Semantic Analysis

07 — Semantic Analysis: 2 John (Koine Greek → Sanskrit)

Curriculum: 2 John Core passage: 2 John 1:4–11 Book structure note: 2 John is a single chapter of 13 verses. Per the PRD Phase 1 full-book-coverage mandate, this analysis therefore covers the entire book: the core passage (vv. 4–11) receives full verse-by-verse treatment, and the remainder of the chapter (vv. 1–3, 12–13) receives the same term-level rigor in Part B, so that no verse of the book is silently skipped. Because 2 John has only one chapter, “chapter-by-chapter” coverage and “whole-book” coverage are here the same exercise.

All renderings below that duplicate a term already fixed in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json reuse that rendering exactly and are marked “REUSED.” Terms new to this curriculum are marked “NEW” and are assigned a risk tier using the same Critical/High/Medium/Low framework as the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json.

Book Overview

2 John is written by “the elder” (ὁ πρεσβύτερος) — traditionally the Apostle John — to “the elect lady and her children” (either a literal Christian woman and her household, or, more likely by scholarly consensus, a personification of a local congregation and its members). Its four curriculum doctrines map directly onto its structure:

  • vv. 1–3: Greeting, establishing truth and love as the letter’s frame.
  • vv. 4–6: Walking in Truth and Love (core passage begins).
  • vv. 7–11: Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation, and the resulting Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment problem (vv. 10–11).
  • v. 9 in particular carries Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ.
  • vv. 12–13: Closing.

PART A — Core Passage Verse-by-Verse Analysis (2 John 1:4–11)

Verse 4

“I rejoiced greatly to find some of your children walking in truth, just as we received commandment from the Father.”

TermOriginalTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningSanskrit Rendering & Risk
rejoicedἐχάρηνecharēn”was made to rejoice” (aorist passive of χαίρω)Joy, gladness, delightrejoiced greatly / was overjoyed / was very gladPastoral joy at evidence of genuine discipleship.NEW. हर्षः (harṣaḥ), verb अहर्षम्. Medium risk. आनन्दः (ānandaḥ) is explicitly rejected: in Advaita Vedānta ānanda is one-third of Brahman’s own nature (sat-cit-ānanda, Taittirīya Upaniṣad 2.1.1) — the bliss of Self-realization, not relational gladness at another’s faithfulness. हर्षः carries no such metaphysical freight.
childrenτέκνων (τέκνον)teknōn (teknon)offspring, those born ofLiteral children; figuratively, converts/congregation memberschildren / offspringEither the lady’s literal children or, more likely, members of a congregation John helped establish.NEW. सन्तानाः (santānāḥ). Low risk. Standard familial term; the literal/figurative ambiguity must be flagged in context notes but carries no doctrinal-collision risk.
walkingπεριπατοῦντας (περιπατέω)peripatountas (peripateō)to walk about, go on footMetaphor: to conduct one’s life, live habitually in a mannerwalking / living / conducting themselvesHabitual, ongoing conduct — not a single act but a life pattern.NEW. आचरणम्/आचरन्तः (ācaraṇam/ācarantaḥ). High risk. Must not collapse into धर्माचरणम् (“conduct according to dharma”), the term the baseline Romans package already rejected for “obedience of faith” precisely because it reframes Christian conduct as varṇāśrama duty-performance. Here the same danger recurs: “walking in truth” must be taught as a life shaped by relational fidelity to Christ’s teaching, not ritual/social duty fulfillment.
in truthἐν ἀληθείᾳ (ἀλήθεια)en alētheia (alētheia)in/with truthReality, veracity, fidelity to fact; in John’s writings, the revealed reality of God in Christin truth / in the truth / truthfullyThe specific body of apostolic truth about who Christ is and what he has done — not truth in the abstract.NEW — CRITICAL. सत्यम् (satyam). See dedicated note below.
commandmentἐντολήν (ἐντολή)entolēn (entolē)order, injunction, chargeA specific directive with binding authoritycommandment / command / instructionThe Father’s authoritative charge, transmitted through Christ and the apostles, that believers walk in truth and love.NEW. आज्ञा (ājñā). Medium risk. Root shared with the baseline’s obedience_of_faith compound (विश्वासस्य आज्ञापालनम्); reuse of आज्ञा here is therefore consistent with existing package usage. Risk is that आज्ञा alone can sound like an arbitrary order rather than a loving charge flowing from relationship with the Father — must be paired with relational framing.
Fatherπατρός (πατήρ)patros (patēr)fatherPersonal, relational father; here, God the FatherFatherGod as personal Father, source of the commandment.REUSED from baseline. पिता (pitā). Critical. Never ब्रह्मा or प्रजापतिः (see baseline father entry).

CRITICAL TERM NOTE — ἀλήθεια / सत्यम् (satyam): This is the single most consequential new term this curriculum introduces, and it is assessed Critical, on a par with the baseline’s treatment of “righteousness” and “Holy Spirit.” सत्यम् is not a neutral descriptive word available for the taking: it is the direct predicate of Brahman itself in Vedānta’s central self-definition — “satyaṁ jñānam anantaṁ brahma” (“Brahman is truth, knowledge, infinity,” Taittirīya Upaniṣad 2.1.1). Compounding the risk, 2 John 1:1 pairs ἀλήθεια directly with the verb “to know” (γινώσκοντες τὴν ἀλήθειαν, “all who know the truth”) — a construction that, read through Advaita Vedānta’s jñāna-mārga, sounds exactly like the soteriological formula for liberating Self-knowledge (knowing that ātman is Brahman, i.e. is Satya). An untrained rendering risks a Sanskrit reader hearing 2 John’s “walking in truth” and “knowing the truth” not as fidelity to the apostolic gospel about the incarnate, risen, returning Christ, but as pursuit of jñāna-mārga’s liberating knowledge of the impersonal Absolute. There is no available synonym that escapes this weight (ऋतम्, Vedic cosmic-order-truth, is if anything more heavily theorized; यथार्थम्, “factual/accurate,” is safer but breaks with the near-certain Serampore-tradition precedent of सत्यम् for ἀλήθεια throughout the Johannine corpus and Gospels). सत्यम् must therefore be retained but never left undefined: every occurrence in this curriculum requires an explicit gloss — “the revealed reality of who Christ is and what the apostles have taught concerning him, received and held in relationship with a personal God, not identity of the self with an impersonal Absolute.”

Related term — “know” (γινώσκοντες, v.1): NEW, High risk. जानाति/जानन्तः is preferred over any ज्ञान-derived nominal form (ज्ञानम्) specifically because ज्ञानम् is the technical noun naming the jñāna-mārga path itself; the verb जानाति keeps the ordinary cognitive/relational sense of “knowing” without invoking the path-name.

Verse 5

“And now I ask you, lady — not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but the one we have had from the beginning — that we love one another.”

TermOriginalTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningSanskrit Rendering & Risk
new commandmentἐντολὴν καινὴνentolēn kainēnfresh/unprecedented orderNovelty vs. continuity of revealed instructionnew commandmentJohn stresses continuity: this is not new doctrine but the church’s original, apostolic charge.NEW. नवीना आज्ञा — combines आज्ञा (see v.4) with नवीन (new). Low risk, mainly a consistency note rather than a doctrinal collision.
from the beginningἀπ᾽ ἀρχῆςap’ archēsfrom [the] originThe start of the Christian movement / of the recipients’ own discipleshipfrom the beginning / from the firstAnchors the command in apostolic tradition, not private innovation.NEW. आदितः/प्रारम्भात् (āditaḥ/prārambhāt). Low risk. Standard temporal phrase.
love one anotherἀγαπῶμεν ἀλλήλους (ἀγαπάω)agapōmen allēlous (agapaō)that we might love each otherSelf-giving, other-directed love commanded of believers as a community normthat we love one anotherThe commandment’s content: mutual, covenantal love within the believing community.NEW — HIGH. See dedicated note below.

HIGH-RISK TERM NOTE — ἀγαπάω / प्रेम (prema): प्रेम is assessed High risk because it is the operative technical term of Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava (Caitanya) devotional theology, where prema-bhakti — ecstatic, cultivated loving devotion to Kṛṣṇa — is systematically theorized across an entire literature (e.g. Rūpa Gosvāmī’s Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu) as the perfected fruit of bhakti practice, classified by rasa (devotional flavor/mood). Rendering ἀγαπάω with प्रेम therefore risks the term being heard as an emotionally cultivated devotional attainment achieved through practice, rather than as the Father’s own self-giving love, commanded of and enabled in all believers regardless of devotional attainment. भक्तिः is explicitly rejected here for the same reason it was rejected for “faith” in the baseline package — it names an entire soteriological path, not a general disposition — and is doubly unsuitable here since prema-bhakti’s whole architecture is built on it. स्नेहः (affectionate fondness, e.g. familial affection) is too weak to carry ἀγαπή’s covenantal, commanded, self-giving force. प्रेम is retained as the best available option (consistent with the Serampore tradition) but must carry an explicit gloss distinguishing it from cultivated devotional rasa-attainment: this is God’s own character, commanded of and given to ordinary believers as a mark of obedience, not an elite mystical achievement.

Verse 6

“And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, so that you should walk in it.”

This verse redeploys exactly the terms already treated: ἀγάπη (प्रेम, High), περιπατέω (आचरणम्, High), ἐντολή (आज्ञा, Medium), ἀπ᾽ ἀρχῆς (आदितः, Low). The theological weight of the verse lies not in a new term but in its definitional structure: love is defined as obedient walking, not as sentiment. Translators must ensure the Sanskrit construction preserves this equation (love = walking-according-to-commandments) rather than allowing प्रेम and आचरणम् to read as two separate, loosely associated ideas — a risk heightened by the fact that in Gauḍīya theology prema is the ecstatic fruit of bhakti-practice rather than practice’s very definition, an inversion of the relationship 2 John asserts.

Verse 7

“For many deceivers have gone out into the world, who do not confess Jesus Christ coming in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist.”

TermOriginalTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningSanskrit Rendering & Risk
deceiversπλάνοι (πλάνος)planoi (planos)wanderers, those who lead astrayImpostors, false teachers, seducers from truthdeceivers / seducers / impostorsFalse teachers actively propagating error about Christ’s person, not innocent mistake-makers.NEW. वञ्चकाः (vañcakāḥ, sg. Medium risk. A common word for cheat/trickster with no specific darśana attachment, but must retain doctrinal (not merely commercial-fraud) seriousness in context.
the worldτὸν κόσμον (κόσμος)ton kosmon (kosmos)the ordered universe/inhabited worldPhysical cosmos; humanity at large; the sphere of life organized in opposition to God (Johannine usage)the worldThe sphere of unbelieving humanity into which false teaching spreads.NEW. लोकः (lokaḥ). High risk. जगत् (jagat) is explicitly rejected: in strict Advaita cosmology the jagat is characterized as mithyā (ultimately unreal/illusory), a metaphysical claim that would badly undercut the moral seriousness of “deceivers have gone out into the world” — this is not commentary on the world’s ultimate ontological status but a statement about real, consequential human activity. लोकः avoids the illusion-doctrine association, though it must be flagged that लोक is itself a live cosmological category (the Purāṇic fourteen lokas) requiring context to fix its sense as “human society,” not a specific cosmic plane.
confessὁμολογοῦντες (ὁμολογέω)homologountes (homologeō)to say the same thing, to acknowledge/agreePublic, authoritative acknowledgment of a truth-claimconfess / acknowledge / admitPublic affirmation of Christ’s real incarnation — the same verb Paul uses in Romans 10:9 for confessing “Jesus is Lord.”NEW — CRITICAL. अङ्गीकरोति/अङ्गीकरणम् (aṅgīkaroti/aṅgīkaraṇam). This is the same Greek verb (ὁμολογέω) rendered in the baseline package only as embedded in the fixed Romans 10:9 formula (यीशुः प्रभुः अस्ति) rather than isolated as its own translation-memory entry. This package now establishes अङ्गीकरणम् as the standing Sanskrit equivalent for the verb itself, to be used consistently wherever ὁμολογέω recurs across the Johannine corpus. Because the confession content here concerns Christ’s Incarnation (already a Critical-risk doctrine), this term inherits Critical status: it must convey binding, public, authoritative acknowledgment, not private opinion or intellectual assent alone.
Jesus ChristἸησοῦν ΧριστὸνIēsoun ChristonProper name + titleJesus ChristThe unique historical/divine person confessed or denied.REUSED. यीशुः (Jesus, baseline) + ख्रीष्टः (Christ, per the established transliteration standard in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md). Critical.
coming in the fleshἐρχόμενον ἐν σαρκίerchomenon en sarkicoming/having come in fleshReal, physical human embodiment, as opposed to an apparent or spiritual-only appearance (anti-Docetic)come in the flesh / coming in human flesh / having come as a human beingThe Incarnation doctrine’s positive content: the eternal Son genuinely, permanently took on a real human body. Denial of this is the specific heresy (proto-Docetism/Gnosticism) 2 John opposes.REUSED from baseline incarnation entry. देहधारणम् (dehadhāraṇam). Critical — never अवतारः. Every occurrence must carry or reference the mandatory Bhagavad Gītā 4.7–8 contrast note per the baseline’s incarnation rule: this is a unique, permanent, once-for-all assumption of a real human body, categorically unlike a periodic, repeatable divine descent. This verse additionally activates the baseline’s humanity_of_christ doctrine entry: the flesh assumed is real, not an illusory or apparent body (guarding against a māyā-influenced reading in the opposite direction from avatāra — i.e., not only “not repeatable” but also “not merely apparent”).
antichristὁ ἀντίχριστοςho antichristosthe one against/instead-of ChristA specific eschatological opponent of Christ; by extension, anyone who denies Christ’s true identityantichrist / the AntichristThe false teacher described is characterized as embodying this opposition-to-Christ role.NEW — CRITICAL. ख्रीष्टविरोधी (khrīṣṭavirodhī, “Christ’s opponent”), with अन्तीख्रीष्टः (antīkhrīṣṭaḥ) retained as an acceptable parallel transliteration for cross-reference with future Johannine-corpus curricula (1 John 2:18, 22; 4:3; Revelation). Must convey a specific, personal opponent of the one true Christ — not a generic “evil figure,” and not one of several rival avatāra or deity claimants within a pluralistic frame.

Verse 8

“Watch yourselves, so that you may not lose what we have worked for, but may win a full reward.”

watch yourselvesβλέπετε ἑαυτούςblepete heautoussee/look at yourselvesBe on guard, exercise vigilancewatch yourselves / take heed / be on your guardVigilance against doctrinal compromise.NEW. सावधानाः भवत (sāvadhānāḥ bhavata). Low risk. Plain exhortation.
what we have worked forἃ εἰργασάμεθα (ἐργάζομαι)ha eirgasametha (ergazomai)what we labored/toiled atEffort, labor, ministry investmentworked for / labored for / accomplishedThe apostolic missionary labor invested in these believers’ growth.NEW — HIGH. परिश्रमः (pariśramaḥ). कर्म must never be used here. Because this term is directly paired in the same sentence with “reward” (μισθός, below), the pairing sits precisely on the grace-versus-works fault line the baseline package guards so carefully elsewhere (see baseline grace entry). Rendering “worked for” with कर्म risks implying that meritorious karma automatically yields its phala (reward) — exactly the karma-mīmāṃsā causal structure the whole Romans package works to keep clear of grace and reward language. परिश्रमः (toil/exertion) names effort without invoking that causal doctrine.
rewardμισθὸν πλήρη (μισθός)mision plērē (misthos)wage, pay, recompensePayment for labor; eschatological recompense from Godreward / wages / recompenseThe full, personally-given eschatological reward God grants for faithful gospel labor — not an automatic mechanical entitlement.NEW — HIGH. कर्मफलम् is explicitly rejected, for the same reason the baseline providence entry rejects it: कर्मफलम् names the automatic, impersonal fruit of action within the karma-mīmāṃsā causal system, not a reward personally granted by a relational God in response to faithful, grace-enabled labor.

Verse 9

“Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.”

goes on aheadπροάγων (προάγω)proagōn (proagō)goes before/beyondProgressive innovation beyond received doctrine (used pejoratively here)goes ahead / goes beyond / progresses beyondFalse “progress” that abandons apostolic doctrine rather than developing it faithfully.NEW. अतिक्रमति (atikramati, “transgresses/goes beyond”). Low-Medium risk. Plain verb; the theological point is carried by contrast with “abide,” not by this word alone.
abideμένων (μένω)menōn (menō)to remain, stay, continueContinuing steadfastly in a state or relationship over timeabide / remain / continuePersevering fidelity to apostolic doctrine about Christ — the core content of the curriculum’s Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ doctrine.NEW. Medium risk. May faintly echo Yoga’s sthiti (the steady, unwavering state praised in, e.g., the sthitaprajña of Bhagavad Gītā 2.55–72) — here a broadly helpful resonance (steadfastness is a shared value) rather than a collision, but must be anchored relationally: abiding in the teaching of Christ, not a self-achieved meditative equilibrium independent of any content.
teaching of Christτῇ διδαχῇ τοῦ Χριστοῦ (διδαχή)tē didachē tou Christou (didachē)the instruction/doctrine of ChristThe body of authoritative apostolic doctrine concerning Christ’s person and workteaching / doctrine / instruction of ChristThe fixed, apostolic body of teaching about who Christ is (directly tied to v.7’s incarnation confession) — this curriculum’s central doctrinal category.NEW — HIGH. उपदेश is retained over शिक्षा (rejected: शिक्षा is technically one of the six Vedāṅgas, the auxiliary science of Vedic phonetics/pronunciation, an unrelated technical category) and शास्त्रम् (rejected: too tied to the dharmaśāstra legal-ritual genre, per the baseline law entry’s reasoning). उपदेश itself, however, carries the strong association of a guru’s personal instruction to a disciple within a guru-śiṣya-paramparā — precisely the lineage-transmission model the baseline package rejected for “apostle” (गुरुः). Every occurrence must therefore be glossed: this is a fixed, once-given apostolic doctrine about Christ, received and guarded, not an evolving personal instruction varying by guru or lineage.
God / the Father / the Sonθεὸν / τὸν πατέρα / τὸν υἱὸνtheon / ton patera / ton huionGod / the Father / the SonDenying Christ’s true doctrine severs relationship with the whole Godhead — Father and Son together.REUSED. (Son) — all baseline terms. Critical.

Verse 10

“If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting.”

This is the curriculum’s Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment doctrine.House: NEW, गृहम् (gṛham), Low risk, plain word. Receive: NEW — MEDIUM, reusing the स्वीकरणम् root already fixed in the baseline adoption entry (पुत्रत्वेन स्वीकरणम्): गृहे स्वीकरणम् / गृहे न स्वीकुर्यात्. Because स्वीकरणम् already carries doctrinal weight in this package’s family of terms (adoption, confession), context must make clear this occurrence names doctrinal endorsement-through-hospitality, not the unrelated legal-adoption sense.
give … any greetingχαίρειν αὐτῷ μὴ λέγετε (χαίρειν)chairein autō mē legetedo not say “rejoice/hail” to himThe standard formal salutation (from χαίρω, “rejoice”), functioning here as a technical marker of endorsement/blessing extended to a teachergive a greeting / say a greeting / wish him wellFormal salutation of a traveling teacher publicly signaled communal endorsement; withholding it is a deliberate, visible act of doctrinal non-endorsement, not mere rudeness.NEW — MEDIUM-HIGH. अभिवादनम् (abhivādanam). This term requires unusual care: classical dharmaśāstra literature (e.g. Manusmṛti 2.120–125) prescribes abhivādana as formal, hierarchically-structured etiquette — a junior person’s ritualized respectful salutation of an elder, teacher, or Brahmin, often including reciting one’s own name and lineage. Using this term risks importing that social-hierarchy etiquette system, making the verse sound like a breach of proper varṇa-conscious manners rather than what it actually is: a deliberate withholding of doctrinal legitimation from a false teacher. Must be explicitly taught in context as an act of discernment, not an etiquette violation.

Verse 11

“For whoever grants him a greeting takes part in his evil works.”

Reuses the baseline fellowship root Must be explicitly flagged that the baseline’s “fellowship” doctrine describes positive shared participation in Christ and the believing community; this verse repurposes the same root for negative complicity. The word-family itself carries no moral valence — only context supplies it — so translator notes must make the ironic/negative sense unmistakable to avoid readers importing the positive “Christian fellowship” association from elsewhere in the curriculum.
evil worksτοῖς ἔργοις … τοῖς πονηροῖςtois ergois … tois ponērois(his) wicked/evil deedsMorally evaluated actions flowing from false doctrineevil deeds / wicked worksThe doctrinal error of v.7–9 issues in concrete, morally culpable action.NEW — MEDIUM. पापकर्माणि (pāpakarmāṇi), combining the baseline sin term (पापम्) with कर्म (“deed,” in the ordinary non-technical sense of “act,” not the full karma-phala causal doctrine). Lower risk than the परallel term in v.8 (see note there) because it is not paired with “reward” language and so does not sit directly on the grace/merit fault line — but translators should remain alert to कर्म’s doctrinal loading throughout this book given v.8’s more acute instance.

PART B — Remainder of the Book (2 John 1:1–3, 12–13)

Since 2 John consists of a single chapter, this section completes full-book coverage by treating the verses outside the core passage with the same rigor.

Verses 1–3 (Greeting)

Medium risk. Deliberately avoids गुरुः (guru-lineage authority, already rejected in the baseline apostle entry) and ऋषिः (Vedic seer, rejected for both apostle and prophet in the baseline). प्राचीनः names seniority without importing either system, though context must establish this as a functional church-office title, not mere old age.

Medium risk. वृता shares the root वृ with the baseline election term (परमेश्वरस्य वरणम्), preserving continuity with the package’s existing election vocabulary. देवी (“goddess”) and स्वामिनी (which in Śākta contexts can carry divine-consort/sovereign-mistress connotations) are explicitly rejected. The proper-name ambiguity (Electa/Kyria) should be flagged in any translator note as an open exegetical question, not silently resolved.

This is precisely the term the baseline grace entry lists among its rejected alternatives for grace — but “mercy” (ἔλεος) is a genuinely distinct theological category from “grace” (χάρις): mercy is compassion shown toward the miserable/undeserving, distinct from grace’s sense of unmerited favor establishing standing. कृपा is appropriate for this distinct slot but every occurrence must carry a note distinguishing it sharply from अनुग्रहः so translators never treat the two as interchangeable, especially since v.3 places them side by side.

Low risk in this ordinary-usage context — contrast with the Medium-High-risk χαίρειν of vv.10–11, where the same general semantic domain (formal greeting) becomes doctrinally loaded specifically because it functions there as public endorsement.

Chapter summary: 2 John, being a single chapter, has now been fully analyzed verse-by-verse. No verse or clause has been skipped; the whole book has received the treatment the PRD requires of “every chapter first to last.”
