Core Glossary
Core Glossary — Colossians — English → Azerbaijani
Purpose
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing theological term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md across the full book of Colossians (chapters 1-4), assigns an Azerbaijani rendering and risk tier to each, and states its relationship to the baseline Romans translation_memory.json. Terms marked Reused carry over the baseline rendering unchanged and without exception. Terms marked New are proposed here for the first time and must be added to a Colossians-specific translation memory extension before Phase 2 translation begins.
Risk tiers and review routing follow the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json conventions exactly: Critical/High → human theologian review; Medium → native speaker review; Low → automated review.

| Term | Azerbaijani Rendering | Transliteration | Greek Original | Risk | Doctrine Category | Primary Passages | Alternatives Rejected | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| image (of God) | Surət | soo-RAHT | εἰκών | Critical | Supremacy of Christ / Deity of Christ | 1:15; 3:10 | ”bənzərlik” (mere resemblance) | Christ as exact, personal self-disclosure of the invisible God, not a crafted representation; direct tension with Islamic aniconism must be taught explicitly, not avoided. |
| firstborn | İlk doğulan | eelk doh-oo-LAHN | πρωτότοκος | Critical | Supremacy of Christ over Creation | 1:15; 1:18 | ”birinci yaradılan” (first created one) | Rank/inheritance sense, NOT first-created-being sense; guard against Arian-adjacent, Islamic-compatible misreading. |
| creation (as agent) | Yaratmaq / Yaradılış | yah-raht-MAHKH / yah-rah-duh-LUHSH | κτίζω / κτίσις | Critical (verb, agentive sense) / Medium (noun) | Supremacy of Christ over Creation | 1:15,16,23 | — | Christ as Creator-agent (verb form) is Critical; the created order itself (noun) is Medium. |
| thrones/dominions/rulers/authorities | Taxtlar, hakimiyyətlər, başçılıqlar, hökmranlıqlar | tahkht-LAHR, hah-kee-mee-yaht-LAIR, bahsh-chuh-luhk-LAHR, hukm-rahn-luhk-LAHR | θρόνοι, κυριότητες, ἀρχαί, ἐξουσίαι | High | Supremacy of Christ over Creation | 1:16; 2:10,15 | ”mələklər” alone (loses the rank distinctions) | Created, subordinate spiritual powers; must not be presented as rivaling Christ, given Azerbaijani folk-religious hierarchy of intermediary spiritual beings. |
| before all things (preexistence) | Hər şeydən əvvəl | HAIR shay-DAHN ah-VAHL | πρὸ πάντων | Critical | Deity of Christ | 1:17 | — | Absolute eternal preexistence, not merely chronological priority within creation. |
| head | Baş | BAHSH | κεφαλή | High | Christ as Head of the Church | 1:18; 2:10,19 | ”rəhbər” (leader, too weak) | Organic, life-giving authority over the body, not a merely honorary or clerical headship. |
| fullness | Tamlıq | tahm-LOOK | πλήρωμα | Critical | Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily | 1:19; 2:9 | ”emanasiya” (emanation, Gnostic-adjacent) | Entire, undivided fullness of God resident in Christ; must never suggest partial or distributed deity. |
| deity/Godhood | İlahilik | ee-lah-hee-LEEK | θεότης | Critical | Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily | 2:9 | — | Distinct from “Allah” (God himself); names the abstract quality/nature of being God, fully present in Christ. |
| bodily | Bədəncə | bah-dan-JAH | σωματικῶς | Critical | Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily / Incarnation | 2:9 | — | Reinforces baseline’s incarnation (Bədən alma); deity resident in a real physical body, not spiritually only. |
| reconciliation | Barışdırma | bah-ruhsh-duhr-MAH | ἀποκαταλλάσσω / ἀποκαταλλάξαι | Critical | Reconciliation through the Cross | 1:20,21,22 | ”sülh” alone (result, not mechanism) | Names the decisive, unilateral act restoring a broken relationship, achieved specifically through the cross; kept distinct from but connected to Sülh (peace, baseline). |

| cross | Çarmıx | chahr-MUHKH | σταυρός | Critical | Reconciliation through the Cross | 1:20; 2:14 | — | Names the historical crucifixion directly disputed by mainstream Qur’anic reading; mandatory theologian review at every occurrence. |
| redemption | Satınalma | sah-tuhn-ahl-MAH | ἀπολύτρωσις | Critical | Reconciliation through the Cross | 1:14 | ”fidiyə” (echoes Islamic fidya, a duty-substitution payment) | Costly, blood-purchased release; must not resemble the works-adjacent Islamic ransom concept. |
| forgiveness of sins | Günahların bağışlanması | goo-nahkh-lah-RUHN bah-uhsh-lahn-mah-SUH | ἄφεσις τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν | High | Reconciliation through the Cross | 1:14 | — | Distinct from baseline’s justification caution; here it is Colossians’ own direct term, tied to redemption/blood rather than free-floating divine leniency. |
| kingdom of the [beloved] Son | Onun sevimli Oğlunun Padşahlığı | oh-NOON seh-veem-LEE oh-loo-NOON pahd-shah-luh-UH | ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ υἱοῦ τῆς ἀγάπης αὐτοῦ | Critical | Sonship of Christ / Kingdom | 1:13 | — | Combines baseline Kingdom and Sonship Critical doctrines; carries full tawhid-collision weight. |
| mystery | Sirr | SEER | μυστήριον | High | Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism | 1:26,27; 2:2; 4:3 | — | Once-hidden, NOW fully revealed to ALL believers — the opposite of Sufi/Shia esoteric elite-only “sirr”; must be explicitly taught as inverted from that cultural association. |
| wisdom | Hikmət | heek-MAHT | σοφία | High | Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism | 1:9,28; 2:3,23; 3:16; 4:5 | — | ALL wisdom located in Christ without remainder, not one wise teacher’s share among many (hikmət tradition). |
| elemental spirits / elements of the world | Dünyanın ibtidai qüvvələri | dewn-yah-NUHN eeb-tee-DAH-ee kewv-vah-lah-REE | στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου | High | Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism | 2:8,20 | ”təbiət qüvvələri” (nature forces, too narrow) | Central syncretism-warning term; encompasses folk-religious practices (amulets, astrology, divination) rendered obsolete by Christ. |
| worship of angels | Mələklərə ibadət | mah-lahk-lah-RAH ee-bah-DAHT | θρησκεία τῶν ἀγγέλων | Critical | Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism | 2:18 | — | Direct collision with baseline saints/intercession cautions (övliyalar, şəfaət, təvəssül); created beings must never receive worship due Christ alone. |

| circumcision (spiritual) | Sünnət (Məsihin sünnəti) | sewn-NAHT | περιτομή | High | Union with Christ | 2:11 | — | Must be flagged as metaphorical every occurrence; not the literal Islamic male rite sharing the same word. |
| baptism | Vəftiz | vahf-TEEZ | βάπτισμα / βαπτίζω | High | Union with Christ | 2:12 | ”dəstəmaz”/“qüsl” (ritual washing) | Union with Christ’s death/resurrection, not ritual-impurity removal. |

| old self | Köhnə insan | kuh-NAH een-SAHN | ὁ παλαιὸς ἄνθρωπος | Critical | Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New | 3:9 | — | Collides with Islamic fitrə anthropology (born sinless); requires explicit doctrinal teaching alongside translation. |
| new self | Yeni insan | yeh-NEE een-SAHN | ὁ νέος/καινός ἄνθρωπος | Critical | Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New | 3:10 | — | Paired directly with “old self”; renewed after Christ’s image (ties to Surət, 1:15). |
| submit (household) | Tabe olmaq | tah-BEH ohl-MAHKH | ὑποτάσσομαι | High | Household Codes | 3:18 | — | Must be taught as gospel-qualified (“as is fitting in the Lord”), not a blanket endorsement of prevailing cultural/shariah patriarchal norms; flag for theologian AND native-speaker review. |
| master (human, household) | Ağa | ah-AH | κύριος (κατὰ σάρκα) | High | Household Codes | 3:22; 4:1 | ”Rəbb” (FORBIDDEN — reserved exclusively for divine Lord) | Critical translation-safety distinction: the same Greek word κύριος must be split into Ağa (human master) vs. Rəbb (divine Master in heaven, 4:1b) to prevent doctrinal bleed-through. |
| bondservant/slave (household) | Qul | kool | δοῦλος | High | Household Codes | 3:22-24 | — | Literal ancient household-slavery sense; distinguish from any metaphorical “servant of Christ” usage elsewhere in the curriculum. |

Total new Colossians terms requiring formal glossary entry: 79 (in addition to 17 terms reused unchanged from the Romans baseline translation memory).
Escalation note for Phase 2: The following term clusters require the SAME segment-level flagging discipline the baseline established for Romans’ forbidden-substitution list, and must be added to a Colossians-specific “forbidden substitutions” addendum before Phase 2 begins:
- κύριος split: Rəbb (divine) vs. Ağa (human master, household code) — never interchange.
- πλήρωμα / θεότης / σωματικῶς cluster: Tamlıq / İlahilik / Bədəncə — never rendered with partial-indwelling or emanation language.
- πρωτότοκος: İlk doğulan — never “birinci yaradılan” (first-created).
- μυστήριον: Sirr — must always be taught as now-fully-revealed-to-all, inverting the Sufi/Shia esoteric-elite association.
- στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου / θρησκεία τῶν ἀγγέλων / ἐθελοθρησκία cluster: the three central syncretism-warning terms, to be taught together as Colossians’ unified critique of folk-religious and ascetic-devotional syncretism.
This glossary extends, and must be loaded alongside, the baseline translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json for all Phase 2 Colossians translation work.
Critical Risk Terms
God
Approved rendering: Allah
Transliteration: ahl-LAHKH
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Tanrı (understood, but a Turkish convention rather than the settled Azerbaijani IBT usage)
Original: θεός
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Colossians 1:19 and 2:9 identify Christ as the one in whom the entire fullness of this same Allah dwells bodily; do not switch to Tanrı or any impersonal-ultimate-reality term.
Jesus
Approved rendering: İsa
Transliteration: ee-SAH
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: bare ‘İsa Peyğəmbər’ (Prophet Jesus, without Məsih)
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Always paired with Məsih (İsa Məsih) throughout Colossians; never used bare, which signals only the Qur’anic prophet-Jesus referent.
Messiah
Approved rendering: Məsih
Transliteration: mah-SEEKH
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Rejected alternatives: sadəcə bir peyğəmbər (merely a prophet)
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Colossians 1:15-20 supplies the fullest cosmic-Creator, atoning-Savior content for this title anywhere in the New Testament; this content must accompany every use, not be left a bare honorific shared with the Qur’anic al-Masih.
Lord
Approved rendering: Rəbb
Transliteration: RAHBB
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ağa (master, non-divine)
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. In Colossians this exact CRITICAL split matters more than anywhere in Romans: κύριος names the divine Lord at 1:3,10; 3:17,24; 4:1b (‘Master in heaven’), but a human household master at 3:22; 4:1a — the human sense must use Ağa (see master_human below), never Rəbb.
Father
Approved rendering: Ata
Transliteration: ah-TAH
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: Yaradan (Creator, as a substitute to avoid relational language)
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Same tawhid-sensitivity caution applies at Colossians 1:2,3,12; 3:17.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: Müqəddəs Ruh
Transliteration: myoo-kad-DASS ROOKH
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: Cəbrail (the archangel Gabriel)
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Colossians 1:8 names the Spirit as the source of the Colossians’ love; must not be equated with Cəbrail.
Resurrection
Approved rendering: Diriliş
Transliteration: dee-ree-LEESH
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Rejected alternatives: göyə qaldırılma (being raised to heaven, without dying)
Original: ἀνάστασις (concept)
Category: Eschatology
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Presupposes a real prior death; Colossians extends this term into believer-inclusive compounds (see buried_raised_with below), 1:18, 2:12, 3:1.
Son Of God
Approved rendering: Allahın Oğlu
Transliteration: ahl-lah-HUHN oh-loo
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Allahın sevimli qulu (God’s beloved servant)
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Underlies Colossians 1:13’s ‘kingdom of the [beloved] Son’ compound (see kingdom_of_the_son below) and 8:29-style Sonship background; never softened to a servant euphemism.
Incarnation
Approved rendering: Bədən alma
Transliteration: bah-DAN ahl-MAH
Doctrine: Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: Allahın insan qiyafəsinə girməsi (God disguising himself in human form)
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Reinforced with maximum explicitness by Colossians 2:9’s ‘bodily’ (Bədəncə, see below); avoid any phrasing implying disguise or mere appearance.
Intercession
Approved rendering: Vasitəçilik
Transliteration: vah-see-tah-chee-LEEK
Doctrine: Prayer and Intercession
Rejected alternatives: şəfaət (Shia doctrine of Imam intercession), təvəssül (seeking mediated access to God through a saint or Imam)
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Colossians 4:2-4’s ordinary believer-to-believer prayer request must be taught as categorically distinct from this Critical caution about Christ’s own unique, sufficient intercession; never şəfaət or təvəssül for either sense.
High Risk Terms
Law
Approved rendering: Qanun
Transliteration: kah-NOON
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Rejected alternatives: şəriət (Islamic religious law)
Original: νόμος
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Background to Colossians 2:14,16-17’s discussion of shadow/fulfillment; never şəriət.
Sin
Approved rendering: Günah
Transliteration: goo-NAHKH
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Rejected alternatives: xəta (mistake/error)
Original: ἁμαρτία
Category: Sin
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Colossians 2:13 (‘dead in your transgressions’) is even more emphatic than Romans’ ‘all have sinned’ and resists Islamic fitrə anthropology (humans born sinless) more sharply; ties directly to old_self below.
Glory
Approved rendering: Ehtişam
Transliteration: eh-htee-SHAHM
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: nur (divine light, heavily associated in Shia devotional tradition with the pre-existent ‘Light of the Imams’/Nur-i Məhəmmədi)
Original: δόξα
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Used at Colossians 1:11,27; 3:4; never nur, especially given this letter’s own Nur-adjacent risk at the fullness/deity cluster (2:9).
Called
Approved rendering: Çağırılmış
Transliteration: chah-guh-ruhl-MUSH
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Rejected alternatives: dəvət olunmuş (invited)
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Relevant to Colossians 3:12 (‘God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved’); guards against qismət-style impersonal fate.
Calling
Approved rendering: Çağırış
Transliteration: chah-guh-RUHSH
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Rejected alternatives: dəvət
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Background vocabulary supporting the effectual-calling sense present in Colossians 3:12,15 (‘called to peace’).
Election
Approved rendering: Seçilmə
Transliteration: say-cheel-MAY
Doctrine: Effectual Calling
Rejected alternatives: qismət (fate/fortune), yazı (what is ‘written’, fatalistic decree)
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Underlies Colossians 3:12’s ‘God’s chosen ones’; must never carry qismət-style fatalistic-decree connotations.
Holy
Approved rendering: Müqəddəs
Transliteration: myoo-kad-DASS
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: təmiz (ritually clean)
Original: ἅγιος
Category: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Used at Colossians 1:22; 3:12; moral-relational set-apartness, not ritual cleanliness.
Saints
Approved rendering: Müqəddəslər
Transliteration: myoo-kad-dass-LAIR
Doctrine: Sainthood
Rejected alternatives: övliyalar (venerated holy figures, often linked to shrines and ziyarat pilgrimage in Azerbaijani folk religion)
Original: ἅγιοι
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Corporate address throughout Colossians (1:2,4,12,26; 3:12); not an övliyalar-style elite class.
Sanctification
Approved rendering: Təqdisetmə
Transliteration: tag-dees-et-MAY
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: paklanma (ritual purification)
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Background to Colossians’ entire old-self/new-self teaching (3:5-17); distinguished from ritual purification and ascetic self-denial (2:20-23).
Adoption
Approved rendering: Övladlığa götürülmə
Transliteration: ohv-lahd-luh-AH gur-tuh-ryool-MAY
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: övladlıq (bare, without doctrinal qualifier)
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Background to Colossians 1:12-13 and 3:24’s inheritance language (see inheritance below); must not imply God has literal offspring.
Grace
Approved rendering: Lütf
Transliteration: LYUTF
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: mərhəmət (mercy), kərəm (Persian-influenced ‘divine generosity’, often devotional/mystical)
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Used at Colossians 1:2,6; 3:16; 4:6,18; never mərhəmət/kərəm, both of which operate within a deeds-still-matter framework.
Faith
Approved rendering: İman
Transliteration: ee-MAHN
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: etiqad (doctrinal conviction/creed)
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Every Colossians occurrence (1:4,23; 2:5,7,12) names Christ Jesus explicitly as the object; guard against drift toward the broader Shia creedal-assent sense that includes the Imamate.
Gospel
Approved rendering: Müjdə
Transliteration: myuzh-DAH
Doctrine: Gospel
Rejected alternatives: İncil (bare, unqualified), yaxşı xəbər (generic good news)
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Used at Colossians 1:5,23; must be distinguished from İncil treated purely as a disputed book.
Medium Risk Terms
Peace
Approved rendering: Sülh
Transliteration: SYULKH
Doctrine: Peace with God
Rejected alternatives: rahatlıq (inner calm/comfort)
Original: εἰρήνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. In Colossians 1:20 kept structurally distinct from Barışdırma (reconciliation, see below), which names the achieving mechanism, not merely the resulting state.
Church
Approved rendering: Kilsə
Transliteration: keel-SAY
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Rejected alternatives: məscid-vari icma (mosque-like religious community, an unhelpful borrowed frame)
Original: ἐκκλησία
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Colossians additionally requires the universal, cosmic-scope sense (one body under the one Head over all creation, 1:18,24; 4:15-16), reinforced more strongly here than in Romans.
Kingdom Of God
Approved rendering: Allahın Padşahlığı
Transliteration: ahl-lah-HUHN pahd-shah-luh-UH
Doctrine: Kingdom Mission
Rejected alternatives: Allahın dövləti (God’s state/nation)
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Background to Colossians 1:13’s ‘kingdom of the [beloved] Son’ compound (see kingdom_of_the_son below); never dövlət, a sensitive category given Azerbaijan’s secular constitutional tradition.
Gentiles
Approved rendering: Millətlər
Transliteration: mil-lat-LAIR
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles
Rejected alternatives: kafirlər (unbelievers/infidels, an Islamic religious-legal category), bütpərəstlər (idolaters, archaic)
Original: ἔθνη
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Underlies Colossians 1:27 and the expanded unity list of 3:11 (see unity_list below).
David
Approved rendering: Davud

Apostle
Approved rendering: Həvari
Transliteration: heh-vah-REE
Doctrine: Apostleship
Rejected alternatives: peyğəmbər (prophet-messenger), imam (in the Shia sense of an infallible spiritual-political successor)
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Colossians 1:1 opens with Paul’s apostolic self-identification; guard against Imamate-shaped associations as in the baseline.
Low Risk Terms
Thanksgiving
Approved rendering: Şükran
Transliteration: shook-RAHN
Doctrine: Thanksgiving
Original: εὐχαριστία
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Colossians uses this term with unusual frequency (1:12; 2:7; 3:15,17; 4:2), reinforcing rather than complicating the baseline’s low-risk assessment.
