Doctrine Analysis
Doctrine Analysis — Mark 1–16 (Full-Book Doctrine Matrix)
Purpose
This document executes PRD Phase 1 Step 4: a complete, chapter-by-chapter doctrine matrix for the Gospel of Mark, covering every chapter from first to last. It is fully consistent with doctrine_risk_registry.json (Mark, v1) — same 38 doctrines, same risk tiers, same review routing. No doctrine, risk tier, or routing decision in this document contradicts that registry; this document adds chapter-sequencing, cross-references, and translation-risk rationale needed for Phase 2 planning.
The core passage, Mark 10:35–45 (James and John’s request; “the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve… a ransom for many”), is the theological anchor of the curriculum. It is the convergence point of four of the eight named curriculum doctrines — Servanthood versus Worldly Greatness, The Necessity of the Cross, The Ransom for Many, and (via “Son of Man”) The Messianic Secret / Son of Man Christology — but it does not define the scope of this analysis. Every chapter of Mark is analyzed below, including chapters that contribute primarily supporting or background material.

Chapter-by-Chapter Doctrine Matrix
Mark 1 — Beginnings: Gospel, Baptism, Authority
| Doctrine | Assamese Name | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gospel Proclamation | সুসমাচাৰ প্ৰচাৰ | 1:1, 1:14-15 | High | Mark’s opening line names the entire book “the gospel” — this generic-sounding English word must render as the same technical সুসমাচাৰ used throughout the Romans baseline, not a softened “good news” that reads as one devotional message among several. | Human theologian |
| Sonship of Christ | খ্ৰীষ্টৰ পুত্ৰত্ব | 1:1, 1:11 | Critical | The Father’s voice at baptism (“my beloved Son”) must not read as one especially favored bhakta among many addressed with filial affection in bhakti literature; this is the first of three Markan “voice from heaven” Sonship declarations (1:11; 9:7; and the human echo at 15:39). | Human theologian |
| Kingdom of God Breaking In | ঈশ্বৰৰ ৰাজ্যৰ আৰম্ভণি | 1:15 | High | ἤγγικεν (“has drawn near”) must convey a reign already breaking in, not solely a future hope or a political/regional kingdom claim — sensitive given Assam’s own history of the Ahom kingdom. | Human theologian |
| Repentance and Kingdom Entry | মন-পালটন আৰু ৰাজ্যত প্ৰবেশ | 1:4, 1:15 | High | Inward reorientation, never a merit-earning ritual act of penance (তপস্যা/প্ৰায়শ্চিত্ত). | Human theologian |
| Authority over Demons and Satan | শয়তান আৰু দুষ্ট আত্মাৰ ওপৰত ক্ষমতা | 1:23-27, 1:34, 1:39 | High | Personal hostile spirit-beings, never ভূত (folk ancestral ghost). | Human theologian |
| The Messianic Secret | মচীহাৰ ৰহস্য | 1:34, 1:44 | Critical | The first silencing commands; must be framed as progressive, historically unfolding revelation, not permanent guru-gated esoteric knowledge. | Human theologian |
| Jesus’ Authority over Sickness | ৰোগৰ ওপৰত ক্ষমতা | 1:40-45 | High | Leprosy-cleansing flows from Christ’s own person/delegated divine right, not accumulated healer-merit or ritual স্নান. | Human theologian |
| Synagogue and Ekklesia Distinction | সমাজ-গৃহ আৰু মণ্ডলীৰ পাৰ্থক্য | 1:21, 1:23, 1:29, 1:39 | Medium | Real functional parallel to Namghar exists but institutions must stay lexically separate; also distinct from মণ্ডলী. | Native speaker review |
Mark 2 — Authority to Forgive, Lord of the Sabbath
| Doctrine | Assamese Name | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Authority to Forgive Sins | পাপ ক্ষমা কৰাৰ অধিকাৰ | 2:1-12 | Critical | The scribes’ objection (“who can forgive sins but God alone?”) confirms this is a divine-prerogative claim embedded in a healing narrative — never a casual social pardon. | Human theologian |
| Son of Man Christology | মানুহৰ পুত্ৰৰ খ্ৰীষ্টতত্ত্ব | 2:10, 2:28 | Critical | First two occurrences of the title; must stay lexically distinct from ঈশ্বৰৰ পুত্ৰ. Mandatory translator note at 2:10 (first occurrence in book). | Human theologian |
| Sabbath Lordship | বিশ্ৰাম বাৰৰ প্ৰভুত্ব | 2:23-28 | Medium | Requires OT Sabbath-commandment background note for low-OT-literacy readers; primarily a comprehension, not syncretism, risk. | Native speaker review |
Mark 3 — Conflict, Blasphemy, True Family
| Doctrine | Assamese Name | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sabbath Lordship | বিশ্ৰাম বাৰৰ প্ৰভুত্ব | 3:1-6 | Medium | Continues 2:23-28’s controversy; same handling. | Native speaker review |
| Authority over Demons and Satan | শয়তান আৰু দুষ্ট আত্মাৰ ওপৰত ক্ষমতা | 3:22-30 | High | Beelzebul controversy; Satan as a personal organizing power, not an impersonal evil-principle. | Human theologian |
| Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit | পবিত্ৰ আত্মাৰ বিৰুদ্ধে নিন্দা | 3:28-29 | Critical | Precise, narrow definition — deliberate attribution of the Spirit’s work to Satan — never generalized to ordinary disrespect or softened pastorally. | Human theologian |
| True Family and the Will of God | ঈশ্বৰৰ ইচ্ছা আৰু সঁচা পৰিয়াল | 3:31-35 | Medium | Redefines belonging around obedience to God’s will rather than blood kinship or caste lineage; moderate risk given Assamese extended-family/caste social structures. | Native speaker review |
Mark 4 — Parables, Mystery, Authority over Nature
| Doctrine | Assamese Name | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Parables and the Mystery of the Kingdom | দৃষ্টান্ত আৰু ৰাজ্যৰ ৰহস্য | 4:1-34 | Critical | ৰহস্য risks collision with tantric/esoteric “rahasya” traditions gated to initiates; Mark’s mystery is progressive revelation moving toward open proclamation (4:22), not closed mystical gnosis. | Human theologian |
| The Messianic Secret | মচীহাৰ ৰহস্য | 4:11 | Critical | Same standing note as 1:34/1:44; apply consistently. | Human theologian |
| Kingdom of God Breaking In | ঈশ্বৰৰ ৰাজ্যৰ আৰম্ভণি | 4:11, 4:26, 4:30 | High | Small-seed/growth parables stress hidden-yet-certain present growth, not only eschatological future. | Human theologian |
| Jesus’ Authority over Nature | প্ৰকৃতিৰ ওপৰত ক্ষমতা | 4:35-41 | High | Structurally tied to “who then is this?” — must not read as a wonder-worker’s feat comparable to Puranic deity nature-control narratives. | Human theologian |
Mark 5 — Demons, Death, and Faith
| Doctrine | Assamese Name | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Authority over Demons and Satan | শয়তান আৰু দুষ্ট আত্মাৰ ওপৰত ক্ষমতা | 5:1-20 | High | ”Legion” — mass demonic possession; must preserve personal, organized-hostility framing. | Human theologian |
| Sonship of Christ | খ্ৰীষ্টৰ পুত্ৰত্ব | 5:7 | Critical | Demonic confession (“Son of the Most High God”) is theologically true but spoken by a hostile source — translator note should flag this ironic-confession pattern. | Human theologian |
| Faith that Saves and Heals | সুস্থ কৰা আৰু পৰিত্ৰাণ দিয়া বিশ্বাস | 5:25-34 | High | σῴζω’s dual heal/save register (5:34) must be chosen context-sensitively, not defaulted to one sense. | Human theologian |
| Jesus’ Authority over Sickness | ৰোগৰ ওপৰত ক্ষমতা | 5:35-43 | High | Raising of Jairus’s daughter; authority over death itself as extension of healing authority. | Human theologian |
Mark 6 — Rejection, Mission, Power over Nature
| Doctrine | Assamese Name | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unbelief and Hardness of Heart | অবিশ্বাস আৰু কঠিন হৃদয় | 6:1-6, 6:52 | High | Nazareth’s rejection and the disciples’ dullness despite the feeding miracle — persistent spiritual dullness, not mere intellectual doubt. | Human theologian |
| Synagogue and Ekklesia Distinction | সমাজ-গৃহ আৰু মণ্ডলীৰ পাৰ্থক্য | 6:2 | Medium | Consistent handling with 1:21 etc. | Native speaker review |
| Jesus’ Authority over Nature | প্ৰকৃতিৰ ওপৰত ক্ষমতা | 6:45-52 | High | Walking on water; “It is I” (ἐγώ εἰμι) carries Exodus 3:14 LXX resonance requiring a translator note. | Human theologian |
| Faith and Discipleship amid Fear | ভয়ৰ মাজত বিশ্বাস আৰু শিষ্যত্ব | 6:50 | High | ”Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid” — faith met by Christ’s presence and word, not denial of frightening circumstance or meditative self-calming. | Human theologian |
| Jesus’ Authority over Sickness | ৰোগৰ ওপৰত ক্ষমতা | 6:56 | High | Healings by touching his garment; guard against a magical-relic reading. | Human theologian |
Mark 7 — Purity Redefined
| Doctrine | Assamese Name | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Purity Redefined | শুচিতাৰ পুনৰ্বিভাজন | 7:1-23 | High | Relocates defilement from ceremonial/dietary rule to the heart’s moral condition — direct force against Assam’s own layered ritual-purity customs (Namghar entry rules, caste commensality). Must preserve both the external-rule pole and internal-heart pole without diluting either. | Human theologian |
| Corban and Legalistic Vow Technicality | কৰ্বান আৰু আইনী কৌশল | 7:11 | Low | Minor comprehension risk requiring only a brief explanatory gloss. | Automated review |
| Authority over Demons and Satan | শয়তান আৰু দুষ্ট আত্মাৰ ওপৰত ক্ষমতা | 7:24-30 | High | Syrophoenician woman’s daughter; note the Gentile-inclusion dimension alongside the exorcism. | Human theologian |
| Jesus’ Authority over Sickness | ৰোগৰ ওপৰত ক্ষমতা | 7:31-37 | High | Healing of the deaf-mute man; continues the authority-over-sickness thread. | Human theologian |
Mark 8 — Confession and the First Passion Prediction
| Doctrine | Assamese Name | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gospel Proclamation | সুসমাচাৰ প্ৰচাৰ | 8:35 | High | ”Whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s” — গospel tied directly to costly discipleship. | Human theologian |
| Peter’s Confession and the Way of the Cross | পিতৰৰ স্বীকাৰোক্তি আৰু ক্ৰুচৰ পথ | 8:27-33 | Critical | Narrative/theological hinge of the whole Gospel; Peter’s correct title (মচীহ/খ্ৰীষ্ট) paired with his rejection of the necessity of suffering — must not present the confession as complete on its own; it anticipates the identical triumphalist error in 10:35-45. | Human theologian |
| The Necessity of the Cross | ক্ৰুচৰ প্ৰয়োজনীয়তা | 8:31-34 | Critical | δεῖ (“must”) is purposive divine necessity, never impersonal fate/karma (ভাগ্যত থাকে forbidden). | Human theologian |
| Son of Man Christology | মানুহৰ পুত্ৰৰ খ্ৰীষ্টতত্ত্ব | 8:31, 8:38 | Critical | First passion-prediction use of the title, paired with future-glory use in 8:38 — both senses (suffering now / glory later) must remain visible in translation. | Human theologian |
| Unbelief and Hardness of Heart | অবিশ্বাস আৰু কঠিন হৃদয় | 8:17-21 | High | ”Do you not yet understand?” — continues from 6:52. | Human theologian |
Mark 9 — Transfiguration and the Path Downward
| Doctrine | Assamese Name | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kingdom of God Breaking In | ঈশ্বৰৰ ৰাজ্যৰ আৰম্ভণি | 9:1, 9:47 | High | ”Some standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom” — inaugurated-eschatology tension. | Human theologian |
| Transfiguration and Beloved Sonship | ৰূপান্তৰ আৰু প্ৰিয় পুত্ৰত্ব | 9:2-8 | Critical | The Father’s direct voice again confirms unique, unrepeatable Sonship — must not read as a Krishna-style avatar self-disclosure moment or as one of several beloved devotees addressed affectionately. | Human theologian |
| Son of Man Christology | মানুহৰ পুত্ৰৰ খ্ৰীষ্টতত্ত্ব | 9:9, 9:12, 9:31 | Critical | Second passion prediction; consistent title use required across all three predictions (8:31; 9:31; 10:33). | Human theologian |
| The Necessity of the Cross | ক্ৰুচৰ প্ৰয়োজনীয়তা | 9:31 | Critical | Second of three explicit “must suffer” predictions. | Human theologian |
| Servanthood versus Worldly Greatness | সেৱকভাব বিপক্ষে সাংসাৰিক মহানতা | 9:33-37 | High | First occurrence of the greatness-reversal teaching, directly anticipating 10:35-45; “receives a child” language of humility. | Human theologian |
| Faith and Discipleship amid Fear | ভয়ৰ মাজত বিশ্বাস আৰু শিষ্যত্ব | 9:24 | High | The father’s cry “I believe; help my unbelief” — faith and doubt held together, not faith as flawless certainty. | Human theologian |
Mark 10 — Core Passage: The Ransom, Servanthood, and the Third Passion Prediction
| Doctrine | Assamese Name | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eternal Life and the Cost of Discipleship | অনন্ত জীৱন আৰু শিষ্যত্বৰ মূল্য | 10:17-31 | Critical | The rich man’s question; personal relational অনন্ত জীৱন, never conflated with মোক্ষ (self-dissolution into the impersonal absolute). | Human theologian |
| Kingdom of God Breaking In | ঈশ্বৰৰ ৰাজ্যৰ আৰম্ভণি | 10:14-15, 10:23-25 | High | ”Receive the kingdom like a child”; wealth as an obstacle to entry. | Human theologian |
| The Necessity of the Cross | ক্ৰুচৰ প্ৰয়োজনীয়তা | 10:32-34, 10:45 | Critical | Third, most detailed passion prediction, immediately followed by the ransom saying — the two must be read/translated as one continuous unit, not disconnected sayings. | Human theologian |
| Servanthood versus Worldly Greatness | সেৱকভাব বিপক্ষে সাংসাৰিক মহানতা | 10:35-45 | High | CORE PASSAGE. James and John’s request for glory/status directly inverted by Jesus’ servant-teaching; দাস (slave) carries real risk of evoking historical bonded-labor/caste-servitude associations in Assamese social memory and must be marked as voluntary Christlike self-giving, never assigned social status. | Human theologian |
| The Ransom for Many | বহুতৰ বাবে উদ্ধাৰ-মূল্য | 10:45 | Critical | CORE PASSAGE — single highest-priority doctrinal term in the whole book. উদ্ধাৰ-মূল্য must be used; never মুক্তিমূল্য (root collision with মুক্তি/mokṣa, rebirth-liberation). ἀντὶ πολλῶν (“in place of/for many”) requires substitutionary-exchange phrasing (…ৰ সলনি), never merely benefit-language (…ৰ কাৰণে/বাবে). | Human theologian |
| Son of Man Christology | মানুহৰ পুত্ৰৰ খ্ৰীষ্টতত্ত্ব | 10:33, 10:45 | Critical | Third passion-prediction use of the title (10:33) plus its climactic servant/ransom self-description (10:45) — the title that most fully carries the Suffering-Servant identity named in the curriculum’s first doctrine. | Human theologian |
| Son of David and Messianic Acclamation | দায়ূদৰ পুত্ৰ আৰু মচীহীয় স্বীকৃতি | 10:46-52 | Critical | Bartimaeus’s cry is the first open messianic acclamation by an outsider, immediately after the ransom saying — requires OT Davidic-covenant background note. | Human theologian |
| Faith that Saves and Heals | সুস্থ কৰা আৰু পৰিত্ৰাণ দিয়া বিশ্বাস | 10:52 | High | ”Your faith has healed/saved you” — same dual σῴζω register as 5:34. | Human theologian |
Mark 11 — Triumphal Entry and Temple Judgment
| Doctrine | Assamese Name | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Son of David and Messianic Acclamation | দায়ূদৰ পুত্ৰ আৰু মচীহীয় স্বীকৃতি | 11:1-10 | Critical | Hosanna/“blessed is he who comes” — public royal-messianic acclamation building directly on 10:47-48. | Human theologian |
| Kingdom of God Breaking In | ঈশ্বৰৰ ৰাজ্যৰ আৰম্ভণি | 11:9-10 (implied) | High | Triumphal entry as visible, public in-breaking of the announced kingdom — but ironically headed toward the cross, not a political coronation. | Human theologian |
| Temple Judgment and Prayer | মন্দিৰৰ ওপৰত বিচাৰ | 11:12-21 | Medium | Fig tree/temple-cleansing; মন্দিৰ acceptable for the literal historical Temple but must never be extended to render ekklesia (মণ্ডলী). | Native speaker review |
Mark 12 — Parable, Riddle, Commandment, Resurrection Debate
| Doctrine | Assamese Name | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Parables and the Mystery of the Kingdom | দৃষ্টান্ত আৰু ৰাজ্যৰ ৰহস্য | 12:1-12 | Critical | Parable of the tenants; cornerstone/rejection-vindication imagery previews the passion. | Human theologian |
| Resurrection Hope and the Sadducees’ Debate | পুনৰুত্থানৰ আশা আৰু বিতৰ্ক | 12:18-27 | Critical | ”God of the living, not of the dead” — বodily, final resurrection grounded in God’s character; পুনৰুত্থান, never পুনৰ্জন্ম. | Human theologian |
| The Greatest Commandment | মহান আজ্ঞা | 12:28-34 | Medium | Love-command as covenantal obedience, not devotional bhakti-sentiment divorced from ethical content. | Native speaker review |
| Kingdom of God Breaking In | ঈশ্বৰৰ ৰাজ্যৰ আৰম্ভণি | 12:34 | High | ”You are not far from the kingdom of God.” | Human theologian |
| Christ’s Deity and the Davidic Riddle | খ্ৰীষ্টৰ ঈশ্বৰত্ব আৰু দায়ূদীয় প্ৰশ্ন | 12:35-37 | High | ”How can the Christ be David’s son and David’s Lord?” — must preserve the riddle’s unresolved logical force rather than flattening it. | Human theologian |
Mark 13 — Apocalyptic Discourse
| Doctrine | Assamese Name | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Temple Judgment and Prayer | মন্দিৰৰ ওপৰত বিচাৰ | 13:1-2 | Medium | ”Not one stone will be left” — sets up the whole discourse. | Native speaker review |
| Apocalyptic Hope and Watchfulness amid Fear | প্ৰত্যাশা আৰু সাৱধানতা | 13:1-37 | High | Specific, historically locatable sign(s) and a singular future coming in glory — must not be assimilated to cyclical Hindu degeneration concepts (Kali Yuga descent) or to yogic “wakeful consciousness” (jāgṛti). | Human theologian |
| Gospel Proclamation | সুসমাচাৰ প্ৰচাৰ | 13:10 | High | ”The gospel must first be proclaimed to all nations” — mission scope tied to the end. | Human theologian |
| Son of Man Christology | মানুহৰ পুত্ৰৰ খ্ৰীষ্টতত্ত্ব | 13:26 | Critical | Future-glory sense of the title, paralleling Daniel 7:13-14; must read as the same figure who suffers in 8:31/9:31/10:33, not a separate being. | Human theologian |
Mark 14 — Passover, Betrayal, Gethsemane, Arrest
| Doctrine | Assamese Name | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Passover and the New Covenant | নিস্তাৰ-পৰ্ব আৰু নতুন নিয়ম | 14:1, 14:12-25 | Critical | Last Supper set within Exodus-deliverance framework; নিয়মৰ তেজ must preserve both sacrificial and covenant-establishing senses; নিস্তাৰ must not drift toward মুক্তি/mokṣa associations. | Human theologian |
| The Ransom for Many | বহুতৰ বাবে উদ্ধাৰ-মূল্য | 14:24 | Critical | ”My blood of the covenant” directly completes 10:45’s ransom logic — same forbidden-term discipline applies (never মুক্তি root). | Human theologian |
| Betrayal and Divine Sovereignty | বিশ্বাসঘাতকতা আৰু ঈশ্বৰৰ সাৰ্বভৌমত্ব | 14:10-11, 14:18-21, 14:41-46 | High | Same verb (παραδίδωμι) describes Judas’s treachery and the Father’s redemptive “handing over” — avoid both pure-accident and fatalistic (ভাগ্য/কৰ্মফল) framings. | Human theologian |
| Son of Man Christology | মানুহৰ পুত্ৰৰ খ্ৰীষ্টতত্ত্ব | 14:21, 14:41, 14:62 | Critical | Includes the trial confession before the high priest (14:61-62), paired directly with Sonship of Christ below. | Human theologian |
| Gethsemane and the Cup of Suffering | গেৎচিমানী আৰু যাতনাৰ পান-পাত্ৰ | 14:32-42 | High | আব্বা পিতা intimacy amid anguish; the “cup” is the cup of suffering/wrath anticipated since 10:38 — submission must not read as fatalistic resignation. | Human theologian |
| The Necessity of the Cross | ক্ৰুচৰ প্ৰয়োজনীয়তা | 14:36 | Critical | ”Not what I will, but what you will” — purposive submission to the Father’s redemptive plan. | Human theologian |
| Sonship of Christ | খ্ৰীষ্টৰ পুত্ৰত্ব | 14:61-62 | Critical | Jesus’ own affirmation before the Sanhedrin, immediately preceding the crucifixion narrative. | Human theologian |
Mark 15 — Crucifixion
| Doctrine | Assamese Name | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crucifixion and Ironic Kingship | ক্ৰুচবিদ্ধকৰণ আৰু বিড়ম্বনাময় ৰাজপদ | 15:1-32 | High | ”King of the Jews” mockery literally fulfills the “right and left” request of 10:37 — irony must carry underlying truth, not read as mere mockery. | Human theologian |
| The Necessity of the Cross | ক্ৰুচৰ প্ৰয়োজনীয়তা | 15:1-39 | Critical | The historical execution itself; ক্ৰুচ must denote the specific Roman instrument, never a generic hardship metaphor here. | Human theologian |
| The Centurion’s Confession | শতপতিৰ স্বীকাৰোক্তি | 15:39 | Critical | ”Truly this man was the Son of God” — first full human confession of divine Sonship, spoken paradoxically at the point of deepest shame; answers 4:41’s “who then is this?”; the single most theologically climactic occurrence of ঈশ্বৰৰ পুত্ৰ in the book. | Human theologian |
| Sonship of Christ | খ্ৰীষ্টৰ পুত্ৰত্ব | 15:39 | Critical | Same passage as above; cross-reference required. | Human theologian |
Mark 16 — Resurrection and Commission
| Doctrine | Assamese Name | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk | Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Resurrection of Christ and the Empty Tomb | খ্ৰীষ্টৰ পুনৰুত্থান আৰু খালী মৈদাম | 16:1-8 | Critical | Vindicating fulfillment of all three passion predictions; পুনৰুত্থান, never পুনৰ্জন্ম. Earliest-attested ending (16:8) closes on trembling silence — must not be smoothed into simple triumph. | Human theologian |
| Faith and Discipleship amid Fear | ভয়ৰ মাজত বিশ্বাস আৰু শিষ্যত্ব | 16:8 | High | The women’s fear at the empty tomb — deliberately unresolved note; do not editorially resolve the fear into confident joy if translating the shorter ending. | Human theologian |
| Gospel Proclamation | সুসমাচাৰ প্ৰচাৰ | 16:15 | High | Longer-ending commission (“go into all the world and proclaim the gospel”); flag textual-tradition note (longer ending, Mark 16:9-20) for translators/reviewers. | Human theologian |
Cross-Doctrine Connections Anchored to the Core Passage (Mark 10:35-45)
- Servanthood ↔ Necessity of the Cross ↔ Ransom — 10:35-45 is Mark’s structural climax of the three passion predictions (8:31; 9:31; 10:33-34): worldly-greatness ambition (10:35-37) is directly answered by Jesus redefining greatness as service (10:42-44) and grounding that service in his own substitutionary death (10:45). Phase 2 segment translation of this passage must be treated as a single theological unit, not four unrelated verses.
- Son of Man Christology is the lexical hinge holding this unit together: the same title (মানুহৰ পুত্ৰ) that predicts suffering (10:33) is the one who “came not to be served but to serve” and gives his life “a ransom for many” (10:45) — reinforcing that the Suffering Servant and the divine Son of Man are one and the same figure, not two separate identities.
- The Messianic Secret frames the disciples’ persistent misunderstanding in this passage (James and John still seeking thrones even after three explicit passion predictions) as evidence that full recognition of Jesus’ identity awaits the cross (15:39), not earlier private disclosure.
- This core passage should be cross-referenced in Phase 2 review against 9:33-37 (first greatness-reversal teaching), 14:24 (ransom completed in covenant blood), and 15:39 (identity fully unveiled) to maintain terminological and theological consistency across the whole book.
This matrix is fully consistent with doctrine_risk_registry.json (Mark, v1). Any future change to a risk tier or doctrine definition must be made in the registry first, then reflected here.
Critical Risk Doctrines
Sonship of Christ
Assamese name: খ্ৰীষ্টৰ পুত্ৰত্ব
Key terms: son of God, beloved Son, my Son
Review routing: Human theologian
Eternal, unique, co-equal divine Sonship, not one especially beloved bhakta among many addressed with filial affection by a chosen deity within Ekasarana bhakti literature. Climaxes in the centurion’s confession (15:39), which must not be softened.
Son of Man Christology
Assamese name: মানুহৰ পুত্ৰৰ খ্ৰীষ্টতত্ত্ব
Key terms: Son of Man, the Son of Man must suffer, Son of Man coming in glory
Review routing: Human theologian
Must remain lexically distinct from ঈশ্বৰৰ পুত্ৰ (Son of God); collapsing the two either erases the humility/suffering emphasis of ‘Son of Man’ or drains ‘Son of God’ of unique divine-Sonship force. Requires a Daniel 7 background note distinguishing this from any avatar-descent framework.
The Messianic Secret
Assamese name: মচীহাৰ ৰহস্য
Key terms: mystery of the kingdom, tell no one, who then is this?, Son of Man
Review routing: Human theologian
Progressive, historically unfolding revelation culminating in open proclamation at the cross (15:39), NOT a permanently esoteric gnosis reserved for an initiated spiritual elite as in tantric/rahasya traditions where secret knowledge remains guru-gated and closed.
Authority to Forgive Sins
Assamese name: পাপ ক্ষমা কৰাৰ অধিকাৰ
Key terms: your sins are forgiven, authority to forgive sins, who can forgive sins but God alone
Review routing: Human theologian
A direct claim to divine prerogative embedded in a healing narrative — the scribes’ objection confirms this is a deity-of-Christ claim, not a casual social pardon; must not be softened into mere encouragement or reassurance.
Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit
Assamese name: পবিত্ৰ আত্মাৰ বিৰুদ্ধে নিন্দা
Key terms: blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, unforgivable sin
Review routing: Human theologian
The one sin Mark identifies as unforgivable — deliberate, willful attribution of the Spirit’s clearly divine work to Satan; must not be generalized into ordinary disrespect or any sin against God, nor softened for pastoral comfort.
Parables and the Mystery of the Kingdom
Assamese name: দৃষ্টান্ত আৰু ৰাজ্যৰ ৰহস্য
Key terms: parable, mystery of the kingdom of God, nothing hidden except to be made known
Review routing: Human theologian
ৰহস্য directly risks collision with tantric/esoteric ‘rahasya’ traditions, where secret knowledge is guru-imparted and permanently gated to initiates; Mark’s mystery is progressive revelation moving toward open, public proclamation (4:22), not a closed mystical system reserved for spiritual elites.
Peter’s Confession and the Way of the Cross
Assamese name: পিতৰৰ স্বীকাৰোক্তি আৰু ক্ৰুচৰ পথ
Key terms: You are the Christ, the Son of Man must suffer, get behind me, Satan
Review routing: Human theologian
The narrative and theological hinge of the Gospel — Peter rightly names Jesus মচীহ/খ্ৰীষ্ট but immediately resists the necessity of suffering, exposing the same triumphalist misunderstanding later repeated by James and John (10:35-45); must not present Peter’s confession as complete or adequate on its own.
The Necessity of the Cross
Assamese name: ক্ৰুচৰ প্ৰয়োজনীয়তা
Key terms: must suffer, take up his cross, the Son of Man must be delivered
Review routing: Human theologian
δεῖ (divine necessity) must convey purposive divine plan, never impersonal fate or karma-inevitability; the cross itself must denote the specific historical Roman execution instrument, never a generic metaphor for hardship, and never softened to accommodate a triumphalist reading of Christ’s mission.
The Ransom for Many
Assamese name: বহুতৰ বাবে উদ্ধাৰ-মূল্য
Key terms: ransom, give his life, for many, in place of many
Review routing: Human theologian
The single highest-priority doctrinal term in the whole book. Existing Bengali-Assamese usage sometimes builds this word on the মুক্তি root, a direct collision with the baseline’s forbidden মুক্তি/মোক্ষ (liberation from the সংসাৰ rebirth cycle); this passage names a substitutionary price paid to a personal God for a historical, once-for-all deliverance, never an escape from cyclical rebirth. উদ্ধাৰ-মূল্য must be used, never মুক্তিমূল্য.
Transfiguration and Beloved Sonship
Assamese name: ৰূপান্তৰ আৰু প্ৰিয় পুত্ৰত্ব
Key terms: this is my beloved Son, listen to him, Moses and Elijah
Review routing: Human theologian
The Father’s direct voice confirms Jesus’ unique, singular Sonship — must reinforce ঈশ্বৰৰ পুত্ৰ as eternal and unrepeatable, not one especially beloved devotee among several addressed affectionately in bhakti devotional literature, nor a moment of Krishna-style avatar self-disclosure.
Eternal Life and the Cost of Discipleship
Assamese name: অনন্ত জীৱন আৰু শিষ্যত্বৰ মূল্য
Key terms: eternal life, what must I do to inherit eternal life, sell all you have
Review routing: Human theologian
Personal, relational, everlasting life in communion with a personal God, the believer’s self intact — must not be conflated with মোক্ষ, the dissolution of the individual self into an impersonal absolute sought in Vedantic and some Assamese devotional traditions.
Son of David and Messianic Acclamation
Assamese name: দায়ূদৰ পুত্ৰ আৰু মচীহীয় স্বীকৃতি
Key terms: Son of David, have mercy on me, Hosanna, blessed is he who comes
Review routing: Human theologian
Bartimaeus’s cry is the first open messianic acclamation by an outsider in Mark, occurring just as Jesus’ identity becomes increasingly public en route to Jerusalem; requires OT Davidic-covenant background, as there is no analogous royal-lineage covenant concept in Ekasarana or wider Assamese Vaishnavite tradition.
Resurrection Hope and the Sadducees’ Debate
Assamese name: পুনৰুত্থানৰ আশা আৰু বিতৰ্ক
Key terms: resurrection, God of the living, not of the dead
Review routing: Human theologian
Jesus affirms bodily resurrection grounded in God’s own unchanging character against the Sadducees’ denial — পুনৰুত্থান must never be rendered পুনৰ্জন্ম (rebirth within সংসাৰ); this is a single, final, bodily rising, not a repeatable cycle.
Passover and the New Covenant
Assamese name: নিস্তাৰ-পৰ্ব আৰু নতুন নিয়ম
Key terms: Passover, my blood of the covenant, this is my body
Review routing: Human theologian
Sets the Last Supper within the Exodus-deliverance framework and directly ties Jesus’ death to covenant-making and the ransom of 10:45; নিয়মৰ তেজ must preserve both the sacrificial and covenant-establishing senses together, and নিস্তাৰ (rescue) must not drift toward মুক্তি/mokṣa associations.
The Centurion’s Confession
Assamese name: শতপতিৰ স্বীকাৰোক্তি
Key terms: truly this man was the Son of God
Review routing: Human theologian
The first full human confession of Jesus’ divine Sonship in the entire Gospel, spoken paradoxically at the cross, answering 4:41’s ‘who then is this?’ — the single most theologically climactic occurrence of ঈশ্বৰৰ পুত্ৰ in Mark and requires the highest level of theologian review attention.
Resurrection of Christ and the Empty Tomb
Assamese name: খ্ৰীষ্টৰ পুনৰুত্থান আৰু খালী মৈদাম
Key terms: he has risen, he is not here, he has been raised
Review routing: Human theologian
The vindicating fulfillment of every passion prediction — পুনৰুত্থান, never পুনৰ্জন্ম; the Gospel’s earliest-attested ending (16:8) closes on trembling silence, a deliberately unresolved note that must not be smoothed into simple triumph in translation.
High Risk Doctrines
Gospel Proclamation
Assamese name: সুসমাচাৰ প্ৰচাৰ
Key terms: gospel, good news, the beginning of the gospel
Review routing: Human theologian
Mark opens the entire book by naming itself ‘the gospel’ — a unique, singular, authoritative proclamation, not one devotional teaching among several within the Ekasarana naam tradition. Must not be softened to generic ‘good news.‘
The Kingdom of God Breaking In
Assamese name: ঈশ্বৰৰ ৰাজ্যৰ আৰম্ভণি
Key terms: kingdom of God, has come near, kingdom of God belongs to such as these
Review routing: Human theologian
God’s sovereign reign already breaking into history now, not merely a future hope or a political/ethnic kingdom — carries added sensitivity given Assam’s regional political history (the historic Ahom kingdom), same caution as the Romans baseline’s kingdom_of_god entry.
Repentance and Kingdom Entry
Assamese name: মন-পালটন আৰু ৰাজ্যত প্ৰবেশ
Key terms: repent, repentance, believe the gospel
Review routing: Human theologian
Inward reorientation of mind and will toward God, not a ritual act of penance or austerity (তপস্যা/প্ৰায়শ্চিত্ত) that earns merit or accumulates religious credit.
Jesus’ Authority over Sickness
Assamese name: ৰোগৰ ওপৰত ক্ষমতা
Key terms: leprosy, cleanse, your faith has healed you, authority
Review routing: Human theologian
Christ’s healing authority flows from his own person and delegated divine right (ἐξουσία), not a healer’s accumulated merit, mantra-power, or ritual purification (স্নান) common in Assamese religious healing practice.
Jesus’ Authority over Sin (Demonic Power)
Assamese name: শয়তান আৰু দুষ্ট আত্মাৰ ওপৰত ক্ষমতা
Key terms: unclean spirit, demon, Satan, Legion, Beelzebul
Review routing: Human theologian
Personal, hostile spirit-beings under a personal Satan’s dominion, subject to Christ’s command — must not be rendered ভূত, which trivializes these beings as wandering ancestral ghosts of Assamese folk belief rather than agents of organized spiritual rebellion.
Jesus’ Authority over Nature
Assamese name: প্ৰকৃতিৰ ওপৰত ক্ষমতা
Key terms: he rebuked the wind, peace, be still, who then is this?
Review routing: Human theologian
Demonstrates unique divine authority over creation itself, structurally tied to the ‘who then is this?’ question the whole Gospel answers; must not be flattened into a wonder-worker’s magical feat comparable to Puranic deity-narratives of nature-control.
Faith and Discipleship amid Fear
Assamese name: ভয়ৰ মাজত বিশ্বাস আৰু শিষ্যত্ব
Key terms: do not be afraid, why are you afraid, have you no faith, take heart, it is I
Review routing: Human theologian
Faith met by Christ’s own presence and word, not by denial of frightening circumstances or by a meditative calm (naam-kirtan/japa) cultivated through one’s own devotional discipline.
Faith that Saves and Heals
Assamese name: সুস্থ কৰা আৰু পৰিত্ৰাণ দিয়া বিশ্বাস
Key terms: your faith has saved/healed you, σῴζω dual sense
Review routing: Human theologian
Mark deliberately exploits the double register of σῴζω (heal/save) so that physical healing signals the deeper, eternal পৰিত্ৰাণ Jesus brings; the Assamese rendering must be chosen context-sensitively so neither sense collapses into or is lost from the other.
Unbelief and Hardness of Heart
Assamese name: অবিশ্বাস আৰু কঠিন হৃদয়
Key terms: unbelief, hardened heart, he marveled at their unbelief
Review routing: Human theologian
Direct antonym of established বিশ্বাস; describes persistent spiritual dullness despite repeated demonstrations of Christ’s authority, not mere intellectual doubt or ordinary skepticism.
Purity Redefined
Assamese name: শুচিতাৰ পুনৰ্বিভাজন
Key terms: tradition of the elders, Corban, defile, out of the heart
Review routing: Human theologian
Jesus relocates defilement from ceremonial/dietary rules to the moral condition of the heart — a claim with direct force in a culture layered with its own inherited ritual-purity customs (e.g., Namghar entry purity, caste-based commensality rules); must preserve the pivot from external to internal without diluting either pole.
Servanthood versus Worldly Greatness
Assamese name: সেৱকভাব বিপক্ষে সাংসাৰিক মহানতা
Key terms: lord it over, servant of all, slave of all, the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve
Review routing: Human theologian
Kingdom greatness is redefined, not suppressed, as functional service; দাস (slave) carries real risk of evoking historical bonded-labor/caste-servitude associations in Assamese social memory and must be clearly marked as voluntary Christlike self-giving, not an assignment of social status.
Christ’s Deity and the Davidic Riddle
Assamese name: খ্ৰীষ্টৰ ঈশ্বৰত্ব আৰু দায়ূদীয় প্ৰশ্ন
Key terms: how can the Christ be David’s son and David’s Lord
Review routing: Human theologian
A veiled claim to a status higher than merely Davidic descent, feeding directly into the deity-of-Christ doctrine; must preserve the riddle’s logical force rather than resolving it prematurely in translation.
Apocalyptic Hope and Watchfulness amid Fear
Assamese name: প্ৰত্যাশা আৰু সাৱধানতা
Key terms: abomination of desolation, Son of Man coming in clouds with glory, watch, keep alert
Review routing: Human theologian
A specific, historically locatable, once-for-all sign and a singular future coming in glory — must not be assimilated to Hindu cyclical-degeneration concepts (e.g., descent into Kali Yuga) or to a meditative ‘wakeful consciousness’ (jāgṛti) sought in yogic practice; this is ethical-eschatological readiness for Christ’s own return.
Gethsemane and the Cup of Suffering
Assamese name: গেৎচিমানী আৰু যাতনাৰ পান-পাত্ৰ
Key terms: Abba, Father, remove this cup from me, not what I will but what you will
Review routing: Human theologian
Jesus’ intimate address আব্বা পিতা amid his greatest anguish models Romans 8:15’s adoption-cry, and the ‘cup’ names the cup of suffering and divine wrath anticipated since 10:38 — must not be read as an ordinary festive or ceremonial cup, nor should Jesus’ submission be read as fatalistic resignation.
Betrayal and Divine Sovereignty
Assamese name: বিশ্বাসঘাতকতা আৰু ঈশ্বৰৰ সাৰ্বভৌমত্ব
Key terms: betray, hand over, the Son of Man is betrayed
Review routing: Human theologian
The same verb (παραδίδωμι) describes Judas’s treachery and, implicitly, the Father’s own redemptive ‘handing over’ of the Son — must not be read as either pure accident or pure human evil severed from God’s sovereign plan; avoid any fatalistic (ভাগ্য/কৰ্মফল) framing.
Crucifixion and Ironic Kingship
Assamese name: ক্ৰুচবিদ্ধকৰণ আৰু বিড়ম্বনাময় ৰাজপদ
Key terms: King of the Jews, crucify, one on his right and one on his left
Review routing: Human theologian
Ironic royal proclamation at the point of deepest humiliation, literally fulfilling the ‘right and left’ imagery James and John sought in 10:37 — the crucified-king motif is central to Mark’s theology of the cross and must not be flattened into mere mockery without its underlying truth.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Sabbath Lordship
Assamese name: বিশ্ৰাম বাৰৰ প্ৰভুত্ব
Key terms: Sabbath, lord of the Sabbath
Review routing: Native speaker review
Requires OT background explanation of the Sabbath commandment for readers with low OT narrative literacy; risk here is primarily comprehension, not syncretism.
True Family and the Will of God
Assamese name: ঈশ্বৰৰ ইচ্ছা আৰু সঁচা পৰিয়াল
Key terms: will of God, my brother and sister and mother
Review routing: Native speaker review
Redefines belonging around obedience to God’s will rather than blood kinship or caste lineage; moderate risk given Assamese social structures organized around extended-family and caste identity.
Temple Judgment and Prayer
Assamese name: মন্দিৰৰ ওপৰত বিচাৰ
Key terms: house of prayer, den of robbers, not one stone will be left
Review routing: Native speaker review
Prophetic judgment on a specific historical religious institution and its corrupted commerce; মন্দিৰ is acceptable here for the literal Jerusalem Temple building but must not be extended as a rendering for the Christian ekklesia (মণ্ডলী, per baseline church entry).
The Greatest Commandment
Assamese name: মহান আজ্ঞা
Key terms: love the Lord your God, love your neighbor as yourself
Review routing: Native speaker review
Summarizes the whole Law’s intent as covenantal love, not ritual observance for merit; moderate risk of the love-command being heard as devotional bhakti-sentiment rather than covenantal obedience flowing from and toward a personal God.
Synagogue and Ekklesia Distinction
Assamese name: সমাজ-গৃহ আৰু মণ্ডলীৰ পাৰ্থক্য
Key terms: synagogue, synagogue ruler
Review routing: Native speaker review
A real functional-institutional parallel exists between the first-century synagogue and the Ekasarana Dharma’s নামঘৰ prayer-house institution, but the two must remain lexically and conceptually separate; also distinct from মণ্ডলী (the NT ekklesia/church established in the baseline).
Low Risk Doctrines
Corban and Legalistic Vow Technicality
Assamese name: কৰ্বান আৰু আইনী কৌশল
Key terms: Corban, a gift devoted to God
Review routing: Automated review
Illustrates how a legalistic vow-technicality could be used to violate the actual commandment to honor parents; minor comprehension risk requiring only a brief explanatory gloss, not a doctrinal syncretism risk.
