Core Glossary
Core Glossary: Philippians (English/Greek → Sanskrit)
PRD Phase 1, Step 2 companion artifact to 07_semantic_analysis.md
This glossary records every load-bearing theological term surveyed across Philippians 1–4, distinguishing (A) terms already fixed by the baseline Romans Language Package for Sanskrit — reused here exactly, without modification — and (B) new terms required by Philippians’ specific doctrinal content. All new entries follow the baseline’s own risk-assessment method: named, citable classical-school sources for every Critical/High assignment, least-philosophically-encumbered term preferred, and mandatory redefinition notes where required.

Part B — New Terms Required for Philippians
| English term | Sanskrit | Transliteration | Doctrine Risk | Doctrine | Alternatives rejected | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| love (ἀγάπη) | प्रेम | prema | High | Unity and Humility in the Church / Kenosis | स्नेहः, प्रीतिः | प्रेम is the central technical term of Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava bhakti-rasa theology (the topmost stage of the sādhana-ladder in Rūpa Gosvāmī’s Bhaktirasāmṛtasindhu, climaxing in Kṛṣṇa-prema). Retained as primary rendering (best semantic fit; expected in existing Christian Sanskrit usage) but requires mandatory redefinition at first occurrence: covenantal, self-emptying divine love enacted historically in Christ, not the aesthetic-devotional rasa stages of Kṛṣṇa-bhakti. |
| joy (χαρά) | हर्षः | harṣaḥ | High | Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment | आनन्दः (rejected as primary) | आनन्द is Vedānta’s technical term for Brahman’s own bliss-nature (sat-cit-ānanda; Taittirīya Upaniṣad’s ānandamaya-kośa). हर्ष avoids this. Book’s dominant, repeated motif (1:4,18,25; 2:2,17-18,28-29; 3:1; 4:1,4,10) — consistency is Critical across all occurrences. |
| self-emptying / kenosis (ἐκένωσεν ἑαυτόν) | स्वयं रिक्तीकरणम् | svayaṃ riktīkaraṇam | Critical | Incarnation and Self-Emptying of Christ (Kenosis) | आत्मानं शून्यीकरणम् (rejected: शून्य = Buddhist śūnyatā), आत्मत्यागः (rejected: Gītā 18’s karma-tyāga renunciation-action category) | The single highest-stakes new term in this Language Package. Must always use स्वयम्, never आत्मानम्, as the reflexive, to avoid an Advaita-trained reading of “the Self [ātman] being emptied” — the doctrinal opposite of Advaita’s ever-full (pūrṇa) ātman. Mandatory theologian-reviewed note at every occurrence (2:7). |
| self-humbling (ἐταπείνωσεν ἑαυτόν) | स्वयं नम्रीकरणम् | svayaṃ namrīkaraṇam | High | Kenosis / Unity and Humility | तपस् (rejected: ascetic self-mortification for merit/power) | Christ’s voluntary self-lowering unto death, distinct from disciplined tapas practiced for spiritual attainment. |
| form of God (μορφὴ θεοῦ) | सर्वेश्वररूपम् | sarveśvara-rūpam | Critical | Kenosis / Deity of Christ | ईश्वररूपम् (rejected per baseline lord Advaita-subordination reasoning) | रूप itself carries risk of suggesting one of several divine “forms” (cf. Viṣṇu’s rūpas, Gītā 11’s viśvarūpa), echoing avatāra-multiplicity. Mandatory note citing the same Gītā 4.7-8 contrast required for देहधारणम्. |
| equality with God (ἴσα θεῷ) | सर्वेश्वरेण समत्वम् | sarveśvareṇa samatvam | Critical | Deity of Christ | — | समत्व is Advaita/Gītā 6:29 technical vocabulary for realized non-difference of ātman and Brahman (an epistemic attainment). Must be explicitly distinguished: Christ’s equality with God is eternal, unearned, ontological — never a generalizable yogic realization. |
| a thing to be grasped (ἁρπαγμός) | स्वार्थेन ग्रहणीयं पदम् | svārthena grahaṇīyaṃ padam | High | Kenosis | (no single-word coinage attempted; descriptive phrase) | Rare Greek term (near hapax); risk is primarily interpretive precision — preserve “possessed but not exploited,” not “not yet possessed.” |
| form of a servant (μορφὴν δούλου) | दासरूपम् | dāsa-rūpam | High | Kenosis / Humanity of Christ | — | दास also names dāsya-bhāva, one of five classical Vaiṣṇava devotee-relationships to Kṛṣṇa (a worshipper’s elected devotional posture). Must distinguish: Christ became an actual servant by nature/status; this is not a devotee’s chosen mood toward God. |
| likeness of men (ὁμοιώματι ἀνθρώπων) | मानुषसदृशता | mānuṣa-sadṛśatā | High | Humanity of Christ | — | Must always be paired with देहधारणम्’s existing real-not-illusory note; guards against a docetic/māyā “apparent body” misreading. |
| slave/servant (δοῦλος, self-designation) | दासः | dāsaḥ | High | Kenosis / Church | — | Same dāsya-bhāva caution as “form of a servant,” applied to Paul’s own self-designation (1:1). |
| overseer (ἐπίσκοπος) | अध्यक्षः | adhyakṣaḥ | Medium | Unity and Humility in the Church | — | Functional office within मण्डली; distinguish from मठ’s guru-successor hierarchy (baseline church caution). |
| deacon (διάκονος) | सेवकः / परिचारकः | sevakaḥ / paricārakaḥ | Medium | Unity and Humility in the Church | — | As above. |
| bonds / chains / imprisonment (δεσμά) | निगडः / शृङ्खला | nigaḍaḥ / śṛṅkhalā | Critical | Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment | बन्धनम् (rejected as primary) | बन्धनम् is the fundamental pan-Indian soteriological term for saṃsāric bondage (bandha vs. mokṣa). Prefer concrete physical-object terms for Paul’s literal chains; mandatory note distinguishing gospel-imprisonment-with-joy from metaphysical bondage awaiting liberation. |
| to live is Christ, to die is gain | ममैव जीवनं ख्रीष्टः, मरणं च लाभः | mamaiva jīvanaṃ khrīṣṭaḥ, maraṇaṃ ca lābhaḥ | Critical | Salvation / Joy | — | “Gain” is union with Christ, not release from a rebirth-cycle; must cross-reference त्राणम्/पुनरुत्थानम् cautions. |
| suffering (πάθημα / πάσχω, embraced for Christ) | दुःखम् | duḥkham | High | Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment | — | दुःख is Sāṅkhya’s/Buddhism’s foundational category (a problem to escape); Pauline suffering is embraced participation with Christ. Mandatory distinguishing note. |
| conduct as citizens / citizenship (πολιτεύεσθε / πολίτευμα) | पौरत्वम् (verb: पौरवृत्त्या जीवध्वम्) | paurabhāvena; paurātvam | Critical | Citizenship in Heaven | राष्ट्रीयत्वम् | Root shared across 1:27 and 3:20; see full entry below. |
| heavenly citizenship (πολίτευμα ἐν οὐρανοῖς) | स्वर्गीयं पौरत्वम् | svargīyaṃ pauratvam | Critical | Citizenship in Heaven | परमधामः (rejected: itself a Vaiṣṇava term for Kṛṣṇa’s supreme abode, Vaikuṇṭha/Goloka) | स्वर्ग in Purāṇic/Gītā cosmology (Gītā 9:21) is a temporary, merit-exhaustible heavenly reward within saṃsāra. Mandatory note affirming the believer’s heavenly citizenship is permanent, secure, and grace-grounded — never exhausted. Human theologian review mandatory. |
| Savior (σωτήρ) | त्राता | trātā | Critical | Salvation / Citizenship in Heaven | — | Natural agent-noun from त्राणम्’s own √trā root; low-difficulty, high-consistency coinage. |
| knowledge of Christ (γνῶσις/ἐπίγνωσις τοῦ Χριστοῦ) | परिचयः | paricayaḥ | Critical | (New doctrine: Knowledge of Christ, subordinate to Righteousness by Faith) | ज्ञानम् (rejected as primary) | ज्ञान is jñāna-mārga’s technical term for liberating ātman-Brahman self-realization. परिचयः (“personal acquaintance”) preserves the relational, person-directed sense Paul intends. Mandatory redefinition note at every occurrence (3:8, 3:10). |
| fellowship in his sufferings (κοινωνία τῶν παθημάτων) | तस्य दुःखानां सहभागिता | tasya duḥkhānāṃ sahabhāgitā | High | Joy in Suffering / Righteousness by Faith | — | Compound of सहभागिता + दुःखम्; inherits both entries’ cautions. |
| conformed (σύμμορφος) | समरूपः | samarūpaḥ | Medium | Kenosis / Resurrection | — | Shares रूप root with सर्वेश्वररूपम्/दासरूपम् for terminological consistency across the μορφή word-family. |
| pressing toward the goal (ἐπεκτείνομαι, σκοπός, βραβεῖον) | अग्रे धावनम्, लक्ष्यम्, पुरस्कारः | agre dhāvanam, lakṣyam, puraskāraḥ | Medium | Pressing on toward the Goal in Christ | — | पुरस्कार (“prize”) must be distinguished from karma-phala mechanically-earned fruit; this is a grace-empowered race (cf. 4:13). |
| mature/perfect (τέλειος) | परिपक्वः / पूर्णः | paripakvaḥ / pūrṇaḥ | Medium | Pressing on toward the Goal | सिद्धः (rejected) | सिद्ध names the yogic adept possessing the eight classical siddhis (cf. baseline spiritual_gifts caution). Avoided here. |
| contentment (αὐτάρκεια) | संतोषः | santoṣaḥ | Critical | Contentment in All Circumstances | — | संतोष is one of Patañjali’s five niyamas (Yoga Sūtra 2.32), with its own promised fruit (YS 2.42). Retained as working term (best fit, no clean alternative) but requires mandatory redefinition note at every occurrence: contentment as Christ-given and Christ-strengthened (4:13), not self-cultivated yogic attainment. Human theologian review mandatory. |
| virtue/excellence (ἀρετή) | उत्कृष्टता / साधुता | utkṛṣṭatā / sādhutā | Medium-High | (virtue catalogue, 4:8) | गुणः (rejected) | गुण is Sāṅkhya’s triguṇa (sattva-rajas-tamas) technical category, already the basis of the baseline’s guṇa-caution under faith/śraddhā. Avoided here. |
| riches in glory (πλοῦτος ἐν δόξῃ) | महिमायुक्तं वैभवम् | mahimāyuktaṃ vaibhavam | Medium | Contentment / Providence | ऐश्वर्यम् (rejected) | ऐश्वर्य is one of Bhagavān’s six classical Vaiṣṇava opulences (ṣaḍ-guṇa); वैभव avoids this named enumeration. |
| one mind / unity of disposition (τὸ αὐτὸ φρονεῖν) | एकमनस्त्वम् | ekamanastvam | Medium | Unity and Humility in the Church | एकत्वम् (flagged) | Must not be rendered with an ontological “oneness” (ekatva) term suggesting Advaitic non-dual identity; this is relational unity of purpose/love. |
| united in soul (σύμψυχοι) | एकहृदयता | ekahṛdayatā | High | Unity and Humility in the Church | समात्मता / एकात्मता (rejected) | A direct instance of the book-wide caution against आत्मन्-rooted compounds for ordinary “soul/unity” language, given the mahāvākya ātman-Brahman identity risk already Critical in the baseline’s Holy Spirit entry. |
| humility (ταπεινοφροσύνη) | नम्रचित्तता / विनयः | namracittatā / vinayaḥ | High | Unity and Humility in the Church | — | विनय’s classical usage as a student’s deference to a guru (guru-śiṣya-paramparā) must be distinguished from Christlike voluntary self-abasement. |
| vainglory / empty conceit (κενοδοξία) | व्यर्थगौरवाभिमानः | vyartha-gaurava-abhimānaḥ | Medium | Unity and Humility in the Church | — | Wordplay with κενόω (2:7) worth preserving as an exegetical note even though untranslatable directly. |
| compassion/affection (σπλάγχνα) | दया | dayā | Medium | Unity and Humility in the Church | करुणा (rejected: Buddhist brahmavihāra), वात्सल्यम् (rejected: Vaiṣṇava bhakti-rasa devotee-relation) | — |
| mercies (οἰκτιρμοί) | अनुकम्पा | anukampā | Medium | Unity and Humility in the Church | — | Paired term alongside दया to preserve the Greek’s doubled expression. |
| God’s form of God/likeness/confession consistency (ὅτι κύριος Ἰησοῦς Χριστός) | यीशुः ख्रीष्टः प्रभुः अस्ति | yīśuḥ khrīṣṭaḥ prabhuḥ asti | Critical | Lordship of Christ | — | Must match Romans 10:9’s established यीशुः प्रभुः अस्ति exactly in structure/vocabulary, per the baseline’s cross-document consistency rule. |
| heavenly, earthly, under the earth (ἐπουρανίων, ἐπιγείων, καταχθονίων) | स्वर्गस्थाः, पृथिवीस्थाः, पातालस्थाः | svargasthāḥ, pṛthivīsthāḥ, pātālasthāḥ | Medium | Lordship of Christ | — | पाताल names a specific Purāṇic loka; note required that this is a rhetorical totality-merism, not a claim about that specific cosmology. |
| partnership in the gospel (κοινωνία εἰς τὸ εὐαγγέλιον) | सुसमाचारे सहभागिता | susamācāre sahabhāgitā | Medium | Partnership in the Gospel | — | Carries an added material/financial partnership nuance beyond general spiritual “fellowship” (cf. 4:15); do not let this nuance be lost. |
| giving and receiving (δόμα καὶ λῆμψις) | दानग्रहणम् | dāna-grahaṇam | Low | Partnership in the Gospel | — | Commercial-accounting idiom (4:15). |
| sacrifice/service (θυσία, λειτουργία) | बलिदानम् / समर्पणम् | balidānam / samarpaṇam | Medium-High | Partnership in the Gospel / Christ-Centered Ministry | यज्ञः (rejected) | यज्ञ imports Mīmāṃsā’s precise vidhi-governed ritual-efficacy mechanics; avoided for Paul’s voluntary metaphorical self-offering. |
| work out your own salvation (κατεργάζεσθε τὴν ἑαυτῶν σωτηρίαν) | स्वकीयं त्राणं साधयत | svakīyaṃ trāṇaṃ sādhayata | Critical | Salvation | — | Must always be paired with 2:13 (“God who works in you”) to avoid a self-effort/karma-mārga misreading of this clause alone. |
| virtue catalogue term “excellence” — see ἀρετή above | — | — | — | — | — |

All Part A terms must be enforced exactly as recorded in those files; all Part B terms are proposed for formal addition to translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json in the next Phase 1 step, pending Human theologian review of every Critical-tier entry.
Critical Risk Terms
Righteousness
Approved rendering: धार्मिकता
Transliteration: dhārmikatā
Doctrine: Righteousness by Faith versus the Law
Rejected alternatives: धर्मः, न्यायः, पुण्यम्
Original: δικαιοσύνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Philippians. Dharma’s weight cannot be fully escaped by word choice; mandatory explicit redefinition (‘right standing before God through faith, not cosmic/social duty performed’) at every occurrence, including Philippians 3:6, 3:9, where Paul’s own autobiographical renunciation of law-righteousness makes this redefinition unusually urgent.
Imputed Righteousness
Approved rendering: आरोपिता धार्मिकता
Transliteration: āropitā dhārmikatā
Doctrine: Righteousness by Faith versus the Law
Rejected alternatives: अर्जिता धार्मिकता
Original: δικαιοσύνη ἡ ἐκ θεοῦ ἐπὶ τῇ πίστει
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Philippians. Credited, not earned; अर्जिता (‘earned’) remains forbidden. Philippians 3:9: ‘not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ.‘
Salvation
Approved rendering: त्राणम्
Transliteration: trāṇam
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: मोक्षः, मुक्तिः, निर्वाणम्
Original: σωτηρία
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Philippians. Never mokṣa/muktiḥ/nirvāṇam. Philippians 2:12 (‘work out your own salvation’) MUST always be translated/annotated together with 2:13 — see work_out_salvation entry — so this term’s outworking is never mistaken for its self-achieved origin. Occurrences: 1:19, 1:28, 2:12.
Savior
Approved rendering: त्राता
Transliteration: trātā
Doctrine: Citizenship in Heaven
Original: σωτήρ
Category: Salvation
NEW TERM for Philippians. Natural agent-noun sharing त्राणम्’s own √trā root (‘to rescue/protect’) — a low-difficulty, etymologically transparent coinage with no independent classical-school collision. Must be taught alongside citizenship_in_heaven, since the awaited Savior (3:20) is the ground of the believer’s permanent heavenly citizenship.
Resurrection
Approved rendering: पुनरुत्थानम्
Transliteration: punarutthānam
Doctrine: Resurrection and Glorification of Christ
Rejected alternatives: पुनर्जन्म
Original: ἀνάστασις
Category: Eschatology
Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Philippians. Never पुनर्जन्म (the Sāṃkhya-Yoga/Vedānta transmigration mechanism). Philippians 3:10-11 and 3:21 (believers’ ‘lowly body’ transformed into conformity with Christ’s ‘glorious body,’ समरूपः) must be taught as a single, final, once-for-all bodily event, never a repeated embodiment cycle.
Lord
Approved rendering: प्रभुः
Transliteration: prabhuḥ
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ईश्वरः, स्वामी
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Philippians. Never ईश्वरः (Advaita subordination-to-māyā risk). Pervasive throughout Philippians (1:2, 14; 2:11, 19, 24, 29; 3:1, 8, 20; 4:1-2, 4-5, 10, 23) — the letter’s most frequent Critical term.
Son Of God
Approved rendering: परमेश्वरस्य पुत्रः
Transliteration: parameśvarasya putraḥ
Doctrine: Deity and Equality of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ईश्वरांशः, देवपुरुषः
Original: υἱὸς θεοῦ (implicit in μορφῇ θεοῦ, 2:6)
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Philippians. Underlies the Christ-hymn’s presentation of Christ existing eternally ‘in the form of God’ (μορφῇ θεοῦ, 2:6) prior to the kenotic act; never अंशः (a partial ‘portion,’ also used of avatāra theory).
Incarnation
Approved rendering: देहधारणम्
Transliteration: dehadhāraṇam
Doctrine: The Incarnation and Self-Emptying of Christ (Kenosis)
Rejected alternatives: अवतारः
Original: ἐν ὁμοιώματι ἀνθρώπων γενόμενος
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Philippians. Never अवतारः. Philippians 2:7 (‘being born in the likeness of men,’ ἐν ὁμοιώματι ἀνθρώπων γενόμενος) is this book’s central incarnation text; every occurrence must carry or reference the mandatory Bhagavad Gītā 4.7-8 contrast note distinguishing this once-for-all assumption of human nature from avatāra’s periodic, repeatable descent.
Messiah
Approved rendering: मसीहः
Transliteration: masīhaḥ
Doctrine: Deity and Equality of Christ
Rejected alternatives: अवतारपुरुषः
Original: Χριστός (as messianic title)
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Philippians. Reserved for contexts foregrounding the fulfilled Old Testament messianic promise; in Philippians, Χριστός functions primarily as part of Christ’s proper name (see ‘christ’ entry below).
Christ
Approved rendering: ख्रीष्टः
Transliteration: khrīṣṭaḥ
Doctrine: Deity and Equality of Christ
Original: Χριστός
Category: Christology
NEW TERM for Philippians, added because Χριστός here functions overwhelmingly (60+ occurrences) as part of Christ’s proper name (Χριστὸς Ἰησοῦς / Ἰησοῦς Χριστός) rather than as an explicit messianic-title argument as in Romans. Follows the Serampore Sanskrit New Testament transliteration standard already fixed in the baseline AI translation requirements document. Distinguished from ‘messiah’ (मसीहः), which names the fulfilled Old Testament promise specifically.
Jesus
Approved rendering: यीशुः
Transliteration: yīśuḥ
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Philippians. Follows the Serampore Sanskrit New Testament (1808) precedent. Occurs throughout, including the confession-climax at 2:10-11.
God
Approved rendering: सर्वेश्वरः
Transliteration: sarveśvaraḥ
Doctrine: Deity and Equality of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ईश्वरः, ब्रह्मन्, भगवान्, देवः
Original: θεός
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Philippians. Never देवः, भगवान्, ब्रह्मन्, or bare ईश्वरः. सर्वेश्वररूपम् (‘form of God,’ 2:6) and सर्वेश्वरेण समत्वम् (‘equality with God,’ 2:6) are built directly on this term for cross-document consistency.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: पवित्र आत्मा
Transliteration: pavitra ātmā
Doctrine: Fellowship of the Holy Spirit
Rejected alternatives: ब्रह्मन्, परमात्मा
Original: πνεῦμα
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Philippians — the single highest-stakes term in the entire Language Package. Never bare आत्मा without the पवित्र qualifier. Philippians 1:19 (‘Spirit of Jesus Christ’), 2:1 (‘fellowship of the Spirit’), and 3:3 (‘worship by the Spirit of God’) each require the mandatory personhood note. This book-wide caution also governs how ordinary ‘soul/self/life’ language elsewhere in Philippians (ψυχή, ἑαυτόν) must be rendered with जीवः/प्राणः/मनः/स्वयम्, never आत्मन्-vocabulary — see kenosis_self_emptying and united_in_soul entries.
Father
Approved rendering: पिता
Transliteration: pitā
Doctrine: Deity and Equality of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ब्रह्मा, प्रजापतिः
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Philippians. Occurs in the greeting (1:2), the hymn’s purpose-clause (‘to the glory of God the Father,’ 2:11), and the closing doxology (4:20).
Kenosis Self Emptying
Approved rendering: स्वयं रिक्तीकरणम्
Transliteration: svayaṃ riktīkaraṇam
Doctrine: The Incarnation and Self-Emptying of Christ (Kenosis)
Rejected alternatives: आत्मानं शून्यीकरणम्, आत्मत्यागः
Original: ἑαυτὸν ἐκένωσεν
Category: Christology
THE SINGLE HIGHEST-STAKES NEW TERM IN THIS LANGUAGE PACKAGE, structurally parallel in severity to the baseline’s Holy Spirit/ātman entry. The reflexive ἑαυτόν MUST be rendered स्वयम्, NEVER आत्मानम् — ‘he emptied the Ātman’ would be heard by an Advaita-trained reader as the metaphysical Self being voided, the exact doctrinal opposite of Advaita’s teaching that ātman is by nature ever-full (pūrṇa), never subject to loss or becoming. शून्य-rooted vocabulary is forbidden (invokes Madhyamaka Buddhist śūnyatā, a distinct claim about the inherent non-existence of all phenomena, not a voluntary divine act). आत्मत्याग is forbidden (imports Bhagavad Gītā 18’s theorized karma-tyāga renunciation-of-action category). Mandatory theologian-reviewed note at every occurrence (Philippians 2:7).
Form Of God
Approved rendering: सर्वेश्वररूपम्
Transliteration: sarveśvara-rūpam
Doctrine: The Incarnation and Self-Emptying of Christ (Kenosis)
Rejected alternatives: ईश्वररूपम्
Original: μορφὴ θεοῦ
Category: Christology
NEW TERM. Built on सर्वेश्वरः to avoid the ईश्वरः Advaita-subordination risk. रूप itself carries additional risk: it names Viṣṇu’s/Kṛṣṇa’s multiple rūpas (including the cosmic viśvarūpa of Bhagavad Gītā 11), which could suggest ‘one form among several’ a deity may assume, echoing avatāra-multiplicity. Every occurrence MUST carry or reference the same Bhagavad Gītā 4.7-8 contrast note mandated for देहधारणम् — this is Christ’s one, eternal, essential nature, never a temporary or repeatable form. Philippians 2:6.
Equality With God
Approved rendering: सर्वेश्वरेण समत्वम्
Transliteration: sarveśvareṇa samatvam
Doctrine: Deity and Equality of Christ
Original: τὸ εἶναι ἴσα θεῷ
Category: Christology
NEW TERM. समत्व is Advaita Vedānta’s and the Bhagavad Gītā’s (6:29, sarvatra samadarśanaḥ) technical term for the realized non-difference of ātman and Brahman, or a yogi’s equal-vision of all beings — an epistemic attainment, not an eternal ontological status. Must carry an explicit note distinguishing Christ’s eternal, unearned, co-equal divine identity from any generalizable yogic realization available in principle to other beings. Must not be softened into a philosophically ‘safer’ but doctrinally lesser claim. Philippians 2:6.
Bonds Imprisonment
Approved rendering: निगडः / शृङ्खला
Transliteration: nigaḍaḥ / śṛṅkhalā
Doctrine: Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment
Rejected alternatives: बन्धनम्
Original: δεσμά / δεσμοί
Category: Joy and Suffering
NEW TERM. बन्धनम् is REJECTED as primary: it is the fundamental pan-Indian soteriological term for saṃsāric bondage (the bandha from which mokṣa liberates), the basic axis of Sāṅkhya-Yoga-Vedānta metaphysics. Using it for Paul’s literal Roman chains risks the passage being heard as metaphysical bondage of the soul, especially dangerous given the immediate pairing with χαρά/joy. Concrete, physical-object terms निगडः or शृङ्खला required for Paul’s literal chains. Mandatory note: Paul’s joy is not yogic equanimity toward metaphysical bandha, nor liberation through jñāna/karma/bhakti-mārga, but confident hope amid ongoing, literal, unresolved physical confinement. Occurrences: 1:7, 1:13, 1:14, 1:17.
To Live Is Christ To Die Is Gain
Approved rendering: ममैव जीवनं ख्रीष्टः, मरणं च लाभः
Transliteration: mamaiva jīvanaṃ khrīṣṭaḥ, maraṇaṃ ca lābhaḥ
Doctrine: Salvation
Original: τὸ ζῆν Χριστός, τὸ ἀποθανεῖν κέρδος
Category: Salvation
NEW TERM, fixed formula. ‘Gain’ (लाभः) in death is to be understood as being with Christ (cf. 1:23), not release from a rebirth-cycle nor absorption into an impersonal Absolute. Must carry a note tying this verse explicitly to the त्राणम्/पुनरुत्थानम् cautions. Philippians 1:21.
Citizenship In Heaven
Approved rendering: स्वर्गीयं पौरत्वम्
Transliteration: svargīyaṃ pauratvam
Doctrine: Citizenship in Heaven
Rejected alternatives: परमधामः, राष्ट्रीयत्वम्
Original: πολίτευμα / πολιτεύεσθε
Category: Eschatology
NEW TERM. No classical Indian political or religious category corresponds to a permanent civic identity in a transcendent homeland; पौरत्व is coined from the पुर/पौर root with no independent rival collision. स्वर्ग itself, however, is unavoidable and carries a serious risk: in Purāṇic/Bhagavad Gītā cosmology (Gītā 9:21, ‘kṣīṇe puṇye martyalokaṃ viśanti,’ ‘when their merit is exhausted, they return to the world of mortals’), svarga is explicitly a temporary, merit-exhaustible heavenly reward within saṃsāra, never final liberation. परमधामः is also rejected (itself a named Vaikuṇṭha/Goloka term in Vaiṣṇava theology). Every occurrence MUST carry an explicit note citing this Gītā 9.21 contrast, affirming the believer’s heavenly citizenship as permanent, secure, and grace-grounded, never exhausted or forfeited by declining merit. Occurrences: 1:27 (verbal, πολιτεύεσθε), 3:20.
Knowledge Of Christ
Approved rendering: परिचयः
Transliteration: paricayaḥ
Doctrine: Knowledge of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ज्ञानम्
Original: τοῦ γνῶναι αὐτόν / γνῶσις / ἐπίγνωσις
Category: Faith
NEW TERM. ज्ञानम् is REJECTED as primary: it is jñāna-mārga’s technical term for the liberating realization that ātman is Brahman, an impersonal metaphysical self-realization attained by discriminative insight — structurally the same collision the baseline avoided by rejecting श्रद्धा/भक्ति for ‘faith.’ परिचयः (‘personal acquaintance/familiarity’) is required as the primary rendering; ज्ञानम् may appear only inside a heavily qualified compound with a mandatory distinguishing note, exactly as आत्मा is confined to पवित्र आत्मा. Mandatory redefinition note at every occurrence: personal, relational acquaintance with the person of Christ gained through faith, not non-dual self-realization gained through jñāna-mārga discipline. Occurrences: 3:8, 3:10.
Contentment
Approved rendering: संतोषः
Transliteration: santoṣaḥ
Doctrine: Contentment in All Circumstances
Original: αὐτάρκης / αὐτάρκεια
Category: Contentment
NEW TERM, no viable unencumbered alternative exists. संतोषः is Patañjali’s precisely theorized fifth niyama (Yoga Sūtra 2.32), with its own promised fruit stated at Yoga Sūtra 2.42 (‘from contentment, supreme happiness is attained’) — a self-cultivated yogic virtue earned through disciplined practice on the path to kaivalya. Retained as the working term (best available fit) but MANDATES an explicit redefinition note at every occurrence: contentment as the fruit of dependence on and strengthening by Christ (cross-reference 4:13), explicitly distinguished from the Yoga Sūtra niyama attained through one’s own discipline. Philippians 4:11.
Jesus Is Lord Confession
Approved rendering: यीशुः ख्रीष्टः प्रभुः अस्ति
Transliteration: yīśuḥ khrīṣṭaḥ prabhuḥ asti
Doctrine: Exaltation and Universal Confession of Christ
Original: κύριος Ἰησοῦς Χριστός
Category: Christology
NEW compound formula, directly parallel to the salvation confession fixed for Romans 10:9 (यीशुः प्रभुः अस्ति). Per the baseline’s cross-document consistency rule, MUST be rendered using the identical building blocks: यीशुः, ख्रीष्टः, प्रभुः. Philippians 2:11.
Name Above Every Name
Approved rendering: सर्वनामोपरि नाम
Transliteration: sarva-nāma-upari nāma
Doctrine: Exaltation and Universal Confession of Christ
NEW TERM for ὄνομα τὸ ὑπὲρ πᾶν ὄνομα (2:9), confirmed by v.11 to be the name/title ‘Lord.’ Directly continuous with the Critical lordship_of_christ doctrine; treat as the setup for the jesus_is_lord_confession entry.
Work Out Salvation
Approved rendering: स्वकीयं त्राणं साधयत
Transliteration: svakīyaṃ trāṇaṃ sādhayata
Doctrine: Salvation
Original: κατεργάζεσθε τὴν ἑαυτῶν σωτηρίαν
Category: Salvation
NEW TERM. In isolation this clause risks sounding like self-achieved liberation through effort, echoing karma-mārga/jñāna-mārga self-effort frameworks that त्राणम् was specifically chosen to avoid. MUST always be translated and annotated together with 2:13 (‘God who works in you’), so the outworking is never mistaken for salvation’s origin. Philippians 2:12.
High Risk Terms
Gospel
Approved rendering: सुसमाचारः
Transliteration: susamācāraḥ
Doctrine: Gospel
Rejected alternatives: शुभवार्ता
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Philippians. Follows the 1808 Serampore Sanskrit New Testament precedent. In Philippians this term additionally anchors ‘partnership in the gospel’ (1:5, 4:15), paired with सहभागिता — see partnership_in_gospel entry. Occurrences: 1:5, 1:7, 1:12, 1:27, 2:22, 4:3, 4:15.
Grace
Approved rendering: अनुग्रहः
Transliteration: anugrahaḥ
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: कृपा, प्रसादः, पुण्यम्
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Philippians. Unmerited favor, never prasāda’s ritual offering-and-return structure or karmaphala’s automatic result. Philippians 2:9’s ἐχαρίσατο (echaristo) shares χάρις’s own root — render with the अनुग्रह root (अनुग्रहेण अयच्छत्) to preserve this etymological link. Occurrences: 1:2, 1:7, 2:9, 4:23.
Faith
Approved rendering: विश्वासः
Transliteration: viśvāsaḥ
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: श्रद्धा, भक्तिः
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Philippians. Never śraddhā (Gītā 17’s threefold guṇa-classified term) or bhakti (a named soteriological mārga). Directly contrasted with law-righteousness at 3:9. Occurrences: 1:25, 1:27, 2:17, 3:9.
Law
Approved rendering: विधिः
Transliteration: vidhiḥ
Doctrine: Righteousness by Faith versus the Law
Rejected alternatives: धर्मः, धर्मशास्त्रम्
Original: νόμος
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Philippians. Drawn from Mīmāṃsā’s vidhi (positive scriptural injunction) vocabulary, not the broader varṇāśrama-tied dharmaśāstra genre. Occurrences: 3:5, 3:6, 3:9.
Called
Approved rendering: आहूतः
Transliteration: āhūtaḥ
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Rejected alternatives: निमन्त्रितः
Original: κλητός / κλῆσις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Philippians. God’s sovereign summons, not human ritual āhvāna directed at a deity.
Calling
Approved rendering: आह्वानम्
Transliteration: āhvānam
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Rejected alternatives: निमन्त्रणम्
Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Philippians. Philippians 3:14: ‘the upward call (klēsis) of God in Christ Jesus’ — the goal-orienting summons of the pressing-toward-the-goal race.
Holy
Approved rendering: पवित्रम्
Transliteration: pavitram
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: शुद्धम्
Original: ἅγιος
Category: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Philippians. Moral and relational set-apartness, not the Vedic ritual-mechanical sense of pavitra as a physical purifying instrument.
Saints
Approved rendering: पवित्राः जनाः
Transliteration: pavitrāḥ janāḥ
Doctrine: Sainthood
Rejected alternatives: ऋषयः, संन्यासिनः
Original: ἅγιοι
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Philippians. Corporate designation for all believers, never an inspired ṛṣi-elite or a formal saṃnyāsin renunciate class. Philippians 1:1 addresses ‘all the saints at Philippi’; 4:21-22 sends greetings from ‘all the saints,’ including ‘those of Caesar’s household’ — underscoring non-elite, corporate scope.
Sanctification
Approved rendering: पवित्रीकरणम्
Transliteration: pavitrīkaraṇam
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: शुद्धिः
Original: ἁγιασμός (cf. ἐπιτελέσει, 1:6; ἐν ὑμῖν, 2:13)
Category: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Philippians. The Spirit’s ongoing work, not Vedic ritual purification or yogic self-directed śuddhi. Philippians 1:6 and 2:12-13 together describe this as God-initiated, God-completed, God-empowered.
Peace
Approved rendering: शान्तिः
Transliteration: śāntiḥ
Doctrine: Peace of God
Rejected alternatives: निर्वृत्तिः
Original: εἰρήνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package; risk raised from the baseline’s Medium to High for Philippians given the added weight of 4:7 (‘the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding’), distinct from Yoga Sūtra 1.2’s citta-vṛtti-nirodha. Render νοῦς (‘understanding,’ 4:7) with the comparatively neutral मनः, never बुद्धि, to avoid importing Sāṅkhya’s antaḥkaraṇa apparatus. Occurrences: 1:2, 4:7, 4:9.
Glory
Approved rendering: महिमा
Transliteration: mahimā
Doctrine: Deity and Equality of Christ
Rejected alternatives: तेजस्
Original: δόξα
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Philippians. Never तेजस् (Devī Māhātmyam goddess-formation associations). Occurrences: 1:11, 2:11, 3:19 (false teachers’ ‘glory in their shame’), 3:21, 4:19-20.
Power Of God
Approved rendering: सामर्थ्यम्
Transliteration: sāmarthyam
Doctrine: Providence
Rejected alternatives: शक्तिः
Original: δύναμις
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Philippians. Never शक्तिः (hypostasized Śākta divine-feminine creative power). Occurrences: 3:10 (‘power of his resurrection’), 3:21, 4:13 (ἐνδυναμοῦντι, ‘him who strengthens me’).
Providence
Approved rendering: परमेश्वरस्य विधानम्
Transliteration: parameśvarasya vidhānam
Doctrine: Providence
Rejected alternatives: भाग्यम्, दैवम्, कर्मफलम्
Original: ὁ ἐνεργῶν ἐν ὑμῖν / πληρώσει πᾶσαν χρείαν
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Philippians. Never भाग्यम्/दैवम्/कर्मफलम्. Governs 1:6, 2:13, and 4:19 (‘will supply every need according to his riches in glory’ — see riches_in_glory entry, which avoids ऐश्वर्यम्).
Obedience Of Faith
Approved rendering: विश्वासस्य आज्ञापालनम्
Transliteration: viśvāsasya ājñāpālanam
Doctrine: Incarnation and Self-Emptying of Christ (Kenosis)
Rejected alternatives: धर्माचरणम्
Original: ὑπήκοος
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Philippians. Never धर्माचरणम् (duty-bound varṇāśrama conduct). Philippians 2:8 describes Christ’s own perfect obedience ‘to the point of death,’ the pattern for believers’ obedience in 2:12.
Love
Approved rendering: प्रेम
Transliteration: prema
Doctrine: Love in Christian Community
Rejected alternatives: स्नेहः, प्रीतिः
Original: ἀγάπη
Category: Unity and Humility in the Church
NEW TERM. प्रेम is Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava bhakti-rasa theology’s central technical term for the topmost stage of the devotional sādhana-ladder (Rūpa Gosvāmī’s Bhaktirasāmṛtasindhu), climaxing in the aesthetic-erotic Kṛṣṇa-prema of the mādhurya-rasa. Retained as primary rendering for best semantic fit and existing Christian Sanskrit usage, but mandates an explicit redefinition note at first occurrence (1:9): covenantal, self-emptying love enacted historically in Christ, immediately illustrated by the kenosis hymn (2:6-8), not the aesthetic devotional rasa-stages of Kṛṣṇa-bhakti. Occurrences: 1:9, 1:16, 2:1-2.
Joy
Approved rendering: हर्षः
Transliteration: harṣaḥ
Doctrine: Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment
Rejected alternatives: आनन्दः
Original: χαρά / χαίρω
Category: Joy and Suffering
NEW TERM; the book’s dominant, repeated motif. आनन्दः is rejected as primary: Vedānta’s technical term for Brahman’s own bliss-nature (sat-cit-ānanda; Taittirīya Upaniṣad’s ānandamaya-kośa), risking a metaphysical Self-realization reading rather than relational, circumstance-transcending joy grounded in union with a personal Christ. हर्षः MUST be used consistently across all 11 occurrences: 1:4, 1:18, 1:25, 2:2, 2:17-18, 2:28-29, 3:1, 4:1, 4:4, 4:10. Any single lapse into आनन्दः anywhere in a derivative document reopens the metaphysical-bliss reading.
Self Humbling
Approved rendering: स्वयं नम्रीकरणम्
Transliteration: svayaṃ namrīkaraṇam
Doctrine: The Incarnation and Self-Emptying of Christ (Kenosis)
Rejected alternatives: तपस्
Original: ἐταπείνωσεν ἑαυτόν
Category: Christology
NEW TERM. Render the reflexive with स्वयम्, never आत्मानम् (same book-wide caution as kenosis). Never तपस् (ascetic self-mortification practiced for merit/yogic power, cf. baseline’s siddhi caution): Christ’s humbling is a once-for-all act of obedience accomplishing salvation for others, not a disciplined practice generating spiritual attainment for the practitioner. Philippians 2:8.
Thing To Be Grasped
Approved rendering: स्वार्थेन ग्रहणीयं पदम्
Transliteration: svārthena grahaṇīyaṃ padam
Doctrine: The Incarnation and Self-Emptying of Christ (Kenosis)
Original: ἁρπαγμός
Category: Christology
NEW TERM, descriptive phrase (no single-word classical Sanskrit equivalent for this rare, near-hapax Greek term ἁρπαγμός). Preserves the interpretive stance that Christ possessed but did not exploit equality with God, guarding explicitly against an Arian-adjacent ‘not yet equal with God’ misreading. Philippians 2:6.
Form Of A Servant
Approved rendering: दासरूपम्
Transliteration: dāsa-rūpam
Doctrine: Servanthood and Self-Humbling
Original: μορφὴν δούλου
Category: Christology
NEW TERM. Shares the रूप root of सर्वेश्वररूपम् for terminological consistency across the μορφή word-family. दास also names dāsya-bhāva, one of five classical Vaiṣṇava devotee-relationships to Kṛṣṇa (a worshipper’s elected devotional posture). Must be explicitly distinguished: the eternal Son became an actual servant by nature and status; this is not a devotee choosing a servant-mood toward God — the direction of the relationship is reversed. Philippians 2:7.
Likeness Of Men
Approved rendering: मानुषसदृशता
Transliteration: mānuṣa-sadṛśatā
Doctrine: Humanity of Christ
Original: ὁμοιώματι ἀνθρώπων
Category: Christology
NEW TERM. Must always be paired with देहधारणम् and its accompanying note that Christ’s humanity is real and permanent, guarding against a docetic or māyā-style ‘apparent body’ reading, the same risk flagged under the baseline’s humanity_of_christ doctrine. Philippians 2:7.
Servant Slave
Approved rendering: दासः
Transliteration: dāsaḥ
Doctrine: Servanthood and Self-Humbling
Original: δοῦλος
Category: Church
NEW TERM. Same dāsya-bhāva caution as form_of_a_servant: Paul’s and Timothy’s self-designation (1:1, δοῦλος) is an actual, given status of ownership/obligation flowing from redemption, not one devotional mood elected among several.
Suffering
Approved rendering: दुःखम्
Transliteration: duḥkham
Doctrine: Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment
Original: πάσχω / πάθημα
Category: Joy and Suffering
NEW TERM. दुःख is the foundational technical category of both the Sāṅkhya Kārikā (opening verse) and the Buddhist Four Noble Truths — in both systems, a condition to be eliminated or transcended. Paul’s usage differs in kind: suffering embraced, even sought, as participation with Christ (1:29; 3:10, κοινωνία τῶν παθημάτων). Mandatory clarifying note wherever this term renders Pauline suffering-for-Christ’s-sake, since no unencumbered synonym exists.
Fellowship Of Sufferings
Approved rendering: तस्य दुःखानां सहभागिता
Transliteration: tasya duḥkhānāṃ sahabhāgitā
Doctrine: Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment
Original: κοινωνία τῶν παθημάτων αὐτοῦ
Category: Joy and Suffering
NEW TERM, compound of सहभागिता and दुःखम्; inherits both entries’ cautions, particularly the distinction from the Sāṅkhya/Buddhist duḥkha-to-be-eliminated framework. Philippians 3:10.
United In Soul
Approved rendering: एकहृदयता
Transliteration: ekahṛdayatā
Doctrine: Unity and Humility in the Church
Rejected alternatives: समात्मता, एकात्मता
Original: σύμψυχοι
Category: Unity and Humility in the Church
NEW TERM. Any आत्मन्-rooted compound (समात्मता, एकात्मता) would be the single most dangerous rendering available for σύμψυχοι, directly activating the mahāvākya ātman-Brahman identity claims already Critical under the baseline’s Holy Spirit entry. एकहृदयता (‘one-heartedness’) is REQUIRED instead, preserving relational unity while entirely avoiding आत्मन् vocabulary. Philippians 2:2.
Humility
Approved rendering: नम्रचित्तता / विनयः
Transliteration: namracittatā / vinayaḥ
Doctrine: Unity and Humility in the Church
Original: ταπεινοφροσύνη
Category: Unity and Humility in the Church
NEW TERM. विनयः is attested broadly in classical nīti literature but carries Medium-High risk: its ordinary classical usage names a student’s deference toward a guru within the guru-śiṣya-paramparā — hierarchical social etiquette, not voluntary self-abasement. Mandatory note: this is Christlike self-lowering choice, patterned on 2:6-8, not social protocol toward a superior. Philippians 2:3.
Exaltation Of Christ
Approved rendering: अत्युन्नतिः
Transliteration: atyunnatiḥ
Doctrine: Exaltation and Universal Confession of Christ
NEW TERM for ὑπερύψωσεν (‘God highly exalted him,’ 2:9). Low classical-school collision; ensure it is not confused with karmaphala-style automatic reward for good conduct — this is the Father’s sovereign, gracious act of vindication (cf. grace entry), the reversal-pattern of self-humbling followed by exaltation.
Medium Risk Terms
Apostle
Approved rendering: प्रेषितः
Transliteration: preṣitaḥ
Doctrine: Apostleship
Rejected alternatives: गुरुः, ऋषिः
Original: ἀπόστολος
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Philippians. Context-sensitive in this book: at 1:1 the foundational Apostolic office Paul holds; at 2:25 (of Epaphroditus, ‘your messenger’) a lower-case sense of delegated envoy, not the office of the Twelve or Paul. Flag this distinction explicitly at each occurrence, parallel to the baseline’s handling of ‘called.‘
Church
Approved rendering: मण्डली
Transliteration: maṇḍalī
Doctrine: Church Leadership and Offices
Rejected alternatives: मन्दिरम्, मठः
Original: ἐκκλησία
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Philippians. Never मन्दिरम् or मठः. Philippians 4:15: ‘no church shared with me… except you only.‘
Israel
Approved rendering: इस्राएलः
Transliteration: isrāelaḥ
Doctrine: True Circumcision and Jewish Credentials
Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Philippians. Occurrence: 3:5 (Paul’s Jewish credentials catalogue).
Mission
Approved rendering: सुसमाचारप्रचारः
Transliteration: susamācāraprachāraḥ
Doctrine: Gospel
Original: εὐαγγέλιον / συνεργός
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package; enforced exactly for Philippians. Descriptive, non-triumphalist tone appropriate to this scholarly/liturgical audience. Occurrences: 1:5, 1:12, 2:22.
Overseer
Approved rendering: अध्यक्षः
Transliteration: adhyakṣaḥ
Doctrine: Church Leadership and Offices
Original: ἐπίσκοπος
Category: Church
NEW TERM. Functional office within मण्डली, distinguished explicitly from मठः’s guru-successor lineage authority structure (baseline church caution). Philippians 1:1.
Deacon
Approved rendering: सेवकः / परिचारकः
Transliteration: sevakaḥ / paricārakaḥ
Doctrine: Church Leadership and Offices
Original: διάκονος
Category: Church
NEW TERM. Same caution as overseer: a functional local-church office, not a guru-paramparā status. Philippians 1:1.
Conformed
Approved rendering: समरूपः
Transliteration: samarūpaḥ
Doctrine: Resurrection and Glorification of Christ
Original: σύμμορφος
Category: Eschatology
NEW TERM. Shares the रूप root of सर्वेश्वररूपम् and दासरूपम् for terminological consistency across the μορφή word-family. No new named collision beyond the general रूप/avatāra-form caution already flagged at 2:6. Occurrences: 3:10 (‘becoming like him in his death’), 3:21.
Pressing Toward Goal
Approved rendering: अग्रे धावनम्, लक्ष्यम्, पुरस्कारः
Transliteration: agre dhāvanam, lakṣyam, puraskāraḥ
Doctrine: Pressing on toward the Goal in Christ
Original: ἐπεκτείνομαι / σκοπός / βραβεῖον
Category: Sanctification
NEW TERMS for ἐπεκτείνομαι (‘straining forward’), σκοπός (‘goal’), βραβεῖον (‘prize’). पुरस्कार must be distinguished from karma-phala, the automatic, mechanically-earned fruit of ritual/moral action — this is a grace-empowered race sustained by Christ’s strength (4:13), not a self-earned mechanical result. Philippians 3:12-14.
Mature Perfect
Approved rendering: परिपक्वः / पूर्णः
Transliteration: paripakvaḥ / pūrṇaḥ
Doctrine: Pressing on toward the Goal in Christ
Rejected alternatives: सिद्धः
Original: τέλειος
Category: Sanctification
NEW TERM. सिद्धः is REJECTED: it names the yogic adept possessing the eight classical siddhis (cf. baseline’s spiritual_gifts caution). 3:12 explicitly denies Paul has ‘already attained’ — a false cognate with siddhi-attainment would be doctrinally reversed. Philippians 3:15.
Riches In Glory
Approved rendering: महिमायुक्तं वैभवम्
Transliteration: mahimāyuktaṃ vaibhavam
Doctrine: God’s Provision and Riches in Glory
Rejected alternatives: ऐश्वर्यम्
Original: τὸ πλοῦτος αὐτοῦ ἐν δόξῃ
Category: God
NEW TERM. ऐश्वर्यम् is REJECTED: it is one of the six classical guṇas/opulences (ṣaḍ-guṇa) systematically attributed to Bhagavān in Vaiṣṇava theology. वैभवम् preferred as the less-schooled alternative. Philippians 4:19.
Virtue Excellence
Approved rendering: उत्कृष्टता / साधुता
Transliteration: utkṛṣṭatā / sādhutā
Doctrine: Virtue and Christian Ethics
Rejected alternatives: गुणः
Original: ἀρετή
Category: Ethics
NEW TERM. गुणः is REJECTED: Sāṅkhya cosmology’s central technical term for the three fundamental strands of prakṛti (sattva, rajas, tamas), the same framework already flagged in the baseline’s rejection of śraddhā for faith. Philippians 4:8 (ἀρετή).
One Mind Unity
Approved rendering: एकमनस्त्वम्
Transliteration: ekamanastvam
Doctrine: Unity and Humility in the Church
Rejected alternatives: एकत्वम्
Original: τὸ αὐτὸ φρονεῖν / ἓν φρονοῦντες
Category: Unity and Humility in the Church
NEW TERM. Bare एकत्वम् (‘oneness’) is avoided as it risks an ontological reading suggesting Advaitic non-dual identity of all selves/Brahman; this is relational unity of love and purpose, not metaphysical identity of being. Philippians 2:2.
Vainglory
Approved rendering: व्यर्थगौरवाभिमानः
Transliteration: vyartha-gaurava-abhimānaḥ
Doctrine: Unity and Humility in the Church
Original: κενοδοξία
Category: Unity and Humility in the Church
NEW TERM, descriptive coinage rather than borrowing महिमा (reserved for God’s true glory), to avoid conflating false human vainglory with divine glory. Exegetically significant wordplay with κενόω/kenosis at 2:7 worth preserving as a translator note even though untranslatable directly. Philippians 2:3.
Compassion Affection
Approved rendering: दया
Transliteration: dayā
Doctrine: Unity and Humility in the Church
Rejected alternatives: करुणा, वात्सल्यम्
Original: σπλάγχνα
Category: Unity and Humility in the Church
NEW TERM. करुणा is REJECTED: the technical name of one of Buddhism’s four brahmavihāra (sublime abodes) and the defining virtue of the Bodhisattva ideal. वात्सल्यम् is REJECTED: one of the classical bhakti-rasa devotee-relationships to Kṛṣṇa. दया preferred as the plainer, less-schooled option. Philippians 2:1.
Mercies
Approved rendering: अनुकम्पा
Transliteration: anukampā
Doctrine: Unity and Humility in the Church
Original: οἰκτιρμοί
Category: Unity and Humility in the Church
NEW TERM, paired alongside दया to preserve the Greek’s doubled expression (σπλάγχνα καὶ οἰκτιρμοί). Philippians 2:1.
Heavens Earth Underworld
Approved rendering: स्वर्गस्थाः, पृथिवीस्थाः, पातालस्थाः
Transliteration: svargasthāḥ, pṛthivīsthāḥ, pātālasthāḥ
Doctrine: Exaltation and Universal Confession of Christ
Original: ἐπουρανίων καὶ ἐπιγείων καὶ καταχθονίων
Category: Christology
NEW TERM, a threefold merism (2:10) expressing the totality of all created beings everywhere. पाताल names a specific realm within the Purāṇic fourteen-loka cosmological system (the netherworld of nāgas and certain asuras); a brief clarifying note is required that this is a rhetorical totality-merism for ‘every being without exception,’ not a claim mapping onto that specific cosmology.
Every Knee Shall Bow
Approved rendering: सर्वं जानु नमेत्
Transliteration: sarvaṃ jānu nameta
Doctrine: Exaltation and Universal Confession of Christ
NEW TERM, straightforward rendering of πᾶν γόνυ κάμψῃ (2:10); echoes Isaiah 45:23 cited here for Christ. No independent classical-school collision beyond the surrounding merism note above.
Partnership In Gospel
Approved rendering: सुसमाचारे सहभागिता
Transliteration: susamācāre sahabhāgitā
Doctrine: Partnership in the Gospel
Original: κοινωνία εἰς τὸ εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Church
NEW TERM. Carries an added concrete, material-partnership nuance (financial and practical support, cf. 4:15) beyond the general spiritual ‘fellowship’ sense used elsewhere; flag so this nuance is not lost when सहभागिता is reused. Philippians 1:5.
Sacrifice Service
Approved rendering: समर्पणम् / बलिदानम्
Transliteration: samarpaṇam / balidānam
Doctrine: Partnership in the Gospel
Rejected alternatives: यज्ञः
Original: θυσία / λειτουργία / σπένδομαι
Category: Church
NEW TERM. यज्ञः is REJECTED: the precise technical term for Vedic ritual sacrifice, governed by Mīmāṃsā’s exacting vidhi mechanics for ritual efficacy, which would import a ritual-mechanical structure foreign to Paul’s voluntary, metaphorical self-offering. Occurrences: 2:17 (σπένδομαι), 2:30, 4:18.
Circumcision
Approved rendering: त्वक्च्छेदः
Transliteration: tvakchedaḥ
