Semantic Analysis
Semantic Analysis — 2 Timothy (Koine Greek)
Notes on Method
- Every term already recorded in the baseline Romans
translation_memory.json/bible_term_registry.jsonis reused exactly (e.g. πρᾶα → પ્રભુ, χάρις → કૃપા, πίστις → વિશ્વાસ, σωτηρία → ઉદ્ધાર, δικαιοσύνη → ન્યાયીપણું, ἀνάστασις → પુનરુત્થાન). These are marked [REUSE] below and not re-analyzed in full; only new contextual notes are added where 2 Timothy uses the term in a way the Romans curriculum did not (e.g. ἀνάστασις misapplied by false teachers in 2:18). - Terms not in the Romans baseline are analyzed in full and proposed for the
08_core_glossary.mdextension of translation memory. - 2 Timothy has no occurrence of ἐκκλησία (“church”), νόμος (“law” as Mosaic code), or διαθήκη (“covenant”) — these baseline terms are therefore not in scope for this book and are omitted rather than forced.
PART A — Core Passage Verse-by-Verse: 2 Timothy 3:14–4:5
2 Timothy 3:14
“But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it.”
| Terms | Variants | Theological Meaning in Context | Gujarati Rendering / Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| continue μένε (menō, imperative) remain, stay, abide | to stay in a place/state; to persist ”continue,” “abide,” “remain” | Timothy is charged to persevere in what he was taught, in contrast to the deceivers of 3:13 who “go on from bad to worse.” This is the hinge verb of the whole core passage. | રહેવું / ટકી રહેવું (raheʼvũ / ṭakī raheʼvũ). Medium — must not be flattened to a one-time “believe”; conveys ongoing perseverance, connecting to the Perseverance-under-Suffering doctrine. |
| learned ἔμαθες (emathes, from manthanō) to learn, come to know | learning by instruction ”learned,” “have been taught” | Refers to catechetical instruction Timothy received from Paul and his family (1:5). | શીખ્યું (śīkhyũ). Low. |
| firmly believed / were assured of ἐπιστώθης (epistōthēs, from pistoō) to be made firm, be assured, be convinced | conviction/certainty, root shares πίστις “faith" "have firmly believed,” “were assured of,” “have been convinced of” | Not mere cognitive assent but settled conviction — the same root family as πίστις/faith. | ખાતરી થઈ / ચોક્કસ વિશ્વાસ થયો (khātrī thaī). Medium — keep the visible link to વિશ્વાસ (established faith term) so the reader recognizes the shared root; do not substitute a word unrelated to વિશ્વાસ. |
2 Timothy 3:15
“and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.”
| Terms | Variants | Theological Meaning | Gujarati Rendering / Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| sacred writings ἱερὰ γράμματα (hiera grammata) holy letters/writings | the OT scriptures as a body of sacred documents ”sacred writings,” “holy Scriptures,” “Scriptures” | The Old Testament Timothy learned from his Jewish mother/grandmother (1:5); the same body of writings Paul calls πᾶσα γραφή in v.16. | પવિત્રશાસ્ત્ર (Pavitra Śāstra). Critical — must render identically to γραφή below for doctrinal consistency (this is the doctrine already named in the baseline registry as “પવિત્રશાસ્ત્રની પ્રેરણા”). Never bare શાસ્ત્ર alone, which in Gujarati religious usage names any authoritative treatise (Hindu darshana-śāstra, Jain āgama-śāstra) without implying divine origin. |
| able to make wise σοφίσαι (sophisai, from sophizō) to make wise, instruct in wisdom | teaching toward practical/saving wisdom ”make you wise,” “instruct you” | Scripture’s God-given purpose is to lead specifically to salvation, not general wisdom or enlightenment. | જ્ઞાની/ડાહ્યા બનાવવા સમર્થ (jñānī/ḍāhyā banāvavā samarth). High — avoid જ્ઞાન-heavy phrasing that could suggest self-attained enlightenment (see ἐπίγνωσις note in ch. 2 and ch. 3 below); anchor tightly to “for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus” so wisdom here is revealed, received wisdom, not gnosis. |
| salvation σωτηρίαν (sōtērian) [REUSE] ઉદ્ધાર | — “salvation” | Deliverance through Christ, per baseline Critical-risk term. Never મોક્ષ/મુક્તિ/કેવલજ્ઞાન/સિદ્ધત્વ. | ઉદ્ધાર. Critical [REUSE from baseline]. |
| through faith διὰ πίστεως (dia pisteōs) [REUSE] વિશ્વાસ | — “through faith” | The instrumental means of salvation; personal trust in Christ, not devotional reverence generally. | વિશ્વાસ. High [REUSE]. |
| in Christ Jesus ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ [REUSE] ખ્રિસ્ત ઈસુમાં | — “in Christ Jesus” | The exclusive object/locus of saving faith. | ખ્રિસ્ત ઈસુ. Critical [REUSE]. |
2 Timothy 3:16
“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.”
| Terms | Variants | Theological Meaning | Gujarati Rendering / Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| All Scripture πᾶσα γραφή (pasa graphē) every writing / all Scripture | the entire body of God-given writings, or “every Scripture (passage)" "all Scripture,” “every scripture,” “the whole of Scripture” | Foundational text for the Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture doctrine — grounds the total trustworthiness of the OT canon Paul has just referenced. | પવિત્રશાસ્ત્ર — “સર્વ પવિત્રશાસ્ત્ર” (sarva Pavitra Śāstra). Critical — the word “સર્વ” (all/every) must not be dropped; this is the doctrinal ground for sufficiency, i.e. no scripture is exempt from divine origin. |
| breathed out by God / inspired θεόπνευστος (theopneustos) God-breathed (θεός “god” + πνέω “breathe/blow”) | a hapax legomenon in the NT; describes the origin of Scripture as God’s own breath/speech, not human insight, not a channeled revelation received in trance ”God-breathed,” “inspired by God,” “given by inspiration of God” | The single most load-bearing word for the Inspiration doctrine. Scripture did not originate in human wisdom or mystical experience but in God’s own speech-act. | પરમેશ્વર-પ્રેરિત (Parmeśvar-prerit). CRITICAL. Two distinct risks: (1) the root પ્રેરિત is already the established baseline rendering for “apostle” (પ્રેરિત = “sent one”); reusing it here for “God-breathed” risks a false semantic link between “inspired” and “sent” — always keep the compound પરમેશ્વર-પ્રેરિત intact, never bare પ્રેરિત. (2) Must be sharply distinguished from Hindu śruti (truth eternally “heard” by ancient rishis, requiring no personal divine author) and from the Jain Āgamas (scriptures merely preserving a Tirthankara’s remembered teaching, with no creator-God as source). θεόπνευστος asserts a personal God actively breathing out these specific words. |
| profitable ὠφέλιμος (ōphelimos) useful, beneficial, profitable | practical benefit ”profitable,” “useful,” “beneficial” | Scripture’s inspiration issues directly in practical usefulness for the church. | ઉપયોગી/લાભદાયક (upayogī/lābhdāyak). Low. |
| teaching διδασκαλία (didaskalia) teaching, instruction, doctrine | the content taught; can mean either the act of teaching or the body of doctrine taught ”teaching,” “doctrine” | The first of four purposes of Scripture; grounds the Guarding Sound Doctrine theme running through the letter. | ઉપદેશ (updesh). High — ઉપદેશ is the standard Gujarati word for a religious teacher’s discourse, and is used identically of a Hindu guru’s or a Jain muni’s ઉપદેશ. Every occurrence referring to apostolic/scriptural doctrine should be qualified in context (“પરમેશ્વરનો સાચો ઉપદેશ” / “ખ્રિસ્તનો ઉપદેશ”) so it is not read as one teacher’s discourse among many competing options. |
| reproof ἔλεγχος (elegchos) conviction, exposure of fault, refutation | legal/moral conviction of wrong ”reproof,” “rebuke,” “conviction” | Scripture exposes sin and error — directly relevant to refuting the false teachers of ch. 2–3. | દોષ બતાવવો / ઠપકો (doṣ batāvavo/ṭhapko). Medium. |
| correction ἐπανόρθωσις (epanorthōsis) restoration, setting right, correction | restoring something to its proper condition (hapax in NT) “correction,” “setting things straight” | Scripture not only exposes error but restores right belief/conduct. | સુધારો (sudhāro). Low-Medium. |
| training παιδεία (paideia) upbringing, discipline, instruction (often with a corrective/disciplinary sense) | child-rearing/discipline vocabulary; formation over time ”training,” “instruction,” “discipline” | Scripture forms character over time, as a parent trains a child — an ongoing, relational process, not a one-time ritual purification. | કેળવણી / શિક્ષણ (keḷvaṇī/śikṣaṇ). Medium — avoid a term that suggests ascetic self-training (તપ-શિક્ષણ); this is God’s Word forming the believer, not self-imposed austerity. |
| righteousness δικαιοσύνη (dikaiosynē) [REUSE] ન્યાયીપણું | — “righteousness” | Here, righteous living that flows from Scripture’s formation — consistent with baseline’s forensic-then-lived sense; never ધર્મ. | ન્યાયીપણું. Critical [REUSE]. |
2 Timothy 3:17
“that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”
| Terms | Variants | Theological Meaning | Gujarati Rendering / Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| man of God ὁ τοῦ θεοῦ ἄνθρωπος (ho tou theou anthrōpos) the person belonging to God | an OT-flavored title (used of Moses, Elijah, etc.) now applied to any believer/minister shaped by Scripture ”man of God,” “person who belongs to God” | Everyone formed by God-breathed Scripture, not a special ascetic or priestly class. | પરમેશ્વરનો માણસ / પરમેશ્વરનો ભક્તજન (Parmeśvarno māṇas). Medium — keep plain “person belonging to God”; avoid a term implying an ordained/monastic elite (parallel risk to સંતો/મુનિ already flagged for “saints” in the baseline). |
| complete ἄρτιος (artios) fitted, complete, proficient | fully qualified/adequate for a task ”complete,” “proficient,” “perfect” | Scripture is sufficient to fully form the believer — the doctrinal climax of the Sufficiency of Scripture theme. | પરિપૂર્ણ / સંપૂર્ણ સજ્જ (paripūrṇa). Medium. |
| equipped ἐξηρτισμένος (exērtismenos, from exartizō) fully outfitted, furnished, equipped | outfitting for a task (nautical/military background — “fully rigged”) “equipped,” “thoroughly furnished” | Reinforces ἄρτιος: Scripture alone furnishes for every good work, no supplementary source of authority needed. | સજ્જ કરાયેલ (sajja karāyel). Medium. |
| every good work πᾶν ἔργον ἀγαθόν (pan ergon agathon) every good deed | the full range of Christian obedience ”every good work” | Good works flow from Scripture’s formation, not from independent merit-generating effort. | પ્રત્યેક સારું કામ (pratyek sārũ kām). Medium — in a passage this close to “training in righteousness,” ensure the phrase is not read as merit accumulated toward salvation (પુણ્ય), consistent with baseline’s Grace/Righteousness cautions. |
2 Timothy 4:1
“I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom.”
| Terms | Variants | Theological Meaning | Gujarati Rendering / Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| I charge you διαμαρτύρομαι (diamartyromai) to solemnly testify, charge under witness | a formal, legally-flavored solemn charge invoking witnesses ”I charge you,” “I solemnly testify” | Introduces the most weighty command of the letter — the charge to preach the Word — with courtroom-level solemnity. | ગંભીરતાથી આજ્ઞા આપું છું / સાક્ષી રાખીને ચેતવણી આપું છું (gambhīrtāthī āgnā āpũ chũ). High — must retain the sense of a formal, witnessed charge, not a casual request. |
| in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus ἐνώπιον τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ before God and Christ Jesus | invoking both Father and Son as witnesses to the charge ”in the presence of,” “before” | God ([REUSE] પરમેશ્વર) and Christ Jesus ([REUSE] ખ્રિસ્ત ઈસુ) jointly stand as witnesses — implicitly affirms Christ’s deity alongside the Father. | પરમેશ્વર અને ખ્રિસ્ત ઈસુની સમક્ષ. Critical [REUSE of God/Christ terms]. |
| judge the living and the dead κρίνειν ζῶντας καὶ νεκρούς (krinein zōntas kai nekrous) to judge those living and those dead | Christ’s role as universal eschatological judge over all humanity, living or already deceased ”judge the living and the dead” | Grounds the Assurance-of-Reward doctrine: the same Christ who will reward faithful ministry (4:8) is the one who judges all. | જીવતાં અને મૂએલાંનો ન્યાય કરનાર (jīvtā ane muelāno nyāya karnār). High — reuse the ન્યાય root shared with ન્યાયીપણું/ન્યાયી ઠરાવવું so the judgment and justification word-family stays visibly connected in Gujarati. |
| his appearing ἐπιφάνεια (epiphaneia) manifestation, appearing | Paul’s term (also 1:10; 4:8) for a decisive, visible manifestation of Christ; used of the incarnation in 1:10 and of the Second Coming here and in 4:8 ”his appearing,” “his coming,” “manifestation” | Two distinct doctrinal referents share one Greek word: (a) 1:10 = the historical incarnation-manifestation, tied to the existing Incarnation doctrine (baseline: never અવતાર); (b) 4:1, 4:8 = the still-future Second Coming, a new doctrinal category for this curriculum (undergirds Assurance of Reward). | પ્રગટન / પ્રગટ થવું (pragaṭan). Critical. Must not be rendered with a term suggesting a repeatable divine descent (અવતાર-adjacent), since Vaishnav avatar theology envisions exactly such repeated appearings. For 4:1/4:8 specifically, a translator note should clarify “his appearing” = the future, final, once-for-all return of Christ, not a new cycle of manifestation. |
| his kingdom ἡ βασιλεία αὐτοῦ (hē basileia autou) [REUSE pattern] રાજ્ય | — “his kingdom” | Christ’s reign, consistent with baseline’s “kingdom_of_god” (not territorial/political). | તેમનું રાજ્ય. Medium [REUSE pattern from પરમેશ્વરનું રાજ્ય]. |
2 Timothy 4:2
“preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.”
| Terms | Variants | Theological Meaning | Gujarati Rendering / Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| preach κήρυξον (kēryxon, imperative of kēryssō) to herald, proclaim as a herald | a herald’s public, authoritative proclamation, not private opinion-sharing ”preach,” “proclaim” | The central verb of the Charge-to-Preach-the-Word doctrine; a herald announces a message that is not his own. | પ્રચાર કરવો / જાહેર કરવો (prachār karavo). High — the herald-nuance (announcing another’s authoritative message) should be preserved in teaching notes even where the single verb પ્રચાર is used, so preaching is not read as personal opinion or motivational speaking. |
| the word τὸν λόγον (ton logon) the word / the message | in context, shorthand for “the word of God” / the apostolic gospel message already entrusted to Timothy (1:13-14, 2:2) “the word,” “the Word of God” | The content Timothy must guard, transmit, and proclaim — ties directly to Faithful Transmission of the Gospel. | વચન / પરમેશ્વરનું વચન (vachan/Parmeśvarnũ vachan). High — where λόγος stands alone for the apostolic message, render consistently as વચન (or, where clarity requires, પરમેશ્વરનું વચન) rather than the more literal “શબ્દ” (mere “word/utterance”), which loses the sense of an authoritative message-body. |
| be ready ἐπίστηθι (epistēthi, imperative of ephistēmi) stand by, be at hand, be urgent | readiness/urgency, standing at one’s post ”be ready,” “be urgent,” “be persistent” | Continuous readiness to proclaim, not occasional or convenient preaching. | તૈયાર રહો (taiyār raho). Low-Medium. |
| in season and out of season εὐκαίρως ἀκαίρως (eukairōs akairōs) opportunely, inopportunely | idiom for “whether convenient or not" "in season, out of season” | Preaching is not conditioned on favorable circumstance. | અનુકૂળ હોય કે ન હોય ત્યારે (anukūḷ hoy ke na hoy tyāre). Low — render the sense, not a literal word-for-word idiom. |
| reprove ἔλεγξον (elegxon, imperative of elegchō) to expose fault, convict, refute | verb form of ἔλεγχος (3:16) “reprove,” “correct,” “convict” | Doctrinal correction directed at error, continuing 3:16’s fourfold purpose of Scripture now as a preaching task. | દોષ બતાવવો / ખોટું સાબિત કરવું (doṣ batāvavo). Medium — keep visibly linked to ἔλεγχος in 3:16. |
| rebuke ἐπιτίμησον (epitimēson, imperative of epitimaō) to rebuke, censure sharply | stronger than “reprove,” a direct sharp correction of a person ”rebuke,” “warn sternly” | Direct, personal confrontation of sin/error — part of guarding sound doctrine within the church. | ધમકાવવું / સખત ચેતવણી આપવી (dhamkāvavũ). Medium. |
| exhort παρακάλεσον (parakaleson, imperative of parakaleō) [REUSE] પ્રોત્સાહન આપવું / વિનંતી | — “exhort,” “encourage” | Baseline’s context-sensitive term: here it is positive encouragement alongside correction, not entreaty. | પ્રોત્સાહન આપવું. Low [REUSE]. |
| complete patience πάσῃ μακροθυμίᾳ (pasē makrothymia) with all long-suffering / with every kind of patience | forbearance, slowness to anger, endurance with people ”with great patience,” “with complete patience” | Preaching/correction must be done with sustained patience, not harsh haste — softens the preceding stern verbs. | પૂરી સહનશીલતાથી / સંપૂર્ણ ધીરજથી (pūrī sahanśīltāthī). Low-Medium. |
| teaching διδαχῇ (didachē) [cf. διδασκαλία above] ઉપદેશ | — “teaching” | Same doctrinal-vocabulary family as διδασκαλία; keep rendering consistent. | ઉપદેશ. High [same risk as διδασκαλία above]. |
2 Timothy 4:3
“For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itchy ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions.”
| Terms | Variants | Theological Meaning | Gujarati Rendering / Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| the time is coming ὁ καιρός (ho kairos) the appointed/critical time | a qualitative, decisive season, not mere clock-time (chronos) “the time,” “a time” | Anticipates the “last days” apostasy pattern described in 3:1-9 — this is not a remote hypothetical but a recurring pastoral reality. | સમય આવશે (samay āvśe). Medium. |
| will not endure οὐκ ἀνέξονται (ouk anexontai, from anechomai) will not put up with, will not bear | tolerance/patience toward something difficult ”will not endure,” “will not put up with” | People will actively reject, not merely neglect, sound teaching. | સહન નહિ કરે (sahan nahĩ kare). Medium. |
| sound teaching / sound doctrine ὑγιαινούσης διδασκαλίας (hygiainousēs didaskalias) healthy teaching | ὑγιαίνω = to be healthy (medical metaphor) applied to doctrine ”sound doctrine,” “healthy teaching,” “wholesome teaching” | The central term for the Guarding Sound Doctrine theme — doctrine is either “healthy” (life-giving, correctly formed) or diseased (cf. γάγγραινα, “gangrene,” 2:17). | તંદુરસ્ત ઉપદેશ (tandurast updesh). CRITICAL. Deliberately built on તંદુરસ્ત (“healthy,” a common non-religious Gujarati word) rather than શુદ્ધ (“pure,” rejected elsewhere in the baseline for its Jain ritual/ascetic-purity overtones), so the medical metaphor of “healthy vs. diseased” doctrine is preserved without triggering purity-through-effort associations. |
| itching ears κνηθόμενοι τὴν ἀκοήν (knēthomenoi tēn akoēn) being scratched/tickled in hearing | a vivid idiom for insatiable curiosity that seeks novelty rather than truth ”itching ears,” “wanting to hear something new” | Describes consumeristic spirituality — seeking teachers who scratch a felt itch rather than proclaim truth. | કાનમાં ખંજવાળ (kānmā khaṅjvāḷ), i.e. “કાનમાં ખંજવાળ આવવાથી નવું નવું સાંભળવા ઇચ્છવું.” Medium — preserve the vivid idiom; do not flatten to abstract “curiosity.” |
| accumulate for themselves teachers ἐπισωρεύσουσιν ἑαυτοῖς διδασκάλους (episōreusousin heautois didaskalous) will heap up/pile up for themselves teachers | accumulating many teachers, shopping for agreeable voices ”will gather/accumulate teachers for themselves” | Directly relevant to Apostasy and False Teachers: multiplying teachers who please rather than one truth that confronts. | પોતાના માટે શિક્ષકોનો ઢગલો કરવો (potānā māṭe śikṣakono ḍhagalo karavo). Medium-High — must not soften “accumulate/heap up” to a neutral “find teachers”; the excess/collecting nuance is the point. |
| passions ἐπιθυμίας (epithymias) desires, cravings, lusts | strong desire, morally neutral in secular Greek but consistently negative in Paul when unqualified (cf. 3:6) “passions,” “desires,” “own liking” | Self-chosen teaching driven by what hearers want to hear, not what is true — the root of apostasy in the last days. | પોતાની ઇચ્છાઓ / વાસનાઓ (potānī icchāo/vāsanāo). Medium. |
2 Timothy 4:4
“and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.”
| Terms | Variants | Theological Meaning | Gujarati Rendering / Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| turn away from ἀποστρέψουσιν (apostrepsousin, from apostrephō) to turn away, avert | deliberate rejection/rejection-in-motion, same verb as 1:15 (“all in Asia turned away from me”) “turn away from,” “turn a deaf ear to” | Key verb of the Apostasy doctrine — describes willful abandonment of the truth already known, not innocent ignorance. | મુખ ફેરવવું / વિમુખ થવું (mukh pherāvavũ/vimukh thavũ). High — this verb family (with ἐκτρέπομαι and ἀστοχέω, see ch. 2 below) forms the core apostasy vocabulary of the letter; render consistently across all occurrences. |
| listening to the truth τῆς ἀληθείας ἀκούειν (tēs alētheias akouein) hearing of the truth | ἀλήθεια = truth, here specifically the truth of the gospel/apostolic doctrine ”the truth” | The truth is a specific, receivable content (the apostolic gospel), not an abstract cosmic principle to be philosophically discovered. | સત્ય (satya). High — સત્ય is also the central term of Hindu/Jain ethical-philosophical vocabulary (one of the five Jain mahāvratas is satya; “Satya” is a cardinal Gandhian/Hindu virtue-concept). Every occurrence in this letter must be anchored to a specific, revealed, apostolic content (“સુવાર્તાનું સત્ય” / “ખ્રિસ્ત વિષેનું સત્ય”) rather than left as free-floating abstract Truth. |
| wander off ἐκτραπήσονται (ektrapēsontai, from ektrepomai) to be turned aside, diverted, to wander off the path | a path/journey metaphor for departure from right doctrine (also used in 1 Tim 1:6, 6:20) “turn aside,” “wander away” | Same apostasy-word-family; the destination is telling — not simply “away” but into myths. | ભટકી જવું (bhaṭkī javũ). High [apostasy family, cf. above]. |
| myths μύθους (mythous) myths, fables, invented tales | stories/teachings without historical or revelatory grounding, contrasted with ἀλήθεια ”myths,” “fables,” “made-up stories” | The alternative to sound doctrine is not “no religion” but other religious narratives — directly relevant to a pluralistic Gujarati context with many competing sacred narratives. | કલ્પિત વાર્તાઓ / પુરાણકથાઓ (kalpit vārtāo). High — avoid the word પુરાણ-linked vocabulary (પુરાણકથા evokes the Hindu Purāṇas, a specific scripture category) as a literal equivalent; prefer the more generic કલ્પિત વાર્તાઓ (“invented/fictional stories”) so the term critiques invented teaching in general rather than naming a specific scripture corpus by implication. |
2 Timothy 4:5
“As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.”
| Terms | Variants | Theological Meaning | Gujarati Rendering / Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| be sober-minded νῆφε (nēphe, imperative of nēphō) be sober, be free from intoxication (literal or figurative) | clear-headed watchfulness, alertness against deception ”be sober-minded,” “keep your head,” “be watchful” | Direct contrast to those “wandering into myths” in v.4 — clear-headed discernment is the antidote to doctrinal drift. | સાવધ / સ્વસ્થ મનના રહો (sāvadh raho). Medium. |
| endure suffering κακοπάθησον (kakopathēson, imperative of kakopatheō) suffer hardship, endure evil/affliction | enduring hardship for the sake of ministry (same verb as 2:3, 2:9) “endure suffering,” “endure hardship” | Central verb of the Perseverance-under-Suffering doctrine, directly linking this charge to Paul’s own example (1:8, 2:3, 2:9, 3:11-12). | દુઃખ સહન કરો (dukh sahan karo). Medium-High — reuse consistently with 2:3, 2:9, 1:8 so the letter’s suffering-vocabulary is visibly unified. |
| do the work of an evangelist ἔργον ποίησον εὐαγγελιστοῦ (ergon poiēson euangelistou) do the work of a gospel-announcer | εὐαγγελιστής, from the established root εὐαγγέλιον (“gospel”) — one who proclaims the good news ”do the work of an evangelist” | Directly builds on the baseline’s established સુવાર્તા (gospel) root — the evangelist is one who does the work of proclaiming this specific, singular gospel, not a general religious teacher. | સુવાર્તિકનું કામ કરો (suvārtiknũ kām karo). Medium — સુવાર્તિક is a natural derivation from the already-established સુવાર્તા (baseline gospel term); keep this root visible rather than introducing an unrelated word for “evangelist.” |
| fulfill your ministry τὴν διακονίαν σου πληροφόρησον (tēn diakonian sou plērophorēson) fully carry out/complete your service | διακονία = service/ministry; πληροφορέω = to fully accomplish, bring to completion ”fulfill your ministry,” “discharge all the duties of your ministry” | Ties the whole charge (4:1-5) to Assurance of Reward in 4:6-8: faithful completion of ministry precedes the crown. | તારી સેવા પૂરેપૂરી કર (tārī sevā pūrepūrī kar). Medium. |
PART B — Chapter-by-Chapter Study of the Whole Book
Chapter 1
Chapter 1 establishes the letter’s relational and doctrinal foundation: Paul’s apostleship, Timothy’s inherited faith, the nature of the gospel gift, and the charge not to be ashamed of Christ’s testimony — introducing the Faithful Transmission and Perseverance-under-Suffering doctrines before the core passage develops them.
| Terms | Variants | Theological Meaning | Gujarati Rendering / Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| grace, mercy, peace χάρις, ἔλεος, εἰρήνη (charis, eleos, eirēnē) grace, mercy, peace | standard epistolary greeting triad (grace/mercy added to Paul’s usual grace/peace) “grace, mercy, and peace” | Grace [REUSE] કૃપા; peace [REUSE] શાંતિ. Mercy is new. | ἔλεος → દયા (dayā). Medium — દયા is a safe, non-collision Gujarati word for compassionate mercy; distinguish from “grace” (કૃપા, unmerited favor) — mercy is God’s compassion toward the miserable, grace his favor toward the undeserving; keep both distinct in teaching. |
| apostle ἀπόστολος (apostolos) [REUSE] પ્રેરિત | — “apostle” | Paul’s commissioned, sent authority, grounding his right to charge Timothy. | પ્રેરિત. Medium [REUSE]. |
| by the will of God διὰ θελήματος θεοῦ (dia thelēmatos theou) through/by the will of God | God’s purposive intention as the ground of apostolic calling ”by the will of God” | Ties apostleship to divine sovereignty, echoing the Providence doctrine established in Romans. | પરમેશ્વરની ઇચ્છાથી (Parmeśvarnī icchāthī). Medium. |
| promise of life ἐπαγγελία ζωῆς (epangelia zōēs) promise of life | ζωή here = resurrection/eternal life, promised in Christ ”promise of life,” “promise of the life” | Anchors the whole letter’s hope in a divine promise, not a human aspiration. | જીવનનું વચન (jīvannũ vachan). Medium — reuse વચન consistently with the “the word” (λόγος → વચન) rendering elsewhere so “promise” and “word” share a visible root. |
| beloved child ἀγαπητῷ τέκνῳ (agapētō teknō) beloved child | affectionate, spiritual-parental language (cf. γνήσιος τέκνον, “true child,” 1 Tim 1:2) “beloved child,” “dear son” | Establishes the warm, discipling relationship framing the whole letter’s charge. | વહાલા દીકરા (vahālā dīkarā). Low. |
| conscience συνείδησις (syneidēsis) conscience, moral self-awareness | the inward faculty of moral self-judgment ”conscience” | Paul’s clear conscience grounds his confident suffering (1:3, cf. 1:12). | અંતઃકરણ (antaḥkaraṇ) or વિવેક (vivek). Medium — અંતઃકરણ is also a technical term in Vedantic philosophy (part of the “inner instrument” - manas/buddhi/chitta/ahamkara); acceptable as the standard Gujarati Christian rendering but flag for translator awareness, not a forbidden term. |
| sincere/unhypocritical faith ἀνυπόκριτος πίστις (anypokritos pistis) unhypocritical faith | πίστις [REUSE] વિશ્વાસ + qualifier “without pretense" "sincere faith,” “unfeigned faith” | Faith that is genuine, inherited through godly family transmission (Lois, Eunice) — models Faithful Transmission across generations. | નિષ્કપટ વિશ્વાસ (niṣkapaṭ viśvās). Medium [REUSE of વિશ્વાસ]. |
| stir up / rekindle ἀναζωπυρεῖν (anazōpyrein) to kindle again, fan into flame | fire-imagery for reviving something already present but dormant ”stir up,” “fan into flame,” “rekindle” | The spiritual gift is not newly acquired but already given and needing active, ongoing exercise — relevant to Perseverance. | પ્રગટાવવું / સળગાવવું (pragaṭāvavũ). Low-Medium. |
| gift of God χάρισμα θεοῦ (charisma theou) God’s grace-gift | [REUSE concept] આત્મિક કૃપાદાન, though here referring to Timothy’s specific ministry gift received via the laying on of hands, rather than gifts distributed generally to believers. ”gift of God,” “gift” | Individual, Spirit-given empowerment for ministry — not self-attained “siddhi.” | આત્મિક કૃપાદાન. Medium [REUSE]. |
| spirit of fear / spirit of power, love, self-control πνεῦμα δειλίας / πνεῦμα δυνάμεως καὶ ἀγάπης καὶ σωφρονισμοῦ spirit of cowardice / spirit of power, love, and sound-mindedness | δειλία = cowardice/timidity; δύναμις [REUSE] સામર્થ્ય; ἀγάπη = love; σωφρονισμός = self-discipline/sound judgment ”fear/timidity” vs. “power, love, and self-control/sound mind” | Grounds courageous perseverance in the Spirit’s character, not human resolve. | બીકનો આત્મા (bīkno ātmā) vs. સામર્થ્ય, પ્રેમ અને સ્વસ્થ મનનો આત્મા. Medium-High — for σωφρονισμός avoid સંયમ (a core term for Jain ascetic self-restraint/vow-discipline); prefer સ્વસ્થ મન (sound/healthy-mindedness) to keep the sense of Spirit-given clear judgment rather than self-achieved ascetic control. |
| ashamed ἐπαισχύνομαι (epaischynomai) to be ashamed | shame in the honor/shame social sense — refusing to be identified with someone/something out of fear of dishonor ”ashamed” | Repeated refrain (1:8, 1:12, 1:16) — not being ashamed of the gospel, of Paul’s imprisonment, or of Christ, models faithful public identification under social pressure. | શરમાવું (śarmāvũ). Medium — significant in an honor/shame-sensitive culture; flag for native-speaker review per baseline’s honor/shame guidance. |
| testimony μαρτύριον (martyrion) testimony, witness | the gospel witness Paul is not ashamed of ”testimony,” “witness” | Connects to the Faithful Transmission doctrine — a message received and passed on by witness. | સાક્ષી (sākṣī). Low-Medium. |
| save / salvation σῴζω (sōzō) [REUSE] ઉદ્ધાર (verb form) | — “saved,” “save” | See baseline; Critical. | ઉદ્ધાર/બચાવવું. Critical [REUSE]. |
| holy calling κλῆσις ἁγία (klēsis hagia) [REUSE] તેડું (calling) + પવિત્ર (holy) | — “holy calling” | Reuses both baseline terms in combination; the calling is God’s initiative, not human seeking (cf. baseline’s guru-diksha caution). | પવિત્ર તેડું. High [REUSE of both terms]. |
| purpose πρόθεσις (prothesis) plan, purpose, intention set forth beforehand | God’s predetermined intention, related to the Election/Providence doctrine family ”purpose,” “own purpose” | Salvation is grounded in God’s own eternal purpose, not human merit or cosmic law. | પોતાનો હેતુ / યોજના (potāno hetu/yojnā). Medium — related to Providence doctrine (પરમેશ્વરનું વિધાન); avoid rendering with karma-adjacent vocabulary. |
| before the ages began πρὸ χρόνων αἰωνίων (pro chronōn aiōniōn) before times of the ages | αἰών = age/eon; here denoting eternity past, before creation ”before the ages began,” “before time began” | Grace given in eternity past — not earned within any cycle of time, and not part of a repeating cosmic age-cycle (cf. baseline’s caution on cyclical time in Fulfillment of Prophecy). | અનંતકાળ પહેલાં (anantkāḷ pahelā). High — must communicate a linear “before all time” origin-point, not one turn within a beginningless-endless cosmic cycle (a live risk given both Hindu yuga-cycles and Jain cosmology, already flagged in the baseline’s Fulfillment-of-Prophecy doctrine). |
| appearing ἐπιφάνεια (epiphaneia) [see 4:1 analysis] પ્રગટન | — “appearing” | Here (1:10) = the first appearing, i.e. the Incarnation. | પ્રગટન, tied explicitly to દેહધારણ (established Incarnation term). Critical [see full note at 4:1]. |
| Savior σωτῆρ (sōtēr) savior, deliverer | one who rescues/delivers ”Savior” | Titled directly of Christ (also used of God the Father, 1:9’s “God our Savior” pattern continues from 1 Tim); grounds both the Incarnation and Salvation doctrines Christologically. | તારણહાર (tāraṇhār). CRITICAL — તારણ/તારક is also the operative verb-root in Vaishnav devotional language for “ferrying/carrying [a soul] across” the ocean of saṃsāra (bhava-sāgar tāraṇ), an extremely common Gujarati devotional image (cf. Dwarka’s Vaishnav centrality, already flagged in the baseline). તારણહાર must always be taught as the one who delivers through a single historical death-and-resurrection event, not a guide who ferries souls through an ongoing cycle of rebirth. |
| abolished death καταργήσαντος τὸν θάνατον (katargēsantos ton thanaton) having nullified/rendered inoperative death | καταργέω = to make void, abolish, render powerless ”abolished death,” “destroyed death,” “put an end to death” | Death’s power is ended once for all — not merely postponed through another cycle of rebirth. | મરણને રદ કર્યું / મરણનો નાશ કર્યો (maraṇne rad karyũ). High — must not be softened to “escaped death” or “overcame death temporarily”; connects directly to the Resurrection doctrine’s “once for all” emphasis, contra transmigration. |
| life and immortality ζωὴ καὶ ἀφθαρσία (zōē kai aphtharsia) life and incorruption | ἀφθαρσία = imperishability, freedom from decay ”life and immortality,” “life and incorruptibility” | The gospel brings to light an imperishable life — distinct from an endlessly repeating cycle of embodied existence. | જીવન અને અવિનાશીપણું (jīvan ane avināśīpaṇũ). Medium-High — “અવિનાશી” (imperishable/undecaying) is preferable to any term suggesting the soul’s own inherent, self-existing eternality (a Jain metaphysical premise about the soul); here immortality is a gift disclosed through the gospel, not an intrinsic property already possessed by every soul. |
| brought to light φωτίσαντος (phōtisantos, from phōtizō) to illumine, bring to light | making visible/known something previously hidden ”brought to light,” “made known” | The gospel unveils what was previously hidden — an act of revelation, not a truth independently discoverable through meditation/ascetic insight. | પ્રગટ કર્યું / અજવાળામાં લાવ્યું (pragaṭ karyũ). Medium — avoid heavy light-imagery vocabulary that could merge with kevala-jñāna’s “infinite light of omniscience” motif, already flagged in the baseline under “glory.” |
| preacher, apostle, teacher κήρυξ, ἀπόστολος, διδάσκαλος herald, sent one, teacher | Paul’s threefold self-description of his commissioned role ”preacher, apostle, and teacher” | κήρυξ (herald) is new; ἀπόστολος [REUSE] પ્રેરિત; διδάσκαλος shares the ઉપદેશ root-family already flagged. | κήρυξ → પ્રચારક (prachārak); διδάσκαλος → ઉપદેશક (updeśak). High — see risk notes on ἐλέγχω/διδασκαλία and κηρύσσω above; keep all three roles distinguishable in Gujarati (સોંપાયેલ પ્રેરિત, પ્રચારક, ઉપદેશક). |
| suffer πάσχω (paschō) to suffer, undergo | general verb for suffering, hardship, affliction ”suffer,” “suffering” | Introduces Perseverance under Suffering as Paul’s explicit self-description (1:12) before it becomes an explicit charge to Timothy (2:3, 4:5). | સહન કરવું / દુઃખ ભોગવવું (sahan karavũ). Medium. |
| the deposit entrusted παρακαταθήκη / ἣν παρέθεντο (parakatathēkē / paretheto, from paratithēmi) a deposit placed in trust; that which was committed | banking/legal metaphor: something valuable handed over for safekeeping, to be returned intact ”what has been entrusted,” “the deposit,” “that which I have committed” | Foundational term for Faithful Transmission of the Gospel: the gospel is a treasure held in trust, to be guarded and passed on unaltered, not personal property or private insight. | સોંપાયેલ થાપણ (soṅpāyel thāpaṇ). High — the banking-deposit metaphor should be preserved (થાપણ = a deposit held for safekeeping in ordinary Gujarati financial usage), reinforcing that the gospel is received, guarded, and returned intact, not something the minister generates or embellishes. |
| guard φυλάξαι (phylaxai, from phylassō) to guard, keep watch over | active, vigilant protection of something valuable, often military/watchman imagery ”guard,” “keep” | The corresponding verb to παρακαταθήκη — Timothy’s task is to guard, not to alter, the entrusted gospel. Central verb for Guarding Sound Doctrine. | જાળવવું / રક્ષણ કરવું (jāḷavavũ/rakṣaṇ karavũ). High — keep this verb visually/lexically distinct from φυλάσσω’s cousin τηρέω (4:7, “kept the faith”) if possible, or note the overlap; both describe vigilant, active preservation, not passive possession. |
| pattern of sound words ὑποτύπωσις ὑγιαινόντων λόγων (hypotypōsis hygiainontōn logōn) a pattern/outline of healthy words | ὑποτύπωσις = a sketch, outline, model to be copied; ὑγιαίνω = to be healthy (cf. 4:3’s “sound teaching”) “the pattern of sound words,” “the standard/model of sound teaching” | Timothy is to hold apostolic teaching as a fixed pattern, not a starting point for innovation — key to Guarding Sound Doctrine. | તંદુરસ્ત વચનોનો નમૂનો (tandurast vachanono namūno). High — reuse તંદુરસ્ત (established at 4:3 “sound teaching”) for lexical consistency across the whole letter’s “healthy doctrine” motif. |
| faith and love πίστις καὶ ἀγάπη (pistis kai agapē) [REUSE] વિશ્વાસ + પ્રેમ (love) | — “faith and love” | The pattern of sound words is held “in faith and love,” i.e., not merely intellectually but relationally, in union with Christ. | વિશ્વાસ અને પ્રેમમાં. High [REUSE of વિશ્વાસ]; પ્રેમ Low risk. |
| turned away from me ἀπεστράφησάν με (apestraphēsan me, from apostrephō) turned away from me | same verb as 4:4 — the first occurrence of the apostasy word-family in the letter ”turned away from me,” “deserted me” | Establishes the pattern (personal desertion in ministry, 1:15) that becomes doctrinal (turning from truth, 4:4). | મુખ ફેરવ્યું / છોડી ગયા (mukh phervyũ). High [apostasy family, keep consistent with 4:4]. |
Chapter 2
Chapter 2 develops the Faithful Transmission of the Gospel through multiple images (soldier, athlete, farmer), grounds Perseverance in Christ’s resurrection, and gives the letter’s clearest positive statement on Guarding Sound Doctrine against the specific errors of Hymenaeus and Philetus — introducing the letter’s most extensive vocabulary for both doctrines.
| Terms | Variants | Theological Meaning | Gujarati Rendering / Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| be strengthened ἐνδυναμοῦ (endynamou, from endynamoō) be empowered, be made strong (imperative) | passive-form imperative — strengthening received, not self-generated ”be strengthened” | Ministry endurance flows from grace received in Christ, not personal willpower — same theological shape as baseline’s grace doctrine. | સામર્થ્ય પામ (sāmarthya pām). Medium — reuse the સામર્થ્ય root (baseline’s “power of God” term) rather than an unrelated word for “strength,” to keep the letter’s power-vocabulary unified. |
| commit / entrust παράθου (parathou, from paratithēmi) commit, hand over for safekeeping | same verb family as παρακαταθήκη (1:12/1:14) “entrust,” “commit,” “commend” | 2:2’s programmatic verse: Paul → Timothy → faithful men → others — a chain of entrusted transmission, the structural picture of Faithful Transmission across generations. | સોંપવું (soṅpavũ). High — reuse consistently with the “entrusted deposit” term family (1:12,1:14, 2:2). |
| faithful men πιστοῖς ἀνθρώποις (pistois anthrōpois) [REUSE] વિશ્વાસુ માણસો (adjective form of વિશ્વાસ) | — “faithful men” | Trustworthy transmitters of the gospel deposit. | વિશ્વાસુ માણસો. Medium [REUSE root]. |
| soldier στρατιώτης (stratiōtēs) soldier | military-service metaphor for single-minded devotion ”soldier” | One of three vocational images (soldier, athlete, farmer) for Perseverance and undivided focus on pleasing the one who enlisted him. | સૈનિક (sainik). Low. |
| enlisted στρατολογήσαντι (stratologēsanti, from stratologeō) one who enlisted/conscripted | military recruitment vocabulary ”who enlisted him” | The soldier serves at another’s initiative, not his own — echoes the Calling doctrine’s emphasis on divine initiative. | ભરતી કરનાર (bhartī karnār). Low-Medium. |
| compete as an athlete ἀθλῇ (athlē, from athleō) to compete in athletic games | competitive-games metaphor requiring rule-keeping ”competes as an athlete” | Second vocational image; disciplined effort within legitimate rules, not self-invented spirituality. | ખેલાડી તરીકે રમવું / સ્પર્ધામાં ભાગ લેવો (kheḷāḍī tarīke ramavũ). Low. |
| according to the rules νομίμως (nomimōs) lawfully, according to the rules | conformity to established competition-rules ”according to the rules,” “lawfully” | Faithful ministry follows the apostolic pattern (cf. ὑποτύπωσις, 1:13), not innovation. | નિયમ પ્રમાણે (niyam pramāṇe). Low-Medium. |
| farmer γεωργός (geōrgos) farmer, tiller of the soil | agricultural-labor metaphor ”farmer” | Third vocational image: hard, patient labor precedes the harvest — reinforces Perseverance under Suffering. | ખેડૂત (khedūt). Low. |
| consider / understand νόει (noei, from noeō) perceive, understand, consider | reflective comprehension ”consider,” “think over” | Timothy must actively reflect on these images, not passively receive them. | વિચાર (vichār karo). Low. |
| remember μνημόνευε (mnēmoneue, from mnēmoneuō) remember, keep in mind | active, ongoing recollection ”remember” | Remembering Christ’s resurrection grounds all perseverance (2:8). | યાદ રાખો (yād rākho). Low. |
| Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, seed of David Ἰησοῦν Χριστὸν ἐγηγερμένον ἐκ νεκρῶν, ἐκ σπέρματος Δαυίδ [REUSE both] ઈસુ ખ્રિસ્ત, પુનરુત્થાન, દાઉદના વંશમાંથી | — “Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David” | Combines two Critical/High baseline doctrines (Resurrection, Davidic Covenant) as the summary content of “my gospel” (2:8) — the fixed core of what must be transmitted unaltered. | ઈસુ ખ્રિસ્ત, જે મૂએલાંમાંથી પુનરુત્થાન પામ્યા, દાઉદના વંશમાંથી. Critical [REUSE of Resurrection + Davidic Covenant baseline terms]. |
| the word of God is not bound ὁ λόγος τοῦ θεοῦ οὐ δέδεται (ho logos tou theou ou dedetai) the word of God is not bound/chained | δέω = to bind, tie, imprison; contrasted with Paul’s own chains ”the word of God is not bound,” “is not chained” | Even Paul’s imprisonment cannot imprison the gospel message itself — powerful assurance for the Faithful Transmission and Charge-to-Preach doctrines under persecution. | પરમેશ્વરનું વચન બંધનમાં નથી (Parmeśvarnũ vachan bandhanmā nathī). High — reuse વચન (established for λόγος at 4:2) for consistency. |
| endure ὑπομένω (hypomenō) to endure, bear up under, remain steadfast | active, patient endurance under pressure, distinct from passive suffering alone ”endure” | 2:10, 2:12 — endurance is directly tied to the reward/reign-with-Christ promise, connecting Perseverance to Assurance of Reward. | સહન કરવું / ટકી રહેવું (sahan karavũ/ṭakī raheʼvũ). Medium-High — key perseverance verb; keep distinct from κακοπαθέω (suffer hardship) where possible: ὑπομένω emphasizes remaining steadfast through, κακοπαθέω emphasizes the hardship itself. |
| co-reign / reign with him συμβασιλεύσομεν (symbasileusomen, from symbasileuō) to reign together with | shared future royal status with Christ, reuses βασιλεία (kingdom) root ”reign with him” | Ties Perseverance directly to Assurance of Reward — the faithful minister’s future is bound to Christ’s own kingship. | તેમની સાથે રાજ કરીશું (temnī sāthe rāj karīśũ). Medium — reuse the રાજ્ય root established for kingdom_of_god. |
| deny ἀρνησόμεθα / ἀρνήσηται (arnēsometha/arnēsētai, from arneomai) to deny, disown | formal disavowal of relationship/allegiance ”deny,” “disown” | The negative counterpart to faithful confession (cf. baseline’s Romans 10:9 Lordship confession) — introduces the letter’s warning about apostasy under pressure. | નકારવું / ઇન્કાર કરવો (nakāravũ). High — closely related to the apostasy word-family; must be distinguished from ἀπιστέω (unfaithful/unbelieving) in the next clause. |
| if we are faithless, he remains faithful εἰ ἀπιστοῦμεν, ἐκεῖνος πιστὸς μένει (ei apistoumen, ekeinos pistos menei) if we are unfaithful, that one remains faithful | ἀπιστέω = to be unfaithful/unbelieving (negation of πίστις root); πιστός [REUSE] faith-family ”if we are faithless, he remains faithful” | God’s faithfulness is not contingent on ours — grounds Assurance of Reward/Salvation in God’s character rather than human performance, distinct from a karmic ledger that tracks and repays every fluctuation of the devotee. | જો આપણે અવિશ્વાસુ થઈએ, તોપણ તે વિશ્વાસુ રહે છે. High [REUSE of વિશ્વાસ root] — a key verse for distinguishing grace-based assurance from a merit/karma accounting system; flag for theologian review. |
| solemnly charge διαμαρτύρου (diamartyrou, from diamartyromai) [cf. 4:1] ગંભીરતાથી આજ્ઞા આપવી | — “charge them,” “solemnly warn” | Same formal-charge verb as 4:1, here applied to warning against verbal disputes. | ગંભીરતાથી ચેતવણી આપો. High [REUSE of diamartyromai family]. |
| disputing about words λογομαχεῖν (logomachein, from logomacheō) to fight/quarrel about words | verbal wrangling over terminology without edifying purpose ”dispute about words,” “quarrel over words” | A specific warning against unprofitable doctrinal argument, distinct from the necessary work of guarding sound doctrine. | શબ્દો વિષે તકરાર કરવી (śabdo viṣe takarār karavī). Medium. |
| swerved concerning the truth περὶ τὴν ἀλήθειαν ἠστόχησαν (peri tēn alētheian ēstochēsan, from astocheō) missed the mark / swerved concerning the truth | ἀστοχέω = archery/target metaphor, “to miss the target" "have swerved from the truth,” “have missed the mark” | Describes Hymenaeus and Philetus specifically — a vivid image of doctrinal error as missing a fixed target (ἀλήθεια), not merely holding a differing opinion. | સત્યથી ચૂકી ગયા / ભટકી ગયા (satyathī chūkī gayā). High — part of the apostasy vocabulary family; reuse સત્ય consistently with the risk-flagged rendering at 4:4. |
| resurrection already happened ἀνάστασιν ἤδη γεγονέναι (anastasin ēdē gegonenai) that the resurrection has already occurred | ἀνάστασις [REUSE] પુનરુત્થાન, but here describing a false teaching — an over-spiritualized claim that the resurrection is already fully realized (proto-Gnostic tendency), denying a future bodily resurrection ”saying that the resurrection has already happened” | Doctrinally important nuance: this is the one place in the NT corpus studied so far where the established baseline term પુનરુત્થાન is used to describe a heresy, not the true doctrine. Translators must flag this clearly so learners do not conclude the term itself is suspect. | પુનરુત્થાન થઈ ગયું છે (એવો દાવો). Critical — flag explicitly as reported false teaching; add translator note: “the term પુનરુત્થાન itself is correct and unchanged; the error is Hymenaeus and Philetus’s false claim about its timing/nature, not a problem with the vocabulary.” |
| overturn ἀνατρέπουσιν (anatrepousin, from anatrepō) to overturn, subvert, upset | capsizing/overthrowing imagery ”upset,” “overturn,” “destroy” | False teaching’s destructive effect on believers’ faith. | ઊંધું વાળી નાખવું (ũdhũ vāḷī nākhavũ). Medium. |
| foundation θεμέλιος (themelios) foundation | building-imagery for what is fixed and load-bearing ”foundation” | God’s firm foundation stands despite false teaching’s damage — grounds Assurance amid Apostasy. | પાયો (pāyo). Low. |
| seal σφραγίς (sphragis) seal, signet-mark | mark of ownership/authentication ”seal” | The foundation’s seal (“The Lord knows those who are his”) secures believers’ identity against false teachers’ claims. | મુદ્રા / સીલ (mudrā). Low-Medium. |
| depart from iniquity ἀποστήτω ἀπὸ ἀδικίας (apostētō apo adikias, from aphistēmi) let him depart/stand away from unrighteousness | ἀφίστημι = to stand away from, withdraw from; ἀδικία = unrighteousness (negation of δικαιοσύνη root) “depart from iniquity,” “turn away from wickedness” | Note: here ἀφίστημι is used positively (departing FROM sin), the opposite sense from apostasy-from-truth; the same verb root can describe either faithful separation from sin or unfaithful departure from truth — context is decisive. | અન્યાયથી દૂર રહો (anyāythī dūr raho). Medium-High — flag the dual-direction risk of this verb root explicitly for translators: departing FROM evil is commanded; departing FROM the truth (elsewhere in the letter) is condemned. Do not use one uniform Gujarati verb that erases this distinction. |
| vessel σκεῦος (skeuos) vessel, container, instrument | household-object metaphor (vessels of gold/silver vs. wood/clay) “vessel” | Believers as vessels for honorable or dishonorable use, depending on purity of life — ties to Sanctification. | પાત્ર (pātra). Low-Medium. |
| honor / dishonor τιμήν / ἀτιμίαν (timēn/atimian) honor / dishonor | social-value vocabulary ”honorable use / dishonorable use” | Connects to honor/shame dynamics; flag per baseline’s cultural-metaphor guidance. | માનવંતુ / અપમાનજનક (mānvantũ/apmānjanak). Low-Medium — flag for native-speaker cultural review (honor/shame dynamics). |
| sanctified ἡγιασμένον (hēgiasmenon, from hagiazō) [REUSE] પવિત્ર (sanctified) | — “sanctified” | Reuses baseline Sanctification term. | પવિત્ર કરાયેલ. High [REUSE]. |
| flee…pursue φεῦγε…δίωκε (pheuge…diōke) flee…pursue | opposite-direction imperatives: away from evil desires, toward virtues ”flee…pursue” | Practical outworking of guarding sound doctrine and personal holiness together. | ભાગ… પાછળ પડ (bhāg…pāchhaḷ paḍ). Low. |
| righteousness, faith, love, peace δικαιοσύνην, πίστιν, ἀγάπην, εἰρήνην [REUSE 3 of 4] ન્યાયીપણું, વિશ્વાસ, શાંતિ + પ્રેમ | — “righteousness, faith, love, and peace” | Virtue-cluster combining three Critical/High baseline terms with love. | ન્યાયીપણું, વિશ્વાસ, પ્રેમ અને શાંતિ. Critical/High [REUSE]. |
| foolish disputes μωρὰς ζητήσεις (mōras zētēseis) foolish debates/questionings | speculative, unedifying controversies ”foolish disputes,” “foolish controversies” | Distinguishes necessary doctrinal guarding from unedifying quarrelsomeness. | મૂર્ખ તકરારો (mūrkh takrāro). Low-Medium. |
| gentle, apt to teach, patient ἤπιον, διδακτικόν, ἀνεξίκακον (ēpion, didaktikon, anexikakon) gentle, skilled at teaching, patient/forbearing | pastoral-character vocabulary for how correction should be delivered ”gentle,” “able to teach,” “patient/forbearing” | Character qualifications shaping how sound doctrine is guarded and taught — correction without harshness. | નમ્ર, શીખવવામાં કુશળ, સહનશીલ (namra, śīkhvavāmā kuśaḷ, sahanśīl). Low-Medium. |
| correcting with gentleness ἐν πραΰτητι παιδεύοντα (en prautēti paideuonta) instructing/training with gentleness | πραΰτης = gentleness/meekness; παιδεύω, cf. παιδεία (3:16) “correcting with gentleness” | Reinforces the tone required in Guarding Sound Doctrine — firm content, gentle manner. | નમ્રતાથી શિખવવું/સુધારવું (namratāthī sudhāravũ). Low-Medium. |
| repentance μετάνοια / ἀνανήψωσιν (metanoia / ananēpsōsin, from ananēphō) repentance / to come to one’s senses again, sober up | change of mind/direction; ἀνανήφω = a sobriety-metaphor for recovering right thinking after being “drugged” by error ”repentance,” “come to their senses” | The hoped-for outcome of gentle correction — reversal of the apostasy pattern, a real doctrinal gap not yet addressed in the Romans baseline. | પસ્તાવો (pastāvo) / ભાનમાં આવવું (bhānmā āvavũ). High — new to the Language Package; પસ્તાવો is the established Gujarati Christian term for repentance and should be added to translation memory at High risk, since correct understanding of repentance (a change of heart granted by God, cf. “God may perhaps grant them repentance,” 2:25) versus repentance as self-generated remorse/penance (relevant to both Hindu and Jain penitential practices) is doctrinally significant. |
| snare of the devil παγὶς τοῦ διαβόλου (pagis tou diabolou) trap/snare of the devil | διάβολος = the slanderer, a proper title for Satan ”snare of the devil” | Personal, hostile spiritual opposition behind false teaching — not an impersonal error or karmic drift. | શેતાનનો ફાંદો (śetānno phāndo). Medium — શેતાન is the established Gujarati Christian term for Satan/the devil; keep distinct from any impersonal “force of evil” framing. |
| knowledge of the truth ἐπίγνωσις ἀληθείας (epignōsis alētheias) full/precise knowledge of the truth | ἐπίγνωσις = knowledge intensified/directed toward a specific object (ἐπι- + γνῶσις) “knowledge of the truth” | The goal of gentle correction toward those ensnared by error — always the knowledge of the truth, i.e., the specific apostolic gospel-content, never generalized enlightenment. | સત્યનું જ્ઞાન (satyanũ jñān). CRITICAL — જ્ઞાન (“knowledge”) is the very root of કેવલજ્ઞાન (kevala-jñāna), the Jain term for the self-attained omniscience that IS liberation itself, already forbidden in the baseline as a substitute for “salvation.” Never let જ્ઞાન stand alone as an unqualified good; always anchor it as સત્યનું જ્ઞાન and teach explicitly that this is a truth received by grace through repentance, not an enlightenment attained by the practitioner’s own spiritual effort. |
Chapter 3
Chapter 3 has two parts: vv.1-13 (the character of the last-days apostasy and its false teachers — analyzed here) and vv.14-4:5 (the core passage — already fully analyzed in Part A above). Verses 1-13 supply the extensive vocabulary of vice and deception that frames the core passage’s charge.
| Terms | Variants | Theological Meaning | Gujarati Rendering / Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| last days ἐσχάταις ἡμέραις (eschatais hēmerais) last/final days | the concluding period of redemptive history before Christ’s return ”last days,” “latter days” | Central time-marker for the Apostasy-and-False-Teachers doctrine; linear, historically-terminating time, not one more turn of a cyclical age. | છેલ્લા દિવસો (chellā divaso). Medium-High — reuse the linear-history caution already established in the baseline’s Fulfillment-of-Prophecy doctrine (contra Hindu yuga-cycles / Jain beginningless cosmic time). |
| perilous/difficult times καιροὶ χαλεποί (kairoi chalepoi) grievous/harsh/dangerous times | καιρός = a critical season (cf. 4:3); χαλεπός = hard, fierce, dangerous ”difficult times,” “terrible times,” “perilous times” | Frames the vice-catalogue that follows as characteristic of the last days specifically. | કઠણ સમય (kaṭhaṇ samay). Medium. |
| the eighteen-vice catalogue (selected) φίλαυτοι, φιλάργυροι, ἀλαζόνες, ὑπερήφανοι, βλάσφημοι, ἀπειθεῖς, ἀχάριστοι, ἀνόσιοι, ἄστοργοι, ἄσπονδοι, διάβολοι, ἀκρατεῖς, ἀνήμεροι, ἀφιλάγαθοι, προδόται, προπετεῖς, τετυφωμένοι, φιλήδονοι μᾶλλον ἢ φιλόθεοι lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, abusive, disobedient, ungrateful, unholy, without natural affection, implacable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, traitors, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God | a comprehensive vice-list describing the moral character of last-days people (standard English vice-list renderings) | Describes not outsiders but people within religious circles (“having the appearance of godliness,” v.5) — the moral profile accompanying doctrinal apostasy. | Rendered individually with standard Gujarati moral-vocabulary (સ્વાર્થી, પૈસાના લોભી, અભિમાની, વગેરે). Low-Medium individually, but flag ἀχάριστοι (“ungrateful”) specifically as Medium-High: the Greek word shares the χάρις (“grace”) root — being “un-graced/ungracious,” fitting for a letter so concerned with grace. Render as કૃપા-ભૂલી ગયેલા or કૃતઘ્ની (kṛtaghnī, “ingrate”) — avoid losing the wordplay’s connection to કૃપા where a teaching note can highlight it. |
| appearance/form of godliness μόρφωσις εὐσεβείας (morphōsis eusebeias) the outward form/shape of godliness | μόρφωσις = external form/shape (without necessarily the substance); εὐσέβεια = godliness/piety ”form of godliness,” “outward form of religion” | The last-days deceivers are outwardly religious while inwardly denying its power — a warning against religiosity without transformation. | ભક્તિનું બહારનું રૂપ (bhaktinũ bahārnũ rūp). High — see εὐσέβεια below; this phrase is precisely the risk-point where outward religious devotion (a category with strong positive connotations in Gujarat’s devotional culture) is exposed as potentially hollow — an important teaching opportunity, not merely a translation problem, but requiring careful framing so ભક્તિ-vocabulary is not read as inherently suspect. |
| godliness εὐσέβεια (eusebeia) piety, godly reverence, devotion expressed in godly living | reverent devotion to God expressed in righteous conduct ”godliness,” “piety” | A key positive virtue elsewhere in the Pastorals, here shown capable of being merely external. | પરમેશ્વરભક્તિ (Parmeśvarbhakti). High — deliberately compounds પરમેશ્વર with ભક્તિ to keep the devotional object explicit and anchored to the true God (parallel to how baseline resolves object-recoverability for “faith”), while acknowledging this still risks resonance with generic Hindu devotional bhakti toward any chosen deity. Recommend consistent qualification and catechetical explanation wherever used. |
| denying its power τὴν δύναμιν αὐτῆς ἠρνημένοι (tēn dynamin autēs ērnēmenoi) having denied its power | δύναμις [REUSE] સામર્થ્ય; ἀρνέομαι [REUSE apostasy-adjacent] નકારવું ”denying its power” | Outward religious form without the Spirit’s actual transforming સામર્થ્ય (baseline’s power-of-God term) — a hollow substitute for genuine faith. | તેની શક્તિનો ઇન્કાર કરનારા — must render as તેનું સામર્થ્ય નકારનારા, never શક્તિ. High [REUSE, reinforces baseline’s શક્તિ-forbidden rule]. |
| weak women / silly women γυναικάρια (gynaikaria) little women (diminutive, pejorative) | a derogatory diminutive describing gullible, sin-laden women specifically targeted by false teachers in the historical setting ”weak women,” “silly women,” “vulnerable women” | A culturally and historically specific description of one vulnerable group targeted by false teachers, not a general statement about women’s spiritual capacity. | નબળી સ્ત્રીઓ (nabaḷī strīo). High — flag for careful, sensitive handling; the diminutive/pejorative force of the Greek should not be rendered in a way that reads as a blanket doctrinal statement about women generally. Recommend translator note clarifying the historically specific referent and cautioning against generalized application. |
| led away by various passions ἀγόμενα ἐπιθυμίαις ποικίλαις (agomena epithymiais poikilais) being led/carried along by various desires | ἐπιθυμία [cf. 4:3] ઇચ્છાઓ/વાસનાઓ ”led away by various passions” | Same passion-vocabulary as 4:3 — desire-driven receptivity to false teaching. | વિવિધ વાસનાઓથી ખેંચાયેલા. Medium [REUSE from 4:3 analysis]. |
| Jannes and Jambres Ἰάννης καὶ Ἰαμβρῆς proper names (traditional names of Pharaoh’s magicians) | OT background figures (not named in Exodus text itself, drawn from Jewish tradition) opposing Moses ”Jannes and Jambres” | A historical type for the last-days false teachers opposing the truth, as Jannes/Jambres opposed Moses. | Transliterate: યાન્નેસ અને યામ્બ્રેસ. Low — proper names, transliterate per established convention; brief background note recommended for readers with low OT literacy. |
| corrupted in mind κατεφθαρμένοι τὸν νοῦν (katephtharmenoi ton noun) corrupted/depraved as to the mind | νοῦς = the mind, faculty of understanding/moral reasoning ”corrupted in mind” | Doctrinal error is not merely intellectual mistake but moral corruption of the reasoning faculty itself. | મન બગડેલું / બુદ્ધિ ભ્રષ્ટ થયેલી (man bagaḍelũ). Medium. |
| disqualified/rejected concerning the faith ἀδόκιμοι περὶ τὴν πίστιν (adokimoi peri tēn pistin) unapproved/failing the test concerning the faith | ἀδόκιμος = negation of δόκιμος (“approved,” 2:15) — a testing/assaying metaphor (metallurgy: failing to pass the assay test) “disqualified regarding the faith,” “counterfeit faith” | Direct antonym-pair with δόκιμος (2:15, “present yourself approved”) — false teachers fail the very test Timothy is charged to pass. | વિશ્વાસની બાબતમાં નાપાસ / અસ્વીકૃત (viśvāsnī bābatmā nāpās). High — reuse વિશ્વાસ; keep the δόκιμος/ἀδόκιμος antonym-pair visible in Gujarati by using નાપાસ (“failed [a test]”) opposite પાસ/માન્ય for δόκιμος at 2:15, preserving Paul’s testing-metaphor. |
| deceivers, deceiving and being deceived πλάνοι…πλανῶντες καὶ πλανώμενοι (planoi…planōntes kai planōmenoi) deceivers…deceiving and being deceived | πλάνη-family: wandering off a true path, deception ”impostors…deceiving and being deceived” | False teachers are themselves victims of the deception they spread — reinforces that apostasy is not sober, honest disagreement but a self-perpetuating error. | ઠગનારા…ઠગતાં ઠગતાં પોતે ઠગાય છે (ṭhagnārā). Medium-High. |
| persecution διωγμούς (diōgmous) persecutions | organized/social hostility for the faith ”persecutions” | Ties directly to the Perseverance-under-Suffering doctrine — Paul’s own experience (3:11) models what he calls Timothy to endure. | સતાવણી (satāvaṇī). Medium — established, standard term. |
| the Lord rescued me ἐρρύσατο (errysato, from rhyomai) he rescued/delivered me | rescue from danger, distinct vocabulary from σῴζω though overlapping in sense ”the Lord rescued me,” “the Lord delivered me” | God’s active deliverance amid — not necessarily from — suffering; grounds Assurance amid ongoing persecution. | પ્રભુએ મને છોડાવ્યો (Prabhue mane choḍāvyo). Medium. |
| progress from bad to worse ἐπὶ τὸ χεῖρον προκόψουσιν (epi to cheiron prokopsousin) will progress toward the worse | προκόπτω = to advance/progress, ironically applied to moral/doctrinal decline ”will go on from bad to worse,” “will progress in evil” | Describes the trajectory of false teachers — decline is progressive, not static, urgent grounds for Timothy’s steadfast “continuing” (3:14, same chapter). | ખરાબીમાં આગળ વધતા જશે (kharābīmā āgaḷ vadhtā jaśe). Medium. |
(Verses 14-17 of chapter 3 are covered in full in Part A above.)
Chapter 4 (verses 6-22)
Verses 1-5 of chapter 4 are covered in full in Part A above. Verses 6-22 close the letter with Paul’s personal testimony of finished ministry (grounding Assurance of Reward), his final requests, and greetings — introducing the letter’s key reward and departure vocabulary.
| Terms | Variants | Theological Meaning | Gujarati Rendering / Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| poured out like a drink offering σπένδομαι (spendomai) I am being poured out (as a libation) | sacrificial-libation metaphor: wine poured out to a deity at the close of a sacrifice ”I am being poured out as a libation,” “my life is being poured out” | Paul describes his approaching martyrdom as a sacrificial offering completing his ministry — dignifies suffering unto death as the final act of faithful service. | અર્પણની જેમ રેડાઈ રહ્યો છું (arpaṇnī jem redāī rahyo chũ). Medium-High — અર્પણ (“offering”) is the standard Gujarati word for a ritual offering and is used identically of Hindu puja-offerings and Jain devotional offerings; the metaphor itself (life poured out completing sacrificial service) is textually apt but should be taught with a clear note that this is a one-time, self-giving image of faithful martyrdom, not a repeatable ritual act generating merit. |
| my departure ἀνάλυσις (analysis) a loosing/casting off, departure | nautical (untying a ship from moorage) or military (breaking camp) metaphor for death ”my departure,” “the time of my departure” | Death reframed as a dignified departure/release, not annihilation or an uncertain transition into another birth. | મારું જવાનો સમય / વિદાયનો સમય (vidāyno samay). Low-Medium. |
| fought the good fight τὸν καλὸν ἀγῶνα ἠγώνισμαι (ton kalon agōna ēgōnismai) I have fought/competed in the good contest | ἀγών = a public contest (athletic or otherwise); reuses ἀθλέω-family imagery from 2:5 ”I have fought the good fight,” “I have competed well” | Retrospective claim of faithful perseverance to the end — grounds the Assurance of Reward that follows immediately. | મેં સારી લડાઈ લડી લીધી છે. Medium [REUSE athletic-imagery family from ch. 2]. |
| finished the race τὸν δρόμον τετέλεκα (ton dromon teteleka) I have finished/completed the course | δρόμος = a running-course; τελέω = to complete/bring to an end ”I have finished the race,” “I have completed the course” | Completion, not abandonment — perseverance carried through to the very end. | મેં દોડ પૂરી કરી છે. Medium. |
| kept the faith τὴν πίστιν τετήρηκα (tēn pistin tetērēka, from tēreō) I have kept/guarded the faith | τηρέω = to keep watch over, preserve; [REUSE] πίστις ”I have kept the faith” | The climactic statement of Guarding Sound Doctrine and Faithful Transmission fulfilled in Paul’s own life — he modeled to the end what he charged Timothy to do. | મેં વિશ્વાસ જાળવી રાખ્યો છે. High [REUSE of વિશ્વાસ]; reuse જાળવવું consistently with φυλάσσω (1:14) for the letter’s unified guarding-vocabulary. |
| laid up / reserved ἀπόκειται (apokeitai, from apokeimai) is laid up, is reserved, is set aside | stored/reserved for future receipt, financial/inheritance imagery ”is laid up for me,” “is reserved” | The crown is not self-generated but reserved by another (the Judge) — supports gracious, promised reward rather than automatic self-earned outcome. | મારે માટે રાખેલો છે (mārે māṭe rākhelo chhe). Medium-High — pair carefully with the reward theology caution below. |
| crown of righteousness ὁ τῆς δικαιοσύνης στέφανος (ho tēs dikaiosynēs stephanos) the crown of righteousness | στέφανος = a victor’s wreath/crown (athletic/military honor, not a royal diadem); δικαιοσύνη [REUSE] ન્યાયીપણું ”the crown of righteousness” | The central term for Assurance of Reward — an athletic victor’s crown, given at the finish line by the righteous Judge, for a persevering faith already secured by grace, not a mechanically-earned outcome. | ન્યાયીપણાનો મુગટ (nyāyīpaṇāno mugaṭ). High — reuse ન્યાયીપણું (baseline Critical term); flag મુગટ (“crown,” a victor’s wreath) as Medium-High on its own: it must be taught within the framework already established for કૃપા/ન્યાયીપણું — this is Christ’s gracious reward to those he has justified and sustained through faith to the end, not a good-karma dividend paid out by an impersonal cosmic ledger (a live risk given the strong karma-phala expectation-of-just-deserts common to both Hindu and Jain frameworks in Gujarat). |
| the Lord will award ἀποδώσει (apodōsei, from apodidōmi) he will give back/repay/award | repayment/rendering vocabulary (can mean either recompense for evil or reward for good) “will award,” “will give,” “will grant” | God as the one who personally, freely awards the crown — a personal Judge acting in grace toward his own, not an automatic law of cause-and-effect. | આપશે / બદલો આપશે (ādaśe). High — must not read as automatic karmic “repayment” (કર્મફળ); render “આપશે” (will give) rather than a term emphasizing mechanical repayment, and anchor firmly to the “righteous Judge” who personally judges (4:1, 4:8), continuing the baseline’s Providence-doctrine caution against impersonal, self-executing cosmic law. |
| righteous judge ὁ δίκαιος κριτής (ho dikaios kritēs) the righteous judge | δίκαιος [REUSE root] ન્યાયી; κριτής = one who judges/decides, a legal-forensic term (cf. κρίνω, 4:1) “the righteous Judge” | Christ personally and justly evaluates and rewards — grounds the whole reward-and-judgment vocabulary of the letter in a specific, personal divine actor. | ન્યાયી ન્યાયાધીશ (nyāyī nyāyādhīś). High — reuse the ન્યાય root shared across ન્યાયીપણું/ન્યાયી ઠરાવવું/ન્યાય કરવો for full lexical consistency across the letter’s judgment-and-righteousness vocabulary. |
| love his appearing ἠγαπηκόσι τὴν ἐπιφάνειαν αὐτοῦ (ēgapēkosi tēn epiphaneian autou) who have loved his appearing | ἐπιφάνεια [see 4:1] પ્રગટન ”who have loved his appearing” | The crown is for those who long for Christ’s future return, not those absorbed in “the present age” (v.10, Demas) — connects Assurance of Reward to eschatological hope. | જેઓ તેમના પ્રગટનને પ્રેમ કરે છે. Critical [REUSE, see full note at 4:1]. |
| loved this present world τὸν νῦν αἰῶνα ἀγαπήσας (ton nyn aiōna agapēsas) having loved the present age | αἰών = age/world-order (cf. 1:9’s “before the ages”); contrasted sharply with loving Christ’s appearing ”loved this present world,” “loved this present age” | Demas’s desertion (v.10) exemplifies the very apostasy-under-pressure the letter warns against — love of the present age draws one away from faithful perseverance. | આ સંસારને પ્રેમ કરીને (ā saṅsārne prem karīne). Medium — સંસાર is a loaded term in Hindu/Jain usage (the cycle of worldly existence/rebirth itself); here it simply means “the present world/age,” not the cosmic cycle of transmigration. Recommend a more neutral rendering, વર્તમાન જગત or આ જમાનો, to avoid accidental resonance with saṃsāra-as-rebirth-cycle. |
| the Lord will rescue me ῥύσεταί με ὁ κύριος (rhysetai me ho kyrios) the Lord will deliver/rescue me | ῥύομαι [cf. 3:11] રક્ષણ/છોડાવવું; κύριος [REUSE] પ્રભુ ”the Lord will rescue me” | Confident hope of final deliverance into Christ’s heavenly kingdom, paralleling Paul’s earlier testimony (3:11). | પ્રભુ મને છોડાવશે. Critical [REUSE of પ્રભુ]. |
| his heavenly kingdom τὴν βασιλείαν αὐτοῦ τὴν ἐπουράνιον (tēn basileian autou tēn epouranion) his heavenly kingdom | βασιλεία [REUSE pattern] રાજ્ય; ἐπουράνιος = heavenly, of/from heaven ”his heavenly kingdom” | Final destination of the persevering believer — God’s own reign, not a this-worldly political restoration. | તેમનું સ્વર્ગીય રાજ્ય (temnũ svargīya rājya). Medium [REUSE of રાજ્ય pattern]. |
| glory forever and ever ἡ δόξα εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων (hē doxa eis tous aiōnas tōn aiōnōn) glory unto the ages of the ages | δόξα [REUSE] મહિમા; idiom for unending eternity ”glory forever and ever” | Closing doxology, ascribing to God unending glory — appropriate doxological climax after the letter’s sober warnings. | મહિમા સદાસર્વકાળ (mahimā sadāsarvakāḷ). High [REUSE of મહિમા]. |
Summary of New Doctrine-Critical Terms Requiring Human Theologian Review
The following terms, new to the Language Package beyond the Romans baseline, are assessed Critical and require the same theologian-review routing as the baseline’s Critical tier:
- θεόπνευστος → પરમેશ્વર-પ્રેરિત (God-breathed)
- γραφή / ἱερὰ γράμματα → પવિત્રશાસ્ત્ર (Scripture)
- σωτήρ → તારણહાર (Savior)
- ἐπιφάνεια → પ્રગટન (Appearing — dual incarnation/parousia sense)
- ἐπίγνωσις (ἀληθείας) → સત્યનું જ્ઞાન (knowledge of the truth) — due to જ્ઞાન/kevala-jñāna collision
- ἀνάστασιν ἤδη γεγονέναι — the false-teaching misuse of πુનરુત્થાન in 2:18
All other new terms above are assessed High, Medium, or Low per the same risk framework as doctrine_risk_registry.json and are detailed with routing recommendations in 08_core_glossary.md.
