Semantic Analysis

Semantic Analysis — 2 Peter (Koine Greek), Full Book

Methodology

This analysis follows the PRD Phase 1 Step 1 mandate: the core passage (2 Peter 1:16–21) receives full verse-by-verse treatment; every other chapter of the book receives chapter-level treatment of load-bearing theological vocabulary using the same analytical fields. Where a term is already recorded in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json, that exact Gujarati rendering is reused without alteration, and this is noted explicitly (“Reused from Romans TM”). New terms specific to 2 Peter’s doctrinal content are analyzed and assigned a proposed Gujarati rendering and risk tier for validation in Step 2 (Doctrine Analysis) and codification in 08_core_glossary.md.

Fields applied to every load-bearing term:

  • Original (Koine Greek)
  • Transliteration
  • Literal meaning
  • Semantic range
  • English variants (as seen across major English versions)
  • Contextual theological meaning (as used in 2 Peter)
  • Gujarati rendering & risk tier

PART A — CORE PASSAGE: 2 Peter 1:16–21 (Verse-by-Verse)

2 Peter 1:16

parousia
”presence,” “arrival,” “coming”
a ruler’s/dignitary’s official state arrival; in NT, Christ’s promised return
”coming,” “advent,” “appearing”
KEY TERM for “Certainty of Christ’s Return.” Here anchored to the Transfiguration as proof of the reality of the future physical returnઆગમન (āgaman) — Critical. TermsVariantsContextual theological meaningGujarati rendering & risk
βεβαιότερον τὸν προφητικὸν λόγον

”the more confirmed/sure prophetic word”
βέβαιος = firm, sure, guaranteed; here comparative — “made more sure” by eyewitness confirmation
”the prophetic word made more sure,” “the more fully confirmed prophetic message”

”morning star,” “day star”
Messianic image of Christ’s dawning glory at his return (cf. Revelation 22:16)પ્રભાતનો તારો (prabhātno tāro) — Medium. New term; must retain messianic force, not read as generic astrology (a live sensitivity given the established baseline caution about જ્યોતિષી/astrology terms).
καρδία
kardia
heart
seat of understanding, will, and affection
”heart,” “hearts”
The inward reception of prophetic truth, not mere intellectual assentહૃદય (hṝdaya) — Low. New term, standard.

ἐπίλυσις = a loosing, solving, interpreting; here “private, self-originated interpretation"
"one’s own interpretation,” “private interpretation”
Denies that prophecy originated from a human prophet’s own reasoning or insight — a direct rebuttal of any “self-illumination” account of Scripture’s originખાનગી અર્થઘટન (khānagī arthghaṭan) — High. New term. Must be framed carefully: the doctrinal point in v.20 is about the origin of prophecy (not human insight), not primarily a rule about how readers may/may not interpret Scripture today — a common mistranslation risk.

2 Peter 1:21

φέρω = to carry, bear, bring; a ship “borne along” by wind is the classic image
”moved by the Holy Spirit,” “carried along by the Holy Spirit”
THE central verbal-plenary inspiration statement of the NT — human authors spoke, yet the Spirit is the moving, directing cause. Πνεῦμα Ἅγιον reused exactly from baseline (પવિત્ર આત્મા)પવિત્ર આત્માથી પ્રેરાઈને (Pavitra Ātmāthī prerāīne) — Critical. “પ્રેરાઈને” (being moved/impelled) must convey active divine causation, not passive mystical inspiration akin to Hindu shruti (truths “heard” by ancient sages in meditative insight) or the Jain Agamas (teaching preserved from the Tirthankaras’ own attained omniscience) — both alternative accounts of scriptural origin that the baseline doctrine registry (inspiration_of_scripture) already flags.

Theos hēmōn kai Sōtēr Iēsous Christos

grammatical construction identifying one referent as both God and Savior
”our God and Savior Jesus Christ”
A direct, explicit assertion of the Deity of Christ, structurally parallel to Romans 9:5 already flagged Critical in the baseline registryપરમેશ્વર (reused) + ઉદ્ધારક (new, see below) — Critical. Must preserve the single-referent grammar in Gujarati; do not split into “God, and [a separate] Savior Jesus Christ.”

sōtēr
savior, deliverer
one who rescues/delivers
”savior”
The agent-noun form of salvation (σωτηρία, already ઉદ્ધાર in baseline); applied repeatedly to Christ across the letter as a titleઉદ્ધારક (uddhārak) — Critical. New term, built on baseline ઉદ્ધાર root for consistency. Must not be softened to a generic “rescuer/helper” that could be applied to any deity or guru; must retain exclusive reference to Christ.
χάρις (v.2)
charis
grace
unmerited favor
”grace”
Reused from Romans TM — કૃપાકૃપા — Critical, reused exactly.
εἰρήνη (v.2)

full/precise knowledge
intensified γνῶσις; personal, experiential, relational knowing
”knowledge,” “true knowledge”
Distinct from mere γνῶσις (v.5); denotes deepening, relational knowledge of God/Christ that grows over a believer’s life — central to “Growing in Christian Virtue”પૂર્ણ જ્ઞાન / ઓળખ (pūrṇa gnān / oḷakh) — High. Must be sharply distinguished from Jain kevalgyān (perfect, self-attained omniscience marking a soul’s liberation) and from Hindu jñāna-mārga (the “path of knowledge” toward moksha through self-realization). This is relational knowledge of a Person, granted and deepened by grace, never self-attained enlightenment.

theia dynamis
divine power
God’s own inherent power

The source of all resources for godly life — grace-given, not self-generatedપરમેશ્વરીય સામર્થ્ય (Parmeśvarīya sāmarthya) — High. Built on baseline સામર્થ્ય (never શક્તિ, per baseline forbidden-substitution rule).

aretē
virtue, excellence
moral excellence, moral courage
”virtue,” “excellence,” “goodness”
KEY TERM for “Growing in Christian Virtue” doctrineસદ્‌ગુણ (sadguṇ) — High. theias koinōnoi physeōs
”partakers of the divine nature”
κοινωνός = sharer/partner; φύσις = nature, essential character
”partakers of the divine nature,” “share in the divine nature”
KEY TERM for “Divine Nature and Escaping Corruption” doctrineપરમેશ્વરીય સ્વભાવના ભાગીદાર (Parmeśvarīya svabhāvnā bhāgīdār) — Critical. Extremely high collision risk: (1) Hindu Advaita teaching that ātman is already identical with Brahman (the individual soul’s essential divinity), and (2) Jain teaching that every soul possesses inherent potential to become a liberated, omniscient siddha through its own effort. Must be explicitly taught as a Spirit-given, promise-based moral/relational sharing in God’s character (holiness, love) granted through Christ — never an inherent or self-actualized divine essence of the soul.
φθορά (v.4; 2:12, 2:19)
phthora
corruption, decay, ruin
moral corruption; physical decay
”corruption,” “corruptible things”
The corrupting effect of worldly ἐπιθυμία, which believers escape through the divine natureભ્રષ્ટતા (bhraṣṭatā) — High. Part of the Christian virtue-chain (v.5–7), grace-empowered growth in characterઆત્મસંયમ (ātmasanyam) — High. Distinguish from Jain tapa/samyama, ascetic self-restraint understood as merit-earning austerity that purifies the soul; here self-control is Spirit-produced fruit added to faith, not a merit-generating discipline.
ὑπομονή (v.6)
hypomonē
patient endurance, perseverance
steadfastness under trial
”perseverance,” “steadfastness,” “patience”
Endurance in the virtue-chain, distinct from μακροθυμία (God’s patience, ch. 3)ધીરજ (dhīraj) — Medium. New term; care taken to distinguish this “believer’s endurance” sense from “God’s patience” (see μακροθυμία, ch. 3).

eusebeia
godliness, piety

”godliness,” “piety”
Godward devotion showing itself in holy living — part of the virtue-chain and a marker distinguishing true believers from false teachers (ch. 2–3)ઈશ્વરભક્તિ (Īśvarbhakti) — High. Established Gujarati Bible usage renders εὐσέβεια with ભક્તિ-based vocabulary, but ભક્તિ alone carries strong Gujarat bhakti-tradition connotations (already flagged in the baseline as a rejected alternative for “faith”). The compound ઈશ્વરભક્તિ (“devotion directed to God” specifically) is used to reduce ambiguity, but every occurrence must be checked against context to ensure it is not read as generic devotional piety transferable to any chosen deity.
φιλαδελφία (v.7)

brotherly love
love among believers as family
”brotherly kindness,” “brotherly affection”
Love within the believing community, distinguished from generic ἀγάπηભાઈચારો (bhāīcāro) — Low. New term.

self-giving, unconditional love; the crown of the virtue-chain
”love,” “charity”
The capstone Christian virtue, God’s own kind of love expressed toward othersપ્રેમ (prem) — Medium. New term; risk lies in Gujarati પ્રેમ’s broad everyday romantic/affectionate range — context must make the self-giving, non-erotic sense clear.
καθαρισμός τῶν πάλαι … ἁμαρτιῶν (v.9)
katharismos tōn palai hamartiōn
”cleansing/purification from former sins”
ritual or moral cleansing
”cleansed from former sins,” “purged from past sins”
The forgetting of one’s purification from past sin as a cause of spiritual fruitlessnessપાપોથી શુદ્ધ થવું (pāpōthī śuddha thavũ) — High. Avoid a bare નોમિનલ શુદ્ધિકરણ, already flagged in the baseline as risking a ritual-purification reading (cf. baseline note on sanctification vs. શુદ્ધિકરણ); this descriptive phrase keeps the cleansing tied to forgiveness of specific sins through Christ, not ritual/ascetic purity.
κλῆσις / ἐκλογή (v.10)
klēsis / eklogē
calling / election
God’s summons / God’s sovereign choice
”calling,” “election”
Reused from Romans TM — તેડું, પરમેશ્વરની પસંદગી. Here: “make your calling and election sure” — assurance expressed through growth in virtue, not earning of statusતેડું / પરમેશ્વરની પસંદગી — High, reused exactly.

aiōnios basileia tou Kyriou
”the eternal kingdom of the Lord”

Builds on baseline kingdom_of_god (પરમેશ્વરનું રાજ્ય); here explicitly the Lord’s (Christ’s) eternal reign entered at the endપ્રભુનું અનંત રાજ્ય (Prabhunũ anant rājya) — Medium, built from baseline components (પ્રભુ, રાજ્ય reused; અનંત “eternal/endless” newly added modifier).

skēnōma
tent, tabernacle
metaphor for the physical body as a temporary dwelling

exodos
departure, exit
euphemism for death
”departure,” “decease”
Peter’s approaching death, described with dignity as a “departure” (echoing the Exodus)પ્રયાણ / મૃત્યુ (prayāṇ/mṝtyu) — Low. New term.

The doctrinal content of false teaching, leading to ruinવિનાશકારી ખોટા સિદ્ધાંતો (vināśkārī khoṭā siddhāntō) — High. New term; avoid the loaded Gujarati પાખંડ, which carries strong hypocrisy connotations beyond the doctrinal-error sense intended.
δεσπότης (v.1)
despotēs
master, absolute owner
one exercising outright ownership/authority (stronger than κύριος in some contexts)
“Master,” “Sovereign Lord,” “Owner”
Applied to Christ, whom the false teachers deny even as he “bought” themમાલિક (mālik) — High. Deliberately distinct from the baseline-rejected સ્વામી (already flagged for “lord” due to guru/deity-authority collision); માલિક conveys ownership/mastery without the devotional-guru overtone.
ἀγοράσαντα (v.1)
agorasanta
having bought/purchased
commercial purchase; redemption imagery
”bought,” “redeemed,” “purchased”
Christ’s redemptive purchase of the false teachers themselves, now denied by them — heightens the gravity of their apostasyમૂલ્ય ચૂકવીને ખરીદનાર (mūlya cūkavīne kharīdnār) — High. New term; ties to atonement/redemption, adjacent to but distinct from baseline salvation.

KEY TERM for “The Day of the Lord and Final Judgment” doctrineન્યાય / ન્યાયચુકાદો (nyāy/nyāy-cukādō) — High. Must be presented as a personal God’s forensic verdict, not the impersonal, self-executing operation of karma (already flagged in baseline providence and election notes).
Ταρταρώσας (v.4)
Tartarōsas
”having cast into Tartarus”
Greek mythological term for the deepest abyss, adopted by Peter as a place of angelic confinement
”cast into hell,” “cast them into Tartarus”
The certain judgment already executed on sinning angels, as a warning precedent for the coming Day of Judgmentટાર્ટારસ (Ṭārṭāras) — Low, transliterated proper noun. Translator note: explain as a place of confinement/punishment for rebellious spirits, not to be confused with any target-culture hell-realm cosmology.
κατακλυσμός (v.5)
kataklysmos
flood, deluge
the Noahic flood
”flood”
Historical type of coming judgment (paired with fire in ch. 3)જળપ્રલય (jaḷapralay) — Medium. catastrophe, destruction, overthrow
total ruin/overturning
