Core Glossary
Core Glossary — Hebrews 1–13 (English/Greek → Gujarati)
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, spanning Hebrews 1–13. Terms already fixed in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json are marked [TM REUSE] and their baseline Gujarati rendering is reused exactly, with no deviation. Terms new to the Hebrews curriculum are marked [NEW] and proposed here for formal addition to translation memory, pending theologian review for all Critical/High entries per the baseline’s escalation rules.
Risk tiers follow the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json definitions exactly:
- Critical — mistranslation destroys essential doctrine; mandatory human theologian review, every occurrence.
- High — mistranslation risks significant theological confusion/syncretism; mandatory human theologian review.
- Medium — mistranslation reduces clarity but preserves essential meaning; native speaker review recommended.
- Low — minor imprecision risk; automated review sufficient.

Risk Summary for Hebrews New-Term Additions
| Risk Tier | Count | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|
| Critical | 10 | Human theologian (mandatory, every occurrence) |
| High | 26 | Human theologian (mandatory) |
| Medium | 28 | Native speaker review |
| Low | 6 | Automated review |
| Total new terms | 70 |
Highest-priority flag for Phase 1 Step 2 (theologian review): term #9, ἱλάσκομαι → પ્રાયશ્ચિત્ત કરવું, due to its direct lexical overlap with the Jain technical term for self-performed ascetic penance. This single term requires resolution before any Phase 2 translation of Hebrews 2:17, 9 (mercy seat context), or related atonement passages may proceed.
Second-priority flag: term #26, καθαρίζω/καθαρισμός → શુદ્ધ કરવું/શુદ્ધિકરણ, given its unavoidable but heavily loaded overlap with Jain ritual/ascetic purity vocabulary, concentrated in Hebrews 9–10.
Cross-reference note: Terms #8 (કૃપાસન, mercy seat) and #9 (પ્રાયશ્ચિત્ત કરવું, to make propitiation) together resolve the unresolved “atonement/propitiation language (Romans 3:25)” escalation flag already present in the baseline 12_ai_translation_requirements.md. Upon theologian approval, these renderings should be back-ported into the Romans translation memory for 3:25 to ensure cross-curriculum consistency.
Critical Risk Terms
God
Approved rendering: પરમેશ્વર
Transliteration: Parmeśvar
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ઈશ્વર, ભગવાન
Original: θεός
Category: God
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. CRITICAL: ભગવાન is extremely common colloquially in Gujarat for any Hindu deity, and among Jains is often applied to the Tirthankaras — perfected, liberated human teachers rather than an eternal creator. પરમેશ્વર is preferred for doctrinal precision. Hebrews usage: the personal, speaking, judging God of 1:1-2 (‘God…spoke’) and 12:29 (‘our God is a consuming fire’) — never an impersonal ultimate reality.
Jesus
Approved rendering: ઈસુ
Transliteration: Īsu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ઈસા
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. ઈસુ is the Gujarati Christian standard; ઈસા is associated with Muslim/Urdu usage. Used throughout Hebrews as the proper name of the Great High Priest (2:9; 3:1; 4:14; 12:2, 24; 13:20).
Lord
Approved rendering: પ્રભુ
Transliteration: prabhu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: સ્વામી, તીર્થંકર
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Must convey a living, presently reigning sovereign, distinct from a Jain Tirthankara permanently withdrawn to siddha-loka. Hebrews reinforces this at 7:25 (‘always lives to make intercession’) and 9:24 (‘now to appear in the presence of God for us’) — active, ongoing lordship, not a completed departure. Also 1:10; 13:20.
Son Of God
Approved rendering: પરમેશ્વરનો પુત્ર
Transliteration: Parmeśvarno Putra
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: દેવપુરુષ, અવતારી પુરુષ
Original: υἱὸς τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Christology
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Full phrase required; conveys eternal, unique Sonship. Hebrews 1:2-8 builds this doctrine from an OT catena (Ps 2, 2 Sam 7, Ps 45, Ps 102, Ps 110); also 4:14; 5:5; 6:6; 7:3; 10:29. Must never read as honorary or adoptive sonship.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: પવિત્ર આત્મા
Transliteration: Pavitra Ātmā
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: પરમાત્મા, બ્રહ્મ
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: God
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Never પરમાત્મા or બ્રહ્મ. At Hebrews 9:14, pair with અનંત (never સનાતન): અનંત આત્મા (‘eternal Spirit’). Also active in inspiring Scripture at 3:7; 9:8; 10:15.
Father
Approved rendering: પિતા
Transliteration: Pitā
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: સૃષ્ટિકર્તા
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. God as personal Father; avoid abstract creator-titles lacking relational warmth. Hebrews 12:5-11’s fatherly discipline must not be read through impersonal karmic retribution — hardship is this Father’s deliberate, loving formation of true sons.
Incarnation
Approved rendering: દેહધારણ
Transliteration: dehdhāraṇ
Doctrine: Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: અવતાર
Original: ὁ λόγος σὰρξ ἐγένετο (theological name; cf. Heb 2:14, μετέσχεν σαρκὸς καὶ αἵματος)
Category: Christology
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. CRITICAL: NEVER અવતાર. Hebrews 2:14, 17 (‘partook of flesh and blood,’ ‘made like his brothers’) and 10:5, 20 apply this doctrine; Jain hearers have no incarnation concept at all (no creator God) and require the doctrine built from first principles.
Resurrection
Approved rendering: પુનરુત્થાન
Transliteration: punarutthān
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Rejected alternatives: પુનર્જન્મ, ફરી અવતરવું
Original: ἀνάστασις
Category: Eschatology
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. CRITICAL: NEVER પુનર્જન્મ. Hebrews 6:2, 11:35 (paired with ચઢિયાતું as ચઢિયાતું પુનરુત્થાન — ‘better resurrection,’ never implying a superior turn within a rebirth cycle), and 13:20. Distinguish from Jain karma-particle transmigration.
Salvation
Approved rendering: ઉદ્ધાર
Transliteration: uddhār
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: મોક્ષ, મુક્તિ, કેવલજ્ઞાન, સિદ્ધત્વ
Original: σωτηρία
Category: Salvation
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. CRITICAL: never મોક્ષ, મુક્તિ, કેવલજ્ઞાન, or સિદ્ધત્વ. Hebrews 1:14; 2:3, 10; 5:9; 9:28 — at 9:28 note the eschatological (culmination awaited at Christ’s second appearing) nuance in translator commentary even though the same Gujarati word is used. Also the root for the ‘redemption’ compound term below.
Grace
Approved rendering: કૃપા
Transliteration: kṛpā
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: મહેરબાની, કર્મફળ, પુણ્ય, નિર્જરા
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Every occurrence must make explicit that grace is unearned and comes through Christ alone; never નિર્જરા or પુણ્ય. Hebrews 4:16 (‘throne of grace,’ કૃપાનું સિંહાસન — approached boldly, not petitioned through ritual merit-transaction), 12:15, 28; 13:9, 25.
Covenant
Approved rendering: કરાર
Transliteration: karār
Doctrine: New Covenant versus the Old
Rejected alternatives: સમજૂતી
Original: διαθήκη
Category: Covenant
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, risk tier ESCALATED from High (Romans) to Critical for Hebrews given the book’s sustained new-vs-old covenant argument spanning chs. 7-10 and 13. New = નવો કરાર; Old = જૂનો કરાર. At 9:16-17 a mandatory translator note supplies the will/testament sense explicitly (વસિયતનામાની જેમ) since Gujarati કરાર lacks Greek διαθήκη’s dual sense.
Righteousness
Approved rendering: ન્યાયીપણું
Transliteration: nyāyīpaṇũ
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: ધર્મ, પુણ્ય, સમ્યક્ ચારિત્ર્ય
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Never ધર્મ. Hebrews 1:9 (quoting Ps 45, ‘loved righteousness’); 5:13; 7:2 (Melchizedek, ‘king of righteousness’); 11:7, 33; 12:11 — right standing/character granted or recognized by God, not self-achieved conduct.
Messiah
Approved rendering: મસીહા
Transliteration: Masīhā
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Rejected alternatives: અવતારી પુરુષ
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. The unique OT-promised deliverer. ‘Christ’ (Χριστός) functions as this title throughout Hebrews as part of Jesus’ name; must retain distinction from Vaishnav avatar-descent figures and from the Jain lineage of twenty-four Tirthankaras.
Imputed Righteousness
Approved rendering: આરોપિત ન્યાયીપણું
Transliteration: āropit nyāyīpaṇũ
Doctrine: Justification by Faith
Rejected alternatives: સ્વ-પ્રયત્નથી મેળવેલ ન્યાયીપણું
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Hebrews 11:7: Noah became ‘heir of the righteousness that comes by faith’ — credited righteousness received by faith, not self-earned. NOT rendered as self-effort-earned standing.
High Priest
Approved rendering: પ્રમુખ યાજક
Transliteration: pramukh yājak
Doctrine: Christ as the Great High Priest
Rejected alternatives: ગુરુ, પુરોહિત, બ્રાહ્મણ
Original: ἀρχιερεύς
Category: Priesthood
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. The book’s central Christological title (2:17-18; 4:14-16; 5:1-10; 6:20; 7:26-28; 8:1; 9:11-12; 9:24; 10:21). Never ગુરુ (self-attained teacher-authority) or પુરોહિત/બ્રાહ્મણ (caste-inherited ritual specialist). A unique, once-for-all, divinely-appointed office fulfilled in Christ alone. Mandatory theologian review, every occurrence.
Mercy Seat
Approved rendering: કૃપાસન
Transliteration: kṛpāsan
Doctrine: Once-for-All Atoning Sacrifice
Rejected alternatives: પ્રાયશ્ચિત્તનું સ્થાન
Original: ἱλαστήριον
Category: Salvation
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. Built on TM કૃપા. The ark’s golden cover where atoning blood was applied (9:5). Deliberately kept lexically distinct from ‘propitiation’ (પ્રાયશ્ચિત્ત કરવું) below, so the furniture-object is not conflated with the priestly action performed there. Directly resolves the baseline’s unresolved Romans 3:25 escalation flag; recommend back-porting to Romans TM upon theologian approval. Mandatory theologian review.
Propitiation
Approved rendering: પ્રાયશ્ચિત્ત કરવું
Transliteration: prāyaścitta karavũ
Doctrine: Propitiation and Atonement
Original: ἱλάσκομαι
Category: Salvation
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. HIGHEST-CAUTION TERM IN THE ENTIRE PACKAGE. પ્રાયશ્ચિત્ત is also the named Jain technical term (one of the six internal austerities) for self-performed penance atoning for a monk’s own vow-infractions — mechanism reversed 180 degrees from Hebrews 2:17: Jain પ્રાયશ્ચિત્ત is self-performed and earns karmic removal; Hebrews’ propitiation is Christ’s own priestly act performed FOR the sinner, prior to and apart from any penance the sinner could perform. No viable substitute word exists in Gujarati — this term cannot be avoided, only fenced. MANDATORY: a standing translator note at every occurrence and a supplementary explanatory clause on first occurrence (2:17) distinguishing this from self-performed penitential austerity. Mandatory theologian review, every occurrence, blocks Phase 2 progress until confirmed.
Apostasy
Approved rendering: વિશ્વાસત્યાગ
Transliteration: viśvāstyāg
Doctrine: The Danger of Apostasy and Warning Passages
Rejected alternatives: ધર્મત્યાગ
Original: παραπίπτω / ἀποστασία
Category: Apostasy
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. Built from TM વિશ્વાસ root rather than ધર્મ, to avoid framing apostasy as abandoning a dharma-system rather than abandoning personal trust in Christ. The definitive term for 6:6 and the underlying concept at 3:12; 10:26-29; 12:25. Mandatory theologian review, every occurrence.
Redemption
Approved rendering: ઉદ્ધાર (રક્તથી પ્રાપ્ત થયેલો)
Transliteration: uddhār (raktathī prāpta thayelo)
Doctrine: Once-for-All Atoning Sacrifice
Rejected alternatives: મોક્ષ, મુક્તિ, કેવલજ્ઞાન, સિદ્ધત્વ
Original: λύτρωσις / ἀπολύτρωσις
Category: Salvation
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. Reuses TM ઉદ્ધાર (salvation) with a mandatory ransom-price gloss on first occurrence (9:12): ‘રક્તથી પ્રાપ્ત થયેલો ઉદ્ધાર’ (redemption obtained through blood), so λύτρωσις’s price-paid nuance is not lost even though the same Gujarati root covers σωτηρία. Also 9:15. Mandatory theologian review.
Cleanse
Approved rendering: શુદ્ધ કરવું / શુદ્ધિકરણ
Transliteration: śuddha karavũ / śuddhikaraṇ
Doctrine: Cleansing of the Conscience
Rejected alternatives: તપ દ્વારા શુદ્ધિ
Original: καθαρίζω / καθαρισμός
Category: Salvation
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. The only natural Gujarati verb for ‘cleanse,’ yet precisely the vocabulary of Jain ritual/ascetic self-purification (progressive shedding of karmic impurity via tapa). Cannot be avoided, only fenced. MANDATORY theologian review at every occurrence in chs. 9-10 (9:13-14, 22; 10:2), with a translator note distinguishing cleansing received through another’s blood from purity achieved through one’s own ascetic discipline.
Radiance Of Glory
Approved rendering: મહિમાનું પ્રતિબિંબ
Transliteration: mahimānũ pratibimb
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: તેજ, પ્રકાશ
Original: ἀπαύγασμα
Category: Christology
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. Built on TM મહિમા. The Son perfectly radiates God’s own glory (1:3), a favorite proof-text for co-equal deity. Risks collision with bhakti tejas-devotion and Jain kevala-jnana (self-attained infinite light). Must be anchored with a translator note: eternal, underived, co-essential glory, not an attained inner illumination. Mandatory theologian review.
Exact Representation
Approved rendering: સત્વનું પ્રતિરૂપ
Transliteration: satvanũ pratirūp
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Original: χαρακτήρ
Category: Christology
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. The precise reproduction/imprint of an original, as a coin bears its die’s exact image; the Son is the exact expression of God’s own being (1:3). Together with radiance_of_glory, one of the strongest deity-of-Christ texts in the NT. Must never be softened toward ‘a very godlike being.’ Mandatory theologian review.
Appear Manifest
Approved rendering: પ્રગટ થવું
Transliteration: pragaṭ thavũ
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Original: ἐμφανίζω / φανερόω
Category: Christology
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. Christ’s past historical appearing (9:26), ongoing heavenly presence before God (9:24), and future second appearing (9:28) — a three-part appearing framework. Sharply distinguished from the Jain Tirthankara/siddha, permanently withdrawn in total non-interaction with the world. Mandatory theologian review; keep the three occurrences lexically related but contextually distinguished.
Bear The Sins
Approved rendering: ઘણાંનાં પાપ પોતા પર લેવાં
Transliteration: ghaṇāṅnāṅ pāp potā par levāṅ
Doctrine: Once-for-All Atoning Sacrifice
Original: ἀναφέρω ἁμαρτίας (πολλῶν)
Category: Salvation
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. Echoing Isaiah 53:12; Christ’s single offering bore, and thereby dealt fully with, the sins of many (9:28) — the heart of substitutionary atonement. Must never be rendered as though Christ merely ‘sympathized with’ or ‘taught about’ sin; must be distinguished from sin as impersonal karmic residue worked off by self-effort. Mandatory theologian review.
High Risk Terms
Faith
Approved rendering: વિશ્વાસ
Transliteration: viśvāsa
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: શ્રદ્ધા, ભક્તિ
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Personal trust in Christ, never શ્રદ્ધા or ભક્તિ (bhakti devotional-reverence connotations). Chapter 11, the ‘Hall of Faith,’ is the load-bearing chapter for this term in Hebrews — every instance must use this identical word with zero exceptions.
Law
Approved rendering: નિયમશાસ્ત્ર
Transliteration: niyamśāstra
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Rejected alternatives: ધર્મ, શરિયત
Original: νόμος
Category: Covenant
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. NEVER ધર્મ. Recurs constantly through Hebrews 7-10’s sustained argument that a change of priesthood entails a change of law (7:12).
Sin
Approved rendering: પાપ
Transliteration: pāp
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Rejected alternatives: અધર્મ
Original: ἁμαρτία
Category: Sin
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Moral transgression against a personal God, decisively dealt with by Christ’s sacrifice (9:26; 10:18), not impersonal karmic residue (karma-pudgala) removed by self-effort austerity.
Holy
Approved rendering: પવિત્ર
Transliteration: pavitra
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: શુદ્ધ
Original: ἅγιος
Category: Sanctification
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Set apart for God and morally pure; avoid શુદ્ધ-only renderings leaning toward ritual/ascetic purity. Root underlying Hebrews-specific compounds પવિત્રસ્થાન (holy place) and પવિત્ર કરવું (sanctify).
Sanctification
Approved rendering: પવિત્રીકરણ
Transliteration: pavitrikaraṇ
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: શુદ્ધિકરણ, તપ દ્વારા શુદ્ધિ
Original: ἁγιασμός
Category: Sanctification
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Spirit-worked holiness, never તપ (Jain ascetic austerity). Hebrews 2:11; 9:13-14 (deliberately contrasts merely external bodily purity with conscience-level cleansing — this contrast must be preserved, not flattened); 10:10, 14; 12:14; 13:12.
Glory
Approved rendering: મહિમા
Transliteration: mahimā
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: તેજ, પ્રકાશ
Original: δόξα
Category: God
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Avoid light-only imagery merging with Hindu divine-light or Jain kevala-jnana associations. Root underlying Hebrews 1:3’s મહિમાનું પ્રતિબિંબ (radiance of glory); also 2:7, 9-10; 3:3; 13:21.
Called
Approved rendering: તેડાયેલા
Transliteration: tedāyelā
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Rejected alternatives: આમંત્રિત
Original: κλητός / κεκλημένοι
Category: Salvation
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Context-sensitive. At Hebrews 9:15, matches the effectual-calling-to-salvation sense (cf. Romans 8:28-30 usage).
Calling
Approved rendering: તેડું
Transliteration: teḍũ
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Rejected alternatives: આહ્વાન
Original: κλῆσις
Category: Salvation
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Must convey a sovereign summons, not human-initiated seeking of a guru’s diksha. Hebrews 3:1; 5:4 (the high priest ‘called by God’).
Power Of God
Approved rendering: પરમેશ્વરનું સામર્થ્ય
Transliteration: Parmeśvarnũ Sāmarthya
Doctrine: Power of God for Salvation
Rejected alternatives: શક્તિ
Original: δύναμις (cf. Heb 1:3, ‘the word of his power’; 7:16)
Category: God
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Never શક્તિ (collides with Gujarat’s Shakti/mother-goddess devotional tradition, e.g. Ambaji). Hebrews 1:3 (‘the word of his power’); 7:16 (Christ’s indestructible life).
Providence
Approved rendering: પરમેશ્વરનું વિધાન
Transliteration: Parmeśvarnũ Vidhān
Doctrine: Providence
Rejected alternatives: નસીબ, કર્મનો નિયમ
Original: φέρων τὰ πάντα (cf. Heb 1:3, ‘upholding/carrying all things’)
Category: God
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Personal, purposive governance, not કર્મનો નિયમ. Hebrews 1:3 (‘upholding all things by the word of his power’) and undergirding the fatherly discipline of ch. 12.
Gospel
Approved rendering: સુવાર્તા
Transliteration: suvārtā
Doctrine: Gospel
Rejected alternatives: ખબર, શુભ સંદેશ
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Hebrews 4:2, 6: the ‘good news’ preached to but not believed by the wilderness generation — the same authoritative, single saving proclamation as in Romans, not generic good news.
Priest
Approved rendering: યાજક
Transliteration: yājak
Doctrine: Superiority of Christ over the Levitical Priesthood
Rejected alternatives: પુરોહિત
Original: ἱερεύς
Category: Priesthood
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. Established Gujarati Christian term; base for compound renderings (યાજકપણું, પ્રમુખ યાજક). Used of Levitical priests (7:14, 20-23) and of Melchizedek (7:1, 3) as a type of Christ.
Priesthood
Approved rendering: યાજકપણું
Transliteration: yājakpaṇũ
Doctrine: Superiority of Christ over the Levitical Priesthood
Original: ἱερωσύνη
Category: Priesthood
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. 7:12’s central argument: a change of priesthood (Levitical to Melchizedekian/Christ’s) necessarily entails a change of law/covenant. Consistency required across chs. 5, 7, 8; never mapped onto the Brahmin priestly caste structure.
Tabernacle
Approved rendering: મુલાકાત મંડપ
Transliteration: mulākāt maṇḍap
Doctrine: New Covenant versus the Old
Rejected alternatives: મંદિર, દેરાસર
Original: σκηνή
Category: Priesthood
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. Established Gujarati OT (Exodus) rendering. Never મંદિર or દેરાસર. A temporary, mobile, sacrificial structure superseded entirely by Christ (8:2, 5; 9:2-3, 6, 8, 11, 21), not an enduring temple to be venerated.
Holy Place
Approved rendering: પવિત્રસ્થાન
Transliteration: pavitrasthān
Doctrine: Access to God through Christ’s Blood
Original: τὰ ἅγια
Category: Priesthood
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. Built on TM પવિત્ર. The sanctuary/holy places, including by context the heavenly sanctuary Christ entered (9:8, 12, 24-25; 10:19; 13:11). Distinguish from the restricted ગર્ભગૃહ of a Hindu mandir or ગભારો of a Jain derasar — no priestly caste or ritual gate required for believers.
Holy Of Holies
Approved rendering: પરમ પવિત્રસ્થાન
Transliteration: param pavitrasthān
Doctrine: Access to God through Christ’s Blood
Original: ἅγια ἁγίων
Category: Priesthood
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. The innermost tabernacle chamber entered only once yearly by the high priest alone (9:3). Its extreme old-covenant restriction underscores by contrast the new, open access secured by Christ.
Mediator
Approved rendering: મધ્યસ્થ
Transliteration: madhyastha
Doctrine: Christ’s Mediation and Continuing Intercession
Rejected alternatives: ગુરુ, સંત મધ્યસ્થી
Original: μεσίτης
Category: Covenant
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. Built on TM મધ્યસ્થતા. Christ is mediator of the new covenant (8:6; 9:15; 12:24). Must not be confused with a Hindu/Jain intermediary saint, guru, or Tirthankara through whom devotees petition — unique, exclusive, completed once.
Blood
Approved rendering: રક્ત
Transliteration: rakta
Doctrine: Once-for-All Atoning Sacrifice
Original: αἷμα
Category: Salvation
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. Christ’s own sacrificial blood (9:12, 14, 18-22, 25; 10:19, 29; 12:24; 13:12, 20). Every occurrence must clarify this is unique, voluntary, self-offered, once-for-all blood ending the entire sacrificial system — not repeated ritual slaughter, and not a violation of ahimsa to morally recoil from. Mandatory theologian review.
Sacrifice
Approved rendering: બલિદાન
Transliteration: balidān
Doctrine: Once-for-All Atoning Sacrifice
Original: θυσία
Category: Salvation
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. Christ’s death is the one sacrifice to which every OT sacrifice pointed and none could equal (9:26; 10:1, 12; 13:15-16). બલિદાન is also commonly applied to Hindu yajna offerings; must be doctrinally anchored every time as unrepeatable, substitutionary, and effective, never one act among many in an ongoing devotional economy. At 13:15’s ‘sacrifice of praise,’ a translator note must clarify this metaphorical, non-atoning sense.
Offering
Approved rendering: અર્પણ / અર્પણ કરવું
Transliteration: arpaṇ / arpaṇ karavũ
Doctrine: Once-for-All Atoning Sacrifice
Original: προσφορά / προσφέρω
Category: Salvation
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. Christ offered himself, once (9:14, 25, 28; 10:10-14). અર્પણ overlaps with puja/arti offering vocabulary presented to a deity or Tirthankara image; must make explicit Christ offered not an external object but himself, once, effectually.
Better Superior
Approved rendering: ચઢિયાતું
Transliteration: caḍhiyātũ
Doctrine: Superiority of Christ over Angels, Moses, and the Levitical Priesthood
Original: κρείττων / κρείσσων
Category: Christology
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. Not itself doctrinally contested, but carries almost the entire ‘Superiority’ argument (~13 occurrences: 1:4; 6:9; 7:7, 19, 22; 8:6; 9:23; 10:34; 11:16, 35, 40; 12:24). Must be rendered with this SAME word every occurrence for the reader to perceive the sustained rhetorical pattern.
Inheritance
Approved rendering: વારસો
Transliteration: vārso
Doctrine: Adoption and Inheritance
Original: κληρονομία
Category: Salvation
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. The ‘eternal inheritance’ secured through the new covenant (9:15) and promised to the patriarchs (11:8). No direct structural parallel exists in Hindu/Jain frameworks — the concept must be built up rather than corrected against a false parallel.
Rest
Approved rendering: વિશ્રામ
Transliteration: viśrām
Doctrine: New Covenant versus the Old
Original: κατάπαυσις
Category: Salvation
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. A relational cessation from self-effort, entered by faith ‘today’ (3:11, 18; 4:1-11), not a post-mortem or post-cyclical liberation reached across lifetimes. Must be distinguished from Hindu/Jain notions of final liberation as rest achieved by the soul’s own effort. Mandatory theologian review.
Shrink Back
Approved rendering: પાછા હઠવું
Transliteration: pāchhā haṭhvũ
Doctrine: The Danger of Apostasy and Warning Passages
Original: ὑποστέλλω / ὑποστολή
Category: Apostasy
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. Cowardly retreat contrasted directly with persevering faith at 10:38-39 (quoting Habakkuk 2:4). Part of the controlled apostasy-warning vocabulary alongside 3:12 and 6:6; review together for consistent theological framing.
Once For All
Approved rendering: એક જ વાર (સદાને માટે)
Transliteration: ek ja vār (sadāne māṭe)
Doctrine: Once-for-All Atoning Sacrifice
Original: ἅπαξ / ἐφάπαξ
Category: Salvation
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. The single most doctrinally weight-bearing adverbial phrase of the core passage (9:12, 26, 27, 28; 10:10). Must be sharply distinguished from repeated Hindu yajna/puja cycles and from the incremental, self-performed austerities (tapa) by which a Jain practitioner sheds karma over many lifetimes. Contrast term: વારંવાર (‘many times,’ 9:25). Mandatory theologian review.
Perfect
Approved rendering: સંપૂર્ણ / સંપૂર્ણ કરવું
Transliteration: sampūrṇa / sampūrṇa karavũ
Doctrine: Christ as the Great High Priest
Original: τέλειος / τελειόω
Category: Christology
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. Of Christ, ‘made perfect’ through suffering-obedience to qualify for high priesthood (5:9; 7:28), not moral correction; of believers, maturity (5:14; 10:1, 14; 12:23) versus infancy. Must be distinguished from Jain kevalajñāna (the soul’s own attainment of perfect liberation through self-effort). Mandatory theologian review.
Conscience
Approved rendering: અંતઃકરણ
Transliteration: antaḥkaraṇ
Doctrine: Cleansing of the Conscience
Original: συνείδησις
Category: Salvation
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. A standing Hindu philosophical technical term (the ‘inner instrument’ of manas, buddhi, ahaṅkāra, citta), unavoidable as the standard Gujarati rendering, but every occurrence (9:9, 14; 10:2, 22) must be anchored to mean specifically the God-relational faculty of guilt cleansed by Christ’s blood, not purified through meditative discipline.
Eternal
Approved rendering: અનંત
Transliteration: ananta
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: સનાતન
Original: αἰώνιος
Category: God
NEW TERM — HEBREWS (cross-cutting). NEVER સનાતન — સનાતન ધર્મ is the self-designation of mainstream Hinduism, which would imply Christ’s work is one more expression of an eternal Hindu religious order. Describes Christ’s eternal Spirit (9:14), the eternal covenant (13:20), eternal redemption (9:12), and Christ’s eternality (13:8).
Draw Near
Approved rendering: પાસે આવવું / નજીક જવું
Transliteration: pāse āvavũ / najīk javũ
Doctrine: Access to God through Christ’s Blood
Original: προσέρχομαι
Category: Salvation
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. Believers’ direct, confident access to God through Christ (4:16; 7:25; 10:1, 22; 11:6; 12:18, 22), requiring no living priestly caste intermediary, ritual purification rite, or restricted sanctuary space — a sharp contrast with Hindu temple/Jain derasar access patterns often restricted by caste or priestly office. Mandatory theologian review.
Angel
Approved rendering: સ્વર્ગદૂત
Transliteration: svargadūt
Doctrine: Superiority of Christ over Angels
Rejected alternatives: દેવ
Original: ἄγγελος
Category: Angelology
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. NEVER દેવ (reserved for a Hindu deity/demigod). Angels are created, serving spirits, categorically beneath the Son (chs. 1-2), not minor pantheon deities. Mandatory theologian review at every occurrence in chs. 1-2.
Pioneer
Approved rendering: ઉદ્ધારનો કર્તા / આગેવાન
Transliteration: uddhārno kartā / āgevān
Doctrine: Christ as the Great High Priest
Original: ἀρχηγός
Category: Christology
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. Reuses TM ઉદ્ધાર. Christ personally goes ahead of and leads believers into the salvation he secures (2:10; 12:2, paired with ‘perfecter’). Distinguish this personal, present leadership from an ascetic founder-teacher (Tirthankara) who, having attained liberation, no longer leads or accompanies followers.
Discipline
Approved rendering: શિસ્ત
Transliteration: śist
Doctrine: Divine Discipline and Providence
Original: παιδεία
Category: Sanctification
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. Loving, purposive fatherly training toward holiness (12:5-11, quoting Prov 3:11-12). Must be sharply distinguished from impersonal karmic-consequence suffering (payback for past-life deeds), common in Hindu and Jain popular thought. Mandatory theologian review.
Sprinkling
Approved rendering: છાંટવું / છંટકાવ
Transliteration: chāṇṭavũ / chaṇṭkāv
Doctrine: Once-for-All Atoning Sacrifice
Original: ῥαντίζω / ῥαντισμός
Category: Salvation
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. Ritual blood application under the Law (9:13, 19, 21), echoed positively at 12:24 (‘sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than Abel’s’). Ritual sprinkling of water/sacred substances is a common devotional practice in Gujarat (Ganga-jal, abhishek); frame strictly as OT background now surpassed by Christ. Use identical rendering at 9:13/19/21 and 12:24.
Judgment
Approved rendering: ન્યાય
Transliteration: nyāy
Doctrine: Eschatological Judgment and Second Coming
Rejected alternatives: કર્મનો નિયમ
Original: κρίσις
Category: Eschatology
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. Builds on the ન્યાયી-root established for righteousness/justification. A personal divine verdict rendered after death (9:27) and the fearful prospect awaiting willful sin (10:27). Must be distinguished explicitly from કર્મનો નિયમ. Mandatory theologian review.
Second Appearing
Approved rendering: બીજી વાર દેખાશે
Transliteration: bījī vār dekhāśe
Doctrine: Eschatological Judgment and Second Coming
Original: ἐκ δευτέρου … ὀφθήσεται
Category: Eschatology
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. Christ’s future, personal, visible second appearing (9:28) — the seed text for the Second Coming. Must cohere visibly with the past/present/future appearing framework at 9:24, 26, 28.
Putting Away Of Sin
Approved rendering: પાપ દૂર કરવું
Transliteration: pāp dūr karavũ
Doctrine: Once-for-All Atoning Sacrifice
Original: ἀθέτησις
Category: Salvation
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. Reuses TM પાપ. Christ’s single sacrifice decisively and finally cancels sin’s claim (9:26). Needs a translator note distinguishing this decisive, one-time legal cancellation from the gradual, self-effected Jain karma-shedding process.
End Of The Ages
Approved rendering: જગતના અંતનો સમય
Transliteration: jagatnā antno samay
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Original: συντέλεια τῶν αἰώνων
Category: Eschatology
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. History’s decisive, climactic turning point at which Christ’s sacrifice occurred (9:26), a linear, one-time historical hinge. Directly confronts both the Hindu yuga-cycle and the Jain beginningless/endless wheel of cosmic ages. Mandatory theologian review.
Appointed Fixed Lot
Approved rendering: નિર્ધારિત છે
Transliteration: nirdhārit chhe
Doctrine: The Danger of Apostasy and Warning Passages
Rejected alternatives: નસીબ, નિયતિ
Original: ἀπόκειται
Category: Eschatology
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. Death and subsequent judgment are the fixed, appointed lot of every human being, once, not cyclically (9:27). Crucial to distinguish this single, linear appointment from the impersonal, repeating death-rebirth-death cycle governed by karma. Mandatory theologian review.
Destruction Ruin
Approved rendering: નાશ
Transliteration: nāś
Doctrine: The Danger of Apostasy and Warning Passages
Original: ἀπώλεια
Category: Eschatology
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. Eschatological ruin, the fate of those who shrink back rather than persevere in faith (10:39). Must be understood as a personal, final outcome determined by a personal God’s judgment, not an impersonal karmic descent to a lower rebirth.
Medium Risk Terms
Apostle
Approved rendering: પ્રેરિત
Transliteration: prerit
Doctrine: Apostleship
Rejected alternatives: ગુરુ, સંદેશવાહક
Original: ἀπόστολος
Category: Church
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Avoid ગુરુ. Hebrews 3:1 uniquely applies this title to Christ himself paired with High Priest (‘the Apostle and High Priest of our confession’) — flag this unusual double-title construction for native speaker review.
Intercession
Approved rendering: મધ્યસ્થતા
Transliteration: madhyasthatā
Doctrine: Prayer and Intercession
Original: ἐντυγχάνω
Category: Faith
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Hebrews 7:25: Christ ‘always lives to make intercession’ — his own, continuous, personal intercession requires no further human or ritual intermediary.
Israel
Approved rendering: ઇઝરાયલ
Transliteration: Izrāyal
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles
Original: Ἰσραήλ
Category: Covenant
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Established proper name form. Hebrews 8:8, 10 (Jeremiah 31 new covenant quotation); 11:22.
Peace
Approved rendering: શાંતિ
Transliteration: śānti
Doctrine: Peace with God
Rejected alternatives: મનની શાંતિ
Original: εἰρήνη
Category: Salvation
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Relational peace with God, not ahimsa-based inner tranquility. Hebrews 7:2 (Melchizedek, ‘king of peace’); 12:14; 13:20 (‘the God of peace’).
Church
Approved rendering: મંડળી
Transliteration: maṇḍaḷī
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Rejected alternatives: મંદિર, દેરાસર
Original: ἐκκλησία
Category: Church
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Never મંદિર or દેરાસર. Hebrews 2:12 (quoting Ps 22); 12:23 (‘the assembly of the firstborn’) — a joyful, open, new-covenant community, never caste-segregated or building-centered.
Kingdom Of God
Approved rendering: પરમેશ્વરનું રાજ્ય
Transliteration: Parmeśvarnũ Rājya
Doctrine: Kingdom Mission
Rejected alternatives: ઈશ્વરનું રાષ્ટ્ર
Original: βασιλεία
Category: Kingdom
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Hebrews 1:8 (‘your throne, O God’); 12:28 in its modified form અડગ રાજ્ય (‘unshakeable kingdom’) — God’s sovereign reign, not territorial/political.
David
Approved rendering: દાઉદ
Transliteration: Dāūd
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Hebrews 4:7 (‘through David he says, Today…’); 11:32. Established proper name form.
Melchizedek
Approved rendering: મલ્ખીસદેક
Transliteration: Malkhīsadek
Doctrine: Superiority of Christ over the Levitical Priesthood
Original: Μελχισέδεκ
Category: Priesthood
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. Proper name; transliterated. A priest-king (Gen 14) with no recorded genealogy or successor, typologically prefiguring Christ’s permanent, non-Levitical priesthood (chs. 5-7). Low linguistic risk, high doctrinal load — requires expository framing at first occurrence since Gujarati religious offices are all lineage-defined.
Heir
Approved rendering: વારસ
Transliteration: vāras
Doctrine: Adoption and Inheritance
Original: κληρονόμος
Category: Salvation
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. Christ is ‘heir of all things’ (1:2); believers become ‘heirs of salvation’ (1:14) and ‘heirs of the promise’ (6:17; 11:7). Ties directly to baseline adoption doctrine (દત્તકપણું).
Sabbath Rest
Approved rendering: સાબ્બાથ વિશ્રામ
Transliteration: sābbāth viśrām
Doctrine: New Covenant versus the Old
Original: σαββατισμός
Category: Salvation
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. A Sabbath-patterned rest still remaining for God’s people (4:9), a rare word possibly coined by the author. Carries the same theological caution as ‘rest’ above.
Boldness
Approved rendering: હિંમત
Transliteration: hiṃmat
Doctrine: Access to God through Christ’s Blood
Original: παρρησία
Category: Faith
NEW TERM — HEBREWS. Confident boldness in approaching God, a major pastoral theme (3:6; 4:16; 10:19, 35).
Forerunner
Approved rendering: અગ્રગામી
Transliteration: agragāmī
Doctrine: Christ as the Great High Priest

NEW TERM — HEBREWS. The cleansed conscience is free to serve the living God (9:14; 12:28). Avoid ભજવું/ભજન, saturated with Swaminarayan/Vaishnav devotional-singing tradition cultivating a chosen deity’s favor; સેવા preserves ‘service rendered’ without that merit-cultivating overlay.
