Core Glossary
Core Glossary — Titus | English → Gujarati
This glossary records every load-bearing theological term identified across the whole book of Titus (chapters 1–3), citing the chapter(s) where each occurs. Terms already present in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json are marked [TM] and MUST use the exact recorded Gujarati rendering — no deviation permitted. New terms unique to the Titus curriculum are marked [NEW] and are proposed here for addition to translation memory, pending the standard risk-review process defined in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md.
Risk tiers follow baseline convention: Critical = human theologian review of every occurrence; High = human theologian review; Medium = native speaker review; Low = automated review sufficient.

Section 2 — New Terms Introduced by Titus
| # | English Term | Greek | Transliteration | Gujarati Rendering | Gujarati Transliteration | Risk | Doctrine | Titus Occurrences | Rejected Alternatives | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 22 | Savior | σωτήρ | sōtēr | ઉદ્ધારક | uddhārak | Critical | Deity of Christ / Salvation | 1:3,4; 2:10,13; 3:4,6 | મુક્તિદાતા (moksha-root) | Built on TM’s ઉદ્ધાર root. Title shared by both Father (1:3; 3:4) and Son (2:13; 3:6) — must render identically for both to preserve Trinitarian symmetry. |
| 23 | great God and Savior (Christ) | μεγάλου θεοῦ καὶ σωτῆρος | megalou theou kai sōtēros | મહાન પરમેશ્વર અને ઉદ્ધારક | mahān Parmeśvar ane uddhārak | Critical | Deity of Christ | 2:13 | phrasing implying two referents | Single-referent grammatical construction (Sharp’s rule); must not be rendered as if naming two persons. Mandatory theologian review every occurrence. |
| 24 | appeared / appearing | ἐπιφαίνω / ἐπιφάνεια | epiphainō / epiphaneia | પ્રગટ થવું / પ્રગટન | pragaṭ thavũ / pragaṭan | Critical | Incarnation / Second Coming | 2:11,13; 3:4 | અવતાર-adjacent vocabulary | Same event-family covers both the incarnation (2:11; 3:4) and the return of Christ (2:13); NEVER avatar-descent language. |
| 25 | training (grace trains) | παιδεύω | paideuō | તાલીમ આપવી | tālīm āpavī | High | Grace That Trains for Godly Living | 2:12 | તપ (tapa, ascetic self-training) | Grace itself is the trainer; mandatory note distinguishing from self-imposed ascetic discipline. |
| 26 | godliness | εὐσέβεια | eusebeia | ઈશ્વરપરાયણતા | īśvarparāyaṇatā | High | Sound Doctrine and Good Works | 1:1; 2:12 | ભક્તિ (alone), ધર્મનિષ્ઠા | Avoid bhakti-devotional-to-any-deity reading and ધર્મ root. |
| 27 | ungodliness | ἀσέβεια | asebeia | ઈશ્વરહીનતા | īśvarhīnatā | Medium/High | Grace That Trains | 2:12 | અધર્મ | Antonym pair with #26. |
| 28 | self-controlled / self-control | σώφρων / σωφρόνως / σωφρονίζω | sōphrōn/sōphronōs | સંયમી / સંયમથી | sanyamī / sanyamthī | High | Grace That Trains | 1:8; 2:2,4,5,6,12 | none accepted; retained with mandatory note | Collision: સંયમ (samyam) is a core Jain ascetic-restraint virtue. Retain standard Gujarati Christian usage but require a mandatory distinguishing note (grace-produced, not self-attained) on every doctrinally significant occurrence — same treatment pattern as TM’s કૃપા and વિશ્વાસ. |
| 29 | worldly passions / desire | ἐπιθυμία (κοσμική) | epithymia | વાસના / સાંસારિક વાસના | vāsanā / sānsārik vāsanā | Medium | Grace That Trains | 2:12; 3:3 | — | વાસના carries karmic-residue connotation in Hindu/Jain thought; mandatory note that no karmic mechanism is implied here. |
| 30 | present age | (νῦν) αἰών | (nyn) aiōn | વર્તમાન કાળ | vartamān kāl | High | Fulfillment of Prophecy (linear time) | 2:12 | યુગ (yuga) | NEVER યુગ — avoids Hindu cyclical cosmological-age framing. |
| 31 | blessed hope | μακαρία ἐλπίς | makaria elpis | ધન્ય આશા | dhanya āśā | Medium | Assurance / Second Coming | 2:13 | — | |
| 32 | gave himself for (atonement) | ἔδωκεν ἑαυτὸν ὑπὲρ | edōken heauton hyper | પોતાને…માટે આપ્યો | potāne…māṭe āpyo | High | Atonement (escalation trigger per baseline) | 2:14 | — | Mandatory theologian review per baseline’s atonement/propitiation escalation rule. |

| 38 | works (soteriological) | ἔργα | erga | કૃત્યો | kṛtyo | Critical | Salvation by Grace not Works | 1:16; 3:5 | કર્મ (karma) — ABSOLUTE FORBIDDEN | Highest-priority forbidden-substitution: કર્મ names the Hindu/Jain self-generated karmic ledger; using it would imply Paul denies only one form of merit while affirming another. |
| 39 | mercy | ἔλεος | eleos | દયા | dayā | High | Salvation by Grace not Works | 3:5 | — | Distinct from but paired with grace: mercy withholds deserved judgment; grace gives undeserved favor. |

| 42 | renewal | ἀνακαίνωσις | anakainōsis | નવીનીકરણ | navīnīkaraṇ | High | Regeneration by the Holy Spirit | 3:5 | — | Paired with #41; ongoing renovation distinct from the one-time new-creation event. |

| 44 | heir | κληρονόμος | klēronomos | વારસ | vāras | Medium | Salvation / Adoption (adjacent) | 3:7 | — | |
| 45 | eternal life | ζωὴ αἰώνιος | zōē aiōnios | અનંત જીવન | anant jīvan | Medium/High | Salvation by Grace not Works | 1:2; 3:7 | યુગોનું જીવન (yuga-based compound) | Uses અનંત (“unending”) rather than a યુગ-based compound, consistent with #30’s caution. |
| 46 | trustworthy saying | Πιστὸς ὁ λόγος | Pistos ho logos | વિશ્વાસપાત્ર વચન | viśvāsapātra vachan | Medium | Sound Doctrine and Good Works | 3:8 | — | Recurring Pastoral-Epistles formula; keep consistent if reused in future curricula. |
| 47 | elder | πρεσβύτερος | presbyteros | વડીલ | vaḍīl | High | Qualifications for Elders | 1:5 | ગુરુ, સંત, મુનિ (all rejected per baseline pattern) | Appointed office defined by moral qualification, not spiritual attainment or age alone. |

| 52 | knowledge of the truth | ἐπίγνωσις ἀληθείας | epignōsis alētheias | સત્યનું જ્ઞાન | satya-nũ gnān | High | Inspiration/Sound Doctrine (adjacent) | 1:1 | — | જ્ઞાન collides with Jain kevala-jnana (self-attained omniscience); must be taught as revealed, received knowledge. |
| 53 | myth | μῦθος | mythos | કલ્પિત વાર્તા | kalpit vārtā | Medium/High | Sound Doctrine and Good Works | 1:14 | — | Scope narrowly to the specific false teaching in view; not a blanket dismissal of all traditional narrative genres. |
| 54 | submit / be subject | ὑποτάσσω | hypotassō | આધીન થવું / રહેવું | ādhīn thavũ/rahevũ | High | Submission to Authority | 2:5,9; 3:1 | — | Voluntary ordered submission to legitimate authority, distinct from merit-earning submission to a guru/teacher. |
| 55 | rulers / authorities | ἀρχή / ἐξουσία | archē / exousia | અધિકારીઓ / સત્તાધીશો | adhikārīo / sattādhīśo | Medium | Submission to Authority | 3:1 | — | Civil government, ordained for order. |

| 57 | master (of slaves) | δεσπότης | despotēs | શેઠ/માલિક | śeṭh/mālik | Medium | (household code) | 2:9 | પ્રભુ (forbidden — Christological title reserved for Christ) | Must never be rendered પ્રભુ. |

| 60 | quarrels about the law | μάχαι νομικαί | machai nomikai | નિયમશાસ્ત્ર સંબંધી તકરારો | niyamśāstra sambandhī takrāro | Medium/High | Avoiding Divisive Controversies | 3:9 | — | Built on TM’s નિયમશાસ્ત્ર root. |
| 61 | admonition | νουθεσία | nouthesia | ચેતવણી | chetvaṇī | Medium | Avoiding Divisive Controversies | 3:10 | — |
Section 3 — Low-Risk Standard Vocabulary (Reviewed, No Individual Doctrine-Collision Flag)
The following terms occur in Titus and were reviewed for collision risk; none rose above Low risk. They should still enter translation memory for consistency but require no theologian escalation:
| Term(s) | Greek | Gujarati | Chapter(s) |
|---|---|---|---|
| kindness, loving-kindness | χρηστότης, φιλανθρωπία | ભલાઈ, માનવપ્રીતિ | 3:4 (Medium — see note below) |
Note on χρηστότης/φιλανθρωπία (3:4): although the individual lexical risk is Low-Medium, their doctrinal role as the positive turning-point of the Salvation by Grace not Works passage (3:3-5) means any segment containing them should still be flagged for native speaker review per the escalation rules in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md §“Grace being contrasted with works/merit.”
Cross-Reference to Doctrine Risk Registry
All Critical and High risk terms in Section 2 above must be added to an extended doctrine_risk_registry.json for Titus (Phase 1 Step 2 deliverable) under the following doctrine headings, consistent with the curriculum parameters:

This glossary must be loaded alongside the baseline translation_memory.json for all Phase 2 Titus translation work. No term listed in Section 1 may be re-translated; all Section 2 terms are proposed additions pending the standard version-increment procedure defined in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md.
Critical Risk Terms
Grace
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: kṛpā
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives:
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package, exact rendering required. In Titus, grace is personified as an active trainer of godly character (2:11-12) and is directly and explicitly contrasted with ‘works done by us in righteousness’ (3:4-7) — every such segment must preserve the contrast against both the Hindu karma-merit economy and Jain nirjara (self-effort karmic shedding).
Righteousness
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: nyāyīpaṇũ
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives:
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Titus 3:5 explicitly negates ‘works done by us in righteousness’ as a basis of salvation — even sincerely righteous deeds cannot save; this is forensic standing granted, not conduct achieved.
Justification
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: nyāyī ṭharāvavũ
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives:
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Applied in Titus 3:7 as the ground of becoming an heir (‘having been justified by his grace we might become heirs’).
Salvation
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: uddhār
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives:
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Titus 3:5’s verb ἔσωσεν (‘he saved us’) must render as ઉદ્ધાર કર્યો, reusing this exact root. NEVER મોક્ષ, મુક્તિ, કેવલજ્ઞાન, or સિદ્ધત્વ — 3:5 directly denies that salvation is self-attained liberation from karmic bondage.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Pavitra Ātmā
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives:
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package, exact rendering required. Titus 3:5-6 names the Spirit as the personal divine agent of regeneration and renewal, poured out richly through Christ — a Trinitarian, personal act, never an impersonal life-force.
Jesus
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Īsu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives:
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs throughout Titus, always within Savior/Christ titles (1:1,4; 2:13; 3:6).
God
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Parmeśvar
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives:
Original: θεός
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Titus 2:13 identifies God and Christ together in a single Savior title (see great_god_and_savior below) — the single-referent construction depends on this term never being replaced with ભગવાન or ઈશ્વર.
Father
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Pitā
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives:
Original: (implied epistolary; πατήρ pattern)
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Named in the Titus 1:4 greeting formula.
Lord
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: prabhu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives:
Inherited from Romans package. Not a frequent title-word in Titus itself, but standing here as an internal fencing rule: પ્રભુ is reserved exclusively for Christ and must NEVER be used to render δεσπότης (‘master,’ Titus 2:9), the human household-authority figure.
Savior
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: uddhārak
Doctrine: Deity of Christ (Savior Title)
Rejected alternatives:
Original: σωτήρ
Category: Christology
New term built on TM’s ઉદ્ધાર root. Title shared by both the Father (1:3; 3:4) and the Son (2:13; 3:6) — must render identically for both to preserve Trinitarian symmetry. Never રેન્ડર as મુક્તિદાતા (moksha-root).
Great God And Savior
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: mahān Parmeśvar ane uddhārak
Doctrine: Deity of Christ (Savior Title)
Rejected alternatives: phrasing with a comma or connector implying two referents (e.g. ‘
Category: Christology
Single-referent Greek construction (Sharp’s rule): one article governing two nouns joined by καί, followed by one genitive name, identifies Jesus Christ AS ‘the great God and Savior.’ Render as one continuous title with no comma/connector. Mandatory theologian review on every occurrence. Never echo Jehovah’s Witness (NWT)-style two-referent splitting.
Appearing
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: pragaṭ thavũ / pragaṭan
Doctrine: Deity of Christ (Savior Title)
Category: Christology
Covers both the incarnation/first coming (2:11; 3:4) and Christ’s future visible return (2:13) with the same event-family term. NEVER render with અવતાર-adjacent vocabulary suggesting a repeatable divine descent, especially salient given nearby Dwarka’s Vaishnav avatar theology. Use the identical verb-family across all three occurrences as a consistency set.
Good Works
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: sārā kām
Doctrine: Sound Doctrine and Good Works
Original: καλὰ ἔργα
Category: Sanctification
The positive fruit-of-grace sense, exclusively. Must always be kept subsequent to and dependent on grace/salvation, never causal. Never merge with ‘works_soteriological’ (કૃત્યો) below — the two-word system is mandatory throughout the letter.
Works Soteriological
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: kṛtyo
Doctrine: Salvation by Grace not Works
Rejected alternatives: કર્મ (karma) — ABSOLUTE FORBIDDEN
Original: ἔργα (ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ)
Category: Salvation
Titus 1:16 (negative form); 3:5 (ἔργων … ABSOLUTELY FORBIDDEN: કર્મ, the load-bearing technical term of Hindu/Jain soteriology naming the self-generated karmic ledger. Using કર્મ would make Paul appear to deny only one form of karmic accounting while implying salvation is still some other form of self-earned merit. Highest-priority forbidden-substitution in the entire Titus curriculum.
Regeneration
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: navsarjan
Doctrine: Regeneration by the Holy Spirit
Category: Sanctification
Titus 3:5 (παλιγγενεσία). ABSOLUTELY FORBIDDEN: પુનર્જન્મ, the precise Hindu/Jain technical term for the soul’s reincarnation/transmigration into a new body by accumulated karma — the exact mechanical, cyclical, self-driven process this verse’s ‘not by works’ clause denies. Deliberately avoids the જન્મ (birth) morpheme entirely, paralleling baseline’s પુનરુત્થાન strategy for resurrection. Mandatory theologian review on every occurrence.
Sound Doctrine
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: tandurast updesh
Doctrine: Sound Doctrine and Good Works
Rejected alternatives:
Category: Sanctification
Preserves Paul’s health/sickness metaphor (ὑγιαίνω, ‘to be healthy’). Avoid શુદ્ધ ઉપદેશ (‘pure teaching’) — શુદ્ધ leans toward ritual/ascetic purity and would obscure the metaphor. Must render identically at every occurrence.
High Risk Terms
Gospel
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: suvārtā
Doctrine: Gospel
Rejected alternatives:
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. In Titus the gospel is specifically the message of grace that appeared bringing salvation to all people (2:11) and the preaching (κήρυγμα) entrusted to Paul (1:3); must convey a single historical announcement, not one religious teaching among Gujarat’s many paths.
Faith
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: viśvāsa
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives:
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in Titus as the shared faith of God’s elect (1:1,4), a household virtue (2:2,10), the settled state of believers (3:8), and the root of the ‘trustworthy saying’ formula (વિશ્વાસપાત્ર વચન, 3:8).
Holy
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: pavitra
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives:
Category: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package. Root for the Holy Spirit (3:5), for Christ’s purifying action (2:14, પવિત્ર કરવું), and for moral/chaste conduct (2:5, ἁγναί). Note: Titus 1:15’s ‘pure/defiled’ (καθαρά/μεμιαμμένοις) is one of the rare places શુદ્ધ/અશુદ્ધ is contextually appropriate, since Paul is there directly engaging ritual-purity categories, not describing sanctification.
Law
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: niyamśāstra
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Rejected alternatives:
Original: νόμος (root; νομικάς Titus 3:9)
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package. Root for Titus 3:9’s ‘quarrels about the law’ (νομικάς → નિયમશાસ્ત્ર સંબંધી તકરારો) and for ‘lawlessness’ (ἀνομία → નિયમહીનતા, 2:14). NEVER ધર્મ.
Election
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Parmeśvarnī Pasandagī
Doctrine: Divine Election
Rejected alternatives:
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package (root). Titus 1:1: Paul’s ministry is ‘for the sake of the faith of God’s elect’ (ἐκλεκτῶν → પસંદ કરાયેલા). Not impersonal fate or self-generated Jain karmic cause-and-effect.
Glory
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: mahimā
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives:
Original: δόξα
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Titus 2:13: ‘the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.’ Avoid light-only imagery that could merge with Jain kevala-jnana associations.

Transliteration: pāp
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Rejected alternatives:
Original: ἁμαρτάνω (root, ἁμαρτάνει Titus 3:11)
Category: Sin
Inherited from Romans package (root). Used of the divisive person’s self-condemning sin in Titus 3:11 (ἁμαρτάνει). Distinct from the impersonal karmic residue (karma-pudgala) of Jain doctrine.
Sanctification
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: pavitrikaraṇ
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives:
Category: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package (root). Applied as a pattern to Christ’s purifying action (2:14) and the Spirit’s renewal (3:5). Distinguish from tapa (Jain ascetic austerity).
Training
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: tālīm āpavī
Doctrine: Grace That Trains for Godly Living
Rejected alternatives: તપ (tapa, ascetic self-training)
Original: παιδεύουσα (παιδεύω)
Category: Sanctification
Titus 2:12 (παιδεύουσα): grace itself is the grammatical agent that trains believers. Must be framed as grace’s own action upon the believer, never self-imposed ascetic discipline (tapa/samyam). Keep કૃપા explicit as the subject: ‘કૃપા…
Godliness
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: īśvarparāyaṇatā
Doctrine: Grace That Trains for Godly Living
Rejected alternatives: ભક્તિ (alone), ધર્મનિષ્ઠા
Original: εὐσέβεια / εὐσεβῶς
Category: Sanctification
Titus 1:1; 2:12 (εὐσέβεια/εὐσεβῶς). Avoid ભક્તિ-alone (bhakti-devotional-to-any-deity connotation) and the ધર્મ root (Jain metaphysical substance / Hindu duty-order).
Ungodliness
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: īśvarhīnatā
Doctrine: Grace That Trains for Godly Living
Rejected alternatives:
Original: ἀσέβεια
Category: Sanctification

Self Control
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: sanyamī / sanyamthī
Doctrine: Grace That Trains for Godly Living
Category: Sanctification
COLLISION RISK: સંયમ (samyam) is a core Jain ascetic-restraint virtue believed to shed karma through self-effort. Retain standard Gujarati Christian usage but require a mandatory distinguishing note on every doctrinally significant occurrence: this virtue is grace’s product (2:11-12), not self-attained ascetic restraint. Repetition-reinforcement rule: the note must recur at least once per lesson unit, not merely once per letter.
Present Age
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: vartamān kāl
Doctrine: Grace That Trains for Godly Living
Rejected alternatives: યુગ (yuga)
Original: (νῦν) αἰών
Category: Eschatology
Titus 2:12 ((νῦν) αἰών). NEVER યુગ — યુગ names the four cyclical Hindu cosmological ages and risks assimilating Paul’s linear salvation-history into cyclical cosmology.
Atonement Self Giving
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: potāne…māṭe āpyo
Doctrine: Atonement
Category: Christology
Christ’s voluntary substitutionary self-sacrifice. Per baseline escalation rules, every atonement/propitiation-adjacent segment requires mandatory theologian review.
Redemption
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: ugārvũ
Doctrine: Salvation by Grace not Works
Rejected alternatives: મુક્ત કરવું (moksha-root)
Original: λυτρόομαι (λυτρώσηται)
Category: Salvation
Titus 2:14 (λυτρώσηται). Never derive from મુક્ત-root vocabulary. Keep distinct from but causally linked to ઉદ્ધાર (salvation) — redemption names the purchase-price mechanism behind salvation.
Lawlessness
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: niyamhīnatā
Doctrine: Sound Doctrine and Good Works
Rejected alternatives:
Original: ἀνομία
Category: Sin
Titus 2:14 (ἀνομία), built on TM’s નિયમશાસ્ત્ર root. Avoid અધર્મ, which reads through Hindu dharma categories.
Purify
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: pavitra karvũ
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives:
Original: καθαρίζω (καθαρίσῃ)
Category: Sanctification
Titus 2:14 (καθαρίσῃ). Uses the પવિત્ર root rather than શુદ્ધ, which leans toward ritual/ascetic purity relevant to Jain purity practice, consistent with baseline sanctification convention.
Peculiar People
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: potānī khās prajā
Doctrine: Sound Doctrine and Good Works
Original: λαὸς περιούσιος
Category: Church
Titus 2:14 (λαὸς περιούσιος, echoing Exodus 19:5 LXX). Must be taught alongside the Universal Scope of the Gospel doctrine so it is not misread as a new caste-like elite category in Gujarat’s caste-conscious social context.
Mercy
Approved rendering: દયા
Transliteration: dayā
Doctrine: Salvation by Grace not Works
Original: ἔλεος
Category: Salvation
Titus 3:5 (ἔλεος), the stated positive ground of salvation. Must be taught alongside કૃપા (grace) as closely related but distinct: mercy withholds deserved judgment; grace gives undeserved favor. Neither is a reward for effort. Requires a co-occurrence note wherever both terms appear together in the same passage.
Washing
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: dhovāṇ
Doctrine: Regeneration by the Holy Spirit
Rejected alternatives: સ્નાન (ritual bath)
Original: λουτρόν
Category: Sanctification
Titus 3:5 (λουτρόν). Avoid સ્નાન, which in Gujarati religious usage names Hindu purificatory/pilgrimage bathing; ધોવાણ keeps the sense generic.
Renewal
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: navīnīkaraṇ
Doctrine: Regeneration by the Holy Spirit
Original: ἀνακαίνωσις
Category: Sanctification
Titus 3:5 (ἀνακαίνωσις). The Spirit’s continuing renovating work, paired with but distinct from the one-time event of regeneration (નવસર્જન).
Eternal Life
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: anant jīvan
Doctrine: Eternal Life and Inheritance
Rejected alternatives: યુગોનું જીવન (yuga-based compound)
Original: ζωὴ αἰώνιος
Category: Eschatology
Titus 1:2; 3:7 (ζωὴ αἰώνιος). Uses અનંત (‘unending/infinite’) rather than a યુગ-based compound, for the same reason αἰών was handled carefully at 2:12.
Elder
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: vaḍīl
Doctrine: Qualifications for Elders
Rejected alternatives:
Category: Church
Titus 1:5 (πρεσβύτερος). An appointed local church office defined by specific moral qualifications, not spiritual attainment, ascetic seniority, or lineage initiation (guru-diksha). Must never be rendered with ગુરુ, સંત, or મુનિ, all of which name status attained through personal ascetic/devotional achievement in Gujarat’s dominant traditions.
Overseer
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: dekhrekh rākhnār
Doctrine: Qualifications for Elders
Rejected alternatives: પૂજારી (temple priest)
Original: ἐπίσκοπος
Category: Church
Titus 1:7 (ἐπίσκοπος). Same office as ‘elder,’ viewed functionally (oversight/care). Do not collapse with elder into one generic ‘church leader’ term — keep both distinct per Titus 1:5-9’s dual usage. Must not be confused with a temple priest/caretaker role.
Knowledge Of Truth
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: satya-nũ gnān
Doctrine: Revealed Knowledge of the Truth
Original: ἐπίγνωσις ἀληθείας
Category: Sanctification
Titus 1:1 (ἐπίγνωσις ἀληθείας). COLLISION RISK: જ્ઞાન is the central term of Jain kevala-jnana, self-attained omniscient enlightenment through ascetic effort. Here it is knowledge given by God through revelation and received by faith, never self-attained. Always bind જ્ઞાન to સત્યનું and to a verb of receiving, not attaining.
Myth
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: kalpit vārtā
Doctrine: False Teaching and Jewish Myths
Original: μῦθος
Category: Sanctification
Titus 1:14 (μῦθος), ‘Jewish myths.’ Must be scoped narrowly to the specific legalistic false teaching Paul opposes, never heard as a blanket dismissal of Gujarati readers’ own traditional religious narratives (itihasa/purana).
Submit To Authority
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: ādhīn thavũ / rahevũ
Doctrine: Submission to Authority
Original: ὑποτάσσεσθαι
Category: Church
Titus 2:5,9; 3:1 (ὑποτάσσεσθαι). Voluntary ordered submission to legitimate civil/household authority, distinct from guru-disciple submission for spiritual attainment (Swaminarayan diksha; Jain monastic obedience). Always co-occur with an explicit object of submission (ruler/husband/master) in the same clause; never leave the verb doctrinally unscoped.
Foolish Controversies
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: mūrkha vādvivād
Doctrine: Avoiding Divisive Controversies
Original: μωραὶ ζητήσεις
Category: Church
Titus 3:9 (μωρὰς ζητήσεις). Anchor term for this doctrine. Keep in a debate/dispute register (વાદવિવાદ), not a civil-legal filing register.
Divisive Person
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: bhāgalā pāḍnār vyakti
Doctrine: Avoiding Divisive Controversies
Original: αἱρετικὸς ἄνθρωπος
Category: Church
Titus 3:10 (αἱρετικὸς ἄνθρωπος). Names the person, not just the debate. Mandatory note: targets persistent relational/factional division after repeated warning, not merely holding a different opinion once; must not be rendered with a heresy-trial register that would suppress sincere inquiry from new believers with Hindu or Jain background.
Quarrels About Law
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: niyamśāstra sambandhī takrāro
Doctrine: Avoiding Divisive Controversies
Original: μάχαι νομικαί
Category: Covenant
Titus 3:9 (μάχας νομικάς), built on TM’s નિયમશાસ્ત્ર root, echoing the circumcision-party conflict of chapter 1.
Loving Kindness
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: mānavprīti
Doctrine: Mercy and Grace in Salvation
Titus 3:4 (φιλανθρωπία). God’s own saving love, the ground of salvation — not generic humanitarian philanthropy divorced from grace, a distinction relevant given Gujarat’s strong tradition of religiously-motivated Jain merit-philanthropy.
Universal Scope Phrase
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: sarva manuṣyone
Doctrine: Universal Scope of the Gospel
Titus 2:11 (πᾶσιν ἀνθρώποις); parallel phrase ‘toward all people’ at 3:2. Must never be softened, qualified, or narrowed for caste-sensitivity reasons — the universality is itself the doctrinal point, challenging caste- and attainment-based spiritual hierarchy.
Medium Risk Terms
Apostle
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: prerit
Doctrine: Apostleship
Rejected alternatives:
Original: ἀπόστολος
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. Paul’s self-designation in Titus 1:1, paired with ‘servant of God’ (દાસ), frames all subsequent teaching and elder-appointment authority as delegated, not self-derived guru status.
Peace
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: śānti
Doctrine: Peace with God
Rejected alternatives:
Original: εἰρήνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Part of the fixed epistolary greeting formula in Titus 1:4: ‘grace and peace’ (કૃપા અને શાંતિ).

Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Rejected alternatives:
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package (root). Implied by the elder’s role as ‘steward’ (οἰκονόμος) of God’s household in Titus 1:7. Never મંદિર or દેરાસર.
Worldly Passions
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: sānsārik vāsanā
Doctrine: Grace That Trains for Godly Living
Category: Sin
COLLISION RISK: વાસના carries karmic latent-impression connotation in Hindu/Jain thought. Mandatory note: here it is simply ‘sinful desire,’ with no karmic-residue mechanism implied.
Blessed Hope
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: dhanya āśā
Doctrine: Second Coming and Blessed Hope
Original: μακαρία ἐλπίς
Category: Eschatology
Titus 2:13 (μακαρίαν ἐλπίδα). Confident, forward-looking hope, not fatalistic resignation to impersonal fate.

Doctrine: Sound Doctrine and Good Works
Original: Πιστὸς ὁ λόγος

Transliteration: kārbhārī

Transliteration: nirdoṣ
Doctrine: Qualifications for Elders

Doctrine: Avoiding Divisive Controversies

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: dās
Doctrine: Household Ethics and Gospel Witness
Original: δοῦλοι
Category: Church
Titus 2:9-10 (δοῦλοι). Household slaves addressed pastorally in the household code — same Gujarati word as servant_of_god above, distinct social referent recoverable from context.

Doctrine: False Teaching and Jewish Myths
Titus 1:15 (καθαρὰ / μεμιαμμένοις). One of the rare contextually appropriate uses of શુદ્ધ/અશુદ્ધ, since Paul himself is engaging ritual-purity categories directly to make an inward-moral point — must not be confused with the sanctification/purify vocabulary elsewhere in the book (પવિત્ર કરવું, નિયમહીનતા-adjacent terms).
Disobedient
