Core Glossary
Core Glossary: Philippians
Governing authority: Romans Language Package. Section A below lists every Romans-established term that recurs in Philippians and MUST be reused exactly, unchanged. Section B introduces every new Philippians-specific term, with the same fields as translation_memory.json/bible_term_registry.json, ready for merge into an updated translation memory in Phase 2.

| covenant | Əhd | Medium | (implicit background to 3:3-6 circumcision material) |
| election | Seçilmə | High | (implicit, 1:6 “he who began a good work”) |
| intercession | Vasitəçilik | Critical | (implicit, 1:19 “prayer,” 4:6 δέησις — related but distinct, see Section B) |
| providence | Allahın tədbiri | High | 1:6, 1:12, 4:19 (thematic) |
| mission | Müjdə yayma xidməti | Medium | 1:5, 1:12-18, 2:22, 4:3 |

| jesus | İsa | Critical | throughout, always paired with Məsih |
| god | Allah | Critical | throughout |
| holy spirit | Müqəddəs Ruh | Critical | 1:19, 2:1, 3:3 |

| exhort | Nəsihət vermək | Low | 4:2 (implicit appeal to Euodia/Syntyche) |
| imputed righteousness | Hesaba alınan salehlik | Critical | 3:9 |
Note on fellowship/Ünsiyyət: while Low risk in the Romans registry, Philippians’ repeated use of κοινωνία for material/financial partnership (1:5, 4:14-15) alongside spiritual fellowship (2:1, 3:10) means this term functions at effectively High risk within this curriculum specifically. Native speaker review is recommended for every Philippians occurrence to confirm the correct sense (spiritual fellowship vs. gospel-partnership vs. financial partnership) is clear in context, even though the Azerbaijani word itself does not change.
Section B — New Terms Introduced by Philippians
kenosis_self_emptying
- Translation: Özünü heçə çıxarma (noun form); özünü heçə çıxardı (verb, Phil 2:7)
- Transliteration: oh-zoo-NEW hech-AH chuh-har-MAH
- Doctrine risk: Critical
- Doctrine: The Incarnation and Self-Emptying of Christ (Kenosis)
- Alternatives rejected: “Allahlığından əl çəkdi” (gave up his deity/Godhood — implies Christ ceased being God, a heresy exceeding the underlying tawhid tension); “özünü aşağı saldı” (too weak, collapses into generic humility with no reference to pre-existent deity)
- Notes: CRITICAL: Christ empties himself of the display/exercise of divine glory and prerogative in taking servant form (2:7), not of his divine nature or essence, which he retains throughout (per Bədən alma, Critical, Romans TM). Must always be taught alongside μορφή θεοῦ/Allah təbiətində (below) so the self-emptying is not misread as self-negation of deity.
form_of_god
- Translation: Allah təbiətində (olmaq)
- Transliteration: ahl-LAHKH tah-bee-a-TEEN-da
- Doctrine risk: Critical
- Doctrine: Deity of Christ / Incarnation
- Alternatives rejected: “Allahın surəti” (God’s image/form) — Islam’s prohibition on depicting Allah (taswir/anti-iconic tradition) risks a visual-representation misreading rather than the intended ontological-nature claim
- Notes: μορφή θεοῦ (Phil 2:6) asserts Christ’s pre-existent, essential deity — the premise on which kenosis depends. Pair explicitly with son_of_god and deity_of_christ (both Critical, Romans doctrine registry).
equality_with_god
- Translation: Allahla bərabərlik
- Transliteration: ahl-lahkh-LAH bah-rah-behr-LEEK
- Doctrine risk: Critical
- Doctrine: Deity of Christ
- Alternatives rejected: “Allah tərəfindən çox hörmətlənən” (greatly honored by God — softens co-equal deity into mere favor)
- Notes: CRITICAL. Direct collision with Qur’an 112:4 (“there is none equal to Him”). Christ’s equality with God was possessed, not sought or acquired (v.6’s ἁρπαγμός); do not present as an achievement or grant.
form_of_a_servant
- Translation: Qulun forması
- Transliteration: koo-LOON for-mah-SUH
- Doctrine risk: High
- Doctrine: Incarnation / Kenosis
- Alternatives rejected: none proposed; bare “qul” without “forma” qualifier rejected as it collapses the distinction between the universal creature-status sense of qul (Islamic anthropology: every human is Allah’s qul by nature) and Christ’s voluntary, downward assumption of servant status he did not by nature have
- Notes: Must be taught with explicit contrast: ordinary “qul” describes creatures’ native subordinate status before God; Christ’s servant-form is a chosen, temporary self-lowering by one who was, and remains, equal with God.
cross
- Translation: Çarmıx
- Transliteration: chahr-MUHKH
- Doctrine risk: Critical
- Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ / Incarnation (extends existing Romans Critical doctrine to cover the crucifixion event itself)
- Alternatives rejected: “əzab” / “iztirab” (generic suffering) — dilutes the specific historical execution event
- Notes: CRITICAL. Qur’an 4:157 denies both death and crucifixion specifically (“they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him”). Çarmıx must be taught as a real historical execution — foundational to resurrection_of_christ (Critical, Romans doctrine registry) since a real crucifixion is the necessary premise for a real resurrection.
bowing_the_knee
- Translation: Diz çökmək
- Transliteration: deez chuk-MAKH
- Doctrine risk: Critical
- Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
- Alternatives rejected: “hörmət göstərmək” (show honor/respect) — too weak; loses the specific worship-posture claim
- Notes: CRITICAL. The knee-bowing/prostration posture is reserved exclusively for Allah in Islamic worship practice (sujud within namaz). Directing this posture to Jesus (Phil 2:10) is a direct practice-level collision, not merely a doctrinal one, and should be flagged for explicit pastoral framing alongside the Romans 10:9 confession material.
name_above_every_name
- Translation: Bütün adlardan üstün olan ad
- Transliteration: bew-TEWN ahd-lahr-DAHN ews-TEWN oh-LAHN ahd
- Doctrine risk: High
- Doctrine: Lordship of Christ / Deity of Christ
- Alternatives rejected: “çox məşhur ad” (very famous name) — trivializes the supreme-rank claim
- Notes: Islamic devotional tradition reserves supreme honorific “Names” status for Allah (al-asma al-husna). Teach that this supreme name is conferred by the Father, to the Father’s glory (2:11) — a Trinitarian point, not a rival-deity claim.
exaltation_of_christ
- Translation: Çox-çox ucaltma (verb: çox-çox ucaltdı)
- Transliteration: chokh-chokh oo-jahlt-MAH
- Doctrine risk: High
- Doctrine: Deity of Christ / Resurrection of Christ
- Alternatives rejected: “ucaltdı” alone (flat “exalted”) — loses the intensive ὑπερ- (“hyper-”) force of the compound verb
- Notes: The Father’s exaltation of the obedient Son vindicates and reveals, rather than newly grants, Christ’s eternal status.
humility_christ_modeled
- Translation: Təvazökarlıq (Məsih nümunəsi üzrə)
- Transliteration: tah-vah-zoh-kahr-LUHK
- Doctrine risk: Medium
- Doctrine: Unity and Humility in the Church
- Alternatives rejected: none; təvazökarlıq itself is retained as a genuine point of shared virtue-vocabulary with Islamic ethics
- Notes: Genuine resonance point (unlike most High/Critical terms in this glossary) — but the specific shape of Christian humility (a superior voluntarily lowering himself, Phil 2:6-8) exceeds the general devotional-modesty sense and should be taught explicitly using the Christ-hymn as the controlling pattern.
same_mindedness
- Translation: Eyni düşüncədə/əhval-ruhiyyədə olmaq
- Transliteration: ay-NEE dew-shewn-jah-DAH ol-MAKH
- Doctrine risk: Medium
- Doctrine: Unity and Humility in the Church
- Alternatives rejected: “eyni fikirdə olmaq” (hold the same opinion) — too intellectualist, loses the dispositional/attitudinal sense of φρονέω
- Notes: Must be rendered consistently across 2:2, 2:5, 3:15, 4:2 (Theological Consistency Rule extended from Romans to Philippians).
joy_in_suffering
- Translation: Sevinc (əzab içində)
- Transliteration: seh-VEENJ
- Doctrine risk: Medium-High
- Doctrine: Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment
- Alternatives rejected: none; sevinc itself is standard, but requires substantial teaching support
- Notes: Azerbaijani devotional culture (Shia mourning traditions surrounding Karbala/Ashura) more readily frames suffering through grief/lament than joy; Paul’s joy-amid-chains claim (1:4, 18; 4:4) must be taught as a distinct, resurrection-grounded reality rather than assimilated to either stoic endurance or ritual mourning.
participatory_suffering
- Translation: Onun əzablarına şərik olmaq (kοινωνία παθημάτων)
- Transliteration: oh-NOON az-ahb-lah-ruh-NAH shah-REEK ol-MAKH
- Doctrine risk: High
- Doctrine: Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment
- Alternatives rejected: “şəfaətə şərik olmaq” (share in intercession) — must never be used; would directly import the Shia Imamate intercessory-merit framework already flagged as Critical/forbidden in the Romans registry (şəfaət)
- Notes: HIGH. Sharing in Christ’s sufferings (3:10) is fellowship/identification with Christ’s pattern, not accumulation of intercessory merit through suffering (a live risk given the devotional weight of participatory, redemptive-suffering themes in Shia Islam, especially around Karbala). Distinguish clearly from vasitəçilik/intercession (Critical, Romans TM) — Christ’s suffering was uniquely atoning; believers’ suffering is not.
gospel_partnership
- Translation: Müjdə işində ünsiyyət/tərəfdaşlıq
- Transliteration: myuzh-DAH ee-sheen-DAH ewn-see-YAHT
- Doctrine risk: High
- Doctrine: Partnership in the Gospel
- Alternatives rejected: a separate standalone word distinct from Ünsiyyət — rejected in order to preserve consistency with the Romans-established fellowship term; instead a qualifying phrase is added
- Notes: Base term Ünsiyyət is reused from Romans TM exactly, but Philippians extends it to cover material/financial co-participation (1:5, 4:14-16) alongside spiritual fellowship (2:1, 3:10). Flag every occurrence for native speaker review to confirm the correct sense is contextually clear.
citizenship_in_heaven
- Translation: Səmavi vətəndaşlıq (Bizim vətəndaşlığımız göylərdədir)
- Transliteration: sah-mah-VEE vah-tan-dahsh-LUHK
- Doctrine risk: High
- Doctrine: Citizenship in Heaven
- Alternatives rejected: “səmavi dövlətin üzvüyük” (we are members of a heavenly state) — imports “dövlət” (state/nation), already flagged in the Romans registry as a loaded political category to avoid for kingdom_of_god
- Notes: Vətəndaşlıq carries strong modern civic-political connotation (Azerbaijan Respublikasının vətəndaşı). “Heavenly citizenship” (Phil 3:20) risks being heard as a rival political-allegiance claim in a state that regulates religious organizational activity. Teach explicitly as an eschatological/spiritual identity that relativizes, but does not replace, ordinary civic duty — consistent with Romans 13:1-7 government-authority teaching. Route for native speaker review; escalate to human theologian review if paired with any evangelism/proclamation content per the Romans escalation rules.
circumcision_controversy
- Translation: Sünnət (mübahisəsi)
- Transliteration: sewn-NAT
- Doctrine risk: High
- Doctrine: Righteousness by Faith versus the Law
- Alternatives rejected: none; sünnət is the only viable Azerbaijani term
- Notes: Sünnət is also a familiar cultural-religious practice among Azerbaijani Muslims (though grounded in tradition/hygiene rather than covenant sign). Readers may project the familiar practice’s meaning onto Paul’s argument; must explicitly teach that Paul’s target is reliance on any religious/ethnic mark as the ground of standing before God, not the physical practice itself.
confidence_in_the_flesh
- Translation: Cismə əsaslanan etibar (σάρξ)
- Transliteration: jees-MAH a-sahs-lah-NAHN eh-tee-BAHR
- Doctrine risk: High
- Doctrine: Righteousness by Faith versus the Law
- Alternatives rejected: bare “bədən” (body) — collapses σάρξ’s specific sense of self-reliant human religious credentials into a generic anatomical term
- Notes: Phil 3:3-4’s σάρξ names Paul’s former reliance on ancestry, religious pedigree, and law-keeping — the polar opposite of righteousness received by faith (Salehlik, Critical, Romans TM). This is a new term not present in the Romans registry despite the concept’s importance there; add to translation memory in Phase 2 as a Philippians-originated High-risk term.
rubbish_for_christ
- Translation: Zibil (Məsih üçün)
- Transliteration: zee-BEEL
- Doctrine risk: Medium
- Doctrine: Righteousness by Faith versus the Law
- Alternatives rejected: “peyin” (literal dung) — too coarse for the target register (modern-standard newspaper-feature level); risk of being heard as vulgar rather than rhetorically forceful
- Notes: Preserve Paul’s intentionally shocking devaluation of works-based religious credentials (3:8) while matching the register requirements of the Language Package; flag for native speaker review on register appropriateness.
maturity_in_christ
- Translation: Yetkin (NOT kamil)
- Transliteration: yet-KEEN
- Doctrine risk: High
- Doctrine: Pressing on toward the Goal in Christ
- Alternatives rejected: “kamil” (perfect/complete) — REJECTED: strong association with Sufi mystical İnsan-i Kamil (“Perfect Man”) tradition, a staged path of self-attained spiritual perfection incompatible with Paul’s grace-grounded, still-pursuing maturity (3:12-15, note Paul explicitly denies having “arrived”)
- Notes: HIGH. This is one of the most important forbidden-substitution additions for the Philippians package; add to the Critical Forbidden Substitutions list for Phase 2 (see requirements document).
pressing_toward_the_goal
- Translation: Hədəfə tərəf can atmaq (διώκω, contextual “pursue” sense)
- Transliteration: hah-daf-AH tah-RAHF jahn aht-MAHKH
- Doctrine risk: Medium
- Doctrine: Pressing on toward the Goal in Christ
- Alternatives rejected: “təqib etmək” reserved exclusively for the “persecute” sense of the same Greek verb (3:6) — must not be used for the “pursue the goal” sense (3:12, 14) to avoid conflating Paul’s former persecution of the church with his present pursuit of Christ
- Notes: Context-sensitive dual meaning of διώκω requires a translator note at each occurrence specifying which sense is active, per the Romans package’s model for context-sensitive terms (called/calling).
prize_of_the_call
- Translation: Mükafat (βραβεῖον)
- Transliteration: mew-kah-FAHT
- Doctrine risk: Medium
- Doctrine: Pressing on toward the Goal in Christ
- Alternatives rejected: none; term retained but requires teaching qualification
- Notes: Must be explicitly taught as the fullness of knowing Christ and resurrection glory (3:10-11, 14), not a wage earned through religious performance — guards against assimilation into an Islamic works-reward soteriological framework (Paradise as reward for deeds).
contentment_in_christ
- Translation: Kifayətlənmə / Qənaət (Məsihdə)
- Transliteration: kee-fah-yat-lan-MAH
- Doctrine risk: High
- Doctrine: Contentment in All Circumstances
- Alternatives rejected: bare “qənaət” without qualification — risks assimilation to the tavakkul/qismət framework (trust in Allah’s provision/fate), already flagged as a fatalistic-decree risk for providence/election in the Romans registry
- Notes: αὐτάρκεια’s Stoic self-sufficiency background is deliberately redefined by Paul as Christ-empowered contentment (4:13), not self-generated equanimity nor fatalistic resignation. Always pair with the “strengthened by Christ” term below.
strengthened_by_christ
- Translation: Məsih vasitəsilə qüvvətlənmə (ἐνδυναμόω)
- Transliteration: mah-SEEKH vah-see-tah-SEE-lah kewv-vat-lan-MAH
- Doctrine risk: High
- Doctrine: Contentment in All Circumstances / Power of God for Salvation
- Alternatives rejected: generic self-help rendering (“hər şeyə qadirəm,” bare “I can do anything”) divorced from the Christ-specific empowerment and surrounding want-or-plenty context
- Notes: Pairs with power_of_god (Allahın qüdrəti, High, Romans TM) but is a distinct verb (ἐνδυναμόω, “to empower/strengthen”) requiring its own entry; must always retain the explicit Christ-referent (“through him who strengthens me”), never floated as free-standing self-sufficiency teaching.
gain_and_loss
- Translation: Qazanc və zərər (κέρδος / ζημία)
- Transliteration: kah-ZAHNJ vah zah-RAHR
- Doctrine risk: Medium
- Doctrine: Righteousness by Faith versus the Law
- Alternatives rejected: none
- Notes: Supports the righteousness-by-faith argument; Paul’s former religious credentials reclassified as loss, not despite but because of their formerly perceived value — reinforcing that righteousness is not a ledger of credits and debits (cf. imputed_righteousness, Critical, Romans TM).
church_offices
- Translation: Nəzarətçi (overseer) / Xidmətçi (deacon)
- Transliteration: nah-zah-rat-CHEE / khee-dmat-CHEE
- Doctrine risk: Medium
- Doctrine: Church as God’s People
- Alternatives rejected: “yepiskop” (Orthodox/Catholic loanword title) for ἐπίσκοπος — risks importing an unfamiliar hierarchical clerical-office model; “axund/mullah” framing avoided entirely as a category collision with Islamic clergy roles
- Notes: Functional, plural, non-hierarchical rendering preferred to match the collegial local-church leadership pattern of Phil 1:1.

Recommendation for Phase 2: Merge Section B entries into translation_memory.json as version 2, and merge corresponding entries into bible_term_registry.json and doctrine_risk_registry.json, preserving every Section A term unchanged per the “no substitution” rule inherited from the Romans baseline.
Critical Risk Terms
Righteousness
Approved rendering: Salehlik
Transliteration: sah-lehk-LEEK
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: saleh əməllər (righteous deeds, as the ground itself)
Original: δικαιοσύνη
Category: Salvation
CRITICAL: Never present as equivalent to saleh əməllər. Central to Philippians 3:6-9’s explicit law-versus-faith contrast; also occurs in the ordinary ethical-list sense at 4:8 (δίκαιος) — flag translators to distinguish this ethical-quality usage from the soteriological term without creating a second Azerbaijani word. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Philippians.
Salvation
Approved rendering: Xilas
Transliteration: khee-LAHS
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: nicat (Imamate-intercession-flavored), cənnətə girmək (entering paradise)
Original: σωτηρία
Category: Salvation
CRITICAL: settled present reality through Christ’s finished work. Occurs at Philippians 1:19, 1:28, 2:12; 2:12’s ‘work out your own salvation’ must be read together with 2:13 (see work_out_salvation below). Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Philippians.
Resurrection
Approved rendering: Diriliş
Transliteration: dee-ree-LEESH
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Rejected alternatives: göyə qaldırılma (raised to heaven without dying)
Original: ἀνάστασις
Category: Eschatology
CRITICAL: real bodily death followed by bodily resurrection. Occurs at Philippians 3:10 (‘power of his resurrection’), 3:11, and is presupposed by 3:21’s bodily transformation. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Philippians.
Lord
Approved rendering: Rəbb
Transliteration: RAHBB
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ağa (master, non-divine)
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
Central in Philippians 2:11 (‘Jesus Christ is Lord’), matching Romans 10:9’s confession exactly. Also 1:2, 2:19, 2:24, 3:8, 3:20, 4:1, 4:4, 4:5, 4:10, 4:23. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Philippians.
Son Of God
Approved rendering: Allahın Oğlu
Transliteration: ahl-lah-HUHN oh-loo
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Allahın sevimli qulu (God’s beloved servant)
Original: υἱὸς θεοῦ
Category: Christology
Not directly verbalized in Philippians but is the necessary doctrinal ground of 2:6’s ‘form of God’ and ‘equality with God’ claims; must be taught alongside those terms. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Philippians.
Incarnation
Approved rendering: Bədən alma
Transliteration: bah-DAN ahl-MAH
Doctrine: Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: Allahın insan qiyafəsinə girməsi (disguise)
Original: ὁ λόγος σὰρξ ἐγένετο (cf. Phil 2:7 ἐν ὁμοιώματι ἀνθρώπων γενόμενος)
Category: Christology
Philippians 2:6-8 is this curriculum’s fullest single-passage treatment; must be taught together with kenosis_self_emptying and human_likeness_form below. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Philippians.
Messiah
Approved rendering: Məsih
Transliteration: mah-SEEKH
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Rejected alternatives: sadəcə bir peyğəmbər (merely a prophet)
Original: Χριστός
Category: Christology
Occurs throughout Philippians, always paired with İsa. Philippians 3:8’s ‘surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord’ carries the doctrine’s fullest weight in this curriculum. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Philippians.
Intercession
Approved rendering: Vasitəçilik
Transliteration: vah-see-tah-chee-LEEK
Doctrine: Prayer and Intercession
Rejected alternatives: şəfaət (Shia Imam intercession), təvəssül (mediated access through a saint or Imam)
Original: ἔντευξις / δέησις
Category: Faith
NEVER use şəfaət or təvəssül. Philippians 1:19 (‘through your prayers’) and 4:6 (δέησις, petition) are believer-to-believer and believer-to-God prayer, not mediated Imam-style intercession. See also participatory_suffering below for the related suffering-fellowship risk. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Philippians.
Jesus
Approved rendering: İsa
Transliteration: ee-SAH
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: bare ‘İsa Peyğəmbər’ (Prophet Jesus, without Məsih)
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
Always paired with Məsih throughout Philippians; never used bare in doctrinally significant contexts. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Philippians.
God
Approved rendering: Allah
Transliteration: ahl-LAHKH
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Tanrı (Turkish convention, not settled Azerbaijani IBT usage)
Original: θεός
Category: God
Use Allah consistently throughout Philippians per IBT convention. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Philippians.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: Müqəddəs Ruh
Transliteration: myoo-kad-DASS ROOKH
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: Cəbrail (the archangel Gabriel)
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον / τὸ πνεῦμα Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ
Category: God
Occurs at Philippians 1:19, 2:1, 3:3. NEVER equate with Cəbrail; must be taught explicitly as God himself on first occurrence in each lesson. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Philippians.
Father
Approved rendering: Ata
Transliteration: ah-TAH
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: Yaradan (Creator, avoiding relational language)
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Occurs at Philippians 1:2, 2:11, 4:20. Philippians 2:11 explicitly grounds Christ’s exaltation ‘to the glory of God the Father’ — a Trinitarian point, not a rivalry claim. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Philippians.
Imputed Righteousness
Approved rendering: Hesaba alınan salehlik
Transliteration: heh-sah-BAH ah-luh-NAHN sah-lehk-LEEK
Doctrine: Justification by Faith
Rejected alternatives: qazanılmış salehlik (earned righteousness)
Original: δικαιοσύνη … διὰ πίστεως Χριστοῦ
Category: Salvation
Philippians 3:9 is this curriculum’s clearest statement of the doctrine, directly contrasted with 3:6’s law-based righteousness. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Philippians.
Kenosis Self Emptying
Approved rendering: Özünü heçə çıxartma / özünü heçə çıxardı
Transliteration: oh-zoo-NEW hech-AH chuh-hart-MAH
Doctrine: The Incarnation and Self-Emptying of Christ (Kenosis)
Rejected alternatives: Allahlığından əl çəkdi (gave up his deity/Godhood — implies Christ ceased being God, a heresy exceeding the underlying tawhid tension), özünü aşağı saldı (too weak, collapses into generic humility with no reference to pre-existent deity)
Original: ἐκένωσεν (κενόω)
Category: Christology
NEW Philippians term (2:7). CRITICAL: Christ empties himself of the display/exercise of divine glory and prerogative in taking servant form, not of his divine nature or essence, which he retains throughout (per Bədən alma). Must always be taught paired with form_of_god so the self-emptying is not misread as self-negation of deity.
Form Of God
Approved rendering: Allah təbiətində olmaq
Transliteration: ahl-LAHKH tah-bee-a-TEEN-da ohl-MAKH
Doctrine: Deity of Christ / Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: Allahın surəti (God’s image/form — Islam’s anti-iconic prohibition on depicting Allah risks a visual-representation misreading rather than the intended ontological-nature claim)
Original: μορφῇ θεοῦ
Category: Christology
NEW Philippians term (2:6). μορφή θεοῦ asserts Christ’s pre-existent, essential deity — the premise on which kenosis depends. Pair with son_of_god and deity_of_christ.
Equality With God
Approved rendering: Allahla bərabərlik
Transliteration: ahl-lahkh-LAH bah-rah-behr-LEEK
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Allah tərəfindən çox hörmətlənən (greatly honored by God — softens co-equal deity into mere favor)
Original: ἴσα θεῷ
Category: Christology
NEW Philippians term (2:6). CRITICAL: direct collision with Qur’an 112:4 (‘there is none equal to Him’). Christ’s equality with God was possessed, not sought or acquired; do not present as an achievement or grant.
Human Likeness Form
Approved rendering: İnsan bənzərliyində / insan şəklində
Transliteration: een-SAHN ban-zar-lee-yeen-DAH / een-SAHN shak-leen-DAH
Doctrine: Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: Allahın insan qiyafəsinə girməsi (disguise — already rejected for incarnation/bədən alma)
Original: ὁμοίωμα ἀνθρώπων / σχήματι … ὡς ἄνθρωπος
Category: Christology
NEW Philippians term (2:7). ὁμοίωμα ἀνθρώπων / σχήματι … ὡς ἄνθρωπος affirm Christ’s real, genuine likeness to and outward presentation as a full human being — a true incarnation, not disguise.
Cross
Approved rendering: Çarmıx
Transliteration: chahr-MUHKH
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ / Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: əzab / iztirab (generic suffering/hardship — dilutes the specific historical execution event)
Original: σταυρός / θανάτου σταυροῦ
Category: Christology
NEW Critical-tier term for this curriculum (Philippians 2:8, 3:18), not present in the Romans registry. Qur’an 4:157 denies both death and crucifixion specifically. Çarmıx must be taught as a real historical execution, the necessary premise for a real resurrection.
Bowing The Knee
Approved rendering: Diz çökmək
Transliteration: deez chuk-MAKH
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: hörmət göstərmək (show honor/respect — too weak, loses the specific worship-posture claim)
Original: πᾶν γόνυ κάμψῃ
Category: Christology
NEW Philippians term (2:10). CRITICAL: the knee-bowing/prostration posture (sujud) is reserved exclusively for Allah in Islamic worship practice. Flag for explicit pastoral framing alongside the Romans 10:9 confession material.
Public Confession Of Christ
Approved rendering: İsa Məsih Rəbdir (açıq şəkildə iqrar etmək)
Transliteration: ee-SAH mah-SEEKH RAHBB-deer
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: any softened or qualified confession formula
Original: ἐξομολογήσηται ὅτι κύριος Ἰησοῦς Χριστός
Category: Christology
NEW Philippians term (2:11); same confession category as Romans 10:9. Must render ‘İsa Məsih Rəbdir,’ matching Romans 10:9’s İsa Rəbdir exactly per cross-document Theological Consistency Rules.
Work Out Salvation
Approved rendering: Xilasınızı həyata gətirin
Transliteration: khee-lah-suh-NUH-zuh hah-yah-TAH gah-tee-REEN
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: salvation-by-effort phrasing divorced from 2:13’s ‘Allah sizdə əməl edir’
Original: κατεργάζεσθε τὴν ἑαυτῶν σωτηρίαν
Category: Salvation
NEW Philippians term (2:12). Must always be read together with 2:13 so it is never mistaken for salvation-by-works in a religious culture where final standing is generally deferred to a deeds-weighed Judgment Day.
High Risk Terms
Gospel
Approved rendering: Müjdə
Transliteration: myuzh-DAH
Doctrine: Gospel
Rejected alternatives: İncil (bare, unqualified), yaxşı xəbər (generic good news)
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Salvation
Müjdə (‘glad tidings’) is the Institute for Bible Translation (IBT) Azerbaijani term for the living proclamation. Bare İncil primarily names the book, which Islamic doctrine treats as an originally-revealed-but-now-corrupted text; keep the proclaimed message distinct from that contested-book association. Occurs throughout Philippians (1:5, 1:7, 1:12, 1:16, 1:27, 2:22, 4:3, 4:15). Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Philippians.
Grace

Transliteration: LYUTF
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: mərhəmət (mercy), kərəm (Persian-influenced ‘divine generosity’, often devotional/mystical)
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Lütf conveys unearned favor apart from merit. Mərhəmət (mercy) and kərəm (generosity) both operate within a framework where deeds still matter for final judgment. Occurs at Philippians 1:2, 1:7, 4:23. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Philippians.
Faith
Approved rendering: İman
Transliteration: ee-MAHN
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: etiqad (doctrinal conviction/creed)
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
İman is shared with Islamic vocabulary, where in Shia usage it includes assent to the Imamate. Romans’ iman is personal trust in İsa Məsih specifically. Occurs at Philippians 1:25, 1:27, 2:17, 3:9, 3:12. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Philippians.
Called
Approved rendering: Çağırılmış
Transliteration: chah-guh-ruhl-MUSH
Doctrine: Divine Calling

Doctrine: Divine Calling

Transliteration: tag-dees-et-MAY
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: paklanma (ritual purification)
Original: ἁγιασμός
Category: Sanctification
Thematic across Philippians 1-2 as the Spirit-worked conduct ‘worthy of the gospel’ (1:27). Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Philippians.
Adoption
Approved rendering: Övladlığa götürülmə
Transliteration: ohv-lahd-luh-AH gur-tuh-ryool-MAY
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: övladlıq (bare, without doctrinal qualifier)
Original: υἱοθεσία / τέκνα θεοῦ
Category: Salvation
Philippians 2:15 calls believers ‘children of God’ (τέκνα θεοῦ) amid a ‘crooked generation’ — the same adoptive-sonship doctrine as Romans, not a claim of literal divine offspring. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Philippians.
Law
Approved rendering: Qanun
Transliteration: kah-NOON
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Rejected alternatives: şəriət (Islamic religious law)

Obedience Of Faith
Approved rendering: İmanın gətirdiyi itaət
Transliteration: ee-mah-NUHN gah-teer-dee-YEE ee-tah-AHT
Doctrine: Obedience of Faith
Rejected alternatives: dini vəzifələrə əməl etmə (performing religious duties)
Original: ὑπακοή / ὑπήκοος
Category: Faith
Philippians 2:8 grounds this doctrine in Christ’s own obedience unto death; 2:12’s ‘as you have always obeyed’ must be read together with 2:13 to prevent a works-based misreading alongside work_out_salvation. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for Philippians.
Power Of God
Approved rendering: Allahın qüdrəti
Transliteration: ahl-lah-HUHN kewd-rah-TEE
Doctrine: Power of God for Salvation
Rejected alternatives: Allahın qəzəbi (God’s wrath)
Original: δύναμις θεοῦ
Category: God

Harpagmos Not Exploited
Approved rendering: Əlində saxlanılası/istismar ediləsi bir şey (kimi baxmadı)
Transliteration: ah-leen-DAH sahkh-lah-nuh-lah-SUH ees-teess-mahr eh-dee-lah-SEE beer shay
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ələ keçirilməli bir şey kimi (standalone ‘something to be seized’ — risks implying Christ’s deity was ever in doubt or up for grabs)
Original: ἁρπαγμός
Category: Christology
NEW Philippians term (2:6). Genuinely ambiguous in the source Greek (grasped-at vs. exploited-for-advantage readings). Prefer the ‘exploited for advantage’ sense. Record alternatives_considered per Ambiguity Handling rules.
Form Of A Servant
Approved rendering: Qulun forması
Transliteration: koo-LOON for-mah-SUH
Doctrine: Incarnation / Kenosis
Rejected alternatives: bare ‘qul’ without ‘forma’ qualifier (collapses the distinction between universal creature-status qul and Christ’s voluntary, downward assumption of servant status he did not by nature have)
Original: μορφὴν δούλου
Category: Christology
NEW Philippians term (2:7). Qul is shared, everyday Islamic vocabulary for every human’s native creaturely subordinate status before Allah; here the direction is reversed. Must be taught explicitly.
Exaltation Of Christ
Approved rendering: Çox-çox ucaltdı
Transliteration: chokh-chokh oo-jahlt-DUH
Doctrine: Deity of Christ / Resurrection of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ucaltdı alone (flat ‘exalted’ — loses the intensive ὑπερ- ‘hyper-’ compound force)
Original: ὑπερύψωσεν (ὑπερυψόω)
Category: Christology
NEW Philippians term (2:9). The Father’s exaltation of the obedient, crucified Christ vindicates and reveals, rather than newly grants, his eternal status.
Name Above Every Name
Approved rendering: Bütün adlardan üstün olan ad
Transliteration: bew-TEWN ahd-lahr-DAHN ews-TEWN oh-LAHN ahd
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ / Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: çox məşhur ad (very famous name — trivializes the supreme-rank claim)
Original: τὸ ὄνομα τὸ ὑπὲρ πᾶν ὄνομα
Category: Christology
NEW Philippians term (2:9). Islamic devotional tradition (al-asma al-husna) reserves supreme honorific ‘name’ status for Allah alone. Must be taught as conferred by the Father, to the Father’s glory (2:11).
Joy In Suffering
Approved rendering: Sevinc (əzab içində)
Transliteration: seh-VEENJ
Doctrine: Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment
Rejected alternatives: any borrowed Karbala/Ashura-associated mourning vocabulary (mətəm, əzadarlıq), even as a contrastive device
Original: χαρά (ἐν τοῖς δεσμοῖς)
Category: Suffering
NEW Philippians term (1:4, 1:18, 4:4, 4:11-13). Azerbaijani devotional culture more readily frames suffering through grief/lament than joy; must be taught as a distinct, resurrection-grounded claim.
Suffering For Christ
Approved rendering: Məsih üçün əzab çəkmək (lütflə verilmiş)
Transliteration: mah-SEEKH ew-CHEWN az-AHB chak-MAKH
Doctrine: Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment
Rejected alternatives: framing as punishment or accident, framing as expiatory/venerative suffering
Original: πάσχω / ἐχαρίσθη τὸ … πάσχειν
Category: Suffering
NEW Philippians term (1:29-30). Suffering for Christ’s sake is a gift graciously granted (note the χάρις root in ἐχαρίσθη), purposeful and gospel-advancing, distinguished from Shia devotional suffering-veneration.
Participatory Suffering
Approved rendering: Onun əzablarına şərik olmaq
Transliteration: oh-NOON az-ahb-lah-ruh-NAH shah-REEK ol-MAKH
Doctrine: Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment
Rejected alternatives: şəfaətə şərik olmaq (share in intercession) — FORBIDDEN, would import the Shia Imamate intercessory-merit framework
Original: κοινωνία [τῶν] παθημάτων αὐτοῦ
Category: Suffering
NEW Philippians term (3:10). Fellowship with and identification in Christ’s sufferings, not accumulation of intercessory or redemptive merit. Christ’s suffering was uniquely atoning; believers’ shared suffering is not.
Gospel Partnership
Approved rendering: Müjdə işində ünsiyyət/tərəfdaşlıq
Transliteration: myuzh-DAH ee-sheen-DAH ewn-see-YAHT
Doctrine: Partnership in the Gospel
Rejected alternatives: a separate standalone word distinct from Ünsiyyət (rejected to preserve Romans-established fellowship term consistency)
Original: κοινωνία εἰς τὸ εὐαγγέλιον / κοινωνέω, δόσις καὶ λῆψις
Category: Church
NEW Philippians term (1:5, 4:14-16). Base term Ünsiyyət reused exactly from Romans TM, qualified with ‘Müjdə işində’ to signal the material/financial-partnership extension.

Approved rendering: Səmavi vətəndaşlıq
Transliteration: sah-mah-VEE vah-tan-dahsh-LUHK
Doctrine: Citizenship in Heaven
Rejected alternatives: səmavi dövlətin üzvüyük (member of a heavenly state) — imports the already-flagged loaded ‘dövlət’ category
Original: πολίτευμα / πολιτεύεσθε
Category: Eschatology
NEW Philippians term (1:27, 3:20). Vətəndaşlıq’s civic-political connotation risks being heard as rival political allegiance; teach as eschatological identity relativizing, not replacing, civic duty.
Circumcision Controversy
Approved rendering: Sünnət
Transliteration: sewn-NAT
Doctrine: Righteousness by Faith versus the Law
Original: περιτομή
Category: Covenant
NEW Philippians term (3:2-5). Sünnət is a familiar cultural-religious practice among Azerbaijani Muslims; must teach that Paul’s target is reliance on any religious/ethnic mark, not the physical practice itself.
Confidence In The Flesh
Approved rendering: Cismə əsaslanan etibar
Transliteration: jees-MAH a-sahs-lah-NAHN eh-tee-BAHR
Doctrine: Righteousness by Faith versus the Law
Rejected alternatives: bare ‘bədən’ (body) — collapses σάρξ into a generic anatomical term
Original: σάρξ / πεποιθέναι ἐν σαρκί
Category: Salvation
NEW Philippians term (3:3-4). Names self-reliant reliance on ancestry, religious pedigree, and law-keeping — the polar opposite of Salehlik received by faith.
Maturity In Christ
Approved rendering: Yetkin
Transliteration: yet-KEEN
Doctrine: Pressing on toward the Goal in Christ
Rejected alternatives: kamil (perfect/complete) — FORBIDDEN: Sufi İnsan-i Kamil (‘Perfect Man’) mystical self-attained perfection, incompatible with Paul’s grace-grounded, still-pursuing maturity
Original: τέλειος
Category: Sanctification
NEW Philippians term (3:15). HIGH; one of the most important forbidden-substitution additions for this Language Package. Paul explicitly denies having ‘arrived’ (3:12).
Contentment In Christ
Approved rendering: Kifayətlənmə / Qənaət (Məsihdə)
Transliteration: kee-fah-yat-lan-MAH
Doctrine: Contentment in All Circumstances
Rejected alternatives: bare ‘qənaət’ without qualification — risks assimilation to the tavakkul/qismət framework
Original: αὐτάρκεια / αὐτάρκης
Category: Ethics
NEW Philippians term (4:11). Must always be paired with strengthened_by_christ; never let contentment stand as a free-floating virtue disconnected from Christ-empowerment.
Strengthened By Christ
Approved rendering: Məsih vasitəsilə qüvvətlənmə
Transliteration: mah-SEEKH vah-see-tah-SEE-lah kewv-vat-lan-MAH
Doctrine: Contentment in All Circumstances / Power of God for Salvation
Rejected alternatives: generic self-help rendering (‘hər şeyə qadirəm’) divorced from the Christ-specific empowerment
Original: ἐνδυναμόω
Category: God
NEW Philippians term (4:13). Pairs with Allahın qüdrəti but is a distinct verb; must always retain the explicit Christ-referent.

Category: Ethics
NEW Philippians term (2:2, 2:5, 3:15, 4:2). Must be rendered consistently across all four occurrences.

Transliteration: tah-vah-zoh-kahr-LUHK
Doctrine: Unity and Humility in the Church
Original: ταπεινοφροσύνη / ἐταπείνωσεν ἑαυτόν

Tender Affection Compassion
Approved rendering: Şəfqət və rəhm
Transliteration: shahf-KAHT vah RAHM
Doctrine: Unity and Humility in the Church
Original: σπλάγχνα καὶ οἰκτιρμοί

Doctrine: Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment
Original: δεσμά
Category: Suffering
NEW Philippians term (1:7, 1:13, 1:14, 1:17). Avoid framing that reads as martyrdom-veneration; Paul’s point is missional, not devotional-heroic.
Rubbish For Christ
Approved rendering: Zibil (Məsih üçün)
Transliteration: zee-BEEL
Doctrine: Righteousness by Faith versus the Law
Rejected alternatives: peyin (literal dung) — too coarse for the target modern-standard register

Transliteration: mew-kah-FAHT
Doctrine: Pressing on toward the Goal in Christ
Original: βραβεῖον
