Semantic Analysis
Semantic Analysis: 1 Peter (Koine Greek → Turkish)
Curriculum: 1 Peter Core passage: 1 Peter 1:3–9 Doctrines in scope: The Living Hope of the Resurrection; Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake; The Church as a Holy and Royal Priesthood; Submission to Authority and Christlike Endurance; Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering; Holiness in Conduct; Elders and Humility; Christ’s Proclamation to the Spirits (3:18–22)
Methodology
This document analyzes every chapter of 1 Peter (1–5) in the original Koine Greek, first to last. The core passage (1:3–9) receives full verse-by-verse treatment. Every other passage/chapter is treated section-by-section for its load-bearing theological terms only (terms that carry doctrinal weight or translation risk), each with: original word, transliteration, literal meaning, semantic range, English variants, contextual theological meaning in 1 Peter, and destination-language (Turkish) rendering with risk assessment.
Governing rule: Any term already recorded in the baseline Romans-curriculum translation_memory.json (Tanrı, İsa, Mesih, Rab, Lütuf, İman, Doğruluk, Kurtuluş, Kutsal, Kutsallar, Kutsallaşma, Diriliş, Yücelik, Peygamber, Vaftiz, Mirasçı, Şükran, Esenlik, Çağrılmış/Çağrı, Tanrı’nın seçimi, Tanrı’nın gücü, Merhamet, Özgürlük, köleler/efendiler, Ruhsal armağanlar, “Ne mutlu,” Paydaşlık, born_of_god, born_from_above, etc.) is reused exactly — never re-derived or substituted. This document flags every such reuse and analyzes only the new interpretive risk that 1 Peter’s specific context introduces for that reused term. New terms not yet in translation memory are proposed here for theologian review and eventual TM entry in Phase 2.
CORE PASSAGE: 1 Peter 1:3–9 (Verse-by-Verse)
1 Peter 1:3
| Terms | Variants | Contextual theological meaning | Turkish rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| εὐλογητός eulogētos ”well-spoken-of,” blessed | Doxological formula opening a benediction ”Blessed be,” “Praise be to” | Liturgical opening; God is the proper object of praise, not merely gratitude | Övgüye değer / Övülmüş olsun. Low-Medium risk; standard doxology form, no false-friend collision. |
| θεὸς καὶ πατήρ theos kai patēr God and Father | — “God and Father,” “God, the Father” | Baseline Critical term reused exactly: Tanrı, Baba. Calling God “Father” retains the baseline’s tawhid tension (Qur’an 112:3); teaching note required on first use per lesson. | Tanrı ve Baba — reuse baseline exactly. |
| κύριος (ἡμῶν) kyrios (hēmōn) (our) Lord | Exclusive supreme authority ”our Lord” | Reuses baseline Critical term Rab — Jesus’ exclusive Lordship, foundational to the whole letter’s confessional stance (cf. 3:15). | Rab — reuse baseline exactly, no substitution. |
| πολὺ ἔλεος poly eleos great/abundant mercy | Compassion shown toward the undeserving ”great mercy,” “abundant mercy” | The ground of regeneration is God’s mercy, not human merit. | Bol merhameti — reuse Merhamet (established Medium-risk term from Galatians package). Keep distinct from Lütuf (grace); here mercy is the motive, not synonymous with grace itself. |
| ἀναγεννήσας anagennēsas (aor. ptc. of ἀναγεννάω) “having caused [us] to be born again/anew” | Regeneration; new spiritual birth caused by another, not self-produced ”who has caused us to be born again,” “has given us new birth,” “regenerated us” | God’s own sovereign, monergistic act — the theological anchor of “living hope.” Directly parallel to the established born_of_god doctrine (John 1:13, “Tanrı’dan doğmuşlardır”) and born_from_above (John 3:3, “yeniden doğmadıkça”). | HIGH RISK. Render “bizi yeniden doğurmuş olan” (causative, God as subject) — never a reflexive “yeniden doğduk” that would shift agency to the believer. Must not be assimilated to Islamic tövbe (self-initiated repentance) as the ground of new standing; God causes the birth, the believer does not achieve it. Theologian review required. |
| ἐλπὶς ζῶσα elpis zōsa living hope | ἐλπίς = confident expectation (not a mere wish); ζῶσα (pres. ptc. of ζάω) = living, active ”living hope,” “hope that lives” | Hope that is alive because grounded in a historical, accomplished resurrection — not a probabilistic hope for a still-undetermined future outcome. | HIGH RISK. “Diri (yaşayan) bir umut.” Turkish “umut” in general devotional usage (including Islamic “Allah’ın rahmetinden ümit”) often carries an unresolved, hoped-for-but-uncertain sense. Teaching material must state explicitly that this hope is already secured, not merely aspirational — ties directly to the assurance_of_salvation Critical doctrine in the Romans baseline. |
| διʼ ἀναστάσεως… ἐκ νεκρῶν dia anastaseōs… ek nekrōn through the resurrection… from the dead | — “through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” | Reuses baseline Critical term Diriliş. A real, historical death is presupposed as the necessary counterpart of the resurrection — directly relevant given Qur’an 4:157’s denial that Jesus actually died. | Diriliş — reuse baseline exactly; never permit a no-death-ascension reading. Mandatory theologian flag, per baseline convention for every occurrence of resurrection doctrine. |
1 Peter 1:4
Greek: εἰς κληρονομίαν ἄφθαρτον καὶ ἀμίαντον καὶ ἀμάραντον, τετηρημένην ἐν οὐρανοῖς εἰς ὑμᾶς
| Terms | Variants | Contextual theological meaning | Turkish rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| κληρονομία klēronomia inheritance, allotted possession | Legal-relational inheritance, not mere property ”inheritance,” “heritage” | The believer’s certain future possession, secured now though not yet fully received. | HIGH RISK. Miras — consistent with established Mirasçı (heir, Galatians/Ephesians). Must be taught as a guaranteed, already-secured inheritance, contrasting with the Islamic eschatological pattern in which entry to Paradise remains undecided until a deeds-weighing Judgment. |
| ἄφθαρτος aphthartos not liable to corruption/decay | a- (not) + phtheirō (to ruin, corrupt, destroy) “imperishable,” “incorruptible” | Permanence of the inheritance, contrasted with all earthly possessions. | Çürümez / tükenmez. Medium risk; concrete and clear, low collision. |
| ἀμίαντος amiantos unstained, undefiled | a- + miainō (to defile, stain) “undefiled,” “unstained,” “pure” | Moral/ritual purity of the inheritance. Echoes the “lamb without blemish” language of 1:19. | Lekesiz / kirletilmemiş. Low-Medium risk; keep consistent with 1:19’s lamb imagery for thematic cohesion. |
| ἀμάραντος amarantos unfading | a- + marainō (to wither, fade) “unfading,” “that does not fade away” | Anticipates the “unfading crown of glory” (ἀμαράντινον, 5:4) — a deliberate bracket across the letter. | Solmaz. Low risk. Cross-reference note: must render consistently with 5:4’s crown imagery. |
| τετηρημένην tetērēmenēn (perf. pass. ptc. of τηρέω) having been kept/guarded/reserved | Passive — the inheritance is kept BY God, not maintained by human effort ”kept,” “reserved,” “being kept in store” | Reinforces divine custodianship of the inheritance; the believer’s security rests on God’s guarding, not personal performance. | Korunan / saklanan (passive form retained). High risk if rendered actively (implying the believer keeps it); must stay passive. |
| ἐν οὐρανοῖς en ouranois in the heavens | — “in heaven,” “in the heavens” | Location of present, secure safekeeping. | Göklerde — consistent with Matthew’s “Göklerin Egemenliği” heaven-vocabulary conventions. Low risk. |
1 Peter 1:5
Greek: τοὺς ἐν δυνάμει θεοῦ φρουρουμένους διὰ πίστεως εἰς σωτηρίαν ἑτοίμην ἀποκαλυφθῆναι ἐν καιρῷ ἐσχάτῳ
| Terms | Variants | Contextual theological meaning | Turkish rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| δύναμις θεοῦ dynamis theou power of God | — “God’s power,” “the power of God” | Reuses baseline High term Tanrı’nın gücü (never kudret, which risks a qadar-fatalism association). Here specifically the power that guards believers unto salvation. | Tanrı’nın gücü — reuse baseline exactly. |
| φρουρούμενος phrouroumenos (pres. pass. ptc. of φρουρέω) being garrisoned/guarded (military image) | Guard duty, sentry-post protection ”kept,” “guarded,” “protected as by a garrison” | A concrete military-guard metaphor for God’s active, ongoing protection of believers’ salvation. | MEDIUM RISK. “Koruma altında tutuluyorsunuz” — where possible retain the concrete garrison/guard-post image (e.g. “bir nöbetçi gibi korunuyorsunuz”) rather than flattening to a generic “korunuyorsunuz,” per the Ephesians package’s discipline of keeping military metaphors concrete (cf. Armor of God). |
| πίστις pistis faith | — “faith” | Reuses baseline High term İman — the means, not the ground, of the guarding described. | İman — reuse baseline exactly. |
| σωτηρία sōtēria salvation | — “salvation” | Reuses baseline Critical term Kurtuluş. | Kurtuluş — reuse baseline exactly; mandatory theologian flag per baseline convention. |
| ἑτοίμη hetoimē ready, prepared | — “ready to be revealed” | Salvation is already complete and waiting, not a still-undetermined outcome — reinforces assurance_of_salvation. | Hazır. High risk if softened into “muhtemel” (probable) — must retain full certainty. |
| ἀποκαλυφθῆναι apokalyphthēnai (aor. pass. inf. of ἀποκαλύπτω) to be revealed/unveiled | Eschatological unveiling of what already exists, not new revelatory content ”to be revealed,” “to be disclosed” | The unveiling of Christ at his return, not new-scripture revelation. | MEDIUM RISK. Render “açığa çıkarılmak / görünür kılınmak” — deliberately avoid vahiy (the precise Islamic term for prophetic scripture-revelation, per the Galatians package’s caution) since this is eschatological unveiling, not a claim to new revealed content. |
| ἐν καιρῷ ἐσχάτῳ en kairō eschatō in the last time | — “in the last time,” “at the last day” | Christ’s return / final consummation. | Son zamanda. Low risk. |
1 Peter 1:6
Greek: ἐν ᾧ ἀγαλλιᾶσθε, ὀλίγον ἄρτι εἰ δέον [ἐστὶν] λυπηθέντες ἐν ποικίλοις πειρασμοῖς
| Terms | Variants | Contextual theological meaning | Turkish rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| ἀγαλλιάω agalliaō to exult, be overjoyed | Stronger, more intense than χαίρω (ordinary joy) “you rejoice greatly,” “you exult” | Joy that coexists with present grief — the letter’s central emotional-theological paradox. | MEDIUM RISK. “Büyük bir sevinçle coşuyorsunuz” — must convey intensity beyond plain “mutlu olmak,” since the verb recurs at the letter’s other joy/suffering junctures (1:8; 4:13). |
| λυπηθέντες lypēthentes (aor. pass. ptc. of λυπέω) grieved, distressed | Genuine emotional pain, not denied or spiritualized away ”grieved,” “distressed” | The text does not deny real suffering; joy and grief are held together, not sequential replacement of one by the other. | Kederlenmiş / üzülmüş. Low-Medium risk. |
| ποικίλοις πειρασμοῖς poikilois peirasmois various trials/testings | πειρασμός spans “trial/testing” and “temptation" "various trials,” “manifold temptations” | Context (external suffering, not internal moral enticement) requires the “trial/testing” sense, not “temptation.” | HIGH RISK. “Çeşit çeşit sınavlar/denemeler” — must NOT render as “günaha sürükleyici ayartmalar” (temptations toward sin), which would shift the doctrine from suffering-for-righteousness to a moral-temptation frame. This selection is load-bearing for the Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake doctrine. |
1 Peter 1:7
| Terms | Variants | Contextual theological meaning | Turkish rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| δοκίμιον (τῆς πίστεως) dokimion (tēs pisteōs) the tested, proven genuineness (of faith) | From δοκιμάζω, “to test/prove genuine”; refined-metal image ”the proof/genuineness of your faith,” “your faith, tested” | Suffering functions to prove the reality of already-present faith, not to earn standing before God. | HIGH RISK. “İmanınızın sınanmış değeri / sınanmışlığı.” Must be taught alongside 1:5’s already-secured salvation so this is not misread as merit accumulated through suffering (an amel-adjacent reading) but as the demonstration of a gift already given. |
| πολυτιμότερον χρυσίου… διὰ πυρὸς δοκιμαζομένου polytimoteron chrysiou… dia pyros dokimazomenou more precious than gold… tested by fire | Refining metaphor ”more precious than gold, refined by fire” | Concrete metallurgical image; retain concretely. | Ateşte sınanan altından daha değerli. Low risk. |
| ἀποκάλυψις Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ apokalypsis Iēsou Christou the revelation/appearing of Jesus Christ | Here: the Parousia, Christ’s visible return, not scripture-revelation ”at the revelation of Jesus Christ,” “when Jesus Christ appears” | Eschatological appearing, distinct from the “revelation” caution attached to Paul’s apostolic commissioning in Galatians. | MEDIUM RISK. “İsa Mesih göründüğünde / ortaya çıktığında” — avoid the Galatians package’s açıklama/vahiy vocabulary pair here, since this is Christ’s personal appearing, not a claim about new revealed content. Distinguish explicitly in teaching notes from that different sense of ἀποκάλυψις. |
| ἔπαινος καὶ δόξα καὶ τιμή epainos kai doxa kai timē praise and glory and honor | — “praise, glory, and honor” | Eschatological commendation of proven faith. δόξα reuses baseline Yücelik (High risk, Critical elsewhere re: Christ’s own glory; here applied derivatively to believers’ commendation — must not be confused with Christ’s own unique glory). | Övgü, yücelik ve saygınlık. Reuse Yücelik for δόξα; flag that this is a derivative, reward-sense usage, distinct from Christ’s own essential glory (cf. Colossians/Philippians Critical doctrine). |
1 Peter 1:8
| Terms | Variants | Contextual theological meaning | Turkish rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| ἀγαπάω agapaō to love | Self-giving, committed love ”you love” | Love for the unseen Christ — the letter’s first-generation-removed relationship to Jesus (Peter’s readers likely never met him in the flesh). | Sevmek. Low risk; standard established vocabulary. |
| πιστεύω pisteuō to believe, trust | — “believing” | Reuses baseline İman etmek (verb form of İman). | İman etmek / güvenmek. Reuse baseline exactly. |
| χαρὰ ἀνεκλαλήτος chara aneklalētos inexpressible/unspeakable joy | an- (not) + eklaleō (to utter, speak out) “inexpressible joy,” “joy unspeakable” | Joy that exceeds ordinary description — intensifies 1:6’s ἀγαλλιάω. | Sözle anlatılamaz / tarifsiz bir sevinç. Low-Medium risk. |
| δεδοξασμένη dedoxasmenē (perf. pass. ptc. of δοξάζω) glorified, filled with glory | — “and full of glory,” “glorified joy” | Joy already bears the character of the coming glory — an already/not-yet marker. | Yücelikle dolu. Reuse Yücelik root; Medium risk if flattened to a merely emotional “muhteşem” without the glory-vocabulary link. |
1 Peter 1:9
Greek: κομιζόμενοι τὸ τέλος τῆς πίστεως ὑμῶν σωτηρίαν ψυχῶν
| Terms | Variants | Contextual theological meaning | Turkish rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| κομιζόμενοι komizomenoi (pres. mid. ptc. of κομίζω) obtaining, receiving for oneself | — “obtaining,” “receiving,” “as you attain” | Present, ongoing reception — not a future-only hope. | Elde ederek / kavuşarak. Low risk. |
| τέλος τῆς πίστεως telos tēs pisteōs the goal/outcome/culmination of your faith | τέλος = end, goal, completion — NOT mere cessation ”the goal of your faith,” “the outcome of your faith” | Faith’s intended culmination, not its termination. | MEDIUM RISK. “İmanınızın sonucu/hedefi.” Must not be rendered with a Turkish word suggesting faith’s ending (e.g. avoid phrasing implying “faith stops here”) — τέλος is fulfillment-language, not cessation-language. |
| σωτηρία ψυχῶν sōtēria psychōn salvation of souls | ψυχή = soul/life/self (the whole person), not a Platonic disembodied-soul-only category ”the salvation of your souls,” “the salvation of your souls/lives” | Reuses baseline Kurtuluş; ψυχή should be understood as the whole person, guarding against an over-spiritualized, body-denying reading. | Canlarınızın kurtuluşu. Reuse Kurtuluş; render ψυχή as can (whole-person life), not narrowly as “ruh” (which risks conflating with πνεῦμα/Kutsal Ruh vocabulary). |
CHAPTER 1 — Remainder (1:1–2; 1:10–25)
1:1–2 — Greeting
| Terms | Variants | Contextual theological meaning | Turkish rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| ἀπόστολος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ apostolos Iēsou Christou apostle of Jesus Christ | — “an apostle of Jesus Christ” | Reuses baseline Medium term Elçi. | Elçi — reuse baseline exactly. |
| ἐκλεκτοῖς παρεπιδήμοις eklektois parepidēmois to the elect who are temporary residents/sojourners | ἐκλεκτός = chosen/elect (reuse Tanrı’nın seçimi doctrine vocabulary); παρεπίδημος = one residing temporarily in a foreign place, a resident alien ”elect exiles,” “strangers in the world,” “chosen ones, temporary residents” | Identity marker for the whole letter: believers are God’s chosen people who nonetheless live as social outsiders/resident aliens in their present society. | HIGH RISK. Seçilmiş (reuse election vocabulary) + yabancılar/göçmen konumundakiler for παρεπίδημος. Note: resonates meaningfully — without being reduced to a political statement — with diaspora, refugee, and minority-community experience; avoid contemporary political framing while preserving the pastoral resonance. Ties to 2:11’s repeated πάροικοι καὶ παρεπιδήμους. |
| διασπορᾶς diasporas of the dispersion/scattering | OT technical term for Israel scattered among the nations ”of the Dispersion,” “scattered” | Applied metaphorically to the Gentile-and-Jewish church scattered through Asia Minor. | Dağılmış olanlar / sürgündekiler. Medium risk; requires brief OT-background note given low OT narrative literacy assumed for most readers. |
| πρόγνωσις θεοῦ πατρός prognōsis theou patros foreknowledge of God the Father | God’s prior knowledge/determination ”according to the foreknowledge of God the Father” | Grounds election in God’s own prior knowledge, not human merit. | HIGH RISK. “Baba Tanrı’nın önceden bilmesi.” Same caution as baseline’s predestined_chosen entry: NEVER kader (comprehensive Islamic divine-decree doctrine) — keep this narrowly relational and salvation-specific, per the existing Ephesians-package prohibition. |
| ἁγιασμὸς πνεύματος hagiasmos pneumatos sanctification of the Spirit | The Spirit’s setting-apart work ”sanctification of the Spirit,” “the Spirit’s sanctifying work” | Reuses baseline High term Kutsallaşma. | Ruh’un kutsallaştırması — reuse Kutsallaşma baseline exactly. |
| ῥαντισμὸς αἵματος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ rhantismos haimatos Iēsou Christou sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ | OT covenant-ratification image (Exodus 24:8) “sprinkling with his blood,” “the sprinkled blood of Jesus Christ” | Covenant-ratification and cleansing image; requires OT background explanation for most readers. | MEDIUM-HIGH RISK. “İsa Mesih’in kanının serpilmesi.” Concrete OT sacrificial/covenant image with essentially no ready cultural parallel for a low-OT-literacy Turkish reader; requires accompanying teaching note (Exodus 24 background), not a domesticating substitution. |
| εἰς ὑπακοὴν… Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ eis hypakoēn… Iēsou Christou unto obedience… of Jesus Christ | — “for obedience to Jesus Christ” | Parallels the baseline’s obedience_of_faith caution: obedience flowing from a secured relationship, not itaat as self-establishing submission. | HIGH RISK. “İsa Mesih’e itaat için.” Apply the same discipline as İmanın getirdiği itaat (obedience_of_faith): must be taught as response to grace already given, never a submission that itself earns standing (guarding against collapse into islam-as-submission framing). |
| χάρις… καὶ εἰρήνη charis… kai eirēnē grace… and peace | — “grace and peace” | Reuses baseline Critical term Lütuf and Medium term Esenlik. | Lütuf ve esenlik — reuse baseline exactly. |
1:10–12 — Prophetic anticipation
| Terms | Variants | Contextual theological meaning | Turkish rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| προφῆται prophētai prophets | — “the prophets” | Reuses baseline Peygamber — retain the baseline’s caution that Peygamber is also the exclusive Islamic category into which Isa himself is placed; OT prophets’ pointing forward to Christ must be kept distinct from Christ’s own greater identity. | Peygamberler — reuse baseline exactly, with baseline’s surrounding-teaching caution retained. |
| τὸ ἐν αὐτοῖς πνεῦμα Χριστοῦ to en autois pneuma Christou the Spirit of Christ in them | The pre-incarnate Christ’s Spirit inspiring OT prophecy ”the Spirit of Christ in them” | A strong pre-existence-of-Christ claim embedded in an OT-prophecy statement — ties directly to the Colossians/Philippians Critical pre-existence doctrine. | CRITICAL. “İçlerinde bulunan Mesih’in Ruhu.” Flag for mandatory theologian review: asserts Christ’s Spirit was active in OT revelation prior to the incarnation, reinforcing (not contradicting) the pipeline’s established pre-existence-of-Christ doctrine. |
| παθήματα… δόξας pathēmata… doxas sufferings… glories | — “the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow” | Introduces the suffering-then-glory pattern that structures the whole letter (also central to 3:18–22; 4:13; 5:1, 10). | Acılar… yücelikler. Reuse Yücelik; low additional risk beyond the pattern itself, which recurs throughout — see doctrine notes below. |
| ἐπιθυμοῦσιν… ἄγγελοι epithymousin… angeloi angels long/desire | Intense angelic interest ”things into which angels long to look” | A vivid detail underscoring the surpassing significance of the gospel events; low doctrinal risk, high homiletic value. | Melekler bile bakmayı çok istiyor. Low risk. |
1:13–21 — Call to holiness; ransom by Christ’s blood
| Terms | Variants | Contextual theological meaning | Turkish rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| ἀναζωσάμενοι τὴν διάνοιαν anazōsamenoi tēn dianoian having girded up the mind | Metaphor from tucking up long robes for action/work ”prepare your minds for action” | Practical mental readiness metaphor; largely idiomatic. | ”Zihninizi eyleme hazırlayın.” Low risk; render the meaning, not the literal robe-gathering image, per idiom-handling rules. |
| ἅγιοι γενήθητε hagioi genēthēte become holy ones / be holy | Imperative call to holiness, citing Leviticus 11:44–45; 19:2 ”be holy” | Core statement for the Holiness in Conduct doctrine — holiness grounded in God’s own character and command, cited directly from the OT holiness code. | Reuses baseline High term Kutsal. “Kutsal olun.” Must retain the moral-relational, Spirit-enabled sense (per baseline Kutsal entry), never a ritual-purity (tahara-adjacent) reading. Mandatory theologian flag given OT holiness-code citation. |
| ἐν πάσῃ ἀναστροφῇ en pasē anastrophē in all [your] conduct/manner of life | ἀναστροφή = way of life, conduct, behavior — a key recurring word across the letter (1:15, 18; 2:12; 3:1, 2, 16) “in all your conduct,” “in all you do” | The letter’s dominant term for observable, everyday Christian behavior, especially under outsider scrutiny. | NEW TERM, recurring. “Yaşayışınız / davranışınız.” Medium risk; consistency across all six occurrences is important for the letter’s coherence and should be flagged for cross-chapter consistency in Phase 2. |
| ἐλυτρώθητε elytrōthēte (aor. pass. of λυτρόω) you were ransomed/redeemed | Commercial redemption-by-payment image ”you were ransomed,” “you were redeemed” | Reuses the Galatians package’s Kurtarmak (redemption) convention — an accomplished transaction, consistent with Kurtuluş. | HIGH RISK. Kurtarıldınız — reuse Kurtarmak convention exactly. |
| πατροπαράδοτος… ματαία ἀναστροφή patroparadotos… mataia anastrophē futile way of life handed down from [your] fathers | Ancestral-tradition critique ”the futile ways inherited from your ancestors,” “empty tradition passed down from your forefathers” | Contrasts the readers’ pre-conversion way of life (whether pagan or generically inherited religion) with redeemed conduct. | HIGH RISK, pastoral sensitivity. “Atalarınızdan kalan boş yaşayış.” Per the Colossians package’s discipline on “philosophy and empty deceit” (never a blanket statement), this must be taught as addressed to the readers’ specific pre-conversion practice, not as a blanket critique of inherited Turkish-Islamic family or cultural tradition as such. Theologian review required for framing. |
| τιμίῳ αἵματι… ὡς ἀμνοῦ ἀμώμου καὶ ἀσπίλου Χριστοῦ timiō haimati… hōs amnou amōmou kai aspilou Christou with the precious blood… as of a lamb without blemish and without spot, [namely] of Christ | Sacrificial/Passover-lamb imagery; ἄμωμος (unblemished), ἄσπιλος (unstained) “the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or defect” | Reuses the John package’s Lamb of God vocabulary (Tanrı Kuzusu) and connects to Passover/Isaiah 53 typology already established. | CRITICAL. “Kusursuz ve lekesiz bir kuzu gibi olan Mesih’in kıymetli kanıyla.” Reuse Kuzu vocabulary from the John package (İşte, dünyanın günahını ortadan kaldıran Tanrı Kuzusu) for thematic and doctrinal consistency; mandatory theologian flag as an atonement-doctrine passage. |
| προεγνωσμένου… πρὸ καταβολῆς κόσμου proegnōsmenou… pro katabolēs kosmou foreknown… before the foundation of the world | — “who was foreknown before the foundation of the world” | A strong pre-existence-of-Christ claim, paired with 1:11’s “Spirit of Christ” statement. | CRITICAL. “Dünyanın kuruluşundan önce önceden bilinen.” Reinforces the Colossians/Philippians Critical pre-existence-of-Christ doctrine; theologian review mandatory. |
| πίστιν καὶ ἐλπίδα εἰς θεόν pistin kai elpida eis theon faith and hope [directed] toward/into God | — “your faith and hope are in God” | Reuses İman; ἐλπίς here (as in 1:3) reuses the umut analysis above. | İman ve umut Tanrı’ya yöneliktir. Reuse established renderings. |
1:22–25 — Love one another; the imperishable seed of the word
| Terms | Variants | Contextual theological meaning | Turkish rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| ἀγαπήσατε… ἐκ [καθαρᾶς] καρδίας agapēsate… ek [katharas] kardias love [one another]… from a [pure] heart | — “love one another earnestly/fervently from a pure heart” | Practical outworking of the new birth. | Birbirinizi candan/temiz bir yürekten sevin. Low-Medium risk. |
| ἀναγεγεννημένοι… ἐκ σπορᾶς ἀφθάρτου anagegennēmenoi… ek sporas aphthartou having been born again… of imperishable seed | Reuses the ἀναγεννάω root from 1:3 (perfect tense here — abiding result) “born again… of imperishable seed” | Continues and grounds 1:3’s regeneration language; the “seed” is identified in 1:25 as the living, abiding word of God. | HIGH RISK. “Tükenmez/çürümez bir tohumdan… yeniden doğmuş olan.” Must be rendered consistently with 1:3’s ἀναγεννάω treatment (God’s causative act, perfect/abiding result) — see cross-reference note above. |
| λόγος θεοῦ ζῶντος καὶ μένοντος logos theou zōntos kai menontos word of God, living and abiding/remaining | — “the word of God, which lives and abides forever” | Grounds the new birth in the enduring, living word — echoes but is distinct from John’s Logos-Christology (there, λόγος is a Christological title; here, it is God’s spoken/written message). | MEDIUM RISK. “Tanrı’nın diri ve kalıcı sözü.” Flag distinction from John’s capital-S “Söz” (Logos-as-Christ) so the two uses are not conflated in teaching material — this is God’s word/message, not a second occurrence of John 1:1’s title. |
CHAPTER 2
2:1–3 — Pure spiritual milk
| Terms | Variants | Contextual theological meaning | Turkish rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| κακίαν, δόλον, ὑποκρίσεις, φθόνους, καταλαλιάς kakian, dolon, hypokriseis, phthonous, katalalias malice, deceit, hypocrisies, envies, slanders | Vice list ”malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, slander” | Practical holiness — sins to be put away as part of newborn identity. | Kötülük, hile, ikiyüzlülük, kıskançlık, iftira. Note: reuses İkiyüzlülük (hypocrisy) exactly from the Galatians package (2:13). Low-Medium risk. |
| ὡς ἀρτιγέννητα βρέφη… τὸ λογικὸν ἄδολον γάλα hōs artigennēta brephē… to logikon adolon gala as newborn infants… the [word-related], unadulterated milk | λογικός here = “belonging to the word/rational” (word-play on λόγος) “like newborn infants, crave the pure spiritual milk of the word” | Growth metaphor building directly on the new-birth theme of 1:3, 23. | NEW TERM. “Yeni doğmuş bebekler gibi… sözün katıksız/saf sütünü özleyin.” Medium risk; the λόγος word-play (λογικόν) cannot be fully carried into Turkish — supply a brief teaching note connecting it to 1:23’s “word of God.” |
| ἐγεύσασθε ὅτι χρηστὸς ὁ κύριος egeusasthe hoti chrēstos ho kyrios you have tasted that the Lord is good/kind | Citation of Psalm 34:8 ”you have tasted that the Lord is good” | Reuses baseline Critical term Rab. | Rab’bin iyiliğini tattınız. Reuse Rab baseline exactly. |
2:4–10 — Living stone; holy and royal priesthood (CORE DOCTRINE PASSAGE)
| Terms | Variants | Contextual theological meaning | Turkish rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| λίθον ζῶντα lithon zōnta a living stone | Messianic building-stone imagery, citing Psalm 118:22 and Isaiah 28:16 ”a living stone” | Christ as the foundation stone of the new spiritual temple — a messianic-fulfillment claim requiring OT background. | HIGH RISK. “Diri taş.” Requires accompanying OT-fulfillment teaching (per the baseline’s fulfillment_of_prophecy doctrine); low OT literacy assumed for most readers. |
| ὑπὸ ἀνθρώπων μὲν ἀποδεδοκιμασμένον, παρὰ δὲ θεῷ ἐκλεκτὸν ἔντιμον hypo anthrōpōn men apodedokimasmenon, para de theō eklekton entimon rejected by men, but chosen and precious with God | — “rejected by men but chosen and precious in God’s sight” | Rejection/vindication pattern applied to Christ, and by extension to the readers’ own social rejection. | Reddedilmiş… seçilmiş ve değerli. Reuse seçilmiş (election vocabulary). Medium-High risk; ties Christ’s rejection directly to believers’ own experience of social marginalization (2:11–12). |
| οἶκος πνευματικός oikos pneumatikos spiritual house | — “spiritual house” | The church as a Spirit-indwelt temple, replacing/fulfilling the physical Jerusalem Temple. | Ruhsal ev. Medium risk; requires brief Temple-background note for readers with low OT literacy. |
| ἱεράτευμα ἅγιον hierateuma hagion a holy priesthood | ἱεράτευμα = priestly body/order (collective, not individual priest) “a holy priesthood” | The whole church, corporately, exercising priestly access to God — not a specialized clerical class. | CRITICAL — HOMOGRAPH RISK. “Kutsal kâhinler topluluğu.” Turkish kâhin (priest, the established Kitabı Mukaddes term for OT/NT ἱερεύς, e.g. “başkâhin” = high priest) is visually and phonetically close to kahin (fortune-teller/soothsayer — explicitly rejected in the baseline’s prophet entry for exactly this reason). This is a genuine homograph-adjacent collision unique to this doctrine in Turkish, comparable in kind (though narrower in scope) to the Galatians package’s sünnet/Sünnet collision. Mandatory theologian review and a first-use disambiguating note distinguishing kâhin (priest) from kahin (soothsayer) is required every time this doctrine is taught. |
| βασίλειον ἱεράτευμα basileion hierateuma a royal priesthood | Citing Exodus 19:6 ”a royal priesthood” | The corporate church’s royal-priestly identity in Christ — foundational to the Church as a Holy and Royal Priesthood doctrine. | CRITICAL. “Kral soyundan/kral topluluğundan bir kâhinler topluluğu” or “kraliyet kâhinliği.” Carries the same kâhin/kahin homograph risk as above, compounded by the “royal” qualifier’s own potential political-monarchy overtones in a secular-republic context (lower risk than the kâhin issue but worth a brief teaching note that this is not a claim about earthly political rule). |
| ἔθνος ἅγιον ethnos hagion a holy nation | Citing Exodus 19:6 ”a holy nation” | The church’s set-apart, corporate national-type identity, in continuity with and fulfillment of Israel’s calling. | Kutsal ulus. Medium risk; ulus (nation) rather than uluslar (baseline’s Gentiles/nations term) — distinguish carefully in teaching notes since this is a different, positive sense of “nation” applied to the church itself, not the baseline’s Uluslar (= non-Jewish peoples). |
| λαὸς εἰς περιποίησιν laos eis peripoiēsin a people for [God’s own] possession | περιποίησις = that which is acquired/possessed for oneself ”a people for [God’s] own possession,” “God’s special possession” | The church as God’s own treasured, acquired people. | Tanrı’nın kendi mülkü olan halk. Low-Medium risk. |
| ἠλεημένοι ēleēmenoi (perf. pass. ptc. of ἐλεέω) having been shown mercy | — “you have received mercy” | Reuses Merhamet — Gentile inclusion into what was formerly Israel’s exclusive identity. | Merhamet görmüş olanlar. Reuse Merhamet; connects to the baseline’s unity_of_jews_and_gentiles Medium doctrine. |
2:11–12 — Sojourners and exiles among the nations
| Terms | Variants | Contextual theological meaning | Turkish rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| πάροικοι καὶ παρεπίδημοι paroikoi kai parepidēmoi resident aliens and temporary sojourners | Same root as 1:1’s παρεπίδημος; πάροικος = one who lives alongside/among but does not belong ”aliens and strangers,” “foreigners and exiles” | Reinforces 1:1’s identity-marker; believers’ social location as outsiders within their own society. | HIGH RISK (pastoral). “Yabancılar ve konuklar / göçmenler.” As at 1:1, resonates meaningfully with diaspora/minority-community experience without being reduced to political commentary; theologian and native-speaker review recommended for framing. |
| ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν en tois ethnesin among the Gentiles/nations | Reuses baseline Uluslar ”among the Gentiles,” “among the pagans” | Here ἔθνη refers to the surrounding non-believing society broadly, continuing the letter’s outsider-perspective theme. | Uluslar arasında — reuse baseline Uluslar exactly, with context-note that here it denotes the general surrounding society, not the Jew/Gentile distinction specifically. |
| ἐν ἡμέρᾳ ἐπισκοπῆς en hēmera episkopēs in the day of visitation/inspection | ἐπισκοπή = oversight, visitation — same root as ἐπίσκοπος (overseer, 2:25; 5:2) “on the day he visits us,” “in the day of visitation” | Eschatological visitation, when God’s oversight becomes evident even to outside observers. | NEW TERM. “Tanrı’nın (bizi) ziyaret ettiği/gözettiği gün.” Medium risk; note the root-connection to ἐπίσκοπος (overseer), relevant to the ch. 5 elders doctrine. |
2:13–17 — Submission to civil authority
| Terms | Variants | Contextual theological meaning | Turkish rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| ὑποτάγητε πάσῃ ἀνθρωπίνῃ κτίσει hypotagēte pasē anthrōpinē ktisei submit to every human institution | ὑποτάσσω = to place/rank oneself under; here of civil/social order ”submit yourselves to every human institution/authority” | Foundational verse of the Submission to Authority and Christlike Endurance doctrine — voluntary ordering of oneself under civil authority, for the Lord’s sake. | CRITICAL. Reuses the Ephesians package’s submission-verb convention. “Her insani yönetime/otoriteye bağımlı olun.” Must be kept distinct in teaching material from the marriage-submission use at 3:1 and the master-submission use at 2:18 — same Greek verb, three distinct social spheres, each requiring its own pastoral framing. Never license coercive state authority nor absolute, unconditional obedience (the text itself is bounded by “for the Lord’s sake,” 2:13, and by the limits implied in Acts 5:29-style precedent elsewhere in the NT). Mandatory theologian review. |
| βασιλεῖ… ἡγεμόσιν basilei… hēgemosin to the king/emperor… to governors | — “to the emperor… to governors” | Concrete Roman imperial offices; note historical specificity (not a claim about any particular modern government form). | Krala… valilere. Low-Medium risk; brief historical-distancing note recommended (Roman imperial context, not commentary on the modern Turkish state). |
| ὡς ἐλεύθεροι… μὴ ὡς ἐπικάλυμμα… τῆς κακίας τὴν ἐλευθερίαν hōs eleutheroi… mē hōs epikalymma… tēs kakias tēn eleutherian as free people… not using freedom as a cover for evil | ἐλευθερία = freedom ”live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil” | Reuses the Galatians package’s Critical term Özgürlük, here applied to the freedom/civil-submission relationship rather than the freedom/Torah relationship. | CRITICAL. Özgürlük — reuse baseline exactly. Flag clearly in teaching notes that this is a different application of the same Critical term from its Galatians usage: not freedom from Torah-justification, but freedom that voluntarily submits to civil order rather than exploiting liberty as license. Theologian review mandatory per the term’s standing Critical status. |
| τιμήσατε… τὸν θεὸν φοβεῖσθε, τὸν βασιλέα τιμᾶτε timēsate… ton theon phobeisthe, ton basilea timate honor… fear God, honor the king | φόβος (fear) reserved for God alone; τιμή (honor) extended also to human authority ”honor everyone… fear God, honor the emperor” | Careful distinction: only God is feared (in the reverential sense); the king receives honor, a lesser category — an implicit relativizing of civil authority under God’s ultimate authority. | NEW TERM PAIR. “Tanrı’dan korkun, krala saygı gösterin.” Medium-High risk; the fear/honor distinction is theologically load-bearing (guards against absolutizing state authority) and must be preserved, not collapsed into a single verb. |
2:18–25 — Servants; Christ’s example of substitutionary suffering (CORE DOCTRINE PASSAGE)
| Terms | Variants | Contextual theological meaning | Turkish rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| οἱ οἰκέται hoi oiketai household servants | Household-slave category, narrower than δοῦλος but functionally overlapping ”servants,” “household slaves” | Applies the submission doctrine to the household-slave/master relationship. | HIGH RISK. Ev hizmetçileri / köleler. Reuse the Ephesians package’s köleler/efendiler convention; requires the same explicit historical-distancing framing (first-century Greco-Roman household slavery, with the Ottoman Empire’s own abolished institution as relevant but non-equivalent background) mandated for Ephesians 6:5-9. |
| πάσχων ἀδίκως paschōn adikōs suffering unjustly | πάσχω = to suffer (the letter’s dominant verb, 12 occurrences) “suffering unjustly,” “suffering wrongfully” | First occurrence of πάσχω’s suffering-for-doing-right theme, which climaxes in 3:14-18 and 4:1, 12-19. | NEW TERM, recurring — CRITICAL for the letter’s central doctrine. “Haksız yere acı çekmek.” πάσχω must be rendered consistently throughout (2:19, 20, 21, 23; 3:14, 17, 18; 4:1, 15, 19; 5:1, 10) — this consistency is itself load-bearing for the Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake doctrine. |
| Χριστὸς ἔπαθεν ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν Christos epathen hyper hymōn Christ suffered for/on behalf of you | ὑπέρ = “on behalf of, for the sake of” — substitutionary/representative preposition ”Christ suffered for you,” “Christ also suffered for you” | The letter’s key substitutionary-suffering statement, distinct from (but complementary to) Paul’s ἔδωκεν ἑαυτόν (gave himself) language. | CRITICAL. “Mesih sizin için acı çekti.” Must be taught alongside the Galatians package’s atonement discipline (atonement_curse_bearing, “Kendini feda etti”) as a related but distinct emphasis: here Christ’s own suffering itself, not only his self-giving, is the substitutionary act on believers’ behalf. Mandatory theologian review. |
| τὰς ἁμαρτίας ἡμῶν αὐτὸς ἀνήνεγκεν ἐν τῷ σώματι αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τὸ ξύλον tas hamartias hēmōn autos anēnegken en tō sōmati autou epi to xylon he himself bore our sins in his body upon the tree | ξύλον = wood/tree, an explicit echo of Deuteronomy 21:23’s tree-curse and Galatians 3:13’s “hung on a tree" "he himself bore our sins in his body on the tree” | Direct intertextual echo of the Galatians package’s curse_of_the_law doctrine (Christ becoming a curse on the “tree”). Reuses established Çarmıh for the cross itself. | CRITICAL. “Günahlarımızı kendi bedeninde çarmıha (ağaca) taşıdı.” Cross-reference requirement: render consistently with the Galatians package’s tree/curse-bearing discipline (never absorbing curse-power language; judicial substitution only). Reuse Çarmıh. Mandatory theologian review. |
| οὗ τῷ μώλωπι ἰάθητε hou tō mōlōpi iathēte by whose wound/bruise you have been healed | μώλωψ = a wound, bruise, welt from a blow; citing Isaiah 53:5 ”by his wounds you have been healed” | Primarily a statement about healing from sin, not a general promise of physical healing — must guard against a prosperity-gospel misreading. | HIGH RISK. “O’nun yaraları sayesinde şifa buldunuz.” Teaching note required distinguishing the primary spiritual-healing-from-sin sense (the passage’s own context, 2:24’s surrounding clauses) from any inference of guaranteed physical healing. |
| ποιμένα καὶ ἐπίσκοπον τῶν ψυχῶν ὑμῶν poimena kai episkopon tōn psychōn hymōn shepherd and overseer of your souls | Reuses ψυχή from 1:9; ἐπίσκοπος anticipates 5:2’s ἐπισκοποῦντες ”the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls” | Christ himself as the model and ultimate referent for the human shepherd/overseer role developed in chapter 5. | NEW TERM. “Canlarınızın Çobanı ve Gözetmeni.” Medium-High risk; establishes the Çoban (shepherd) and gözetmen (overseer) vocabulary that chapter 5’s elders doctrine will build directly upon — consistency across the two passages is theologically significant. |
CHAPTER 3
3:1–7 — Wives, husbands, holiness in conduct (CORE DOCTRINE PASSAGE, part)
| Terms | Variants | Contextual theological meaning | Turkish rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| γυναῖκες ὑποτασσόμεναι τοῖς … ἀνδράσιν gynaikes hypotassomenai tois andrasin wives submitting to [their] husbands | Same verb-family as 2:13, 2:18 ”wives, be submissive to your husbands” | Applies the submission doctrine to marriage. | CRITICAL. Reuse the Ephesians package’s convention exactly: “eşinize bağımlı olun.” Requires the identical mandatory theologian AND native-speaker review triggered by Ephesians 5:22-24, given Turkey’s 1926 Medeni Kanun and ongoing family-law debate. Must not be taught in isolation from 3:7’s parallel instruction to husbands. |
| ἄνευ λόγου… διὰ τῆς τῶν γυναικῶν ἀναστροφῆς aneu logou… dia tēs tōn gynaikōn anastrophēs without a word… through the wives’ conduct | Reuses ἀναστροφή (conduct) from 1:15 ”without a word, by their conduct” | Practical holiness (Holiness in Conduct doctrine) applied specifically within a mixed-faith marriage context (an unbelieving husband). | Yaşayışlarıyla, söz söylemeden. Reuse ἀναστροφή/yaşayış convention established at 1:15. |
| ὁ κρυπτὸς τῆς καρδίας ἄνθρωπος ἐν τῷ ἀφθάρτῳ τοῦ πραέως καὶ ἡσυχίου πνεύματος ho kryptos tēs kardias anthrōpos en tō aphthartō tou praeos kai hēsychiou pneumatos the hidden person of the heart, in the imperishable [ornament] of a gentle and quiet spirit | πραΰς = gentle, not harsh; ἡσύχιος = calm, peaceable (not “silent” in the sense of voiceless) “the hidden person of the heart… a gentle and quiet spirit” | Inner character valued above external adornment — a positive, non-demeaning theological anthropology point, not a mandate for female voicelessness. | HIGH RISK (pastoral). “Yüreğin gizli insanı… yumuşak ve sakin bir ruh.” Teaching note required: ἡσύχιος (translated “quiet”) denotes peaceable calm of temperament, not enforced silence or voicelessness; must not be taught in a way that could license suppression of a wife’s voice or participation. |
| ἀσθενεστέρῳ σκεύει asthenesterō skeuei weaker vessel | σκεῦος = vessel, instrument (a common NT metaphor for a person as an instrument God uses) “the weaker vessel” | Likely refers to comparative physical strength or social vulnerability, not spiritual or moral inferiority — must be handled with pastoral care. | HIGH RISK (pastoral). “Daha güçsüz bir kap [olarak].” Mandatory teaching note distinguishing this from any claim of spiritual/moral inferiority; the same verse immediately affirms wives as joint heirs (below), which relativizes any hierarchical over-reading. |
| συγκληρονόμοι χάριτος ζωῆς synklēronomoi charitos zōēs joint/fellow heirs of the grace of life | Reuses Mirasçı and Lütuf ”fellow heirs of the grace of life” | Direct affirmation of full spiritual co-equality between husband and wife in inheritance, balancing the preceding “weaker vessel” language. | Yaşam lütfunun ortak mirasçıları. Reuse Mirasçı and Lütuf exactly; flag as the necessary counterbalancing statement to the “weaker vessel” clause. |
3:8–12 — Unity and blessing instead of retaliation
| Terms | Variants | Contextual theological meaning | Turkish rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| ὁμόφρονες, συμπαθεῖς, φιλάδελφοι, εὔσπλαγχνοι, ταπεινόφρονες homophrones, sympatheis, philadelphoi, eusplanchnoi, tapeinophrones of one mind, sympathetic, loving as brothers, tenderhearted, humble-minded | Virtue list; ταπεινόφρων anticipates the ch. 5 humility doctrine ”unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, tender hearts, humility” | Community-ethic list; ταπεινοφροσύνη (humility) recurs as a structural theme through to 5:5-6. | Aynı düşüncede, şefkatli, kardeşleri gibi seven, sevecen, alçakgönüllü. Low-Medium risk; flag alçakgönüllü (humble) for cross-reference consistency with ch. 5’s ταπεινοφροσύνη doctrine. |
| μὴ ἀποδιδόντες κακὸν ἀντὶ κακοῦ… εὐλογοῦντες mē apodidontes kakon anti kakou… eulogountes not repaying evil for evil… but blessing | — “not repaying evil for evil… but blessing” | Practical outworking of Christlike endurance under provocation, citing Psalm 34:12-16. | Kötülüğe kötülükle karşılık vermeyin… kutsayın/hayır dileyin. Low-Medium risk. |
3:13–17 — Suffering for righteousness’ sake (CORE DOCTRINE PASSAGE)
| Terms | Variants | Contextual theological meaning | Turkish rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| πάσχειν διὰ δικαιοσύνην paschein dia dikaiosynēn to suffer on account of righteousness | Reuses πάσχω (2:19 etc.) and baseline Critical term δικαιοσύνη/Doğruluk ”if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake” | The doctrine’s namesake verse: suffering that results from righteous conduct, not suffering that produces righteousness (which would collapse into a merit framework). | CRITICAL. “Doğruluk için acı çekerseniz.” Reuse baseline Doğruluk exactly — the Critical-tier caution against salih amel framing is directly relevant: suffering here is a consequence of an already-possessed righteous standing/conduct, never a means of acquiring righteousness before God. Mandatory theologian review. |
| μὴ φοβηθῆτε τὸν φόβον αὐτῶν mē phobēthēte ton phobon autōn do not fear their fear/intimidation | Citing Isaiah 8:12-13 ”do not fear what they fear,” “have no fear of their threats” | Courage grounded in the sanctifying of Christ as Lord (following clause), not in circumstance. | Onların korkularından korkmayın / gözdağından yılmayın. Low-Medium risk. |
| κύριον δὲ τὸν Χριστὸν ἁγιάσατε ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν kyrion de ton Christon hagiasate en tais kardiais hymōn sanctify/set apart Christ as Lord in your hearts | Reuses baseline Rab and Kutsal-family vocabulary; citing Isaiah 8:13 (LXX has “the LORD” where Peter substitutes “Christ”) “in your hearts, honor Christ the Lord as holy,” “sanctify Christ as Lord” | A striking direct application of an OT YHWH-text to Christ — a strong deity-of-Christ claim embedded in a pastoral exhortation. | CRITICAL. “Yüreklerinizde Mesih’i Rab olarak kutsayın.” Reuse baseline Rab exactly. Flag for mandatory theologian review: this verse’s OT substitution (Christ standing in the text’s own “the LORD” slot) is a significant, easily-overlooked deity-of-Christ data point requiring explicit teaching-note treatment. |
| ἀπολογία… μετὰ πραΰτητος καὶ φόβου apologia… meta prautētos kai phobou a defense/reasoned account… with gentleness and respect/fear | ἀπολογία = a reasoned, verbal defense/answer (not a legal “apology” in the English sense) “a reason for the hope… with gentleness and respect” | Believers are called to reasoned, verbal readiness to explain their hope — directly relevant to the baseline’s evangelism High-risk doctrine and its pastoral/legal-risk caution in the Turkish context. | HIGH RISK. “Umudunuzun nedenini, yumuşaklık ve saygıyla açıklayın.” Ties to the baseline Müjdeleme convention (never misyonerlik); flag for the same pastoral/safety review the baseline mandates for evangelism passages, given real social/legal risk of proselytization discourse in this context. |
| ἀγαθὴν συνείδησιν agathēn syneidēsin a good conscience | συνείδησις recurs at 3:21 ”a good conscience” | Integrity between profession and conduct, so that any suffering incurred is unjust rather than deserved. | İyi bir vicdan. Low-Medium risk; note recurrence at 3:21 for cross-reference consistency. |
3:18–22 — Christ’s substitutionary suffering; proclamation to the spirits (CORE DOCTRINE PASSAGE)
| Terms | Variants | Contextual theological meaning | Turkish rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Χριστὸς ἅπαξ περὶ ἁμαρτιῶν ἔπαθεν, δίκαιος ὑπὲρ ἀδίκων Christos hapax peri hamartiōn epathen, dikaios hyper adikōn Christ suffered once for sins, [the] righteous [one] for/on behalf of the unrighteous | ἅπαξ = once, once-for-all (not repeatable) “Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous” | The letter’s most concentrated substitutionary-atonement statement: once-for-all, the righteous One for the unrighteous many. Reuses δίκαιος/Doğruluk family vocabulary and πάσχω. | CRITICAL. “Mesih de günahlar için, bir defaya mahsus olmak üzere, doğru biri olarak doğru olmayanlar için acı çekti.” ἅπαξ (“once for all”) must not be softened or lost — it parallels the Galatians package’s discipline on crucified_with_christ’s once-for-all, non-repeatable emphasis. Mandatory theologian review. |
| ἵνα ὑμᾶς προσαγάγῃ τῷ θεῷ hina hymas prosagagē tō theō in order to bring you to God | προσάγω = to bring near, to give access ”that he might bring you to God” | States the purpose of Christ’s suffering: reconciled access to God, echoing the Ephesians package’s dividing-wall-removed doctrine. | Sizi Tanrı’ya götürmek/yaklaştırmak için. Medium risk. |
| θανατωθεὶς μὲν σαρκὶ ζωοποιηθεὶς δὲ πνεύματι thanatōtheis men sarki zōopoiētheis de pneumati having been put to death in [the] flesh, but made alive in [the] spirit | A genuinely debated exegetical construction (bodily death / spiritual or Spirit-empowered resurrection-state) “being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit” | One of the most contested clauses in the letter; multiple viable exegetical positions exist regarding the referent of πνεῦμα here (Christ’s own spirit, the Holy Spirit, or his resurrected mode of existence). | CRITICAL — FLAG, DO NOT ADJUDICATE. “Bedence öldürüldü, ruhça diriltildi.” Per the baseline’s convention for genuinely contested clauses (e.g., Mark 13:32, John 7:53-8:11), render literally and flag for mandatory theologian review rather than resolving the exegetical debate in the translated text itself. |
| τοῖς ἐν φυλακῇ πνεύμασιν πορευθεὶς ἐκήρυξεν tois en phylakē pneumasin poreutheis ekēryxen having gone, he proclaimed to the spirits in prison | κηρύσσω = to proclaim/herald (the same verb-family used for gospel proclamation elsewhere, though its precise content here is debated) “went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison” | The letter’s most theologically disputed passage (Christ’s Proclamation to the Spirits, one of this curriculum’s named doctrines) — interpretations range from Christ’s Spirit preaching through Noah to a post-death proclamation to fallen angels/spirits. | CRITICAL — FLAG, DO NOT ADJUDICATE. “Ruhta giderek hapisteki ruhlara vaaz verdi/ilan etti.” Mandatory theologian review for every occurrence; do not resolve the identity of the “spirits,” the timing, or the content of the proclamation in the translated text — supply the range of standard interpretive options in accompanying teaching material only. |
| ἀπειθήσασίν ποτε… ἐν ἡμέραις Νῶε κατασκευαζομένης κιβωτοῦ apeithēsasin pote… en hēmerais Nōe kataskeuazomenēs kibōtou who formerly disobeyed… in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared | κιβωτός = ark/chest (also used for the ark of the covenant elsewhere in the NT) “who formerly did not obey… in the days of Noah, while the ark was being built” | Grounds the disputed proclamation in the Noah narrative; requires OT background for readers with low OT literacy. | NEW TERM. “Eskiden söz dinlememiş olan… Nuh’un günlerinde, gemi yapılırken.” Medium risk; brief Genesis 6-9 background note required. |
| δι’ ὕδατος διεσώθησαν… ὀκτὼ ψυχαί di’ hydatos diesōthēsan… oktō psychai were brought safely through water… eight souls/persons | ψυχή here plainly means “persons,” reinforcing the whole-person sense noted at 1:9 ”were saved through water… eight persons” | Sets up the water/baptism typology of the next clause. | Su aracılığıyla kurtuldular… sekiz kişi. Reuse Kurtuluş-family vocabulary; low-medium risk. |
| ὃ καὶ ὑμᾶς ἀντίτυπον νῦν σῴζει βάπτισμα ho kai hymas antitypon nyn sōzei baptisma which [water], as a corresponding type, now saves you — [namely] baptism | ἀντίτυπος = corresponding pattern/counterpart (technical typological term); reuses baseline Vaftiz ”baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you” | A theologically dense typological statement directly engaging baptismal-regeneration debate — historically one of the most contested verses in Christian sacramental theology. | CRITICAL — FLAG, DO NOT ADJUDICATE. “Vaftiz de bunun karşılığı/örneğidir, şimdi sizi kurtarıyor.” Reuse baseline Vaftiz exactly. Per the baseline’s convention for the Words of Institution (Matthew 26:26-28) and similarly weighty sacramental texts: render exactly, flag for mandatory theologian review, do not adjudicate the underlying confessional debate (baptismal regeneration vs. baptism as a sign/seal of a salvation already granted) within the translated text. |
| οὐ σαρκὸς ἀπόθεσις ῥύπου ἀλλὰ συνειδήσεως ἀγαθῆς ἐπερώτημα εἰς θεόν ou sarkos apothesis rypou alla syneidēseōs agathēs eperōtēma eis theon not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but the appeal/pledge of a good conscience toward God | ἐπερώτημα = a legal/contractual term for a formal appeal, request, or pledge ”not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience” | Immediately qualifies the previous clause: baptism’s saving significance is explicitly NOT physical/ritual cleansing (guards against a wudu-adjacent misreading) but a conscience-level transaction with God. | HIGH RISK. “Bedenin kirden temizlenmesi değil, Tanrı’ya karşı iyi bir vicdanın dilekçesi/sözü olarak.” This clause is the passage’s own internal safeguard against a ritual-purification (tahara/abdest-adjacent) misreading of baptism — must be preserved with its full negating force (“not… but…”), reusing Vaftiz and vicdan (conscience, established at 3:16). |
| δεξιᾷ θεοῦ… ὑποταγέντων αὐτῷ ἀγγέλων καὶ ἐξουσιῶν καὶ δυνάμεων dexia theou… hypotagentōn autō angelōn kai exousiōn kai dynameōn at the right hand of God… angels and authorities and powers having been subjected to him | Exaltation and cosmic-authority language, echoing Philippians 2:9-11 and Ephesians 1:20-23 ”at God’s right hand… angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him” | Concludes the passage with Christ’s exaltation and universal cosmic authority — reuses the pipeline’s established exaltation/universal-lordship vocabulary. | CRITICAL. “Tanrı’nın sağında… melekler, yetkiler ve güçler O’na bağımlı kılınmış olarak.” Reuse the Philippians package’s highly_exalted/universal_lordship_confession conventions and the Ephesians package’s armor_of_god “principalities and powers” convention (real apocalyptic cosmology, noted resonance with but not conflated with Islamic cin/şeytan vocabulary). Mandatory theologian review. |
CHAPTER 4
4:1–6 — Living for God, not human passions; gospel and the dead
| Terms | Variants | Contextual theological meaning | Turkish rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| παθόντος σαρκί pathontos sarki having suffered in the flesh | σάρξ here = the literal, physical body/mortal life, NOT the Galatians package’s technical benlik (self-reliant fallen nature) sense ”since Christ suffered in the flesh” | Important semantic-range caution: σάρξ has (at least) two distinct technical senses across this Language Package. | HIGH RISK — cross-package disambiguation required. “Bedende acı çekmiş olarak.” Render σάρξ here as beden (physical body), explicitly NOT as benlik (the Galatians package’s self-reliant-nature sense). A translator following the Galatians convention by reflex risks a serious category error here; flag for theologian review specifically on this ground. |
| μηκέτι ἀνθρώπων ἐπιθυμίαις ἀλλὰ θελήματι θεοῦ mēketi anthrōpōn epithymiais alla thelēmati theou no longer by human desires but by the will of God | — “no longer for human passions but for the will of God” | Continues the letter’s holiness-in-conduct theme. | İnsan tutkularına göre değil, Tanrı’nın isteğine göre. Low-Medium risk. |
| ἀσωτίαις, οἰνοφλυγίαις… εἰδωλολατρίαις asōtiais, oinophlygiais… eidōlolatriais debauchery, drunkenness… idolatries | Reuses Putperestlik exactly from the Galatians package ”debauchery, drunkenness… idolatry” | Vice-list contrasting the readers’ former pagan lifestyle. | Sefahat, aşırı içki… putperestlik. Reuse Putperestlik baseline exactly. |
| εὐηγγελίσθη καὶ νεκροῖς euēngelisthē kai nekrois the gospel was preached also to the dead | Reuses baseline Müjde; a genuinely disputed clause regarding referent and timing, connected exegetically to 3:19’s proclamation-to-spirits passage ”the gospel was preached even to the dead” | Second of the letter’s two contested proclamation-to-the-dead/spirits statements; scholarly opinion divides on whether this refers to the same event as 3:19, a different event, or a general principle about the dead-in-Christ. | CRITICAL — FLAG, DO NOT ADJUDICATE. “Ölülere de Müjde bildirildi.” Reuse baseline Müjde exactly. Cross-reference to 3:18-22’s proclamation-to-spirits doctrine is mandatory; treat as a linked but separately-flagged exegetical question, per the baseline’s convention for contested clauses. |
4:7–11 — Stewardship of grace-gifts
| Terms | Variants | Contextual theological meaning | Turkish rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| ἀγάπην ἐκτενῆ… καλύπτει πλῆθος ἁμαρτιῶν agapēn ektenē… kalyptei plēthos hamartiōn fervent/stretched-out love… covers a multitude of sins | Citing Proverbs 10:12 ”above all, love one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins” | Practical church-community ethic; “covers” here is relational/social, not a claim about atonement for sin before God (which is Christ’s exclusive work per 2:24; 3:18). | MEDIUM RISK. “Her şeyden önce birbirinizi candan sevin, çünkü sevgi çok günahı örter.” Teaching note recommended distinguishing this relational/social “covering” from the atoning work exclusively attributed to Christ elsewhere in the letter, to avoid an inadvertent works-covering-sin misreading. |
| ἕκαστος καθὼς ἔλαβεν χάρισμα hekastos kathōs elaben charisma each one, according as he has received a gift [of grace] | χάρισμα reuses baseline Ruhsal armağanlar (spiritual_gifts) family, rooted in Lütuf ”as each has received a gift” | Every believer, without exception, has received some grace-gift for community service. | Her biri Tanrı’dan aldığı ruhsal armağana göre. Reuse Ruhsal armağanlar and Lütuf baseline exactly. |
| καλοὶ οἰκονόμοι ποικίλης χάριτος θεοῦ kaloi oikonomoi poikilēs charitos theou good stewards of the varied/many-colored grace of God | οἰκονόμος = household steward/manager ”good stewards of God’s varied grace” | Believers as trustees, not owners, of grace-gifts given for others’ benefit. | Tanrı’nın çeşit çeşit lütfunun iyi kâhyaları. Reuse Lütuf; low-medium risk on kâhya (steward) — a clear, non-collision Turkish word distinct from the kâhin/kahin homograph risk noted at 2:5, 9. |
4:12–19 — Suffering as a Christian; fiery trial
| Terms | Variants | Contextual theological meaning | Turkish rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| τῇ πυρώσει… μὴ ξενίζεσθε tē pyrōsei… mē xenizesthe at the fiery ordeal… do not be surprised/regard as strange | πύρωσις = burning, fiery trial (refining-metal image, echoing 1:7’s δοκίμιον) “do not be surprised at the fiery trial” | Continues 1:6-7’s refining-fire motif; suffering is to be expected, not treated as an anomaly for believers. | NEW TERM — cross-reference 1:7. “İçinizdeki ateşli sınav karşısında hiç şaşırmayın.” Medium risk; keep consistent with δοκίμιον’s fire-refining imagery at 1:7 for thematic cohesion. |
| κοινωνεῖτε τοῖς τοῦ Χριστοῦ παθήμασιν χαίρετε koinōneite tois tou Christou pathēmasin chairete share/have fellowship in Christ’s sufferings, rejoice | κοινωνέω reuses baseline Paydaşlık (fellowship) root, applied here specifically to suffering ”rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings” | An unusual and theologically rich application of fellowship-vocabulary to shared suffering, not merely shared blessing. | HIGH RISK. “Mesih’in çektiği acılara ortak olduğunuz için sevinin.” Reuse Paydaşlık root; flag as a distinctive extension of the fellowship doctrine into the suffering domain — worth explicit teaching-note treatment given how counter-intuitive “fellowship in suffering, and rejoicing in it” is likely to sound. |
| εἰ ὀνειδίζεσθε ἐν ὀνόματι Χριστοῦ, μακάριοι ei oneidizesthe en onomati Christou, makarioi if you are reproached in the name of Christ, blessed [are you] | μακάριος reuses the Matthew package’s Ne mutlu established term exactly ”if you are insulted for the name of Christ, blessed are you” | Direct thematic echo of the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:11-12) applied to the letter’s own persecuted readers. | Ne mutlu size. Reuse Ne mutlu baseline exactly; note the Beatitudes cross-reference for teaching material. |
| μὴ ὡς φονεὺς ἢ κλέπτης… εἰ δὲ ὡς Χριστιανός mē hōs phoneus ē kleptēs… ei de hōs Christianos not as a murderer or thief… but if as a Christian | Χριστιανός is a genuinely rare NT word (also Acts 11:26; 26:28) — the term “Christian” itself, likely originally an outsider’s label ”not as a murderer or thief… but if as a Christian” | One of only three NT occurrences of the actual word “Christian” — historically significant as (probably) an outsider-applied social label being reclaimed positively. | NEW TERM, historically significant. Hristiyan. Low doctrinal risk (well-established loanword in modern Turkish), but flag its rarity and originally-outsider-applied social-labeling background for teaching material, distinguishing the social/identity dimension of the term from the theological content carried elsewhere by İman, Mesih’e ait olmak, etc. |
| ἄρχεται τὸ κρίμα ἀπὸ τοῦ οἴκου τοῦ θεοῦ archetai to krima apo tou oikou tou theou judgment begins from the house of God | Citing Ezekiel 9:6 pattern ”judgment begins with the household/family of God” | A sobering statement of accountability beginning with the covenant community itself, not only outsiders. | Yargı Tanrı’nın evinden/ailesinden başlar. Low-Medium risk; brief OT background note recommended (Ezekiel). |
| δίκαιος μόλις σῴζεται dikaios molis sōzetai the righteous is scarcely/with difficulty saved | Citing Proverbs 11:31 LXX; reuses baseline Doğruluk and Kurtuluş ”if the righteous is scarcely saved” | A rhetorical a fortiori argument (if even the righteous barely escapes, how much more the ungodly) — not a statement casting doubt on the certainty of salvation established in 1:5, 9. | HIGH RISK. “Doğru kişi zorlukla kurtuluyorsa.” Teaching note required to reconcile with 1:5’s already-secured, certain salvation (assurance_of_salvation Critical doctrine) — this is rhetorical emphasis on the gravity of judgment for the ungodly, not a retraction of assurance. |
| πιστῷ κτίστῃ pistō ktistē to a faithful Creator | κτίστης = Creator (rare NT word, only here) “to a faithful Creator” | God as reliable Creator, a fitting ground for entrusting one’s soul amid suffering. | Güvenilir Yaratıcı’ya. Low-Medium risk; note baseline’s caution that “Yaratıcı” was rejected as a substitute for “Baba” elsewhere — here it is legitimately used in its own right as a Creator-title, not as an avoidance of relational Father-language, so no conflict with that earlier caution. |
CHAPTER 5
5:1–5 — Elders and humility (CORE DOCTRINE PASSAGE)
| Terms | Variants | Contextual theological meaning | Turkish rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| πρεσβυτέρους… συμπρεσβύτερος presbyterous… sympresbyteros elders… fellow elder | πρεσβύτερος = elder, both an age-term and (by extension) a church-office term ”elders… a fellow elder” | Peter identifies himself as a fellow elder, not a hierarchically superior office-holder — grounding the humility exhortation in his own example. | CRITICAL/HIGH RISK — HOMOGRAPH-ADJACENT. İhtiyarlar / ihtiyar kardeşiniz olarak. Turkish ihtiyar primarily means simply “an elderly/old person” in everyday usage, risking a bare age-reference reading rather than a recognized church-office term. Must NOT be rendered şeyh (which carries strong Sufi-tradition spiritual-master/master-disciple connotations, parallel to the Galatians package’s caution against a mürşid-mürit reading of the Law’s guardian role). Mandatory theologian review; first-use qualification recommended (e.g., “cemaat önderleri olan ihtiyarlar” or similar clarifying gloss). |
| ποιμάνατε τὸ ἐν ὑμῖν ποίμνιον τοῦ θεοῦ poimanate to en hymin poimnion tou theou shepherd the flock of God that is among you | Reuses ποιμήν root established at 2:25 ”shepherd the flock of God that is among you” | Direct application of Christ’s own shepherd-role (2:25) to human elders — a derivative, not competing, authority. | HIGH RISK. “Aranızdaki Tanrı’nın sürüsünü güdün.” Reuse Çoban-family vocabulary established at 2:25 for consistency; flag the derivative nature of this human shepherding (under, not replacing, Christ’s own shepherd-role) for teaching material. |
| ἐπισκοποῦντες episkopountes (pres. ptc. of ἐπισκοπέω) exercising oversight | Reuses ἐπίσκοπος root from 2:12, 2:25 ”exercising oversight” | The active, ongoing exercise of the overseer function named at 2:25. | Gözeterek / gözetim yaparak. Reuse gözetmen-family vocabulary established at 2:25; low-medium risk. |
| μὴ ἀναγκαστῶς ἀλλὰ ἑκουσίως, μηδὲ αἰσχροκερδῶς ἀλλὰ προθύμως mē anagkastōs alla hekousiōs, mēde aischrokerdōs alla prothymōs not by compulsion but willingly, not for shameful gain but eagerly | Two paired contrasts defining godly, servant-hearted eldership ”not under compulsion but willingly, not for shameful gain but eagerly” | Positive/negative contrast pairs establishing the character standard for elders — directly relevant to guarding against clergy financial exploitation, a live pastoral concern in any context including contemporary Turkish church life. | Zorla değil, isteyerek; haksız kazanç için değil, gönülden. Medium risk; low doctrinal collision but high pastoral-practice relevance — native speaker review recommended for register. |
| μηδ’ ὡς κατακυριεύοντες τῶν κλήρων ἀλλὰ τύποι γινόμενοι τοῦ ποιμνίου mēd’ hōs katakyrieuontes tōn klērōn alla typoi ginomenoi tou poimniou not domineering over those in your charge, but becoming examples to the flock | κατακυριεύω = to lord it over, exercise domineering control (same verb-family flagged as forbidden leadership-style in Matthew 20:25-28 and Mark 10:42-45) “not domineering over those in your charge but being examples to the flock” | Direct contrast with the domineering-leadership pattern Christ himself rejected (cf. baseline’s servant_of_all doctrine, Mark 9:35; 10:43-45) — elders lead by example, not coercive control. | HIGH RISK. “Size emanet edilenlere egemenlik taslamadan, sürüye örnek olarak.” Cross-reference the Mark package’s servant_of_all doctrine (herkesin sonuncusu ve hizmetkarı) explicitly in teaching material — this verse applies that same servant-leadership pattern specifically to the eldership office. |
| φανερωθέντος τοῦ ἀρχιποίμενος… τὸν ἀμαράντινον τῆς δόξης στέφανον phanerōthentos tou archipoimenos… ton amarantinon tēs doxas stephanon when the chief Shepherd appears… the unfading crown of glory | ἀρχιποίμην = chief/head Shepherd (a title unique to this verse in the NT), compound of ἀρχι- (chief) + ποιμήν (shepherd); ἀμαράντινος reuses the ἀμάραντος root from 1:4 ”when the chief Shepherd appears… the unfading crown of glory” | Christ as ultimate Shepherd over the human “shepherds” (elders); the reward for faithful eldership is explicitly non-monetary, contrasting with the “shameful gain” warning just given. | NEW TERM, cross-reference 1:4. “Baş Çoban ortaya çıktığında… solmayan yücelik tacı.” Reuse Çoban and ἀμάραντος/solmaz vocabulary established at 1:4 exactly, plus baseline Yücelik. Medium-High risk; the crown-of-glory/inheritance bracket spanning 1:4 and 5:4 should be flagged for cross-chapter consistency in Phase 2. |
| νεώτεροι, ὑποτάγητε πρεσβυτέροις neōteroi, hypotagēte presbyterois younger [ones], submit to elders | Reuses the ὑποτάσσω verb-family (2:13, 18; 3:1) “you who are younger, be subject to the elders” | A fourth distinct sphere of the letter’s submission doctrine (civil authority, masters, spouses, and now age/office-based church submission). | CRITICAL — cross-reference all prior submission uses. “Gençler, ihtiyarlara bağımlı olun.” Flag for the same “which sphere, which nuance” teaching discipline applied to the other three ὑποτάσσω occurrences; must not be taught as identical in scope or force to the civil-authority or marriage submissions without differentiation. |
| πάντες δὲ ἀλλήλοις τὴν ταπεινοφροσύνην ἐγκομβώσασθε pantes de allēlois tēn tapeinophrosynēn egkombōsasthe all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another | ἐγκομβόομαι = to tie/fasten on oneself, a garment-image (possibly evoking a servant’s apron); ταπεινοφροσύνη = humility, reuses the root from 3:8 ”clothe yourselves with humility toward one another” | The doctrine’s namesake exhortation: humility as a garment mutually worn by the whole community, not merely a quality expected of subordinates toward superiors. | HIGH RISK. “Hepiniz birbirinize karşı alçakgönüllülüğü giyinin.” Reuse alçakgönüllü-family vocabulary established at 3:8; retain the garment-image (giyinin, “put on/wear”) if natural in Turkish, rather than a flattened abstract “humble olun,” to preserve the concrete clothing-metaphor. |
| ὁ θεὸς ὑπερηφάνοις ἀντιτάσσεται, ταπεινοῖς δὲ δίδωσιν χάριν ho theos hyperēphanois antitassetai, tapeinois de didōsin charin God opposes/sets himself against the proud, but gives grace to the humble | Citing Proverbs 3:34 (also cited at James 4:6); reuses baseline Lütuf ”God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” | Grounds the humility exhortation theologically: grace flows specifically to the humble, a direct application of the letter’s grace-vocabulary. | Tanrı gururlulara karşıdır, alçakgönüllülere lütuf verir. Reuse Lütuf baseline exactly. |
5:6–11 — Humility before God; resisting the devil
| Terms | Variants | Contextual theological meaning | Turkish rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| ταπεινώθητε… ὑπὸ τὴν κραταιὰν χεῖρα τοῦ θεοῦ tapeinōthēte… hypo tēn krataian cheira tou theou humble yourselves… under the mighty hand of God | OT idiom for God’s powerful action (e.g., Exodus 3:19-20) “humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God” | Continues the humility theme, now directed Godward rather than only toward fellow believers. | Tanrı’nın kudretli eli altında alçakgönüllü olun. Low-Medium risk; note “kudretli” (mighty) here is a straightforward power-descriptor of God’s hand, distinct from the baseline’s caution against kudret specifically in fatalistic/qadar-adjacent devotional contexts — here it is a concrete OT-idiom image, not a providence/election statement, so the baseline caution does not directly apply, but flag for reviewer awareness. |
| πᾶσαν τὴν μέριμναν ὑμῶν ἐπιρίψαντες ἐπ’ αὐτόν pasan tēn merimnan hymōn epiripsantes ep’ auton having cast/thrown all your anxiety upon him | ἐπιρίπτω = to throw/cast upon ”casting all your anxieties on him” | Practical, relational trust — casting care onto a personal, attentive God, not resignation to an impersonal fate. | NEW TERM. “Bütün kaygılarınızı O’nun üzerine atarak / bırakarak.” Medium risk; teaching note should reinforce the personal, relational nature of this trust, distinguishing it from a fatalistic “her şey nasılsa öyle olacak” (whatever happens, happens) resignation. |
| ὁ ἀντίδικος ὑμῶν διάβολος ὡς λέων ὠρυόμενος περιπατεῖ ζητῶν καταπιεῖν ho antidikos hymōn diabolos hōs leōn ōryomenos peripatei zētōn katapiein your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walks about seeking to devour | διάβολος = “slanderer/accuser” (the standard NT term for Satan) “your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” | Vivid personal, active-agency depiction of a real spiritual adversary — not a symbol for impersonal misfortune. | NEW TERM — establish for this curriculum. “Düşmanınız İblis, kükreyen bir aslan gibi, yutacak birini arayarak dolaşıyor.” Use İblis as the primary established Turkish Bible term for διάβολος (rather than the more folk-Islamic-inflected Şeytan, though the two are near-synonymous in general usage); note the resonance with, but distinctness from, Islamic cin/şeytan cosmology already flagged in the Ephesians package’s Armor of God entry — do not conflate the systems, but the resonance is a genuine teaching asset. Medium-High risk; theologian review recommended given the personal-adversary framing’s importance. |
| στερεοὶ τῇ πίστει stereoi tē pistei firm/steadfast in the faith | Reuses baseline İman ”firm in your faith” | Resistance to the adversary through steadfast faith, not ritual or magical counter-measures. | İmanda sağlam durarak. Reuse İman baseline exactly. |
| ὁ θεὸς πάσης χάριτος, ὁ καλέσας ὑμᾶς εἰς τὴν αἰώνιον αὐτοῦ δόξαν ἐν Χριστῷ ho theos pasēs charitos, ho kalesas hymas eis tēn aiōnion autou doxan en Christō the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ | Reuses baseline Lütuf, Çağrılmış/Çağrı, and Yücelik ”the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ” | Closing benedictory summary tying together the letter’s grace, calling, and glory vocabulary. | Bütün lütfun kaynağı olan Tanrı, sizi Mesih’te kendi sonsuz yüceliğine çağırmış olan. Reuse Lütuf, Çağrılmış/Çağrı, and Yücelik baseline exactly. |
5:12–14 — Closing greetings
| Terms | Variants | Contextual theological meaning | Turkish rendering / risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| ταύτην εἶναι ἀληθῆ χάριν τοῦ θεοῦ tautēn einai alēthē charin tou theou that this is the true grace of God | Parallels the Galatians package’s truth_of_the_gospel (Müjdenin gerçeği) construction ”testifying that this is the true grace of God” | Peter’s own attestation to the authenticity of the letter’s content, structurally parallel to Galatians’ insistence on the objective “truth of the gospel.” | HIGH RISK. “Bunun Tanrı’nın gerçek lütfu olduğuna şahitlik ediyorum.” Reuse Lütuf baseline exactly; construct in parallel with the established Müjdenin gerçeği pattern for consistency. |
| ἡ ἐν Βαβυλῶνι hē en Babylōni she who is in Babylon | Likely a coded reference to Rome (as in Revelation), not literal Mesopotamian Babylon ”she who is in Babylon” | Symbolic-code identification of the church’s location; requires a brief historical/literary note. | Babil’deki [kilise/topluluk]. Low-Medium risk; brief teaching note recommended clarifying the likely Rome-as-Babylon code, given readers’ low OT/intertestamental literacy. |
| ἀσπάσασθε ἀλλήλους ἐν φιλήματι ἀγάπης aspasasthe allēlous en philēmati agapēs greet one another with a kiss of love | First-century Mediterranean greeting custom ”greet one another with the kiss of love” | Cultural greeting practice, not a doctrinally load-bearing term; note only. | Birbirinizi sevgi öpücüğüyle selamlayın. Low risk; note the cultural-distance gap for a contemporary Turkish reader (this greeting custom is not a live social norm) but no substitution needed — render literally with a brief cultural note if desired. |
| εἰρήνη ὑμῖν πᾶσιν τοῖς ἐν Χριστῷ eirēnē hymin pasin tois en Christō peace to all of you who are in Christ | Reuses baseline Esenlik ”peace to all of you who are in Christ” | Closing benediction. | Mesih’te olan hepinize esenlik olsun. Reuse Esenlik baseline exactly. |
