Semantic Analysis

Semantic Analysis: Jude (Koine Greek → Assamese)

0. Book-Level Notes

Jude is a single-chapter epistle (25 verses in the standard versification: Jude 1:1–25). Because there is only one chapter, “full-book, chapter-by-chapter coverage” and “core-passage verse-by-verse coverage” substantially overlap. This document resolves that as follows:

  • Section 1 treats the core passage, Jude 1:3–23, verse-by-verse, at full doctrinal depth (the body of the letter: the appeal to contend for the faith, the false-teacher polemic, the Old Testament types, and the pastoral instruction to the wavering).
  • Section 2 treats the remainder of the chapter — Jude 1:1–2 (salutation) and Jude 1:24–25 (doxology) — with the same field structure, since the PRD mandates that no verse of the book may be silently omitted even though it falls outside the designated core passage.
  • There is no “Chapter 2” to report on: Jude has exactly one chapter, and this document explicitly confirms full coverage of vv. 1–25 with no gaps.

Authorship/occasion note carried into every doctrinally loaded term below: Jude, “a servant of Jesus Christ and brother of James,” writes to warn a congregation about false teachers who have “crept in” and perverted grace into license, and to root the reader’s assurance in God’s power to keep and present believers blameless. This occasion drives three recurring lexical threads that must stay terminologically consistent across the whole letter: (1) τηρέω/φυλάσσω — “keep/guard/preserve,” running from v.1 (kept for Christ) through v.6 (angels kept for judgment) to v.21 (keep yourselves) and v.24 (able to keep you); (2) ἀσεβ- root — “ungodly/ungodliness,” the letter’s dominant moral-theological label for the false teachers; (3) αἰών/αἰώνιος — “eternal/age,” contrasting linear, once-for-all divine judgment and life with any cyclical framework.

κοινῆς σωτηρίαςkoinēs sōtērias”common/shared salvation”salvation held jointly by all believers, not an individual or elite attainment”our common salvation,” “the salvation we share”Reinforces the letter’s premise: one shared deposit of salvation, not competing private revelations from the false teachersসাধাৰণ পৰিত্ৰাণ (xadharôn poritran)Critical — “salvation” (σωτηρία) is a baseline term; MUST reuse পৰিত্ৰাণ exactly (never মুক্তি/মোক্ষ). “common” (κοινός, cf. baseline’s fellowship/κοινωνία root) underscores this salvation is not an individually negotiated liberation-path as in a guru-directed moksha journey; it is one salvation shared corporately by the whole believing community.
ἀνάγκην ἔσχονanankēn eschon”I had necessity/compulsion”felt it necessary, was compelled”I found it necessary,” “I felt compelled”Jude’s warning is not optional pastoral preference but a felt necessity given the crisisবাধ্য হ’লো (badhyô hôlo)Low
παρακαλῶνparakalōn”exhorting/urging”encouragement or urgent appeal, context-dependent”appealing to,” “urging,” “exhorting”Reuse of baseline παρακαλέω family (exhort) — here in the urgent-appeal sense, not the encouragement senseমিনতি কৰি (minoti kôri)Low — baseline term “exhort” (উৎসাহিত কৰা) is reserved for the encouragement sense; this occurrence is the entreaty sense per baseline’s own context-sensitivity note, hence মিনতি কৰি rather than উৎসাহিত কৰা.
ἐπαγωνίζεσθαιepagōnizesthai”to struggle/contend earnestly for,” from ἀγών (“contest, struggle,” root of English “agony/agonize”)to fight vigorously in defense of something, athletic/military contest imagery”contend for,” “fight for,” “strive for”The letter’s thesis verb — active, effortful defense of a fixed deposit of doctrine against active corruption, not passive believingসংগ্ৰাম কৰা (xôngram kôra)High — NEW term for the Jude curriculum. This is the doctrinal keyword for “Contending for the Faith Once Delivered.” Assamese সংগ্ৰাম carries connotations of struggle/battle appropriate to the athletic-military Greek image; must not be softened to a merely intellectual or devotional “reflecting on” the faith. No natural collision with Ekasarana vocabulary, but risk lies in under-translating the intensity (e.g., rendering as simple “believe firmly,” which would erase the militant defense sense central to the doctrine).
ἅπαξhapax”once, once for all”a single, non-repeatable, completed act”once for all,” “once and for all”Marks the deposit of faith as historically closed and complete — no ongoing revelation supplementing or replacing itএবাৰৰ babe (এবাৰৰ কাৰণে) (ebaror babe)Critical — pairs with παραδοθείσῃ below to form one of the book’s two most doctrinally load-bearing phrases. ἅπαξ’s “closed, non-repeatable” sense directly opposes any framework (e.g., an ongoing lineage of Satradhikar teaching, or a repeatable cycle of avatar-descents already flagged Critical in the Romans baseline for δεσηάρησις/incarnation) in which authoritative revelation continues to be delivered anew generation after generation.
παραδοθείσῃparadotheisē”having been handed down/delivered/entrusted”to pass on a tradition, teaching, or deposit from one party to another”delivered,” “entrusted,” “handed down”The faith is a received deposit, not a personally discovered insight — echoes Paul’s παράδοσις vocabularyসমৰ্পিত (xomorpitô)High — NEW term. Must be paired with ἅπαξ in translation (“এবাৰৰ babe সমৰ্পিত,” “once for all delivered”) so the phrase together conveys a closed, historically fixed transmission, not an open or evolving guru-lineage transmission (paramparā).
τοῖς ἁγίοιςtois hagiois”to the saints/holy ones”corporate designation for all believers”the saints,” “God’s holy people”Reuse of baseline “saints” — all believers, not an ascetic elite, are the recipients of this one depositপবিত্ৰ লোক (pobitrô lok)High — baseline term, reuse exactly.
πίστιςpistis”faith”(a) subjective trust in a person, (b) the objective content of what is believed — “the faith""the faith,” “the faith we hold”Distinct usage-nuance from Romans: here πίστις is used in its objective sense — the body of apostolic doctrine — not the subjective act of personal trust that dominates Romans 1–4. The Assamese rendering is unchanged (বিশ্বাস), but translators must note in-context that this is “the faith” (a defined deposit), not “faith” (an act of trusting).বিশ্বাস (biswax)Critical — baseline term, reuse exactly (do not substitute ভক্তি or শ্ৰদ্ধা). Flag for theologian review specifically because the objective/subjective double sense of one Assamese word could allow a reader to collapse “the faith once delivered” (a fixed body of teaching to defend) into “one’s personal faith-feeling” (a private devotional disposition), undercutting the doctrine of a fixed, defensible deposit.

Deliberately avoids ধৰ্মহীন/অধৰ্মী (which would root the word in ধৰ্ম, explicitly rejected in the baseline for its cosmic-duty/Ekasarana-sectarian associations) and avoids ভক্তিহীন (which would root it in ভক্তি, rejected in the baseline for its Ekasarana devotional-practice associations). ঈশ্বৰহীন (“God-less,” lacking any reverence toward the personal God) names irreverence toward the true God specifically, distinct from পাপী (“sinner,” a baseline-adjacent general moral-transgression term) which names the act rather than the fundamental orientation.
τὴν τοῦ θεοῦ ἡμῶν χάρινtēn tou theou hēmōn charin”the grace of our God”God’s unmerited favor”the grace of our God”Grace is being deliberately perverted, not merely misunderstood — an active doctrinal corruptionআমাৰ ঈশ্বৰৰ অনুগ্ৰহ (amar Iswôror anugrôh)Critical — baseline term “grace,” reuse অনুগ্ৰহ exactly.

Must be kept doctrinally tethered to grace being perverted (see AI requirements’ Rule 5 on grace-versus-merit/works, extended here to grace-versus-license).
τὸν μόνον δεσπότην καὶ κύριον ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦν Χριστὸνton monon despotēn kai kyrion hēmōn Iēsoun Christon”our only Master/Sovereign-Owner and Lord Jesus Christ”δεσπότης = absolute owner/ruler (root of English “despot”), distinct Greek word from κύριος though overlapping in reference to the same divine Person here”our only Sovereign and Lord,” “our only Master and Lord”Stacks two distinct titles of absolute divine authority on Jesus Christ in one clause — a strong deity-of-Christ statementআমাৰ একমাত্ৰ অধিপতি আৰু প্ৰভু যীচু খ্ৰীষ্ট (amar ekmatrô odhipoti aru prôbhu Yisu Khristô)Critical — δεσπότης is a NEW term requiring careful coinage. অধিপতি (“sovereign ruler/absolute master”) is deliberately chosen over স্বামী. স্বামী must be avoided here for a reason distinct from (and additional to) the baseline’s rejection of স্বামী for κύριος: in contemporary Assamese religious usage, “স্বামী”/“স্বামীজী” (Swami) is the standard honorific title for a Hindu monastic renunciate teacher. Using it for δεσπότης would risk assimilating Christ’s absolute divine ownership-authority to the status of a revered guru-ascetic, compounding the guru-collision risk the baseline already flags for “apostle.” κύριος itself continues to render প্ৰভু per baseline.

Egypt = মিচৰ (established Assamese Bible form).

This is a major thematic term across the whole letter (vv. 4, 6, 9, 15). বিচাৰ (bisar) is the standard Assamese word for judicial judgment/trial; risk lies in ensuring it is read as God’s personal, once-for-all forensic verdict — parallel to and consistent with the baseline’s treatment of “judgment”-adjacent doctrines such as universal accountability — not as an impersonal karmic reckoning that plays out across future rebirths.
δεσμοῖς ἀιδίοις ὑπὸ ζόφον τετήρηκενdesmois aidiois hypo zophon tetērēken”has kept [them] in eternal/everlasting chains under darkness”ἀΐδιος = everlasting (rare NT word, only here and Romans 1:20); ζόφος = gloom, thick darkness (a stronger, more ominous word than the ordinary σκότος)“kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness”First occurrence of the letter’s τηρέω (“keep”) thread applied negatively — God keeps the rebellious angels bound for judgment, just as (contrastingly) he keeps believers for glory (v.1, v.24)অনন্ত শিকলিৰে ঘোৰ আন্ধাৰত ৰাখিছে (ônôntô xikolire ghor andharôt rakhiche)Critical — αἰώνιος/ἀΐδιος (“eternal/everlasting”) is a NEW but doctrinally central term running through vv. 6, 7, 13, 21, 25. Render consistently as অনন্ত (anontô). This is High/Critical risk throughout the letter because Assamese Hindu and Ekasarana-Vaishnavite cosmology generally holds no eternal hell: souls are reborn or eventually liberated across cycles (সংসাৰ), and even severe punishment is temporally bounded within a cosmic cycle. অনন্ত must be defended at every occurrence as denoting a genuinely endless, non-cyclical state — a translator note at first occurrence is mandatory, on the same model as the baseline’s mandatory incarnation/avatar note.

δόξας δὲ βλασφημοῦσινdoxas de blasphēmousin”blaspheme/slander glorious ones”δόξα here (plural, δόξας) refers not to abstract “glory” but to glorious beings — most likely angelic dignitaries”slander the glorious ones,” “speak abusively of celestial beings”A distinct sense of δόξα from its far more common “glory” sense (as at v.24-25) — translators must not default to the baseline’s established glory-rendering মহিমা without adjustmentমহিমাশীল সত্তাসমূহৰ নিন্দা কৰে (môhimaxil xôttaxômuhor ninda kôre)High — NEW nuance flag. মহিমা (baseline “glory”) alone would misleadingly suggest abstract divine glory is being blasphemed; the Assamese must clarify these are glorious beings (angelic dignitaries), hence মহিমাশীল সত্তা (“glorious beings/entities”) rather than মহিমা alone.

Curriculum materials should clarify that Jude affirms the truthfulness of this particular saying without thereby placing the entire Book of Enoch on par with canonical Scripture — a distinction worth making explicit for an audience newly encountering the concept of a fixed New Testament canon. προφητεύω itself reuses the baseline-adjacent ভাববাণী কৰা pattern (cf. baseline “prophecy”/“prophet”).

Assamese প্ৰাণিক (“of the soul/natural life”) is chosen to avoid words rooted in আত্মা (which would blur with পবিত্ৰ আত্মা, “Holy Spirit”) while still conveying “governed by mere natural/soul-life, not the Spirit.” Risk: could be misread through a Hindu/Vedantic body-soul (deha-atma/jiva) hierarchy in which “soul” (jiva/atma) is itself the higher, spiritual element seeking liberation from the body — the opposite valence from Jude’s usage, where ψυχικός/soulish is the lesser, unregenerate category contrasted with the Spirit-filled state. Requires theologian review and an explanatory note at first occurrence.
πνεῦμα μὴ ἔχοντεςpneuma mē echontes”not having the Spirit”πνεῦμα here = the Holy Spirit (not merely “spirit” generically), given the ψυχικός contrast”not having the Spirit,” “devoid of the Spirit”The false teachers lack the regenerating, indwelling Holy Spirit — the ultimate diagnostic mark distinguishing them from genuine believersআত্মা নথকা (atma nôthôka)Critical — must reuse baseline পবিত্ৰ আত্মা for “the Spirit” in this sense (even though the Greek here says simply πνεῦμα without ἅγιον, context requires the full theological referent, the Holy Spirit); rendering must not be read as merely “lacking spirit/vitality” in a generic vital-force sense, which would drain the verse of its regeneration doctrine entirely.

This document formally extends the Romans baseline’s contextual restriction on কৃপা (“permitted for ordinary compassion/mercy in non-salvific contexts only”) because Jude’s dominant doctrine — “Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering” — requires কৃপা in an explicitly salvific, eschatological sense (mercy leading to “eternal life,” ζωὴ αἰώνιος). This extension must be flagged for human theologian sign-off before Phase 2 processing, since it revises rather than merely applies an existing baseline entry. কৃপা here must still be clearly distinguished, per the baseline’s existing rationale, from the Puranic pattern of a deity’s কৃপা as a negotiated response to austerity/devotion (which would collapse it into বৰ/অনুগ্ৰহ’s rejected alternatives) — Jude’s mercy is God’s initiative toward the helpless, received while “waiting,” not obtained through devotional performance. ζωὴ αἰώνιον (“eternal life”) is likewise a NEW registry entry, অনন্ত জীৱন, standing in the same Critical risk category as পৰিত্ৰাণ (salvation) for the identical reason: it must never be assimilated to মুক্তি/মোক্ষ (liberation from rebirth).

ἔλεος ὑμῖν καὶ εἰρήνη καὶ ἀγάπη πληθυνθείηeleos hymin kai eirēnē kai agapē plēthyntheiē”mercy and peace and love be multiplied to you”πληθύνω = to multiply, increase; a triadic epistolary blessing (unusual — most NT letters open with “grace and peace” rather than “mercy, peace, and love”)“may mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you”Sets the letter’s pastoral tone before the polemic begins — introduces both ἔλεος/mercy (the letter’s key pastoral term, culminating in vv.21-23) and ἀγάπη/love (also culminating in v.21)কৃপা, শান্তি, আৰু প্ৰেম তোমালোকৰ মাজত বৃদ্ধি হওক (kripa, xanti, aru prem tumalokôr majôt briddhi hôok)High — first occurrence of ἔλεος/mercy (কৃপা, see the extended note at v.21) and of the letter’s ἀγάπη/love thread (প্ৰেম, see the note at v.1/v.12/v.21). শান্তি (peace) reuses the baseline term exactly.

Τῷ δὲ δυναμένῳ φυλάξαι ὑμᾶς ἀπταίστουςTō de dynamenō phylaxai hymas aptaistous”to him who is able to keep/guard you without stumbling”φυλάσσω = to guard, watch over, protect (near-synonym of τηρέω, used here for stylistic variation at the letter’s climactic doxology); ἄπταιστος = without stumbling/falling (rare word)“to him who is able to keep you from stumbling”Climactic restatement of the letter’s keeping-theme (τηρέω/φυλάσσω) — now explicitly as the doctrinal answer/resolution to every danger described in vv.4-19উজুতি নোখোৱাকৈ তোমালোকক ৰক্ষা কৰিবলে সক্ষম জনৰ ওচৰত (ujuti nokhowakoi tumalokôk rôkkha kôribole xokkhôm jônôr ocorôt)Critical — φυλάσσω functions as a synonym of τηρέω within the same thematic thread; render with the same ৰক্ষা কৰা root established at v.1 so the thread reads as one unbroken theological argument across the whole letter, resolving in this final doxology.
στῆσαι κατενώπιον τῆς δόξης αὐτοῦ ἀμώμουςstēsai katenōpion tēs doxēs autou amōmous”to set/present [you] blameless before his glory”ἵστημι = to cause to stand, present; ἄμωμος = without blemish, blameless (originally a sacrificial-purity term, applied here to persons); δόξα here in its more common “glory” sense, unlike the plural “glorious beings” sense at v.8”to present you blameless before his glory”The doctrinal climax “Presented Blameless” — believers, guarded by God’s power through every danger described in the letter, will finally stand faultless in God’s own presenceতাৰ মহিমাৰ আগত নিষ্কলঙ্কভাৱে থিয় কৰাই ৰাখিবলে (tar mohimar agot nixkôlôngkôbhawe thiyô korai rakhibole)Critical — ἄμωμος (blameless/unblemished) is a NEW term central to the letter’s climactic doctrine; render নিষ্কলঙ্ক (nixkôlôngko, “without blemish/stain”), explicitly forensic and positional — this is a status conferred through being kept by Christ’s power, not a state of accumulated moral perfection achieved through the believer’s own effort, and must not be assimilated to a karma-free state attained through purified accumulated merit. δόξα here reuses baseline মহিমা (glory) — note the deliberate contrast with the distinct “glorious beings” sense flagged at v.8 to prevent translator confusion between the two senses within one short letter.
ἐν ἀγαλλιάσειen agalliasei”with exultation/exceeding joy”ἀγαλλίασις = a strong, exuberant joy, often used of eschatological joy”with great joy,” “with exultant joy”The blameless presentation before God is accompanied by overflowing joy, not fear — the letter’s positive resolutionমহা আনন্দৰে (moha anôndôre)Low-Medium

μόνῳ θεῷ σωτῆρι ἡμῶν διὰ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶνmonō theō sōtēri hēmōn dia Iēsou Christou tou kyriou hēmōn”to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord”μόνος = only, sole, exclusive; σωτήρ = Savior (noun form of the σῴζω/σωτηρία root underlying baseline πৰিত্ৰাণ)“to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord”Explicit monotheistic exclusivity (“only God”) combined with Christ-mediated salvation — a strong Trinitarian-adjacent statement naming God as sole Savior while crediting Jesus Christ as the mediating agentআমাৰ একমাত্ৰ ত্ৰাণকৰ্তা ঈশ্বৰ, যীচু খ্ৰীষ্ট আমাৰ প্ৰভুৰ মাধ্যমেদি (amar ekmatrô ponитranôkorta Iswôr, Yisu Khristô amar prôbhur madhyômedi) — [see glossary for finalized রূপ: পৰিত্ৰাণকৰ্তা]Critical — σωτήρ (Savior) is a NEW registry entry directly derived from the baseline’s Critical-risk পৰিত্ৰাণ (salvation): render পৰিত্ৰাণকৰ্তা (poritranôkorta, “the one who gives/accomplishes salvation”), keeping the root visibly shared with পৰিত্ৰাণ for terminological consistency. “Only God” (μόνος θεός) reuses baseline ঈশ্বৰ with an explicit exclusivity modifier একমাত্ৰ (“the only/sole”), paralleling the exclusivity already required for “Lord” (প্ৰভু) in the baseline.
δόξα μεγαλωσύνη κράτος καὶ ἐξουσίαdoxa megalōsynē kratos kai exousia”glory, majesty, might, and authority”four distinct Greek nouns stacked for doxological emphasis: δόξα (glory, honor), μεγαλωσύνη (greatness/majesty, a rare NT word, cf. Hebrews 1:3), κράτος (might, dominion, forceful power), ἐξουσία (authority, right to rule)“glory and majesty, dominion and power,” “glory, majesty, power, and authority”Cumulative ascription of the totality of divine sovereignty to God through Christ — the letter’s climactic act of worship, directly answering the false teachers’ rejection of κυριότης/authority in v.8মহিমা, মহানতা, পৰাক্ৰম, আৰু অধিকাৰ (mohima, mohanôta, porakrom, aru odhikar)High — মহিমা reuses baseline (glory); মহানতা (majesty), পৰাক্ৰম (might/power), and অধিকাৰ (authority) are NEW terms, each kept lexically distinct from one another and from the baseline’s ঈশ্বৰৰ শক্তি (power of God) so that the four-fold doxological stacking is not flattened into repetition in Assamese.
πρὸ παντὸς τοῦ αἰῶνος καὶ νῦν καὶ εἰς πάντας τοὺς αἰῶναςpro pantos tou aiōnos kai nyn kai eis pantas tous aiōnas”before all the age(s) and now and unto all the ages”αἰών = age, eon, a long era of time; here stacked (singular “before every age,” plural “unto all the ages”) to express comprehensive, boundless eternity”before all time, and now, and forevermore”Closing statement of God’s eternity — before creation, in the present, and without end — the fitting doctrinal capstone answering every “eternal” (αἰώνιος) reference earlier in the letter (vv. 6, 7, 13, 21)সকলো কালৰ আগেয়ে, বৰ্তমান, আৰু চিৰকাললৈকে (xôkôlo kalôr agôye, bortoman, aru cirokalôloi)High — αἰών (age/eon) is a NEW term rendered কাল (“age/era/time”) here to distinguish it from the related but distinct অনন্ত (eternal, an adjective describing unending duration, used throughout for αἰώνιος). Flag: Assamese Hindu cosmology’s “yuga” concept (a bounded, repeating cosmic age) is a near-homonym risk area — a translator note should clarify that Jude’s αἰών-stacking asserts one continuous, non-cyclical eternity (before creation, now, forever), not a sequence of repeating cosmic ages each ending in dissolution and renewal.
