Semantic Analysis
Semantic Analysis — English → Assamese
1 Peter 1–5 | Original Koine Greek Study
Curriculum: 1 Peter Core passage: 1 Peter 1:3-9 Language authority: Romans Language Package (translation_memory.json, bible_term_registry.json, doctrine_risk_registry.json) — all recorded renderings below are reused exactly where the same term occurs. New terms are analyzed fresh and proposed for addition to translation memory in Phase 1 Step 8 (Core Glossary).
Method: Every load-bearing term is given: (1) original Greek word, (2) transliteration, (3) literal meaning, (4) semantic range, (5) English variants across common versions, (6) contextual theological meaning in 1 Peter, (7) proposed/enforced Assamese rendering with risk tier and rationale. Terms already fixed in the Romans baseline are marked [REUSED FROM BASELINE] and not re-litigated, only cross-referenced to their 1 Peter occurrence.
PART A — CORE PASSAGE: 1 Peter 1:3-9 (Verse-by-Verse)
1 Peter 1:3
- God / Father / Lord / Jesus Christ — θεός, πατήρ, κύριος, Ἰησοῦς Χριστός — [REUSED FROM BASELINE]: ঈশ্বৰ (Iswôr), পিতা (pita), প্ৰভু (prôbhu), যীচু খ্ৰীষ্ট (Yisu Khristo). All Critical risk per baseline; no change of rendering for 1 Peter.
- Mercy — ἔλεος (eleos); literal: pity/compassion shown to one in need; semantic range: covenant mercy (LXX ḥesed-adjacent), compassionate forbearance; English variants: mercy, compassion. Contextual meaning: God’s compassionate initiative that grounds the new birth — not human merit. Assamese: কৃপা (kripa). Risk: Medium. Baseline reserves কৃপা for “ordinary compassion/mercy in non-salvific contexts” (see grace entry) — here ἔλεος IS salvific-adjacent (grounds regeneration), so a translator note should clarify কৃপা here names God’s compassionate disposition, distinct from অনুগ্ৰহ (grace, the legal/unmerited-favor term) used elsewhere; the two are complementary, not interchangeable.
- Born again / caused to be born again — ἀναγεννήσας (anagennēsas), from ἀναγεννάω; literal: to beget/give birth to again, “regenerate”; semantic range: spiritual rebirth by divine act (also 1:23); English variants: “born again,” “caused us to be born anew,” “given us new birth.” Contextual theological meaning: a one-time, decisive, divinely-caused spiritual regeneration accompanying saving faith — the foundation of the “living hope.” Risk: Critical. NEVER render with পুনৰ্জন্ম (already forbidden for “resurrection,” denoting reincarnation within সংসাৰ). The surface similarity between “born again” and “reborn” is the single greatest lexical trap in this book: an Assamese Hindu/Ekasarana-background reader must not hear ἀναγεννάω as one more cycle of rebirth. A translator note explaining this distinction is mandatory at first occurrence, following the same convention established for পুনৰুত্থান.
- Living hope — ἐλπὶς ζῶσα (elpis zōsa); literal: hope that is alive/living; semantic range: confident expectation grounded in a real, present, active reality rather than wishful desire; English variants: “living hope,” “hope that lives.” Contextual theological meaning: hope that is alive because it rests on the historical, bodily resurrection of Christ — not a general optimism or fatalistic wish. Assamese: জীৱন্ত আশা (jibonto axa). Risk: High. আশা alone is a common, doctrinally neutral Assamese word for hope/expectation and carries no automatic syncretism risk; however, the doctrinal weight is high because “living” must be tied explicitly to the resurrection (not to a vague spiritual optimism, nor to hope for a favorable future rebirth). A translator note anchoring জীৱন্ত আশা to পুনৰুত্থান at first occurrence is recommended.
- Resurrection — ἀνάστασις (anastasis) — [REUSED FROM BASELINE]: পুনৰুত্থান (punoruththan). Critical risk, never পুনৰ্জন্ম. This is the doctrinal engine of the whole core passage and of the curriculum doctrine “The Living Hope of the Resurrection.”
- From the dead — ἐκ νεκρῶν (ek nekrōn); literal: out from dead ones; establishes the historical, bodily nature of the resurrection (not a metaphorical rising). Risk: Medium — must retain the concrete “from among the dead” sense, not a spiritualized reading.
1 Peter 1:4
- Inheritance — κληρονομία (klēronomia); literal: what is received by lot/allotment, an heir’s portion; semantic range: property received through kinship or covenant, applied to the believer’s eschatological reward; English variants: “inheritance,” “heritage.” Contextual meaning: a guaranteed future possession secured by adoption into God’s family (cf. Romans adoption doctrine, baseline). Assamese: উত্তৰাধিকাৰ (uttoradhikar). Risk: Medium. Straightforward legal-family term; connect explicitly to the baseline adoption doctrine (পোহাপুত্ৰ স্বৰূপে গ্ৰহণ) so readers see this as the inheritance of an adopted son, not a general spiritual reward.
- Imperishable — ἄφθαρτος (aphthartos); literal: not subject to decay/corruption; semantic range: incorruptibility, indestructibility; English variants: “imperishable,” “incorruptible,” “unperishing.” Contextual meaning: an inheritance immune to decay, contrasted with perishable earthly wealth. Assamese: অক্ষয় (okhoy). Risk: High. অক্ষয় is a Sanskrit-tatsama term also used technically in Vedantic/Gita literature for the imperishable Self (ātman) or imperishable Brahman (akṣara) — the very metaphysical category Romans’ রিসেৰেক্শন entry warns against for a different reason. A mandatory translator note must clarify that অক্ষয় here describes a concrete, personal inheritance kept by God for believers in Christ, not an impersonal imperishable cosmic substance or the soul’s own inherent indestructibility apart from Christ.
- Undefiled — ἀμίαντος (amiantos); literal: without stain, unpolluted; semantic range: moral/ritual purity; English variants: “undefiled,” “unstained,” “pure.” Assamese: নিৰ্মল (nirmol). Risk: Medium. Baseline discusses নিৰ্মল only in passing under “holy” (reserved পবিত্ৰ for the theological sense, flagging নিৰ্মল as leaning toward ritual/physical cleanliness). Here that ritual-purity connotation is actually harmless since the referent (an inheritance) is not a person needing moral holiness in the sanctification sense — but a brief note should still clarify this is not describing ritual cleanliness (śuddhi) of an object in the Hindu purity-taboo sense.
- Unfading — ἀμάραντος (amarantos); literal: not withering, from a flower that does not fade (amaranth); semantic range: permanence of beauty/vitality; English variants: “unfading,” “that will not fade away.” Assamese: অম্লান (omlan). Risk: Medium. The amaranth-flower image (a flower that never wilts, symbolically used across South Asian traditions for immortality) has some resonance with Hindu immortality imagery; keep the sense concretely tied to the inheritance “kept in heaven,” not to a philosophical immortality claim.
- Kept / reserved — τετηρημένην (tetērēmenēn), from τηρέω; literal: guarded, kept safely; contextual: passive verb showing God’s active preservation of the inheritance. Assamese: সাঁচি থোয়া (sanci thoa, “kept in store”) or ৰক্ষিত কৰি থোয়া. Risk: Low.
- In heaven(s) — ἐν οὐρανοῖς (en ouranois); Assamese: স্বৰ্গত (sworgot). Risk: Low, but note স্বৰ্গ is a shared Hindu/Christian cosmological term; context (God’s throne, Christ’s resurrection destination) sufficiently disambiguates in Christian usage.
1 Peter 1:5
- Power of God — δύναμις θεοῦ (dynamis theou) — [REUSED FROM BASELINE]: ঈশ্বৰৰ শক্তি (Iswôror xôkti). High risk per baseline; always paired with ঈশ্বৰৰ to anchor to God’s own power, not an impersonal or personified cosmic force (Shakti-worship risk noted in baseline).
- Guarded / protected — φρουρουμένους (phrouroumenous), from φρουρέω; literal: to guard as a military garrison guards a city; semantic range: protective custody, watchful defense. Assamese: ৰক্ষিত (rokhit) or সুৰক্ষিত ৰখা (protected/kept safe). Risk: Low-Medium. The military-garrison image should be preserved in commentary (God actively, vigilantly defends believers) rather than flattened to a passive “kept safe.”
- Faith — πίστις (pistis) — [REUSED FROM BASELINE]: বিশ্বাস (biswax). High risk per baseline; object here is implicitly God/Christ per the whole letter’s christocentric frame — never bhakti-devotion.
- Salvation — σωτηρία (sōtēria) — [REUSED FROM BASELINE]: পৰিত্ৰাণ (poritran). Critical risk per baseline; NEVER মুক্তি or মোক্ষ. Note here it is described as “ready to be revealed,” i.e. an already-secured future unveiling, not a progressively self-attained liberation.
- To be revealed — ἀποκαλυφθῆναι (apokalyphthēnai), from ἀποκαλύπτω; literal: to uncover, unveil; semantic range: eschatological disclosure of what already exists but is currently hidden. Assamese: প্ৰকাশিত হ’ব (prôkaxitô hôbô). Risk: Low-Medium.
- Last time — καιρῷ ἐσχάτῳ (kairō eschatō); literal: the last/final appointed time; Assamese: শেষ কালত (xex kalôtô). Risk: Low.
1 Peter 1:6
- Rejoice greatly / exult — ἀγαλλιᾶσθε (agalliasthe), from ἀγαλλιάω; literal: to leap for joy, exuberant rejoicing (stronger than χαίρω); English variants: “rejoice,” “greatly rejoice,” “exult.” Assamese: অতিশয় আনন্দ কৰা (otixôy anondô kora) — “rejoice exceedingly.” Risk: Low, but should be distinguished from mere polite happiness; this is exultant, whole-person joy grounded in the living hope, not circumstantial cheerfulness.
- Grieved — λυπηθέντες (lypēthentes), from λυπέω; literal: caused sorrow/pain; the participle acknowledges genuine present grief coexisting with the exultant joy above — a key pastoral tension in the doctrine of “Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake.” Assamese: দুখিত হৈ (dukhitô hôi). Risk: Low.
- Various trials — ποικίλοις πειρασμοῖς (poikilois peirasmois); πειρασμός literal: a testing, trial, temptation; semantic range: external hardships that test faith, or internal temptations to sin (context here is the former — persecution/hardship). English variants: “various trials,” “many kinds of trials,” “diverse temptations.” Risk: Medium. পৰীক্ষা is the ordinary Assamese word for “test/examination” and carries no automatic religious loading, but a translator note should clarify that these are God-permitted trials that refine faith toward an appointed goal (v.7), not: (a) an academic pass/fail test of merit, or (b) karmic testing understood as consequence of past-life action. This distinction becomes especially important at 4:12’s “fiery trial” (see below).
1 Peter 1:7
- Tested genuineness / proven character — δοκίμιον (dokimion); literal: the tested/proven quality of something, the result of a testing process (metallurgical assaying image); semantic range: authenticity demonstrated by trial; English variants: “genuineness,” “proven character,” “the proof of your faith.” Assamese: পৰীক্ষিত (আৰু প্ৰমাণিত) বিশ্বাস (porikkhitô aru prômanitô biswax) — “tested and proven faith.” Risk: Medium. Reuses বিশ্বাস (TM); the compound must convey that the trial does not create faith but reveals and refines its genuineness — critical for avoiding a merit-earning reading (faith proven by suffering is not faith earned by suffering).
- More precious than gold — πολυτιμότερον χρυσίου (polytimoteron chrysiou); straightforward comparison; Assamese: সোণতকৈ অধিক মূলyৱান (xonôtôkoi ôdhik mullyoban). Risk: Low.
- Tested by fire — διὰ πυρὸς… δοκιμαζομένου (dia pyros… dokimazomenou); refining-fire metallurgical metaphor, directly connected to 4:12’s πύρωσις (“fiery trial” — see Chapter 4 below); Assamese: জুইৰে পৰীক্ষা কৰা (juire porikkha kora). Risk: Medium — same “fire-trial” caution as above regarding cultural fire-ordeal associations; treat consistently with the ch.4 entry.
- Praise, glory, and honor — ἔπαινον καὶ δόξαν καὶ τιμήν (epainon kai doxan kai timēn); triad of eschatological commendation at Christ’s return. Glory = δόξα — [REUSED FROM BASELINE]: মহিমা (môhima), High risk, avoid light-imagery collision with Puranic divine-luster (tej/prabha) descriptions. Praise (ἔπαινος): Assamese প্ৰশংসা (prôxônsa), Low risk. Honor (τιμή): Assamese সমাদৰ/সম্মান (xômadôr/xômman), Low risk.
- Revelation/appearing of Jesus Christ — ἀποκάλυψις Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ (apokalypsis Iēsou Christou); literal: unveiling; here refers to Christ’s second coming. (Yisu Khristor prôkax). Risk: Low-Medium; should not be confused with “revelation” as ongoing prophetic disclosure (cf. baseline prophecy entry) — this is the specific eschatological unveiling of Christ himself.
1 Peter 1:8
- Love — ἀγαπᾶτε (agapate), from ἀγαπάω; literal: to love with committed, willed affection (agapē love, distinct from erotic or merely familial love); Assamese: প্ৰেম কৰা (prem kora). Risk: Low-Medium; standard Christian term, no significant collision, though note bhakti tradition also uses “prem” heavily for devotional love toward a chosen deity (prema-bhakti) — the object here (an unseen, historical, resurrected Christ known through apostolic testimony) should be kept explicit to avoid conflation with generalized bhakti-prema toward any ista-devata.
- Believe — πιστεύοντες (pisteuontes), from πιστεύω, cognate of πίστις (faith) — [REUSED FROM BASELINE root]: reuse বিশ্বাস root, verb form বিশ্বাস কৰা (biswax kora). High risk per baseline faith entry.
- Inexpressible and glorified joy — χαρᾷ ἀνεκλαλήτῳ καὶ δεδοξασμένῃ (chara aneklalētō kai dedoxasmenē); literal: joy unable to be spoken out, and joy that has been glorified/filled with glory. Risk: Medium. The pairing with মহিমা (glory, TM term) should be preserved deliberately — this joy is not generic happiness but joy already infused with eschatological glory, a distinctly Christian category.
1 Peter 1:9
- Obtaining / receiving — κομιζόμενοι (komizomenoi), from κομίζω; literal: to carry off for oneself, to receive as one’s due; present participle indicating a process already underway, not merely future. Assamese: লাভ কৰি থাকি (labh kôri thaki, “obtaining/receiving”). Risk: Low.
- The outcome / goal — τέλος (telos); literal: end, goal, completion; semantic range: purpose, culmination, destined result; English variants: “outcome,” “goal,” “end.” Assamese: পৰিণাম/লক্ষ্য (pôrinam/lôkkhyô). Risk: Low-Medium — should not be rendered with any term implying karmic “fruit” of accumulated action (cf. baseline’s rejection of কৰ্মফল for grace/providence); this τέλος is the promised destination of faith, graciously given, not its self-generated karmic result.
- Salvation of souls — σωτηρία ψυχῶν (sōtēria psychōn) — reuse [BASELINE] পৰিত্ৰাণ (salvation) + আত্মা/প্ৰাণ (soul/life) — Assamese: প্ৰাণৰ পৰিত্ৰাণ (pranor poritran). Risk: Critical (inherits salvation’s Critical tier). ψυχή here means the whole inner person/life, not a disembodied “soul” awaiting release from the body into an impersonal absolute — must not be read through an ātman/mokṣa lens. Note: use প্ৰাণ (life/inner being) rather than a separate metaphysical soul-substance term to avoid importing Vedantic ātman categories; পৰিত্ৰাণ itself already carries the Critical forbidden-term protection.
PART B — FULL BOOK, CHAPTER BY CHAPTER
Chapter 1 (remainder: 1:1-2, 1:10-25)
1:1-2
- Apostle — ἀπόστολος — [REUSED FROM BASELINE]: প্ৰেৰিত (prerito). Medium risk; avoid গুৰু.
- Elect / chosen exiles — ἐκλεκτοῖς παρεπιδήμοις (eklektois parepidēmois); ἐκλεκτός relates to baseline’s election doctrine (ঈশ্বৰৰ মনোনয়ন). Here used adjectivally of the recipients themselves (“elect sojourners”). Assamese: মনোনীত প্ৰবাসী (monônitô probaxi). Risk: High, inheriting election’s High tier — never fate/karma-destiny language.
- Sojourners / dispersion — παρεπιδήμοις… διασπορᾶς (parepidēmois… diasporas); literal: temporary residents of the Dispersion; this launches the letter’s dominant self-identity metaphor, resumed at 2:11. See fuller treatment there.
- Foreknowledge of God — πρόγνωσιν θεοῦ (prognōsin theou); literal: knowing beforehand; semantic range: God’s sovereign, personal advance knowledge/determination, distinct from mere prediction; English variants: “foreknowledge,” “foreordination.” Assamese: ঈশ্বৰৰ পূৰ্বজ্ঞান (Iswôror purbojnan). Risk: High. Must be distinguished from astrological foreknowledge (গণনা, already rejected for “prophecy” in the baseline) and from karma-determined destiny; this is the Father’s personal, relational foreknowledge of his own elect, not an impersonal cosmic prediction.
- Sanctification of the Spirit — ἁγιασμῷ πνεύματος — [REUSED FROM BASELINE]: পবিত্ৰীকৰণ (pobitrikoron) + পবিত্ৰ আত্মা (Holy Spirit). High risk per baseline.
- Obedience and sprinkling with the blood of Jesus Christ — ὑπακοὴν καὶ ῥαντισμὸν αἵματος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ (hypakoēn kai rantismon haimatos Iēsou Christou). Obedience (ὑπακοή) relates to baseline’s obedience_of_faith (বিশ্বাসৰ আজ্ঞাকাৰিতা) though here used absolutely; Assamese: আজ্ঞাকাৰিতা (agyakarita). Risk: High, per baseline. Sprinkling of blood (ῥαντισμός) is a NEW term alluding to the Sinai covenant-ratification ceremony (Exodus 24:8) and to Christ’s atoning blood. Assamese: তেজ ছটিওৱা (tez sôtiowa). Risk: High. Blood ritual imagery risks collision with animal blood-sacrifice traditions prominent in Assam’s Shakta worship (notably at Kamakhya temple), where blood offerings appease a deity. A mandatory translator note must clarify this is a one-time covenant-ratifying and cleansing application of Christ’s own blood, not a repeated propitiatory blood offering made by worshippers to a deity.
1:10-12 — Prophets, Spirit of Christ, glories, angels
- Prophets / prophesied — προφῆται (prophētai) — [REUSED FROM BASELINE]: ভাববাদী (bhabôbadi), ভাববাণী (bhabôbani). Low risk per baseline.
- Spirit of Christ — πνεῦμα Χριστοῦ (pneuma Christou); ties πবিত্ৰ আত্মা (Holy Spirit, Critical baseline term) explicitly to Christ, affirming the Spirit’s role in inspiring OT prophecy of Christ’s sufferings and glories. Assamese: খ্ৰীষ্টৰ আত্মা (Khristor atma). Risk: High — should be understood as the same personal, divine পবিত্ৰ আত্মা, not a distinct “spirit-of” force.
- Sufferings of Christ and subsequent glories — τὰ εἰς Χριστὸν παθήματα καὶ τὰς μετὰ ταῦτα δόξας (ta eis Christon pathēmata kai tas meta tauta doxas). Introduces the suffering-then-glory pattern (κ, doctrine of Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering, and Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake) that structures the whole letter. Sufferings (πάθημα): Assamese দুখ-কষ্ট/যাতনা (dukh-koxtô/jatôna) — see fuller treatment at 2:21ff and 3:18ff. Glories (δόξας) reuses মহিমা (TM). Risk: High.
- Angels long to look into — ἄγγελοι ἐπιθυμοῦσιν… κατανοῆσαι (angeloi epithymousin… katanoēsai); Assamese: দূতবিলাক (dutbilak). Risk: Low-Medium; see fuller angelology treatment at 3:22.
1:13-21 — Holiness, ransomed, foreknown Lamb, faith and hope in God
- Set your hope fully — ἐλπίσατε (elpisate), cognate with 1:3’s ἐλπίς; reuse জীৱন্ত আশা root, verb আশা কৰা.
- Obedient children, not conformed to former passions/ignorance — τέκνα ὑπακοῆς… ἐπιθυμίαις (tekna hypakoēs); reuse আজ্ঞাকাৰী সন্তান (obedient children) + আজ্ঞাকাৰিতা (baseline obedience term). Risk: Medium.
- Be holy, for I am holy — ἅγιοι γενήθητε ὅτι ἐγὼ ἅγιος (hagioi genēthēte hoti egō hagios) — [REUSED FROM BASELINE]: পবিত্ৰ (pobitrô), quoting Leviticus. High risk per baseline; central to the curriculum doctrine “Holiness in Conduct.”
- Conduct / way of life — ἀναστροφή (anastrophē); literal: turning about, manner of life/behavior; semantic range: one’s whole habitual pattern of living, visible to observers; English variants: “conduct,” “behavior,” “way of life.” Assamese: আচাৰ-ব্যৱহাৰ (acar-byôbôhar). Risk: Medium. আচাৰ can also denote prescribed ritual custom/rite in Assamese Hindu usage (আচাৰ-অনুষ্ঠান, “rites and customs”); a translator note should clarify that ἀναστροφή names the whole pattern of moral behavior flowing from new birth, not adherence to a customary ritual code.
- Ransomed — ἐλυτρώθητε (elytrōthēte), from λυτρόω; literal: to release by paying a ransom price (lytron); semantic range: liberation achieved through a substitutionary price, as in slave-manumission or captive-ransom; English variants: “ransomed,” “redeemed,” “bought back.” Risk: High/Critical. NEVER render with any word built on the মুক্তি root (already Critical-forbidden for “salvation,” denoting liberation from সংসাৰ) — the surface-parallel concept (“being freed”) makes this an easy trap. উদ্ধাৰ (rescue/deliverance) is the safe root; always pair with মূল্য দি (by paying a price) to preserve the substitutionary-ransom sense against the perishable-inheritance contrast (v.18, “not with perishable things like silver or gold”).
- Precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot — τιμίῳ αἵματι… ὡς ἀμνοῦ ἀμώμου καὶ ἀσπίλου Χριστοῦ (timiō haimati… hōs amnou amōmou kai aspilou Christou). Precious blood: Assamese মূল্যবান তেজ (mullyoban tez). Lamb without blemish or spot: Assamese Risk: Critical. This is the doctrine of Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering condensed into a single image, drawing on the Passover lamb (Exodus 12) and Isaiah 53’s sacrificial lamb typology. Two risks converge: (1) blood-ritual collision with Shakta animal sacrifice (as above); (2) the Assamese Vaishnavite tradition’s own extensive Krishna-as-cowherd/pastoral imagery could create false resonance unless the once-for-all, substitutionary, sin-bearing nature of this sacrifice is made explicit in a mandatory translator note, distinguishing it from any ongoing ritual bali offering or from generic pastoral imagery devoid of atonement.
- Foreknown before the foundation of the world — προεγνωσμένου (proegnōsmenou), cognate with 1:2’s πρόγνωσις; reuse পূৰ্বজ্ঞান root — here applied to Christ himself (his foreordained role in redemption), not to the elect. Risk: High, same rationale as above.
- Faith and hope are in God — πίστιν καὶ ἐλπίδα εἰς θεόν (pistin kai elpida eis theon); confirms বিশ্বাস and আশা must always terminate on ঈশ্বৰ/যীচু, never a devotional object interchangeable with any ista-devata.
1:22-25 — Purified souls, brotherly love, born again through the living word
- Purified souls / sincere brotherly love — ἡγνικότες… φιλαδελφίαν ἀνυπόκριτον (hēgnikotes… philadelphian anypokriton). Purified (ἁγνίζω) Assamese: শুচি কৰা (xuci kora) — note: this is one of the rare contexts where শুচি is doctrinally appropriate, since it describes obedience-produced moral purification of the inner life (v.22, “having purified your souls by obedience to the truth”), not ritual purity; still flag Medium risk for clarity against ritual-purity readings. Risk: Low-Medium.
- Born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God — ἀναγεγεννημένοι… Reuses নতুনকৈ জন্ম দিয়া (Critical, see 1:3 above — NEVER পুনৰ্জন্ম). Imperishable seed — σπορᾶς ἀφθάρτου: Assamese অক্ষয় বীজ (okhoy bij); same অক্ষয় caution as v.4 above (High risk, Vedantic akṣara collision — mandatory note). Living and abiding word of God — λόγου ζῶντος θεοῦ καὶ μένοντος: Assamese ঈশ্বৰৰ জীৱন্ত আৰু স্থায়ী বাক্য (Iswôror jibonto aru sthayi bakyô). Risk: Medium-High; ঈশ্বৰৰ বাক্য (Word of God) should be distinguished from a mantra’s inherent śabda-power in Vedic/Tantric theology — the living word here is personal divine communication (paired with 1:12’s gospel proclamation), not an impersonal sonic/ritual force.
Chapter 2
2:1-3
Risk: Low; no significant syncretism risk, straightforward ethical vocabulary.
- Pure spiritual milk — τὸ λογικὸν ἄδολον γάλα (to logikon adolon gala); literal: the word-ish/rational, unadulterated milk; semantic range: the pure teaching/word of God as spiritual nourishment for new believers, echoing “newborn” imagery from 1:23’s new birth. Risk: Medium; nursing/milk imagery is culturally universal and low-collision, but should be tied back explicitly to “the word” (λόγος) to avoid a vague generic “spiritual food” reading disconnected from Scripture.
2:4-8 — Living stone, cornerstone, stumbling stone
- Living stone — λίθος ζῶν (lithos zōn); literal: a stone that lives; semantic range: a Christological title drawn from Psalm 118:22 and Isaiah 28:16, describing Christ as the foundation of a spiritual temple, paradoxically alive. English variants: “living stone.” Assamese: জীৱন্ত শিল (jibonto xil). Risk: Critical. This is the single highest new syncretism risk in 1 Peter: Assamese Vaishnavite/Ekasarana devotional practice includes reverence for the Shaligram — a specific stone venerated as a manifestation/embodiment of Vishnu. “Living stone” describing Christ could be assimilated to stone-deity veneration rather than understood as a metaphor for Christ as the church’s foundational, life-giving cornerstone. A mandatory translator note distinguishing this metaphorical, foundational Christological image from any physical venerated stone-object must accompany every occurrence.
- Rejected by men but chosen and precious in God’s sight — ἀποδεδοκιμασμένον… ἐκλεκτὸν ἔντιμον (apodedokimasmenon… eklekton entimon); reuse মনোনীত (chosen/elect, High risk per election doctrine). Assamese for “rejected”: অগ্রাহ্য কৰা (ôgrahyô kora). Risk: High.
- Cornerstone / chief cornerstone — ἀκρογωνιαῖος (akrogōniaios) (Isaiah 28:16); Assamese: কোণৰ প্ৰধান শিল (kônor prôdhan xil). Risk: High, tied to baseline’s fulfillment_of_prophecy and messianic_promise doctrines (Critical) — must be presented as linear OT-to-NT fulfillment, not cyclical dharma-restoration.
- Stone of stumbling and rock of offense — λίθος προσκόμματος καὶ πέτρα σκανδάλου (lithos proskommatos kai petra skandalou) (Isaiah 8:14); Assamese: উজুকি খাইছুৱা শিল আৰু বিঘিনিৰ শিল (ujuki khaisuwa xil aru bighinir xil). Risk: Medium-High; theological point (Christ divides believing response from unbelieving rejection) must be preserved without softening.
2:9-10 — Chosen race, royal priesthood, holy nation, God’s own possession
- Chosen race / people — γένος ἐκλεκτόν (genos eklekton); reuse মনোনীত (elect, High risk baseline). Assamese: মনোনীত জাতি? — CAUTION: see note on জাতি below; prefer মনোনীত সমাজ/লোকসমূহ (monônitô xômaj/loksômuh) to avoid the caste-connotation of জাতি.
- Royal priesthood — βασίλειον ἱεράτευμα (basileion hierateuma) (Exodus 19:6); literal: kingly priesthood; semantic range: a priestly community that also shares in royal dignity, applied corporately to all believers, not a specialized priestly class. Risk: Critical. পুৰোহিত (purohit) in Assamese denotes specifically the Brahmin ritual-priest caste — a hereditary, exclusive social-religious office at the top of a caste hierarchy still socially operative in Assam. Rendering “royal priesthood” with পুৰোহিত risks one of two opposite errors: either (a) implying believers now occupy the Brahmin-priest social role/caste, or (b) being read by non-Brahmin/tribal-background believers as an exclusive status unavailable to them. A mandatory translator note must state explicitly that 1 Peter 2:9 abolishes any exclusive priestly caste mediation — EVERY believer, regardless of caste, tribal, or social origin, is constituted a priest through union with Christ (echoing Romans’ unity_of_jews_and_gentiles doctrine, which this passage extends into ecclesiology). This is a direct doctrinal challenge to caste-based spiritual hierarchy and must not be softened.
- Holy nation — ἔθνος ἅγιον (ethnos hagion) (Exodus 19:6); reuse পবিত্ৰ (holy, High risk baseline). Assamese rendering of ἔθνος here: CAUTION — the natural Assamese gloss জাতি (jati) is also the standard South Asian term for “caste.” Rendering “holy nation” as পবিত্ৰ জাতি risks being heard as “a holy caste,” reinforcing rather than dissolving caste categorization. Recommended: পবিত্ৰ প্ৰজা (pobitrô prôja, “holy people/subjects [of God]”) or পবিত্ৰ সম্প্ৰদায় (pobitrô sômprôday, “holy community”) — both avoid জাতি. Risk: Critical, with mandatory translator note explaining the deliberate avoidance of জাতি and clarifying this is a transcendent covenant identity that relativizes, not reinforces, caste/ethnic categories.
- A people for his own possession — λαὸς εἰς περιποίησιν (laos eis peripoiēsin); literal: a people acquired/gained as one’s own; semantic range: covenant ownership language (Exodus 19:5, Malachi 3:17). (Iswôror sôkiyô prôja). Risk: High; distinguish covenant ownership by the one true God from a deity’s devotee-community (praja of an iṣṭa-devatā) within Ekasarana bhakti structures — the ownership here is unique and exclusive, grounded in redemption (2:9’s “that you may proclaim…”), not a chosen devotional allegiance among several available.
- Once no people… now God’s people; had not received mercy… now received mercy — reuses কৃপা/অনুগ্ৰহ root; straightforward, Low-Medium risk.
2:11-12 — Sojourners and exiles
- Sojourners and exiles — παροίκους καὶ παρεπιδήμους (paroikous kai parepidēmous); literal: those who dwell alongside (resident aliens) and those who lodge temporarily (visiting foreigners); semantic range: legal-social status of a non-citizen resident; resumes 1:1’s identity language. English variants: “sojourners and exiles,” “aliens and strangers,” “foreigners and exiles.” Risk: Medium. Central to Christian identity-in-the-world theology; note this describes present temporary status en route to the inheritance (1:4), not a low social/legal caste status nor a literal migrant-labor identity (relevant given Assam’s own significant internal-migration and citizenship-politics context) — the metaphor is theological, not a comment on any believer’s actual civic status.
- Abstain from the passions of the flesh — ἀπέχεσθαι τῶν σαρκικῶν ἐπιθυμιῶν (apechesthai tōn sarkikōn epithymiōn); Assamese: মাংসিক অভিলাষৰ পৰা বিৰত থকা (mangxik ôbhilaxôr pora birôtô thôka). Risk: Medium; should not be flattened into general ascetic renunciation (tapasya/vairāgya) practiced for merit — this is Spirit-empowered holiness of conduct (আচাৰ-ব্যৱহাৰ, see 1:15 above), not merit-earning self-denial.
2:13-17 — Submission to authority, honor the emperor
- Be subject to every human institution — ὑποτάγητε πάσῃ ἀνθρωπίνῃ κτίσει (hypotagēte pasē anthrōpinē ktisei); ὑποτάσσω literal: to arrange/rank under, place in subjection; semantic range: voluntary ordering of oneself under an authority, not necessarily coerced subjugation; English variants: “submit,” “be subject to,” “be subordinate to.” Assamese: অধীন হ’ব (odhin hôbô). Risk: Medium-High. Central to the curriculum doctrine “Submission to Authority and Christlike Endurance.” Must be distinguished from fatalistic passive resignation to one’s station (a common folk-Hindu reading of duty/destiny, দৈব/ভাগ্য) — this is a free, gospel-motivated act “for the Lord’s sake” (v.13), modeled ultimately on Christ’s own voluntary submission to unjust suffering (2:21-23), not resigned acceptance of an unchangeable fate.
- Honor the emperor / king — τὸν βασιλέα τιμᾶτε (ton basilea timate); Assamese: ৰজাক সমাদৰ কৰা (rôjak xômadôr kora). Risk: Medium. Given Assam’s history of contested regional sovereignty (the historic Ahom kingdom, already flagged in the baseline’s kingdom_of_god entry), care should be taken that honoring civil authority is not read as endorsing any particular political sovereignty claim, ancient or contemporary; the point is submission to legitimate civil order in general, alongside the higher, prior “fear God” (v.17).
- Freedom / free — ἐλεύθεροι (eleutheroi); Assamese: স্বাধীন (swadhinô). Risk: Medium-High; must be distinguished from মুক্তি/মোক্ষ (liberation from সংসাৰ, Critical-forbidden elsewhere) — this is freedom exercised as service to God (v.16), a relational-ethical freedom, not metaphysical liberation from bondage to material existence.
2:18-20 — Servants, suffering unjustly
- Servants / household servants — οἰκέται (oiketai); Assamese: গৃহদাস (grihôdas) or সেৱক (xewôk). Risk: Low-Medium.
- Suffer while doing good, this is a gracious thing — πάσχων ἀγαθοποιῶν… τοῦτο χάρις (paschōn agathopoiōn… touto charis); reuse অনুগ্ৰহ (grace, High risk baseline) applied unusually to human endurance being “gracious/commendable” before God — flag for translator note that this is a different, though related, sense from grace-as-unmerited-salvific-favor; here it names something praiseworthy/commendable in God’s sight. Risk: Medium.
2:21-25 — Christ’s example, substitutionary suffering, wounds healed, Shepherd/Overseer
- Christ also suffered for you, leaving an example — Χριστὸς ἔπαθεν ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν, ὑπολιμπάνων ὑπογραμμόν (Christos epathen hyper hymōn, hypolimpanōn hypogrammon); ὑπέρ (hyper, “on behalf of/for the sake of”) is the key substitutionary preposition recurring through the letter’s atonement language (also 3:18). Assamese rendering of “suffered for”: আমাৰ কাৰণে/সলনি কষ্ট ভোগ কৰিলে (amar karône/sôlôni koxtô bhog korile). Risk: Critical. This is the doctrinal core of “Christ’s Substitutionary Suffering.” The Greek ὑπέρ must be rendered so as to convey substitution/benefit (“in place of,” “for the sake of”), not mere accompaniment (“suffered along with/near you”). Example (ὑπογραμμός, literally a “copy-line” for a child learning to write) — Assamese: আৰ্হি (arhi, “model/pattern”). Risk: Low, but should be kept subordinate to the substitutionary sense — Christ is example AND substitute, not example only (a reduction some moralizing readings risk).
- He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree — αὐτὸς ἀνήνεγκεν… ἐπὶ τὸ ξύλον (autos anēnegken… tas hamartias hēmōn… epi to xylon); ἀναφέρω here carries sacrificial “bearing up” sense (cf. Isaiah 53:4,12 LXX). Risk: Critical; reuse পাপ (sin, baseline High). This is substitutionary penal-bearing language, not karmic burden-transfer (though a superficial resonance exists with some bhakti notions of a guru/deity absorbing a devotee’s karmic debt) — a translator note distinguishing Christ’s unique, once-for-all, sin-bearing atoning death from any ongoing karma-transfer relationship is warranted.
- By his wounds you have been healed — τῷ μώλωπι… Risk: High; primarily refers to healing from sin’s power/guilt (spiritual healing) in this context, though the image draws on physical wound-healing — should not be flattened into a promise of physical healing detached from the sin-bearing atonement context, nor conflated with health-and-prosperity teaching.
- Straying sheep… now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls — πλανώμενοι… Risk: Medium-High; establishes the Christological title resumed at 5:4’s “chief Shepherd,” anchoring the ch.5 elders/humility doctrine in Christ’s own pastoral headship.
Chapter 3
3:1-6 — Wives, submission, inner adornment
- Submit — ὑποτάγητε (hypotagēte); reuse ὑποτάσσω root from 2:13 (odhin hôbô). Risk: Medium-High, same doctrinal caution as above; here applied within marriage. Pastoral care needed to distinguish willing, gospel-shaped submission from coerced subjugation or social devaluation; commentary should note the passage’s own framing (v.7, “joint heirs of the grace of life”) as counterbalance.
- Imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit — τὸ ἄφθαρτον τοῦ ἡσυχίου καὶ πραέος πνεύματος (to aphtharton tou hēsychiou kai praeos pneumatos); reuse অক্ষয় (imperishable, High risk, same Vedantic-akṣara caution as 1:4). Assamese for “gentle and quiet spirit”: মৃদু আৰু শান্ত মন (mridu aru xantô môn); note শান্ত (peaceful) here uses a term related to but distinct from baseline’s শান্তি (peace, Medium risk) — low collision risk in this adjectival use.
3:7 — Husbands, weaker vessel
- Weaker vessel — τὸ ἀσθενεστέρῳ σκεύει (tō asthenesterō skeuei); literal: the weaker vessel/instrument; Assamese: দুৰ্বল পাত্ৰ (durbôl patrô). Risk: Medium; pastoral-cultural sensitivity required — the term describes (likely) relative physical strength or social vulnerability in a first-century household context, immediately qualified by “joint heirs of the grace of life,” i.e. full spiritual equality (গ্ৰেইস, অনুগ্ৰহ, TM). Must not be rendered/taught in a way that implies spiritual or moral inferiority.
3:8-12 — Unity, sympathy, blessing not reviling
- Virtue cluster: ὁμόφρονες (of one mind) — একমন (ekmôn); συμπαθεῖς (sympathetic) — সমবেদনাশীল (xômobedônaxil); φιλάδελφοι (loving as brothers) — ভাই-প্ৰেমী (bhai-premi); εὔσπλαγχνοι (tenderhearted) — কৰুণাময় (korunamôy); ταπεινόφρονες (humble-minded) — নম্ৰ (nômrô, anticipating ch.5’s নম্ৰতা). Risk: Low-Medium across the set; standard virtue vocabulary, no major collision, though নম্ৰ/নম্ৰতা should be tracked consistently into ch.5’s humility doctrine.
- Not repaying evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but blessing — μὴ ἀποδιδόντες κακὸν ἀντὶ κακοῦ ἢ λοιδορίαν ἀντὶ λοιδορίας, τοὐναντίον δὲ εὐλογοῦντες (mē apodidontes kakon anti kakou…); bless (εὐλογέω) — Assamese: আশীৰ্বাদ কৰা (axirbad kora). Risk: Low-Medium; standard term, though note আশীৰ্বাদ is also the common word for a guru’s or elder’s ritual blessing in Hindu practice — here it names verbal goodwill/prayer for one’s persecutors, consistent with, not borrowed from, that cultural practice; no strong collision.
3:13-17 — Suffering for righteousness’ sake
- If you should suffer for righteousness’ sake — εἰ καὶ πάσχοιτε διὰ δικαιοσύνην (ei kai paschoite dia dikaiosynēn); reuse ধাৰ্মিকতা (righteousness — [REUSED FROM BASELINE], Critical risk, NEVER ধৰ্ম) + দুখ-কষ্ট (suffering). This verse names the curriculum doctrine “Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake” directly. Risk: Critical (inherits righteousness’ Critical tier, compounded by the suffering-for-doctrine’s own High risk against karma-suffering readings — see 4:12-19 below for full treatment).
- Have no fear of them, nor be troubled — τὸν φόβον αὐτῶν μὴ φοβηθῆτε μηδὲ ταραχθῆτε (ton phobon autōn mē phobēthēte mēde tarachthēte); Assamese: তাক ভয় নকৰিব, বিচলিত নহ’ব (tak bhôy nôkôribô, bicôlitô nôhôbô). Risk: Low-Medium.
- Sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts — κύριον δὲ τὸν Χριστὸν ἁγιάσατε ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν (kyrion de ton Christon hagiasate en tais kardiais hymōn); reuse প্ৰভু (Lord — [REUSED FROM BASELINE], Critical) + পবিত্ৰ root (sanctify). Risk: Critical; direct parallel to Romans 10:9’s already-fixed confession — the exclusive Lordship of Christ, “set apart” internally as supreme, is at stake here.
- With gentleness and respect, having a good conscience — μετὰ πραΰτητος καὶ φόβου, συνείδησιν ἀγαθήν (meta prautētos kai phobou, syneidēsin agathēn). Conscience (συνείδησις): Assamese বিবেক (bibek). Risk: Low-Medium; standard term for the moral faculty, no significant collision, though the phrase “good conscience” recurs at 3:21 in the baptism passage (see below) and should be rendered identically both places.
3:18-22 — Christ’s Proclamation to the Spirits (full curriculum doctrine treatment)
- Christ suffered once for sins — Χριστὸς ἅπαξ περὶ ἁμαρτιῶν ἔπαθεν (Christos hapax peri hamartiōn epathen); ἅπαξ literal: once, one single time, never to be repeated. Risk: Critical. ἅπαξ (“once for all”) is the linchpin distinguishing biblical atonement from any repeatable ritual sacrifice cycle (bali, homa/fire offerings performed periodically) or from Krishna’s own repeatable avatar-descents (already the single highest incarnation risk per baseline). A mandatory translator note must state that Christ’s suffering “once” is unrepeatable and fully sufficient, unlike cyclical ritual offerings or repeated divine descents.
- The righteous for the unrighteous — δίκαιος ὑπὲρ ἀδίκων (dikaios hyper adikōn); reuse ধাৰ্মিকতা root (righteous — cognate of TM righteousness) + ὑπέρ substitutionary preposition (see 2:21 above). Risk: Critical, substitution doctrine again.
- Put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit — θανατωθεὶς σαρκὶ ζωοποιηθεὶς πνεύματι (thanatōtheis sarki zōopoiētheis pneumati); a notoriously debated construction (referring either to Christ’s own resurrection-state existence, or to the mode of his proclamation). Risk: Critical; interpretive ambiguity itself must be flagged for human theologian review rather than resolved unilaterally by the translator — do not let the Assamese rendering silently foreclose either major interpretive option.
- Proclaimed / preached (to the spirits in prison) — ἐκήρυξεν (ekēryxen), from κηρύσσω; literal: to herald/proclaim as a herald announces a king’s message; semantic range shared with baseline’s gospel/mission proclamation vocabulary, though NOT necessarily “gospel” (εὐαγγέλιον) here — the content of this proclamation is debated (a declaration of triumph/judgment, not necessarily an evangelistic offer). Assamese: প্ৰচাৰ কৰিলে (prôcar korile). Risk: Critical; must not automatically be equated with সুসমাচাৰ প্ৰচাৰ (gospel proclamation, baseline mission term) without qualification, since the theological content and recipients of this specific proclamation are contested among interpreters; flag explicitly for human theologian review, and avoid a translation choice that presumes an evangelistic-offer reading.
- Spirits in prison — τοῖς ἐν φυλακῇ πνεύμασιν (tois en phylakē pneumasin); Assamese: বন্দী আত্মা (bôndi atma). Risk: Critical; πνεῦμα here likely refers to disembodied spirits (possibly fallen angelic beings per some interpreters, or the disobedient dead of Noah’s generation per others), NOT to পবিত্ৰ আত্মা (Holy Spirit) nor to ancestral spirits in the sense familiar from Assamese folk-animist or tribal ancestor-veneration practice. A mandatory translator note must clarify আত্মা here does not refer to ancestor spirits requiring propitiation, ghosts, or a general class of departed souls awaiting rebirth, but to a specific, historically-located group tied to Noah’s generation (or to fallen angelic powers, per the interpretive note above).
- Who formerly did not obey, when God’s patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared — ἀπειθήσασίν ποτε… ἐν ἡμέραις Νῶε κατασκευαζομένης κιβωτοῦ (apeithēsasin pote… en hēmerais Nōe kataskeuazomenēs kibōtou); Noah (Νῶε): Assamese established form নোহ (Noh). Ark (κιβωτός): Assamese জাহাজ/নাও — established Assamese Bible term likely জাহাজ (jahaj) or the more specific নৌকা (nouka); recommend জাহাজ (following common Bible Society usage for Noah’s ark). Risk: Medium; requires OT narrative background note (Genesis 6-9) for readers with low OT literacy, per the AI requirements’ target audience assumption.
- Brought safely through water — διεσώθησαν διʼ ὕδατος (diesōthēsan di’ hydatos); cognate of σωτηρία (salvation, baseline Critical) — Assamese: পানীৰে সিচু হৈ ৰক্ষা পালে (paniôre sicu hôi rôkkha pale). Risk: High; physical rescue-through-water here typologically prefigures spiritual পৰিত্ৰাণ (salvation) via baptism in the next clause — the type/antitype relationship must be preserved, not collapsed into equating floodwater itself with salvation.
- Baptism — βάπτισμα (baptisma); established Christian transliterated term. Assamese: বাপ্তিস্ম (baptisôm). Risk: Medium; the passage explicitly clarifies baptism saves “not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience” — this qualifying clause must be preserved in full to prevent a reading of baptism as a ritual-purification washing (a genuine risk given Assam’s variety of ritual water-purification practices, e.g. sacred river bathing) rather than a Spirit-worked, resurrection-grounded pledge/appeal.
- Antitype — ἀντίτυπον (antitypon); literal: the corresponding “strike” or impression to an original type/pattern; semantic range: a NT reality that fulfills/corresponds to an OT foreshadowing pattern (τύπος). Assamese: প্ৰতিচ্ছবি/সাদৃশ্য (prôtiсchôbi/xadrixyô) or explanatory phrase যাৰ পূৰ্বচিহ্ন আছিল (“of which this was the foreshadowing”). Risk: Medium; a genuinely difficult technical term requiring an explanatory gloss rather than a single word, similar to justification’s compound-phrase treatment in the baseline.
- Appeal/pledge of a good conscience — συνειδήσεως ἀγαθῆς ἐρώτημα (syneidēseōs agathēs erōtēma); reuse বিবেক (conscience, from 3:16) + Assamese for “appeal/pledge”: মিনতি/প্ৰতিজ্ঞা (minôti/prôtijna). Risk: Medium.
- Through the resurrection of Jesus Christ — δι᾽ ἀναστάσεως Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ — [REUSED FROM BASELINE]: পুনৰুত্থান. Critical risk, NEVER পুনৰ্জন্ম.
- Gone into heaven, angels, authorities, and powers subjected to him — πορευθεὶς εἰς οὐρανόν, ὑποταγέντων αὐτῷ ἀγγέλων καὶ ἐξουσιῶν καὶ δυνάμεων (poreutheis eis ouranon, hypotagentōn autō angelōn kai exousiōn kai dynameōn); angels (ἄγγελοι): Assamese দূত (dut). Authorities (ἐξουσίαι): Assamese ক্ষমতাসমূহ (kôkhômota-somuh). Powers (δυνάμεις): reuse শক্তি-root but pluralized as created cosmic powers, distinct from ঈশ্বৰৰ শক্তি (God’s own power, baseline). Assamese: শক্তিসমূহ. Risk: High. All three categories are here explicitly SUBJECTED to the ascended Christ — this must be rendered so that Christ’s supremacy over every spiritual power is unambiguous, not read as Christ being merely one powerful being among a cosmic hierarchy of gods/demigods (a devas/asuras-type cosmological reading common in Puranic literature). A translator note reinforcing Christ’s unique supremacy (echoing baseline’s lordship_of_christ Critical doctrine) is warranted at this verse.
Chapter 4
4:1-6 — Suffering ends sin’s rule, judge the living and dead, gospel to the dead
- Since Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking — Χριστοῦ οὖν παθόντος σαρκὶ καὶ ὑμεῖς τὴν αὐτὴν ἔννοιαν ὁπλίσασθε (Christou oun pathontos sarki…); reuse দুখ-কষ্ট (suffering) root; military “arm yourselves” image — Assamese: সাজু হৈ থকা (saju hôi thôka). Risk: Medium.
- Whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin — reuse পাপ (sin, baseline High) + দুখ-কষ্ট. Theological point: suffering, when embraced in union with Christ, breaks the old pattern of sinning — Risk Medium-High, should not be read as suffering itself being meritorious/purifying in a karmic sense (suffering “burning off” bad karma) — the causal logic here is union with Christ’s death to sin, not suffering-as-merit.
- Live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God — reuse (Iswôror iccha). Risk: Low-Medium.
- They will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead — κρίναι ζῶντας καὶ νεκρούς (krinai zōntas kai nekrous); Assamese: জীৱা আৰু মৰা সকলৰ বিচাৰ কৰিব (jiwa aru mora xôkôlôr bicar koribô). Risk: High. Personal, moral, final judgment by Christ must be clearly distinguished from impersonal automatic karma-phala (the fruit of one’s own accumulated deeds ripening across lifetimes without a personal Judge) — a distinction the baseline already draws for providence/election. A translator note is warranted given how deeply the karma-retribution framework structures folk-Hindu explanations of moral consequence in Assam.
- The gospel was preached even to the dead — εὐηγγελίσθη καὶ νεκροῖς (euēngelisthē kai nekrois); reuse সুসমাচাৰ (gospel, baseline High) — verb form সুসমাচাৰ প্ৰচাৰ কৰা হৈছিল. Risk: High; this verse is exegetically contested (referring either to the spiritually dead who heard and believed while physically alive, or to a proclamation associated with 3:19’s spirits) — flag explicitly for human theologian review; do not let the Assamese phrasing presume one interpretation over the other without a translator note documenting the ambiguity.
4:7-11 — End at hand, love covers sins, stewards of grace
- The end of all things is at hand — πάντων δὲ τὸ τέλος ἤγγικεν (pantōn de to telos ēngiken); reuse টেলোস/পৰিণাম root (cf. 1:9). Risk: Low-Medium.
- Love covers a multitude of sins — ἀγάπη καλύπτει πλῆθος ἁμαρτιῶν (agapē kalyptei plēthos hamartiōn); reuse প্ৰেম (love) + পাপ (sin, baseline High). Risk: Medium; should not be misread as love “atoning for” sin in a way that competes with Christ’s substitutionary atonement (2:24, 3:18) — this is about relational forbearance/forgiveness among believers, not a rival atonement mechanism.
- Stewards of God’s varied grace — οἰκονόμοι… Risk: Medium; ভাণ্ডাৰী (steward/treasurer) is a safe, non-syncretic term. Ties directly to the curriculum’s spiritual_gifts doctrine (baseline আত্মিক বৰ) — spiritual gifts here are explicitly grace-administration, not merit-earned boons.
4:12-19 — Fiery trial, sharing Christ’s sufferings, judgment on God’s household, faithful Creator
- Do not be surprised at the fiery trial — μὴ ξενίζεσθε τῇ ἐν ὑμῖν πυρώσει (mē xenizesthe tē en hymin pyrōsei); πύρωσις literal: a burning, a refining/smelting process (cognate with 1:7’s πυρός). Assamese: অগ্নি-সদৃশ পৰীক্ষা (ôgni-sôdrixô porikkha, “fire-like trial”) or জুইৰ নিচিনা পৰীক্ষা. Risk: High. The direct literal calque অগ্নি পৰীক্ষা (agni pariksha) should be used only with great caution: this exact phrase is the established Assamese/Hindi term for the mythological “trial by fire” undergone by Sita in the Ramayana to prove her purity — a specific, widely-known narrative association that could unintentionally import that story’s associations (chastity-proof, divine ordeal to satisfy public doubt) into 1 Peter’s very different point (God refining genuine faith through suffering, resulting in future glory, v.13). A mandatory translator note flagging this specific Ramayana association is required wherever this phrase occurs.
- Rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings — καθὸ κοινωνεῖτε τοῖς τοῦ Χριστοῦ παθήμασιν χαίρετε (katho koinōneite tois tou Christou pathēmasin chairete); κοινωνέω cognate with baseline’s fellowship (সহভাগিতা, Low risk) — here verb form: সহভাগী হোৱা (xohobhagi howa). Risk: Medium-High; positive participation in Christ’s own sufferings (not merely generic hardship) — should be tied explicitly to Christ, not generalized into “suffering builds character” moralism.
- When his glory is revealed — ἐν τῇ ἀποκαλύψει τῆς δόξης αὐτοῦ (en tē apokalypsei tēs doxas autou); reuse মহিমা (glory, baseline High) + প্ৰকাশ (revealed). Risk: Medium.
- Suffer as a Christian, not as a murderer, thief, or evildoer / as a busybody — reuse দুখ-কষ্ট; introduces the specifically named identity Christian (Χριστιανός) — Assamese: খ্ৰীষ্টিয়ান (established transliterated Assamese Christian self-designation). Risk: Low; note the distinction the verse itself draws between suffering for righteousness (commendable) versus suffering as just criminal punishment (not commendable) — this distinction must be preserved to keep “Suffering for Righteousness’ Sake” from becoming a blanket justification for any and all hardship.
- Judgment begins with the household of God — ἄρχεται τὸ κρίμα ἀπὸ τοῦ οἴκου τοῦ θεοῦ (archetai to krima apo tou oikou tou theou); Assamese: বিচাৰ ঈশ্বৰৰ পৰিয়ালৰ পৰাই আৰম্भ হয় (bicar Iswôror pôriyalôr porai arômbhô hôy). Risk: High; household of God (ὁ οἶκος τοῦ θεοῦ) — reuse পৰিয়াল, resonating deliberately with the baseline’s adoption doctrine (ঈশ্বৰৰ পৰিয়ালত পোহাপুত্ৰ স্বৰূপে গ্ৰহণ) — this is the church as God’s adopted family, not an institutional structure modeled on Satra/Namghar governance; a brief note distinguishing this pastoral-family image from those specific Ekasarana institutions is warranted, consistent with baseline’s church entry.
- Entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good — παρατιθέσθωσαν τὰς ψυχὰς αὐτῶν… Risk: Medium. Note: the baseline’s father entry rejects সৃষ্টিকৰ্তা as an alternative rendering of “Father” (to avoid collapsing God’s personal fatherhood into a merely impersonal creator-principle); here, however, the Greek text itself names God specifically in his role as Creator (κτίστης), so সৃষ্টিকৰ্তা is the correct and intended sense, not a substitution for another term. A brief note should record this distinction for consistency across documents: সৃষ্টিকৰ্তা is reserved for contexts (like this one) that explicitly speak of God’s creative role, never as a general substitute for পিতা (Father).
Chapter 5
5:1-5 — Elders, shepherd the flock, chief Shepherd, crown of glory, humility
- Elders — πρεσβυτέρους (presbyterous); literal: older men/elders; semantic range: an official local church leadership office, by extension of age-based social respect. English variants: “elders,” “presbyters.” Assamese: মণ্ডলীৰ পৰিচালক (môndolir pôricalôk, “church leader/overseer”) or বৃদ্ধ লোক (briddhô lok) where age-sense is in view. Risk: High. This office-term must be kept distinct from two Assamese institutional analogues: (1) the Satradhikar, the hereditary head of a Satra in the Ekasarana Dharma tradition (already flagged in the baseline’s apostle entry for avoiding গুৰু); and (2) the village/community elder or Panchayat-elder figure, whose authority derives from caste-community seniority rather than the specific pastoral-shepherding office 1 Peter describes (grounded in Christ’s own shepherd-headship, 2:25, 5:4). A translator note distinguishing this Christ-appointed, accountable, non-hereditary pastoral office from both institutional analogues is required, directly serving the curriculum doctrine “Elders and Humility.”
- Shepherd the flock of God that is among you — ποιμάνατε τὸ ἐν ὑμῖν ποίμνιον τοῦ θεοῦ (poimanate to en hymin poimnion tou theou); reuse ৰখীয়া root from 2:25. (Iswôror mer-côrabôk rôkhiyali kora). Risk: Medium-High.
- Not domineering… not for shameful gain but willingly, as examples — μὴ αἰσχροκερδῶς ἀλλὰ ἑκουσίως… τύποι γινόμενοι (mē aischrokerdōs alla hekousiōs… typoi ginomenoi); Assamese for “shameful gain”: অসৎ লাভৰ কাৰণে নহয় (ôsôtô labhôr karône nôhôy). Risk: Medium; ethical-integrity point relevant to concerns about exploitation associated with some religious-institutional fundraising/endowment practices, without needing to name any specific institution.
- Chief Shepherd — ἀρχιποίμην (archipoimēn); literal: head/chief shepherd; a unique NT coinage naming Christ as supreme over all under-shepherds (elders). Assamese: প্ৰধান ৰখীয়া (prôdhan rôkhiya). Risk: Medium-High; must be understood as Christ’s supreme headship over the elders described in 5:1-3, paralleling — not competing with — the baseline’s lordship_of_christ Critical doctrine; avoid any framing that elevates a human elder/Satradhikar-equivalent figure to this unique title.
- Crown of glory — τὸν τῆς δόξης στέφανον (ton tēs doxas stephanon); reuse মহিমা (glory, baseline High). Assamese: মহিমাৰ মুকুটা (môhimar mukuta). Risk: Medium; an eschatological reward image (an athlete’s victory wreath), not an earthly royal crown nor a moksha-attainment symbol — brief distinguishing note recommended.
- Younger, be subject to the elders; clothe yourselves with humility — ὁμοίως, νεώτεροι, ὑποτάγητε πρεσβυτέροις· πάντες δὲ ἀλλήλοις … τὴν ταπεινοφροσύνην ἐγκομβώσασθε (homoiōs, neōteroi, hypotagēte presbyterois… tapeinophrosynēn egkombōsasthe); ὑποτάσσω reuse (see 2:13, 3:1). Clothe yourselves with humility — ἐγκομβώσασθε literal: to tie on [a garment/apron], a vivid image (likely drawn from a servant’s or slave’s work-apron); English variants: “clothe yourselves,” “put on,” “gird yourselves.” Assamese: নম্ৰতা পিন্ধা (nômrôta pindha, “wear/put on humility”). Risk: High. Central to the curriculum doctrine “Elders and Humility.” Must be distinguished from ascetic self-abasement performed as a merit-earning spiritual discipline (a recognizable pattern in Satra bhakat renunciation and broader tapasya traditions) — biblical humility here is grace-empowered, other-serving posture modeled on Christ (cf. Philippians 2, and 1 Peter’s own suffering-servant Christology), not a technique for spiritual advancement or status.
5:6-11 — Humble under God’s hand, adversary devil, resist, God of all grace
- Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God — ταπεινώθητε οὖν ὑπὸ τὴν κραταιὰν χεῖρα τοῦ θεοῦ (tapeinōthēte oun hypo tēn krataian cheira tou theou); reuse নম্ৰ root. Risk: Medium-High, same humility-caution as above.
- Cast all your anxiety on him — πᾶσαν τὴν μέριμναν ὑμῶν ἐπιρίψαντες ἐπʼ αὐτόν (pasan tēn merimnan hymōn epiripsantes ep’ auton); Assamese: তোমালোকৰ সকলো চিন্তা তেীৱৰ ওপৰত পেলাই দিয়া. Risk: Low-Medium.
- Adversary the devil, like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour — ὁ ἀντίδικος ὑμῶν διάβολος ὡς λέων ὠρυόμενος περιπατεῖ ζητῶν τινα καταπιεῖν (ho antidikos hymōn diabolos hōs leōn ōryomenos peripatei zētōn tina katapiein). Adversary (ἀντίδικος): Assamese শত্ৰু (xôtru, also “legal opponent/accuser”). (Xoytan) as the standard Assamese Christian term. Risk: Medium-High. Must be presented as a single, personal, malevolent chief adversary opposed to God and God’s people, not one of many mythological demons/asuras/rakshasas in a populated cosmic hierarchy of good and evil spirits (a framework prominent in Puranic and folk-Assamese demonology, and distinct from the biblical Satan’s singular, defeated-yet-still-active role). Roaring lion: Assamese গৰজা সিংহ (gôrja xingho); low-risk simile, universally intelligible.
- Resist him, firm in your faith — ᾧ ἀντίστητε στερεοὶ τῇ πίστει (hō antistēte stereoi tē pistei); reuse বিশ্বাস root (faith, baseline High). Risk: Medium.
- The God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ — ὁ δὲ θεὸς πάσης χάριτος, ὁ καλέσας ὑμᾶς εἰς τὴν αἰώνιον αὐτοῦ δόξαν ἐν Χριστῷ (ho de theos pasēs charitos, ho kalesas hymas eis tēn aiōnion autou doxan en Christō); reuse ঈশ্বৰ + অনুগ্ৰহ + মতা/মতনি (called/calling, baseline High, per divine_calling doctrine) + মহিমা (glory). Risk: High; a dense concentration of established baseline High/Critical terms in one verse — apply glossary enforcement priority order strictly (Critical/High terms first).
5:12-14 — True grace, stand fast, kiss of love, peace
- This is the true grace of God; stand firm in it — ταύτην εἶναι ἀληθῆ χάριν τοῦ θεοῦ, εἰς ἣν στῆτε (tautēn einai alēthē charin tou theou, eis hēn stēte); reuse অনুগ্ৰহ (grace, baseline High). Risk: High, per baseline grace entry — should not soften “true” (ἀληθής) grace’s implicit contrast with any counterfeit or works-based alternative.
- Greet one another with the kiss of love — ἀσπάσασθε ἀλλήλους ἐν φιλήματι ἀγάπης (aspasasthe allēlous en philēmati agapēs); Assamese: প্ৰেমৰ চুমাৰে পাৰস্পৰিক মংগলাশীর্বাদ জ্ঞাপন কৰা, or more simply প্ৰেমৰ চুমাৰে মিলন কৰা. Risk: Low; a first-century greeting custom, culturally distinct from any Assamese greeting norm — should be rendered plainly as a description of the apostolic-era practice, with commentary noting it is a customary greeting of Christian affection, not requiring literal replication in every culture.
- Peace to all of you who are in Christ — εἰρήνη ὑμῖν πᾶσιν τοῖς ἐν Χριστῷ (eirēnē hymin pasin tois en Christō) — [REUSED FROM BASELINE]: শান্তি (xanti). Medium risk per baseline; distinguish from meditative calm sought through naam-kirtan/japa — this is the letter’s benedictory peace grounded in union with Christ (“in Christ,” reprising Romans’ baseline christian_identity_in_christ doctrine).
