Core Glossary
Core Glossary — Colossians — English → Gujarati
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md across the full book of Colossians (Chapters 1–4), citing terms from every chapter. It is organized in two parts:
- Part A: Reused Baseline Terms — terms already fixed in the Romans
translation_memory.json/bible_term_registry.json. These renderings are carried forward exactly, without modification, per the hard rule that the baseline package is the language authority. - Part B: New Colossians-Specific Terms — terms not previously catalogued in the baseline, proposed here for addition to translation memory. Each entry lists risk tier and grounded reason, following the same Critical/High/Medium/Low convention as the baseline.
Risk tiers follow the baseline’s doctrine_risk_registry.json definitions: Critical (theologian review, every occurrence), High (theologian review), Medium (native speaker review), Low (automated review).

Part B — New Colossians-Specific Terms
| # | Term (English) | Original (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal / Semantic Note | Gujarati Rendering | Risk | Chapter(s) | Grounded Reason |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Image | εἰκών | eikōn | Visible manifestation of an invisible reality | સ્વરૂપ (svarūp) | Critical | 1:15, 3:10 | Collides with Vaishnav bhakti “svarūpa” theology (a deity’s particular assumed form, one among many); must be taught as Christ’s exact, exclusive, total disclosure of God, not one manifestation among possible others |
| 2 | Firstborn | πρωτότοκος | prōtotokos | Rank/inheritance-right term, not chronological-origin term | પ્રથમજનિત (prathamjanit) | Critical | 1:15, 1:18 | Literal “first-born” risks Arian-style misreading as Christ being the first created being rather than sovereign heir over creation |
| 3 | Creation | κτίσις | ktisis | The created cosmos, visible and invisible | સૃષ્ટિ (sṣṭi) | High | 1:15, 1:16, 1:23 | Embedded in Hindu cyclical cosmology (sṣṭi-sthiti-pralaya); must convey single, linear, purposeful creation |
| 4 | Thrones / Dominions / Rulers / Authorities | θρόνοι, κυριότητες, ἀρχαί, ἐξουσίαι | thronoi, kyriotētes, archai, exousiai | Ranked classes of spiritual power, angelic and demonic | સિંહાસનો / પ્રભુત્વો / અધિકારીઓ / સત્તાઓ | High | 1:16, 2:10, 2:15 | Risk of collision with Gujarat’s dense intermediary-spirit veneration culture (guardian deities, ancestral spirits, Jain celestial-being hierarchies); must be taught as created, subordinate, and defeated, not independent beings worthy of devotion |
| 5 | Hold together / Sustain | συνέστηκεν | synestēken | Christ’s personal, ongoing sustaining of creation’s coherence | ટકી રહે છે (ṭakī rahe che) | High | 1:17 | Risk of assimilation to Jain dharmāstikāya, the impersonal cosmic “medium of motion”; must convey personal, willed sustaining, not an impersonal cosmic principle |
| 6 | Head | κεφαλή | kephalē | Life-source AND ruling authority, simultaneously | શિર (śir) | Critical | 1:18, 2:10, 2:19 | Doctrinal center of “Christ as Head of the Church”; must retain both organic-life-source and governing-authority senses together |
| 7 | Body [of Christ/church] | σῶμα | sōma | The church as Christ’s organic body | શરીર (śarīr) | High | 1:18, 1:24, 2:19, 3:15 | Must not collapse into caste-based or guild-based corporate identity familiar in Gujarati social structures |
| 8 | Beginning/Source | ἀρχή | archē | Originating source, paired with resurrection | આરંભ (āraṃbh) | Medium-High | 1:18 | Risk of abstraction into an impersonal metaphysical “primal source” concept found in Hindu philosophical usage |
| 9 | Preeminent | πρωτεύων | prōteuōn | Holding unrivaled first place in everything | પ્રથમ સ્થાન ધરાવવો | High | 1:18 | Universality (“in everything”) must not be softened per baseline universality-preservation rule |
| 10 | Fullness | πλήρωμα | plērōma | The complete, undivided totality of deity | પરિપૂર્ણતા (paripūrṇatā) | Critical | 1:19, 2:9 | Counters false teaching’s likely claim that divine fullness is distributed across intermediary powers; the entire fullness resides in Christ alone |
| 11 | Dwell (permanently) | κατοικῆσαι | katoikēsai | Permanent residence, not temporary visitation | નિવાસ કરવો (nivās karavo) | High | 1:19 | Must not read as a temporary avatar-descent; permanence is essential |
| 12 | Reconcile | ἀποκαταλλάξαι | apokatallaxai | God’s initiating restoration of hostile creation to himself | સમાધાન કરવું (samādhān karavũ) | Critical | 1:20, 1:21-22 | Doctrinal center of “Reconciliation through the Cross”; must not collapse into generic cosmic-harmony concepts resonant in Hindu/Jain thought, nor into self-effort moral reform |
| 13 | Blood | αἷμα | haima | Christ’s actual, historical, physical death | રક્ત / લોહી (lohī) | Critical | 1:20 | Must remain concrete historical fact, not abstracted into symbolic “sacrifice” language |
| 14 | Cross | σταυρός | stauros | The specific instrument/event of Christ’s execution | ક્રુસ (krus) | Critical | 1:20, 2:14 | Established unambiguous loanword; Critical due to doctrinal weight of atonement, not lexical collision |
| 15 | Love (general) | ἀγάπη | agapē | Spirit-produced love among believers/toward God | પ્રેમ (prem) | Medium | 1:4, 1:8, 3:14, 3:19 | Overlaps with bhakti-devotional “prem” toward a chosen deity; must anchor to Spirit-fruit love, not devotional sentiment |
| 16 | Hope | ἐλπίς | elpis | Certain, promise-secured future expectation | આશા (āśā) | Medium | 1:5, 1:23, 1:27 | Must convey certainty grounded in God’s promise, not uncertain hope tied to karmic/rebirth frameworks |
| 17 | Knowledge / Full Knowledge | ἐπίγνωσις / γνῶσις | epignōsis / gnōsis | Spirit-given grasp of God’s will, given freely to all | જ્ઞાન (jñān) | Critical | 1:9, 1:10, 1:28, 2:2-3, 3:10 | Collides directly with Hindu jñāna-yoga and especially Jain kevaljñān (self-attained omniscience through ascetic effort); must be taught as gift, not elite self-earned enlightenment — central to anti-syncretism doctrine |
| 18 | Wisdom | σοφία | sophia | Applied spiritual insight/discernment | ડહાપણ (ḍahāpaṇ) | Medium | 1:9, 1:28, 2:3, 2:23, 3:16, 4:5 | Deliberately chosen as everyday term (not પ્રજ્ઞા) to avoid Jain/Buddhist technical “transcendent insight” associations |
| 19 | Understanding | σύνεσις | synesis | Comprehension/insight | સમજ (samaj) | Low | 1:9, 2:2 | Standard, low ambiguity |
| 20 | Inheritance | κληρονομία | klēronomia | Full inheritance-right, connected to adoption | વારસો (vārso) | Medium | 1:12, 3:24 | Connects to baseline adoption doctrine (દત્તકપણું); must convey full, not partial, right |
| 21 | Redemption | ἀπολύτρωσις | apolytrōsis | Deliverance accomplished at a cost/ransom-price | ઉદ્ધાર (reuse of baseline salvation term, contextually) | Critical | 1:14 | Must NEVER use મોક્ષ/મુક્તિ despite etymological “ransom/release” sense; baseline salvation prohibition is absolute |
| 22 | Flesh / Body of Flesh | σάρξ / σῶμα τῆς σαρκός | sarx / sōma tēs sarkos | Christ’s genuine physical human body | દેહ (deh) | Critical | 1:22, 1:24, 2:11 | Anchors Humanity-of-Christ doctrine; must not read as illusory appearance or a temporary vehicle akin to transmigration frameworks |
| 23 | Mystery | μυστήριον | mystērion | God’s plan, formerly hidden, now openly revealed to all | રહસ્ય (rahasya) | High | 1:26-27, 2:2, 4:3 | Risk of being read as exclusive esoteric knowledge (as in tantric/occult “rahasya” traditions); must stress the mystery is now OPENLY proclaimed to all, not reserved for initiates |
| 24 | Sufferings [apostolic] | πάθημα | pathēma | Ongoing missionary/apostolic affliction, not atonement | દુઃખો / વેદનાઓ | High | 1:24 | Must never imply Christ’s atoning death was insufficient; distinct from atonement-suffering |
| 25 | Stewardship | οἰκονομία | oikonomia | Administrative task entrusted by God | કારભાર (kārbhār) | Low | 1:25 | Standard term |
| 26 | Tradition | παράδοσις | paradosis | Merely human, non-revealed teaching (negative sense here) | પરંપરા (paramparā) | Medium | 2:8 | Everyday neutral word; context must supply Paul’s negative valence |
| 27 | Philosophy | φιλοσοφία | philosophia | The specific syncretistic human system troubling Colossae | તત્વજ્ઞાન (tattvajñāna) | Medium | 2:8 | Overlaps with Jain/Hindu tattva-category metaphysics; must clarify it is any human system displacing Christ’s sufficiency, not reasoned thought as such |
| 28 | Elemental Spirits / Elemental Principles | στοιχεῖα (τοῦ κόσμου) | stoicheia (tou kosmou) | Obsolete rudimentary religious/spiritual “starter rules” | જગતના તત્વો (jagatnā tattvo) | High | 2:8, 2:20 | Must be distinguished from the pañca-mahābhūta (five-elements) framework foundational to Hindu/Jain cosmology, widely known in Gujarati culture |
| 29 | Fullness of Deity (bodily) | πλήρωμα τῆς θεότητος σωματικῶς | plērōma tēs theotētos sōmatikōs | Christ’s complete, essential divine nature, permanently embodied | પરમેશ્વરત્વ (Parmeśvartva) — NEW COINAGE | Critical | 2:9 | Built on baseline’s established પરમેશ્વર (never ઈશ્વર or ભગવાન); single strongest deity-of-Christ statement in the letter — requires addition to translation memory |
| 30 | Bodily | σωματικῶς | sōmatikōs | Real, physical embodiment (not partial/temporary) | દેહરૂપે (dehrūpe) | Critical | 2:9 | Tied to baseline incarnation term દેહધારણ; must never suggest partial or temporary embodiment |
| 31 | Circumcision | περιτομή | peritomē | Physical rite; here, its spiritual fulfillment in Christ | સુન્નત (sunnat) | Medium | 2:11 | Standard Gujarati Bible term; must clarify Colossians speaks of a spiritual reality accomplished by Christ, not a call to the physical rite |
| 32 | Record of Debt / Bond | χειρόγραφον | cheirographon | Legal debt-document canceled at the cross | ઋણપત્ર (ṛṇapatra) | Medium-High | 2:14 | Must convey a debt canceled wholly by Christ’s act, not paid off through the debtor’s own effort — contrasts with karma-ledger and Jain karmic-shedding frameworks |
| 33 | Decrees / Legal Demands | δόγμα | dogma | Specific legal charges/requirements, distinct from Torah as a whole | નિયમો / હુકમો | Medium | 2:14, 2:20 | Distinguish from baseline’s νόμος (નિયમશાસ્ત્ર) |
| 34 | Disarmed / Triumphed Over | ἀπεκδυσάμενος / θριαμβεύσας | apekdysamenos / thriambeusas | Christ’s decisive, public defeat of hostile spiritual powers | નિઃશસ્ત્ર કર્યા / વિજય મેળવ્યો | High | 2:15 | Powerful apologetic against fear of/obligation to appease guardian or ancestral spirits, a live folk-religious practice in Gujarat |
| 35 | Shadow / Substance | σκιά / σῶμα | skia / sōma | OT observances as preview; Christ as the reality itself | છાયા / વાસ્તવિકતા | Medium | 2:17 | Distinct sōma-sense from #7 above; low collision risk but doctrinally significant |
| 36 | Worship of Angels | θρησκεία τῶν ἀγγέλων | thrēskeia tōn angelōn | Veneration of angelic intermediaries, condemned | દૂતોની પૂજા | High | 2:18 | પૂજા deliberately signals forbidden ritual devotion, given Gujarat’s dense culture of veneration toward minor deities/guardian spirits/celestial beings |
| 37 | Humility (false, ascetic sense) | ταπεινοφροσύνη | tapeinophrosynē | Performative self-abasement to appear spiritually impressive | નમ્રતા (namratā) | High | 2:18, 2:23 | Same word later denotes a genuine Christian virtue (3:12, Medium/Low in that sense); the ch. 2 sense closely parallels Jain ascetic tapa practice, which Paul directly critiques |
| 38 | Severity to the Body | ἀφειδία σώματος | apheidia sōmatos | Deliberate bodily austerity/mortification | શરીર પ્રત્યેની કઠોરતા | High | 2:23 | Direct parallel to Jain kāyakleśa (bodily mortification); Paul states this has no power against sin |
| 39 | Self-Made Religion | ἐθελοθρησκία | ethelothrēskia | Impressive-looking, human-devised religious system | સ્વરચિત ધર્માચરણ | High | 2:23 | Paul’s own category for exactly the self-effort religious systems (Hindu vrata/tapasya, Jain ascetic discipline) already flagged elsewhere in the baseline as grace/sanctification collision risks |
| 40 | Raised With [Christ] | συνηγέρθητε | synēgerthēte | Believer’s co-participation in Christ’s own resurrection | ખ્રિસ્તની સાથે ઉઠાડવામાં આવ્યા (reuse પુનરુત્થાન) | Critical | 2:12, 3:1 | Anchor term for “Union with Christ”; must not be softened to a moral “new start,” nor confused with cyclical rebirth |
| 41 | Hidden [with Christ] | κρύπτω | kryptō | Believer’s life presently secure though unseen | છુપાયેલું (chupāyelũ) | Medium | 3:3 | Positive security, distinct from the negative “exclusive-secret-knowledge” risk flagged for μυστήριον in ch. 2 |
| 42 | Old Self | παλαιὸς ἄνθρωπος | palaios anthrōpos | Former, unregenerate identity, decisively put off | જૂનો માણસ (jūno māṇas) | High | 3:9 | Anchors “Putting Off the Old Self”; must not read as gradual self-improvement echoing Hindu/Jain karma-shedding effort |
| 43 | New Self | νέος / καινὸς ἄνθρωπος | neos / kainos anthrōpos | Regenerated identity, being progressively renewed | નવો માણસ (navo māṇas) | High | 3:10 | Anchors “Putting On the New Self” |
| 44 | Being Renewed | ἀνακαινούμενον | anakainoumenon | Ongoing Spirit-worked renewal process | નવીકરણ પામવો | Medium | 3:10 | Connects to sanctification (baseline પવિત્રીકરણ) |
| 45 | Put Off / Put On | ἀπεκδυσάμενοι / ἐνδυσάμενοι | apekdysamenoi / endysamenoi | Clothing-metaphor for decisive identity-change | ઉતારવું / પહેરવું | High | 2:11, 3:9, 3:12 | Governing metaphor for old-self/new-self doctrine |
| 46 | Idolatry | εἰδωλολατρία | eidōlolatria | Worship of images; extended to any disordered ultimate devotion | મૂર્તિપૂજા (mūrtipūjā) | High | 3:5 | Standard, highly visible Gujarati word for a normalized Hindu/Jain devotional practice; extension to covetousness must not soften condemnation of literal idol-worship |
| 47 | Submit | ὑποτάσσεσθε | hypotassesthe | Voluntary ordering of oneself under another, “as fitting in the Lord” | આધીન થવું (ādhīn thavũ) | High | 3:18 | Anchors “Household Codes”; must be held with reciprocal husband-duty and Christ-modeled framing, not raw cultural patriarchal subordination |
| 48 | Master [human, slave-owner] | κύριος (human referent) | kyrios | Same Greek word as “Lord,” here applied to a human owner | શેઠ / માલિક (śeṭh / mālik) | High | 3:22, 4:1 | CRITICAL DISAMBIGUATION: must NEVER be rendered પ્રભુ, which is reserved exclusively for Christ’s divine Lordship in the baseline; Paul’s wordplay (serving masters = serving Christ) must be taught at clause level, not through lexical overlap |
| 49 | Slave / Bondservant | δοῦλος | doulos | First-century social-institution referent in this passage | દાસ (dās) | Medium | 3:22, 4:1 | Note historical institution addressed; avoid implying endorsement of caste-based hereditary servitude in application |
| 50 | Partiality | προσωπολημψία | prosōpolēmpsia | Favoritism/unjust discrimination | પક્ષપાત (pakṣapāt) | Low | 3:25 | Standard, low risk |
| 51 | Salt [speech metaphor] | ἅλας | halas | Gracious, discerning speech | મીઠું (mīṭhũ) | Low | 4:6 | Standard metaphor, low risk |
Consistency Notes for Phase 2
- New Critical-risk coinage (
Parmeśvartva, item #29) and the human-master disambiguation (item #48) are the two most urgent items to formally add to an updatedtranslation_memory.jsonbefore any Phase 2 segment translation begins, since both involve either a wholly new term or a direct risk of contaminating an existing Critical baseline term (પ્રભુ). - Where the same Greek word carries two senses under different theological valence in this book (κύριος: divine Lord vs. human master; ταπεινοφροσύνη: false ascetic humility vs. genuine Christian virtue; σῶμα: church-body vs. shadow’s “substance”), Phase 2 segment translation must resolve sense BEFORE applying glossary lookup, and the resolved sense must be recorded in the segment cache.
- All Part A terms must be pulled unmodified from the existing baseline
translation_memory.json; no new entry should be created for them even though they recur in Colossians. - Chapter 4 introduced no new theological vocabulary; this has been explicitly recorded rather than silently omitted, per full-book coverage mandate.
Critical Risk Terms
Grace
Approved rendering: કૃપા
Transliteration: kṛpā
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: મહેરબાની, કર્મફળ, પુણ્ય, નિર્જરા
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly without modification. In Colossians occurs at 1:2, 1:6, 4:6, 4:18; risk sharpened by chapter 2’s explicit critique of ascetic self-effort systems (2:23), which makes the unearned-favor contrast especially load-bearing.
Son Of God
Approved rendering: પરમેશ્વરનો પુત્ર
Transliteration: Parmeśvarno Putra
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: દેવપુરુષ, અવતારી પુરુષ
Original: υἱὸς τῆς ἀγάπης αὐτοῦ / υἱὸς θεοῦ
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly without modification. Colossians 1:13 qualifies with ‘beloved’ (પ્રિય); the Christ-hymn of 1:15-20 assumes this Sonship throughout without restating the phrase.
Resurrection
Approved rendering: પુનરુત્થાન
Transliteration: punarutthān
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Rejected alternatives: પુનર્જન્મ, ફરી અવતરવું
Original: ἀνάστασις / συνηγέρθητε
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly without modification. CRITICAL: NEVER પુનર્જન્મ. In Colossians anchors 1:18 (firstborn from the dead) and underlies the compound ‘raised with Christ’ at 2:12 and 3:1 (see raised_with_christ entry, Part B).
Incarnation
Approved rendering: દેહધારણ
Transliteration: dehdhāraṇ
Doctrine: Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: અવતાર
Original: κατοικῆσαι / σωματικῶς
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly without modification. CRITICAL: NEVER અવતાર. In Colossians underlies 1:19’s ‘dwell’ and 2:9’s ‘bodily’ language — see dwell and bodily entries, Part B.
Lord
Approved rendering: પ્રભુ
Transliteration: prabhu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: સ્વામી, તીર્થંકર
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly without modification. CRITICAL DISAMBIGUATION FOR THIS BOOK: κύριος is ALSO applied in Colossians to a human slave-owning master (3:22, 4:1). That human referent must NEVER use પ્રભુ — see master_human entry, Part B. પ્રભુ remains reserved exclusively for Christ (1:3, 1:10, 3:17-18, 3:23-24, 4:1 [of Christ], 4:7).
God
Approved rendering: પરમેશ્વર
Transliteration: Parmeśvar
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ઈશ્વર, ભગવાન
Original: θεός
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly without modification. CRITICAL: NEVER ભગવાન or ઈશ્વર. Root for the new Colossians coinage પરમેશ્વરત્વ (2:9) — see fullness_of_deity_bodily entry, Part B.
Jesus
Approved rendering: ઈસુ
Transliteration: Īsu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ઈસા
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly without modification. Used throughout Colossians.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: પવિત્ર આત્મા
Transliteration: Pavitra Ātmā
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: પરમાત્મા, બ્રહ્મ
Original: πνεῦμα
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly without modification. Occurs at Colossians 1:8 (‘love in the Spirit’).
Salvation
Approved rendering: ઉદ્ધાર
Transliteration: uddhār
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: મોક્ષ, મુક્તિ, કેવલજ્ઞાન, સિદ્ધત્વ
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly without modification. CRITICAL: never મોક્ષ, મુક્તિ, કેવલજ્ઞાન, or સિદ્ધત્વ. This underlying salvation term is the required contextual rendering for Colossians 1:14’s ἀπολύτρωσις (‘redemption’) — see redemption entry, Part B.
Christ
Approved rendering: ખ્રિસ્ત
Transliteration: Khrist
Doctrine: Christology (General)
Original: Χριστός
Category: Christology
NEW registry entry for the Colossians curriculum (the Romans baseline used મસીહા for Messiah and પ્રભુ/ઈસુ for Lord/Jesus but had no separate ‘Christ’ entry). Established Gujarati Christian transliteration, distinct from OT-oriented મસીહા. Must not be softened to a generic honorific given the letter’s dense concentration of ‘in Christ’/‘Christ Jesus’ phrases and its use in the Christ-hymn (1:15-20).
Image
Approved rendering: સ્વરૂપ
Transliteration: svarūp
Doctrine: Supremacy of Christ over Creation / Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: અવતાર, રૂપ, પ્રતિમા
Original: εἰκών
Category: Christology
CRITICAL: સ્વરૂપ collides with Gujarat’s dominant Vaishnav bhakti tradition (Dwarka), where svarūpa names one particular assumed form of a deity among many possible forms/avatars. Every occurrence (1:15, 3:10) must make explicit that Christ is God’s exact, exclusive, total disclosure — not one manifestation among options. NEVER અવતાર (baseline incarnation prohibition applies with equal force here).
Firstborn
Approved rendering: પ્રથમજનિત
Transliteration: prathamjanit
Doctrine: Supremacy of Christ over Creation
Rejected alternatives: પ્રથમ ઉત્પન્ન થયેલ
Original: πρωτότοκος
Category: Christology
CRITICAL: literal ‘first-born-ness’ risks an Arian-style misreading (also the documented Jehovah’s Witnesses New World Translation error) placing Christ within the created order as its first member. Every occurrence (1:15, 1:18) requires the surrounding clause to read as genitive of rule/inheritance (‘sovereign heir over’), never partitive membership (‘first among’).
Head
Approved rendering: શિર
Transliteration: śir
Doctrine: Christ as Head of the Church
Rejected alternatives: મુખ્ય અધિકારી
Original: κεφαλή
Category: Church
CRITICAL: must retain BOTH senses simultaneously at every occurrence — life-giving source AND governing authority (1:18, 2:10, 2:19). A purely administrative reading (‘chief officer’) loses the organic life-source sense essential to the body metaphor; a purely organic reading loses Christ’s authority.
Fullness
Approved rendering: પરિપૂર્ણતા
Transliteration: paripūrṇatā
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: પૂર્ણતા, સંપૂર્ણતા
Original: πλήρωμα
Category: Christology
CRITICAL: the entire, undivided fullness of deity resides in Christ alone (1:19, 2:9), directly countering the false teachers’ likely claim that divine fullness is distributed across a hierarchy of intermediary powers. Require the clause ‘સંપૂર્ણ પરિપૂર્ણતા ખ્રિસ્તમાં જ’ (the entire fullness in Christ alone) rather than ‘a fullness.‘
Reconcile
Approved rendering: સમાધાન કરવું
Transliteration: samādhān karavũ
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Rejected alternatives: સંતુલન સ્થાપવું, સ્વ-પ્રયત્નથી સુધારો
Original: ἀποκαταλλάξαι
Category: Salvation
CRITICAL: God’s own initiating act, through Christ’s death, to restore hostile creation to right relationship with himself (1:20-22). Must never be taught as mutual negotiation or the believer’s own self-effort at moral reform; must not collapse into a generalized ‘harmony/balance’ concept resonant with Hindu/Jain cosmic-equilibrium thought. God must remain the grammatical and theological subject/agent in every occurrence.
Blood
Approved rendering: રક્ત / લોહી
Transliteration: rakta / lohī
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Rejected alternatives: બલિદાન (as sole rendering)
Original: αἷμα
Category: Salvation
Christ’s actual, historical, physical death (1:20) as the price and means of cosmic reconciliation. Must remain concrete historical fact, never abstracted into a metaphor for ‘sacrifice’ in general.
Cross
Approved rendering: ક્રુસ
Transliteration: krus
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Original: σταυρός
Category: Salvation
Established, unambiguous Gujarati Christian loanword (1:20, 2:14). Critical due to the doctrinal weight of atonement, not lexical collision.
Knowledge
Approved rendering: જ્ઞાન
Transliteration: jñān
Doctrine: Christian Growth in Knowledge and Wisdom
Rejected alternatives: પ્રજ્ઞા, કેવલજ્ઞાન, વિદ્યા
Original: ἐπίγνωσις / γνῶσις
Category: Sanctification
CRITICAL: collides directly with Hindu jñāna-yoga and, more sharply, Jain kevaljñān — the self-attained, ascetic-effort omniscience of a liberated soul reached with no divine giver. Every occurrence (1:9-10, 1:28, 2:2-3, 3:10) must be taught as a Spirit-given gift available to every believer, the direct opposite of an elite, self-earned enlightenment. Pair with ‘given’ framing (આપવામાં આવેલું જ્ઞાન) wherever the segment allows.
Redemption
Approved rendering: ઉદ્ધાર
Transliteration: uddhār
Doctrine: Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins
Rejected alternatives: મોક્ષ, મુક્તિ
Original: ἀπολύτρωσις
Category: Salvation
CRITICAL: ἀπολύτρωσις (1:14), in apposition with ‘forgiveness of sins.’ Must NEVER be rendered with મોક્ષ or મુક્તિ despite the etymological ransom/release sense superficially resembling મુક્તિ’s liberation sense. Render contextually with the baseline salvation term ઉદ્ધાર; the baseline prohibition is absolute without exception.
Flesh
Approved rendering: દેહ
Transliteration: deh
Doctrine: Humanity of Christ
Original: σάρξ / σῶμα τῆς σαρκός
Category: Christology
Christ’s genuine, physical human body, in which reconciliation was accomplished (1:22, 1:24, 2:11). Must not read as an illusory appearance or a temporary vehicle discarded as in transmigration frameworks.
Fullness Of Deity Bodily
Approved rendering: પરમેશ્વરત્વ
Transliteration: Parmeśvartva
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ઈશ્વરત્વ, ભગવત્તા, દિવ્યતા (as mere ‘divine quality’)
Original: πλήρωμα τῆς θεότητος σωματικῶς
Category: Christology
NEW COINAGE, highest-priority Critical entry in this package: the complete, essential nature of God himself, permanently united to Christ’s human body (2:9) — the letter’s single strongest deity-of-Christ statement. Built exclusively on the baseline’s already-vetted પરમેશ્વર root plus the abstract suffix -ત્વ. Must NEVER be built from ઈશ્વર or ભગવાન. Must never be weakened to a mere ‘divine quality/attribute’ sense — this is the documented Jehovah’s Witnesses New World Translation error at this exact verse (θεότητος rendered ‘the divine quality’ rather than ‘deity/Godhead’). Must be formally loaded into Phase 2 translation memory before any segment touching Colossians 2:9 is processed.
Bodily
Approved rendering: દેહરૂપે
Transliteration: dehrūpe
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Original: σωματικῶς
Category: Christology
God’s fullness dwelling in Christ in a real, physical human body, not abstractly or symbolically (2:9). Tied directly to baseline’s incarnation term દેહધારણ; must never suggest a temporary or partial embodiment.
Raised With Christ
Approved rendering: ખ્રિસ્તની સાથે ઉઠાડવામાં આવ્યા
Transliteration: Khristnī sāthe uṭhāḍavāmāṅ āvyā
Doctrine: Union with Christ (Died and Raised With Him)
Rejected alternatives: નવો આરંભ કરવો (mere ‘fresh start’ phrasing)
Original: συνηγέρθητε
Category: Christology
CRITICAL: believers’ co-participation in Christ’s own historical resurrection, already accomplished positionally (2:12, 3:1). Must never be softened to a merely moral/inspirational ‘new start,’ and must not be confused with cyclical rebirth. Always construct this compound around the baseline પુનરુત્થાન root; never introduce a new verb root for ‘raised’ in this doctrine; retain ‘તેની સાથે’ (with him) in every instance to preserve the union sense.
High Risk Terms
Gospel
Approved rendering: સુવાર્તા
Transliteration: suvārtā
Doctrine: Gospel
Rejected alternatives: ખબર, શુભ સંદેશ
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly without modification. In Colossians occurs at 1:5-6, 1:23, 1:28, sharpened by the letter’s direct polemic against a rival ‘philosophy’ (2:8) — the gospel remains the one specific historical proclamation, not one of several competing paths.
Faith
Approved rendering: વિશ્વાસ
Transliteration: viśvāsa
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: શ્રદ્ધા, ભક્તિ
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly without modification. In Colossians occurs at 1:4, 1:23, 2:5, 2:7, 2:12.
Holy
Approved rendering: પવિત્ર
Transliteration: pavitra
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: શુદ્ધ
Original: ἅγιος
Category: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly without modification. Occurs at Colossians 1:22, 3:12.
Saints
Approved rendering: પવિત્ર જનો
Transliteration: pavitra jano
Doctrine: Sainthood
Rejected alternatives: સંતો, મુનિ
Original: ἅγιοι
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly without modification. Occurs at Colossians 1:2, 1:4, 1:26.
Father
Approved rendering: પિતા
Transliteration: Pitā
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: સૃષ્ટિકર્તા
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly without modification. Occurs at Colossians 1:3, 1:12, 3:17.
Power Of God
Approved rendering: પરમેશ્વરનું સામર્થ્ય
Transliteration: Parmeśvarnũ Sāmarthya
Doctrine: Power of God for Salvation
Rejected alternatives: શક્તિ
Original: δύναμις
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly without modification. NEVER શક્તિ. In Colossians occurs at 1:11 and 1:29 as સામર્થ્ય describing God’s strength at work in believers.
Election
Approved rendering: પરમેશ્વરની પસંદગી
Transliteration: Parmeśvarnī Pasandagī
Doctrine: Effectual Calling
Rejected alternatives: નસીબ, નિયતિ, કર્મ-ફળ
Original: ἐκλεκτοί
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly without modification. Occurs at Colossians 3:12 (‘God’s chosen ones,’ ἐκλεκτοί).
Creation
Approved rendering: સૃષ્ટિ
Transliteration: sṣṭi
Doctrine: Supremacy of Christ over Creation
Original: κτίσις
Category: Creation
સૃષ્ટિ is standard but deeply embedded in Hindu cyclical cosmology (sṣṭi-sthiti-pralaya). Must convey a single, linear, purposeful creation by the one true God through Christ (1:15, 1:16, 1:23), not a recurring cosmic cycle.
Spiritual Powers
Approved rendering: સિંહાસનો / પ્રભુત્વો / અધિકારીઓ / સત્તાઓ
Transliteration: sinhāsano / prabhutvo / adhikārīo / sattāo
Doctrine: Defeat of Spiritual Powers
Original: θρόνοι, κυριότητες, ἀρχαί, ἐξουσίαι
Category: Creation
Ranked classes of angelic/demonic spiritual power (1:16, 2:10, 2:15). Must be taught as created, subordinate, and already defeated, never as independent beings meriting appeasement — a live risk given Gujarat’s guardian-deity (kshetrapal), ancestral-spirit, and Jain celestial-being (vyantara/jyotiṣka/vaimānika) veneration culture. પ્રભુત્વ shares the root પ્રભુ (reserved for Christ’s Lordship); must be explained so these powers are not inferred to share Christ’s rank.
Hold Together
Approved rendering: ટકી રહે છે
Transliteration: ṭakī rahe che
Doctrine: Supremacy of Christ over Creation
Original: συνέστηκεν
Category: Creation
Must convey Christ’s personal, willed, ongoing sustaining of creation’s coherence (1:17), sharply distinguished from the Jain dharmāstikāya, an impersonal substance that mechanically ‘enables motion’ through the universe — the same risk baseline flags for νόμος/dharma.
Body Of Christ
Approved rendering: શરીર
Transliteration: śarīr
Doctrine: Christ as Head of the Church
Original: σῶμα
Category: Church
The church as Christ’s own organic body, united to him as head (1:18, 1:24, 2:19, 3:15). Must not collapse into caste-based (jāti), guild-based, or business-community corporate identity familiar in Gujarati social structures.
Beginning
Approved rendering: આરંભ
Transliteration: āraṃbh
Doctrine: Christ as Head of the Church
Rejected alternatives: આદિ-તત્વ
Original: ἀρχή
Category: Christology
Christ as the church’s originating source, paired with his resurrection as firstborn from the dead (1:18). Must not be abstracted into an impersonal metaphysical ‘primal source’ (ādi/mūla-tattva) concept found in Hindu philosophical usage; keep the personal, historical resurrection anchor attached in-clause.
Preeminent
Approved rendering: સર્વમાં પ્રથમ સ્થાન ધરાવવો
Transliteration: sarvamāṅ prathama sthān dharāvavo
Doctrine: Preeminence and Sufficiency of Christ
Rejected alternatives: મહત્વનું સ્થાન ધરાવવો
Original: πρωτεύων
Category: Christology
Must not be softened to ‘an important place’ or ‘a leading place’ (1:18); the universality (‘in everything,’ ἐν πᾶσιν) must be retained per the baseline universality-preservation rule.
Dwell
Approved rendering: નિવાસ કરવો
Transliteration: nivās karavo
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: મુલાકાત લેવી
Original: κατοικῆσαι
Category: Christology
Must convey permanent residence (1:19), not temporary visitation, distinguishing this from a temporary avatar-descent.
Mystery
Approved rendering: રહસ્ય
Transliteration: rahasya
Doctrine: Mystery of the Gospel Revealed
Rejected alternatives: ગુપ્ત જ્ઞાન, ગૂઢ વિદ્યા
Original: μυστήριον
Category: False Teaching
God’s plan, formerly hidden, now openly revealed to all the saints (1:26-27, 2:2, 4:3). Risk of being read as exclusive esoteric knowledge (tantric/occult ‘rahasya’ usage current in Gujarati religious vocabulary). Must stress the mystery is now OPENLY proclaimed to all, not reserved for initiates — require the clause ‘હવે સર્વ પવિત્ર જનોને પ્રગટ કરવામાં આવ્યું છે’ at every occurrence.
Sufferings
Approved rendering: દુઃખો / વેદનાઓ
Transliteration: duḥkho / vedanāo
Doctrine: Apostolic Suffering and Ministry
Original: πάθημα
Category: Ministry
Paul’s ongoing apostolic/missionary affliction in gospel ministry (1:24), not atoning suffering. Must never imply Christ’s atoning death was insufficient or incomplete; this is apostolic/missionary suffering, categorically distinct from atonement.
Elemental Spirits
Approved rendering: જગતના તત્વો
Transliteration: jagatnā tattvo
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Rejected alternatives: પંચમહાભૂત
Original: στοιχεῖα (τοῦ κόσμου)
Category: False Teaching
The rudimentary, now-obsolete religious/spiritual ‘starter rules’ of pre-Christ existence (2:8, 2:20). Must be explicitly distinguished from the pañca-mahābhūta (five elements: earth, water, fire, air, ether) framework foundational to Hindu and Jain cosmology, widely known in Gujarati popular religious culture. Paul’s target is obsolete religious observance, not physical elements.
Record Of Debt
Approved rendering: ઋણપત્ર
Transliteration: ṛṇapatra
Doctrine: Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins
Rejected alternatives: કર્મનું ખાતું
Original: χειρόγραφον
Category: Salvation
The legal debt-bond of guilt standing against humanity, canceled and nailed to the cross (2:14). Must be taught as a debt canceled entirely by Christ’s finished act, not paid off gradually through the debtor’s own moral effort — standing in sharp contrast to a Hindu karma-ledger or Jain karmic-matter-shedding framework. NEVER કર્મનું ખાતું.
Disarmed And Triumphed
Approved rendering: નિઃશસ્ત્ર કર્યા / વિજય મેળવ્યો
Transliteration: niḥśastra karyā / vijay meḷvyo
Doctrine: Defeat of Spiritual Powers
Original: ἀπεκδυσάμενος / θριαμβεύσας
Category: Spiritual Powers
Christ’s decisive, public defeat and humiliation of the spiritual powers of 1:16, displayed as in a Roman triumphal procession (2:15). A uniquely powerful apologetic for Gujarati hearers who may fear or feel obligated to appease guardian spirits, ancestral spirits, or local deities (a live practice through folk-Hindu bhuva/exorcist mediators): Christ has already publicly triumphed; believers owe such powers no further deference or ritual.
Worship Of Angels
Approved rendering: દૂતોની પૂજા
Transliteration: dūtonī pūjā
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Rejected alternatives: દૂતોની આરાધના, દૂતોનું વંદન
Original: θρησκεία τῶν ἀγγέλων
Category: False Teaching
Ritual veneration of angelic intermediaries promoted by the false teachers as a supplement to devotion to Christ (2:18). પૂજા is deliberately used (not a softer ‘reverence’ word) because it names the specific act of ritual devotional worship offered to a being other than God — directly relevant given Gujarat’s dense culture of venerating minor deities, guardian spirits, and (among Jains) celestial beings. Must be taught as forbidden outright, not a lesser-but-acceptable supplementary devotion.
Humility False Asceticism
Approved rendering: નમ્રતા
Transliteration: namratā
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Original: ταπεινοφροσύνη
Category: False Teaching
Performative, showy self-abasement used by the false teachers to appear spiritually impressive (2:18, 2:23) — the SAME Gujarati word as the genuine positive virtue at 3:12 (see humility_genuine entry below). The false, ascetic sense here closely parallels the Jain practice of deliberate bodily austerity (tapa) pursued for spiritual advancement. Sense must be resolved by context BEFORE glossary lookup, and recorded in the segment cache.
Severity To Body
Approved rendering: શરીર પ્રત્યેની કઠોરતા
Transliteration: śarīr pratyenī kaṭhoratā
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Original: ἀφειδία σώματος
Category: False Teaching
Deliberate bodily austerity/self-mortification promoted by the false teachers as spiritually valuable (2:23). Direct parallel to Jain kāyakleśa (bodily mortification); Paul explicitly states such self-imposed severity ‘has no value against the indulgence of the flesh’ — a uniquely direct, textually-grounded engagement with a live Gujarati ascetic practice.
Self Made Religion
Approved rendering: સ્વરચિત ધર્માચરણ
Transliteration: svaracit dharmācaraṇ
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Original: ἐθελοθρησκία
Category: False Teaching
Paul’s summary verdict on the whole false-teaching complex (angel-worship, ascetic rules, dietary/calendar regulations) — an impressive-looking, entirely human-devised religious system with no power over sin (2:23). Functions as Paul’s own explicit category for the self-directed, effort-based spiritual systems found across popular Hindu vrata/tapasya practice and formal Jain ascetic discipline.
Old Self
Approved rendering: જૂનો માણસ
Transliteration: jūno māṇas
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Original: παλαιὸς ἄνθρωπος
Category: Sanctification
The former, unregenerate nature and identity, decisively and completely put off in union with Christ (3:9). Must not be read as a moral self-improvement project accomplished by the believer’s own effort, echoing Hindu self-purification or Jain karma-shedding through austerity.
New Self
Approved rendering: નવો માણસ
Transliteration: navo māṇas
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Original: νέος / καινὸς ἄνθρωπος
Category: Sanctification
The regenerated identity, being progressively renewed in knowledge after the image of its Creator (3:10).
Put Off Put On
Approved rendering: ઉતારવું / પહેરવું
Transliteration: utārvũ / paheravũ
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Original: ἀπεκδυσάμενοι / ἐνδυσάμενοι
Category: Sanctification
The clothing-metaphor governing the old-self/new-self doctrine: a decisive change of identity, not a gradual patching (2:11, 3:9, 3:12).
Idolatry
Approved rendering: મૂર્તિપૂજા
Transliteration: mūrtipūjā
Doctrine: Idolatry Warning
Original: εἰδωλολατρία
Category: Sin
Literal image-worship, extended metaphorically by Paul to covetousness as disordered ultimate devotion (3:5). Standard, everyday Gujarati word for a highly visible, normalized practice across Gujarat’s Hindu and Jain communities (murti veneration in mandirs/derasars). Paul’s extension to covetousness must not soften or relativize the condemnation of literal image-worship; both stand condemned together.
Submit
Approved rendering: આધીન થવું
Transliteration: ādhīn thavũ
Doctrine: Household Codes
Original: ὑποτάσσεσθε
Category: Household
The voluntary ordering of wives under husbands, qualified ‘as is fitting in the Lord’ (3:18). Must be taught with the reciprocal husband-duty (‘love your wives,’ 3:19) held tightly together, framed as voluntary Christian practice modeled on Christ’s own self-giving, not raw culturally-inherited patriarchal subordination — an application question especially live in Gujarati household culture.
Master Human
Approved rendering: શેઠ / માલિક
Transliteration: śeṭh / mālik
Doctrine: Household Codes
Rejected alternatives: પ્રભુ
Original: κύριος (human referent)
Category: Household
CRITICAL DISAMBIGUATION: the human slave-owning master addressed in the household code (3:22, 4:1) — the same Greek word κύριος rendered ‘Lord’ for Christ elsewhere. Must NEVER be rendered પ્રભુ, which the baseline reserves exclusively for Christ’s divine Lordship. Paul’s own wordplay (‘whatever you do… it is the Lord Christ you are serving,’ 3:22-24, even while addressing human masters) must be preserved by explicit clause-level teaching, not by lexical overlap.
Medium Risk Terms
Apostle
Approved rendering: પ્રેરિત
Transliteration: prerit
Doctrine: Apostleship
Rejected alternatives: ગુરુ, સંદેશવાહક
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly without modification. Occurs at Colossians 1:1 (Paul’s self-designation).
Church
Approved rendering: મંડળી
Transliteration: maṇḍaḷī
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Rejected alternatives: મંદિર, દેરાસર
Original: ἐκκλησία
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly without modification. In Colossians the referent is explicitly the organic ‘body’ Christ heads (1:18, 1:24, 4:15-16), not a building.
Kingdom Of God
Approved rendering: પરમેશ્વરનું રાજ્ય
Transliteration: Parmeśvarnũ Rājya
Doctrine: Kingdom Mission
Rejected alternatives: ઈશ્વરનું રાષ્ટ્ર
Original: βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Kingdom
Inherited from Romans package; base rendering reused exactly. Colossians 1:13 adapts the phrase as ‘the kingdom of his beloved Son’ (તેમના પ્રિય પુત્રનું રાજ્ય); not a political or territorial kingdom.
Peace
Approved rendering: શાંતિ
Transliteration: śānti
Doctrine: Peace with God
Rejected alternatives: મનની શાંતિ
Original: εἰρήνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly without modification. Occurs at Colossians 1:2, 1:20 (peace secured by Christ’s blood), 3:15 (the peace of Christ ruling in believers’ hearts).
Gentiles
Approved rendering: અન્ય પ્રજાઓ
Transliteration: anya prajāo
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles
Rejected alternatives: વિદેશીઓ
Original: ἔθνη
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly without modification. Occurs at Colossians 1:27 (recipients of the revealed mystery); extended further at 3:11’s dissolving of ethnic/ritual/status distinctions.
Intercession
Approved rendering: મધ્યસ્થતા
Transliteration: madhyasthatā
Doctrine: Prayer and Intercession
Original: προσευχή
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly without modification. Occurs alongside પ્રાર્થના (prayer) at Colossians 1:3, 4:2-4, 4:12.
Mission
Approved rendering: મિશન / સુવાર્તા પ્રચાર
Transliteration: miśan / suvārtā prachār
Doctrine: Mission to the Nations
Original: εὐαγγελίζω (implicit)
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly without modification. Occurs at Colossians 1:23, 1:28, 4:3-4.
Love
Approved rendering: પ્રેમ
Transliteration: prem
Doctrine: Christian Fellowship
Original: ἀγάπη
Category: Faith
Spirit-produced, selfless love among believers and toward God (1:4, 1:8, 3:14, 3:19). Overlaps with bhakti-devotional ‘prem’ directed toward a chosen deity (Krishna-bhakti’s prem-bhakti); context must anchor the term to Spirit-fruit love, not devotional sentiment toward a chosen personal deity among options.
Hope
Approved rendering: આશા
Transliteration: āśā
Doctrine: Hope of the Gospel
Original: ἐλπίς
Category: Faith
Certain, promise-secured future expectation (1:5, 1:23, 1:27). Must convey certainty grounded in God’s promise, not uncertain hope tied to an unresolved karmic ledger across Hindu/Jain rebirth frameworks.
Wisdom
Approved rendering: ડહાપણ
Transliteration: ḍahāpaṇ
Doctrine: Christian Growth in Knowledge and Wisdom
Rejected alternatives: પ્રજ્ઞા
Original: σοφία
Category: Sanctification
Deliberately an everyday Gujarati word (not the Sanskritic પ્રજ્ઞા, which carries Jain/Buddhist technical self-attained-insight associations) to keep this distinct from the Critical-risk જ્ઞાન. Occurs at 1:9, 1:28, 2:3, 2:23 (false sense), 3:16, 4:5.
Inheritance
Approved rendering: વારસો
Transliteration: vārso
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Original: κληρονομία
Category: Salvation
The full inheritance-right of the saints in light (1:12) and the reward received from the Lord (3:24). Connects to baseline adoption doctrine (દત્તકપણું); must convey full, not partial or provisional, right.
Tradition
Approved rendering: પરંપરા
Transliteration: paramparā
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Original: παράδοσις
Category: False Teaching
Merely human, non-revealed teaching contrasted with Christ (2:8, negative sense). પરંપરા is an everyday, largely neutral Gujarati word for inherited custom; context must supply Paul’s negative valence here.
Philosophy
Approved rendering: તત્વજ્ઞાન
Transliteration: tattvajñāna
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Rejected alternatives: દર્શન
Original: φιλοσοφία
Category: False Teaching
The specific syncretistic human system of thought troubling Colossae, called ‘empty deceit’ (2:8). Overlaps with the ‘tattva’ vocabulary central to Jain metaphysics (Tattvārtha Sūtra) and Hindu darshana traditions. Must clarify Paul condemns any human system, however tattva-like in sophistication, that displaces Christ’s sufficiency — not careful thinking as such.
Circumcision
Approved rendering: સુન્નત
Transliteration: sunnat
Doctrine: Union with Christ (Died and Raised With Him)
Original: περιτομή
Category: Covenant
The physical Abrahamic rite; here, its spiritual fulfillment accomplished by Christ himself in believers (2:11). Standard Gujarati Bible term (also familiar from Islamic usage); teaching must clarify Colossians 2:11 speaks of a spiritual, Christ-accomplished reality, not a call to the physical rite.
Decrees
Approved rendering: નિયમો / હુકમો
Transliteration: niyamo / hukamo
Doctrine: Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins
Original: δόγμα
Category: Covenant
The specific binding legal requirements/charges canceled at the cross (2:14, 2:20). Must be distinguished from baseline’s νόμος (નિયમશાસ્ત્ર); δόγμα denotes the specific legal charges canceled, not the whole body of Scripture-revelation.
Shadow And Substance
Approved rendering: છાયા / વાસ્તવિકતા
Transliteration: chāyā / vāstavikatā
Doctrine: Preeminence and Sufficiency of Christ
Original: σκιά / σῶμα
Category: Covenant
OT ceremonial observances as mere preview (shadow); Christ as the solid reality (substance) they always pointed to (2:17).
Hidden With Christ
Approved rendering: છુપાયેલું
Transliteration: chupāyelũ
Doctrine: Union with Christ (Died and Raised With Him)
Original: κρύπτω
Category: Christology
The believer’s true life presently unseen but utterly secure in God through union with Christ (3:3). Must not be confused with the negative, elitist ‘hiddenness’ of exclusive esoteric knowledge critiqued in chapter 2 (see mystery entry); here hiddenness is positive — secure, not secret-and-exclusive.
Being Renewed
Approved rendering: નવીકરણ પામવો
Transliteration: navīkaraṇ pāmavo
Doctrine: Sanctification and Renewal
Original: ἀνακαινούμενον
Category: Sanctification
The ongoing, present-tense Spirit-worked renewal of the new self (3:10). Connects to baseline sanctification doctrine (પવિત્રીકરણ); distinct from the completed put-off/put-on acts.
Slave
Approved rendering: દાસ
Transliteration: dās
Doctrine: Household Codes
Original: δοῦλος
Category: Household
The first-century social institution of slavery, addressed pastorally in the household code (3:22, 4:1). Teaching should note the historical, first-century social institution being addressed, while avoiding a reading that endorses caste-based hereditary servitude — a live and sensitive social-application question in the Gujarati context.
Low Risk Terms
Thanksgiving
Approved rendering: આભારસ્તુતિ
Transliteration: ābhārstuti
Doctrine: Thanksgiving
Original: εὐχαριστία
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly without modification. Occurs at Colossians 1:12, 3:15, 3:17, 4:2.
Understanding
Approved rendering: સમજ
Transliteration: samaj
Doctrine: Christian Growth in Knowledge and Wisdom
Original: σύνεσις
Category: Sanctification
Standard, low-ambiguity term. Occurs at 1:9, 2:2.
Stewardship
Approved rendering: કારભાર
Transliteration: kārbhār
Doctrine: Apostolic Suffering and Ministry
Original: οἰκονομία
Category: Ministry
The administrative task entrusted to Paul by God (1:25). Standard, low-risk term.
Humility Genuine
Approved rendering: નમ્રતા
Transliteration: namratā
Doctrine: Sanctification and Renewal
The same Gujarati word as humility_false_asceticism but here names a genuine, Spirit-produced Christian virtue (3:12), part of the ‘new self’ virtue list alongside compassion, kindness, meekness, patience. Context (not lexical choice) disambiguates this from the condemned ascetic self-display sense of 2:18/2:23.
Partiality
Approved rendering: પક્ષપાત
Transliteration: pakṣapāt
Doctrine: Household Codes
Original: προσωπολημψία
Category: Household
Unjust favoritism, excluded from the master’s dealings with his slaves (3:25). Standard, low-risk term.
Salt Speech
Approved rendering: મીઠું
Transliteration: mīṭhũ
Doctrine: Christian Fellowship
Original: ἅλας
Category: Church
A metaphor for gracious, discerning speech, ‘seasoned with salt’ (4:6). Standard metaphor, low risk.
