Executive Summary

Executive Summary — James (Yaqub Məktubu)

English → Azerbaijani | Phase 1 Complete

Why it matters: James is the highest-collision-density book in this curriculum family to date. Its vocabulary — deeds, wisdom, patience, perfection, healing, confession — overlaps with everyday Azerbaijani Shia-majority devotional speech far more heavily than Romans’ more purely forensic-soteriological vocabulary did. The core passage, James 2:14-26, sits directly on top of Azerbaijan’s dominant mizan (deeds-weighing) judgment framework, making it the single highest-stakes passage translated under this Language Package to date. Get this book wrong, and it will read as Scripture contradicting itself — James “overturning” Romans — which is a live line of Islamic apologetic argument for scriptural corruption (tahrif).

Key findings:

  • 14 doctrines analyzed across all 5 chapters (full-book coverage confirmed; no chapter silently omitted — see 11_doctrine_analysis.md).
  • 11 of 14 doctrines (79%) require human theologian review — 3 Critical (Faith and Works; Patience and the Lord’s Return; Imago Dei) + 8 High (Trials, Wisdom from Above, Favoritism and the Poor, Worldliness, Prayer and Healing, Confession and Restoration, Pure and Undefiled Religion, Law of Liberty).
  • 42 of 78 registered terms (54%) require human theologian review — 9 Critical + 33 High, per assets/bible_term_registry.json (James).
  • Two entirely new Critical-tier doctrines not present anywhere in the Romans baseline: Imago Dei (James 3:9, colliding with tanzih’s “nothing is like Him,” Qur’an 42:11) and the Parousia/zühur-avoidance (James 5:7-8, colliding with Twelver Shia Mahdist expectation).
  • The single highest-leverage requirement in the whole curriculum: every occurrence of “justified”/Saleh sayılma in James 2:21-24 must carry a mandatory cross-reference note distinguishing James’s evidentiary sense from Romans’ forensic sense, anchored to James 2:23’s exact quotation of Genesis 15:6 (identical to Romans 4:3).

Risks:

  • Doctrinal reversal risk (Critical): Unexplained, James 2:14-26 reads as biblical confirmation of a works-grounds-salvation theology that the Romans package was explicitly built to exclude.
  • Eschatological collision risk (Critical): A single mistranslation of parousia as zühur would graft Christ’s return onto Twelfth Imam/Mahdi expectation — one of the most emotionally central hopes in Azerbaijani Shia devotion.
  • Tanzih collision risk (Critical): James 3:9’s “made in God’s likeness” directly confronts a popularly-taught exclusion of any Allah-creation resemblance; this is genuinely new theological ground for Azerbaijani Christian teaching material.
  • Ritual-conflation risk (High): James 5:14’s anointing (məsh) is phonetically and conceptually adjacent to the Islamic ablution ritual məsh çəkmək; James 5:15’s healing (Sağaltmaq) must never collapse into Xilas (salvation).
  • Cult/sect echo risk: Six documented paraphrase/sect rendering patterns (Jehovah’s Witnesses “Yehova” substitution, Sufi-adjacent “övliya” framing, ablution-ritual conflation, prosperity-gospel healing-guarantee framing, universalist softening of James 2:19, euphemistic softening of James 2:25) must not be echoed — see 05_translation_landscape.md Section 4.

Opportunities:

  • Strong genuine bridges exist and should be actively used in teaching, not just neutralized as risks: təkəbbür as Iblis’s defining sin (James 4:6-10), orphan/widow care ethics (James 1:27), fair-wage ethics (James 5:4), Abraham/Job/Elijah as recognized Qur’anic figures (James 2:21-23; 5:11, 17-18), and qeybət (backbiting) ethics (James 3:1-12) all offer low-friction entry points into harder doctrinal territory.
  • No competing Azerbaijani-language study-Bible tradition exists for James; this curriculum sets first precedent for how several of these doctrines (law of liberty, wisdom triad, Abraham/Rahab pairing) are taught in Azerbaijani, an opportunity to establish sound doctrine cleanly rather than correct an existing bad precedent.

Recommended actions:

  1. Route all James 2:14-26 segments (the entire core passage) to human theologian review as a non-negotiable batch, per the escalation rules in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md.
  2. Fix and distribute a single approved cross-reference note for Saleh sayılma (James 2 sense) at Doctrinal Fidelity Review (Step 17) before any parallel batch processing of James 2 begins, to prevent inconsistent teaching-note language across lessons.
  3. Confirm the Azerbaijani Müqəddəs Kitab numeric YouVersion versionId before Phase 2 publishing (currently a placeholder per 05_translation_landscape.md Section 5.1).
  4. Brief all human theologian reviewers specifically on the zühur, tanzih, and mizan collision points before review begins, since these require cultural-theological literacy beyond standard translation QA.
  5. Carry forward assets/translation_memory.json (James, v1) and assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json (James, v1) unchanged into Phase 2 tooling; both are finalized and internally consistent with this summary’s counts.
