1 John — Biblical Theme Map
PRD Phase 1, Step 3 (companion to 09_cross_reference_analysis.md)
Curriculum: 1 John
Core passage: 1 John 4:7–21
Destination language: Sanskrit (Devanagari)
Governing authority: Extends, and never contradicts, the baseline Romans Language Package. All Sanskrit terms cited below are as fixed in translation_memory.json, bible_term_registry.json, and this curriculum’s 07_semantic_analysis.md / 08_core_glossary.md.
1. The Letter’s Stated Purpose and Structural Character
1 John states its own purpose twice, framing the whole letter:
- 1:3–4 — “…that you too may have fellowship with us… so that our joy may be complete.” (सहभागिता [REUSED — Romans TM])
- 5:13 — “…that you may know that you have eternal life… and that you may continue to believe.” (जानीयात्… अनन्तं जीवनम्… विश्वसेत)
Between these two purpose-statements, the letter does not argue linearly (as Romans does, building a sustained forensic case) but moves in a spiral of recurring tests, returning three times to the same three diagnostic questions, each time with greater intensity and closer approach to the climax of 4:7–21:
| Test | Diagnostic question | First cycle | Second cycle | Third cycle |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Moral test | Does the person practice righteousness / walk in light? | 1:5–2:6 | 2:29–3:10 | 5:18 |
| Social test | Does the person love the brethren? | 2:7–11 | 3:11–18 | 4:7–21 |
| Doctrinal test | Does the person confess Jesus Christ come in the flesh? | 2:18–27 | 4:1–6 | 5:1,5–12,20 |
The core passage (4:7–21) sits at the convergence point where all three tests fuse: love for the brethren (social) is grounded in God’s own nature (moral/ontological: “God is love”) and inseparable from right confession of the Son sent into the world (doctrinal: 4:2–3,9–10,14–15). This structural observation matters for Sanskrit rendering because it means the curriculum’s eight named doctrines are not eight independent topics but three interlocking strands that repeatedly braid together, and translator notes should reflect that interweaving rather than treating each doctrine as a self-contained unit confined to one passage.
2. Theme-by-Theme Canonical Trajectory
Each of the eight curriculum doctrines is mapped below along its full canonical arc — OT root, Gospel fulfillment, Pauline (especially Romans) parallel, and eschatological consummation — with the fixed Sanskrit terms governing it at each canonical station.
2.1 God is Light and God is Love
| Canonical station | Text | Content |
|---|---|---|
| Creation | Genesis 1:3–4 | Light spoken into being, separated from darkness — the physical pattern later used as moral metaphor |
| Covenant self-revelation | Exodus 34:6–7 | The LORD proclaims his own character: “merciful and gracious… abounding in steadfast love (ḥesed)“ |
| Wisdom/Psalms | Psalm 27:1; 36:9 | ”The LORD is my light”; “in your light do we see light” |
| Prophetic | Isaiah 60:19–20 | The LORD as everlasting light replacing sun and moon — eschatological anticipation |
| Incarnation | John 1:4–9; 8:12 | ”The light shines in the darkness”; “I am the light of the world” |
| 1 John | 1:5; 4:8,16 | God is light (ontological); God is love (ontological) — the letter’s two parallel copula-predications, both requiring the identical construction (सर्वेश्वरः ज्योतिः अस्ति / सर्वेश्वरः प्रेमास्ति) so their structural parallelism survives translation |
| Pauline parallel | Romans 5:8; 13:12–13 | Love demonstrated at the cross; walking as “children of light” |
| Consummation | Revelation 21:23–25; 22:5 | The New Jerusalem needs no sun, “for the glory of God gives it light… and there will be no night there” |
Sanskrit governing terms: ज्योतिः (jyotiḥ, Critical — Gītā 13:17 contrast mandatory), प्रेम (prema, Critical — Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava prema-bhakti-rasa contrast mandatory), अन्धकारः (andhakāraḥ, High — guṇa-theory contrast).
Theological throughline for Sanskrit readers: the OT and NT canon consistently present light and love as attributes flowing from a single personal, self-revealing God whose character does not change from Sinai to the New Jerusalem — the opposite trajectory from Advaita’s progressive dissolution of personal attributes into the attributeless (nirguṇa) Absolute. This is worth stating explicitly in Phase 2 teaching notes as the positive canonical case behind the two mandatory contrast-notes already required for ज्योतिः and प्रेम.
2.2 Fellowship with God and One Another
| Canonical station | Text | Content |
|---|---|---|
| Eden | Genesis 3:8 | God walking in the garden with humanity — fellowship as the created design, broken by sin |
| Tabernacle/Temple | Exodus 25:8; 1 Kings 8:10–13 | God’s dwelling (מִשְׁכָּן/מִקְדָּשׁ) among his covenant people |
| Incarnation | John 1:14 | ”The Word became flesh and dwelt (ἐσκήνωσεν, ‘tabernacled’) among us” |
| 1 John | 1:3–7; 3:24; 4:12–16 | Fellowship with the Father and Son, and with one another, mediated by walking in light and mutual love; μένω/निवसति, the letter’s dominant image of mutual indwelling |
| Pauline parallel | Romans 5:1–2; 8:9–11 | Peace with God through justification; the Spirit dwelling in believers |
| Consummation | Revelation 21:3 | ”Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man… God himself will be with them” |
Sanskrit governing terms: सहभागिता [REUSED], निवसति/निवासः (High — sthitaprajña contrast mandatory).
2.3 Confession and Forgiveness of Sin
| Canonical station | Text | Content |
|---|---|---|
| Fall | Genesis 3:9–13 | The pattern of hiding vs. confessing before God begins immediately after the first sin |
| Levitical system | Leviticus 4–5; 16 | Sin offerings and the Day of Atonement — sin dealt with through prescribed, God-given sacrificial means |
| Prophetic call to confession | Psalm 32:5; 51:1–4 | ”I acknowledged my sin to you… and you forgave” |
| 1 John | 1:7–9; 2:1–2; 5:16–17 | Confession met with faithful, promised forgiveness on the basis of Christ’s blood and advocacy, not ritual merit |
| Pauline parallel | Romans 3:24–25; 4:7–8 (quoting Psalm 32:1–2) | Justification and the non-imputation of sin |
| Consummation | Revelation 21:27 | Nothing unclean shall enter the New Jerusalem — final, complete cleansing accomplished |
Sanskrit governing terms: पापम् [REUSED], स्वीकरणम्/स्वीकरोति (High), क्षमा (High), शोधनम् (High), रक्तम् (Medium/High), पापार्थं बलिदानम् (Critical).
2.4 Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth
| Canonical station | Text | Content |
|---|---|---|
| First fratricide | Genesis 4:1–16 | Cain’s hatred and murder of Abel — the negative type governing 1 John 3:11–12 |
| Levitical law | Leviticus 19:18 | ”Love your neighbor as yourself” |
| Prophetic critique | Amos 5:21–24; Micah 6:8 | Ritual without love/justice condemned |
| Incarnation/teaching | John 13:34–35 | ”A new commandment I give you, that you love one another… by this all will know you are my disciples” |
| 1 John | 2:9–11; 3:10–18; 4:7–21 | Love for the brother as the observable, non-negotiable evidence of being “born of God”; hatred as evidence of belonging to “the evil one,” typified by Cain |
| Pauline parallel | Romans 12:9–10; 13:8–10 (quoting Leviticus 19:18) | Genuine love, the fulfilling of the law |
| Consummation | Revelation 7:9–10 | The redeemed from every nation gathered in perfected unity before the throne |
Sanskrit governing terms: परमेश्वरात् जातः (Critical), भ्राता (Medium), द्वेषः (Medium/High), प्राणत्यागः (Medium), करुणा (Low/Medium).
2.5 The Incarnation and Antichrist
| Canonical station | Text | Content |
|---|---|---|
| First promise | Genesis 3:15 | The seed of the woman who will crush the serpent — the incarnational trajectory begins here |
| Davidic promise | 2 Samuel 7:12–16 | The eternal throne promised to David’s seed |
| Immanuel prophecy | Isaiah 7:14; 9:6 | ”God with us”; “a child is born… Mighty God, Everlasting Father” |
| Incarnation itself | John 1:1,14 | ”The Word was God… the Word became flesh” |
| 1 John | 1:1–3; 4:2–3,9–10,14–15; 5:5–6 | The Word of life “made manifest,” seen, heard, touched; confession that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh as the test distinguishing true from antichrist spirits; the “only Son” (μονογενής) sent into the world |
| Antichrist counter-trajectory | Daniel 7:25; 11:36–37 | The eschatological self-exalting counterfeit who denies precisely this claim |
| Pauline parallel | Romans 1:3–4; 8:3; 9:5 | Seed of David according to the flesh, declared Son of God; God sending his own Son “in the likeness of sinful flesh”; Christ as “God over all” |
| Consummation | Revelation 19:11–16 | The incarnate Word returning in final victory over every counterfeit power |
Sanskrit governing terms: देहधारणम् [REUSED, mandatory Gītā 4:7–8 note], एकजातः (Critical), वचनम् (Critical), अन्तिख्रीष्टः (High), अभिषेकः (Critical).
Special note: this is the doctrine with the single greatest concentration of Critical-risk, citably-collision-prone terms in the whole curriculum (देहधारणम्, एकजातः, वचनम्, अभिषेकः all converge here), because 1 John’s entire polemical occasion (against docetic/proto-gnostic denial of Christ’s real flesh) is itself an incarnation controversy — making this the doctrine most structurally comparable to the Romans baseline’s own most heavily flagged Christological material (Romans 1:3–4, 9:5).
2.6 Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life
| Canonical station | Text | Content |
|---|---|---|
| Covenant faithfulness | Deuteronomy 7:9; Numbers 23:19 | God’s unchanging faithfulness and truthfulness as ground of confidence |
| Wisdom | Psalm 23; Psalm 16:11 | Confident trust in God’s care and presence, “fullness of joy” |
| First clear eternal-life text | Daniel 12:2 | ”Many who sleep… shall awake, some to everlasting life” |
| Incarnation | John 3:16; 10:28 | ”Whoever believes… shall not perish but have eternal life”; “no one will snatch them out of my hand” |
| 1 John | 3:19–21; 4:17–18; 5:11–15,18–20 | Confidence before God grounded in his greatness over our hearts; perfected love casting out fear of judgment; the explicit statement of purpose (5:13) — “these things I have written… that you may know you have eternal life” |
| Pauline parallel | Romans 6:23; 8:1,28–39 | Eternal life as God’s free gift in Christ; nothing able to separate believers from God’s love |
| Consummation | Revelation 21:4; 22:3–5 | No more death, mourning, crying, or pain; eternal reign with God |
Sanskrit governing terms: अनन्तं जीवनम् (Critical — sets Language-Package-wide precedent, see 09_cross_reference_analysis.md Part C Rule 3), निर्भीकता (Medium), निर्णयदिनम् (High), भयम् (Medium), दण्डः (Medium), त्राता (Critical).
2.7 Overcoming the World
| Canonical station | Text | Content |
|---|---|---|
| Creation mandate | Genesis 1:28 | Dominion given, corrupted at the Fall |
| Deliverance pattern | Exodus 14–15 | The LORD’s victory over Egypt as paradigm of deliverance “not by might” |
| Prophetic | Zechariah 4:6 | ”Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit” |
| Incarnation | John 16:33 | ”Take heart; I have overcome the world” |
| 1 John | 2:15–17; 4:4; 5:4–5 | Believers, born of God, overcome the world-system through faith; “greater is he who is in you than he who is in the world” |
| Pauline parallel | Romans 8:37 | ”In all these things we are more than conquerors (ὑπερνικῶμεν) through him who loved us” — direct shared νικάω-root parallel |
| Consummation | Revelation 21:7 | ”The one who conquers will have this heritage” |
Sanskrit governing terms: जगत् (Critical — mandatory jagat mithyā contrast note), जयति/विजयः (Medium), विश्वासः [REUSED] (High).

|---|---|---|
| Torah test | Deuteronomy 13:1–5; 18:20–22 | Prophets tested by doctrinal fidelity and by fulfillment |
| Historical narrative | 1 Kings 22:5–28 | True prophet (Micaiah) vs. four hundred false prophets |
| Incarnation/teaching | Matthew 7:15–20 | ”You will recognize them by their fruits” |
| 1 John | 4:1–6 | The doctrinal test: does the spirit confess Jesus Christ come in the flesh? The spirit of truth vs. the spirit of error |
| Pauline parallel | Romans 16:17–18; (2 Thessalonians 2:1–12, same doctrinal family) | Watch out for those who cause divisions contrary to sound teaching |
| Consummation | Revelation 19:20; 20:10 | Final judgment of the beast and false prophet, the ultimate antichrist figures |

3. Cross-Theme Interlock Diagram (Descriptive)
Because 1 John’s structure is spiral rather than linear, the eight doctrines above should be visualized as three concentric strands rather than eight separate boxes:
┌─────────────────────────────────┐

│ 5:13, toward which all three strands │
│ converge) │
└─────────────────────────────────────────┘
Implication for Phase 2: a translator encountering, e.g., a Chapter 3 love-of-brethren passage should not treat it as doctrinally isolated from Chapter 4’s incarnation/antichrist material or Chapter 5’s assurance material — 1 John itself treats them as inseparable tests of the same underlying reality (new birth). Sanskrit translator notes should periodically cross-reference this interlock (e.g., a note at 3:23 — “believe in the name of his Son… and love one another” — explicitly naming both the doctrinal and social strands as a single combined commandment) rather than resetting doctrinal context at each chapter boundary.
4. Comparison with Romans’ Theme Structure
The Romans baseline follows a predominantly linear, forensic argument: sin (1:18–3:20) → justification by faith (3:21–5:21) → sanctification (6–8) → Israel and the nations (9–11) → ethical outworking (12–16). 1 John’s spiral, testimonial argument (repeating moral/social/doctrinal tests, building toward assurance) is a structurally different genre serving the same canonical doctrines from a different angle:
| Shared doctrine | Romans’ angle | 1 John’s angle |
|---|---|---|
| Righteousness | Forensic status declared by faith (justification) | Ethical fruit evidencing new birth (sanctification) |
| Sin | Universal guilt requiring justification (juridical) | Ongoing reality requiring confession and cleansing (pastoral/relational) |
| Sonship/children of God | Legal adoption, full inheritance rights | Organic new birth, family resemblance/likeness |
| Love | Fruit of the Spirit; fulfillment of the law | God’s own essential nature; the definitive test of new birth |
| Assurance | Grounded in God’s unbreakable predestining purpose (Romans 8:28–39) | Grounded in God’s own greater-than-our-heart character and the indwelling Spirit (1 John 3:19–20; 4:13) |
| Christ’s deity | Argued climactically once (Romans 9:5) | Asserted climactically once (1 John 5:20), and defended throughout against denial (antichrist polemic) |
This comparison should inform Phase 2 tone: 1 John’s material, even where it shares vocabulary with Romans, should read as pastoral-testimonial (“we have heard, we have seen, we testify,” 1:1–3) rather than forensic-argumentative, while never relaxing the doctrinal precision the shared Critical/High-risk terms require.
