Core Glossary
Core Glossary — 2 John (English → Azerbaijani)
This glossary covers every load-bearing theological term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, spanning the entire book of 2 John (a single 13-verse chapter). Terms already fixed in the Romans baseline translation_memory.json are marked Reused and carry forward their baseline rendering, risk tier, and rationale unchanged. All other terms are New to this curriculum and are proposed here for Phase 2 translation memory intake, pending theologian/native-speaker review per risk tier.
Legend
- Status: Reused (from Romans baseline TM) / New (proposed in this curriculum)
- Risk: Critical / High / Medium / Low (per baseline risk_definitions)
- Verses: all occurrences within 2 John
| Term (English) | Greek | Azerbaijani Rendering | Status | Risk | Doctrine | Verses | Key Risk Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Truth | ἀλήθεια | Həqiqət | New | High | Walking in Truth and Love | 1,1,2,3,4 | Collides with Sufi four-stage mystical path (şəriət-təriqət-mərifət-həqiqət), where həqiqət names elite esoteric God-realization; must be taught as communal fidelity to apostolic testimony, available to all believers, not an advanced mystical attainment. |
| Love | ἀγάπη / ἀγαπάω | Məhəbbət / Sevmək | New | Medium | Walking in Truth and Love | 1,3,5,6,6 | Positive resonance with Sufi divine-love (eşq/məhəbbət) vocabulary, but must be defined per v.6 as obedience to Christ’s commandments, not mystical union or romantic sentiment. |
| Mercy | ἔλεος | Mərhəmət | New | Medium | (Salutation triad) | 3 | Distinct from Lütf (grace); baseline rejected mərhəmət as a substitute for grace, but it is the correct standalone term for “mercy” itself here — keep grace/mercy/peace as three distinct terms. |
| Grace | χάρις | Lütf | Reused | High | Grace | 3 | Baseline rendering and rationale apply unchanged. |
| Peace | εἰρήνη | Sülh | Reused | Medium | Peace with God | 3 | Baseline rendering and rationale apply unchanged. |
| God the Father | θεοῦ πατρός | Allah Ata | Reused | Critical | Deity of Christ / Father | 3 | Combines baseline Allah + Ata; no change. |
| Jesus Christ, Son of the Father | Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ υἱοῦ τοῦ πατρός | Atanın Oğlu İsa Məsih | Reused (doctrine) | Critical | Sonship of Christ / Deity of Christ | 3 | Direct trigger of baseline Allahın Oğlu doctrine; render without qualification; mandatory theologian review. |
| Elder | πρεσβύτερος | Ağsaqqal | New | Medium | Church Office | 1 | Strong positive cultural resonance (Caucasus elder tradition); must clarify this is apostolic-era teaching authority, not customary village-arbitration authority. |
| Elect lady | ἐκλεκτῇ κυρίᾳ | Seçilmiş xanım | New | Medium | Church as God’s People / Election (root) | 1,5,13 | Referential ambiguity (individual woman vs. personified church) should not be resolved dogmatically; connects to but should not over-invoke full corporate election doctrine. |
| Children | τέκνα | Övladlar | New | Medium | Church as God’s People | 1,4,13 | Same referential ambiguity as “elect lady”; individual family or congregation members. |
| Known (the truth) | γινώσκω (ἐγνωκότες) | Tanımaq / bilmək | New | Low | Inspiration/Knowledge of Truth | 1 | Relational/experiential knowing, not bare information. |
| Abide / remain | μένω | Qalmaq | New | High | Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ | 2,9,9 | Central verb of the “Perseverance” doctrine; must convey durative relational fidelity, not passive staying-in-place. Flag every occurrence for theologian review. |
| Forever / the age | αἰῶνα | Əbədi olaraq / əbədilik | New | Low | Eschatology (background) | 2 | Standard idiom. |
| Rejoice / joy | χαίρω / χαρά | Sevinmək / Sevinc | New | Low | Christian Fellowship (background) | 4,12 | Keep register distinct from the withheld χαίρειν greeting-formula (vv.10-11) despite the shared Greek root. |
| Walk (ethical conduct) | περιπατέω | Yaşamaq | New | Medium | Walking in Truth and Love | 4,6,6 | Loses literal “walking” imagery; teaching material should surface the metaphor explicitly on first use. |
| Commandment | ἐντολή | Əmr | New | Medium | Walking in Truth and Love / Perseverance | 4,5,6,6 | Keep distinct from baseline Qanun (Mosaic Law) and from şəriət-style legal-command vocabulary; this is Christ’s specific relational directive to love. |
| New commandment / from the beginning | ἐντολὴ καινή / ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς | Yeni əmr / Əvvəldən | New | Medium | Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ | 5,5,6 | John denies novelty; teach continuity with apostolic tradition, not a fresh ruling. |
| Father | πατήρ | Ata | Reused | Critical | Adoption / Father | 4,9 | Baseline rendering and rationale apply unchanged. |
| Ask / request | ἐρωτάω | Xahiş edirəm | New | Low | (Pastoral tone) | 5 | Standard. |
| Lady | κυρία | Xanım | New | Medium | Church as God’s People (background) | 1,5 | Feminine form of κύριος (cf. baseline Rəbb); referential ambiguity as under “elect lady.” |
| Heard | ἀκούω | Eşitmisiniz | New | Low | Perseverance (background) | 6 | Standard. |
| Deceiver | πλάνος | Aldadıcı | New | Medium | Warning against Deceivers | 7,7 | Distinct from generic “yalançı” (liar); specifically doctrinal misleading. |
| World | κόσμος | Dünya | New | Medium | Warning against Deceivers (background) | 7 | Must convey Johannine moral-spiritual sense, not neutral geography. |
| Confess | ὁμολογέω | İqrar etmək | New | High | Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation | 7 | Parallels Islamic Shahada “iqrar”; useful bridge but risks formulaic-recitation framing over ongoing doctrinal commitment. Mandatory theologian review. |
| Jesus Christ | Ἰησοῦς Χριστός | İsa Məsih | Reused | Critical | Lordship/Deity of Christ | 3,7 | Baseline rendering and rationale apply unchanged; never bare İsa. |
| Coming in the flesh (Incarnation) | ἐρχόμενον ἐν σαρκί | İsa Məsihin bədəncə (cismən) gəldiyi | Reused (doctrine) | Critical | Incarnation | 7 | Direct trigger of baseline Bədən alma doctrine; never soften to disguise/appearance language. Mandatory theologian review on every occurrence. |
| Antichrist | ἀντίχριστος | Antimasih | New | Critical | Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation | 7 | Must never be rendered Dəccal (Islamic end-times deceiver figure with Imamate-resolution eschatology); teach as a present, plural, doctrinal-test category, not solely a future cosmic figure. Mandatory theologian review. |
| Watch yourselves | βλέπετε ἑαυτούς | Özünüzə fikir verin | New | Low | Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment | 8 | Standard. |
| Lose / forfeit | ἀπόλλυμι | İtirmək | New | Low | Perseverance (background) | 8 | Standard. |
| Worked (labored) | ἐργάζομαι | Zəhmət çəkmişik | New | Medium | Perseverance (background) | 8 | Refers to apostolic missionary labor, not reader’s own merit. |
| Full reward | μισθὸν πλήρη | Tam mükafat | New | High | Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ | 8 | Adjacent to Romans’ grace-vs-works polemic; clarify this concerns faithful perseverance’s fruit, not the ground of justification. |
| Go on ahead / transgress | προάγω | Təlimdən uzaqlaşan | New | High | Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ | 9 | Literal “goes ahead” risks sounding like commendable spiritual progress; must convey departure from, not advance beyond, Christ’s teaching. |
| Teaching / doctrine of Christ | διδαχή | Təlim (always as “Məsihin təlimi”) | New | High | Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ | 9,9,10 | Bare “təlim” is ambiguous with generic/Islamic religious instruction; always pair with “Məsihin,” on the İsa+Məsih naming pattern. |
| Does not have God / has the Father and the Son | θεὸν οὐκ ἔχει / τὸν πατέρα καὶ τὸν υἱὸν ἔχει | Allahı yoxdur / həm Ata, həm də Oğulu var | Reused (doctrine) | Critical | Sonship of Christ / Deity of Christ | 9 | Direct trigger of baseline Allahın Oğlu doctrine. Mandatory theologian review. |
| Bring (a teaching) | φέρω | Gətirmək | New | Low | Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment | 10 | Standard. |
| Receive (into house) | λαμβάνω | Qəbul etmək | New | Medium | Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment | 10 | Straightforward lexically; see cultural risk under “house.” |
| House / household | οἰκία | Ev | New | Medium (application) | Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment | 10 | Application-sensitivity risk: conflicts with highly valued Azerbaijani qonaqpərvərlik (hospitality) norm; frame as narrowly scoped doctrinal-discernment instruction, not general inhospitality license. |
| ”Greetings” (withheld formula) | χαίρειν | Salam vermək / xoş gəldin demək | New | High (application) | Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment | 10,11 | Withholding a greeting is an unusually strong, publicly legible social signal in Azerbaijani salamlaşma culture; flag for both native-speaker and theologian pastoral review. |
| Participate / share in (negative) | κοινωνέω | Şərik olmaq | New | High | Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment | 11 | Same Greek root as baseline Ünsiyyət (fellowship), but negative valence here (complicity in evil); must NOT reuse ünsiyyət vocabulary — document distinction in TM to prevent drift. |
| Fellowship (positive, background reference) | κοινωνία (root) | Ünsiyyət | Reused | Low | Christian Fellowship | (root only; not directly occurring in 2 John) | Baseline rendering retained for the positive sense; kept fully distinct from v.11’s negative Şərik olmaq. |
| Evil works | ἔργα πονηρά | Şər/pis əməllər | New | Medium | Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment | 11 | ”Əməllər” root is sensitive per Romans’ works-ledger caution (saleh əməllər); usage here is doctrinally correct (genuinely evil deeds) but flag to prevent drift into deeds-ledger framing elsewhere. |
| Write | γράφειν | Yazmaq | New | Low | (Epistolary background) | 12 | Standard. |
| Paper and ink | χάρτου καὶ μέλανος | Kağız və mürəkkəb | New | Low | (Material culture) | 12 | No doctrinal content; background note only. |
| Hope | ἐλπίζω | Ümid edirəm | New | Low | (Pastoral background) | 12 | Ordinary personal hope, not technical eschatological hope. |
| Face to face (mouth to mouth) | στόμα πρὸς στόμα | Üz-üzə | New | Low | (Idiom) | 12 | Natural Azerbaijani idiom substituted for literal “mouth to mouth” per idiom-handling rules. |
| Joy fulfilled/complete | χαρὰ πεπληρωμένη | Sevincimiz tam olsun | New | Low | Christian Fellowship (background) | 12 | Positive resonance term; bookends the letter’s opening joy (v.4). |
| Greets / sends greetings | ἀσπάζομαι | Salamlarını göndərir | New | Low | (Epistolary closing) | 13 | Keep conceptually distinct from the withheld χαίρειν greeting of vv.10-11 despite related sense. |
| Sister | ἀδελφή | Bacı | New | Low-Medium | Church as God’s People (background) | 13 | Likely spiritual-family sense (fellow believer); brief clarifying note recommended. |
| Elect / chosen | ἐκλεκτός/ἐκλεκτή | Seçilmiş | New (root reused) | Medium | Election (root doctrine) | 1,13 | Root shared with baseline Seçilmə (Election); functions primarily as honorific address here — do not over-theologize as invoking full Romans 9-11 corporate election doctrine. |
Cross-Reference to Baseline Escalation Rules
The following terms in this glossary trigger the mandatory human-theologian-review escalation rules already established in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md and must be routed accordingly in Phase 2:
- Incarnation content (v.7: “coming in the flesh” / Bədən alma)
- Sonship of Christ / Deity of Christ content (v.3, v.9: “Son of the Father” / “has the Father and the Son”)
- Antichrist (v.7: Antimasih — new Critical term, no direct baseline precedent, requires new doctrine-registry entry)
- Confession language (v.7: İqrar etmək — new High term parallel to Shahada iqrar)
- Perseverance/abiding language (v.2, v.9: Qalmaq) and teaching-of-Christ language (v.9,10: Məsihin təlimi) — new High terms central to this curriculum’s fourth doctrine, without direct baseline precedent, and therefore requiring first-use theologian sign-off before entering translation memory.
All new terms listed above must be added to an updated translation_memory.json (version increment) and bible_term_registry.json / doctrine_risk_registry.json entries before Phase 2 segment translation begins, per the Pre-flight Checklist in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md.
Critical Risk Terms
Father
Approved rendering: Ata
Transliteration: ah-TAH
Doctrine: Sonship and Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Yaradan (Creator, as a substitute to avoid relational language)
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package, no change. Appears in 2 John 1:4 (source of the love-commandment) and 1:9 (‘has the Father and the Son’). Retain baseline pastoral-framing guidance distinguishing relational, adoptive sonship from any claim of literal divine offspring, which tawhid forbids.
God
Approved rendering: Allah
Transliteration: ahl-LAHKH
Doctrine: Sonship and Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Tanrı (Turkish convention, not settled Azerbaijani IBT usage)
Original: θεός
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package, no change. In 2 John 1:9, possessing ‘God’ (Allah) is made explicitly contingent on possessing both the Father and the Son — this verse must never be softened.
Jesus
Approved rendering: İsa
Transliteration: ee-SAH
Doctrine: Sonship and Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: bare ‘İsa Peyğəmbər’ (Prophet Jesus, without Məsih)
Inherited from Romans package, no change. Never used bare in doctrinally significant contexts in 2 John; always paired as İsa Məsih (see jesus_christ entry).
Jesus Christ
Approved rendering: İsa Məsih
Transliteration: ee-SAH mah-SEEKH
Doctrine: Sonship and Deity of Christ / Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: bare İsa (signals only the Qur’anic prophet-Jesus), İsa Peyğəmbər
Original: Ἰησοῦς Χριστός
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package (combines baseline jesus + messiah entries), no change. Occurs in 2 John 1:3 and 1:7, the latter being the letter’s doctrinal fulcrum (‘do not confess Jesus Christ coming in the flesh’). Never rendered bare.
Son Of God
Approved rendering: Allahın Oğlu
Transliteration: ahl-lah-HUHN oh-loo
Doctrine: Sonship and Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Allahın sevimli qulu (God’s beloved servant)
Inherited from Romans package, no change. Underlies both ‘son_of_the_father’ (1:3) and ‘has_the_father_and_the_son’ (1:9) in this letter — 2 John 9 makes this the letter’s sharpest confrontation with tawhid by making possession of God contingent on possessing both Father and Son. Never soften to a servant/prophet euphemism.
Incarnation
Approved rendering: Bədən alma
Transliteration: bah-DAN ahl-MAH
Doctrine: Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: Allahın insan qiyafəsinə girməsi (God disguising himself in human form)
Original: ἐρχόμενον ἐν σαρκί
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package, no change. This general doctrine-name term governs the specific 2 John 1:7 phrase rendered as ‘coming_in_the_flesh’ below; in 2 John the doctrine is elevated to the single decisive test distinguishing authentic teachers from ‘the deceiver and the antichrist,’ raising the pastoral stakes beyond Romans’ more didactic treatment.
Messiah
Approved rendering: Məsih
Transliteration: mah-SEEKH
Doctrine: Sonship and Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: sadəcə bir peyğəmbər (merely a prophet)
Inherited from Romans package, no change. Component of İsa Məsih throughout 2 John; also the base for the new coinage ‘Antimasih’ (antichrist, see below), which must never be confused with Məsih itself.
Coming In The Flesh
Approved rendering: İsa Məsihin bədəncə (cismən) gəldiyi
Transliteration: ee-sah mah-see-HEEN bah-dan-JAH (jees-MAHN) gal-dee-YEE
Doctrine: Incarnation / Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: Allahın insan qiyafəsinə girməsi (disguise/appearance language, forbidden per baseline), İsanın göründüyü (Jesus ‘appeared’, softens real bodily coming)
New (this exact phrase), but directly built on and enforcing the Romans baseline’s Critical incarnation doctrine (Bədən alma). This is 2 John’s doctrinal crux (1:7): the single test distinguishing authentic teachers from ‘the deceiver and the antichrist.’ Must never be softened toward disguise or appearance language. Mandatory theologian review on every occurrence.
Antichrist
Approved rendering: Antimasih
Transliteration: ahn-tee-mah-SEEKH
Doctrine: Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: Dəccal (the Shia/folk-Islamic end-times deceiver figure, defeated by the returning Imam Mahdi and, in some traditions, a returning Isa)
Original: ἀντίχριστος
Category: Christology
New coinage, transparently built on the established Məsih. Dəccal MUST NEVER be used: it imports an elaborate cosmic-battle eschatology and Imamate-resolution narrative absent from John’s text, and collapses John’s present, plural, doctrinal-test category (‘many deceivers… this is… the antichrist’) into a single future folkloric figure. Teach as a present, plural, doctrinal-test category. Mandatory theologian review.
Has The Father And The Son
Approved rendering: Allahı yoxdur / həm Ata, həm də Oğulu var
Transliteration: ahl-lah-HUH yohkh-DOOR / hahm ah-TAH hahm dah oh-oo-LOO VAHR
Doctrine: Sonship and Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Allahın lütfündən məhrumdur (softened ‘lacks God’s favor’, loses the forensic ‘does not have God’ claim)
Original: θεὸν οὐκ ἔχει / τὸν πατέρα καὶ τὸν υἱὸν ἔχει
Category: Christology
New (this exact construction), directly triggering the baseline Critical Allahın Oğlu doctrine. 2 John 1:9: genuine relationship with God is defined as inseparably having both the Father and the Son; rejecting the Son forfeits relationship with the Father. Must not be softened. Mandatory human theologian review.
God The Father
Approved rendering: Allah Ata
Transliteration: ahl-LAHKH ah-TAH
Doctrine: Sonship and Deity of Christ
Original: θεοῦ πατρός
Category: God
New compound built entirely from baseline-reused Allah + Ata. 2 John 1:3. Source of grace, mercy, and peace, coordinated grammatically with ‘Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father’ as joint source — retain baseline pastoral-framing guidance on relational vs. literal-offspring readings.
Son Of The Father
Approved rendering: Atanın Oğlu İsa Məsih
Transliteration: ah-tah-NUHN oh-LOO ee-SAH mah-SEEKH
Doctrine: Sonship and Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: İsa Məsih, Atanın xidmətçisi (softened ‘the Father’s servant’, forbidden)
Original: Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ υἱοῦ τοῦ πατρός
Category: Christology
New (this exact phrase), directly triggering the baseline Critical Allahın Oğlu doctrine. 2 John 1:3 places Jesus Christ grammatically and functionally on equal footing with God the Father as joint source of grace, mercy, and peace — an implicit co-equality claim and the letter’s first, compressed statement of the doctrine fully unfolded in 1:9. Render without qualification; mandatory human theologian review.
High Risk Terms
Grace
Approved rendering: Lütf
Transliteration: LYUTF
Doctrine: Grace, Mercy, and Peace
Rejected alternatives: mərhəmət (mercy), kərəm (Persian-influenced ‘divine generosity’)
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package, no change. In 2 John 1:3 Lütf is the first of the grace-mercy-peace salutation triad, flowing jointly from God the Father and Jesus Christ the Son of the Father. Must remain a distinct term from Mərhəmət (mercy, new in this curriculum) — the two must never be merged or treated as synonyms in this triad.
Election
Approved rendering: Seçilmə
Transliteration: say-cheel-MAY
Doctrine: Election (Honorific Address)
Rejected alternatives: qismət (fate/fortune), yazı (what is ‘written’, fatalistic decree)
Inherited from Romans package, no change (root doctrine). In 2 John this root underlies the honorific ‘Seçilmiş xanım’ (1:1) and ‘Seçilmiş’ (1:13) — see those New entries below. Do not over-theologize every honorific occurrence into the full Romans 9-11 corporate-election doctrine, but never let it drift toward qismət-style fatalism either.
Truth
Approved rendering: Həqiqət
Transliteration: hah-kee-KAHT
Doctrine: Walking in Truth and Love
Rejected alternatives: doğruluq (mere factual correctness, too weak)
Original: ἀλήθεια
Category: Faith
New. Occurs 5x in 13 verses (1:1,1,2,3,4). Collides with the Sufi-influenced four-stage mystical path (şəriət→təriqət→mərifət→həqiqət), in which həqiqət names elite esoteric God-realization attained by advanced initiates only. Must be taught explicitly at first use as communal, apostolic-testimony-shaped fidelity available to every believer, not a mystical attainment reserved for the few.
Abide
Approved rendering: Qalmaq
Transliteration: kahl-MAKH
Doctrine: Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ
Rejected alternatives: passive ‘qalıb qalmaq’ (mere static remaining, loses relational fidelity sense)
Original: μένω
Category: Faith
New. 2 John 1:2, 1:9 (x2). The central verb of the Perseverance doctrine; matches established IBT Johannine usage (e.g. John 15’s ‘Məndə qalın’). Must convey durative relational fidelity to apostolic doctrine, not passive staying-in-place. Flag every occurrence for theologian review.
Confess
Approved rendering: İqrar etmək
Transliteration: eek-RAHR et-MAKH
Doctrine: Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: e’tiraf etmək (admission/confession in a legal or psychological sense, e.g. confessing a crime — wrong register)
Original: ὁμολογέω
Category: Christology
New. 2 John 1:7. Closely parallels the Islamic Shahada’s technical ‘iqrar’ (kəlmeyi-şəhadəti iqrar etmək), the formal recitation of the Muslim confession of faith. Genuine cognitive bridge, but risks a formulaic single-recitation reading rather than John’s sense of an ongoing doctrinal commitment maintained by abiding (see abide). Pair explicitly with Qalmaq in teaching material. Mandatory theologian review.
Full Reward
Approved rendering: Tam mükafat
Transliteration: TAHM mew-kah-FAHT
Doctrine: Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ
Rejected alternatives: qazanılmış mükafat (earned reward, drifts toward deeds-ledger framing)
Original: μισθὸν πλήρη
Category: Perseverance
New. 2 John 1:8. Sits immediately adjacent to the Romans baseline’s central grace-versus-works polemic (Lütf vs. saleh əməllər). Teaching material must clarify this reward concerns faithful perseverance and its fruit, not the ground of justification, which remains by grace through faith alone. Flag for theologian review wherever discussed alongside grace/works passages.
Goes On Ahead
Approved rendering: Təlimdən uzaqlaşan
Transliteration: tah-leem-DAHN oo-zahk-lah-SHAHN
Doctrine: Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ
Rejected alternatives: irəli gedən (literal ‘goes ahead’ — sounds like commendable spiritual advancement toward mərifət/həqiqət on the Sufi mystical path)
Original: προάγω
Category: Perseverance
New. 2 John 1:9. A literal ‘goes ahead’ rendering of προάγω risks sounding like commendable spiritual progress in Azerbaijani religious idiom; the rendering must make clear this is a departure from, not an advance beyond, Christ’s teaching. Flag for theologian review given direct bearing on Perseverance doctrine.
Teaching Of Christ
Approved rendering: Məsihin təlimi
Transliteration: mah-see-HEEN tah-lee-MEE
Doctrine: Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ
Rejected alternatives: bare təlim (ambiguous with generic or Islamic madrasa-style religious instruction)
Original: διδαχή
Category: Perseverance
New. 2 John 1:9 (x2), 1:10. Bare ‘təlim’ could denote any religious instruction; always pair with ‘Məsihin,’ on the same pattern as the İsa+Məsih naming convention, to keep the referent unambiguous. This is the doctrinal core of the Perseverance theme.
Greetings Withheld
Approved rendering: Salam vermək / xoş gəldin demək
Transliteration: sah-LAHM ver-MAKH / khohsh gal-DEEN deh-MAKH
Doctrine: Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment
Rejected alternatives: ehtiyatlı olun (softened ‘be cautious’, erases the deliberate withholding of a customary greeting)
Original: χαίρειν
Category: Hospitality
New. 2 John 1:10, 1:11. Azerbaijani salamlaşma (greeting) customs carry strong social weight; deliberately withholding a greeting is an unusually severe, publicly legible social signal, arguably more pointed than in the source culture. Flag for combined native-speaker and theologian pastoral review; never soften the withholding into mere caution.
Participate Negative
Approved rendering: Şərik olmaq
Transliteration: shah-REEK ohl-MAKH
Doctrine: Doctrinal Complicity and Evil Works
Rejected alternatives: ünsiyyətdə olmaq (baseline positive-sense ‘fellowship’ — FORBIDDEN here, would wrongly cast complicity in evil as Christian communion)
Original: κοινωνέω
Category: Hospitality
New. 2 John 1:11. Shares its Greek root (κοινωνέω/κοινωνία) with the baseline’s positive Ünsiyyət (fellowship), but here describes complicity in another’s evil deeds. HARD FENCE: never substitute Ünsiyyət vocabulary for this term or vice versa.
Medium Risk Terms
Peace
Approved rendering: Sülh
Transliteration: SYULKH
Doctrine: Grace, Mercy, and Peace
Rejected alternatives: rahatlıq (inner calm/comfort)
Original: εἰρήνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package, no change. Third term of the 2 John 1:3 salutation triad; relational peace from God, not psychological comfort.
Apostle
Approved rendering: Həvari
Transliteration: heh-vah-REE
Doctrine: Apostolic Authority of the Elder
Rejected alternatives: peyğəmbər (prophet-messenger), imam (in the Shia sense)
Inherited from Romans package, no change. Cross-referenced (not directly translated) in 2 John’s doctrine of the Elder: the letter’s author identifies himself as πρεσβύτερος/Ağsaqqal rather than Həvari, yet writes with equivalent apostolic-generation authority. Retain baseline caution against Imamate-shaped readings when teaching the Elder’s authority.
Love
Approved rendering: Məhəbbət
Transliteration: mah-hab-BAHT
Doctrine: Walking in Truth and Love
Rejected alternatives: eşq (mystical/romantic divine love, common in Sufi devotional poetry)
Original: ἀγάπη / ἀγαπάω
Category: Faith
New. Verb form Sevmək. Positive resonance with Sufi-influenced eşq/məhəbbət divine-love vocabulary, but must be anchored to 2 John 1:6’s own definition: love is obedience to Christ’s commandments, not mystical union or romantic sentiment. Avoid eşq entirely in doctrinal contexts.
Mercy
Approved rendering: Mərhəmət
Transliteration: mar-hah-MAHT
Doctrine: Grace, Mercy, and Peace
Rejected alternatives: kərəm (Persian-influenced devotional generosity)
Original: ἔλεος
Category: Salvation
New. 2 John 1:3 only. The Romans baseline rejects Mərhəmət as a SUBSTITUTE for Lütf (grace); here it is the correct standalone term for mercy itself, distinct from and coordinate with, not interchangeable with, grace. Keep all three salutation terms (Lütf/Mərhəmət/Sülh) lexically distinct.
Elder
Approved rendering: Ağsaqqal
Transliteration: ahgh-sahk-KAHL
Doctrine: Apostolic Authority of the Elder
Rejected alternatives: imam-adjacent clergy titles, bare müəllim (teacher, too generic), transliterated ‘presviter’ (foreign-sounding, wrong register)
Original: πρεσβύτερος
Category: Church
New. 2 John 1:1. Strong positive cultural resonance as a respected Caucasus community elder, but readers may map it onto customary village-elder arbitration authority rather than the specific apostolic-era doctrinal-teaching office John holds. Teaching material must clarify this is Spirit-authorized, apostolic-generation teaching authority, echoing the baseline’s caution against Imamate-style successive-authority readings of ‘apostle’ (Həvari).
Elect Lady
Approved rendering: Seçilmiş xanım
Transliteration: say-cheel-MEESH khah-NUHM
Doctrine: Church as God’s People and Spiritual Family
Original: ἐκλεκτῇ κυρίᾳ
Category: Church
New. 2 John 1:1, 1:5. Referential ambiguity (an individual Christian woman vs. a personified local church) is well attested in scholarship and must NOT be dogmatically resolved in the translation itself; preserve the ambiguity as the Greek does. Shares its root with baseline Seçilmə (Election) but functions primarily as honorific address here.
Children
Approved rendering: Övladlar
Transliteration: ohv-lahd-LAHR
Doctrine: Church as God’s People and Spiritual Family
Original: τέκνα
Category: Church
New. 2 John 1:1, 1:4, 1:13. Same referential ambiguity as elect_lady (biological family vs. congregation members); flag for consistent handling in teaching material rather than forcing a single reading.
Walk
Approved rendering: Yaşamaq
Transliteration: yah-shah-MAHKH
Doctrine: Walking in Truth and Love
Rejected alternatives: gəzmək (literal physical walking, loses the ethical-conduct metaphor entirely)
Original: περιπατέω
Category: Faith
New. 2 John 1:4, 1:6 (x2). Idiomatically correct rendering of περιπατέω but loses the vivid ‘walk’ imagery of the Greek ethical-conduct metaphor; teaching notes should surface the walking metaphor explicitly on first use.
Commandment
Approved rendering: Əmr
Transliteration: AHMR
Doctrine: Walking in Truth and Love / Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ
Rejected alternatives: şəriət-style comprehensive legal-command vocabulary
Original: ἐντολή
Category: Covenant
New. 2 John 1:4, 1:5, 1:6 (x2). Must be kept distinct from baseline Qanun (Mosaic Law, a Romans term) — this is Christ’s specific relational directive to love one another, not an open legal code.
New Commandment From Beginning
Approved rendering: Yeni əmr / Əvvəldən
Transliteration: yeh-NEE ahmr / av-val-DAHN
Doctrine: Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ
Original: ἐντολὴ καινή / ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς
Category: Covenant
New. 2 John 1:5, 1:6. John explicitly denies doctrinal novelty; readers may mishear ‘not a new commandment’ as diminishing its importance, or conflate ‘new commandment’ with a fresh ruling akin to a new fatwa. Teach continuity with apostolic tradition, not innovation.
Lady
Approved rendering: Xanım
Transliteration: khah-NUHM
Doctrine: Church as God’s People and Spiritual Family
Original: κυρία
Category: Church
New. 2 John 1:1, 1:5. Feminine form of κύριος (cf. baseline Rəbb, Lord); no doctrinal collision, but carries the same individual/congregation referential ambiguity as elect_lady; handle consistently across lesson materials.
Deceiver
Approved rendering: Aldadıcı
Transliteration: ahl-dah-duh-JUH
Doctrine: Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: yalançı (generic liar, too weak — loses the specifically doctrinal misleading sense)
Original: πλάνος
Category: False Teaching
New. 2 John 1:7 (x2). Denotes doctrinal misleading specifically, not mere dishonesty; must be consistently paired with the incarnation-denial content that defines it in this verse.
World
Approved rendering: Dünya
Transliteration: dewn-YAH
Doctrine: Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation
Original: κόσμος
Category: False Teaching
New. 2 John 1:7. Standard word, but teaching material must clarify the Johannine moral-spiritual sense (a world susceptible to deception) rather than a neutral geographic sense.
Worked Labored
Approved rendering: Zəhmət çəkmişik
Transliteration: zah-MAHT chak-mee-SHEEK
Doctrine: Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ
Original: ἐργάζομαι
Category: Perseverance
New. 2 John 1:8. Refers to the elder’s/apostolic missionary labor invested in the community’s growth in truth, not the readers’ own merit before God; distinct from Romans’ salehlik/works-of-the-law polemic.
Receive Into House
Approved rendering: Qəbul etmək
Transliteration: gah-BOOL et-MAKH
Doctrine: Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment
Original: λαμβάνω
Category: Hospitality
New. 2 John 1:10. Lexically straightforward; the significant risk is cultural-pragmatic (see house_household).
House Household
Approved rendering: Ev
Transliteration: EHV
Doctrine: Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment
Original: οἰκία
Category: Hospitality
New. 2 John 1:10. Application-sensitivity risk, not a lexical one: Azerbaijani culture places exceptionally high value on qonaqpərvərlik (hospitality). Teaching material must frame this instruction as narrowly scoped to itinerant teachers actively spreading incarnation-denial, not a general license for inhospitality. Flag for native-speaker pastoral review.
Evil Works
Approved rendering: Şər/pis əməllər
Transliteration: SHAHR/PEES ah-mahl-LAIR
Doctrine: Doctrinal Complicity and Evil Works
Original: ἔργα πονηρά
Category: Discernment
New. 2 John 1:11. ‘Əməllər’ is the same root flagged in the Romans baseline as central to the Islamic works-ledger framework (saleh əməllər); usage here is doctrinally correct (genuinely evil deeds) but must not be allowed to drift into deeds-ledger framing when discussing ‘full reward’ (1:8).
Sister
Approved rendering: Bacı
Transliteration: bah-JUH
Doctrine: Church as God’s People and Spiritual Family
Original: ἀδελφή
Category: Church
New. 2 John 1:13. Likely a fellow female believer in the faith community, paralleling the letter’s pastoral-family language; clarify biological vs. spiritual-family sense in teaching notes, consistent with the elect_lady/children ambiguity.
Elect Chosen
Approved rendering: Seçilmiş
Transliteration: say-cheel-MEESH
Doctrine: Election (Honorific Address)
Rejected alternatives: qismət-adjacent fatalistic framing (forbidden)
Original: ἐκλεκτός / ἐκλεκτή
Category: Church
New (root reused from baseline Seçilmə). 2 John 1:1, 1:13. Functions primarily as an honorific term of address here; do not over-theologize as invoking the full Romans 9-11 corporate-election doctrine, though the shared root usefully connects to it for advanced teaching. Never evoke qismət/alın yazısı.
Low Risk Terms
Fellowship
Approved rendering: Ünsiyyət
Transliteration: ewn-see-YAHT
Doctrine: Christian Joy and Fellowship
Rejected alternatives: qardaşlıq (brotherhood, generic/civic)
Original: κοινωνία (root)
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package, no change. Retained in this curriculum ONLY for the positive root sense; kept fully and permanently distinct from 2 John 1:11’s negative-valence ‘participate_negative’ (Şərik olmaq) despite the shared κοινωνία root. Never substitute Ünsiyyət for Şərik olmaq or vice versa.

Transliteration: tah-nuh-MAHKH / beel-MAKH

Transliteration: seh-veen-MAKH / seh-VEENJ
Doctrine: Christian Joy and Fellowship
Original: χαίρω / χαρά
Category: Fellowship
New. 2 John 1:4, 1:12. Keep this register strictly distinct from the withheld χαίρειν greeting-formula of 1:10-11 (see greetings_withheld), despite the shared Greek root, so readers do not sense an internal contradiction within the same short letter.
Ask Request
Approved rendering: Xahiş edirəm
Transliteration: khah-HEESH eh-dee-RAM
Doctrine: Walking in Truth and Love
Original: ἐρωτάω
Category: Faith
New. 2 John 1:5. Standard term; sets the letter’s pastoral, appealing tone rather than a peremptory command.

Doctrine: (Epistolary background)
Original: γράφειν
Category: Epistolary

Transliteration: kah-UHZ vay mew-rak-KAB
Doctrine: (Material culture background)
Original: χάρτου καὶ μέλανος
Category: Epistolary
New. 2 John 1:12. Purely descriptive material-culture detail; no doctrinal risk.
Hope
Approved rendering: Ümid edirəm
Transliteration: ew-MEED eh-dee-RAM
Doctrine: (Pastoral background)
Original: ἐλπίζω

Rejected alternatives: üz-üzə mürəkkəb literal ‘mouth to mouth’ calque (would sound strange in Azerbaijani)

Doctrine: Christian Joy and Fellowship
Original: ἀσπάζομαι
