Core Glossary
Core Glossary — James (English → Assamese)
Curriculum: James Status legend:
- [REUSED] — term already fixed in the baseline Romans
translation_memory.json; rendering reused exactly, no deviation permitted. - [NEW] — term first defined for the James curriculum in this document; proposed for addition to translation memory pending Phase 1 Step 2 doctrine analysis and human theologian review.
Risk tiers follow the baseline framework: Critical (doctrine-destroying if mistranslated; mandatory theologian review every occurrence), High (significant syncretism/confusion risk; mandatory theologian review), Medium (clarity risk, native-speaker review), Low (automated review sufficient).
Faith and Works
| Term | Greek / Transliteration | Assamese | Risk | Status | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| faith | πίστις / pistis | বিশ্বাস | Critical | [REUSED] | Same lexical term as Romans; in James 2:14–26 the risk is contextual — the nature of faith is being examined, not its role as the ground of justification. Mandatory harmonizing note required. |
| works | ἔργα / erga | কৰ্ম | Critical | [NEW] | Highest-risk lexical item in the whole book: unavoidable collision with pan-Hindu karma doctrine (karma-mārga, merit-accumulation toward liberation from সংসাৰ). Mandatory translator note at every occurrence in 1:22–25 and 2:14–26: these are the fruit/evidence of grace-given faith, never merit earning right standing. |
| justified / justification (demonstrative sense) | δικαιόω / dikaioō (Jas 2:21,24,25) | ধাৰ্মিক বুলি গণ্য কৰা | Critical | [REUSED — sense-extended] | Same phrase as baseline’s forensic “justification,” but here denotes public vindication/demonstration of already-given righteous standing, not its initial forensic ground. Mandatory harmonizing note required at every occurrence to prevent apparent contradiction with Romans 3–4. |
| imputed righteousness (Gen 15:6 citation) | ἐλογίσθη…εἰς δικαιοσύνην / elogisthē…eis dikaiosynēn (Jas 2:23) | আৰোপিত ধাৰ্মিকতা | Critical | [REUSED] | Direct quotation of the same OT text cited in Romans 4:3; rendering MUST be textually identical across both documents. |
| ”not by faith alone” | οὐκ ἐκ πίστεως μόνον / ouk ek pisteōs monon (Jas 2:24) | কেৱল বিশ্বাসৰেই নহয় | Critical | [NEW] | The most theologically contested clause in the book; render precisely without softening or over-correcting. Mandatory human theologian review every occurrence. |
| dead (of faith) | νεκρά / nekra (Jas 2:17,26) | মৃত | High | [NEW] | Must preserve the stark force: not “weak/immature” faith but faith that is not genuine at all. |
| show / demonstrate | δεῖξον / deixon (Jas 2:18) | দেখুওয়া | Medium | [NEW] | Works as evidence, not as an added meritorious cause. |
| worked together | συνήργει / synērgei (Jas 2:22) | একেলগে কাম কৰিছিল | Medium-High | [NEW] | Must not imply works contribute independent merit alongside faith. |
| was perfected / matured | ἐτελειώθη / eteleiōthē (Jas 2:22) | সম্পূৰ্ণ হৈছিল | High | [NEW] | Never সিদ্ধ (siddha — yogic self-attainment). |
| doer of the word | ποιητὴς λόγου / poiētēs logou (Jas 1:22–25) | বাক্যৰ পালনকৰ্তা | High | [NEW] | Cross-reference কৰ্ম risk; avoid legalistic-merit overtone. |
Trials and the Testing of Faith
| Term | Greek / Transliteration | Assamese | Risk | Status | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| trial / testing | πειρασμός / peirasmos (Jas 1:2,12) | পৰীক্ষা | High | [NEW] | Must be lexically distinct from “temptation” below, despite shared Greek root. |
| temptation | πειράζω / peirazō (Jas 1:13–14) | প্ৰলোভন | High | [NEW] | God is never its source; arises from ἐπιθυμία. Distinct word required from πειρασμός/পৰীক্ষা. |
| testing/genuineness | δοκίμιον / dokimion (Jas 1:3) | পৰীক্ষাৰ প্ৰকৃততা | Medium | [NEW] | The proven quality trial produces. |
| endurance | ὑπομονή / hypomonē (Jas 1:3–4; 5:11) | সহিষ্ণুতা | Medium | [NEW] | Distinct from ধৈৰ্য্য (patience, ch.5) — two different Greek words. |
| perfect / complete | τέλειος / teleios (Jas 1:4,17,25; 3:2) | সম্পূৰ্ণ | High | [NEW] | Never সিদ্ধ (siddha, yogic-attainment collision). |
| double-minded | δίψυχος / dipsychos (Jas 1:8) | দ্বিমনা | Low-Medium | [NEW] | Descriptive coinage; no cultural collision. |
| desire | ἐπιθυμία / epithymia (Jas 1:14) | কামনা | Medium | [NEW] | Requires framing as illicit/disordered desire, not neutral or devotional longing. |
| sin | ἁμαρτία / hamartia (Jas 1:15) | পাপ | High | [REUSED] | |
| death | θάνατος / thanatos (Jas 1:15) | মৃত্যু | Low | [NEW] |
Wisdom from Above

|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| wisdom | σοφία / sophia (Jas 1:5; 3:13–17) | প্ৰজ্ঞা | High | [NEW] | Collision risk with jñāna as a self-attained liberating path (jñāna-mārga). Pair with “ঈশ্বৰৰ পৰা” (from God) to mark as freely-given gift, per baseline’s spiritual_gifts pattern. |
| wisdom from above | σοφία ἄνωθεν / sophia anōthen (Jas 3:13–17) | ওপৰৰ পৰা অহা প্ৰজ্ঞা | High | [NEW] | “From above” language must not resonate with yogic-ascent transcendent-knowledge (para-vidyā) attainment. |
| earthly wisdom | ἐπίγειος / epigeios (Jas 3:15) | পৃথিৱীৰ | Medium | [NEW] | |
| natural/unspiritual wisdom | ψυχική / psychikē (Jas 3:15) | মানুহৰ স্বভাৱৰ | Medium-High | [NEW] | Use descriptive phrase, not a literal “soul-ish” coinage, to avoid confusion with আত্মা. |
| demonic wisdom | δαιμονιώδης / daimoniōdēs (Jas 3:15) | ভূতৰ | Medium-High | [NEW] | Shares risk profile with δαιμόνια below. |
| jealousy / selfish ambition | ζῆλος / ἐριθεία (Jas 3:14,16) | ঈৰ্ষা / স্বাৰ্থপৰতা | Low | [NEW] | |

| fruit of righteousness | καρπὸς δικαιοσύνης / karpos dikaiosynēs (Jas 3:18) | ধাৰ্মিকতাৰ ফল | High | [REUSED] | Reuses ধাৰ্মিকতা; consistency required with core-passage righteousness cluster. |
Favoritism and the Poor
| Term | Greek / Transliteration | Assamese | Risk | Status | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| favoritism | προσωπολημψία / prosōpolēmpsia (Jas 2:1,9) | পক্ষপাতিত্ব | High | [NEW] | Must be read broadly to include caste/ethnic/tribal hierarchy present in Assamese social structure, not merely personal bias. |
| poor | πτωχός / ptōchos (Jas 1:9; 2:2–6) | দৰিদ্ৰ | Medium | [NEW] | |

| image of God | εἰκὼν θεοῦ / eikōn theou (Jas 3:9) | ঈশ্বৰৰ সাদৃশ্য | Critical | [NEW] | Never প্ৰতিমূৰ্তি / মূৰ্তি (idol/deity-image vocabulary) — would suggest humans are literal cult-images, importing idol-veneration register. |
| teacher | διδάσκαλος / didaskalos (Jas 3:1) | শিক্ষক | Medium | [NEW] | Never গুৰু (Satradhikar guru-lineage collision). |
| demons | δαιμόνια / daimonia (Jas 2:19) | ভূত | Medium-High | [NEW] | Distinguish from Assamese/Northeast Indian bhūt-pret folk-spirit tradition; these are personal, fallen, rebellious spiritual beings under God’s authority. |
Worldliness versus Friendship with God
| Term | Greek / Transliteration | Assamese | Risk | Status | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| world | κόσμος / kosmos (Jas 1:27; 4:4) | পৃথিৱী | Medium | [NEW] | Never জগত (māyā/manifest-world) or সংসাৰ (reserved for rebirth cycle per baseline). |
| friendship with the world | φιλία τοῦ κόσμου / philia tou kosmou (Jas 4:4) | পৃথিৱীৰ সৈতে বন্ধুত্ব | High | [NEW] | Must use the same বন্ধু root as φίλος θεοῦ (2:23) to preserve James’s deliberate literary antithesis. |

| vapor / mist | ἀτμίς / atmis (Jas 4:14) | ভাপ / কুঁৱলী | Low | [NEW] | Positive cultural bridge (Brahmaputra valley mist imagery). |
| will of the Lord | θέλημα τοῦ κυρίου / thelēma tou kyriou (Jas 4:15) | প্ৰভুৰ ইচ্ছা | Medium | [NEW] | Never the folk-fatalistic “যদি ভগৱানৰ ইচ্ছা” framing (ভগৱান is baseline-rejected). |
Prayer and Healing
| Term | Greek / Transliteration | Assamese | Risk | Status | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| sick / weak | ἀσθενέω / astheneō (Jas 5:14) | অসুস্থ হয় | Low | [NEW] | |
| elders of the church | πρεσβύτεροι τῆς ἐκκλησίας / presbyteroi tēs ekklēsias (Jas 5:14) | মণ্ডলীৰ পৰিচালক-বৃন্দ | Medium | [NEW] | Reuses মণ্ডলী; never গুৰু-title framing. |

Patience and the Lord’s Return
| Term | Greek / Transliteration | Assamese | Risk | Status | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| coming/return of the Lord | παρουσία τοῦ κυρίου / parousia tou kyriou (Jas 5:7–8) | প্ৰভুৰ আগমন | Critical | [NEW] | New registry item required, parallel to baseline’s incarnation entry: must not be assimilated to the cyclical Kalki-avatar/Yuga eschatology of Puranic-Vaishnavite tradition. Mandatory distinguishing translator note at every occurrence. |
| patience / longsuffering | μακροθυμία / makrothymia (Jas 5:7,8,10) | ধৈৰ্য্য | Medium | [NEW] | Distinct Greek word from ὑπομονή/সহিষ্ণুতা (ch.1); keep both distinct. |
| farmer / early and late rain | γεωργός, πρόϊμος, ὄψιμος (Jas 5:7) | কৃষক / প্ৰথম আৰু চেষ বৰষুণ | Low | [NEW] | Positive cultural bridge with Assam’s agrarian, monsoon-dependent farming culture. |
| example / patience of Job | ὑπόδειγμα, ὑπομονή Ἰώβ (Jas 5:10–11) | উদাহৰণ, সহিষ্ণুতা (ইয়োবৰ) | Low | [NEW] | Job = ইয়োব, established Assamese OT proper name. |
| swear an oath | ὀμνύω / omnyō (Jas 5:12) | শপত খাই কথা কওক | Low | [NEW] |
Confession and Restoration
| Term | Greek / Transliteration | Assamese | Risk | Status | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|

| turn back / restore | ἐπιστρέφω / epistrephō (Jas 5:19–20) | ঘূৰাই আনা | Medium | [NEW] | Spiritual restoration through gospel truth, not ritual re-purification/re-initiation. |
| wander / go astray | πλανάω / planaō (Jas 5:19) | ভুল পথে যায় | Low | [NEW] | |

| body | σῶμα / sōma (Jas 2:26) | শৰীৰ | Low | [NEW] | |
| human spirit/breath (non-Trinitarian sense) | πνεῦμα / pneuma (Jas 2:26) | আত্মা (unmodified) | Medium | [NEW] | Must be distinguished from পবিত্ৰ আত্মা (Holy Spirit); modifier পবিত্ৰ reserved exclusively for the divine Person. |

This glossary extends, and must never contradict, the baseline translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json. All [NEW] entries are proposed for formal addition to translation memory pending Phase 1 Step 2 (doctrine analysis) and human theologian review, per the escalation and update procedures defined in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md.
Critical Risk Terms
God
Approved rendering: ঈশ্বৰ
Transliteration: Iswôr
Doctrine: God
Rejected alternatives: ভগৱান, পৰমেশ্বৰ
Inherited from Romans package. The one true, personal God, source of every good and perfect gift (James 1:17) and the sole giver of wisdom (1:5) and grace (4:6).
Lord
Approved rendering: প্ৰভু
Transliteration: prôbhu
Doctrine: Deity and Lordship of Christ in James
Rejected alternatives: স্বামী, ঈশ্বৰ
Inherited from Romans package. In James, applied to Jesus Christ at 2:1 (‘the Lord Jesus Christ of glory’) and invoked in 5:14 (‘in the name of the Lord’) and 5:7-8 (‘the coming of the Lord’). Must retain exclusive, supreme force in every occurrence, never one honored figure’s title among other venerated figures or gurus in Assamese devotional address.
Jesus
Approved rendering: যীচু
Transliteration: Yisu
Doctrine: Deity and Lordship of Christ in James
Rejected alternatives: ঈছা
Inherited from Romans package.
Christ
Approved rendering: খ্ৰীষ্ট
Transliteration: Khrishtô
Doctrine: Deity and Lordship of Christ in James
Inherited from Romans package transliteration table (12_ai_translation_requirements.md). Established Assamese form; used consistently in James 1:1, 2:1.
Father
Approved rendering: পিতা
Transliteration: pita
Doctrine: God
Rejected alternatives: ব্ৰহ্মা, সৃষ্টিকৰ্তা
Inherited from Romans package. James 1:17 (‘Father of lights’) and 1:27 (‘God the Father’) reuse this term; see father_of_lights entry below for the compound.
Righteousness
Approved rendering: ধাৰ্মিকতা
Transliteration: dharmikôta
Doctrine: Faith and Works
Rejected alternatives: ধৰ্ম, পুণ্য, ন্যায়
Inherited from Romans package. Root for ধাৰ্মিক (righteous one, 5:6), ধাৰ্মিকতাৰ ফল (fruit of righteousness, 3:18). Never ধৰ্ম.
Justification
Approved rendering: ধাৰ্মিক বুলি গণ্য কৰা
Transliteration: dharmik buli gonyô kôra
Doctrine: Justification: Forensic Declaration vs. Demonstrative Vindication
Rejected alternatives: ক্ষমা পোৱা, পুণ্য লাভ কৰা, সঠিক প্ৰমাণিত হ’ল
Inherited from Romans package (forensic sense, Rom 3-4). James 2:21,24,25 reuse this SAME fixed phrase but in a demonstrative/vindicating sense: Abraham’s already-given righteous standing publicly verified through obedient action, not a second forensic ground. MANDATORY harmonizing translator note at every James occurrence distinguishing this from the Romans forensic sense, per the baseline’s own Theological Consistency Rules. See justified_by_works entry for the James-specific application.
Imputed Righteousness
Approved rendering: আৰোপিত ধাৰ্মিকতা
Transliteration: aropitô dharmikôta
Doctrine: Justification: Forensic Declaration vs. Demonstrative Vindication
Rejected alternatives: অৰ্জিত ধাৰ্মিকতা
Inherited from Romans package. James 2:23 quotes the identical Genesis 15:6 text Paul cites in Romans 4:3. MUST be rendered textually identical to the Romans 4:3 rendering; any divergence would visibly break the curriculum’s cross-document consistency and suggest two different doctrines of imputation.
Salvation
Approved rendering: পৰিত্ৰাণ
Transliteration: poritran
Doctrine: Faith and Works
Rejected alternatives: মুক্তি, মোক্ষ, নিস্তাৰ
Inherited from Romans package. NEVER মুক্তি or মোক্ষ. Underlies James’s save/rescue language (1:21; 2:14; 5:20).
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: পবিত্ৰ আত্মা
Transliteration: pobitrô atma
Doctrine: God
Rejected alternatives: ব্ৰহ্ম, পৰমাত্মা
Inherited from Romans package. James 2:26 uses UNMODIFIED আত্মা for the human life-breath/spirit in the body/spirit analogy — this is NOT the Holy Spirit. The modifier পবিত্ৰ is reserved exclusively for the divine third Person of the Trinity; see human_spirit_breath entry below.
Works
Approved rendering: কৰ্ম
Transliteration: kormô
Doctrine: Faith and Works
Rejected alternatives: কাম
HIGHEST-PRIORITY FENCED TERM IN THE CURRICULUM. কৰ্ম is the unavoidable ordinary Assamese word for ‘deed/work’ but is also the name of the pan-Hindu karma doctrine (karma-mārga; merit accumulated toward liberation from the rebirth cycle, সংসাৰ). Every occurrence in James 1:22-25 and 2:14-26 requires a MANDATORY translator note: these কৰ্ম are the fruit and evidence of grace-given faith, never merit earning right standing. কাম rejected as too mundane/secular for the doctrinal weight James places on the term.
Justified By Works
Approved rendering: ধাৰ্মিক বুলি গণ্য কৰা
Transliteration: dharmik buli gonyô kôra
Doctrine: Justification: Forensic Declaration vs. Demonstrative Vindication
Rejected alternatives: সঠিক প্ৰমাণিত হ’ল, সিদ্ধ প্ৰমাণিত হ’ল
James 2:21,24,25 sense-extension of the baseline forensic phrase (justification entry above) to denote public vindication/demonstration that already-given righteous standing is real. MANDATORY note every occurrence: James describes evidence that verifies justifying faith, not a second works-based ground competing with Romans’ forensic declaration. Some circulating common-language Assamese editions substitute a different, weaker phrase here (e.g. সঠিক প্ৰমাণিত হ’ল); this MUST NOT be echoed — reuse the identical baseline phrase for cross-document consistency.
Not By Faith Alone
Approved rendering: কেৱল বিশ্বাসৰেই নহয়
Transliteration: kewôl biswaxôrei nôhôy
Doctrine: Justification: Forensic Declaration vs. Demonstrative Vindication
James 2:24. The single most theologically contested clause in the epistle. Must be rendered precisely — neither softened (dropping ‘কেৱল’/alone) to avoid apparent tension with Romans/Ephesians ‘faith alone,’ nor sharpened into a synergistic-merit statement. Mandatory human theologian review at every occurrence, translation and back-translation both.
Image Of God
Approved rendering: ঈশ্বৰৰ সাদৃশ্য
Transliteration: Iswôror xadrisyô
Doctrine: Image of God and Human Dignity
Rejected alternatives: প্ৰতিমূৰ্তি, মূৰ্তি
James 3:9 (εἰκὼν θεοῦ). Never প্ৰতিমূৰ্তি or মূৰ্তি, the standard Assamese/Hindu term for a worshiped deity-image or idol (mūrti-pūjā). Using idol vocabulary would suggest humans are literal cult-images of God or import an idol-veneration register entirely foreign to the intended meaning of representative likeness.
Righteous One
Approved rendering: ধাৰ্মিক
Transliteration: dharmik
Doctrine: Faith and Works
James 5:6 (δίκαιος). Reuses the ধাৰ্মিকতা root; consistency with the core-passage righteousness cluster is required.
Parousia Lords Return
Approved rendering: প্ৰভুৰ আগমন
Transliteration: prôbhur agômôn
Doctrine: Patience and the Lord’s Return
James 5:7-8 (παρουσία τοῦ κυρίου). NEW Critical registry item, parallel to the baseline’s incarnation/দেহধাৰণ entry. Assamese Vaishnavite/Puranic eschatology anticipates Kalki, a final avatar of Vishnu closing the current Kali Yuga to restart a new cosmic cycle. Christ’s parousia is linear, unique, and history-ending, not cycle-renewing. MANDATORY distinguishing translator note at every occurrence. Never use অৱতাৰ-family vocabulary.
Healing Save Raise
Approved rendering: সুস্থ কৰিব / তুলিব
Transliteration: xustho kôribô / tulibô
Doctrine: Prayer and Healing
Rejected alternatives: পুনৰুত্থান
James 5:15 (σῴζω / ἐγείρω). MUST NOT use পুনৰুত্থান, reserved exclusively for Christ’s unique bodily resurrection; using it for ordinary physical recovery from a sickbed would dilute that term’s doctrinal force everywhere else in the curriculum.
Pure Religion
Approved rendering: উপাসনা
Transliteration: upasona
Doctrine: Pure Religion and Practical Holiness
Rejected alternatives: ধৰ্ম
James 1:26-27 (θρησκεία). Never ধৰ্ম, despite English ‘religion’ naturally suggesting it — avoids importing the baseline’s entire ধৰ্ম collision profile (righteousness/law/Ekasarana sectarian-identity) into this softer ethical-practice context.
High Risk Terms
Law
Approved rendering: বিধান
Transliteration: bidhan
Doctrine: Church Leadership and Order / Covenant
Rejected alternatives: ধৰ্ম, নিয়ম
Inherited from Romans package. Never ধৰ্ম. Used across James 2:8-12 (royal law, transgressor) and 1:25, 4:11.
Sin
Approved rendering: পাপ
Transliteration: pap
Doctrine: Sin
Rejected alternatives: অধৰ্ম, অশুচিতা
Inherited from Romans package. Used throughout James (1:15; 2:9; 4:17; 5:15,16,20).
Grace
Approved rendering: অনুগ্ৰহ
Transliteration: anugrôh
Doctrine: Grace Given to the Humble
Rejected alternatives: কৃপা, দয়া, বৰ, সৌভাগ্য, পুণ্য
Inherited from Romans package. James 4:6 quotes Proverbs 3:34 (‘God gives grace to the humble’); must preserve the grace-not-merit contrast against বৰ (boon-for-devotion/austerity) so humility is the receiving posture, never the meritorious cause.
Glory
Approved rendering: মহিমা
Transliteration: môhima
Doctrine: Deity and Lordship of Christ in James
Rejected alternatives: দেৱজ্যোতি, তেজ
Inherited from Romans package. James 2:1 applies this term directly to Jesus Christ (‘the Lord Jesus Christ of glory’); see glory_of_christ entry below for the James-specific application.
Faith
Approved rendering: বিশ্বাস
Transliteration: biswax
Doctrine: Faith and Works
Rejected alternatives: শ্ৰদ্ধা, ভক্তি
Inherited from Romans package. In James 2:14-26 the risk is contextual, not lexical: without a harmonizing note, Assamese James 2 can appear to contradict Assamese Romans 3-4 on the same page of the same Bible. Never ভক্তি (bhakti-devotion).
Dead Faith
Approved rendering: মৃত
Transliteration: mrito
Doctrine: Faith and Works
Rejected alternatives: দুৰ্বল, অসম্পূৰ্ণ
James 2:17,26. Must preserve stark force: not deficient/immature faith but faith that is not genuine at all. Never soften to দুৰ্বল (weak) or অসম্পূৰ্ণ (incomplete), which would suggest a doctrine of degrees of saving faith.
Faith And Works Cooperate
Approved rendering: একেলগে কাম কৰিছিল
Transliteration: ekelôge kam kôrisilô
Doctrine: Faith and Works
James 2:22 (συνήργει). Must not be read as implying works contribute independent merit alongside faith toward earning right standing; faith is root, works its living expression.
Faith Perfected
Approved rendering: সম্পূৰ্ণ হৈছিল
Transliteration: sompurnô hôisilô
Doctrine: Faith and Works
Rejected alternatives: সিদ্ধ হৈছিল
James 2:22 (ἐτελειώθη). Never সিদ্ধ, the Hindu/yogic term for a self-attained ‘perfected being’ (siddha-puruṣa) through ascetic/yogic practice. Faith reaching mature, full expression through obedient action — a maturation, not an added missing ingredient.
Doer Of The Word
Approved rendering: বাক্যৰ পালনকৰ্তা
Transliteration: bakyôr palônkôrta
Doctrine: Faith and Works
James 1:22-25. Cross-reference the কৰ্ম caution: ‘doer’ language must not slide toward legalistic law-merit connotation. Contrasted with ‘কেৱল শুনাই থাকা লোক’ (mere hearer).
Save Rescue Generic
Approved rendering: ৰক্ষা কৰা
Transliteration: rôkkha kôra
Doctrine: Faith and Works
James 2:14, rhetorical: ‘Can that [dead] faith save him?’ Anchored to the baseline’s পৰিত্ৰাণ concept; must never drift toward মুক্তি/মোক্ষ vocabulary.
Trial Testing
Approved rendering: পৰীক্ষা
Transliteration: porikhā
Doctrine: Trials and the Testing of Faith
James 1:2,12. Must be lexically distinct from ‘temptation’ (প্ৰলোভন) despite the shared Greek root πειρασμός/πειράζω, or 1:13 (‘God tempts no one’) will appear to contradict 1:2’s positive trials. Mandatory translator note at first occurrence explaining the deliberate lexical split.
Temptation
Approved rendering: প্ৰলোভন
Transliteration: prôlobhôn
Doctrine: Trials and the Testing of Faith
James 1:13-14. Enticement toward sin arising from inner ἐπιθυμία, never from God. Distinct word required from trial_testing/পৰীক্ষা.
Perfect Complete
Approved rendering: সম্পূৰ্ণ
Transliteration: sompurnô
Doctrine: Trials and the Testing of Faith
Rejected alternatives: সিদ্ধ
James 1:4,17,25; 3:2 (τέλειος). NEVER সিদ্ধ (yogic self-attained perfection). Wholeness/maturity reaching its intended goal, not moral flawlessness or ascetic attainment. Recurs across three doctrines; any lapse under stylistic pressure is significant each time.
Wisdom
Approved rendering: প্ৰজ্ঞা
Transliteration: prôgya
Doctrine: Wisdom from Above
James 1:5; 3:13-17 (σοφία). Collision risk with jñāna (self-attained liberating knowledge, jñāna-mārga). Always pair with ‘ঈশ্বৰৰ পৰা’ (from God) on the pattern of the baseline’s spiritual_gifts/আত্মিক বৰ entry, to mark as a freely-given gift obtained simply by asking, not a state achieved through spiritual technique.
Wisdom From Above
Approved rendering: ওপৰৰ পৰা অহা প্ৰজ্ঞা
Transliteration: opôror pôra ôha prôgya
Doctrine: Wisdom from Above
James 3:13-17 (σοφία ἄνωθεν). ‘From above’ language must not resonate with yogic-ascent transcendent-knowledge (para-vidyā) attainment; must be framed as a freely-given gift, not an achieved state.
Natural Wisdom
Approved rendering: মানুহৰ স্বভাৱৰ
Transliteration: manuhor xôbhawôr
Doctrine: Wisdom from Above
James 3:15 (ψυχική). Use a descriptive phrase rather than a literal ‘soul-ish’ coinage, to avoid confusion with আত্মা (soul/spirit).
Demonic Wisdom
Approved rendering: ভূতৰ
Transliteration: bhutôr
Doctrine: Wisdom from Above
James 3:15 (δαιμονιώδης). Shares the same collision-risk profile as demons/ভূত entry below.
Fruit Of Righteousness
Approved rendering: ধাৰ্মিকতাৰ ফল
Transliteration: dharmikôtar fôl
Doctrine: Wisdom from Above
James 3:18 (καρπὸς δικαιοσύνης). Reuses ধাৰ্মিকতা; consistency required with the core-passage righteousness cluster.
Favoritism
Approved rendering: পক্ষপাতিত্ব
Transliteration: pôkkhôpatitwô
Doctrine: Favoritism and the Poor
James 2:1,9 (προσωπολημψία). Must be understood broadly, including caste, ethnic, and tribal social hierarchy present in Assamese society, not merely narrow personal bias, or James’s equalizing force toward the assembly is blunted.
Glory Of Christ
Approved rendering: মহিমা
Transliteration: môhima
Doctrine: Deity and Lordship of Christ in James
James 2:1 (‘the Lord Jesus Christ of glory’). Reuses baseline glory/মহিমা applied directly to Jesus — a high implicit Christology. Must retain exclusive deity-of-Christ force, not read as one honored figure’s glory among the avatar-splendor (tej/prabhā) imagery familiar from Ekasarana Vaishnavite theology of Krishna as Vishnu’s supreme avatar.
Royal Law
Approved rendering: ৰাজকীয় বিধান
Transliteration: rajkiyô bidhan
Doctrine: Favoritism and the Poor
James 2:8 (νόμος βασιλικός). Reuses বিধান; the law of neighbor-love, described as supreme, summarizing the whole law.
Hell Gehenna
Approved rendering: নৰক
Transliteration: nôrôk
Doctrine: Taming the Tongue
Rejected alternatives: এটা সময়ৰ কাৰাগাৰ
James 3:6 (γέεννα). Hindu Naraka is a temporary, purgatorial punishment-realm preceding the next rebirth within সংসাৰ; biblical Gehenna is final, unending judgment with no subsequent rebirth. Mandatory distinguishing note at first use, on the same pattern as the baseline’s resurrection/reincarnation distinction. Reject any qualifier implying temporariness.
Demons
Approved rendering: ভূত
Transliteration: bhut
Doctrine: Demons and Spiritual Reality
James 2:19 (δαιμόνια). Assamese and wider Northeast Indian folk religion carries a rich bhūt-pret (ghost/malevolent-spirit) tradition of fear and ritual appeasement. Mandatory clarifying note: these are personal, rebellious, fallen spiritual beings under God’s sovereign authority, not capricious nature-spirits to be placated by ritual.
Friendship With World
Approved rendering: পৃথিৱীৰ সৈতে বন্ধুত্ব
Transliteration: prithivior xoite bôndhutwô
Doctrine: Worldliness versus Friendship with God
James 4:4 (φιλία τοῦ κόσμου). Must use the same বন্ধু root as friend_of_god/ঈশ্বৰৰ বন্ধু (2:23) to preserve James’s deliberate literary antithesis.
Anointing With Oil
Approved rendering: তেল সানি
Transliteration: tel xani
Doctrine: Prayer and Healing
Rejected alternatives: অভিষেক
James 5:14 (ἀλείψαντες ἐλαίῳ). NEVER অভিষেক, the standard Assamese/Hindu term for ritual consecration of a deity-image (mūrti abhiṣeka) or royal coronation, which would frame this simple act of caring prayer as a quasi-sacramental ritual-power ceremony. Use the plain descriptive তেল সানি.
In Name Of Lord
Approved rendering: প্ৰভুৰ নামত
Transliteration: prôbhur namôt
Doctrine: Deity and Lordship of Christ in James
James 5:14 (ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ κυρίου). Reuses প্ৰভু; standard invocation formula carrying the baseline’s Critical Lordship weight.
Prayer Of Faith
Approved rendering: বিশ্বাসৰ প্ৰাৰ্থনা
Transliteration: biswaxôr prarthôna
Doctrine: Prayer and Healing
James 5:15 (εὐχὴ τῆς πίστεως). Reuses বিশ্বাস; continuity with the faith doctrine cluster.
Prayer Of Righteous
Approved rendering: ধাৰ্মিক লোকৰ প্ৰাৰ্থনা
Transliteration: dharmik lokôr prarthôna
Doctrine: Prayer and Healing
James 5:16 (δέησις δικαίου). Reuses the ধাৰ্মিক root; exemplified by Elijah’s effective prayer.
Save Soul From Death
Approved rendering: প্ৰাণ ৰক্ষা কৰিব (মৃত্যুৰ পৰা)
Transliteration: pran rôkkha kôribô (mrityur pôra)
Doctrine: Confession and Restoration
James 5:20 (σώσει ψυχὴν ἐκ θανάτου). Continuity with the salvation doctrine cluster; reuses ৰক্ষা কৰা.
Perfect Law Of Liberty
Approved rendering: স্বাধীনতাৰ সম্পূৰ্ণ বিধান
Transliteration: xadhinôtar sompurnô bidhan
Doctrine: Faith and Works
James 1:25 (νόμος τέλειος τῆς ἐλευθερίας). Reuses বিধান and সম্পূৰ্ণ; must not be flattened into either Torah-legalism or dharma-as-cosmic-duty.
Medium Risk Terms
Kingdom Of God
Approved rendering: ঈশ্বৰৰ ৰাজ্য
Transliteration: Iswôror rajyô
Doctrine: Favoritism and the Poor
Rejected alternatives: ঈশ্বৰৰ ৰাষ্ট্ৰ
Inherited from Romans package. James 2:5: the poor as heirs of the promised kingdom. Retain baseline’s political-kingdom sensitivity note (Ahom-kingdom history).
Church
Approved rendering: মণ্ডলী
Transliteration: môndoli
Doctrine: Church Leadership and Order
Rejected alternatives: মন্দিৰ, নামঘৰ
Inherited from Romans package. NEVER নামঘৰ or মন্দিৰ. Used at James 5:14 (‘elders of the church’).
Peace
Approved rendering: শান্তি
Transliteration: xanti
Doctrine: Peace with God
Rejected alternatives: সুখ, প্ৰশান্তি
Inherited from Romans package. James 2:16 uses this word in the everyday farewell-blessing sense (‘go in peace’), NOT the forensic peace-with-God sense of Romans 5:1. See peace_greeting entry below for the James-specific fencing note; do not over-theologize this occurrence.
Demonstrate Faith
Approved rendering: দেখুওয়া
Transliteration: dekhuwa
Doctrine: Faith and Works
James 2:18. Works function as demonstrative evidence, not a supplementary ground of salvation; reinforce this framing in accompanying study notes.
Friend Of God
Approved rendering: ঈশ্বৰৰ বন্ধু
Transliteration: Iswôror bôndhu
Doctrine: Worldliness versus Friendship with God
Rejected alternatives: ঈশ্বৰৰ মিত্ৰ
James 2:23, of Abraham. Use বন্ধু (not মিত্ৰ) consistently here and at 4:4’s ‘friendship with the world’ to preserve James’s deliberate literary antithesis. Covenant intimacy without hierarchy — distinguish from a guru-disciple devotional relationship structure common in Ekasarana Dharma bhakta address.
Peace Greeting
Approved rendering: শান্তিৰে যাওক
Transliteration: xantire jawôk
Doctrine: Faith and Works
James 2:16. A conventional social farewell blessing offered instead of material help — its emptiness is James’s point. Must not be over-theologized as Romans 5:1’s forensic ‘peace with God’; a translator note should mark this occurrence as the everyday relational-farewell sense.
Testing Genuineness
Approved rendering: পৰীক্ষাৰ প্ৰকৃততা
Transliteration: porikkhar prôkritôta
Doctrine: Trials and the Testing of Faith
James 1:3 (δοκίμιον). The proven, tested genuineness that trial produces in faith.
Endurance
Approved rendering: সহিষ্ণুতা
Transliteration: xohishnuta
Doctrine: Trials and the Testing of Faith
James 1:3-4; 5:11 (ὑπομονή). Must be kept distinct from ধৈৰ্য্য (patience, ch.5, μακροθυμία) so the two separate Greek terms are not flattened into one Assamese word.
Desire
Approved rendering: কামনা
Transliteration: kamona
Doctrine: Trials and the Testing of Faith
James 1:14 (ἐπιθυμία). Requires framing as illicit/disordered desire (e.g., ‘মন্দ কামনা’); কামনা alone can carry neutral or devotional-longing connotations in some Assamese registers.
Earthly Wisdom
Approved rendering: পৃথিৱীৰ
Transliteration: prithiviôr
Doctrine: Wisdom from Above
James 3:15 (ἐπίγειος). False wisdom sourced in merely earthly, this-worldly values.
Poor
Approved rendering: দৰিদ্ৰ
Transliteration: dôridrô
Doctrine: Favoritism and the Poor
James 1:9; 2:2-6 (πτωχός). Standard term; part of James’s theological reversal (the poor exalted).
Rich
Approved rendering: ধনী
Transliteration: dhôni
Doctrine: Favoritism and the Poor
James 1:10-11; 2:6; 5:1 (πλούσιος). Standard term; warned of transience and coming judgment.
Assembly Gathering
Approved rendering: সভা
Transliteration: xôva
Doctrine: Church Leadership and Order
James 2:2 (συναγωγή). A distinct Greek word from ἐκκλησία/মণ্ডলী. Never নামঘৰ (banned, Ekasarana-specific) or মণ্ডলী itself (reserved for ἐκκλησία); use a non-technical ‘gathering’ term.
Heirs
Approved rendering: উত্তৰাধিকাৰী
Transliteration: uttôradhikari
Doctrine: Favoritism and the Poor
James 2:5 (κληρονόμοι). Cross-reference the baseline’s adoption/inheritance theology (পোহাপুত্ৰ স্বৰূপে গ্ৰহণ).
Transgressor
Approved rendering: বিধান লঙ্ঘনকাৰী
Transliteration: bidhan lônghônkari
Doctrine: Favoritism and the Poor
James 2:9,11 (παραβάτης). One who violates even a single point of the law; reuses বিধান.
Mercy
Approved rendering: দয়া
Transliteration: doya
Doctrine: Mercy and Impartial Judgment
James 2:13 (ἔλεος). Per the baseline’s own carve-out, দয়া is acceptable for ordinary, non-salvific mercy contexts such as this one.
Tongue
Approved rendering: জিভা
Transliteration: jiva
Doctrine: Taming the Tongue
James 1:26; 3:5,6,8-10 (γλῶσσα). Central term for this doctrine; render consistently across all occurrences.
Teacher
Approved rendering: শিক্ষক
Transliteration: xikkhôk
Doctrine: Church Leadership and Order
Rejected alternatives: গুৰু
James 3:1 (διδάσκαλος). Never গুৰু, which carries Ekasarana Satradhikar guru-lineage authority structures not equivalent to this NT teaching role.
World
Approved rendering: পৃথিৱী
Transliteration: prithivi
Doctrine: Worldliness versus Friendship with God
Rejected alternatives: জগত, সংসাৰ

Transliteration: Iswôror xoite xôtrutā
Doctrine: Worldliness versus Friendship with God
James 4:4 (ἔχθρα τοῦ θεοῦ). Active hostility toward God; the severity of worldliness must not be softened.
Devil
Approved rendering: শয়তান
Transliteration: Xoitan
Doctrine: Worldliness versus Friendship with God
James 4:7 (διάβολος). Established Assamese Bible transliteration; must remain a personal being, not an abstract evil-principle.
Will Of The Lord
Approved rendering: প্ৰভুৰ ইচ্ছা
Transliteration: prôbhur icchā
Doctrine: Patience and the Lord’s Return
Rejected alternatives: যদি ভগৱানৰ ইচ্ছা
James 4:15 (θέλημα τοῦ κυρίου). Reuses প্ৰভু; must not collapse into the folk-fatalistic idiom ‘যদি ভগৱানৰ ইচ্ছা,’ which uses ভগৱান, explicitly rejected by the baseline’s god entry. Genuine submission to God’s sovereign lordship over the future, not fatalistic resignation.
Lord Of Hosts
Approved rendering: বাহিনীগণৰ প্ৰভু
Transliteration: bahinigônor prôbhu
Doctrine: Social Justice and Oppression of Laborers
James 5:4 (κύριος Σαβαώθ). Reuses প্ৰভু; standard established OT divine title, invoked on behalf of the exploited poor.
Patience Longsuffering
Approved rendering: ধৈৰ্য্য
Transliteration: dhoirjyô
Doctrine: Patience and the Lord’s Return
James 5:7,8,10 (μακροθυμία). Keep distinct from সহিষ্ণুতা (ch.1’s endurance-under-pressure, ὑπομονή) so the two Greek terms are not flattened together.
Elders Of Church
Approved rendering: মণ্ডলীৰ পৰিচালক-বৃন্দ
Transliteration: môndolior pôricalôk-brindô
Doctrine: Church Leadership and Order
James 5:14 (πρεσβύτεροι τῆς ἐκκλησίας). Reuses মণ্ডলী; avoid any গুৰু-title framing per the baseline’s apostle-entry caution against collapsing church office into the Satradhikar guru-succession role.
Confess Sins
Approved rendering: স্বীকাৰ কৰা
Transliteration: swikar kôra
Doctrine: Confession and Restoration
James 5:16 (ἐξομολογέω). Clarify this is mutual, horizontal confession among believers, not a formal act requiring a ritual specialist or intermediary.
Turn Back Restore
Approved rendering: ঘূৰাই আনা
Transliteration: ghurai ana
Doctrine: Confession and Restoration
James 5:19-20 (ἐπιστρέφω). Clarify this is spiritual restoration through gospel truth, not a ritual re-purification/re-initiation rite analogous to śuddhi-style reintegration practices or Satra re-entry rites.
Cover Sins
Approved rendering: পাপৰ সমষ্টি ঢাকিব
Transliteration: papôr xômosti dhakibô
Doctrine: Confession and Restoration
Rejected alternatives: পাপৰ প্ৰায়শ্চিত্ত হ’ব
James 5:20 (καλύψει πλῆθος ἁμαρτιῶν). Reuses পাপ. Never render with an implicit merit-transaction/atonement sense (e.g. ‘পাপৰ প্ৰায়শ্চিত্ত হ’ব’), which would wrongly assign atoning power to the human act of restoring a wanderer.
Word Gospel Message
Approved rendering: বাক্য
Transliteration: bakyô
Doctrine: Faith and Works
James 1:18,21-23 (λόγος). The gospel message, implanted and saving, to be received, retained, and obeyed. Distinguish from generic speech.
Human Spirit Breath
Approved rendering: আত্মা
Transliteration: atma
Doctrine: Faith and Works
James 2:26 (πνεῦμα). The animating human life-breath/spirit, NOT the Holy Spirit. Must be clearly distinguished from পবিত্ৰ আত্মা (Holy Spirit); the modifier পবিত্ৰ is reserved exclusively for the divine Spirit. A brief clarifying note is recommended at this verse.
Father Of Lights
Approved rendering: জ্যোতিৰ পিতা
Transliteration: jyotir pita
Doctrine: God
James 1:17 (πατὴρ τῶν φώτων). Reuses পিতা. Light-imagery for God should avoid resonance with Puranic descriptions of a deity’s radiant luster (tej/prabhā), per the baseline’s caution on glory/মহিমা.
James Author Name
Approved rendering: যাকোব
Transliteration: Jakob
Doctrine: Church Leadership and Order
Ἰάκωβος. Established Assamese Bible tradition renders this name as ‘Jakob,’ not a transliteration of the English ‘James.’ Book title: যাকোবৰ পত্ৰ. Never transliterate the English form.
