Core Glossary
Core Glossary — 1 John | English → Assamese
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing term identified in analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md, drawn from every chapter of 1 John (1:1 through 5:21) and given full verse-by-verse treatment for the core passage (4:7–21). Terms already present in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json are marked Reused and MUST be rendered exactly as recorded there — no alternative renderings are permitted. Terms newly identified for the 1 John curriculum are marked New and are proposed here for adoption into an updated translation memory in a subsequent Phase 1 step.
Risk tiers follow the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json definitions: Critical (human theologian review, every occurrence), High (human theologian review), Medium (native speaker review), Low (automated review sufficient).

New terms marked “New” above require formal addition to an updated translation memory (with version increment) before Phase 2 translation begins, per the escalation procedure in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md.
Critical Risk Terms
God
Approved rendering: ঈশ্বৰ
Transliteration: Iswôr
Doctrine: God is Light and God is Love
Rejected alternatives: ভগৱান, পৰমেশ্বৰ
Original: θεός
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. ঈশ্বৰ is the standard Assamese Bible Society term for the one true God; never ভগৱান (devotional ista-devata address). In 1 John, the ultimate referent of the predicate statements ‘God is light’ (1:5) and ‘God is love’ (4:8).
Jesus
Approved rendering: যীচু
Transliteration: Yisu
Doctrine: The Incarnation and Antichrist; Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life
Rejected alternatives: ঈছা
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Never ঈছা (Assamese Muslim-context form). In 1 John, the referent of ‘Jesus Christ come in the flesh’ (4:2-3), the letter’s Christological test.
Father
Approved rendering: পিতা
Transliteration: pita
Doctrine: Fellowship with God and One Another
Rejected alternatives: ব্ৰহ্মা, সৃষ্টিকৰ্তা
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Avoid Hindu creator-deity names (ব্ৰহ্মা). In 1 John, the object of fellowship (1:3) and source of the believer’s granted ‘children of God’ status (3:1).
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: পবিত্ৰ আত্মা
Transliteration: pobitrô atma
Doctrine: Fellowship with God and One Another; Testing the Spirits (contrast term)
Rejected alternatives: ব্ৰহ্ম, পৰমাত্মা
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Never ব্ৰহ্ম or পৰমাত্মা alone. In 1 John, MUST NEVER be used for the plural, testable ‘spirits’ of 4:1 (see spirits_plural, new term) — this distinction must be enforced at the term level in every segment of 4:1-6, and in 3:24, 4:13.
Son Of God
Approved rendering: ঈশ্বৰৰ পুত্ৰ
Transliteration: Iswôror putrô
Doctrine: The Incarnation and Antichrist; Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life
Rejected alternatives: ঈশ্বৰৰ অংশ, দেৱপুৰুষ
Original: υἱὸς τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Full phrase required. In 1 John, confessing ‘Jesus is the Son of God’ is the letter’s salvation-defining confession (4:15; 5:5, 5:20).
Righteousness
Approved rendering: ধাৰ্মিকতা
Transliteration: dharmikôta
Doctrine: Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth
Rejected alternatives: ধৰ্ম, পুণ্য, ন্যায়
Original: δικαιοσύνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Never ধৰ্ম. In 1 John, ‘practicing righteousness’ (2:29; 3:7,10) is evidence of, never a merit basis for, new birth and sonship.
Incarnation
Approved rendering: দেহধাৰণ
Transliteration: dehôdharon
Doctrine: The Incarnation and Antichrist
Rejected alternatives: অৱতাৰ, প্ৰকাশ
Original: ὁ λόγος σὰρξ ἐγένετο (theological name; cf. 1 John 1:1-3, 4:2-3)
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. CRITICAL: never অৱতাৰ. Mandatory distinguishing note at first use in every document. In 1 John, grounded from the letter’s opening eyewitness testimony (1:1-3) and defended against denial in the antichrist test (4:2-3).
Salvation
Approved rendering: পৰিত্ৰাণ
Transliteration: poritran
Doctrine: Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life
Rejected alternatives: মুক্তি, মোক্ষ, নিস্তাৰ
Original: σωτηρία
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. CRITICAL: never মুক্তি or মোক্ষ. In 1 John, connects to ‘Savior of the world’ (ত্ৰাণকৰ্তা, new term, 4:14).
Christ
Approved rendering: খ্ৰীষ্ট
Transliteration: Khristô
Doctrine: The Incarnation and Antichrist
Rejected alternatives: মচীহ (reserved for the distinct OT-fulfillment ‘Messiah’ doctrine entry; not used as the repeated title within Jesus’ name in running 1 John text)
Original: Χριστός
Category: Christology
New term for this curriculum. Not a separate baseline Romans TM key (Romans TM uses মচীহ for the OT-fulfillment Messiah concept). Transliterated per the established AI-requirements standard (Khristo). In 1 John, confessing ‘Jesus is the Christ’ is the letter’s repeated doctrinal test (2:22; 5:1); functions as part of Jesus’ full title (Jesus Christ, 1:3; 2:1; 4:2) distinct from, but consistent with, the baseline messiah entry.
Word Of Life
Approved rendering: জীৱনৰ বাক্য
Transliteration: jibônor bakyô
Doctrine: The Incarnation and Antichrist
Original: ὁ λόγος τῆς ζωῆς
Category: Christology
New term. Anchors the letter’s opening eyewitness testimony (heard, seen, touched, 1:1) to Christ’s real, embodied incarnation. Grounds দেহধাৰণ before it is named doctrinally. Must not be paraphrased into a shorter, less sensorily explicit clause.
Eternal Life
Approved rendering: অনন্ত জীৱন
Transliteration: ônôntô jibôn
Doctrine: Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life
Rejected alternatives: মুক্তি, মোক্ষ
Original: ζωὴ αἰώνιος
Category: Salvation
New term, Critical, following the same forbidden-substitution discipline as salvation. NEVER মুক্তি or মোক্ষ. Must not be conflated with the ātman’s liberation from সংসাৰ and dissolving into an undifferentiated Brahman; eternal life is unending, personal, relational life with a personal God through the Son (5:11-13, 20), retaining personal identity.
God Is Light
Approved rendering: ঈশ্বৰ পোহৰ
Transliteration: Iswôr pohor
Doctrine: God is Light and God is Love
Rejected alternatives: ঈশ্বৰ উজ্জ্বল (adjectival softening: ‘God is luminous/enlightened’)
Original: ὁ θεὸς φῶς ἐστιν
Category: God
New term. Predicate-identity statement (1:5) parallel in construction to ‘God is love’ (4:8). The noun-noun identity grammar must never be softened to an adjectival description. Must not be read through a Puranic divine-luster (tejas/prabha) frame.
Propitiation
Approved rendering: প্ৰায়শ্চিত্তৰ বলিদান
Transliteration: prayaxcittôr bolidan
Doctrine: Confession and Forgiveness of Sin; The Incarnation and Antichrist
Rejected alternatives: প্ৰায়শ্চিত্ত (alone)
Original: ἱλασμός
Category: Salvation
New term, Critical. Bare প্ৰায়শ্চিত্ত implies a self-performed penitential rite that works off karmic guilt through austerity or offering — the reverse of this doctrine. Mandatory reversal note required at every occurrence (2:2; 4:10): God himself provides and sends this sacrifice; the sinner performs no penance and contributes no merit.
Advocate
Approved rendering: সহায়ক
Transliteration: xohayôk
Doctrine: Confession and Forgiveness of Sin
Rejected alternatives: উকীল, গুৰু
Original: παράκλητος
Category: Christology
New term, Critical. Christ’s unique heavenly intercessory role before the Father (2:1); must not collapse into a human priestly or guru-mediator role, nor into ritual intermediation through a Satradhikar or purohit.
Love
Approved rendering: প্ৰেম / প্ৰেম কৰা
Transliteration: prem / prem kôra
Doctrine: God is Light and God is Love; Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth
Rejected alternatives: মৰম (too weak/generic)
Original: ἀγάπη / ἀγαπάω
Category: Love
New term, Critical, established ABS rendering (cf. John 3:16). MANDATORY distinguishing note at every first occurrence in any document: biblical agape is self-giving, sacrificial, cross-demonstrated love (4:10), NOT the romantic, viraha-inflected prema-bhakti (Radha-Krishna devotional love) of Sankardev/Madhavdev Borgeet and Ankiya Naat literature. This is the single highest-exposure term in the core passage 4:7-21.
Antichrist
Approved rendering: খ্ৰীষ্টাৰি
Transliteration: Khristari
Doctrine: The Incarnation and Antichrist
Rejected alternatives: অসুৰ, ৰক্ষস
Original: ἀντίχριστος
Category: Christology
New term, Critical. Calque-compound (খ্ৰীষ্ট + আৰি), newly coined with no prior currency in Assamese religious vocabulary; mandatory first-occurrence gloss (‘one who denies that Jesus is the Christ come in the flesh’) at every document, per 2:18-23; 4:1-3. Never assimilated to mythological adversary-figures (Ravana, Hiranyakashipu) requiring a fresh avatar-defeat each age.
Born Of God
Approved rendering: ঈশ্বৰৰ পৰা জন্ম হৱা
Transliteration: Iswôror pora jônmô howa
Doctrine: Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth; Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life
Rejected alternatives: পুনৰ্জন্ম (reincarnation), দ্বিজ (twice-born caste status)
Original: γεννάω ἐκ τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Salvation
New term, Critical. One-time spiritual regeneration producing a permanent changed nature, evidenced by righteousness, love, and overcoming (2:29; 3:9; 4:7; 5:1,4,18). Never পুনৰ্জন্ম and never দ্বিজ (twice-born caste/guru-diksha initiation identity). Always use the full descriptive phrase; never shorten to a bare জন্ম form.
Devil
Approved rendering: শয়তান
Transliteration: xoytan
Doctrine: The Incarnation and Antichrist; Overcoming the World
Rejected alternatives: অসুৰ, ৰাক্ষস
Original: διάβολος
Category: Sin
New term, Critical. Personal spiritual being who has sinned ‘from the beginning’, already decisively defeated in Christ’s work (3:8), whose ongoing activity is deception, not a repeating cosmic battle (5:19). Not a mythological demon/asura-rakshasa adversary figure requiring a fresh avatar-intervention each age.
Flesh
Approved rendering: মাংস
Transliteration: mangxô
Doctrine: The Incarnation and Antichrist
Original: σάρξ
Category: Christology
New term, Critical. Genuine human physicality assumed by the eternal Son in the incarnation, denied by antichrist teaching (4:2). Reinforces দেহধাৰণ; never a temporary, apparition-like divine appearance.
Only Son
Approved rendering: একমাত্ৰ পুত্ৰ
Transliteration: ekmatrô putrô
Doctrine: The Incarnation and Antichrist; God is Light and God is Love
Original: μονογενής
Category: Christology
New term, Critical. Extends the baseline son_of_god entry with the specific nuance of exclusivity: God’s one-and-only Son, sent once (4:9). Never dropped even when space is tight.
Idols
Approved rendering: মূৰ্তি
Transliteration: murti
Doctrine: Testing the Spirits; God is Light and God is Love
Original: εἴδωλα
Category: Worship
New term, Critical. Highest cultural-collision term in the book (5:21, the letter’s closing verse). মূৰ্তি is the standard Assamese word for a consecrated deity-image central to daily Hindu/Shakta worship (e.g., Kamakhya) and is also the specific practice Sankardev’s aniconic Ekasarana Dharma tradition itself historically reformed against. Mandatory translator note required at every occurrence, keeping the command focused on exclusive devotion to the true God/Christ of this letter, not intra-Hindu iconic/aniconic worship debates.
High Risk Terms
Faith
Approved rendering: বিশ্বাস
Transliteration: biswax
Doctrine: Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life; Overcoming the World
Rejected alternatives: শ্ৰদ্ধা, ভক্তি
Original: πίστις / πιστεύω
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package. ভক্তি (bhakti) never used for biblical faith. In 1 John, ‘this is the victory that has overcome the world — our faith’ (5:4).
Sin
Approved rendering: পাপ
Transliteration: pap
Doctrine: Confession and Forgiveness of Sin
Rejected alternatives: অধৰ্ম, অশুচিতা
