων
Category: Christology
NEW. Colossians 1:18, the rhetorical climax of the Christ-hymn. Must retain the absolute, unqualified, all-encompassing force of ‘in everything’; any softening undercuts the doctrinal purpose of the entire passage.
Hold Together
Approved rendering: dentinaa
Transliteration: dentinaa
Doctrine: Christ as Creator and Sustainer of All Things
Rejected alternatives: an impersonal ‘laws of nature hold the universe together’ paraphrase — rejected
Original: συνέστηκεν
Category: Christology
NEW. Colossians 1:17. Must be personal, ongoing divine sustaining activity performed by Christ specifically, reinforcing his deity, per the baseline’s providence doctrine extended here.
Human Tradition
Approved rendering: aada yimɓe
Transliteration: aada yimɓe
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Human Philosophy
Original: παράδοσις τῶν ἀνθρώπων
Category: False Teaching
NEW. Colossians 2:8. The Christ-vs-‘human tradition’ contrast sits close to the prestige of Islamic legal-scholarly tradition (fiqh/Sharia); must not read as a blanket polemic against all religious tradition or law.
Circumcision
Approved rendering: kuɓɓal
Transliteration: kuɓɓal
Doctrine: Circumcision and Baptism as Union with Christ
Original: περιτομή
Category: Covenant
NEW. Colossians 2:11. Literal practice is near-universal and uncontroversial among Fulani communities; the figurative ‘circumcision of Christ’ (heart-transformation via union with Christ’s death, needing no physical rite) must be clearly and explicitly distinguished from the routine physical practice.
Baptism
Approved rendering: batisim
Transliteration: batisim
Doctrine: Circumcision and Baptism as Union with Christ
Rejected alternatives: a native paraphrase built on ordinary washing vocabulary — rejected, risks reading as generic ritual washing indistinguishable from wuduu/ghusl
Original: βάπτισμα
Category: Sacrament
NEW — provisional transliterated loanword. Colossians 2:12. Must be explicitly distinguished from Islamic ritual ablution (wuduu, ghusl), which is repeated and external, unlike this once-for-all identification with Christ’s death and resurrection.
Record Of Debt
Approved rendering: winndaandi ɓaggeeli
Transliteration: winndaandi ɓaggeeli
Doctrine: Christ’s Public Victory over Hostile Powers
Rejected alternatives: under-translation/omission simplifying to bare ‘our sins’ (a pattern observed in some existing dialect editions) — rejected, loses real atonement/legal-liability content
Original: χειρόγραφον
Category: Salvation
NEW — provisional. Colossians 2:14. Legal-financial metaphor with no ready Fulfulde equivalent; must be taught explicitly as Christ personally absorbing and cancelling a real legal liability, not merely a general statement of divine leniency.
False Humility Asceticism
Approved rendering: surtaare / hoyeende
Transliteration: surtaare / hoyeende
Doctrine: Asceticism and Self-Made Religion
Original: ταπεινοφροσύνη (ironic use)
Category: False Teaching
NEW, context-sensitive. Same conceptual field used PEJORATIVELY at 2:18/2:23 (ascetic performance displacing Christ) and APPROVINGLY at 3:12 (genuine Christian virtue, resonant with Pulaaku’s semteende/modesty). Mandatory sense-marking at each occurrence, following the baseline’s precedent for context-sensitive terms like ‘called.‘
Self Made Religion
Approved rendering: diine mo neɗɗo suɓii hoore-makko
Transliteration: diine mo neɗɗo suɓii hoore-makko
Doctrine: Asceticism and Self-Made Religion
Rejected alternatives: a compact single-word neologism — deliberately rejected in favor of a verbose descriptive compound to avoid inventing a misleadingly technical-sounding term
Original: ἐθελοθρησκία
Category: False Teaching
NEW. Colossians 2:23. Has real surface similarity to some regional ascetic/Sufi devotional practices; must target the specific Colossian error of self-devised regulations displacing Christ’s sufficiency, not a blanket critique of disciplined religious practice as such.
Raised With Christ
Approved rendering: immoraa wondude e Kiristu
Transliteration: immoraa wondude e Kiristu
Doctrine: Union with Christ: Died and Raised With Him
Original: συνηγέρθητε
Category: Union with Christ
NEW, built on REUSE immorde e maayde. Colossians 2:12, 3:1. Must be taught so as not to be confused with, or seen as replacing, the separate historical, bodily resurrection of Christ (itself Critical and non-negotiable per the baseline) or the future bodily resurrection of believers.
Put Off Old Self
Approved rendering: yaltinde neɗɗo on ɓooyɗo
Transliteration: yaltinde neɗɗo on ɓooyɗo
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Original: ἀπεκδυσάμενοι τὸν παλαιὸν ἄνθρωπον
Category: Union with Christ
NEW. Colossians 3:9. Must be distinguished from Islamic tawba (behavioral moral reform within a continuous self) — this is a radical identity replacement, not incremental reform.
Put On New Self
Approved rendering: naatnude neɗɗo kesun
Transliteration: naatnude neɗɗo kesun
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Original: ἐνδυσάμενοι τὸν νέον ἄνθρωπον
Category: Union with Christ
NEW. Colossians 3:10. Same doctrinal weight as put_off_old_self; the clothing metaphor (removing/putting on garments) should render naturally into Fulfulde imagery.
Renewed In Knowledge
Approved rendering: anndal timmuɗo (+ mbaadi)
Transliteration: anndal timmuɗo
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Original: ἀνακαινούμενον εἰς ἐπίγνωσιν κατ᾽ εἰκόνα τοῦ κτίσαντος
Category: Sanctification
NEW, combines mbaadi (image) with epignōsis vocabulary. Colossians 3:10. Deliberately ties chapter 3’s ethical renewal back to chapter 1’s ‘image’ Christology (1:15); teaching materials must preserve this structural link. Must also be distinguished from Sufi ma’rifa (esoteric, initiatory mystical knowledge).
Inheritance
Approved rendering: roŋgal
Transliteration: roŋgal
Doctrine: Slaves, Masters, and the Gospel’s Equalizing Effect / Salvation
Original: κληρονομία / ἀνταπόδοσις τῆς κληρονομίας
Category: Salvation
NEW. Colossians 1:12, 3:24. Genuine cultural resonance with Fulani lineage/cattle-inheritance custom; theologically powerful reversal directly relevant to maccuɓe-sensitivity — inheritance-status in Christ is not determined by earthly caste or lineage. Must be taught as spiritual, non-forfeitable inheritance, not clan property inheritance.
Hope
Approved rendering: jortaari
Transliteration: jortaari
Doctrine: Christian Hope Grounded in the Gospel
Original: ἐλπίς
Category: Faith
NEW. Colossians 1:5, 1:23, 1:27 (‘Christ in you, the hope of glory’). Must be distinguished from Islamic tawakkul (resignation to Allah’s will) or mere wishful expectation; must be explicitly grounded in Christ’s finished work and future glory.
Wisdom
Approved rendering: hakkille
Transliteration: hakkille
Doctrine: Spiritual Wisdom and Full Knowledge of God’s Will
Original: σοφία
Category: Faith
NEW. Colossians 1:9, 1:28, 2:3, 3:16, 4:5. Genuine cultural bridge — hakkille is also a core Pulaaku value — but must be explicitly framed as Spirit-given, revealed wisdom in Christ, not innate pastoralist shrewdness alone.
Endurance
Approved rendering: munyal
Transliteration: munyal
Doctrine: New Self Virtues and the Bond of Love / Christian Character
Original: ὑπομονή
Category: Ethics
NEW. Colossians 1:11. Strong Pulaaku bridge (munyal is a core Pulaaku value); the curriculum must show that Christian endurance is grounded in hope in Christ’s finished work, not mere cultural stoicism or fatalistic resignation.
Full Knowledge
Approved rendering: anndal timmuɗo
Transliteration: anndal timmuɗo
Doctrine: Spiritual Wisdom and Full Knowledge of God’s Will
Original: ἐπίγνωσις
Category: Faith
NEW. Colossians 1:9-10, 2:2, 3:10. Must be distinguished from Sufi ma’rifa, an esoteric, experiential mystical knowledge of God attained through a spiritual path/order under a spiritual guide — Paul’s epignōsis is revealed truth open to all believers, not initiatory or elite.
Redemption
Approved rendering: soodgol
Transliteration: soodgol
Doctrine: Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins
Original: ἀπολύτρωσις
Category: Salvation
NEW. Colossians 1:14. Genuine cultural bridge to Fulani bride-price/cattle-purchase custom of ‘buying back’; risks being read as a mere commercial transaction unless explicitly taught with its relational, atoning depth (compounds with reconciliation, Critical).
Forgiveness Of Sins
Approved rendering: yaafuyee bakkaatuuji
Transliteration: yaafuyee bakkaatuuji
Doctrine: Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins
Original: ἄφεσις τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν
Category: Salvation
NEW, built on REUSE bakkaatu. Colossians 1:14, 2:13. Must be distinguished from the Islamic deeds-weighing model of Allah’s conditional mercy. Must not be confused with, or substitute for, reconciliation (artirgol e Alla), which names the restored-relationship dimension forgiveness alone does not capture.
Filling Up Afflictions
Approved rendering: (descriptive phrase; no single fixed term — render per-instance with theologian guidance)
Transliteration: n/a
Doctrine: Sufficiency of Christ’s Atonement Amid Paul’s Ministry Sufferings
Rejected alternatives: any phrase implying Christ’s atoning death was incomplete or insufficient — ABSOLUTELY FORBIDDEN
Original: ἀνταναπληρῶ τὰ ὑστερήματα τῶν θλίψεων τοῦ Χριστοῦ
Category: Ministry
NEW, no fixed term. Colossians 1:24. Must never suggest Christ’s atoning death — already established as uniquely sufficient per Colossians’ own central Sufficiency-of-Christ theme — needs supplementing. A mistranslation here would directly contradict the curriculum’s own core doctrine. Mandatory theologian review of every occurrence.
Fellow Servant
Approved rendering: maccuɗo
Transliteration: maccuɗo
Doctrine: Ministry Partnership / intersects Slavery-Caste sensitivity
Original: σύνδουλος
Category: Ministry
NEW. Colossians 1:7, 4:7, 4:12. Shares its root with maccuɓe, flagged Critical above for caste sensitivity. This dual usage (honorific NT self-designation for Paul, Timothy, and other ministry co-workers vs. the caste-sensitive household-code category) must be addressed explicitly in teaching materials; the term’s honorific NT usage must never dilute the caste-sensitivity flag, nor should it be avoided altogether at the cost of losing a genuinely important NT self-designation. Theologian input required for consistent, pastorally careful rendering across the book.
Medium Risk Terms
Called
Approved rendering: noddaaɗo
Transliteration: noddaaɗo
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Rejected alternatives: torraaɗo (invited, too weak)
Original: κλητός
Category: Salvation
Context-sensitive across multiple senses. Colossians 3:15 (‘called in one body’). torraaɗo must not be used. [INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE — unchanged for Colossians deployment]
Calling
Approved rendering: noddaandi
Transliteration: noddaandi
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Original: κλῆσις
Category: Salvation
Noun form for the act/state of being called; supports Colossians 3:15. [INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE — unchanged for Colossians deployment]
Holy
Approved rendering: ceniiɗo
Transliteration: ceniiɗo
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: laaɓɗo (physically clean, reserve for ritual/physical cleanliness only)
Original: ἅγιος
Category: Sanctification
Colossians 1:22, 3:12. laaɓɗo (relevant to Islamic ablution, wuduu) must be kept distinct from moral holiness. [INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE — unchanged for Colossians deployment]
Adoption
Approved rendering: jaɓugol wonande ɓiɗɗo
Transliteration: jaɓugol wonande ɓiɗɗo
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Original: υἱοθεσία
Category: Salvation
Descriptive compound since formal legal adoption is unfamiliar in traditional Fulani kinship structures. Conceptual background to Colossians 1:12-14’s inheritance language, reinforced by 3:24’s inheritance-as-reward for slave believers. [INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE — unchanged for Colossians deployment]
Peace
Approved rendering: jam
Transliteration: jam
Doctrine: Peace with God
Rejected alternatives: deeƴre (calm/stillness, too passive/psychological)
Original: εἰρήνη
Category: Salvation
jam is deeply established in Fulfulde/Sahelian daily greeting-register, central to teddungal within Pulaaku. Colossians 1:2, 1:20 (‘making peace by the blood of his cross’), 3:15 (‘let the peace of Christ rule/arbitrate’) must be distinguished from this everyday greeting sense. [INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE — unchanged for Colossians deployment]
Spiritual Gifts
Approved rendering: dokkal Ruuhu
Transliteration: dokkal Ruuhu
Doctrine: Spiritual Gifts
Rejected alternatives: barke (Sufi-associated blessing/spiritual power, avoid as a substitute)

Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Original: εἰρηνοποιήσας

Approved rendering: ɗoftaade
Transliteration: ɗoftaade
Doctrine: Household Codes
Original: τέκνα, ὑπακούετε τοῖς γονεῦσιν

Deceit
Approved rendering: fenaande
Transliteration: fenaande
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Human Philosophy
NEW. Colossians 2:4, 2:8. Note: the baseline rejected fenaande specifically as TOO WEAK for ‘sin’ — but it IS the correct term for ‘deceit/lie’ itself in this distinct usage; do not confuse the two contexts.
