1 Peter 1–5 | Per-Term Translation Risk Glossary
This glossary extends the Romans baseline translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json for the 1 Peter curriculum. Section A lists terms already fixed by the baseline that recur in 1 Peter — renderings are locked and must not be altered. Section B lists new terms first requiring definition for 1 Peter, proposed for addition to translation memory (version increment) in Phase 2. All risk tiers follow the baseline’s four-tier framework (Critical / High / Medium / Low) and routing conventions from doctrine_risk_registry.json.

Mandatory note. |

| Spirits in prison | πνεύματα ἐν φυλακῇ (pneumata en phylakē) | বন্দী আত্মা | bôndi atma | Critical | Christ’s Proclamation to the Spirits | 3:19 | Must not be read as ancestor-spirits requiring propitiation or general departed souls awaiting rebirth; historically specific referent. Risk Summary for 1 Peter New Terms (Section B)
| Risk Tier | Count | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|
| Critical | 14 | Human theologian — every occurrence |
| High | 20 | Human theologian |
| Medium-High | 8 | Human theologian (treat as High for routing purposes) |
| Medium | 15 | Native speaker review |
| Low | 0 (all Low-risk items absorbed into Section A baseline terms) | — |
Note on cumulative risk: 1 Peter carries a higher proportion of Critical-tier new terms than Romans, driven by three converging factors specific to this book: (1) the substitutionary atonement language of 2:21-25 and 3:18, which intersects directly with the baseline’s already-Critical incarnation/resurrection/lordship protections; (2) the “living stone” and “royal priesthood” ecclesiology of 2:4-10, which collides with concrete, still-practiced Assamese religious institutions (Shaligram stone veneration, Brahmin priestly caste, caste-coded জাতি vocabulary) in ways Romans’ more abstract soteriological vocabulary did not; and (3) the interpretively contested “spirits in prison” passage (3:18-22), which is doctrinally sensitive independent of any syncretism risk and requires theologian adjudication regardless of lexical choice.
Critical Risk Terms
God
Approved rendering: ঈশ্বৰ
Transliteration: Iswôr
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ভগৱান, পৰমেশ্বৰ
Original: θεός
Category: God
ঈশ্বৰ is the standard Assamese Bible Society term for the one true God. ভগৱান is the common Assamese devotional address for one’s chosen deity (ista-devata) within Vaishnavite/Ekasarana bhakti and carries too much devotional-object ambiguity for consistent doctrinal use. Inherited from Romans package; anchors ঈশ্বৰৰ পূৰ্বজ্ঞান (1 Peter 1:2), সকলো অনুগ্ৰহৰ ঈশ্বৰ (5:10), and বিশ্বাসী সৃষ্টিকৰ্তা (4:19) constructions throughout 1 Peter.
Father
Approved rendering: পিতা
Transliteration: pita
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: ব্ৰহ্মা, সৃষ্টিকৰ্তা
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
God as personal Father. Avoid Hindu creator-deity names (ব্ৰহ্মা). Inherited from Romans package. In 1 Peter 1:17’s ‘Father who judges impartially,’ keep distinct from সৃষ্টিকৰ্তা (reserved for 4:19’s explicit Creator-role context).
Lord
Approved rendering: প্ৰভু
Transliteration: prôbhu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: স্বামী, ঈশ্বৰ
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
Established Assamese Christian term; must convey exclusive, supreme Lordship. Inherited from Romans package. 1 Peter 3:15’s ‘sanctify Christ as Lord’ directly parallels the fixed Romans 10:9 confession; 3:22 extends this to cosmic supremacy over angels, authorities, and powers.
Jesus
Approved rendering: যীচু
Transliteration: Yisu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ঈছা
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
Assamese Bible Society standard form. Inherited from Romans package. Never ঈছা throughout 1 Peter (1:1, 1:3, 1:7, 2:21-25, 3:18, 4:1, 5:10, 5:14).
Christ
Approved rendering: খ্ৰীষ্ট
Transliteration: Khristo
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: অৱতাৰ-adjacent glosses
Original: Χριστός
Category: Christology
New standalone translation-memory entry for this curriculum — the Romans baseline package recorded খ্ৰীষ্ট only within its transliteration standards, not as its own glossary term. Established Assamese Christian transliteration, anchoring every suffering, resurrection, and Lordship claim in 1 Peter. Must not be rendered or glossed with অৱতাৰ-adjacent language implying Christ is one divine descent among several; keep distinct from Krishna-avatar categories per the baseline’s incarnation caution.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: পবিত্ৰ আত্মা
Transliteration: pobitrô atma
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: ব্ৰহ্ম, পৰমাত্মা
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: God
Names the personal Holy Spirit, third Person of the Trinity. Inherited from Romans package. 1 Peter 1:11’s ‘Spirit of Christ’ (খ্ৰীষ্টৰ আত্মা) names this same personal Spirit, not a separate impersonal force.
Salvation
Approved rendering: পৰিত্ৰাণ
Transliteration: poritran
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: মুক্তি, মোক্ষ, নিস্তাৰ
Original: σωτηρία
Category: Salvation
CRITICAL: NEVER মুক্তি or মোক্ষ. Inherited from Romans package. 1 Peter 3:20-21’s flood typology is a particular risk point: floodwater itself must not be equated with পৰিত্ৰাণ.
Righteousness
Approved rendering: ধাৰ্মিকতা
Transliteration: dharmikôta
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: ধৰ্ম, পুণ্য, ন্যায়
Original: δικαιοσύνη
Category: Salvation
CRITICAL: Never ধৰ্ম. Inherited from Romans package. In 1 Peter carries compounded risk of a karma-merit reading when suffering is involved (3:14, 3:18); this suffering is participation in Christ’s pattern, never karmic consequence.
Resurrection
Approved rendering: পুনৰুত্থান
Transliteration: punoruththan
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Rejected alternatives: পুনৰ্জন্ম, পুনৰ্জীৱন
Original: ἀνάστασις
Category: Eschatology

NEVER পুনৰ্জন্ম (reincarnation within সংসাৰ). The single greatest lexical trap in 1 Peter (1:3, 1:23): the surface parallel between ‘born again’ and ‘reborn’ must not let an Assamese Hindu/Ekasarana-background reader hear this as one more turn of the rebirth cycle. Mandatory distinguishing note at every first occurrence, parity with পুনৰুত্থান’s protection.
