Semantic Analysis
Semantic Analysis — 1 Peter (Full Book) — English → Gujarati
Methodology
This analysis covers the entire Greek text of 1 Peter, chapter 1 through chapter 5. The core passage (1 Peter 1:3–9) receives verse-by-verse treatment of every load-bearing term. Every remaining chapter receives a chapter-level section treating its load-bearing theological vocabulary with the same fields. Where a term already carries an established rendering in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json, that rendering is reused exactly and marked [TM REUSE]; no alternative is proposed. New terms required by 1 Peter’s distinct doctrinal content are proposed here for the first time and marked [NEW], with a risk tier assigned using the same Critical/High/Medium/Low framework as the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json.
Each term entry provides: Greek word (transliteration) — literal meaning; semantic range; common English variants; contextual theological meaning in 1 Peter; → proposed/reused Gujarati rendering (transliteration); Risk tier with grounded reasoning, especially regarding collision with Gujarat’s Vaishnav bhakti devotionalism, Jain doctrine (karma, ahimsa, the jīva/ajīva soul distinction, ascetic self-effort), and Shakti/goddess devotionalism, per the baseline’s established risk pattern.
Doctrine tags reference the eight curriculum doctrines: LHR (Living Hope of the Resurrection), SRS (Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake), HRP (Church as Holy and Royal Priesthood), SACE (Submission to Authority and Christlike Endurance), CSS (Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering), HIC (Holiness in Conduct), EH (Elders and Humility), CPS (Christ’s Proclamation to the Spirits) — plus baseline-shared doctrines (Grace, Faith, Salvation, etc.) carried over from Romans.
Book citation format follows baseline convention: 1 પિતરનો પત્ર (1 Peter’s Letter), verse numbers in Arabic numerals.
CORE PASSAGE: 1 પિતરનો પત્ર 1:3–9 (1 Peter 1:3–9)
- εὐλογητός (eulogētos) — “well-spoken-of, blessed.” Semantic range: praise-worthy, deserving benediction. English variants: “blessed.” Contextual meaning: doxological opening formula praising God the Father as the one who has acted. → આશીર્વાદિત / સ્તુત્ય (āśīrvādit / stutya, “blessed/praiseworthy”). Risk: Low. Standard doxological vocabulary; no doctrinal collision.
- Θεὸς καὶ πατήρ (Theos kai patēr) — “God and Father.” → પરમેશ્વર અને પિતા [TM REUSE: પરમેશ્વર, પિતા]. Risk: Critical (reuse of baseline term — see baseline notes on ભગવાન avoidance).
- Κύριος (Kyrios) — “Lord.” → પ્રભુ [TM REUSE]. Risk: Critical (reuse — exclusive, presently reigning Lord, not one lord among many; see baseline Lordship note).
- ἔλεος (eleos) — literal: “mercy, compassion shown toward one in distress.” Semantic range: pity, compassionate kindness, especially from a superior to an inferior. English variants: “mercy,” “compassion.” Contextual meaning: the motivating cause of the new birth — God’s own compassion, not human merit. → [NEW] દયા (dayā). Risk: Medium. દયા is a shared ethical virtue-word across Hindu and Jain moral vocabulary (karuna/dayā as a cardinal virtue), so the term itself is not exotic, but every occurrence must keep God as the personal, initiating subject of ἔλεος — not an abstract virtue a soul cultivates for itself.
- ἀναγεννήσας (anagennēsas) — literal: “having caused to be born again / having begotten again.” Semantic range: regeneration, spiritual re-birth, a new origin of life. English variants: “caused us to be born again,” “given us new birth,” “regenerated.” Contextual meaning: the foundational act of the Living Hope doctrine — God himself begets a wholly new life in the believer through Christ’s resurrection. → [NEW] નવો જન્મ આપ્યો / નવો જન્મ આપનાર (navo janma āpyo / navo janma āpanār — “gave/gives a new birth”). Risk: CRITICAL. This is the single highest-risk term newly introduced by 1 Peter. It must NEVER be rendered with the single Sanskrit-origin compound પુનર્જન્મ (already forbidden in the baseline for “resurrection,” naming Hindu rebirth and Jain karma-driven soul transmigration). The two-word periphrastic નવો જન્મ (kept deliberately distinct from the one-word technical compound) must be used, and every occurrence should make explicit that this new birth is a one-time, God-initiated, resurrection-grounded event — not another turn of an impersonal cycle the soul re-enters based on its own karmic residue. This term anchors the doctrine of the Living Hope of the Resurrection and must be taught alongside, and clearly distinguished from, પુનરુત્થાન (resurrection) itself.
- ἐλπὶς ζῶσα (elpis zōsa) — literal: “living hope.” Semantic range: confident expectation grounded in a completed, reliable act, as opposed to wishful desire. English variants: “living hope,” “a hope that is alive.” Contextual meaning: the thesis term of the core passage and the entire doctrine of “The Living Hope of the Resurrection” — hope that is alive because it is grounded in Christ’s own resurrection, not a hope contingent on the believer’s future spiritual attainment. → [NEW] જીવંત આશા (jīvant āśā). Risk: High. In both the Vaishnav bhakti and Jain frameworks common in Gujarat, ultimate hope is the soul’s own eventual liberation (moksha/kevalajñāna) reached across an uncertain span of lifetimes; here hope is already alive and secured by a past historical event (the resurrection), guaranteeing a certain future, not an aspiration toward self-attained release.
- ἀνάστασις…ἐκ νεκρῶν (anastasis…ek nekrōn) — “resurrection…from the dead.” → પુનરુત્થાન [TM REUSE — CRITICAL, never પુનર્જન્મ]. This is the ground of the living hope; risk reasoning as recorded in baseline.
Verse 4 — εἰς κληρονομίαν ἄφθαρτον καὶ ἀμίαντον καὶ ἀμάραντον, τετηρημένην ἐν οὐρανοῖς εἰς ὑμᾶς
- κληρονομία (klēronomia) — literal: “inheritance, allotted portion.” Semantic range: property received by right of heirship, not by purchase or achievement. English variants: “inheritance.” Contextual meaning: the believer’s certain future possession, secured by adoption into God’s family. → [NEW] વારસો (vārso). Risk: High. Must be taught alongside the baseline’s adoption doctrine (દત્તકપણું — full son-status with inheritance rights) so that વારસો is understood as granted by grace through sonship, not accumulated merit (પુણ્ય) or the fruit of one’s own karmic ledger.
- ἄφθαρτος (aphthartos) — literal: “not subject to decay, incorruptible.” Semantic range: imperishable, permanent, immune to decomposition. English variants: “imperishable,” “incorruptible,” “that fadeth not away” (KJV, of a related word). Contextual meaning: the inheritance cannot decay the way earthly possessions do. → [NEW] અવિનાશી (avinaśī). Risk: High. અવિનાશી is the standard Gujarati/Sanskrit epithet applied in the Bhagavad Gita and broader Hindu philosophy to the eternal, indestructible ātman (“the soul is avinaśī”). The translator must anchor this term explicitly to the inheritance God gives — a promised future possession — not to any inherent, self-existing imperishable quality of the human soul itself, which would collapse into Hindu soul-ontology.
- ἀμίαντος (amiantos) — “undefiled, unstained.” → [NEW] નિષ્કલંક (niṣkalank). Risk: Low-Medium. Standard moral-purity vocabulary; low collision risk on its own.
- ἀμάραντος (amarantos) — literal: “unfading” (root of English “amaranth,” a flower legendarily never withering). Semantic range: not fading, not losing luster or value over time. English variants: “unfading,” “that will not fade away.” Contextual meaning: permanence of the future inheritance’s worth. → [NEW] કદી ન કરમાય તેવો (kadī na karamāya tevo, “that never withers” — a descriptive phrase). Risk: Medium-High. The single-word alternative અક્ષય (akṣay) was considered and rejected: અક્ષય is the term used in Hindu ritual life (e.g., the festival Akshaya Tritiya) for merit or gain that never diminishes, i.e., an accumulated ritual/karmic asset — precisely the wrong frame for a gift received, not earned.
- τετηρημένην ἐν οὐρανοῖς (tetērēmenēn en ouranois) — “reserved/kept in the heavens.” → સ્વર્ગોમાં રાખેલો/સંભાળેલો (svargomā rākhelo/sambhāḷelo). Risk: Low. Straightforward.
- δύναμις Θεοῦ (dynamis Theou) — “power of God.” → પરમેશ્વરનું સામર્થ્ય [TM REUSE — High; never શક્તિ, per baseline’s Shakti/Ambaji note].
- φρουρουμένους (phrouroumenous) — literal: “being garrisoned/guarded” (military term for a guard posted around a city). Semantic range: protective custody, watchful safekeeping. English variants: “guarded,” “kept,” “protected.” Contextual meaning: believers are actively, continuously kept safe by God’s power until the inheritance is revealed. → [NEW] સુરક્ષિત રખાયેલા (surakṣit rakhāyelā). Risk: Medium. Reinforces assurance_of_salvation doctrine (already High risk in baseline): safekeeping rests in God’s ongoing action, not in the fluctuating, self-monitored karmic ledger of Hindu/Jain thought.
- πίστις (pistis) — “faith.” → વિશ્વાસ [TM REUSE — High].
- σωτηρία (sōtēria) — “salvation.” → ઉદ્ધાર [TM REUSE — Critical; never મોક્ષ/મુક્તિ/કેવલજ્ઞાન/સિદ્ધત્વ].
- ἀποκαλυφθῆναι (apokalyphthēnai) — literal: “to be unveiled, uncovered.” Semantic range: disclosure of what already exists but is presently hidden. English variants: “to be revealed.” Contextual meaning: salvation is already secured, awaiting a future, one-time unveiling — not a state gradually self-attained. → [NEW] પ્રગટ થવું (pragaṭ thavũ). Risk: Medium. Related noun ἀποκάλυψις is treated at v.7 below.
- καιρῷ ἐσχάτῳ (kairō eschatō) — “the last time.” → અંતિમ સમય (antim samay). Risk: Medium. Linear, one-time historical culmination, not a phase within a beginningless-endless cosmic cycle (cf. baseline’s fulfillment_of_prophecy doctrine note on Hindu yuga/Jain cosmology).
Verse 6 — ἐν ᾧ ἀγαλλιᾶσθε, ὀλίγον ἄρτι εἰ δέον ἐστὶν λυπηθέντες ἐν ποικίλοις πειρασμοῖς
- ἀγαλλιᾶσθε (agalliasthe) — literal: “you exult, leap for joy.” Semantic range: intense, exuberant rejoicing, stronger than ordinary χαρά. English variants: “you greatly rejoice,” “you exult.” Contextual meaning: present, continuous rejoicing despite present trial. → [NEW] અતિ આનંદ કરો છો (ati ānand karo cho). Risk: Low.
- λυπηθέντες (lypēthentes) — “having been grieved.” → [NEW] દુઃખી થયેલા (duḥkhī thayelā). Risk: Medium (see πειρασμός below for fuller doctrinal note).
- ποικίλοις πειρασμοῖς (poikilois peirasmois) — literal: “various/many-colored trials.” Semantic range: tests, trials, temptations of differing kinds — external hardship, not primarily internal moral temptation here. English variants: “various trials,” “diverse temptations.” Contextual meaning: the occasion for the testing of genuine faith (v.7) — foundational to the Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake doctrine developed through the rest of the book. → [NEW] વિવિધ પ્રકારની કસોટીઓ / પરીક્ષણો (vividh prakārnī kasoṭīo / parīkṣaṇo). Risk: High. કસોટી (“touchstone-test,” used of assaying metal) is the recommended primary rendering because it keeps the gold/fire metaphor of v.7 intact and avoids the fatalistic overtone that a trial is simply the automatic unfolding of one’s karmic account; the trial here is superintended by a personal God for a purposeful end (cf. baseline’s providence doctrine, પરમેશ્વરનું વિધાન).
- δοκίμιον τῆς πίστεως (dokimion tēs pisteōs) — literal: “the tested genuineness of faith” (δοκίμιον = the proven, approved result of a test, as of assayed metal). Semantic range: the certified, refined authenticity of something after testing. English variants: “the testing/genuineness/proof of your faith.” Contextual meaning: trials do not create faith but refine and certify it as authentic, valuable beyond perishable gold. → [NEW] તમારા વિશ્વાસની પરખ (tamārā viśvāsnī parakh — પરખ = “assay, discerning test,” a natural pairing with the gold/fire metaphor). Risk: Medium-High. Must be kept distinct from a Jain-style self-produced spiritual attainment; the “proof” is God-superintended refinement of a gift already given (વિશ્વાસ), not evidence of self-generated merit.
- χρυσίον (chrysion) — “gold.” Low risk, literal.
- δοκιμαζομένου (dokimazomenou) — “being tested/proved (by fire).” Same note as δοκίμιον above.
- ἔπαινος, τιμή (epainos, timē) — “praise,” “honor.” → પ્રશંસા, માન/સન્માન (praśansā, mān/sanmān). Risk: Low.
- δόξα (doxa) — “glory.” → મહિમા [TM REUSE — High; avoid light-only imagery per baseline note].
- ἀποκάλυψις Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ (apokalypsis Iēsou Christou) — literal: “the unveiling of Jesus Christ.” Semantic range: a decisive, future, one-time disclosure of a presently hidden but already-existing reality — distinct from repeated cyclical divine appearances. English variants: “the revelation/appearing of Jesus Christ.” Contextual meaning: Christ’s future glorious appearing, the terminus toward which the living hope points. → [NEW] ઈસુ ખ્રિસ્તનું પ્રગટીકરણ (Īsu Khristnũ pragaṭīkaraṇ). Risk: High. This single, climactic, future unveiling of the one Christ must not be read against the backdrop of repeated avatar-descents (already a Critical concern for incarnation in the baseline) nor as one of many cosmic-cycle events; it is the single consummation of the one gospel history.
- ἀγαπᾶτε (agapate) — literal: “you love.” Semantic range: self-giving, willed love directed at a specific object, distinguished in NT usage from erotic longing or mere affection. English variants: “you love.” Contextual meaning: the believers’ love for the unseen Christ, grounded in faith, not sight. → [NEW] પ્રેમ કરો છો (prem karo cho). Risk: Medium-High. Gujarat’s strong prem-bhakti devotional poetic tradition (Narsinh Mehta and others, already noted in baseline under “saints”) frequently frames love for a deity as passionate romantic longing (viraha) for an unseen beloved (e.g., Krishna-prem). ἀγαπάω love for Christ must be taught as trusting, obedient, self-giving love that flows from and responds to Christ’s own prior sacrificial love (cf. 2:24), not as devotional longing generated by the worshiper’s own emotional cultivation.
- πιστεύοντες (pisteuontes) — “believing.” → reuses વિશ્વાસ root: વિશ્વાસ કરો છો [TM REUSE-adjacent]. Risk: High (reuse).
- χαρᾷ ἀνεκλαλήτῳ καὶ δεδοξασμένῃ (chara aneklalētō kai dedoxasmenē) — literal: “with joy unspeakable/inexpressible and glorified/full of glory.” Semantic range: joy that exceeds articulation and is already suffused with eschatological glory. English variants: “joy inexpressible and full of glory.” → [NEW] અકથ્ય તથા મહિમાવંત આનંદ (akathya tathā mahimāvant ānand — reuses મહિમા). Risk: Low-Medium.
Verse 9 — κομιζόμενοι τὸ τέλος τῆς πίστεως ὑμῶν σωτηρίαν ψυχῶν
- κομιζόμενοι (komizomenoi) — literal: “obtaining, receiving for oneself.” Semantic range: to carry off/receive what is due or promised. English variants: “obtaining,” “receiving.” Contextual meaning: the present, ongoing reception of the outcome of faith. → [NEW] પ્રાપ્ત કરી રહ્યા છો (prāpt karī rahyā cho). Risk: Low.
- τέλος τῆς πίστεως (telos tēs pisteōs) — literal: “the end/goal/outcome of faith.” Semantic range: τέλος ranges from “termination” to “goal/completion/intended result.” English variants: “the outcome of your faith,” “the goal of your faith.” Contextual meaning: faith’s God-given, certain destination. → [NEW] વિશ્વાસનું પરિણામ (viśvāsnũ pariṇām). Risk: Medium-High. This is a context-sensitive term (compare 4:7 below, rendered અંત): here it must convey a single, certain, linear destination reached once, not a stage within an ongoing cycle of lifetimes.
- σωτηρίαν ψυχῶν (sōtērian psychōn) — “salvation of souls.” σωτηρία → ઉદ્ધાર [TM REUSE — Critical]. ψυχή (psychē) — literal: “soul, inner life, self.” Semantic range: the seat of a person’s life and identity, sometimes = “life” itself, sometimes the inner non-physical self. English variants: “soul,” “life,” “self.” Contextual meaning: the whole inner person, the object of God’s saving work. → [NEW] જીવ (jīv). Risk: High. જીવ is also the core technical term in Jain metaphysics for the individual soul-substance (jīva, as opposed to ajīva, non-soul matter) that transmigrates according to accumulated karma until self-achieved liberation. Every use of જીવ for ψυχή in 1 Peter must be anchored to God’s saving, once-for-all action upon the person (ઉદ્ધાર), never allowed to imply an autonomous soul-substance working out its own karmic liberation across lifetimes.
CHAPTER 1 (Remainder: vv. 1–2, 10–25)
- ἀπόστολος (apostolos) (1:1) — “apostle.” → પ્રેરિત [TM REUSE — Medium].
- ἐκλεκτός (eklektos) (1:1) — “chosen, elect.” → પસંદ કરેલા [TM REUSE root — from પરમેશ્વરની પસંદગી, election doctrine, High]. Contextual meaning here: the recipients themselves are termed “elect exiles,” combining the doctrines of election and diaspora-identity.
- παρεπίδημος (parepidēmos) (1:1; cf. 2:11) — literal: “a temporary resident/sojourner alongside.” Semantic range: a resident alien, one dwelling temporarily away from one’s true home. English variants: “sojourners,” “pilgrims,” “exiles,” “strangers.” Contextual meaning: believers’ present social identity — scattered, provisional residents whose true citizenship is heavenly. → [NEW] પરદેશી / યાત્રી (pardeśī / yātrī). Risk: Medium. Low doctrinal collision but socially loaded: must not be read as a call to withdraw into ascetic isolation (cf. Jain sannyāsa) but as ordinary engaged life lived with a different ultimate loyalty (echoes baseline’s separation_unto_gods_service doctrine).
- πρόγνωσις Θεοῦ πατρός (prognōsis Theou patros) (1:2) — literal: “foreknowledge of God the Father.” Semantic range: prior personal knowledge and determination, not mere prediction. English variants: “foreknowledge.” Contextual meaning: the Father’s sovereign prior choice underlying election. → [NEW] પરમેશ્વર પિતાનું પૂર્વજ્ઞાન (Parmeśvar Pitānũ pūrvajñān). Risk: High. Must be explicitly distinguished from the Jain doctrine of કેવલજ્ઞાન (kevalajñāna), the self-attained omniscience of a liberated soul (already a forbidden-adjacent term in the baseline salvation entry) — here it is the personal Father’s prior knowledge and choice regarding believers, not a soul’s own achieved omniscient state.
- ἁγιασμὸς Πνεύματος (hagiasmos Pneumatos) (1:2) — “sanctification of/by the Spirit.”
→ context-sensitive reuse of the baseline’s obedience root; where paired with faith use વિશ્વાસનું આજ્ઞાપાલન [TM REUSE]; standalone occurrences (e.g., 1:14 τέκνα ὑπακοῆς, “children of obedience,” a Hebraic idiom for “obedient children”) → [NEW] આજ્ઞાપાળક બાળકો (āgnāpāḷak bāḷako). Risk: Medium (idiom-handling; preserve theological meaning — identity defined by obedience, not ethnicity or caste — over literal idiom).
- ῥαντισμὸς αἵματος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ (rantismos haimatos Iēsou Christou) (1:2) — literal: “sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ.” Semantic range: alludes to the Sinai covenant-ratification rite (Exodus 24) where sprinkled blood sealed Israel’s covenant obedience. English variants: “sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ.” Contextual meaning: believers are brought into a Christ-ratified covenant through his atoning blood; requires OT covenant background (cf. baseline’s seed_of_david note on background dependency). → [NEW] ઈસુ ખ્રિસ્તના લોહીનું છંટકાવ (Īsu Khristnā lohīnũ chaṇṭkāv). Risk: High. Requires explicit teaching of the OT covenant-ratification background; also requires pastoral sensitivity given the strong Jain cultural aversion to blood/violence (ahimsa) — the image must be taught as a covenant-sealing/atoning act, not confused with any ritual blood-offering practice.
- χάρις, εἰρήνη (charis, eirēnē) (1:2) — “grace, peace.” → કૃપા, શાંતિ [TM REUSE — both Critical/High and Medium respectively].
- προφῆται (prophētai) (1:10) — “prophets.” → ભવિષ્યવક્તાઓ [TM REUSE — Low].
- πνεῦμα Χριστοῦ (pneuma Christou) (1:11) — “Spirit of Christ.” → ખ્રિસ્તનો આત્મા — reuses પવિત્ર આત્મા doctrinal frame. Risk: Critical (identifies the Spirit inspiring OT prophets as Christ’s own Spirit — a strong deity-of-Christ and Trinity marker; must not be softened to a generic “spirit of prophecy”).
- παθήματα εἰς Χριστόν / δόξαι (pathēmata eis Christon / doxai) (1:11) — “sufferings for/unto Christ, and glories [to follow].” Foundational statement of both the SRS and LHR doctrines: suffering precedes glory in a fixed, prophesied order. → ખ્રિસ્ત માટેનાં દુઃખો અને પછીનો મહિમા (see πάθημα/δόξα notes; reuse મહિમા [TM]; new [NEW] દુઃખ, see ch.2–4 for full risk discussion).
- εὐαγγελισαμένων (euangelisamenōn) (1:12) — “having preached the gospel.” → સુવાર્તા પ્રચાર કરનારા [TM REUSE: સુવાર્તા, Critical/High].
- ἄγγελοι ἐπιθυμοῦσιν παρακύψαι (angeloi epithymousin parakypsai) (1:12) — “angels desire to look into [these things].” → દૂતો ડોકિયું કરવા ઇચ્છે છે (dūto ḍokiyũ karavā icche che). Risk: Low.
- ἀναζωσάμενοι τὰς ὀσφύας τῆς διανοίας / νήφοντες (anazōsamenoi tas osphyas tēs dianoias / nēphontes) (1:13) — idiom: “having girded up the loins of your mind” / “being sober.” Idiomatic call to mental readiness and self-control for action. → natural Gujarati equivalent: મનને સજ્જ કરીને, સાવધ રહો (manne sajja karīne, sāvadh raho). Risk: Medium — see σωφρονέω/νήφω discussion at ch.4/5 for the fuller doctrinal note on avoiding સંયમ (Jain ascetic self-restraint vocabulary).
- τελείως ἐλπίσατε ἐπὶ τὴν φερομένην ὑμῖν χάριν (teleiōs elpisate epi tēn pheromenēn hymin charin) (1:13) — “hope fully/completely on the grace being brought to you.” Reuses જીવંત આશા family and કૃપા [TM]. Risk: High (grace-hope combination; reinforces that hope is fixed on a grace already in motion toward the believer, not a self-generated aspiration).
- ἅγιος / ἁγνίζοντες (hagios / hagnizontes) (1:15–16, quoting Leviticus 19:2; 1:22) — “holy” / “having purified.” ἅγιος → પવિત્ર [TM REUSE — High]. ἁγνίζω (hagnizō) — literal: “to purify, cleanse (ceremonially or morally).” Semantic range: ritual and moral purification. English variants: “purified,” “cleansed.” Contextual meaning (1:22): souls purified through obedience to the truth, resulting in sincere brotherly love. → [NEW] શુદ્ધ કરેલા (śuddha karelā). Risk: CRITICAL. The baseline already flags શુદ્ધ as leaning toward ritual or ascetic purity relevant to Jain purity practice; 1 Peter 1:22 places this exact risk at its sharpest point, since the purification is achieved “through obedience to the truth” (a phrase that, without careful framing, reads exactly like a merit-based, self-performed purification exercise akin to Jain tapa). Every occurrence must make explicit that the obedience is a Spirit-enabled response to gospel truth already received, not an ascetic technique generating one’s own purity.
- ἀναστροφή (anastrophē) (1:15, 18) — “conduct, way of life.” See extended treatment under Holiness in Conduct (ch. 2–3 below); introduced here in “be holy in all your conduct” and “your futile conduct inherited from your fathers.” → [NEW] વર્તન (vartan). Risk: High.
- λυτρόω / ἐλυτρώθητε (lytroō / elytrōthēte) (1:18) — literal: “to ransom/redeem by paying a price.” Semantic range: buying back a slave or captive at a cost. English variants: “redeemed,” “ransomed.” Contextual meaning: believers were bought out of their former futile way of life at the cost of Christ’s blood, not with money (silver/gold) or self-effort. → [NEW] છોડાવ્યા (chodāvyā, from છોડાવવું, “to secure release by paying a price”). Risk: CRITICAL. This is a distinct concept from ઉદ્ધાર (salvation, the resulting state) and must not be merged with it; deliberately avoid any root shared with મુક્તિ (the baseline’s forbidden “liberation” term for salvation) — છોડાવવું is chosen precisely because it carries no such root. The doctrinal point (Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering) is that a price was paid BY CHRIST, not accumulated or worked off by the redeemed person — the opposite of the Jain doctrine of shedding karmic matter through one’s own austerity (nirjarā, already forbidden for “grace” in the baseline).
- τίμιον αἷμα … ὡς ἀμνοῦ ἀμώμου καὶ ἀσπίλου (timion haima … hōs amnou amōmou kai aspilou) (1:19) — “precious blood … as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.” → [NEW] મૂલ્યવાન લોહી… નિર્દોષ અને નિષ્કલંક હલવાનનું (mūlyavān lohī… nirdoṣ ane niṣkalank halvānnũ). Risk: High. The sacrificial lamb typology requires OT Passover/Levitical background explanation (cf. baseline’s seed_of_david note pattern); also requires pastoral care given the strong ahimsa (non-violence) sensibility especially prominent among Gujarat’s Jain community, for whom animal sacrifice imagery is culturally jarring — the doctrinal point (a costly, willing, sinless substitute) must be taught clearly rather than softened.
- προεγνωσμένου πρὸ καταβολῆς κόσμου / φανερωθέντος ἐπ’ ἐσχάτου τῶν χρόνων (proegnōsmenou pro katabolēs kosmou / phanerōthentos ep’ eschatou tōn chronōn) (1:20) — “foreknown before the foundation of the world / manifested at the end of the times.” φανερόω (phaneroō) — literal: “to make visible, manifest.” Semantic range: bringing into open, visible reality something previously hidden. English variants: “manifested,” “revealed,” “appeared.” Contextual meaning: Christ’s historical appearing in the incarnation. → [NEW] પ્રગટ થયો (pragaṭ thayo). Risk: High. Distinct from but doctrinally adjacent to દેહધારણ [TM REUSE — Critical, incarnation]; φανερόω describes the visible appearing of the eternally-purposed Son and must be taught together with, never as a substitute for, દેહધારણ — and never assimilated to a repeatable avatar-descent (cf. baseline incarnation doctrine note on Dwarka/Vaishnav risk).
- πίστις καὶ ἐλπὶς εἰς Θεόν (pistis kai elpis eis Theon) (1:21) — “faith and hope in God.” Reuses વિશ્વાસ [TM] and જીવંત આશા family [NEW].
- φιλαδελφία ἀνυπόκριτος (philadelphia anypokritos) (1:22) — “unfeigned/sincere brotherly love.” → [NEW] નિષ્કપટ ભાઈચારાનો પ્રેમ (niṣkapaṭ bhāīchārāno prem). Risk: Medium. See ἀγάπη discussion above regarding prem-bhakti collision risk.
- ἀναγεννημένοι … οὐκ ἐκ σπορᾶς φθαρτῆς ἀλλὰ ἀφθάρτου, διὰ λόγου ζῶντος Θεοῦ (anagegennēmenoi … ouk ek sporas phthartēs alla aphthartou, dia logou zōntos Theou) (1:23) — “having been born again … not of perishable seed but imperishable, through the living word of God.” Reuses નવો જન્મ [NEW — CRITICAL] and અવિનાશી [NEW — High]. The “living and abiding word of God” — [NEW] પરમેશ્વરનું જીવંત તથા ટકી રહેનારું વચન (Parmeśvarnũ jīvant tathā ṭakī rahenārũ vachan). Risk: Medium. Ties the New Birth doctrine to the authority and permanence of Scripture (cf. baseline’s inspiration_of_scripture doctrine), quoting Isaiah 40:6–8 (grass withers, word endures) — reinforces linear, dependable revelation against any impersonal, cyclical account of ultimate truth.
CHAPTER 2
- κακία, δόλος, ὑπόκρισις, φθόνος, καταλαλιά (kakia, dolos, hypokrisis, phthonos, katalalia) (2:1) — vice list: “malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, slander.” Standard moral vocabulary with straightforward Gujarati equivalents (દુષ્ટતા, કપટ, દંભ, ઈર્ષ્યા, નિંદા); no unique doctrinal risk beyond ordinary vice terminology. Risk: Low.
- λογικὸν ἄδολον γάλα (logikon adolon gala) (2:2) — literal: “rational/word-related, unadulterated milk.” Semantic range: λογικός plays on λόγος (word) — spiritual nourishment tied to the word of God just introduced in 1:23. English variants: “pure spiritual milk,” “the pure milk of the word.” Contextual meaning: ongoing nourishment leading to growth into salvation. → [NEW] વચનનું શુદ્ધ આત્મિક દૂધ (vachannũ śuddha ātmik dūdh). Risk: Medium.
- λίθος ζῶν (lithos zōn) (2:4–5) — literal: “living stone.” Semantic range: a building-stone metaphor combined with “living” — paradoxical union of inert building material and life, applied first to Christ, then to believers built upon him. English variants: “living stone.” Contextual meaning: foundational metaphor for the Church as Holy and Royal Priesthood doctrine — Christ the rejected-yet-chosen cornerstone, believers built into a spiritual house upon him. → [NEW] જીવતો પથ્થર (jīvato patthar). Risk: Medium. The paradox is intentional and must be preserved; care should be taken that “living stone” is clearly read as christological/ecclesial metaphor and not absorbed into any folk-animist notion of stones possessing indwelling spirit (a minor but real risk in a culture with living local deity-stone traditions).
- λίθος ἀκρογωνιαῖος ἐκλεκτὸς ἔντιμος / λίθος προσκόμματος (lithos akrogōniaios eklektos entimos / lithos proskommatos) (2:6–8, quoting Isaiah 28:16 and Psalm 118:22) — “chosen, precious cornerstone” / “stone of stumbling.” → [NEW] પસંદ કરેલો મૂલ્યવાન ખૂણાનો પાયાનો પથ્થર / ઠોકર ખવડાવનાર પથ્થર (pasand karelo mūlyavān khūṇāno pāyāno patthar / ṭhokar khavḍāvnār patthar). Risk: Medium-High. Ties messianic prophecy fulfillment doctrine (already High/Critical in the baseline) to Christ’s rejection by unbelievers.
- οἶκος πνευματικός (oikos pneumatikos) (2:5) — “spiritual house.” → [NEW] આત્મિક ઘર (ātmik ghar). Risk: Low-Medium.
- ἱεράτευμα ἅγιον / βασίλειον ἱεράτευμα (hierateuma hagion / basileion hierateuma) (2:5, 9) — literal: “holy priesthood” / “royal priesthood.” Semantic range: ἱεράτευμα names the collective office and function of priests — mediating access to God and offering acceptable sacrifice; βασίλειον adds “royal, kingly” character, echoing Exodus 19:6 (“a kingdom of priests”). English variants: “holy priesthood,” “royal priesthood.” Contextual meaning: the anchor term of the doctrine of the Church as a Holy and Royal Priesthood — EVERY believer, not a specialized class, now has direct priestly access to God through Christ and offers spiritual sacrifices. → [NEW] પવિત્ર યાજકપણું / રાજવી યાજકપણું (pavitra yājakpaṇũ / rājvī yājakpaṇũ). Risk: CRITICAL. This doctrine must be translated with maximum clarity against two live cultural collisions: (1) the hereditary, caste-restricted Brahmin priesthood (પૂજારી/બ્રાહ્મણ) of popular Hindu temple religion, where priestly access to the divine is an inherited, birth-determined privilege; and (2) any notion of a spiritually elite ascetic class (parallel to Jain munis) mediating for ordinary believers. The doctrine is the deliberate opposite of both: universal, non-hereditary, non-caste priestly access granted to all who are in Christ — directly reinforcing the baseline’s universal_scope_of_gospel and unity_of_jews_and_gentiles doctrines (already Critical/High) in a context where caste remains socially significant.
- θυσίαι πνευματικαί (thysiai pneumatikai) (2:5) — literal: “spiritual sacrifices.” Semantic range: θυσία is the standard word for cultic/ritual sacrifice (animal or otherwise); πνευματικός marks these as non-material, Spirit-enabled offerings. English variants: “spiritual sacrifices.” Contextual meaning: praise, good deeds, and consecrated life offered through Christ, replacing the entire Levitical (and by cultural extension, any ritual) sacrificial system. → [NEW] આત્મિક બલિદાનો (ātmik balidāno). Risk: High. બલિદાન is the common Gujarati word for sacrifice/offering in both Hindu ritual (yajña) and general usage; must be explicitly qualified as “spiritual” throughout to prevent readers from supplying a material, ritual, or merit-generating offering (paralleling the Jain practice of austerity, tapa, as a self-performed offering that sheds karma).
- γένος ἐκλεκτόν / ἔθνος ἅγιον / λαὸς εἰς περιποίησιν (genos eklekton / ethnos hagion / laos eis peripoiēsin) (2:9) — “chosen race/generation” / “holy nation” / “a people for [God’s] own possession.” → [NEW] પસંદ કરેલી પ્રજા / પવિત્ર દેશજન / પોતાની ખાસ પ્રજા (pasand karelī prajā / pavitra deśjan / potānī khās prajā). Risk: High. Reinforces baseline’s election doctrine (પરમેશ્વરની પસંદગી); must be read as identity in Christ transcending ethnicity, caste, and community affiliation — not a new sociological/national in-group, given India’s ongoing sensitivity to communalism and caste-based identity politics.
- ἐκ σκότους εἰς τὸ θαυμαστὸν φῶς (ek skotous eis to thaumaston phōs) (2:9) — “out of darkness into marvelous light.” → અંધકારમાંથી પોતાના આશ્ચર્યકારક પ્રકાશમાં (andhakāramāṅthī potānā āścaryakārak prakāśmā). Risk: Medium. Light/darkness imagery is broadly shared across religious traditions in Gujarat (including Jain kevala-jñāna as “infinite light of omniscience,” flagged already for δόξα in the baseline); context should keep this tied to the specific historical calling out of a specific people, not generic spiritual illumination.
- ἀναστροφή … καλή ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν (anastrophē … kalē en tois ethnesin) (2:12) — “good conduct among the [pagan] nations/Gentiles.” Reuses વર્તન [NEW — High] and અન્ય પ્રજાઓ [TM REUSE — Medium]. Contextual note: here ἔθνη refers to unbelieving Gentile neighbors observing believers’ conduct, a slightly different referent than the Jew/Gentile theological pairing in Romans, but the same Gujarati term applies without contradiction.
- ὑποτάγητε πάσῃ ἀνθρωπίνῃ κτίσει (hypotagēte pasē anthrōpinē ktisei) (2:13) — literal: “submit yourselves to every human institution/creation.” ὑποτάσσω (hypotassō) — semantic range: to arrange under, to place oneself voluntarily under another’s authority (a military/household term, often in the middle/passive voice indicating willing self-placement, not coercion). English variants: “submit,” “be subject to.” Contextual meaning: the anchor verb of the Submission to Authority and Christlike Endurance doctrine — voluntary, Christ-modeled submission to civil, household, and ecclesial structures. → [NEW] આધીન થાઓ (ādhīn thāo). Risk: High. Must be taught as a free, gospel-motivated posture modeled on Christ’s own submission unto suffering (2:21–25), never as fatalistic acceptance of one’s caste-determined social station (a live risk in India, where submission-language can be misheard as endorsing the varna/jāti social hierarchy) nor as karma-determined resignation to one’s assigned lot.
- βασιλεύς, ἡγεμόνες (basileus, hēgemones) (2:13–14) — “king/emperor, governors.” → રાજા, અધિકારીઓ (rājā, adhikārīo). Risk: Low-Medium (governmental authority doctrine, cf. baseline’s flag on Romans 13 government segments for native-speaker review).
- ἐλευθερία (eleutheria) (2:16) — “freedom/liberty.” → [NEW] સ્વતંત્રતા (svatantratā). Risk: Medium. Must not be read as license (the text explicitly warns against using freedom as “a covering for evil”); nor should it be confused with Jain/Hindu concepts of spiritual “liberation” (avoid any rendering sharing root with મુક્તિ).
- δοῦλοι Θεοῦ (douloi Theou) (2:16) — “servants/slaves of God.” → પરમેશ્વરના દાસો (Parmeśvarnā dāso). Risk: Medium. True freedom is realized precisely in willing service to God, a paradox worth flagging for translator note.
- οἰκέται … δεσπόταις (oiketai … despotais) (2:18) — “household servants … masters.” → ઘરના નોકરો… શેઠો/માલિકો (gharnā nokaro… śeṭho/māliko). Risk: Medium (socially sensitive; flagged per baseline’s guidance for cultural-metaphor/authority segments requiring native-speaker review rather than theologian review alone, except where doctrine of Christlike endurance is directly taught, which raises it to High).
- χάρις (in the sense “this is commendable”) (2:19–20) — a distinct colloquial sense of χάρις (“credit, commendable thing”) rather than the theological sense of unmerited saving favor. → context-sensitive: render as યોગ્ય/પ્રશંસાપાત્ર (yogya/praśansāpātra, “fitting/praiseworthy”) rather than કૃપા here, to avoid implying that endurance of unjust suffering itself earns saving grace. Risk: High — a genuine ambiguity risk flagged for native-speaker/theologian review, since automatically defaulting to કૃપા (the TM-mandated theological sense) would wrongly suggest merit-earned favor in a passage about unjust suffering.
- πάσχειν ἀγαθοποιοῦντας / ὑποφέρει λύπας πάσχων ἀδίκως (paschein agathopoiountas / hypopherei lypas paschōn adikōs) (2:19–20) — “to suffer while doing good” / “bears up under sorrows, suffering unjustly.” Core statement of the Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake doctrine. See extended πάσχω/πάθημα note below (2:21, 23; 3:14, 17; 4:1, 13, 19).
- Χριστὸς ἔπαθεν ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν (Christos epathen hyper hymōn) (2:21) — literal: “Christ suffered on behalf of/for the sake of you.” ὑπέρ (hyper) — semantic range: “on behalf of, for the benefit of, in place of” — the preposition classically marking substitutionary or representative action. Contextual meaning: the foundational statement of Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering doctrine. → [NEW] ખ્રિસ્ત તમારે માટે દુઃખ સહ્યાં (Khrist tamāre māṭe duḥkha sahyā). Risk: CRITICAL. ὑπέρ’s substitutionary force must be preserved explicitly (Christ suffering IN THE PLACE OF / FOR THE BENEFIT OF believers), not merely “suffered alongside” or “suffered as an example” — though the passage also teaches Christ as ὑπογραμμός (“example/copy to trace,” see below), both senses must be held together without collapsing the substitutionary sense into mere exemplarism.
- ὑπογραμμόν (hypogrammon) (2:21) — literal: “a writing-copy to be traced by a student learning letters.” Semantic range: a pattern for exact imitation. English variants: “example,” “pattern.” → [NEW] અનુકરણ કરવા માટેનો નમૂનો (anukaraṇ karavā māṭeno namūno). Risk: Medium.
- ὃς ἁμαρτίαν οὐκ ἐποίησεν (hos hamartian ouk epoiēsen) (2:22, quoting Isaiah 53:9) — “who committed no sin.” Reuses પાપ [TM REUSE — High]. Christ’s sinlessness is the necessary premise for a valid substitutionary sacrifice.
- παρεδίδου τῷ κρίνοντι δικαίως (paredidou tō krinonti dikaiōs) (2:23) — “committed himself to him who judges righteously.” Reuses ન્યાય root [High]. → ન્યાયથી ન્યાય કરનારને સોંપી દીધા (nyāyathī nyāya karnārne sompī dīdhā).
- τὰς ἁμαρτίας ἡμῶν αὐτὸς ἀνήνεγκεν ἐν τῷ σώματι αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τὸ ξύλον (tas hamartias hēmōn autos anēnegken en tō sōmati autou epi to xylon) (2:24) — literal: “he himself carried up/bore our sins in his body onto the tree/wood.” ἀναφέρω (anapherō) — semantic range: a technical sacrificial term for carrying a victim/offering up to the altar. English variants: “bore,” “carried.” ξύλον (xylon) — “tree, wood” — a common NT circumlocution for the cross, evoking Deuteronomy 21:23. Contextual meaning: the heart of the Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering doctrine — Christ bore the guilt of our sins as a sacrificial offering, in his own body, at the cross. → [NEW] આપણાં પાપ પોતાના શરીરમાં વૃક્ષ (ક્રૂસ) પર ઊંચકી લીધાં (āpaṇā pāp potānā śarīrmā vṛkṣa (krūs) par ūnchkī līdhā). Risk: CRITICAL. Must preserve the sacrificial, substitutionary, one-time, bodily character of this act; must not be flattened into a merely instructive “example of noble suffering,” nor read through any framework in which one’s own sin/karma must ultimately be personally exhausted by the sinner rather than borne by another.
- ἵνα … τῇ δικαιοσύνῃ ζήσωμεν (hina … tē dikaiosynē zēsōmen) (2:24) — “that we might live to righteousness.” Reuses ન્યાયીપણું [TM REUSE — Critical].
- οὗ τῷ μώλωπι ἰάθητε (hou tō mōlōpi iathēte) (2:24, quoting Isaiah 53:5) — “by whose wound you were healed.” ἰάομαι (iaomai) — “to heal.” → [NEW] જેમના ઘાથી તમે સાજા થયા (jemnā ghāthī tame sājā thayā). Risk: Medium. The healing in view is spiritual restoration through the atonement, not primarily physical healing — a distinction worth a translator note given the prominence of faith-healing expectation in some popular Gujarati Christian contexts.
- πλανώμενοι ὡς πρόβατα … ἐπὶ τὸν ποιμένα καὶ ἐπίσκοπον τῶν ψυχῶν ὑμῶν (planōmenoi hōs probata … epi ton poimena kai episkopon tōn psychōn hymōn) (2:25) — “going astray like sheep … to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.” ποιμήν (poimēn) — “shepherd.” ἐπίσκοπος (episkopos) — literal “overseer, one who watches over.” → [NEW] ઘેટાંપાળક અને દેખરેખ રાખનાર (gheṭāṅpāḷak ane dekhrekh rākhnār). Risk: High. Sets up the Elders and Humility doctrine’s key metaphor (developed fully in 5:1–4, where elders serve as under-shepherds of this Chief Shepherd). Specific cultural risk: Gujarat’s Vaishnav devotional culture, centered on Dwarka, celebrates Krishna precisely as a cowherd/shepherd-boy (gopāla/govinda) tending cattle — a beloved, highly salient devotional image. Christ-as-Shepherd risks being assimilated into this familiar Krishna-gopāla frame unless the passage’s specific content (substitutionary suffering, sin-bearing, restoring straying sheep to a specific historical Overseer) is kept sharply in view rather than allowed to float as generic pastoral-deity imagery.
CHAPTER 3
- γυναῖκες ὑποτασσόμεναι τοῖς ἀνδράσιν (gynaikes hypotassomenai tois andrasin) (3:1) — “wives submitting to husbands.” Reuses આધીન [High — see 2:13 note]. Household application of the Submission to Authority and Christlike Endurance doctrine.
- ἀναστροφή … ἁγνὴ (anastrophē … hagnē) (3:1–2) — “conduct … chaste/pure.” Reuses વર્તન [High] + પવિત્ર/શુદ્ધ family. Risk: High (as previously noted, especially regarding શુদ્ધ).
- τὸ ἄφθαρτον τοῦ πραέως καὶ ἡσυχίου πνεύματος (to aphtharton tou praeōs kai hēsychiou pneumatos) (3:4) — “the imperishable [quality/adornment] of a gentle and quiet spirit.” πραΰς (praus) — “gentle, meek.” ἡσύχιος (hēsychios) — “quiet, tranquil.” → [NEW] સૌમ્ય તથા શાંત મનનું અવિનાશી આભૂષણ (saumya tathā śānt mannũ avinaśī ābhūṣaṇ). Risk: Medium-High (reuses અવિનાશી, see High-risk note at 1:4; also gender-language handling sensitivity per baseline’s tone requirements — must not be taught as a universal female virtue requirement divorced from the wider mutual-humility ethic taught for all believers, cf. 3:8, 5:5).
- Σάρρα … κύριον αὐτὸν καλοῦσα (Sarra … kyrion auton kalousa) (3:6) — “Sarah … calling him [Abraham] lord.” Contextual note: κύριος is here used of a human husband, a purely social honorific — NOT the theological title reserved elsewhere for Christ. → render with a lower-case, non-theological Gujarati honorific such as સ્વામી (svāmī, “master/lord” in a household sense) rather than પ્રભુ, to avoid implying Abraham is given the same title reserved for Christ’s exclusive Lordship. Risk: High — a genuine translation-choice flag: baseline reserves પ્રભુ exclusively for Christ’s unique Lordship and even rejects સ્વામી as an alternative for that specific theological term; here, however, the source text itself uses the same Greek word (κύριος) in a deliberately lower, social register, so the Gujarati rendering must diverge from પ્રભુ specifically to preserve, not blur, the baseline’s careful reservation of પ્રભુ for Christ alone.
- συγκληρονόμοι χάριτος ζωῆς (synklēronomoi charitos zōēs) (3:7) — “fellow heirs of the grace of life.” → [NEW] જીવનની કૃપાના સહવારસ (jīvannī kṛpānā sahvāras). Risk: Medium (reuses કૃપા [Critical] and વારસો family [High]).
- ὁμόφρονες, συμπαθεῖς, φιλάδελφοι, εὔσπλαγχνοι, ταπεινόφρονες (homophrones, sympatheis, philadelphoi, eusplagchnoi, tapeinophrones) (3:8) — “of one mind, sympathetic, loving as brothers, tenderhearted, humble-minded.” ταπεινόφρων (tapeinophrōn) is the key term here anticipating the full Elders and Humility doctrine developed in ch.5. → [NEW] નમ્ર મનના (namra mannā), part of the નમ્રતા family [High — see ch.5].
- μὴ ἀποδιδόντες κακὸν ἀντὶ κακοῦ … εὐλογοῦντες (mē apodidontes kakon anti kakou … eulogountes) (3:9) — “not repaying evil for evil … but blessing.” Reuses calling doctrine (εἰς τοῦτο ἐκλήθητε, “you were called to this”) [TM REUSE — High].
- πάσχοιτε διὰ δικαιοσύνην, μακάριοι (paschoite dia dikaiosynēn, makarioi) (3:14) — literal: “should you suffer for the sake of righteousness, [you are] blessed.” This is the single most explicit statement in 1 Peter of the Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake doctrine by name. δικαιοσύνη → ન્યાયીપણું [TM REUSE — Critical]. πάσχω/πάθημα → [NEW] દુઃખ સહવું / દુઃખ (duḥkha sahavũ / duḥkha). Risk: CRITICAL for this doctrine specifically. Gujarati દુઃખ is the ordinary, unavoidable word for suffering/pain and is also the first and most basic technical term of the shared Hindu-Jain-Buddhist analysis of existence (duḥkha as the fundamental problem of saṃsāra, to be escaped through detachment, karma-shedding austerity, or enlightenment). Every occurrence of suffering-for-righteousness language in 1 Peter must be explicitly and repeatedly anchored to: (a) a personal relationship with a specific historical, presently-reigning Lord (પ્રભુ) who himself suffered substitutionarily and now shares his own glory with sufferers; (b) a temporary, purposeful, God-superintended trial with a certain future end (the living hope), not an endless feature of existence to be transcended by the sufferer’s own detachment or ascetic effort. Without this repeated anchoring, “blessed suffering” risks being heard simply as a Christian gloss on the pre-existing Hindu/Jain analysis that suffering is to be spiritually mastered through one’s own discipline.
- Κύριον τὸν Χριστὸν ἁγιάσατε ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν (Kyrion ton Christon hagiasate en tais kardiais hymōn) (3:15) — “sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts.” Reuses પ્રભુ, પવિત્ર [both TM REUSE — Critical/High].
- ἀπολογία (apologia) (3:15) — literal: “a spoken defense, as in a legal setting.” Semantic range: reasoned, verbal account/defense. English variants: “answer,” “defense,” “reason.” → [NEW] જવાબ/બચાવ (javāb/bachāv). Risk: Low-Medium.
- ἐλπὶς (in the sense of “the hope that is in you”) (3:15) — reuses જીવંત આશા family [High].
- συνείδησις ἀγαθή (syneidēsis agathē) (3:16, 21) — literal: “good conscience” (σύν + εἴδησις, “knowing-together-with-oneself”). Semantic range: the inner faculty of moral self-awareness before God. English variants: “conscience.” → [NEW] સારું અંતઃકરણ (sārũ antaḥkaraṇ). Risk: Medium. અંતઃકરણ carries technical philosophical weight in Vedantic thought (the “inner instrument” of mind-intellect-ego); here it must be anchored specifically to moral accountability before the personal God, not the impersonal cosmology of Sāṅkhya-Vedānta psychology.
- κρεῖττον … ἀγαθοποιοῦντας … πάσχειν ἢ κακοποιοῦντας (kreitton … agathopoiountas … paschein ē kakopoiountas) (3:17) — “better to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.” Reinforces SRS doctrine [Critical, see above].
- Χριστὸς ἅπαξ περὶ ἁμαρτιῶν ἔπαθεν, δίκαιος ὑπὲρ ἀδίκων (Christos hapax peri hamartiōn epathen, dikaios hyper adikōn) (3:18) — literal: “Christ suffered once for sins, the righteous for/on behalf of the unrighteous.” ἅπαξ (hapax) — “once, once-for-all” — a term of decisive finality, ruling out repetition. Contextual meaning: this verse is the fullest single-sentence statement of Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering in the letter, combining ὑπέρ-substitution with a once-for-all completeness that rules out any ongoing cycle of repeated atoning acts. → [NEW] એક જ વાર (ek ja vār, “one time only/once for all”). Risk: CRITICAL. ἅπαξ’s finality must be preserved explicitly against any reading assimilating Christ’s atoning suffering to a repeatable ritual, a repeatable avatar-descent, or an ongoing karmic process that must be repeated across cycles of existence.
- ἵνα ὑμᾶς προσαγάγῃ τῷ Θεῷ (hina hymas prosagagē tō Theō) (3:18) — literal: “that he might bring you near/grant access to God.” προσάγω (prosagō) — a term of formal introduction/access, often to a king’s presence. → [NEW] પરમેશ્વરની પાસે લાવવા (Parmeśvarnī pāse lāvavā). Risk: Medium-High. Reinforces the Holy and Royal Priesthood doctrine (2:5,9) — direct access to God is now granted through Christ’s substitutionary work, not mediated by a caste-restricted priestly class.
- θανατωθεὶς σαρκί, ζωοποιηθεὶς πνεύματι (thanatōtheis sarki, zōopoiētheis pneumati) (3:18) — literal: “having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit.” → [NEW] શરીરમાં મરણ પામ્યા, પણ આત્મામાં જીવતા થયા (śarīrmā maraṇ pāmyā, paṇ ātmāmā jīvatā thayā). Risk: CRITICAL. This is one of the most exegetically disputed clauses in the NT (referring either to the mode of Christ’s own resurrection life, or introducing the following proclamation-to-spirits event). Whatever exegetical position a given lesson takes, the Gujarati rendering must preserve the ambiguity rather than resolve it with an over-specific translation choice, and must be flagged for mandatory human theologian review at every occurrence.
- τοῖς ἐν φυλακῇ πνεύμασιν πορευθεὶς ἐκήρυξεν (tois en phylakē pneumasin poreutheis ekēryxen) (3:19) — literal: “having gone, he proclaimed to the spirits in prison.” πνεῦμα (pneuma) here = “spirit(s),” disembodied non-human or deceased-human beings (interpreters differ). φυλακή (phylakē) — “prison, place of confinement.” κηρύσσω (kēryssō) — “to proclaim, herald, announce” (not necessarily “preach the gospel for salvation” — a distinct, narrower sense of the same verb). Contextual meaning: this clause anchors the doctrine of Christ’s Proclamation to the Spirits, one of the most theologically disputed passages in the NT (with major interpretive traditions ranging from a proclamation of triumph over fallen angelic powers, to a proclamation through Noah to his generation while Christ’s Spirit was active in the pre-incarnate era, to a “descent to the dead” between Christ’s death and resurrection). → [NEW] બંદીખાનામાંના આત્માઓને પ્રગટ કર્યું / જાહેર કર્યું (bandīkhānāmānā ātmāone pragaṭ karyũ / jāhera karyũ). Risk: CRITICAL. This is the single highest-risk passage newly introduced by 1 Peter for the Gujarati context, for two compounding reasons: (1) the underlying exegetical controversy itself, which the translation must not silently resolve; and (2) આત્મા (spirit/soul) is the same word bearing the full weight of Hindu/Jain soul-theology (see ψυχή/જીવ note above; આત્મા also risks confusion with પવિત્ર આત્મા, the Holy Spirit). The rendering must make unmistakably clear that these are NOT the Holy Spirit, NOT the transmigrating jīva of Jain cosmology progressing toward liberation, and NOT a purgatorial “second chance for the dead” (a reading some traditions reject and others debate) — this term requires a mandatory theologian’s explanatory note at every occurrence and must never be used to imply that this passage teaches universal post-mortem salvation or a Jain-like continuing soul-journey.
- ἀπειθήσασίν ποτε … ἐν ἡμέραις Νῶε … κιβωτοῦ … διεσώθησαν δι’ ὕδατος (apeithēsasin pote … en hēmerais Nōe … kibōtou … diesōthēsan di’ hydatos) (3:20) — “who were formerly disobedient … in the days of Noah … the ark … were brought safely through water.” Standard OT-narrative proper names/vocabulary (નૂહ, નાવ/વહાણ = ark). Risk: Low-Medium (requires OT narrative background per the general low-OT-literacy caution in the baseline AI instructions).
- ἀντίτυπον … βάπτισμα (antitypon … baptisma) (3:21) — literal: “the corresponding-type/antitype … baptism.” ἀντίτυπος (antitypos) — a technical typological term: the later, greater reality that corresponds to an earlier OT “type” or pattern (here, the flood water corresponds to baptism). → [NEW] પ્રતિરૂપ (pratirūp). βάπτισμα (baptisma) → [NEW] બાપ્તિસ્મા (bāptismā, transliteration, standard Gujarati Christian loanword). Risk: Medium-High. Requires explicit typological explanation (a technical concept most new believers will not have); βાપ્તિસ્મા itself is well-established but the surrounding clause (“not the removal of dirt from the flesh but the appeal/pledge of a good conscience toward God”) must be preserved precisely to prevent baptism being understood as a ritual physical/ceremonial cleansing analogous to Hindu snāna (ritual bathing) or Jain purificatory rites.
- δι’ ἀναστάσεως Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ (di’ anastaseōs Iēsou Christou) (3:21) — “through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.” → પુનરુત્થાન [TM REUSE — Critical].
- ἐν δεξιᾷ Θεοῦ … ὑποταγέντων ἀγγέλων καὶ ἐξουσιῶν καὶ δυνάμεων (en dexia Theou … hypotagentōn angelōn kai exousiōn kai dynameōn) (3:22) — “at the right hand of God … angels and authorities and powers having been subjected to him.” ἐξουσία (exousia) — “authority.” δύναμις (dynamis) here refers to angelic/spiritual “powers,” distinct from the earlier δύναμις Θεοῦ (“power of God,” 1:5) — a context-sensitive term. → [NEW] અધિકારીઓ અને પરાક્રમો (adhikārīo ane parākramo) for authorities/powers in this specific sense, kept distinct from પરમેશ્વરનું સામર્થ્ય [TM]. Risk: High. Reinforces Christ’s Lordship doctrine [TM Critical] — his exaltation is total and cosmic, actively subjugating every other spiritual power, not a withdrawal into non-interactive isolation (cf. baseline’s explicit contrast with the Jain siddha’s permanent non-interactive withdrawal).
CHAPTER 4
- Χριστοῦ παθόντος σαρκί / τὴν αὐτὴν ἔννοιαν ὁπλίσασθε (Christou pathontos sarki / tēn autēn ennoian hoplisasthe) (4:1) — “Christ having suffered in the flesh / arm yourselves with the same mind/resolve.” Reinforces SRS and CSS doctrines [both Critical].
- ὁ παθὼν ἐν σαρκὶ πέπαυται ἁμαρτίας (ho pathōn en sarki pepautai hamartias) (4:1) — “he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin.”
Most items are standard vice vocabulary of Low risk. εἰδωλολατρία (eidōlolatria) — literal: “idol-service/worship.” → [NEW] મૂર્તિપૂજા (mūrtipūjā). Risk: High. This is the single most culturally sensitive item in the list, given that the overwhelming majority religious practice in Gujarat (Hindu image/mūrti worship) and, in a related but distinct form, Jain veneration before Tīrthankara images in the derasar, both involve devotional practice before a consecrated image. Per the baseline’s explicit instruction not to soften doctrinal statements for cultural sensitivity, this term must be translated plainly and accurately (idol-worship named as a vice believers have left behind), while pastoral framing in the lesson materials — not the translation itself — should distinguish the biblical target (worship rendered to any image in place of the one true God) from respectful cultural observation of neighbors’ religious practice.
- ἀποδώσουσιν λόγον τῷ … κρῖναι ζῶντας καὶ νεκρούς (apodōsousin logon tō … krinai zōntas kai nekrous) (4:5) — “will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.” κρίνω (krinō) — “to judge.” → [NEW] ન્યાય કરવો (nyāya karavo), reusing the ન્યાય root shared with ન્યાયીપણું/ન્યાયી ઠરાવવું [TM]. Risk: High. This personal, future, universal divine judgment (reinforcing the baseline’s universal_human_accountability doctrine, already High) must be clearly distinguished from the impersonal, automatic operation of karma-phala (the “fruit of karma” that plays out mechanically without a personal judge) prominent in both Hindu and Jain thought.
- νεκροῖς εὐηγγελίσθη (nekrois euēngelisthē) (4:6) — “the gospel was preached also to the dead.” Reuses સુવાર્તા [TM — Critical/High] but with a distinct, disputed referent (see 3:19 note above — this verse is widely read together with 3:19 as part of the Christ’s Proclamation to the Spirits doctrine complex, or alternatively as referring to believers now dead who heard the gospel while alive). Risk: CRITICAL, for the same reasons as 3:19; flag for mandatory theologian review, preserving translational ambiguity rather than resolving the exegetical debate.
- πάντων τὸ τέλος ἤγγικεν (pantōn to telos ēngiken) (4:7) — “the end of all things is at hand/has drawn near.” τέλος here in its other primary sense, “termination, close.” → [NEW] અંત (ant) — context-sensitive alternate rendering to 1:9’s પરિણામ (pariṇām, “outcome/goal”). Risk: High. Must communicate a linear, historical, approaching consummation of the whole created order — not a phase-transition within an endless cosmic cycle (cf. baseline’s fulfillment_of_prophecy doctrine).
- σωφρονήσατε καὶ νήψατε εἰς προσευχάς (sōphronēsate kai nēpsate eis proseuchas) (4:7) — “be sober-minded and watchful for prayers.” σωφρονέω (sōphroneō) — “to be of sound mind, self-controlled.” νήφω (nēphō) — “to be sober, alert” (root sense: not drunk). → [NEW] સાવધ અને સ્વસ્થ (sāvadh ane svasth). Risk: Medium-High. A natural rendering candidate, સંયમ/સંયમી (self-restraint), is deliberately rejected here: સંયમ is a core technical term of Jain ascetic ethics, naming one of the primary self-disciplines (restraint of the senses, speech, and mind) by which a Jain practitioner personally reduces karmic influx toward liberation. Using સંયમ for σωφρονέω/νήφω would frame biblical watchfulness-in-prayer as a self-achieved ascetic technique rather than an alert readiness for God’s action and Christ’s appearing.
- ἀγάπην ἐκτενῆ … ἀγάπη καλύπτει πλῆθος ἁμαρτιῶν (agapēn ektenē … agapē kalyptei plēthos hamartiōn) (4:8) — “fervent love … love covers a multitude of sins.” Reuses પ્રેમ family [Medium-High, see 1:8 note] and પાપ [TM].
- φιλόξενοι … ἄνευ γογγυσμῶν (philoxenoi … aneu gongysmōn) (4:9) — “hospitable … without grumbling.” → [NEW] પરોણાગત કરનારા… ફરિયાદ વગર (paroṇāgat karnārā… fariyād vagar). Risk: Low.
- ἕκαστος … χάρισμα … καλοὶ οἰκονόμοι ποικίλης χάριτος Θεοῦ (hekastos … charisma … kaloi oikonomoi poikilēs charitos Theou) (4:10) — “each … a gift … good stewards of the varied grace of God.” χάρισμα → આત્મિક કૃપાદાન [TM REUSE — Medium]. οἰκονόμος (oikonomos) — literal: “household manager, steward.” → [NEW] કારભારી (kārbhārī). Risk: Low-Medium.
- λόγια Θεοῦ / ἐξ ἰσχύος ἧς χορηγεῖ ὁ Θεός (logia Theou / ex ischyos hēs chorēgei ho Theos) (4:11) — “oracles of God / the strength which God supplies.” → પરમેશ્વરના વચનો / પરમેશ્વર જે સામર્થ્ય પૂરું પાડે છે (reuses પરમેશ્વરનું સામર્થ્ય family [TM]). Risk: Medium.
- δοξάζηται ὁ Θεός … ᾧ ἐστιν ἡ δόξα καὶ τὸ κράτος (doxazētai ho Theos … hō estin hē doxa kai to kratos) (4:11) — “God may be glorified … to whom belongs the glory and the dominion.” κράτος (kratos) — “might, dominion, sovereign power.” → [NEW] પ્રભુત્વ/સત્તા (prabhutva/sattā), reusing the પ્રભુ root. Risk: Medium.
- μὴ ξενίζεσθε τῇ … πυρώσει (mē xenizesthe tē … pyrōsei) (4:12) — literal: “do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal.” πύρωσις (pyrōsis) — “burning, fiery trial” (echoes the gold-refining metaphor of 1:7). → [NEW] અગ્નિરૂપી કસોટી (agnirūpī kasoṭī), reusing કસોટી [High, see 1:6–7]. Risk: High (core SRS doctrine restated).
- κοινωνεῖτε τοῖς τοῦ Χριστοῦ παθήμασιν χαίρετε (koinōneite tois tou Christou pathēmasin chairete) (4:13) — literal: “insofar as you share/participate in the sufferings of Christ, rejoice.” κοινωνέω (koinōneō) — verb form of the baseline’s κοινωνία root [TM: સંગત, fellowship, Low]. Contextual meaning here elevates “fellowship” to a specific, weighty sense: participatory union in Christ’s own sufferings, not merely social association. → [NEW] ખ્રિસ્તનાં દુઃખોમાં ભાગીદાર થાઓ (Khristnā duḥkhomā bhāgīdār thāo). Risk: CRITICAL — direct convergence point of the Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake doctrine and Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering doctrine: believers do not add to Christ’s finished, once-for-all (ἅπαξ, 3:18) atoning suffering, but participate in the pattern and fellowship of it. This distinction (participation-in-pattern vs. contribution-to-atonement) must be preserved with a translator note wherever this verse is used.
- ὀνειδίζεσθε ἐν ὀνόματι Χριστοῦ … τὸ τῆς δόξης Πνεῦμα (oneidizesthe en onomati Christou … to tēs doxēs Pneuma) (4:14) — “reproached for the name of Christ … the Spirit of glory.” Reuses મહિમા, પવિત્ર આત્મા family [TM]. Risk: High.
- φονεύς, κλέπτης, κακοποιός, ἀλλοτριοεπίσκοπος (phoneus, kleptēs, kakopoios, allotrioepiskopos) (4:15) — “murderer, thief, evildoer, meddler in others’ affairs.” Standard vocabulary; Low risk.
- εἰ … ὡς Χριστιανός, μὴ αἰσχυνέσθω, δοξάζέτω δὲ τὸν Θεὸν (ei … hōs Christianos, mē aischynesthō, doxazetō de ton Theon) (4:16) — “if [one suffers] as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but glorify God.” Χριστιανός (Christianos) — the term “Christian” itself, here in one of its earliest NT occurrences as a term of identity (originally likely a term of derision from outsiders). → ખ્રિસ્તી (khristī), the established Gujarati term. Risk: Low. No syncretism risk; note for context only.
- ὁ καιρὸς τοῦ ἄρξασθαι τὸ κρίμα ἀπὸ τοῦ οἴκου τοῦ Θεοῦ (ho kairos tou arxasthai to krima apo tou oikou tou Theou) (4:17) — “the time for judgment to begin at the house of God.” κρίμα (krima) — “judgment” (a distinct noun from κρίνω’s verbal form, same root). οἶκος τοῦ Θεοῦ (oikos tou Theou) — literal: “house of God” — here a designation for the believing community, not a building. → [NEW] પરમેશ્વરના ઘરથી ન્યાયનો આરંભ (Parmeśvarnā gharthī nyāyno ārambh). Risk: High. οἶκος τοῦ Θεοῦ (also cf. 2:5’s οἶκος πνευματικός and 4:17) is one of 1 Peter’s substitute expressions for what Romans and other epistles call ἐκκλησία (church) — note explicitly that 1 Peter never uses ἐκκλησία at all, favoring instead “house,” “flock,” “brotherhood,” and “people” language; the baseline term મંડળી [TM] may still be used in lesson commentary describing this community, but the specific phrase “house of God” here must not be rendered in a way that suggests a physical temple/shrine building (echoing the baseline’s caution against મંદિર/દેરાસર for “church”).
- εἰ ὁ δίκαιος μόλις σῴζεται (ei ho dikaios molis sōzetai) (4:18, quoting Proverbs 11:31) — “if the righteous one is scarcely/with difficulty saved.” Reuses ન્યાયી [ROOT of TM ન્યાયીપણું] and ઉદ્ધાર [TM — Critical].
- πιστῷ κτίστῃ παρατιθέσθωσαν τὰς ψυχὰς αὐτῶν ἐν ἀγαθοποιίᾳ (pistō ktistē paratithesthōsan tas psychas autōn en agathopoiia) (4:19) — literal: “let them entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing good.” κτίστης (ktistēs) — “Creator, one who founds/establishes.” → [NEW] વિશ્વાસુ સર્જનહાર (viśvāsu sarjanahār). Risk: High. This is a pointed, deliberate title with strong apologetic force in the Gujarat context: it directly confronts the Jain denial of any creator God (already flagged as a first-principles gap in the baseline’s incarnation doctrine note) and stands against any impersonal-ultimate-reality (Brahman) framing of divinity — the Creator here is personal, trustworthy, and can be entrusted with one’s whole inner self (ψુχή/જીવ, see High-risk note above) especially amid suffering.
CHAPTER 5
- πρεσβύτεροι … συμπρεσβύτερος (presbyteroi … sympresbyteros) (5:1) — literal: “elders … fellow-elder.” Semantic range: πρεσβύτερος, originally “an older man,” became the standard term for a recognized office of pastoral oversight in the earliest church, drawing on both the honor due to age/experience and a formally recognized responsibility (paired with ἐπίσκοπος/overseeing and ποιμήν/shepherding language in the same passage). English variants: “elders,” “presbyters.” Contextual meaning: the anchor term of the Elders and Humility doctrine — Peter identifies himself as a “fellow elder,” grounding the office in shared servanthood rather than hierarchical distance. → [NEW] વડીલો / સહવડીલ (vaḍīlo / sahvaḍīl). Risk: High. વડીલ is the natural, warm Gujarati word already used for a respected family/community elder, which is an advantage for conveying relational care; the risk to guard against is collapse into a ગુરુ-like role of self-attained spiritual authority (the baseline already rejects ગુરુ for “apostle” on identical grounds) or into a caste-linked position of inherited social seniority — 1 Peter’s elder is a servant-shepherd under the Chief Shepherd, accountable and marked by humility, not an independent guru figure commanding personal devotion.
- μάρτυς τῶν τοῦ Χριστοῦ παθημάτων (martys tōn tou Christou pathēmatōn) (5:1) — “witness of the sufferings of Christ.” Reuses દુઃખ family [Critical].
- ποιμάνατε τὸ … ποίμνιον τοῦ Θεοῦ (poimanate to … poimnion tou Theou) (5:2) — “shepherd the flock of God.” ποιμαίνω (poimainō) — verb, “to shepherd, tend as a shepherd.” ποίμνιον (poimnion) — “flock.” → [NEW] પરમેશ્વરના ટોળાની સંભાળ રાખો (Parmeśvarnā ṭoḷānī sambhāḷ rākho). Risk: High (same Krishna-gopāla collision risk noted at 2:25, here applied to human elders as under-shepherds — must be kept distinct from the Chief Shepherd title reserved for Christ alone, see below).
- ἐπισκοποῦντες … μὴ ἀναγκαστῶς ἀλλὰ ἑκουσίως, μηδὲ αἰσχροκερδῶς ἀλλὰ προθύμως (episkopountes … mē anagkastōs alla hekousiōs, mēde aischrokerdōs alla prothymōs) (5:2) — “exercising oversight not under compulsion but willingly, not for shameful/dishonest gain but eagerly.” αἰσχροκερδής (aischrokerdēs) — “greedy for dishonorable gain.” → [NEW] સ્વૈચ્છિક રીતે, અનિચ્છનીય લાભની લાલચ વગર (svaichchik rīte, anichchhanīy lābhnī lālach vagar). Risk: Medium-High. A direct warning against the commercialization of spiritual office — culturally relevant given the widespread and sometimes controversial economy of guru-donations (dakshina/offerings to spiritual teachers) in both Hindu and some folk-Christian contexts; elders must not model that economy.
- μηδὲ ὡς κατακυριεύοντες τῶν κλήρων ἀλλὰ τύποι γινόμενοι τοῦ ποιμνίου (mēde hōs katakyrieuontes tōn klērōn alla typoi ginomenoi tou poimniou) (5:3) — literal: “not lording it over those allotted [to you] but becoming examples to the flock.” κατακυριεύω (katakyrieuō) — intensified form of κύριος-root, “to dominate, lord over.” τύπος (typos) — “pattern, example, model.” → [NEW] પ્રભુત્વ ચલાવવાને બદલે નમૂનારૂપ બનો (prabhutva chalāvavāne badale namūnārūp bano). Risk: High. A direct, explicit prohibition on exactly the kind of hierarchical, honor-commanding authority that the guru-disciple and caste-elder models in Gujarati culture often assume; the elder’s authority is modeled on Christ’s own self-giving pattern (2:21’s ὑπογραμμός), not on dominating status.
- φανερωθέντος τοῦ ἀρχιποίμενος … ἀμαράντινον τῆς δόξης στέφανον (phanerōthentos tou archipoimenos … amarantinon tēs doxēs stephanon) (5:4) — “when the Chief Shepherd is manifested … the unfading crown of glory.” ἀρχιποίμην (archipoimēn) — “chief/head shepherd,” a title reserved for Christ alone, distinguishing him categorically from the human elder-shepherds of 5:2. → [NEW] મુખ્ય ઘેટાંપાળક (mukhya gheṭāṅpāḷak). Reuses મહિમા [TM] and the કદી ન કરમાય તેવો (unfading) construction from 1:4 [High]. Risk: High. This title must be kept visibly distinct in translation from the human “elders/shepherds” of 5:1–3 to preserve the doctrine’s careful hierarchy: elders are under-shepherds accountable to the one Chief Shepherd, Christ, whose own future appearing (reusing φανερόω, see 1:20 note) will disclose and reward faithful shepherding.
- νεώτεροι, ὑποτάγητε πρεσβυτέροις … πάντες ἀλλήλοις ὑποτασσόμενοι τὴν ταπεινοφροσύνην ἐγκομβώσασθε (neōteroi, hypotagēte presbyterois … pantes allēlois hypotassomenoi tēn tapeinophrosynēn enkombōsasthe) (5:5) — literal: “younger ones, submit to elders … all of you, being subject to one another, clothe yourselves with humility [ἐγκομβόομαι, literally ‘tie on as an apron/outer garment’].” ταπεινοφροσύνη (tapeinophrosynē) — “lowliness of mind, humility.” Contextual meaning: the capstone statement of the Elders and Humility doctrine, extending mutual submission and humility to the entire community, not only to those under authority. → [NEW] નમ્રતા પહેરી લો (namratā paherī lo, preserving the vivid “put on as a garment” idiom). Risk: High. નમ્રતા is a broadly shared virtue-term, but the Jain/Hindu ascetic tradition frequently frames humility (vinaya) as a self-cultivated discipline that reduces the ego and thereby reduces karmic bondage — a meritorious achievement of the practitioner. 1 Peter’s humility, by contrast, flows from and mirrors Christ’s own pattern of self-giving (2:21–24) and is explicitly grounded in confidence that God himself will exalt the humble (5:6) — a relational posture toward a personal, gracious God, not a self-improvement technique that earns spiritual advancement.
- ὁ Θεὸς ὑπερηφάνοις ἀντιτάσσεται, ταπεινοῖς δὲ δίδωσιν χάριν (ho Theos hyperēphanois antitassetai, tapeinois de didōsin charin) (5:5, quoting Proverbs 3:34) — “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” ὑπερήφανος (hyperēphanos) — “proud, arrogant.” Reuses કૃપા [TM — Critical]. → [NEW] અભિમાની (abhimānī) for “proud.” Risk: High (direct Grace-doctrine collision point per baseline’s existing note — grace is given, not earned, and is here explicitly contrasted with pride, reinforcing the baseline’s warning that grace-versus-merit contrasts require careful handling against both the Hindu karma-merit economy and Jain nirjarā self-effort).
- ταπεινώθητε … ὑπὸ τὴν κραταιὰν χεῖρα τοῦ Θεοῦ … ὑψώσῃ ἐν καιρῷ (tapeinōthēte … hypo tēn krataian cheira tou Theou … hypsōsē en kairō) (5:6) — “humble yourselves … under the mighty hand of God … that he may exalt you in due time.” Reuses નમ્રતા family [High].
- πᾶσαν τὴν μέριμναν … ἐπιρίψαντες ἐπ’ αὐτόν, ὅτι αὐτῷ μέλει περὶ ὑμῶν (pasan tēn merimnan … epiripsantes ep’ auton, hoti autō melei peri hymōn) (5:7) — “casting all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you.” μέριμνα (merimna) — “anxiety, worry, care.” → [NEW] ચિંતા (cintā). Risk: Medium. Reinforces the baseline’s providence doctrine (પરમેશ્વરનું વિધાન) — a personal God who actively cares, not an impersonal law of cause-and-effect indifferent to the individual.
- νήψατε, γρηγορήσατε (nēpsate, grēgorēsate) (5:8) — “be sober, be watchful/alert.” Reuses સાવધ family [Medium-High, see 4:7 note on avoiding સંયમ].
- ὁ ἀντίδικος ὑμῶν διάβολος … ὡς λέων ὠρυόμενος … ζητῶν καταπιεῖν (ho antidikos hymōn diabolos … hōs leōn ōryomenos … zētōn katapiein) (5:8) — “your adversary the devil … as a roaring lion … seeking [someone] to devour.” διάβολος (diabolos) — literal: “slanderer, accuser.” → [NEW] શેતાન (śetān), the established Gujarati Christian term (a Semitic loanword already widely recognized across Indian Christian usage). Risk: Medium. Must be taught as a specific, personal, defeated-yet-still-active adversary — not conflated with the generic folk category of malevolent ghosts/spirits (ભૂત-પ્રેત, bhoot-pret) common in Gujarati folk religion, nor with any impersonal principle of cosmic evil.
- ἀντίστητε στερεοὶ τῇ πίστει (antistēte stereoi tē pistei) (5:9) — “resist him, firm in the faith.” Reuses વિશ્વાસ [TM — High].
- τῇ ἐν κόσμῳ ὑμῶν ἀδελφότητι (tē en kosmō hymōn adelphotēti) (5:9) — “your brotherhood in the world.” ἀδελφότης (adelphotēs) — “brotherhood, the community of believers as siblings.” → [NEW] ભાઈચારો (bhāīchāro). Risk: Low-Medium.
- ὁ Θεὸς πάσης χάριτος, ὁ καλέσας … εἰς τὴν αἰώνιον αὐτοῦ δόξαν ἐν Χριστῷ (ho Theos pasēs charitos, ho kalesas … eis tēn aiōnion autou doxan en Christō) (5:10) — “the God of all grace, who called [you] … to his eternal glory in Christ.” Reuses કૃપા, તેડાયેલા/તેડું, મહિમા [all TM — Critical/High].
- ὀλίγον παθόντας … καταρτίσει, στηρίξει, σθενώσει, θεμελιώσει (oligon pathontas … katartisei, stērixei, sthenōsei, themeliōsei) (5:10) — “after you have suffered a little while, [he] will himself perfect/restore, establish, strengthen, and settle [you].” καταρτίζω (katartizō) — “to complete, restore, mend, make fully what it ought to be.” → [NEW] પૂર્ણ કરશે, સ્થિર કરશે, બળવાન કરશે, દ્રઢ કરશે (pūrṇa karśe, sthir karśe, baḷvān karśe, dṛḍh karśe). Risk: Medium-High. Reuses the દુઃખ [Critical] family; note the tightly compressed order — brief suffering, then God’s own comprehensive restorative action — reinforces that suffering is bounded and purposeful under a personal, active God, not an indefinite feature of existence to be personally transcended.
- αὐτῷ τὸ κράτος εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας (autō to kratos eis tous aiōnas) (5:11) — “to him [be] the dominion forever.” Reuses પ્રભુત્વ/સત્તા [Medium, see 4:11 note].
- διὰ Σιλουανοῦ … ἔγραψα, ἐπιμαρτυρῶν ταύτην εἶναι ἀληθῆ χάριν τοῦ Θεοῦ (dia Silouanou … egrapsa, epimartyrōn tautēn einai alēthē charin tou Theou) (5:12) — “through Silvanus I have written, testifying that this is the true grace of God.” Proper name Σιλουανός → established Gujarati Bible form સિલ્વાનસ (Silvānas). Reuses કૃપા [TM]. Risk: Low (proper name) / the doctrinal phrase itself is High by inheritance from કૃપા.
- ἡ ἐν Βαβυλῶνι συνεκλεκτή (hē en Babylōni syneklektē) (5:13) — “she who is in Babylon, co-elect [with you].” Βαβυλών (Babylōn) — here almost certainly a coded reference to Rome, following contemporary Jewish-Christian apocalyptic convention. → established form બાબેલોન (Bābelon). Risk: Low-Medium (proper name with symbolic freight; a brief translator/teacher note on the Rome-as-Babylon convention is advisable, but no forbidden-term risk).
- Μᾶρκος ὁ υἱός μου (Markos ho huios mou) (5:13) — “Mark, my son” (a term of spiritual, not biological, relationship). Proper name માર્ક (Mārk). Risk: Low.
- ἀσπάσασθε ἀλλήλους ἐν φιλήματι ἀγάπης (aspasasthe allēlous en philēmati agapēs) (5:14) — “greet one another with a kiss of love.” φίλημα ἀγάπης (philēma agapēs) — a customary early-church greeting formula. → [NEW] પ્રેમના ચુંબનથી (premnā chumbanthī). Risk: Low-Medium (cultural adaptation note: a literal “kiss” greeting is culturally unusual in a modern Gujarati setting and may require an explanatory teaching note on ancient greeting custom, distinct from any doctrinal risk).
- εἰρήνη ὑμῖν πᾶσιν τοῖς ἐν Χριστῷ (eirēnē hymin pasin tois en Christō) (5:14) — “peace to you all who are in Christ.” Reuses શાંતિ [TM — Medium] and the “in Christ” identity formula (cf. baseline’s christian_identity_in_christ doctrine, High).
Summary of Full-Book Coverage
All five chapters of 1 Peter have been analyzed. No chapter was found to introduce zero new theological vocabulary; every chapter contributes load-bearing terms to at least one of the eight curriculum doctrines or to a baseline-shared doctrine carried over from Romans. The single highest-concentration risk cluster in the whole book is 1 Peter 3:18–20 and 4:6 (Christ’s Proclamation to the Spirits), which combines the book’s most exegetically disputed clause with the book’s most theologically loaded vocabulary term (πνεῦμα/આત્મા, colliding directly with Jain jīva-soul theology and with the baseline’s reservation of આત્મા for the Holy Spirit). This cluster, together with the substitutionary suffering language of 2:21–25 and 3:18, and the “Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake” vocabulary running throughout (πάθημα/πάσχω, colliding with the shared Hindu-Jain-Buddhist dukkha framework), should receive priority attention in Phase 2 human theologian review.
