Cross-Reference Analysis

Cross-Reference Analysis — Matthew 1–28

Methodology and Scope

This document catalogs every Old Testament quotation, allusion, and typological pattern in the Gospel of Matthew, chapter by chapter, together with messianic references, character cross-references, and — critically for this language package — every point of contact with the baseline Romans curriculum already localized into Gujarati. Where Matthew and Romans quote, echo, or theologically depend on the same Old Testament text, a rendering-consistency rule is issued so that Phase 2 translators produce identical or deliberately-harmonized Gujarati across both curricula.

Citation convention used in this document: all citations are given in normalizable Book chapter:verse form (e.g., Genesis 15:6, Matthew 5:3) for internal cross-referencing. Section E below maps every English book name used in this document to its established Gujarati Bible form, extending the table already given in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md. Gujarati-facing output must always use the Gujarati book name + Arabic numerals (e.g., માથ્થી 5:3), never the English form or Gujarati numerals, per the baseline’s existing citation rule.

Sensitivity rating in the matrix below follows the same Critical/High/Medium/Low tiers as doctrine_risk_registry.json.

Section D — Parallels to Romans (Cross-Curriculum Alignment Table)

This table is the primary artifact for Phase 2 consistency: every row names a Matthew passage and its Romans counterpart that either (a) quote the identical OT text, (b) share identical Gujarati translation-memory terms, or (c) teach the identical doctrine such that a Gujarati reader moving between the two curricula must encounter matching vocabulary.

Both texts undercut a merit-transaction reading of God’s favor
Critical — the baseline’s verbatim rule for Romans 10:9 (“ઈસુ પ્રભુ છે”) must govern how ὁμολογέω/κablul-karavũ is rendered wherever Matthew 10:32 is taught alongside it
Matthew 11:28-30Romans 5:1Rest / peace with Godશાંતિ, વિસામોRelated but distinct terms — do not merge; વિસામો names Christ-given relational rest, શાંતિ names the baseline relational-peace doctrine

Both texts ground salvation entirely in God’s power, never human effort
Matthew 20:1-16Romans 4:4-5; 11:5-6Grace vs. wage/meritકૃપાCritical — this parable is the primary narrative illustration for the baseline’s grace-vs-merit doctrine; Phase 2 lesson materials referencing both should use matching illustrative language
Matthew 21:42Romans 9:32-33Rejected/stumbling stoneખૂણાનો પથ્થરHigh — two related but distinct OT stone-texts (Psalm 118:22 vs. Isaiah 8:14/28:16); add translator note distinguishing them even while both point to Christ’s rejection

Matthew 25:46Romans 2:6-11Final judgment revealing the heartઅનંત દંડ, અનંત જીવનBoth are linear, final, unending — never cyclical
Critical — both are flagged for mandatory theologian review per baseline escalation rules for atonement/propitiation language
Matthew 27:46Romans 8:32Real substitutionary suffering(conceptual, no shared single term)Preserve the weight of genuine abandonment/giving-up in both texts; do not soften either
Critical — both books bookend with an “obedience of faith to all nations” formula; render with matching vocabulary

Doctrinal-Nuance Note: Righteousness and Law Vocabulary Shared Between Matthew and Romans

Matthew’s δικαιοσύνη (5:6, 5:10, 5:20, 6:33) carries a stronger lived/ethical-conduct emphasis than Romans’ more forensic emphasis, though both senses are present in each book. Both must use the identical baseline term ન્યાયીપણું — translators must not invent a separate “ethical righteousness” term for Matthew. Instead, teaching notes accompanying Matthew 5:20 and similar verses should clarify that the righteousness that “exceeds the Pharisees” is the fruit of the righteousness received by faith taught in Romans 3-4, never a self-generated substitute for it. This is the same caution the baseline gives for imputed_righteousness (Romans 4) and must be extended into Matthew’s curriculum notes rather than treated as a separate doctrine.

Similarly, Matthew 7:21 (“does the will of my Father”) and Romans 2:13 (“the doers of the law will be justified”) must both be taught with the same clarification the baseline gives to obedience_of_faith (Romans 1:5): obedience is the fruit and evidence of grace-given faith, not its precondition. This nuance is Critical-tier and requires human theologian review wherever either verse is taught in relation to salvation.

Section E — Citation Normalization Table

All citations in Matthew curriculum materials must follow the Book chapter:verse internal format for documentation, and the established Gujarati Bible book-name format for learner-facing output (Gujarati book name + Arabic numerals, per 12_ai_translation_requirements.md). This table extends the baseline’s book-name list with every OT/NT book cited in this analysis.

Note on the Gujarati form for Matthew: curriculum materials should cite the Gospel itself as માથ્થી followed by chapter:verse (e.g., માથ્થી ૫:૩ in running Gujarati prose is non-standard — retain Arabic numerals per the baseline’s YouVersion-alignment rule: માથ્થી 5:3).

  5. Matthew 16:16 (Peter’s confession) paired with Romans 1:4/9:5
  6. Matthew 20:1-16 paired with Romans 4:4-5/11:5-6 (grace vs. merit)
  7. Matthew 21:42/Psalm 118:22 paired with Romans 9:32-33/Isaiah 8:14, 28:16 (stone testimonia)
  8. Matthew 22:37-39/Deuteronomy 6:5 + Leviticus 19:18 paired with Romans 13:8-10
  9. Matthew 26:26-28 (Last Supper, covenant blood) paired with Romans 3:25 (propitiation)
  10. Matthew 28:18-20 (Great Commission) paired with Romans 1:1-5/16:26 (obedience of faith to the nations)
