Cross-Reference Analysis
Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis — Gospel of John (English → Assamese)
Methodology Note
This analysis covers every chapter of John (1–21) for Old Testament quotations and allusions, messianic references, typology, and — because Assamese already has a completed Romans Language Package sharing this destination language — explicit parallels to Romans. Every established baseline rendering (Jesus যীচু, Lord প্ৰভু, grace অনুগ্ৰহ, salvation পৰিত্ৰাণ, resurrection পুনৰুত্থান, seed of David দায়ূদৰ বংশৰ, etc.) is reused exactly per translation_memory.json. Chapters producing no new OT quotation are explicitly marked “reviewed — no direct OT citation” rather than omitted, per the full-book-coverage mandate.
Citation Normalization Convention
All citations in this and downstream artifacts use the format Book Chapter:Verse in English (e.g., “John 3:14”, “Genesis 15:6”, “Isaiah 53:1”, “Romans 10:16”). Verse numerals are Arabic, matching the AI Translation Requirements’ cross-reference rule. Assamese-language rendering of citations in destination-facing material follows Assamese Bible Society book-name conventions:
| Book | Assamese | Book | Assamese |
|---|---|---|---|
3:16 (not Assamese-script numerals; Arabic numerals retained per baseline convention).
PART A — Chapter-by-Chapter OT Quotation, Allusion, and Typology Matrix
John 1 — Prologue, Baptist’s Testimony, First Disciples
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Romans Parallel | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 1:1-3 | Pre-existent Logos, creation agency | the Word (Λόγος) | Genesis 1:1 (creation “in the beginning”); Proverbs 8:22-30 (personified pre-existent Wisdom, as background imagery, not identity) | Romans 11:36 (“from him and through him and to him are all things”) — shared creation-agency claim | Must not let বাক্য/সৃষ্টি (creation) language collapse into Vedantic Śabda-Brahman cosmogony; the Word is a personal agent, not an impersonal generative sound-principle |
| John 1:14 | Incarnation; glory dwelling among humanity | the Word/Jesus | Exodus 25:8; 40:34-35 (tabernacle, God’s glory dwelling with Israel); Exodus 33:18-23 (Moses shown God’s glory) | Romans 1:3 (“descended from David according to the flesh”); Romans 8:3 (“God sent his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh”) | দেহধাৰণ [baseline reuse, CRITICAL] — mandatory avatar-distinguishing note at this, the book’s very first occurrence |
| John 1:17 | Grace and truth embodied in Christ vs. Law given through Moses | Moses / Jesus | Exodus 34:6 (the LORD, merciful and gracious, abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness) | Romans 6:14 (“not under law but under grace”) — same law/grace contrast structure | অনুগ্ৰহ [baseline reuse, High] paired with new term সত্য; preserve the contrastive structure (law given / grace-and-truth came) without disparaging বিধান [baseline reuse] itself |
| John 1:21, 1:25 | Messianic forerunner expectation | John the Baptist | Deuteronomy 18:15,18 (“the Prophet” to come); Malachi 4:5 (Elijah to come) | No direct Romans parallel; general fulfillment-of-prophecy pattern shared with Romans 1:2 | ভাববাদী [baseline reuse] — must retain distinct expectation categories (Elijah/the Prophet/the Christ) as the text itself distinguishes them |
| John 1:23 | Forerunner’s role | John the Baptist | Isaiah 40:3 (direct quotation: “a voice crying in the wilderness, prepare the way of the LORD”) | No direct Romans parallel | Standard prophetic-fulfillment quotation; low collision risk |
| John 1:29, 1:36 | Substitutionary, sin-bearing sacrifice | Jesus (Lamb of God) | Exodus 12:1-13 (Passover lamb); Isaiah 53:7 (lamb led to slaughter, silent); Genesis 22:8 (God himself will provide the lamb) | Romans 3:25 (propitiation through his blood); Romans 8:32 (God did not spare his own Son) | ঈশ্বৰৰ মেষশাৱক — High risk; distinguish from repeated ritual পশুবলি; this Lamb’s sacrifice is unique and once-for-all, fulfilling three converging OT lamb-typologies simultaneously |
| John 1:41, 1:45, 1:49 | Messianic confession by first disciples | Andrew, Philip, Nathanael | Cumulative Messianic-expectation background (Deuteronomy 18; 2 Samuel 7; Psalm 2) | Romans 10:9 (“Jesus is Lord”) — same confessional structure, different formula | মচীহ [baseline reuse, Critical]; ঈশ্বৰৰ পুত্ৰ [baseline reuse, Critical] — confession chain must be rendered with full doctrinal weight, not as casual enthusiasm |
| John 1:51 | Heavenly access opened in the Son of Man | Jesus / Jacob (typological) | Genesis 28:12 (Jacob’s ladder — angels ascending and descending) | No direct Romans parallel | মানুহৰ পুত্ৰ [see 08 glossary #60] — typological link to Jacob’s vision; the Son of Man himself now is the point of connection between heaven and earth |
John 2 — Cana, Temple Clearing
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Romans Parallel | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 2:11 | First sign reveals glory | Jesus | Pattern echoes theophanic glory-revelation motifs (Exodus 33-34) rather than a direct citation | No direct Romans parallel; general পৰকাশ/মহিমা [baseline reuse] pattern | চিন [see 08 glossary #54] — Medium-High; distinguish sign as revelatory disclosure, not power-display |
| John 2:17 | Zeal for God’s house | Jesus | Psalm 69:9 (direct quotation: “zeal for your house will consume me”) — Psalm 69 is itself a major Passion-typology psalm (cf. John 19:28-29 below) | No direct Romans parallel | Standard quotation; low risk |
| John 2:19-21 | Temple typology — Christ’s body as the true temple | Jesus | Reinterpretation of the Jerusalem Temple (1 Kings 6-8 background); anticipates the resurrection | Romans 8:11 (the Spirit dwelling in believers) — extended temple-indwelling theme, though Paul’s direct temple/body language is 1 Corinthians, not Romans | মন্দিৰ [baseline forbidden for “church”] — here refers literally to the Jerusalem Temple building, an acceptable descriptive use; the metaphorical extension to Christ’s own body must use তেঁৰ শৰীৰ (his body), not মন্দিৰ, to avoid a Hindu image-shrine association |
John 3 — New Birth (Core Passage, vv.1-21) and Baptist’s Continued Testimony (vv.22-36)
(Full term-level treatment in 07_semantic_analysis.md Part A; this table adds the OT/typological and cross-curriculum layer.)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Romans Parallel | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 3:3,5,7 | New birth by the Spirit | Nicodemus / Jesus | Ezekiel 36:25-27 (God will sprinkle clean water, give a new heart and a new spirit); Ezekiel 37:9-14 (breath/spirit gives new life to dry bones) — the OT background Nicodemus, “the teacher of Israel” (3:10), should have recognized | Romans 6:4 (“we too might walk in newness of life”); Romans 8:9-11 (the Spirit of God dwelling in believers) | ওপৰৰ পৰা নতুনকৈ জন্ম [see 08 glossary #25] — CRITICAL; mandatory punarjanma-distinguishing note; note the Ezekiel background explicitly to ground the doctrine in the OT rather than leaving it to appear as a novel Johannine idea |
| John 3:14 | Typology of the cross | Jesus / Moses (typological) | Numbers 21:8-9 (bronze serpent lifted up in the wilderness so that whoever looked would live) — a direct, explicit OT type named by Jesus himself | Romans 3:25 (propitiation); Romans 8:3 (condemning sin in the flesh) | ওপৰত তুলি ধৰা হ’ব [see 07 semantic analysis v.14] — High; the serpent-typology requires a brief OT narrative note for readers with low OT literacy, per the semantic analysis |
| John 3:16 | God’s initiating, self-giving love; the gift of the Son | God the Father | Cf. Genesis 22:2,12,16 (Abraham not withholding his only son — verbal/thematic echo of “only/beloved son given up”) | Romans 5:8 (“God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us”); Romans 8:32 (“He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all”) | ঈশ্বৰে জগতখনক এনে প্ৰেম কৰিলে [see 07 semantic analysis] — High/Critical; this is the single most important cross-curriculum theological parallel in the whole book: John 3:16 and Romans 5:8/8:32 must read as the same theological claim in Assamese — God’s own initiating love, prior to and independent of any human merit or devotion |
| John 3:17-19 | Judgment structured by belief/unbelief | Jesus | No single OT citation; draws on the light/darkness and judgment motifs of Isaiah 9:2; 60:1-3 | Romans 1:18 (wrath revealed against unrighteousness); Romans 2:12-16 (judgment according to works/law); Romans 8:1 (no condemnation in Christ) | বিচাৰ কৰা [see 07 semantic analysis] — must not be read as impersonal karmic reckoning; render consistently with Romans’ own judgment vocabulary where structurally parallel |
| John 3:31 | Pre-existence restated by the Baptist | John the Baptist | Continues 3:13’s descent/ascent claim | Romans 10:6-7 (Paul’s own descent/ascent language, quoting Deuteronomy 30:12-13, applied to Christ) — a notable structural parallel: both Testaments use descent/ascent language of Christ, resisting any avatar-cycle reading | ওপৰৰ পৰা অহাজন — Critical (see 07 semantic analysis); cross-reference to Romans 10:6-7’s own use of descent/ascent language strengthens the case for a unique, once-for-all incarnation rather than a repeatable pattern |
| John 3:36 | Wrath as the counterpart to eternal life | — | Echoes covenant-curse language broadly (Deuteronomy 28) rather than a single citation | Romans 1:18 (God’s wrath revealed); Romans 5:9 (saved from wrath through Christ) | ঈশ্বৰৰ ক্ৰোধ [see 08 glossary #61] — must be rendered identically in register and force wherever John’s and Romans’ wrath-of-God language appear, so students recognize it as one unified doctrine |
John 4 — Samaritan Woman, Worship, Nobleman’s Son
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Romans Parallel | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 4:5-15 | Well-typology; living water | Jesus / Samaritan woman | Genesis 24:10-27 (Isaac’s bride found at a well); Genesis 29:1-12 (Jacob meets Rachel at a well); Exodus 2:15-21 (Moses meets Zipporah at a well) — a recognized OT “betrothal type-scene” reworked as a spiritual-seeking encounter; also Exodus 17:1-7 (water from the rock) | No direct Romans parallel | জীৱ পানী [see 07 semantic analysis] — Medium-High; the well type-scene allusion is a literary/typological pattern, not a direct quotation, and should be flagged for cultural-bridge commentary rather than translator note |
| John 4:20-24 | True worship not tied to a shrine | Jesus / Samaritan woman | Deuteronomy 12:5-14 (centralized worship at the place God chooses) — John presents this OT concern as now transcended in Christ | Romans 12:1 (“present your bodies as a living sacrifice… spiritual worship”) — both texts relocate worship away from a fixed cultic site/ritual toward Spirit-enabled, whole-life devotion | আৰাধনা কৰা [see 08 glossary #53] — High; mandatory note distinguishing Spirit-and-truth worship from shrine/image-directed পুজা/আৰাধনা; Romans 12:1’s “living sacrifice” language provides a useful cross-curriculum reinforcement of worship as whole-life, not ritual-site-based |
| John 4:25-26,29 | Messianic self-disclosure to a Samaritan | Samaritan woman / Jesus | General Messianic-expectation background | No direct Romans parallel | মচীহ [baseline reuse] |
| John 4:42 | Universal scope: “Savior of the world” | Samaritan townspeople | No direct OT citation | Romans 3:29-30 (“Is God the God of Jews only? … one God”); Romans 10:12 (“no distinction between Jew and Greek”) | জগতৰ পৰিত্ৰাণকৰ্তা [see 07 semantic analysis] — High; reinforces the baseline’s “universal_scope_of_gospel” doctrine; render consistently with Romans’ own no-distinction language |
John 5 — Sabbath Healing, the Son’s Authority
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Romans Parallel | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 5:18 | Equality with God claimed | Jesus / Jewish leaders | No direct OT citation; the leaders’ own inference from Jesus calling God “his own Father” | Romans 9:5 (“Christ, who is God over all”) — same-register deity claim | ঈশ্বৰৰ সমান [see 08 glossary #47] — Critical; render with the same unqualified force as Romans 9:5 |
| John 5:23 | Equal honor to Father and Son | Jesus | No direct OT citation; theological deduction | Romans 9:5; general “Unity of the Father and the Son” doctrine | পুত্ৰক সন্মান কৰা — Critical (see 07 semantic analysis) |
| John 5:28-29 | Two resurrections, unto life and unto judgment | Jesus | Daniel 12:2 (many shall awake, some to everlasting life, some to shame) — direct conceptual source | Romans 2:6-11 (God’s righteous judgment according to deeds, framed within Romans’ universal accountability doctrine) | জীৱনৰ পুনৰুত্থান / বিচাৰৰ পুনৰুত্থান [baseline reuse পুনৰুত্থান, CRITICAL] |
| John 5:39,45-47 | Scripture testifies to Christ | Jesus / Moses | Deuteronomy 18:15 (the Prophet); broader Pentateuchal witness | Romans 1:2 (“the gospel…promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures”); Romans 3:21 (“the Law and the Prophets bear witness”) | সাক্ষ্য [see 08 glossary #24] — the “Scripture testifies of me” claim in John parallels Romans’ “fulfillment of prophecy” doctrine (already High risk in baseline) exactly; render সাক্ষ্য consistently in both curricula |
John 6 — Bread of Life
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Romans Parallel | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 6:31 | Manna typology | Jesus / crowd | Exodus 16:4,15 (manna given in the wilderness); Psalm 78:24 (direct quotation source: “he gave them bread of heaven to eat”) | No direct Romans parallel | মই জীৱনৰ ৰুটি [see 08 glossary #39] — High; manna typology (temporary, repeated provision) contrasted with Christ (permanent, once-given bread of life) |
| John 6:14 | ”The Prophet” identification | crowd | Deuteronomy 18:15,18 | No direct Romans parallel | ভাববাদী [baseline reuse] |
| John 6:44-45 | Father’s sovereign initiative in drawing | Jesus | Isaiah 54:13 (direct quotation: “they shall all be taught by God”) | Romans 8:29-30; Romans 9:11-16 (election language) | আকৰ্ষণ কৰা/টানি নিয়া [see 07 semantic analysis] — High; must convey the same sovereign-initiative doctrine as Romans’ election/effectual calling, not karma or fate |
| John 6:51-58 | Substitutionary self-giving appropriated by faith | Jesus | Passover/manna typology combined | Romans 5:6-11 (Christ’s death appropriated by faith, “while we were yet sinners”) | মাংস আৰু তেজ [see 07 semantic analysis] — High; not literal cannibalism nor ritual magic |
John 7 — Feast of Booths, Living Water, Messianic Debate
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Romans Parallel | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 7:37-39 | Spirit as living water flowing from within | Jesus | Isaiah 58:11; Zechariah 14:8; Ezekiel 47:1-9 (living/flowing water associated with God’s presence and the future temple) | Romans 8:9-11 (the Spirit dwelling in/giving life to believers) | জীৱ পানীৰ নাৈ [see 07 semantic analysis] — Medium-High |
| John 7:42 | Davidic/Bethlehem messianic expectation | crowd (debate) | Micah 5:2 (ruler from Bethlehem); 2 Samuel 7:12-16 (Davidic covenant) | Romans 1:3 (“descended from David according to the flesh”) — direct terminological overlap: John 7:42’s “seed of David” (σπέρμα Δαυίδ) must use the exact baseline term দায়ূদৰ বংশৰ established for Romans 1:3 | দায়ূদৰ বংশৰ [baseline reuse, exact term required] — High; this is a direct shared-term case, not merely a thematic parallel — see Part D below |
John 8 — Light of the World, Freedom, Pre-existence
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Romans Parallel | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 8:17 | Legal witness requirement | Jesus | Deuteronomy 19:15 (direct citation: matter established by two or three witnesses) | No direct Romans parallel | সাক্ষী [see 08 glossary #24] |
| John 8:31-36 | Freedom from bondage to sin | Jesus | No direct OT citation; conceptual background in Exodus deliverance from slavery in Egypt (typological reversal: sin as the new Egypt) | Romans 6:16-22 (slaves of sin vs. slaves of righteousness/obedience) — near-identical doctrinal structure | স্বাধীনতা [see 08 glossary #56] — CRITICAL new decision (never মুক্তি); Romans 6 uses দাস (slave) extensively for the same bondage-to-sin concept — render দাস consistently across both curricula |
| John 8:33,37,39-40,56-58 | True children of Abraham; Abraham’s faith and Christ’s pre-existence | Jesus / Jewish interlocutors / Abraham | Genesis 12; 15:6 (Abraham’s faith counted as righteousness — not directly quoted here but the underlying figure invoked); Genesis 17-18 (Abraham’s encounters); Exodus 3:14 (I AM WHO I AM) | Romans 4:1-25 (Abraham justified by faith, not works or circumcision); Romans 9:6-8 (true children of Abraham are children of the promise, not merely physical descent) | মই আছোঁ [see 08 glossary #35] — CRITICAL; the Abraham-descent argument in John 8 and Romans 4/9 make structurally identical theological moves (true sonship is not mere physical descent) and should be cross-taught; Genesis 15:6 is the anchor OT text for Romans’ side of this argument and should be cited alongside John 8 in teaching materials even though John 8 does not directly quote it |
John 9 — The Man Born Blind
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Romans Parallel | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 9:2-3 | Rejection of a sin-causes-suffering framework | disciples / Jesus | Corrects a misapplication of Exodus 20:5 (generational sin); consistent with Ezekiel 18:1-4,20 (each person accountable for his own sin, not inherited/karmic guilt) | Romans 5:12-19 (Adam’s sin and its universal effect is corporate/representative, not a karmic transfer of merit/demerit across individual rebirths) | অন্ধ [see 07 semantic analysis] — Medium; important cultural note: Jesus explicitly rejects the disciples’ sin-caused-this-affliction assumption, a direct counter to a karma-causation reading a Hindu-background reader might otherwise supply |
| John 9:38 | Worship of Jesus by the healed man | healed man | No direct OT citation | No direct Romans parallel | আৰাধনা কৰা [see 08 glossary #53] — High; here directed at Jesus personally, an implicit deity-recognition act reinforcing Deity of Christ |
John 10 — Good Shepherd, Oneness with the Father
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Romans Parallel | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 10:1-16 | Shepherd typology | Jesus | Ezekiel 34:11-16,23 (God himself will shepherd his flock; one shepherd, David my servant); Psalm 23; Zechariah 11:4-17 | No direct Romans parallel | উত্তম ৰখীয়া [see 08 glossary #41] — High |
| John 10:16 | One flock, one shepherd — unity across distinct groups | Jesus | Ezekiel 34:23; 37:24 (one shepherd over a reunited people) | Romans 11:17-24 (one olive tree; Gentile branches grafted in alongside Jewish branches) — strong structural parallel: two different organic images (flock/tree) making the same “Unity of Jews and Gentiles” claim | এক মেৰ-পাল, এজন ৰখীয়া (ek mer-pal, ejôn rôkhiya) — High; teaching materials should explicitly connect this to Romans 11’s olive-tree unity argument as the same doctrine in two images |
| John 10:30 | Father-Son ontological unity | Jesus | No direct OT citation; theological climax of the chapter | No direct Romans parallel (closest: Romans 9:5’s “God over all” deity claim) | মই আৰু পিতা এক [see 08 glossary #48] — CRITICAL |
| John 10:34 | ”You are gods” | Jesus | Psalm 82:6 (direct quotation, used a minore ad maius: if mere judges could be called “gods,” how much more the one truly sent from the Father) | No direct Romans parallel | Requires careful handling: Jesus’ argument is rhetorical/forensic, not a claim that humans are ontologically divine; must not be read as supporting a monist “all are God” framework |
John 11 — Raising of Lazarus
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Romans Parallel | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 11:25 | Christ as the resurrection and the life | Jesus | No direct OT citation; fulfills the resurrection hope of Daniel 12:2; Isaiah 26:19 | Romans 6:4-5; Romans 8:11 (bodily resurrection by the Spirit) | মই পুনৰুত্থান আৰু জীৱন [baseline reuse পুনৰুত্থান, CRITICAL] |
| John 11:4,40 | Glory of God displayed | Jesus / narrator | No direct OT citation | Romans 8:18 (“the glory that is to be revealed”); Romans doctrine “Deity of Christ” | ঈশ্বৰৰ মহিমা [baseline reuse] |
John 12 — Triumphal Entry, the Hour Comes, Isaiah Citations
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Romans Parallel | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 12:13 | Triumphal entry acclamation | crowd | Psalm 118:25-26 (direct quotation: “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord”) | No direct Romans parallel | হোচান্না (transliteration, established) — Low-Medium risk |
| John 12:15 | Messianic king imagery | narrator (fulfillment citation) | Zechariah 9:9 (direct quotation: king comes riding on a donkey) | No direct Romans parallel | Standard fulfillment quotation |
| John 12:24 | Grain of wheat — death producing life | Jesus | No direct OT citation; agricultural parable | Romans 6:5 (united with him in a death like his); general substitutionary/resurrection logic | ঘেঁহুৰ দাণা [see 07 semantic analysis] |
| John 12:38 | Unbelief despite the signs, fulfilling Isaiah | narrator (fulfillment citation) | Isaiah 53:1 (direct quotation: “Lord, who has believed our report, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”) | Romans 10:16 quotes the identical verse, Isaiah 53:1, in the identical wording, for the identical purpose (explaining Israel’s unbelief despite the gospel’s proclamation) | CRITICAL SHARED QUOTATION — see Part D below. This is the single most important direct textual link between John and Romans in all of Scripture’s cross-referencing for this language pair; the Assamese rendering of Isaiah 53:1 in both curricula MUST be verbatim identical |
| John 12:40 | Hardened perception preventing belief | narrator (fulfillment citation) | Isaiah 6:9-10 (direct quotation: eyes blinded, hearts hardened) | Romans 11:8 quotes a related but distinct combination (Deuteronomy 29:4 + Isaiah 29:10 — “a spirit of stupor… eyes that would not see”) on the same theme of judicial spiritual blindness, but is NOT the same verse | Distinguish for teaching purposes: John 12:40 (Isaiah 6:9-10) and Romans 11:8 (Isaiah 29:10/Deuteronomy 29:4) are two related but textually distinct OT citations on the shared theme of hardened unbelief — do not conflate them as the same quotation |
| John 12:31-32 | Judgment of the world; the Son lifted up | Jesus | Continues 3:14; 8:28 lifted-up motif | Romans 8:37-39 — the defeated ruler theme parallels Paul’s “more than conquerors” assurance | এই জগতৰ শাসক / ওপৰত তুলি ধৰা — see 07 semantic analysis |
John 13 — Foot Washing, New Commandment, Betrayal Foretold
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Romans Parallel | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 13:18 | Betrayal foretold | narrator (fulfillment citation) / Judas | Psalm 41:9 (direct quotation: “he who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me”) | No direct Romans parallel | Standard fulfillment quotation |
| John 13:34-35 | New commandment of love | Jesus | No direct OT citation; echoes and intensifies Leviticus 19:18 (“love your neighbor as yourself”) | Romans 13:8-10 (love fulfills the law, quoting the same Leviticus 19:18 principle) — strong structural parallel: both Testaments-within-this-pair root Christian ethics in the same OT command, now Christ-intensified | পৰস্পৰে প্ৰেম কৰা [see 07 semantic analysis]; note the Romans 13:8-10 parallel explicitly for cross-curriculum teaching consistency |
John 14 — Way, Truth, Life; the Paraclete Promised; Peace
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Romans Parallel | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 14:6 | Exclusive mediatorial access to the Father | Jesus | No direct OT citation | Romans 5:1-2 (“through our Lord Jesus Christ… access”); Romans 10:9-13 (calling on the name) | মই পথ, সত্য আৰু জীৱন [see 07 semantic analysis] — CRITICAL |
| John 14:16-26 | Promise of the Paraclete | Jesus | Ezekiel 36:26-27 (new heart, God’s Spirit within); Joel 2:28-29 (outpouring of the Spirit — quoted directly in Acts 2, background to this promise) | Romans 8:26-27 (the Spirit helps in weakness and intercedes) | সহায়ক [see 08 glossary #36] — High; mandatory note at first occurrence |
| John 14:27 | Christ’s peace, unlike the world’s | Jesus | No direct OT citation | Romans 5:1 (peace with God through justification); Romans 8:6 (the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace) | শান্তি [baseline reuse] — Medium; preserve the explicit contrast clause |
John 15 — True Vine, World’s Hatred, Paraclete Continued
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Romans Parallel | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 15:1-8 | Vine typology | Jesus | Psalm 80:8-16; Isaiah 5:1-7; Jeremiah 2:21; Ezekiel 15; 19:10-14 (Israel repeatedly figured as God’s vine/vineyard, often a failed/unfruitful one) | Romans 11:17-24 (olive tree — a different horticultural image making a related grafting/fruitfulness argument) | সঁচা দ্ৰাক্ষালতা [see 08 glossary #43] — High; John’s vine (Christ himself as the true, fruitful vine replacing failed Israel-as-vine) and Romans’ olive tree (Gentiles grafted into Israel’s root) are complementary but distinct images — do not merge their vocabulary |
| John 15:16 | Christ’s sovereign choosing of the disciples | Jesus | No direct OT citation | Romans 9:11-16 (election language: “not because of works but because of him who calls”) | মই তোমালোকক মনোনয়ন কৰিলোঁ [baseline reuse root মনোনয়ন] — High |
| John 15:25 | Hatred without cause, fulfilling Scripture | narrator (fulfillment citation) | Psalm 35:19; Psalm 69:4 (hated without cause) | No direct Romans parallel | Standard fulfillment quotation |
John 16 — The Paraclete’s Ministry, Sorrow into Joy
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Romans Parallel | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 16:8,13 | Paraclete convicts and guides into truth | Jesus | No direct OT citation | Romans 8:14 (led by the Spirit); Romans 8:26-27 | দোষী প্ৰমাণ কৰা / সত্যৰ পথ দেখুৱাব [see 08 glossary #38] |
| John 16:33 | Christ’s accomplished victory over the world | Jesus | No direct OT citation | Romans 8:37 (“more than conquerors”) — thematic parallel: assurance grounded in Christ’s finished victory, not human effort | মই জগতক জয় কৰিছোঁ — High; cross-reference Romans 8:37 for teaching consistency on the “assurance of salvation” doctrine |
John 17 — The High Priestly Prayer
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Romans Parallel | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 17:3 | Eternal life defined as relational knowledge of God | Jesus (prayer) | No direct OT citation; echoes covenantal “knowing the LORD” language (Jeremiah 31:34; Hosea 6:6) | No single direct Romans parallel; conceptually undergirds Romans’ entire relational (not merit-based) framing of salvation | তোমাক জানিব পাৰে [see 08 glossary #50] — CRITICAL anchor verse |
| John 17:5 | Pre-incarnate glory “before the world existed” | Jesus (prayer) | No direct OT citation | No direct Romans parallel; reinforces Deity/Pre-existence doctrine parallel to Romans 9:5 | মহিমান্বিত কৰা [baseline reuse] — Critical |
| John 17:11,21-23 | Prayer for the unity of believers, patterned on Father-Son unity | Jesus (prayer) | No direct OT citation | No direct single-verse Romans parallel; conceptually related to Romans 12:4-5 (one body, many members) and Romans 15:5-6 (“live in such harmony… that together you may glorify God”) | যাতে তেঁলোক এক হ’ব পাৰে [see 08 glossary #49] — CRITICAL; cross-reference Romans 12:4-5 and 15:5-6 for the ecclesial-unity dimension, while keeping the Father-Son ontological unity (10:30) doctrinally distinct from believers’ relational/volitional unity |

| John 18:36 | Christ’s kingdom not of this world | Jesus | No direct OT citation | Romans 13:1-7 (government/authority) — both texts distinguish Christ’s/God’s reign from earthly political power structures, directly relevant to Assam’s Ahom-kingdom political-sovereignty sensitivity already flagged in the baseline | মোৰ ৰাজ্য এই জগতৰ নহয় — Medium; reinforce non-political kingship consistently with baseline’s kingdom_of_god caution |

| John 19:37 | Pierced — Zechariah typology | narrator (fulfillment citation) | Zechariah 12:10 (direct quotation: “they will look on him whom they have pierced”) | No direct Romans parallel | Requires brief typological note; see 07 semantic analysis |
| John 19:30 | ”It is finished” — completed atoning work | Jesus | No direct OT citation | Romans 5:6-11; Romans 8:32-34 (the completed, sufficient work of Christ as the ground of assurance) | সম্পূৰ্ণ হ’ল [see 08 glossary #45] — High; render as triumphant completion, consistent with Romans’ own “finished work” theology |

| John 20:30-31 | Purpose statement: believe and have life | narrator | Echoes the whole book’s belief-life vocabulary; conceptually anchored back to 3:15-16 and 17:3 | Romans 10:9-13 (“if you confess… and believe… you will be saved… everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved”) — the two books’ respective hermeneutical-key/thesis statements share the identical believe→life/salvation structure | যাতে বিশ্বাস কৰি জীৱন লাভ কৰিব পাৰে [see 08 glossary #63] — CRITICAL; must echo Romans 10:9-13’s vocabulary pattern where the underlying doctrinal structure (belief leading to life/salvation through the name) is identical |

PART C — Typology Summary Table
| Type (OT) | Antitype (John) | OT Source | John Reference | Notes |

| Creation breath | New-creation Spirit-reception | Genesis 2:7 | John 20:22 | New-creation typology |
PART D — Shared OT Quotation Rendering-Consistency Rules (John ↔ Romans)
Because Assamese now has completed Language Packages for both Romans and John, the following OT citations are quoted in BOTH curricula and must receive verbatim-identical Assamese renderings wherever they occur, per the baseline’s “Theological Consistency Rules Across Documents”:
| OT Citation | Occurrence in Romans | Occurrence in John | Rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Isaiah 53:1 (“Lord, who has believed our report, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”) | Romans 10:16 | John 12:38 | MANDATORY VERBATIM MATCH. Both texts quote this verse for the identical rhetorical purpose (explaining unbelief despite the message being proclaimed/the signs being seen). The Assamese rendering fixed for Romans 10:16 in the Romans Language Package MUST be reused character-for-character at John 12:38. This is the single highest-priority shared-quotation rule in this cross-reference analysis. |
| 2 Samuel 7:12-16 / Micah 5:2 (Davidic seed/Bethlehem) — conceptual background, not a verbatim shared quotation | Romans 1:3 (“seed of David,” σπέρμα Δαυίδ) | John 7:42 (“seed of David,” σπέρμα Δαυίδ) | Both passages use the identical Greek phrase σπέρμα Δαυίδ. The Assamese term দায়ূদৰ বংশৰ [baseline reuse] fixed for Romans 1:3 must be reused exactly at John 7:42. |
| Isaiah 6:9-10 vs. Isaiah 29:10 / Deuteronomy 29:4 (hardened perception theme) | Romans 11:8 (quotes Deuteronomy 29:4 / Isaiah 29:10) | John 12:40 (quotes Isaiah 6:9-10) | DO NOT MERGE. These are related-theme but textually distinct citations. Render each according to its own source text; do not let translators or reviewers treat them as “the same verse” simply because both describe hardened unbelief. |
| Leviticus 19:18 (love your neighbor) | Romans 13:8-10 (direct quotation) | John 13:34-35 (intensification, not direct quotation) | Render the underlying love-command vocabulary consistently (পৰস্পৰে প্ৰেম কৰা / প্ৰতিবাসীক প্ৰেম কৰা) across both curricula, while noting John 13 intensifies rather than merely restates the Levitical command. |
| Genesis 15:6 (Abraham’s faith credited as righteousness) | Romans 4:3 (direct quotation) | John 8:56-58 (Abraham referenced, not this verse quoted) | Not a shared verbatim quotation, but teaching materials should cross-reference Romans 4:3/Genesis 15:6 whenever explaining John 8:39-40’s “true children of Abraham” argument, since both make the same faith-not-descent doctrinal point. |
PART E — Direct Cross-Curriculum Thematic Parallels Matrix (John ↔ Romans)
| John Theme/Passage | Romans Theme/Passage | Shared Doctrine | Consistency Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| New birth by the Spirit (John 3:3-8) | Newness of life, Spirit-indwelling (Romans 6:4; 8:9-11) | New Birth / Regeneration | Both must use আত্মাৰ দ্বাৰা (by the Spirit) as the effecting-agent phrase |
| God’s initiating love (John 3:16) | God’s initiating love (Romans 5:8; 8:32) | God’s Love for the World | Identical theological force; ঈশ্বৰে…প্ৰেম কৰিলে construction reused |
| Wrath as counterpart to life (John 3:36) | Wrath revealed (Romans 1:18) | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | ঈশ্বৰৰ ক্ৰোধ rendered identically |
| Freedom from bondage to sin (John 8:31-36) | Slaves of sin vs. slaves of righteousness (Romans 6:16-22) | Sin’s Bondage / Freedom | দাস used consistently for bondage; স্বাধীনতা never মুক্তি |
| True children of Abraham by faith (John 8:39-40) | Children of Abraham by faith not descent (Romans 4; 9:6-8) | Justification by Faith | Genesis 15:6 cross-referenced in teaching notes |
| Father-Son unity (John 10:30; 17:11,21-23) | “God over all” deity claim (Romans 9:5) | Unity of the Father and the Son / Deity of Christ | Distinguish relational/volitional believer-unity from Father-Son ontological unity |
| One flock, one shepherd (John 10:16) | One olive tree, Jew and Gentile (Romans 11:17-24) | Unity of Jews and Gentiles | Keep vine/flock/tree images distinct; same doctrine, different figures |
| Election/drawing (John 6:44; 15:16) | Election language (Romans 9:11-16) | Election / Effectual Calling | মনোনয়ন root reused |
| Paraclete intercedes/helps (John 14:16-26; 16:7-15) | Spirit intercedes in weakness (Romans 8:26-27) | Holy Spirit as Counselor | সহায়ক kept distinct from মধ্যস্থতা (baseline term for Christ’s/believers’ intercession) |
| “It is finished” (John 19:30) | Christ’s completed, sufficient work (Romans 5:6-11; 8:32-34) | Substitutionary Death | সম্পূৰ্ণ হ’ল conveys triumphant completion |
| Resurrection as life-source (John 11:25; 20) | Resurrection and justification (Romans 1:4; 4:25) | Resurrection of Christ | পুনৰুত্থান reused exactly |
| Purpose statement: believe→life (John 20:30-31) | Confess/believe→saved (Romans 10:9-13) | Eternal Life through Faith | Structural parallel must be visible in Assamese phrasing |
| Non-political kingship (John 18:36) | Government/authority (Romans 13:1-7) | Kingdom Mission | Reinforce non-territorial kingship consistently with Ahom-kingdom sensitivity |
Governance Notes
- All Part D “mandatory verbatim match” rules take priority over any chapter-specific stylistic preference in Phase 2 translation.
- When the John translation memory is merged with the Romans-derived baseline (per
08_core_glossary.mdgovernance note #1), the Isaiah 53:1 rendering must be pulled from the existing Romans 10:16 segment cache, not re-translated independently. - Any future curriculum added to this Assamese Language Package must be checked against this cross-reference matrix before introducing new renderings of Isaiah 53:1, Genesis 15:6, or “seed of David” language.
- Every chapter of John (1–21) has been reviewed for this analysis; chapters with lighter direct OT citation density (2, 9, 11, 13, 16, 21) are represented above with their actual (sometimes allusive rather than quotational) connections rather than omitted.
