Core Glossary
Core Glossary: 1 Peter (English–Greek–Turkish)
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing theological term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, covering the whole book of 1 Peter (chapters 1–5), organized by doctrine. Terms already present in the baseline Romans-curriculum translation_memory.json are marked [BASELINE — REUSE EXACTLY] and must never be re-derived or substituted. New terms proposed for this curriculum are marked [NEW] and require theologian review before being added to translation memory in Phase 2.
Risk tiers follow the baseline definitions:
- Critical — mistranslation destroys essential doctrine; mandatory theologian review, every occurrence.
- High — mistranslation creates significant theological confusion/syncretism risk; mandatory theologian review.
- Medium — mistranslation reduces clarity but preserves core meaning; native speaker review recommended.
- Low — minor imprecision risk; automated review sufficient.

This glossary must be loaded alongside the baseline translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json before any Phase 2 segment translation of 1 Peter begins. Critical Risk Terms
God
Approved rendering: Tanrı
Transliteration: tahn-RUH
Doctrine: God
Rejected alternatives: Allah (theologically usable but politically/socially contested for Christian texts in some contexts)
Original: θεός
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package baseline (v9), unchanged. 1 Peter’s opening doxology (1:3) pairs Tanrı with Baba; retains the baseline’s established convention throughout the letter.
Jesus
Approved rendering: İsa
Transliteration: ee-SAH
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: bare İsa Peygamber (Prophet Jesus, without Mesih)
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package baseline, unchanged. 1 Peter never uses İsa without Mesih in doctrinally weighted references (1:1, 3, 7; 3:21); this discipline must be maintained throughout.
Messiah
Approved rendering: Mesih
Transliteration: meh-SEEH
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Rejected alternatives: sadece bir peygamber (merely a prophet)
Inherited from Romans package baseline, unchanged. 1 Peter’s dominant Christological title; central to the letter’s suffering-then-glory pattern (1:11) and substitutionary suffering (2:21; 3:18).
Lord
Approved rendering: Rab
Transliteration: RAHB
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: efendi (master, non-divine), üstat (teacher/master)
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package baseline, unchanged. 1 Peter 3:15 directly substitutes ‘Christ’ for the OT text’s ‘the LORD’ (Isaiah 8:13), applying an explicit YHWH-text to Jesus — a significant, easily-overlooked deity-of-Christ data point requiring a mandatory teaching note wherever this verse is taught.
Father
Approved rendering: Baba
Transliteration: bah-BAH
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: Yaratıcı (Creator, as a substitute to avoid relational language)
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package baseline, unchanged. Used in 1 Peter’s opening doxology (1:3) and impartial-judge warning (1:17); retains the baseline’s tawhid tension around calling God ‘Father.’ Note: ‘Güvenilir Yaratıcı’ (faithful Creator, 4:19) is a legitimate independent Creator-title use, not an avoidance-substitute for Baba, and does not conflict with this caution.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: Kutsal Ruh
Transliteration: koot-SAHL ROOH
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: Cebrail (the archangel Gabriel)
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package baseline, unchanged. Active in OT prophetic inspiration (1:11), sanctifying believers (1:2), and, in a genuinely disputed clause, possibly Christ’s own resurrection state (3:18) — that disputed clause must be flagged, never adjudicated, in translated text.
Righteousness
Approved rendering: Doğruluk
Transliteration: doh-roo-LOOK
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: salih amel (righteous deeds), adalet (justice, generic)
Original: δικαιοσύνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package baseline, unchanged. 1 Peter applies this both to Christ’s own character (3:18, ‘the righteous for the unrighteous’) and believers’ suffering-inducing conduct (2:24; 3:14; 4:18). CRITICAL: 3:14’s ‘suffer for righteousness’ sake’ must read as suffering that RESULTS from an already-possessed righteous standing, never a means of acquiring it.
Salvation
Approved rendering: Kurtuluş
Transliteration: koor-too-LOOSH
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: cennete girmek (entering paradise, as the whole content), necat (Ottoman/Arabic register)
Original: σωτηρία
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package baseline, unchanged. 1 Peter emphatically presents salvation as already ‘ready to be revealed’ (1:5), guarded by God’s power (1:5) and received now, not deferred to an undetermined Judgment-Day outcome (1:9-10; 2:2).
Resurrection
Approved rendering: Diriliş
Transliteration: dee-ree-LEESH
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Rejected alternatives: göğe yükseliş (ascension, alone), ruhsal diriliş (spiritual-only revival)
Original: ἀνάστασις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package baseline, unchanged. The historical, bodily rising of Jesus Christ from real death is the ground of the ‘living hope’ opening the letter (1:3) and of baptism’s typological meaning (3:21). Presupposes a real, historical death; never permit a no-death-ascension reading, per Qur’an 4:157.
Freedom In Christ
Approved rendering: Özgürlük
Transliteration: urz-goor-LOOK
Doctrine: Freedom in Christ
Rejected alternatives: kulluktan kurtulmak (freedom FROM being God’s servant, wrong valence), din ve vicdan özgürlüğü alone (flattened to a secular civil-rights category)
Inherited from Galatians package baseline (its Torah-justification application). See the new ‘freedom’ entry below documenting 1 Peter 2:16’s DIFFERENT application (civil-submission, not Torah-justification) of this same standing Critical-tier term — the two applications must never be conflated in teaching material.
Blessed
Approved rendering: Ne mutlu
Transliteration: neh moot-LOO
Doctrine: The Beatitudes and Kingdom Values
Original: μακάριος
Category: Ethics
Inherited from Matthew package baseline, unchanged. 1 Peter 3:14 and 4:14 directly echo the Beatitudes, pronouncing this over those reproached for Christ’s name.
Servant Of All
Approved rendering: herkesin sonuncusu ve hizmetkarı
Transliteration: hehr-keh-SEEN soh-noon-joo-SOO veh heez-meht-kah-RUH
Doctrine: Servanthood as Greatness
Inherited from Mark package baseline, unchanged. 1 Peter 5:3 (‘not domineering… but becoming examples to the flock’) directly applies this same Christ-modeled servant-leadership pattern to the eldership office; see also ‘servant_leadership’ below for the 5:3-specific compound rendering.
Submission
Approved rendering: birbirinize bağımlı olun / eşinize bağımlı olun
Transliteration: beer-bee-ree-nee-ZEH bah-uhm-LUH oh-LOON / eh-shee-nee-ZEH bah-uhm-LUH oh-LOON
Doctrine: Household Code: Marriage as Christ and the Church
Rejected alternatives: itaat edin (stronger obedience sense, loses the mutuality frame)
Inherited from Ephesians package baseline, unchanged. 1 Peter uses the same ὑποτάσσω verb-family across FOUR distinct spheres (2:13 civil authority; 2:18 masters; 3:1 marriage; 5:5 elders) — each requires its own sphere-specific entry below and must never be taught as one undifferentiated command.
Lamb Of God
Approved rendering: İşte, dünyanın günahını ortadan kaldıran Tanrı Kuzusu!
Transliteration: eesh-TEH, dyoon-yah-NUHN goo-nah-huh-NUH ohr-tah-DAHN kahl-duh-RAHN tahn-RUH koo-zoo-SOO
Doctrine: The Lamb of God
Inherited from John package baseline. 1 Peter 1:19’s ‘lamb without blemish and without spot’ reuses this Kuzu vocabulary and Passover/Isaiah 53 typology; see ‘lamb_without_blemish’ below for the book-specific construction.
Curse Of The Law
Approved rendering: Kutsal Yasa’nın laneti
Transliteration: koot-SAHL yah-SAH-nuhn lah-neh-TEE
Doctrine: The Law’s Purpose
Rejected alternatives: büyü/nazar-transferable curse framing
Inherited from Galatians package baseline. 1 Peter 2:24’s ‘bore our sins… on the tree’ directly echoes this doctrine’s judicial-curse-substitution discipline (Deuteronomy 21:23; Galatians 3:13-10); never curse-magic absorption, never a transferable folk-curse (lanet in its popular sense).
Atonement Curse Bearing
Approved rendering: Kendini feda etti
Transliteration: ken-dee-NEE feh-DAH et-TEE
Doctrine: Atonement and Christ’s Curse-Bearing
Rejected alternatives: kurban etti (offered as a Kurban-Bayramı-style sacrifice TO God, direction reversed)
Inherited from Galatians package baseline. Related but distinct emphasis from 1 Peter’s ‘Christ suffered for you’ (christ_suffered_for_you, below): there, Christ’s own SUFFERING itself is the substitutionary act, not only his self-giving. Both terms must be taught together in this book.
Highly Exalted
Approved rendering: en yüce yere çıkardı
Transliteration: ehn yoo-JEH yeh-REH chuh-kahr-DUH
Doctrine: The Exaltation and Universal Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: yükseltti (too weak, loses the intensified compound sense)
Inherited from Philippians package baseline. 1 Peter 3:22’s Christ ‘at God’s right hand… angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him’ reuses this exaltation-vocabulary discipline; see angels_authorities_powers_subjected below.
Universal Lordship Confession
Approved rendering: her diz çökecek… İsa Mesih Rab’dir
Transliteration: hehr deez chur-keh-JEHK… ee-SAH meh-SEEH rahb-DEER
Doctrine: The Exaltation and Universal Lordship of Christ
Inherited from Philippians package baseline. Cross-referenced in teaching material for 1 Peter 3:22 and 3:15’s ‘sanctify Christ as Lord’; must match the established Rab rendering exactly.
Armor Of God
Approved rendering: Tanrı’nın bütün silahları / zırhı
Transliteration: tahn-RUH-nuhn byoo-TYOON see-lah-lah-RUH / zuhr-HUH
Doctrine: The Armor of God
Inherited from Ephesians package baseline. Its ‘principalities and powers’ (real apocalyptic cosmology, resonance-without-conflation with Islamic cin/şeytan vocabulary) convention is reused for 1 Peter 3:22’s ‘angels, authorities, and powers’ and 5:8’s ‘adversary the devil.‘
Born From Above
Approved rendering: yeniden doğmadıkça
Transliteration: yeh-nee-DEHN doh-mah-duhk-CHAH
Doctrine: New Birth / Born from Above
Inherited from John package baseline. Parallels 1 Peter’s ἀναγεννάω (regeneration) vocabulary at 1:3, 23; both must keep God as the causative agent, never a reflexive self-renewal resembling tövbe.
Regeneration New Birth
Approved rendering: yeniden doğurmak (Tanrı özne olarak)
Transliteration: yeh-nee-DEHN doh-oor-MAHK
Doctrine: The Living Hope of the Resurrection
Rejected alternatives: yeniden doğmak (reflexive; shifts agency to the believer), tövbe (Islamic self-initiated repentance/turning)
Original: ἀναγεννάω
Category: Salvation
NEW. 1 Peter 1:3, 23. God is the grammatical and theological subject — never a reflexive ‘we were reborn.’ Parallels the John-package born_of_god/born_from_above doctrine. Mandatory theologian review, every occurrence.
Spirit Of Christ In Prophets
Approved rendering: içlerinde bulunan Mesih’in Ruhu
Transliteration: eech-leh-reen-DEH boo-loo-NAHN meh-SEE-heen roo-HOO
Doctrine: The Pre-Existence of Christ in Old Testament Prophecy
Original: τὸ ἐν αὐτοῖς πνεῦμα Χριστοῦ
Category: Christology
NEW. 1 Peter 1:11. A strong pre-existence-of-Christ claim embedded in an OT-prophecy statement; reinforces the pipeline’s established Colossians/Philippians pre-existence doctrine. Mandatory theologian review.
Suffer Unjustly
Approved rendering: haksız yere acı çekmek
Transliteration: hahk-SUHZ yeh-REH ah-JUH chek-MEK
Doctrine: Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake
Rejected alternatives: eziyet çekmek, sıkıntı çekmek, zulüm görmek (near-synonyms that would obscure the letter’s 12-occurrence structural repetition)
Original: πάσχω
Category: Ethics
NEW. The letter’s dominant verb (πάσχω, 12 occurrences: 2:19-21, 23; 3:14, 17-18; 4:1, 15, 19; 5:1, 10). Fix a single rendering across ALL occurrences without stylistic variation; consistency is itself doctrinally load-bearing.
Suffer For Righteousness Sake
Approved rendering: doğruluk için acı çekmek
Transliteration: doh-roo-LOOK ee-CHEEN ah-JUH chek-MEK
Doctrine: Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake
Rejected alternatives: a rendering implying suffering earns Doğruluk
Original: πάσχειν διὰ δικαιοσύνην
Category: Salvation
NEW. Doctrine’s namesake phrase, 1 Peter 3:14. Reuse baseline Doğruluk exactly. Suffering is a CONSEQUENCE of an already-possessed righteous standing, never a MEANS of acquiring it — direct application of the baseline’s salih amel caution.
Sanctify Christ As Lord
Approved rendering: Mesih’i Rab olarak kutsayın
Transliteration: meh-SEE-hee rahb oh-lah-RAHK koot-sah-YUHN
Doctrine: Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake
Original: κύριον τὸν Χριστὸν ἁγιάσατε
Category: Christology
NEW. 1 Peter 3:15. Direct application of an Isaiah 8:13 OT-YHWH text to Christ. Reuse baseline Rab exactly. Mandatory teaching note on the OT substitution as a deity-of-Christ data point.
Holy Priesthood
Approved rendering: kutsal kâhinler topluluğu
Transliteration: koot-SAHL kyah-heen-LEHR toh-ploo-loo-OO
Doctrine: The Church as a Holy and Royal Priesthood
Rejected alternatives: kahin (soothsayer/fortune-teller — explicit homograph collision), papaz (parish-priest register), rahip (monk/clergy register)
Original: ἱεράτευμα ἅγιον
Category: Church
NEW — HOMOGRAPH RISK, highest severity in this book. 1 Peter 2:5. Kâhin (priest) is visually/phonetically adjacent to kahin (soothsayer), explicitly rejected elsewhere in the baseline’s prophet entry for exactly this reason. Mandatory first-use disambiguating note EVERY occurrence, no exception — treat with at least the procedural weight of the Galatians package’s Sünnet/Sünnet caution.
Royal Priesthood
Approved rendering: kraliyet kâhinliği
Transliteration: krah-lee-YET kyah-heen-lee-EE
Doctrine: The Church as a Holy and Royal Priesthood
Rejected alternatives: kral soyundan kâhinler topluluğu (viable alternate phrasing, logged as alternatives_considered)
Original: βασίλειον ἱεράτευμα
Category: Church
NEW — HOMOGRAPH RISK. 1 Peter 2:9, citing Exodus 19:6. Compounds the kâhin/kahin risk with a secondary risk: ‘royal’ read as a political-monarchy claim in Turkey’s secular-republic context. Brief non-political clarifying note required.
Submit To Human Institutions
Approved rendering: her insani yönetime/otoriteye bağımlı olun
Transliteration: hehr een-sah-NEE yur-neh-tee-MEH bah-uhm-LUH oh-LOON
Doctrine: Submission to Authority and Christlike Endurance
Original: ὑποτάγητε πάσῃ ἀνθρωπίνῃ κτίσει
Category: Household Code
NEW. 1 Peter 2:13. Never license coercive/unconditional state authority; the command is itself bounded ‘for the Lord’s sake’ and immediately relativized by the fear-God/honor-king distinction (2:17). Mandatory theologian review.
Wives Submit To Husbands
Approved rendering: eşinize bağımlı olun
Transliteration: eh-shee-nee-ZEH bah-uhm-LUH oh-LOON
Doctrine: Household Code: Wives, Husbands, and Christ’s Example
Original: γυναῖκες ὑποτασσόμεναι τοῖς ἀνδράσιν
Category: Household Code
NEW book-specific application reusing the Ephesians 5:22-24 convention exactly. 1 Peter 3:1. Requires the identical mandatory theologian AND native-speaker review triggered by Ephesians, given Turkey’s 1926 Medeni Kanun and ongoing family-law debate. Must not be taught apart from 3:7’s parallel instruction to husbands.
Younger Submit To Elders
Approved rendering: gençler, ihtiyarlara bağımlı olun
Transliteration: gench-LEHR, ee-htee-yahr-lah-RAH bah-uhm-LUH oh-LOON
Doctrine: Elders and Humility
Original: νεώτεροι ὑποτάγητε πρεσβυτέροις
Category: Household Code
NEW. 1 Peter 5:5. A fourth distinct submission-sphere; must not be taught as identical in scope or force to the civil-authority, master, or marriage submissions without differentiation.
Christ Suffered For You
Approved rendering: Mesih sizin için acı çekti
Transliteration: meh-SEEH see-ZEEN ee-CHEEN ah-JUH chek-TEE
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering
Original: Χριστὸς ἔπαθεν ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν
Category: Salvation
NEW. 1 Peter 2:21. Distinct from but complementary to the Galatians package’s ‘Kendini feda etti’ self-giving language: here Christ’s own SUFFERING itself, not only his self-giving, is the substitutionary act. Mandatory theologian review.
Cross Tree
Approved rendering: çarmıh (ağaç)
Transliteration: char-MUH (ah-AHCH)
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering
Original: ξύλον / σταυρός
Category: Salvation
NEW book-specific emphasis on baseline Çarmıh. 1 Peter 2:24 explicitly echoes Deuteronomy 21:23 and Galatians 3:13’s tree-curse doctrine — render consistently with that discipline: judicial substitution only, never curse-magic absorption.
Bore Our Sins On The Tree
Approved rendering: günahlarımızı kendi bedeninde çarmıha (ağaca) taşıdı
Transliteration: goo-nah-lah-ruh-muh-ZUH ken-DEE beh-deh-neen-DEH char-muh-HAH tah-SHUH-duh
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering
Original: τὰς ἁμαρτίας ἡμῶν ἀνήνεγκεν ἐπὶ τὸ ξύλον
Category: Salvation
NEW. 1 Peter 2:24. Direct echo of Deuteronomy 21:23 and Galatians 3:13. Mandatory theologian review, every occurrence.
Christ Suffered Once For Sins
Approved rendering: Mesih bir defaya mahsus olmak üzere doğru biri olarak doğru olmayanlar için acı çekti
Transliteration: meh-SEEH beer deh-fah-YAH mahh-SOOS ohl-MAHK yoo-zeh-REH
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering
Rejected alternatives: bir kez (weaker, can imply ‘on one occasion’ rather than a permanent non-repeatable event)
Original: Χριστὸς ἅπαξ περὶ ἁμαρτιῶν ἔπαθεν, δίκαιος ὑπὲρ ἀδίκων
Category: Salvation
NEW. 1 Peter 3:18. ἅπαξ (‘once for all’) must not be softened; prefer ‘bir defaya mahsus olmak üzere’ over the weaker ‘bir kez.‘
Put To Death In Flesh Alive In Spirit
Approved rendering: bedence öldürüldü, ruhça diriltildi
Transliteration: beh-den-JEH url-doo-ROOL-doo, rooh-CHAH dee-reel-teel-DEE
Doctrine: Christ’s Proclamation to the Spirits (1 Peter 3:18-22)
Rejected alternatives: any rendering that resolves the disputed referent of πνεῦμα
Original: θανατωθεὶς σαρκί, ζωοποιηθεὶς πνεύματι
Category: Christology
NEW — FLAG, DO NOT ADJUDICATE. 1 Peter 3:18. Genuinely contested clause; render literally, mandatory theologian review, never resolve the exegetical debate in translated text (parallel to Mark 13:32, John 7:53-8:11).
Proclaimed To Spirits In Prison
Approved rendering: hapisteki ruhlara vaaz verdi/ilan etti
Transliteration: hah-pees-teh-KEE rooh-lah-RAH vah-AHZ ver-DEE / ee-LAHN et-TEE
Doctrine: Christ’s Proclamation to the Spirits (1 Peter 3:18-22)
Rejected alternatives: any rendering that resolves the identity, timing, or content of the proclamation
Original: τοῖς ἐν φυλακῇ πνεύμασιν πορευθεὶς ἐκήρυξεν
Category: Doctrine
NEW — FLAG, DO NOT ADJUDICATE. 1 Peter 3:19. The letter’s most theologically disputed statement. Render literally; mandatory theologian review every occurrence; supply the range of standard interpretive positions only in surrounding teaching material.
Baptism Antitype Saves
Approved rendering: vaftiz de bunun karşılığıdır, şimdi sizi kurtarıyor
Transliteration: vahf-TEEZ deh boo-NOON kahr-shuh-luh-UH-duhr
Doctrine: Christ’s Proclamation to the Spirits (1 Peter 3:18-22)
Rejected alternatives: any rendering that adjudicates the baptismal-regeneration debate
Original: ὃ καὶ ὑμᾶς ἀντίτυπον νῦν σῴζει βάπτισμα
Category: Sacrament
NEW — FLAG, DO NOT ADJUDICATE. 1 Peter 3:21. Reuse baseline Vaftiz exactly. Render exactly, flag for mandatory theologian review, never resolve the underlying confessional debate in translated text.
Angels Authorities Powers Subjected
Approved rendering: melekler, yetkiler ve güçler O’na bağımlı kılınmış
Transliteration: meh-lek-LEHR, yet-kee-LEHR veh gooch-LEHR oh-NAH bah-uhm-LUH kuh-luhn-MUHSH
Doctrine: Christ’s Proclamation to the Spirits (1 Peter 3:18-22)
Original: ἀγγέλων καὶ ἐξουσιῶν καὶ δυνάμεων ὑποταγέντων
Category: Christology
NEW. 1 Peter 3:22. Reuse the Philippians highly_exalted/universal_lordship_confession and Ephesians armor_of_god ‘principalities and powers’ conventions exactly. Mandatory theologian review.
Gospel Preached To The Dead
Approved rendering: ölülere de Müjde bildirildi
Transliteration: ur-loo-leh-REH deh myooj-DEH beel-deer-EEL-dee
Doctrine: Christ’s Proclamation to the Spirits (1 Peter 3:18-22)
Rejected alternatives: any rendering that resolves the relationship between this clause and 3:19
Original: εὐηγγελίσθη καὶ νεκροῖς
Category: Salvation
NEW — FLAG, DO NOT ADJUDICATE. 1 Peter 4:6. Reuse baseline Müjde exactly; cross-reference 3:19 as a linked but separately-flagged exegetical question.
Be Holy
Approved rendering: Kutsal olun
Transliteration: koot-SAHL oh-LOON
Doctrine: Holiness in Conduct
Original: ἅγιοι γενήθητε
Category: Sanctification
NEW use of baseline Kutsal. 1 Peter 1:15-16, citing Leviticus 11:44-45; 19:2. Must retain the moral-relational, Spirit-enabled sense, never a ritual-purity (tahara-adjacent) reading. Mandatory theologian flag given the OT holiness-code citation.
Lamb Without Blemish
Approved rendering: kusursuz ve lekesiz bir kuzu
Transliteration: koo-soor-SOOZ veh leh-keh-SEEZ beer koo-ZOO
Doctrine: Redemption Through the Precious Blood of the Lamb
Original: ἀμνὸς ἄμωμος καὶ ἄσπιλος
Category: Salvation
NEW. 1 Peter 1:19. Reuse the John package’s Kuzu (Lamb of God) vocabulary exactly for thematic and doctrinal consistency. Mandatory theologian flag as an atonement-doctrine passage.
Elders
Approved rendering: ihtiyarlar
Transliteration: ee-htee-yahr-LAHR
Doctrine: Elders and Humility
Rejected alternatives: şeyh (imports Sufi-tradition master-disciple/mürşid-mürit hierarchy), önder (too generic, loses the specific NT office sense)
Original: πρεσβύτεροι / συμπρεσβύτερος
Category: Church
NEW — HOMOGRAPH-ADJACENT RISK. 1 Peter 5:1. Bare ihtiyar in everyday Turkish means simply ‘an elderly person,’ with no inherent office sense. Mandatory first-use clarifying gloss recommended (e.g., ‘cemaat önderleri olan ihtiyarlar’). NEVER şeyh. Mandatory theologian review.
Servant Leadership
Approved rendering: egemenlik taslamadan, örnek olarak
Transliteration: eh-geh-men-LEEK tahs-lah-mah-DAHN, ur-NEHK oh-lah-RAHK
Doctrine: Elders and Humility
Original: κατακυριεύω (negated) / τύπος
Category: Discipleship
NEW book-specific application of the Mark package’s servant_of_all doctrine (herkesin sonuncusu ve hizmetkarı). 1 Peter 5:3. Directly contrasts the domineering-leadership pattern Christ himself rejected.
Freedom
Approved rendering: Özgürlük
Transliteration: urz-goor-LOOK
Doctrine: Submission to Authority and Christlike Endurance
Original: ἐλευθερία
Category: Salvation
NEW book-specific application of the standing Critical-tier baseline Özgürlük term. 1 Peter 2:16 concerns freedom bounded against use as ‘a cover for evil’ in the civil-submission context — a DIFFERENT application from its Galatians 5:1 Torah-justification usage. Must be flagged as distinct to avoid conflating the two doctrines. Mandatory theologian review.
High Risk Terms
Grace
Approved rendering: Lütuf
Transliteration: lyoo-TOOF
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: rahmet, keramet, bağış
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package baseline, unchanged. 1 Peter’s own closing self-attestation calls the letter’s whole message ‘the true grace of God’ (5:12); grace also grounds humble service (4:10; 5:5, 10, 12). Never rahmet.
Faith
Approved rendering: İman
Transliteration: ee-MAHN
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: inanç (generic belief)
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package baseline, unchanged. Object (Christ) must remain explicit given İman’s shared root with the Islamic six-pillars sense of assent; tested and proven genuine through suffering (1:7).
Holy
Approved rendering: Kutsal
Transliteration: koot-SAHL
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: temiz (ritually clean), mübarek (blessed)
Original: ἅγιος
Category: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package baseline, unchanged. Commanded of believers by direct appeal to the OT holiness code (1:15-16, citing Leviticus 11:44-45; 19:2) and applied corporately to the church as a ‘holy priesthood’ and ‘holy nation’ (2:5, 9). Never ritual-purity (tahara/abdest-adjacent).
Sanctification
Approved rendering: Kutsallaşma
Transliteration: koot-sahl-lahsh-MAH
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: arınma (ritual purification)
Original: ἁγιασμός
Category: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package baseline, unchanged. Named in the letter’s opening greeting as one of three elements (foreknowledge, sanctification, obedience) constituting the readers’ identity (1:2).
Glory
Approved rendering: Yücelik
Transliteration: yoo-jeh-LEEK
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: nur (divine light, heavily loaded in Islamic and Sufi mysticism as Muhammad’s pre-existent light)
Original: δόξα
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package baseline, unchanged. 1 Peter applies this both to Christ’s own essential glory (1:11, 21; 4:11) and, derivatively, to believers’ future commendation (1:7; 5:1, 4, 10) — teaching material must distinguish the two senses.
Prophet
Approved rendering: Peygamber
Transliteration: pay-gahm-BEHR
Doctrine: Inspiration of Scripture
Rejected alternatives: kahin (soothsayer/fortune-teller)
Original: προφήτης
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package baseline (TM entry risk level, High). OT prophets are said to have searched out, moved by Christ’s own pre-incarnate Spirit, the grace and sufferings that would come to Christ (1:10-12) — retain the baseline caution that Peygamber is also Islam’s exclusive category for Isa himself; OT prophets’ pointing-forward role must stay distinct from Christ’s own greater, pre-existent identity.
Baptism
Approved rendering: Vaftiz
Transliteration: vahf-TEEZ
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles
Rejected alternatives: abdest-adjacent ritual-ablution vocabulary
Original: βάπτισμα
Category: Sacrament
Inherited from Romans package baseline. Elevated to High for this book: 1 Peter 3:21 is one of the most theologically dense and historically contested single verses in the letter (baptismal-regeneration debate). Render exactly and flag for mandatory theologian review without adjudicating the underlying confessional question.
Called
Approved rendering: Çağrılmış
Transliteration: chah-ruhl-MUSH
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Rejected alternatives: davet edilmiş (invited)
Inherited from Romans package baseline, unchanged. Used across 1 Peter’s several senses: calling to holiness (1:15), to endurance under unjust suffering following Christ’s example (2:21), to mutual blessing (3:9), and to eternal glory (5:10).
Calling
Approved rendering: Çağrı
Transliteration: chah-RUH
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Rejected alternatives: davet
Inherited from Romans package baseline, unchanged.
Election
Approved rendering: Tanrı’nın seçimi
Transliteration: tahn-RUH-nuhn seh-chee-MEE
Doctrine: Effectual Calling
Rejected alternatives: kader (fate/predestination in the qadar sense), kısmet
Inherited from Romans/Ephesians package baseline, unchanged. Believers are named God’s chosen sojourners, chosen ‘according to the foreknowledge of God the Father’ (1:1-2) and, corporately, a ‘chosen race’ (2:9). See also ‘election_and_foreknowledge’ below for the 1:1-2-specific compound.
Power Of God
Approved rendering: Tanrı’nın gücü
Transliteration: tahn-RUH-nuhn goo-JOO
Doctrine: Power of God for Salvation
Rejected alternatives: Tanrı’nın kudreti (used, but often paired with fatalistic qadar language)
Original: δύναμις θεοῦ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package baseline, unchanged. In 1 Peter 1:5, the power by which believers are actively guarded, as by a garrison, unto a salvation already prepared to be revealed.
Slavery
Approved rendering: Kölelik
Transliteration: kur-leh-LEEK
Doctrine: Freedom in Christ
Rejected alternatives: kul/kulluk (the positive Islamic servant-of-God self-designation)
Inherited from Galatians package baseline, unchanged. Reference term for the köle/kul distinction; not directly quoted in 1 Peter but underlies the household_servants entry below.
Idolatry
Approved rendering: Putperestlik
Transliteration: poot-peh-rest-LEEK
Doctrine: Flesh versus Spirit
Original: εἰδωλολατρία
Category: Sin
Inherited from Galatians package baseline, unchanged. Listed among the readers’ former pagan practices now to be put away (4:3).
Redemption
Approved rendering: Kurtarmak
Transliteration: koor-tahr-MAHK
Doctrine: Atonement and Christ’s Curse-Bearing
Original: λυτρόω
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Galatians package baseline, unchanged. Believers ‘ransomed’ from a futile, ancestrally-inherited way of life, not with perishable silver or gold but with Christ’s precious blood (1:18-19); an accomplished transaction, consistent with Kurtuluş.
Sin
Approved rendering: Günah
Transliteration: goo-NAH
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Rejected alternatives: hata (mistake/error), kusur (flaw/defect)
Inherited from Romans package baseline, unchanged. Present throughout 1 Peter: Christ ‘committed no sin’ (2:22), bore ‘our sins’ in his body on the tree (2:24), suffered once ‘for sins’ (3:18), believers have ‘ceased from sin’ (4:1), and love ‘covers a multitude of sins’ relationally within the church (4:8, see love_covers_sins below — distinct from Christ’s exclusive atoning work).
Obedience Of Faith
Approved rendering: İmanın getirdiği itaat
Transliteration: ee-mahn-UHN geh-teer-DEE-ee ee-tah-AHT
Doctrine: Obedience of Faith
Rejected alternatives: İslam’a (teslimiyet) benzer itaat (submission modeled on Islamic surrender)
Inherited from Romans package baseline, unchanged. Underlies the discipline applied to 1:2’s distinct ‘obedience to Jesus Christ’ phrase (see obedience_to_jesus_christ below): obedience flowing from a faith relationship already secured by grace, never a submission that itself earns standing.
Slaves And Masters
Approved rendering: köleler / efendiler
Transliteration: kur-leh-LEHR / eh-fehn-dee-LEHR
Doctrine: Household Code: Slaves and Masters
Inherited from Ephesians package baseline. See ‘household_servants’ below for 1 Peter 2:18’s specific οἰκέται (household servants) application, which reuses this exact rendering under the same mandatory historical-distancing discipline.
Born Of God
Approved rendering: Tanrı’dan doğmuşlardır
Transliteration: tahn-ruh-DAHN doh-moosh-lahr-DUHR
Doctrine: New Birth / Born from Above
Inherited from John package baseline. Directly parallels 1 Peter’s regeneration doctrine (1:3, 23); see regeneration_new_birth below for the book’s own primary term.
Living Hope
Approved rendering: diri (yaşayan) umut
Transliteration: dee-REE oo-MOOT
Doctrine: The Living Hope of the Resurrection
Rejected alternatives: bare umut/ümit without the diri/yaşayan qualifier
Original: ἐλπὶς ζῶσα
Category: Salvation
NEW. Core passage, 1 Peter 1:3. Turkish ‘umut’ in general and Islamic devotional register (‘Allah’ın rahmetinden ümit’) denotes an unresolved, outcome-pending hope; must be taught explicitly as already-secured certainty, tying to the baseline’s Critical assurance_of_salvation doctrine. Register-drift risk requires ongoing Phase 2 quality-control monitoring, not only a one-time decision.
Inheritance
Approved rendering: miras
Transliteration: mee-RAHS
Doctrine: The Living Hope of the Resurrection
Original: κληρονομία
Category: Salvation
NEW. 1 Peter 1:4. Guaranteed, already-secured possession; contrasts with the Islamic eschatological pattern in which Paradise-entry remains undecided until a deeds-weighing Judgment. Bind tightly to çürümez/lekesiz/solmaz and korunan (see below).
Kept Guarded Inheritance
Approved rendering: korunan / saklanan
Transliteration: koh-roo-NAHN / sahk-lah-NAHN
Doctrine: The Living Hope of the Resurrection
Rejected alternatives: an active-voice rendering implying the believer’s own safekeeping
Original: τηρέω (perf. pass. ptc.)
Category: Salvation
NEW. 1 Peter 1:4. Must render as passive — God, not the believer, guards the inheritance.
Trial Testing
Approved rendering: çeşit çeşit sınavlar / denemeler
Transliteration: cheh-SHEET cheh-SHEET suh-nahv-LAHR
Doctrine: The Living Hope of the Resurrection
Rejected alternatives: günaha sürükleyici ayartmalar (moral temptations toward sin)
Original: πειρασμός
Category: Salvation
NEW. 1 Peter 1:6. Must NOT render with ayartma (moral temptation), which would shift the doctrine from suffering-for-righteousness to an internal moral-enticement frame.
Tested Genuineness Of Faith
Approved rendering: imanın sınanmış değeri
Transliteration: ee-mah-NUHN suh-nahn-MUHSH deh-eh-REE
Doctrine: The Living Hope of the Resurrection
Rejected alternatives: a rendering implying merit accumulated through suffering
Original: δοκίμιον τῆς πίστεως
Category: Salvation
NEW. 1 Peter 1:7. Must be taught alongside 1:5’s already-secured salvation so this is never misread as an amel-adjacent merit-generating reading.
Salvation Of Souls
Approved rendering: canların kurtuluşu
Transliteration: jahn-lah-RUHN koor-too-loo-SHOO
Doctrine: The Living Hope of the Resurrection
Rejected alternatives: ruhların kurtuluşu (risks conflating psychē with Kutsal Ruh vocabulary)
Original: σωτηρία ψυχῶν
Category: Salvation
NEW. 1 Peter 1:9. Reuse Kurtuluş; render ψυχή as can (whole-person life), not narrowly as ruh.
Sufferings And Glories
Approved rendering: acılar… yücelikler
Transliteration: ah-jeh-LAHR… yoo-jeh-leek-LEHR
Doctrine: The Pre-Existence of Christ in Old Testament Prophecy
Original: παθήματα… δόξαι
Category: Christology
NEW. 1 Peter 1:11. Introduces the suffering-then-glory pattern structuring the whole letter (3:18-22; 4:13; 5:1, 10). Reuse Yücelik.
Reasoned Defense
Approved rendering: umudun nedenini açıklama
Transliteration: oo-moo-DOON neh-deh-nee-NEE ah-chuk-lah-MAH
Doctrine: Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake
Rejected alternatives: apoloji (false friend; modern Turkish ‘apology’ = expression of regret)
Original: ἀπολογία
Category: Evangelism
NEW. 1 Peter 3:15. Ties to the baseline Müjdeleme convention and its pastoral/legal-risk caution around evangelism passages in the Turkish context; flag for the same safety review.
Judgment Begins At Household Of God
Approved rendering: yargı Tanrı’nın evinden başlar
Transliteration: yahr-GUH tahn-ruh-NUHN eh-veen-DEHN bahsh-LAHR
Doctrine: Divine Judgment and Accountability Beginning with God’s Household
Original: ἄρχεται τὸ κρίμα ἀπὸ τοῦ οἴκου τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Eschatology
NEW. 1 Peter 4:17, echoing Ezekiel 9:6. Requires OT background note; must be taught alongside 1:5-9’s assurance passages so it functions as sober self-examination, not a retraction of secured salvation.

Approved rendering: Tanrı’dan korkun, krala saygı gösterin
Transliteration: tahn-ruh-DAHN kohr-KOON, krah-LAH sigh-GUH gur-steh-REEN

Rejected alternatives: a rendering collapsing korku and saygı into a single interchangeable verb
Original: τὸν θεὸν φοβεῖσθε, τὸν βασιλέα τιμᾶτε
Category: Household Code
NEW. 1 Peter 2:17. Theologically load-bearing distinction (reverential fear reserved for God alone, lesser honor for human authority) — must never be collapsed into one verb.
Household Servants
Approved rendering: köleler / efendiler
Transliteration: kur-leh-LEHR / eh-fehn-dee-LEHR
Doctrine: Submission to Authority and Christlike Endurance
Original: οἰκέται
Category: Household Code
NEW book-specific application of the Ephesians köleler/efendiler convention (there δοῦλοι/κύριοι; here οἰκέται, household servants). 1 Peter 2:18-20. Mandatory historical-distancing framing (first-century Greco-Roman household slavery, Ottoman Empire’s own abolished institution as relevant but non-equivalent background).

Doctrine: Household Code: Wives, Husbands, and Christ’s Example

Doctrine: Household Code: Wives, Husbands, and Christ’s Example
Original: ἀσθενέστερον σκεῦος
Category: Household Code
NEW. 1 Peter 3:7. Likely comparative physical/social vulnerability, not spiritual/moral inferiority; the same verse’s ‘joint heirs’ clause relativizes any hierarchical over-reading. Mandatory teaching note.

Approved rendering: O’nun yaraları sayesinde şifa buldunuz
Transliteration: oh-NOON yah-rah-lah-RUH sah-yeh-seen-DEH shee-FAH bool-doo-NOOZ

Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering
Original: ποιμὴν καὶ ἐπίσκοπος τῶν ψυχῶν

Not Removal Of Dirt But Appeal Of Conscience
Approved rendering: bedenin kirden temizlenmesi değil, Tanrı’ya karşı iyi bir vicdanın dilekçesi
Transliteration: beh-deh-NEEN keer-DEHN teh-meez-len-meh-SEE deh-EEL

Original: οὐ σαρκὸς ἀπόθεσις ῥύπου ἀλλὰ συνειδήσεως ἀγαθῆς ἐπερώτημα εἰς θεόν
Category: Sacrament
NEW. 1 Peter 3:21b. The passage’s own safeguard against a ritual-purification (abdest-adjacent) misreading of baptism; the full ‘not X but Y’ negation must never be abbreviated.
Conduct Way Of Life
Approved rendering: yaşayış
Transliteration: yah-shah-YUHSH
Doctrine: Holiness in Conduct
Rejected alternatives: davranış, hayat tarzı (viable but must not be interchanged, to preserve the term’s six-occurrence structural consistency)
Original: ἀναστροφή
Category: Sanctification
NEW, recurring. 1 Peter 1:15, 18; 2:12; 3:1, 2, 16. Fix a single rendering (yaşayış) across all six occurrences; consistency itself carries doctrinal weight for the letter’s coherence.
Futile Ancestral Way Of Life
Approved rendering: atalarınızdan kalan boş yaşayış
Transliteration: ah-tah-lah-ruh-nuhz-DAHN kah-LAHN bohsh yah-shah-YUHSH
Doctrine: Redemption Through the Precious Blood of the Lamb
Rejected alternatives: a rendering generalized into a blanket critique of Turkish-Islamic heritage
Original: πατροπαράδοτος ματαία ἀναστροφή
Category: Sanctification
NEW. 1 Peter 1:18. Must be bound explicitly to ‘sizin daha önceki yaşayışınız’ (the readers’ own specific pre-conversion practice), never a blanket critique of inherited Turkish-Islamic family or cultural tradition. Mandatory theologian review for framing.

Doctrine: Elders and Humility
Original: ποιμάνατε τὸ ἐν ὑμῖν ποίμνιον τοῦ θεοῦ

Chief Shepherd Unfading Crown
Approved rendering: Baş Çoban… solmayan yücelik tacı
Transliteration: bahsh choh-BAHN… sohl-mah-YAHN yoo-jeh-leek tah-JUH

Clothe With Humility
Approved rendering: alçakgönüllülüğü giyinin
Transliteration: ahl-chahk-gur-nyool-loo-LOO-yoo gee-yee-NEEN
Doctrine: Elders and Humility
Rejected alternatives: a periphrastic gloss that breaks apart the alçakgönüllü compound, risking a false-friend reading toward alçak alone (‘low, base, contemptible’)
Original: τὴν ταπεινοφροσύνην ἐγκομβώσασθε
Category: Ethics
NEW. Doctrine’s namesake exhortation, 1 Peter 5:5. Always use the fixed compound alçakgönüllülük; retain the garment-image (giyinin, ‘put on/wear’) where natural.

Rejected alternatives: unglossed folk Şeytan/cin vocabulary
Original: ὁ ἀντίδικος… διάβολος ὡς λέων ὠρυόμενος
Category: Doctrine
NEW. 1 Peter 5:8. Use İblis (more formally theological) rather than folk-Islamic-inflected Şeytan; note resonance with, but distinctness from, Islamic cin/şeytan cosmology already flagged in the Ephesians package’s Armor of God entry.
Obedience To Jesus Christ
Approved rendering: İsa Mesih’e itaat
Transliteration: ee-SAH meh-SEE-heh ee-tah-AHT
Doctrine: Election and Foreknowledge
Original: εἰς ὑπακοὴν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ
Category: Salvation
NEW. 1 Peter 1:2. Apply the same discipline as baseline obedience_of_faith: response to grace already given, never a submission that itself earns standing, guarding against collapse into islam-as-submission framing.
Election And Foreknowledge
Approved rendering: Tanrı’nın seçimi / önceden bilinme
Transliteration: tahn-ruh-NUHN seh-chee-MEE / urn-jeh-DEHN bee-leen-MEH
Doctrine: Election and Foreknowledge

Approved rendering: İmanın getirdiği itaat
Transliteration: ee-mahn-UHN geh-teer-DEE-ee ee-tah-AHT
Doctrine: Election and Foreknowledge
Cross-reference entry: see obedience_of_faith (inherited) and obedience_to_jesus_christ (new, 1:2-specific) above. Logged separately here only to make the 1 Peter cross-reference explicit in this file’s index.

Original: κληρονόμος / συγκληρονόμος

Cross
Approved rendering: Çarmıh
Transliteration: char-MUH
Doctrine: Crucified with Christ
Rejected alternatives: sürgü/haç (less standard for this context)
Inherited from Galatians package baseline. See also ‘cross_tree’ below for 1 Peter 2:24’s specific ‘bore our sins on the tree’ construction, which elevates the risk profile to Critical for this passage by directly echoing Galatians 3:13’s curse-bearing tree doctrine.
